Latest / HEAVY Music Interviews / Musical Deception With SIANA DAVIS From KRAVE
Transcript
- 0:00My name's Siana and I'm from the band Crave. I sing and play bass,
- 0:05and we've got a brand new single coming out called Charade. It is
- 0:09such an epic one. It's a new kind of sound for Crave. It
- 0:14explores lots of deep topics within the music itself, and we really are like
- 0:20amazed with the production of this song. We think we've kind of hit a
- 0:24whole new level as a band. So that's my plug for that one.
- 0:27Man, Wow, you've got me excited. That's fantastic. Thanks for joining
- 0:32us. Yeah, thank you so much for having me. Chris, Oh,
- 0:35absolute pleasure. So, as you mentioned, Crave our premier and your
- 0:38new single Charade through Heavy this Thursday, May twenty third at five pm,
- 0:42which is going to be your first new music in over eighteen months. So
- 0:46how are you feeling about it. It's a a bit of pressure. It
- 0:49is quite nervous getting back out there. You know. We've been playing so
- 0:52many shows last year and we just have been so busy and we're like,
- 0:56man, we really got to release a new music scene and everyone's like,
- 0:59when's it coming, and we're like, we're writing it. It's getting there.
- 1:03Excellent, So tell us a bit more about the song charade from a
- 1:06musical point of view and what you're going for with it. Yeah, absolutely,
- 1:08So what we were going for is something that I feel like resonates with
- 1:14a lot of people. We focused mostly kind of on a lyrically based written
- 1:19song, So the song itself is just cover so many topics about being a
- 1:23human and just living in our society that's really you know, I can get
- 1:26really crazy, and the song explores mental health, explores like masking and really
- 1:34deep stuff, like to the point where people just lose themselves pretending to be
- 1:38someone they're not playing a character that's just like not them. It's it's just
- 1:45really highlighting the fact that we need to look out for each other and we
- 1:51need to be a bit more unconditional with each other. So with that in
- 1:53mind, we created kind of quite an emotionally heavy song around the lyrics and
- 1:59the so that's something a little bit different. It's very hooky, but it's
- 2:04slightly variant of our sort of riff catalog we have. We've got other RIFFI
- 2:09songs coming too, but it's just something kind of reminiscent to take you about
- 2:14a little bit. So we're coming out strong Ah. It actually raise a
- 2:17good point there, Siada, Like you guys, you have never had songs
- 2:23weil just star away trashy, popcorn lyrics, Like there's always something a bit
- 2:27deeper with your songs. How much time do you spend in the writing process
- 2:30and then fleshing out these ideas? Yeah, it can be really varied.
- 2:37I have to tell you what, Like, Charade was actually written in thirty
- 2:39minutes, and it was I think the reason it was written in thirty minutes
- 2:45was because I guess when I write lyrics, I I'm already sitting in quite
- 2:50a deep emotion and for me, it's just like channeling and journaling whatever I'm
- 2:54feeling in that moment and pushing it into lyrics, into symbology and metal flaws.
- 3:00And sometimes it comes out straight away and I get shocked. I'm like,
- 3:05wow, I just wrote a song then, and that didn't take like
- 3:07any time at all. And then there's other times where I'll flash out something
- 3:12for like a day, and I'll leave it for a week, come back
- 3:15and look at the lyrics and be like, mah, I might change some
- 3:19things. But yeah, Charade was just one of those ones that just came
- 3:22out and I was like that sounds good. I feel good with that.
