- 0:00Speaker 1: Now, from the Star Runnels Sports Desk, your 93.3 KJRFM
- 0:05Speaker 1: Sports Headlines.
- 0:07Speaker 2: Good morning from Seahawks Headquarters. Headlines are brought to you
- 0:09Speaker 2: by Frost Brew Coors Light Shoes Chill. The Seahawks have
- 0:13Speaker 2: reached agreement with Pro Bowl Defensive Tackle and Leonard Williams.
- 0:16Speaker 2: Three years, $ 90 million extension this morning. Now has him
- 0:19Speaker 2: under contract in Seattle past his 35th birthday. That's through
- 0:23Speaker 2: the 2029 season. More on the why and what Seattle
- 0:27Speaker 2: has meant for Leonard Williams coming up in a minute.
- 0:30Speaker 2: NFL owners voted unanimously, 32 yes votes out of 32 teams,
- 0:34Speaker 2: to approve the Seahawks' sale to the Kozla family in
- 0:37Speaker 2: a meeting yesterday in Atlanta. $ 9. 612 billion deal, NFL record.
- 0:44Speaker 2: The Kozlas are not yet officially owners operating the team,
- 0:47Speaker 2: yet the banks and lawyers have to have the final
- 0:50Speaker 2: vetting of the transaction before the sale is done done.
- 0:54Speaker 2: That's expected to happen in the next week or so
- 0:55Speaker 2: before or on the date of the opening game, September
- 0:58Speaker 2: 9th versus New England. Seahawks practiced yesterday two days before
- 1:01Speaker 2: the final preseason game Friday at Kansas City. Rookie third-round
- 1:05Speaker 2: pick Julian Neal was in full pads, appearing to be
- 1:08Speaker 2: full go. He has missed most of training camp with
- 1:11Speaker 2: a leg injury. Does that suddenly make him a candidate
- 1:14Speaker 2: for the third cornerback derby that Mike McDonald's still raging?
- 1:18Speaker 2: We'll discuss that. The NFL is getting rid of the
- 1:20Speaker 2: Pro Bowl. Finally. No one will miss that. Players sure won't.
- 1:25Speaker 2: But the league will keep the recognition of being selected
- 1:27Speaker 2: as a Pro Bowl player. 88 players will be Pro
- 1:30Speaker 2: Bowl selections on offense, defense, and special teams. No more alternates.
- 1:34Speaker 2: That's for contract incentive purposes, of course. Phillies made quick
- 1:38Speaker 2: work to ensure the Mariners wouldn't sweep them. Six runs
- 1:41Speaker 2: by Philadelphia and two innings off Brian Wu. First loss
- 1:45Speaker 2: of the season to home for Wu is now 7-1
- 1:46Speaker 2: at the yard. Seattle shut out for the 13th time
- 1:50Speaker 2: this season, third most in Major League Baseball. The Pirates
- 1:53Speaker 2: and the Phillies have been shut out 15 times, the
- 1:55Speaker 2: Tigers 14 times. But the M's did stay two and
- 1:58Speaker 2: a half back in the AL West because the trash
- 2:01Speaker 2: cans lost again. Every team in the division is under 500.
- 2:04Speaker 2: 28 games left. Mariners travel today to Toronto for a
- 2:07Speaker 2: road trip that begins at the Blue Jays, then into
- 2:10Speaker 2: Fenway Park for Boston next week. And the Big 12
- 2:14Speaker 2: is joining the Big 10 in the Southeastern Conference and
- 2:17Speaker 2: banning players who've been drafted into pro leagues or have
- 2:20Speaker 2: been on a pro roster, won't allow them to come
- 2:23Speaker 2: back to play college sports in the Big 12, Big 10,
- 2:25Speaker 2: or SEC. Now on with the Thursday show. Echo Chamber,
- 2:29Speaker 2: I'm in the little room off the side of the
- 2:32Speaker 2: media room here at Seahawks headquarters. Seahawks are about to
- 2:35Speaker 2: begin practice in about five minutes. And then coach Mike
- 2:38Speaker 2: McDonald is going to address us at 11, 10 or so.
- 2:42Speaker 2: We're going to carry that live here on the show.
- 2:45Speaker 2: His first comments since he got back from the team,
- 2:48Speaker 2: got back from Tennessee. Good morning. Jasmine McIntyre is back
- 2:51Speaker 2: in our LA based studios in Seattle. Good morning, ma'am.
- 2:53Speaker 3: Good morning.
- 2:54Speaker 4: How is it out there?
- 2:56Speaker 2: Quiet. No fans, no media. When I got here, it
- 3:00Speaker 2: was just by myself. And now I'm in this white
- 3:03Speaker 2: walled room that creates an echo. That's what you're sounding
- 3:06Speaker 2: and hearing in the background. Leonard Williams, three years, $ 90 million.
- 3:12Speaker 2: He's 32 years old now, entering his 12th training camp.
- 3:17Speaker 2: He was talking about retiring when he was in New
- 3:19Speaker 2: York after year eight from so many losing seasons. We'll
- 3:24Speaker 2: talk about how Seattle has transformed him and how his
- 3:26Speaker 2: life is different as we come into the show here
- 3:29Speaker 2: from Seahawks headquarters. That's the news of the day. The
- 3:32Speaker 2: news of yesterday, you'll hear the first public comments from
- 3:36Speaker 2: Vinod Khosla, about he, his wife, their son becoming new
- 3:39Speaker 2: owners of the Seahawks. He was asked in Atlanta yesterday
- 3:43Speaker 2: by reporters about the future of Lumen Field, how he
- 3:46Speaker 2: views the Seahawks football operation and more. I thought he
- 3:49Speaker 2: struck exactly the right tone. Patience, going to learn. We're
- 3:53Speaker 2: going to sit back and learn the operation of the
- 3:55Speaker 2: community here. I know some people are getting a little
- 3:58Speaker 2: bent out of shape about Lumen Field's future. They're Bay
- 4:02Speaker 2: Area owners. Are they going to move the team? I
- 4:04Speaker 2: get it. Those of you that have been in Seattle
- 4:06Speaker 2: a few days remember the Sonics, Howard Schultz selling the
- 4:10Speaker 2: team to carpetbaggers from Oklahoma. This is not that. We'll
- 4:14Speaker 2: talk about that for sure. There is such a difference.
- 4:17Speaker 2: But I get it. I get it. Out-of-town owners, I
- 4:21Speaker 2: get it. I lived here. I covered that trial.
- 4:23Speaker 4: I know.
- 4:24Speaker 5: I know.
- 4:25Speaker 6: I do think that people will enjoy hearing from Van
- 4:28Speaker 6: Gogh when we play that audio coming up here in
- 4:30Speaker 6: a little bit because you're going to enjoy him and
- 4:33Speaker 6: what he had to say if that's something that's in
- 4:35Speaker 6: the back of your head.
- 4:36Speaker 2: I think so. I think it was reassuring. And again,
- 4:40Speaker 2: as a Seahawk, if you're a Seahawk fan, I'm not
- 4:42Speaker 2: sure you would want to hear anything else than what
- 4:44Speaker 2: he said yesterday in terms of– I'll let him speak
- 4:48Speaker 2: for himself. Come up at 10.25. At 10.45, Cooper Copp.
- 4:53Speaker 2: He's born and raised here in Washington State, was going
- 4:55Speaker 2: to Seahawks games in the Kingdome. He talked yesterday about
- 4:59Speaker 2: the new ownership change, the value of the Seahawks to
- 5:02Speaker 2: the state, to the Pacific Northwest. He has a keen
- 5:05Speaker 2: understanding of that, 33-year-old wide receiver. He'll also talk about
- 5:09Speaker 2: the impact of losing Jake Bobo. It's more than just
- 5:12Speaker 2: the numbers as a fourth or fifth wide receiver in
- 5:15Speaker 2: special teams. Cooper Kopp talked about that yesterday. You'll hear
- 5:19Speaker 2: from him at 1045.com. At 11 o'clock, we'll do headlines again.
- 5:22Speaker 2: And then right after about headlines around 11.10, we're expecting
- 5:25Speaker 2: Mike McDonald to begin his press conference at the end
- 5:27Speaker 2: of practice today. We'll carry that live around 11.10, 11.30.
- 5:31Speaker 2: Of course, it's the time we do every day, your
- 5:33Speaker 2: talkbacks and your text. It's coming on your text line.
- 5:38Speaker 2: It's 49451. If you want to leave a 30-second voicemail
- 5:40Speaker 2: message on the iHeartRadio app, 933KJR, or our website, 933KJR. com.
- 5:46Speaker 2: You can do that. Jessamyn will play them back at 11.30.
- 5:50Speaker 2: And then we'll talk to Ian Furness at 1145, talk
- 5:53Speaker 2: about what's on his show today. I was going to
- 5:56Speaker 2: talk a lot about the Mariners in this first segment,
- 5:58Speaker 2: and now the Winter Williams news has come up this morning.
- 6:02Speaker 2: But about the Mariners, Brian Wu, we know about his
- 6:05Speaker 2: road troubles. He was always sterling at home. Yesterday is
- 6:09Speaker 2: his first loss in eight decisions at home this year.
- 6:11Speaker 2: Six runs in the first two innings tied his career
- 6:14Speaker 2: high for runs allowed for the first two innings he got.
- 6:18Speaker 2: tagged by Schwarber, as many people have. He's got 40
- 6:21Speaker 2: home runs now. Kyle Schwarber does the first in the
- 6:24Speaker 2: major leagues to get to 40, and he got it
- 6:25Speaker 2: off Brian Wu yesterday. First time in three years, Brian
- 6:29Speaker 2: Wu gave up six runs through two innings. Now here
- 6:33Speaker 2: come the Mariners to a road trip that is no picnic.
- 6:36Speaker 2: Toronto has resurfaced in the playoff race, or the playoff
- 6:39Speaker 2: race has gone back to them because of so many
- 6:41Speaker 2: teams that are under. 500 in the playoff chase. They
- 6:45Speaker 2: got three with the Blue Jays. Then they have Boston
- 6:48Speaker 2: next week with the Red Sox. Of course, they're now
- 6:50Speaker 2: holding a playoff spot after just going crazy in the
- 6:53Speaker 2: middle of the summer, winning like 27 out of 30
- 6:56Speaker 2: games to come from way back. And then they come
- 7:00Speaker 2: home to the A's, the Rangers. They go to the A's.
- 7:05Speaker 2: The Mariners play the Angels twice and the A's twice
- 7:09Speaker 2: to finish the season, plus the trash cans and the Rangers. So,
- 7:14Speaker 2: None of those teams are over 500. None of them
- 7:16Speaker 2: have a winning record, not even at 500. But, Jessamyn,
- 7:20Speaker 2: we've seen before this team lose series to teams they
- 7:23Speaker 2: should just be mopping up, and that can't happen here
- 7:27Speaker 2: in the final 29 games.
- 7:28Speaker 6: No, they still want a, you know, dumb and dumber
- 7:31Speaker 6: quote coming at them.
- 7:33Speaker 2: Yeah. They still do have a chance, of course. Two
- 7:37Speaker 2: and a half games back with a favorable schedule and
- 7:41Speaker 2: just coming off stretch of the Yankees, the trash cans.
- 7:44Speaker 2: the Cubs and the Phillies, and they went eight and
- 7:46Speaker 2: five and nobody expected that. Uh, most people would have
- 7:50Speaker 2: thought that we, all of us, including us that see
- 7:53Speaker 2: the team every day and are consider ourselves rooters for
- 7:56Speaker 2: the Mariners would have figured they'd be under 500 in
- 7:58Speaker 2: that stretch. And they went eight and five and they
- 8:01Speaker 2: took a series against the Cubs who have just been
- 8:03Speaker 2: destroying teams since the Cubs left town. They took a
- 8:06Speaker 2: series against the Phillies, another playoff team with all kinds
- 8:10Speaker 2: of bats in that lineup. And, Yet they went 4-6
- 8:15Speaker 2: between those two National League playoff teams. We said it yesterday.
