- 0:00SPEAKER_01: What if becoming healthier wasn't just about looking better or feeling better or living longer?
- 0:05SPEAKER_01: But what if it was actually about becoming more capable of giving yourself completely to God and to those who you love?
- 0:14SPEAKER_01: I know so many of us we really want to grow in holiness, but our days feel so scattered and so busy that it is so hard.
- 0:22SPEAKER_01: We're constantly tired, we're distracted, we can be inconsistent, we can be grouchy at times, right?
- 0:29SPEAKER_01: But I think that we're always trying to constantly fit all these things together prayer and work and family life and even working out.
- 0:37SPEAKER_01: But when we're trying to do that in a life that already feels so full, it really, really just can make the load seem even heavier.
- 0:46SPEAKER_01: But today, my guest believes that we don't have to have those things compete with each other.
- 0:52SPEAKER_01: Chase Krauss, he's the founder of HyperoFit, which combines Catholic theology with fitness, nutrition, the church's tradition of self-mastery.
- 1:02SPEAKER_01: And he helps people become stronger, not only in body, but with soul as well.
- 1:07SPEAKER_01: And actually, not for themselves, but so that they can be a gift of themselves to God and to other people.
- 1:15SPEAKER_01: And that's at the heart of his new book, which is called Sanctify Your Day, a structured way to live an intentional and healthy and holy life.
- 1:24SPEAKER_01: We've had Chase on Purposely Catholic for his last book, God of Endurance.
- 1:29SPEAKER_01: And this book is just as as good if not better, right?
- 1:32SPEAKER_01: But we talk about how do we take these ordinary things that we're already doing, like sleeping and eating and working out and our work and rest, how do we take them into a rhythm that actually leads us towards God?
- 1:46SPEAKER_01: How do we sanctify those things?
- 1:48SPEAKER_01: Sanctify just means how do we make those holy?
- 1:52SPEAKER_01: How do we dedicate those to God?
- 1:54SPEAKER_01: Well, that's what we're gonna be getting into today.
- 1:57SPEAKER_01: But before we do, I like you to hit that subscribe button.
- 2:00SPEAKER_01: It really helps us or share this video with somebody who has uh an interest in Catholicism, but how we can make it even better when we put Christ at the center.
- 2:10SPEAKER_01: So, with no further ado, get ready.
- 2:12SPEAKER_01: Here we go.
- 2:22SPEAKER_01: All right, welcome to another episode of the Catholic Couple.
- 2:25SPEAKER_01: I am joined with Chase Krause, who's got an unbelievably good book called Sanctify Your Day.
- 2:31SPEAKER_01: We're gonna unpack this.
- 2:32SPEAKER_01: And Khalil and I actually have a little blurb and endorsement in it, so that was nice to get the opportunity to endorse this book because it is so important for our day.
- 2:42SPEAKER_01: So, first and foremost, Chase, thank you so much for taking the time.
- 2:45SPEAKER_02: Yeah, Bobby, thanks for having me.
- 2:46SPEAKER_02: I'm excited to be back on.
- 2:48SPEAKER_01: Yeah, right.
- 2:48SPEAKER_01: And this is your second book.
- 2:50SPEAKER_01: Your first book was God of Endurance, which which is you know, a lot of similar themes with Dan Burke.
- 2:55SPEAKER_01: But this, what prompted you to write this second book?
- 2:58SPEAKER_01: Now you got two books.
- 2:59SPEAKER_01: It's like, okay, one wasn't enough.
- 3:00SPEAKER_01: I know it's hard, uh, just finishing mine.
- 3:03SPEAKER_01: Uh so why that this second book in in particular?
- 3:06SPEAKER_02: Yeah, so it was during the PR run of the God of Endurance last year.
- 3:10SPEAKER_02: So my first book, God of Endurance, is more of the general introduction of like why Catholics should work out and some practicals as well.
- 3:17SPEAKER_02: Like we wanted it to be a little bit practical near the end.
- 3:20SPEAKER_02: But um, during some of my conversations, even with like talking about the book, you know, people were coming up to me and my clients, whatever, and being like, Yeah, but like what does a day actually look like?
- 3:29SPEAKER_02: Like, what is this, like, what does this mean?
- 3:31SPEAKER_02: Like, how do we get all of this in?
- 3:33SPEAKER_02: Because we talk about a lot of different things that you should be doing, right?
- 3:36SPEAKER_02: And God of Endurance or whatever, but we don't really address the practicalities of like how do you actually get it done, right?
- 3:42SPEAKER_02: So I was like, okay, if the first book was like big picture, this is why I believe Catholics should exercise, eat well, some practicals.
- 3:50SPEAKER_02: I wanted to zoom in and say, okay, like let's actually look at these things, and also to understand that what we do as Catholics, work, recreation, family, exercise, they're not separate or they're not things that get in the way of our holiness.
- 4:12SPEAKER_02: They're they're usually the means to it, right?
- 4:15SPEAKER_02: So so many times and talking to a client or whoever, and you know, being like, oh, Chase, like, you know, I was gonna work out, but then my my daughter got sick, and oh my gosh, it's just blah blah blah.
- 4:25SPEAKER_02: I'm like, well, your daughter getting sick is is the reason you work out.
- 4:29SPEAKER_02: It's not doesn't get in the way of you working out, like that's that's why we work out.
- 4:33SPEAKER_02: And so when those moments in life come, we're equipped to address them, right?
- 4:36SPEAKER_02: Address them well.
- 4:37SPEAKER_02: So I really want to just dive into the minutia of like, let's look at a normal day.
- 4:42SPEAKER_02: What might it look like to live this calling that I believe John Paul II asked of us to sanctify our day, sanctify our life from the time we wake up to the time you go to bed.
- 4:52SPEAKER_02: And one of the kind of the unwritten themes of the book is the fact that if you get through the book, you'll realize I don't really have a lot of time for like Netflix or social media or like all these other things.
- 5:05SPEAKER_02: And yeah, because that's not those are bad and of themselves, uh, most of the time, but if our goal is to live intentionally, like you don't uh St.
- 5:13SPEAKER_02: Jose Marie Scrives Scriva says we don't become saints on accident, right?
- 5:17SPEAKER_02: It takes intention.
- 5:18SPEAKER_02: So that's that's I really wanted to drill into that.
- 5:20SPEAKER_01: I'm very partial to that idea.
- 5:22SPEAKER_01: That's why we named our our other channel Purposely Catholic, because we have to do it on purpose.
- 5:27SPEAKER_01: Like you can't accidentally go to heaven, you can't accidentally become a saint.
- 5:31SPEAKER_01: You have to live with purpose and with intention.
- 5:34SPEAKER_01: And it starts with sanctifying your day, the very first moment from when you wake up.
- 5:40SPEAKER_01: That is an opportunity to not do something, you don't have to go on the street and preach like St.
- 5:44SPEAKER_01: Paul or do anything like that, but you can start your day by sanctifying it, by offering it up to God, starting, you know, some practical advice that you give, you know, like the morning offering, or you know, even I do like my own, you know, I'll I'll do the the the church's morning offering, but then I'll do a little bit more personal one, like I I give you this, Lord, or I give you that.
- 6:01SPEAKER_01: It's just having that intention of this day is a gift, and therefore I need to thank the person that gave it to me, the gift.
- 6:09SPEAKER_01: That's God, we believe, you know, and so it's like one of those things where it doesn't have to be superhero type like virtue.
- 6:17SPEAKER_01: Like a lot of the things that, like you said, we are already doing.
- 6:20SPEAKER_01: How do we sanctify those things?
- 6:21SPEAKER_01: And then how do we turn those things into a prayer?
- 6:24SPEAKER_01: Whether that's you know the St.
- 6:26SPEAKER_01: Benedict way of you know making prayer and work together, but there's so many things to do there, and you have uh a bunch of different chapters.
- 6:33SPEAKER_01: I want to get into a little bit about it, where you have practically, like you said, all these different things.
- 6:38SPEAKER_01: The first one being um obviously the the steps towards sanctity and getting into the over, you know, the big themes of it, but you talk about sleep, the morning, which I just mentioned, your body, appetites, work, specific moments, and evenings.
- 6:54SPEAKER_01: So you do a good job of breaking that down because this is how we live our lives, right?
- 6:58SPEAKER_01: And in morning, afternoon, lunch, or you know, and more generally, like working out and things like that.
