- 0:00Hello, and welcome to today's episode of Thrive After 45.
- 0:05I'm Denise Drinkwalter, midlife mirror and mentor, and every week I am honored to share energy and space with inspiring guests whose stories reflect so many possibilities of thriving beyond 45.
- 0:21Together, we uncover the whispers of the heart, the power of midlife transformation, and the wisdom that fuels expansion, because when one woman turns her light on, the rest of the room catches fire What if your body isn't broken, it's just asking the wrong questions for years?
- 0:46That's a belief my next guest has built her entire career on.
- 0:50It started decades ago while her- while she was homeschooling her son.
- 0:56He couldn't focus, he couldn't sit still, and every answer she tried had come up totally empty.
- 1:03And then one day on the radio, she heard a panel of parents describing children with ADHD, and with an incredible jolt, she realized they were describing her own son.
- 1:15And rather than accept a diagnosis and a prescription, she went looking for the root cause.
- 1:22A library book by a pediatric allergist led her to a theory that many cases of ADHD trace back to allergic reactions to artificial colors and flavors in food.
- 1:33She stripped those ingredients from her son's diet, and within two weeks she had a calmer, more focused child, by changing what he ate.
- 1:45Well, that discovery launched a 13-year journey into the connection between food, lifestyle, and health.
- 1:54Today, she works as a functional wellness health coach, using functional medicine principles to help clients get to the root of the chronic that conventional medicine often struggles to explain.
- 2:07Things like Type 2 diabetes, IBS, PCOS, autoimmune activations such as Hashimoto's, lupus, rheumatoid arthri- arthritis, and Where traditional medicine tends to overlook the microbiome and the body as a whole, she brings a holistic lens that connects the dots.
- 2:29She also supports cancer patients through treatment, helping build resilience in the rest of their body while their medical team focuses on the disease, because without that support, the body can actually become collateral damage in the fight of cancer.
- 2:45So over the past 13 years, she's personally coached and guided several hundred clients and reached hundreds more through her book, Thriving Through Cancer: A Holistic Approach for Your Journey.
- 3:00It is an honor and a privilege to welcome Kelly Lutman to our show today.
- 3:04Thank you for being here.
- 3:06I know.
- 3:07I'm so excited to have this conversation.
- 3:09We were, I'm gonna start off with a bang because we were talking before the show started, and there is an incredible that occurred when I was told about the book, and I'm gonna hold it up for those of you who are on YouTube, Thriving Through Cancer: A Holistic Approach for Your Journey.
- 3:31And that book came actually to my front door, what's today, the 15th?
- 3:38It came five days ago.
- 3:41because I had a friend that I met along my journey of the podcast, and she suggested I, I find this book because we have a recent diagnosis, in our family.
- 3:51My husband has been diagnosed with another cancer.
- 3:54And I was like, cancer number two, I think we need to do something, not different, but look at all the pieces of the puzzle here.
- 4:02how can I support him in his journey now and support myself?" Well, lo and behold, folks, I was told to c- purchase this book by Kelly Lutman, and then it never dawned on me that I had already scheduled to have Kelly on our show because, I get so many guests and we book...
- 4:20How far ahead did we book this?
- 4:22Like- It was months ago.
- 4:23Yeah, yeah.
- 4:23I think we booked in the spring maybe.
- 4:25Yeah.
- 4:25Yeah.
- 4:25Yeah, yeah.
- 4:26So- It was out of both of our minds, but then- Right?
- 4:29it comes up on the calendar, and amazing to find- Yeah that you find I'm the one you're speaking to- Yes and you just received my book.
- 4:37That's amazing.
- 4:37Like, just so incredible.
- 4:40So it, it's, it's a even a bigger honor than I even imagined, because of the situation.
- 4:45And the, and not the situation, because of the journey that we are going on- Mm-hmm in the next little while as a family.
- 4:52So I am honored and thrilled to share this space with you, and I can't wait to dig in to learn how important, crucial, lifesaving it is to understand the wholeness of one's self.
- 5:10Yes.
- 5:10So can you give us- Yes yeah, give us an idea of why is it so important for us to understand whole?
- 5:16When you say whole, W-H-O-L-E, what exactly are we referencing here?
- 5:21All of you Which is body, we're familiar with our body, and that's what we think of when we go to see the doctor.
- 5:28Right.
- 5:28But mind plays into it, too.
- 5:30Mind-body medicine is becoming much more prolific, and- Yeah sci- scientific studies are coming out all the time talking about how the mind affects what happens in the body, and the body can affect the mind.
- 5:43Mm-hmm.
- 5:44And then there's the spiritual aspect that I- Mm added into the book as well because we need to have hope.
- 5:50We need- Mm to live in gratitude.
- 5:52Yeah.
- 5:52We need to understand and the, the com- the vi- vitality that comes from being loved and- Mm loving others.
- 6:00Mm-hmm.
- 6:01All of those pertain to our spiritual side.
- 6:04Right.
- 6:05But they affect our overall health.
- 6:07And, medicine has been developed over the 100 years or so, prob- probably 150 years that medicine has really been becoming more prominent.
- 6:17Right.
- 6:17But it is designed to separate a person into portions.
- 6:23You've got- Okay the orthopedic and you've got the endocrinologist and, y- the OBGYN, and all these different specialties.
- 6:31Mm-hmm.
- 6:31But they don't look at the whole person.
- 6:33Mm.
- 6:33They don't look at how it all works together.
- 6:36I find clients come to me, and they've seen- Right a cardiologist, and they've seen the endocrinologist, and they've seen these different ones, and they have- Yeah prescribed different things, but they never looked at how it all comes together.
- 6:48Right.
- 6:49And I pull back, instead of looking- Mm-hmm at the branches of the tree, I wanna pull back and look at- Mm the whole tree.
- 6:54Mm-hmm.
- 6:55The whole piece, and what is interacting here and here and here?
- 7:00Because- Mm-hmm often we have symptoms, which I don't consider symptoms to be something you just shut down with a medication.
- 7:07Mm-hmm.
- 7:07Symptoms are my roadmap.
- 7:08Right.
- 7:09That's guiding me.
- 7:10It's the body's way of messaging because- Right we don't have an internal text system in our body.
- 7:16Right.
- 7:16Mm-hmm.
- 7:16And we don't have this cursor on our forehead that says- Right"Hello, I need this." the body speaks- Right through symptoms.
- 7:23Okay.
- 7:23And if we spend our time- ignoring, shutting down the symptom.
- 7:27You have a headache, so you grab a pill and a glass of water.
- 7:30Mm-hmm.
- 7:30Sometimes you just needed that glass of water- Mm because you were dehydrated.
- 7:35You didn't really need the pill.
- 7:36Right.
- 7:37And if you lean for those pills too often, even- Mm-hmm the over-the-counter pills, painkillers especially- Right.
- 7:43Yeah have a negative effect in your body- Mm-hmm if you use them repeatedly on a lot of basis.
- 7:48Right.
- 7:48So I look at the body as a whole system.
- 7:52Mm-hmm.
- 7:52And I listen to my clients' observations,'cause they're in the body.
- 7:57Right.
- 7:57I need their observations of what are they experiencing.
- 8:00What's it like when you first wake up in the morning?
- 8:02What do you notice as you progress through the day?
- 8:05How does your body change and its feelings?
- 8:07Mm-hmm.
- 8:07And those are vital messages for us to use to be able to find the root problem in their body.
- 8:16I don't believe anyone's body is broken.
- 8:18Okay.
- 8:19I was just gonna...
- 8:20Yeah.
- 8:20We're not broken.
- 8:21Yeah.
- 8:21We're just needing a different support.
- 8:24Right.
- 8:24And a lot of the support, we, we look to, okay, n- I need a medication, I need this, I need that, but how many thousands of years did humans live without- Mm our medical system and our medications?
- 8:37And we used food, and we used lifestyle changes in your environment.
- 8:43Right.
- 8:44That was how you supported the body.
- 8:46Right.
- 8:46And our bodies are designed to be out in nature.
- 8:49Yes.
- 8:50But the more, the more urbanized we become- Mm-hmm the less we encounter nature.
- 8:57We need sunlight in our eyes first thing in the morning for our circadian rhythm.
- 9:01Mm-hmm.
- 9:01We need contact with the ground on bare feet- Mm-hmm for, to be, to be able to receive the negative electrons that come up from the ground and balance our bodies out.
- 9:11That can be a great pain reliever.
- 9:13Mm.
- 9:13Go stand in the grass or on the sand.
- 9:17If you want, stand on dirt.
- 9:19Yeah.
- 9:19Yeah, yeah.
- 9:20Yeah.
- 9:20All of that allows your body to send electrons up into your bo- or receive electrons.
- 9:26Mm-hmm.
- 9:27And it can be relaxing and relieve pain.
- 9:30It's amazing.
- 9:32Mm.
- 9:32Wow.
- 9:32It didn't need a pill.
- 9:33Wow.
- 9:35That's incredible.
- 9:36I didn't...
- 9:36I, I've seen, I've seen those, I'm gonna say carpets.
- 9:40They're not carpets, but I've seen those, they've developed- The grounding pads?
- 9:44Yeah, the pads.
- 9:45Oh, Yeah.
- 9:46Do they- Yeah is that the same concept?
- 9:48I don't know.
