- 0:03Ron, what do you think about secrets?
- 0:06Sometimes secrets are not good, and you should never keep a
- 0:10secret about something that's hurting you or hurting someone
- 0:13else. I agree, but the secret we're
- 0:16going to talk about today is definitely good if Jesus didn't
- 0:20want the secret to be kept a mystery from kids, especially if
- 0:24those kids are born again children of God.
- 0:27Did you say mystery? I love a good mystery.
- 0:31Sherlock Holmes, Hardy Boys, I love those stories.
- 0:35I used to search all over the house trying to find where my
- 0:39parents hid my birthday presents.
- 0:41I tried to get them to give me clues but they always answered
- 0:45it's a secret. I'm not going to tell you Jesus.
- 0:48Didn't hide this secret from us. He hid the secret for us to
- 0:53discover. In Mark 424 through 26, Jesus
- 0:57explained that how much we think about and study God's Word will
- 1:02determine how much we understand it.
- 1:07And Jesus said to them. Be careful what you are hearing.
- 1:11The measure of thought and study you give to the truth you hear
- 1:14will be the measure of virtue and knowledge that comes back to
- 1:17you, and more besides will be given to you who hear.
- 1:21Mark 4/24. I hope our friends will pay
- 1:28close attention so the Holy Spirit can help them understand
- 1:31the secret of God's Kingdom. You know, Sherlock Holmes and
- 1:36the Hardy Boys spent a lot of time looking for clues.
- 1:40Can I give our friends the first clue to discovering the secret
- 1:43of God's Kingdom? Absolutely.
- 1:46Let's get right to it. Here goes clue number one.
- 1:56Get your Bible and look up Mark chapter 4 beginning in verse
- 2:01one. You can read along with us.
- 2:06Verse One. Once again Jesus began teaching
- 2:10by the Lakeshore. A very large crowd soon gathered
- 2:14around him, so he got into a boat.
- 2:17Then he sat in the boat while all the people remained on the
- 2:20shore. He taught them by telling many
- 2:23stories in the form of parables such as this one.
- 2:27Listen. A farmer went out to plant some
- 2:29seed. As he scattered it across the
- 2:31field, some of the seed fell on a footpath.
- 2:34The birds came and ate it. Verse 9 then Jesus.
- 2:38Said. Anyone with ears to hear should
- 2:41listen and understand. I wonder what our friend Paco
- 2:46understands about this parable. One day Jesus told this story
- 2:54about a dude that liked to sow Bibles.
- 2:57Wait, he sowed Bibles? How do you sew Bibles?
- 3:01I don't know man with a needle and thread.
- 3:04It was Jesus story not mine. I guess in Bible times people
- 3:08sewed bibles. They were called Sowers.
- 3:11That doesn't sound right. It's right if Jesus told it so.
- 3:16This dude was sewing Bibles and some Bible seeds fell on the
- 3:19sidewalk. What's a Bible seed?
- 3:22I don't know. I guess when you sew Bibles
- 3:25together, seeds fall on the ground.
- 3:27That's all I know. That doesn't sound right.
- 3:30Anyways, the birds came and ate the seeds because Bible seeds
- 3:36are bird seeds. Is this story in Mark 4?
- 3:41Yeah, you know this story. It's the story of the Sower
- 3:45sowing the Word of God. Yeah, he sowed Bibles.
- 3:48The Word of God is the Bible. Yes, but the sower is like a
- 3:53farmer A. Farmer sowed Bibles.
- 3:57No, he planted seed in the ground.
- 3:59That's what the word sow means Sow So.
- 4:04What happened to his needle and thread?
