- 0:00We podcasted 2 days ago and then the next day we shot indoor
- 0:05together and then today we shot outdoor together.
- 0:08So we spent three days in a row together.
- 0:11Who would have had it on their on their map?
- 0:14And we probably would have tomorrow, but Brianna and I are
- 0:16heading out to a tournament and you're catching a jet home and
- 0:21you know so, but it was good. What was your thought on
- 0:24shooting indoor? First ever time, if I'm not
- 0:27mistaken, shooting indoor. What did you think?
- 0:29So you know how like the first time you record yourself and
- 0:33especially if you're walking with any pace, you're like,
- 0:35Dang, I am mouth breathing hard right now.
- 0:38My first thought when I came to full draw and I let out a little
- 0:42and that dude was a foot in front of me.
- 0:43I was like, I know he felt that on his neck.
- 0:48Guarantee he felt that on his neck.
- 0:51And that was the most I I felt like like when you go to boot
- 0:55camp, everything is the term is not to but like every you line
- 1:00up, everything is here and that's how I felt draw.
- 1:03I felt like I was drawn in a phone booth.
- 1:04But it was fun though you might have got like a competitive
- 1:08scratched a little competitive itch there.
- 1:11So that that bow that I'm shooting right now, if I upgrade
- 1:16the one that I have currently is probably going to turn it to a
- 1:19target bow of some sort. I lot of got me look.
- 1:23I think it's a good idea, Russell.
- 1:25Yeah, Blame no. Don't.
- 1:28Blame me, I'll tell you why too. Why I think it's it's would be
- 1:35good number #1 is as we talked about indoor really shows you
- 1:42all your holes in shooting, you know what I mean?
- 1:44Because it's not like shooting outdoor where you can go, you
- 1:47know, I didn't account for the slope or there was wind or the
- 1:52sun was hitting me crazy. Like there's nothing.
- 1:55It's just you, the bow and the target, like that's it.
- 1:59So it's so good for that, I think.
- 2:01And and the nice part is you shoot the long lift.
- 2:04So if you get the, you know, whatever the lift X or the Hoyt
- 2:0890, whatever you want to get or the the bow tech virtue AD,
- 2:11whatever. You got to lead with that dog,
- 2:13you know you got to. Lead a virtue AD.
- 2:15My point is, like you, you have a good setup to transition into
- 2:19an indoor bow. I think you're shooting £85.
- 2:23That was not a smart thing you like.
- 2:25You're both felt good though. Like today I shot it.
- 2:29I think I shot one whole quiver and then I shot at least 4
- 2:32arrows, maybe 5. Your draw felt good.
- 2:36I mean, it doesn't feel super crazy, yeah.
- 2:40Holding. That.
- 2:41No, I'm just saying like I was impressed by the draw cycle.
- 2:43I was impressed by it. Yeah, it felt good.
- 2:45Yeah, it's it's clean. So that's why.
- 2:48Because before I was shooting, I was shooting a bow that had 75
- 2:53common mods and I was twisting it up and that felt like that
- 2:57felt a little bit more junk, you know what I mean?
- 2:59And then I wasn't going to upgrade and then they dropped 80
- 3:02LB mods and I'm like, well, take my money I guess.
- 3:07So that's kind of, that's kind of how that went.
- 3:08And it, it, it is noticeably smoother.
- 3:11One thing I did notice too, for indoor, the peep just
- 3:15disappears. Like I might as well know how to
- 3:19peep tied in. I could see like a faint black
- 3:22circle. What is weird?
- 3:24Like what is that phenomenon? What?
- 3:26What am I? I don't know, I think it has
- 3:28something to do with the lighting.
- 3:31And you're absolutely right, it is interesting.
- 3:33Like you know your peeps lined up when you just don't see
- 3:37anything. Like you said, it almost fades
- 3:39out. But what's I'll tell you what's
- 3:40really a trip. So on my indoor bow yesterday I
- 3:44was shooting my outdoor bow. So it has no clarifier and no
- 3:47magnification, but my indoor bow has clarifier and magnification.
- 3:52What's really a trip dude, is when you're in a draw and that I
- 3:55can actually see my eyelashes, the reflection of my eyelashes
- 3:59in the clarifier. And that is odd.
- 4:02And like if I shot it out outside, you're not going to
- 4:05probably see that. So I don't know, it has
- 4:07something to do maybe with the the lighting and the reflection
- 4:10off the floor. I'm not sure.
- 4:12But you are right. It is like a totally different
- 4:14look. I would say like if you are
- 4:16strictly a bow hunter and in your mind you, you have like set
- 4:21up some mental defense mechanism like these folks shoot better
- 4:25than me because they're they're nerds and I could easily
- 4:28transition over to that. I would say, I would say try it
- 4:32and right because it makes you, if you have any type of
- 4:37competitive moan in your body, you're going to be like, how do
- 4:39I clean? How do I clean up?
- 4:41How do I like hone that edge? Because that peep thing happens
- 4:45too. If you're if you're hunting last
- 4:47light early morning, it's the same.
- 4:49It's the same thing. But like then you kind of get
- 4:52away with it and it, but when you have to shoot 30 arrows and
- 4:56you have to deal with that peep, it makes you have to deal with
- 4:59that peep and start researching what am I going to do next?
- 5:02So. Yeah, yeah.
- 5:03And and I think another thing I really like about indoor as well
- 5:07is just like you, I am competitive and it's the best
- 5:10thing I found in archery to be competitive with yourself.
- 5:13I mean, the other thing that's good as I love to shoot like
- 5:16just go out and shoot groups and see if how tight I can get them
- 5:19and get them tighter and tighter and tighter.
- 5:21That's competitive with yourself too.
- 5:23But shooting indoor, like you could stand inside at 10 yards
- 5:26and shoot paper or 20 or, you know, however far and it's like
- 5:32such a good way to push yourself to keep going, keep improving,
- 5:36keep getting more consistent it without breaking arrows either
- 5:40because you're not shooting groups at one dot, you're
- 5:42shooting at 3 separate dollars. So it's that that's nice about
- 5:46it. And I thought it was what was
- 5:48interesting about the day we shot, we will have a video on
- 5:51our channel and then the outdoor video will be on yours.
- 5:54But I have never even shot when it was fully booked out, fully
- 6:00crowded, Right. So like you said, normally when
- 6:03we're there filming, it's like just me and maybe one other guy
- 6:05like 5 rows down. Yeah, we were bam, bam, bam,
- 6:08bam, bam, bam bam. So it was.
- 6:10It was. But I think someone needs to put
- 6:12in for a peel to, you know, I'm not saying so allow bigger
- 6:17people to fit in the slots, but like.
- 6:19Listen. What if?
- 6:21Like who? Who?
- 6:22Who gets armrests? Yeah.
- 6:24Yeah. I hate the metal seat.
- 6:27I hate, yeah, I just when you sitting back in the back and
- 6:33watching that in a row, my mind just said I don't want nothing
- 6:37to do with this. I don't want to partake at all.
- 6:42It's it's so you got to not be claustrophobic.
- 6:46You got to not have a fear of people because it's just like, I
- 6:52could already feel the anxiety of like go and put your bow
- 6:55down. And like I would notice how
- 6:57people put it down like in front of them out of their box that
- 7:02you have the stand in so that they're able to like get around
- 7:05it. Otherwise, like you just you
- 7:09can't can't get in It's. It was tight.
- 7:13Very tight. Now I'm now I'm trying to
- 7:15picture like in person what Vegas will look like when
- 7:20because it's the same size, but for 100 people lined up.
- 7:26Yeah. It's going to be crazy.
- 7:27There's some final Destination vibes is what it is crazy
- 7:30because it because it's like there's some trust in there too,
- 7:32not to like first, don't tell me I'm the only one who got scarred
- 7:36a little bit by Final Destination where you're
- 7:39trusting that that dude right next to you, his peep is tied in
- 7:42properly. You're trusting that they've
- 7:45checked their arrows so it's not going to explode on like when
- 7:48you you're tracking you're you're trusting that their knock
- 7:50is good that close to each other.
- 7:53Some a problem with their bow is your problem.
- 7:55Like a fact there was a. You're also trusting that they
- 7:58didn't eat Han spicy chili for dinner.
- 8:00Could you imagine? Maybe that's my Dick, that's my
- 8:05play. That might be my play.
- 8:07Yeah, you go take. Me to Arby's baby.
- 8:09And yeah, that's not it. I quit.
- 8:12I need him moved like he's out out disqualified for his dinner.
- 8:18I could not. That would be disgusting.
- 8:22Oh yeah, don't have some gum. You got to chew it.
- 8:24You got to spit it out. It's going to be in your gum.
- 8:27I kind of know mine display, yeah.
- 8:29You've ever meant to be pocket just in case you're like, you
- 8:33know, kind of use them like, like, like what's the salt
- 8:37called that they like? Smelling salts.
- 8:39Smelling salts but like some mints you crush up it's told
- 8:42them so you can like have some minty freshness up your nose in
- 8:45case it is like bead around you. I can't smell anything anyway so
- 8:51I have a terrible nose. It's not great for hunting, but
- 8:54for everything else I think it's it's fine.
- 8:57My nose is not good. No, no, I have had a nose
- 9:00surgery. Fun fact.
- 9:01It didn't work or you wrecked it again?
- 9:03No, it didn't work. I mean, it was OK.
- 9:05I think my airflow improved like a little bit, but not it wasn't
- 9:10what I was hoping for. That's what I'm saying, Yeah.