- 9:49It's the concept.
- 9:50Yeah.
- 9:50There you go.
- 9:51But I'd rather be grounded with the- Yeah real ground, with the real earth- Yeah than through a wire in the socket on the, on the wall.
- 9:57Yep.
- 9:58Nope, I, yep.
- 9:59there are times that you need extra, and so- Sure you can use shee- grounding sheets under your bedsheets on the bed.
- 10:06Yep.
- 10:06And there are even shoes that are made that, when we, we'll go around in rubber shoes, rubber does not conduct- Right the- Yep the electrons, and so they make shoes leather based, leather b-bottom shoes.
- 10:18Okay.
- 10:18Will.
- 10:19Yeah.
- 10:19Yeah.
- 10:19So the more natural it is- Interesting.
- 10:21Yeah the better you can connect with the ground.
- 10:24Mm-hmm.
- 10:24And that is nourishing to our bodies.
- 10:26Love that.
- 10:28Is it your understanding and/or belief and/or both that when we are out of balance in our whole body- Mm-hmm and we don't understand or reach for figuring out what the symptom is telling us, if we just keep ignoring it, does it stay stuck, the energy stay stuck and can morph into ailments?
- 10:53Mm-hmm.
- 10:54I've heard that.
- 10:54Yeah.
- 10:54I've heard that.
- 10:55Yeah.
- 10:55But I, I don't know.
- 10:56Yeah quiet messages, gentle messages, but if you ignore or you shut it down with medication, then that, that con- that source continues- Yeah to be a problem, and even taking the medication doesn't fix the, the root- Right of the problem.
- 11:12Yeah.
- 11:12It's just Band-Aids.
- 11:13I tell my clients it's like the brake light comes on your dashboard- Mm but because it's a pain and it's bothering and aggravating you, you reach behind and you cut the wire- Mm that turns off the light, but that doesn't fix the brakes.
- 11:26Right.
- 11:26Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 11:27And you're gonna have a bigger problem later.
- 11:29Right.
- 11:29Yeah.
- 11:30So, so realizing that- Yeah having a headache can be a gift.
- 11:35Mm-hmm.
- 11:35It's your body giving you a relatively gentle way of saying,"I need some support." Mm-hmm.
- 11:40Maybe you need more water.
- 11:41Maybe you need magnesium.
- 11:43Maybe you need to slow down- Mm and give yourself some rest.
- 11:48Mm-hmm.
- 11:48Mm-hmm.
- 11:49Which way too many peop- the- the person that originated sleep is overrated was- Yeah I, I want to meet that person because I bet you they were not healthy.
- 11:59Yeah.
- 12:00Right?
- 12:01No.
- 12:02Oh.
- 12:02Yeah.
- 12:03Some of the things that people, that or, that's okay, I'll sleep when I'm dead.
- 12:06Yeah.
- 12:07It could come sooner than you expected.
- 12:08Right.
- 12:09Yeah, yeah.
- 12:09Don't, don't- There's a problem with that.
- 12:11Say out loud what you're wishing for, Yeah.
- 12:13By mistake.
- 12:14And I speak to business owners- Yeah.
- 12:16Mm-hmm and say, especially if you are a solopreneur, an entrepreneur- Yeah.
- 12:21Yeah your body is one of the most important things to your business.
- 12:25Mm.
- 12:26Because if you push, you, you may have a fabulous service, you may have a fabulous vision for what you're going to do.
- 12:32Mm-hmm.
- 12:33And when you get things started, it takes a lot of work, but if you don't mind the support of your body- Mm-hmm it can shut your business down.
- 12:40Mm.
- 12:41And quickly, right?
- 12:42Yes.
- 12:43Oh, yeah.
- 12:43So be mindful.
- 12:45Yeah.
- 12:45It's important.
- 12:46Yeah, yeah.
- 12:48The power that you have, and, and our whole show is based on what are you going to do for you, by you, because of you.
- 12:55Mm-hmm.
- 12:55So this conversation is so rich because what I'm hearing you say is your opportunity, and I'm gonna even push the button even further, it's your responsibility- Yes to ensure that you not only pay attention to your whole self, messages included, but respond to it- Yes in a way that treats you as you are as important as all the family members you try to take care of at all times, right?
- 13:25Exactly.
- 13:26Exactly.
- 13:26Yeah.
- 13:27I, I talk to moms often.
- 13:29Yeah.
- 13:29And I've had...
- 13:29I've got three daughters-in-law with my grandkids.
- 13:31Yes.
- 13:32And I say, it's just like when you get on the airplane, and they-" Yeah give you the safety briefing, the air s- air mask drops down.
- 13:38Oxygen mask, yeah.
- 13:39You put yours on first because you can't support these kids if you are run down.
- 13:44Yeah.
- 13:44Yeah.
- 13:45It goes across the board.
- 13:46But, but beyond opportunity or responsibility- Yeah my desire is to empower people.
- 13:52Mm.
- 13:54You have the power to make a difference in your health before you even see the doctor.
- 14:00Right.
- 14:00Yes.
- 14:01And it's through the power of food.
- 14:03Mm-hmm.
- 14:03Maybe you're feeding your body stuff that's not nourishing it- Mm-hmm or that your body is reacting to, and you don't realize- Mm.
- 14:11Mm-hmm the reaction messages you're getting.
- 14:13Mm-hmm.
- 14:14Maybe your body needs a different support, a different supply of food.
- 14:18Yeah.
- 14:19Yeah.
- 14:19And then the, the lifestyle things, the food, the, not only the food, but, but movement.
- 14:25Yes.
- 14:25How many of us sit at a desk- Yeah hours in the day and don't- Right move our bodies?
- 14:30Mm-hmm.
- 14:30movement, outdoor time, sleep, nourishment, Yes.
- 14:34Water.
- 14:35Yeah.
- 14:35Yeah.
- 14:36so important.
- 14:37Yeah.
- 14:37But then relationships.
- 14:39Mm.
- 14:40It's something that a lot of coach- Oh, you froze But there are those outliers who maybe feel like,"I'm happier without people." Yeah.
- 14:51Yeah.
- 14:52But most of us need connection with people.
- 14:55Right.
- 14:55We need that interaction.
- 14:57Yeah.
- 14:57We need relationships.
- 14:59That's a part of our healthy- Yeah empowerment as well.
- 15:02Right.
- 15:02So I want to empower people with these are some of the basic things can do- Yeah to support you- Mm-hmm so that you can do for others.
- 15:12Yeah.
- 15:12Because if you don't fill your jug, fill your pitcher, you can't pour out to others.
- 15:17Yeah.
- 15:17Yeah.
- 15:18And we conceptually understand that, where- Mm-hmm I find women in particular have the biggest struggle is putting that into practice.
- 15:27Yes.
- 15:27Yeah.
- 15:27And how do help change that so it doesn't become other than...
- 15:32Like, the oxygen mask is brilliant because they always show it, and it's true.
- 15:36If you can't breathe, you can't help the kid beside you.
- 15:39You can't help your husband.
- 15:40Yeah.
- 15:41If you're not breathing, you're- And you don't have to be on an airplane.
- 15:43Yeah, it's like- It doesn't have to be only on an airplane.
- 15:45It's- Yeah all life every day.
- 15:46Right?
- 15:47Yeah.
- 15:47So yeah.
- 15:48Yeah.
- 15:49It's...
- 15:50You take steps.
- 15:52Yeah.
- 15:52So, first steps.
- 15:54I- and I always am looking at, at analyzing, w- what, where are we now?
- 15:58What are your greatest concerns?
- 16:00Yes.
- 16:00But one of the things I start with is hydration.
- 16:03Yeah.
- 16:03Because most people are not hydrated.
- 16:06They drink a lot of liquids, but they're liquids that don't hydrate because- if they've got a lot of added ingredients, if they've got sugar in them, sugar dehydrates.
- 16:15Mm-hmm.
- 16:16So if your is super sweet and tasty- Yeah it's not helping your body.
- 16:21Mm-hmm.
- 16:21You need water.
- 16:22In fact, I encourage my clients, start with a full glass of water that you drink before you even get your coffee in the morning.
- 16:28Yeah.
- 16:28Yeah.
- 16:29Then, sca- stage it.
- 16:31You, another glass of water before lunch, another- Mm-hmm in the afternoon.
- 16:35Mm-hmm.
- 16:35several in the afternoon.
- 16:37Don't chug all your water for the day in the evening because you won't sleep real well.
- 16:41Right.
- 16:42Exactly.
- 16:42Yeah.
- 16:43And sometimes it's,"Okay, let's get a pitcher and fill the pitcher of water and leave it on the counter." It's...
- 16:48Yeah, it's- And that's your reminder, w- how am I doing on my water intake?
- 16:51Why do I need extra?
- 16:53Mm-hmm.
- 16:53And some are like,"All I drink is coffee and sodas." Okay.
- 16:57Mm-hmm.
- 16:57Let's trade one.
- 16:58Mm.
- 16:59Yeah.
- 16:59One cup of coffee for water.
- 17:01Yeah.
- 17:01Yeah.
- 17:02Get comfortable with that.
- 17:03Then we'll trade- Yeah another one.
- 17:04Yeah.
- 17:04And so we can slowly crowd out what's working against you- Mm-hmm so that it's not a overwhelming change.
