- 0:02Speaker 1: got JAV Smooth in the house, Emmy Award winning actor, comedian, producer, writer,
- 0:07Speaker 1: all the things. He's in town for the Aficionado Tour
- 0:10Speaker 1: at good nights this weekend. So if you're looking for
- 0:12Speaker 1: something to do, this is your stuff. He's got two shows,
- 0:14Speaker 1: both nights, which JAV Saturday at seven is already sold out.
- 0:19Speaker 2: Man, we on fire now, you know, look all ding
- 0:23Speaker 2: smallness down is this damn rain? But even you know,
- 0:26Speaker 2: it's hard to beat people who want to get out,
- 0:29Speaker 2: you know what I'm saying. So if this is going
- 0:31Speaker 2: to be spectacular, I'm so happy that one show was
- 0:33Speaker 2: already down. You know, a lot of family coming. You know.
- 0:36Speaker 2: I'm from North Carolina myself, so North Kaki, Laki, who
- 0:39Speaker 2: do you who? You know? A lot of my family
- 0:42Speaker 2: is showing up, so I think my family may be
- 0:44Speaker 2: sit on those seats up so you better if you
- 0:47Speaker 2: better get out and get them tickets because my family
- 0:50Speaker 2: is driving up from Plymouth. I got family and Charlotte
- 0:54Speaker 2: coming up. I got family here in Raleigh, Fayettville and Greensboro,
- 0:59Speaker 2: all everywhere we show up and anybody from Plymouth, North Carolina,
- 1:05Speaker 2: gonna roll up in there, your butter, get them seats
- 1:08Speaker 2: because they gonna You can tell my family because if
- 1:11Speaker 2: i'm they're two hours away down in Plymouth, they're gonna
- 1:14Speaker 2: have that red dirt play on their shoes, so you
- 1:18Speaker 2: you know they're in the house. How about I'm from.
- 1:21Speaker 1: Durham originally, and it's rare to find people that are
- 1:23Speaker 1: actually from this area. But I was like, Plymouth, where
- 1:26Speaker 1: is that? I had to google it. I was like, oh, okay,
- 1:28Speaker 1: it's like two three not even two hours from here.
- 1:31Speaker 1: It's got one stuff like though.
- 1:33Speaker 2: Right, they say depending on how you drive. Everybody always
- 1:37Speaker 2: say depend on how you drive.
- 1:40Speaker 1: I saw some people online saying you need to go
- 1:42Speaker 1: to the Golden Skillet. I was like, I have never
- 1:44Speaker 1: heard of the gold Golden Skillet either.
- 1:46Speaker 2: Yeah, the Golden Sculler's out there on sixty four. You
- 1:49Speaker 2: know it's been there a long time. But you know
- 1:52Speaker 2: I can't. I can't eat there because you know, I'm vegan,
- 1:54Speaker 2: so you know, I passed my time. You know, my
- 1:59Speaker 2: time is over with with that kind of food. But
- 2:02Speaker 2: people love it and people always frequent it. So you're
- 2:04Speaker 2: going down he's going through going to the next head,
- 2:07Speaker 2: going to the shore. You know where to stop that?
- 2:09Speaker 2: Slow down, stopping, plumb up telling JB said, what up?
- 2:13Speaker 1: Okay, now you are vegan, and I know everything is fun.
- 2:16Speaker 1: You know you're funny. I get that, But when did
- 2:18Speaker 1: you just had to go vegan? Because you know, I've
- 2:20Speaker 1: been considering it. I was like, I need to eat better.
- 2:22Speaker 1: And I think that's so amazing because you've been doing
- 2:24Speaker 1: this for a decade or more.
- 2:25Speaker 2: Yeah, I've been, I've been, I've been well. I went.
- 2:28Speaker 2: I used to be part time, full time, part time vegan,
- 2:30Speaker 2: full time carnivore a long time because my wife, you know,
- 2:34Speaker 2: she hasn't eaten meat in twenty something years. You know,
- 2:37Speaker 2: I jumped on it full time ten years ago. So
- 2:42Speaker 2: ten years ago I went full time vegan. So you know,
- 2:45Speaker 2: it's it's a little bit of both, you know. I
- 2:47Speaker 2: got I got a screamish one time. I was eating
- 2:50Speaker 2: some some buffalo wings and I just say, you know what,
- 2:52Speaker 2: I think, I'm over it.