- 7:04SPEAKER_01: So, how did you pick which ones were important to write chapters on?
- 7:08SPEAKER_01: And um how how should people, when they pick up this book, how should they approach it?
- 7:13SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I uh one of my favorite quotes that I included in the very first uh introduction, and I have it here, I'll read it.
- 7:20SPEAKER_02: It's from St.
- 7:21SPEAKER_02: Alphonsus Rodriguez, not Lagor, the Rodriguez, different guy.
- 7:24SPEAKER_02: He says, consider only the present day.
- 7:27SPEAKER_02: One of the arts which the devil employs to ruin souls and to retard many in the service of God is to represent to them that it is a very difficult and insupportable thing to live for many years with so much exactness, circumspection, and regularity.
- 7:42SPEAKER_02: Now, to consider today only closes the path to this temptation, and at the same time lends much support to human weakness.
- 7:49SPEAKER_02: For who is there that cannot for one day make a strong effort to do all he can that his actions may be well performed?
- 7:56SPEAKER_02: And the reason that's the first, like literally the first quote of the book is is because it can be overwhelming to think about uh working out a certain way, eating a certain way, praying a certain way, or you know, living as intentionality for the rest of your life.
- 8:12SPEAKER_02: It can be kind of overwhelming.
- 8:13SPEAKER_02: Like, how am I gonna do this every day, especially when you're just into it, right?
- 8:17SPEAKER_02: If it's been the first workout in a long time, or if you're really used to eating certain certain kind of foods and it's the first day or two that you're not eating it, it's just you're in the trenches and then you're gonna say, oh my gosh.
- 8:27SPEAKER_02: And so my encouragement to people is like, when you read the book, don't think you have to do everything I talk about like at just instantly, right?
- 8:36SPEAKER_02: Uh a spiritual director of mine once told me, um, you know, he looks at me, he's like, you know, Chase, knowledge doesn't make you a saint.
- 8:42SPEAKER_02: You know that, right?
- 8:42SPEAKER_02: And I'm like, what do you mean?
- 8:44SPEAKER_02: I read a lot of books, father.
- 8:46SPEAKER_02: Um, it's it's no, it's like love does.
- 8:48SPEAKER_02: And and and so, and and love that inspires virtuous living.
- 8:52SPEAKER_02: And so understanding that um you just take this one thing at a time, right?
- 8:56SPEAKER_02: So maybe the thing you want to focus on first is your sleep routine and getting enough sleep because maybe you're staying up too late or whatever.
- 9:02SPEAKER_02: Cool, like just like don't even worry about the exercise part yet.
- 9:04SPEAKER_02: Just get your sleep down, right?
- 9:06SPEAKER_02: Um, because that's all you have the bandwidth for to think about.
- 9:08SPEAKER_02: Great, awesome.
- 9:09SPEAKER_02: If your sleep's okay, but you're not really working out, cool, think about that.
- 9:11SPEAKER_02: You know, I would I would probably argue that um if somebody isn't practicing personal prayer of some kind, that's probably where I would encourage most people to start.
- 9:20SPEAKER_02: It's not the first chapter of the book.
- 9:21SPEAKER_02: Well, it's pseudo the first chapter of the book with the sanctification part uh and the asceticism, but um because it it's we can't do this on our own.
- 9:29SPEAKER_02: Like you just can't, like, you know, there's some kind of uh neo um uh stoicism kind of going around in Instagram these days, even in the Catholic world, you know, it's just like oh be a man, be virtuous, blah, blah, blah.
- 9:43SPEAKER_02: It's like, but what's the point?
- 9:45SPEAKER_02: Like just to be the best version of yourself.
- 9:48SPEAKER_02: Yeah, like you can be the best version of yourself, you're always the best and the worst, right?
- 9:51SPEAKER_02: Like, yeah, you know, it's like, no, we have we have somebody to imitate Jesus Christ, right?
- 9:55SPEAKER_02: But if you don't you don't know them, who are you imitating?
- 9:58SPEAKER_02: You know, yeah.
- 9:59SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I I I read the stoics too, like we can take from them and uh apply them, but like Christianity is like the ultimate stoicism, right?
- 10:08SPEAKER_01: It's like yeah, you know, the the obstacle is the way.
- 10:11SPEAKER_01: I love that book by Ryan Holliday.
- 10:12SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 10:13SPEAKER_01: But like for us, it's like, yeah, it's like Jesus tells us, deny yourself and pick up your cross.
- 10:18SPEAKER_01: So we're doing it different reasons.
- 10:20SPEAKER_01: Like we have a goal and an end in mind that why we're doing it and to to suffer well, it's different than just suffering for the sake of suffering, yeah, for my own vanity or my own personal projects, versus how you you talk about working out, like that could become a prayer.
- 10:35SPEAKER_01: To sanctify means to make holy.
- 10:37SPEAKER_01: And to make something holy is just literally setting apart.
- 10:40SPEAKER_01: For me, like I turn all my workouts into a prayer.
- 10:44SPEAKER_01: It's very simple.
- 10:45SPEAKER_01: It's like, okay, before I start my workout, I obviously know what I'm gonna do ahead of time.
- 10:49SPEAKER_01: Like that's part of it, being intentional.
- 10:51SPEAKER_01: But before I pray, I ask God, just say, God, be with me.
- 10:54SPEAKER_01: I want you to be with me through this workout.
- 10:56SPEAKER_01: And then I offer that workout up for somebody who's maybe needs prayer or suffering or some intention.
- 11:02SPEAKER_01: And then I just try hard.
- 11:04SPEAKER_01: Like when you sanctify your day, what you're telling God is that I'm gonna give you my best.
- 11:10SPEAKER_01: You know, it's like the the Cain and Abel, like, well, why was Cain's sacrifice, you know, wasn't accepted by God because he didn't give him his best, he gave him his worst.
- 11:20SPEAKER_01: And and Abel gave him his best.
- 11:21SPEAKER_01: So when we sanctify something, what we're really saying to God is I'm giving you my best.
- 11:26SPEAKER_01: I'm giving you my day.
- 11:27SPEAKER_01: And if we're giving it to God, well, then we gotta watch what we do throughout that day.
- 11:31SPEAKER_01: We can't be doing sinful things like I gave it to God, but that this day is gonna be filled with debauchery.
- 11:36SPEAKER_01: You know, it's like, yeah, if we sin, we fall.
- 11:38SPEAKER_01: Okay, we ask for forgiveness, but that's helping call us to mind like what this day is for and who that day is for.
- 11:44SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 11:45SPEAKER_02: Well, one of the one of the habits I talk about in the book is doing a particular examination, um, both at noon and before bed.
- 11:52SPEAKER_02: And especially for us that are in the trenches, we're working, right?
- 11:55SPEAKER_02: Like you, you know, it's it's and I mean for anybody really, but most people get a lunch break.
- 12:01SPEAKER_02: Even if you're working through your lunch break, you're eating through, you have a moment where you're eating in the middle of your day, right?
- 12:06SPEAKER_02: Or hopefully you are.
- 12:07SPEAKER_02: Um, and so one of the encouragements they say is like just in that moment, maybe you're eating, maybe you are away from the computer, you have a moment of silence, praise God, that's great.
- 12:14SPEAKER_02: Uh, just like think back on your past four hours, five hours, and ask a simple question.
- 12:19SPEAKER_02: It's like, did I work diligently?
- 12:21SPEAKER_02: You know, it doesn't mean you killed yourself, doesn't mean you didn't like breathe for a second or answer a text message or whatever, but for the most part, like, did you do your job and do it well?
- 12:30SPEAKER_02: And and just answer honestly, you know, and then say, okay, Lord, if you if the answer was yes, praise God.
- 12:36SPEAKER_02: Awesome.
- 12:37SPEAKER_02: Thank you, Lord, for empowering me to work diligently.
- 12:39SPEAKER_02: If the answer was no, ask for mercy, maybe think about why.
- 12:42SPEAKER_02: And then you have the back half of your day to work diligently, right?
- 12:46SPEAKER_02: Um, and so the then this isn't supposed to like condone scrupulosity or anything like that.
- 12:51SPEAKER_02: It doesn't mean like you don't want to like sell this thing, I don't know if it's true or not, that uh Microsoft Teams has a like a new software update that'll like track your eyes and your mouse pad um for people that are like working and like making sure you're actually like constantly working when you say you're okay.