- 17:12Right.
- 17:13Yeah.
- 17:13There's different ways to bring it in.
- 17:14And then switching what you're eating in your food.
- 17:17How much fiber are you getting in your food- Mm.
- 17:21Mm-hmm that feeds the microbiome that is symbiotic with us us vital for our health.
- 17:26Mm-hmm.
- 17:26And so, I'm sorry, but french fries are not vegetables- in, in a full allowance, Mm-hmm.
- 17:33Yeah.
- 17:33We need a variety of different types of vegetables because each has different kinds of fiber feeds different species in our gut.
- 17:40Right.
- 17:40So being mindful of you're not just eating for you, Mm-hmm.
- 17:43It's not just when you're pregnant that you're eating for two.
- 17:45Right.
- 17:46Yeah.
- 17:46But you are also eating to feed and support the microbiome that then supports you with supporting your immune system, giving...
- 17:56The microbiome, when it eats what we can't digest, it puts out vitamins and things that our bodies need.
- 18:03Okay.
- 18:03And so it's, it's very much a symbiotic relationship.
- 18:06Who knew when we saw- Right?
- 18:08all the science fiction shows about something living inside- that we really have it.
- 18:13Right.
- 18:14Although, I don't think it comes out as a head out of the belly button.
- 18:16No.
- 18:17But, Thankfully, it does not.
- 18:18They did take it a little further.
- 18:20Thankfully not.
- 18:21wonderful information.
- 18:23I, one thing that I remember, and I don't remember where it's from, but I remembered it, when we shop for groceries- Mm-hmm the outside, and is this still true?
- 18:36You're nodding your head yes- Yes for those who aren't seeing- Mm-hmm YouTube version of this.
- 18:39But the outside, around the outside edges are the most non-processed food.
- 18:44Yes.
- 18:44So when you get your vegetables...
- 18:45Yeah, go ahead.
- 18:46It's perishable food.
- 18:47Okay.
- 18:47The perishable food.
- 18:48Okay.
- 18:49I, I joke with my clients, I say,"If a, if any self-respecting bacteria won't eat it, you shouldn't either." Because the food that you find on the shelves has been processed so that- Yeah it can stay on the shelves- Stay and look the same for months.
- 19:02Yeah, yeah.
- 19:03Good point.
- 19:03And it's basically dead.
- 19:05It's lost most of its nutrients.
- 19:07Mm-hmm and they may say,"Oh, we fortified.
- 19:09We took stuff out, but we put stuff back in." But what they put in is synthetic- Right that your body doesn't register.
- 19:14Your does- doesn't a- absorb and use.
- 19:17Right.
- 19:17And looking at the produce section, looking at the dairy section- Yeah looking at the meat section, all of those are very valuable.
- 19:24Yeah.
- 19:25and as little processed, as little packaged.
- 19:28Right.
- 19:28Minimal ingredients.
- 19:30Yeah, yeah.
- 19:30If you look, my boys- Mm-hmm used to just go,"Oh, Mom," because I wouldn't look at just the front of the package, I'd turn it around to see the ingredients.
- 19:39Yeah.
- 19:39And, they'd like,"Don't look at that, Mom.
- 19:40Don't look at that." Because they know I'm gonna say,"Okay, I can't pronounce half of these ingredients-" Yeah, yeah which means they're chemicals, and I don't want to put that in my body." Mm-hmm.
- 19:49And so they're like- Mm-hmm"Okay, we can't have that," Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 19:53Yeah, I remember, but it's a, it's a juggle because we've, our food is engineered- Yes, yeah to be addictive.
- 20:01Yeah.
- 20:02Mm-hmm.
- 20:02I hate to say it that way, but literally there are f- food engineers that engineer flavoring to be- Mm-hmm addictive to make you want to eat more.
- 20:11Pringles, when Pringles chips came out, one, once you pop, you can't stop.
- 20:18That was a red flag for me.
- 20:19Yeah.
- 20:19Because that just told me they- Sure fixed it that way.
- 20:23Yeah.
- 20:23And I'm not even gonna pop then.
- 20:25Mm-hmm.
- 20:26Yeah.
- 20:26Because I know it's designed- Sure to draw my body in to want more, and that's not gonna nourish.
- 20:32It'll fill my stomach.
- 20:33It'll taste great.
- 20:33Right.
- 20:34Yeah.
- 20:34But it doesn't feed my body.
- 20:37Yeah, yeah.
- 20:37And that's important.
- 20:38It is important, and it's important for so many reasons that we've already started talking about in terms of our, our health and our response- Mm-hmm to the ailments that we can experience, whether they're momentarily small, a headache here- Sure and there- Mm-hmm or something more, yeah, life-altering, let's say.
- 20:57Significant diagnosis.
- 20:58Right.
- 20:58Yeah.
- 20:58Yeah, yeah.
- 20:58Exactly.
- 20:59Exactly.
- 21:00so I hear people talking about treating your body like a temple.
- 21:04and I, what I'm hearing from you is the body is one piece.
- 21:10We've got the soul, the mind, and the heart.
- 21:13Mm-hmm.
- 21:13Right?
- 21:13All of it.
- 21:14So you're talking- Mm-hmm wholeness, so I appreciate the depth and width of which you share.
- 21:20And I'm not half done the book.
- 21:22I'm about a third way through, but- Mm-hmm I'm getting into those next pieces, and that's the- Yes work that I love to do is how are you feeling, your emotions?
- 21:30Where are you sitting?
- 21:31Right.
- 21:31What's real?
- 21:32What's not real?
- 21:33Let's pull it apart and understand it in a deeper way, right?
- 21:37Exactly.
- 21:38Yeah.
- 21:38And realizing that- Yeah what your body is thinking is your bo- the rest of your body is hearing.
- 21:44Right.
- 21:45So- Right being aware, m- medicine has made, made fun of placebo effect for years.
- 21:52Mm-hmm.
- 21:52For generations, Mm-hmm.
- 21:53And, and it's always looked at in medicine as a negative thing.
- 21:57Right.
- 21:57But now studies are showing it's real.
- 21:59If someone takes a pill that could be just basic sugar, but they are convinced in their head that it's going to make a difference for their health, their body picks up on that and does it.
- 22:10So instead of poo-pooing the p- Yeah placebo effect, why not put it into action?
- 22:16Yeah, yeah.
- 22:17Why not take advantage of if I can feed my mind- Yeah with the positive and the direction that I want to go and believe that, even saying the blessing over my meal,"Thank you for all this amazing nourishment that's gonna come into my body- Mm-hmm and support me in its function." Mm-hmm, yeah.
- 22:35That opens things up for all the possibilities.
- 22:40Yeah, yeah.
- 22:41It's crazy.
- 22:42Yeah.
- 22:42Because your brain- do- it doesn't have the capacity to see if what you're saying is true or not.
- 22:48Exactly.
- 22:48Anything you say is truth.
- 22:50It's all it knows, right?
- 22:51Like,'cause that's what it does.
- 22:53That's how it works.
- 22:54So it's- And it's what you repeat, repeat- Oh, yeah over and over and over again.
- 22:58It's, it picks up on those things.
- 23:00Oh, yeah.
- 23:00And so you just have to- Yeah reframe- Yeah the way you're talking and thinking.
- 23:05Yeah.
- 23:05Yeah.
- 23:05Yeah.
- 23:06And we're talking about it as though everything makes so much sense.
- 23:13Is it harder to do than not?
- 23:16What is, what has been your experience when you work with your clients?
- 23:19Is it harder to actually action?
- 23:22Does...
- 23:22Do you find your clients who are in a more challenging diagnosis, let's say- Mm-hmm have more long-term conviction or is there, is there no correlation there?
- 23:35Partly it depends on their why for coming to me.
- 23:38Perfect.
- 23:38Yeah.
- 23:39Often, often they hear about me, and they come, they, reach out and we have our initial call- Yeah because they've been to numerous practitioners.
- 23:49They don't feel like they've been heard.
- 23:51Yes.
- 23:51They don't feel like anyone really wants to understand what they're dealing with.
- 23:57Mm-hmm.
- 23:57Or they're asking for why, they're asking for answers, and they don't receive answers.
- 24:03Right.
- 24:03Because when it's a chronic disease that is multi-system in the body- Sure medicine doesn't really know how to handle those very well.
- 24:12Mm.
- 24:12Mm-hmm.
- 24:12Mm-hmm.
- 24:13But that's where I take the time to listen, and I draw- Mm asking the questions and drawing things out.
- 24:19Yeah.
- 24:19And then evaluating where do we start, what are the first steps?
- 24:23And honestly, one of the things I'm looking for- Mm-hmm is what is something that we can get some quick relief?
- 24:29Mm.
- 24:29Mm-hmm.
- 24:30the low-hanging fruit they talk about.
- 24:31Mm-hmm.
- 24:32Mm-hmm.
- 24:32What is something that can maybe give them some quick relief so they can see, aha- Right something can make be- get better.
- 24:39Sure.
- 24:39Then that re- sets them for pushing into the deeper stuff- Yeah that need to work on.
- 24:44Yeah.
- 24:45And it's always in the concept, context of- What are your goals?
- 24:50Yeah.
- 24:50And what is your body asking for most?
- 24:53Mm.
- 24:53And how can we strategize your application of this?
