- 0:01SPEAKER_00: Hello, hello, and welcome back to Let's Talk Trail Running.
- 0:04SPEAKER_00: It's me, your host, Rob Prosser.
- 0:06SPEAKER_00: I was hoping to get this episode out a bit earlier,
- 0:10SPEAKER_00: but alas,
- 0:11here we are now that Fantasy Free Trail unlocked the ability to
- 0:15make picks about a
- 0:15SPEAKER_00: day ago.
- 0:16SPEAKER_00: I'm recording this on Tuesday.
- 0:18SPEAKER_00: And before the upcoming race, that is Chuckanut 50K.
- 0:23SPEAKER_00: Before I start talking about picks and things like that,
- 0:25SPEAKER_00: some little housekeeping items,
- 0:27Trans Grand Canaria Marathon and the classic event or the last
- 0:31event I talked about.
- 0:34SPEAKER_00: And both those events went pretty well on the pick side for the marathon.
- 0:40SPEAKER_00: I think I went 28th out of 389th.
- 0:43SPEAKER_00: And for the Classic, I think I went 70th out of like almost 600 picks.
- 0:49So I'm knocking on the door of the top 10 for the overall leaderboard,
- 0:53which is pretty cool.
- 0:54SPEAKER_00: And just some thoughts coming off of Trans-Grand Canaria.
- 0:58I think the two big storylines are probably one,
- 1:02Caleb Olsen has ascended the throne.
- 1:06SPEAKER_00: If you can knock off John Albin.
- 1:07SPEAKER_00: I know he had a little bit of a stomach issue,
- 1:11SPEAKER_00: it sounds like,
- 1:11SPEAKER_00: and you had to stop and get that sorted.
- 1:13SPEAKER_00: But I feel like if you can knock off John Albin at any race,
- 1:16SPEAKER_00: that is proof that you are doing lots of things right.
- 1:20SPEAKER_00: His Substack articles were awesome.
- 1:22SPEAKER_00: He dropped one right
- 1:24SPEAKER_00: as the race started at midnight in Euro land,
- 1:27SPEAKER_00: and then,
- 1:28SPEAKER_00: um,
- 1:29SPEAKER_00: has also had some good content post race that I highly,
- 1:32SPEAKER_00: highly recommend.
- 1:33SPEAKER_00: Super excited to see how his schedule plays out.
- 1:35SPEAKER_00: He was looking for feedback from,
- 1:37SPEAKER_00: uh,
- 1:38SPEAKER_00: people on,
- 1:39SPEAKER_00: uh,
- 1:40kind of he's eyeballing four or five races and where people
- 1:43think he should focus
- 1:44SPEAKER_00: his attention.
- 1:44SPEAKER_00: Uh,
- 1:45SPEAKER_00: Don't know that it will necessarily sway him.
- 1:47SPEAKER_00: I think it will all depend on his individual life circumstances,
- 1:50but pretty cool how he's engaging with people and giving an
- 1:53inside look at how he
- 1:54SPEAKER_00: chooses to craft his schedule and choose his races and things like that.
- 1:59SPEAKER_00: But the race was really good.
- 2:00SPEAKER_00: I messed myself up.
- 2:04I told you that one of the two British guys was going to be in
- 2:06the top five,
- 2:07SPEAKER_00: and I picked the wrong one.
- 2:08SPEAKER_00: I went with Mark Derbyshire and Josh Wade.
- 2:11Had a killer race,
- 2:11probably his best performance yet with that third place.
- 2:14running up there with the big dogs and I was really really
- 2:17impressed with him
- 2:19disappointed and pick him and really cool to see I'm excited to
- 2:21see where he's gone
- 2:22I think he's a big name to watch this year and I think he'll be
- 2:26racing some some
- 2:27really good races he seems to be a very very smart racer picks
- 2:30strategic races and
- 2:32I bet he's going to have some big big results this year in
- 2:35Europe so curious to see
- 2:36where else he will be racing at and then the marathon second
- 2:41big storyline that
- 2:42SPEAKER_00: past video
- 2:43SPEAKER_00: From Francesco Poopy on Robert Kamoy at the end.
- 2:47SPEAKER_00: I think if I'm not mistaken,
- 2:48SPEAKER_00: when I chatted in the podcast,
- 2:49SPEAKER_00: I picked Francesco to go second behind Robert.
- 2:51SPEAKER_00: And he very nearly did, but he raced all the way through the line.
- 2:56SPEAKER_00: Um,
- 2:56SPEAKER_00: and his splits on the last 5k,
- 2:59SPEAKER_00: I think he put down like a 17,
- 3:02SPEAKER_00: 15,
- 3:02SPEAKER_00: 5k at the end of that essentially 30 mile race.
- 3:04SPEAKER_00: It's a little bit more than a marathon.
- 3:06SPEAKER_00: Um, yeah, he smoked it.
- 3:08SPEAKER_00: He was kicking and closing, um, and really, really, really cool videos.
- 3:11SPEAKER_00: If you haven't seen that, you can go on, um,
- 3:14SPEAKER_00: I think they're on Francesco's Instagram.
- 3:15SPEAKER_00: And if not, you can go on Trans-Granc Canaria's Instagram.
- 3:17SPEAKER_00: But man, that boy closed, looks super good.
- 3:20SPEAKER_00: And just very, very well done on his part.
- 3:25SPEAKER_00: So that was pretty cool.
- 3:27SPEAKER_00: Trans-Granc Canaria looks like an amazing race.
- 3:30Don't know if I'd love the midnight start on that classic,
- 3:32but it would be amazing.
- 3:33SPEAKER_00: I think all those island races,
- 3:34SPEAKER_00: whether it's Trans-Granc Canaria,
- 3:37SPEAKER_00: Madeira Island Ultra Trail or Trans-Valcania,
- 3:39SPEAKER_00: just the concept of running across an island.
- 3:41SPEAKER_00: And be it an island,
- 3:42SPEAKER_00: you know,
- 3:42SPEAKER_00: off the coast,
- 3:44SPEAKER_00: whether it's in the Azores,
- 3:45SPEAKER_00: the Canaries,
- 3:46SPEAKER_00: both those places sound amazing.
- 3:48And I think that's definitely a goal of mine would be to race
- 3:51one of those races,
- 3:53SPEAKER_00: if not all three.
- 3:54It just seems like an awesome time of year to be racing in an
- 3:56awesome place.
- 3:57SPEAKER_00: And it seems like the community on the island is really, really involved.
- 4:02SPEAKER_00: Other tiny housekeeping items.
- 4:05SPEAKER_00: On the personal side of things,
- 4:07SPEAKER_00: I got to race last weekend at the Run Through Time Half Marathon.
- 4:10SPEAKER_00: which was pretty cool.
- 4:11SPEAKER_00: Had a good race, a good day.
- 4:12Those trails out in Salida is my first time out there after
- 4:15living in Colorado
- 4:16SPEAKER_00: Springs for about a year.
- 4:17SPEAKER_00: Those trails in Salida are awesome.
- 4:18SPEAKER_00: They're impressively technical coming downhill.
- 4:21SPEAKER_00: But I say that because I really enjoy that type of stuff.
- 4:25SPEAKER_00: And in even cooler news,
- 4:26SPEAKER_00: I got to witness the goat,
- 4:28SPEAKER_00: Miss Courtney DeWalter,
- 4:30SPEAKER_00: crush a race,
- 4:32SPEAKER_00: crush the marathon distance and get first overall.
- 4:37SPEAKER_00: So that's pretty cool to see Courtney in person.
- 4:39SPEAKER_00: I've never done that.
- 4:40Uh,
- 4:40I considered going up and talking to her,
- 4:42but my girlfriend was being kind of shy.
- 4:43Uh,
- 4:44so we decided not to,
- 4:45but she raced and finished within 20 seconds,
- 4:47my buddy,
- 4:47Dan Vega.
- 4:48SPEAKER_00: Um,
- 4:48SPEAKER_00: so I was going to chat with her about,
- 4:50SPEAKER_00: uh,
- 4:50SPEAKER_00: if they ran together at all,
- 4:52SPEAKER_00: uh,
- 4:52and then ask her some questions about her upcoming documentary
- 4:55with Ryan thrower.