- 2:54Speaker 1: Yeah, I've I seen roadkill. I'm like, I'm a verg
- 2:56Speaker 1: I'm not a virgin. I'm not a virgin. Get awagan.
- 3:03Speaker 1: I know.
- 3:04Speaker 2: Okay, so.
- 3:06Speaker 1: Curve your enthusiasm, Leon Black. I mean, like everybody loved
- 3:11Speaker 1: your role and this was not scripted. It was one
- 3:13Speaker 1: of my favorite shows. I'm sad that it came to
- 3:15Speaker 1: a close, like what in twenty four, right, Yeah.
- 3:18Speaker 2: We are done with it. Yeah yeah, but you can
- 3:21Speaker 2: still see it everywhere though, everywhere people who love it.
- 3:25Speaker 2: It's going to be around for a long time. So
- 3:27Speaker 2: I tell people, man, just enjoy it. It's fun. You know.
- 3:30Speaker 2: I came in, you know, season six, so I got
- 3:33Speaker 2: I got some good years in there before the show
- 3:35Speaker 2: went away, and I got a chempce to be on
- 3:37Speaker 2: the remaining the remaining seasons of my favorite show. So
- 3:44Speaker 2: it was great to be a part of that. So yeah, man,
- 3:47Speaker 2: And to be on a show like that that's improvised
- 3:50Speaker 2: and you know, we don't know what we're going to
- 3:53Speaker 2: say as far as dialogue. You know, we just know
- 3:56Speaker 2: what the storyline is. And it's a unique way of work,
- 4:00Speaker 2: very unique way of working. And got a chance to
- 4:02Speaker 2: do that. That was so fun.
- 4:04Speaker 1: But okay, did y'all have to redo like certain scenes
- 4:06Speaker 1: because it was so funny and just so real and
- 4:10Speaker 1: raw that it's like, how did you come up with that?
- 4:12Speaker 1: On the fly?
- 4:13Speaker 2: It's just that's that improv. You know. Improv is a
- 4:19Speaker 2: very unique skill, you know, And I tell anybody to
- 4:22Speaker 2: take an improv class. I don't care if you sell
- 4:24Speaker 2: in real estate or or or you know, you got
- 4:27Speaker 2: a business. You know, the ability to change your mind
- 4:30Speaker 2: and read energy and be able to you know, just
- 4:35Speaker 2: go off the top of the dormins is an incredible,
- 4:37Speaker 2: incredible skill to have at your disposal. So, yeah, you know,
- 4:42Speaker 2: I took an improv class. Man, I want you know,
- 4:45Speaker 2: I'm bagging myself big time. But this might have been
- 4:48Speaker 2: like eighty like eighty eight or something like that. I
- 4:51Speaker 2: took an improv class in New York City, you know,
- 4:54Speaker 2: and ever since then, I just put that little tool
- 4:56Speaker 2: in my toolbox and next thing, you know, you know,
- 4:58Speaker 2: I get a chance to do that on on a
- 5:01Speaker 2: lot of movies I've done, and they know what they're
- 5:03Speaker 2: gonna get report they even hired me so and then
- 5:05Speaker 2: when I got on a curve, it just was a
- 5:07Speaker 2: natural fit. So it was always a natural fit for
- 5:10Speaker 2: me to be a part of something like that.
- 5:12Speaker 1: And of course you've done TV movies, wrote for SNL,
- 5:15Speaker 1: You've done all the things. Do people expect you to
- 5:17Speaker 1: be funny always like your family, friends, or when fans
- 5:20Speaker 1: meet you, they expect funny or you're like, no, I'm
- 5:22Speaker 1: just I'm just me for right now.
