- 1:13Speaker 1: this one. Enjoy the show. The recket Rocket im here
- 1:28Speaker 1: welcome everybody to the Thanksgiving week edition of the Tailgate
- 1:34Speaker 1: and joining me. I know we play the Arizona Cardinals,
- 1:37Speaker 1: but I wanted to talk about Thanksgiving. And who better
- 1:41Speaker 1: to discuss Thanksgiving with than a man whose team plays
- 1:46Speaker 1: every year on Thanksgiving than a man whose team is
- 1:49Speaker 1: in first place in the NFC North and relevant for
- 1:52Speaker 1: the first time in fifty years. Ladies and gentlemen, welcome
- 1:56Speaker 1: back to the program. Fan favorite Zach Martin.
- 2:00Speaker 2: Hello, Zachary high sidh and I just want to you
- 2:05Speaker 2: you forgot tied for first place in the NFL.
- 2:07Speaker 1: You forgot I mean with some more of an NFC
- 2:09Speaker 1: you know, an NFC North conversation. We were talking a
- 2:13Speaker 1: little bit off air before we started the show, and
- 2:16Speaker 1: I realized we needed to bring it onto the air.
- 2:19Speaker 1: You are right now riding high with a level of
- 2:24Speaker 1: confidence that is foreign to me, and I am curious.
- 2:29Speaker 1: Are you not concerned about the let down like you?
- 2:33Speaker 1: You seem so in and why not? You've got the
- 2:36Speaker 1: best team in football potentially, But is there is there
- 2:40Speaker 1: no worry that the more you climb this mountain, the
- 2:45Speaker 1: harder the fall could possibly be.
- 2:48Speaker 2: Uh?
- 2:48Speaker 1: Come January February time or is it just a lack
- 2:52Speaker 1: of success historically that you're just enjoying the ride.
- 2:55Speaker 3: I mean, it's all of the above.
- 2:56Speaker 2: And I know that's kind of a cop out answer,
- 2:58Speaker 2: but you said confident, yes, but it's you also said
- 3:01Speaker 2: the word concerned. I would say it is a concerned
- 3:04Speaker 2: confidence because we have been hurt before. Now I've never
- 3:08Speaker 2: now listened. Think about the Lion King and Pride Rock
- 3:12Speaker 2: where Rafiki holds Simba up to the sky and it's
- 3:16Speaker 2: a beautiful thing. I mean, that's about the height we
- 3:18Speaker 2: would fall from. Yeah, circle of life, and that would
- 3:21Speaker 2: and that would definitely be painful.
- 3:24Speaker 3: Last year, there.
- 3:26Speaker 2: Was disappointment when we h when we blew it there
- 3:28Speaker 2: in the second half of the NFC Championship game.
- 3:31Speaker 3: However, this year.
- 3:33Speaker 2: Like we were over all last year, proud, like excited,
- 3:35Speaker 2: like no one expected that to happen so quickly, this
- 3:38Speaker 2: year will feel a little bit different. I mean, just
- 3:41Speaker 2: the way the offense is destroying people. Our defense has
- 3:45Speaker 2: given up eleven second half points in the last five games,
- 3:48Speaker 2: and all of those were to Green Bay.
- 3:51Speaker 3: Our team is very good, and it will it will hurt.
- 3:56Speaker 2: I saw a stat the other day that said betting
- 3:58Speaker 2: sites are really really pulling against the Lions because there
- 4:03Speaker 2: has never been a team that had more futures bet
- 4:06Speaker 2: placed on them.
- 4:07Speaker 3: So they still to lose a lot of.
- 4:08Speaker 1: Money because the the interesting thing from an outsider's perspective,
- 4:13Speaker 1: I look over at your team and I think often
- 4:17Speaker 1: I think we're so tricked by Tom Brady and Patrick
- 4:20Speaker 1: Mahomes into this idea that you can be a perennial contender,
- 4:26Speaker 1: you know, through over the course of decades. It's just
- 4:31Speaker 1: not really reality in the NFL. And unless you have
- 4:36Speaker 1: a surefire first ballot Hall of Fame quarterback, and so
- 4:41Speaker 1: you are the Buffalo Bills. The Buffalo Bills are doing
- 4:43Speaker 1: some sneaky stuff right now.
- 4:45Speaker 3: Yeah, let me do it here.
- 4:47Speaker 1: Sneaky but sneaky good where Joe Brady is coming there
- 4:50Speaker 1: and they've always been a downfield passing attack and now
- 4:53Speaker 1: it's all short intermediary. Josh Allen has thrown like touchdowns
- 4:57Speaker 1: to eleven people. It's just there's something, there's something different
- 5:01Speaker 1: and interesting over there.
- 5:03Speaker 2: And Amari Cooper has not been one hundred for them
- 5:05Speaker 2: since that first game there. I mean, he is going
- 5:06Speaker 2: to change the game for that's.
- 5:08Speaker 1: That's one hundred that's that's absolutely correct. And so I'm
- 5:12Speaker 1: looking at you guys. I do think you're the best
- 5:14Speaker 1: team in the NFL right now. But I think this
- 5:15Speaker 1: is a seize the moment for you situation because Goff's
- 5:20Speaker 1: contract is gonna it's gonna click in, right and that's
- 5:24Speaker 1: gonna change your roster. You've got Ben Johnson who seems
- 5:29Speaker 1: like almost unwilling to consider being a head coach anywhere else.
- 5:32Speaker 3: At some point he's and I hope that meantime.
