- 0:01Speaker 1: Welcome to Dirty Rush, the truth about sorority life with
- 0:04Speaker 1: your hosts, me, Gia Giudice.
- 0:06Speaker 2: Daisy Kent, and Jennifer Fessler.
- 0:12Speaker 3: Hi, everybody.
- 0:12Speaker 2: Welcome back to another episode of Dirty Rush. I'm Trista Sutter,
- 0:16Speaker 2: and I am so excited to always come on this
- 0:19Speaker 2: podcast and host because I just love the Greek life.
- 0:23Speaker 2: The Greek life to me gave me so much life
- 0:26Speaker 2: in college. I still, to this day, talk to my
- 0:29Speaker 2: sorority sister's And I just love being able to learn
- 0:33Speaker 2: everything because in this new phase of life, I am
- 0:36Speaker 2: the mom of a college student and a high school senior.
- 0:42Speaker 2: She might be involved in the Greek system, and I'm
- 0:44Speaker 2: just learning all kinds of nuggets from this podcast. So
- 0:48Speaker 2: we're going to dive in today to talk about Parents Weekend,
- 0:53Speaker 2: which I'm so excited about, especially because I am heading
- 0:56Speaker 2: to Parents Weekend at CU Boulder. It is this weekend,
- 1:00Speaker 2: and we've got a couple of college students from the
- 1:06Speaker 2: University of And we're going to talk about what actually
- 1:11Speaker 2: goes down when parents come into town. We're going to
- 1:14Speaker 2: talk about the parties, the tailgates, introducing their friends to
- 1:20Speaker 2: their family and what Parents Weekend truly looks like. So
- 1:25Speaker 2: let's get into it. And I'd like to welcome Stassi
- 1:28Speaker 2: and her roommate. Hi.
- 1:32Speaker 1: Hi, girls.
- 1:33Speaker 4: How are you?
- 1:34Speaker 5: We're good.
- 1:35Speaker 6: How are you doing?
- 1:36Speaker 2: I'm good.
- 1:37Speaker 6: Okay.
- 1:37Speaker 2: Tell me, is it, tell me how to pronounce your
- 1:40Speaker 2: names and then what school you're at and what grade
- 1:43Speaker 2: you're in.
- 1:44Speaker 4: I'm Saucy.
- 1:45Speaker 3: I'm a senior and I'm in Calpa.
- 1:48Speaker 1: Okay.
- 1:49Speaker 4: I'm Sarah.
- 1:50Speaker 7: I'm a senior and I'm not in a stretch.
- 1:54Speaker 3: Okay.
- 1:54Speaker 2: No, that's great.
- 1:55Speaker 3: It's all good.
- 1:56Speaker 2: Actually. I want to hear about that because I was
- 1:58Speaker 2: just talking to our producer about how I'm going to
- 2:01Speaker 2: parents weekend. My son is at CU Boulder and, And
- 2:03Speaker 2: we're going this weekend and he's not in a fraternity.
- 2:08Speaker 2: So I really want to pick your brain, especially to
- 2:12Speaker 2: find out, you know, what you do at parents weekend
- 2:15Speaker 2: when you're not going to parties at a fraternity or
- 2:17Speaker 2: sorority house.
- 2:19Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 2:20Speaker 6: You're nodding.
- 2:21Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 2:21Speaker 2: So we'll get into it.
- 2:22Speaker 1: Okay.
- 2:23Speaker 2: So what does a typical parent parents weekend look like
- 2:27Speaker 2: at UC Berkeley?
- 2:29Speaker 1: I feel like for us, it's very much like, kind
- 2:32Speaker 1: of babysitting and like it's a lot of like planning
- 2:35Speaker 1: of like what's gonna happen each day like they're gonna
- 2:39Speaker 1: come in Thursday they're gonna have to do some dinner
- 2:42Speaker 1: of like just the two of us one day but
- 2:45Speaker 1: then they want to meet the friends the other day
- 2:46Speaker 1: and then it's like game day is a whole other
- 2:49Speaker 1: whole other thing I think it's just a lot of
- 2:51Speaker 1: planning about like which dinners we're gonna do and which
- 2:54Speaker 1: how early we're gonna have to wake up for game
- 2:56Speaker 1: day to start drinking and then like if they're actually
- 2:59Speaker 1: going to make it to the football game or not.
- 3:00Speaker 1: Cause like the dad wants to go to the football game,
- 3:02Speaker 1: but then like the girls want to keep like partying
- 3:04Speaker 1: at the tailgate. And like, it's just a lot of
- 3:06Speaker 1: like rigmarole back and forth of just like, no, we're
- 3:09Speaker 1: going here next.
- 3:10Speaker 4: We're going here.
- 3:10Speaker 3: And it's just like dragging your parents around to the
- 3:12Speaker 3: next thing. And they just have to hang.
- 3:13Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 3:14Speaker 2: Do you look forward to it? Are you stressful about,
- 3:16Speaker 2: are you stressed about it ever? I mean, being a senior,
- 3:19Speaker 2: you've been through it a lot. Is it a fun
- 3:22Speaker 2: weekend for you or not so much?
- 3:24Speaker 4: It's fun. It's fun.
- 3:26Speaker 3: It's fun.
- 3:28Speaker 7: It's fun.
- 3:30Speaker 1: My first time doing it, I was so stressed out,
- 3:33Speaker 1: but I think now my brother, he also goes to
- 3:35Speaker 1: Alabama as in a fraternity there. So this was like
- 3:37Speaker 1: their eighth parents weekend. So at this point they're like, honestly,
- 3:40Speaker 1: like we're just coming to see you. We don't really
- 3:42Speaker 1: care about anything else.