- 5:25Speaker 2: You know, I got my little windows. Sometimes if I'm
- 5:28Speaker 2: driving it, it's different than if people ask for it,
- 5:31Speaker 2: you know what I mean. It's different, okay, But I
- 5:34Speaker 2: always try to make some make people smile, whether I'm
- 5:37Speaker 2: on stage, whether I'm on set. You know, I just
- 5:39Speaker 2: like to be me all the time. So that way,
- 5:42Speaker 2: you know, I leave them with something, you know, and
- 5:44Speaker 2: if I can't leave you with a laugh, I'll leave
- 5:45Speaker 2: you with some inspiration or something to keep you going
- 5:49Speaker 2: no matter what you do. You know, I can stop
- 5:52Speaker 2: in the airport all the time. It stopped everywhere and
- 5:54Speaker 2: I took photose. I'm always huging people. I need to
- 5:58Speaker 2: put like a will pay on my own. Yes, So
- 6:02Speaker 2: every time I hugged somebody and just go, you know,
- 6:07Speaker 2: I need a apple pie. I'm the hugger. They caught
- 6:10Speaker 2: me the hugger to have.
- 6:12Speaker 1: You hug Does your wife roll her eyes because everybody
- 6:15Speaker 1: loves you, they think you're so funny, and she's like
- 6:17Speaker 1: mm hmm, he's my husband. So it's different at the house.
- 6:22Speaker 2: No, she loves it. Though she loves it. She'll say,
- 6:25Speaker 2: give me a camera. I took a picture. You know.
- 6:27Speaker 1: I love that.
- 6:28Speaker 2: If someone says, hey, my dad is in the hospital.
- 6:30Speaker 2: He's a big fan, I'll say he's a big fan.
- 6:32Speaker 2: For real. I'm like, call face Tom right now, let
- 6:35Speaker 2: me see he better say me.
- 6:37Speaker 1: You know that's super cool. So okay, speaking of fan encounters, like,
- 6:42Speaker 1: what's the craziest thing you've had happened to you from
- 6:44Speaker 1: a fan?
- 6:45Speaker 2: Oh man, I don't like when I met a Urino
- 6:48Speaker 2: and someone says, yo, man, I'm a big fan, and
- 6:51Speaker 2: we had the Urino side by side, and they're like, yo,
- 6:53Speaker 2: kind of get a pick. I said, Yo, we're gonna
- 6:58Speaker 2: both wash our hands. We're gonna get out of this restroom.
- 7:01Speaker 2: So the background ain't ain't no damn toilets and urinose
- 7:05Speaker 2: and we're gonna get out of here. We're gonna go
- 7:07Speaker 2: and go out there. We're gonna take a picture together.
- 7:10Speaker 2: But you know, oh man, have people, you know, I've
- 7:13Speaker 2: had people call me the wrong person sometimes, which is hilarious,
- 7:18Speaker 2: and I sit there and sometimes sometimes I'll pretend to
- 7:21Speaker 2: pretend I'm that person, and then sometimes I'll say, come on, man,
- 7:24Speaker 2: come on man. You know damn well, that's.
- 7:27Speaker 1: Not me, don't you know. They will never forget that either.
- 7:31Speaker 1: They're just like, oh my god, I can't believe I
- 7:33Speaker 1: did that.
- 7:36Speaker 2: I just got to ride it out a little bit.
- 7:38Speaker 1: And you do a lot of good too. Of course,
- 7:40Speaker 1: you're on the board for the Boys and Girls Club,
- 7:42Speaker 1: so you know giving back to the community is also
- 7:45Speaker 1: big to you.
- 7:47Speaker 2: Yeah, you know what I'm trying. I'm trying to move
- 7:49Speaker 2: my schedule a little bit to get over to one
- 7:52Speaker 2: of the branches here to peek in and just to
- 7:54Speaker 2: see see the young people and say hello. Yeah and yeah.
- 7:58Speaker 2: I always my travels, I always stopped by the clubs,
- 8:02Speaker 2: uh in the cities i'm at. So I'm gonna try
- 8:04Speaker 2: to maybe leave a little earlier before my show and
- 8:07Speaker 2: stop buying the Boys and Girls Club just to say Hi, David.
- 8:11Speaker 1: That's gonna make me cry, because you know that will
- 8:13Speaker 1: change your kid's life to see you and be inspired
- 8:15Speaker 1: by you. So that's amazing.