- 5:35Speaker 1: I just can't imagine it does. But at some point
- 5:39Speaker 1: we're both in that situation. We both have coordinators who
- 5:43Speaker 1: we know should be head coaches right now. Sure, and
- 5:47Speaker 1: it's just a matter of time. And I think we're
- 5:49Speaker 1: both sitting there going, you know, there's this window. So
- 5:52Speaker 1: that's that's what I'm curious about, where I think when
- 5:55Speaker 1: I talk to you, you act like you're just walking
- 5:58Speaker 1: into the beginning of the hey day, and me, as
- 6:01Speaker 1: a sports fan, I'm going, I mean, I hope, So,
- 6:03Speaker 1: I mean, this might be the year. This might be it.
- 6:06Speaker 1: It has to be, this might be, this might be.
- 6:08Speaker 2: That's the worry I have every week is that it's
- 6:10Speaker 2: I hope we don't buy into our hype and so
- 6:13Speaker 2: far we have not. It seemed like Houston we may
- 6:16Speaker 2: have bought in a little bit. And then Dan Campbell
- 6:19Speaker 2: did what Dan Campbell does and and rallied a group
- 6:23Speaker 2: of men in the locker room to come back and
- 6:25Speaker 2: win that game. Then Jacksonville, I mean that was that
- 6:29Speaker 2: was rough for any Jag fan.
- 6:31Speaker 3: And then this past.
- 6:33Speaker 2: Week against the Colts away, I mean, we're six and
- 6:37Speaker 2: zero away right now, which is bananas.
- 6:40Speaker 1: It's a pretty crazy number. I have. Everybody who's listening
- 6:43Speaker 1: to the show forever knows that I'm a worrying fan.
- 6:46Speaker 1: I tend to think the bottom is going to fall out. Well, also,
- 6:51Speaker 1: that doesn't keep me from enjoying the big moments. I
- 6:53Speaker 1: don't in the big moments, I don't go oh no,
- 6:55Speaker 1: like I still enjoyed. I just like I'm more of
- 6:58Speaker 1: a worrier. But I've been quietly saying this and now
- 7:03Speaker 1: I'm starting to loudly say it. I also think the
- 7:07Speaker 1: Vikings are in a moment here. Okay, I don't know
- 7:11Speaker 1: that I'm right, but they're just showing pieces of everything. Right.
- 7:17Speaker 1: So this weekend, Hockinson and Addison finally get going right.
- 7:21Speaker 3: I mean, Aaron Jones had a great game.
- 7:23Speaker 1: But here's the thing, if you actually watch the game,
- 7:25Speaker 1: it was like a little at the beginning and a
- 7:27Speaker 1: little at the end when it was important. So they
- 7:29Speaker 1: haven't really put the run game together the end. It's
- 7:31Speaker 1: like different weeks. They've had different pieces of the offense,
- 7:36Speaker 1: and at some point, I'm telling you, man, if an
- 7:40Speaker 1: offense doesn't truly figure this defense out at some point,
- 7:43Speaker 1: if coach O'Connell is as good as we all believe
- 7:47Speaker 1: he is, at some point he's gonna pull all these
- 7:49Speaker 1: pieces together. And dude, I think there is a chance
- 7:54Speaker 1: that they make a run. I think there is a
- 7:55Speaker 1: chance they beat the Lions. I think this is a
- 7:59Speaker 1: unique moment for them as a team as well, given
- 8:01Speaker 1: what Brian Flores is doing and the fact that he
- 8:04Speaker 1: probably will be somewhere else next year. And you look
- 8:07Speaker 1: at the last two games. This is the most underrated
- 8:09Speaker 1: thing with the Vikings. Sam Donald was phenomenal against the
- 8:13Speaker 1: Bears because they've been playing this too high safety stuff.
- 8:16Speaker 1: You know, they've been trying to make and he had
- 8:18Speaker 1: those run of games where he turned the ball over
- 8:21Speaker 1: a bunch and everybody freaked out. He was forcing it
- 8:23Speaker 1: to Jefferson. Now you are actively seeing Sam Donald when
- 8:28Speaker 1: he drops back on these long drops, with these long
- 8:30Speaker 1: developing plays, and you see him, Oh, there's nothing, there's nothing.
- 8:34Speaker 1: He is taking the sacks and he's throwing the ball
- 8:36Speaker 1: out of bounds and he's not forcing it anywhere.
- 8:38Speaker 2: I think the same thing about Jared Goff that you
- 8:41Speaker 2: said a very interesting thing.
- 8:42Speaker 3: And I the way that you.
- 8:45Speaker 2: Describe sacks being put upon a quarterback is very very
- 8:49Speaker 2: interesting because I think the verb makes a difference. And
- 8:51Speaker 2: what you just said about Donald, I fully believe about golf,
- 8:55Speaker 2: he is not getting sacked. He is taking sacks because
- 8:59Speaker 2: he is a like that's his choice, that's what's best
- 9:01Speaker 2: for the offense. It's not necessarily the defense. I mean,
- 9:05Speaker 2: the defense is winning, but he's not making a home
- 9:10Speaker 2: run mistake, if that makes sense. And I think the
- 9:13Speaker 2: ability to take sacks, and I think what you're saying
- 9:15Speaker 2: about Sam Darnold, like he's at a time now where
- 9:19Speaker 2: it's a brand new team. He's you know, this is
- 9:21Speaker 2: his first year in that system. I think it's starting
- 9:23Speaker 2: starting to click. I think he's just starting to see
- 9:25Speaker 2: things with a wider scope.