- 13:06SPEAKER_02: I think it's a little much.
- 13:07SPEAKER_02: I don't know if that respects the dignity of the person, but um, but just saying I gave my best effort in the workplace, right?
- 13:13SPEAKER_02: And uh in this morning.
- 13:14SPEAKER_02: And and to your point about like, yeah, stoicism, um, John Paul II actually, you know, one of the you know, one of the things I say all the time is it's self-mastery for self-gift.
- 13:23SPEAKER_02: It's not self-mastery for the sake of self-mastery.
- 13:26SPEAKER_02: Um, and and so that's that's it's not bad in of itself.
- 13:29SPEAKER_02: That's the thing.
- 13:30SPEAKER_02: A lot of the Stoic virtues are, I mean, the cardinal virtues, right?
- 13:33SPEAKER_02: I mean, they talk about those, they're not bad in and of themselves.
- 13:35SPEAKER_02: They just need a proper orientation.
- 13:37SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 13:37SPEAKER_02: And that's what the church has always done, right?
- 13:39SPEAKER_02: We say, okay, what's the truth here?
- 13:40SPEAKER_02: And how do we sanctify it?
- 13:42SPEAKER_02: Right?
- 13:42SPEAKER_02: How do we how do you say this is the good and this philosophy or in the science or in this whatever?
- 13:46SPEAKER_02: And how do we orient it towards the good?
- 13:48SPEAKER_02: Um, and so it's like, yeah, we need self-mastery for the sake of self-gift to give it away.
- 13:53SPEAKER_02: Right.
- 13:54SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I I think you make a really good point there, uh, that John Paul too is that yeah, the the sacrifice is meant to be a gift.
- 14:00SPEAKER_01: Like, so yeah, if if if it is okay, well, I'm working on myself, but ultimately, is that for myself or is that for, hey, I'm trying to be, you know, a better husband, a better father, a better worker, be more diligent.
- 14:12SPEAKER_01: Is that so that am I, you know, taking those these asceticism or sanctifying my day or having religious whatever the the thing is that you're trying to do to become better, it's like, well, is that go is it a gift?
- 14:23SPEAKER_01: Uh you know, is that meant for somebody else?
- 14:26SPEAKER_01: Because you know, that's what we're called to do.
- 14:28SPEAKER_01: It's like your life is not about you, you know, it's about the other, and that's what loving is.
- 14:33SPEAKER_01: But it's it's really hard to do that if you don't have a plan.
- 14:39SPEAKER_01: You you don't just do it uh like if you just go through your day, it's really easy to go on cruise control or just like you know, I know you've probably been there where you're out you're driving somewhere and you're so used to routines, and that that day you had to go somewhere else, and it's like, oh man, I I totally forgot, because it's so easy to be conditioned into that.
- 14:57SPEAKER_01: But we can do that in reverse.
- 14:59SPEAKER_01: We can start to build in those little habits.
- 15:01SPEAKER_01: We don't have to do it all at once, like you're laying out here in your book, is that what you start small, start with your sleep.
- 15:08SPEAKER_01: But even your sleep can become a prayer as you drift off into dreams, that that can be a prayer.
- 15:14SPEAKER_01: You know, you can have like you talk about the examination before you go to bed, start small.
- 15:18SPEAKER_01: But you have to have uh those those steps set up.
- 15:22SPEAKER_01: You have to plan it out.
- 15:23SPEAKER_01: It's not gonna happen on its own.
- 15:24SPEAKER_01: So just the the same way that you can coast, you can really coast, you know, uh into nowhere, Land.
- 15:32SPEAKER_01: And next thing you know, you drifted so far away that you found yourself like in in a place that you don't want to be.
- 15:36SPEAKER_01: So other than that the first one, we have Sanctify Your Morning.
- 15:40SPEAKER_01: Uh you're the the uh you run the gym and and the page HyperoFit, which is about fitness, and you got a section about your body, and it's just uh nice this uh this will be this will come out the the day after uh this Sunday, so it'll probably come out on uh next Monday.
- 15:57SPEAKER_01: But this week's readings are Romans 1 to 2, which is all about offer your your body as a living sacrifice to you know don't be uh conformed, transform your mind.
- 16:06SPEAKER_01: And I just love that because that can really tie into your mission uh other than the book is helping people sanctify their bodies.
- 16:14SPEAKER_01: So tell me a little bit about your experience, obviously the what's in the book, but why that's so important to you and why you spend your life trying to help people understand that.
- 16:22SPEAKER_02: Yeah, uh, you know, for me, it started when I was 19.
- 16:26SPEAKER_02: I was uh I had just had my reversion to the faith, and a couple weeks went by and all of a sudden I was like tempted again, right?
- 16:32SPEAKER_02: I was a 19-year-old man and I just left this life of hedonistic pleasure seeking, and I was tempted.
- 16:38SPEAKER_02: And I was like, wait, hold on.
- 16:40SPEAKER_02: I love Jesus now.
- 16:42SPEAKER_02: Not supposed to be tempted anymore.
- 16:44SPEAKER_02: What is this?
- 16:45SPEAKER_02: And um, and it was actually through exercise and working out really, really hard that I really first had the thought of like, man, if I can mentally force my body to do this thing it doesn't want to do and me work out really hard, maybe that'll help me mentally stop my body from doing the things it wants to do, right?
- 16:59SPEAKER_02: And that you know, lo and behold, the church just calls this asceticism, do it for 2,000 years.
- 17:03SPEAKER_02: Um but uh but I I truly believe that exercise and nutritional discipline are the tools of the modern day ascetic, right?
- 17:10SPEAKER_02: Especially for us living in the West, especially for us that um aren't, you know, cloistered priests and nuns and and and brothers.
- 17:19SPEAKER_02: Um we have families to provide for, but we also just sit at a desk most of the day, right?
- 17:23SPEAKER_02: For most people, right?
- 17:24SPEAKER_02: You're sitting down, you know, the hardest thing that a lot of Americans do is, oh, it's cold outside in the winter.
- 17:31SPEAKER_02: Let me walk to my car.
- 17:32SPEAKER_02: Like that's the most physically uncomfortable most Americans are, unless you choose discomfort.
- 17:37SPEAKER_02: And this is something I eventually learned from later St.
- 17:40SPEAKER_02: John of the Cross, who is another inspiration for JP2, where he he has the difference between like a uh passive and active purgation, right?
- 17:48SPEAKER_02: So active purgation are the sufferings that you choose, fasting, you know, sleeping on the floor, cold showers, right?
- 17:54SPEAKER_02: Whatever.
- 17:54SPEAKER_02: Um, and then but the point of the active purgations is to prepare you for the passive purgations.
- 18:00SPEAKER_02: And those are the sufferings that God allows to happen, right?
- 18:04SPEAKER_02: And they're always so much harder than the active purgation.
- 18:07SPEAKER_02: For as hard as a bread and water fast might be, or sleeping on the floor, or whatever the case may be, that is nothing compared to uh family tragedy, right?
- 18:19SPEAKER_02: Or surgery you have to recover from, or you know, whatever the case may be.
- 18:23SPEAKER_02: Like the the passive, the things that God allows to happen, and sometimes he might will them, but usually it's an allowance, um, are always so much harder.
- 18:32SPEAKER_02: But you're not going to be prepared to receive that and to persevere through it well if you don't choose those times of sufferings in your daily life, right?
- 18:41SPEAKER_02: Um, and you know, not saying that the Catholic faith is all about suffering, because obviously it's not.
- 18:46SPEAKER_02: But that you know, Jesus does say, like you said, pick up your cross and follow me, right?
- 18:49SPEAKER_02: Prepare yourself.
- 18:50SPEAKER_02: Um, because at the end of the day, I want to live purgatory now, right?
- 18:55SPEAKER_02: Like I don't I don't want to live purgatory after I die.
- 18:58SPEAKER_02: Like that's not my goal, you know.
- 19:00SPEAKER_02: Um I I I I my purgatory, I want to live now.
- 19:03SPEAKER_02: I want I want God to purge me of whatever's blocking me from him, right?
- 19:08SPEAKER_02: And and starting with myself, right?
- 19:10SPEAKER_02: Like, um, and so that that exercise, nutritional discipline, um it needs to be well done, it needs to be technically excellent, right?
- 19:18SPEAKER_02: Because it and John Paul Second even said there's no such thing as Catholic chemistry, there's just chemistry.