- 4:06That's sew. That's what I'm trying to tell
- 4:09you. Jesus is talking about a farmer,
- 4:12that kind of and the seed that he plants in the ground is the
- 4:16word of God. So why is the farmer trying to
- 4:19plant seed in a sidewalk? The sidewalk represents
- 4:23different people's hearts. Jesus talked about four
- 4:26different kinds of hearts. Some people's hearts are hard
- 4:29ground that doesn't receive God's Word, and some people's
- 4:33hearts are good ground because they think about God's Word and
- 4:36it causes their faith to grow. I'm going to have to read that
- 4:40story again, man. It's.
- 4:42Our job to make sure our hearts are tender so that when we hear
- 4:46God's word, we believe it and do what it says.
- 4:49That's our word for today. Tender hearted.
- 4:52Tender hearted. People with a hard heart are too
- 4:55busy to listen to the word of God, or they don't care what the
- 4:59word of God says. But a tender hearted person
- 5:02loves the word of God and wants to listen so he can learn what
- 5:05it says. Is your heart tender, Paco?
- 5:09Oh yeah, it is. Now.
- 5:11It wasn't always tender. When I was 9 my heart was niner.
- 5:16But then I had a birthday and now my heart is tender.
- 5:21I'm tender hearted but what happens when I turn 11?
- 5:25Will it stop being tender? Never mind.
- 5:30I guess it'll be a lavender. Thankfully, Jesus explained his
- 5:38parable in Mark chapter 4, verse 10.
- 5:44Later, when Jesus was alone with the 12 disciples and with the
- 5:47others who were gathered around, they asked him what the parables
- 5:51meant. He replied.
- 5:53You are permitted to understand the secret of the.
- 5:56Kingdom of God. Verse 13.
- 5:58Then Jesus said to them. If you can't understand the
- 6:01meaning of this parable, how will you understand all the
- 6:04other parables? So let's interrupt right here
- 6:09for just a minute. Ron, did you catch what Jesus
- 6:12said about understanding the secret of the Kingdom of God?
- 6:16I did. Jesus said that we're permitted
- 6:19to understand the secret of God's Kingdom.
- 6:22God wants us to know and understand the meaning of this
- 6:25parable, which by the way, a parable is a story that Jesus
- 6:30used with familiar characters like a farmer and familiar
- 6:34objects like seed to help us learn principles about his
- 6:37Kingdom. Right.
- 6:39Jesus also said that understanding this parable would
- 6:43help us unlock the meaning of all the other parables, so this
- 6:48secret is super important. Let's continue with verse 14
- 6:52where Jesus explains the meaning of his parable.
- 6:59The farmer plants seed by taking God's Word to others.
- 7:02The seed that fell on the footpath represents those who
- 7:05hear the message, only to have Satan come at once and take it
- 7:08away. Shoe go away bird, get out of
- 7:17here. How did you get in here in the
- 7:19first place? Damon, it's me.
- 7:23Master, why are you wearing a bird costume?
- 7:27Wait, is it Halloween already? No.
- 7:31It's not Halloween. Okay, so why are you wearing a
- 7:35bird costume? I'm going to go eat some seed.
- 7:38Seed. Why seed?
- 7:41We have deviled ham. Deviled eggs.
- 7:44Devil's food cake. I'm not going to eat the seed.
- 7:47I just want people to think I'm eating the seed.
- 7:49What are you talking about? The Word of God is like a seed
- 7:53that when planted in people's hearts, will produce fruit in
- 7:56their lives. I still don't know what you're
- 7:59talking about. The word of God makes people's
- 8:02lives better. That I understand.
- 8:05We don't want people's lives to get better.
- 8:08So when you know who plants the word in people's hearts, I'm
- 8:12going to swoop in and steal it. Do you mean Jesus?
- 8:18Don't say that name. Sorry master.
- 8:22Wish me luck. Master, you can't just swoop
- 8:25into people's hearts. Why not?
- 8:27For the same reason God can't swoop into people's hearts.
- 8:31People have to open their heart and let them in.
- 8:34And I don't know how many people will let you in.
- 8:37Or a bird for that matter. So if people don't let God's
- 8:41word in their heart, then I could steal it, right?
