Speaker 1: And I remember being like, that is the most fed
• 0:02
Speaker 1: up thing that I've ever heard in my life, where
• 0:05
  Speaker 1: it's like, we're looking for a Donald Faison type. I'll
• 0:08
Speaker 1: go in on the audition and they're like, well, we're
• 0:11
Speaker 1: looking for Donald Faison type, but a better version of.
• 0:13
Speaker 2: Donald donaldson ish but not full right.
• 0:17
Speaker 1: Don't go full phaseon.
• 0:19
Speaker 2: You went full phase on, you Donaldson went too far
• 0:22
Speaker 2: in the Phason direction.
• 0:24
Speaker 3: Here's some stories that show we made about a bunch
• 0:29
Speaker 3: of docs and nurses. Sah I said, here's a story next.
• 0:38
Speaker 2: So YadA, YadA, Welcome back, everybody.
• 0:49
Speaker 1: Welcome back to the Rewatch Show with back.
• 0:54
Speaker 2: One two and now, Donald, you pointed out something very wise,
• 0:57
Speaker 2: and that is that you know, when you do a pilot,
• 1:00
Speaker 2: you shoot the pilot and then you have no idea
• 1:03
Speaker 2: if the show's gonna get picked up. And there's often
• 1:06
Speaker 2: a lot of time between when you shot the pilot
• 1:08
Speaker 2: and then let's say the network says, okay, we're gonna
• 1:11
Speaker 2: make it a series, and then you go and you
• 1:14
Speaker 2: you go to a thing called the upfronts, which is
• 1:16
Speaker 2: when your show is selected. You go to a huge
• 1:18
Speaker 2: party in New York City where they announce where the
• 1:21
Speaker 2: network is going to announce all of the new shows,
• 1:25
Speaker 2: and this is a very thrilling thing for a young actor.
• 1:28
Speaker 1: Absolutely, And also when Scrubs got picked up, it was
• 1:33
Speaker 1: considered one of the better pilots of that time. And
• 1:37
Speaker 1: so when we went to upfronts, I remember all of
• 1:39
Speaker 1: the heat that we had behind us at upfronts, Like
• 1:42
Speaker 1: even the party for all of the upfront shows was
• 1:46
Speaker 1: kind of themed towards us, you know what I mean.
• 1:50
Speaker 1: And you know, you get there, you and you and
• 1:53
Speaker 1: you meet a bunch of executives for the first time,
• 1:56
Speaker 1: and you don't really know who they are, because nobody
• 1:59
Speaker 1: really knows executs gives until you're on the network and
• 2:02
Speaker 1: somebody tells you, Okay, that's my boss and that's his boss, and.
• 2:07
Speaker 2: Well, that reminds me of a wonderful story about you,
• 2:10
Speaker 2: because we were we were so first we go to
• 2:12
Speaker 2: the party and it's this amazing party and it's you know,
• 2:14
Speaker 2: we were just wide on. We couldn't believe we were here.
• 2:17
Speaker 2: I mean, I was waiting tables a few months ago
• 2:19
Speaker 2: and and uh, here we are in New York at
• 2:22
Speaker 2: this giant party and you have to you take pictures
• 2:25
Speaker 2: with a lot of people and you know, you're getting
• 2:26
Speaker 2: treated like a celebrity and you're not. No one even
• 2:29
Speaker 2: knows who you are really yet, at least especially in
• 2:31
Speaker 2: my case. And and then then we go to this
• 2:34
Speaker 2: party and there were celebrities at the party. I remember
• 2:37
Speaker 2: Kevin Nelan, who I was a huge fan of from
• 2:40
Speaker 2: SNL as an example. He was I think literally might
• 2:43
Speaker 2: have been one of the first celebrities I ever met,
• 2:45
Speaker 2: was Kevin Neelan at this party. And I remember thinking, like,
• 2:48
Speaker 2: oh my god, we're hanging out with with celebrities, like
• 2:50
  Speaker 2: we've made it.
• 2:52
Speaker 1: Yeah, you know. Sean Hayes was another person who was
• 2:55
Speaker 1: a big champion, like he loved the show, and it
• 2:58
Speaker 1: was really awesome to have the dude from Will and Grace,
• 3:01
Speaker 1: who at this point was really famous on television.
• 3:05
Speaker 2: That show is huge. And do you remember any other
• 3:07
Speaker 2: stars that were at that party. I remember. I just
• 3:08
Speaker 2: remember because I was such an SNL fan as a kid,
• 3:11
Speaker 2: that I was so geeked out that that Kevin Neilan
• 3:13
Speaker 2: was there. I think there may have been some other
• 3:14
Speaker 2: older SNL faces, but.
• 3:17
Speaker 1: It was it was all the a. It was like
• 3:19
Speaker 1: a NBC rich at like any anyone who was on
• 3:23
Speaker 1: NBC at that time was at at the party.
• 3:27
Speaker 2: Now we proceeded, understandably to get quite intoxicated at this party.
• 3:32
Speaker 2: I remember Bill Lauren saying, like, all right, guys, just
• 3:34
Speaker 2: so you know, like don't like, you know, there's been
• 3:36
Speaker 2: a lot of executives at this party, Like I understand
• 3:38
Speaker 2: in New York your livee has just changed. But like,
• 3:40
Speaker 2: don't get ship faced too.
• 3:43
Speaker 1: All of us, all of us, all of us shitty.
• 3:48
Speaker 1: Sarah Schalk's famous line, you guys ever heard of a Cosmopolitan?
• 3:52
Speaker 2: Yeah, all right, Sarah. Sarah stumbled up to us sideways
• 3:56
Speaker 2: and she's like, have you guys ever heard of a Cosmopolitan?
• 4:00
Speaker 2: They're great? And then I remember Cutie for some reason
• 4:04
Speaker 2: at this bar, wasn't there like a trapeze, like a trapeze,
• 4:08
Speaker 2: but what do you call that thing where you swing
• 4:10
  Speaker 2: on a trapeze?
• 4:12
Speaker 1: You swing on a traff.
• 4:13
Speaker 2: Feels way too dangerous, stupid, a real trapeze, But was there?
• 4:15
Speaker 1: So it was something like that. It was a bar
• 4:17
Speaker 1: in the middle, It was like a bar. I think
• 4:19
Speaker 1: he was in the middle of the bar.
• 4:21
Speaker 2: It was in the meat paggedstry I think it was
• 4:22
Speaker 2: called park or something anyway, and she was.
• 4:25
Speaker 1: On I remember her being on the bar and flipping
• 4:27
Speaker 1: over and just showing everybody, you know, what she had
• 4:31
Speaker 1: on underneath that dress she wore that day because she
• 4:36
Speaker 1: was And I remember her husband at the time being like,
• 4:38
  Speaker 1: that's it, we're going home.
• 4:39
Speaker 2: Time to go home, let's go. My favorite part of
• 4:41
Speaker 2: the night is Donald was giving everyone noggies, and well,
• 4:46
Speaker 2: all right, let's let's let me tell the story and
• 4:48
Speaker 2: then you can clarify. Let me tell this.
• 4:49
Speaker 1: Let's start from the beginning, though, Let's.
• 4:51
Speaker 2: Start from the very beginning.
• 4:53
Speaker 1: Okay, So Scott Sassa was the dude that I thought
• 4:57
Speaker 1: was in charge of all of NBC at the time.
• 5:00
Speaker 2: I think he was higher up than Jeff Zucker, who
• 5:03
Speaker 2: we're going to talk about. Jeff Zucker was the I believe,
• 5:07
Speaker 2: the president of NBC who's now actually now the president
• 5:10
Speaker 2: of CNN, But at the time, he was a president
• 5:13
  Speaker 2: of NBC.
• 5:14
Speaker 1: He had just come from whatever, the Today Show at
• 5:17
Speaker 1: the time, and then he'd gone on to be the
• 5:21
Speaker 1: head of NBC. And I didn't know this.
• 5:23
Speaker 2: So Donald didn't know who he was. You're gonna ruin
• 5:25
Speaker 2: my story. Donald didn't know who he was.
• 5:27
Speaker 1: I thought he was Scott Sassin's assistant.
• 5:29
Speaker 2: And Donald was going around giving everyone niggies, and I
• 5:32
Speaker 2: look over and Donald has Jeff Zucker, the president of
• 5:35
Speaker 2: the network, in a full headlock, and he's giving him
• 5:39
Speaker 2: a drunken nuggie on his bald head. And I hear
• 5:43
Speaker 2: Jeff Zucker, go, please Donald.
• 5:46
  Speaker 1: No, that's.
• 5:52
Speaker 2: Okay for our entire friendship. Whenever Donald like tells me
• 5:55
Speaker 2: a cringey story that makes me want to run away,
• 5:58
Speaker 2: I just tell him about please Donald, Jeff Zucker.
• 6:01
Speaker 1: You know, at this point, I'm giving everybody love because
• 6:03
Speaker 1: I'm so excited that we're on the network. It's going down,
• 6:07
Speaker 1: and I look over and I see Jeff Zucker in
• 6:10
Speaker 1: my mind, Scott Sass's assistant standing over by the bar,
• 6:15
Speaker 1: you know, by himself, or he might even have been
• 6:18
Speaker 1: with somebody. And I'm like, hey, you come over here
• 6:21
Speaker 1: iggies to give out, and he's like he's like no, no, no, no, no, no,
• 6:24
Speaker 1: no no no. And I point at him again and
• 6:26
Speaker 1: I'm like, and I get a little bit more you know,
• 6:28
Speaker 1: agro about it, and I'm like, no, you get over
• 6:31
Speaker 1: here right now, and he's like no, no, no, no,
• 6:34
Speaker 1: no no, And so I march over to him, drunk
• 6:37
  Speaker 1: as can be.
• 6:38
Speaker 2: I've seen you March when Donald marches his arms wing.
• 6:43
Speaker 1: And I walk up to him and I grab him
• 6:44
Speaker 1: and I put him in the headlock, and I'm like,
• 6:46
Speaker 1: don't you ever tell me no? And I'm grabbing him
• 6:49
Speaker 1: and I'm giving Jeff Zucker and nuggie. And I remember
• 6:53
Speaker 1: Bill Lawrence like a few days later being like, dude, Donald,
• 6:58
Speaker 1: I just have to ask you if this actually happened,
• 7:01
Speaker 1: But did you give Jeff Zucker a nuggie? I was like,
• 7:04
Speaker 1: I gave so many people nuggies.
• 7:06
Speaker 2: I gave so many nigogies. I can't recall who was
• 7:08
  Speaker 2: the RECEI.
• 7:10
Speaker 1: And he was like, well, apparently you gave the head
• 7:13
Speaker 1: of NBC a noogie and he's not really happy about it.
• 7:19
Speaker 2: He wasn't genuinely pissed off, was he.
• 7:22
Speaker 1: No, I don't think he was genuinely pissed off. But
• 7:23
Speaker 1: he stayed away from me. Yeah, I remember a really
• 7:25
  Speaker 1: long time.
• 7:26
Speaker 2: I remember he did come to visit the set at
• 7:28
Speaker 2: the hospital, and he kind of stayed away from you
• 7:30
Speaker 2: because he was afraid.
• 7:32
Speaker 1: He was very very afraid of me.
• 7:34
Speaker 2: Yeah, that's very funny. Well what else do you?
• 7:37
  Speaker 1: So?