- 8:19Speaker 2: If Cal Raleigh continues to hit, he got an off
- 8:22Speaker 2: day from catching yesterday, day game after night game. If
- 8:25Speaker 2: Cal Raleigh continues to hit, this is a different team.
- 8:28Speaker 2: No matter what anybody else does. I mean, different team.
- 8:35Speaker 7: 4-9, 4-5-1.
- 8:35Speaker 2: 29, 28 games left. Do you think the math is
- 8:38Speaker 2: mathing for the Mariners? Do you think two and a
- 8:40Speaker 2: half back is they got this? Or are you still
- 8:45Speaker 2: realizing that they're a six-game under 500 team. That's not
- 8:48Speaker 2: really turned a corner just yet. There's not a big
- 8:51Speaker 2: corner to turn, Jessamyn, right? Right. I mean, a four-game,
- 8:55Speaker 2: five-game winning streak would do it.
- 8:57Speaker 4: I mean, that's it. That's all you need. That's all
- 8:59Speaker 4: you need in this AL West. Honestly. Honestly.
- 9:03Speaker 6: I mean, we can keep talking about how 54% would
- 9:06Speaker 6: be doing it right now, too.
- 9:08Speaker 2: Sure would. But they'd have to go like 700 the
- 9:11Speaker 2: rest of the way to get to 54% for this season.
- 9:14Speaker 8: Right.
- 9:14Speaker 2: 82 and 80 probably would win the division. 81 and
- 9:17Speaker 2: 81 is probably going to win the division. Right now,
- 9:20Speaker 2: the trash cans are in first place with one game
- 9:22Speaker 2: under 500. Mariners only have to make up, what, five
- 9:28Speaker 2: games to get to 500 right now? Six games to
- 9:32Speaker 2: get to 500. All right, about the Seahawks. Leonard Williams.
- 9:35Speaker 2: I was curious if Leonard Williams would entertain a contract
- 9:39Speaker 2: extension now or play out the season to see where
- 9:42Speaker 2: he wanted to go He's 32 years old. He married
- 9:47Speaker 2: his wife Haley just last year in 2025 in the offseason.
- 9:52Speaker 2: They had their first child this offseason, little son Zion.
- 9:56Speaker 2: They bought a house in the hills above the Seahawks
- 9:58Speaker 2: headquarters here and rented it. Newport Hills. But he's played–
- 10:04Speaker 2: this will be his 12th NFL season. It was certainly
- 10:06Speaker 2: a question. Last year I talked to him about Calais Campbell.
- 10:10Speaker 2: He was playing his 18th season for the Arizona Cardinals
- 10:13Speaker 2: as a defensive lineman. And Williams was just shaking his
- 10:16Speaker 2: head like, ain't no way. Ain't no way I could envision–
- 10:19Speaker 2: play in six more years and now he's under contract
- 10:22Speaker 2: for four more years because this one is the final
- 10:25Speaker 2: year of his deal and then three more after it
- 10:27Speaker 2: through the 2029 season he'll take him past his 35th
- 10:31Speaker 2: birthday and that's getting up there for a defensive lineman
- 10:35Speaker 2: but he talked about that i just posted a story
- 10:37Speaker 2: about a half hour ago at the news tribune the
- 10:39Speaker 2: news tribune.com you can go check it out but seattle
- 10:43Speaker 2: transformed him he talked a couple weeks ago with us
- 10:46Speaker 2: here in training camp about how after about the year
- 10:48Speaker 2: seven and eight in New York, the Jets had drafted
- 10:50Speaker 2: him sixth overall in 2015. And after a few years
- 10:55Speaker 2: with the Jets, he got traded to the Giants. And
- 10:57Speaker 2: eight years were losing seasons. No sniff of a Super Bowl.
- 11:01Speaker 2: And he said, is this it? Is this what football is?
- 11:04Speaker 2: Is this what my career is? And he was thinking
- 11:06Speaker 2: of quitting, he said, after year eight, still in his 20s.
- 11:11Speaker 2: And then he got traded to the Seahawks. John Schneider
- 11:13Speaker 2: in the middle of the 2023 season. making the move
- 11:17Speaker 2: for a couple draft picks to get Leonard Williams midseason.
- 11:20Speaker 2: That was, of course, Pete Carroll's last season as Seahawks coach.
- 11:24Speaker 2: And Leonard Williams said that the minute he got here,
- 11:27Speaker 2: it transformed him. His outlook, the Pete Carroll's environment, Seattle
- 11:32Speaker 2: as a city, the Pacific Northwest. He'd never really spent
- 11:36Speaker 2: any time here. He played at USC, but he grew
- 11:38Speaker 2: up in Daytona Beach, Florida. And he was blown away.
- 11:43Speaker 2: And all of a sudden he said, I can do this.
- 11:45Speaker 2: I'm revived and refreshed. So he signed one extension right
- 11:50Speaker 2: after the trade to stay in Seattle. And now this
- 11:53Speaker 2: is the second extension. Think of what it's done for
- 11:56Speaker 2: Leonard Williams since he got here in the middle of
- 11:59Speaker 2: the 2023 season. He signed two. Today his agreement will
- 12:02Speaker 2: make him with two Seahawks contracts totaling $ 154. 5 million in
- 12:08Speaker 2: total value. He met his wife, the daughter of former
- 12:13Speaker 2: NFL coach, star Ronnie Lott, married Haley last year while
- 12:17Speaker 2: in Seattle, bought a house in the hills above Seattle,
- 12:20Speaker 2: and they had their first child in that house and
- 12:23Speaker 2: raising it in that house right above Seahawk headquarters in
- 12:26Speaker 2: Newport Hills, all since he got traded here. Oh, by
- 12:28Speaker 2: the way, he's made two Pro Bowls. He went on
- 12:32Speaker 2: to his first Super Bowl, and he earned his first
- 12:34Speaker 2: Super Bowl ring after 11 years in the league. it's
- 12:38Speaker 2: worked out pretty well for Leonard Williams.
- 12:42Speaker 6: I'm actually thinking back to that time where he was
- 12:44Speaker 6: ready to hang him up. Like, imagine like right.
- 12:46Speaker 4: Now, aren't you like, Oh boy.
- 12:49Speaker 6: It's one of the highest paid defensive tackles in the league.
- 12:53Speaker 9: Right.
- 12:53Speaker 2: And think about it from his perspective, but also from ours,
- 12:57Speaker 2: if they had never traded for Leonard Williams, they wouldn't
- 13:00Speaker 2: have the force that they have in the locker room.
- 13:02Speaker 2: Why are the Seahawks doing this at age 32? Because
- 13:05Speaker 2: Leonard Williams is, is an everything guy for Mike McDonald.
- 13:09Speaker 2: He's a confidant. He's a guy that, that McDonald goes to,
- 13:14Speaker 2: to get a pulse of the team, to bounce ideas
- 13:16Speaker 2: off of, to present things to, to the team. They run,
- 13:20Speaker 2: he runs it through Leonard Williams first. You saw the
- 13:22Speaker 2: clip the other, you saw the scene the other night
- 13:24Speaker 2: in the fourth episode of hard knocks where how vulnerable
- 13:28Speaker 2: Mike McDonald was talking about the passing of his friend
- 13:31Speaker 2: and mentor in Baltimore, OJ Brignance. And, Leonard Williams coming
- 13:36Speaker 2: up to him at the practice an hour later saying,
- 13:39Speaker 2: that was good blank this morning, coach. He appreciated his vulnerability. And,
- 13:46Speaker 2: I mean, that's how the relationship that they have. McDonald
- 13:50Speaker 2: relies on Williams to be a locker room leader, to
- 13:52Speaker 2: be a defensive tackle, a three technique, a five technique,
- 13:55Speaker 2: to be a defensive end, to move around and confuse
- 13:59Speaker 2: offenses on where he's lining up. He lined up a
- 14:02Speaker 2: defensive tackle. Excuse me, nose tackle. and dropped into coverage
- 14:06Speaker 2: a few years ago with Pete Carroll and intercepted a
- 14:08Speaker 2: pass against the New York Jets and intercepted Aaron Rodgers
- 14:13Speaker 2: and had a pick six out of that as a
- 14:14Speaker 2: nose tackle. That's how versatile Leonard Williams is to the
- 14:19Speaker 2: defense on the field. And then in the locker room,
- 14:21Speaker 2: he's indispensable to the coaching staff, to head coach, he's indispensable.
- 14:25Speaker 2: That's why they're investing $ 90 million for the next three years. Now,
- 14:29Speaker 2: of course, NFL economics and the way NFL is, Williams
- 14:32Speaker 2: is going to have to maintain his health and his
- 14:35Speaker 2: level of performance to see all $ 90 million in all
- 14:38Speaker 2: three years of that deal. Right.
- 14:39Speaker 6: But it's still $ 56 million guaranteed.
- 14:43Speaker 10: Yeah.
- 14:44Speaker 2: He's getting that no matter what he does. But yeah,
- 14:48Speaker 2: it's almost certainly the way John Schneider does it. Backloaded deal.
- 14:52Speaker 2: That has a lot of money due at the end
- 14:53Speaker 2: of it. Most of the guaranteed money up front. so
- 14:56Speaker 2: that by the third season the team can reassess when
- 14:59Speaker 2: he's turning 35 whether they want to continue with the
- 15:01Speaker 2: final year of the contract or perhaps renegotiate it to
- 15:04Speaker 2: a better salary cap number. Yes, all that's true. But
- 15:07Speaker 2: the very fact that at age 32 the Seahawks have
- 15:10Speaker 2: decided to re-up a guy past his 35th birthday tells you, one,
- 15:15Speaker 2: how they feel he's still in his prime as a
- 15:18Speaker 2: player and physically and health-wise, and two, how valuable he
- 15:23Speaker 2: is to the locker room at large. This is just
- 15:26Speaker 2: the first of a couple of deals that are coming
- 15:28Speaker 2: at the defensive line. Next year at this time, Byron
- 15:31Speaker 2: Murphy is going to get the brink struck backing up
- 15:33Speaker 2: to him. He's going to get paid among the top
- 15:38Speaker 2: defensive tackles in the league. And you say, okay, how
- 15:41Speaker 2: can they afford all this? Well, DeMarcus Lawrence is going
- 15:44Speaker 2: to retire. He's already told our friend, just this past
- 15:48Speaker 2: two weeks ago that he will retire after his age
- 15:50Speaker 2: 34 season this year. The salary cap will keep going up.
- 15:55Speaker 2: It's at $ 300 million this year. It'll probably go to $ 315, $ 310.
- 15:58Speaker 2: It goes up at least $ 10, $ 15, sometimes $ 20 million
- 16:04Speaker 2: year over year, thanks to the media rights and the
- 16:06Speaker 2: fact the NFL prints money. That's something always to consider
- 16:10Speaker 2: with these contracts, the Devin Witherspoon contract. How can they
- 16:14Speaker 2: get Witherspoon and Jackson Smith and Jigba, the top of
- 16:18Speaker 2: the market, at their position money in the same year?
- 16:21Speaker 2: in the same off season. It's because the relative, the
- 16:25Speaker 2: value of those contracts, the relative cost of the percentage
- 16:29Speaker 2: taken up the salary cap goes down every year. It
- 16:32Speaker 2: gets more economic and more of a value year over
- 16:35Speaker 2: year because of how the salary cap, the salary cap's
- 16:37Speaker 2: only gone down once in the last generation. And that
- 16:41Speaker 2: was during the pandemic. So yes, the Seahawks are going
- 16:47Speaker 2: to be able to afford this. Of course, they've already
- 16:49Speaker 2: planned this out and penciled this out, but, NFL math
- 16:52Speaker 2: to be in the way it is that they will
- 16:54Speaker 2: get it done under an increasing salary cap. 49451 on
- 16:57Speaker 2: the Tacoma Dodge text line. What's Leonard Williams to you
- 17:02Speaker 2: as a Seahawks fan? I mean, you see him raising
- 17:06Speaker 2: both arms and bench pressing the sky as a signature celebration.
- 17:11Speaker 2: He now has made his home here. A native Floridian
- 17:13Speaker 2: who played college football in Los Angeles has made a home,
- 17:17Speaker 2: a wife, a child, a young family that they're raising here.