- 24:57Nice.
- 24:57Because it's, we go to doctors, the doctor says,"Do this and do this," and you walk out of there going,"How?" Oh, yeah.
- 25:03I don't know how.
- 25:04Right.
- 25:04But- Yeah but when you've got someone there who already understands a little bit of your life- Yeah and is, is asking the questions,"What about this?
- 25:12How would this work?" Right.
- 25:14And giving some ideas to support how you can incorporate it- Mm-hmm so that it's- Mm-hmm not such a, a drastic- Yeah change.
- 25:24Yeah, yeah.
- 25:24That, that can make it easier.
- 25:26Absolutely.
- 25:26But sometimes it's just a long road, and we have- Yeah, yeah to peel the onion little by little- Right and work on things as we go.
- 25:33Yeah.
- 25:33But most of the time they're finding, they're finding changes in just a few weeks.
- 25:39Yeah.
- 25:40And amazed at how it, how they can feel, It's like- Yeah that's the goal because the body- Yeah, exactly can be resilient.
- 25:46Yeah.
- 25:46The body is resilient when it's provided what it needs.
- 25:50Right, yeah, when it has the foundation to be able to.
- 25:53Mm-hmm.
- 25:53Yeah, yeah.
- 25:54Mm-hmm.
- 25:55Yeah.
- 25:55Exactly.
- 25:55Love that.
- 25:56Love that.
- 25:57Is there, what's the primary way that you view supporting health differently than medical practitioners do?
- 26:03You've alluded to it, but is primary.
- 26:05I think we've, yeah, we've alluded to it.
- 26:07Mm-hmm.
- 26:07But to, to make it more specific- Yeah when you go to the doctor they ask you about your symptoms, and they- Yeah prescribe medication that shuts down the symptom.
- 26:15Mm-hmm.
- 26:15I ask about symptoms, but I view those symptoms as the body's messages.
- 26:20Yeah.
- 26:20And I cherish your- Mm y- I really value your observations of what you're feeling in your body because that's our roadmap.
- 26:28That's how it goes.
- 26:29Yeah.
- 26:29And so I'm- Yeah listening to the symptoms, listening and explaining what's going on.
- 26:35Right.
- 26:35Also, just educating, this is what is likely happening.
- 26:39Yeah.
- 26:39And it's because it's tied in in this way.
- 26:42Right.
- 26:42So that when we plan or strategize a change, you understand why behind it.
- 26:48Mm-hmm.
- 26:49Mm-hmm.
- 26:49If you're just told,"Do this," but you- Yeah don't understand the purpose- Yeah behind it, it makes it difficult.
- 26:55Mm-hmm.
- 26:55But I try to do the education along the process so that they're understanding why we're doing this and what- Yeah what their body is asking for- Love that in the process.
- 27:04Love that.
- 27:04So bit, bit of a difference.
- 27:06Yeah.
- 27:06big bit of a difference.
- 27:08And we are so grateful that you have- Found your path, and the way that you found it is incredible, but not surprising based on what I know of you and your book that I've been reading, and- Mm-hmm the accolades that are, that are in the front of the book.
- 27:25I think, what, what did you call it?
- 27:27Let me re- like, I was like,"What did she call that?" advanced praise for the book, and there's gotta be, what, 20, Mm, mm-hmm people that have written snippets about what the power of the book, and the power of Kelly's knowledge and experience, and doing good in the world as a result of- Yeah help, wanting to help people live their lives in full wholeness, right?
- 27:50Yes.
- 27:51Yeah.
- 27:51And I discovered this whole career, this whole path- Yeah long after I was 45.
- 27:57Right?
- 27:57Yeah.
- 27:58Yes, of course you did, because that's when you were ready for it, right?
- 28:02Yes.
- 28:02Yeah.
- 28:03It, it...
- 28:03The, the seeds were planted with my son.
- 28:06Yeah.
- 28:06But I finished homeschooling all three of my sons before I started back to school- Mm to learn and train in this.
- 28:12Yeah.
- 28:13And my husband gra- my husband retired a year and a half ago, but I said- Yeah"I'm not ready to retire." I'm not doing that.
- 28:18I, I've got too much to do still.
- 28:21Well, and it's your form of retirement, because if you love it, is it really- Yes a job, really at the end- No of the day?
- 28:27We know it's not.
- 28:28No, it's- It's...
- 28:29Yeah it's a passion, and- Yeah if, if what I share, w- whether it's on, on, on social media or my blogs- Yeah or my book or whatever, if it makes- Yeah a difference for someone else- Yeah then I've won.
- 28:41That's awesome.
- 28:41I love that.
- 28:42That's exactly- Yeah what I want.
- 28:44Love it.
- 28:44I love it.
- 28:45has there, been any conversation where bringing, marrying your full approach with the medical field in a way that when a person goes into an office, they get a team of support, and you would be on that team?
- 29:02Has that ever been- I haven't really teamed up with- particular practitioners, no.
- 29:07But I tell my clients,"I am not your practitioner.
- 29:11I'm not your doctor." Right.
- 29:11No.
- 29:11I'm not licensed that way.
- 29:13Yeah, yeah.
- 29:13They need...
- 29:14In fact, in my client agreement, they have to agree- Yeah that they still have a practitioner on the, on the side.
- 29:19Absolutely.
- 29:20Yeah.
- 29:20But I join the team.
- 29:22Okay, you do.
- 29:23Yeah.
- 29:23I join the team.
- 29:24Perfect.
- 29:24And so I, and, and often I will, if the practitioner is open to it, I will- Yeah communicate and- Yeah send them emails and advise them on what we have done- Right and what the purpose is.
- 29:35There are times that I'm asking through the client- Yes"Could we do these testing, this testing?" Right.
- 29:40"Is it possible?" And I will explain the why.
- 29:42Sure.
- 29:43so as much as possible, I try to- Yeah work alongside.
- 29:46Perfect.
- 29:47But rarely do the cl- do the practitioners have more than seven to 10 minutes with the client.
- 29:52Of course.
- 29:53yeah.
- 29:53And I spend over an hour- Yeah each session with them.
- 29:55Of course.
- 29:56So it's a little difference in the communication side.
- 29:58Yeah.
- 29:58Of course.
- 29:59Yeah, understandable.
- 30:00But I do like the idea of the team piece.
- 30:03Yes, yes.
- 30:04And I'm sure it's individualized, and I'm sure other, everybody has their, reasons, whether it's the client, whether it's the doctor, whatever.
- 30:12Mm-hmm.
- 30:12I'm just glad that you're doing the work that you're doing in such an extensive way.
- 30:15And we will have in the show notes all the ways to get ahold of Kelly so that if- Awesome this is resonating, which I'm sure everybody in, in the listening audience are raising their hand going,"How...
- 30:26Get the number out, Denise.
- 30:27Get the number out." Give her a call.
- 30:29It's not ma- probably a call, but an, an email or whatever, right?
- 30:32yeah, yeah.
- 30:33Perfect.
- 30:34That's awesome.
- 30:34I would, I would welcome a conversation with someone.
- 30:37Thank you, Kelly.
- 30:38Is there anything you would love to make sure our listeners hear before we wrap up this incredible conversation today?
- 30:45Anything, golden nuggets you want everybody to hear?
- 30:49If they've heard nothing else, hear this.
- 30:52Dr.
- 30:52Mark Hyman is a functional medicine practitioner, and he has said,"Take care of the body you have.
- 30:59It's the only place you have to live." Hmm.
- 31:02Well, there it is.
- 31:04Mm-hmm.
- 31:05There it is.
- 31:07Well, if that's not food for thought, pardon the pun right?
- 31:12Exactly.
- 31:13Yeah.
- 31:13It ju- it makes you stop and pause- Yeah But- Absolutely but yeah.
- 31:17Thank you for that.
- 31:18That's brilliant.
- 31:18You're welcome.
- 31:19Thank you so much for sharing your time, expertise, brilliance with us today.
- 31:24I know our community will be forever more richer from the conversation we've had today.
- 31:30So thank you for joining us and sharing so much wisdom.
- 31:34And before we close, I do want to share something that's gentle and very clear to me, that I will be hosting a live in-person two-day experience called Ignite the Inner Uprising.
- 31:47It'll be an immersive gathering for women in midlife years who feel the quiet pull to something more truthful, more embodied, more fully themselves.
- 31:56It's an extension of the conversations we have on Thrive After 45, where reflection becomes embodiment and insight becomes integrated.
- 32:05Women who have held so much for others are going to gather to stand fully in their own sovereignty.
- 32:12So if something in today's conversation has stirred in your body or you started leaning in or putting your hand up, that is not accidental.
- 32:20The wait list is open, so if Ignite feels like something your future self will thank you for, I invite you to add your name.
- 32:27The link for that will be in the show notes.
- 32:29And as always, make sure you follow, like, share, leave us a review so more women can find these incredible conversations.
- 32:39And may you all thrive after 45 for you, by you, because of you.
- 32:46Have a wonderful day.
- 32:48Bye everyone.
- 32:50Hello, and welcome to today's episode of Thrive After 45.
- 32:55I'm Denise Drinkwalter, midlife mirror and mentor, and every week I am honored to share energy and space with inspiring guests whose stories reflect so many possibilities of thriving beyond 45.