• 7:38
Speaker 2: Then I remember that night ended where we were in.
• 7:40
Speaker 1: I wasn't there. You were this was you and Nielan,
• 7:43
  Speaker 1: I wasn't there.
• 7:44
Speaker 2: Oh really, almost everybody ended up back in Bill and
• 7:48
Speaker 2: Christa's hotel room and we it's kind of it's sweet
• 7:52
Speaker 2: slash embarrassing. We were so geeked out. We were like,
• 7:54
Speaker 2: let's watch our pilot. So we were like, it was
• 7:57
Speaker 2: like a whole bunch of people and Kevin Neelan, who
• 7:59
Speaker 2: I was a fan of, and we just were watching
• 8:02
  Speaker 2: the show and I don't know, it's a sweet moment.
• 8:04
Speaker 2: I remember being like just thinking like I can't believe
• 8:07
Speaker 2: this is happening. But then the funny thing is you
• 8:10
Speaker 2: have a long time before you start shooting. So we
• 8:12
Speaker 2: made the show, it got picked up. My mom freaked
• 8:14
Speaker 2: out that I was like that I quit my waiting
• 8:16
Speaker 2: tables job. She was like, but what it's so long,
• 8:19
Speaker 2: what are you gonna do? And I was like, I, Mom,
• 8:21
Speaker 2: I I can live off this pilot money for a
• 8:24
Speaker 2: long I was living so frugally with no money that
• 8:27
Speaker 2: I was like, I can live off this pilot money
• 8:28
Speaker 2: for a long time, So I'm gonna write. And that's
• 8:31
Speaker 2: in that time is when I really finally sat down
• 8:33
Speaker 2: and put Garden State together, and at my dining room table,
• 8:37
Speaker 2: it kind of looked was like, this is a sign
• 8:39
Speaker 2: I need to I have this time that the universe
• 8:42
Speaker 2: gave me and I don't need to wait tables, and
• 8:44
Speaker 2: I'm gonna sit down and like put this script together.
• 8:46
  Speaker 1: That's awesome. Yeah, I went away. I think I did
• 8:48
  Speaker 1: a movie that year. I know I did. I did
• 8:51
Speaker 1: something in between. But I remember also calling Danny Rose,
• 8:55
Speaker 1: who was Bill's assistant at the time, every day like,
• 8:57
Speaker 1: so when do we start, man, Like, you know, he
• 9:00
Speaker 1: was like, and we're going to start, probably around June
• 9:03
Speaker 1: or July. I was like, dude, come on, like like
• 9:05
  Speaker 1: it was.
• 9:06
Speaker 2: Up to Danny. I love it. You're like, come on, man,
• 9:07
  Speaker 2: we gotta start.
• 9:08
Speaker 1: We gotta we gotta start soon.
• 9:09
  Speaker 2: Man.
• 9:09
Speaker 1: I had a baby mama at the time, and we
• 9:13
Speaker 1: had two kids and one on the way, and it
• 9:16
Speaker 1: was like, I remember being like, I got to get
• 9:18
Speaker 1: out of here, man, I got to do something.
• 9:20
Speaker 2: Yeah, Well, you wanted to be working, you wanted to
• 9:22
Speaker 2: be like doing it?
• 9:23
Speaker 1: Well yeah, And also we had this show that was
• 9:26
Speaker 1: picked up, but we weren't going to work from you know,
• 9:29
Speaker 1: from May until July or you know, is.
• 9:32
Speaker 2: That what it was? How many I remember? I couldn't
• 9:34
Speaker 2: figure out. Was it like four months where we waited
• 9:36
  Speaker 2: and waited.
• 9:36
Speaker 1: We went back to work, probably in the beginning of July,
• 9:40
Speaker 1: like most shows do something like that.
• 9:43
Speaker 2: I just remember being at like four months or something.
• 9:45
Speaker 2: But anyway, it was so exciting to finally start. And
• 9:48
Speaker 2: so this episode that we're going to talk about today
• 9:50
Speaker 2: one or two by the way, just this just a
• 9:52
Speaker 2: little bit of oddness. They label TV shows in the
• 9:55
Speaker 2: hundreds so you can keep track of what's season on.
• 9:57
Speaker 2: So a pilot would be one oh one, right, and
• 10:01
Speaker 2: then episode twould be one O two, and then when
• 10:03
Speaker 2: you start season two it's two oh one two oh two.
• 10:06
Speaker 2: Is that way? You know? Anyway, just a little bit
• 10:08
Speaker 2: of trivia for you. So this is one O two
• 10:10
Speaker 2: we're gonna be talking about, and it's called my mentor.
• 10:14
Speaker 1: Okay, so the show starts off, and I remember singing
• 10:17
Speaker 1: this song for such a long time.
• 10:20
Speaker 2: Yeah, but uh it was Rola. It's called good Time
• 10:24
Speaker 2: by Leroy. If you guys want to remind yourselves of
• 10:28
Speaker 2: the song, and it was I really got it. You
• 10:31
Speaker 2: can sing it ahead. I'm sure Lerola.
• 10:36
Speaker 1: I got shot down in southern California. I remember being like,
• 10:44
Speaker 1: that's a dope song, and that is this is you know.
• 10:47
Speaker 1: For me, Scrubs was a brand new experience when it
• 10:50
Speaker 1: came to music, because I didn't listen to music like this.
• 10:53
Speaker 1: I listened to other types of music, and so this
• 10:55
Speaker 1: was one of the first examples of me being of
• 10:58
Speaker 1: me hearing this and being like wow, we and also
• 11:00
Speaker 1: also seeing it for the first time too, and it
• 11:03
Speaker 1: being like a music video. It was like, wow, we're
• 11:05
Speaker 1: making music videos and also making a story about how
• 11:10
Speaker 1: look in the beginning of the show, the hospital's in
• 11:12
Speaker 1: sync because of this song that you're listening to in
• 11:15
Speaker 1: your ear. We're on point, everybody is doing their job.
• 11:19
Speaker 1: And I also noticed that we cut ahead a little
• 11:22
Speaker 1: bit also, so you're no longer it's not the very
• 11:24
  Speaker 1: next day.
• 11:25
  Speaker 2: You're now it's a few days in and I've gotten.
• 11:27
Speaker 2: But I just want to say, like I got. I
• 11:29
Speaker 2: was watching this, and granted I haven't watched this in
• 11:30
Speaker 2: twenty years. Most of these episodes I don't know about you,
• 11:33
Speaker 2: but one of the things that's fun about doing this
• 11:34
Speaker 2: podcast is with very few exceptions, maybe the musical episode
• 11:39
Speaker 2: or or or ones I directed, I directed seven or
• 11:41
Speaker 2: eight of them. I think I never I only saw
• 11:43
Speaker 2: them once, so I haven't seen this in twenty years,
• 11:46
Speaker 2: and it's so cool to look back. And Adam Bernstein
• 11:49
Speaker 2: directed this episode. That was the same director who directed
• 11:51
Speaker 2: our pilot, and I just remember thinking, like you just
• 11:54
Speaker 2: said that, this was so exciting. We were like the
• 11:56
Speaker 2: show was opening, like this was stuff I hadn't really
• 11:59
Speaker 2: seen before in a show. It just showed the creativity
• 12:01
Speaker 2: of Bill and Adam Eernstein and the fact that the
• 12:04
Speaker 2: show is opening with this music video of how life
• 12:07
Speaker 2: in the hospital when it's grooving is like a well
• 12:09
Speaker 2: oiled machine. I just thought it was so clever.
• 12:11
Speaker 1: Yeah, I took notice of that because I don't, you know,
• 12:14
Speaker 1: watching this again, is it all seems a little brand
• 12:17
Speaker 1: new to me, And I don't mean to We were
• 12:19
Speaker 1: a part of the show and so it was just
• 12:21
Speaker 1: an amazing moment for me. I'm gonna sound like, you know,
• 12:24
Speaker 1: I'm cocky and arrogant, but you know, watching it, I
• 12:26
Speaker 1: was like, Wow, this is a really really genius way
• 12:30
Speaker 1: of showing how awesome or how InSync this hospital is.
• 12:34
Speaker 1: For that, I was like, I love the show even
• 12:36
Speaker 1: more now, you know, now that Now that it's twenty
• 12:39
Speaker 1: years later, I'm like, Wow, we really were innovative, and
• 12:41
Speaker 1: we really were different for primetime television. You know, regardless
• 12:46
Speaker 1: of how many people watched the show at the time,
• 12:49
Speaker 1: you know, it really still does hold up.
• 12:51
Speaker 2: Yeah, I have to say, and you can be that's
• 12:54
Speaker 2: not you being arrogant because we weren't the genius people
• 12:56
Speaker 2: behind writing it, although we.
• 12:58
Speaker 1: Yeah, but we were a part of it. I know,
• 12:59
Speaker 1: I know, But and you had a really big part
• 13:01
Speaker 1: about it, you know, you did. You told the story.
• 13:03
Speaker 2: I know, but I'm just saying like this, I think,
• 13:05
Speaker 2: you know, as credit to Bill and all the writers,
• 13:07
Speaker 2: this was just so original and different and exciting. By
• 13:12
Speaker 2: the way, how funny is it that I have a Walkman.
• 13:14
Speaker 2: It must be two thousand and one. I guess there
• 13:16
Speaker 2: were still cassette walkmans. I would have thought it would
• 13:18
Speaker 2: have been a disc but uh, I guess JD had
• 13:20
Speaker 2: had a mix on a cassette.
• 13:22
Speaker 1: Dude. You know, speaking of Walkman's, well, we we could
• 13:27
Speaker 1: talk about it after season one, but I just remember
• 13:29
Speaker 1: you walking the streets of New York City with your
• 13:31
Speaker 1: yellow Walkman, listening to Michelle Branch.
• 13:35
Speaker 2: Very to me when I closed my eyes it to you.
• 13:41
Speaker 2: I see that was my jam. I am not a
• 13:43
Speaker 2: hum about loving Michelle Branch.
• 13:45
Speaker 1: I remember you walking out the house yellow. It was
• 13:47
Speaker 1: a yellow walkman, the sony Walkman, the dope Sony Walkman's
• 13:50
Speaker 1: that everybody if you had the yellow Sonny Walkman, you
• 13:53
  Speaker 1: had the dope.
• 13:54
  Speaker 3: You know.
• 13:54
Speaker 1: Everything else was all right, but that was the one
• 13:56
Speaker 1: right And I remember you being like, well, I'm out,
• 13:59
Speaker 1: I'm going to a heard. That was when we were
• 14:01
Speaker 1: both in New York, living together and you were doing
• 14:03
  Speaker 1: a journal.
• 14:04
Speaker 2: That's a whole episode is Donald and I living together
• 14:06
Speaker 2: in Manhattan. We rented a loft together. He was doing
• 14:10
Speaker 2: a movie and I was doing Shakespeare in the Park
• 14:12
Speaker 2: and I would go out and bop my head with
• 14:14
Speaker 2: my yellow walkman cranking. You're everywhere to me and I
• 14:19
  Speaker 2: close my eyes.
• 14:20
  Speaker 1: It's you, Eyesy, I'm not alone, dude. I think it's
• 14:27
Speaker 1: very much JD that you had a walkman with a
• 14:30
Speaker 1: cassette tape in it.
