Latest / Foul Territory / Bob Costas: Dodgers “ruining” MLB? Dan Wilson’s flub, Michael Jordan’s NBC debut, ’28 Olympics host?
Transcript
- 0:04Speaker 1: Hey, guys, how you doing doing great?
- 0:07Speaker 2: I see you, not just hear you in my ears.
- 0:09Speaker 2: We're talking about the Angels, So it's.
- 0:14Speaker 3: Hey, let's start with the good stuff though, Bob, So
- 0:16Speaker 3: what do you have for us on this World Series?
- 0:19Speaker 3: And do you believe Doc Roberts and how he says
- 0:23Speaker 3: the Dodgers are ruining baseball?
- 0:26Speaker 1: You know that played well to his team, that played
- 0:30Speaker 1: well in the stadium, It played well to Dodger nation.
- 0:34Speaker 1: It plays into the resentments that many baseball fans have,
- 0:38Speaker 1: understandably of those who play, as Brian Kenny puts it,
- 0:42Speaker 1: hedge Fund Baseball, and those teams like the Brewers and
- 0:46Speaker 1: like some others who have to be more resourceful and
- 0:49Speaker 1: nonetheless succeed, but they feel like they're outmanned. But that
- 0:53Speaker 1: was Roberts in the exuberance of the moment. We all
- 0:55Speaker 1: know that Doc is a really good guy. He respects
- 0:58Speaker 1: the game. He wasn't trying to salt anybody or anything
- 1:01Speaker 1: like that. What I do know about this series two things.
- 1:05Speaker 1: People still seem to look at baseball the same way
- 1:09Speaker 1: they would at a football game, where when one team
- 1:12Speaker 1: has clear advantages, they'll press those advantages. The quarterback touches
- 1:16Speaker 1: the ball on every play. Michael Jordan and Lebron James
- 1:19Speaker 1: touched the ball almost every time down the floor. Wayne
- 1:22Speaker 1: Gretzky plays extra shifts in the Stanley Cup playoffs. It
- 1:25Speaker 1: doesn't work that way in baseball. Baseball's more random. So
- 1:30Speaker 1: it looks like the Dodgers are just pile driving past everybody.
- 1:34Speaker 1: Milwaukee won ninety seven games best in baseball. They blew
- 1:36Speaker 1: them out. If Toronto wins Game one tonight, it's very
- 1:41Speaker 1: close to a certainty that the series at least comes
- 1:44Speaker 1: back to Toronto for Game six and seven. And we
- 1:47Speaker 1: know what happened with Seattle when they came back home
- 1:49Speaker 1: down three to two. Are the Dodgers the favorites, Absolutely,
- 1:53Speaker 1: and they should be. But if you know anything about
- 1:55Speaker 1: baseball and its history, are they prohibitive favorites?
- 1:58Speaker 2: No, Bob, Listen, this sounds like your Yankees back in
- 2:02Speaker 2: the nineties and the two thousands, Right. They had spend
- 2:04Speaker 2: more money and they were just better, but they didn't
- 2:07Speaker 2: win every year, right, So I mean, now it's just
- 2:09Speaker 2: the Dodgers turn to do this, and the Yankees won
- 2:12Speaker 2: all those and everyone hates a team or they want
- 2:15Speaker 2: to root against the team just as much, if not
- 2:17Speaker 2: more than they want to root for another team.
- 2:20Speaker 4: You get more because you know, you get more.
- 2:22Speaker 2: Eyes on you when people want to see you lose
- 2:25Speaker 2: than they do when they want to see somebody win.
- 2:28Speaker 2: And that's kind of where I feel like we're at.
- 2:29Speaker 2: And the Dodgers haven't. Dodgers have a bunch of good guys.
- 2:31Speaker 2: They haven't done really anything like off the field, they
- 2:34Speaker 2: haven't done any scandals.
- 2:35Speaker 4: They got a bunch of good dudes that seem to
- 2:37Speaker 4: just win baseball games.
- 2:39Speaker 1: Yeah, And you know, when you think about it, there's
- 2:41Speaker 1: a parallel there to Joe Torre's Yankees. You know, people
- 2:44Speaker 1: might not have liked George Steinbrenner, you know, huffing and
- 2:46Speaker 1: puffing with everything, but Tory comes in establishes a different tone.
- 2:50Speaker 1: How are you going to disrespect or dislike Derek Jeter
- 2:53Speaker 1: or Bernie Williams or Jahe Posada, all those people. It
- 2:57Speaker 1: wasn't just that they were a winning team. They were
- 2:59Speaker 1: a likable team and the way they went about it,
- 3:02Speaker 1: and then when they happen to be in the World
- 3:05Speaker 1: Series and the immediate aftermath of two thousand and one,
- 3:08Speaker 1: and there are all those emotional scenes and people wearing
- 3:10Speaker 1: NYPD and FDNY hats. I think that was all washed away,
- 3:15Speaker 1: and other than when people were rooting for the Diamondbacks
- 3:18Speaker 1: perhaps in that series. Other than Diamondback fans, I think
- 3:21Speaker 1: people felt good about the Yankees in that circumstance. But
- 3:25Speaker 1: you know how it is Notre Dame, the Cowboys, Duke.