- 4:56SPEAKER_00: But it was cool to see,
- 4:57SPEAKER_00: um,
- 4:57SPEAKER_00: cool to hear some people go up to her,
- 5:00SPEAKER_00: uh,
- 5:00SPEAKER_00: after the end of the race and say,
- 5:01SPEAKER_00: Hey,
- 5:01I know you probably get this all the time,
- 5:03but you're the reason I started running.
- 5:05SPEAKER_00: And as you'd expect,
- 5:06SPEAKER_00: she was super magnanimous,
- 5:07SPEAKER_00: super,
- 5:08SPEAKER_00: super cool and super patient with everyone.
- 5:11SPEAKER_00: So just a cool weekend slide.
- 5:12SPEAKER_00: It was gorgeous.
- 5:12SPEAKER_00: The race was good.
- 5:14SPEAKER_00: I ran a pretty good time.
- 5:15SPEAKER_00: And then other housekeeping things.
- 5:18SPEAKER_00: For the first time in my life,
- 5:20SPEAKER_00: I ran a sub five minute mile since the last time I recorded a podcast.
- 5:24SPEAKER_00: Having not started running until I was about 24, 24 years old.
- 5:26SPEAKER_00: I'm 29 now.
- 5:27SPEAKER_00: I never really tried to run a fast mile.
- 5:31SPEAKER_00: But it was pretty cool.
- 5:32SPEAKER_00: It took me a couple of tries.
- 5:33SPEAKER_00: I went 503 in the first one.
- 5:34SPEAKER_00: The second one,
- 5:36SPEAKER_00: I split halfway in like 226,
- 5:38SPEAKER_00: but my hammy felt pretty tight and I didn't want to push it.
- 5:42And then third time's the charm,
- 5:44I went 455 in a track home in Boise,
- 5:47Idaho,
- 5:48not too long ago.
- 5:49SPEAKER_00: So about a couple of weeks ago.
- 5:50SPEAKER_00: So that was pretty cool.
- 5:51SPEAKER_00: And in doing so, it made me think of a question for the Boulder Boys pod.
- 5:55So I went and asked it in the most recent episode and they
- 5:57spent a good bit of time talking.
- 5:58SPEAKER_00: I basically asked them what, you know,
- 6:01SPEAKER_00: Um,
- 6:01SPEAKER_00: what milestones,
- 6:03SPEAKER_00: um,
- 6:03SPEAKER_00: have been some lifelong goals of yours,
- 6:05SPEAKER_00: whether it's a certain time at a race or a certain time in event.
- 6:07SPEAKER_00: And then,
- 6:08SPEAKER_00: you know,
- 6:09SPEAKER_00: uh,
- 6:09SPEAKER_00: what was it like to achieve them or,
- 6:11SPEAKER_00: you know,
- 6:11SPEAKER_00: what are those milestones that are kind of on the horizon?
- 6:14SPEAKER_00: So I really appreciate them taking the time to answer that question.
- 6:16SPEAKER_00: Um, and it was cool.
- 6:18SPEAKER_00: It's cool to hear.
- 6:18SPEAKER_00: It's still,
- 6:20SPEAKER_00: I'm still getting used to hearing my voice and it's still weird,
- 6:23SPEAKER_00: uh,
- 6:23SPEAKER_00: to hear it played back.
- 6:24SPEAKER_00: And it was even weirder to hear it on a podcast that I listened to,
- 6:27SPEAKER_00: um,
- 6:28SPEAKER_00: pretty much whenever it comes out and have really come to enjoy.
- 6:30SPEAKER_00: But that was a neat little plus.
- 6:32SPEAKER_00: So just some personal housekeeping stuff.
- 6:34SPEAKER_00: Other big things too.
- 6:36SPEAKER_00: I'll do picks for Chuckanut this week and then Big Alta next week.
- 6:39SPEAKER_00: And I'll actually be at Big Alta and racing the 28K.
- 6:43My girlfriend will be,
- 6:44Caitlin will be racing her first ever 50K at the 50K.
- 6:48SPEAKER_00: So super exciting times.
- 6:50SPEAKER_00: I'm super stoked to be out there.
- 6:52SPEAKER_00: And then looking forward, I'm going to try to keep this podcast going.
- 6:57The biggest thing is I'll be gone out of the country for some
- 7:00military stuff,
- 7:01but I'm going to try to bring my recording equipment and still
- 7:04plan to talk about
- 7:04SPEAKER_00: races as much as I can.
- 7:06conditions permitting so we'll see how that goes anyways
- 7:10getting back into it today
- 7:11we're going to talk about the Chuckanut 50k over in Bellingham
- 7:16Washington a classic
- 7:16race I think last year was the 30th year so this will be year
- 7:19number 31 and it just
- 7:21seems like a really really good early season 50k fast good mix
- 7:25of terrain flat fast
- 7:27towpath type stuff good climbs good descents and apparently a
- 7:30ridge I'm curious
- 7:30SPEAKER_00: what that one looks like but if you're curious about the course
- 7:34SPEAKER_00: It sounds like on the most recent Boulder Boys podcast,
- 7:37SPEAKER_00: they did a good job of talking about it.
- 7:39SPEAKER_00: And they actually listened another.
- 7:41The first listener question before mine was basically talking
- 7:44about the listener asked,
- 7:46SPEAKER_00: hey,
- 7:46SPEAKER_00: if you raced Chuckanut,
- 7:47SPEAKER_00: what would be advice to a runner who is racing Chuckanut?
- 7:53SPEAKER_00: From a listener, I think he's racing it for the third time.
- 7:56SPEAKER_00: And they had a good mix of answers, I think.
- 7:58SPEAKER_00: Matt said he has two totally different athletes that are racing.
- 8:01SPEAKER_00: So it all depends on the individual, obviously.
- 8:02But Chuck and I is a really historic race with some goaded
- 8:06names in the top 10.
- 8:10And even if I look at the all-time top 10 results on the male
- 8:15and female side,
- 8:16SPEAKER_00: I mean,
- 8:16SPEAKER_00: we got some stunners on the men's side.
- 8:18uh one through ten adam peterman francesco poopy matt daniels
- 8:22max king adam mary
- 8:23hayden hawks anthony costales seth ruling drew holman and max
- 8:27king once again i
- 8:29guess cole lawson cole lawson if you only want to consider one
- 8:31of max king's times
- 8:33and then on the female side uh jody adams more for the fastest
- 8:39time ever uh
- 8:39impressively in 2013 i have not heard of her 20 uh so claire
- 8:44gallagher keely
- 8:45SPEAKER_00: henniger
- 8:46SPEAKER_00: Ellie Greenwood,
- 8:47SPEAKER_00: Lottie Albertson-Junkins,
- 8:49SPEAKER_00: Kat Drew,
- 8:50SPEAKER_00: Ellie Greenwood,
- 8:50SPEAKER_00: Ellie Greenwood,
- 8:51SPEAKER_00: Ellie Greenwood.
- 8:52SPEAKER_00: She was obviously very good about this race.
- 8:54SPEAKER_00: Claire DeVoe, and then Kimber Maddox and Magda Boulay.
- 9:00SPEAKER_00: So, yes, there's some really heavy
- 9:04SPEAKER_00: Big time hitters in this race.
- 9:07And just an exciting early Rust Buster Ultra for a good mix of
- 9:12different types of athletes.
- 9:13SPEAKER_00: So that'll be cool to see.
- 9:16SPEAKER_00: And talking about Chuckanut 50K, let's take a look at...
- 9:24SPEAKER_00: Let's take a look at the female side first.
- 9:28SPEAKER_00: Actually, I'm going to go with the male side first.
- 9:30SPEAKER_00: One important theme that I kind of noticed with the male side,
- 9:33SPEAKER_00: this is kind of the battle of the top five at JFK last year.
- 9:37SPEAKER_00: We've got two through four from JFK.
- 9:41So people that are coming off some really good results in
- 9:44longer distance races,
- 9:46SPEAKER_00: not too long ago at all,
- 9:47SPEAKER_00: you know,
- 9:48SPEAKER_00: that's Thanksgiving weekend of last year.
- 9:50SPEAKER_00: And when I'm saying two through four,
- 9:51SPEAKER_00: I'm talking about second place,
- 9:53SPEAKER_00: Mr.
- 9:53SPEAKER_00: Ryan Sullivan,
- 9:54SPEAKER_00: third place,
- 9:56SPEAKER_00: Mr.