- 9:13But. You went under for the surgery?
- 9:14Oh yeah. Dang you got you went under and
- 9:16woke up like not fixed is got to be annoying.
- 9:19It's better. I mean, like I said, it's
- 9:21slightly better. That was a long time ago, but
- 9:23this is. Slightly better.
- 9:26We couldn't have stayed together before.
- 9:30What was your snoring like that? I don't know, I was sleeping.
- 9:33Let me turn my I'm going to turn my chair so this is couples
- 9:37there I love it got him because y'all getting ready to say for
- 9:41better or for worse at some point yeah true.
- 9:44So if his snoring gets worse, you're locked in.
- 9:46He he. Caught his mom's on my side,
- 9:48I'm. Doing a CPAP.
- 9:50To get a CPAP or look to fix it himself.
- 9:52There's nothing wrong with you telling him to sleep on the
- 9:54couch. She's on my side.
- 9:56She's like, kick him out, you know, by the way you got to
- 9:59sleep. Don't listen.
- 10:00Your sleep counts too. If anyone has a CPAP company or
- 10:06does marketing for one and would like to sponsor somebody, reach
- 10:09out to me. Using their CPAP anymore?
- 10:11Sure, gotta buy the tubes in one.
- 10:13Yeah, I'm a cheap Mastard, so if we can do some marketing, I'm
- 10:17in. Actually, in tubes, it's just
- 10:19the machines, right? Yeah, the machine clean.
- 10:21I got a couple extra tubes about.
- 10:22Oh nice, you could get the machine.
- 10:25Let's go. I got you.
- 10:26Let's go. Look at us figuring it out
- 10:28anyways. Back-to-back to shooting indoor.
- 10:31Pretty such old man land right now.
- 10:33Oh. Yeah.
- 10:35Yeah, you know, bring it back around.
- 10:36We got one hour to cover so many things, so many, so many topics.
- 10:40Any other thoughts on indoor shooting?
- 10:46Did you find it fun? You know what, you know what it
- 10:49felt like, You know what it felt like because it's a simple task
- 10:57from 1:00. There's a fatigue factor if
- 10:58you're not shooting a bunch, right?
- 10:59So there's a I'm dude, I'm shooting the pound is that I'm
- 11:03shooting and I'm spread across like too many hobbies.
- 11:06So I'll shoot like a couple arrows, you know, throughout the
- 11:09week. I'm not sitting there in a
- 11:11session in full honest transparency, shooting 30
- 11:13arrows. So I started off like X1010 or
- 11:18it's X109 or something like that.
- 11:19And then it was like 10 fairly, fairly good.
- 11:22But then shoulder started to wear down.
- 11:25Yeah, got tired, right. So like that's a factor, just
- 11:30shooting conditioning, which is not the same as a run, like
- 11:34cardio, normal cardio. And then it kind of gave me
- 11:39vibes of just sitting at the free throw line shooting.
- 11:42It's a free throw is super simple, but like add a little
- 11:47bit of pressure, add a little bit of put it on the line.
- 11:50And that's kind of what I like about it too, because it keeps
- 11:53you in that. It keeps you in that clutch
- 11:56mode, right? Because I feel like a lot of
- 11:58times when we hunt, we shoot at this big bell and there's no
- 12:01consequences because even if you're off, you're still you're
- 12:03not going to lose an arrow. So if you never dial down to
- 12:07something that small where though that little bit, that
- 12:11inch off, you know, or really millimeters off changes the
- 12:15dynamic of the score, may maybe makes you lose.
- 12:18I think we that's something that we may not get right a lot.
- 12:21And just the bow hunting community.
- 12:24What? Ended.
- 12:25Very much so too. That is, you know, we talk about
- 12:29a a good hunting shot and a good hunting shots the size of like
- 12:34could be a dinner plate decide depending on the animal could be
- 12:37a size of a Turkey dinner plate down to like maybe a dessert
- 12:41plate. But that's the size of the
- 12:43entire reef that's out to the 6th and indoor target.
- 12:49And so I think it brings back into reality, like if you want
- 12:53to really hone in, you know, you go hunting and you think, oh
- 12:56God, 20 yard shots can be a chip shot on an animal.
- 12:59You might have a great hunting shot.
- 13:02Great. It sounds easy when you're
- 13:04hunting an animal. But then are you really taking
- 13:07seriously what it means to make a good 20 yard shot?
- 13:12Because you do indoor and you realize, granted, all of those
- 13:16you shot are great shots if it were on an animal.
- 13:19But do you want to better your chances of always making that
- 13:24type of shot in an animal Sitting there and shooting 30
- 13:27arrows in a row at just 20 yards that we all call chip shot.
- 13:32It's going to really make you realize, OK, now I can be better
- 13:36or should be better and eventually will be better at
- 13:39increasing odds of always making that good chip shot, 20 yard
- 13:43shot. So I just think that's an
- 13:45interesting, I call it, it humbles you going indoor.
- 13:49I straight up just quit after round 6 was like this sucks.
- 13:54I'm just all over that little, you know, pie plate size, you
- 14:00know? Sorry for anybody who rolls
- 14:03their eyes and tired of hearing about jiu jitsu, but like it's
- 14:06the why I why I'm so big on you should get into a fight in a
- 14:12controlled area because like getting used to like that.
- 14:16Oh my God, my heart just went from zero to 1000.
- 14:19But now, like my hands ain't working right and I still got to
- 14:22somehow perform. It's the same thing that's
- 14:25happening on that line. Now you're the last person
- 14:28shooting because maybe you know, you're pulling from a quiver
- 14:31when everybody's pulling out of the thing.
- 14:32So now you got one more arrow to fly and everybody is waiting for
- 14:35you to finish. So they're all looking at you
- 14:37before they can go and you know, clear and walk down.
- 14:40All of that is so good to train your nervous system so you don't
- 14:44just block out. I'm kind of fortunate because I
- 14:47for the last 10 years I've been in a, a spot where I can hunt
- 14:51literally every day. But if you're in a place where
- 14:54you have to wait a season, you're going to get dull to that
- 14:58like to that adrenaline dump and it's going to be weird for you
- 15:01to fill it again. I, I may see, I may come to full
- 15:05draw on probably 10 plus axis deer at least per year and
- 15:12double that in pigs per year, right?
- 15:14Like, and I still get, you know, I'll still feel that from zero
- 15:18to 100. So imagine, I can't imagine
- 15:20having to wait a whole another year to try it again.
- 15:23That's crazy. That's crazy to me.
- 15:26Yeah. Dude that's a good point.
- 15:28That is a unique part about Hawaii.
- 15:31It's just the ability to hunt the goats, pigs or access year
- 15:36round in different terrains, different types of animals that
- 15:41is unique to that location. I mean, a lot of places you can
- 15:45hunt pigs year round, but that's usually about it.
- 15:49Them and coyotes. So for to have several things
- 15:53pretty cool. You know that that that is a
- 15:55cool part about Hawaii. And one thing I was wondering
- 15:59when we were out there that I would be curious to know is are
- 16:04there any like predators? Are there coyotes?
- 16:08Are there mountain lions, Bobcats?
- 16:11Nothing, nothing. No, that's so.
- 16:12Crazy. That's about it.
- 16:14That's as predatory as it gets. Is is pigs?
- 16:16Wow. And I guess.
- 16:17Maybe the like you said, there was some wild dogs or dogs that
- 16:21people would have sometimes. Yeah, maybe they'll.
- 16:23Yeah, but that's about it. Yeah.
- 16:25Yeah. So no, you're not dealing with
- 16:27Cougars you're not dealing with. Garbage.
- 16:29Yeah. That's it.
- 16:31That's crazy. Dude, you know what's kind of
- 16:33wild? So that goat I shot, I'm sure I
- 16:35told you when we were out there, but he had actually been shot
- 16:39before in the like upper back. He had a friggin BIG2 blade
- 16:44monster so. Yeah.
- 16:45It was all healed up like he would have been good to go.
- 16:47It didn't have hair yet, but it was sealed up like a scab and he
- 16:50was ready to RIP. But you could tell you've been
- 16:52shot right through the top of the back and it's not.
- 16:54Like he stayed in bed rest. Like we if we had procedure we
- 16:57would stay in bedded. He didn't stay in bedded and
- 17:00follow some doctor's orders. He's still running around and
- 17:03healing. I freaking loved goat hunting.
- 17:07I loved it. I love the terrain.
- 17:09I love how gnarly it was and just like everything's in
- 17:15prickers and nasty is super steep is just like it was
- 17:19gnarly. I mean it was good tough
- 17:21terrain, tough animals to hunt and that's that I love that kind
- 17:25of hunting. I love a good luxurious hunt
- 17:27too, but I really like those ones where you got to grind it
- 17:29out and you know, we're going back to Hawaii this year.
- 17:32For the Axis hunt. There's three spots left.
- 17:35hooveshornshideaways.com. If you want to get the last
- 17:38three spots. It may be sold by the time this
- 17:40is out, but we were thinking actually about staying another
- 17:44week and doing the goats again in the same spot.
- 17:48I'll be up there in the next two weeks.
- 17:51If I get cleared the MRI I will be back up there shooting the
- 17:56last couple Easton 5 point O's that I got left in my quick.
- 18:02Yeah, I've. Already I've game planned and
- 18:04I've already, you know, one also, we probably beat this to a
- 18:08dead horse. So like between potting or or
- 18:11videos or whatnot, like I've all of this.