- 8:17Speaker 2: Yeah, I do a lot of work because I'm actually
- 8:20Speaker 2: on the Boys and Girls Club, you know, Hall of Fame.
- 8:22Speaker 2: I'm in the Hall of Fame. I'm also you know,
- 8:26Speaker 2: I host a lot of the galas and present all
- 8:29Speaker 2: the time, you know, the Youth of the Year stuff.
- 8:31Speaker 2: I do a lot of that stuff. And even we
- 8:34Speaker 2: were even represented at the Emmys this past Emmys, and
- 8:39Speaker 2: the Boys and Girls Club was a big part of
- 8:41Speaker 2: the Emmys and I was representing you know, the Boys
- 8:45Speaker 2: and Girls Club that night with some young people in
- 8:47Speaker 2: the audience sitting with me. So yeah, I get a
- 8:49Speaker 2: chance to do some really cool stuff, you know, for
- 8:51Speaker 2: the Boys and Girls Club. It's so important to me
- 8:53Speaker 2: how younger people have have some kind of foundation, you know,
- 8:57Speaker 2: and and the Boys and Girls Club is some place
- 8:59Speaker 2: I started at know, it's so important to be a
- 9:02Speaker 2: part of that.
- 9:02Speaker 1: I just love you even more now. I'm like, that's
- 9:04Speaker 1: so cool. How you change your schedule? Okay, so what
- 9:06Speaker 1: can everybody expect other than fighting your family to get
- 9:09Speaker 1: a seat this weekend? O.
- 9:11Speaker 2: Man. I always try to perform for where I'm at.
- 9:16Speaker 2: I always try to just be me, and I always
- 9:18Speaker 2: try to have fun. My show is different from a
- 9:21Speaker 2: lot of a lot of comedians out there, if you know,
- 9:24Speaker 2: I improvised a lot. I'm also very physical, so my
- 9:27Speaker 2: show is very unique. I've been coming to North Carolina
- 9:30Speaker 2: a long time. So you know, people who come to
- 9:32Speaker 2: my shows, people will see me on TV, people who
- 9:34Speaker 2: have followed my journey, they kind of know what I do.
- 9:38Speaker 2: You know, I just get left them have a good time.
- 9:40Speaker 2: I love being in a moment also with people. So
- 9:42Speaker 2: you know, you never know what every show is. Every
- 9:45Speaker 2: show is not completely different, but every show has its
- 9:49Speaker 2: own thing because every audience is different. You've been in
- 9:53Speaker 2: the same city every audience. It doesn't matter if the
- 9:55Speaker 2: same city or not. It's a different tone that's set
- 9:59Speaker 2: when you hit that stage and you get them on
- 10:01Speaker 2: their heels, get them laughing, and you know your storytelling.
- 10:04Speaker 2: You're doing all this cool stuff. And man, every show
- 10:06Speaker 2: becomes this thing and I see a lot of things.
- 10:08Speaker 2: I say a lot of things for the first time
- 10:11Speaker 2: in every show. So I get a chance to laugh
- 10:13Speaker 2: at myself sometimes, and I think that makes the show
- 10:17Speaker 2: like we're all hanging out as opposed to just so
- 10:19Speaker 2: folks structured and robotic. You know, I'm a terrible robot.
- 10:23Speaker 2: You know, I turn my back on people. I'll be
- 10:25Speaker 2: doing all kinds of stuff. But I think, you know,
- 10:28Speaker 2: I just love the paint pictures on stage. It's say
- 10:31Speaker 2: an artist more. Yeah, you know, you're painting, you're paying
- 10:33Speaker 2: these unique stories and you're having fun with people and
- 10:37Speaker 2: the chance to see me up. I'm close and personal too.
- 10:40Speaker 2: You know, a theater is different, you know what I mean,
- 10:42Speaker 2: Casinos are different. When you're in the comedy club, it's
- 10:45Speaker 2: very cool about being able to connect with people and
- 10:48Speaker 2: see their faces, you know, you know, and you know,
- 10:52Speaker 2: I and I hang out after the show. I'm always
- 10:54Speaker 2: going out and shaking hands, hugging people, thinking them for
- 10:57Speaker 2: coming out.