- 3:44Speaker 2: Do your parents live in California or in Bama in Alabama?
- 3:49Speaker 1: Both our parents live in Southern California.
- 3:50Speaker 3: So they just do the flight up to Northern California.
- 3:53Speaker 2: Awesome.
- 3:54Speaker 8: Awesome.
- 3:55Speaker 2: Okay.
- 3:55Speaker 3: Tell me your story.
- 3:56Speaker 2: No, no sorority, but parents weekend.
- 4:00Speaker 6: Tell me how it goes.
- 4:01Speaker 2: Like, are you as stressed out planning or are there
- 4:04Speaker 2: as much as many activities? Tell me all the things.
- 4:08Speaker 7: Yes.
- 4:09Speaker 8: So my parents aren't really big partiers, but they're down
- 4:14Speaker 8: for whatever I'm pushing for, but there has to be
- 4:18Speaker 8: an itinerary and there has to be an organized schedule,
- 4:22Speaker 8: especially for my mom.
- 4:23Speaker 2: Can I interrupt you real quick? There has to be
- 4:26Speaker 2: an organized schedule. Are you saying, and you probably were
- 4:28Speaker 2: going to say this, so sorry. Is it just for
- 4:31Speaker 2: your parents or do you guys feel like there has
- 4:33Speaker 2: to be, like everyone at school feels like there has
- 4:36Speaker 2: to be an itinerary for parents weekend or is it
- 4:39Speaker 2: just your parents?
- 4:40Speaker 7: I feel like it's a pretty universal thing.
- 4:42Speaker 6: I feel like having parents.
- 4:43Speaker 7: Is like you're hosting your parents.
- 4:45Speaker 8: There's so much expectation and there's also like I can't
- 4:49Speaker 8: really show you how much of a degenerate I'm being.
- 4:51Speaker 7: So I have to put a lid on it a
- 4:53Speaker 7: little bit.
- 4:56Speaker 2: Yes, that's funny.
- 4:58Speaker 8: So you have to find that there's a good middle
- 5:00Speaker 8: ground you got to find for sure.
- 5:02Speaker 3: Usually start with like a breakfast.
- 5:05Speaker 5: Okay.
- 5:06Speaker 3: I'm taking notes.
- 5:07Speaker 7: We usually start with a breakfast and then my parents
- 5:12Speaker 7: will kind of be like, okay, like what's going to go,
- 5:14Speaker 7: what's going to go down tomorrow.
- 5:15Speaker 8: And we have to figure it out because I have
- 5:17Speaker 8: a little sister who's 13.
- 5:19Speaker 3: Okay.
- 5:21Speaker 7: Has been coming.
- 5:22Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 5:22Speaker 7: And she comes every year. So we have to figure
- 5:25Speaker 7: out what to do with her because I can't.
- 5:27Speaker 8: Really take her to, to a frat party or a
- 5:30Speaker 8: bar because obvious reasons. So I usually have to take
- 5:38Speaker 8: It's usually my parents deciding which parent is going to
- 5:41Speaker 8: sit it out and which parent's going to come with me.
- 5:43Speaker 3: Oh, okay.
- 5:44Speaker 2: So they're dividing and conquering.
- 5:45Speaker 7: Yeah, they divide and conquer for sure.
- 5:47Speaker 8: And then my sister usually comes for like the dinner
- 5:50Speaker 8: in between the game and then going out again.
- 5:53Speaker 2: Got it.
- 5:54Speaker 5: Yes.
- 5:55Speaker 7: But it's always been my mom that comes with me
- 5:58Speaker 7: and my dad will stay with my sister.
- 5:59Speaker 5: And my mom is, for lack of better words, wonderful
- 6:08Speaker 5: but extremely high maintenance.
- 6:10Speaker 8: Okay so when we were younger and not being in
- 6:13Speaker 8: a sorority like I couldn't really get into frats I
- 6:16Speaker 8: kind of had to like know people um so it's
- 6:20Speaker 8: really hard to get into the parties when I was
- 6:22Speaker 8: younger and she she'd be like wait I'm just coming
- 6:27Speaker 8: in you're not going to tell me that I can't
- 6:29Speaker 8: come into your room.
- 6:29Speaker 1: You go to the frat guys and be like, I
- 6:30Speaker 1: don't care what you guys have to say.
- 6:32Speaker 3: I'm getting it.
- 6:33Speaker 4: I flew up here.
- 6:34Speaker 3: I'm coming in here.
- 6:35Speaker 7: She has her own bottle of gin. She's like, I
- 6:37Speaker 7: don't need it.
- 6:37Speaker 6: Yes. I love her.
- 6:39Speaker 1: Did your mom ask for, yes. She's like, I don't
- 6:43Speaker 1: want your alcohol. I want the clean alcohol. That's like
- 6:45Speaker 1: in the back somewhere. My mom's she's gone.
- 6:48Speaker 3: And I'm like, where is she?
- 6:49Speaker 8: She's at the bar talking to like probably some pledges.
- 6:53Speaker 8: And she comes back over with, like a drink with
- 6:56Speaker 8: ice in her drink. And there's like a little umbrella.
- 6:59Speaker 8: And I'm like, mom, where in the world did you like?
- 7:02Speaker 8: She's like, oh, he went downstairs to get me a
- 7:05Speaker 8: drink with some ice.
- 7:07Speaker 3: Well, it can.
- 7:08Speaker 7: She's like, don't bring me anything open.
- 7:11Speaker 4: Oh my gosh.
- 7:13Speaker 1: There's one frat that does mimosas in the morning. So
- 7:15Speaker 1: everyone goes to the mimosas and she goes, I want
- 7:18Speaker 1: one mimosa, but.
- 7:20Speaker 3: Hold the orange juice. That's my mother.