- 18:13So I was like at the start of it's called a.
- 18:16Health. Journey when I made it out to
- 18:21Hawaii and that was probably like my heaviest ever in my
- 18:25whole. So you're ready?
- 18:26To test yourself again and. We've been doing it through the
- 18:29last few hunts we've been on and even like Ted's noticed it and
- 18:33whatnot. Like my endurance level, my, you
- 18:36know, stamina. And so I'm like in my head, I'm
- 18:41like, all right, Nope. I do know where I would like,
- 18:45you know, potentially to go and and sit and wait them out like
- 18:49we did this past trip. But also I'm like at least a
- 18:53couple times because I'm like, in my head, I'm like this kind
- 18:55of work. I saw so many of them hanging
- 18:57out up there and that was another like 80 plus yards.
- 18:59I needed to go up higher and it turns into like rock climbing at
- 19:02that point in like you can't, can't go up.
- 19:05So I'm like, now I got this game plan like I'm going to start
- 19:07from the long point of the the mountain.
- 19:10I'm going to side hill all the way up the ridges all the way to
- 19:14the top and then come down at them so that like I'm out there
- 19:18and they're like, you know where we saw them when we were leaving
- 19:20that final day and I was like, F you goats.
- 19:23They're like literally skylined on the top.
- 19:26And I'm like, Nope, I'm going to start by morning up there with
- 19:30the goats at the very top. So that's always.
- 19:33Been my game plan, yeah. But I couldn't like the way we
- 19:36came in. Also couldn't.
- 19:39I don't even know am I like strength now if I could do it
- 19:43just literally because of the height portion the Ridge I took.
- 19:45You guys to. Well, from there we would cross
- 19:49to the. This would be.
- 19:51To the South, OK. Yeah, 'cause you can get all the
- 19:54way that Ridge, if you just follow that up, you can go
- 19:57straight all the way up to that fence line.
- 19:58The problem? Is she doesn't have the cojones
- 20:00for that? It is sketchy.
- 20:02It's sketchy. When you follow that one, I
- 20:05think we went there one day and I literally I could have still
- 20:12kept going quite a ways if not all the way.
- 20:15Like height wise climbing wasn't going to be the issue.
- 20:19It was just like I looked down once and then say.
- 20:26She, she, she, she's cracking me up right now because she gets
- 20:31real sketched out of like steep stuff or heights.
- 20:33So I'm like she, she's gonna be, I don't know.
- 20:37I don't know. She's starting from the she
- 20:38might be talking of gassing herself up.
- 20:41I I know where you wanna go. It's gonna be steep, though.
- 20:43Still, it's gonna be as deep as a master, but I don't think.
- 20:46It'll be sheer on either. See to the.
- 20:50Top it will be sure on either side, but the walk up I don't
- 20:53think will be yeah so but where we went the majority of the time
- 20:58I call it to the right like from that that place we walked and
- 21:02stomped that it's like that would be.
- 21:04South this way. Yeah, right.
- 21:06S yes, South. And I don't do northwest SE, I
- 21:11do left, right on the corner of the intersection where the stop
- 21:14sign in the yellow building. I got to pause you.
- 21:16There because we we come from the same active duty place and
- 21:20you telling me you don't do carnal directions that's crazy
- 21:25that's why you've. Never been.
- 21:27Good at them. I try my hardest to get better
- 21:30at them and they just never come to me.
- 21:33I'm like did. They smoke you in OCS.
- 21:35They had they they did it never come up.
- 21:37Yeah. And that really?
- 21:38I guess came up more. We just dealt with MOW boards a
- 21:41lot. As long as I could solve a MOW
- 21:42board I was fine. Which props on.
- 21:44That that was a hard props on that a MOW board.
- 21:48Is. Have you ever heard of a MOW
- 21:51board? No, it's short for maneuvering
- 21:54boards. Right?
- 21:56I don't. I don't want to bore everybody
- 21:57with this. Essentially it's a way to tell
- 22:00which way aircraft are going, ships are going or whatever
- 22:03without like radar. So you take a you can visually
- 22:06tell where they're at and you get a bearing to them and
- 22:09overtime you observe them every like 3 minutes or 5 minutes and
- 22:14based off of that you can tell speed.
- 22:16And direction, you'll be able to say it's like a math problem on
- 22:20the echoed the F cat like your standardized testing like in 7
- 22:25minutes at a speed of 25 knots, this ship is traveling due N at
- 22:31295 degrees or whatever. Where will they be in 7 minutes?
- 22:35And then it turns. Into trig, right?
- 22:37Because now you, because you get their relative bearing and you
- 22:40know you're true. You know your course.
- 22:42So based off of that, you can tell with this angle is which
- 22:46tells you where they're at. And then you can develop their
- 22:48course, their speed and then their closest point of approach.
- 22:51So you don't hit. Then they throw in there, you
- 22:53got to make a decision on which way to turn because they're
- 22:56going to hit you. And then another ship is coming.
- 22:58Anyways, we might have to edit this out.
- 22:59We might have lost. I love it.
- 23:05I love it's very. Easy and hard math at the same
- 23:09time. Like because if you it's easy
- 23:11math in a way, but if you mess one step up within the it's
- 23:15wrong. And then you have to remember
- 23:18rules of the road, who gets to stay, who keeps the OK?
- 23:20We're in a head on situation, who's the stand on vessel, who
- 23:24is the giveaway vessel? We're in a crossing, we're in a
- 23:26overtaking and enough. Nerd Talk.
- 23:28Wow, that was exciting. It was riveting.
- 23:33Especially when. I'm already tired.
- 23:36I'm tired, ball back in the. Old days if like in a.
- 23:41The. Blinking radar and you get a
- 23:43little blip. Blink green.
- 23:45Blink this blue. Blue.
- 23:47Yes, blue. My like the mow board is
- 23:50literally just like OK here's 1 bloop and I need to find this
- 23:54bloop in 7 minutes. Sounds fun, You know those?
- 23:58World War 2 vets that were dog fighting like oh geez bro yeah,
- 24:01gangsters back then. To do it like that fast, because
- 24:04that was the only way they could do it.
- 24:06And come up with a firing solution on the moving vessel
- 24:09and shoot a torpedo at them. All of them working at it at the
- 24:13same time. Like props to all of them.
- 24:16That's how wars were really won. Like, good on you, soldier.
- 24:19American. Gangster.
- 24:20That's why we are back-to-back World War champs.
- 24:23Let's go, let's go. Shout out to.
- 24:27Denzel Denzel Great movie. Honestly, I'd say Pete Denzel.
- 24:32This portion of the podcast is sponsored by the US Navy.
- 24:37Head into your local recruiting office and give them a talk.
- 24:41The PDH 10 say yeah. You get no.
- 24:46Bones on that. Teambdusnavy.com.
- 24:52Anyways, we were talking about all of that because I don't go
- 24:55north from South. If you go South, there's a
- 25:00ridgeline that it's really when you're in there, it's like a
- 25:02giant bowl, you know. And so I wouldn't be on the
- 25:06right side of the bowl. Like if you're looking into the
- 25:09bowl and there's like a jungle like section that they come down
- 25:14during the middle of the day too.
- 25:16And I'm like, but they're not there all day.
- 25:19They go out from there, disperse and feed and climb up through
- 25:22the rocks. But that section above the tree
- 25:24line that gets real rocky is not like the fingers side that you
- 25:30go up. There are no fingers.
- 25:33It's just fingers. I mean, like Ridge lines that go
- 25:37up to the top skyline. They're just like rocky cliffs
- 25:41and you gonna climb. That we.
- 25:43Climbed a couple y'all crazy and I was like no, I literally at
- 25:47one point finally reached the point where like I couldn't even
- 25:50set my bow up to reach anymore. So it's like there's nothing.
- 25:55I would be free climbing at that point.
- 25:57Just putting my foot into something and hoping that lava
- 26:00rock is going to hold up while I pull myself up to the top.
- 26:03You would have been a. Real life.
- 26:04Alex Honnold. Yeah.
- 26:06You would have seen me fall what I'm.
- 26:07Gonna need y'all to do is not come to my home and die.
- 26:10Yeah, don't do those rocks. The the most nimble.
- 26:14I'm telling you people who I would say the most, some of the
- 26:18most nimble people I know. I've watched them like go for
- 26:21some slides and but by the grace I got like, yeah, so like just
- 26:28keep this dude tame a little bit.
- 26:31He's the one you have to worry about, that's what I'm saying.
- 26:33Keep him tamed a little bit. He.
- 26:36Knows too like his coordination. Then we're back to couples
- 26:41therapy. Seems like he's like you.
- 26:45Better not. He'll be.
- 26:47He'll be, you know, shooting a business text and and fill it a
- 26:51short while. He's walking down a ridgeline
- 26:54that, you know, drops off to a Cliff on one side and just la de
- 26:58da. And then he'll slip out from his
- 27:00feet and I'll yell and be like, calm down back there.
- 27:02I'm like, you literally almost just fell to your desk and he's
- 27:05just like calm down. So no, so I'm I'm opted out of
- 27:10that direction. But if you start from the very
- 27:13bottom, there's a long way up and it's slow and steady.
- 27:20But that's the way I want to go up and basically just like work
- 27:24the whole, yeah. 'Cause when you go my Ridge,
- 27:27what what sucks is when you come back down, there's some spots
- 27:29where you have to jump down like you can't, just like you can't
- 27:33sit on your butt and like your foot reach.
