- 0:00Those may be the most chilling words in all of Scripture.
- 0:03The worst of all human conditions in this life is not
- 0:07poverty, sickness, loneliness, abuse, war, or cruelty, as awful
- 0:13as those conditions are. To be cut off from the presence
- 0:17of God is both the worst and most common of all human
- 0:22conditions, and there is no way out on our own.
- 0:27Spiritual death is always just a misstep away, and ere He is
- 0:33aware, He is left unto himself. We have all made mistakes.
- 0:39We all sin, we all fall short, and on our own we can do nothing
- 0:46to remedy that awful condition. Without God, death prevails.
- 1:07Hello and welcome back. I am Larry Corbridge and this is
- 1:13episode 8 of the Stand Forever series.
- 1:17In the last two episodes we considered chaos and darkness
- 1:21AS2 dimensions of the natural state of things which exist
- 1:27without God, without God's greatest gifts, His Son, His
- 1:32Spirit, and His life. Today we consider the third
- 1:37dimension of the natural state of things, death.
- 1:43Life as we know it begins with God, and without God death
- 1:48prevails. Whether we believe it or not,
- 1:52whether we acknowledge Him or not, we live and breathe by the
- 1:55grace of God. With each beat of our heart God
- 2:01put into man His Spirit, which is the breath of life, He said.
- 2:08And I, the Lord God, form man from the dust of the ground, and
- 2:12breathed into his nostrils the breath of life.
- 2:16And man became a living soul, the first flesh upon the earth,
- 2:21the first man also. Nevertheless, all things were
- 2:25before created, but spiritually were they created and my and
- 2:30made according to My Word, and out of the ground, made I the
- 2:34Lord God to grow every tree naturally that is pleasant to
- 2:39the side of man, and man could behold it, and it became also a
- 2:44living soul. Yeah, even all things which I
- 2:49prepared for the use of man. Paul, when he revealed the
- 2:56unknown God on Mars Hill, said, This God that made the world and
- 3:02all things therein, seeing that He is Lord of heaven and earth,
- 3:08dwelleth not in temples made with hands, neither is
- 3:13worshipped with men's hands, as though he needed anything,
- 3:17saying He giveth to all life and breath and all things.
- 3:23For in Him we live and move and have our being, as certain also
- 3:29of our own poets have said, for we are also His offspring.
- 3:36King Benjamin similarly spoke of Him who has created you from the
- 3:42beginning and is preserving you from day-to-day by lending you
- 3:47breath, that ye may live and move and do according to your
- 3:53own will and the even supporting you from one moment to another.
- 4:00Much the same can be said about spiritual life.
- 4:04Speaking of Christ, John said all things were made by him and
- 4:10without Him was not anything made that was made.
- 4:15In him was life, and the life was the light of men.
- 4:22Of all the problems we encounter in this life, there is one that
- 4:27towers above them all and is least understood.
- 4:33The worst of all human conditions in this life is not
- 4:36poverty, sickness, loneliness, abuse, war, or cruelty in all of
- 4:42its diabolical variations, as awful as those conditions are.
- 4:47Rather, the worst of all human conditions is also the most
- 4:52common. It is to die, that is, it is to
- 4:58die spiritually. It is to be separated from the
- 5:02presence of God, and in this life His presence is His spirit
- 5:08or power. The plan of salvation is
- 5:12premised on very harsh realities whenever we sin, where, whether
- 5:18we, whether grave or small, we become impure, and no unclean
- 5:23thing can dwell in the presence of God.
- 5:26God cannot look upon sin with the least degree of allowance.
- 5:32In this condition. We can neither dwell in His
- 5:35presence after this life nor can have His presence or power
- 5:40dwelling with us in this life. As with Adam and Eve, our eyes
- 5:47are open because of our transgressions and because of
- 5:51our experience. We learn something about choices
- 5:56to some extent. We gain the knowledge of good
- 5:59and evil. That is a positive thing, but it
- 6:03comes at a very high price, the experience by which we are
- 6:09educated. We are also condemned, both
- 6:13blessed and cursed, because we have transgressed the
- 6:18commandments of God in the process, and we fall unworthy to
- 6:24remain in God's presence and are cast out.
- 6:29Like Adam and Eve, we suffer spiritual death.
- 6:36By the time we are educated, we are also lost.
- 6:41The price of our tuition is far more than what we can pay.
- 6:46By the time we learn to choose well, by the time we begin to
- 6:50figure things out, it is too late.
- 6:53We experience darkness, confusion, misery, pain, and
- 6:57turmoil associated with our mistakes and sins.
- 7:01And we want out. We want light, clarity, joy,
- 7:07peace, confidence. We want sweetness, pleasure,
- 7:12love, and truth. We want rest.
- 7:14We want what we can never have through our merits and works
- 7:18alone, no matter how well we choose ever after.