- 9:56SPEAKER_00: Matthew Seidel,
- 9:58SPEAKER_00: and then fourth place,
- 9:59SPEAKER_00: Mr.
- 9:59SPEAKER_00: Trayson Knopp.
- 10:00SPEAKER_00: So it's kind of interesting little fun fact pulled out from...
- 10:07SPEAKER_00: uh,
- 10:08SPEAKER_00: from some of the research that I did for this podcast,
- 10:11SPEAKER_00: uh,
- 10:11SPEAKER_00: looking at the,
- 10:13SPEAKER_00: uh,
- 10:13SPEAKER_00: men's side,
- 10:15SPEAKER_00: um,
- 10:16SPEAKER_00: and just reading off some of the top names to begin with.
- 10:18SPEAKER_00: You got Will Murray fresh off the second place at black Canyon.
- 10:21SPEAKER_00: Really excited to see him race.
- 10:23SPEAKER_00: He got eighth last year at Chuckanut.
- 10:26And obviously we know he's in super good shape from his Black
- 10:29Canyon result.
- 10:31SPEAKER_00: Chuckanut being a little bit of a faster, sharper event.
- 10:35SPEAKER_00: I'm sure that he has done the training necessary,
- 10:37SPEAKER_00: but I'm curious to see how he'll do at a sharp event.
- 10:40It sounds like he probably would have gone top five last year
- 10:42if he didn't have
- 10:43SPEAKER_00: some nutrition issues.
- 10:44I heard him talking about it on the Free Outside podcast with
- 10:48Jeff Garmeyer.
- 10:49SPEAKER_00: And he was mentioning, I think he missed a drop.
- 10:52bag or missed some nutrition he kind of fell off at the end of
- 10:55the race last year
- 10:57still got eighth place i did not know that um so he knows the
- 11:00course uh knows what
- 11:01it takes to succeed i could very easily see him going top five
- 11:05at this race and
- 11:07he's been a really really smart racer so i'm excited to see him
- 11:10up there mixing it
- 11:11up up front um and i'm going in order of index for right now
- 11:15and then i'll kind of
- 11:16SPEAKER_00: jump around eventually um so second on
- 11:21internet decks i'm looking at mr chris myers chris myers got
- 11:26third in black canyon
- 11:2750k just recently and then obviously coming off a really big
- 11:31and impressive last
- 11:32year with the third place at black canyon 10th place at western
- 11:37with a 15 18 and i
- 11:40SPEAKER_00: think he raced ccc as well if i'm not mistaken
- 11:45SPEAKER_00: Western States, Mammoth, Trailfest, 50K.
- 11:50SPEAKER_00: And I thought he raced ACC as well.
- 11:53SPEAKER_00: But anyways,
- 11:54SPEAKER_00: Chris Myers,
- 11:56SPEAKER_00: he's pretty killer when it comes to these fast 50Ks,
- 12:00SPEAKER_00: whether they're technical or not.
- 12:02um so curious to see how he races uh yeah he has a lot of
- 12:07really good results in
- 12:0850ks throughout uh his racing career so last year uh this year
- 12:13black and your 50k
- 12:14sorry third place last year he won gorge uh and then got third
- 12:18at black and 100k
- 12:20SPEAKER_00: and then previous events um
- 12:24broken arrow he's got fourth way too cool he's got a top 10 so
- 12:29um chris myers i
- 12:29think is pretty much a lock for your top five um and it kind of
- 12:34depends on where
- 12:35you want to put him and i think he's got a really strong chance
- 12:37to win as right now
- 12:37i haven't picked a win as well uh going through carl augustine
- 12:42squamish british
- 12:43columbia he has some good results in canadian races hasn't
- 12:46raced a ton recently and
- 12:48SPEAKER_00: um
- 12:51SPEAKER_00: Best results recently have been the Squamish 15-mile there.
- 12:53SPEAKER_00: In 2023, he got first.
- 12:54SPEAKER_00: Did a little bit of Skyracing last year.
- 12:56SPEAKER_00: Skyraced in Mathazine, which was a really technical, short, steep race.
- 13:00SPEAKER_00: Got 38th.
- 13:01SPEAKER_00: And then Gorgeous Dutarn, another Skyrace, 17th.
- 13:05SPEAKER_00: So kind of that short, fast VO2 max.
- 13:07As recently as 2022,
- 13:08he went 244 at Sears and all,
- 13:11which is a really impressive time.
- 13:12SPEAKER_00: And he got six at the Minotaur Skyrace.
- 13:15SPEAKER_00: So he's kind of more race to international events.
- 13:17SPEAKER_00: I'll be curious to see how he shakes out.
- 13:20SPEAKER_00: I've seen his name on some start lists here and there, but not a ton.
- 13:23SPEAKER_00: Next one we're looking at is Jackson Brill.
- 13:27mountain running sky running athlete member of team usa in the
- 13:30austrian world
- 13:31champs i believe 2023 uh got 30th overall he's gotten sixth in
- 13:36broken era at the
- 13:3752k sky race day mathazine another competitive one he went uh
- 13:41top 10 in 2021 and
- 13:44then um yeah he's just been racing in the sub ultra scene for a
- 13:47long time 2019 he
- 13:49SPEAKER_00: got to do a lot of sick racing marathon to mont blanc zagama
- 13:52uh and sierras and all that is like the summer the dream summer
- 13:56when it comes to uh
- 13:58trail racing he hasn't raced a lot recently uh nothing on utmb
- 14:01since 2023 and then
- 14:04ultra sign up let's see i know he did his uh his steens
- 14:08crossing with he did steens
- 14:11crossing with uh with max king i want to say it was last year
- 14:14maybe it was the end
- 14:15SPEAKER_00: of 23 um but kind of quite uh last year
- 14:18SPEAKER_00: Not as much on the racing calendar,
- 14:19SPEAKER_00: so curious to see where his fitness is at and how he'll do in this race.
- 14:24I think he's living in Bend,
- 14:25Oregon these days,
- 14:27originally from Boise,
- 14:28Idaho.
- 14:29He has a lot of very fast times on the segments in Boise and is
- 14:34a very entertaining
- 14:35SPEAKER_00: Strava follow,
- 14:36SPEAKER_00: at least used to be when he posted a lot.
- 14:37SPEAKER_00: He hasn't been posting as much recently.
- 14:39SPEAKER_00: Next one on the list we have is,
- 14:41SPEAKER_00: uh,
- 14:42SPEAKER_00: Mr.
- 14:42SPEAKER_00: Trayson Knopp from Alaska,
- 14:44SPEAKER_00: uh,
- 14:44SPEAKER_00: partners with,
- 14:46SPEAKER_00: uh,
- 14:46SPEAKER_00: Claire Rhodes.
- 14:47SPEAKER_00: They'll both be racing.
- 14:48SPEAKER_00: They tend to show up to races and race together.
- 14:51SPEAKER_00: Um, he is one of those, uh, group of two through four at JFK last year.
- 14:55SPEAKER_00: He took fourth place in 531,
- 14:57SPEAKER_00: uh,
- 14:58SPEAKER_00: raced at Broken Arrow 46K,
- 14:59SPEAKER_00: got 13,
- 15:00SPEAKER_00: and then just missed out on Black Canyon or that golden ticket.
- 15:03SPEAKER_00: He was one of the
- 15:04four through six or four through seven pack that was super
- 15:06duper tight um with
- 15:09craig hunt him and i can't remember who fifth place was right
- 15:13now um so uh he's a
- 15:15really experienced really consistent racer i think this race
- 15:19suits his type of
- 15:20running uh it's very similar in my experience to some of the
- 15:23running that's or
- 15:24excuse me i've done some of the running in anchorage and it's
- 15:26very technical and i
- 15:27SPEAKER_00: think it suits him well i also think he has extremely good speed
- 15:30SPEAKER_00: If you run 531 at JFK, that is a stupidly fast time.
- 15:34SPEAKER_00: I think he's a pretty safe lock for 3-6 as well.
- 15:38SPEAKER_00: Continuing down the list, Chris Balistrani from British Columbia.
- 15:43SPEAKER_00: He's got second at Squamish 50 miler last year.
- 15:45SPEAKER_00: And then Broken Arrow 46k, he got 14th.
- 15:49SPEAKER_00: And Broken Arrow was really, really stacked last year.