• 14:31
Speaker 2: Yeah. I noticed that the first exterior shot is still
• 14:34
Speaker 2: not our hospital. They at two minutes in they cut too,
• 14:37
Speaker 2: which was an establishing shot from the pilot of me
• 14:40
Speaker 2: coming to work for the first day. I think that's
• 14:42
Speaker 2: the very that's the same shot, exact same shot that
• 14:44
Speaker 2: used in the pilot of me showing up to work
• 14:46
Speaker 2: for the first day.
• 14:47
Speaker 1: Do you remember going to that hospital and us shooting
• 14:49
Speaker 1: a bunch of entrances like me and you walking in,
• 14:52
Speaker 1: you walking in by yourself, you and Sarah walking in.
• 14:55
Speaker 1: Remember all of that. Yeah?
• 14:56
Speaker 2: Yeah, but yeah, but that was that was for the pilot, right.
• 15:00
Speaker 1: No, that was for the show itself. We did a
• 15:02
Speaker 1: bunch of We did a bunch of versions of us
• 15:04
Speaker 1: walking into this hospital, and some of it never got used.
• 15:08
Speaker 2: But at a certain point they just stopped using this
• 15:11
Speaker 2: exterior because it was not our exterior at all. I
• 15:13
Speaker 2: don't know where the where the hell that was.
• 15:15
Speaker 1: I noticed that this episode has a lot to do
• 15:18
Speaker 1: with relationships, you know what I mean, and how we
• 15:21
Speaker 1: all started off kind of on rocky ground. You and
• 15:24
Speaker 1: I had the same relationship, and you and the janitor
• 15:27
Speaker 1: have the same relationship all the way through, but everyone else,
• 15:31
Speaker 1: no matter how it's connected, has a different relationship. In
• 15:35
Speaker 1: this episode. At this point, you don't mind being in
• 15:37
Speaker 1: the friend zone with Elliott, and as a matter of fact,
• 15:40
Speaker 1: he thinks it's kind of cool that, you know, he
• 15:42
Speaker 1: has a colleague from work that wants to hang out
• 15:44
Speaker 1: with him, and Turk Turk and Caller on together yet
• 15:48
Speaker 1: you know what I mean, they're just starting their courtship,
• 15:50
Speaker 1: you and doctor Cox, even though he's still giving you
• 15:53
Speaker 1: advice and stuff like that. I also noticed that this
• 15:56
Speaker 1: is the first time he calls you a woman's name.
• 15:58
Speaker 2: Find the show too where he catches men's smoking.
• 16:01
Speaker 1: Yeah, he calls you Susan. But this is you know,
• 16:04
Speaker 1: you guys weren't in sync yet, so you don't really
• 16:06
Speaker 1: know this guy and you're trying to get to know him,
• 16:09
Speaker 1: or JD's trying to get to know him, but they
• 16:11
Speaker 1: don't really know each other that well yet. And I'm
• 16:15
Speaker 1: jumping ahead, But that stuff in his apartment is phenomenal.
• 16:20
Speaker 1: Going back and looking at it, I was like I
• 16:22
Speaker 1: had no idea one that it was this funny, and
• 16:25
Speaker 1: two that it was this important, you know what I mean,
• 16:28
Speaker 1: Like I had no clue watching it back then. It
• 16:30
Speaker 1: kind of seems like a blur. And you know, to
• 16:33
Speaker 1: be honest with you, most of this episode, I don't remember.
• 16:36
  Speaker 2: Yeah, there's things, there's things I don't remember. I don't
• 16:38
Speaker 2: remember my It's funny, I don't remember my head exploding.
• 16:42
  Speaker 2: I mean, really no, I don't. I mean I remember,
• 16:44
Speaker 2: I don't remember doing that gag. A lot of the
• 16:46
Speaker 2: stunts and stuff I remember, I remember falling over when
• 16:49
Speaker 2: he closes the door on my on my leg and stuff.
• 16:51
Speaker 2: But the head exploding, I don't remember shooting that. But
• 16:53
Speaker 2: I want to just pick up what you said. I agree.
• 16:56
Speaker 2: A lot of it is about establishing these relationships that
• 16:59
Speaker 2: were going to follow ultimately for nine seasons. And also
• 17:02
Speaker 2: Judy really comes through in this episode. Judy Ray says, amazing,
• 17:06
Speaker 2: she does some awesome work, and it's establishing a really
• 17:11
Speaker 2: important theme that I think comes across throughout the whole
• 17:14
Speaker 2: series is that we young doctors are learning the importance
• 17:18
Speaker 2: of nurses because we come out of medical school and
• 17:21
Speaker 2: we're super cocky and we think we're going to be badasses.
• 17:25
Speaker 2: But we learn right off the bat, you know, not
• 17:28
Speaker 2: to be cheesy and say the theme song. But we
• 17:30
Speaker 2: can't do this all on our own. We need the
• 17:32
Speaker 2: help of the nurses. And every doctor we ever talked
• 17:35
Speaker 2: to in doing research would say, yeah, I mean the
• 17:37
Speaker 2: nurses run the show. You know, if you're a Laman
• 17:39
Speaker 2: and you don't know you have no idea how much
• 17:42
Speaker 2: work and pressure and stress the nurses are all constantly under.
• 17:46
Speaker 2: And I was thinking about that now, especially with the
• 17:48
Speaker 2: Corona crisis going on and watching all the news, and
• 17:51
Speaker 2: I was really, I don't know, extra moved by it
• 17:53
Speaker 2: in this episode, seeing like that those nurses are just
• 17:55
Speaker 2: working their asses off, and Sarah's character in particular needs
• 17:58
Speaker 2: to learn that, like, no, no, we're a team and
• 18:01
Speaker 2: you need to like check your arrogance at the door,
• 18:04
Speaker 2: and this is really about like we're gonna do this
• 18:07
Speaker 2: together and you need the nurses to be on your side.
• 18:10
Speaker 1: Absolutely absolutely with that. I agree with you one hundred percent.
• 18:13
Speaker 1: It's true. Nurses are the heart and soul of the hospital.
• 18:16
Speaker 1: Just to piggyback on what you said about Sarah, though,
• 18:19
Speaker 1: a perfect example of someone who's not sincere about their
• 18:22
Speaker 1: apology is when they apologize to you and then it's
• 18:25
Speaker 1: followed with but just to be clear, you know what
• 18:28
Speaker 1: I mean. And she totally does that in this episode,
• 18:32
Speaker 1: and everything that happens to her after this is because
• 18:35
Speaker 1: of how she just consistently put her foot in her
• 18:39
Speaker 1: mouth throughout this episode. Now, I wonder, if I don't remember,
• 18:43
Speaker 1: if it carries on through this season, but through the
• 18:47
Speaker 1: career of the show. Through the show, her character always
• 18:50
Speaker 1: had the worst luck.
• 18:51
Speaker 2: Yeah, well again, that comes from her life too. I mean,
• 18:54
Speaker 2: Sarah is a klutzy gal. She'll be the first to
• 18:56
Speaker 2: admit when she comes on our show. And Sarah come
• 19:00
Speaker 2: in from the weekend every single time, without fail, every
• 19:03
Speaker 2: single Monday morning, and you're like, you, guys, are not
• 19:06
Speaker 2: gonna believe what happened to me this weekend? And she
• 19:08
Speaker 2: would go on to tell the craziest story that you
• 19:11
Speaker 2: would be like a once in a in a two
• 19:13
Speaker 2: year period to a normal person, something like this would
• 19:17
Speaker 2: happen to you, and it would happen to Sarah every weekend,
• 19:19
  Speaker 2: and we'd be we'd be like, Sarah, you're you're putting
• 19:22
Speaker 2: us on it. Can't that can't have happened to you
• 19:23
Speaker 2: this weekend, and you're not gonna believe it. And then
• 19:26
Speaker 2: on top of that, and then my keys fell, and
• 19:29
Speaker 2: then my wedding ring got lost, and.
• 19:32
Speaker 1: I remember one story was like a car lost control
• 19:35
Speaker 1: and started barreling down a hill and her fiance at the.
• 19:40
Speaker 2: Time had to drop in the car.
• 19:43
Speaker 1: Or grabbed a kid out of the way, or something
• 19:45
  Speaker 1: like that.
• 19:45
Speaker 2: I remember, and when there was then her wedding ring
• 19:48
Speaker 2: fell down a gutter, and every every weekend it was
• 19:52
Speaker 2: like it was like here we go, and Sarah would
• 19:53
Speaker 2: have a half hour story like you guys, and she
• 19:55
Speaker 2: was always breathless. She was like, you're not gonna believe
• 19:58
Speaker 2: what donald. At two fifty four, one of the most
• 20:02
Speaker 2: important characters in Scrubs history is introduced a character very
• 20:07
Speaker 2: near and dear to our hearts named Rowdy.
• 20:09
Speaker 1: Yes, absolutely, I made that note. Also, Holy cow, Rowdy
• 20:14
Speaker 1: that joke. When we were filming it, I was like,
• 20:17
Speaker 1: this is the oddest thing I've ever done in my life.
• 20:20
Speaker 1: This is a stuffed dog, right, and we're gonna pretend
• 20:23
Speaker 1: like it's our pet.
• 20:24
Speaker 2: I think Bill will have to ask him. Let's make
• 20:26
Speaker 2: a note to ask him when he comes on. But
• 20:27
Speaker 2: I think that the idea was that some doctor had
• 20:30
Speaker 2: told him that they never had time to have a pet,
• 20:33
Speaker 2: especially when they were just starting out, because their hours
• 20:36
Speaker 2: were so insane, and so he thought it would be
• 20:40
Speaker 2: funny if if we got a taxiderman pet.
• 20:43
Speaker 1: I mean, that's the oddest thing I've ever heard of
• 20:45
  Speaker 1: in my life.
• 20:46
Speaker 2: I know, just I mean, where did they find that thing?
• 20:49
Speaker 1: Exactly who in that right mind was like, you know what,
• 20:53
  Speaker 1: I'm misbuster.
• 20:54
Speaker 2: No, I think people do him. I do think it's
• 20:56
  Speaker 2: a thing. I mean, I really think. I'm sure out
• 20:58
Speaker 2: there are fans with you're listening, you can write in
• 21:01
Speaker 2: and tell us. But I do think there are people
• 21:03
Speaker 2: that taxidermy their pet.
• 21:04
Speaker 1: Okay, I don't understand, Joelle, have.
• 21:07
Speaker 2: You ever heard of this? Joelle's nodding, she has heard
• 21:09
  Speaker 2: of this.
• 21:10
Speaker 1: Barbara streisand Barbara streisand I believe his taxidermied and cloned
• 21:16
Speaker 1: her dogs. She clones her dog because she's sorry so much.
• 21:20
Speaker 1: I think she's on like volume five. We have the
• 21:23
Speaker 1: technology to clone animals.
• 21:25
Speaker 2: Yeah, you can clone your dog. You didn't know that.
• 21:27
Speaker 1: I did not know that.
• 21:28
Speaker 2: Yeah, you can clone your dog. It all started with
• 21:30
Speaker 2: Dolly the sheep. Remember they cloned the sheep Dolly.
• 21:33
Speaker 1: I thought that was like only a couple of years ago.