- 33:11Together, we uncover the whispers of the heart, the power of midlife transformation, and the wisdom that fuels expansion because when one woman turns her light on, the rest of the room catches fire What if your body isn't broken, it's just asking the wrong questions for years?
- 33:36That's a belief my next guest has built her entire career on.
- 33:40It started decades ago while her...
- 33:43while she was homeschooling her He couldn't focus, he couldn't sit still, and every answer she tried had come up totally empty.
- 33:52And then one day on the radio, she heard a panel of parents describing children with ADHD, and with an incredible jolt, she realized they were describing her own son.
- 34:04And rather than accept a diagnosis and a prescription, she went looking for the root cause.
- 34:11A library book by a pediatric allergist led her to a theory that many cases of ADHD trace back to allergic reactions to artificial colors and flavors in food.
- 34:22She stripped those ingredients from her son's diet, and within two weeks she had a calmer, more focused child, simply by changing what he ate.
- 34:35Well, that discovery launched a 13-year journey into the connection between food, lifestyle, and health.
- 34:45Today, she works as a functional wellness health coach, using functional medicine principles to help clients get to the root of the chronic conditions that conventional medicine often struggles to explain.
- 34:58Things like Type 2 diabetes, IBS, PCOS, autoimmune activations such as Hashimoto's, lupus, rheumatoid arthri- arthritis, and psoriasis.
- 35:10Where traditional medicine tends to overlook the microbiome and the body as a whole, she brings a holistic lens that connects the dots.
- 35:21She also supports cancer patients through treatment, helping them build resilience in the rest of their body while their medical team focuses on eliminating the disease, because without that support, the body can actually become collateral damage in the fight of cancer.
- 35:38So over the past 13 years, she's personally coached and guided several hundred clients and reached hundreds more through her book, Thriving Through Cancer: A Holistic Approach for Your Journey.
- 35:53It is an honor and a privilege to welcome Kelly Lutman to our show today.
- 35:57Thank you for being here.
- 36:00Oh, I'm so excited to have this conversation.
- 36:02We were, I'm gonna start off with a bang because we were talking before the show started, and there is an incredible synchronicity that occurred when I was told about the book, and I'm gonna hold it up for those of you who are on YouTube, Thriving Through Cancer: A Holistic Approach for Your Journey.
- 36:25And that book came actually to my front door, what's today, the 15th?
- 36:32It came five days ago.
- 36:35because I had a friend that I met along my journey of the podcast, and she suggested I, I find this book because we have a recent diagnosis, in our family.
- 36:46My husband has been diagnosed with another cancer.
- 36:49And I was like,"You cancer number two, I think we need to do something, not different, but look at all the pieces of the puzzle here.
- 36:56how can I support him in his journey now and myself?" Well, lo and behold, folks, un- I was told to c- purchase this book by Kelly Lutman, and then it never dawned on me that I had already scheduled to have Kelly on our show because, I get so many guests and we book...
- 37:15How far ahead did we book this?
- 37:17Like- It was months ago.
- 37:18Yeah, yeah.
- 37:18I think we booked in the spring maybe.
- 37:19Yeah.
- 37:20Yeah.
- 37:20Yeah, yeah.
- 37:21So- It was out of both of our minds, but- Right?
- 37:24then, it comes up on the calendar, and amazing to find- Yeah that you find I'm the one you're speaking to- Yes and you just received my book.
- 37:32That's amazing.
- 37:32Like, just so incredible.
- 37:34So it, it's, it's a even a bigger honor than I even imagined, because of the situation.
- 37:40And, not the situation, because of the journey that we are going on- Mm-hmm in the next little while as a family.
- 37:47So I am honored and thrilled to share this space with you, and I can't wait to dig in to learn how important, crucial, lifesaving it is to understand the wholeness of one's self.
- 38:04Yes.
- 38:04So can you give us- Yes yeah, give us an idea of why is it so important for us to understand whole?
- 38:11When you say whole, W-H-O-L-E, what exactly are we referencing here?
- 38:15All of you Which is body, we're familiar with our body, and that's what we think of when we go to see the doctor.
- 38:22Right.
- 38:22But mind plays into it too.
- 38:25Mind-body medicine is becoming much more prolific, and- Yeah sci- scientific studies are coming out all the time talking about how the mind affects what happens in the body, and the body can affect the mind.
- 38:38Mm-hmm.
- 38:38And then there's the spiritual aspect that I- Mm added into the book as well because we need to have hope.
- 38:45We need- Mm to live in gratitude.
- 38:47Yeah.
- 38:47We need to understand and the, the com- the vi- vitality that comes from being loved and- Mm loving others.
- 38:55Mm-hmm.
- 38:55All of those pertain to our spiritual side.
- 38:59Right.
- 38:59But they affect our overall health.
- 39:02And medicine has been developed over the 100 years or so, prob- probably 150 years that medicine has really been becoming more prominent.
- 39:12Right.
- 39:12But it is designed to separate a person into portions.
- 39:17You've got- Okay the orthopedic and you've got the endocrinologist and y- the OBGYN, and all these different specialties.
- 39:25Mm-hmm.
- 39:25But they don't look at the whole person.
- 39:27Mm.
- 39:28They don't look at how it all works together.
- 39:30I find clients come to me, and they've seen- Right a cardiologist, and they've seen the endocrinologist, and they've seen these different ones, and they have- Yeah prescribed different things, but they never looked at how it all comes together.
- 39:43Right.
- 39:43And I pull back, instead of looking- Mm-hmm at the branches of the tree, I want to pull back and look- Mm at the whole tree.
- 39:49Mm-hmm.
- 39:49The whole piece, and what is interacting here and here and here, because- Mm often we have symptoms, which I don't consider symptoms to be something you just shut down with a medication.
- 40:01Mm-hmm.
- 40:01Symptoms are my roadmap.
- 40:03Right.
- 40:04That's guiding me.
- 40:05It's the body's way of messaging, because- Right we don't have an internal text system in our body.
- 40:10Right.
- 40:11Mm-hmm.
- 40:11And we don't have this cursor on our forehead that says- Right"Hello, I need this." the body speaks- Right through symptoms.
- 40:17Okay.
- 40:18And if we spend our time- ignoring, shutting down the symptom.
- 40:22You have a headache, so you grab a pill and a glass of water.
- 40:25Mm-hmm.
- 40:25Sometimes you just needed that glass of water- Mm because you were dehydrated.
- 40:29You didn't really need the pill.
- 40:31Right.
- 40:31And if you lean for those pills too often, even- Mm-hmm the over-the-counter pills, painkillers especially- Right.
- 40:37Yeah have a negative effect in your body- Mm-hmm if you use them repeatedly on a lot of basis.
- 40:42Right.
- 40:43So I look at the body as a whole system.
- 40:46Mm-hmm.
- 40:46And I listen to my clients' observations,'cause they're in the body.
- 40:51Right.
- 40:52I need their observations of what are they experiencing.
- 40:54What's it like when you first wake up in the morning?
- 40:57What do you notice as you progress through the day?
- 41:00How does your body change and its feelings?
- 41:02Mm.
- 41:02Mm-hmm.
- 41:02And those are vital messages for us to use to be able to find the root problem in their body.
- 41:11I don't believe anyone's body is broken.
- 41:13Okay.
- 41:14I was just gonna...
- 41:14Yeah.
- 41:15We're not broken.
- 41:15Yeah.
- 41:15We're just needing a different support.
- 41:18Right.
- 41:19And a lot of the support, we, we look to, okay, n- I need a medication, I need this, I need that.
- 41:24But how many thousands of years did humans live without- Mm our medical system and our medications?
- 41:32And we used food, and we used lifestyle changes in your environment.
- 41:38Right.
- 41:38That was how you supported the body.
- 41:40Right.
- 41:41And our bodies are designed to be out in nature.
- 41:44Yes.
- 41:44But the more, the more urbanized we become- Mm-hmm the less we encounter nature.
- 41:51We need sunlight in our eyes first thing in the morning for our circadian rhythm.
- 41:56Mm-hmm.
- 41:56We need contact with the ground on bare feet- Mm-hmm for, to be, to be able to receive the negative electrons that come up from the ground and balance our bodies out.
- 42:06That can be a great pain reliever.
- 42:08Mm.
- 42:08Go stand in the grass or on the sand.
- 42:11If you want, stand on, stand on dirt.
- 42:14Yeah.
- 42:14Yeah, yeah.
- 42:15Yep.
- 42:15All of that allows your body to send electrons up into your bo- or receive electrons.
- 42:21Mm-hmm.
- 42:22And it can be relaxing and relieve pain.
- 42:26It's amazing.
- 42:27Mm.
- 42:27Wow.
- 42:27It didn't need a pill.
- 42:28Wow.
- 42:30That's incredible.
- 42:31I didn't...
- 42:31I, I've seen, I've seen those, I'm gonna say carpets.
- 42:35They're not carpets, but I've seen those...
- 42:38they've developed- The grounding pads?
- 42:39Yeah, the pads.
- 42:40Oh, uh-huh.
- 42:41Uh-huh, uh-huh.
- 42:41Yeah.
- 42:42Do they- Yeah is that the same concept?
- 42:44I don't know.
- 42:45It's the concept.
- 42:46Yeah.
- 42:46There you go.