- 15:52SPEAKER_00: So I think he's definitely somebody to watch.
- 15:54SPEAKER_00: I don't know that I would guarantee he's going to go top 10,
- 15:57SPEAKER_00: but I think that he might be a little bit of a dark horse potentially.
- 16:01SPEAKER_00: Next on the list, you have Free Trail's very own Mr. Debo Dylan Bowman.
- 16:06SPEAKER_00: Curious to see where his fitness is at.
- 16:08SPEAKER_00: I did not see his time at Terra Awera.
- 16:12and I don't recall if he was over or under the amount of
- 16:15handicap that Hayden gave
- 16:19SPEAKER_00: him or that they agreed on.
- 16:20I think it was 45 minutes,
- 16:20and I think he was a little bit over it,
- 16:21if I'm not mistaken.
- 16:22SPEAKER_00: Next one's going to be Matt Seidel.
- 16:25SPEAKER_00: He is in that pack of
- 16:27SPEAKER_00: Racers that I talked about at JFK going two through four,
- 16:31SPEAKER_00: he went third at JFK last year in a 529,
- 16:35SPEAKER_00: so sub 530.
- 16:36SPEAKER_00: He's running for Norda these days, if I'm not mistaken.
- 16:39SPEAKER_00: I'm pretty sure he ran in the 005s at JFK.
- 16:44SPEAKER_00: And just a super speedy, super talented guy.
- 16:48SPEAKER_00: He has had some really good results.
- 16:52SPEAKER_00: Went eighth overall at Canyons last year.
- 16:54Black Canyon,
- 16:55he came out stupidly hard in the banana shirt and ended up
- 16:58finishing 19th.
- 16:58SPEAKER_00: So he still hung on, but it was not nearly as fast as that first half.
- 17:03SPEAKER_00: And then he's had other good results.
- 17:06SPEAKER_00: Lake Sonoma, when it was the U.S.
- 17:07SPEAKER_00: Champs, he went eighth overall.
- 17:09SPEAKER_00: Canyon's 50K in 2023, he went fourth overall.
- 17:12SPEAKER_00: He's gone fourth at JFK, and he's also won Lake Sonoma as well.
- 17:17SPEAKER_00: So curious to see where his fitness is at, I mean, his last race.
- 17:21Matt Seidel has actually also signed up for Gorge Waterfall,
- 17:24so this should be a nice tune-up.
- 17:26SPEAKER_00: leading up to that.
- 17:28SPEAKER_00: But Matt said, I'll already somebody to watch.
- 17:30SPEAKER_00: And then I'll go for one or two more.
- 17:34SPEAKER_00: Casey and Campbell,
- 17:36SPEAKER_00: speedy guy,
- 17:37SPEAKER_00: more of the sub-ultra stuff,
- 17:39SPEAKER_00: but did get second at formidable 50K.
- 17:43SPEAKER_00: Two, was it Hans Troyer?
- 17:44SPEAKER_00: No, Josh Park, unfamiliar with that name.
- 17:48SPEAKER_00: And a 343.
- 17:48SPEAKER_00: So speedy sub-ultra guy.
- 17:48SPEAKER_00: He's also gone...
- 17:53SPEAKER_00: Eighth at breakneck last year, and then 19th at Mammoth Trail Fest.
- 17:59SPEAKER_00: He has gone eighth at the up-down at Sunapee when it was a U.S.
- 18:03SPEAKER_00: Champs qualifier, so I recognize his name from there.
- 18:05SPEAKER_00: And he went 11th at the Sunapee vertical, also when it was the U.S.
- 18:08SPEAKER_00: Champs qualifier.
- 18:09SPEAKER_00: Curious to see where he is at.
- 18:12SPEAKER_00: He's a very fast guy, and I think he could do very well.
- 18:16SPEAKER_00: He just doesn't race as long as 50K a ton.
- 18:19SPEAKER_00: But with that being said, I mean, that second place at formidable in 343,
- 18:23SPEAKER_00: It seems like a pretty good tune-up coming into this race,
- 18:26SPEAKER_00: and that's just as recently as a month or so ago.
- 18:28SPEAKER_00: So definitely somebody to keep an eye on.
- 18:30SPEAKER_00: I think he's a potential dark horse.
- 18:33SPEAKER_00: And if I'm not mistaken, I feel like he's either made U.S.
- 18:35SPEAKER_00: teams or he's always been right on the cusp.
- 18:36SPEAKER_00: He goes for a lot of those U.S.
- 18:38mountain running qualifiers and is often mixing it up there up
- 18:42front with the big dogs.
- 18:44So next one,
- 18:47and I think this is somebody who's really on the up and up when
- 18:49it comes to racing.
- 18:51SPEAKER_00: And I think they have a very good race ahead of them.
- 18:54SPEAKER_00: And that is Mr. Ryan Sullivan.
- 18:58SPEAKER_00: He first came on my radar.
- 19:00Last year,
- 19:00I raced a 50K,
- 19:01a little local 50K that Aravipa puts on called the North Fork 50K.
- 19:06SPEAKER_00: He raced it and he ran like a 342.
- 19:09SPEAKER_00: So that's a 50K with like 3,000 feet of vert,
- 19:10SPEAKER_00: all of it between 7,000 and 9,000 or 6,000 and 8,000.
- 19:18SPEAKER_00: And I mean, he just speed ran it for him in the front, no competition.
- 19:22SPEAKER_00: And I had to do some research.
- 19:25And then I saw,
- 19:26oh,
- 19:26his previous year,
- 19:27JFK in 2023,
- 19:28went 540 for third place overall.
- 19:30SPEAKER_00: He's won the San Juan Solstice 50 miler.
- 19:34SPEAKER_00: He got seventh at Lake Sonoma.
- 19:35SPEAKER_00: The year was the U.S.
- 19:36SPEAKER_00: qualifier in 2023.
- 19:38SPEAKER_00: Multiple top fives and really good times at JFK.
- 19:41SPEAKER_00: So he's really experienced here.
- 19:43And then looking at last year,
- 19:44I mean,
- 19:45he had a really amazing year last year too.
- 19:47So North Fork,
- 19:48and then he came into Leadville,
- 19:49got third,
- 19:50or excuse me,
- 19:52fourth in 1721.
- 19:55SPEAKER_00: So an amazing time.
- 19:56Most years that'll definitely get you top three,
- 19:58if not win a lot of years.
- 19:59SPEAKER_00: Won the Blue Sky Marathon in 306,
- 20:02SPEAKER_00: and then went out and did JFK in 527 for second overall,
- 20:05SPEAKER_00: only behind a course record from David Sinclair.
- 20:09SPEAKER_00: So really, he's been a really, really impressive racer.
- 20:13SPEAKER_00: What's even cooler is that North Fork,
- 20:15SPEAKER_00: after he broke the course record,
- 20:17SPEAKER_00: he was hanging out,
- 20:17and he was the first one to say congratulations when everyone
- 20:20was crossing the
- 20:20SPEAKER_00: finish line,
- 20:21SPEAKER_00: giving out high fives,
- 20:22SPEAKER_00: giving out Stoke.
- 20:24SPEAKER_00: So you just can't beat that.
- 20:26SPEAKER_00: That's part of what's super cool in the trail community.
- 20:29SPEAKER_00: He made a friend and a fan in me, and I will be rooting for him.
- 20:32SPEAKER_00: I also think he has the chance to win this race,
- 20:35SPEAKER_00: and if not,
- 20:36SPEAKER_00: I think I see him strongly in the top three.
- 20:38SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 20:40SPEAKER_00: So definitely somebody I'll be rooting for.
- 20:42SPEAKER_00: Speaking of other people I'll be rooting for,
- 20:44SPEAKER_00: Mr.
- 20:45SPEAKER_00: Gus Gibbs,
- 20:46SPEAKER_00: Boise's very own Gus Gibbs,
- 20:49SPEAKER_00: will be racing Chuckanut.
- 20:50SPEAKER_00: And if I'm not mistaken, I don't think he has ever raced Chuckanut.
- 20:54SPEAKER_00: I'm super excited for him.
- 20:56SPEAKER_00: He has also recently announced that he's going to race Cannons 100K,
- 21:02SPEAKER_00: which he has raced before,
- 21:03SPEAKER_00: I think back in 2022.