- 8:44I suppose so. So we just have to figure out
- 8:47ways to get people not to let the word of God in their hearts.
- 8:51How are we going to do? That.
- 8:53We'll put blinders on their minds so they don't understand
- 8:56it. What's a blinder?
- 8:58Don't worry about it, it keeps them from understanding.
- 9:01What if they did understand it but didn't want to obey?
- 9:05Like loving your enemies? Who wants to do that?
- 9:09Oh yeah, that's good. That will keep their heart hard.
- 9:13Oh, and we could distract people so they don't.
- 9:15Hear God. 'S word when it's being.
- 9:17Taught Oh, you're on a roll today, Damon.
- 9:20You're starting to think like a real demon.
- 9:23Does this mean I can get a promotion?
- 9:25I doubt it. Promotion comes from the Lord.
- 9:28Oh yeah, I forgot. That's another way I could steal
- 9:32the word, get people to forget. OK, Damon, you work on getting
- 9:37people to forget the word. I know.
- 9:40And get people to ignore the word.
- 9:43I know. And get people to reject the
- 9:46word. I know.
- 9:48Oh, and get people to think they already know the word of God.
- 9:52That will keep their hearts hard too.
- 9:54It seems like I'm doing all the work.
- 9:57What are you going to do? I'll pass out blinders and swoop
- 10:00in and steal the word that's laying on people's hard hearts.
- 10:04I want to swoop. How come you get this Swoop?
- 10:07Let me swoop. Swoop this.
- 10:11Ow. Never mind, I don't want to
- 10:14swoop anymore. We're back with Detective Clue
- 10:19Finder. He's going to help us uncover
- 10:22the secret to God's Kingdom. He looks for clues by asking
- 10:25questions. Listen closely so you can test
- 10:29your knowledge and make sure you understand.
- 10:36In this parable, who? Plants seed.
- 10:40A farmer plants the seed. That's.
- 10:42Right. Now who?
- 10:44Is the farmer. The scripture doesn't say
- 10:49exactly. I think we'll come back to that
- 10:53question after we figure out some of these other clues.
- 10:57What does the? Seed represent the seed
- 11:01represents God's word. Where does the farmer plant the
- 11:05seed? A farmer plants the seed in
- 11:07soil. What does the?
- 11:09Soil represent. The soil represents people's
- 11:12hearts. What kind of soil or heart did
- 11:17the seed land in first? The path so hard that the seed
- 11:21can't sink in. Oh, that sounds like a problem.
- 11:26If the seed doesn't sink into the soil, something very bad can
- 11:32happen to the seed. Does anyone know what that could
- 11:36be? The birds.
- 11:37Can come and steal the seed. How do you suppose the soil on
- 11:41the path became hardened from? Walking on it.
- 11:45That's a very important point right there.
- 11:49We need to make sure that our hearts do not become hardened.
- 11:53You know, like when we get a callus on our finger from
- 11:56writing so much. We need to make sure that our
- 11:59hearts are tender, open and ready to receive God's Word,
- 12:04ready to do what it says right away so we don't forget about
- 12:08it. Now this one is tricky.
- 12:12I'll give you another clue. The answer to this question is
- 12:16found in Mark chapter 4, verses 3 and 4.
- 12:20What happened to the seed that was planted on their hardened
- 12:24path? Birds came and ate the seed.
- 12:27Excellent. You are more than a junior
- 12:30detective, you're moving on up to a master detective.
- 12:35Who do the birds represent in this story?
- 12:39The Devil. So what does the devil want to
- 12:42steal from people's hearts? The devil wants to steal God's
- 12:45word from people's hearts. I think we're going to have to
- 12:49go back to that tough question, who is the farmer?
- 12:55Our parents. Our teachers.
- 12:57Both of those answers are correct.