- 9:27Speaker 1: Yeah, I think so. And I think figuring out. It
- 9:32Speaker 1: almost is like, uh, when you warm up in tennis,
- 9:35Speaker 1: this is gonna be the dumbest metaphor in the history
- 9:39Speaker 1: of the world. Right, So you know, at least when
- 9:43Speaker 1: I would warm up when I played tennis, I would
- 9:45Speaker 1: never go back to the service line, right. I stretch
- 9:48Speaker 1: a little bit, you know, I take some groundstrokes from
- 9:52Speaker 1: the baseline. Then you come up and you play them
- 9:54Speaker 1: that a little bit, get your arm loosened up, so
- 9:56Speaker 1: you kind of dial some things in, and then you'd
- 9:59Speaker 1: go back and you'd start serving. But when you serve
- 10:02Speaker 1: to me, I always put the first handful of serves.
- 10:05Speaker 1: I just uncorked them, and I you know, I shot
- 10:08Speaker 1: past the box, right sure, I intentionally overshot, and then
- 10:13Speaker 1: I dialed things in.
- 10:14Speaker 3: The same thing in pickleball.
- 10:15Speaker 1: It's that's what the Sam Darnold season has felt like, though,
- 10:20Speaker 1: Right he goes out the first few games and they're
- 10:23Speaker 1: just kind of taking groundstrokes and and and working the net.
- 10:27Speaker 1: And they can do that because the defense was on
- 10:28Speaker 1: a historic run, right. You know that that Texans game,
- 10:32Speaker 1: that Packers game, the whole game was tilted against the
- 10:35Speaker 1: other team because of all the turnovers, like missed field goals,
- 10:39Speaker 1: fourth down stops, all this stuff. Then they kind of
- 10:41Speaker 1: turned on. They pushed it a little bit, and here
- 10:43Speaker 1: he is that you know, you lose Christian Darisaw, you're
- 10:46Speaker 1: making some mistakes. They they out, they pushed out a
- 10:49Speaker 1: little far, and now they're reeling it back in where
- 10:52Speaker 1: it should be. I think the real test is you
- 10:54Speaker 1: would have loved to, as a Vikings fan see in
- 10:56Speaker 1: this run of what I think some people would call
- 10:59Speaker 1: subpar opponents right the AFC South into the Bears. You
- 11:03Speaker 1: would have liked to have seen a more complete offensive performance.
- 11:08Speaker 1: But I would argue the last two weeks with how
- 11:10Speaker 1: well Sam played, they were a moment away in each
- 11:13Speaker 1: game from feeling that way. If Jalen Naylor catches the
- 11:16Speaker 1: touchdown against the Titans, that's a thirty point game. It's
- 11:19Speaker 1: a block. Sure. If Brandon Powell doesn't set a literal
- 11:23Speaker 1: basketball screen, I think the play still works. Jefferson scores
- 11:27Speaker 1: a touchdown and it's the same thing there. So they're
- 11:29Speaker 1: just so close, and with the Cardinals and the Falcons
- 11:33Speaker 1: coming up, I think if you're a Lions fan, and
- 11:35Speaker 1: I don't talk like this, but if you're a Lions fan,
- 11:39Speaker 1: what you absolutely don't want to see in the next
- 11:42Speaker 1: two games is what you saw last night from the
- 11:45Speaker 1: Philadelphia Eagles, where you go, oh, the Eagles have an identity.
- 11:49Speaker 1: They're really like this Barkley thing was a thing, but
- 11:51Speaker 1: it really is. You just really don't want to see
- 11:56Speaker 1: the Vikings offensive identity gel the next two weeks.
- 12:00Speaker 3: If you're you no, I don't.
- 12:03Speaker 2: Well, ultimately, what I don't want to see in the
- 12:05Speaker 2: next few weeks is any kind of loss from the
- 12:09Speaker 2: Lions because right now we are ten and one, the
- 12:12Speaker 2: Packers are what nine and two, and you're eight and three.
- 12:14Speaker 1: Oh flip pop, we're nine and two. They're eight and three.
- 12:16Speaker 2: You're nine and two, they're eight and three. The NFC
- 12:20Speaker 2: North is I mean, this is the league right now.
- 12:24Speaker 2: This is the hottest division, the toughest division. I mean,
- 12:27Speaker 2: the Bears record doesn't reflect it, but they're playing a
- 12:29Speaker 2: lot of teams tough. So I mean you take that
- 12:32Speaker 2: as you will. I don't want to see losses because
- 12:34Speaker 2: I don't want to see us potentially lose what we
- 12:37Speaker 2: have in this moment, which is the number one seed
- 12:39Speaker 2: and the bye. Now, when you speak about the Philadelphia
- 12:43Speaker 2: Eagles and their identity, as far as running the ball,
- 12:46Speaker 2: our defensive identity is stopping the run. And I know
- 12:49Speaker 2: you're speaking of the Minnesota Vikings. The passing attack in particular,
- 12:55Speaker 2: for me, is always the strong suit for your team.
- 12:57Speaker 2: Not that Aaron Jones is a subpar running back, He's
- 12:59Speaker 2: a great running back. I just think what you have
- 13:01Speaker 2: in the receiving corps is something special. We are also
- 13:05Speaker 2: top five in the in the past defense. So I'm
- 13:10Speaker 2: I'm worried constantly of what could happen with the Lions
- 13:14Speaker 2: because in the past we have lost games in an
- 13:18Speaker 2: instant and this is the first time in my life
- 13:22Speaker 2: this year and last year where we have been winning
- 13:25Speaker 2: those games. So I'm still way too familiar with the
- 13:28Speaker 2: one play going the other direction.
- 13:29Speaker 1: And it's it's it is. You have an interestingly difficult
- 13:33Speaker 1: this So it's Thanksgiving week. You guys play on Thanksgiving
- 13:35Speaker 1: every year. You need to send a postcard to the
- 13:39Speaker 1: Minnesota Vikings organization for breaking the Bear's spirit in that game,
- 13:43Speaker 1: like that loss, that loss after getting a field goal
- 13:47Speaker 1: block to so those last two losses, you go, Okay,
- 13:50Speaker 1: that's a tough thing to recover from because if they'd
- 13:52Speaker 1: have been picking up some momentum, you know, with the new.