- 27:35So you have to just say, OK, I could see death, death, but this
- 27:39pad is about 2-3 feet like you. You just have to allow your feet
- 27:44to come off the ground for a second to get back down.
- 27:46Yes, Yeah, I. Do that stuff in like Arizona in
- 27:49like a wash where you know, I'm the lowest of low.
- 27:54So that 6 foot little drop off this rock in the wash is like,
- 27:58and I can't fall to my death on either side.
- 28:01Like there was one time this last trip in Arizona that James
- 28:05picked this route down. Basically a figure very similar
- 28:09to the one we went up one just like where you go up and we went
- 28:14down another one very similar to that.
- 28:16And it gets to like, it would look almost like the lava rock,
- 28:20like dark, dark Gray, black. But it was like Shaily, like
- 28:24sand and rock. And he's like, this is the last
- 28:28deep section. It's fine.
- 28:29Just come down. And I watch him go down it and
- 28:31I'm like, here's the ground. And here's James.
- 28:35Like nothing about this looks even remotely possible.
- 28:40I don't even know how your boots are gripping the ground at this
- 28:43point. And I had to, I call it subway
- 28:48surfing the game. I go subway surfing a lot in
- 28:51Arizona because if it's too steep, I just get down squat.
- 28:56And I use my legs to like slide down.
- 28:59And then I'll just start shimmying with my feet if I stop
- 29:02moving and just keep going some more.
- 29:05But it's easier to do that when you don't see death on either
- 29:08side of feet. And now was the time we went up
- 29:11your direction. I was like, he sent me a picture
- 29:14and he's just like sitting down straddling either side of the
- 29:17Ridge and like, so that's the Ridge this wide up there.
- 29:21Like ain't no way. I mean do it that.
- 29:24Picture up there in the corner y'all can't see it says it all
- 29:27though. That's death all around him,
- 29:30right? Cliffhanger.
- 29:33Cliff. But all of that say when we go,
- 29:38I've I've game planned like being a little bit stronger and
- 29:42having some more endurance of like I will make sure I'm
- 29:45leaving with a goat this. Time.
- 29:48And I've got plenty midway up too.
- 29:50Oh yeah. You know, I shot mine.
- 29:52I would, I would say, well, we actually both shot 1.
- 29:54Hers just went somewhere unrecoverable.
- 29:56But yeah, it was about I would say it was like midway found a
- 30:00pocket and I would I would have been more than down to go up to
- 30:04the higher country too. But she was just that was too
- 30:08steep is testing her limits. But nonetheless, it it worked.
- 30:11The same plan would work again. But I did see some I did see
- 30:16some real mature goats up there and but the one I shot ended up
- 30:19being quite nice. He was the nicest in a group of
- 30:22about probably about 20. There was 1.
- 30:26Whopper up there or? You know, you've seen told us
- 30:29about showing pictures of have. I'm like, now we're going to go
- 30:32where the whoppers are. Yeah.
- 30:34Though, I mean, you're not going to want to eat as though I
- 30:36guarantee that. Yeah, yeah, I like struggled
- 30:39through every one of those decent sized coats.
- 30:41Yeah, it's it's miserable. The nannies taste like just.
- 30:44You just make. Red meat like that.
- 30:46They're but the Billy goats bro. Oh my God.
- 30:49Oh. Geez.
- 30:50Oh, Heath Marsha, like the Billy.
- 30:52Goats taste so much worse than the they're running.
- 30:54Up yeah, I got some footage of like some wild stuff going on
- 30:59with them goats, like brutal. They are brutal like.
- 31:05Yeah, so. They they their tests are up.
- 31:07Their testosterone is just so freaking high and they just get
- 31:11I mean, and they're peeing on themselves constantly and it's
- 31:14just, they're just marinating themselves and stink.
- 31:16Yeah, they. Stink.
- 31:18Yeah, you. Can't, you can wrap the meat up
- 31:20and like double bag it like butcher paper, all of that.
- 31:24You're sometimes like if they're really read it up, you're going
- 31:27to smell it through that. They're like, you know how like
- 31:30a a big nasty pig is. That's that's what the goat
- 31:33smoke. Yeah, it's just I'll shoot.
- 31:35I'll take a nanny now any day. Yeah, I need one with.
- 31:39I need one with thorn. You need.
- 31:41One with some Joe Rio, yeah. I do any, you know any little 1
- 31:47though? But I do want to go all the way
- 31:48to the top just because you got to touch.
- 31:50You got to touch the fence. We'll see.
- 31:51What happens? We'll see what happens.
- 31:53I'm going to. Make it up there.
- 31:55So we'll see the only. Thing about can't say too much,
- 32:01you know, but yeah, don't. Don't give up.
- 32:04Don't hello. Don't spot numbers.
- 32:06Don't you dare. I got.
- 32:07I got to go. Back there now, not leave.
- 32:10In all good conscience, my vehicle where it needed to be
- 32:13left to go to cover a good portion of the hike in the dark.
- 32:18Lizzie because of. Things just.
- 32:22Just get the insurance, yeah, on the rental.
- 32:25There's a reason, you know, they they factor that in.
- 32:28OK, get the insurance on the vehicle.
- 32:30You have to get the. Insurance make sure you get.
- 32:32The insurance. That was the sole thing keeping
- 32:37me slash, I think, from having to park where you'd have to
- 32:41park, get the. Insurance and then send it and
- 32:44if you guys come back down and the vehicle is jacked up or even
- 32:48gone, call me and I'll make sure you get a ride get another
- 32:52vehicle like exactly if somebody steals the vehicle, I mean it's
- 32:56they didn't steal your vehicle. It is what it.
- 32:58Is you know is that. Unethical, you remember.
- 33:01That TV show back in the day called like what was it called
- 33:05trap car or something where they car bank car.
- 33:08That's right. They would leave keys in the car
- 33:11with the door open and people would hop in to steal the car
- 33:15and it's all on film. But as soon as they would hop in
- 33:18and drive off the lock, they it would the car would shut off and
- 33:21it's locked. So then the cop, they would
- 33:24start I forgetting out and cops would pull up on them and oh, it
- 33:27was great. Oh.
- 33:29Yeah, that was on the free. That was the free channel days.
- 33:31Yeah, yeah, 100. Percent and and then, like you
- 33:34had America's most wanting cops. It was just a wild era of TV.
- 33:38But that you know, cops is back on now.
- 33:42I don't know about bait car. I'm not sure bait car is on, but
- 33:46that was good stuff. But OK, so all right, we we also
- 33:52shot outdoor. We shot at room bowel archery
- 33:55range in Balboa Park your first time there.
- 33:58So let's go. You shot this trip at
- 34:00Performance Archery Indoor. You've shot at Morley Field
- 34:05Range. What'd you think of Morley
- 34:07Field? Morley.
- 34:08Was cool because it looked like somebody that range gave me the
- 34:13vibe that somebody looked at a plot of land and said this would
- 34:16be smart for a range, right? Not like it.
- 34:19There was some thought, there was some thought put into it.
- 34:22It was actually in a bowl. So it was a natural like
- 34:25windbreak and then there was trees all around.
- 34:27So while it's not as good as being a performance archery to,
- 34:30you know, just dial everything with no wind, but it was about
- 34:34as close as you can get at a range shooting at my home range,
- 34:39right? I mean, you windy all day.
- 34:42The YPO range, you got to catch it at a certain time.
- 34:45I'm not going to give the certain time because I would
- 34:47like to have some time to be able to shoot.
- 34:50But there is a spots that you can slide into at that range
- 34:54where it it's the same. But that one seems well thought
- 34:57out. There's lights above.
- 34:58So if you want to looks like they do like a Friday night
- 35:01light shoot or something like that.
- 35:03It looks like this. These like archery places were
- 35:09like created by people who actually love archery And like
- 35:13they didn't, I don't know, like where we're at in Hawaii.
- 35:16It's almost like somebody's like, huh, take this little
- 35:18piece, you know, take this little piece and get out of my
- 35:20face for your little archery hobby.
- 35:22You know what I mean? Whereas it looks like somehow
- 35:25y'all out here got some prime real estate.
- 35:27I think a lot. Of the ranges or of those two
- 35:29specifically, Morley and Rube Powell, I think have just been
- 35:33there a long, long time. So that's, I almost think they
- 35:37swooped up the real estate. Yeah.
- 35:40So I think they swooped up the real estate or had leases to it
- 35:43before it, you know, maybe got so condensed and expensive.
- 35:47But I will say this, that one range that we shot that we
- 35:50filmed with the custom 3D targets, I had a great time
- 35:53there. That's like goaded.
- 35:54For me, that's my favorite of all time.
- 35:56That range I loved. It the targets are cool, the
- 35:59terrain is cool. I loved it.
- 36:02I had a great time shooting that day.
- 36:04Fun little contest. But then today we shot at Rube
- 36:07Powell. So it was your first time there.
- 36:11What did you think of that spot? It's because it's quite a bit
- 36:13different than Morley. Morley's flat and you just have
- 36:1610 to 100 yards. This place is like hills and
- 36:19mountains, and you're walking around and different target
- 36:23sets. Like what did you kind of think
- 36:24of like disc? Golf vibes, I'm a fan.
- 36:28I prefer that's if I if I have to choose somewhere to shoot,
- 36:31that's that is my like a plus answer right there.
