A young hero’s final act: Glendale firefighter Nick Hutcherson, just 27, gave his life battling a wildfire near the Colorado-Utah border on June 27, one of three firefighters lost that day. Trapped by fast-moving flames, Nick and four others deployed emergency shelters — a last-ditch effort when escape is impossible — with two survivors injured. Nick served with the U.S. Forest Service’s Kaibab National Forest Rifle Helitack crew, embodying the courage of the Wildland Fire Service.