- 21:05Boise Calgill did an amazing thing and essentially got him a
- 21:08charity bib on the
- 21:10SPEAKER_00: most recent free trail podcast,
- 21:12SPEAKER_00: the recovery day or rest day,
- 21:13SPEAKER_00: whatever they're calling it.
- 21:15SPEAKER_00: Corinne talked a little bit about this,
- 21:16about how UTMB for whatever reason is being kind of stingy with
- 21:20the elite bibs at Canyons,
- 21:22SPEAKER_00: which doesn't really seem to make a lot of sense to me.
- 21:25SPEAKER_00: So instead,
- 21:26Gus had to get a charity bib and Boise Calgill helped him to
- 21:30raise money for that
- 21:31SPEAKER_00: charity bib in order for him to go to Canyons.
- 21:35SPEAKER_00: Super excited to see Gus Gus is I am personally biased.
- 21:40SPEAKER_00: He is a good friend of mine.
- 21:42He is an amazing human being who will literally give you the
- 21:45shirt off his back and
- 21:46SPEAKER_00: do just about anything for you.
- 21:48SPEAKER_00: And it's pretty awesome.
- 21:49SPEAKER_00: If you haven't already heard Chris Myers is interview on free trail.
- 21:53SPEAKER_00: uh,
- 21:53SPEAKER_00: when Debo asked him who he admires,
- 21:55SPEAKER_00: Gus is,
- 21:56SPEAKER_00: uh,
- 21:56SPEAKER_00: listed and he kind of goes into just the type of person Gus is.
- 22:00I thought he really did an amazing job of capturing how special
- 22:03of a guy Gus is.
- 22:05SPEAKER_00: And just, um, and just, um,
- 22:08yeah,
- 22:08portraying him in the light that I think a lot of people will
- 22:10see him in.
- 22:11SPEAKER_00: He's really a fixture of the Boise running community.
- 22:13SPEAKER_00: He will literally give you the shirt off his back.
- 22:15He's given me the jacket and clothing off his back before when
- 22:19I didn't bring
- 22:20enough warm clothes in the summer in Sun Valley and it snowed
- 22:23all of a sudden in July.
- 22:25SPEAKER_00: But anyways, I digress.
- 22:28SPEAKER_00: Gus has only two races last year where Lake Sonoma,
- 22:32SPEAKER_00: or excuse me,
- 22:32SPEAKER_00: he did three races last year,
- 22:33SPEAKER_00: but all in the early season.
- 22:35um he did big all to 50k inaugural inaugural big all to 50k he
- 22:38got sixth place um
- 22:40just outside of that top five by maybe five minutes behind
- 22:44david laney um and then
- 22:47SPEAKER_00: he raced lake sonoma marathon got second and
- 22:52SPEAKER_00: Scout Mountain Ultras, he got third in the 50K.
- 22:55SPEAKER_00: So be curious to see Gus Gus Race.
- 23:00SPEAKER_00: I'll be rooting for him.
- 23:01SPEAKER_00: I think I see him pretty solidly in a 5 through 10 slot.
- 23:04SPEAKER_00: He's been really consistent.
- 23:05SPEAKER_00: I haven't been keeping up if he has been programming a lot of workouts.
- 23:09He definitely has been getting the mileage and the distance,
- 23:11so I see no issues with him.
- 23:13SPEAKER_00: in the back half of the race.
- 23:14SPEAKER_00: Uh,
- 23:15SPEAKER_00: if I'm not mistaken,
- 23:15he's started a run streak in December and has been keeping it
- 23:19going for the four months,
- 23:21SPEAKER_00: first three months of the year,
- 23:22SPEAKER_00: give or take.
- 23:22SPEAKER_00: So,
- 23:23SPEAKER_00: uh,
- 23:23SPEAKER_00: be curious to see where Gus Gus is at and I will be rooting for him,
- 23:27SPEAKER_00: uh,
- 23:28SPEAKER_00: forever and always,
- 23:29SPEAKER_00: um,
- 23:30SPEAKER_00: because I'm biased.
- 23:32SPEAKER_00: And so that's kind of where that's at.
- 23:35SPEAKER_00: Um, other names to watch Ryan Smith.
- 23:37SPEAKER_00: He's gone top 10 as recently as 2022.
- 23:38SPEAKER_00: Um,
- 23:40SPEAKER_00: He's kind of a local legend in Boulder.
- 23:41He's been in the ultra scene for a long time,
- 23:44but hasn't raced a lot recently.
- 23:46SPEAKER_00: So curious where his fitness is at.
- 23:48SPEAKER_00: And then Andrew Rylarsdom,
- 23:51SPEAKER_00: he got third at Gorge Waterfalls 30K last year behind Liam,
- 23:59SPEAKER_00: Miro,
- 23:59SPEAKER_00: and Matt Daniels.
- 24:02SPEAKER_00: And he's also raced Mammoth 26K, Tamal Pie Headlands 50K,
- 24:07SPEAKER_00: Weiss trail fist and breakneck points,
- 24:10SPEAKER_00: 21 K.
- 24:11So he raced the half marathon trail champs and got six last
- 24:15year behind some really
- 24:17SPEAKER_00: fast dudes.
- 24:17SPEAKER_00: So I could see him being in the top 10 somewhere as well.
- 24:21SPEAKER_00: Um, hasn't, doesn't have quite as many 50 Ks on the list.
- 24:24Um,
- 24:25but it's not a huge step up and I could see him being in that
- 24:28top 10 as well.
- 24:29So that kind of concludes,
- 24:31uh,
- 24:31the male side of the race,
- 24:33um,
- 24:34for my male picks for top five.
- 24:37SPEAKER_00: Once again,
- 24:37SPEAKER_00: I am liable to change this any minute and likely,
- 24:41SPEAKER_00: uh,
- 24:41SPEAKER_00: we'll change it 20 times before the picks are final this weekend.
- 24:45SPEAKER_00: Um, looking at my men's top five picks, um,
- 24:49SPEAKER_00: And first,
- 24:51SPEAKER_00: I've got Mr.
- 24:52SPEAKER_00: Chris Myers in his new Brooks kit,
- 24:56SPEAKER_00: racing a strategic and smart race,
- 24:59SPEAKER_00: sticking with the lead pack and then making some late moves.
- 25:03SPEAKER_00: So I got Chris Myers in first, got Mr. Will Murray in second.
- 25:07SPEAKER_00: I cannot emphasize enough this guy.
- 25:11SPEAKER_00: is really has an awesome outlook on, uh, on running.
- 25:15SPEAKER_00: I think I mentioned in my last podcast,
- 25:16but if you haven't go look at his Strava post from his black
- 25:19Canyon result,
- 25:20SPEAKER_00: it really does an amazing job of chronicling,
- 25:22SPEAKER_00: uh,
- 25:23SPEAKER_00: his lead up to black Canyon,
- 25:24SPEAKER_00: his philosophy going into it.
- 25:26SPEAKER_00: Um,
- 25:27SPEAKER_00: and then on top of that too,
- 25:28SPEAKER_00: I guess his interview with Jeff Garmire on the free outside,
- 25:30SPEAKER_00: um,
- 25:31SPEAKER_00: also did a good job how he kind of makes more,
- 25:33SPEAKER_00: uh,
- 25:34SPEAKER_00: rather than results.
- 25:35SPEAKER_00: Um,
- 25:36SPEAKER_00: excuse me, the results-based goals or results-based outcome-based goals.
- 25:39SPEAKER_00: He kind of makes process-based ones.
- 25:41SPEAKER_00: I know it sounds really simplistic,
- 25:42SPEAKER_00: but the way he talks about it in Strava post and in that interview,
- 25:45SPEAKER_00: I think really goes into depth.
- 25:47And I think he's got a really good nuanced head on his
- 25:49shoulders and is kind of
- 25:51SPEAKER_00: experienced beyond his
- 25:53actual level of experience in ultra racing since he's only been
- 25:55doing it for a couple of years.
- 25:57SPEAKER_00: He's got a much more advanced view on doing it.
- 25:59SPEAKER_00: Anyways, I think he is pretty solidly fit.
- 26:03Also looking at his Strava,
- 26:04it looks like he has began getting coached by somebody at CTS.
- 26:08He didn't put any names,
- 26:09but if you look at a Strava,
- 26:10it says coached by CTS.