- 36:36That's why I like Kapolei over in Hawaii because you get to
- 36:39walk around. Now it's not as windy and twisty
- 36:41as Rue Powell, but yeah, I'm a fan.
- 36:46The now we'll sketchy though. I think he's next to a highway,
- 36:49but yeah, there's less than that's next to the Interstate.
- 36:52I'm like y'all, all these cars are trusting that when I put my
- 36:56bow back together, I didn't miss tightening down the screw right
- 36:59now and not thinning the arrow. So that is kind.
- 37:02Of crazy, like it's been in that same location.
- 37:06I mean, I've been shooting there since probably 2004, 2005 and
- 37:11it's been there like I told you, I'm pretty sure since the 40s.
- 37:15And so has the that highway. That freeway has been there a
- 37:19long time too. And to my knowledge, I mean I
- 37:22don't believe an arrow has ever like hit a car or anything.
- 37:26Just jinxed. It Isn't that crazy though.
- 37:28I mean they are the. Likelihoods though that that has
- 37:31never happened is I think. It's been sent over there.
- 37:34I think it just may have not made contact.
- 37:36So last year, yeah, kind of crazy.
- 37:38I had to replace my windshield. Heading West, like almost
- 37:40towards the range and I thought a rock hit my windshield.
- 37:44So I go and I drop my, I drop my vehicle off heading to work or
- 37:48whatever, and I go and check my phone when I come out of work
- 37:51and it is blown up in messages from Safelite, they're like,
- 37:55hey, Mr. Thompson, hey, could you call us back?
- 37:56It's an emergency. They call, I call them back.
- 37:59They're like there was a bullet in your windshield, a freaking
- 38:03bullet in my windshield. So I don't know if it like
- 38:07skipped off the ground or what, but the top frame kind of like
- 38:10where that front, my front camera sensor is, it was lodged
- 38:14in there. So bro, bro, they're like they
- 38:17gave it to me, bagged up for police report and everything.
- 38:20I don't think somebody shot, just a random one, but I think
- 38:22it just kind of like it was in the road maybe and skipped
- 38:25somebody at some point discharged around on the H1 and
- 38:29I was heading West. I was like, Oh my God, that's
- 38:31an. Insane story dead center.
- 38:35High, yeah. Yeah, Dang, that that, well,
- 38:38blessing you didn't come through the windshield #1 and #2 at
- 38:42least now you have some St. credibility to say you've been
- 38:45in a drive by. Sort of, you know what I mean?
- 38:47I don't you. Know what?
- 38:48But. You.
- 38:49Were I don't know if. You're driving by this.
- 38:52I don't know if I want that streak because I you know what I
- 38:56mean? I try to throw people off with
- 38:58the privileged bow hunter name. So like I I I don't know if I
- 39:01want to regress to drive by shree Craigslist.
- 39:05Yeah. You know, well, plus like, I
- 39:08don't know if it counts. Well.
- 39:13I also like if you my credit score.
- 39:15Just dropped out. Yeah, she had.
- 39:17Dogs are barking, birds are chirping, white picket fence,
- 39:19but if. You think about it, right?
- 39:21Like the logistics of it, I don't know like it can, it can't
- 39:26be a drive by if it's opposite like 'cause like.
- 39:29He did the. Driving by, not the shooting.
- 39:32So it's like, you know. What he?
- 39:35He got that's crazy. So wait a minute, let let me try
- 39:38to I got to try to figure this situation out.
- 39:41He hit me. With you're saying?
- 39:42There was a that. Was there a gun range nearby?
- 39:45No gun range. Over there, there's nothing.
- 39:46No houses. Like what's around?
- 39:48Is it a rural area? Like this is so great, so you.
- 39:51Remember heading out to Kapole H1 W right to the right, you got
- 39:55and got those heels. And if you pay, there's like
- 39:58some, there's some cattle up there.
- 40:00That's that's it, that's it, That's it.
- 40:04We're past. We're talking, we're past.
- 40:05Why Kelly? We're past the Eva exit that's.
- 40:09Crazy, dude. Wow.
- 40:11Well, at least now that I'm happy, you're all good because I
- 40:13could have been bad, but I do it.
- 40:15It is crazy because like you wonder if I'm charged a
- 40:18discharge bullet could have just been like you said, maybe just
- 40:21sitting on the road and someone off their tire, off their tire
- 40:24like a rock. But then that probably wouldn't
- 40:27work because it wouldn't have probably hit like it would have
- 40:31hit sideways or something most likely or backwards like I don't
- 40:34know. And then I don't know if it
- 40:35would lodge in the windshield like a shout out to.
- 40:38Shout out to. Safelite shout.
- 40:40Out to Elon, though, Elon building the the glass that, you
- 40:44know, the glass that could protect the president,
- 40:46apparently, Yeah, yeah. True facts.
- 40:48So OK, so we shot indoor and then we shot today at Rubell.
- 40:53So today we did some pretty fun challenges.
- 40:56By the way, this video is going to be on a Privilege Bow Hunter
- 41:00channel, so if you guys want to see it pop over to Privilege Bow
- 41:03Hunter, be sure to smash the subscribe button, hit
- 41:06privilegebowhunter.com and watch the video.
- 41:09Drop a comment if you're watching it right now to let us
- 41:14know what you think. And there are some questions for
- 41:16the audience in there as well. But we did quite a bit of
- 41:19unmarked today and I wouldn't say either of us did stellar.
- 41:24I'll say we did. I did OK.
- 41:26I think we we could have done better.
- 41:29There's room for improvement, but we're going to stay
- 41:32positive. Yes, I'd say that.
- 41:33Pretty. I mean the most you're ever off
- 41:35was only on one and it was by both marked like 10 yards off on
- 41:40a small target. That was the first one.
- 41:42Aside. From that it was usually you
- 41:44were both off by only 5 or less. That's why these.
- 41:46Folks who do unmarked or just goaded, bro, in my opinion,
- 41:49that's like my favorite to watch because man, you got to be a
- 41:53good guesser. And then like the the other part
- 41:57of it is in your mind when you got that you need to stick with
- 42:02your yardage, like don't say 40 and then I'm going to hold high
- 42:05with my 40 Pi. Like if you said 40, just just
- 42:08stick with it. Yeah, so good point.
- 42:12We, you know, I used to shoot a lot of unmarked, but because
- 42:17that's how even the local shoots used to do it as they would all
- 42:20be unmarked. So we shot unmarked all the time
- 42:23and then there became a time where it just wasn't a thing
- 42:26we're doing anymore. Like all of them switched to
- 42:28range finders, which makes sense.
- 42:30Like a lot of people want to go to practice for hunting and when
- 42:32you're hunting, you have a range Finder.
- 42:34So like it makes sense. But for practicing unmarked, you
- 42:40know, if I was ever to go start competing in unmarked for a
- 42:43year, like I would have to spend quite a bit of time practicing
- 42:47because right now I'm not good enough.
- 42:49Like it's hard. It's a, it's a, it's a skill,
- 42:51bro. Like it's one of those things
- 42:53you got to, it's a muscle you have to work, you know, just
- 42:56like anything else. But I I agree with you.
- 42:58I think it's so impressive when guys are or girls can go out
- 43:02there and go. I think it's like a strong 37.
- 43:06That's how they do a lot of times they'll be like, you know,
- 43:08I think it's like a strong 37. So I'm going to shoot for 38 and
- 43:15it could be 40. But it like they always like
- 43:17sort of bracket it and then try to find it.
- 43:19It's like a whole freaking problem.
- 43:21It's just cool. Yeah.
- 43:24You need to, I think it, I mean, it's what it, what it boils down
- 43:28to kind of what we did over these last couple days is almost
- 43:32like the MMA of the archery world, right?
- 43:34You, you did some target style stuff.
- 43:36You, you like. Good point.
- 43:38You got to be. Able to do it.
- 43:39All right, somebody grabs you, What are you going to do?
- 43:41Somebody is just striking with you, what are you going to do?
- 43:43And then here, just not, in my opinion, not ducking any smoke,
- 43:47like if we're going to, OK, we're going to step on this
- 43:49line, then let's step on this line.
- 43:52Look yourself. On the face and get better.
- 43:53We need to get better. All right?
- 43:54Now we're outside and now we're guessing.
- 43:56Well, guess better, nerd. Like the day, dude.
- 44:01I've always said that about hunting specifically that I
- 44:04think I think one of the keys to being a good, consistently
- 44:10successful hunter. So that's what's always most
- 44:13impressive to me is when hunters are consistent 6 like often, you
- 44:17know what I mean? Like a high percentage of the
- 44:19time. And to do that, I believe it
- 44:22helps a ton to be a very diverse, well-rounded hunter.
- 44:26Be like, OK, I'm, I'm competent and good at glassing.
- 44:31I feel comfortable in my spot and stock skills and using the
- 44:34wind being quiet. But I also can go sit for 12
- 44:37hours in a tree stand or I know how to build a pop up, you know,
- 44:41do a pop up blind or build my own ground blind like I'm or
- 44:45still hunting. Like the more skills that you
- 44:48can get proficient at hunting. All that does is help you in
- 44:54your toolkit. So when you go hunt some terrain
- 44:57that maybe you weren't really expecting, say you're thinking
- 45:01you're going to hunt flat desert and you're thinking, OK, I'll go
- 45:03out there and spot and stalk. But then you get there and all
- 45:05the animals are hanging out in timber.
- 45:07You're like, OK, well, luckily I brought a tree stand.