• 21:35
Speaker 2: And that was many years ago, and then since since now,
• 21:38
Speaker 2: if you're Barbara streisand I'm sure it's very expensive, you
• 21:40
Speaker 2: can clone your dog. So rowdy was taxidermy? Now? I
• 21:44
Speaker 2: tried to get rowdy when the show was over, and
• 21:47
Speaker 2: I listen, we did nine years I said to Bill,
• 21:51
Speaker 2: the only thing I want from everything is Rowdy. I
• 21:54
Speaker 2: think it would be a wonderful souvenir for me to have.
• 21:56
Speaker 2: And he said sure. And then the people at Disney
• 21:59
Speaker 2: who owned the show said, no, you can't have Rowdy.
• 22:03
Speaker 2: He belongs to Disney. And I pictured, like you remember
• 22:07
Speaker 2: at the end of Raiders of the Lost Ark, how
• 22:09
Speaker 2: they put the arc of the Covenant way in the back.
• 22:12
Speaker 2: I pictured Rowdy going into like an endless infinite uh
• 22:16
Speaker 2: of you knowrehouse warehouse in the back, and like the
• 22:20
Speaker 2: forklift is going by like other taxidermy dogs, and he's
• 22:23
Speaker 2: going like way, way way.
• 22:25
Speaker 1: In the back, right the dog from Frasier's tax exactly exactly.
• 22:29
Speaker 2: And I was just so bumped. So when I made
• 22:31
Speaker 2: my film, wish I was here that you were in,
• 22:33
Speaker 2: very very funnily as the Ashton Martin Dealer, I said
• 22:37
Speaker 2: to Disney, Hey, for the scrubs fans, I thought it'd
• 22:40
Speaker 2: be funny if I put Rowdy like in the back
• 22:42
Speaker 2: of a scene, like an Easter egg for them to find.
• 22:44
Speaker 2: And I said, cand I borrow the dog, just to put,
• 22:47
Speaker 2: you know, just a little Easter egg for everybody. They said,
• 22:51
Speaker 2: we will, but we're gonna send him with a bodyguard. Wow,
• 22:53
Speaker 2: because we're worried that you're gonna try and steal him
• 22:56
Speaker 2: once he's delivered. So they sent Row with a handler.
• 23:01
Speaker 2: They sent the taxi dermy dog with a handler.
• 23:04
Speaker 1: I feel like that's understandable though, because I feel like
• 23:06
Speaker 1: if they didn't send the dog with the handler somewhere
• 23:08
Speaker 1: along the way, the dog would have got lost.
• 23:10
Speaker 2: I wasn't gonna steal the dog. I was gonna build
• 23:12
Speaker 2: my best behavior. Listen, he didn't look good though he
• 23:15
Speaker 2: looked he looked, he did not look as good as
• 23:16
Speaker 2: he looked thin. I remember. I know it makes no sense,
• 23:27
Speaker 2: but I remember when he showed up on set with
• 23:29
Speaker 2: his bodyguard, thinking like, he doesn't look good. He's not
• 23:32
Speaker 2: being taken care of.
• 23:33
Speaker 1: He'd not be taken care of it all.
• 23:35
Speaker 2: Like one of his paws was all janky, and like
• 23:37
Speaker 2: I had to like blew it.
• 23:46
Speaker 1: Do you remember the prop master who hid Rowdy.
• 23:49
Speaker 2: I don't know if this is Scrubs urban legend or not,
• 23:52
Speaker 2: but go ahead, you tell it.
• 23:53
Speaker 1: Well. I just know that we had a prop master
• 23:55
Speaker 1: who didn't work out.
• 23:57
Speaker 2: Yes he was he was let go right and to.
• 24:00
Speaker 1: Get back at production he decided that he was going
• 24:03
Speaker 1: to hide Rowdy in the ceiling. Is that where you
• 24:07
  Speaker 1: hit it?
• 24:07
Speaker 2: Well, as the Scrubs urban legend goes, he was let
• 24:10
Speaker 2: go and he was angry about being let go. And
• 24:13
Speaker 2: then you know, we were in the hospital that had
• 24:14
Speaker 2: all those you know, lower tiled ceilings that you see
• 24:17
Speaker 2: in hospitals, and apparently he he hid Rowdy up in
• 24:21
Speaker 2: the ceiling tiles above the proper. Oh that's when, by
• 24:27
Speaker 2: the way, that's when everyone started to be like, oh shit,
• 24:29
Speaker 2: if we lose Rowdy, this is bad. We need a backup.
• 24:32
Speaker 2: And that's when they got Stephen.
• 24:34
Speaker 1: Right, but they had like three or four different rowdies though, so.
• 24:37
Speaker 2: There were just two. There was Rowdy and Stephen. Do
• 24:39
Speaker 2: you remember, because there was a whole episode where where Judy.
• 24:42
Speaker 1: Which where uh uh?
• 24:46
Speaker 2: And then I feel their balls and then I feel
• 24:48
Speaker 2: their balls and I'm like, nope, that's Steven. So in
• 24:51
Speaker 2: the world of Scrubs, JD had memorized the two different
• 24:54
Speaker 2: dog taxidermy dog's ball sacks up, that's Steven. So let's
• 25:00
Speaker 2: talk about our apartment set, because this is the first
• 25:02
Speaker 2: time you're seeing our apartment. This was built into the hospital.
• 25:07
Speaker 2: You know, Normally you'd have a set like this on
• 25:08
Speaker 2: a sound stage. But in order for us to do
• 25:11
Speaker 2: the whole show at this abandoned hospital, Cabint McMullin, our
• 25:15
Speaker 2: genius production designer, found a way to build all of
• 25:18
Speaker 2: this into I don't know what it was. It was
• 25:21
Speaker 2: like the urgent care wing or something.
• 25:23
Speaker 1: No, if this wasn't in the urgent care wing, this
• 25:24
Speaker 1: was actually in the basement of the hospital. Urgent care
• 25:27
Speaker 1: turned out to be the bar, the bar and all
• 25:30
Speaker 1: of that stuff, right, but this was this was actually
• 25:33
Speaker 1: right by the children's ward in the hospital. So if
• 25:36
  Speaker 1: you went, they.
• 25:37
Speaker 2: Knocked out some walls and so this was. This was
• 25:39
Speaker 2: in you know, this looks like prett damn good apartment,
• 25:41
Speaker 2: but it was in the hospital.
• 25:43
Speaker 1: Yeah. It was also the loading area also, so when
• 25:47
Speaker 1: they would cut and at night when they wanted to
• 25:49
Speaker 1: bring things into the hospital. On the other side of
• 25:52
Speaker 1: the wall, there was this big garage door that you
• 25:54
Speaker 1: could open up and load all the equipment. I remember.
• 25:57
Speaker 2: It was always incredibly hot, right, there was no, it
• 26:00
Speaker 2: wasn't it wasn't meant to be a sound stage with
• 26:03
  Speaker 2: lights and everything.
• 26:04
Speaker 1: The whole hospital was on fire because you know, you
• 26:07
Speaker 1: couldn't run air condition when we're running like we used
• 26:10
Speaker 1: to have the tubes. Remember, we would have the tube.
• 26:12
Speaker 2: God, they'd have a tube wrangler.
• 26:14
Speaker 1: Even in our dressing rooms. They gave us like halfway
• 26:17
Speaker 1: through season one, they gave us our own little air
• 26:20
Speaker 1: conditioning units to keep us cool because the hospital got
• 26:23
Speaker 1: so hot in the summer.
• 26:24
Speaker 2: Right, but I remember, so there was an air conditioning
• 26:27
Speaker 2: in the hospital, and so they had these exterior units
• 26:30
Speaker 2: and they had these tubes. I'm sure you've seen them.
• 26:33
Speaker 2: They were like, I don't know, two feet in diameter.
• 26:36
Speaker 2: They'd be running everywhere to try and make it comfortable,
• 26:38
Speaker 2: but they were. It was someone's full time job to
• 26:41
Speaker 2: try and wrangle the tubes.
• 26:42
Speaker 1: Yeah. So what I noticed about this episode I kept
• 26:46
Speaker 1: waiting for one line that made it into the promo
• 26:50
Speaker 1: for the first episode but wasn't in the first episode.
• 26:54
Speaker 1: And that's when Elliott says to me, Hey, when did
• 26:58
Speaker 1: you meet Morgan Freeman.
• 26:59
Speaker 2: I laughed out loud when that line came up. I mean,
• 27:02
Speaker 2: I knew it was coming, and you know, there's some
• 27:04
Speaker 2: jokes in this that, even though you know them, I
• 27:06
Speaker 2: just laughed out loud when I heard that. It's just
• 27:08
Speaker 2: that was so frigging funny.
• 27:10
Speaker 1: Yeah, I laughed my ass off, and you know it's
• 27:12
Speaker 1: really my mom. But that's not even the funny part.
• 27:16
Speaker 1: The funny part is she goes she has lovely freckles.
• 27:20
Speaker 2: I love hers. I love her freckles. Okay, So the
• 27:27
Speaker 2: next thing I wrote down was Todd the introduction of
• 27:31
Speaker 2: Rob Mashchio and Rob kind of is this guy, right?
• 27:34
Speaker 2: I mean he not that he was like I mean,
• 27:36
Speaker 2: not that he was a womanizer like this, but he
• 27:38
Speaker 2: was kind of like a funny, funny jockey kind of guy, right.
• 27:42
Speaker 1: Absolutely, he was very well. He was a pretty good athlete,
• 27:46
Speaker 1: you know what I mean. He took really good care
• 27:47
Speaker 1: of his body and stuff like that.
• 27:49
Speaker 2: I remember he told me he ate a pine of
• 27:50
Speaker 2: Ben and Jerry's every day, which I always found amazing
• 27:53
Speaker 2: because he would have to work out like that much
• 27:56
Speaker 2: extra to work off of pine of Ben Jerry's a day.
• 27:59
Speaker 2: So he must have worked out a time to have
• 28:00
  Speaker 2: his Todd body.
• 28:02
Speaker 1: And he was a lot older than us at the
• 28:04
  Speaker 1: time too.
• 28:04
Speaker 2: I think he's seventy five in this episode. No, he
• 28:09
Speaker 2: does look good. I I remember he wasn't like like
• 28:11
Speaker 2: that old, but I remember he was older than us.
• 28:14
Speaker 1: He was a lot old. He was like in his
• 28:16
Speaker 1: I'm gonna say thirty something, We were twenty something, and
• 28:19
Speaker 1: he was like thirty five, thirty six.
• 28:21
Speaker 2: Rob's gonna come on the podcast.
• 28:23
Speaker 1: And I really enjoyed the fact that, you know, you
• 28:26
Speaker 1: do projects and sometimes they don't really put the effort
• 28:29
Speaker 1: into develop you know, these romantic relationships with the characters.
• 28:34
Speaker 1: And I really enjoyed the effort put into Carla and
• 28:39
Speaker 1: Turk's courtship and how you know what I mean, and
• 28:42
Speaker 1: how it became a storyline in the show. And it
• 28:45
Speaker 1: wasn't just something that from the beginning they had chemistry
• 28:48
Speaker 1: and now they're dating. You know, Turk had to work
• 28:51
Speaker 1: for it, Carla had to work for it. And then
• 28:54
Speaker 1: and the ultimate thing was at the end they you know,
• 28:56
Speaker 1: they're they're married with kids and stuff like that. I
• 28:59
Speaker 1: love that we see their growth from the pilot to
• 29:02
Speaker 1: this episode and then as the show goes along.