- 19:23SPEAKER_02: Um, so yeah, I think things need to be technically excellent, but at the end of the day, it's it's it's this need for intentionality, conquer yourself to give of yourself, but also just in a practical perspective, like I want to get on the floor with my grandkid one day, you know.
- 19:38SPEAKER_02: I don't I don't want my wife to be like nagging me at 60 years old to take care of myself.
- 19:46SPEAKER_02: Like I I want to be an adult enough to just know that I should take care of myself, right?
- 19:50SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 19:50SPEAKER_01: Uh so there's I was I I was a trainer for a while, and that's that's what I would try to get through to people, like without even the religious expect aspects like, yeah, looking good is like what most people want to do to for working out, like eating right, like they want to lose weight, they want to look good.
- 20:04SPEAKER_01: But like the best part is feeling so good.
- 20:06SPEAKER_01: It's like when you have full you're full of energy, or when you're in your 60s that you can do things that you know you want to do, and it's like God wants you to have life, he wants you have it to the full.
- 20:16SPEAKER_01: You know, yeah, he wants you to be able to enjoy wine once in a while or or have a nice uh meal out, but he doesn't want you to to take the gift that he gives us and and run it into the ground and not use it.
- 20:26SPEAKER_01: It's like we're we're our bodies are made to move.
- 20:28SPEAKER_01: We're not made to sit down.
- 20:29SPEAKER_01: It's like they say sitting's worse than smoking.
- 20:31SPEAKER_01: So it's like we have to also find ways to to, like you said, to actively put ourselves in those positions so that when the the sufferings and those things that God's permits of will, those things that come to us, that we're we're we're trained for them.
- 20:44SPEAKER_01: I think that's the genius of Catholicism.
- 20:46SPEAKER_01: We do that every year, right?
- 20:48SPEAKER_01: Uh a little bit at Advent, but then we have Lent where we have a season to train ourselves for when those things come.
- 20:54SPEAKER_01: We're not surprised by them that, okay, yeah, I can do hard stuff.
- 20:58SPEAKER_01: I'm I'm in the middle of St.
- 21:00SPEAKER_01: Michael's Lent right now.
- 21:01SPEAKER_01: It's like this is this is a choice because you know I'm coming off of back surgery and I backs I was backsliding off a lot of my good habits, and I'm like, I need something to snap me back in.
- 21:10SPEAKER_01: I have to actively deny myself, you know, the cold showers and no meet on Wednesdays and Fridays.
- 21:16SPEAKER_01: Uh I've been slacking on the vigil at night.
- 21:18SPEAKER_01: I'm like, uh, the vigil's the hardest part of St.
- 21:20SPEAKER_01: Michael.
- 21:21SPEAKER_02: I tell you what, you're like, no, you're supposed to do eight hours of sleep.
- 21:26SPEAKER_01: I'm like, well, that's kind of contradicting one of the other principles.
- 21:28SPEAKER_01: I'm like, so I've just been getting up earlier and doing the whole hour, like getting up an hour earlier.
- 21:33SPEAKER_01: So I'm trying to do it that way.
- 21:34SPEAKER_01: I'm like, and then it's like it.
- 21:35SPEAKER_01: Well, if I do get up earlier, I gotta set an alarm or wake my wife up.
- 21:38SPEAKER_01: She can barely sleep as it is.
- 21:39SPEAKER_01: I'm like, at the end of the day, I'm like, I gotta pick my battles.
- 21:42SPEAKER_01: It's like, you know, there's a bunch.
- 21:44SPEAKER_01: But the the point is is that I'm actively doing these things because I know I need I need the practice again because I I'm slacking, you know.
- 21:52SPEAKER_01: I I'm, you know, I was wasn't going to work.
- 21:55SPEAKER_01: So I'm I'm a workman's comp and I had surgery and things like that.
- 21:57SPEAKER_01: It's like it's real easy.
- 21:58SPEAKER_01: Then next thing you know, I'm just Drinking wine every night because I'm a little sore, a little bit of pain.
- 22:03SPEAKER_01: It's like, then you just slowly go this way.
- 22:04SPEAKER_01: I'm like, no, I have to make a decision and be intentional and then start to sanctify.
- 22:09SPEAKER_01: And then with us, it's like, okay, not just your physical, we connect the spiritual and our bodies together, which is such a more powerful uh exercise in it because we're doing it for the right reasons.
- 22:20SPEAKER_01: But it's like you have to sometimes put a line in the sand and say, no, I'm gonna do these things, not because it's it's gonna get me to heaven.
- 22:28SPEAKER_01: But because what it's doing is preparing me for when the suffering comes that I do it well.
- 22:33SPEAKER_01: Because when we suffer is when we are almost the closest to God.
- 22:37SPEAKER_01: Like that's why we do stations of the cross.
- 22:39SPEAKER_01: That's why the we do these things.
- 22:41SPEAKER_01: St.
- 22:42SPEAKER_01: Faustina says that if angels could be envious of us, it would be for the Holy Communion and for our suffering.
- 22:48SPEAKER_01: Because that is the closest that we get to God, and they can't do that.
- 22:50SPEAKER_01: And like literally, we can be united to Jesus on the cross at every mass or every way if we sanctify our days or sanctify our time of mass, we can do that.
- 22:59SPEAKER_01: So it's that important to enter into that voluntarily, because he tells us to do it, right?
- 23:05SPEAKER_01: Deny yourself.
- 23:06SPEAKER_01: Jesus is telling us to do these things and but to do it for the right reasons.
- 23:09SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 23:10SPEAKER_02: Well, the St.
- 23:10SPEAKER_02: Paul says, you know, suffering produces endurance, endurance produces character, character, like, you know, the it's it's not the job itself, right?
- 23:18SPEAKER_02: Yeah, yeah.
- 23:18SPEAKER_02: It's uh it's um yeah, it's it's like I said, man.
- 23:22SPEAKER_02: I I had a priest in my undergrad.
- 23:25SPEAKER_02: Um he's given a homily, and he's like, you know, it's crazy, but I've you know, even people don't say it in so many words.
- 23:32SPEAKER_02: There's so many Catholics that just by the way they live, it's like they're shooting for purgatory, right?
- 23:37SPEAKER_02: They're like, because then if I make purgatory, like I'll be good eventually.
- 23:40SPEAKER_02: And and that's true.
- 23:41SPEAKER_02: Like theologically, that is true.
- 23:43SPEAKER_02: If you make it to purgatory, you're in, you know, like you're gonna get there.
- 23:46SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 23:47SPEAKER_02: Um, but and and but at the end of the day, there's there is that everybody's perfectly satisfied in heaven.
- 23:52SPEAKER_02: The cup is totally full.
- 23:53SPEAKER_02: But man, I want my cup to be as big as possible, you know.
- 23:56SPEAKER_02: Like, like why why wouldn't you want that?
- 23:58SPEAKER_02: And um, it's just having that eternity in mind, right?
- 24:01SPEAKER_02: And then it's like, yeah, I can suffer it's you know, like the quote I read, I can suffer today if it means I'm setting myself up through the grace of God for an eternity of of joy and hope and peace and and and love, right?
- 24:12SPEAKER_02: So it yeah, it's just that perspective.
- 24:14SPEAKER_01: And that just seems that's an issue a lot, obviously, with Americans is that this delayed gratification because you know, you know, working in the gyms, it's like people will come and you know, they get the first week they get going, then they're really sore and they don't see any results right away.
- 24:27SPEAKER_01: It's like, okay, well, you want to see some serious change.
- 24:30SPEAKER_01: It takes some months, and and it's like, well, the majority is gonna be your diet, it's like you're you're coming to the gym and doing some workouts, but then you're going home and washing down with double cheeseburgers and and 40 ounce you know of coke.
- 24:40SPEAKER_01: It's like so it's it's that I want instant results.
- 24:43SPEAKER_01: Like, well, you know, it took you years to to get out of shape, it's gonna take you some time to get it back.
- 24:47SPEAKER_01: And I think that it's so hard for us in this Amazon age of, hey, I I can click and I get anything I want anytime I want, I get food to my door, I can get packages anytime I want.
- 24:56SPEAKER_01: It's like, well, reality, it doesn't work like that.
- 24:58SPEAKER_01: Our bodies don't look that, and definitely our souls don't.
- 25:00SPEAKER_01: Like, there's this process of sanctification where it's like, yes, we're justified, we're safe, but we have to have a life of cooperating with that grace to get to purgatory eventually, hopefully, right?