- 7:24Speaker 2: Yes.
- 7:26Speaker 8: Yes.
- 7:28Speaker 2: I love your mother.
- 7:30Speaker 4: I cannot.
- 7:31Speaker 6: I'm not going out after.
- 7:32Speaker 3: This is the main event.
- 7:33Speaker 7: You're not going to see me again.
- 7:34Speaker 3: The parents will check out. They'll be like, I'm done.
- 7:38Speaker 4: My day is done.
- 7:39Speaker 6: You guys made me start at 8 a.m. I'm done.
- 7:43Speaker 3: They're like, I'm getting rid of you now. I'm over you.
- 7:45Speaker 7: I've got to go lay down.
- 7:46Speaker 3: I have other.
- 7:46Speaker 4: Things I need to do.
- 7:48Speaker 5: Okay.
- 7:48Speaker 2: So tell me when she enters the fraternity houses, does
- 7:52Speaker 2: it work? Like she gets up there and she's like.
- 7:54Speaker 6: I'm coming in.
- 7:56Speaker 2: I love her.
- 7:59Speaker 7: And sometimes I'll be like, wait, like, who are you?
- 8:02Speaker 7: She goes, who are you?
- 8:03Speaker 3: I'm going.
- 8:06Speaker 1: Also the frats love nothing more than a hot mom.
- 8:10Speaker 1: Like they, that is what they're going for the entire weekend.
- 8:14Speaker 1: They don't care about the dads. They don't care about
- 8:16Speaker 1: the sorority girls that they see every single weekend. They
- 8:18Speaker 1: want hot moms at the, frat parties.
- 8:20Speaker 3: They've got banners.
- 8:22Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 8:22Speaker 7: They've got banners.
- 8:23Speaker 2: That say what?
- 8:24Speaker 6: Oh my gosh.
- 8:25Speaker 3: I don't even know.
- 8:26Speaker 6: It'll be like hot moms drink for free. Like dad's
- 8:29Speaker 6: giving me.
- 8:30Speaker 2: Oh, okay. That's so funny. Okay. So yes, we're talking
- 8:35Speaker 2: all frat parties, but from the perspective, since you're not
- 8:38Speaker 2: in a sorority, do you feel like there are other
- 8:42Speaker 2: activities that you can do that are not involved in
- 8:46Speaker 2: the Greek system? I mean, I know this is the
- 8:47Speaker 2: dirty rush podcast. but I want to talk truly about
- 8:51Speaker 2: all things Parents Weekend and does it have to include
- 8:55Speaker 2: fraternity parties?
- 8:57Speaker 8: No, my mom loves to hit the student store first
- 9:00Speaker 8: and get her outfit set.
- 9:01Speaker 2: Yes, of course.
- 9:02Speaker 8: And then we have a tailgate at one of our
- 9:06Speaker 8: like little hotel things that graduate and.
- 9:08Speaker 6: We call it Henry's.
- 9:10Speaker 8: She loves to go there and get her signature drink,
- 9:14Speaker 8: which is a golden bear. And then she'll be like,
- 9:17Speaker 8: this is way too strong.
- 9:19Speaker 3: You're insane.
- 9:20Speaker 6: And then she'll give.
- 9:21Speaker 8: It to me and then I'll have to finish it.
- 9:24Speaker 8: And then she's like, why are you so hammered?
- 9:26Speaker 4: I'm like, I don't know.
- 9:27Speaker 7: I've had to finish.
- 9:28Speaker 2: You're like mom because all your drinks are pure vodka.
- 9:31Speaker 6: All your mimosas, no orange juice.
- 9:34Speaker 7: Like I've had to drink after you're done with it.
- 9:37Speaker 1: Right.
- 9:37Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 9:37Speaker 8: So that's like the main event now and has been
- 9:41Speaker 8: usually just because it's easier to maneuver with my mom. Yeah.
- 9:45Speaker 2: Got it.
- 9:46Speaker 7: No, she doesn't get it.
- 9:47Speaker 8: She gets hot and there's lots of things you've taken
- 9:49Speaker 8: attention to.
- 9:50Speaker 2: Oh, believe me. I get it. I am a menopausal woman.
- 9:53Speaker 2: So getting hot and being comfortable are all, you know,
- 10:00Speaker 2: I understand.
- 10:01Speaker 4: Okay.
- 10:02Speaker 2: So have you ever, has she, or have you ever
- 10:05Speaker 2: noticed any other parents who have gotten a little too
- 10:08Speaker 2: drunk for parents weekend?
- 10:09Speaker 7: Yes, we have.
- 10:11Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 10:11Speaker 2: Tell me stories.
- 10:13Speaker 8: My mom, well, we've seen parents like dancing and getting
- 10:19Speaker 8: down and doing on top of bars and standing on
- 10:23Speaker 8: bars and doing kickstands.
- 10:25Speaker 7: And my mother will just be with her. She'll be like,
- 10:28Speaker 7: can you believe that they're doing this right now?
- 10:31Speaker 6: Like, can you imagine if I did that?
- 10:34Speaker 7: I was like, mom, you should do it.
- 10:35Speaker 8: Like, go.
- 10:37Speaker 6: Do the kickstand. Do the kickstand.
- 10:39Speaker 3: Go dance up on the platform.
- 10:40Speaker 6: That's what you're here for.
- 10:42Speaker 2: Go do it.
- 10:43Speaker 6: Do the damn thing.
- 10:45Speaker 7: And she's like, Sarah, I have to.