- 3:28Speaker 1: They have as many people nationwide rooting against them as
- 3:31Speaker 1: rooting for them. One thing for sure, this is a
- 3:33Speaker 1: safe prediction on this World series. The ratings are going
- 3:36Speaker 1: to be through the roof. You've seen what the ratings
- 3:39Speaker 1: are in Canada. The Jays are almost a national obsession,
- 3:43Speaker 1: and overseas across the Pacific Ocean, all of Japan's going
- 3:47Speaker 1: to be up watching these games to see Otani into
- 3:50Speaker 1: a lesser ausent Yamamoto and Sasaki. The Dodgers bring, you know,
- 3:55Speaker 1: name brand and a large market already, and when you
- 3:58Speaker 1: combine it with those other factors, I haven't got the
- 4:01Speaker 1: figures in front of you, but I'd be surprised if
- 4:03Speaker 1: this goes six or seven. You've got to get deeper
- 4:05Speaker 1: in the audience builds. Although it'll build for the game
- 4:09Speaker 1: that Otani pitchers, which would be Game four at Dodger Stadium.
- 4:13Speaker 1: If it goes six or seven games, my guess is
- 4:16Speaker 1: this could be the highest rated World Series since the
- 4:18Speaker 1: Cubs broke the curse in twenty sixteen.
- 4:22Speaker 5: All Right, so this is great for baseball. So give
- 4:24Speaker 5: us your preview. Yeah, give us the preview of what
- 4:26Speaker 5: you think not only is going to happen, but how
- 4:29Speaker 5: the series breaks down to get to Game six or
- 4:33Speaker 5: Game seven.
- 4:35Speaker 1: It's not imperative, but it would be good for the series.
- 4:38Speaker 1: Would really be good for the series if Toronto wins
- 4:41Speaker 1: Game one tonight and established that this is a competition,
- 4:45Speaker 1: not a coronation of a Dodger dynasty. Getting out of
- 4:50Speaker 1: there with a split, you know, despite the fact that
- 4:52Speaker 1: we can get carried away. If you play three games
- 4:56Speaker 1: against a cellar dwelling team, the odds are the that
- 5:00Speaker 1: team wins one of those games, if those games are
- 5:03Speaker 1: in July or August. Now I realize that you approach
- 5:05Speaker 1: it differently in October, but if Toronto gets out with
- 5:08Speaker 1: a split, I think the odds are overwhelming that they
- 5:12Speaker 1: come back to Toronto and they certainly have a chance
- 5:16Speaker 1: with two games at home. If they come back down
- 5:18Speaker 1: three to two, let alone up three two I think
- 5:20Speaker 1: that we've got a series that has a chance to
- 5:22Speaker 1: go to a seventh game, and then the ratings will
- 5:24Speaker 1: be really through the roof they will.
- 5:26Speaker 5: Bob, I agree.
- 5:27Speaker 2: I think you got all of Japan watching, you got
- 5:29Speaker 2: all of Canada watching, and you got all of America watching,
- 5:32Speaker 2: not only in LA but people that want the Dodgers
- 5:34Speaker 2: to lose.
- 5:34Speaker 4: They're all rooting for the Blue Jay.
- 5:35Speaker 2: So I think the ratings for the series are going
- 5:37Speaker 2: to be outstanding, which needs even my next question.
- 5:39Speaker 4: You're tight with Rob Manfred, you know him very well.
- 5:42Speaker 4: Everyone everywhere you.
- 5:43Speaker 2: Read, ratings are up, attendance is of interest in baseball
- 5:47Speaker 2: is up. And then all of a sudden, we hear, well,
- 5:49Speaker 2: we need a salary cap. I'm sorry to bring us down,
- 5:51Speaker 2: but we need a salary cap and we need a
- 5:53Speaker 2: lock down.
- 5:54Speaker 4: These players can't.
- 5:55Speaker 2: Keep doing what they're doing where we hung up here, Bob,
- 5:58Speaker 2: explain this to me because I can't.
- 6:00Speaker 4: You're one of the smartest people I know.
- 6:02Speaker 2: Maybe you can explain this to me because no one
- 6:03Speaker 2: else has been able to explain it to you.
- 6:04Speaker 1: Well, you know, there's a lot of small and middle
- 6:08Speaker 1: market teams that think that the thing is out of hand.
- 6:11Speaker 1: But that's been the refrain forever, no matter how much
- 6:14Speaker 1: the economic landscape has changed, the threat of a lockout,
- 6:19Speaker 1: and even if it's imposed after lockouts. Historically in baseball history,
- 6:24Speaker 1: you haven't lost any games after strikes, which strategically take
- 6:28Speaker 1: place during seasons or just before the season begins. Then
- 6:31Speaker 1: we have lost games, and in some cases lots of them.