- 42:47But I'd rather be grounded with with the real earth- Yeah than through a wire in the socket on the, on the wall.
- 42:52Yep.
- 42:53Nope.
- 42:53I, yep.
- 42:54there are that you need extra, and so- Sure you can use shee- grounding sheets under your bedsheets on the bed.
- 43:01Yep.
- 43:01And there are even shoes that are made that, when we, we'll go around in rubber shoes, rubber does not conduct- Right, yep the, the electrons.
- 43:10And so they make shoes leather-based, leather b- bottom shoes.
- 43:13Okay.
- 43:13Will.
- 43:13Yeah.
- 43:14Yeah.
- 43:14So the more natural it is- Interesting.
- 43:16Yeah the better you can connect with the ground.
- 43:19Mm-hmm.
- 43:19And that is nourishing to our bodies.
- 43:21Love that.
- 43:22Is it your understanding and/or belief and/or both that when we are out of balance in our whole body- Mm-hmm and we don't understand or reach for figuring out what the symptom is telling us, if we just keep ignoring it, does it stay stuck, the energy stay stuck, and can morph into ailments?
- 43:48Mm-hmm.
- 43:48I've heard that.
- 43:49Yeah.
- 43:49I've heard that.
- 43:49Yeah.
- 43:49But I, I don't know.
- 43:51Yeah quiet messages, gentle messages, but if you ignore or you shut it down with medication, then that, that con- that source continues- Yeah to be a problem, and even taking the medication doesn't fix the, the root- Right of the problem.
- 44:06Yes.
- 44:06It's just Band-Aids.
- 44:08I, I tell my clients it's like the brake light comes on your dashboard- Mm but because it's a pain and it's bothering and aggravating you, you reach behind and you cut the wire- Mm that turns off the light, but that doesn't fix the brakes.
- 44:21Right.
- 44:21Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 44:22And you're gonna have a bigger problem later.
- 44:23Right.
- 44:24Yeah.
- 44:25So, so realizing that- Yeah having a headache can be a gift.
- 44:30Mm-hmm.
- 44:30It's your body giving you a relatively gentle way of saying,"I need some support." Mm-hmm.
- 44:35Maybe you need more water.
- 44:36Maybe you need magnesium.
- 44:38Maybe you need to slow down- Mm and give yourself some rest.
- 44:43Mm-hmm.
- 44:43Mm-hmm.
- 44:43Which way too many peop- the- the person that originated sleep is overrated was- Yeah I, I want to meet that person because- I bet you they were not healthy.
- 44:54Yeah.
- 44:55Right?
- 44:55N- nope.
- 44:57Like- Oh.
- 44:57Yeah.
- 44:58Some of the things that people, that or, that's okay, I'll sleep when I'm dead.
- 45:01Yeah.
- 45:01It could come sooner than you expected.
- 45:03Right.
- 45:04Yeah, yeah.
- 45:04Don't, don't- There's a problem with that.
- 45:06Say out loud what you're wishing for, Yeah.
- 45:08By mistake.
- 45:09And I speak to, I speak to- Yeah business owners- Mm-hmm and say, especially if you are a solopreneur, an entrepreneur- Yeah.
- 45:16Yeah your body is one of the most important things to your business.
- 45:21Mm.
- 45:21Because if you push, you, you may have a fabulous service, you may have a fabulous vision for what you're going to do.
- 45:28Mm-hmm.
- 45:28And when you get things started, it takes a lot of work, but if you don't mind the support of your body- Mm-hmm it can shut your business down.
- 45:36Mm.
- 45:37And quickly, right?
- 45:38Yes.
- 45:38Oh, yeah.
- 45:39So be mindful.
- 45:40Yeah.
- 45:40It's important.
- 45:42Yeah, yeah.
- 45:43The power that you have, and, and our whole show is based on what are you going to do for you, by you, because of you?
- 45:50Mm-hmm.
- 45:50So this conversation is so rich because what I'm hearing you say is it's your opportunity, and I'm gonna even push the button even further, it's your responsibility- Yes to ensure that you not only pay attention to your whole self, messages included, but respond to it- Yes in a way that treats you as you are as important as all the family members you try to take care of at all times, right?
- 46:21Exactly.
- 46:22Exactly.
- 46:23Yeah.
- 46:23I, I talk to moms often.
- 46:25Yeah.
- 46:25And I've had...
- 46:26daughters-in-law with my grandkids.
- 46:27Yes.
- 46:28And I say, it's just like when you get on the airplane and they-" Yeah"give you the safety briefing, the air s- air mask-" Oxygen mask"drops down." Yeah.
- 46:34"You put yours on because you can't support these kids if you are run down." Yeah.
- 46:39Yeah.
- 46:40It goes across the board.
- 46:41But, but beyond opportunity or responsibility- Yeah my desire is to empower people.
- 46:47Mm.
- 46:49You have the power to make a difference in your health before you even see the doctor.
- 46:55Right.
- 46:55Yes.
- 46:56And it's through the power of food.
- 46:58Mm-hmm.
- 46:58Maybe you're feeding your body stuff that's not nourishing it- Mm-hmm or that your body is reacting to and you don't realize- Mm.
- 47:06Mm-hmm the reaction messages you're getting.
- 47:08Mm-hmm.
- 47:09Maybe your body needs a different support, a different supply of food.
- 47:13Yeah.
- 47:14Yeah.
- 47:14And then the, the lifestyle things, the food, the, not only the food, but, but movement.
- 47:20Yes.
- 47:20How many of us sit at a desk- Yeah hours in the day and don't- Right move our bodies?
- 47:25Mm-hmm.
- 47:25movement, outdoor time, sleep, nourishment, Yes.
- 47:29Laughter.
- 47:30Yeah.
- 47:30Yeah.
- 47:31So, so important.
- 47:32Yeah.
- 47:32But then relationships.
- 47:34Mm.
- 47:35It's something that a lot of coach- Oh, froze But there are those outliers who maybe feel like,"I'm happier without people." Yeah.
- 47:47Yeah.
- 47:47But most of us need connection with people.
- 47:50Right.
- 47:50We need that interaction.
- 47:52Yeah.
- 47:52We need relationships.
- 47:54That's a part of our healthy- Yeah empowerment as well.
- 47:57Right.
- 47:57So I want to empower people with these are some of the basic things you can do- Yeah to support you.
- 48:04Mm-hmm.
- 48:05So that you can do for others.
- 48:07Yeah.
- 48:07Because if you don't fill your jug, fill your pitcher, you can't pour out to others.
- 48:12Yeah.
- 48:12Yeah.
- 48:13And we conceptually understand that, where- Mm-hmm I find women in particular have the biggest struggle, is putting that into practice.
- 48:22Yes.
- 48:22Yeah.
- 48:22And how do we help change that so it doesn't become other than...
- 48:27Like, the oxygen mask is brilliant because they always show it, and it's true.
- 48:32If you can't breathe, you can't help the kid beside you.
- 48:35You can't help your husband.
- 48:36Yeah.
- 48:36If you're not breathing, you're- And you don't have to be on an airplane.
- 48:39Yeah, it's like- It doesn't have to be only on an airplane.
- 48:40It's- Yeah all life every day.
- 48:42Right?
- 48:42Yeah.
- 48:43So yeah.
- 48:43Yeah.
- 48:45It's...
- 48:46You take steps.
- 48:47Yeah.
- 48:48So, first steps.
- 48:49I- and I always am looking at, at analyzing, w- what, where are we now?
- 48:54What are your greatest concerns?
- 48:56Yes.
- 48:56But one of the things I start with is hydration.
- 48:58Yeah.
- 48:59Because most people are not hydrated.
- 49:02They drink a lot of liquids, but they're liquids that don't hydrate, if they've got a lot of added ingredients, if they've got sugar in them, sugar dehydrates.
- 49:10Mm-hmm.
- 49:11So if your drink is super sweet and tasty- Yeah it's not helping your body.
- 49:16Mm-hmm.
- 49:16You need water.
- 49:17In fact, I encourage my clients, start with a full glass of water that you drink before you even get your coffee in the morning.
- 49:23Yeah.
- 49:24Yeah.
- 49:24Then, sca- stage it.
- 49:26You, another glass of water before lunch, another- Mm-hmm in the afternoon.
- 49:30Mm-hmm.
- 49:31several in the afternoon.
- 49:32Don't chug all your water for the day in the evening because you won't sleep real well.
- 49:37Right.
- 49:37Exactly.
- 49:38Yeah.
- 49:39And sometimes it's okay, let's get a pitcher and fill the pitcher of water and leave it on the counter.
- 49:43It's...
- 49:43Yeah, it's- And that's your reminder, w- how am I doing on my water intake?
- 49:47What do I need extra?
- 49:48Mm-hmm.
- 49:48And some are like,"All I drink is coffee and sodas." Okay.
- 49:52Mm-hmm.
- 49:52Let's trade one.
- 49:53Mm.
- 49:54Yeah.
- 49:54One cup of coffee for water.
- 49:57Yeah.
- 49:57Yeah.
- 49:57Get comfortable with that.
- 49:58Yeah.
- 49:58Then we'll trade another one.
- 49:59Yeah.
- 50:00And so we can slowly crowd out what's working against you- Mm-hmm so that it's not a overwhelming change.
- 50:07Right.
