Sam: Hey, welcome to 7 Minute Books. I'm Sam, and today we're talking about Vaporized by Robert Tercek. Sophie, I want to start with the title, because when I hear a word like vaporized, I think data loss or something getting deleted. But that's not really what this book is about, is it?
• 0:18
Sophie: No, and that's what makes it such a fun read. Tercek flips the word around completely. Vaporization is what happens when a solid, physical thing turns into software, and it's already happening to music, taxis, universities, and probably whatever industry you work in. So it's less a warning about losing data and more a map of why the ground keeps shifting under everyone's feet.
• 0:42
Sam: Right, and I think the music example is where he starts. You used to buy a record, then a tape, then a CD. Then suddenly you're not buying anything at all, you're just streaming it. That felt like a small change at the time, and now it looks like the template for everything else.
• 0:59
Sophie: Exactly, and that's the foundational model for the whole book. The product stopped being an object you own and became a licensed experience you access from anywhere. Once you see that pattern in music, you start spotting it everywhere else.
• 1:14
Sam: Okay, so what's actually driving it? Because I kept expecting him to say it's just technology getting better, and he doesn't really say that.
• 1:22
Sophie: No, and I think that's the sharpest move in the book. He says the real driver is a shift in what people expect. He uses the phrase digital native, but not as a demographic, more as a mindset. We've all been trained by Google and Amazon and Netflix to expect instant, personalized, frictionless access to basically everything.
• 1:44
Sam: Which is kind of wild, because that expectation is the solvent. It's not the technology itself dissolving these industries, it's us and our impatience.
• 1:55
Sophie: Yeah, you just want the thing now, tailored to you, on your phone. And any old industrial model that can't deliver that starts to look like a rotary phone.
• 2:04
Sam: So then he lays out the actual mechanics, and this is the part I was scribbling notes on. He says it follows a pretty predictable cycle. First a product gets digitized, then it gets dematerialized, then demonetized, and finally democratized.
• 2:21
Sophie: Right, and it's worth walking through those one at a time because it's a really clean lens. Digitization is just turning the analog thing into bits. Dematerialization is when the physical container disappears, so the CD or the paper map or the plastic credit card just goes away.
• 2:38
Sam: Then demonetization hits, and that's when the cost of copying and distributing falls to basically zero. That's what wrecks the old pricing. And democratization is the last step, where anyone with a good idea and a connection can get in, and the old gatekeepers lose their grip.
• 2:56
Sophie: And the taxi example is perfect for that cycle. The old industry was built on a car and a medallion, a physical asset plus a regulated license. Uber and Lyft digitized the dispatch, dematerialized the payment, made the ride cheaper than a cab, and then opened up the supply of drivers to anyone. All four steps, in order.
• 3:19
Sam: And that cycle is relentless. That's the word he uses. It doesn't stop at one industry. It just keeps moving through the next solid-looking sector.
• 3:28
Sophie: Which brings us to the uncomfortable part, the incumbents. He's pretty blunt about what he calls the legacy mindset. These big companies are built for optimization and efficiency and risk aversion, and that's exactly the wrong wiring for a world that demands experimentation and rapid iteration.
• 3:47
Sam: I actually pushed back on this a little when I first read it, honestly. Because it's easy to say big companies are too slow. But his point is that the very processes that made them successful are the ones that become fatal. Long development cycles, hierarchical decisions, protecting the existing revenue. That's the innovator's dilemma on steroids.
• 4:10
Sophie: Yeah, and his answer is uncomfortable. The only way an incumbent survives is by cannibalizing its own business model before a startup does it for them. Which sounds great in a keynote and is terrifying to actually do.
• 4:24
Sam: And he takes that same logic and points it at the individual, which is where it got personal for me. If industries are vaporizing, careers are too. The idea of one stable job at one company for thirty years is basically gone.
• 4:40
Sophie: He calls it the portfolio career. You become a collection of flexible services, and the security of a job title gets replaced by the precarious freedom of being a free agent. He literally says think of yourself as a startup of one.
• 4:55
Sam: And the most valuable asset isn't the diploma or the pension anymore. It's the ability to learn, unlearn, and relearn. Which is sobering, but honestly it's also kind of empowering, because it puts the agency back on you.
• 5:10
Sophie: That's the tension I felt the whole way through. It's freeing and it's exhausting at the same time.
• 5:17
Sam: And he doesn't pretend it's all upside, which I appreciated. He's not a naive techno-optimist. He goes into the winner-take-all dynamics, the gig work, the erosion of privacy, the power piling up in a few giant platforms.
• 5:32
Sophie: And he asks the hard social questions too. When the employer-employee relationship gets vaporized, who provides the health insurance, the retirement savings, the sense of community? He doesn't fully answer that, but I'm glad he raises it.
• 5:46
Sam: So then he shifts to where the value actually goes. He says we're moving from the Information Age into what he calls the Age of Experience. Data is abundant and cheap now, so the scarce resource is attention and context and meaning.
• 6:03
Sophie: Which is why he says Apple isn't really a computer company and Disney isn't just a movie studio. They're experience companies. The winners design a compelling, personalized experience around the product, and vaporization is just the tool that lets them deliver it at scale.
• 6:20
Sam: And then the strategic move, which I think is the most actionable part. Stop thinking in products and start thinking in platforms. A product is a one-time transaction, a platform is a continuous relationship.
• 6:34
Sophie: Right, and every business has to ask how it becomes a platform for its customers. Open up your core capabilities, build a marketplace, grow a community. The goal is to move from a linear value chain to a networked ecosystem.
• 6:49
Sam: So the takeaway he lands on is that vaporization isn't really a choice, it's just the condition we're living in. The only choice is whether you're a victim of it or an architect of the new thing. And he wants everyone in permanent beta.
• 7:03
Sophie: Permanent beta, where everything is always subject to revision. And a new kind of literacy, digital and strategic, that goes beyond just using the tools to understanding the logic underneath them.
• 7:15
Sam: The one thing I'm actually taking away is that the solid ground was always an illusion. The only thing that's truly solid is our ability to adapt. That's the line I keep coming back to.
• 7:27
Sophie: And if you want to go deeper, the whole library is over at 7minutebooks.com/app. There are more than 6,000 fiction and nonfiction titles you can read or listen to in any language, and it starts at $2.99 a month, $9.99 a year, or $19.99 once for lifetime access.
• 7:50
Sophie: Vaporized is really a book about letting go of the physical and treating the digital as raw material for building something new. We'll see you in the next one.