- 17:20Speaker 2: in Seattle, in the Seattle area. He's a pillar of
- 17:23Speaker 2: the community now and the sports community here in Seattle.
- 17:27Speaker 2: Your view of Leonard Williams as a player and as
- 17:29Speaker 2: a member of the Pacific Northwest, now one of us,
- 17:33Speaker 2: end of deal, three years, $ 90 million if you missed
- 17:35Speaker 2: it at the top of the show. Again, he and
- 17:39Speaker 2: all the other starters are not playing tomorrow night. They're
- 17:41Speaker 2: practicing today. They're going to get on a plane this afternoon,
- 17:44Speaker 2: fly to Kansas City. They'll probably all get in full
- 17:46Speaker 2: pads and warm up and make it like a practice
- 17:48Speaker 2: tomorrow night at Arrowhead Stadium pregame. And then they'll take
- 17:52Speaker 2: their pads off, put ball caps on and watch as
- 17:55Speaker 2: the second and third team play. I don't even know, Jessamyn,
- 17:58Speaker 2: if Drew Locke's going to play. Maybe Mike McDonald will
- 18:02Speaker 2: discuss that at 1110 when we air his press conference.
- 18:05Speaker 2: But remember last year, Jalen Miller played the whole game.
- 18:08Speaker 5: Yes.
- 18:08Speaker 2: The third preseason game.
- 18:09Speaker 4: I do.
- 18:09Speaker 6: Well, I'm wondering because... Oh, sorry. I'm wondering if they
- 18:13Speaker 6: need a harder look in... deciding whether or not to
- 18:16Speaker 6: carry three quarterbacks on the roster when it comes to milrow.
- 18:19Speaker 2: Yeah could be yeah um on speaking frankly here milrow
- 18:26Speaker 2: hasn't done anything that would the seahawks should be concerned
- 18:29Speaker 2: that he's going to get claimed off waivers i mean
- 18:32Speaker 2: they could put him on the practice squad i think
- 18:35Speaker 2: because of his performance so far this preseason now if
- 18:37Speaker 2: he lights it up tomorrow night in kansas city perhaps
- 18:39Speaker 2: that would be a riskier proposition but what jessima's talking
- 18:42Speaker 2: about is last year he played was on the roster
- 18:45Speaker 2: the entire season, but he only played in three plays
- 18:49Speaker 2: in three different, one in each of the three games
- 18:51Speaker 2: into October. He fumbled, of course, against Tampa Bay, and
- 18:55Speaker 2: that was it. He didn't see the field the rest
- 18:57Speaker 2: of the year. He wasn't even active for a game
- 18:58Speaker 2: the rest of the season, yet he stayed on the
- 19:00Speaker 2: 53-man roster. So that begs the question, do they want
- 19:03Speaker 2: to use another roster spot on him to carry him
- 19:05Speaker 2: as the third quarterback, emergency third quarterback, or do you
- 19:08Speaker 2: bring him up from the practice squad early in the
- 19:10Speaker 2: season to fill that emergency third quarterback role? But to
- 19:13Speaker 2: get him on the practice squad, you have to pass
- 19:15Speaker 2: him through waivers. And a third-round pick, high-profile program like Alabama,
- 19:21Speaker 2: maybe you'd say he wouldn't clear waivers to get to
- 19:23Speaker 2: the practice squad. But his performance this preseason so far,
- 19:27Speaker 2: the interceptions, the holding the ball in sacks on fourth down,
- 19:31Speaker 2: the league sees that. They have it on film. And
- 19:34Speaker 2: that if he is among the 1,100 players waived on
- 19:37Speaker 2: Sunday at the cut-down day from 90 to 53, he
- 19:40Speaker 2: probably could sneak through and get to the practice squad.
- 19:43Speaker 2: But what's that do to Jalen Milrow? Because he spent
- 19:46Speaker 2: all of last season on the roster. Then you pick
- 19:49Speaker 2: him off. the roster and make him the practice squad,
- 19:52Speaker 2: and now you have a mental-emotional component to that to
- 19:55Speaker 2: a young quarterback who's already been struggling this preseason. I
- 19:59Speaker 2: think he's going to stay on the 53-man roster for
- 20:01Speaker 2: that reason and the fact that they will keep him
- 20:03Speaker 2: as an emergency third quarterback. But again, if the Seahawks
- 20:07Speaker 2: season goes anything as they're planning, Milrow and Locke aren't
- 20:11Speaker 2: seeing the field. And I haven't seen anything of the
- 20:14Speaker 2: Clint Kubiak special package run plays. I haven't seen that
- 20:18Speaker 2: at all under Brian Fleury.
- 20:19Speaker 6: Yeah, I remember Fleury saying that. We're not making that happen.
- 20:24Speaker 6: If the game dictates that, then maybe. But he's not
- 20:28Speaker 6: planning on it is the gist that I got from
- 20:30Speaker 6: his press conference.
- 20:31Speaker 2: Yeah, they want Milrow to be a quarterback. They want
- 20:33Speaker 2: him to step back and make decisions in the pocket,
- 20:36Speaker 2: and when he thinks he can beat someone on the edge,
- 20:38Speaker 2: be decisive in taking off and doing that. He just
- 20:41Speaker 2: hasn't done that consistently in the preseason game. I think
- 20:44Speaker 2: they're going to, if I had to guess, I think
- 20:46Speaker 2: they're going to give him the same treatment they gave
- 20:47Speaker 2: him in Green Bay last year, play the whole game,
- 20:50Speaker 2: come out, start the game, come out in the second half,
- 20:53Speaker 2: and Drew Locke has done enough already in Seattle before
- 20:56Speaker 2: this preseason even to know the Seahawks know he can
- 20:59Speaker 2: come off the bench and win a game if Sam
- 21:01Speaker 2: Darnold isn't able to play for some reason. 49451, your opinions,
- 21:05Speaker 2: your thoughts. We'll read back your text at 1130. At 1110,
- 21:08Speaker 2: you'll hear Mike McDonald live following his practice here before
- 21:12Speaker 2: the team gets on a plane to Kansas City. Up next,
- 21:14Speaker 2: you're going to hear from the new owners of the Seahawks,
- 21:16Speaker 2: the first public verbal comments. He's commented online quite a bit.
- 21:21Speaker 2: He has a very robust social media presence, Vinod Khosla does.
- 21:26Speaker 2: But now he's talking as a Seahawks owner for the
- 21:28Speaker 2: first time. You'll hear from him next on 93.3 KJRFM.
- 21:43Speaker 2: Welcome back to Seahawks Headquarters, the Virginia Mason Athletic Center,
- 21:47Speaker 2: where Seahawks are on the practice field right now. Really
- 21:50Speaker 2: light practice, an hour practice before they head to Kansas City,
- 21:54Speaker 2: get on a bus, fly out this afternoon for the
- 21:57Speaker 2: game tomorrow night, the final of three preseason games. Mike
- 21:59Speaker 2: McDonald is going to speak right at the end of
- 22:01Speaker 2: practice today. We expect it to be about 11.15, 11.10
- 22:04Speaker 2: or so. We'll carry his comments live here on 93.3 KJRFM.
- 22:09Speaker 2: Greg Bell and Jessamyn McIntyre with you. Yesterday, Vinod Khosla
- 22:15Speaker 2: and his wife, Nehru, and his son, Neil, were in Atlanta.
- 22:19Speaker 2: So was Roger Goodell. So were all 32 team owners
- 22:22Speaker 2: in the NFL or their representatives, and they voted on
- 22:24Speaker 2: the sale of the Seahawks, and they approved it. All
- 22:27Speaker 2: 32 yes votes, a unanimous approval. The Khosla family has
- 22:31Speaker 2: the new Seahawk owner buying the club from the estate
- 22:34Speaker 2: of Paul G. Allen. Vinod Khosla had spoke to the media.
- 22:39Speaker 2: There was an impromptu kind of informal press conference right
- 22:43Speaker 2: after the vote. These are his first public comments as
- 22:46Speaker 2: owner of the Seahawks. Vinod Khosla, a new owner, 71
- 22:50Speaker 2: years old, Sun Microsystems co-founder, AI investor at the beginning
- 22:55Speaker 2: of AI, is now the owner of the Seahawks. This
- 22:58Speaker 2: is Vinod Khosla yesterday.
- 23:00Speaker 11: As Roger said, it's pretty simple when the team is
- 23:04Speaker 11: functioning as well as it is today. How often do
- 23:07Speaker 11: you get to buy a franchise that just won the
- 23:10Speaker 11: Super Bowl? So we are incredibly lucky and humbled by
- 23:15Speaker 11: this gift, I would say, from the Allen Trust. And
- 23:21Speaker 11: of course, having been to Lumen Field and watching the
- 23:25Speaker 11: 12s everywhere, I do want to thank them for their
- 23:29Speaker 11: passion and fervor. And the community in Seattle is incredibly valuable,
- 23:36Speaker 11: so we hope we'll engage a lot more with the
- 23:39Speaker 11: community also. The task ahead is actually pretty simple. Keep
- 23:46Speaker 11: the winning streak alive, get another Super Bowl. In general,
- 23:50Speaker 11: our approach is generally going to be long-term focused.
- 23:55Speaker 12: That's our inclination always. So keep winning, take a long-term approach,
- 24:04Speaker 12: and learn a lot.
- 24:06Speaker 11: We don't know enough, and so hopefully the other owners
- 24:09Speaker 11: have been incredibly welcoming and willing to teach us. Lumen
- 24:13Speaker 11: Field is iconic and very much a part of the
- 24:17Speaker 11: Seahawks brand.
- 24:18Speaker 2: So that's all I will say for now.
- 24:22Speaker 11: Obviously, we are not owners yet, and we need to
- 24:26Speaker 11: learn a lot more. But we will work with management
- 24:29Speaker 11: and with others and the community in Seattle to hopefully
- 24:34Speaker 11: preserve this iconic brand.
- 24:38Speaker 2: The note cozily yesterday in Atlanta to reporters, that last
- 24:42Speaker 2: comment was a question about the future of long-term future
- 24:45Speaker 2: of Lumenfield. Him referencing they're not owners yet is a
- 24:49Speaker 2: nod toward the fact that the lawyers and the bankers
- 24:51Speaker 2: have to vet the $ 9. 6 billion transaction. As we mentioned,
- 24:55Speaker 2: it's not like you're plopping down $ 20 on some stake
- 24:58Speaker 2: at Safeway. It's a little more complicated than that at
- 25:01Speaker 2: $ 9. 6 billion. So that's why they're not officially the owners yet.
- 25:05Speaker 2: What I'm told is the Those transactions and the lawyering
- 25:09Speaker 2: and the vetting of it will probably take a week
- 25:10Speaker 2: or so, given the Labor Day holiday that's coming up
- 25:14Speaker 2: next weekend. It's likely the Seahawks will have an introductory
- 25:18Speaker 2: Here Are New Owners press conference at Lumen Field, maybe
- 25:23Speaker 2: the day of the NFL kickoff game, September 9th, Seahawks
- 25:26Speaker 2: and Patriots, maybe the day before. But around that time,
- 25:30Speaker 2: right after Labor Day, maybe a target date that they
- 25:33Speaker 2: become officially the new owners. But you heard him talk
- 25:36Speaker 2: about Lumen Field, and he said he wants to preserve it.
- 25:39Speaker 2: It's an iconic venue. He wants to preserve the legacy
- 25:42Speaker 2: of Lumen Field. There's some things at play there. One,
- 25:46Speaker 2: I talked with Ian a little bit about this yesterday,
- 25:48Speaker 2: but he didn't come right out and say he's going
- 25:51Speaker 2: to keep Lumen Field exactly as it is because he
- 25:53Speaker 2: wants to generate as much revenue as he can out
- 25:56Speaker 2: of that stadium. The new owners are always seeking to
- 25:59Speaker 2: improve local revenue, and an existing stadium– that has two
- 26:05Speaker 2: open sides to it, the two corners of the north
- 26:07Speaker 2: end zone next to the hawk's nest on the downtown
- 26:09Speaker 2: side of the stadium, that's begging to be closed, right?