- 6:35Speaker 1: So this may be just the tactic. All right, We're
- 6:37Speaker 1: going to impose a lockout technically in December of twenty
- 6:40Speaker 1: twenty six. That gives us plenty of time to work
- 6:43Speaker 1: this thing out. One of the problems, if that's the
- 6:46Speaker 1: right word, is that Tony Clark is in a difficult
- 6:50Speaker 1: position as the head of the MLB Players Association. Going
- 6:54Speaker 1: all the way back to Marvin Miller, who finally got
- 6:57Speaker 1: into the Baseball Hall of Fame, is one of the
- 6:58Speaker 1: most significant non play in the history of the game.
- 7:02Speaker 1: Marvin Miller stood fast, it wasn't a negotiating thing. It
- 7:06Speaker 1: was a matter of principle. There will never be a
- 7:08Speaker 1: salary cap, and Don Fear and gene Orza were just
- 7:12Speaker 1: as hardline. Tony Clark doesn't want to be the first
- 7:16Speaker 1: guy who yields ground on that particular issue, which was
- 7:20Speaker 1: always a red line for the players. But think about it,
- 7:24Speaker 1: in one form or another. The NFL, the NHL, and
- 7:27Speaker 1: the NBA all have some version of a salary cap.
- 7:31Speaker 1: This should now not be a holy war anymore. All
- 7:34Speaker 1: the matters of principle, the players of one over time
- 7:37Speaker 1: as they should have. Now this should just be a
- 7:40Speaker 1: hard nosed business negotiation and not a matter of principle
- 7:44Speaker 1: that can't possibly be violated no matter what else is
- 7:47Speaker 1: going on. We're not going to be able to roll
- 7:50Speaker 1: back the clock and the players standing on a street
- 7:53Speaker 1: corner with a tin cup are having to have off
- 7:54Speaker 1: season jobs. That's not going to happen. I hope the
- 7:57Speaker 1: two sides can realize there's a lot of mutual interest
- 8:00Speaker 1: here and let's see if we can negotiate a deal
- 8:02Speaker 1: like businessmen rather than people that are on opposite sides
- 8:06Speaker 1: of a holy war.
- 8:08Speaker 5: I agreed.
- 8:08Speaker 4: I agree with everything you said.
- 8:10Speaker 2: Here's the problem with and I don't want to get
- 8:12Speaker 2: into a debate that you'll win because you're way smarter
- 8:14Speaker 2: than I am.
- 8:14Speaker 4: Well, here's my thing. You're here.
- 8:17Speaker 2: Yeah, the cap hasn't fixed anything in the other sports.
- 8:20Speaker 2: It hasn't fixed basketball. It hasn't fixed the NFL, it
- 8:22Speaker 2: hasn't Hockey's you can make argument hockeys worse since they
- 8:25Speaker 2: went to a full cap, I mean football, they traded
- 8:27Speaker 2: the players have to switch teams every year. NBA they
- 8:30Speaker 2: have all these different well we have to They keep
- 8:32Speaker 2: changing the rules. So you know, this guy can go
- 8:35Speaker 2: back and the Celtics won.
- 8:36Speaker 1: You can't even understand. You can't even understand why the
- 8:39Speaker 1: NBA thing is. Sometimes just like, let's let's pick up
- 8:42Speaker 1: sides of the schoolyard. Let's all get together, will be
- 8:44Speaker 1: a team. We'll walk to the schoolyard, you know exactly.
- 8:47Speaker 1: We three will walk to the schoolyard. We'll have the team.
- 8:49Speaker 1: We'll take the two best guys we find there, and
- 8:51Speaker 1: that's our team.
- 8:53Speaker 4: I agree.
- 8:53Speaker 2: So that's why I mean listen, as you know, I'm
- 8:55Speaker 2: a player, so I'm going to always argue against it.
- 8:57Speaker 4: But you know you explained it. We explained it.
- 8:59Speaker 2: But to me, a cap is not the answer. And
- 9:01Speaker 2: there's got to be a way we can make this work.
- 9:03Speaker 2: And I just don't want to see any time missed.
- 9:05Speaker 2: I know we're you're away. There's already dominating stuff. So
- 9:08Speaker 2: like as you know someone famous one said, can we
- 9:11Speaker 2: all just get along?
- 9:12Speaker 4: Please? Like in baseball, just just get along?
- 9:16Speaker 1: Yeah? Apparent apparently not. You know, I'm hoping. I'm hoping
- 9:21Speaker 1: that relations should be better now. You know, back in
- 9:24Speaker 1: the day when the owners really were screwing the players.
- 9:28Speaker 1: This is a different situation now. I know it was
- 9:30Speaker 1: a one off. But when Bryce Harper drops an F
- 9:34Speaker 1: bomb on Manfred to whatever extent that represents a portion
- 9:39Speaker 1: of the players electorate, I don't think that's a hopeful sign.
