- 0:00SPEAKER_00: The real cost of that shiny object might not hit your wallet at first.
- 0:06SPEAKER_00: It might hit your purpose.
- 0:09Today,
- 0:10we're in Proverbs 7,
- 0:1221 through 23,
- 0:14because it's the seventh day of the month.
- 0:21SPEAKER_00: Well,
- 0:22SPEAKER_00: hello,
- 0:22SPEAKER_00: I'm Ernie Lansford,
- 0:23SPEAKER_00: and welcome to Marketplace Proverbs and Coffee with Ernie,
- 0:27SPEAKER_00: where a proverb a day keeps stinking thinking away.
- 0:32SPEAKER_00: Have you ever looked at a bar of soap and realized what it's for?
- 0:36You know,
- 0:36a bar of soap or liquid wash,
- 0:38we use it to clean things,
- 0:40especially our bodies.
- 0:42But we should also look for ways that we can seek internal
- 0:46cleansing through the
- 0:48transformative power of God's Word that helps us and guides us
- 0:53to be strong and,
- 0:54SPEAKER_00: frankly,
- 0:55SPEAKER_00: better influencers in everything we do.
- 0:59SPEAKER_00: And our podcast is specifically focused on the book of Proverbs.
- 1:03SPEAKER_00: Each episode follows the SOAP method.
- 1:08SPEAKER_00: It's an acronym for Scripture, Observation, Application, and Prayer.
- 1:15SPEAKER_00: Each day, we explore the proverb that matches the day of the month.
- 1:19SPEAKER_00: We reflect on His wisdom,
- 1:21SPEAKER_00: apply it to our service in the marketplace,
- 1:24SPEAKER_00: then we connect with God through prayer,
- 1:27hoping and praying that we'll become steward leaders and
- 1:32gospel-centric customer
- 1:34SPEAKER_00: success masters,
- 1:35SPEAKER_00: adding significance to everyone.
- 1:38So,
- 1:39grab your coffee and let's grow together in faith,
- 1:43purpose,
- 1:44and practical wisdom.
- 1:48SPEAKER_00: Today we're in Proverbs 7.
- 1:49SPEAKER_00: I've chosen verses 23.
- 1:51SPEAKER_00: I make that 21 through 23.
- 1:54SPEAKER_00: And I'm reading from the CSB.
- 1:59SPEAKER_00: Quote, she seduces him with her persistent pleading.
- 2:04SPEAKER_00: She lures him with her flattering talk.
- 2:08SPEAKER_00: He follows her impulsively like an ox going to the slaughter.
- 2:12SPEAKER_00: like a deer bounding toward a trap until the arrow pierces its liver,
- 2:19SPEAKER_00: like a bird darting into a snare.
- 2:22SPEAKER_00: He doesn't know it will cost him his life.
- 2:25SPEAKER_00: That's Proverbs 7, verses 21 through 23 from the CSB.
- 2:32Well,
- 2:33from my observation,
- 2:34this passage is often taught as a warning against moral
- 2:40temptation.
- 2:41SPEAKER_00: But frankly, I feel there's more to it.
- 2:45SPEAKER_00: It also speaks loudly to the marketplace,
- 2:49SPEAKER_00: to the lust of stuff,
- 2:51SPEAKER_00: images,
- 2:52SPEAKER_00: upgrades,
- 2:53SPEAKER_00: and success that seduces professionals,
- 2:57SPEAKER_00: all of us,
- 2:58SPEAKER_00: Me included.
- 2:59SPEAKER_00: I confess every day.
- 3:03SPEAKER_00: And sometimes it doesn't come from the outside.
- 3:08SPEAKER_00: It comes from within.
- 3:09SPEAKER_00: Now, I'm going to be very transparent with you.
- 3:13When my income started climbing as I started building
- 3:18relationships in the
- 3:21SPEAKER_00: business,
- 3:21SPEAKER_00: you know,
- 3:22SPEAKER_00: 60 years ago,
- 3:23SPEAKER_00: I felt I had earned something more impressive.
- 3:29than the old Pontiac Bonneville that I had in my first car as
- 3:34my rep-mobile,
- 3:35as we call it.
- 3:37SPEAKER_00: So I bought a Mercedes 450 SL convertible.
- 3:42SPEAKER_00: It screamed success, but in reality, it whispered compromise.
- 3:50SPEAKER_00: That car did more than just shrink my trunk space to hold samples.
- 3:57SPEAKER_00: It shrank my margin for service and significance.
- 4:01Instead of carrying eight guitars and printed materials to
- 4:06serve my clients,
- 4:08SPEAKER_00: I could carry only two.
- 4:10SPEAKER_00: It looked like a win, but it cost me more than I realized.
- 4:16SPEAKER_00: So here's an application thought.
- 4:18SPEAKER_00: You know, shiny objects equal empty returns at times.
- 4:24SPEAKER_00: And Proverbs 7 warns us about impulse, deception, blindness to the cost.
- 4:31SPEAKER_00: It describes a path that feels right but leads to loss.
- 4:37SPEAKER_00: In business, we don't always fall for moral seduction.
- 4:42SPEAKER_00: We fall for the image of success.
- 4:45SPEAKER_00: We buy things to impress people who aren't even our clients.