- 26:11SPEAKER_00: So I'm curious what that means if he's coaching,
- 26:14if he's getting coached by Coop or somebody else at CTS and how
- 26:17that's changing his philosophy.
- 26:19SPEAKER_00: Cause he had a pretty
- 26:20SPEAKER_00: a pretty level head.
- 26:23SPEAKER_00: And he had a pretty good philosophy about how he approached his training.
- 26:27SPEAKER_00: And I really liked it.
- 26:27SPEAKER_00: And it's always cool to hear from athletes that are self
- 26:30trained how they choose to do that so anyways first place chris
- 26:34myers second place
- 26:35will murray third place i'm looking at matt sidell but i might
- 26:38swap i think i'll
- 26:39probably move ryan sullivan up in that spot um now i'm looking
- 26:43at matt sidell's
- 26:44results um kind of leaning a little bit more towards uh ryan
- 26:48sullivan but could go
- 26:49either way so third and fourth uh matt sidell ryan sullivan and
- 26:52fifth place tracen
- 26:54SPEAKER_00: not coming off of an alaska winter in which he probably is
- 26:58SPEAKER_00: uh,
- 26:59SPEAKER_00: sharp and fast,
- 27:00but maybe hasn't done as much running as some of these other
- 27:02people in the lower 48.
- 27:05SPEAKER_00: So that covers the men's side.
- 27:06SPEAKER_00: Once again,
- 27:07SPEAKER_00: I got Chris Myers in first,
- 27:08SPEAKER_00: second,
- 27:09SPEAKER_00: Will Murray,
- 27:10SPEAKER_00: third,
- 27:10SPEAKER_00: Ryan Sullivan,
- 27:11SPEAKER_00: fourth,
- 27:12SPEAKER_00: Matt Seidel in fifth,
- 27:13SPEAKER_00: Trace and Knopp.
- 27:14Looking at people on the bubble,
- 27:15I think Casey Campbell is a strong lock for four through eight.
- 27:19SPEAKER_00: I think that, I think Mr. Gus Gibbs will be in the top 10.
- 27:25SPEAKER_00: I think Andrew Reilersdom is a strong choice.
- 27:29SPEAKER_00: And I think...
- 27:33SPEAKER_00: Uh, that's probably who I'm leaning towards.
- 27:36SPEAKER_00: Yeah,
- 27:36SPEAKER_00: that's probably who I'm leaning towards,
- 27:38SPEAKER_00: um,
- 27:40SPEAKER_00: as point getters on the men's side of the race.
- 27:44SPEAKER_00: Uh,
- 27:44SPEAKER_00: going over to the female side of the race,
- 27:47SPEAKER_00: um,
- 27:47SPEAKER_00: and looking at the female,
- 27:49SPEAKER_00: just listening to the names off the top.
- 27:51Uh,
- 27:51so Jasmine Louther,
- 27:52Sarah Beal,
- 27:53Clara Rhodes,
- 27:54Jade Bellsberg,
- 27:55Addie Bracey,
- 27:55Claire DeVoe,
- 27:56SPEAKER_00: Sarah Carter, Jenny Quilty, Stephanie Ryle, and Barrett Gray.
- 28:02SPEAKER_00: So looking at the women's race,
- 28:05I think there's probably two or three heavy hitters that have
- 28:10the potential to win
- 28:11SPEAKER_00: this race.
- 28:13SPEAKER_00: And I think those three people are Jasmine Lother.
- 28:17SPEAKER_00: I think she's probably my favorite.
- 28:19SPEAKER_00: I think Claire Rhodes has been really coming into form.
- 28:23And her result at the rut last year was extremely impressive in
- 28:28my eyes with the
- 28:29SPEAKER_00: win in the course record.
- 28:31Yeah,
- 28:31winning the course record pretty decisively in a competitive
- 28:35field as well,
- 28:36nonetheless.
- 28:37SPEAKER_00: So Claire Rhodes,
- 28:42SPEAKER_00: Jasmine Lothar,
- 28:42SPEAKER_00: and I think Claire DeVoe,
- 28:44SPEAKER_00: the returning champion who's already proved that she can win this race,
- 28:47I think they are going to be the three big dogs up front
- 28:50competing for the win.
- 28:52SPEAKER_00: I think Sarah Beal has the fitness to win this race,
- 28:57SPEAKER_00: but some kind of up and down racing in her history.
- 29:00SPEAKER_00: So that makes me a little bit hesitant to pick her as somebody who...
- 29:06SPEAKER_00: as somebody who is going to win the race per se.
- 29:11SPEAKER_00: So,
- 29:12SPEAKER_00: um,
- 29:13SPEAKER_00: anyways,
- 29:13SPEAKER_00: going into the individual athletes and the results,
- 29:16SPEAKER_00: uh,
- 29:16SPEAKER_00: Jasmine Lother,
- 29:17SPEAKER_00: Jasmine Lother came off one heck of a year last year,
- 29:21SPEAKER_00: uh,
- 29:22SPEAKER_00: winning basically a ton of really big mountain,
- 29:24SPEAKER_00: uh,
- 29:25SPEAKER_00: mostly 50 Ks.
- 29:25SPEAKER_00: Um, but yeah,
- 29:28uh mountain 50k so looking at her results from 2024 she got
- 29:32speed goat she got the
- 29:33win at in a competitive stack field and a really good time for
- 29:36speed goat 615 i
- 29:36think she's probably only about five ish minutes off the course
- 29:39record i'm pretty
- 29:40sure it's around 610 for the females she competed at ccc but
- 29:44dnf'd and then ultra
- 29:45trail cape town she took the win at and if i'm not mistaken i
- 29:50thought she had one
- 29:51SPEAKER_00: more mountain ultra on there let me double check
- 29:55But yeah,
- 29:56Jasmine Lothar recently signed with Arc'teryx,
- 29:57formerly a North Face athlete.
- 30:00SPEAKER_00: Excited to see her racing that new Arc'teryx kit.
- 30:02Yeah,
- 30:03she got second at Run the Rout to Clara Rhodes,
- 30:05also in,
- 30:05of course,
- 30:05record time.
- 30:07SPEAKER_00: So all three of the top three females that run the rut went on their
- 30:10jen lector's course record so that was uh claire jasmine and um
- 30:16hannah all good so
- 30:18yeah i mean she just had a killer year last year uh and is in
- 30:22really good shape for
- 30:23these type of mountain races she also has a second place at uh
- 30:28she has a second
- 30:28place at chuck a nut from 2023 if i'm not mistaken uh 2023
- 30:31chuck and uh no excuse
- 30:32SPEAKER_00: me 2022
- 30:40SPEAKER_00: 2022 Choconut.
- 30:42So she's got experience on this race,
- 30:45knows the course,
- 30:46knows what it takes to do well.
- 30:48SPEAKER_00: I think she's got a strong chance to win.
- 30:49SPEAKER_00: I think her fitness is looking really, really good.
- 30:51SPEAKER_00: Claire Rhodes, all the same reasons that I just mentioned.
- 30:55SPEAKER_00: She's super good at these type of races.
- 30:57She set the course record last year,
- 31:00got second at Broken Arrow,
- 31:0246K,
- 31:03and second at Kodiak.
- 31:04SPEAKER_00: Went over to OCC, didn't have the day she wanted.
- 31:06SPEAKER_00: And she also got second at the Big Alt at 28K, actually.
- 31:09SPEAKER_00: Um, went over to OCC, didn't quite have the day that she wanted.
- 31:12SPEAKER_00: Uh,
- 31:12SPEAKER_00: but,
- 31:14SPEAKER_00: um,
- 31:15SPEAKER_00: she's really both,
- 31:16SPEAKER_00: both her and her partner,
- 31:17SPEAKER_00: uh,
- 31:18are really good and really can trace in are really good and
- 31:21really consistent racers.
- 31:23Uh,
- 31:23and I respect that and am impressed by their racing results,
- 31:28um,
- 31:29consistently.
- 31:29SPEAKER_00: So I'll be cheering for both of them.
- 31:31I think people from Alaska are,
- 31:32are tough and hardy breed looking at Sarah Beal.