- 9:44Speaker 1: You know. Uh, they have to respect the owner's position
- 9:48Speaker 1: and the commission's position. They don't have to agree with it,
- 9:51Speaker 1: but they they have to to view them as, if
- 9:54Speaker 1: not partners, there's at least some overlap of mutual interest,
- 9:59Speaker 1: and let's sit down and negotiate that. By the way,
- 10:01Speaker 1: before I forget this to your earlier point, AJ, people
- 10:05Speaker 1: will irrationally hate whatever they want to hate. But you're
- 10:09Speaker 1: absolutely right. You look at the core of this Dodger team,
- 10:12Speaker 1: Mookie Bets, Freddie Freeman, Shohey Otani, Clayton Kershaw also bound
- 10:18Speaker 1: for the Hall of Fame. Dave Roberts is going to
- 10:20Speaker 1: get in when you look at his overall record there's
- 10:22Speaker 1: five Hall of Famers, and no rational person can say
- 10:26Speaker 1: a bad word about any of them. They conduct themselves
- 10:29Speaker 1: with class and complete respect for the game. People should
- 10:32Speaker 1: celebrate that in this era. Yeah, it's a good call.
- 10:36Speaker 3: Those guys are quite likable.
- 10:39Speaker 2: I know that's that's where the rub is in this series,
- 10:42Speaker 2: because Toronto has a bunch of good likable guys too.
- 10:45Speaker 2: But we had Shane Bibron, he was awesome, right, We've
- 10:48Speaker 2: had Max, We've had Jeff, we'vet Hoffman.
- 10:50Speaker 4: We've had all these.
- 10:51Speaker 3: Guys consistent winners, though, so it gives them something to
- 10:54Speaker 3: root against with the Dodgers, I do believe that side
- 10:57Speaker 3: of the equation.
- 10:58Speaker 4: Bob, to take a.
- 10:59Speaker 3: Turn here, you didn't call postseason ball for the first
- 11:02Speaker 3: time in a while.
- 11:03Speaker 1: Did you miss it? I missed a little bit being
- 11:07Speaker 1: around the game, But we talked about this before, and
- 11:09Speaker 1: I don't want to belabor it. If you respect the
- 11:12Speaker 1: game and you respect your craft, you want to reach
- 11:15Speaker 1: your standard, or at least come close to it. And
- 11:17Speaker 1: I think that my standard in a number of areas,
- 11:20Speaker 1: but one of them was calling baseball was pretty high
- 11:23Speaker 1: and I tried as best I could, but I couldn't
- 11:25Speaker 1: consistently reach that standard. If you let me edit all
- 11:29Speaker 1: the games, it just put together, here's the best hour
- 11:31Speaker 1: of these three. And you know, then it might have
- 11:33Speaker 1: sounded just like it always did, or pretty close. But
- 11:36Speaker 1: I knew I just couldn't do it as well as
- 11:39Speaker 1: I wanted to anymore. You know, father time is undefeated.
- 11:42Speaker 1: I can still do the other things, a number of
- 11:44Speaker 1: them pretty much as well as I ever did, but
- 11:47Speaker 1: I just can't. I couldn't reach that standard. And that
- 11:50Speaker 1: was my own decision. No one forced me into it.
- 11:52Speaker 1: There was no pressure of any kind. That was my
- 11:54Speaker 1: own decision. And as I may have told you guys,
- 11:57Speaker 1: I made it a year and a half before the
- 11:59Speaker 1: twenty four season. As soon as the twenty three season
- 12:02Speaker 1: was over with, or toward the end of that season,
- 12:04Speaker 1: I said, next year will be my last one, and
- 12:07Speaker 1: I was only just hoping to end on some kind
- 12:09Speaker 1: of grace note that I could feel good about. You know,
- 12:13Speaker 1: it's maybe a tortured analogy. I'm hoping that Clayton Kershaw
- 12:17Speaker 1: gets into at least one game. I hope it's at
- 12:20Speaker 1: Dodger Stadium, and I hope he sets the side down one, two, three,
- 12:23Speaker 1: and it could be a lopsided game and just a
- 12:25Speaker 1: mop up role. But he walks off the mound in
- 12:27Speaker 1: that scenario feeling good about that moment. Now, even if
- 12:31Speaker 1: he came in and gave up four straight home runs
- 12:33Speaker 1: and then was pulled, that doesn't change the truth about
- 12:35Speaker 1: his Hall of Fame career. But you want to feel
- 12:38Speaker 1: good about the ending, and I didn't quite manage that.
- 12:42Speaker 1: And it's only because of it's baseball. You know, if
- 12:45Speaker 1: I had done not so well on some other assignment,
- 12:48Speaker 1: I wouldn't like it because you're a professional, you care
- 12:50Speaker 1: about your craft. But because it was baseball, you know,
- 12:53Speaker 1: it was a little more emotional for me in that respect,
- 12:55Speaker 1: and I just I wish I could have done better.