- 13:00I think we can also say that we are farmers planting seeds of
- 13:06God's Word in our own hearts. That's right, detective clue
- 13:11Finder. In First Corinthians 3, six
- 13:14through 9, Paul writes to Christians saying, I planted the
- 13:18seed in your hearts and Apollos watered it, but it was God who
- 13:22made it grow. It's not important who does the
- 13:25planting or who does the watering.
- 13:27What's important is that God makes the seed grow.
- 13:31When we sow God's Word in our own hearts, we must make sure
- 13:36our hearts are tender or receptive to believe what the
- 13:39Bible says and be ready to do what the Bible says.
- 13:50Help. Help.
- 13:51I've been attacked by birds. Help.
- 13:54Hey, what's going on here? Oh, please, Mr. Farmer, you got
- 13:59to help me. Please help me.
- 14:01What are you? I'm a scarecrow A.
- 14:05Scarecrow that talks, What will they think of next?
- 14:10Didn't. You just say you were being
- 14:11attacked by birds. Well yeah, that's why I need
- 14:15help. How do I keep the birds away?
- 14:18You don't know how to scare the birds away.
- 14:22Oh, now don't go making fun of me.
- 14:24I know it's my job to scare birds away, but I can't.
- 14:28Besides, I don't want to scare them away.
- 14:31I want to keep them away so I won't have to scare them I hate.
- 14:35Birds. Well, are you a hearer or a
- 14:40doer? Say what?
- 14:43Do you obey the word of God? Obey the word of God.
- 14:47Are you kidding? I don't even understand it.
- 14:50How can I obey what? I don't understand what.
- 14:54Don't you understand? Well, like the Bible says to be
- 14:58born again, right? Well, yeah, that's right.
- 15:01God wants us all to be born again.
- 15:03How do I get back inside my mom's stomach?
- 15:07You think being born again means that you have to get back in
- 15:11your mom's stomach and come out again.
- 15:13Yeah. And my mom wasn't really excited
- 15:16about the idea. I'm bigger than she is, you
- 15:18know. Look, being born again does not
- 15:21mean you get in your mom's stomach and come out again.
- 15:25Well, she'll be glad to hear that.
- 15:27So how do I get born? Again, well, you ask Jesus into
- 15:31your heart. Romans 10/9 says that if you
- 15:34confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in in your
- 15:37heart that God has raised him from the dead, you will be
- 15:40saved. Well, why didn't they say that
- 15:43in the 1st place? Hey, what's all this got to do
- 15:46with keeping the birds away? God's Word is like a seed that
- 15:51is planted in our hearts. If you listen carefully to the
- 15:54seed of God's Word so that you understand it well, then you can
- 15:57obey it. And if you obey the word of God,
- 16:00there won't be any seed laying around for the birds, and
- 16:03they'll go somewhere else to eat.
- 16:05What if I don't want to obey the word of God?
- 16:08Why wouldn't you want to obey God's word?
- 16:11Luke 1128 says Blessed are those who hear the word of God and
- 16:15keep it. Besides, without God's word in
- 16:17your heart, you're nothing but a bird brain.
- 16:20What? There's a bird on my brain.
- 16:24No, there's no bird on your brain.
- 16:27Besides, I'm not even sure you have a brain, you know?
- 16:30I've never seen you around here before.
- 16:33I'm too busy hiding from birds. Hey, where are the birds?
- 16:38Well, that's what I've been trying to tell you.
- 16:40We help you understand the Bible so you can do what it says.
- 16:44That way the birds can't eat the seed of God's Word and they have
- 16:47to go somewhere else. You're welcome to stick around
- 16:51here. Well, why didn't you say that in
- 16:54the 1st place? I can't stand birds.
- 17:03King David prayed this prayer in Psalm 2711.
- 17:07Teach me your way, O Lord, and lead me in a smooth path because
- 17:11of my enemies. King David had enemies, problems
- 17:15that he had to face and overcome, but he didn't try to
- 17:18handle those enemies or problems by himself.