- 26:14Speaker 2: You could put a couple thousand seats permanently in those
- 26:17Speaker 2: corners to close the bowl, and you'd have a stadium
- 26:21Speaker 2: that goes from 68,000 to 70-plus thousand easily. Now, of course,
- 26:26Speaker 2: that takes a little outlay of money. It takes negotiating
- 26:28Speaker 2: with the public entities and the stadium district that operate
- 26:33Speaker 2: the stadium at first and goal Inc that was created
- 26:36Speaker 2: to run the stadium after Paul Allen got it built.
- 26:39Speaker 7: Yes.
- 26:40Speaker 2: And Kozla said they look forward to working with the
- 26:42Speaker 2: community and the entities around the stadium about that. I just,
- 26:47Speaker 2: I think as a Seahawk fan, you like to hear
- 26:49Speaker 2: a new owner come in and say, we want to learn.
- 26:52Speaker 2: We want to see and learn.
- 26:54Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 26:54Speaker 6: That was my favorite part actually. And acknowledging the fact
- 26:57Speaker 6: that they just won the Superbowl. I'm really not going
- 27:00Speaker 6: to mess with much.
- 27:02Speaker 7: Right.
- 27:02Speaker 2: As a fan, a football fan, that's the best news
- 27:05Speaker 2: of all. Their family recognizes this team just won the
- 27:09Speaker 2: Super Bowl. And he said, we're blessed. We're lucky that
- 27:13Speaker 2: we have this opportunity. His quote was, how many times
- 27:17Speaker 2: can you buy a Super Bowl champion? It's almost unprecedented.
- 27:21Speaker 2: I did some research and I can't see a team
- 27:24Speaker 2: that won a Super Bowl that was sold within months.
- 27:27Speaker 2: I mean, the team went on sale like a week
- 27:30Speaker 2: or two after they won the Super Bowl. Most franchise
- 27:33Speaker 2: ownership changes are because the owner is dumping it for
- 27:36Speaker 2: a profit or there's some dysfunction or they're forced out
- 27:39Speaker 2: by the league. We all know examples of that. And
- 27:42Speaker 2: this is not the case here. This is not the
- 27:44Speaker 2: case of an out-of-town owner coming in and buying from
- 27:48Speaker 2: an owner who is just trying to make a profit
- 27:50Speaker 2: and turn a buck. Paul Allen, when he died, he
- 27:54Speaker 2: left in his will that we have to sell, that
- 27:58Speaker 2: you have to sell all of my assets and give
- 28:00Speaker 2: it to philanthropy. Not in someone's pocket. This isn't Howard
- 28:03Speaker 2: Schultz selling to Clayton Bennett and Howard Schultz getting all
- 28:06Speaker 2: the profit from the sale of the Seahawks or the
- 28:09Speaker 2: Sonics 2018 years ago. This is from the Paul G.
- 28:15Speaker 2: Allen Trust. It was a mandate. And all this money,
- 28:18Speaker 2: $ 9. 6 billion, is going to go to philanthropic causes. So
- 28:21Speaker 2: it's a completely different transaction and financial situation there. Look, Jessamyn,
- 28:27Speaker 2: the way I view Lumen Field, yes, it doesn't have the–
- 28:32Speaker 2: team-owned restaurants and bars that the Patriots and that other
- 28:38Speaker 2: teams are building to increase their local revenue. It has
- 28:42Speaker 2: everything else that he would seek in a new stadium, say,
- 28:46Speaker 2: if he wanted to go to Bellevue or something. He
- 28:49Speaker 2: has the confluence of I-5 and I-90, two major regional
- 28:55Speaker 2: transportation companies.
- 28:57Speaker 4: Oh, the location is unbelievable.
- 28:59Speaker 2: He has light rail and public transit at his doorstep.
- 29:03Speaker 2: He is just off the waterfront, and he is at
- 29:07Speaker 2: a downtown location that people can go places after. Now,
- 29:11Speaker 2: the team doesn't get the money for that because they
- 29:13Speaker 2: don't own those restaurants and bars. But I get the sense, Jessamyn,
- 29:18Speaker 2: that billionaires who are able to spend $ 9. 6 billion on
- 29:21Speaker 2: a team aren't quite as motivated. Not all NFL teams
- 29:27Speaker 2: are billionaires. But my sense is he's not quite as
- 29:30Speaker 2: motivated as to rip it up and start over from
- 29:33Speaker 2: the stadium perspective just to build restaurants and bars. That's
- 29:37Speaker 2: my opinion. That's what impression I've got. a few times
- 29:41Speaker 2: I've heard from him. But we'll see. Never say never.
- 29:45Speaker 2: And they own the team and they obviously can do
- 29:47Speaker 2: whatever they want to do with it. But I just
- 29:50Speaker 2: don't see it right now. To reiterate the stadium situation,
- 29:54Speaker 2: the lease runs through 2031. There are three 10-year options
- 30:00Speaker 2: that the team and the stadium have. I'm currently told
- 30:04Speaker 2: that there's no reason to think they won't enact at
- 30:06Speaker 2: least the first of those extensions and lease options that
- 30:11Speaker 2: would take you to 2041. The other thing to consider
- 30:14Speaker 2: here is that 2041 is the end of that first
- 30:17Speaker 2: option of the lease. It's 15 years from now. Vinod
- 30:19Speaker 2: Kozla and his wife Nero are 71 years old. Their
- 30:23Speaker 2: son Neil, in his late 30s, is probably going to
- 30:28Speaker 2: be the one who's the point man or the operator
- 30:30Speaker 2: of the franchise in the longer term. I mean, let's
- 30:34Speaker 2: just be real. It's two billionaires in their 80s probably
- 30:39Speaker 2: don't want to have a lot to do with the
- 30:41Speaker 2: daily operation.
- 30:43Speaker 4: Of a football team. Yeah, we all see the writing
- 30:44Speaker 4: on that wall. I mean, it makes sense.
- 30:48Speaker 2: Here's another thing to consider about the Kozels. AI. They are...
- 30:53Speaker 2: Vinod Khosla was one of the foremost and leading investors
- 30:57Speaker 2: in artificial intelligence when it first came on the scene 10,
- 31:00Speaker 2: 15 years ago, when it really became in the Bay
- 31:03Speaker 2: Area became a big deal. His son is the owner
- 31:07Speaker 2: and co-founder of a firm that does AI work in
- 31:10Speaker 2: the medical field. His wife has used AI in reading
- 31:17Speaker 2: and reading programs in a company that she has founded.
- 31:22Speaker 2: AI is coming to the Seahawks with this sale. And
- 31:26Speaker 2: what do I mean by that? I'm talking coaching. I'm
- 31:29Speaker 2: talking planning and training, nutrition, practice schedules, the way they travel,
- 31:37Speaker 2: the way they eat. AI is going to be a big,
- 31:41Speaker 2: big player in that. The Seahawks coaching staff feels they're
- 31:44Speaker 2: a little behind in this compared to, say, San Francisco,
- 31:47Speaker 2: which Fennel Kozla and his family were minority investors in
- 31:51Speaker 2: until this purchase of the Seahawks. Remember that Kozla has 3%.
- 31:54Speaker 2: Vinod Kozla had a 3% stake in the 49ers. Part
- 31:59Speaker 2: of the reason that the sale was unanimously approved is
- 32:02Speaker 2: that the NFL owners already had vetted Kozla because they
- 32:05Speaker 2: had to to make him a minority owner of the 49ers.
- 32:07Speaker 2: But the 49ers are ahead of the Seahawks in their
- 32:10Speaker 2: use of artificial intelligence and football operations. That's coming. That
- 32:15Speaker 2: might be a behind-the-scenes immediate impact to the Seahawks with
- 32:20Speaker 2: the new ownership chains that fans won't be able to see,
- 32:22Speaker 2: but the football ops and the coaches will. And I
- 32:25Speaker 2: think that's coming sooner than later now that they are
- 32:28Speaker 2: the new owners. 49451 on the Tacoma Dodge text line.
- 32:31Speaker 2: I get it. I bet we're going to hear some
- 32:34Speaker 2: consternation and some concern about out-of-town owners, their comments on
- 32:39Speaker 2: Lumen Field and thinking that that means the stadium is
- 32:42Speaker 2: changing or they're going to get a new one. I
- 32:44Speaker 2: get it. We've lived here in Seattle more than a day,
- 32:46Speaker 2: you know, from the Sonics' understanding. We'll read back your
- 32:49Speaker 2: text at 1130. Up next, Cooper Cupp talked about the
- 32:52Speaker 2: ownership chains as a native of Washington, a Yakima native,
- 32:55Speaker 2: a Davis High School graduate, an Eastern Washington University star
- 32:59Speaker 2: player over in Cheney. He talked about the meaning of
- 33:01Speaker 2: owning the Seahawks, the meaning of the Seahawks as a
- 33:04Speaker 2: Pacific Northwest entity, and about the loss of Jake Bobo
- 33:07Speaker 2: to a season-ending knee injury. You'll hear from Cooper Cupp next.
- 33:10Speaker 2: Just after 11 o'clock, you're going to hear from Mike
- 33:12Speaker 2: McDonald live here from 93.3 KJRFM. Hi, welcome back. Greg Bell,
- 33:35Speaker 2: Justin McIntyre with you. He's there every weekday, 10 a.m.
- 33:37Speaker 2: to noon here on 93.3 KJR FM. Although I will
- 33:40Speaker 2: not be here 10 a.m. to noon tomorrow, I am
- 33:43Speaker 2: flying to Kansas City day of the game. Flight leaves
- 33:46Speaker 2: at 8.30 or so. So Mike Benton will be here tomorrow.
- 33:49Speaker 2: He's going to interview Ryan Spielbros, who's one of the
- 33:52Speaker 2: commentators for the Amazon, or no, Apple TV, whatever, streaming
- 33:58Speaker 2: to it. Apple TV broadcast of the Mariners at Toronto tomorrow. So, yes,
- 34:03Speaker 2: the first game of the three-game series, Blue Jays and Mariners,
- 34:06Speaker 2: not on Mariners TV, not on your local normal way
- 34:09Speaker 2: to watch the Mariners. It's on Apple TV tomorrow. Ryan Spilbrose,
- 34:13Speaker 2: one of the NL's former Major League player, will join
- 34:15Speaker 2: Mike Benton and Jessamyn tomorrow. And I'll be flying to
- 34:19Speaker 2: Kansas City tomorrow. Covering for the News Tribune, I'll tell
- 34:22Speaker 2: you Monday what I saw in the final preseason game tomorrow.
- 34:24Speaker 2: Remember Factor Fiction? Remember that game? Guess along with us
- 34:29Speaker 2: on NFL and college football games with the spread or
- 34:32Speaker 2: the over-under. That contest starts Monday, September 7th, two days
- 34:36Speaker 2: before the Seahawks against the Patriots. So your chance during
- 34:40Speaker 2: every show from the morning all the way through to
- 34:45Speaker 2: Dave Softy Mahler and Dick Fane. so september the 7th
- 34:48Speaker 2: is the start of factor fix a lot of questions
- 34:50Speaker 2: on that cooper cup born and raised in yakima he
- 34:53Speaker 2: knows how important the seahawks are he calls it very
- 34:55Speaker 2: special to play for him he talked yesterday following practice so.
- 34:58Speaker 13: You're walking off with jay keats what do you think
- 35:00Speaker 13: he's adding to the quarterback or what kind of coach
- 35:02Speaker 13: is he and what do you think he's.
- 35:03Speaker 14: Adding um yeah i mean shoot he's a high energy
- 35:07Speaker 14: individual um and he knows a lot of football so
- 35:10Speaker 14: um you know i think there's a There's a lot
- 35:13Speaker 14: of stuff in that room in terms of the processing
- 35:16Speaker 14: that happens at the quarterback position. It's good to have
- 35:21Speaker 14: someone in there that has been in that spot before
- 35:24Speaker 14: that's also allowing Sam understands the amount of football that's
- 35:29Speaker 14: been played in that room and knowing what information needs
- 35:33Speaker 14: to be put on the table, what stuff can be
- 35:35Speaker 14: jumped over, just to give Sam, I think, the most
- 35:38Speaker 14: clarity possible.