- 12:57Speaker 1: But I did do my best, but my best was
- 12:59Speaker 1: no longer good enough.
- 13:01Speaker 5: Baseball is a place in everybody's heart, and you have
- 13:04Speaker 5: a place in everybody's head calling games. So I appreciate
- 13:08Speaker 5: that from you. And I never saw anything that was
- 13:10Speaker 5: different so or heard anything that was different.
- 13:14Speaker 1: That's nice. That's nice of you. You know, by the way,
- 13:17Speaker 1: when when you know your form of players, you put
- 13:20Speaker 1: yourself in a situation, whatever the game situation is that
- 13:23Speaker 1: you're watching. I can't help but think, boy, Brian Anderson
- 13:27Speaker 1: did a great job on that Otani call. You can't
- 13:30Speaker 1: just say going, going, gone, your boilerplate call. He understood
- 13:33Speaker 1: the moment and he framed it with his call. There's
- 13:37Speaker 1: so many good young broadcasters. Kevin Brown who does the Orioles,
- 13:41Speaker 1: he did earlier series. You the group that you were
- 13:45Speaker 1: with AJ and then in that threesome. And I love
- 13:47Speaker 1: the story though about getting ejected from a game. I
- 13:50Speaker 1: like it when guys get anecdotal as opposed to always analytical,
- 13:54Speaker 1: and you're talking about how you had to explain it
- 13:56Speaker 1: to your son, like why you got to go out
- 13:58Speaker 1: of the game and edit what you actually said to
- 14:00Speaker 1: the umpire. I love that kind of stuff that colors baseball.
- 14:04Speaker 1: And there are so many good broadcasters. Now, I don't
- 14:07Speaker 1: need to take up any more space.
- 14:10Speaker 5: All right, Well, you were watching the last series. Let's
- 14:13Speaker 5: let's hear what you have to say about, anecdotally or
- 14:17Speaker 5: analytically about the move that Dan Wilson made to pitch
- 14:23Speaker 5: not their best two relievers and go with the Gizarno,
- 14:27Speaker 5: a good reliever but not their best. What were you
- 14:30Speaker 5: saying to yourself as.
- 14:31Speaker 1: You're watching it? Not a second. Guess in the moment,
- 14:35Speaker 1: I'm just sitting there right what are they doing? You've
- 14:39Speaker 1: got to go to Muno's in that situation. People have
- 14:42Speaker 1: been saying this forever, even in some regular season games.
- 14:45Speaker 1: Why wouldn't you use your best guy when the game
- 14:47Speaker 1: is on the line. There runners on second and third.
- 14:51Speaker 1: Even if Munos can't finish the game, if he gets
- 14:53Speaker 1: you out of that and then he pitches the eighth, okay,
- 14:56Speaker 1: then you can bring somebody else in in the interim.
- 14:59Speaker 1: No one ever met men this. What if we score again?
- 15:02Speaker 1: What if we pad our lead a little bit? So
- 15:04Speaker 1: then there's less pressure on Brash or Bizardo or whomever
- 15:08Speaker 1: you bring in the game. And the series and the
- 15:11Speaker 1: season are on the line right now, you have to
- 15:14Speaker 1: go with your best and there is stats to show
- 15:18Speaker 1: you know. This was the third time in the series
- 15:20Speaker 1: that Springer had faced Bizardo. He had never faced Muno's
- 15:24Speaker 1: during the series. So you guys know better than I
- 15:27Speaker 1: having that second third look at a guy and his
- 15:30Speaker 1: repertoire on what he's going after you with. And if
- 15:33Speaker 1: you talk about a reliever, the reliever generally comes in
- 15:36Speaker 1: there with two or three pitches. Max starters have have more.
- 15:40Speaker 1: There are quantifiable stats to indicate that the idea of
- 15:45Speaker 1: multiple looks at a pitcher definitely helps the hitter. So
- 15:49Speaker 1: that's another factor in this situation. Look, Dan Wilson did
- 15:53Speaker 1: a very good job got them to the cusp of
- 15:54Speaker 1: the World Series, but I can't follow the rationale in
- 15:58Speaker 1: not going to Muno's and that's situation.
- 16:02Speaker 2: Hey, Bob, you live in southern California, so you're part
- 16:06Speaker 2: of Los Angeles, okay, because you know they like the
- 16:08Speaker 2: Anaheim Angels are part of Los Angeles, Like they're not
- 16:10Speaker 2: even close, but you know there's still the Los Angeles
- 16:12Speaker 2: Angels of Anaheim, which I've yet to figure out. But
- 16:16Speaker 2: have you seen what's going on with them? The no
- 16:18Speaker 2: air conditioning thing, one year contract for their manager, Like,
- 16:22Speaker 2: do you follow it all? Because this is a great
- 16:24Speaker 2: soap opera. The lawsuit thing is that's happening. I mean,
- 16:27Speaker 2: this is all happening in the same time. It's it's craziness.