- 10:50Speaker 1: We had one friend whose mom was so adamant on
- 10:55Speaker 1: going to the bar after the game. And the daughter
- 10:58Speaker 1: was like, mom, like, honestly, like, I don't even really
- 11:00Speaker 1: want to go out. Like, I'm tired all day. And
- 11:02Speaker 1: she's like, no, we have to go out. Like, we
- 11:05Speaker 1: have to go. Like, we have like this like raunchy
- 11:08Speaker 1: dive bar called Kip's. And it's just like a joke
- 11:11Speaker 1: of like a place kind of. But she's like, we
- 11:13Speaker 1: have to go to Kip's tonight.
- 11:14Speaker 4: Like, we're going.
- 11:14Speaker 3: And the daughter was like, no, we're not. Like, write
- 11:18Speaker 3: it in.
- 11:20Speaker 6: Uh, yeah, I love it.
- 11:22Speaker 2: I love that this, the roles, it seems to be reversed.
- 11:26Speaker 2: Like you guys are taking care of your parents now
- 11:28Speaker 2: at parents weekend.
- 11:32Speaker 6: Okay.
- 11:32Speaker 2: Have you ever had an experience of someone of your
- 11:35Speaker 2: parents accidentally finding out something that you might not? you
- 11:39Speaker 2: might not have been sharing with them, like whether it
- 11:42Speaker 2: was somebody you were dating or, Oh, I think Sarah
- 11:45Speaker 2: has something. Yeah.
- 11:48Speaker 1: We had like, it was, it first started by, we
- 11:52Speaker 1: were at, At the tailgate thing, that's where you like
- 11:55Speaker 1: actually see everyone.
- 11:56Speaker 3: Cause not everyone goes to the frats, especially when we're
- 11:58Speaker 3: old and we're seniors. It's like, eh, like you really
- 12:00Speaker 3: still go into the frat parties.
- 12:01Speaker 2: Yeah. Yeah.
- 12:02Speaker 1: So everyone's like, we're going to meet at the tailgate.
- 12:04Speaker 1: So that's where you start seeing everyone and everyone starts
- 12:07Speaker 1: saying hi. Now it's one thing to have just your
- 12:09Speaker 1: mom with you because your mom's like the girl's girl.
- 12:11Speaker 3: She like knows all the ends. She knows all the
- 12:13Speaker 3: boys that you've talked to.
- 12:14Speaker 1: It's another thing I will say in a different ballad,
- 12:17Speaker 1: have your dad there because he's like, who the hell
- 12:20Speaker 1: is this guy talking to my daughter and slurring his
- 12:24Speaker 1: words and.
- 12:24Speaker 2: Dah, dah, dah.
- 12:25Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 12:26Speaker 1: And I had one of my really good guy friends
- 12:29Speaker 1: come over to me and he were trotting it up.
- 12:33Speaker 3: And my dad was like, who's this guy? And I
- 12:35Speaker 3: was like, Oh, like, this is my friend.
- 12:37Speaker 1: Like, He plays for this team at the school.
- 12:39Speaker 3: And he goes, yeah, my, my daughter, she's not allowed
- 12:41Speaker 3: to date you kind of athletes. I know a lot
- 12:43Speaker 3: of those kinds of athletes. She's not allowed to date you.
- 12:44Speaker 3: And I was like, Oh no.
- 12:47Speaker 1: I was like, I'm my mom was like, stay in
- 12:49Speaker 1: your lane, get out of here. And then he turns
- 12:52Speaker 1: to Sarah and was like, does she like him?
- 12:55Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 12:56Speaker 4: What's the deal?
- 12:56Speaker 3: What's the deal? And then I get out of the conversation.
- 12:59Speaker 3: I was like, no, actually she likes him. And my
- 13:02Speaker 3: dad was like, Oh, and then later that.
- 13:05Speaker 8: Night, Later that night, I took my mom out to
- 13:09Speaker 8: the bars because she left us.
- 13:11Speaker 3: She was like, I'm going home. I don't know what
- 13:12Speaker 3: you think. I don't know who you think I am.
- 13:14Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 13:14Speaker 7: She was like, I'll meet you guys out. So she
- 13:16Speaker 7: meets us out and we go to the bar.
- 13:20Speaker 3: And she's everywhere.
- 13:21Speaker 7: I'll turn and she's gone. And she's with me.
- 13:26Speaker 8: And she kind of knows what's going on because we've, like,
- 13:28Speaker 8: been talking for a second.
- 13:30Speaker 7: And I kind of point him out.
- 13:31Speaker 3: I'm like, oh, there he is.
- 13:33Speaker 6: Uh-oh.
- 13:35Speaker 7: She walks.
- 13:36Speaker 2: She beelines right to him.
- 13:37Speaker 6: He beelines for him.
- 13:40Speaker 8: Like he's carrying a football and she's going to make,
- 13:43Speaker 8: I don't even, it was unlike anything I've ever seen.
- 13:46Speaker 7: I don't even know how she got there. I like
- 13:48Speaker 7: slipped in front of him. She's shaking his hand.
- 13:52Speaker 8: I don't even think he knows who she is. He's
- 13:55Speaker 8: this random mother is like, right.
- 13:57Speaker 7: To me and introducing herself. Who are you? So I
- 14:00Speaker 7: was like, Oh my gosh, no, no.
- 14:04Speaker 8: No, no, no, no, no. So I try and make
- 14:08Speaker 8: my way over there. And by the time I get
- 14:10Speaker 8: over there, she's already coming back to me and meeting
- 14:14Speaker 8: me in the middle. And she goes, you know, I'm just.
- 14:18Speaker 7: Going to go home. I'm going to go home right now.
- 14:20Speaker 7: And I was like, Oh, like why you didn't like
- 14:22Speaker 7: talking to him? She was like, no, I'm going to
- 14:24Speaker 7: let you do your thing.