• 29:06
Speaker 2: You guys were such a good ying yang for each
• 29:08
Speaker 2: other too. I mean, you're, you know, the sort of
• 29:11
Speaker 2: silly jockey surgeon and she's just like so smart and
• 29:16
Speaker 2: clever and and kind of running the entire hospital. And
• 29:20
Speaker 2: I just thought the way that they wrote your flirtation
• 29:23
Speaker 2: and your and your chemistry was really and you guys
• 29:25
Speaker 2: performed it really, really well. Can I tell them the
• 29:27
Speaker 2: story about what Casey first said when I tried to
• 29:29
  Speaker 2: set you up?
• 29:30
  Speaker 1: Absolutely.
• 29:30
Speaker 2: We were in the We were in a nightclub, Donald
• 29:32
Speaker 2: and I and I see Casey Cobb, the beautiful Casey Cob,
• 29:36
Speaker 2: across the club, and she was with Jessica Simpson.
• 29:39
Speaker 1: Because she was she is her assistant.
• 29:42
Speaker 2: She was her assistant and now they're like best friends.
• 29:45
Speaker 2: And I knew them just as acquaintances. And Donald had
• 29:48
Speaker 2: such a crush on Casey. He was just staring at her,
• 29:50
  Speaker 2: like just like go I'd like, I couldn't, couldn't even
• 29:53
Speaker 2: think about other stuff, wouldn't even wouldn't just like lost.
• 29:57
Speaker 2: So finally I got the courage to go up to
• 29:59
Speaker 2: Casey and I'm hey, so trying to be the best
• 30:02
Speaker 2: wing man in the world.
• 30:03
Speaker 1: And I'm like, hey, so, I appreciate you one hundred
• 30:05
  Speaker 1: percent for this.
• 30:06
Speaker 2: So I was like, hey, my buddy really likes you.
• 30:09
Speaker 2: He really thinks you're really beautiful. She goes who and
• 30:12
Speaker 2: I point over like not over to Donald and she
• 30:15
Speaker 2: goes Then you have like nine kids and I always
• 30:24
Speaker 2: thought that was so funny. Cut to them getting married
• 30:26
  Speaker 2: in my backyard.
• 30:27
Speaker 1: Yeah, at the time, I didn't have nine kids. I
• 30:29
  Speaker 1: only had four.
• 30:30
Speaker 2: I had had four. But it was a funny, sassy
• 30:32
Speaker 2: line from her. Yeah, and your charms obviously worked because however,
• 30:36
Speaker 2: many years later they were married in my backyard.
• 30:39
Speaker 1: Yeah, thanks to you being a great wingman.
• 30:42
Speaker 2: It all started with a wingman line.
• 30:43
Speaker 1: I remember me being like, yeah, will you go over
• 30:45
Speaker 1: there and talk to her for me? And you being like,
• 30:47
Speaker 1: are you fucking kidding me? Go over yourself. I'm like,
• 30:50
Speaker 1: oh no, no, no, no, no, no no, and.
• 30:51
Speaker 2: You're like, oh no, I remember you think I got
• 30:54
  Speaker 2: the courage.
• 30:55
Speaker 1: I got the No, you did get the courage. But
• 30:57
Speaker 1: you went over there, and then you came back and
• 30:58
Speaker 1: I'm like, well, what did she say? Did I tell
• 31:02
Speaker 1: you or you told me right No? No, no, you
• 31:06
Speaker 1: told me right away. You're like, dude, She was like,
• 31:08
Speaker 1: doesn't he have like nine kids? And I remember being like,
• 31:11
Speaker 1: oh no, because I was like, that's what the ladies
• 31:16
Speaker 1: in California think, that's what Hollywood thinks about me. I'm
• 31:18
Speaker 1: a dude with all the kids.
• 31:20
Speaker 2: Well, it's funny that it's funny that like, she wasn't like,
• 31:22
Speaker 2: oh no he's not cute, or oh no, he's not funny,
• 31:25
Speaker 2: or oh no, I don't think he's funny on TV
• 31:27
Speaker 2: and movies. She was just like, doesn't he have like
• 31:29
Speaker 2: nine keys? With herself accent? Anyway, this should be an
• 31:33
Speaker 2: inspiration to you men and women out there who think
• 31:37
Speaker 2: you can't possibly get that person you have a crush on,
• 31:40
Speaker 2: and they might even open with a line equivalent to
• 31:42
Speaker 2: doesn't he have like nine kids? But if you just
• 31:44
Speaker 2: are persistent like Donald was, you could one day get
• 31:46
Speaker 2: married in my backyard.
• 31:48
  Speaker 1: All right?
• 31:48
Speaker 2: Should we move on?
• 31:49
  Speaker 4: Oh?
• 31:49
Speaker 2: We talk about Rob running line because I always thought
• 31:51
Speaker 2: that was funny. So Rob as a testament to Rob Mashio,
• 31:54
Speaker 2: who played Todd. He would take it so seriously. And
• 31:57
Speaker 2: I'm not making fun of Rob, because I get it.
• 31:59
Speaker 2: He didn't have a lot to do in every episode,
• 32:01
Speaker 2: and he would always make sure he was doing the
• 32:02
Speaker 2: best he could. But sometimes we'd look over and he
• 32:05
Speaker 2: would just be running his one line over and over
• 32:08
  Speaker 2: and over.
• 32:11
Speaker 1: Air five yeah, air five.
• 32:13
Speaker 2: Yeah. We just see him a five Like I'd be
• 32:15
Speaker 2: like dying five. Rob's over there running line air.
• 32:17
Speaker 1: Five yeah, A five?
• 32:19
Speaker 2: High five Air five, Air five. They really did hurt,
• 32:24
Speaker 2: those those friggin' rob high fives.
• 32:27
Speaker 1: For what it's worth, I was about to say it
• 32:29
Speaker 1: seemed like you got used to it after a while.
• 32:31
Speaker 2: No, they really hurt, and the whoppersh noise was added,
• 32:33
Speaker 2: but man, they really hurt. Sarah digging the grave at
• 32:37
Speaker 2: around eight minutes and forty six seconds, that's become like
• 32:39
Speaker 2: a popular meme. I always see, like, you know, when
• 32:42
Speaker 2: fans send us gifts and memes and I see him
• 32:44
Speaker 2: on the internet, on the interwebs. That's what I always see,
• 32:46
Speaker 2: is it's funny watching it when you go, oh, that's
• 32:49
Speaker 2: that meme I've seen before. But that Sara digging is
• 32:51
Speaker 2: one people use when like they're putting their foot in
• 32:53
Speaker 2: their mouth, dig in the grave.
• 32:54
Speaker 1: I forgot. I totally forgot about that, and so when
• 32:56
Speaker 1: I saw it, it was really refreshing and really funny. Huh yeah,
• 33:00
Speaker 1: it was very funny. And then they throw dirt on
• 33:02
Speaker 1: her too, at her rose. That's a great joke.
• 33:05
Speaker 2: The next thing I wrote down was, oh, the would
• 33:07
Speaker 2: you like to play a game thing with the robot voice?
• 33:09
Speaker 2: Do you remember what movie that's from?
• 33:11
Speaker 1: Of course War Games?
• 33:13
Speaker 2: Yes, one of my favorite movies.
• 33:15
Speaker 1: And then the other one was from Buck Rogers B
• 33:17
Speaker 1: to B to BD BD. Hey Buck b that's Buck Rogers.
• 33:21
Speaker 2: But war Games? Would you how about a thermone nuclear war?
• 33:26
  Speaker 2: Remember that?
• 33:26
Speaker 1: How about? And yeah, it was Matthew Broderick and Ali Sheety.
• 33:29
Speaker 2: Of course, I remember that they're listening to this podcast
• 33:31
Speaker 2: and you haven't seen War Games. I need you to
• 33:34
Speaker 2: put it on after this podcast is over because it
• 33:36
Speaker 2: is such a good movie.
• 33:37
Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean, you don't have to put it on
• 33:39
Speaker 1: after the podcast, I.
• 33:40
Speaker 2: Think, yeah, well not during, right. I remember being a
• 33:42
Speaker 2: kid and thinking, well, everything Matthew Broderick did when I
• 33:45
Speaker 2: was a kid, I just thought was incredible. I just
• 33:47
Speaker 2: wanted to be Matthew Broderick.
• 33:49
Speaker 1: Especially in war games. In war games and in Ferris
• 33:51
  Speaker 1: Bueller's Day.
• 33:52
Speaker 2: Oh yes, of course. I mean he's kind of the
• 33:54
  Speaker 2: same character.
• 33:55
Speaker 1: Well kind of s and war games he was like
• 33:58
Speaker 1: a kid that didn't have a lot of friends, and
• 34:00
Speaker 1: Ferris Bueller he was the king of He's such.
• 34:02
Speaker 2: A good actor. Though. In Wargames, you know, by the way,
• 34:05
Speaker 2: a little trivia, they made a sequel to Wargames that
• 34:08
Speaker 2: the writer director had nothing to do with what was
• 34:11
Speaker 2: it called. I don't know. Joelle will insert that here
• 34:14
Speaker 2: later in her voice.
• 34:16
Speaker 4: War Games the Dead Code, which came out in two
• 34:19
Speaker 4: thousand and eight, attrected by Stuart Gillard.
• 34:23
Speaker 2: Yeah, but neither the two stars Ali Sheety or Matthew
• 34:25
Speaker 2: Broddock were in it, right right? That one's not the
• 34:28
Speaker 2: sequel is not Zach and Donald approved. But the first
• 34:32
Speaker 2: movie is. Oh, I just the eleven thirty three. I
• 34:34
Speaker 2: just wanted to point out that's the very first time
• 34:36
Speaker 2: we saw the lounge, our Doctor's lounge where so many
• 34:39
Speaker 2: much of the show ends up taking place, and the
• 34:41
Speaker 2: introduction of Doug. I didn't realize Doug got introduced so early.
• 34:44
  Speaker 1: Neither did I. I didn't realize that either. I also
• 34:48
Speaker 1: remember that pac Man machine and how when we were
• 34:51
Speaker 1: working that was an actual, real working pac Man game
• 34:55
Speaker 1: and I would get kicked off a set. I remember
• 34:58
Speaker 1: Franklin Got Better and Scott Harris kicking me up. These
• 35:01
Speaker 1: were the first ads on.
• 35:04
  Speaker 2: Scrub Assistant Directors.
• 35:05
Speaker 1: Yeah, I remember them kicking me off set because I
• 35:07
Speaker 1: kept trying to get the high score on pac Man.
• 35:10
Speaker 1: I remember that pac Man game, and I remember when
• 35:12
Speaker 1: they finally made a sort of pac man game didn't work,
• 35:14
Speaker 1: and I was so pissed off.
• 35:15
Speaker 2: At a certain point, they made it so it wouldn't
• 35:17
Speaker 2: function even if you plugged it in. They got wise.
• 35:19
Speaker 1: I loved that. I thought that was the coolest set
• 35:22
  Speaker 1: piece ever.
• 35:23
Speaker 2: And I was happy to see Doug because he's very funny.
• 35:26
Speaker 2: And I remember in the Wizard of ob episode which
• 35:29
Speaker 2: I directed, one of the funniest lines he ever said,
• 35:32
Speaker 2: which was, dead people should be dead. Do you remember
• 35:35
Speaker 2: when I come back to life?
• 35:36
  Speaker 1: I do remember.
• 35:37
Speaker 2: Why are you hitting me? I thought you were dead?