- 25:12SPEAKER_01: So, what are some of the other things that you you talk about?
- 25:15SPEAKER_01: The body's such a big one, I'm so into it, you're into it.
- 25:18SPEAKER_01: So, check out his his uh Instagram, his Facebook, Hyperal Fit.
- 25:22SPEAKER_01: He's got all kinds of practical stuff on there.
- 25:24SPEAKER_01: He's always making videos, so check him out about that.
- 25:26SPEAKER_01: But what about the other than the sleep?
- 25:28SPEAKER_01: We talked about the body, what about the specific moments?
- 25:33SPEAKER_01: What are some advice uh on some ways that you do, you know?
- 25:36SPEAKER_01: Um I I love the brother Lawrence, uh, you know, practicing the presence of God.
- 25:40SPEAKER_01: What what what is some some advice you can help people to how to do that?
- 25:44SPEAKER_02: Yeah, so I don't I don't know who originally said the quote, but um it always stuck with me.
- 25:48SPEAKER_02: So you can't pray at all times unless you pray at specific times, right?
- 25:52SPEAKER_02: Um, and so the ones I encourage people to do, um, the the first one is is um the Angelus, right?
- 25:59SPEAKER_02: So the Angelus, uh 12 or 6, 12, and 6, but at least 12, right?
- 26:04SPEAKER_02: And and the what what I'll encourage people to do, especially if you have uh an Alexa device in your home, or like I'm not gonna say my phone's name because then all my devices will freak out.
- 26:14SPEAKER_02: But if you say your Apple device's name, um, and then but just say every day, remind me at 12 to pray the Angelus.
- 26:20SPEAKER_02: Like we have a Alexa speaker one, doesn't have a screen or anything, but uh so every day at noon says, Chase, here's your reminder, pray Angelus.
- 26:27SPEAKER_02: And my whole family knows when that goes off, no matter what we're doing, we're just gonna pause, take a moment, takes all of 45 seconds, a minute maybe, and we stop and we just pray the Angelus, right?
- 26:38SPEAKER_02: The little kids kind of mumble through the prayers of it, they know the Hail Mary's, and older kids kind of know it better.
- 26:42SPEAKER_02: So that's the first one.
- 26:44SPEAKER_02: Uh, the second one um is it's actually uh sanctifying specific moments with like your evening rosary as a family.
- 26:51SPEAKER_02: And once again, we use the Alexa.
- 26:53SPEAKER_02: It's like a church bell for the home, right?
- 26:55SPEAKER_02: Every day for our family at 7 p.m., Alexa goes off, here's your reminder pray rosary.
- 27:00SPEAKER_02: All my kids know, all right, we're not playing anymore, we're not watching a movie together.
- 27:05SPEAKER_02: We're gonna like we we'll turn off a movie halfway through the movie, like if we're watching a family movie, because we know this is our time for family prayer, right?
- 27:12SPEAKER_02: This is our time for family prayer.
- 27:14SPEAKER_02: And so it's finding those specific moments through your day that the church has just traditionally invited us to pause and to reflect and to incarnate our prayer life in our in our like just normal, ordinary lives, right?
- 27:28SPEAKER_02: Um, and so those are those are the two main ones, right?
- 27:32SPEAKER_02: It's like it's the Angelus and it's the family rosary at night at 7 p.m.
- 27:36SPEAKER_01: Um that's all it that's all you uh it doesn't have to be, like I said, it doesn't have to be you're not a monk.
- 27:42SPEAKER_01: Like those are great practices.
- 27:43SPEAKER_01: Rosary, I mean a rosary is a commitment, you know.
- 27:45SPEAKER_01: It's like especially at young kids, you know, it's like one's one wants to sit over on mom's lap, one wants to go here.
- 27:51SPEAKER_01: You know, I got the dog barking over there, and this one wants a this one wants a blanket, this one, no, I want to get the rosaries.
- 27:56SPEAKER_01: No, you get the rosaries.
- 27:57SPEAKER_01: It's like it could be heroic.
- 28:00SPEAKER_01: One's wepping the other one with it.
- 28:01SPEAKER_01: You know, someone's crying.
- 28:02SPEAKER_01: It's like this is this is normal, but it's beautiful because no matter what's going on, you're stopping it and you're dedicating that time to God.
- 28:09SPEAKER_01: It's imperfect as it is, he sees our hearts.
- 28:12SPEAKER_01: He doesn't see how perfect the prayers were said.
- 28:14SPEAKER_01: It's about, hey, that we're taking this moment to sanctify it.
- 28:18SPEAKER_01: And and the Angelus is is, you know, I I I go to 6 a.m.
- 28:21SPEAKER_01: Mass, which is beautiful.
- 28:22SPEAKER_01: We say the Angelist before Mass.
- 28:24SPEAKER_01: And that's it, it's awesome.
- 28:25SPEAKER_01: But the church has the genius within it, like the liturgy of the hours.
- 28:28SPEAKER_01: It's like the like the reference to the church bells that they're there, not because, hey, it's 11 o'clock.
- 28:34SPEAKER_01: It's like, no, hey, remind us, sanctify this hour.
- 28:37SPEAKER_01: Like this hour is for every every piece of time that you have is a gift from God.
- 28:42SPEAKER_01: Thank God for it.
- 28:43SPEAKER_01: It doesn't have to be elaborate, like you said, the Angelist, you know, can take a minute.
- 28:46SPEAKER_01: You know, with me, that's part of me getting ready to go back to work because I'm I'm still built in those routines and being intentional.
- 28:52SPEAKER_01: It's like, all right, Mass at 6 o'clock, I go at lunch at 11 o'clock, I do the Angelus myself, then I do my workout at lunch.
- 28:59SPEAKER_01: Three o'clock I get off.
- 29:00SPEAKER_01: It's like Divine Mercy.
- 29:01SPEAKER_01: I set on my phone, I got reminders, I use ALO.
- 29:03SPEAKER_01: So it's like I get the rosary on my way after Mass, it pops up.
- 29:07SPEAKER_01: I do the Angelus that pops up, and then Divine Mercy.
- 29:10SPEAKER_01: So you get into those things, and it's you can use technology to remind you.
- 29:14SPEAKER_01: It's like, why not?
- 29:15SPEAKER_01: That's what a bell is.
- 29:15SPEAKER_02: All a church bell is is technology, right?
- 29:17SPEAKER_02: It's that's literally it's what it is.
- 29:20SPEAKER_01: It is.
- 29:21SPEAKER_01: So if you can't remember, then use whatever you it takes to make it happen.
- 29:25SPEAKER_01: If you got an Apple Watch, whatever that is, you know, or my you know, post-it notes.
- 29:31SPEAKER_01: Anything that's gonna, you know, as I more and I study and read the Bible, it's so much of what God is telling them to remember.
- 29:38SPEAKER_01: It's like we forget, it's not like we don't want to pray.
- 29:41SPEAKER_01: It isn't like, you know, God, you're over there.
- 29:43SPEAKER_01: Sometimes it's just like we have so many responsibilities and life gets going throughout the day.
- 29:47SPEAKER_01: It's remembering.
- 29:48SPEAKER_01: So whatever it takes to recall, to get back to like, okay, what this is important, but I can't let these other things that are also important, but how to recall that hey, this is time to do this.
- 30:01SPEAKER_01: It's a great uh advice to to use Alexa, to use your Apple Watch, to build in those hours, those those little routines, and it can go a long way because you just build on top of those.
- 30:10SPEAKER_02: Yeah, and I think there's so many of us, at least is one of my struggles when I was just kind of getting back into my faith as my underground theology.
- 30:17SPEAKER_02: A lot of the the spiritual books, the classics, were weren't written for lay people.
- 30:21SPEAKER_02: You know, obviously there's Introduction Devout Life.
- 30:23SPEAKER_02: That one's a gym.
- 30:24SPEAKER_02: That was literally written for a lay person.
- 30:25SPEAKER_02: But John of the Cross, Teresa Bavala, Teresa Liz, like they were writing to uh brothers and nuns and and priests, right?
- 30:32SPEAKER_02: The soul of the apostolates, once again, it's written for priests.
- 30:34SPEAKER_02: And so one of my struggles early on in my spiritual life um was okay, how do I I this is I at first I thought I had to live this way, right?