- 14:26Speaker 3: Um, and we'll talk tomorrow.
- 14:28Speaker 2: Okay, so what did you take from that? Do you
- 14:31Speaker 2: think that she was giving you the seal of approval?
- 14:34Speaker 3: She was not a fan, apparently.
- 14:36Speaker 2: Not a fan.
- 14:37Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 14:37Speaker 7: In the 20 seconds, she introduced herself. And then I
- 14:41Speaker 7: made it back to her. I was like, oh, like,
- 14:43Speaker 7: that was my mom.
- 14:43Speaker 4: He goes, oh, I know.
- 14:46Speaker 6: She's like, I'm her mom.
- 14:48Speaker 7: I'm Sarah's mom.
- 14:50Speaker 6: Nice to meet you.
- 14:51Speaker 3: I was like, oh, I'm mortified.
- 14:53Speaker 7: But that's great. Did she like.
- 14:54Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 14:55Speaker 8: He's like, I don't really think she... Liked me, though.
- 14:59Speaker 8: I don't think that went too great. Oh, no.
- 15:02Speaker 2: Is it someone you're still dating? No.
- 15:05Speaker 5: No.
- 15:14Speaker 6: You know, your exes will kind of like wave to
- 15:16Speaker 6: your mom.
- 15:17Speaker 1: Maybe, maybe someone will come up. It's just like, Oh God, like.
- 15:21Speaker 3: You're really putting a face to everyone's name now at
- 15:23Speaker 3: this point.
- 15:24Speaker 2: Yeah, totally. I mean, isn't that part of the parents weekend?
- 15:29Speaker 2: You know, we get to like come and see part
- 15:32Speaker 2: of your life and experience it with you. So I'm
- 15:36Speaker 2: excited for it. I'm so excited that you guys got
- 15:38Speaker 2: to come on the podcast and share your stories. Thanks
- 15:40Speaker 2: so much for being here, you guys. And have fun
- 15:43Speaker 2: at school.
- 15:44Speaker 3: Thanks.
- 15:45Speaker 6: Bye.
- 15:46Speaker 4: Bye, guys.
- 16:02Speaker 2: Next, we're bringing in Avery and Julia. They are also
- 16:05Speaker 2: from UC Berkeley, and they're going to share some really
- 16:07Speaker 2: fun stories about Parents Weekend that they've experienced. Hi, girls.
- 16:12Speaker 2: How are you?
- 16:13Speaker 6: Good.
- 16:15Speaker 4: Marinating our big day.
- 16:16Speaker 6: Oh, you're marinating?
- 16:18Speaker 5: Oh, good.
- 16:19Speaker 2: You're marinating your stories and ready to share all things
- 16:22Speaker 2: Parents Weekend? Yeah.
- 16:25Speaker 6: And our Parents Weekend.
- 16:26Speaker 2: Okay, so you're both at UC Berkeley. What year are
- 16:29Speaker 2: you and what houses are you in?
- 16:33Speaker 6: Best question ever. We are seniors and we are actually
- 16:37Speaker 6: in two different houses. She's in Delta Gamma. I'm in Kappa.
- 16:40Speaker 6: And we live in a 14-person senior house with DG
- 16:43Speaker 6: and Kappa.
- 16:44Speaker 2: Oh, that is so fun.
- 16:46Speaker 4: I love that.
- 16:48Speaker 2: Did you guys know each other freshman year? Oh, gosh.
- 16:52Speaker 6: Or from home?
- 16:53Speaker 2: Tell me.
- 16:54Speaker 6: She's just a laugher. No, we knew each other.
- 16:57Speaker 4: We were friends.
- 16:57Speaker 6: And then we.
- 17:00Speaker 9: Like are in the same like extended friend group. And
- 17:03Speaker 9: then we went abroad and we were both in Florence together.
- 17:05Speaker 9: So that's when we really became friends. We were actually,
- 17:09Speaker 9: we were signed to be in this house before we
- 17:10Speaker 9: were really friends.
- 17:11Speaker 7: I know.
- 17:12Speaker 6: We were going to live with each other no matter what,
- 17:13Speaker 6: but we clicked abroad. And thank God. Me and her.
- 17:18Speaker 4: Love it.
- 17:19Speaker 2: Love it.
- 17:20Speaker 3: I love it.
- 17:21Speaker 2: Match made in heaven.
- 17:23Speaker 6: Okay.
- 17:24Speaker 2: So tell me about Parents Weekend, just like a big
- 17:28Speaker 2: picture elevator, elevator speech about your Parents Weekend experiences, what
- 17:35Speaker 2: you love and what you don't.
- 17:36Speaker 9: Okay. Well, so I think I'm in a little bit
- 17:40Speaker 9: of a unique state. Well, I'll give the summary kind
- 17:42Speaker 9: of of Parents Weekend, at least what it feels like
- 17:44Speaker 9: at Cal. Typically what you'll do is like your parents
- 17:47Speaker 9: will come on like Friday and then our game days
- 17:49Speaker 9: are on Saturday. So like you can kind of do something.
- 17:51Speaker 9: You'll take your parents to like the frat parties or
- 17:53Speaker 9: you'll take them to the bars and like they'll go
- 17:56Speaker 9: kind of crazy. Buy like rounds of drinks from your friends,
- 17:58Speaker 9: which is always really fun. Or like we had a
- 18:00Speaker 9: cute little like dinner at our house, which was really nice.
- 18:03Speaker 4: And then go to the game day.
- 18:04Speaker 9: So for us this year, at least our game day
- 18:06Speaker 9: was like the game itself was at 1230. So we
- 18:08Speaker 9: started drinking at like 9 a.m. which I don't think
- 18:11Speaker 9: was super compatible with every single parent. It was a lot.