• 35:39
Speaker 2: Why are you hitting me? Because dead people should be dead?
• 35:43
Speaker 1: I would have done the same.
• 35:44
Speaker 2: Thing, Okay, I thought at thirteen fifty, there's a cool
• 35:47
Speaker 2: moment where, just stylistically, Adam Bernstein and again just sort
• 35:50
Speaker 2: of setting up the style of the show where everyone's
• 35:53
Speaker 2: looking into the lens talking to me, and then it
• 35:55
Speaker 2: cuts to Judy and she does it, and then she
• 35:57
Speaker 2: looks down and the camera pulls back and I'm next
• 36:00
  Speaker 2: to her.
• 36:01
Speaker 1: I just think she looks at you.
• 36:02
Speaker 2: I stylistically, that was really kind of a cool thing.
• 36:05
Speaker 1: That was pretty cool.
• 36:06
Speaker 2: Adam sort of set the bar early on as the
• 36:08
Speaker 2: director of episode one and two that the camera was
• 36:12
Speaker 2: going to be a character in the show, and every
• 36:13
Speaker 2: director that came on after would add their own little
• 36:16
Speaker 2: bit of style to it, especially in this first season,
• 36:19
Speaker 2: you know, figuring out innovative ways to move the camera
• 36:22
Speaker 2: and to do colored camera shots and trick shots.
• 36:24
Speaker 1: Adam really he did us a great service, him and
• 36:27
Speaker 1: Bill by giving us something. In hospital shows, it's really
• 36:31
Speaker 1: about the doctors and the nurses and everything like that.
• 36:35
Speaker 1: Adam and Bill found a way to make the hospital
• 36:37
Speaker 1: a character in the show. And they found a way
• 36:40
Speaker 1: to do that early on, you know what I mean.
• 36:43
Speaker 1: So when you're there, it's never the same. It doesn't
• 36:45
Speaker 1: feel like, you know, I'm watching a hospital procedural or
• 36:50
Speaker 1: I'm watching It's something wacky about it. There's something different
• 36:53
Speaker 1: about it, and I think that really helped with telling
• 36:56
Speaker 1: the story, you know, of JD and his group of
• 37:00
Speaker 1: friends in this hospital.
• 37:01
Speaker 2: Yeah, and Adam. I think Adam really set the tone
• 37:03
Speaker 2: for that, and I remember him and of course the
• 37:06
Speaker 2: next few that come up, you know, all all the
• 37:08
Speaker 2: directors in this in this first batch. I think Mark
• 37:11
Speaker 2: Bucklan's another one coming up that really helped set the
• 37:14
Speaker 2: style in the look. Some things were phased out as
• 37:17
Speaker 2: it said, the whip noises like yeah, when you go
• 37:20
Speaker 2: when you're moving your hands. Yeah, So there was a
• 37:23
Speaker 2: lot of sound effects obviously, but that whip thing is
• 37:25
Speaker 2: like one thing they toned down. This high school fantasy
• 37:27
Speaker 2: that starts at fifteen minutes or so is so funny,
• 37:30
Speaker 2: so well done, don't you think hilarious?
• 37:32
Speaker 1: Dude? The fact that they put the pimples on her
• 37:34
Speaker 1: and the braces and turn band stuff and then all
• 37:37
Speaker 1: of us being like the cool kids and stuff like that. Yeah,
• 37:41
Speaker 1: you know, Aloma is I guess really the only nurse
• 37:45
Speaker 1: from the pilot that made it all the way through,
• 37:48
Speaker 1: because there's people that surrounded Judy where I'm like, I
• 37:51
Speaker 1: don't recognize any of these people.
• 37:53
Speaker 2: I recognize a few. I recognize a couple of the women.
• 37:56
Speaker 2: By the way, none of the people who became like
• 37:58
Speaker 2: major background on people that we focused on are in
• 38:02
Speaker 2: any of these episodes. It'd be interesting when as we
• 38:04
Speaker 2: go to watch, it'll be in triest to see when
• 38:05
Speaker 2: we see their first appearances.
• 38:06
Speaker 1: Like, yeah, I saw one dude who was this bald
• 38:08
Speaker 1: guy and he kind of looks like Colonel doctor but
• 38:11
Speaker 1: he's a bald headed guy and he shows up in
• 38:13
Speaker 1: so many scenes like back to back to back to
• 38:15
  Speaker 1: back to back.
• 38:16
Speaker 2: Yeah, let's talk about how and Cox's apartment.
• 38:19
Speaker 1: That looks like a set, dude, No, it's so bad.
• 38:21
Speaker 1: First of all, looked like a set, dude.
• 38:23
Speaker 2: Not to dis cabot because I'm sure that at this
• 38:25
Speaker 2: time they were already out of money. But this is
• 38:28
Speaker 2: the only set so far that looks like they just
• 38:30
Speaker 2: put a couch into a hospital. Like there's so many
• 38:35
Speaker 2: things on the walls that are like, why is there
• 38:36
Speaker 2: a speaker on the side of his wall at his house?
• 38:39
Speaker 1: Not only that, why is that big window there that
• 38:42
  Speaker 1: goes nowhere?
• 38:44
Speaker 2: I know, it's so funny, and then we justify it
• 38:47
Speaker 2: by making a joke about like, oh, your apartment is
• 38:49
Speaker 2: so cold. But I was like, wow, man, they I
• 38:51
Speaker 2: think this is This was the first moment like where
• 38:54
Speaker 2: does he? Where does he live? But he live in
• 38:55
  Speaker 2: the hospital.
• 38:57
  Speaker 1: Crazy.
• 38:58
Speaker 2: I love this scene between me and Johnny and this
• 38:59
Speaker 2: is one of the one of his lines of scrubs.
• 39:01
Speaker 2: I remember, do you want to be the big spoon
• 39:02
Speaker 2: of the little spoon?
• 39:03
Speaker 1: I had no idea what spooning was. I knew that
• 39:05
Speaker 1: you could spoon, like I know what spooning was. But
• 39:08
Speaker 1: I didn't know that you could be there was a
• 39:10
Speaker 1: big spoon and a little spoon. I had no idea
• 39:12
Speaker 1: that that existed, and that kind of was like, oo
• 39:15
Speaker 1: little spoon. That whole scene is hilarious, you know what
• 39:19
Speaker 1: I mean, even though when he kicks you out and
• 39:21
Speaker 1: he gives you the lesson and he's like, now come here,
• 39:24
Speaker 1: let me give you a hug, and you're like, get
• 39:26
Speaker 1: the fuck out of here. He's like, come on, come on,
• 39:27
Speaker 1: come on, give me a hug, and you're like me
• 39:29
Speaker 1: and he's like, come on, give me a hug, and
• 39:31
Speaker 1: you go for the hugg. It's like get out of here.
• 39:33
Speaker 2: Yeah, very funny. He's so good and really just so good.
• 39:36
Speaker 2: I really just liked that scene between the two of us.
• 39:38
Speaker 2: It really kind of showed the dance with Johnny see
• 39:41
Speaker 2: where it was going to be like, you know, fucking
• 39:43
Speaker 2: with me a ton and really but then eventually there'd
• 39:46
Speaker 2: always be a lesson underneath it, and he'd always drop
• 39:49
Speaker 2: in and be a good mentor. I mean, that's when
• 39:51
Speaker 2: this is called my mentor. So he's doesn't want me
• 39:54
Speaker 2: to a mentor, doesn't mean a mentor, And in the
• 39:55
Speaker 2: end he finally drops some knowledge, like you can't save
• 39:58
Speaker 2: these people. All you can do is do your You're
• 40:00
Speaker 2: not responsible for changing people's habits. You can't make someone
• 40:03
Speaker 2: who's gonna smoke not smoke. And I know that this
• 40:06
Speaker 2: is something and that doctors must deal with all the time.
• 40:09
Speaker 2: They wish they could make their patients stop eating that
• 40:12
Speaker 2: fast food, they wish they could make their patients stop smoking,
• 40:14
Speaker 2: whatever it is. Johnny's trying to teach JD early on,
• 40:17
Speaker 2: like you don't have control over over that. You can
• 40:19
Speaker 2: only do what you can do.
• 40:21
Speaker 1: I had made a note on that. Also, when doctors
• 40:24
Speaker 1: come into the hospital for the first few months, maybe
• 40:28
Speaker 1: even more than that, they take everything so personal. And
• 40:34
Speaker 1: that's great to have that type of attitude, but if
• 40:38
Speaker 1: you continue that type of attitude, it's going to be
• 40:42
Speaker 1: really hard for you to make it as a doctor,
• 40:44
Speaker 1: you know what I mean. And that's what JD had
• 40:49
Speaker 1: to experience, you know what I mean. JD cared so
• 40:52
Speaker 1: much about Will and you know, and Will quitting his
• 40:57
Speaker 1: cigarette addiction, and he thought that that was a bonding
• 41:01
Speaker 1: experience between him and doctor Cox. You know, dude, I
• 41:03
Speaker 1: know you're thinking about it, and let's talk it over
• 41:06
Speaker 1: so we can come back in tomorrow with a game
• 41:08
Speaker 1: plan and stop this dude from smoking cigarettes. And at
• 41:12
Speaker 1: the end of the day, that wasn't your job. Your
• 41:16
Speaker 1: job is to test and treat, you know what I mean.
• 41:19
Speaker 1: That was JD's job. Let's test him and see what
• 41:23
Speaker 1: ailments he has, and any ailment we find, we're gonna
• 41:27
Speaker 1: treat and try and save him from all of this
• 41:31
Speaker 1: extracurricular activity of you giving a crap about you know,
• 41:35
Speaker 1: how he got here. That's not in the cards because
• 41:38
Speaker 1: at the end of the day, if this person does
• 41:40
Speaker 1: pass away, how do you develop the strength to get
• 41:44
Speaker 1: up again? If you were so so invested in this
• 41:48
Speaker 1: person's well being. And as much as that sucks to hear,
• 41:53
Speaker 1: that's how doctors have to be. That's how nurses have
• 41:56
Speaker 1: to be. They're gonna deal with death, they're gonna deal
• 41:58
Speaker 1: with life, they're gonna deal with disease, They're going to
• 42:01
Speaker 1: deal with all of these things. And how do you
• 42:04
Speaker 1: put up a shield so at the end of the day,
• 42:08
Speaker 1: if you do lose somebody, you can come back the
• 42:10
Speaker 1: next day and do your job. Yeah, you know what
• 42:13
Speaker 1: I mean, And that was what Cox was trying to
• 42:16
  Speaker 1: prepare j D for.
• 42:17
Speaker 2: Yeah, early on early on in the show, because like
• 42:19
Speaker 2: he's like, you need to get used to this. This
• 42:22
Speaker 2: is not You're not going to be able to save
• 42:23
Speaker 2: every single person and change all their habits. By the way,
• 42:26
Speaker 2: I'm looking at the credits and I see that John
• 42:28
Speaker 2: Doosey's who was the guest star as Will His character's
• 42:30
Speaker 2: name Will Forte. And was there some connection to Will Forte?
• 42:35
Speaker 2: Did someone It wasn't one of our writers was partnered
• 42:38
  Speaker 2: with Will Forte.