- 30:43SPEAKER_02: I have to practice the extreme detachment of St.
- 30:45SPEAKER_02: John of the Cross.
- 30:46SPEAKER_02: And to a certain extent, that's true.
- 30:48SPEAKER_02: But even this morning, I was um actually reading a letter he wrote and um about not having, you know, being close to family, purposely moving away from family to cut off family ties and all these things.
- 30:57SPEAKER_02: So you're one of attachments to God.
- 30:58SPEAKER_02: Okay, cool.
- 30:59SPEAKER_02: As a married lay person, that's not an option, right?
- 31:03SPEAKER_01: You know, that would be You can't just go sabbatical and say, be gone for a while.
- 31:08SPEAKER_02: Yeah, that's right.
- 31:08SPEAKER_02: That would be literally one of the gravest sins that I could do as the primary caregiver and provider of my family.
- 31:14SPEAKER_02: Um and so it's like, okay, so but what's what's the idea here?
- 31:17SPEAKER_02: It's like, okay, it's be these people are trying to let nothing stand in the way of God.
- 31:22SPEAKER_02: And so then I have to examine my heart and say, I love my wife, I mean, uh, gosh darn it, more than anybody walking around right now on this earth.
- 31:31SPEAKER_02: But I can't make her an idol, right?
- 31:33SPEAKER_02: And that's super anybody who's married knows it's hard.
- 31:35SPEAKER_02: And if you don't know that it's hard, you don't think it's hard, you're either way holier than I am, or you're you just haven't thought about this long enough.
- 31:41SPEAKER_02: Okay, you know, because it's it's my kids for that matter.
- 31:46SPEAKER_02: Yeah, right, exactly.
- 31:47SPEAKER_02: Um, and so I would do anything for my wife.
- 31:50SPEAKER_02: Um, is that true for the Lord?
- 31:52SPEAKER_02: Right?
- 31:52SPEAKER_02: I would, I would do, I would die for my kids.
- 31:54SPEAKER_02: Is that true for the Lord?
- 31:56SPEAKER_02: Because it has to be, right?
- 31:57SPEAKER_02: Um, this goes into like the this Trinitarian personalism of John Paul II, right?
- 32:01SPEAKER_02: The point of the theology of the body.
- 32:03SPEAKER_02: It's it we use the marital act, the marriage uh analogy, um, because it's just the strongest one we have in this life.
- 32:10SPEAKER_02: Like it's there's you've never felt more in love with a human being, like, you know, not divine, um, um, other than your wife and your spouse.
- 32:19SPEAKER_02: And so that's why John the Cross will use the spousal imagery and why John Paul uh great picked it up in his theology of the body to say, like, yeah, this feeling, this effort, this this drive you have to love and to provide and to be with your spouse, like that has to be primarily applied to the Lord, right?
- 32:36SPEAKER_01: Yeah, um, he used that example over and over again to talk about his his relationship to us in the church.
- 32:42SPEAKER_01: It's like the the the groom and the bride.
- 32:45SPEAKER_01: There's a reason for that.
- 32:46SPEAKER_01: It's not like it it it's it's to show that how intimate it's meant to be.
- 32:51SPEAKER_01: And then our relationship with our spouses is supposed to imitate the the trinity, which is self-giving and and it's uh fruitful and and all those things that go with it.
- 32:59SPEAKER_01: So, what is some advice?
- 33:00SPEAKER_01: We are the the Catholic couple, even though I'm just by myself.
- 33:02SPEAKER_01: Katie is uh actually she's at the gym.
- 33:05SPEAKER_01: She just got straight from school.
- 33:06SPEAKER_01: She's like, if I don't get the gym this week, I need to, she's like, I'm trying to do, she's been doing good three days a week.
- 33:10SPEAKER_01: So I said, You go, I'll handle this.
- 33:12SPEAKER_01: I got the kids, they're they're outside running around like crazy.
- 33:15SPEAKER_01: But what's so what's the practical ways to help sanctify our marriages?
- 33:19SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I talk about it a little bit in the book.
- 33:21SPEAKER_02: It's it's one of the last chapters.
- 33:23SPEAKER_02: It's sanctifying your evening, it's being intentional with your evening, right?
- 33:26SPEAKER_02: Um so obviously, if you have kids, one of the big temptations for at least me and probably other fathers out there is you walk through the doors and you're just like exhausted.
- 33:34SPEAKER_02: You just want to sit there and like do nothing, right?
- 33:37SPEAKER_02: And it's funny, like even for me, like there's days where I'm like, I am that exhausted, but I also know now granted my kids are young enough to where I can just like sit on the couch and my kids are just gonna jump on me, right?
- 33:47SPEAKER_02: It doesn't take much energy.
- 33:48SPEAKER_02: I'm just gonna sit there, I'm just gonna take it like a man, right?
- 33:51SPEAKER_02: Like just you know.
- 33:52SPEAKER_02: Um, and but for them, it's it's what they they feel loved.
- 33:56SPEAKER_02: It's all right, cool.
- 33:57SPEAKER_02: Uh, but even then, okay, so we do our family rosary at seven, we start the bedtime routine.
- 34:02SPEAKER_02: Our kids know like you don't gotta be asleep, but you gotta be upstairs in your room like 7:30, 8, somewhere in that window.
- 34:07SPEAKER_02: And then it's okay, now I my typical bedtime is like 9 or 9:30.
- 34:11SPEAKER_02: That means that last hour of my day, like I have to be with my wife.
- 34:15SPEAKER_02: Like, I have to be intentional.
- 34:17SPEAKER_02: I have to say, like, honey, like you wanna watch a show?
- 34:20SPEAKER_02: Do you want to read a book together?
- 34:21SPEAKER_02: Do you just want to like sit and like debrief, chat about something, whatever the case may be?
- 34:26SPEAKER_02: Um, because if I'm not, if we're just like scrolling on our phones or whatever, all of a sudden we're gonna look up, it's 8 45.
- 34:33SPEAKER_02: It's like, oh, you have 15 minutes, you want to you wanna chat about something?
- 34:35SPEAKER_02: Then then she's gonna get annoyed, like, no, I don't want to talk 15 minutes, you know.
- 34:40SPEAKER_02: Um, and so uh, and then other advice, you know, you've probably heard is like just planning the date nights.
- 34:45SPEAKER_02: It's it's it's it's it's intentionality, like that's it, and it's doing it consistently.
- 34:49SPEAKER_02: And one of the things I say in the book is a consistency, consistency, consistency, right?
- 34:52SPEAKER_02: Um, you just if you're consistently putting that intentionality forward, your spouse is gonna see it.
- 34:59SPEAKER_02: They're gonna feel left, right?
- 35:00SPEAKER_02: And if you're not, hopefully they call you out on it, right?
- 35:04SPEAKER_02: Um, and so that's that's the idea of don't expect your relationship to flourish, um, to grow by accident.
- 35:12SPEAKER_02: Same with the Lord, it's not gonna happen, right?
- 35:14SPEAKER_02: That's how most marriages like suffer an end, is because you're starting to drift away.
- 35:18SPEAKER_01: Yeah, if you're not putting, you know, just like our relationship with God is like you only talk one one one hour a week at mass, which that that's that's you know, that's that's your you know requirement, right?
- 35:28SPEAKER_01: But if you did that with your spouse, you only talked one hour out of the week, like well, your relationship's not gonna be that great.
- 35:34SPEAKER_01: You know, uh one of the things that we've been doing a lot, which especially when the weather is nice, is like after our prayer time, after the kids go down, they go up to the room, is going for a walk.
- 35:43SPEAKER_01: Like even just a 20, 30 minute walk, nothing crazy, nothing even crazy brisk.
- 35:47SPEAKER_01: But there's just something about walking.
- 35:50SPEAKER_01: I know the saints have done it, and Augustine has the quote solved by walking.
- 35:54SPEAKER_01: There's something about like going back to what your book is about to sanctify the you know your moments and your days and your body, is that because you're doing your body feels good.
- 36:03SPEAKER_01: We're meant to move, like you're moving, you're out in nature, you're just having a conversation, it just feels more relaxed, it's not so serious.
- 36:10SPEAKER_01: Like if you're sitting at a table, next thing you know, you're you know, you could be talking about budgets when you're walking and you know, all these things that you have to do.
- 36:16SPEAKER_01: It's just something about it that it just seems more uh less confrontational.
- 36:21SPEAKER_01: That's what I find.