- 3:24Yeah, bloody show off. The music video is pretty epic as well,
- 3:31Like it starts off with you having a big cheesy grin on your face and
- 3:36being fussed over, but it gets pretty dark really quick. So in the
- 3:40film clip, what's going on in the film clip? Yeah, So it's
- 3:46resemblance of a character at start being just faking and masking and trying to be
- 3:55perfect in everything they do. There's so many needs around and they just get
- 4:00to that point. We might have all been at that point once, you
- 4:03know, because we're humans, we get so burnt out sometimes if we don't
- 4:09put out boundaries. And this really really symbolizes, especially at start, the
- 4:15boundary crossing and just like that consistent lying to yourself and lying to the people
- 4:19around you that you do and find and that yeah I can I can handle
- 4:23this, and I can take on this and this and this and it just
- 4:27gets too much. And basically the music video it just like warps into this
- 4:31really dark element, like this great juxtaposition from this masking, happy, perfect
- 4:40person on the outside and then their internal world absolutely crumbling around them. And
- 4:46then the reality is that internal world starts to come visible on the external out
- 4:54towards everyone that they know, and they start falling apart, and it just
- 4:58basically shows that we can't hold a mask forever because we could get really toxic,
- 5:01and it just it was amazing to be in the video and direct that
- 5:10video and to have such a great team around to make that vision come to
- 5:13life. It was definitely one of the best videos I think we've done so
- 5:16far. And like we diy things still, we'd love to one day work
- 5:21with like you know, continue to enhance our performances and connects more with the
- 5:27creative team, but we're really happy with what we've done, you know,
- 5:30just the three of us a couple. Yeah, exactly. Yeah, you
- 5:34sort of touched on this before, but I watched elaborate a bit for us,
- 5:38Like the project says that that the band has elevated their sound to a
- 5:42whole new level on charade, Like he's sort of you mentioned it briefly before,
- 5:46but in what ways? Yeah, So, I feel like specifically with
- 5:50this song, we've really digged into a lot of producing and production side that
- 5:57we haven't done before with previous songs, really figured out like nuanced atmosphere and
- 6:03putting in a lot more emotions with different instruments, So we've got like things
- 6:09such as like very quiet sort of like since strings and a little bit of
- 6:14ambience, and man, it fills out this song so much. It gives
- 6:18it this beautiful depth that I feel like we haven't captured in our other songs
- 6:25like we could have, but we were just you know, starting out,
- 6:27and we were very new to this this music game. So I think that's
- 6:31what's kind of enhanced up a lot. And the vocals are really like,
- 6:36you know, pretty good. I say, like, we're very happy with
- 6:41the range of it. And we've introduced seven string guitar as well. It
- 6:46sounds so it's getting heavier a little bit. So, as we said before,
- 6:56like eight months since your last song came out, So what's changed with
- 7:00Crave as a band in that time from the last single of this one?
- 7:04Yeah, I feel like in the past eighteen months we've been I guess,
- 7:08really refining who we are as people and actually what we would like to do
- 7:14with our art. We've had time to reflect on how we want to present
- 7:18ourselves out to our fan base and actually like who we really want to capture
- 7:26with our music. I feel like we just put it out there because we're
- 7:29like, anyone can listen to this, and you know, we still feel
- 7:31similar. But yeah, through this eighteen months playing to different audiences and really
- 7:38figuring out from other bands we've played with, like the big Supports, we've
- 7:44done what we want and who we are as a band a lot more where
- 7:49we've realized we can absolutely, I guess, brand ourselves a lot more towards
- 7:55I guess a bit more of the depth of our music, and I think
- 7:57we're sort of changing with sort of we're still like resemblance of like I guess,
- 8:03some of the music that was produced, you know, quite a few
- 8:05years ago, but we're trying to sort of modernize our image a bit more
- 8:09and present a bit more to like a younger audience as well as an older
- 8:13audience. So I think a lot of that's changed, and we've really defined
- 8:20into you know, mental health based kind of music and music for anyone that's
- 8:28that's struggling or can relate to a lot of the lyrics and the emotional heaviness
- 8:33of our catalog now these days. So I feel like that's what's happened.
- 8:41It just took us a while to figure figure out what we really wanted,
- 8:46and we appreciate being unique in the sense that every song doesn't sound exactly the
- 8:50same. But I think we've definitely sound where we sit now a lot more.
- 8:56Yeah, damn straight Now, the big question is is Charade a standalone
- 9:01single or is it part of a bigger album or EP. Picture. Yeah,
- 9:05it's actually a part of something a bit bigger. We are. We
- 9:09haven't enough tracks for a new EP. It's pretty exciting. It's definitely gonna
- 9:16launch us back out into the industry a lot more, and I think hopefully
- 9:22we're hoping that we'll wow the audience a bit more with the quality we have,
- 9:26and hopefully from this EP, we'd really like to push into releasing albums
- 9:31quite soon after that. Like we're already in the process of writing new music
- 9:35for even like a different catalog. So yeah, I'm definitely pushing ourselves a
- 9:41lot more. Man, very good. We've spoke about Charade being a little
- 9:45bit heavier and like a bit of a step up for you guys in terms
- 9:48of music, So is it the other stuff you're writing, Is it further
- 9:50in that direction or is it a bit different against Still Yeah, absolutely,
- 9:56I feel like then we're kind of gradually getting heavier, but almost sort of
- 10:03a bit more like commercially heavier. We're modernizing a little bit with our sound,
- 10:09and like, I've also learned how to do a lot more screaming,
- 10:15so that's coming into the picture a bit more, which I think a lot
- 10:20of people have shared they're excited about. But also, yeah, capturing really
- 10:26just earworm songs, finding like some melodic earworm and putting that into our music
- 10:33heeps more is something that we're offering out and that's something I think people can
- 10:37look forward to. So we, yeah, we consider a bit more like
- 10:43in the front of people's minds and that's really where we want to be.