- 18:14Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 18:15Speaker 6: Yeah. My dad was ripping tequila shots at 9am. I'm like, mother,
- 18:20Speaker 6: this is a lot. Slow down.
- 18:24Speaker 9: It's, it's major, but it's, it's funny. Cause you also
- 18:27Speaker 9: get to see, especially I've noticed in our senior house now,
- 18:30Speaker 9: like the types of parents that, like Avery are like
- 18:34Speaker 9: ripping shots, going really crazy, having so much fun.
- 18:38Speaker 4: And my parents who I love are a little bit
- 18:39Speaker 4: more reserved.
- 18:40Speaker 9: And so that's kind of something that I've like noticed
- 18:42Speaker 9: throughout these four years is like, my parents are great.
- 18:45Speaker 9: And they're really awesome at like socializing with other parents
- 18:47Speaker 9: or their kids, but like, they're not doing dunkaroos at Z.
- 18:51Speaker 2: What the heck is a dunkaroo?
- 18:53Speaker 6: A dunkaroo.
- 18:58Speaker 9: My parents learned this when they came freshman year because
- 19:00Speaker 9: they saw my friend's dad's doing it. But basically, it's
- 19:03Speaker 9: like a fraternity will have a trash can. like filled
- 19:07Speaker 9: to the it's clean but like filled to the brim.
- 19:08Speaker 4: Oh i was gonna say okay all right clean.
- 19:11Speaker 6: Like just a bin just like a big but all
- 19:13Speaker 6: clean like it's not that clean it's fraternity house clean
- 19:18Speaker 6: yeah you gotta you gotta take what you got but.
- 19:21Speaker 9: It's filled like totally with water and then there's a
- 19:23Speaker 9: bunch of like coarse lights in the can and so
- 19:26Speaker 9: you have to like they put you in a handstand
- 19:29Speaker 9: and you have your hands on the lid and you're diving,
- 19:31Speaker 9: like bobbing for apples.
- 19:32Speaker 4: Yes.
- 19:35Speaker 6: And you're like in a headstand.
- 19:36Speaker 4: Oh my gosh.
- 19:37Speaker 9: And so you come up and someone like has a
- 19:40Speaker 9: beer ready for you already, like in the shotgun, like
- 19:43Speaker 9: regulatory way. And they hand you the beer and then
- 19:47Speaker 9: the person in front of you slaps you in the
- 19:49Speaker 9: face and.
- 19:49Speaker 4: Then you have to shotgun.
- 19:51Speaker 9: Yeah drenched from the water get handed a beer get
- 19:56Speaker 9: slapped you're like oh my god okay And so it
- 19:58Speaker 9: wakes you up.
- 19:59Speaker 6: Honestly, it does.
- 20:00Speaker 2: I mean, there you go with a slap in the face. Um, gosh,
- 20:05Speaker 2: I like, so my son is, is a freshman at
- 20:08Speaker 2: CU Boulder and my daughter is a senior in high school.
- 20:12Speaker 2: And we are going to parents weekend this weekend, not
- 20:15Speaker 2: like we're an hour away, maybe 45 minutes. So we're
- 20:18Speaker 2: just going to drive up for the football game, but
- 20:20Speaker 2: my husband doesn't drink. So I'm like, like, and, and Max,
- 20:25Speaker 2: our son isn't in a fraternity. So I feel like
- 20:29Speaker 2: a lot of this stuff is revolved around fraternity parties.
- 20:33Speaker 2: Is there anything that like the sorority houses do or like,
- 20:38Speaker 2: girls that you're friends with that aren't in houses. Obviously
- 20:42Speaker 2: if there's, if it's a football school, most people are
- 20:44Speaker 2: going to a football game, tailgating, all that kind of stuff.
- 20:48Speaker 2: But what are you finding that people are doing that
- 20:50Speaker 2: might not just be partying, which I still want to
- 20:53Speaker 2: hear those stories, but I love just selfishly to hear
- 20:57Speaker 2: kind of like that experience for people who aren't in
- 21:00Speaker 2: a fraternity or sorority.
- 21:02Speaker 4: Totally.
- 21:03Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 21:03Speaker 6: I feel like, well, what I know is like the
- 21:06Speaker 6: people that are in Greek life and we do other
- 21:08Speaker 6: things that aren't just partying. Like for instance, like there's
- 21:12Speaker 6: this day for the sororities, maybe on the Sunday after
- 21:15Speaker 6: the game where they do like presents where the big
- 21:18Speaker 6: will present the new little that just.
- 21:20Speaker 2: Got into the sorority.
- 21:23Speaker 6: And we'll present them in front of the families. And
- 21:25Speaker 6: then they say like a little speech about why, The
- 21:28Speaker 6: little special and why that they picked them and how
- 21:31Speaker 6: they're going to create this great friendship. And I remember
- 21:34Speaker 6: that being really special. And then other things are just
- 21:38Speaker 6: like a lot of families just go to dinner and
- 21:40Speaker 6: a lot of families just like spend quality time and
- 21:42Speaker 6: are walking through the campus. And like, I know when
- 21:45Speaker 6: my parents get here. They want to go through the
- 21:47Speaker 6: campus again. They've been through it many times, but they're like, let's.
- 21:49Speaker 4: Go do it.
- 21:50Speaker 6: They want to go to the bookstore. They want to
- 21:52Speaker 6: buy merch.
- 21:53Speaker 4: They want to do the whole thing.
- 21:55Speaker 6: So honestly, it doesn't even matter if you're in a
- 21:57Speaker 6: Greek house, like you go in the campus, go explore,
- 22:00Speaker 6: go get merch. I feel like that's what Parents Weekend's about.