- 45:11I know how to hunt that way. Or I'll still hunt through it or
- 45:14sit a trail. Like, you know what I'm saying?
- 45:17Sweet. Road hunting or Rd.
- 45:19Hunting, whatever. But I think like being more
- 45:22diverse. We're just playing.
- 45:24We're just playing. But being being more diverse is
- 45:27so much better than just saying like this is is the only way to
- 45:31skin a cat. And that's true in hunting and
- 45:33an archery and MMA. Like I think that's why MMA has
- 45:38probably become so popular over, you know, things like Bach.
- 45:41I mean, people still, there's still obviously an audience
- 45:44boxing, but not in comparison, you know what I mean?
- 45:47So I think you're right. I think being well-rounded,
- 45:51being good at multiple things, especially if they're in the
- 45:54same niche, you're just becoming more well-rounded in the knee.
- 45:59You just got to be. OK, with like going through that
- 46:01time period of just not being good and established.
- 46:05I feel like some people, I'm coming from a unique perspective
- 46:08because I, I didn't start this as a child, right?
- 46:11Like dad didn't hand me a bow. I started this as an adult,
- 46:15right? So part of the reason why I love
- 46:17a couple archery range so much is John and Leslie were there
- 46:20when my first arrows. They watched me destroy 3 arrows
- 46:23in a row and they were like brother I'm here.
- 46:28You know that's insane. Like be OK with looking like a
- 46:32fool. Like be figure out whatever you
- 46:35need to do whatever is holding you back.
- 46:37Not turn this into some weird therapy session, but whatever
- 46:40that doesn't allow you to try something new because you don't
- 46:42want to look dumb at it. Bro just freaking just go.
- 46:46Fact. Just go dude.
- 46:48I love that I got AI. Got a question for y'all though
- 46:51because I didn't stir the pot on on 3 platforms right now.
- 46:56Two of them are like they're still arguing.
- 46:58They're arguing to this moment. Should Dun Dun Dun crossbows be
- 47:04allowed and archery see go quick from.
- 47:09The hip. Now firstly I'll say that like
- 47:12this isn't really as pressing of an issue where we're from than
- 47:17it is like back East. It's not really a thing.
- 47:22Like I mean it is some but for the most part western states
- 47:25like people can only hunt with a crossbow if they have like a
- 47:28doctor's note. Not during archery season.
- 47:31Typically in states where we frequent, but I know back east a
- 47:35lot in whitetail states they have a lot of times crossbow is
- 47:40in archery season. My thought on it has always sort
- 47:43of been that I think you should only be able to use a crossbow
- 47:47during archery season if you have an injury note like you're
- 47:51in in unable to shoot a compound bow or a recurve or Longbow.
- 47:56Or if you want to hunt with a crossbow, I think it makes more
- 48:00sense to lump it in with muzzle loader season, and I'll tell you
- 48:03why. I personally believe that a
- 48:06crossbow is a more parallel or equal weapon to a muzzle loader
- 48:15than it is to a a bow, in my opinion.
- 48:18So to me, I don't think crossbows should be illegal to
- 48:20hunt with. I think they just should put it
- 48:23in a different season or I'm totally fine if people have a
- 48:28blown out shoulder, you know what I mean?
- 48:30Like I'm I'm fine with that, totally fine with and I think
- 48:33that's cool, but to just lump it as a bow when people who look, a
- 48:40compound bow is much easier to shoot than a recurve or a
- 48:42Longbow, no doubt about it. But I could not hand my compound
- 48:46bow to somebody I just meet on the street.
- 48:50Even if they're my same size, it can pull it back and they're
- 48:53not. They are not going to be able to
- 48:55shoot it proficiently for at least, let's say a week if they
- 48:59were practicing every single day.
- 49:01And the Todas? Are going to be cooked before
- 49:02they can eat and that and. That's best case scenario, a
- 49:05week. It's probably going to be more
- 49:07like a month and a crossbow. You're hitting the freaking
- 49:11middle within like three shots of the scopes on and you have a
- 49:15good bench. Rest best.
- 49:16Best case scenario, they still couldn't do it even if you
- 49:20handed them a bow that was perfectly tailored to them.
- 49:25Even if you went and got their peeps sided in to where they
- 49:28could see if you set the drawing for them a poundage that they
- 49:31could pull back, set up their site for them and sided it in
- 49:35and handed them the bow and said go home and you.
- 49:39Couldn't do. It because it takes practice.
- 49:42Where is if this way when you fully explain the muzzle loader
- 49:46thing, because I was ready to put it in rifle season complete
- 49:51going in traditional weapons at all.
- 49:55But when he explained it, it makes the most sense in the what
- 49:59do they call primitive? Archery is primitive weapon, but
- 50:03the Muzz loader has its own season a lot of time being a
- 50:06primitive weapon separate from rifle and archery, and it makes
- 50:11the most sense there because it is.
- 50:14It is primitive in a sense that it's still a crossbow, but I
- 50:19mean, like it doesn't. It's not like loading a a the
- 50:24string on a tribe bow where like it takes a level of effort and
- 50:28force to, you know, you know, pull that thing back and lock it
- 50:32in place like there's well, it depends.
- 50:34On the type of crossbow. So some of you have to actually
- 50:36pull back and then some have like reels on them but but also.
- 50:42You also can have scopes on a crossbow.
- 50:46I get people say, well, well, you can put magnification and
- 50:49clarification on your your compound bow.
- 50:52Yeah, up to 8 power, and half the time that most people's eyes
- 50:55can't do a clarifier and eight power.
- 50:59So my clarifier and magnification to your scope are
- 51:07nowhere near the same thing, your red dot nowhere near the
- 51:11same thing, your trigger, you literally pull nowhere near the
- 51:16same thing. I mean a.
- 51:19Release is pretty similar to a trigger but but I mean I.
- 51:23Don't think so like. The speeds.
- 51:26Which stays probable compared to a.
- 51:30Let me let me break it down. Let let me no way get.
- 51:32Them out. Let me.
- 51:34Break it down though, I do believe that.
- 51:38I think the best example is just take your classic noob, you know
- 51:41what I mean. Walk into your church or the
- 51:43grocery Mart and bring out the cashier and say hey, here's two
- 51:46things both loaded up. There's a arrow in the compound
- 51:51bow, there's a index release on it, and then there's a crossbow
- 51:56with a scope and a bolt. Load it up and say, all right,
- 52:00try to hit the center of that target.
- 52:03It's going to be so much easier with the crossbow.
- 52:05For a total noob, let's just be realistic.
- 52:07So and look, look, and here here's another reason why I love
- 52:11the muzzle loader comparison. Is it still as tough to caulk
- 52:16and load a crossbow like, especially if it's not the types
- 52:19that have like a real system or something along those lines.
- 52:22And it's also very hard to load up a muzzle loader.
- 52:25Like you got to know how to put the powder, put the little
- 52:29separator, put, you know, use a ramrod to put the bullet in.
- 52:33Like there's steps to it, much like there is on a crossbow.
- 52:35So it's and they shoot, I mean, muzzle loaders now can shoot
- 52:39very far, but a lot of times they won't let you use certain
- 52:42types of muzzle loader during muzzle loader season.
- 52:45So like the from the distance you can shoot is also relatively
- 52:50comparable. Like maybe a hunt, like I think
- 52:52150 yards of the crossbow was not.
- 52:54I don't think that's crazy. Like I'm, I don't know about the
- 52:57sport. But I don't.
- 52:59Think that's crazy? 150 yard arrow out of your cops.
- 53:03Here's the thing A. 123 yards is a probably a chip shot with a
- 53:06with a crossbow now I could be told and how long.
- 53:09Like, you see, you've been shooting for over 20 years.
- 53:12Yeah, I, I'm, I've been at it for 10 years now fairly
- 53:15consistently to. Like, if you told somebody to go
- 53:18now, go fling your arrow at 124 yards like we did today.
- 53:20Yeah, You where is that going to hit?
- 53:24Not even anywhere close. Not not even in the same
- 53:26vicinity of it's not even. So what what do y'all say then
- 53:30to the folks who say, well, if you start this, this, this
- 53:33argument, where do you draw the line?
- 53:35Because well, if that's, if that's the point, then this is a
- 53:38comment I get all the time. Well, why don't, why don't we
- 53:41just limit archery season to tribals because compounds so
- 53:43much easier and there's let off and you don't have to.
- 53:46You know what I mean? What do you What do you say to
- 53:47people who argue about what they call a slippery slope?
- 53:51I agree that that is I, I agree with it that that is a slippery
- 53:56slope to us to to a point. I guess I don't have a good
- 54:01answer for that that I really thought about.
- 54:03All I can tell you is what I think initially here in the
- 54:06question, and I guess it would be that people have been hunting
- 54:10with compound bows. This is 7 early 70s, maybe even
- 54:17the 60s with compound bows. I don't believe crossbows how
- 54:23they are now really have become super common to hunt with to to
- 54:28a lot more recent. So maybe it would just be like a
- 54:32time thing like, OK, but then you could say, oh, well, the
- 54:35Matthews lift was made in 2026. So it's like it's tough for me.
- 54:39But maybe just that the the compound bow has been in
- 54:43rotation with certain regulations and caps as far as
- 54:47how fast they are, the poundage, you got to be able to pull them.
- 54:50It's more physical, maybe something like historical based
- 54:55is all I could think of. What you got?