- 36:22SPEAKER_01: We're out there walking, it's like we're on a team, like we're doing this together.
- 36:25SPEAKER_01: Feels more versus like, okay, well, we got these things and we got to do them, and like we lay them out, and like my life's a you know, a Google uh calendar, you know.
- 36:32SPEAKER_01: It's like but there's the pro tip, go for some walks.
- 36:35SPEAKER_01: Even if you can't do it every night, maybe uh you know, you can't go day nights all the time, but you can go for a nice half hour, 40 minute walk and like literally talk about things that are other than the budget, like hey, like not just hey, how was your day, honey, but like, hey, what's going on like about this thing, or like what are some of your dreams, or like planning things, like things that like will put sparks in a relationship, other than those monotonous, you know, mandatory things that you need to do.
- 37:00SPEAKER_01: But if that's all it is, then that you're not gonna be sanctifying your marriage.
- 37:04SPEAKER_01: You're gonna be more like a have a business partner or a roommate or things like that.
- 37:07SPEAKER_01: We have to be intentional, uh, that she is our beloved, you know, so she's our our our our our spouse and our wives, and and it it's it's a definitely a big deal.
- 37:17SPEAKER_02: Well, and this is uh there's an analogy I give in the book.
- 37:20SPEAKER_02: Uh I didn't make it up.
- 37:21SPEAKER_02: I I was taught it.
- 37:22SPEAKER_02: It's like when it comes to prayer, uh it's similar to a relationship.
- 37:26SPEAKER_02: Like, so if I'm on a date with my wife, uh it would be weird if we read from a script, right?
- 37:32SPEAKER_02: The conversation just kind of flows organically.
- 37:35SPEAKER_02: But at the same time, there's certain moments in our relationship, like our wedding vows, or maybe uh writing a letter to her where the words are so important that I don't want to mess them up.
- 37:42SPEAKER_02: So they are scripted, right?
- 37:44SPEAKER_02: Analogously with our how we talk to the Lord.
- 37:45SPEAKER_02: We have times of that the interpersonal dialogue, then we have times like the liturgy, right?
- 37:49SPEAKER_02: Rose Reed that it's scripted.
- 37:50SPEAKER_02: And so, but you know, to flip that, um, this is also an awesome opportunity to have both of those things in the relationship.
- 37:58SPEAKER_02: And it's like it's stopping asking, like, when was the last time you know I was super intentional with like what I had to say to my spouse, right?
- 38:05SPEAKER_02: Um, not just the organic back and forth, even though that's like the primary and the vast majority of the way you need to talk to your spouse.
- 38:10SPEAKER_02: Um, but but thinking back, it's like it's like, hey, when's the last time?
- 38:14SPEAKER_02: Like I cared about the words so much I had to write them down, you know.
- 38:17SPEAKER_02: And for me, like for it was my my wife um on my uh on our anniversary, you know, uh in last month of July, and uh as a crazy week for me, work-wise, I was kind of all over the place.
- 38:28SPEAKER_02: I was in a anyway, it was it was a rough, rough week.
- 38:31SPEAKER_02: But I I come into my office one day and she had just written this really beautiful, simple like letter to me, right?
- 38:36SPEAKER_02: And it's sitting right here, still have it, right?
- 38:38SPEAKER_02: And so it's just that that intentionality because like when you write a letter, when you when you even um for me, not as romantic as a letter, but um, there was something that happened, and I sent her just like a kind of a lengthy text, right?
- 38:49SPEAKER_02: Um, and I just thought about it and I texted out the words, and she responded, like, hey, I felt really loved when you did that.
- 38:53SPEAKER_02: Thank you so much.
- 38:54SPEAKER_02: Like, you know, great, awesome.
- 38:55SPEAKER_02: It's just once again, it's that intentionality in how you communicate, not just letting or assuming your your spouse just knows like what you wanted to say.
- 39:03SPEAKER_02: It's like but they they don't, you know.
- 39:05SPEAKER_01: I I really enjoyed your section on prayer and that you're making those distinctions because you know, us Catholics, we get a bad rap that you guys just say these rope prayers repeat yourselves.
- 39:14SPEAKER_01: But you know, doing the St.
- 39:15SPEAKER_01: Michael's Len, I've been doing a lot of the contemptal of prayer and just trying to sit there.
- 39:18SPEAKER_01: I've never heard the formula that you gave for for prayer, and I've been using it.
- 39:23SPEAKER_01: I think it's very helpful.
- 39:24SPEAKER_01: I was familiar with acts, adoration, contrition, thanksgiving, uh, supplication, but you have plaid P-L-A-D.
- 39:31SPEAKER_01: Talk to us a little bit about that.
- 39:32SPEAKER_01: I thought that was interesting, and it's definitely helping me uh how I was doing my uh St.
- 39:36SPEAKER_01: Michael's uh prayer time.
- 39:38SPEAKER_02: Oh, praise God.
- 39:38SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 39:39SPEAKER_02: So it's it's a structure I was taught when I was a missionary with NET a long time ago.
- 39:43SPEAKER_02: Um, but and it's just kind of always stuck with me, just because of it of its simplicity, but also it's it's one of those structures that um I can do it in about five or ten minutes, I can do it in an hour, right?
- 39:52SPEAKER_02: It's very flexible.
- 39:53SPEAKER_02: So uh yeah, P-L-A-D, praise, listen, ask, and dedicate.
- 39:57SPEAKER_02: So uh first thing we should do with no matter what type of prayer it is, is just acknowledging who you're talking to.
- 40:03SPEAKER_02: Like you're talking to the Lord of the universe, the King of Kings, the Lord of Lords.
- 40:06SPEAKER_02: This is the greatest place to go to like the Psalms and just, you know, Lord, you are my rock, you're my shield, you are good, you are, you know, just acknowledge He doesn't need to hear it.
- 40:13SPEAKER_02: We need to hear it, right?
- 40:15SPEAKER_02: Like we need to be reminded of the of the of the just the stupendous, gratuitous nature of the fact that we get to pray as a son of the father, right?
- 40:25SPEAKER_02: Or a daughter of the father.
- 40:26SPEAKER_02: Um, and like that's just crazy.
- 40:28SPEAKER_02: That's crazy.
- 40:28SPEAKER_02: Like that is a whole theological like treatise can be written on that, and may have been.
- 40:32SPEAKER_02: Um, but you start by just praise, and then you know, in that praise, um turning to Thanksgiving, right?
- 40:37SPEAKER_02: Like thanking the Lord for whatever in your life, the good, the bad, the ugly, people, situations, work, whatever, and doing that for as long as you need to until you've kind of recollected yourself, right?
- 40:48SPEAKER_02: You've you've noticed, like, okay, I'm zoned in, right?
- 40:51SPEAKER_02: And then that's when you go to L.
- 40:52SPEAKER_02: And if you don't have a lot of time, then I'm typically just diving right into the gospel today.
- 40:56SPEAKER_02: But um, if you do have maybe 20, 30 minutes, great.
- 40:58SPEAKER_02: Uh St.
- 40:58SPEAKER_02: Teresa of Avalus started every um prayer time with a little bit of spiritual reading.
- 41:03SPEAKER_02: The one mistake Catholics will make, though, is they'll turn their personal prayer time into spiritual reading.
- 41:08SPEAKER_02: And the two are not the same, right?
- 41:10SPEAKER_02: You should do spiritual reading, but that's not the and that might lead you to prayer, but it is not in and of itself prayer, right?
- 41:15SPEAKER_02: It's spiritual reading, which is good.
- 41:17SPEAKER_02: And so maybe do that for a couple of minutes.
- 41:19SPEAKER_02: Once again, just if you feel like you need some help zoning in, focusing on the Lord, to empower you to then turn to scripture, right?
- 41:27SPEAKER_02: That's the whole point of the L part is turning to Scripture.
- 41:30SPEAKER_02: Um, turn like for me, I'm I I I encourage people to pray with the church.
- 41:34SPEAKER_02: I do like pray through the daily readings.
- 41:35SPEAKER_02: Not that it's wrong or bad to like just pray through the Bible or anything, but um for me, it's just like I'm gonna, it's it's easy.
- 41:41SPEAKER_02: I open up an ascension app.
- 41:42SPEAKER_02: The whole church is doing united that way.
- 41:44SPEAKER_02: It's nice.