- 50:08Yeah.
- 50:08There's different ways to bring it in.
- 50:10And then switching what you're eating in your food.
- 50:13How much fiber are you getting in your food- Mm.
- 50:16Mm-hmm that feeds the microbiome that is symbiotic with us?
- 50:19us and vital for our health.
- 50:21Mm-hmm.
- 50:22And so, I'm sorry, but french fries are not vegetables- in, in a full allowance, Mm-hmm.
- 50:28Yeah.
- 50:28We need a variety of different types of vegetables because each has different kinds of fiber that feeds different species in our gut.
- 50:35Right.
- 50:35So being mindful of you're not just eating for you, Mm-hmm.
- 50:39It's not just when you're pregnant that you're eating for two.
- 50:41Right.
- 50:41Yeah.
- 50:42But you are also eating to feed and support the microbiome that then supports you with supporting your immune system, giving- Yeah the microbiome, when it eats what we can't digest, it puts out vitamins and things that our bodies need.
- 50:59Okay.
- 50:59And so it's, it's very much a symbiotic relationship.
- 51:02Who knew when we saw- Right all the science fiction shows about something living inside- that we really have it.
- 51:09Right.
- 51:10Although, I don't think it comes out as a head out of the belly button.
- 51:12No.
- 51:12But Thankfully, it does not.
- 51:14They did take it a little further.
- 51:16Thankfully not.
- 51:17wonderful information.
- 51:19I, one thing that I remember, and I don't remember where it's from, but I remembered it, when we shop for groceries- Mm-hmm the outside, and is this is still true?
- 51:32You're nodding yes- Yes for those who aren't seeing- Mm-hmm YouTube version of this.
- 51:34But the outside, around the outside edges are the most non-processed food.
- 51:39Yes.
- 51:39So when you get your vegetables...
- 51:41Yeah, go ahead.
- 51:41It's perishable food.
- 51:42Okay.
- 51:42The perishable food.
- 51:43Okay.
- 51:44I, I joke with my clients, I say,"If a, if any self-respecting bacteria won't eat it, you shouldn't either." Because the food that you find on the shelves has been processed so that- Yeah it can stay on the shelves- Stay and look the same for months.
- 51:58Yeah, yeah.
- 51:58Good point.
- 51:59And it's basically dead.
- 52:00It's lost most of its nutrients.
- 52:02Mm-hmm and they may say,"Oh, we fortified.
- 52:04We took stuff out, but we put stuff back in." But what they put in is synthetic, that your body- Right doesn't register, your...
- 52:10does- doesn't absorb and use.
- 52:12Right.
- 52:12And so, looking at the produce section, looking at the dairy section- Yeah looking meat section, all of those are very valuable.
- 52:20Yeah.
- 52:21and as little processed, as little packaged.
- 52:24Right.
- 52:24Minimal ingredients.
- 52:26Yeah, yeah.
- 52:26If you look, my boys- Mm-hmm used to just go,"Oh, Mom," because I wouldn't look at just the front of the package, I'd turn it around to see the ingredients.
- 52:35Yeah.
- 52:35And,"Don't look at that, Mom.
- 52:36Don't look at that." Because they know I'm gonna say,"Okay, I can't pronounce half of these ingredients." Yeah, yeah.
- 52:41Which means they're chemicals, and I don't want to put that in my body.
- 52:44Mm-hmm.
- 52:44And so they're like- Mm-hmm"Okay, we can't have that," Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 52:48Yeah, I remember, but it's a, it's a juggle because we've...
- 52:53our food is engineered- Yes, yeah to be addictive.
- 52:57Yeah.
- 52:58Mm-hmm.
- 52:58I hate to say it that way, but literally there are f- food engineers that engineer flavoring to be- Mm-hmm addictive, to make you want to eat more.
- 53:07Pringles, when Pringles chips came out, one,"Once you pop, you can't stop." That was a red flag for me.
- 53:15Yeah.
- 53:15Because that just told me they- Sure fixed it that way.
- 53:18Yeah.
- 53:19And I'm not even gonna pop then.
- 53:21Mm-hmm.
- 53:22Yeah.
- 53:22Because I know it's designed- Sure to draw my body in to want more, and that's not gonna nourish.
- 53:28It'll fill my stomach.
- 53:29It'll taste great.
- 53:29Right.
- 53:30Yeah.
- 53:30But it doesn't feed my body.
- 53:33Yeah, yeah.
- 53:33And that's important.
- 53:34It is important, and it's important for so many reasons that we've already started talking about in terms of our, our health and our response- Mm-hmm to the ailments that we can experience, whether they're momentarily small, like a headache here- Sure.
- 53:49Mm-hmm and there, or something more, yeah, life-altering, let's say.
- 53:53Significant diagnosis.
- 53:54Right.
- 53:54Yeah.
- 53:54Yeah, yeah.
- 53:54Exactly.
- 53:55Exactly.
- 53:56Um, so I hear people talking about treating your body like a temple.
- 54:01and, I'm hearing from you is the body is one piece.
- 54:06We've the soul, the mind, and the heart.
- 54:09Mm-hmm.
- 54:09Right, all talking- Mm-hmm wholeness, so I appreciate the depth and width of which you share.
- 54:15And I'm not half done the book.
- 54:17I'm about a third way through, but- Mm-hmm um, I'm getting into those next pieces, and that's the work- Yes that I love to do, is how are you emotions?
- 54:25Where are you sitting?
- 54:26Right.
- 54:26What's real?
- 54:27What's not real?
- 54:28Let's pull it apart and understand it in a deeper way, right?
- 54:32Exactly.
- 54:33Yeah.
- 54:33And that- Yeah what your body is thinking is your bo- the rest of your body is hearing.
- 54:39Right.
- 54:39So- Right being aware, medicine has made, made fun of placebo effect for years.
- 54:46Mm-hmm.
- 54:47generations, Mm-hmm.
- 54:48And it, it's always looked at in medicine as a negative thing.
- 54:51Right.
- 54:51But now studies are showing it's real.
- 54:54If someone takes a pill that could be just basic sugar, but they are convinced in their head that it's going to make a difference for their health, their body picks up on that and does it.
- 55:04So instead of poo-pooing the p- Yeah placebo effect, why not put it into action?
- 55:11Yeah, yeah.
- 55:11Why not take advantage of if I can feed my mind- Yeah with the positive and the direction that I want to go and believe that, even saying the blessing over my meal, thank you for all this amazing nourishment that's gonna come into my body- Mm-hmm and support me in its function.
- 55:29Mm-hmm, yeah.
- 55:29That opens things up for all the possibilities.
- 55:34Yeah, yeah.
- 55:35It's crazy.
- 55:36Yeah.
- 55:36Because your brain- do- it doesn't have the capacity to see if what you're saying is true or not.
- 55:42Exactly.
- 55:42Anything you say is truth.
- 55:44It's all it knows, right?
- 55:45Like,'cause that's what it does.
- 55:47That's how it works.
- 55:48So it's- And it's what you repeat, repeat- Oh, yeah over and over and over again.
- 55:52It's, it picks up on those things.
- 55:54Oh, yeah.
- 55:54And so you just have to- Yeah reframe the way- Yeah you're talking and thinking.
- 55:59Yeah.
- 55:59Yeah.
- 56:00Yeah.
- 56:01And we're talking about it as though everything makes so much sense.
- 56:07Is it harder to do than not?
- 56:11What is, what has been your experience when you work with your clients?
- 56:13Is it harder to actually action?
- 56:16Does...
- 56:17Do you find your clients who are in a more challenging diagnosis, let's say- Mm-hmm have more long-term conviction?
- 56:26Or is there, is there no correlation there?
- 56:29Partly it depends on their why for coming to me.
- 56:32Perfect.
- 56:33Yeah.
- 56:33Often, often they hear about me, and they come, they, reach out and we have our initial call- Yeah because they've been to numerous practitioners.
- 56:43They don't feel like they've been heard.
- 56:45Yes.
- 56:46They don't feel like anyone really wants to understand what they're dealing with.
- 56:51Mm-hmm.
- 56:51Or they're asking for why, they're asking for answers, and they don't receive answers.
- 56:57Right.
- 56:57Because when it's a chronic disease that is multi-system in the body- Sure medicine doesn't really know how to handle those very well.
- 57:06Mm.
- 57:07Mm-hmm.
- 57:07Mm-hmm.
- 57:07But that's where I take the time to listen, and I draw- Mm asking the questions and drawing things out.
- 57:13Yeah.
- 57:13And then evaluating where do we start, what are the first steps?
- 57:17And honestly, one of the things I'm looking for- Mm-hmm is what is something that we can get some quick relief?
- 57:23Mm.
- 57:24Mm-hmm.
- 57:24the low-hanging fruit they talk about.
- 57:26Mm-hmm.
- 57:26Mm-hmm.
- 57:26What is something that can maybe give them some quick relief so they can see, aha- Right something can make be- get better.
- 57:33Sure.
- 57:34Then that re- sets them for pushing into the deeper stuff- Yeah that we need to work on.
- 57:39Yeah.
- 57:39And it's always in the concept, context of- What are your goals?
- 57:45Yeah.
- 57:45And what is your body asking for most?
- 57:47Mm.
- 57:48And how can we strategize your application of this?
- 57:51Nice.