- 13:54Speaker 3: Coordin, especially with the locker room turmoil they have.
- 13:56Speaker 1: Yeah, with the new coordinator is helping. Like, I think,
- 14:00Speaker 1: this is a sneaky, big moment in your season. You
- 14:03Speaker 1: gotta go out and you gotta do exactly what you're
- 14:05Speaker 1: supposed to do. If something goes weird and something goes
- 14:08Speaker 1: wrong and you lose this game, goodness, gracious, buddy, you
- 14:13Speaker 1: go Packers Bills Bears again, and who knows what that
- 14:18Speaker 1: Niners will be before you get us to get to
- 14:20Speaker 1: the end of season. You are in that situation where's
- 14:24Speaker 1: there's no weirdly at ten and one, and as the
- 14:26Speaker 1: best team in football, you have a no room for
- 14:29Speaker 1: error game because of how good the division is. On
- 14:33Speaker 1: Thanksgiving we have now, I do think, I do think
- 14:36Speaker 1: that Dolphins are gonna come in and smack the Packers around.
- 14:40Speaker 1: I really think that. I know too, it doesn't play
- 14:42Speaker 1: well in the cold weather, but I think we're gonna be.
- 14:45Speaker 3: He's been playing lights out since he got back.
- 14:47Speaker 1: We are gonna be enjoying pie. Well, green Bay gets
- 14:51Speaker 1: smacked around.
- 14:53Speaker 3: I really really hope that is.
- 14:55Speaker 2: I just need to believe that if green Bay is
- 14:57Speaker 2: getting smacked around by Miami. Come that night, I will
- 15:01Speaker 2: make some sort of margarita and top it with spray cheese.
- 15:05Speaker 3: All right, That's what I will do.
- 15:07Speaker 1: Let me tell you what the most Viking thing in
- 15:09Speaker 1: the history of being a Viking fans. You somehow blow
- 15:12Speaker 1: it against the Bears. The Dolphins go in and smack
- 15:15Speaker 1: around the Packers, and we walk into Sunday against the
- 15:19Speaker 1: Cardinals with everything in front of us at this state, Mike,
- 15:25Speaker 1: And I'm not saying they should be I'm just telling
- 15:27Speaker 1: you the mental makeup of this state as sports fans,
- 15:31Speaker 1: they're like I think, if they somehow win that game
- 15:33Speaker 1: against the Cardinals, you'll just hear the whole stadium instead
- 15:36Speaker 1: of the skull chant, You'll just hear them go oh,
- 15:39Speaker 1: and it's just them exhaling after a three and a
- 15:43Speaker 1: half hour breath.
- 15:44Speaker 2: Hold. Well, I don't think you have to worry about
- 15:46Speaker 2: I'm very confident going in against the Bears own for.
- 15:50Speaker 3: A few reasons.
- 15:51Speaker 1: I love that for you.
- 15:52Speaker 2: It's home. It's a home game, which obviously huge. It
- 15:55Speaker 2: is up until these past few years, like the Thanksgiving
- 15:59Speaker 2: game was the only nationally televised game we had. It
- 16:02Speaker 2: was It's always been a big deal for Lions fans,
- 16:06Speaker 2: and the last few years on Thanksgiving, we have lost
- 16:10Speaker 2: at the end of the game. We have lost at
- 16:12Speaker 2: the end of the fourth quarter on some crazy kick
- 16:15Speaker 2: or some blown cover like we have just this is
- 16:18Speaker 2: a game that Dan Campbell is like, we are winning
- 16:20Speaker 2: this and then we're going and we're handing out turkeys
- 16:23Speaker 2: to the community. I'm confident we're winning this game.
- 16:26Speaker 1: Is there any part of you that's sitting around wondering
- 16:32Speaker 1: if and so with the Vikings, it's always the kicker,
- 16:35Speaker 1: Like I know every as Parker Romo lined up to
- 16:39Speaker 1: kick the even I was going, just go get the touchdown.
- 16:42Speaker 1: Why do we got to risk it? Like yeah, you're
- 16:44Speaker 1: just waiting for the kicker thing to happen. Is there
- 16:47Speaker 1: any part of you in Detroit that is just sitting
- 16:49Speaker 1: there going when is Dan Campbell gonna Dan Campbell? When
- 16:55Speaker 1: is that? Because I would argue, now, I think you're
- 16:58Speaker 1: giving me a look right now, so you're not gonna
- 16:59Speaker 1: lie what I'm about to say.
- 17:01Speaker 3: I'm hoping to understand what you're saying, because Dan Campbell
- 17:04Speaker 3: always is Dan Campbell's.
- 17:05Speaker 1: Yes, but there's a you can Campbell good and you
- 17:08Speaker 1: can Campbell bad, and so I think the Campbell gamble,
- 17:12Speaker 1: the Campbell gamble, that's how is that not a t s?
- 17:16Speaker 3: Not a thing?
- 17:17Speaker 1: How? Yeah, that's Jay? Can we trademark that? Go ahead? Well,
- 17:20Speaker 1: the show's going, can we go ahead and trademark that.
- 17:23Speaker 1: So we were talking about the Bills and that big
- 17:25Speaker 1: Bills Chiefs game.
- 17:27Speaker 2: We played last year on Thanksgiving, which is why you
- 17:29Speaker 2: lost really excited for that Bill's game coming in the
- 17:31Speaker 2: last seconds.