- 17:22King David needed God to lead him.
- 17:24He knew that learning God's ways would make his life better.
- 17:28King Davidde heart was good ground.
- 17:31Have you thought about your heart?
- 17:34Do you want it to be good ground?
- 17:36What can you do to make sure your heart is good ground?
- 17:40When we hear or read God's Word, we should take time to think
- 17:44about it and make sure that we understand what it means.
- 17:48Understanding is a big deal. Jesus said that understanding
- 17:52this parable is the key to understanding all of his
- 17:56teaching. Proverbs 226 For the Lord gives
- 18:00wisdom from his mouth come knowledge and understanding.
- 18:04Jesus gave us this parable so we can understand.
- 18:06Understand how the Word of God causes us to bring forth good
- 18:10fruit when we, number one, receive it in our hearts #2 take
- 18:16time to understand it. And three, do what it says.
- 18:21That's how the seeds of God's Word grow and cause our faith in
- 18:25Jesus to grow. Church is not over yet.
- 18:34I can only hide in the bathroom for so long.
- 18:37If anyone ever finds out and tells my mom, I'll be in big
- 18:40trouble. Nobody knows you were.
- 18:42Hiding. In the bathroom Now that we're
- 18:45here, Brittany, let's pay attention to what the.
- 18:47Teacher is saying she's teaching the word of.
- 18:49God and I really need to hear it.
- 18:52I'm your heart and I'm in bad. Shape.
- 18:55I don't know why my parents make me come to church.
- 18:58I know all these stories. I've heard this one 100 times.
- 19:04Last week I was talking during church, so the teacher told my
- 19:07mom I'd better be quiet. Today, great, it's.
- 19:12Easier to pay attention when you're quiet.
- 19:14Maybe today you'll decide to do what God's Word says, hey?
- 19:18Bratney's here. Her name is Brittany.
- 19:21I just call him the way I see him.
- 19:23She's definitely a brat. I'm just in time to eat a little
- 19:28seed. How do you like my bird costume?
- 19:32Why are you dressed like a? Bird and what?
- 19:35Are you doing here? At church.
- 19:36I like to steal the seed before it gets into kids hearts.
- 19:40I get some of my best meals at church just.
- 19:44Leave us alone. Go pack on someone.
- 19:46Else. Not a chance.
- 19:48I love to steal God's word from kids like Bratney.
- 19:51Do you know why? Yeah.
- 19:54Because God's word is like seed that is planted in hearts like
- 19:57me. If I get God's word inside me,
- 20:00it'll. Grow and produce.
- 20:01Fruit in Brittanys life and you'll be finished.
- 20:04Kapoot over hell done for. You won't be able to steal the
- 20:10word of God from us anymore because Brittany will be a doer
- 20:13of God. 'S word.
- 20:14Well, that'll never happen, not with Bratney.
- 20:17She thinks she knows it all, so she doesn't pay attention to the
- 20:20teacher. Besides, Bratney does everything
- 20:24I say. Watch this.
- 20:26Hey Bratney, why don't you get out of here for a little while
- 20:30and get yourself a drink of water?
- 20:33I got to go get a drink of water.
- 20:36That kid drinks more water at church than she does all week
- 20:41because I tell her to. Give us a break, why don't you?
- 20:47Bother someone else? Look at me.
- 20:50Check out. All these bandages.
- 20:52That's because I'm always pecking on you.
- 20:56Get it? I'm pecking on you.
- 20:59Pack. Ouch, pack.
- 21:00Ouch pack. Ouch.
- 21:04Bratney's back. Her name is Brittany.
- 21:07Let's pay attention, Brittany. You'll learn something if you'll
- 21:10just pay attention. Hey Bratney, what's for lunch
- 21:14today? Don't listen to what your
- 21:16teacher says. Lunch is more important.
- 21:19Do you want to go to Chuck E Cheese or Golden Corral?