- 4:50SPEAKER_00: And often we end up serving our lenders,
- 4:54Our debt,
- 4:56instead of serving and adding significance to our customers and
- 5:01their customers.
- 5:03SPEAKER_00: I'm doing my best to say it clearly.
- 5:06SPEAKER_00: There's nothing wrong with quality.
- 5:09SPEAKER_00: But when our desire outpaces our purpose, we drift into indulgence.
- 5:18SPEAKER_00: And that's where the lust of stuff becomes a trap.
- 5:21SPEAKER_00: It pulls us out of partnership.
- 5:25SPEAKER_00: into performance,
- 5:27SPEAKER_00: out of our mission,
- 5:29SPEAKER_00: into marketing ourselves,
- 5:32SPEAKER_00: what I call shameless self-promotion.
- 5:35SPEAKER_00: But you know,
- 5:36when I began to re-anchor my life around the customer success
- 5:41code number two that
- 5:43SPEAKER_00: I wrote years ago,
- 5:45SPEAKER_00: quote,
- 5:45SPEAKER_00: know your customer's customer,
- 5:48SPEAKER_00: serve through versus selling to,
- 5:52SPEAKER_00: that's when everything changed.
- 5:54SPEAKER_00: I stopped chasing shiny objects and started adding significance.
- 6:01SPEAKER_00: I stopped chasing transactions and starting building deep,
- 6:06SPEAKER_00: significant,
- 6:08SPEAKER_00: meaningful relationships.
- 6:11SPEAKER_00: And you know what happened?
- 6:13SPEAKER_00: The transactions found me.
- 6:16SPEAKER_00: Think on that.
- 6:18Today's customer success code resists the lure of shiny objects
- 6:23to serve others,
- 6:25SPEAKER_00: for true success lies in partnership that outlasts fleeting desires.
- 6:34SPEAKER_00: So, today's action steps, very simple and frankly simple.
- 6:40SPEAKER_00: Obvious, number one is pause before buying.
- 6:44SPEAKER_00: Before we buy something shiny,
- 6:46SPEAKER_00: how about waiting 24 hours and ask,
- 6:50SPEAKER_00: well,
- 6:50SPEAKER_00: does this serve my partnerships?
- 6:54SPEAKER_00: Does this help me add significance to others?
- 6:57SPEAKER_00: Or does it just serve my pride?
- 7:02SPEAKER_00: Action point number two, let's review our debts.
- 7:06SPEAKER_00: Take a long,
- 7:06hard look at any financial obligation that's influencing
- 7:10business decisions and
- 7:13SPEAKER_00: create a plan to break free.
- 7:16You know,
- 7:16you're either adding significance to your customers or you're
- 7:19serving your debts.
- 7:22SPEAKER_00: It's difficult.
- 7:24SPEAKER_00: Action point number three is know your customer's customer.
- 7:29Right now,
- 7:29today,
- 7:30and this week,
- 7:31identify ways to help your customers help their customers.
- 7:37SPEAKER_00: Think about that.
- 7:38SPEAKER_00: Serve two layers deep.
- 7:41SPEAKER_00: And you know something?
- 7:43SPEAKER_00: Your customer's customer has a customer, too.
- 7:46And in the musical instrument products pro audio industry,
- 7:50that customer's customer has.
- 7:54is that customer's customer's customer is the audience,
- 7:59the fans in the stands.
- 8:02SPEAKER_00: Help everyone serve all the way through to the fans in the stands.
- 8:10SPEAKER_00: Action point number four is celebrate simplicity.
- 8:14Share a story with a colleague about choosing service and
- 8:19adding significance over image.
- 8:22SPEAKER_00: Help them grow by realizing that, and that's your new KPI.
- 8:28SPEAKER_00: And action point number five,
- 8:30SPEAKER_00: set a serving goal or a significance goal,
- 8:35SPEAKER_00: adding significance goal.
- 8:37SPEAKER_00: Choose one act,
- 8:38SPEAKER_00: big or small,
- 8:40SPEAKER_00: where you prioritize someone else's need over your desired upgrade.
- 8:49SPEAKER_00: Think about it.
- 8:52Lord,
- 8:52thank you for opening my eyes to the real cost of image and
- 8:58impulse.
- 8:59Help me to pause before chasing what fades and redirect my
- 9:05heart away from ego,
- 9:07SPEAKER_00: edging you out and into significance.
- 9:12Give me clarity to serve deeply,
- 9:15lead humbly,
- 9:17and trust you with the outcome.
- 9:20I don't want to live in the trap of self-focused ambition and
- 9:26shameless self-promotion.
- 9:29SPEAKER_00: I just want to walk and be directed by your wisdom.
- 9:34SPEAKER_00: In Jesus' name, amen.

- 10:24follow sinners or join in
- 10:26SPEAKER_00: sneering at God.
- 10:28Instead,
- 10:29they find happiness in the teaching of the Lord,
- 10:32and they think about it day and night.
- 10:35SPEAKER_00: They are like trees growing beside a stream.
- 10:38SPEAKER_00: Trees that produce fruit in season and always have leaves.
- 10:44SPEAKER_00: These people succeed in everything they do.
- 10:49SPEAKER_00: Psalms 1, 1, 2, 3 from the CEV.