- 10:46So yeah, right, you mentioned you touring before, Like you guys have
- 10:52done a lot of touring of late, So have you actually like noticed and
- 10:56make a difference, Like can you see that the sole for the band is
- 10:58getting bigger more you sort of get out there and do stuff. Yeah.
- 11:01Absolutely, Like we've had a massive audience increase to come watch our live show,
- 11:07and we've had so much practice at figuring out what we want to give
- 11:13people and also having the opportunity to have played quite a lot of shows,
- 11:16which is quite old school of us. You know, we'd love playing to
- 11:20people and connecting on a live basis, and from that, people have shared
- 11:26what they really enjoy about us, and we've gotten so much feedback and we've
- 11:31been like, right, yeah, cool. So we've refined our engagement and
- 11:35how we entice people into our community and also entice people into listening to our
- 11:43music and really feeling it. And that's it's made such a big difference.
- 11:48Like we've just learned how to move on stage. We're very cohesive now,
- 11:54I've learned how to engage singing while playing bass and trying to people into the
- 12:01audience. There's been a lot more commanding going on. And yeah, our
- 12:05audience growth, it's just people. Yeah, we've seen a lot of people
- 12:09come. Like I think we've tripled in size with the audiences that now come
- 12:13and see us. And especially after playing the two big supports we played Avatars
- 12:20and Suicidal Suicidal Tendencies last year, and that's just like that's been a really
- 12:24big thing for us. And we've had a lot of people return to see
- 12:28us after playing the shows with them. So yeah, we're very grateful.
- 12:33And on the subject of live shows, what have you got coming up you've
- 12:37got to have something to cover it up. Yeah, we do. Yeah,
- 12:39it's been killing us not playing for a little while. We're like,
- 12:43so we're kind of trying to I guess our thing is being a little bit
- 12:46more scarce and just you know and building up as much anticipation as possible for
- 12:54our relaunching of music and kind of coming back with quite a big bang.
- 12:58And we've got we've got a show coming up June first at liz Moore.
- 13:03It's really exciting. This is where our drama grew up and it's really cool
- 13:07played. It's interesting. We've played a couple of regional shows where and we
- 13:13always can't say no to the ones where the towns are places we've grown up.
- 13:18So we've played in Gimpi and that's where Ryan's grown up, our guitarist,
- 13:22And we've played shows in Sydney in the Southern Highlands and that's where I
- 13:24grew up. And so we've now had the opportunity to play like, oh,
- 13:30can crave play liz Moore and we're like, yes, you know,
- 13:33it's kind of cool, and it's like, this is where Lockie grew up,
- 13:35this is where he's from, this is where he's grown his music journey,
- 13:39so that's exciting. And then June eighth we have a Sunshine Coast show
- 13:45at the Precinct that's a namble and that's going to be really fun. We've
- 13:50got Accid Cherry joining us there such Yeah, there's such a sick female fronted
- 13:56like all girl band that just oh, they absolutely slay. And we've got
- 14:00quite a few other bands playing like Ancient Remains as well as joining the show.
- 14:05And then June twentieth we've got a really special show we've joined in Brisbane
- 14:11and I'll try and I guess lead people up to guessing it because we're not
- 14:16announced as the support yet, but we've been confirmed and that's going to be
- 14:20so cool. It's also with a big band, so we're really excited to
- 14:26share when that's announced. Who are playing with. Congratulations, Yeah, thank
- 14:31you so much, No as right, well, once as usual, being
- 14:35an absolute pleasure speaking with you. This single Charade is out five pm on
- 14:39May the twenty third, and she's another crash from me. Maybe it's just
- 14:43keep on raising the bar every time. So congratulations,