- 22:03Speaker 6: Just like yourself and your son or daughter's college experience.
- 22:08Speaker 1: Totally.
- 22:09Speaker 2: Okay. Is it something that you guys personally look forward
- 22:13Speaker 2: to Parents Weekend? Or do you feel like the last
- 22:15Speaker 2: people I talked to- they were saying that it is
- 22:18Speaker 2: like one of the moms requires like an itinerary and
- 22:21Speaker 2: it's kind of stressful leading up to it. You know,
- 22:24Speaker 2: are you guys looking forward to it whenever it happens
- 22:27Speaker 2: or does it come along with some stress?
- 22:31Speaker 6: Wait, I look forward to it because I'm from LA
- 22:35Speaker 6: and so my parents aren't in NorCal, so I love
- 22:38Speaker 6: seeing them. I also have three brothers, two of which
- 22:42Speaker 6: are Um, one of them is then he graduated college.
- 22:45Speaker 6: He went to Oregon. He was a frat guy.
- 22:47Speaker 4: He loves coming.
- 22:48Speaker 6: He loves doing the whole shebang. And then I have
- 22:50Speaker 6: a little brother who's genuinely 15 sophomore in high school.
- 22:55Speaker 6: He is the cutest thing ever. And he's like, He's
- 22:58Speaker 6: like experimenting a little bit. And I was like, try
- 23:01Speaker 6: the beer. And I'm just like, this is amazing.
- 23:04Speaker 4: Yeah, that's so fun.
- 23:05Speaker 6: So I personally look forward to it.
- 23:07Speaker 4: Okay.
- 23:07Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 23:08Speaker 9: I think sometimes I'm a little bit mixed. Like I
- 23:10Speaker 9: was saying before, my parents maybe aren't the same as
- 23:12Speaker 9: Avery's parents. And I think at least when I felt
- 23:15Speaker 9: that this weekend, I was kind of like, oh, I
- 23:17Speaker 9: wish like my dad doesn't really drink.
- 23:18Speaker 4: Neither does my mom really.
- 23:19Speaker 9: So I was kind of like, oh, it would be
- 23:20Speaker 9: nice to like have a little glass of wine with
- 23:22Speaker 9: my mom and like be.
- 23:23Speaker 4: Able to like keep going. We kiki all the same.
- 23:26Speaker 9: It doesn't need to be like this party environment. But
- 23:28Speaker 9: it was kind of funny at the same time, like
- 23:31Speaker 9: what I really want to see my parents doing a
- 23:33Speaker 9: dunkaroo at a frat, like maybe not as still, I
- 23:36Speaker 9: can also be super embarrassed. Like grass is always kind
- 23:38Speaker 9: of greener on the other side.
- 23:40Speaker 4: What was really fun. I still look forward to it now.
- 23:43Speaker 4: I love my parents.
- 23:44Speaker 9: I also like am from around here. And so I
- 23:46Speaker 9: see them really often anyways. But my older brother went here.
- 23:51Speaker 9: He graduated two years ago, but I really loved when
- 23:54Speaker 9: I was a freshman and sophomore and he was a
- 23:55Speaker 9: junior and a senior getting to like do all the
- 23:57Speaker 9: family stuff, all of us together. That was always like
- 24:00Speaker 9: super cute. And if my parents were kind of like
- 24:03Speaker 9: wiped out from like going out, I would just stay
- 24:05Speaker 9: with my brother. And that was always really fun. It's
- 24:07Speaker 9: like more sad now that it's just me. but it was,
- 24:10Speaker 9: she was lucky.
- 24:12Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 24:13Speaker 2: I haven't thought about that because, um, we're bringing my
- 24:16Speaker 2: daughter who's a senior in high school to the football game.
- 24:20Speaker 2: And it is interesting. Like, I haven't thought about her
- 24:23Speaker 2: actually staying and us coming home. Like maybe she would
- 24:27Speaker 2: want to do that. Cause how fun would that be?
- 24:31Speaker 9: I got to visit my older brother when I was
- 24:33Speaker 9: a senior in high school too. And like, my brother
- 24:35Speaker 9: and I don't get along all the time, but like
- 24:36Speaker 9: to have a protective person and like, I'm sure that
- 24:40Speaker 9: your son is always going to be looking out for
- 24:42Speaker 9: your daughter. Like it's, it was so fun to have.
- 24:44Speaker 9: And also just to visit him before I even came
- 24:46Speaker 9: to Cal. Like I, yeah the best times yeah that's awesome.
- 24:50Speaker 2: Okay we've talked about um parents can be embarrassing a
- 24:53Speaker 2: little bit have do either of you have stories of
- 24:56Speaker 2: embarrassing parent moments oh my.
- 24:59Speaker 6: Gosh we i definitely do okay wonderful okay i know
- 25:03Speaker 6: i know i was like trying to think about i
- 25:06Speaker 6: have one um okay so i know what you're gonna
- 25:10Speaker 6: say okay so Okay, the best part about Parents Weekend,
- 25:14Speaker 6: or not the best part, the weirdest part about Parents
- 25:17Speaker 6: Weekend is when you have gotten with someone and they
- 25:21Speaker 6: are at the same party as you and your parents
- 25:25Speaker 6: and you have a really weird interaction where it's like
- 25:28Speaker 6: they come over, they say hi, and my mom goes,
- 25:31Speaker 6: oh my gosh, how do you guys know each other? Um, well, mother,
- 25:36Speaker 6: I don't think you should know. And then the guy
- 25:40Speaker 6: acts all awkward. He's like, oh, we've met in class.
- 25:42Speaker 6: I'm like, honey, we did not meet in class.
- 25:43Speaker 4: Like, let's be honest.