- 17:32Speaker 1: So when Josh Allen what I believe to be the
- 17:35Speaker 1: play of the year thus far, fourth and two, they
- 17:37Speaker 1: go for it in their own zone, Josh Allen picks
- 17:39Speaker 1: it up on a scramble, gets all the way in
- 17:41Speaker 1: the inn zone, scores a touchdown. You know, Nick Wright
- 17:44Speaker 1: said this thing where he's like he thinks Josh Allen
- 17:46Speaker 1: is the greatest scrambling quarterback of all time, not running
- 17:49Speaker 1: but like on a design pass play, the most devastating
- 17:52Speaker 1: scrambler of all time, which is kind of hard to
- 17:54Speaker 1: argue with.
- 17:55Speaker 3: But I got a real issue with Nick Wright his
- 17:58Speaker 3: hair that he called Jared Goff.
- 18:01Speaker 2: He's like, any civilian could run the Lions offense, and
- 18:04Speaker 2: I'm like, you're obviously not looking at statistics.
- 18:06Speaker 1: I love that you've joined the real NFL world where
- 18:09Speaker 1: your team is relevant enough that you can start hating
- 18:13Speaker 1: certain analysts. That's how you know.
- 18:15Speaker 3: Before we just hated all of them because they were right.
- 18:19Speaker 1: That's how you know it matters. We're like, we hate
- 18:22Speaker 1: Nick right in Detroit.
- 18:24Speaker 3: I hate him.
- 18:25Speaker 2: No other, no other quarterback in the league is getting chanted.
- 18:29Speaker 2: Just Disney World broke out in a Jared Goff chant
- 18:32Speaker 2: last night. It's awesome. Don't you talk about that, Nick.
- 18:35Speaker 2: I'm sorry, go on, I'm upset.
- 18:39Speaker 1: So when you are in that fourth and two, I
- 18:43Speaker 1: think analytics conventional with him. They all have to be
- 18:47Speaker 1: set on top of the reality of the situation. And
- 18:51Speaker 1: that reality is you cannot give Patrick Mahomes the ball back.
- 18:55Speaker 1: You can't. You can't give him the ball back. Like
- 18:58Speaker 1: who you are playing against matters. And the interesting thing
- 19:02Speaker 1: about Dan Campbell is he and his Campbell gamble have
- 19:07Speaker 1: been immune to influence by situation or opponent. And I
- 19:13Speaker 1: thought that is what cost them the game last year
- 19:15Speaker 1: against the San Francisco forty nine ers. But I haven't
- 19:19Speaker 1: seen it this year. I've seen it in a Vikings game.
- 19:21Speaker 1: I've watched him, I've watched him cost them a Vikings game,
- 19:25Speaker 1: but I haven't seen it this year. So are do
- 19:27Speaker 1: you guys believe because of how good Ben Johnson's been
- 19:30Speaker 1: and all this, do you do you believe that the
- 19:34Speaker 1: that is behind you? Or are you kind of wary
- 19:37Speaker 1: of a moment where the Campbell gamble doesn't recognize its
- 19:42Speaker 1: surroundings and starts screaming in a room full of people.
- 19:47Speaker 2: I can't I cannot go against the Campbell gamble because
- 19:53Speaker 2: of how often it has worked out for us. If
- 19:57Speaker 2: I I feel like if I get mad at once
- 20:00Speaker 2: situation where he gambles and it doesn't.
- 20:04Speaker 1: Know why, why can't you say why can't you say
- 20:06Speaker 1: we want you to Campbell gamble? But also recognize the
- 20:09Speaker 1: gravity of the moment.
- 20:11Speaker 2: I think he believes. I think he believes in his team.
- 20:13Speaker 2: I think he believes in I mean that's why you
- 20:15Speaker 2: constantly see us running on third down and twelve, because
- 20:19Speaker 2: he knows we can get six yards and then we
- 20:21Speaker 2: can convert on a fourth and six. Like he believes
- 20:24Speaker 2: in our offensive line. He believes in Jared Goff's command
- 20:27Speaker 2: of the offense. I mean, you've seen far less. I
- 20:31Speaker 2: mean when he's when he came to Detroit. The Campbell
- 20:33Speaker 2: gamble was I'm gonna fake punt. I'm gonna fake punt
- 20:36Speaker 2: and we're gonna get a first down that way. And
- 20:38Speaker 2: then as the years have progressed, it is no longer
- 20:41Speaker 2: like hey, I mean, there's a fake punt in there
- 20:43Speaker 2: every once in a while, but it's not a special
- 20:46Speaker 2: teams gamble. It is my offense is gonna run it
- 20:48Speaker 2: down your throat or I'm gonna make you think you
- 20:50Speaker 2: are and then I'm gonna dump it off across the middle.
- 20:53Speaker 3: I just I can't.
- 20:55Speaker 2: It's worked far too many times to where I if
- 20:59Speaker 2: it goes bad once.
- 21:01Speaker 1: So if he makes a decision in an AFC champion
- 21:05Speaker 1: or in an NFC championship game or a super Bowl
- 21:07Speaker 1: when there's a high level opponent on the other side,
- 21:10Speaker 1: like like the like the last year with this forty
- 21:13Speaker 1: nine ers, when he should have taken those field goals,
- 21:15Speaker 1: in my opinion, are punted, you will you And I'm
- 21:19Speaker 1: not I'm not pushing, I'm not bullying. It's just a
- 21:21Speaker 1: genuine question from a fan psychology standpoint, if he does
- 21:25Speaker 1: that in an NFC championship or a super Bowl, you
- 21:28Speaker 1: will take solace in the idea like, well, we wouldn't
- 21:31Speaker 1: be here if he didn't do that every time. That's
- 21:33Speaker 1: that's what you can walk away with.
- 21:36Speaker 2: I do believe that we wouldn't have been in the
- 21:40Speaker 2: u NFC Championship if we didn't have a few Campbell gambles.