- 35:40Speaker 2: We saw the uh clip of mike on your.
- 35:42Speaker 9: Office practice field in tennessee.
- 35:45Speaker 2: Uh has that happened to you before what was the
- 35:46Speaker 2: reaction when when he yeah you.
- 35:49Speaker 14: Know we're working through some stuff and so it's kind
- 35:51Speaker 14: of like uh you know i i understood where he
- 35:54Speaker 14: was coming from and um yeah it is what it
- 35:57Speaker 14: is i'm i trust mike and ultimately what uh he's
- 36:01Speaker 14: looking out for his for his guys for his team
- 36:03Speaker 14: and um so you know there's always a party that
- 36:05Speaker 14: wants to compete the competitor that wants to go out
- 36:07Speaker 14: there and um, go in those situations. Um, those practices
- 36:11Speaker 14: are a lot of fun. Um, but understand that that's
- 36:14Speaker 14: kind of, uh, some of you, you know, I, I,
- 36:17Speaker 14: I trust Mike. Does your mind go at all the
- 36:20Speaker 14: sliding doors of if you've been out there and what
- 36:22Speaker 14: happened with Jake and, and you not being out there? Uh, yeah,
- 36:27Speaker 14: I mean, that's, it's, um, but that's, that's an absolutely
- 36:34Speaker 14: awful situation. Um, and obviously everyone here feels for Jake.
- 36:38Speaker 9: Um, so, um, yeah.
- 36:43Speaker 13: Hey Cooper, you.
- 36:44Speaker 9: Teach a lot of the young guys, you know, give
- 36:46Speaker 9: them skills and stuff.
- 36:47Speaker 14: Have you seen anything from the new young wide receivers,
- 36:51Speaker 14: like anything from them that they've taught you or you've noticed? Um, yeah,
- 36:56Speaker 14: I mean, yeah, they're a lot of fun. Um, yeah, they, uh,
- 37:05Speaker 14: I mean, I think there's always stuff. There's always, I mean,
- 37:07Speaker 14: there's something you grab from everyone in terms of this,
- 37:09Speaker 14: you know, how you're seeing a stem of rust. Like,
- 37:11Speaker 14: you know, I've, I've run a certain route along for
- 37:13Speaker 14: a long time. Someone comes in and sees it, runs
- 37:16Speaker 14: it for the first time, the way they see it.
- 37:18Speaker 14: It's like, you know what? Like that, I never would
- 37:20Speaker 14: have ran it that way, but let's talk about it.
- 37:23Speaker 14: There's something that might be something to how you're approaching
- 37:26Speaker 14: that route.
- 37:28Speaker 9: And so that's cool.
- 37:28Speaker 14: And we've got guys that are very intentional in that way. Um,
- 37:31Speaker 14: they're not just out there doing things just to do them.
- 37:33Speaker 14: There's a reason behind them. And so, uh, yeah, you're always,
- 37:36Speaker 14: I mean, keeping an eye on things and, um, having
- 37:38Speaker 14: those conversations in our room.
- 37:40Speaker 9: Um, it makes it a lot of fun to, uh,
- 37:42Speaker 9: to talk ball.
- 37:43Speaker 12: Your perspective in your 10th year, what can you say
- 37:45Speaker 12: about perspective on the field, off the field?
- 37:48Speaker 9: I know it's a big question.
- 37:49Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 37:50Speaker 9: Uh, yeah, it is a big question.
- 37:51Speaker 14: I mean, um, and there's so much, I think the, uh,
- 37:56Speaker 14: I think things get, uh, I don't know what the
- 38:00Speaker 14: word is exactly. This is not the right way to
- 38:02Speaker 14: say it, but things become less.
- 38:08Speaker 9: Things aren't as pivotal. When you're young, every single play
- 38:12Speaker 9: holds away the world.
- 38:13Speaker 14: A win can put you in a place that you
- 38:19Speaker 14: feel like you've got it all figured out, which isn't
- 38:22Speaker 14: the right place to be. And then a loss in
- 38:24Speaker 14: a rep can make you feel like you'll never be
- 38:25Speaker 14: able to do it. And both those things are wrong.
- 38:29Speaker 14: But I think as time goes on, you realize it's
- 38:30Speaker 14: all a journey. It's all a process. It's all about
- 38:34Speaker 14: this build into who you're going to be and just
- 38:37Speaker 14: constantly responding to those opportunities that ultimately is what is
- 38:42Speaker 14: going to write the story, right? It's not the outcome
- 38:44Speaker 14: of the moment. It's how you're going to respond to
- 38:46Speaker 14: the string of moments that happen.
- 38:49Speaker 3: Cooper, as somebody from the active volunteer with the cell,
- 38:51Speaker 3: what does it mean to.
- 38:53Speaker 2: Have this next chapter, this team that's been with you
- 38:55Speaker 2: your whole life?
- 38:56Speaker 9: Yeah, well, you know, it's pretty cool.
- 38:58Speaker 14: I mean, I've talked a lot about growing up a
- 39:02Speaker 14: Seahawks fan and then eventually learning bedtime was when the
- 39:07Speaker 14: game ended. So then it became just I was rooting
- 39:09Speaker 14: for overtime at all times and just enjoying football. But
- 39:13Speaker 14: it's not missing me how cool it is to come
- 39:17Speaker 14: back to the state. I grew up here, spent 18
- 39:20Speaker 14: years of my life in Yakima, spent you know 23
- 39:26Speaker 14: years in the state of washington and um you know
- 39:29Speaker 14: that there's a lot of memories there's a lot of
- 39:32Speaker 14: people that came alongside me that helped get me to
- 39:35Speaker 14: where i am today so um it's definitely something that's
- 39:37Speaker 14: uh not missing me a very very special thing Yeah, so.
- 39:41Speaker 2: With that said, what does it mean that somebody wants
- 39:44Speaker 2: to spend $ 9 billion on a culture that was built
- 39:46Speaker 2: by this team?
- 39:47Speaker 9: Yeah, no, it's super cool. And yeah, I'm excited about that.
- 39:50Speaker 14: I think there's a lot of people that are, you know,
- 39:53Speaker 14: I think, you know, Jody was awesome in my time here.
- 40:01Speaker 9: And I know Mike absolutely loved working with her.
- 40:05Speaker 14: And I think there's also some excitement for what's, what
- 40:07Speaker 14: this new ownership group has, and I'm looking forward to
- 40:11Speaker 14: meeting them, seeing what their plans are for the team.
- 40:15Speaker 15: The leadership council Mike does, I'm sure a lot of
- 40:17Speaker 15: teams have some version of that. What do you like
- 40:19Speaker 15: about the way Mike does that? What do you feel
- 40:21Speaker 15: like you get as a team out of having those
- 40:23Speaker 15: meetings with him?
- 40:24Speaker 14: I think it's a great job of just creating an
- 40:26Speaker 14: open room for conversation. There's plenty of stuff on there
- 40:30Speaker 14: that you I'm sure don't see, that for sure you
- 40:34Speaker 14: don't see on hard knocks, but it's a great space
- 40:37Speaker 14: for conversation just for guys in every room around the
- 40:42Speaker 14: team to be able to have a say on how
- 40:44Speaker 14: guys are feeling, where guys are at, what they see,
- 40:46Speaker 14: if there's a need that needs to be met, if
- 40:48Speaker 14: there's something we can do better, and then we can
- 40:50Speaker 14: have that conversation, a truly open conversation about.
- 40:54Speaker 9: How we feel, and Mike does a great job of.
- 40:58Speaker 14: Being able to open that door for communication, not just
- 41:01Speaker 14: to go from coaches down, but to go to players
- 41:04Speaker 14: up as well.
- 41:05Speaker 2: When you're in Mike's office and he's picking your brain,
- 41:07Speaker 2: is that more you going like, hey, coach, I've seen something,
- 41:10Speaker 2: or is it him coming to you asking questions?
- 41:12Speaker 9: I think there's a little bit of both.
- 41:13Speaker 14: I mean, I think I probably ask more questions than
- 41:15Speaker 14: he's asking me questions. I mean, I've certainly asked him
- 41:18Speaker 14: more than he's asking me.
- 41:20Speaker 9: But it's just great.
- 41:20Speaker 14: I mean, he's got an open-door policy. At least I
- 41:23Speaker 14: think he does. I don't want to put him on
- 41:25Speaker 14: the spot. But, you know, guys going there, they've got
- 41:30Speaker 14: something to say. I mean, Mike's great about giving you
- 41:34Speaker 14: his time.
- 41:35Speaker 8: When you have a chance to speak to the Colson family,
- 41:37Speaker 8: what is it that you want to tell them about
- 41:38Speaker 8: what it feels to be a CNR?
- 41:41Speaker 9: Um, what do I want to tell them?
- 41:45Speaker 16: Oh, I don't know.
- 41:46Speaker 14: I mean, I think, I'm sure they've done their due diligence,
- 41:50Speaker 14: you know, on what we're about.
- 41:52Speaker 9: And what it's like in this building.
- 41:54Speaker 14: Um, and, you know, I think there's a reason why, um,
- 41:59Speaker 14: they want to be a part of it and see
- 42:02Speaker 14: the value in it. And so, um, I hopefully I
- 42:06Speaker 14: wouldn't have to say anything. They would just know that
- 42:08Speaker 14: there's something special here in terms of how we go
- 42:10Speaker 14: about our business. And, um, you know, actions speak louder
- 42:13Speaker 14: than words in that way.
- 42:14Speaker 2: Back to Bobo. What do you think your receiver core
- 42:16Speaker 2: will miss with him out? Yeah.
- 42:19Speaker 14: Um, and a lot, I mean, just, uh, I mean,
- 42:22Speaker 14: first and foremost, just the person that he is, um,
- 42:25Speaker 14: you know, it's, uh, that I think is the thing.
- 42:28Speaker 9: That, um, is overlooked upon all of this stuff, right?
- 42:32Speaker 14: It's like, you know, we're, we're a, a group of
- 42:35Speaker 14: men that come together every day to pursue a goal
- 42:38Speaker 14: and have our own lives that all, you know, coalesce
- 42:41Speaker 14: into the story that makes this season come alive. And
- 42:45Speaker 14: so not having him be a part of that story, um,
- 42:48Speaker 14: moving forward for this year is tough.
- 42:50Speaker 9: It was really hard.
- 42:51Speaker 14: And, um, you know, I know he's going to get
- 42:54Speaker 14: after things in terms of the rehab and all of
- 42:56Speaker 14: that stuff. Um, but just not, just not having bubble
- 42:59Speaker 14: the person, um, around us is, uh, it's been really tough.
- 43:03Speaker 2: Anything else, guys?
- 43:05Speaker 15: You've talked in the past about kind of with the
- 43:08Speaker 15: cerebral side of the game, all the studying, that coming
- 43:10Speaker 15: out of necessity.
- 43:11Speaker 2: You said you weren't the biggest guy, the fastest guy.
- 43:13Speaker 2: But other than that, you had to do it.
- 43:15Speaker 15: How much do you enjoy that side of finding those edges,
- 43:18Speaker 15: as Mike would say, and helping Mike unlock something on tape?
- 43:22Speaker 2: Is that fun for you to see that side of it?
- 43:23Speaker 9: Without a doubt it is.
- 43:24Speaker 14: I think that's one of the coolest parts about this
- 43:27Speaker 14: game is finding ways to And really, I think it's
- 43:30Speaker 14: just finding ways for the team to have an edge, right?
- 43:32Speaker 14: Finding something that comes alive in a game. And it's not...
- 43:38Speaker 14: I mean, it's almost better... I don't want to say
- 43:40Speaker 14: it's better when it's not even you that's the one
- 43:42Speaker 14: bringing it alive, but when you find a way for
- 43:45Speaker 14: someone else to have success and bring something.
- 43:49Speaker 14: Bring that edge and find success and find a way
- 43:52Speaker 14: to beat a team based on things that we collectively
- 43:56Speaker 14: work together to solve, that is.
- 43:59Speaker 9: that is my favorite thing in the world.