- 31:35SPEAKER_00: Uh, she has, um,
- 31:38um let's see most recently results dead horse ultra 50 miler
- 31:42first place pike's
- 31:43peak marathon she got second last year uh tamal pie headlands
- 31:47third place quad rock
- 31:4925 fourth place and gorge waterfalls uh she got first um and so
- 31:55i think she's got a
- 31:57SPEAKER_00: really good chance for a former jfk winner former
- 32:01uh what else does she want yeah former JFK winner um so she's
- 32:06got that leg speed um
- 32:07I don't always think of her as a more or the most technical
- 32:11runner but she
- 32:12definitely has that really superior leg speed um and let me see
- 32:17if she has any UTMB
- 32:18results I'm missing Gorge 50k from last year Black Canons DNF
- 32:22from last year
- 32:23SPEAKER_00: Javelina DNF so that's the big thing I'm hesitant about
- 32:27SPEAKER_00: Just looking at her most recent UTMB results.
- 32:29SPEAKER_00: So Black Canyon 2024 DNF, Javelina 2023 DNF, Black Canyon 2023 DNF.
- 32:32SPEAKER_00: So she is super fast.
- 32:32SPEAKER_00: And if she finishes, she...
- 32:43SPEAKER_00: is typically going to be in top five in any race that she races in.
- 32:46SPEAKER_00: The only thing I hesitate with is that she tends to DNF.
- 32:50SPEAKER_00: I don't know if she DNF Chuck or not because it's a shorter event,
- 32:52SPEAKER_00: but she tends to DNF some of the longer,
- 32:53SPEAKER_00: more competitive stuff.
- 32:54SPEAKER_00: So it makes me a little hesitant to pick her for a win.
- 32:59SPEAKER_00: And that's Sarah Biel that we're talking about.
- 33:03SPEAKER_00: Next racer on the list is going to be Jade Bellsberg.
- 33:07SPEAKER_00: Jade,
- 33:08SPEAKER_00: Canadian athlete,
- 33:10SPEAKER_00: made the Canadian mountain running team at least one,
- 33:12SPEAKER_00: if not two,
- 33:13SPEAKER_00: the past world championship years.
- 33:16SPEAKER_00: Last year, she got third or fourth place at Chuckanut.
- 33:21um and she's coming over with nicodemus de la rosa her partner
- 33:24um former barclay
- 33:26marathon finisher which is pretty awesome um last year jade
- 33:30raced and she got
- 33:32SPEAKER_00: second place excuse me second place behind clear to though um
- 33:35SPEAKER_00: Jade has some really good speed, and she has really good range.
- 33:37SPEAKER_00: She can kind of race long and short stuff, and I was surprised.
- 33:40SPEAKER_00: I thought of her as more of an ultra runner,
- 33:44SPEAKER_00: but she raced some really short,
- 33:46SPEAKER_00: fast stuff and did really,
- 33:47SPEAKER_00: really good last year.
- 33:48SPEAKER_00: Looking at last year, she did a White East Trail Fest, got first.
- 33:52SPEAKER_00: Broken Arrow Skyrace, 23K, second place.
- 33:54SPEAKER_00: Broken Arrow VK, ninth place.
- 33:57Uh,
- 33:58she got,
- 33:58she raised canyons and got ninth and a hundred K checking out
- 34:01second place.
- 34:03SPEAKER_00: Um, so I thought of her as more of a long ultra distance runner.
- 34:07SPEAKER_00: And I think she even made a comment about it or post about it too.
- 34:11But coming back in these short and fast races,
- 34:12like she really smoked it last year.
- 34:14Um,
- 34:14and I think she is a pretty solid block for top,
- 34:19top five,
- 34:20if not top three.
- 34:22SPEAKER_00: Um, I think she has the potential to win this race.
- 34:23SPEAKER_00: I just don't know.
- 34:24SPEAKER_00: I don't know that I put her
- 34:27white up there with jasmine claire and claire roads and claire
- 34:31de vogue excuse me
- 34:32so that's three people uh two different claires i didn't i
- 34:34didn't think about that
- 34:36but i think that jade i actually probably will go back on my on
- 34:38my ward and i think
- 34:39jade could legitimately win this race um so i wouldn't be
- 34:42surprised at all she's a
- 34:43solid pick for top five i think she will 100 get points and
- 34:47yeah and just a cool
- 34:49racer she also has a Substack that i subscribe to um and read
- 34:53and would recommend uh
- 34:55SPEAKER_00: i like her writing it's enjoyable and
- 34:57SPEAKER_00: And we definitely recommend supporting her on that front.
- 34:59SPEAKER_00: Next one on the list is going to be Addie Bracey for Nike Trail Athlete,
- 35:05SPEAKER_00: has been in the ultra running space for quite some time.
- 35:08SPEAKER_00: Looking at Addie's results most recently,
- 35:11SPEAKER_00: she raced,
- 35:12I did not know she raced UTMB the full distance last year and
- 35:16got 27th in 30 hours.
- 35:19SPEAKER_00: She raced at Canyons 100K last year, 14th, chucking up 50K last year.
- 35:26SPEAKER_00: Yeah, Choconaut 50K last year got sixth place.
- 35:30SPEAKER_00: And then CCC the year before, Speed Goat, Kanon's 100K.
- 35:36SPEAKER_00: So curious to see.
- 35:37She still had some good results as recently as 2023 with her
- 35:41third place at Speed Goat,
- 35:42SPEAKER_00: her fifth place at Kanon's 100K,
- 35:45SPEAKER_00: and then the year before her first place at Speed Goat.
- 35:48SPEAKER_00: So yeah, curious to see where Addy Bracey's Fitness is at.
- 35:55SPEAKER_00: Still, I mean, Addy's been in the sport for a really long time.
- 35:58SPEAKER_00: Definitely a super well-respected name and somebody to look out for.
- 36:03You know,
- 36:04went top 10 at Chuckanut,
- 36:06won sixth place at Chuckanut last year.
- 36:07SPEAKER_00: So also won Tushers, 70K, and yeah, not missing anything else.
- 36:14SPEAKER_00: So Addy Bracey, somebody to look out for.
- 36:16SPEAKER_00: I think Addy could easily be in that 5-10 spot.
- 36:18SPEAKER_00: I don't know.
- 36:20SPEAKER_00: Um,
- 36:20SPEAKER_00: if I see Addy going in the top five,
- 36:22SPEAKER_00: next one is Claire Deveau,
- 36:23SPEAKER_00: a previous winner of Chuckanut,
- 36:26SPEAKER_00: uh,
- 36:26SPEAKER_00: won it last year in four 13,
- 36:28SPEAKER_00: and then also followed it up with a gorge 30 case sec third place rather.
- 36:33SPEAKER_00: Uh, and then didn't really race for the rest of the year.
- 36:35So I think she's coming over from a collegiate running background,
- 36:39if I'm not mistaken.
- 36:39SPEAKER_00: Um,
- 36:40SPEAKER_00: So she's got that leg speed,
- 36:43SPEAKER_00: is real fast,
- 36:44SPEAKER_00: and we'll be curious to see if she can repeat the win.
- 36:48SPEAKER_00: Some other names to look out for on the female side.
- 36:51SPEAKER_00: I think Sarah Carter, Jenny Quilty, and Barrett Gray.
- 36:56SPEAKER_00: Um, are all people worth mentioning?
- 36:57SPEAKER_00: So Sarah Carter athlete from Boulder.
- 37:00SPEAKER_00: Uh,
- 37:01SPEAKER_00: she had some good results last year,
- 37:03SPEAKER_00: uh,
- 37:03SPEAKER_00: younger 26 and looking at her 2024 in order broken arrow VK 15th.
- 37:09SPEAKER_00: Uh,
- 37:10SPEAKER_00: so stacked field over there,
- 37:11SPEAKER_00: super competitive broken arrow,
- 37:13SPEAKER_00: 23 K nine place of top 10 over there.
- 37:15uh and then her other two races she basically only raced super
- 37:18duper competitive uh
- 37:19headlands 27k so that was a golden trail event you'll remember
- 37:2314th place which
- 37:23doesn't sound like much but when you're talking about golden
- 37:25trail world series
- 37:2614th place in that stack of the field pretty impressive at age
- 37:2925 and then also
- 37:30SPEAKER_00: mammoth 26k elevation didn't do quite as well 23rd place over there
- 37:34SPEAKER_00: So she basically picked the four most competitive sub ultra,
- 37:39SPEAKER_00: uh,
- 37:39SPEAKER_00: events in the U S on the trail and,
- 37:41SPEAKER_00: uh,
- 37:42SPEAKER_00: kudos to her for sticking her nose in some really good competition,
- 37:44SPEAKER_00: uh,
- 37:45SPEAKER_00: and still,
- 37:46SPEAKER_00: and probably learning a lot and also still having really good results.