- 21:45Speaker 2: I mean, it just it just wouldn't have happened. So
- 21:47Speaker 2: the fact that Dan Campbell, like I said, Dan Campbell
- 21:50Speaker 2: is always going to Dan Campbell, that that is exactly
- 21:53Speaker 2: what he does, I would be I would be more
- 21:55Speaker 2: concerned if he changed his mentality because that's not this
- 21:59Speaker 2: team that's at all.
- 22:00Speaker 1: Well, tough boys play tough because when they're tough, they
- 22:03Speaker 1: need to be tough, and it ain't no room for
- 22:05Speaker 1: not being tough. Like, isn't there some nuance? Isn't there
- 22:08Speaker 1: when you have a coaching staff large enough to fill
- 22:12Speaker 1: an entire jet, which is what most professional sports organizations are.
- 22:16Speaker 1: Don't don't you wonder as a fan, don't you go, Okay,
- 22:18Speaker 1: who's the guy you have hired? Delane and the coaches
- 22:20Speaker 1: here and go, hey, Dan, they're the best defensive football
- 22:24Speaker 1: And you go up ten here and there's only four
- 22:26Speaker 1: minutes to play, let's go ahead and go up ten here, Dan, like,
- 22:28Speaker 1: isn't that.
- 22:29Speaker 3: Well, it's it's not. I will.
- 22:30Speaker 2: I know for a fact that it is not just
- 22:33Speaker 2: Dan Campbell riding his hunch. I know that there is
- 22:36Speaker 2: an entire section of their coaching box that is dedicated
- 22:40Speaker 2: to analytics and the particular situations like he's informed.
- 22:44Speaker 3: Dan Campbell will have you believe he.
- 22:46Speaker 2: Is just some guy who throws bills a hay in
- 22:49Speaker 2: his spare time. But that is Dan Campbell is an
- 22:52Speaker 2: educated dude, Dan Campbell. He may not, be, in my opinion,
- 22:57Speaker 2: the greatest x's and o's guys, but I think Dan
- 23:00Speaker 2: Campbell situationally does not get enough credit for how good
- 23:04Speaker 2: he is.
- 23:04Speaker 3: He just sees the game a little differently.
- 23:06Speaker 1: Does your defensive coordinator? They call plays? Right?
- 23:09Speaker 3: Both of our coordinators call plays?
- 23:10Speaker 1: Yeah? See I really to me, that's my favorite part
- 23:13Speaker 1: about Dan Campbell. I like the old school like CEO
- 23:19Speaker 1: of a football team, Like I love what we have.
- 23:22Speaker 1: But I was a Denny Green fan. I like the
- 23:24Speaker 1: old days where you're like Brian Billick's your O coordinator,
- 23:27Speaker 1: Tony Denji's your decordinator. I do think there's something to
- 23:31Speaker 1: be said for that, because I think everything you hear
- 23:33Speaker 1: about Campbell is he's a good leader, and he's a
- 23:36Speaker 1: good motivator. It's like being you know, yeah, it's like
- 23:39Speaker 1: being a president. It's all who you put in charge
- 23:42Speaker 1: of stuff, right, and how you support them. Sure, and
- 23:45Speaker 1: so I do. I will give you that. I do
- 23:48Speaker 1: really like that about him. And then I think that
- 23:50Speaker 1: allows him to succeed at what he's very good at
- 23:54Speaker 1: and keeps him from not succeeding at the things he's
- 23:58Speaker 1: not good at.
- 24:00Speaker 2: What you have to consider too with Dan Campbell is
- 24:02Speaker 2: once you've earned Dan Campbell's trust, you have it. When
- 24:06Speaker 2: we when we first hired Dan Campbell, Anthony Lynn came
- 24:09Speaker 2: in and he was our offensive coordinator, and that offense
- 24:11Speaker 2: was not hummin it was not doing great. Ben Johnson
- 24:14Speaker 2: was on that staff as the tight ends coach. He
- 24:16Speaker 2: took over as the interim offensive coordinator, not even like
- 24:19Speaker 2: just outright got the job, and Dan Campbell called the
- 24:22Speaker 2: plays for a few times, like for I don't know,
- 24:25Speaker 2: a few games until close to the end of the season,
- 24:27Speaker 2: and then he started just slowly giving Ben Johnson right,
- 24:30Speaker 2: you call it here, you call it here, and we
- 24:32Speaker 2: would we would get big, big yards all of a sudden.
- 24:36Speaker 2: Ben Johnson is calling the game, and now he's this
- 24:38Speaker 2: mad scientist who's built the entire offense around Jared Goff.
- 24:42Speaker 3: I think that's why.
- 24:43Speaker 2: I think that's why Nick Wright is an idiot, because
- 24:46Speaker 2: they built this offense around.
- 24:48Speaker 1: All roads lead Nick Right.
- 24:51Speaker 2: They built this offense around Jared Goff, so like, I
- 24:54Speaker 2: don't think any civilian could run it. And I think
- 24:57Speaker 2: I think he did exactly what he wanted to do.
- 24:59Speaker 2: He wanted someone to talk about some bad opinion that
- 25:03Speaker 2: he has instead of just saying this is just a
- 25:06Speaker 2: guy with hair, like I know what it's like to
- 25:08Speaker 2: be a guy with hair.
- 25:09Speaker 3: That he's an idiot.
- 25:10Speaker 1: Here here, here's the thing. We're just gonna find out
- 25:13Speaker 1: because he's got the contract, and over the next couple
- 25:16Speaker 1: of years, the roster is gonna change.
- 25:19Speaker 2: I agree, But that contract is gonna look good as
- 25:21Speaker 2: the years go on, maybe comparatively, maybe, I think so.