- 41:45SPEAKER_02: Um, and so uh, you know, praying with the first reading, second reading, or maybe if you're if you don't have as much time, just going right to the gospel, totally fine.
- 41:52SPEAKER_02: But then entering into that, like that dialogue with the Lord, right?
- 41:56SPEAKER_02: And this is like when Lecture Divina could come in handy if you've done that before.
- 41:59SPEAKER_02: Um, but you're you're saying you're reading it once and reading it again, you know, inviting the Holy Spirit to speak to you in whatever way he's he's wanting to, if he wants to, like in that moment.
- 42:09SPEAKER_02: Um, and then uh you can do that for and you can do that, you know, that for 30 minutes, you can do it for five minutes, right?
- 42:16SPEAKER_02: There's it's really flexible depending on how much time you have.
- 42:19SPEAKER_02: And then after that, go into the A, which is to ask.
- 42:22SPEAKER_02: And this is where a lot of people forget that you should ask for the grace to implement whatever you feel like the Lord is asking you to do in the listening part, right?
- 42:30SPEAKER_02: And if there's nothing you feel like the Lord's asking you to do or to change or to do or to apologize or whatever, um just reflect on, like, okay, was I listening hard enough?
- 42:40SPEAKER_02: You know, because odds are there's gonna be something that at least gets stirred up, right?
- 42:44SPEAKER_02: That the Lord wants you to act on or to be intentional with, or maybe it's apologizing to somebody, maybe it's living more intentionally, maybe it's uh, or or could be very well, like there's a beautiful scripture passage, and you just kind of sat in consolation of like, God, you're so good, right?
- 42:59SPEAKER_02: And the ask could be like, Lord, give me the grace to remember that you are so good, right?
- 43:05SPEAKER_02: Like that, like I just experienced in my prayer.
- 43:07SPEAKER_02: But for me, this is also where I'll turn to our blessed mother and uh I'll ask her for her her intercession.
- 43:12SPEAKER_02: I'll literally name like everybody in my family, anybody I promise to pray for.
- 43:16SPEAKER_02: Um, if I don't have a ton of time to do that, I'll be like, Mother Mary, please pray for all these people I usually pray for.
- 43:21SPEAKER_02: Help brother out, you know.
- 43:23SPEAKER_02: Um, and then um, and then because I I typically do my personal prayer first thing in the morning, um, the D is for dedicate, where you can dedicate the rest of your day to the to whatever you want to.
- 43:34SPEAKER_02: You can make your acts meritorious.
- 43:35SPEAKER_02: And so this is actually for me, uh, this is actually kind of a newer development.
- 43:39SPEAKER_02: I've done the dedication for a while where I'm like, Lord, offered this day for this person, this place, or this situation.
- 43:44SPEAKER_02: Um, but recently uh I was just you know prompted in prayer one day to just turn once again to our blessed mother and say, Mother Mary, like I've consecrated Jesus through through you.
- 43:54SPEAKER_02: Uh take the intentions or the actions of my day and distribute them as you see fit.
- 43:58SPEAKER_02: You know, like just try.
- 44:00SPEAKER_02: Trusting Mary.
- 44:00SPEAKER_02: And she knows who in your life needs prayers, but she also knows the person in Tim Buck 2 who might need prayers, right?
- 44:06SPEAKER_02: Like, you know.
- 44:08SPEAKER_02: And so, yeah, so praise, listen, ask, and dedicate.
- 44:11SPEAKER_02: Um, and you can even flip back and forth between the asking and the listening part, like if you need to, if you have a longer time in adoration.
- 44:16SPEAKER_02: Um, during the praise part, if you have longer time, this is where you could do liturgy hours potentially, right?
- 44:21SPEAKER_02: Because that's kind of the point of liturgy hours, is that praise?
- 44:23SPEAKER_02: Um, but yeah, so I've been doing it for, I mean, for I mean, years and years and years and years and years.
- 44:28SPEAKER_02: And uh it's it's never never let me down.
- 44:31SPEAKER_02: Um, and especially because like if it you are in a season where your prayer is dry, when you have a structure, it's nice because you're like, cool, like, yeah, I don't get the warm fuzzies right now, but that's fine.
- 44:41SPEAKER_02: God still deserves my praise, He still deserves me to read his word.
- 44:44SPEAKER_02: I still have people I could pray for, and I can still offer my day.
- 44:47unknown: Right.
- 44:48SPEAKER_01: And and and that's and that's what it is.
- 44:50SPEAKER_01: Like if you get that dryness, like the St.
- 44:52SPEAKER_01: John of the Cross, you know, it's like, hey, that's fine.
- 44:55SPEAKER_01: God, you know, I think it was Father Mike said something like that.
- 44:58SPEAKER_01: It's like some of the best masses are the ones where we don't feel anything because we're we're doing it not for what we're getting out of it, but we're there for God Himself.
- 45:06SPEAKER_01: And and that's what he sees.
- 45:07SPEAKER_01: He sees our hearts.
- 45:08SPEAKER_01: It's like, yeah, if he gave us all the feelings all the time, it's like, well, it would we'd be spoiled by it.
- 45:13SPEAKER_01: Like he knows he knows what we need and when we need it.
- 45:16SPEAKER_01: Sometimes that dryness or that those spiritual deserts are there for a reason so that we we we know who we are thirsting for, you know, and it's very important.
- 45:25SPEAKER_01: Well, Chase, this book is uh, I'm not quite finished, I'm almost done.
- 45:30SPEAKER_01: But er as I'm reading it, I'm like, man, I'm like, oh, you're quoting all the right people that I love, and and a lot of insightful stuff, and and and it's full of a lot of wisdom from obviously, you know, there hasn't been an original idea in a long time.
- 45:41SPEAKER_01: It's like you're you've been reading the same lot of the same books I've been reading, and it's inspiring you through your work and through your life, and you're taking it all, but putting it in a practical guide to help people.
- 45:50SPEAKER_01: And uh I really do like your advice about people like don't overwhelm yourself.
- 45:54SPEAKER_01: If you feel overwhelmed, then take a step back and maybe just read one chapter at a time or try to implement the sleep first.
- 46:00SPEAKER_01: Get you know, get those small things going first before you try to do everything at once because sometimes that you're not ready for that.
- 46:07SPEAKER_01: You know, you just like how do you eat an elephant, like one bite at a time?
- 46:10SPEAKER_01: Like, don't go crazy and try to go to the buffet and eat all the food of the spiritual diet that you're trying to do because you you're not ready, you may not be ready for it yet.
- 46:18SPEAKER_01: So, so sometimes you have to walk literally before you run.
- 46:21SPEAKER_01: And in this spiritual life, it's more about, like you said, consistency.
- 46:26SPEAKER_01: That's more important that you're not doing all of it at once, but you're you're on this road of being okay, you're showing up, you're being consistent, and then implementing it as you can go.
- 46:35SPEAKER_02: Totally.
- 46:36SPEAKER_02: Yeah, that's right.
- 46:37SPEAKER_01: Well, uh, so this is the book Sanctify Your Day by Sophia Prest.
- 46:41SPEAKER_01: Um, they they have tons of great books.
- 46:44SPEAKER_01: I will put the the link for the book and his where to where to find you on Instagram.
- 46:49SPEAKER_01: Uh what what's your website so people know?
- 46:51SPEAKER_02: Yeah, it's hyperfit.org, h-y-p-ur-o-f-it.org.
- 46:55SPEAKER_02: Or if you literally Google Catholic Fitness Company, like there's there's only so many of us, and so we're that's good, that's good.
- 47:03SPEAKER_01: Yeah, you you're you uh I love I love to see it.
- 47:06SPEAKER_01: I love people who are who are in that space, but doing and showing people like okay, why we want to do it.
- 47:12SPEAKER_01: It's not for uh you know six-pack abs, which are nice, but the reason we're doing it is because it's such a gift, and we want to give that gift of our our health to other people and to share.
- 47:22SPEAKER_01: Um, so get the book, Sanctify Your Day, structure to live an intentional, healthy, and holy life.
- 47:27SPEAKER_01: Chase, thank you so much for uh for taking the time uh coming on again.
- 47:31SPEAKER_01: We really do appreciate it.
- 47:33SPEAKER_01: And I wish you all the luck with it with this book and continued blessings in uh your ministry.
- 47:37SPEAKER_02: Thanks, Bobby.
- 47:38SPEAKER_02: Appreciate it, brother.