- 44:01Speaker 14: And so, um, yeah, that's, that's what, uh, you come
- 44:04Speaker 14: in and watch the film for us, what we communicate for.
- 44:06Speaker 14: That's what makes, you know, a team that wants to
- 44:09Speaker 14: collaborate together so much fun. If you came in here
- 44:12Speaker 14: and you just had to do exactly what the coaches
- 44:13Speaker 14: say with no say in terms of how it was
- 44:18Speaker 14: going to get done. Um, I don't know that I'd
- 44:21Speaker 14: still be playing football in all honesty. Um, so that
- 44:24Speaker 14: wouldn't be, that wouldn't be much fun for me, but, um,
- 44:27Speaker 14: being able to collaborate, being able to figure it out
- 44:28Speaker 14: together and work together, having guys in our room, players
- 44:33Speaker 14: that are open to asking questions and also giving suggestions.
- 44:37Speaker 14: That is what makes this game so much fun.
- 44:43Speaker 2: Yeah, come on, native. Cooper Kopp talking yesterday after practice,
- 44:46Speaker 2: and you heard him say it, and it bears repeating.
- 44:49Speaker 2: How about a shout-out to Jody Allen for what she
- 44:53Speaker 2: did and her stewardship? She didn't change anything from when
- 44:56Speaker 2: her brother– was owning the team and passed away in 2018.
- 45:01Speaker 2: And also, she moved this franchise forward. It was her
- 45:05Speaker 2: decision to fire Pete Carroll and hire a first-time head coach.
- 45:09Speaker 2: It was her decision to go with John Schneider's path
- 45:13Speaker 2: forward and not Pete Carroll's. Pete Carroll wanted to keep
- 45:15Speaker 2: the whole band together. He wanted to keep his coordinators.
- 45:17Speaker 2: He wanted to keep the system the same as it
- 45:19Speaker 2: had been for 15 years. It was Jody Allen who chose,
- 45:22Speaker 2: at that fork in the road, John Schneider. and his
- 45:25Speaker 2: path as a first-time GM gave him the ultimate football
- 45:28Speaker 2: authority for the first time, not Pete Carroll, fired Carroll,
- 45:32Speaker 2: and went behind and got behind Mike McDonald as the
- 45:36Speaker 2: new head coach. And here they are two years later,
- 45:38Speaker 2: Super Bowl champions. And that's Jody Allen. And she deserves
- 45:42Speaker 2: public recognition and admiration for that, for sure. Up next,
- 45:47Speaker 2: from the Seahawks headquarters in practice, practice is about to end,
- 45:50Speaker 2: and you'll hear live from Coach Mike McDonald before the
- 45:52Speaker 2: team gets on a plane for Kansas City. 1130, we'll

- 51:03Speaker 2: for $ 9. 61 billion in NFL record. They're not officially the
- 51:07Speaker 2: owners yet until the lawyers and the bankers get done
- 51:11Speaker 2: with processing the money. That's expected to happen in the
- 51:14Speaker 2: next week or so, perhaps later. on the date of
- 51:17Speaker 2: the opening game, September 9th against New England. Seahawks practice yesterday.
- 51:21Speaker 2: Rookie third-round pick Julian Neal was in full pads, appearing
- 51:24Speaker 2: to be full go. He's missed most of training camp
- 51:25Speaker 2: with a leg injury. He could be a candidate to
- 51:28Speaker 2: join Mike McDonald's search for a third cornerback. That includes
- 51:32Speaker 2: Terryon Arnold signing in the next couple days. And Trayvon Diggs,
- 51:36Speaker 2: who was full go yesterday, who signed last week, the
- 51:38Speaker 2: former All-Pro with the Cowboys. The NFL's getting ready to
- 51:41Speaker 2: the Pro Bowl finally. Going to have 88 players that
- 51:44Speaker 2: are selected for contract signings. incentive clause purposes. Phillies made
- 51:49Speaker 2: quick work of Brian Wu. Six runs allowed by Wu
- 51:51Speaker 2: in two innings. That's all the Phillies needed to win
- 51:54Speaker 2: yesterday at the yard. First loss of the season at
- 51:56Speaker 2: home for Wu, 7-1 now at the yard. Seattle shut
- 52:00Speaker 2: out for the 13th time this season, but stayed just
- 52:02Speaker 2: two and a half back of first place in the
- 52:04Speaker 2: AL West because the Trash Cans lost two. Mariners traveled
- 52:07Speaker 2: late at Toronto weekend series against the Blue Jays. Eugenio
- 52:12Speaker 2: Suarez waved by the Reds last night. He's owed $ 3
- 52:16Speaker 2: million for the rest of the season. Yeah, I know
- 52:19Speaker 2: he strikes out a lot, but he also has a
- 52:21Speaker 2: lot of good vibes when he's in Seattle. What do
- 52:23Speaker 2: you think, Mariner fans?
- 52:26Speaker 4: I do like the good vibes.
- 52:27Speaker 2: 49451. Yeah, that's true. They are starting to vibe, but
- 52:34Speaker 2: bring them in. Why not? Less than $ 3 million for
- 52:39Speaker 2: a month. It might get you into the playoffs. Bring
- 52:41Speaker 2: Suarez back. It's not like he hasn't had big hits
- 52:44Speaker 2: for this team either. Grand slams in the playoffs. We're
- 52:48Speaker 2: awaiting Mike McDonald, the head coach of the Seahawks, as
- 52:51Speaker 2: they come off the practice field here in Renton. When
- 52:55Speaker 2: he goes for his press conference, we will join it live,
- 52:58Speaker 2: and I'll run out and ask him questions like, who's
- 53:01Speaker 2: going to play tomorrow? It's not going to be any
- 53:03Speaker 2: of the 22 starters. I've already been told that. It's
- 53:05Speaker 2: not going to be Jadarian Price, the rookie first-round pick.
- 53:08Speaker 2: I've already been told that. So what are they looking at? Well,
- 53:11Speaker 2: third cornerback again. Is Trayvon Diggs going to be able
- 53:14Speaker 2: to play? He hadn't been in pads since January. When
- 53:17Speaker 2: I asked him last week, could he play in this
- 53:19Speaker 2: Chiefs game, he said maybe. This is the final chance
- 53:25Speaker 2: for guys like Montori Foster, who I think is already
- 53:27Speaker 2: on the team. Guys like Aiden Hubbard, who we talked
- 53:30Speaker 2: to early in training camp, the undrafted rookie. The guy
- 53:33Speaker 2: like Uso Seomalo, the nose tackle, undrafted rookie. This is
- 53:37Speaker 2: their final chance to make the team tomorrow night in
- 53:39Speaker 2: Kansas City. I will be there at Arrowhead Stadium. I'm
- 53:42Speaker 2: flying out tomorrow, which is why Mike Benton will have
- 53:45Speaker 2: the show tomorrow from 10 to noon with Jessamyn, and
- 53:48Speaker 2: I'll be in Kansas City for the final preseason game.
- 53:52Speaker 2: But this is a trend around the league that most
- 53:54Speaker 2: coaches don't play their starters. Andy Reid is not going
- 53:58Speaker 2: to play their chief starters tomorrow, including Kenneth Walker, who's
- 54:01Speaker 2: had a foot and ankle injury. He's not going to
- 54:04Speaker 2: play tomorrow against his former team. We talked to Farhan
- 54:07Speaker 2: Lalji this week. He was at Chiefs camp last week,
- 54:10Speaker 2: and he said that they were giving Walker the full
- 54:12Speaker 2: meal deal. They were splitting him out wide. They were
- 54:15Speaker 2: throwing the ball down the field. And that he doesn't
- 54:18Speaker 2: see a viable backup running back, which would suggest that
- 54:22Speaker 2: Walker's going to be a three-down back. Everything he's always
- 54:25Speaker 2: wanted in this league and didn't get last year when
- 54:28Speaker 2: he was splitting time with Zach Charbonnet. But you won't
- 54:31Speaker 2: see Kenneth Walker tomorrow. You're not going to see Patrick
- 54:33Speaker 2: Mahomes tomorrow. You're going to see Garrett Nussmeyer. son of
- 54:38Speaker 2: former Huskies offensive coordinator. Garrett Nussmeyer from LSU is going
- 54:42Speaker 2: to be the quarterback tomorrow to start the game for
- 54:45Speaker 2: the Chiefs, I'm told, against the Seahawks second or third string.
- 54:50Speaker 2: So it's a good day. If you have a dog,
- 54:53Speaker 2: walk it. If you don't have a dog, go to
- 54:54Speaker 2: the shelter or adopt one and walk it. Because a
- 55:00Speaker 2: lot of the guys playing tomorrow are not going to
- 55:01Speaker 2: be on the team Saturday or Sunday when the cuts
- 55:04Speaker 2: are due. 90-53. Deadline cut day is Sunday. That's the
- 55:09Speaker 2: 30th of August. And then week and a half until
- 55:13Speaker 2: the Seahawks play the first NFL game against the New
- 55:17Speaker 2: England Patriots. Remember, we are going to start our Factor
- 55:19Speaker 2: Fiction contest on September the 7th, the week of the
- 55:23Speaker 2: Seahawks opener, the week of the first NFL games. I
- 55:26Speaker 2: know college football begins this week. And then next week,
- 55:29Speaker 2: college football here in Seattle begins with the Apple Cup,
- 55:32Speaker 2: Washington State and Washington on the Sunday of Labor Day weekend.
- 55:36Speaker 2: That's going to be September the 6th at Husky Stadium
- 55:38Speaker 2: at 1 o'clock. We'll have it live, of course, here
- 55:40Speaker 2: on 93.3 KJR with Elyse Woodward's debut as the voice
- 55:45Speaker 2: of the Huskies. And then a day after that, September
- 55:47Speaker 2: the 7th on Monday, Labor Day, we will begin the
- 55:50Speaker 2: Factor Fiction Contest for the week. Who's going to be
- 55:53Speaker 2: the first one that picks in four-factor fiction, the Seahawks opener? Hmm.
- 56:00Speaker 2: I don't think I'll do that. Yeah. Because then you're
- 56:04Speaker 2: a Wednesday game? Fact or fiction? You're already in a
- 56:08Speaker 2: hole or you're already up one. Ian might do that.
- 56:11Speaker 2: He could.
- 56:12Speaker 4: There's a good chance.
- 56:13Speaker 2: Or you might do that. No, no.
- 56:16Speaker 4: Well, I have to do NFL.
- 56:19Speaker 2: You can't do college?
- 56:20Speaker 16: No.
- 56:21Speaker 2: No.
- 56:22Speaker 4: I won't do it.
- 56:23Speaker 6: There's probably no one that would figure it out, but
- 56:25Speaker 6: I can't do it. I mean, it's just like Ian
- 56:27Speaker 6: would never bet on an NHL game or something like that.
- 56:30Speaker 2: Yeah, well, that's in his contract as an employee, right? Well,
- 56:33Speaker 2: he's not betting, though. He's advising, but he's not actually
- 56:36Speaker 2: putting money down.
- 56:37Speaker 6: No, I think he specifically said if he goes to
- 56:39Speaker 6: Snoqualmie Casino, he would never put money down. I feel
- 56:44Speaker 6: unethical doing college football, so that's why I stay away
- 56:47Speaker 6: from it.
- 56:48Speaker 2: I see. I do not feel unethical about Army and
- 56:51Speaker 2: the Under. You're going to hear that a few times.
- 56:53Speaker 4: Well, you're not working for them.
- 56:56Speaker 7: No, I'm not.
- 56:57Speaker 2: Used to. No, I'm not. He sure did. 49451 on
- 57:02Speaker 2: the Tacoma Dodge text line. The question I just kind
- 57:04Speaker 2: of threw in there at the end of headlines. How
- 57:06Speaker 2: do you feel about Eugenio Suarez? Eugenio Suarez is now
- 57:09Speaker 2: a free agent if he clears waivers, which he will,
- 57:12Speaker 2: almost certainly. Or they could just claim him off waivers.
- 57:15Speaker 2: He's on waivers for 48 hours in Major League Baseball
- 57:18Speaker 2: after you're put on it the next day or so.
