- 0:11Hello friends, it's Sean here. It's Tuesday, it's the 6th of
- 0:16January and well friends, today is officially the end of
- 0:19Christmas. You know how people talk about
- 0:21the 12 days of Christmas? Well, this is the last day, this
- 0:25is day #12 this is Epiphany. This is actually the day that
- 0:29people celebrate the arrival of the Magi, the three wise men.
- 0:32No, they didn't rock up on that night, elbowing the shepherds
- 0:36out of the way to get some space beside the Manger.
- 0:38No, they came a little while later.
- 0:40And this is the day that people celebrate that.
- 0:42So whether you are going to reorder your nativity scene or
- 0:48not, no matter what your day holds, it is so great to have
- 0:50your company. Because today is the day that we
- 0:54continue back in time, following Jesus and his disciples, seeing
- 0:59him first hand as he goes about this incredible work of ministry
- 1:04that has changed the face of the earth as we know it has changed
- 1:08humankind. And here we are, 2000 years
- 1:11later, still living with the daily reverberations of the
- 1:15story that we are going to share today.
- 1:17Oh, how amazing, captured for us, preserved so that the Holy
- 1:21Spirit can speak to us. Words of the living God.
- 1:25As we read this together today, our Holy Spirit, come challenge,
- 1:30delight, and inform us as we spend some time with you and in
- 1:36your company with the works and the words of Jesus.
- 1:41All right, friends, let us do it.
- 1:42Let's read together Luke chapter 8.
- 1:54Soon afterward, Jesus began a tour of the nearby towns and
- 1:57villages, preaching and announcing the good news about
- 2:00the Kingdom of God. He took his 12 disciples with
- 2:04him, along with some women who had been cured of evil spirits
- 2:07and diseases. Among them were Mary Magdalene,
- 2:11from whom he had cast out seven demons, Joanna, the wife of
- 2:15Chooser, Herod's business manager Susanna, and many others
- 2:20who were contributing from their own resources to support Jesus
- 2:23and his disciples. One day, Jesus told a story in
- 2:28the form of a parable to a large crowd that had gathered from
- 2:31many towns to hear him. A farmer went out to plant his
- 2:35seed. As he scattered it across his
- 2:38field, some fell on a footpath where it was stepped on, and the
- 2:42birds ate it. Other seed fell among rocks.
- 2:45It began to grow, but the plant soon wilted and died for a lack
- 2:49of moisture. Other seed fell among thorns
- 2:53that grew up with it and choked out the tender plants.
- 2:57Still other seed fell on fertile soil.
- 3:00This seed grew and produced a crop that was 100 times as much
- 3:05as had been planted. When he had said this, he called
- 3:08out. Anyone with ears to hear should
- 3:11listen and understand. His disciples asked him what
- 3:15this parable meant. He replied, You are permitted to
- 3:19understand the secrets of the Kingdom of God.
- 3:21But I use parables to teach the others so that the scriptures
- 3:25might be fulfilled. When they look, they won't
- 3:28really see. When they hear, they won't
- 3:31really understand. This is the meaning of the
- 3:34parable. The seed is God's word.
- 3:37The seeds that fell on the footpath represent those who
- 3:40hear the message, only to have the devil come and take it away
- 3:44from their hearts and prevent them from believing and being
- 3:47saved. The seeds on the rocky soil
- 3:49represent those who hear the message and receive it with joy,
- 3:53but since they don't have deep roots, they believe for a while,
- 3:57then they fall away when they face temptation.
- 4:00The seeds that fell among the thorns represent those who hear
- 4:03the message, but all too quickly the messages crowded out by the
- 4:08cares and riches and pleasures of this life, so they never grow
- 4:12into maturity. And the seeds that fell on the
- 4:15good soil represent honest, good hearted people who hear God's
- 4:19word, cling to it, and patiently produce a huge harvest.
- 4:27No one lights a lamp and then covers it with a bowl or hides
- 4:30it under a bed. A lamp is placed on a stand
- 4:33where it's light can be seen by all who enter the house.
- 4:37For all that is secret will eventually be brought into the
- 4:40open, and everything that is concealed will be brought to
- 4:44light and made known to all. So pay attention to how you
- 4:49hear. To those who listen to my
- 4:51teaching, more understanding will be given, but for those who
- 4:55are not listening, even what they think they understand will
- 4:58be taken away from them. Then Jesus mother and brothers
- 5:04came to see him, but they couldn't get to him because of
- 5:06the crowd. Someone told Jesus, Your mother
- 5:09and your brothers are standing outside and they want to see
- 5:12you. Jesus replied.
- 5:15My mother and my brothers are all those who hear God's word
- 5:19and obey it. One day Jesus said to his
- 5:24disciples, Let's cross to the other side of the lake.
- 5:28So they got into a boat and started out.
- 5:30As they sailed the cross, Jesus settled down for a nap.
- 5:34But soon a fierce storm came down on the lake.
- 5:38The boat was filling with water, and they were in real danger.
- 5:41The disciples went and woke him, shouting, Master, Master, we're
- 5:45going to drown. When Jesus woke up, he rebuked
- 5:51the wind and the raging waves. Suddenly the storm stopped and
- 5:57all was calm. Then he asked them, Where is
- 6:00your faith? The disciples were terrified and
- 6:04amazed. Who is this man?
- 6:07They asked each other. When he gives a command, even
- 6:10the wind and waves obey him. So they arrived in the region of
- 6:16the Gerasenes, across the lake from Galilee.