- 10:58Speaker 1: You know, that's incredible. That's one of the best parts
- 11:00Speaker 1: to us. To see you clown somebody or you know,
- 11:03Speaker 1: make fun in a gentle way with somebody in the audience.
- 11:05Speaker 1: That's the best.
- 11:07Speaker 2: Yep. It's so fun. Yeah, so fun.
- 11:09Speaker 1: Of course they have good food also at Good Nights,
- 11:11Speaker 1: plus you get to go see JB tickets Goodnightscomedy dot com.
- 11:15Speaker 1: And then of course, how can everybody get involved with
- 11:17Speaker 1: projects you're working on and follow you if they don't
- 11:19Speaker 1: already follow you on social oh man, what.
- 11:23Speaker 2: You can do is support your local boys and Girls club,
- 11:25Speaker 2: support any any anything that supports young people's their journey,
- 11:30Speaker 2: you know, and make sure they're in a good place.
- 11:34Speaker 2: Mental health is very important also, you know, touch base
- 11:37Speaker 2: with young people inspire them to go for their dreams.
- 11:40Speaker 2: You know, everything is not in your phone. Everything is
- 11:43Speaker 2: not your phone. Do social gatherings for them so they
- 11:45Speaker 2: can you know, we used to go to the parties
- 11:48Speaker 2: and dance and have a good time. And you know,
- 11:50Speaker 2: I think that thing is is dying out, is dying
- 11:53Speaker 2: out going to hear music and dancing and rold skating
- 11:57Speaker 2: and doing all that fun stuff, you know, getting getting
- 12:00Speaker 2: gether for block parties. And I grew up on that
- 12:01Speaker 2: kind of stuff, and I connect with friends. I got
- 12:04Speaker 2: lifelong friends. All my friends are not through my phone.
- 12:07Speaker 2: You know, I got real friends, you know who you know,
- 12:11Speaker 2: I've been my friends since I was in elementary school.
- 12:14Speaker 2: And that's that's the memories. You know, memories are being lost.
- 12:17Speaker 2: And I hope we can just capture, capture our generation
- 12:21Speaker 2: and and let them have fun and have real memories
- 12:24Speaker 2: that are not in their phone, that are not you know,
- 12:27Speaker 2: in passing. You know, I would hope they you know,
- 12:30Speaker 2: have genuine people behind them to support them and keep going.
- 12:34Speaker 2: You know, I got I just if I just went
- 12:36Speaker 2: into a Fox development deal for unscripted, so We're gonna
- 12:39Speaker 2: be doing some amazing projects, you know, film TV. You know,
- 12:44Speaker 2: I started my own ad agency also, so it's gonna
- 12:47Speaker 2: be some great things happening. And in my lane as
- 12:50Speaker 2: far as what I what I everything that I do,
- 12:52Speaker 2: And yes, I do do a lot of stuff. You know,
- 12:55Speaker 2: when I look at my IMDb, I you know, it's
- 12:58Speaker 2: film TV, A lot of commerce is animation, it's video games.
- 13:03Speaker 2: My voice is on video games. My voice is on
- 13:05Speaker 2: a lot of animation. You know. I can to do
- 13:08Speaker 2: some really cool stuff. So and that's the and that's
- 13:11Speaker 2: the balance of having, you know, just being able to
- 13:13Speaker 2: do what you do in different places and basic in
- 13:16Speaker 2: different areas. And that's and that gives you variety. It
- 13:19Speaker 2: makes people have an interest in what your what your
- 13:22Speaker 2: journey is. And yeah, I just want to I just
- 13:24Speaker 2: want to make sure that I, you know, I satisfy
- 13:28Speaker 2: that and let people know that all things are possible
- 13:31Speaker 2: if we just stay on top of it. Yeah, stay
- 13:33Speaker 2: just stay on what your grind is, you know, have
- 13:35Speaker 2: a grind. Yeah, Well, the world loves you.
- 13:39Speaker 1: And so if you want to get up close and personal,
- 13:41Speaker 1: shake JV's hand. Good Night's Comedy dot com so excited
- 13:45Speaker 1: you're in Raleigh. We're glad that you're back. I know,
- 13:48Speaker 1: you know, representing for North Carolina for sure. That's right,