- 57:20Speaker 2: Should the Mariners claim him? Or do you think he'd
- 57:23Speaker 2: pass waivers and be a free agent and sign him
- 57:25Speaker 2: that way? But If you claim him, it's a little
- 57:27Speaker 2: less than $ 3 million for the rest of the season,
- 57:30Speaker 2: the final 28 games. We know about good vibes only
- 57:34Speaker 2: and Suarez and what he did again coming back last
- 57:37Speaker 2: year in the playoffs, hitting a grand slam in the AOC.
- 57:39Speaker 2: We know all that. I know a lot of fans
- 57:42Speaker 2: would want him back. What about you on the text line?
- 57:46Speaker 2: Does it take away some at-bats for younger guys? Are
- 57:49Speaker 2: they going to bring up Michael Arroyo as a September call-up?
- 57:52Speaker 2: And would Suarez arriving take some at-bats from Arroyo perhaps?
- 57:57Speaker 2: something to consider, but I say, bring him back, Jess.
- 58:01Speaker 4: I don't see the downside of it.
- 58:03Speaker 2: I really don't.
- 58:06Speaker 22: Yeah.
- 58:06Speaker 2: And, and he doesn't have to be an everyday player. He, he,
- 58:09Speaker 2: maybe he would be, but, or he could be a
- 58:11Speaker 2: designated hitter or split it with Ken's own or I, yeah,
- 58:16Speaker 2: but just, he's almost worth it to sign for the
- 58:19Speaker 2: environment in the clubhouse.
- 58:22Speaker 4: That's where I am. I mean, and then anything else
- 58:24Speaker 4: is a bonus, right?
- 58:27Speaker 2: Four, nine, four, five, one. How do you feel about that? Okay.
- 58:32Speaker 2: I see on the text line, you were asking if
- 58:34Speaker 2: I'm broadcasting from jail, interviewing Jed York.
- 58:39Speaker 4: Oh, that's pretty good.
- 58:41Speaker 2: No, that was in a, we're in the side room
- 58:44Speaker 2: of the media room here at the Seahawks. And it's
- 58:46Speaker 2: just a white wall room with four white walls and
- 58:48Speaker 2: very small. So there's an echo. We try to minimize
- 58:52Speaker 2: that in different ways, but that's what that is. Two, five, three, six, seven,
- 58:56Speaker 2: 253 says, what are the chances the Seahawks trade or
- 59:01Speaker 2: cut Melrose? Trade is almost nothing because what value would
- 59:04Speaker 2: he have for another team? Teams are really reluctant to trade.
- 59:09Speaker 2: a guy who's still only halfway through, not even halfway
- 59:14Speaker 2: through his four-year rookie contract. A third-round pick, he's only
- 59:17Speaker 2: in his second training camp. Yes, the 2-5-3 says he's
- 59:21Speaker 2: been terrible in preseason game. He has not had the
- 59:23Speaker 2: preseason he wants. I think he's going to play the
- 59:25Speaker 2: entire game tomorrow. We're standing by for Mike McDonald's press
- 59:28Speaker 2: conference to start in which he may tell us that
- 59:32Speaker 2: he's given Milrow the start and play the whole game,
- 59:34Speaker 2: just like he did in the third preseason game last
- 59:36Speaker 2: summer in Green Bay, it'll be the last time Milrow
- 59:40Speaker 2: plays this year. I mean, this is the last opportunity
- 59:43Speaker 2: they have to evaluate him going forward versus Drew Locke.
- 59:47Speaker 2: Drew Locke, of course, we've talked about this. His contract
- 59:50Speaker 2: ends after this year, and they have to decide, based
- 59:53Speaker 2: largely on these preseason games and what Locke has done
- 59:56Speaker 2: for them in the past, whether they want to re-sign him.
- 1:00:00Speaker 2: be on this year. He's 29. We talked about the
- 1:00:02Speaker 2: fact that he would like to play and be a
- 1:00:04Speaker 2: starter again. He was pressed into duty as a starter
- 1:00:07Speaker 2: with the Giants a couple years ago when Daniel Jones
- 1:00:09Speaker 2: got hurt. He didn't sign with the Giants to be
- 1:00:11Speaker 2: a starter. Jones was the starter there. But Locke would
- 1:00:15Speaker 2: like to play again. He's told me that. He's told
- 1:00:17Speaker 2: others that on the record that he would like to
- 1:00:20Speaker 2: play again. Of course he would. He's only 29. So
- 1:00:23Speaker 2: the decision on Milrow, is he the future backup quarterback,
- 1:00:28Speaker 2: largely will be The final audition before the decision on
- 1:00:32Speaker 2: Drew Locke is tomorrow night in Kansas City for Jalen Milrow. So, no,
- 1:00:37Speaker 2: they're not going to– I don't believe they're going to– no,
- 1:00:39Speaker 2: I don't even believe. I'm pretty– almost guarantee they're not
- 1:00:42Speaker 2: going to cut him. They're certainly not going to trade
- 1:00:44Speaker 2: him because, one, he doesn't have a lot of trade value, and, two,
- 1:00:48Speaker 2: he still has two and a half years left on
- 1:00:51Speaker 2: this rookie– three seasons left on his rookie conduct. Fifth
- 1:00:56Speaker 2: offensive coordinator in five years. I've talked to Jalen Miller
- 1:00:59Speaker 2: about that. He doesn't use it as an excuse. It's
- 1:01:01Speaker 2: just a fact that every year he's under a different
- 1:01:04Speaker 2: scheme of plays, different tonology, and sometimes different systems. And
- 1:01:09Speaker 2: though Brian Fleury's system is very similar to what Seahawks
- 1:01:14Speaker 2: ran with Kubiak, that's how. Up next, Mike Mono, head
- 1:01:18Speaker 2: coach of the Seahawks, live on 90.3 KJRF.

- 1:05:00Speaker 21: The day-to-day, really just how much he's invested into our
- 1:05:04Speaker 21: team and really his teammates. And I'm really, really excited
- 1:05:09Speaker 21: to have it happen. I mean, it's really great news.
- 1:05:11Speaker 21: So I understand he hasn't signed yet. He's going to
- 1:05:13Speaker 21: sign here within the hour, and everybody's going to celebrate.
- 1:05:17Speaker 21: It's a great deal for everybody, and we're excited to
- 1:05:19Speaker 21: make it happen. Some of the best in the world.
- 1:05:33Speaker 21: His production is high, but it's also a synergistic thing
- 1:05:37Speaker 21: where I feel like the way he plays sets up
- 1:05:39Speaker 21: other players as well, both in the run and pass.
- 1:05:44Speaker 21: Let alone how he interacts, just how he builds up
- 1:05:47Speaker 21: the whole team on a day-to-day basis too. So again,
- 1:05:51Speaker 21: I think it's a great deal for both sides and
- 1:05:54Speaker 21: he's earned it and we're excited to make it happen. Man,
- 1:06:03Speaker 21: I have a hard time thinking people, it's hard to
- 1:06:06Speaker 21: not see what he does. It's interesting that you guys
- 1:06:08Speaker 21: are asking those questions. He's an absolute force that people
- 1:06:13Speaker 21: have to account for. And when you do that, that
- 1:06:15Speaker 21: takes resources. towards him, and he can win those matchups.
- 1:06:20Speaker 21: And when you allocate resources one way, you can't allocate
- 1:06:25Speaker 21: them another way, and now our other guys have opportunities.
- 1:06:27Speaker 21: So not only is he making a ton of plays,
- 1:06:30Speaker 21: he's setting his teammates up for making plays as well,
- 1:06:33Speaker 21: and we play better defense with him for sure. Yeah,
- 1:06:35Speaker 21: that's what I'm saying. He's a great teammate every day,
- 1:06:40Speaker 21: same guy, positive outlook. We talked about Warriors in the Garden,
- 1:06:46Speaker 21: who we want to be as people, and he's that.
- 1:06:50Speaker 21: That's who he is.
- 1:06:54Speaker 2: Speaking of allocating resources, I know that you.
- 1:06:56Speaker 16: Don't jump too much in the weeds when it comes
- 1:06:58Speaker 16: to the contract stuff, but how big of a deal
- 1:07:01Speaker 16: is it that.
- 1:07:01Speaker 2: You now have several more seasons where you get to
- 1:07:03Speaker 2: have Leo.
- 1:07:05Speaker 21: And Byron playing together and not have.
- 1:07:06Speaker 17: To worry about Byron having his pending contract and things
- 1:07:10Speaker 17: like that?
- 1:07:11Speaker 20: It's just hard to keep two high-priced DTs together and
- 1:07:14Speaker 20: having that luxury.
- 1:07:19Speaker 21: I'm very excited. Look, we want great players, great people.
- 1:07:24Speaker 21: We want Seahawks on our team, as many as we
- 1:07:25Speaker 21: can possibly have. You want to be able to pay
- 1:07:30Speaker 21: everybody as much as you possibly can. Obviously, there's limitations
- 1:07:33Speaker 21: on these things, which is why it's so important for
- 1:07:37Speaker 21: us to be able to keep as many Seahawks that
- 1:07:41Speaker 21: we feel like can help us out in our building
- 1:07:43Speaker 21: as we come down to this portion of the year
- 1:07:45Speaker 21: and really throughout the season. but when there's game-changing type
- 1:07:50Speaker 21: guys like Leo, like Spoon, like Jax, we had the
- 1:07:53Speaker 21: opportunity to lock them up for an extended period of
- 1:07:56Speaker 21: time and make them foundational pieces of our team. That's
- 1:07:59Speaker 21: got to fire you up. It's pretty awesome.
- 1:08:01Speaker 15: All those guys you just mentioned, Leo, Jax, they're all
- 1:08:03Speaker 15: in that leadership council that we've heard you.
- 1:08:05Speaker 21: Reference, but we saw it on Hard Knocks the other day.
- 1:08:07Speaker 15: For you as a couple years ago first-time head coach,
- 1:08:10Speaker 15: how valuable has that back and forth been with a
- 1:08:13Speaker 15: group of guys to get their feedback and not just.
- 1:08:15Speaker 2: Here's how I'm going to do it.
- 1:08:16Speaker 17: Yeah.
- 1:08:16Speaker 21: They, they, they've been great. Um, Charles is part of that, uh,
- 1:08:20Speaker 21: crew as well. And, uh, I've had a couple of
- 1:08:23Speaker 21: fun conversations since then. It turns out if you'd like,
- 1:08:27Speaker 21: if I, if I, if I, if we have a
- 1:08:29Speaker 21: leadership meeting, you can be excused from other responsibilities in
- 1:08:33Speaker 21: the building. Uh, so we've had, but no, the guys
- 1:08:38Speaker 21: have been great. They, uh, It's just, it's trying to create,
- 1:08:42Speaker 21: trying to create an atmosphere where we're all aligned in
- 1:08:46Speaker 21: how we're doing things. And so sometimes it's what's coming
- 1:08:49Speaker 21: down the pike. Sometimes it's, Hey, you know, maybe we
- 1:08:52Speaker 21: need to, maybe we need to veer. Sometimes it's coming
- 1:08:55Speaker 21: from me. Sometimes it's coming from the players. It's a,
- 1:08:58Speaker 21: team effort on getting the ship sailing in the right
- 1:09:02Speaker 21: direction at all times. I'm done now.
- 1:09:07Speaker 14: Sorry.
- 1:09:09Speaker 15: Have you guys already made your decision about whether Zach
- 1:09:11Speaker 15: Charbonnet is going to come off PUP, or is that
- 1:09:13Speaker 15: something that can still happen.
- 1:09:14Speaker 21: Before next week? We don't have any. Let's just say
- 1:09:18Speaker 21: we don't have any news on that front right now.
- 1:09:20Speaker 15: Nicky Mimori, when would he have to start practicing to
- 1:09:23Speaker 15: be available in week.
- 1:09:24Speaker 2: One for you guys?
- 1:09:24Speaker 21: Probably not going to answer that one.
- 1:09:28Speaker 2: How's Tori Horton doing?
- 1:09:30Speaker 21: Doing good. Doing good. All the injuries. You know me.
- 1:09:34Speaker 21: Injury stuff coming into week one. We're going to keep
- 1:09:37Speaker 21: it pretty close to the vest.