- 54:59This is great the the comments are going to be in it up in this
- 55:02one jump in the comments No, I love it he's stirring the pot.
- 55:06You can hear a pin drop in here What I'm.
- 55:08Going to say is not polite. Oh geez.
- 55:10Oh geez, to the people. Leaving those comments, you
- 55:16know, you have ever seen those reels that like ladies do
- 55:19sometimes on Instagram or tick tock where they they legit like
- 55:23they'll be like they'll show the reels that they were, you know,
- 55:28cooking in their kitchen or something and then they
- 55:30literally pull up the comet with the picture of the dude who left
- 55:33the comet. I was like that ass was flying
- 55:35from the fan caker and she then comes through with a heater or
- 55:39whatever. I'm like, that's what needs to
- 55:41be done here because listen here to Linda like for the person who
- 55:45says that, Oh well, the comcom's so much easier.
- 55:48So maybe we should just all shoot traps then.
- 55:50First off, have you ever even shot a trap or a comet?
- 55:53No, get up off your computer and how much you go down with
- 55:56hardware shop and try shooting one or the other and tell me how
- 55:59easy it is. Secondly, for the trad shooter
- 56:03who has shot a trad bow. That gosh.
- 56:06Dang, compound bow then, And tell me how easy it is because
- 56:10you're shooting a trad bow, whatever it is, whether you like
- 56:13it for most people or you're shooting it for a reason because
- 56:17you can't pull the way of a compound or you can't see
- 56:20through the peep of a compound. Having those things doesn't make
- 56:24it easier. I think I've been let off mate.
- 56:28Yeah, I. Think it does.
- 56:31I like and it. Actually, it's our house.
- 56:33Definitely going to be more physical to shoot a reader for
- 56:36sure. It's.
- 56:36Easier in that sense. But is it hard to put all of
- 56:40those traits also still together and be good at it?
- 56:44Yeah, yes, just as hard. Like it's it's also hard to pick
- 56:49up a trad and be really good at it, but both are still in the
- 56:53realm because a 20. Yard shot on the trap is like,
- 56:56that's not that's not easy being bail.
- 56:59With a trap, I punch myself in the face, but they're both still
- 57:04in the realm enough to me of heart.
- 57:07So if you say you're walking a slippery slope, I'm like, both
- 57:09of those are so far into the slippery slope that it's like
- 57:13they're both equally. You could say a triad is harder,
- 57:16yes, but they're both so hard for me as far as being
- 57:20traditional weapons that the gap between both and they are.
- 57:27You got a trophob. It's fathoms apart.
- 57:30I mean, the deepest of the Black Sea apart, you know, And there's
- 57:35not Marianas. Trench.
- 57:37Yeah, there's. Not Marianas Trench between the
- 57:39compound and the trad for me to say, well, where is it in the
- 57:44slippery slope? They're both way down at the
- 57:45bottom. And here's the the, you know,
- 57:48crossbow way up here on its high and mighty peasant pedestal
- 57:51left. I don't want to hear it.
- 57:54It's just who would? Who would who would have guessed
- 57:56that? Can you shoot him off a tripod?
- 57:59Yeah. See.
- 57:59That's what. See.
- 58:00Come on, another and. It's like now I will say
- 58:03Arizona, unless you have a handicap license.
- 58:07Arizona banned the tripod from being used with your recurve.
- 58:12No, you. Mean your crossbow, not recurve.
- 58:14Yeah, using a tripod with a recurve will be crazy.
- 58:18What are you putting the grip on?
- 58:19And let her fly. So here's my line.
- 58:21All right, let. Me, let me hear this.
- 58:23Let me hear this. The reason?
- 58:24Why I draw the line at compound for archery season is because
- 58:30remember I'm coming from a perspective of my first animal
- 58:34was I was probably 24, right? So like already an adult, I got
- 58:38in the vicinity of animals and in range where I could have put
- 58:41them down so many times before an arrow actually connected.
- 58:46You know where I messed up every single time going from here to
- 58:50here close enough for at to be at hunting range.
- 58:54These animals, they survive by catching movement.
- 58:58So if you're close enough to get to full draw and then you have
- 59:01to do this. Don't tell me that doing this is
- 59:04comparable to bringing it up to your shoulder.
- 59:07Like that is a totally different planet.
- 59:10So like I don't know if you, I don't know if I'll be locked
- 59:13and. Loaded right?
- 59:13I don't know. If I'm not locked.
- 59:15And loaded like I can have my arrow on and my release hooked
- 59:18us the bow still got to get drawn back.
- 59:21You know, like you can walk around with your crossbow ready
- 59:24to go, like even especially if you're out of close, you get you
- 59:29stock into a close range. You don't even need your scope.
- 59:32You literally pull the crossbow off to your eyeball and pull
- 59:36your trigger. It's like.
- 59:38That's why it's. Not a slippery slope for me,
- 59:40Not. Closer to a gun than it is to
- 59:44both be both bows that have to actively be drawn back to make
- 59:48the shot. Has that been?
- 59:49Y'all experience with like, OK, getting close.
- 59:52That's OK, cool. Part Part 1 done.
- 59:55I'm close enough now getting to full draw with all, especially
- 59:59where I'm at all these axis deer everywhere.
- 1:00:01Like there's so many eyes and their bodies are they match the
- 1:00:06dirt, They match the red dirt. So you didn't even see this eye.
- 1:00:09And then all of a sudden and the whole field erupts and
- 1:00:12everything's going just yeah. I, I know I agree.
- 1:00:16I mean, I think that, you know, the draw.
- 1:00:20I hadn't. I never considered what you
- 1:00:23said, but to me that makes a whole lot of sense because just
- 1:00:26another. Check Mark in the closer to a
- 1:00:28gun than a bow lineup. Well, I mean, thank you.
- 1:00:31For you're sitting in a tree stand with a crossbow, it's
- 1:00:35going to be caulked, it has a bolt in it.
- 1:00:37You're sitting it on the top of the railing and then you just
- 1:00:41literally just and shoot or you're on the ground and a
- 1:00:44tripod and and there's no movement required.
- 1:00:47Whereas with the bow, you know, like you said, that's a big
- 1:00:49movement. A lot.
- 1:00:50I mean, look, you know it's a it's a 29 1/2 inch movement plus
- 1:00:54any up and down you do in your process.
- 1:00:56And let's take into. Account to your nerves are.
- 1:01:00So as. Strong as you are here flat on a
- 1:01:02flat range and then all of a sudden adrenaline dump is real.
- 1:01:05So now you see them videos when they're like.
- 1:01:09Help me draw my bow. Back like, you ain't got to deal
- 1:01:11with that. So good point.
- 1:01:15I figured. I figured we'd probably run out
- 1:01:17of time. I did had one more point on
- 1:01:18that. People always say, I'm sure
- 1:01:21you've heard it in these conversations with so many
- 1:01:24people out here trying to attack our hunting rights and take away
- 1:01:27public lands. I can't believe you guys are
- 1:01:29infighting about this. And I definitely, I reject that
- 1:01:32premise, right? I think we as an archery
- 1:01:36community, whether you're shooting a crossbow, because at
- 1:01:38the end of the day, do whatever you're allowed to do, wherever
- 1:01:40you're allowed to do it at. Agreed.
- 1:01:42Whether you're shooting a crossbow, muzzle loader, fixed
- 1:01:45blade, mechanical, whatever tribe you're in, we're still in
- 1:01:48one big family. I think it's healthy for us to
- 1:01:51have this dialogue. It's sparring.
- 1:01:54We are within our own gym. Sparring before going out to a
- 1:01:57fight. Couldn't, could you imagine like
- 1:02:012 fighters on the team saying hey, with all the people we're
- 1:02:04going to have to compete against out there, we can't be wasting
- 1:02:07our time in here fighting against each other.
- 1:02:08This is your argument should stand up against my argument.
- 1:02:12And if it doesn't, and I find out that you made a point that I
- 1:02:16hadn't thought about, I have to get off of my heel and change my
- 1:02:19opinion, right? I have to be willing to change
- 1:02:21my opinion or we're going to look like idiots when it's time
- 1:02:24to go up and against these folks who want to take public lands
- 1:02:27and who want to do this or, or the third, because we have just
- 1:02:30made our arguments and echo chambers thinking that we're
- 1:02:33being unified. We're not being unified.
- 1:02:35We're weaken ourselves, weakening ourselves because
- 1:02:37we're not willing to have the dialogue.
- 1:02:39The dialogue should be had. It should be respectful.
- 1:02:42And then the best points win. And then we take those to
- 1:02:45Capitol Hill wherever we need to take them.
- 1:02:47That's that's my soapbox on that.
- 1:02:50Dude, I, I, I, so I think that was very well said.
- 1:02:54I've always said that some people will come with the point
- 1:03:00that you shouldn't promote hunting.
- 1:03:06You shouldn't be trying to get people in taunting like that's a
- 1:03:10bad thing, right? And I've always rejected that
- 1:03:14and said that I think we need to prospect more hunters.
- 1:03:18One, because the older generation of hunters is going
- 1:03:22to be dying. They're going to die off.
- 1:03:24It's just part of life, right? And the younger folks are not
- 1:03:28replacing them at even close. Why the same rate?
- 1:03:33Well, because, you know, one, people are having a lot less
- 1:03:36kids. Can't.
- 1:03:37Afford to have kids and number. Two kids of course, are spend
- 1:03:41more time inside video games, phones, being more connected.