• 42:39
Speaker 1: I do believe you're right. I was in Schwartz Schwartz
• 42:42
Speaker 1: with Schwartz. Yeah, speaking of Mike schwartz Zach. The show
• 42:45
Speaker 1: that I'm that I shot all last year, Emergence, which
• 42:49
Speaker 1: is on ABC, which is another Disney show. The creators
• 42:53
Speaker 1: of that show wrote on ED back in the day
• 42:56
Speaker 1: with a young Mike Schwartz.
• 42:58
Speaker 2: Oh really, that's that must be where Bill Off found him. Maybe,
• 43:01
Speaker 2: Oh yeah, ED came first because I remember when the
• 43:02
Speaker 2: show ED was on and Tom Cavanaugh's picture went up
• 43:06
Speaker 2: on billboards and I still didn't have a job. My
• 43:09
Speaker 2: mom would call me and be like, there is a
• 43:12
Speaker 2: show where this guy looks exactly like you and and
• 43:17
Speaker 2: he's on billboards everywhere. And I remember thinking like, great, yeah,
• 43:21
Speaker 2: that's not me, mom.
• 43:22
Speaker 1: It's kind of it's kind of crazy how he came
• 43:24
Speaker 1: on to be a brother later on. I know, I
• 43:28
Speaker 1: wish they I wish they would have had I wish
• 43:29
Speaker 1: you would have had two brothers. I wish it would
• 43:31
Speaker 1: have been him and then Dak Shepherd as your other brother.
• 43:34
  Speaker 2: I know, I get this thing. I don't know what
• 43:36
Speaker 2: it is about my face, but people tell me I
• 43:39
Speaker 2: look like so many different people. Obviously Dak Shepherd's the
• 43:43
Speaker 2: most common these days, but I used to get Tom
• 43:46
Speaker 2: Cavanaugh and Ray Romano.
• 43:48
Speaker 1: Yeah I remember Ray Romano.
• 43:50
Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, I Finally early on when our show launched,
• 43:53
Speaker 2: everyone was saying that I was like young Ray Romano.
• 43:56
Speaker 2: And I remember I met Ray Romano like on a
• 43:58
Speaker 2: press line somewhere, and he looked at me and he
• 44:01
Speaker 2: was like, oh, it's like looking in a mirror. I
• 44:05
Speaker 2: couldn't remember if he was finding the comparison. The funny.
• 44:18
Speaker 1: Can you tell the story about how when we went
• 44:20
Speaker 1: to Vegas and I was in the bathroom and I
• 44:23
Speaker 1: was washing my hands, and I left and the guy goes, oh,
• 44:26
Speaker 1: you know who that was, right? Do you remember the story.
• 44:28
Speaker 2: Unfortunately, I remember the story but I forgot the punchline,
• 44:31
Speaker 2: so you're gonna have to tell it.
• 44:32
Speaker 1: So we're in Vegas and we're hanging out. It's us,
• 44:35
Speaker 1: Josh Rayden, our buddy, Carrie Brothers, and Michael Weston, who
• 44:40
Speaker 1: also at some point was on the show.
• 44:43
Speaker 2: Yeah, came by the show as private dancer.
• 44:45
Speaker 1: Right, right, But Carrie and Josh both had music on
• 44:49
Speaker 1: the show, if I remember correctly, right, yes, right, So
• 44:52
Speaker 1: we're all in Vegas. We go to Vegas. It's our
• 44:54
Speaker 1: first time going to Vegas to as a group, and
• 44:58
  Speaker 1: we're you know, we're very young, and we've we've got
• 45:00
Speaker 1: a little bit of money at this point to spend
• 45:03
Speaker 1: in Vegas. We had a really good time. We stayed
• 45:05
Speaker 1: at the MGM Grand they hooked it up for us.
• 45:07
Speaker 2: The story, as I even correct is I was in
• 45:09
Speaker 2: the bathroom. Donald in the bathroom and Donald washed his
• 45:11
Speaker 2: hands and then he left and the person that was
• 45:13
Speaker 2: in there said to his friend, you know who that was?
• 45:16
Speaker 2: And in my mind I'm thinking, like, oh, Donald getting recognized,
• 45:19
Speaker 2: And the guy goes who and he goes, that was Erkele.
• 45:23
Speaker 2: That was fucking Erkle, dude, And they were like freaking
• 45:27
Speaker 2: out that Erkele had been in the bathroom with him.
• 45:29
Speaker 1: I love that. What about looking to this day? I,
• 45:32
Speaker 1: you know, to this day. Anytime I could be mentioned
• 45:35
Speaker 1: in the same story as Jalio White, Tay Diggs, all
• 45:39
Speaker 1: these people who were like, you know, iconic for being
• 45:43
Speaker 1: really good at playing a character. You know, Julia went
• 45:47
Speaker 1: on to do Stepan Erkele, which was really freaking awesome
• 45:50
Speaker 1: and it showed his range as an actor and everything
• 45:53
Speaker 1: like that, anytime I could be mentioned in the same story,
• 45:55
Speaker 1: like one time quest Love hit me up, it was like, Yo,
• 45:57
Speaker 1: somebody said I look like you. Was like, that's the
• 46:00
Speaker 1: best day ever, dude.
• 46:01
Speaker 2: I remember when we first became friends and we'd go
• 46:04
Speaker 2: out and about no one knew who I was at all,
• 46:06
Speaker 2: but some people would would know Donald's name. But a
• 46:09
Speaker 2: lot of people would just be like, yo, yo clueless, clueless.
• 46:12
Speaker 2: They would just yell clueless at you right all the time.
• 46:16
Speaker 1: YO clueless, clueless, Yo clueless, And then they'd point to
• 46:20
Speaker 1: you and be like, YO, clueless boy, his friend, Yo
• 46:22
  Speaker 1: clueless boy.
• 46:23
Speaker 2: His friend look at clueless his friend that's clueless and
• 46:26
  Speaker 2: clueless his friend.
• 46:27
Speaker 1: That story has a horrible ending, though, man, it's a
• 46:30
Speaker 1: horrible well. The ending is you know, you did Garden
• 46:33
Speaker 1: State and all of a sudden you became Zach Braff
• 46:34
Speaker 1: and people were like, oh shit, Zach Braf, and look
• 46:37
Speaker 1: who he's hanging out with. He's got clueless with him.
• 46:40
Speaker 2: That's not what happened.
• 46:42
Speaker 1: That is what happened.
• 46:43
Speaker 2: That's funny. I just remember, you know, it's funny the
• 46:46
Speaker 2: thing the things that people yell at you on the street,
• 46:48
Speaker 2: like you don't get clueless anymore, I'm sure, but I know.
• 46:51
Speaker 1: But I get a lot of black scrub thanks the
• 46:52
Speaker 1: family guy. I get a lot of black scrubs and
• 46:55
  Speaker 1: get scrubs and.
• 46:57
Speaker 2: You know, yeah, I got I get where's all the time. Yeah,
• 47:00
Speaker 2: Sometimes people will know my name and they just talk
• 47:02
Speaker 2: to me right away, and I can't figure out if
• 47:05
Speaker 2: I know them in real life or they just know
• 47:08
Speaker 2: me as an actor. And especially when I'm in New
• 47:10
Speaker 2: York because I lived there part of the year, and
• 47:13
Speaker 2: people just walking down the street just start talking to you.
• 47:16
Speaker 2: And you don't want to be I don't want to
• 47:17
Speaker 2: be rude at all, but I'm trying to think, like,
• 47:19
Speaker 2: do I know this person or do they just know
• 47:21
Speaker 2: my name. One time I was parallel parking in Manhattan
• 47:24
Speaker 2: and it was going horribly and some guy walks by.
• 47:27
Speaker 2: He's like, you're killing it, BRAF, and I just couldn't remember. Like,
• 47:34
  Speaker 2: I just was like, do I know that? I don't
• 47:35
Speaker 2: think I know that person. They just give me shit.
• 47:38
Speaker 1: That happened to me recently at Starbucks before this whole
• 47:40
Speaker 1: quarantine thing happened. I was at Starbucks and a guy
• 47:43
Speaker 1: comes up to me and goes, Donald, how you been man.
• 47:45
Speaker 1: I'm like, hey, man, how's it going. He's like, you know,
• 47:48
  Speaker 1: I'm good. And then I realized, oh, I don't know
• 47:50
Speaker 1: this guy. I was like, wait, how do we know
• 47:51
Speaker 1: each other? And he says, oh, dude, I'm just such
• 47:54
Speaker 1: a huge fan of yours. And I remember thinking, holy cow,
• 47:57
Speaker 1: that's how you get caught out there. Dude. From here
• 47:59
Speaker 1: on out, if somebody says to me, Donald, how's it
• 48:02
Speaker 1: going and I don't know who they are, I'm not
• 48:04
Speaker 1: gonna be embarrassed anymore, because there's that moment of embarrassment
• 48:08
  Speaker 1: where you're like.
• 48:08
Speaker 2: Wait, I don't want to don't want to.
• 48:12
Speaker 1: Want hurt, hurt anybody's feelings. Oh.
• 48:15
Speaker 2: I thought of another person that I used to really
• 48:17
Speaker 2: get a lot before. Was Anne Hathaway's boyfriend that went
• 48:21
Speaker 2: to jail. Do you remember that guy?
• 48:23
  Speaker 1: I don't.
• 48:24
Speaker 2: He was involved in some I think it was business
• 48:26
Speaker 2: or money crime something, but he went to jail. And
• 48:29
Speaker 2: I walk in. This is years ago. I walk into
• 48:31
Speaker 2: a coffee bean and I walk in and I see
• 48:34
Speaker 2: our senial hall and he's looking right at me, and
• 48:36
  Speaker 2: I don't think. I don't ever met our senial hall,
• 48:39
Speaker 2: and but I was kind of geeked out because I
• 48:40
Speaker 2: loved arsenial Hall and he kind of smiled at me.
• 48:43
Speaker 2: He brought me over to the end of the counter
• 48:45
Speaker 2: where they delivered the coffees, and there you can hear
• 48:48
Speaker 2: the music. Oh is Eddie Murphy standing there? And I'm
• 48:52
Speaker 2: like having one of the greatest moments of my life.
• 48:54
Speaker 2: And now when I meet famous people, I can normally
• 48:56
  Speaker 2: hold it together.
• 48:57
Speaker 1: Yeah, I'm gonna keep it on. I remember saying to
• 48:59
Speaker 1: you one time, dude, how do you do this? Man? Like,
• 49:02
Speaker 1: that's freaking Benjamin Bratt right there, and you're not even
• 49:04
Speaker 1: geeking out, really, You're just like it's not even a
• 49:07
  Speaker 1: and You're like, I don't, I don't, I don't geek out.
• 49:09
Speaker 2: Well, I can hold it together sometimes, but when I
• 49:11
Speaker 2: met Eddie Murphy. I mean, I just started gushing. I
• 49:14
Speaker 2: was like, Eddie, I'm so sorry, but I just want
• 49:15
Speaker 2: to say that, like you were like such an inspiration
• 49:18
Speaker 2: to me, and and and and and Beverly Hills cop
• 49:20
Speaker 2: I gotta tell you it's I use it as an
• 49:22
Speaker 2: example all the time because like, the bad guys were
• 49:25
Speaker 2: like legitimately scary. But he goes, he goes, who that
• 49:28
Speaker 2: bad guys weren't scary? Who Victim Maitland? And I was like,
• 49:32
Speaker 2: oh my god, Eddie Murphy just said Victor Maitland to
• 49:34
Speaker 2: me in a coffee shop. My life is peaked right now.