- 25:45Speaker 6: Yeah, right. So that has happened to me.
- 25:46Speaker 8: Yes.
- 25:47Speaker 2: Okay.
- 25:47Speaker 4: Yeah, a little awkward. I feel like I also.
- 25:53Speaker 9: I wonder, does your mom even know? Like, she probably
- 25:54Speaker 9: totally is like, oh, that was like a strange interaction.
- 25:58Speaker 2: Oh, she knows.
- 25:58Speaker 6: Because I tell my mom a lot more than she
- 26:01Speaker 6: should ever know. And after, I literally, she was like,
- 26:05Speaker 6: I saw the sexual tension. I'm like, okay, mother, I
- 26:07Speaker 6: did not. She's like, I know something. And I'm like, oh,
- 26:12Speaker 6: hell no. And then I tell her everything. And then
- 26:14Speaker 6: she's like, oh, it was cute. I'm like, yeah, I
- 26:16Speaker 6: know he was cute.
- 26:21Speaker 4: That's why it happened.
- 26:22Speaker 6: I'm like, that's why it happened.
- 26:24Speaker 4: Thank you.
- 26:25Speaker 6: That's my embarrassing story is just the fact that you're
- 26:28Speaker 6: in your college campus. You're around the people that you
- 26:30Speaker 6: might have gotten with in the past. And then now
- 26:33Speaker 6: your parents are in that area. So it gets weird.
- 26:37Speaker 4: It gets weird. Yeah.
- 26:39Speaker 2: I feel like it's funny because I was just in LA. Actually,
- 26:42Speaker 2: I just flew back. But I was, I did a
- 26:46Speaker 2: little story about how I clean up like my hotel
- 26:50Speaker 2: room when I leave the hotel room. I don't know why.
- 26:53Speaker 2: It's like, I know there's going to be a housekeeping coming,
- 26:56Speaker 2: but I just kind of tidy it up. I don't
- 26:58Speaker 2: clean it, but I tidy it up. Do you feel
- 27:01Speaker 2: like before your parents come, you need to like, tidy
- 27:04Speaker 2: up and, and shove the cobwebs or the diary notes
- 27:08Speaker 2: about the guy that you just hooked up with under
- 27:10Speaker 2: the bed or what?
- 27:12Speaker 9: Well, I think even now living in a 14 person home,
- 27:15Speaker 9: whether or not the paraphernalia belongs to me, like it really,
- 27:21Speaker 9: we did a deep cleaning, but I think it's also like, we,
- 27:24Speaker 9: we are all 21 now. And I think there's like
- 27:26Speaker 9: a more level of maturity that like, when my parents
- 27:29Speaker 9: came up, they had like four bottles of Prosecco.
- 27:31Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 27:32Speaker 9: Really like, mind as much anymore but definitely whether it's
- 27:36Speaker 9: like actual physical things to hide or just like internal
- 27:39Speaker 9: like yeah.
- 27:40Speaker 6: No and also the night before they came her sorority
- 27:43Speaker 6: had a formal and we had a hundred person pregame
- 27:47Speaker 6: at our house so that was the night before so
- 27:51Speaker 6: like we all had to clean up in the morning
- 27:52Speaker 6: deep clean just for like So our parents didn't think
- 27:55Speaker 6: that we were slops.
- 27:56Speaker 9: That was actually really, that next morning, because I live
- 28:00Speaker 9: close by my, and my mom is like such a
- 28:01Speaker 9: type A person. She like called me at 10 AM
- 28:03Speaker 9: and was like, Hey, I need to set up the tablecloths.
- 28:05Speaker 9: Like I'm coming to Berkeley right now.
- 28:06Speaker 4: I was like, Oh my God. And like, you're like, no, no, no, no,
- 28:11Speaker 4: you're not.
- 28:11Speaker 6: You're not going.
- 28:12Speaker 4: Yeah. I wasn't home at 10 a.m. when she called.
- 28:17Speaker 6: She was busy.
- 28:17Speaker 3: Oh, no, so she showed up?
- 28:19Speaker 4: I got home before she showed up. But then she's like,
- 28:22Speaker 4: will you come with me?
- 28:23Speaker 9: And I'm like so hungover. I like don't have my
- 28:26Speaker 9: contacts in, so I can't see. And I'm at Safeway
- 28:28Speaker 9: trying to buy Prosecco with my mom. And I like
- 28:31Speaker 9: see one of my distant friends and parents. And she
- 28:35Speaker 9: was like, oh, hi, how are you? And I was like, oh,
- 28:39Speaker 9: I'm good to see you. I'm really hungover.
- 28:41Speaker 6: And I, like, said this to.
- 28:43Speaker 4: Parents that I didn't know. And they were like, oh, okay.
- 28:46Speaker 4: And I just kept walking. I don't know. It was
- 28:49Speaker 4: really funny.
- 28:52Speaker 9: My mom could tell I was extremely hungover, but she
- 28:54Speaker 9: was kind enough to just not really ask any questions.
- 28:56Speaker 6: I put a Gatorade in before.
- 28:59Speaker 2: And I feel like you're also seniors and you're 21. So,
- 29:02Speaker 2: you know, like as parents, I feel like when my
- 29:04Speaker 2: kids get to be that age, like they're just living
- 29:08Speaker 2: their lives and they're doing it legally. So whatever, you know,
- 29:11Speaker 2: as long as you're being safe and you're being kind
- 29:14Speaker 2: humans and good humans, like I feel like that's the
- 29:17Speaker 2: general like feeling of parents is you want to be
- 29:20Speaker 2: supportive of your kids and like not isolate them. So
- 29:24Speaker 2: I'm sure you being hung over is, was not a shock.
- 29:27Speaker 8: Yeah.