- 16:31Speaker 1: Yeah, they're kind of a star crossed franchise. You know,
- 16:35Speaker 1: they signed Albert Pooholes. He's still at his peak. He
- 16:37Speaker 1: became a good player, but not a great player like
- 16:40Speaker 1: he was in all those incredibly epic years with the Cardinals.
- 16:45Speaker 1: They they retained Trout, they tried to some extent to
- 16:51Speaker 1: retain Otani. They signed Rendon coming off a great year
- 16:54Speaker 1: when the Nats won the World Series, and Rendon decides
- 16:56Speaker 1: he doesn't want to play baseball anymore. You can't say
- 17:00Speaker 1: that Artie Moreno wasn't trying. And then the lawsuit thing
- 17:04Speaker 1: which was tossed in there. I don't know if the
- 17:06Speaker 1: one year deal for Suzuki indicates that we'll see what
- 17:10Speaker 1: happens after a potential lockout. It's not exactly a vote
- 17:14Speaker 1: of confidence, you know. I know he's a respected guy
- 17:17Speaker 1: around baseball, but when all the players have much more
- 17:21Speaker 1: security than the manager does, I don't know that it
- 17:24Speaker 1: helps the situation. But I'm looking at this from a distance.
- 17:27Speaker 1: I don't have any insight info.

- 18:33Speaker 4: Okay, that's fair.
- 18:34Speaker 2: That's fair because we're before you, before you spoke to
- 18:37Speaker 2: us like God in our headsets, we were kind of
- 18:39Speaker 2: digging into it, so you know, we have to go
- 18:41Speaker 2: back to it after you get off. So we wanted
- 18:42Speaker 2: to get God's thoughts on that too, all right, before
- 18:45Speaker 2: we speaking of God, used to.
- 18:46Speaker 4: Work for NBC back back in this ya.
- 18:49Speaker 2: You used to do the NBA and it was kind
- 18:51Speaker 2: of when I was growing up, it was Jordan, and
- 18:53Speaker 2: before that it was Magic and Larry and that whole thing.
- 18:56Speaker 2: But Jordan was kind of the guy that like kind
- 18:58Speaker 2: of took the NBA to the next Your thoughts on
- 19:01Speaker 2: him doing broadcasting because he kicked it off the other
- 19:04Speaker 2: night and he sat down to the story he gave
- 19:06Speaker 2: about having to shoot the free throw and being nervous.
- 19:09Speaker 4: I thought was awesome, And I know Michael, You know, Michael.
- 19:12Speaker 4: How cool is it that he's going to be on
- 19:14Speaker 4: TV telling kind of his mindset.
- 19:16Speaker 1: It's really cool. I think the way they're going to
- 19:19Speaker 1: use him and this is the smart way to use him.
- 19:21Speaker 1: Mike Tariko went down to Florida and interviewed him for
- 19:24Speaker 1: like two hours, and they'll release a lot of that
- 19:26Speaker 1: in little three and four minute chunks like they did
- 19:29Speaker 1: on the first game on Tuesday night. What you want
- 19:32Speaker 1: him for is historical overview. You don't want him to
- 19:36Speaker 1: break down the first half. Someone else can do that
- 19:39Speaker 1: at halftime. But you want his view on how the
- 19:42Speaker 1: game has changed. You want to pose this kind of
- 19:44Speaker 1: question to him, I would think, and maybe Mike did
- 19:47Speaker 1: somewhere along the line. If the Bulls at their peak
- 19:49Speaker 1: play the Warriors at their peak? Who guards Curry and
- 19:53Speaker 1: who guards you? Then you move to the edge of
- 19:55Speaker 1: your seat to hear Jordan's answer. You don't want to
- 19:58Speaker 1: waste Michael Jordan's time by saying the Celtics had a
- 20:02Speaker 1: cold shooting first half, what should they do in the
- 20:04Speaker 1: second half? The zillion guys who can analyze that. You
- 20:07Speaker 1: want the stories and and the the insight from a
- 20:12Speaker 1: big picture perspective. For Michael Jordan, I wouldn't expect except
- 20:16Speaker 1: maybe on the conference finals. Uh espn ABC has the finals,
- 20:20Speaker 1: but NBC has the conference finals. Except for the conference finals,
- 20:24Speaker 1: I wouldn't expect to see Michael at the scene at all.
- 20:28Speaker 1: I think he'll just, you know, do something from a
- 20:30Speaker 1: distance if he does it, and the great majority of
- 20:33Speaker 1: what he'll do, at least during the regular season is
- 20:35Speaker 1: already in the can. In that long interview he did
- 20:37Speaker 1: with Tariko, that's a good call.
- 20:41Speaker 4: Look, it was awesome.