- 25:25Speaker 1: I'm saying it might, you know, depends how much the
- 25:28Speaker 1: cap goes up. I'm not smart about that stuff, but
- 25:30Speaker 1: I mean it's one of two things. They voted Josh
- 25:33Speaker 1: Allen in the Players Survey the most overrated quarterback in
- 25:37Speaker 1: the NFL. I think everybody thought Diggs was gonna leave
- 25:40Speaker 1: and they were gonna fall apart, and it just turns
- 25:42Speaker 1: out the exact opposite has happened, and he's one of
- 25:45Speaker 1: those guys.
- 25:46Speaker 3: The mahomes Hill situation.
- 25:48Speaker 1: Yeah, he can carry a team through his big salary,
- 25:51Speaker 1: and it'll be really interesting to see if he's one
- 25:53Speaker 1: of those guys if Ben Johnson finally decides he wants
- 25:56Speaker 1: to be a pro football head coach somewhere. But I
- 26:01Speaker 1: don't know, man. Here's what I will tell you. Here's
- 26:03Speaker 1: what I know what you want. I know that you
- 26:06Speaker 1: want to win every game the rest of the way,
- 26:07Speaker 1: finish sixteen in one and be the one seed. I
- 26:10Speaker 1: think that makes a lot of sense to me. What
- 26:13Speaker 1: I would like is I would like the Vikings to
- 26:17Speaker 1: win the next couple of games, and I'd like you
- 26:20Speaker 1: to drop one of the next two, preferably to I
- 26:23Speaker 1: think green Bay is who you have af does it
- 26:25Speaker 1: go Bears and then green Bay.
- 26:27Speaker 2: Green Bays just before the Niners. Yeah, Green So December fifth,
- 26:31Speaker 2: we have the Packers, we have two Thursday games.
- 26:33Speaker 1: Yeah, So I would like the Packers to drop one
- 26:37Speaker 1: to the Dolphins. Then I would like them to beat
- 26:40Speaker 1: you I'd like us to win two and a couple
- 26:43Speaker 1: of weeks from now, I'd like this just to be
- 26:45Speaker 1: a big, gross, ugly meat grinder with four games to
- 26:52Speaker 1: play and four games in which we play. We play
- 26:55Speaker 1: the Packers and the Lions. There's two games there you play.
- 26:59Speaker 1: I think at least us do you play the that'll
- 27:02Speaker 1: be have you played the Packers yet?
- 27:04Speaker 2: Let's we got to go back to the Dan Campbell mentality.
- 27:06Speaker 2: We are playing the Bears twice, those are division games.
- 27:09Speaker 2: Dan Campbell gets up for those games. We are then
- 27:12Speaker 2: playing the Packers, who I'm and Ross Saint Brown has
- 27:15Speaker 2: really lit a fire under this team as far as
- 27:18Speaker 2: like f the Packers, you know, like that's the whole mentality,
- 27:22Speaker 2: that's our I mean, that's they're They're trying to make
- 27:25Speaker 2: this rivalry like a thing. But we're at home. Our
- 27:28Speaker 2: home games are different. So we've got home this week
- 27:31Speaker 2: against Chicago. That's gonna make a difference. The hatred for
- 27:34Speaker 2: Green Bay, especially since like elgind Jenkins or something after
- 27:37Speaker 2: the last time we played him. They go, I mean, yeah,
- 27:40Speaker 2: the team that made more plays one, but the better
- 27:42Speaker 2: team didn't win. That is bulletin board material that they've
- 27:45Speaker 2: been looking at ever since the Bills. We play thereafter
- 27:48Speaker 2: they just barely beat us last year during Thanksgiving. Dan
- 27:52Speaker 2: Campbell is going to make sure that they know that.
- 27:55Speaker 2: Then after the Bills, we've got the Bears again, which
- 27:57Speaker 2: is going to be at Chicago.
- 27:58Speaker 3: That's a trap game. May then we have the forty
- 28:01Speaker 3: nine ers.
- 28:02Speaker 2: Who I mean, can you talk about a more revenge
- 28:05Speaker 2: game than the NFC Championship? The Chicago Bears game away
- 28:09Speaker 2: is the is the scariest one.
- 28:11Speaker 1: For me more than the Bills.
- 28:14Speaker 2: I think the Lions get up for the Bills, and
- 28:15Speaker 2: I think we're playing at home. The Bills are certainly
- 28:18Speaker 2: maybe the best team that we have left. But I
- 28:21Speaker 2: think that I think that the team gets up for
- 28:25Speaker 2: that game, especially at home.
- 28:27Speaker 1: What are you gonna do? You go to the Thanksgiving game?
- 28:30Speaker 2: No, I have we go over to my wife's family's house,
- 28:34Speaker 2: of which there are like twenty seven people.
- 28:36Speaker 3: There and we're all watching the game.
- 28:38Speaker 1: That'd be a terrible like that alone, like a giant
- 28:42Speaker 1: family gathering where it used to be like we all
- 28:44Speaker 1: go there, we watched the Lions lose and we eat.
- 28:47Speaker 2: Now it's like we did that last year against the bills, dude.
- 28:51Speaker 2: It was one of my greatest memories on a holiday.
- 28:53Speaker 2: My entire family, like from my in laws who are
- 28:57Speaker 2: seventy to my youngest nephew who like eight at the time,
- 29:01Speaker 2: There's twenty seven people all around the TV collectively breathing
- 29:04Speaker 2: the same way big inhales, huge xhals, disappointment, excitement. It
- 29:10Speaker 2: was wonderful and I'm hoping that this year it ends
- 29:14Speaker 2: with the dub because that will be a friggin' party.