• 49:37
Speaker 2: He's like Victim Maitland and I'm like, no, not like
• 49:39
Speaker 2: Victor Maitland. Like, well, I was like the Henchman. He goes, yeah,
• 49:42
Speaker 2: well the Henchman was scary. And then he interrupts me
• 49:44
Speaker 2: and he goes stares at me, and he goes, anybody
• 49:46
Speaker 2: ever tell you look like Anne Hathaway's boyfriend that went
• 49:48
Speaker 2: to jail? And I said what. He goes yeah, because
• 49:54
Speaker 2: I was watching the news and I was like, that
• 49:57
Speaker 2: looks like the dude from Scrubs. And I thought, this
• 50:03
Speaker 2: is the most surreal moment of my entire life. Eddie
• 50:06
Speaker 2: Murphy is telling recognize. A he knows who I am because
• 50:09
Speaker 2: he knows what scrubs is. And B he's trying to
• 50:12
Speaker 2: figure out if I've been told before that I look
• 50:14
Speaker 2: like Ann Hathaway's boyfriend.
• 50:15
  Speaker 1: That is hilarious.
• 50:16
Speaker 2: By the way, the last part of that story, I
• 50:17
Speaker 2: gotta tell you because it's so funny. I go to
• 50:19
Speaker 2: the Lama's Rob premiere, the movie premiere, and because I
• 50:22
Speaker 2: love Lama's Rob, as you know, and.
• 50:25
Speaker 1: Drink with me two days gone barre.
• 50:29
Speaker 2: All right, So, by the way, we'll do a special
• 50:32
Speaker 2: episode of this podcast where we just sing. Anyway, I'm
• 50:36
Speaker 2: walking and I know Anne Hathaway as an acquaintance, and
• 50:40
Speaker 2: and this is right around when all that shit went
• 50:42
Speaker 2: down with her boyfriend, and I'm walking towards her to
• 50:45
Speaker 2: say congratulations, and her father stands up and like gives
• 50:51
Speaker 2: me this look like I'm gonna kill this mother fucker.
• 50:55
Speaker 2: He's got the balls to crash my daughter's mirror. I'm
• 51:01
Speaker 2: gonna strangle him. And I got within ten feet of
• 51:05
Speaker 2: the dude and then his face just fucking broke and
• 51:08
Speaker 2: he went like sided breath relief and realized that it
• 51:11
Speaker 2: was me not the ex boyfriend.
• 51:13
Speaker 1: Oh man, Now you know what black people go through
• 51:15
  Speaker 1: all the time.
• 51:19
Speaker 2: All right, I think we have a caller, right, Joelle.
• 51:22
  Speaker 1: We do.
• 51:22
  Speaker 4: Welcome Kayla.
• 51:24
Speaker 2: Thanks for being here.
• 51:25
  Speaker 1: What's up? Kayla?
• 51:26
  Speaker 2: Hi? Kayla?
• 51:27
  Speaker 1: He yo?
• 51:28
Speaker 2: Hi? How are you?
• 51:31
Speaker 4: I'm good. They're crazy but good.
• 51:34
Speaker 1: I hear yeah, we hear you. It's crazy times.
• 51:36
Speaker 2: Thank you so much for being our second ever caller.
• 51:39
Speaker 2: We're very very excited to have you. We can answer
• 51:42
Speaker 2: any question you have about anything, well almost any question,
• 51:45
Speaker 2: but mostly Scrubs related. That's about it.
• 51:47
Speaker 4: That's fair, Okay. I guess like my first question would
• 51:51
Speaker 4: be a lot of shows that premiered at that time
• 51:54
Speaker 4: had that awkward first season, but for whatever reason for
• 51:59
Speaker 4: me a viewer, Scrubs didn't have that. Was that something
• 52:03
Speaker 4: that you guys all felt as a cast?
• 52:05
Speaker 1: Uh? Speaking for I was just happy to be on
• 52:08
Speaker 1: television when I look back at it now. Absolutely, you're
• 52:12
Speaker 1: absolutely right. Scrubs started off at a high point and
• 52:15
Speaker 1: it just kept going up from there as far as
• 52:18
Speaker 1: storytelling goes. And that's really you know, you got to
• 52:21
Speaker 1: give props to Bill Lawrence and his team of writers. Also,
• 52:25
Speaker 1: you know, the crew and you know how they were
• 52:28
Speaker 1: in line and just ready to go once we started.
• 52:30
Speaker 2: With so many shows. I agree, Kayla, you go. You
• 52:33
Speaker 2: can't help but go. Especially with pilots. I'm always saying
• 52:37
Speaker 2: to friends and when you know, when you recommend a show,
• 52:39
Speaker 2: you're like, give it like three episodes because you know
• 52:42
Speaker 2: the pilot's good and everything. But you know there's because
• 52:44
Speaker 2: the pilots are so hard. You have to introduce so much,
• 52:47
Speaker 2: so many characters, and the tone and the style and
• 52:50
Speaker 2: the it's so hard to do a pilot have it worked.
• 52:52
Speaker 2: So I guess you guys have said this to people too.
• 52:54
Speaker 2: You're always like, just give you a couple episodes, Whereas
• 52:56
Speaker 2: I agree, Build builded such an amazing job with the
• 52:59
Speaker 2: pilot and the first few episodes that he was able
• 53:02
Speaker 2: to in twenty three minutes an episode, be able to
• 53:04
Speaker 2: just launch it. I'm just looking at the my screen.
• 53:06
Speaker 2: This one was like twenty one minutes or so. It's
• 53:09
Speaker 2: just amazing how much got crammed in and beautifully woven together.
• 53:13
Speaker 1: You know, being on the show. I hate to brag
• 53:15
Speaker 1: about the show, but I think that's what made the
• 53:16
Speaker 1: show so great, you know what I mean. It's like,
• 53:19
Speaker 1: you know, you didn't have to say give it two
• 53:21
Speaker 1: or three episodes. By the third episode, though, we were
• 53:24
Speaker 1: really on fire. You know, we were really telling great stories.
• 53:27
Speaker 1: But we were telling great stories before that. It just,
• 53:31
Speaker 1: you know, it just elevated even higher after episode three
• 53:34
Speaker 1: because we found our groove.
• 53:36
Speaker 4: I love that because I remember my mom asked me,
• 53:37
Speaker 4: I probably feel like I need to start something, and
• 53:40
Speaker 4: I said, you should start Scrubbs from the beginning, because
• 53:43
Speaker 4: I know you came in at this some pieces. She's like, see,
• 53:45
Speaker 4: you don't have an episode for me to start, and
• 53:46
Speaker 4: I said, no, you start from episode one.
• 53:48
Speaker 1: I love that. That's so awesome.
• 53:50
Speaker 2: That's great, Kayla. Do you have another question? Just because
• 53:53
Speaker 2: we're all in isolation and have nothing to do but
• 53:54
Speaker 2: to talk to you.
• 53:56
Speaker 4: Sure, so, I guess what's so great? Which is funny?
• 54:00
Speaker 4: You say episode three? Episode two is probably my favorite
• 54:04
Speaker 4: because so many of the show's major relationships are established
• 54:08
Speaker 4: in that episode. So was that chemistry instantaneous or did
• 54:12
Speaker 4: that come from filming episodes over the coming week.
• 54:15
Speaker 1: You know what's crazy is that that's how we opened the
• 54:17
Speaker 1: show today. Pretty much. We talked about how episode two
• 54:22
Speaker 1: it really sets off the journey that a lot of
• 54:25
Speaker 1: these characters are going to have together, Carla and Turk,
• 54:28
Speaker 1: Carla and Elliott, everybody in the hospital and doctor kelso
• 54:33
Speaker 1: Jd and Cox. All of these stories are really starting
• 54:38
Speaker 1: to bubble at this point, you know what I mean,
• 54:40
Speaker 1: or starting to you know, gurgle, Yeah, gurgle whatever, Sure,
• 54:46
  Speaker 1: I don't. I don't know if we should use gurgle.
• 54:48
Speaker 2: No, Like you know, when like a boiling water starts
• 54:50
Speaker 2: to come to a gurgle. Isn't that the word?
• 54:52
Speaker 1: No, it's not. That's not what gurgle means.
• 54:55
Speaker 2: Thinking of gargle, not gurgling. Gurgle are different. I just
• 54:58
Speaker 2: like saying gurgle. Another big thing was that we all
• 55:02
Speaker 2: genuinely got along. Like you know, a lot of shows,
• 55:05
Speaker 2: you're meeting all these new people. Just like any job,
• 55:06
Speaker 2: there's any people you don't like, there's many people that
• 55:08
Speaker 2: you do like. We all really clicked, like you know,
• 55:12
Speaker 2: and I'm sure Donald and I have both been on
• 55:14
Speaker 2: project since then where the magic wasn't there. This was
• 55:18
Speaker 2: a project where like all those people we were and
• 55:20
Speaker 2: the writers and Bill and the directors, the crew, we
• 55:23
Speaker 2: were all friends and we were all hanging out. We
• 55:26
Speaker 2: would all go out together. We just really genuinely loved
• 55:29
Speaker 2: each other and a testament to the seven main characters
• 55:32
Speaker 2: in the show. We all, you know, over nine years.
• 55:35
Speaker 2: We had our moments. Of course, just like a family,
• 55:37
Speaker 2: you'd get in arguments over things. But but for ninety
• 55:40
Speaker 2: nine percent of the time, we all got along really, really,
• 55:42
Speaker 2: really well. And I think that that shows in the
• 55:45
Speaker 2: relationships in the show. Because we loved each other, we
• 55:48
Speaker 2: rooted for each other. If Donald had a moment where
• 55:51
Speaker 2: he was killing it, like we weren't trying to upstage
• 55:53
Speaker 2: each other. We were like, go, man, go be that,
• 55:55
Speaker 2: you're killing it right now, like we were rooting each
• 55:57
Speaker 2: other on you know.
• 55:58
Speaker 1: Yeah, we definitely for each other's biggest fans at the
• 56:02
  Speaker 1: time for sure.
• 56:03
Speaker 2: Well, thank you, Kayla, thank you for calling in, and
• 56:05
Speaker 2: thank you for for being our second ever caller.

• 56:14

• 56:16

• 57:25
Speaker 1: don't be that. You know what?

Speaker 2: I like the Taylor Swift lyric, and I'm just like,
• 57:28
Speaker 2: damn it's seven to eighty am. When she's talking about
• 57:32
Speaker 2: getting trolled early in the morning.
• 57:34
Speaker 1: I like, got a long list of ex lovers. That's
• 57:37
Speaker 1: that's my favorite sing That might be my favorite, not
• 57:41
Speaker 1: that that has anything to do with this show, but
• 57:43
Speaker 1: that might be my favorite song.
• 57:44
Speaker 2: All right, listen, you know what my favorite song is? Donald?
• 57:46
Speaker 1: That she sings, that she sings.
• 57:48
Speaker 2: You know what my favorite song is Donald, And I
• 57:50
Speaker 2: think we should go into it right now. It's our

Speaker 2: theme song that we should say. We want to thank
• 57:54
Speaker 2: you to Charlie Pooth who wrote the music and Donald
• 57:57
Speaker 2: and I wrote the lyrics, and I think now is
• 57:59
Speaker 2: a better time than ever to start singing it. So
• 58:02
Speaker 2: thank you for listening. Thank you to all the medical