- 20:42Speaker 2: If you saw that interview, it was awesome where he's like,
- 20:43Speaker 2: I had to shoot free throws. I sold my but
- 20:45Speaker 2: he said he sold his house and the guy or
- 20:47Speaker 2: something and he had to shoot a free throw for
- 20:49Speaker 2: this kid, and he's like, I was shaking in my boots.
- 20:51Speaker 1: It was aj aj, you're you're connected to one of
- 20:56Speaker 1: my few public athletic moments because you couldn't you couldn't
- 21:01Speaker 1: turn my wild pitch, which really could have been a
- 21:03Speaker 1: pass ball. You couldn't snare it. Okay, this reminds me
- 21:08Speaker 1: we're talking about Jordan. This is the truth. And there
- 21:10Speaker 1: were witnesses. Larry Bird Night at Boston Garden nineteen ninety
- 21:15Speaker 1: two or ninety three. So I'm the MC. There's no game,
- 21:19Speaker 1: but Boston Garden's completely sold out. Magic Johnson shows up
- 21:23Speaker 1: as a surprise. All of Bird's Celtic teammates are there
- 21:27Speaker 1: through the years. So we do a rehearsal in the
- 21:30Speaker 1: afternoon at the garden. And now I'm walking off and
- 21:33Speaker 1: there's a rack of balls and I say, toss me
- 21:37Speaker 1: the balls. We're gonna shoot some free throws. I hit
- 21:39Speaker 1: ten for ten and walked off. I have very few highlights.
- 21:44Speaker 1: That's one of them. Ten for ten hours before Larry Birdnight.
- 21:48Speaker 2: Wait, did anyone see this, because that's like me saying
- 21:51Speaker 2: I played golf and I made a hole in one.
- 21:52Speaker 4: But I was playing by myself.
- 21:54Speaker 1: So yes, there were witnesses. There were witnesses. I'm sure
- 21:57Speaker 1: they would sign an Affi David.
- 22:00Speaker 4: All right, the DA in NDA. They signed in DA.
- 22:05Speaker 1: In fairness, In fairness. I was at the University of
- 22:08Speaker 1: Indiana a couple of years ago, I had a niece
- 22:11Speaker 1: who was graduating, and so I went to the arena
- 22:14Speaker 1: there with their sports information guy and we're chatting, and
- 22:18Speaker 1: I said, Hey, I haven't shot a long time. Let
- 22:21Speaker 1: me take ten. And I only made five. So I
- 22:24Speaker 1: was hot on bird Night, but thirty years later I
- 22:26Speaker 1: wasn't close to it. Was good.
- 22:29Speaker 4: Ten for ten though, And you walk yes or no, Bob?
- 22:32Speaker 4: Were you doing the Olympics.
- 22:35Speaker 1: No? No, not not in Milan, not the Winter Olympics,
- 22:40Speaker 1: you know, with the with the domestic Olympics in twenty
- 22:43Speaker 1: twenty eight, you know, I think that NBC will lean
- 22:46Speaker 1: into some of the nostalgia of it. I would assume
- 22:49Speaker 1: that almost every prominent American Summer Olympian would be there.
- 22:53Speaker 1: You expect to see Michael Phelps there, and Simone Biles
- 22:56Speaker 1: and Carl Lewis and all that sort of stuff. And
- 22:58Speaker 1: I would imagine, just as they'll do with the NBA,
- 23:03Speaker 1: that they'll lean into some of their broadcasting history. So,
- 23:06Speaker 1: assuming I'm still upright, and sometimes people can't tell when
- 23:10Speaker 1: I'm upright, I'm sitting now, but if I'm still able
- 23:14Speaker 1: to do it, I would imagine that I might drop
- 23:16Speaker 1: by now and then in twenty eight in Los Angeles.
- 23:18Speaker 2: Good, I know who to call for tickets, and I
- 23:20Speaker 2: wanted to know, so I wanted to do yes.
- 23:22Speaker 3: But Bobby look great. So it's always a pleasure. You know,
- 23:25Speaker 3: we appreciate it. I know that we are we are
- 23:29Speaker 3: to do with how we do the show and all
- 23:31Speaker 3: of that.
- 23:32Speaker 1: So thanks for That's just because that's Scott. That's because
- 23:35Speaker 1: I'm technophobic. You know, I had a flip phone until
- 23:38Speaker 1: seven or eight years ago, so I can't figure anything
- 23:40Speaker 1: out except for a simple zoom. So that was my
- 23:43Speaker 1: only condition. I'll do the show anytime you guys ask,
- 23:46Speaker 1: but it has to be on a simple zoom and
- 23:47Speaker 1: before we run here just the thought the last time
- 23:50Speaker 1: I was on, which was before the season started, And
- 23:52Speaker 1: you know, you can't place too much credence in comments,
- 23:56Speaker 1: but foolishly I looked at some of the comments after
- 23:58Speaker 1: that appearance, and I guess this is just natural. One
- 24:01Speaker 1: of the subjects was Soto and then also Otani, and
- 24:06Speaker 1: people infer wrongly that because you work for MLB network,
- 24:11Speaker 1: you're automatically just chirping a party line. But anyone that
- 24:14Speaker 1: knows anything about me knows that I've always said whatever
- 24:18Speaker 1: I think politely, I hope, But when interviewing commissioners or
- 24:22Speaker 1: whatever it is, my opinions are my own. They're not
- 24:24Speaker 1: something that's issued from the commissioner's office. So when I
- 24:27Speaker 1: had said a year before that that it's good for
- 24:30Speaker 1: baseball that Otani signed with the Dodgers, that's just true overall.