- 6:19As Jesus was climbing out of the boat, a man who was possessed by
- 6:23demons came out to meet him. For a long time he had been
- 6:26homeless and naked, living in the tombs outside the town.
- 6:31As soon as he saw Jesus, he shrieked and fell down in front
- 6:35of him. Then he screamed.
- 6:37Why aren't you interfering with me?
- 6:40Jesus, son of the Most High God, please, I beg you, don't torture
- 6:44me. For Jesus had already commanded
- 6:47the evil spirit to come out of him.
- 6:49This spirit had often taken control of the man, even when he
- 6:54was placed under guard and put in chains and shackles.
- 6:57He simply broke them and rushed out into the wilderness,
- 7:01completely under the demons power.
- 7:04Jesus demanded. What is your name, Legion?
- 7:09He replied, for he was filled with many demons.
- 7:12The demons kept begging Jesus not to send them into the
- 7:16bottomless pit. There happened to be a large
- 7:19herd of pigs feeding on the hillside nearby, and the demons
- 7:22begged him to let them enter into the pigs, so Jesus gave
- 7:26this permission. Then the demons came out of the
- 7:30man and enter the pigs, and the entire herd plunged down the
- 7:35steep hillside into the lake and drowned.
- 7:39When the herdsmen saw it, they fled to the nearby town and the
- 7:43surrounding countryside, spreading the news as they ran.
- 7:46People rushed out to see what had happened.
- 7:49A crowd sued and gathered around Jesus, and they saw the man who
- 7:52had been freed from the demons. He was sitting at Jesus feet,
- 7:57fully clothed and perfectly sane, and they were all afraid.
- 8:02Then those who had seen what happened told the others how the
- 8:05demon possessed man had been healed, and all the people in
- 8:09the region of the Gerasenes begged Jesus to go away and
- 8:13leave them alone, for a great wave of fear swept over them.
- 8:18So Jesus returned to the boat and left, crossing back to the
- 8:22other side of the lake. The man who had been freed from
- 8:25the demons begged to go with him, but Jesus sent him home,
- 8:28saying no. Go back to your family and tell
- 8:32them everything God has done for you.
- 8:35So he went all through the town, proclaiming the great things
- 8:39Jesus had done for him. On the other side of the lake,
- 8:43the crowds welcomed Jesus because they had been waiting
- 8:46for him. Then a man named Gyrus, a leader
- 8:50of the local synagogue, came and fell at Jesus feet, pleading
- 8:54with him to come home with him. His only daughter, who was about
- 8:5712 years old, was dying. As Jesus went with him, he was
- 9:02surrounded by crowds. A woman in the crowd had
- 9:06suffered for 12 years with constant bleeding, and she could
- 9:09find no cure. Coming up behind Jesus, she
- 9:13touched the fringe of his robe. Immediately the bleeding
- 9:17stopped. Who touched me?
- 9:20Jesus asked. Everyone denied it and Peter
- 9:23said, Master, this whole crowd is pressing up against you.
- 9:27But Jesus said someone deliberately touched me, for I
- 9:31felt healing power go out from me.
- 9:34When the woman realised that she could not stay hidden, she began
- 9:37to tremble and fell to her knees in front of him.
- 9:41The whole crowd heard her explain why she had touched him
- 9:45and that she had been immediately healed.
- 9:48Daughter, he said to her, Your faith has made you well go in
- 9:54peace. While he was still speaking to
- 9:57her, a messenger arrived from the home of Jairus, the leader
- 10:01of the synagogue. He told him, your daughter is
- 10:05dead, there's no use travelling the teacher now.
- 10:09But when Jesus heard what had happened, he said to Jairus,
- 10:13don't be afraid, just have faith and she will be healed.
- 10:18When they arrived at the house, Jesus wouldn't let anyone go in
- 10:21with him except Peter, John, James and the little girl's
- 10:26father and mother. The house was filled with people
- 10:29weeping and wailing. But he said, stop the weeping,
- 10:32she isn't dead, she's only asleep.
- 10:35But the crowd laughed at him because they all knew she had
- 10:38died. Then Jesus took her by the hand
- 10:42and said in a loud voice, My child, get up.
- 10:48And at that moment her life returned and she immediately
- 10:52stood up. Then Jesus told them to give her
- 10:55something to eat. Her parents were overwhelmed,
- 10:59but Jesus insisted that they not tell anyone what had happened.
- 11:12Oh Jesus, there is so much in this chapter, so much of your
- 11:17compassion, so much of your kindness, so much of your clear
- 11:22teaching and Lord, reading through this today, this one
- 11:27part, the end of the parallel of the soul.
- 11:29Lord just stood out for your words to us.
- 11:32Say that that final seed that fell in the good soil is good
- 11:37hearted people who hear Your word, who cling to it and
- 11:41patiently produce a huge harvest.
- 11:45Lord, I pray that You would turn us into those people, that You
- 11:50would transform our hearts so they could truly be good.
- 11:55That You could transform our ears so that they can be bent to
- 11:58hear Your words, and that You transform our spirits to give us
- 12:03patience so that we can continually and patiently work
- 12:08for Your Kingdom to see a huge harvest be brought to bear.
- 12:16Jesus, you are the way, You are the truth, and it is only
- 12:21through you that we find salvation and a way back to the
- 12:25Father. So, Lord, I pray that you
- 12:28continue to do this good work in US, transforming our hearts, our
- 12:32ears, and our spirits to be Your Kingdom people.
- 12:37We love you, Jesus, and we pray all of this in your saving name,
- 12:42Amen.