- 57:51Because it's, we go to doctors, the doctor says,"Do this and do this," and you walk out of there going,"How?" Oh, yeah.
- 57:57"I don't know how." Right.
- 57:59But- Yeah but when you've got someone there who already understands a little bit of your life- Yeah and is, is asking the questions,"What about this?
- 58:07How would this work?" Right.
- 58:09And giving some ideas to support how you can incorporate it- Mm-hmm so that it's- Mm-hmm not such a, a drastic- Yeah change.
- 58:18Yeah, yeah.
- 58:19That, that can make it easier.
- 58:21Absolutely.
- 58:21But sometimes it's just a long road, and we have- Yeah, yeah to peel the onion little by little- Right and work on things as we go.
- 58:27Yeah.
- 58:27But most of the time they're finding, uh, they're finding changes in just a few weeks.
- 58:35Yeah.
- 58:35And amazed it, how they can feel, Yeah.
- 58:38It's like that's the goal because the body- Yeah, exactly can be resilient.
- 58:41Yeah.
- 58:41The body is resilient when it's provided what it needs.
- 58:45Right, yeah, when it has the foundation to be able to.
- 58:48Mm-hmm.
- 58:48Yeah, yeah.
- 58:49Mm-hmm.
- 58:49Yeah.
- 58:49Exactly.
- 58:50Love that.
- 58:50Love that.
- 58:51Is there, what's the primary way that you view supporting health differently than medical practitioners do?
- 58:58You've alluded to it, but is primary.
- 59:00I think we've, yeah, we've alluded to it.
- 59:01Mm-hmm.
- 59:01But to, to make it more specific- Yeah when you go to the doctor they ask you about your symptoms, and they- Yeah prescribe medication that shuts down the symptom.
- 59:09Mm-hmm.
- 59:10I ask about symptoms, but I view those symptoms as the body's messages.
- 59:14Yeah.
- 59:14And I cherish your- Mm e- I really value your observations of what you're feeling in your body because that's our roadmap.
- 59:23That's how it goes.
- 59:24Yeah.
- 59:24And so I'm- Yeah listening to the symptoms, listening and explaining what's going on.
- 59:29Right.
- 59:30Also, just educating, this is what is likely happening.
- 59:33Yeah.
- 59:34And it's because it's tied in in this way.
- 59:36Right.
- 59:37So that when we plan or strategize a change, you understand why behind it.
- 59:43Mm-hmm.
- 59:44Mm-hmm.
- 59:44If you're just told,"Do this," but you- Yep don't understand the purpose- Yeah behind it, it makes it difficult.
- 59:50Mm-hmm.
- 59:50But I try to do the education along the process so that they're understanding why we're doing this and what- Yep what their body is asking for- Love that in the process.
- 59:58Love that.
- 59:59So bit, bit of a difference.
- 1:00:01Yeah, big bit of a difference.
- 1:00:03Yeah.
- 1:00:03And we are so grateful that you have- Found your path, and the way that you found it is incredible, but not surprising based on what I know of you and your book that I've been reading, and- Mm-hmm the accolades that are, that are in the front of the book.
- 1:00:20I think, what, what did you call it?
- 1:00:22Let me re- like, I was like,"What did she call that?" Um, advanced praise for the book, and there's gotta be, what, 20, that have written snippets about what the power of the book, and the power of Kelly's knowledge and experience, um, and doing of- Yeah help, wanting to help people live their lives right?
- 1:00:43Yes.
- 1:00:44Yeah.
- 1:00:44And I discovered this whole career, this whole path- Yeah long after I was Yes, of course you did, because that's when you were ready for it, right?
- 1:00:53Yes.
- 1:00:54Yeah.
- 1:00:54It, it, the, the seeds were planted with my son.
- 1:00:57Yeah.
- 1:00:57But I finished homeschooling all three of my sons before I started back to school- Mm to learn and train in this.
- 1:01:03Yeah.
- 1:01:04And my husband gra- uh, my husband retired a year and a half ago, but I said- Yeah"I'm not ready to retire." I'm not doing that.
- 1:01:10I, I've got too much to do still.
- 1:01:12Well, and it's your form of retirement, because if you love it, is it really- Yes a job, really at the end- No of the day?
- 1:01:19We know it's not.
- 1:01:19No, it's- It's...
- 1:01:20Yeah it's a passion, and- Yeah if, if what I share, w- whether it's on, on, on social media or my blogs- Yeah or my book or whatever, if it makes- Yeah a difference for someone else- Yeah then I've won.
- 1:01:32That's awesome.
- 1:01:33I love that.
- 1:01:33That's exactly- Yeah what I want.
- 1:01:35Love it.
- 1:01:35I love it.
- 1:01:37Um, has there, uh, been any conversation where bringing, your full approach with the medical field in a way that when a person goes into an office, they get a support, and you would be on that team?
- 1:01:52Has that ever been- I haven't really teamed up with- particular practitioners, no.
- 1:01:58But I tell my clients,"I am not your practitioner.
- 1:02:01I'm not your doctor." Right.
- 1:02:02"I'm not licensed that way." No.
- 1:02:04Yeah, yeah.
- 1:02:04They need...
- 1:02:04In fact, in my client agreement, they have to agree- Yeah that they still have a practitioner on the, on site.
- 1:02:10Absolutely.
- 1:02:11Yeah.
- 1:02:11But I join the team.
- 1:02:12Okay, you do.
- 1:02:13Yeah.
- 1:02:13I join the team.
- 1:02:14Perfect.
- 1:02:14And so I, and, and often I will, if the practitioner is open to it, I will- Yeah communicate and- Yeah send them emails and advise them on what we have done- Right and what the purpose is.
- 1:02:26There are times that I'm asking through the client- Yes"Could we do these testing, this testing?" Right.
- 1:02:31"Is it possible?" And I will explain the why.
- 1:02:33Sure.
- 1:02:33so as much as possible, I try to work- Yeah alongside.
- 1:02:37Perfect.
- 1:02:37But rarely do the do the practitioners have more than seven to 10 minutes with the client.
- 1:02:42Of course.
- 1:02:43Um, yeah.
- 1:02:43And I spend over an hour- Yeah each session with them.
- 1:02:46So- Of course it's a little difference in the communication side.
- 1:02:49Yeah, of course.
- 1:02:50Yeah, understandable.
- 1:02:51But I do like the idea of the team piece.
- 1:02:54Yes, yes.
- 1:02:54And I'm sure it's individualized, and I'm sure other, everybody has their, reasons, whether it's the client, whether it's the doctor, whatever.
- 1:03:02Mm-hmm.
- 1:03:02I'm just glad that you're doing the work that you're doing in such an extensive way.
- 1:03:06And we will have in the show notes all the ways to get ahold of Kelly so that if- Awesome this is resonating, which I'm sure everybody in, in the listening audience are raising their hand going,"How...
- 1:03:16Get the number out, Denise.
- 1:03:17Get the number out." Give her a call.
- 1:03:20It's not ma- probably a call, but an, an email or whatever, right?
- 1:03:23So yeah, yeah.
- 1:03:24Perfect.
- 1:03:24That's awesome.
- 1:03:25I would, I would welcome a conversation with someone.
- 1:03:28Thank you, Kelly.
- 1:03:29Is there anything you would love to make sure our listeners hear before we wrap up this incredible conversation today?
- 1:03:36Anything, golden nuggets you want everybody to hear?
- 1:03:40If they've heard nothing else, hear this.
- 1:03:43Dr.
- 1:03:43Mark Hyman is a functional medicine practitioner, and he has said,"Take care of the body you have.
- 1:03:50It's the only place you have to live." Hmm.
- 1:03:53Well, there it is.
- 1:03:55Mm-hmm.
- 1:03:56There it is.
- 1:03:58Well, if that's not food for thought, pardon the pun right?
- 1:04:03Exactly.
- 1:04:03Yeah.
- 1:04:04It ju- it makes you stop and pause- Yeah But- Absolutely but yeah.
- 1:04:07Thank you for that.
- 1:04:09That's brilliant.
- 1:04:09You're welcome.
- 1:04:10Thank you so much for sharing your time, expertise, brilliance with us today.
- 1:04:15I know our community will be forever more richer from the conversation we've had today.
- 1:04:21So thank you for joining us and sharing so much wisdom.
- 1:04:25And before we close, I do want to share something that's gentle and very clear to me, that I will be hosting a live in-person two-day experience called Ignite the Inner Uprising.
- 1:04:37It'll be an immersive gathering for women in midlife years who feel the quiet pull to something more truthful, more embodied, more fully themselves.
- 1:04:47It's an extension of the conversations we have on Thrive After 45, where reflection becomes embodiment and insight becomes integrated.
- 1:04:56Women who have held so much for others are going to gather to stand fully in their own sovereignty.
- 1:05:03So if something in today's conversation has stirred in your body or you started leaning in or putting your hand up, that is not accidental.
- 1:05:10The wait list is open, so if Ignite feels like something your future self will thank you for, I invite you to add your name.
- 1:05:18The link for that will be in the show notes, and as always, make sure you follow, like, share, leave us a review so more women can find these incredible conversations.
- 1:05:30And may you all thrive after 45 for you, by you, because of you.
- 1:05:37Have a wonderful day.
- 1:05:39Bye, everyone.