- 37:49SPEAKER_00: I mean,
- 37:49ninth at 20 of the broken arrow at the 23 K and 15th of the VK
- 37:52and 14th at headlands,
- 37:54SPEAKER_00: uh,
- 37:55SPEAKER_00: that race was blazing fast.
- 37:56SPEAKER_00: So I think Sarah Carter's a sleeper.
- 37:58SPEAKER_00: I think she could easily be
- 37:59in that top five I think she's a little dark horse I don't know
- 38:02if she's I'm not
- 38:03saying a little dark horse I think she's a dark horse you
- 38:04should watch um Jenny
- 38:06Quilty another one Canadian athlete for Norda um has gone just
- 38:12outside the top 10
- 38:13at Western States in 11th two years ago last year Jenny Quilty
- 38:17raced Black Canyon
- 38:1860k got fourth and Gorge 100k and got sixth so not as much
- 38:22racing I don't know if
- 38:23SPEAKER_00: she's bad from an injury um but curious to see how she does I could see
- 38:28SPEAKER_00: Her, she has raced Chuckanut in 2022 and got ninth place.
- 38:32SPEAKER_00: A lot of racing in BC and a lot of the BC events.
- 38:35SPEAKER_00: And then, yeah, a lot of racing in BC basically.
- 38:40So I'm curious to see where her fitness is at and how she's
- 38:42going to bounce back to form.
- 38:44SPEAKER_00: Those 005 Nordos look sweet.
- 38:46So maybe a little bit of an advantage racing in those really
- 38:50cool looking shoes.
- 38:51SPEAKER_00: Last one I mentioned, Barrett Gray.
- 38:52SPEAKER_00: She got seventh two years ago at Chuckanut.
- 38:55SPEAKER_00: And I think she's a recent signee from Brooks.
- 38:58SPEAKER_00: Um,
- 38:58SPEAKER_00: I think,
- 39:00SPEAKER_00: uh,
- 39:00SPEAKER_00: she knows the course,
- 39:01SPEAKER_00: uh,
- 39:01SPEAKER_00: could have some good results looking at her results last year from 2024.
- 39:04SPEAKER_00: Uh, so she, she raced, uh, run, Robert run and got third place.
- 39:09I'm pretty sure in front of Leah Yingling,
- 39:11which is really impressive in 2141.
- 39:12SPEAKER_00: She did a broken arrow 46 K and got eight, uh, Tillamook burn.
- 39:17SPEAKER_00: She got the win in the 50 K and yeah, 2043.
- 39:21SPEAKER_00: She got seventh at Chuck and not.
- 39:22SPEAKER_00: So
- 39:23SPEAKER_00: I think she's definitely somebody to watch.
- 39:25SPEAKER_00: Recent Brooks signee, really good results from last year, Broken Arrow.
- 39:29SPEAKER_00: I mean, 46K, top 10, that's looking real good.
- 39:32SPEAKER_00: I think she's somebody to look out for.
- 39:34I think her and Sarah Carter are somebody to look out for in
- 39:36that like 4th through 6th area.
- 39:39SPEAKER_00: So that covers up the female side.
- 39:41SPEAKER_00: On my female side, I think I am going with...
- 39:46SPEAKER_00: Jasmine Louther for the win.
- 39:49SPEAKER_00: Claire Rhodes in second place.
- 39:52SPEAKER_00: Claire DeVoe in third place.
- 39:54SPEAKER_00: Jade Bellsberg in fourth place.
- 39:55SPEAKER_00: And Sarah Beal in fifth place.
- 39:57SPEAKER_00: Once again, I'm subject to change.
- 39:59SPEAKER_00: People right on the bubble that I think are solid four through eight.
- 40:02SPEAKER_00: I think Sarah Carter will be up there.
- 40:05I think that Barrett Gray will be in that mix and potentially
- 40:11Addy Bracey as well.
- 40:12SPEAKER_00: So that covers the preview for Chuckanut 50K.
- 40:17SPEAKER_00: This is Tuesday, March 11th.
- 40:20SPEAKER_00: I'm hoping to get this out tonight.
- 40:22So that way you got plenty of time to ponder over your picks
- 40:25for Chuckanut 50K and
- 40:28SPEAKER_00: hopefully get a nice top 10 spot,
- 40:31SPEAKER_00: bump you back up,
- 40:32SPEAKER_00: bump you up.
- 40:34SPEAKER_00: on the leaderboard.
- 40:35SPEAKER_00: And hopefully I can get bumped into the top 10 on the leaderboard.
- 40:37SPEAKER_00: That'd be sweet.
- 40:39SPEAKER_00: Looking at the upcoming events, I'm super excited for the big Alta.
- 40:44SPEAKER_00: And also Chianti, I guess, is the same weekend as well.
- 40:46SPEAKER_00: Those are both going to be amazing races to talk about.
- 40:49SPEAKER_00: Chianti, I mean, if...
- 40:51SPEAKER_00: If Killian can make it,
- 40:52SPEAKER_00: you're looking at Killian,
- 40:54SPEAKER_00: Killian,
- 40:55SPEAKER_00: Jim,
- 40:55SPEAKER_00: Andreas Ryder,
- 40:57SPEAKER_00: Vincent Bouillard,
- 40:59SPEAKER_00: Zach Gardner.
- 41:00SPEAKER_00: Yeah, just all kinds of guys.
- 41:03SPEAKER_00: And then on the female side,
- 41:05SPEAKER_00: not quite as deep as our Garcia,
- 41:07SPEAKER_00: Abby Hall,
- 41:08SPEAKER_00: Fiona,
- 41:08SPEAKER_00: Pascal,
- 41:09SPEAKER_00: Lynn Chin is on the list.
- 41:10SPEAKER_00: But I feel like Lynn Chin's name was on every golden ticket race.
- 41:13SPEAKER_00: I don't know if they're actually be racing.
- 41:15uh,
- 41:15Fabioli Conti,
- 41:16Arroyo,
- 41:17Arroyo,
- 41:18Arroyo CO,
- 41:20um,
- 41:21and just a handful of other racers.
- 41:23Um,
- 41:24and then looking at the big Alta,
- 41:25I mean,
- 41:25the big Alta is going to be sweet.
- 41:26SPEAKER_00: I'm super excited.
- 41:28Um,
- 41:29that's guys mentioned me talking to Debo,
- 41:31uh,
- 41:31to try to talk about picks potentially.
- 41:33SPEAKER_00: Um, so we'll see if that pans out.
- 41:35SPEAKER_00: That'd be awesome.
- 41:35SPEAKER_00: If not, I don't really want to be pushy.
- 41:37SPEAKER_00: I'm not a pushy person.
- 41:38SPEAKER_00: Um, but that would be like a dream come true.
- 41:40SPEAKER_00: Looking at big Alta 50k, Mary Denholm, David Roach, Eli Hemming,
- 41:45SPEAKER_00: Sylvie Abel, Tabor Hemming, Ryan Becker, Keely Henniger, Preston Cates.
- 41:49SPEAKER_00: Haven't seen him in a while.
- 41:50Andrew Bumbelow,
- 41:51Elliot Cardin,
- 41:52Remy LaRue,
- 41:54Canyon Woodward,
- 41:55Brett Hornig,
- 41:56Lindsey Allison.
- 41:57SPEAKER_00: So the list goes on and on.
- 41:59SPEAKER_00: Super excited to preview those two.
- 42:01And I'll probably have to do a combo episode to get both of
- 42:05those out for next week.
- 42:08SPEAKER_00: So that's something to look forward to.
- 42:10SPEAKER_00: In the meantime, super excited to be back.
- 42:13SPEAKER_00: And talking about trail racing,
- 42:15SPEAKER_00: drop me your picks or anything that you think I got right or wrong.
- 42:19SPEAKER_00: Feel free to comment on Substack or any feedback possible.
- 42:24SPEAKER_00: And in the meantime, I look forward to the next one.
- 42:27SPEAKER_00: And thank you as always for listening.
- 42:30SPEAKER_00: See you.