- 29:17Speaker 1: Well, I hope a couple of weeks from now, we're
- 29:20Speaker 1: just in a big gross meat grinder between the three
- 29:22Speaker 1: of us.
- 29:23Speaker 2: The phrase, I just want to say, the phrase big
- 29:25Speaker 2: gross meat grinder is super gross.
- 29:28Speaker 1: Yeah, no problem. That's actually the name of your guys' offense.
- 29:35Speaker 3: I don't know meat grinder.
- 29:37Speaker 1: Sure you know I am not a trash talker, but
- 29:40Speaker 1: I will be texting you on thanks Staven. I don't
- 29:42Speaker 1: have a good I don't have a good feeling about
- 29:44Speaker 1: this game for you, guys.
- 29:45Speaker 3: That's your heart speaking. That's your heart speaking.
- 29:47Speaker 1: Can I tell you why?
- 29:48Speaker 3: Absolutely? I hope you do.
- 29:50Speaker 1: The most likely outcome here is that the Bears season
- 29:53Speaker 1: just falls apart. It's already there but it just completely
- 29:56Speaker 1: falls apart and it tumbles to the end. Right, But
- 30:00Speaker 1: they have a pretty good defense.
- 30:02Speaker 2: Their defense is very good, but no defense has really
- 30:04Speaker 2: been able to have our offense.
- 30:05Speaker 1: So you know, we did pretty well against you. But
- 30:07Speaker 1: there's this other scenario where I think Caleb Williams is
- 30:10Speaker 1: gonna have a day.
- 30:11Speaker 3: He has to.
- 30:12Speaker 1: At some point, he's gonna have a day, and at
- 30:17Speaker 1: some point, you guys aren't gonna have a day.
- 30:23Speaker 3: And I think that was Houston.
- 30:25Speaker 1: Yeah, maybe, but Houston also didn't have a day. I
- 30:28Speaker 1: think there's a chance I said it on last week's show.
- 30:30Speaker 1: I'm gonna say it again. A confluence of events creates
- 30:34Speaker 1: a very tricky Thanksgiving for you. Now. I'm sure you'll
- 30:36Speaker 1: text me when you guys win fifty two to eight.
- 30:38Speaker 3: I'm a very humble fan. I won't do that.
- 30:41Speaker 1: No, I don't think you'll be cocky about it, but
- 30:42Speaker 1: I think you'll be like, hey, about that confluence of events.
- 30:46Speaker 1: I guess there wasn't one.
- 30:48Speaker 2: I love that you're saying confluence events of events right
- 30:51Speaker 2: after you said big gross meat grinder, thank you. That
- 30:54Speaker 2: could not be two more different speaking spells so intelligent
- 30:58Speaker 2: but so blue collar.
- 31:00Speaker 3: Both ends, but.
- 31:01Speaker 1: I'm gonna tell you, if you put them both in
- 31:02Speaker 1: a drawl, they sound like they matter together. Well, it
- 31:05Speaker 1: was just a confluence of event advance that put us
- 31:09Speaker 1: in a big, gross meat grinder.
- 31:11Speaker 2: And that's how we lost Uncle Bill her chewed him up.
- 31:16Speaker 1: And then and that is why we will. We bought
- 31:19Speaker 1: this year's turkey in honor of Uncle Bill. Zach thank
- 31:24Speaker 1: you for joining us. I hope, I I hope I
- 31:27Speaker 1: see you shortly on this show and discussing a game
- 31:31Speaker 1: that matters just a whole.
- 31:33Speaker 3: I do hope it matters. I do hope it matters.
- 31:35Speaker 1: I know you want that one seed, But can I
- 31:37Speaker 1: tell you how fun would it be if the last
- 31:41Speaker 1: game of the season between our two teams, because it's
- 31:45Speaker 1: in Detroit, right in Detroit, is the one seed and
- 31:51Speaker 1: the bye and the division on the line. God damn,
- 31:56Speaker 1: that'd be good.
- 31:56Speaker 2: Oh dude, I think Week seventeen is going to matter,
- 31:59Speaker 2: like I don't think that where either of us are
- 32:01Speaker 2: playing second stringers.
- 32:04Speaker 1: We will see. I hope that's right. I hope that's right.
- 32:06Speaker 3: Happy Thanksgiving, sig, enjoy your Thanksgiving.
- 32:09Speaker 1: What's your prediction? Give me the score prediction for your
- 32:11Speaker 1: Bears game.
- 32:11Speaker 2: For the Bears game, now, we didn't say there are
- 32:14Speaker 2: injuries on our team right now, so that is a concern.
- 32:17Speaker 2: What my prediction for the Bears game is going to
- 32:20Speaker 2: be twelve thirty families across the nation watching as the
- 32:25Speaker 2: Aal Honolulu Blue and who I believe to be the
- 32:28Speaker 2: true America's team is. Oh, by the way, that Giant's
- 32:33Speaker 2: Cowboys game is gonna be awful to Veto versus Cooper
- 32:37Speaker 2: Rush stop it. But I think the Bears Lions game
- 32:42Speaker 2: is going to end up being probably forty two to sixteen.
- 32:49Speaker 1: I love that and I will see you soon.
- 32:54Speaker 3: Bye, buddy.
- 32:55Speaker 1: Thanks again to Zach Martinez for joining the show. Thank
- 32:58Speaker 1: you guys for listening to our podcas cast feed while
- 33:00Speaker 1: you're here. Give us a review a rating. It helps
- 33:04Speaker 1: a ton. Also big thanks to Ticketmaster, the official ticket
- 33:08Speaker 1: marketplace of the Minnesota Vikings, for helping make this show happen.
- 33:12Speaker 1: We will see you all again next week.