- 24:36Speaker 1: Look at what he's brought to the game overall. If
- 24:39Speaker 1: he was in a smaller market, just figured to say
- 24:43Speaker 1: that some way there was a way that a smaller
- 24:45Speaker 1: market could entice him to be there. Then you don't
- 24:48Speaker 1: get the ripple effect. And now it's more than a
- 24:50Speaker 1: ripple effect. He's going to get booed. In Toronto. People
- 24:53Speaker 1: thought that I and others were dissing the Blue Jays
- 24:56Speaker 1: because apparently they were in the mix for Otani, like
- 24:59Speaker 1: oh you know Canada, or oh you don't like the
- 25:02Speaker 1: Blue Jays, or oh you're in the dodgers hip pocket. No,
- 25:05Speaker 1: it's an objective assessment of what this means, not just
- 25:09Speaker 1: for the Dodgers, but for baseball. This is good for
- 25:13Speaker 1: baseball overall. No one's Michael Jordan. But when Michael Jordan
- 25:17Speaker 1: was at his peak in the nineties, the other teams
- 25:19Speaker 1: in the NBA should have chipped in and helped the
- 25:21Speaker 1: Bulls pay his salary because he was good for the league,
- 25:24Speaker 1: not just good for the Bulls. Otani is good for baseball,
- 25:28Speaker 1: not just in America but internationally, and now that Toronto's
- 25:31Speaker 1: in it, that's good for baseball internationally. And let them
- 25:34Speaker 1: boo their lungs out. Luckily for him, he's going to
- 25:36Speaker 1: start at Dodger Stadium, but they're still going to have
- 25:40Speaker 1: to contend with him at the plate. So you know,
- 25:43Speaker 1: one of the things I'm just I just like to
- 25:45Speaker 1: talk baseball. You can stop me whatever you want. When
- 25:47Speaker 1: people talked about when people talked about what's comparable to
- 25:51Speaker 1: the three homer game and the six shutout endings with
- 25:54Speaker 1: the ten strikeouts, there's nothing directly comparable. And the postseason
- 25:58Speaker 1: and the spotlight matters. But as you guys know, Rick
- 26:03Speaker 1: Wise once pitched a no hitter that was a near
- 26:06Speaker 1: perfect game. Only one guy reached and he hit two
- 26:09Speaker 1: home runs in the game. Still doesn't match with Tani,
- 26:11Speaker 1: but that never comes up in this conversation. The other
- 26:15Speaker 1: one would be Gibson pitching perfect game in nineteen sixty
- 26:18Speaker 1: seven to win it for the Cardinals in game seven
- 26:20Speaker 1: at Fenway Park. So he pitches a complete game. It's
- 26:24Speaker 1: this third complete game of the series, all three of
- 26:26Speaker 1: them wins, and he hits a homer at Fenway Park.
- 26:29Speaker 1: He was a good hitting pitcher. But just citing those things,
- 26:31Speaker 1: as remarkable as they are, is proof. You know, Poohol's
- 26:34Speaker 1: going five for six in a World Series game in
- 26:36Speaker 1: twenty eleven and three of them are homers. All those
- 26:39Speaker 1: incredible things. Reggie hitting three homers on the pitch first
- 26:42Speaker 1: pitch three times in the last game in seventy seven,
- 26:44Speaker 1: as great as all those things are. Well, Tani Trump's
- 26:47Speaker 1: the Hall.
- 26:49Speaker 3: That was the beauty and it was a good history lesson.
- 26:51Speaker 3: We did segments on it just to bring up the
- 26:53Speaker 3: amazing feats in baseball in the past.
- 26:56Speaker 4: We do have to jump.
- 26:56Speaker 3: You're right, I'm getting the producer.
- 27:00Speaker 4: This was great.
- 27:00Speaker 1: Thank you so much.
- 27:01Speaker 4: We need to make you a regular on here so
- 27:03Speaker 4: we can put them back. Now.
- 27:04Speaker 3: We got the now, we got the zoom and the
- 27:06Speaker 3: iPad set up. We're going to go now.
- 27:07Speaker 1: Yea happen a hundred people call my people?
- 27:10Speaker 4: You got it? Sorry, thanks bothering the series.
- 27:15Speaker 1: See you guys.