- 7:25The best of all human conditions is not wealth, fame, prestige,
- 7:31good health, the honors of men, or security is wonderful as some
- 7:37of those things are. The best of all human conditions
- 7:41in this life is life. It is to be born again, endowed
- 7:50with heavenly power, to receive the Holy Ghost, which is life
- 7:56and the source of knowledge, revelation, strength, clarity,
- 8:00Lovejoy, peace, hope, confidence, faith, and almost
- 8:03every other good thing. King Benjamin said that the
- 8:08Spirit of the Lord is how we are blessed, prospered, and
- 8:13preserved. Our absolute dependence on God
- 8:19for life, as well as every other good thing is true spiritually
- 8:24as well as physically. Life is precarious and fragile
- 8:31in in both realms. We live in a universe which is
- 8:37hostile to life. That that we live at all is
- 8:41beyond human explanation. Even on Earth, in a solar
- 8:46system, and in a corner of our Galaxy that is incomprehensibly
- 8:52fine-tuned to sustained life, we are still extremely vulnerable
- 8:58to death. Death is always just a heartbeat
- 9:02away. Our world is also hostile to
- 9:07spiritual life. That we live at all in the
- 9:11spiritual sense is also beyond human explanation.
- 9:16Even on earth, with a few pockets of safety compatible
- 9:20with the Spirit of God, we are extremely vulnerable to
- 9:25spiritual death. Spiritual death is always just
- 9:29just a misstep away. We all die spiritually and
- 9:35standing alone. Our only and inevitable
- 9:39conclusion is ever increasing chaos, darkness, and
- 9:45irredeemable death. That universal condition is what
- 9:52King Benjamin called, as I've said before, our awful
- 9:57situation. It is awful because spiritual
- 10:01death to be cut off from the presence of God is both both the
- 10:07worst and most common of all human conditions.
- 10:11And there is no way out on our own in our day.
- 10:17The Lord says, whenever we undertake to cover our sins, or
- 10:22to gratify our pride or vain ambition, or to exercise control
- 10:29or dominion or compulsion upon the souls of the children of man
- 10:33in any degree of unrighteousness, the heavens
- 10:37withdraw themselves. The Spirit of the Lord is
- 10:40grieved. And ere He is aware and listen
- 10:44to these chilling words, ere he is aware, he is left unto
- 10:50himself. Those may be the most chilling
- 10:55words in all of Scripture. In ere he is aware, he is left
- 11:02unto himself. Before you know it, you are left
- 11:07alone. You don't want to be alone, cut
- 11:11off from the presence of God. Loneliness is awful, but never
- 11:16so awful as to be cut off from the presence of the Lord.
- 11:19That is abject loneliness. A man who renounced his
- 11:25membership in the church said this.
- 11:29When the Spirit of the Lord leaves your soul, it is the most
- 11:34empty, sad and depressing feeling a person can ever go
- 11:39through. Another who lost his membership
- 11:44in the church adds. I felt the immediate withdrawal
- 11:50of what little I had left of the Spirit.
- 11:54I will never forget the void, a woman observed.
- 12:00I don't think I truly understood or appreciated the blessings I
- 12:04had until they were gone. And when they were gone, there
- 12:08was an emptiness I had never known before, the most
- 12:15devastating consequence suffered by Adam and Eve and by all of
- 12:20us. It's not physical death, nor the
- 12:24suffering, disease, injury and decay that often attends it.
- 12:29Know the worst by far is being cast out of the presence of God,
- 12:33which is spiritual death, because no unclean thing can
- 12:37dwell on the presence of God. They were cut off, separated
- 12:43physically and spiritually, and as far as they knew, they were
- 12:48lost and alone with no way back. We are punished for our own sins
- 12:55and not for Adam's transgression.
- 12:58And all we, as Isaiah said, all we like sheep, have gone astray.
- 13:05We have turned everyone to his own way.
- 13:10We have all made mistakes. We all sin.
- 13:14We all fall short, and again, the Lord cannot look upon sin
- 13:20with the least degree of allowance, and we are cut off
- 13:23from the presence of the Lord. In Matthew's account of the
- 13:28Sermon on the Mount, Christ begins by succinctly framing the
- 13:33essential problems, saying blessed are the poor in spirit,
- 13:40for theirs is the Kingdom of heaven.
- 13:44The beginning of the process of becoming converted unto the Lord
- 13:48is the recognition of our need for a Savior, to recognize that
- 13:54on our own we are poor in spirit, and on our own we can do
- 14:03nothing to remedy that awful condition.
- 14:08Without God and His Son, without his spirit and life, chaos,
- 14:15darkness, and death prevail. The essential problem in life is
- 14:21separation from God our Father. Gratefully now we will turn our
- 14:28attention to the solution of our awful situation in the next
- 14:34several episodes. I hope you will join me then.