- 1:03:44So that's part of it too. If you do not prospect and bring
- 1:03:48more people into your sport into the gym essentially, then you're
- 1:03:54cooked because you can't take anything to Capitol Hill, right.
- 1:03:57You need the strength in numbers.
- 1:03:59I had never really thought of the way you you push it, but I I
- 1:04:02don't disagree with it. I think it's good to have
- 1:04:04dialogue back and forth about different issues so long as
- 1:04:10you're not like discouraging someone you agree with to quit
- 1:04:13the sport. That makes sense.
- 1:04:15But if you're just having a debate back and forth saying,
- 1:04:18hey, I think fixed blades are wack and I think you should use
- 1:04:24a beast, but I'm not saying hey, quit hunting because you're
- 1:04:28using an idiot. That would be dumb, right?
- 1:04:31But I totally agree with you that as long as you're not
- 1:04:34infighting in this like bullying way, that's going to make people
- 1:04:38want to quit and reject the culture and and signing the
- 1:04:42ballot measures and things like that.
- 1:04:44But it's in a respectful dialogue like sparring type way.
- 1:04:49I'm all. For it, well, I.
- 1:04:51And I look at it this way and I'm not going to talk about
- 1:04:53politics, but I'm going to use it as an example, not any
- 1:04:57specific politic, but just politics in general.
- 1:05:00So, you know, we just had this talk.
- 1:05:02We're on the hunt when he if everyone just assumed that all
- 1:05:07the rules and laws are correct as they stand, you know right
- 1:05:12now, whether it's on your side on the left or your side on the
- 1:05:14right or or whatever, or as it is in the hunting right now, the
- 1:05:18bylaws and laws that exist are all they're just right as they
- 1:05:22are. How are you ever going to
- 1:05:25inflict improvement and change the?
- 1:05:28Letter. Could it couldn't.
- 1:05:29So you don't think of the grand scheme of politics, even if you
- 1:05:34were on the left or the right, you know that doesn't mean that
- 1:05:38all the laws that currently exist one way or the other are
- 1:05:43all already right. That's why we vote every me, but
- 1:05:47no, fun fact, I've never voted a day of my life.
- 1:05:52We're going to. Change that next year I have.
- 1:05:53Many times I vote. I'm a good, proud voter, yeah,
- 1:05:57but. If you if you never debate
- 1:06:02within your own side, how are you improving your side facts?
- 1:06:09Facts. Doesn't make any sense.
- 1:06:11So why would we not debate within our own side like we're
- 1:06:15not out to get somebody cancel their their piece of equipment
- 1:06:20and and say, Nope, get rid of it.
- 1:06:23And we're also not here to just, you know, stand behind the
- 1:06:27leader and say he must be right, must be right.
- 1:06:30No, If you don't debate between each other, how are you going to
- 1:06:32improve yourselves, to improve your party or ID, your hunting
- 1:06:37community, to grow your Land Management laws and your, you
- 1:06:43know, habitat and Conservancy Like that just logically makes
- 1:06:48no sense to me to have that argument of why are we arguing
- 1:06:51with each other? That's why I haven't.
- 1:06:53Responded to some of the comments because I'm like, I
- 1:06:55need more time to flesh out a complete thought for to explain
- 1:06:59it. I think because by nature of
- 1:07:02what I do for work, a lot of it is you're audited by your
- 1:07:06friends, people you came up with and now their job is that they
- 1:07:09did your job. Now their job is come back and
- 1:07:10look at you and then you transfer and your job is come
- 1:07:12back and look at their books. And you can always tell somebody
- 1:07:15who's kind of immature in that position or new, you can tell
- 1:07:18who the green one is. Because when somebody looks at
- 1:07:20their books and says all that, you know, that work you've been
- 1:07:23doing for the last two years, you did this wrong.
- 1:07:24In accordance with this, you're wrong.
- 1:07:26In accordance with this, you're wrong.
- 1:07:28You have to this day to fix it. And then the person who's been
- 1:07:31doing the work, they get so emotional about somebody picking
- 1:07:34apart the program, right? But you can tell the more mature
- 1:07:37folks afterwards they're sitting down eating together, you know,
- 1:07:41laughing and talking. Because at the end of the day is
- 1:07:43to improve the processes and at the end of the day, it is to get
- 1:07:47better. So once you recognize the lens
- 1:07:49that I am talking from, bro, you cross If if you're a crossbow
- 1:07:53hunter and somebody's jumping you, I got your back.
- 1:07:56I was raised that if you and your brother can go back and
- 1:08:00forth, but if somebody jumps on your brother out out somewhere,
- 1:08:03you, you both better get beat up there.
- 1:08:06You know what I mean? I got your back, but that
- 1:08:08doesn't mean that I'm whining for having this conversation,
- 1:08:11right, dude? No, I mean, I think that's why I
- 1:08:13love. The politics example because it
- 1:08:15was a good. Example you use the Navy.
- 1:08:17Example, it's like it's it, you have to be able to improve
- 1:08:23processes and, and the, the overall like picture of what it
- 1:08:31is. It can't just always stay the
- 1:08:33same. If that were the case, like
- 1:08:35technology wouldn't be where it is right now.
- 1:08:37The country wouldn't be where it is.
- 1:08:41It wouldn't be better than it was in the, you know, it's just
- 1:08:46things always have to improve and always can improve.
- 1:08:52We're at the. Very least change rate within.
- 1:08:55Each other things change. Find.
- 1:08:57Yeah, yeah. Whether, you know, there's ups
- 1:09:00and downs, but you know, the goal is to always go this way.
- 1:09:03You can't go this way if you don't discuss amongst each
- 1:09:07other. So it's not to cut people down,
- 1:09:10but maybe open, like you say, open your mind to the fact that
- 1:09:13it's improving the process. So nobody's trying to come at
- 1:09:18you and cut you down, but maybe there is a way to improve the
- 1:09:22process and you know, increase animal, you know, you know,
- 1:09:27numbers and habitat, blah, blah, blah.
- 1:09:29It like if for how many times do you go out and you see a
- 1:09:35crossbow hunter? Practicing.
- 1:09:39With their cross, well, a lot. Of yeah, they're not allowed at
- 1:09:41a lot of places, no so. They use different targets, so
- 1:09:44like the densities have to be different and I'm sure it exists
- 1:09:47somewhere, but and hopefully. You don't know, hopefully
- 1:09:50they're practicing at their house, but are they practicing
- 1:09:52as much as a trot or a compound shooter are?
- 1:09:56Fun fact, I only have shot a crossbow one time in my life.
- 1:09:59Yeah, I shot 11 time, but. All I say is that, you know, it
- 1:10:03takes a lot of practice to get good at a compound.
- 1:10:06So one, are you practicing that much with your your crossbow?
- 1:10:11And then two, you brought it up of like the nerves factor and
- 1:10:15like I have from from a source her.
- 1:10:19That doesn't mean it's, it's true or that it's factual or
- 1:10:23there's a data or statistic to prove it.
- 1:10:25But the in their history of, of guiding and and serving hunters,
- 1:10:32they have had more injured animals from their crossbow
- 1:10:36hunters and they have their, their compound hunters.
- 1:10:41And it begs the question, not saying it is true because
- 1:10:46there's no statistic out there. Maybe there is.
- 1:10:48He knows. Come at me with them in the
- 1:10:50comments. But but you there's a much
- 1:10:57faster point that they can get to pulling that trigger than the
- 1:11:01compound or trash shooter can. So did they have the time to
- 1:11:05work through those nerves, calm themselves, breathe through the
- 1:11:08shot, which if they don't and they just pull the trigger,
- 1:11:14well, I'm inclined to believe that that could cause more
- 1:11:16injured animals than the compound shooter who has to
- 1:11:19practice and work through the nerves because they're you could
- 1:11:24be nervous as hell. You just and just like a, you
- 1:11:28know, a long range shooter with a rifle, you don't just pick up
- 1:11:31the rifle and because it has a scope on it, you hit the middle
- 1:11:34every time. Like if they don't know how to
- 1:11:36breathe and work through it, you're not going to hit the
- 1:11:39target every single time. Well, it could be the same for a
- 1:11:42crossbow shooter shooting an ammo and then you're shooting
- 1:11:44them in the back, you're shooting them in the butt,
- 1:11:46you're shooting them in the leg. And so I'm not saying you do
- 1:11:49that every time as a crossbow razer, but that stuff that asks
- 1:11:54again, be thought about in the process.
- 1:11:56And so it's like, well, if it relates more to a gun and you've
- 1:12:01got to then there, there are certain things that they should
- 1:12:03be practicing or doing. I know some states don't even
- 1:12:07require the person to who's getting their hunting license to
- 1:12:12show that they can pull the bolt back, the string back.
- 1:12:17So like, they'll go with their parents.
- 1:12:19The parents will load the crossbow.
- 1:12:21All they have to do is prove that they can pull the trigger
- 1:12:24three times. Well, what if daddy's not in the
- 1:12:27crossbow in the blind with you every single time?
- 1:12:32And then he just injured an animal and slang there.
- 1:12:34But you can't shoot it again. You can't pull the crossbow
- 1:12:37back. Better pull the.
- 1:12:38Knife out if you. Don't get over and slip some
- 1:12:40throats. Well.
- 1:12:42I'm sure the comment section will be just a happy fun loving
- 1:12:46bunch. A nice group.
- 1:12:49Brianna went on a good rant there.
- 1:12:50Shit was rapping at the last 15 minutes you know.