- 21:23Olive Garden, Applebee's. Or maybe you can think of
- 21:27something better? Boy, I'm hungry.
- 21:31I hope we go to McDonald's today.
- 21:33They have happy meals. I wonder if my dad will take us
- 21:37there. Beck.
- 21:38Ouch. Beck.
- 21:40Ouch. She's not paying attention.
- 21:42This is my chance to steal the Word again.
- 21:46Hey, where's Brittany going now? Oh well, who cares?
- 21:49As long as she doesn't listen to God's Word, that's all that
- 21:52matters. Her.
- 21:53Name is Brittany. Where's that heart going?
- 21:58I must have hurt his feelings. He probably doesn't want me to
- 22:02pack on him. I'll get him when Brittany comes
- 22:05back. I hope she doesn't stay out
- 22:07there too long. I'm hungry for some more seed.
- 22:10Hey, hurry up Brittany, and bring your heart back in here.
- 22:17I'm going to pay attention from now on.
- 22:20I'm not going to let the devil steal God's word from me
- 22:23anymore. What?
- 22:26Wait, what happened out there in the hall?
- 22:29Hey there, bird beak. Who are you?
- 22:32You don't recognize me anymore. Do you?
- 22:35I'm Brittany's heart. You're Brittany's heart.
- 22:40Whoa, whoa, What happened out in the?
- 22:43Hall Somebody talked to Brittany.
- 22:45About how you distract. Her so that she won't grow.
- 22:48Spiritually. Brittany prayed and repented.
- 22:51From now on. She's going to listen to the
- 22:54teacher and I'm going to get even stronger.
- 22:58I I'm, I'm, I'm I'm getting out of here.
- 23:05What's my dad doing here? Oh, is church over already?
- 23:11I was just starting to have fun. Life is going to get better now
- 23:15that Brittany's listening to the.
- 23:17Word of God. Did you know that this parable
- 23:25is recorded in three different books of the Bible?
- 23:29I do know that Matthew, Mark and Luke.
- 23:32That's right, here's what Luke's version says.
- 23:36The seeds that. Fell on the footpath represent.
- 23:39Those who hear the message only to have the devil come and take
- 23:42it away from their hearts. And prevent them from.
- 23:44Believing in being saved. Jesus warned us that the devil
- 23:48wants people to forget what they hear, so they won't believe it
- 23:52and act on it. This is especially true about
- 23:55believing on Jesus and receiving salvation.
- 23:58Let's stop right now and make sure that our friends who are
- 24:01listening are good ground. Have you received Jesus as your
- 24:05Lord and Savior? If not, you can pray with me
- 24:09now. Jesus, I believe you are the Son
- 24:14of God. You died on the cross for my
- 24:20sins. You rose from the dead and you
- 24:26are alive today. Jesus, I receive you as my Lord
- 24:34and Savior. Thank you for making me your
- 24:39child in Jesus name, Amen. Hey Ron, can you think of
- 24:51something that is so important to you that you hide it in your
- 24:55memory so that no one else can find it?
- 24:59I hide the password to my bank accounts and I hide A key to my
- 25:04house just in case I get locked out.
- 25:07Some things are so valuable that we have to hide them for
- 25:11safekeeping. I hide something even more
- 25:14important than passwords and keys.
- 25:16Do you know what it is, Carrie? I think so, but why don't you
- 25:20tell all of us? I hide God's word in my heart so
- 25:25that I don't sin against God. Psalm 1/19/11.
- 25:29When you plant God's Word in your heart, it's because it's
- 25:33valuable and by planting a seed, you expect it to grow and
- 25:37produce God fruit in your life. It's kind of like hiding
- 25:42treasure that you know will grow and produce good things in your
- 25:46heart. What was that for?
- 25:53It's time to make sure our friends know today's secret.
- 25:57God's Word is seed that we plant in our hearts.
- 26:01And we plant it in our hearts to make sure we understand it and
- 26:06do it.