- 1:09:39Speaker 2: Has Tori's long-term injury been ruled out? Yeah. Leo's just
- 1:09:45Speaker 2: one of four guys. You have a friend who's played
- 1:09:47Speaker 2: 10-plus years. Chen is right there, too. What is that?
- 1:09:50Speaker 15: When you're, whether it's in-game, trying to adjust things or
- 1:09:52Speaker 15: plan things, just that level of experience you have.
- 1:09:55Speaker 2: Up front, what's that do for you?
- 1:09:56Speaker 21: Yeah, that's a great question. It's a fun group to
- 1:10:01Speaker 21: work with. And, you know, the trap is that you
- 1:10:04Speaker 21: have all this experience, which means you have a lot
- 1:10:06Speaker 21: of production and a lot of success individually, you know.
- 1:10:12Speaker 21: And so people... if you don't create the right environment,
- 1:10:16Speaker 21: you know, the right type of guys, you have a
- 1:10:17Speaker 21: lot of guys, you could end up in the trap
- 1:10:19Speaker 21: of people trying to kind of get theirs and ego
- 1:10:22Speaker 21: gets in the way. But you, you know, the guys
- 1:10:24Speaker 21: that you mentioned, the guys that are on our team,
- 1:10:27Speaker 21: they use it as a plus, you know, they use
- 1:10:28Speaker 21: it as a way to get the solutions and, um,
- 1:10:33Speaker 21: bring each other's games to another level, which is, which
- 1:10:35Speaker 21: makes the process a lot of fun. And I'm not
- 1:10:38Speaker 21: really in the weeds on how we do what we're
- 1:10:40Speaker 21: doing play to play, um, And how we're getting it cut,
- 1:10:44Speaker 21: just in the meetings and the details and all that.
- 1:10:46Speaker 21: AD does a phenomenal job, CP, Bynes, Hines, those guys.
- 1:10:50Speaker 21: It's a tremendous team partnership on how we utilize our front,
- 1:10:57Speaker 21: the techniques we do, how they prepare, all those things.
- 1:10:59Speaker 21: It's really cool.
- 1:11:00Speaker 2: Coach, well, they've proven experience.
- 1:11:01Speaker 15: It can be kind of tough for some of the
- 1:11:03Speaker 15: younger defensive linemen to really stand out, but JR Singleton
- 1:11:06Speaker 15: this past weekend led the team in tackles.
- 1:11:09Speaker 2: How have you seen him progress this year after last
- 1:11:12Speaker 2: year being a practice.
- 1:11:13Speaker 21: Squad the entire season? JR actually had a good camp
- 1:11:16Speaker 21: last year. To your point, being in a room with
- 1:11:22Speaker 21: veteran leaders is actually a great opportunity because those guys
- 1:11:27Speaker 21: don't need as many reps as the rest of the team.
- 1:11:29Speaker 21: You're going to take a ton of reps. If you
- 1:11:31Speaker 21: can take advantage of those opportunities... And then the rookie
- 1:11:36Speaker 21: dynamic and the rookie aspect of being in with vets.
- 1:11:40Speaker 21: You take care of the vets in the room, they're
- 1:11:41Speaker 21: taking care of you. There's a lot of knowledge that's
- 1:11:43Speaker 21: getting poured into you with the guys that we have
- 1:11:47Speaker 21: and the way that JR goes about his business. So
- 1:11:49Speaker 21: he's definitely taken advantage of it, and he's played good football.
- 1:11:52Speaker 21: He should be proud of himself.
- 1:11:54Speaker 3: We know Bud's out for the year with Freeno, obviously,
- 1:11:56Speaker 3: but how's he kind of doing and what's kind of the.
- 1:11:58Speaker 9: Outlook for him at this point?
- 1:12:01Speaker 21: I'm really impressed with Bud and his mentality. Bobo, too. Mason,
- 1:12:07Speaker 21: same way. Those guys are studs. I think their mentality
- 1:12:12Speaker 21: is just, hey, let's go attack. What's the next thing?
- 1:12:15Speaker 21: It's probably going to be surgery, and we'll go from there.
- 1:12:22Speaker 21: It hurts, but you're also rooting for him. You're going
- 1:12:25Speaker 21: to be beside him every step of the way. Judarian,
- 1:12:28Speaker 21: what have you thought of the camp he's in? Say
- 1:12:30Speaker 21: that again? What was the question about?
- 1:12:33Speaker 2: What are the general thoughts on the camp that he's had?
- 1:12:36Speaker 21: He's done a great job. He really has. All three downs.
- 1:12:41Speaker 21: He still means a rookie in terms of there's going
- 1:12:45Speaker 21: to be things that we're going to need to attack
- 1:12:47Speaker 21: in his game that will show itself in games. I
- 1:12:49Speaker 21: think we haven't been afforded the luxury of having the
- 1:12:55Speaker 21: bodies right now at running back to give him the
- 1:12:58Speaker 21: reps maybe in a game that we normally would give
- 1:13:00Speaker 21: to a rookie runner. But he's shown that we're really
- 1:13:04Speaker 21: confident in him going into week one. He's kind of
- 1:13:11Speaker 21: earned that decision for us to feel good about it,
- 1:13:14Speaker 21: even though just about any other circumstance, you definitely want
- 1:13:19Speaker 21: really any rookie to get preseason exposure and experience.
- 1:13:23Speaker 3: With Bobo out and Torrey down for the moment, how
- 1:13:26Speaker 3: do you view where your receiver spot is behind the
- 1:13:29Speaker 3: top three? Obviously, Montori's made an impression during camp, but
- 1:13:32Speaker 3: how do you see that group and what.
- 1:13:34Speaker 21: Are you looking for? It's a tough one. We're down
- 1:13:37Speaker 21: a couple guys right now. The whole room has done
- 1:13:42Speaker 21: a really good job. As much as you hate saying it,
- 1:13:50Speaker 21: there's opportunity for guys now that those guys aren't available
- 1:13:54Speaker 21: right now, but it'll be interesting. You know, again, it's, it's,
- 1:13:58Speaker 21: you're always in like team competition. It's not, it's never
- 1:14:01Speaker 21: a one for one. It's never, this guy doesn't go.
- 1:14:04Speaker 21: So this guy goes or we're swapping. It's always the
- 1:14:07Speaker 21: whole team, you know, it's even like between sides of
- 1:14:09Speaker 21: the ball, you know, you could now, now you're talking
- 1:14:11Speaker 21: about special teams types decisions where, you know, it's the,
- 1:14:14Speaker 21: it's the DB group or the outside linebacker. How does
- 1:14:16Speaker 21: that get involved with, you know, decisions that you're making
- 1:14:19Speaker 21: on who's dressing for you in games and what roles
- 1:14:21Speaker 21: are playing. So, that's why it's important not to count
- 1:14:24Speaker 21: numbers and to, you know, okay, I've made it, or
- 1:14:26Speaker 21: maybe I haven't made it because it's always, it's always
- 1:14:29Speaker 21: where you are and where your game is compared to
- 1:14:31Speaker 21: where you can take it to the next level. And
- 1:14:32Speaker 21: then what the team needs, you know, to go put
- 1:14:35Speaker 21: together the best squad we can to go play a game. So,
- 1:14:39Speaker 21: but we're excited about the guys we still have.
- 1:14:42Speaker 18: You now, since you now know that Bud's out for
- 1:14:44Speaker 18: the season, how do you feel about the rest of
- 1:14:46Speaker 18: the safety group in terms of trying to fill the different.
- 1:14:48Speaker 2: Roles that you had?
- 1:14:49Speaker 9: Yeah.
- 1:14:49Speaker 21: Yeah. It's really the same answer. It's really the same answer. It's,
- 1:14:55Speaker 21: We're excited about the guys we still have, and we'll
- 1:14:59Speaker 21: go from there. But like I said, after the game,
- 1:15:03Speaker 21: I think we're working through on how we can fill
- 1:15:06Speaker 21: Bud's role and how we envision Bud playing for us,
- 1:15:08Speaker 21: and that'll be a process that we haven't necessarily come
- 1:15:11Speaker 21: to all the solutions right now, and that's okay. It's
- 1:15:14Speaker 21: just something that we need to be aware of.
- 1:15:15Speaker 2: What's Trayvon Diggs showed you this week in.
- 1:15:18Speaker 21: Practice and how ready he might be? He's going to
- 1:15:21Speaker 21: get a look tomorrow. which is exciting. He's done a
- 1:15:24Speaker 21: good job. He's been having attention to detail, doing all
- 1:15:29Speaker 21: the things we're asking him to do. It's not an
- 1:15:32Speaker 21: easy ask coming from training, not with a club, to
- 1:15:37Speaker 21: coming in and trying to play high-level football, but given
- 1:15:40Speaker 21: the opportunities, definitely made the most of it, and we'll
- 1:15:43Speaker 21: see where it goes.
- 1:15:44Speaker 2: What does he show?
- 1:15:51Speaker 21: I think I think it's a similar answer that I
- 1:15:55Speaker 21: gave earlier in camp. It's, it's not, it's a, it's
- 1:15:59Speaker 21: not an easy position to just come in and play
- 1:16:01Speaker 21: to the level of our, of our vets. So we
- 1:16:03Speaker 21: just understand that he's on a different, different path, you know,
- 1:16:06Speaker 21: just keep attacking the things. It's not because we're, or
- 1:16:11Speaker 21: we are where we are right now with, you know,
- 1:16:12Speaker 21: everyone sees that the, you know, everyone sees that it's
- 1:16:16Speaker 21: transaction days in a few days. That's, it's not whatever,
- 1:16:21Speaker 21: however we decide to, to operate. That's not the end-all,
- 1:16:24Speaker 21: be-all with him. He's got to stay on track. Keep
- 1:16:29Speaker 21: taking your game to the low. Keep stacking wins. Stay
- 1:16:31Speaker 21: to the process. Trust it. We'll see where his career
- 1:16:36Speaker 21: can go, but he can definitely play in this league
- 1:16:38Speaker 21: for sure.
- 1:16:38Speaker 2: Related to that, the effort play that Peely made in
- 1:16:41Speaker 2: the red zone the other night to draw the holding play,
- 1:16:44Speaker 2: what does Peely do?
- 1:16:48Speaker 21: Peely's done a great job. He's a I mean, it's
- 1:16:52Speaker 21: been a journey with him since he's gotten here, but
- 1:16:53Speaker 21: he's really applied himself, and I think he's taken his
- 1:16:57Speaker 21: game to the level. It's one of those things where
- 1:16:58Speaker 21: we take a lot of pride in our players playing
- 1:17:01Speaker 21: their best football when they're with us, and I think
- 1:17:03Speaker 21: he's definitely an example of that. He's shown when you
- 1:17:06Speaker 21: stick to the process and you trust it and you
- 1:17:08Speaker 21: have an honest way about going about your work, you
- 1:17:12Speaker 21: can really excel, and that's what he's doing right now.
- 1:17:15Speaker 2: What have you thought of the preseason of Bo's.
- 1:17:19Speaker 21: Defense? Yeah, Bo's coming along great. He's really applying a
- 1:17:23Speaker 21: lot of competition to his room, really excited about where
- 1:17:29Speaker 21: he is and his trajectory. He's got a great career
- 1:17:33Speaker 21: ahead of him. I really believe that. Just plays of
- 1:17:37Speaker 21: chasing the ball and finishing plays. You can tell he's
- 1:17:40Speaker 21: got the right mentality, so he's going to be a
- 1:17:42Speaker 21: good player.
- 1:17:42Speaker 2: Coach, it was last week, but we saw it on
- 1:17:45Speaker 2: Hard Knocks. You referenced your mentor, O.J. Progrance.
- 1:17:48Speaker 18: When you were breaking down the team, you were saying,
- 1:17:51Speaker 18: we owe it to him.
- 1:17:52Speaker 2: To be ourselves.
- 1:17:54Speaker 15: What way did your mentor shape the way that you
- 1:17:57Speaker 15: have that as your value system?
- 1:18:00Speaker 21: Actually, Daniel Stern put together a video for the team.
- 1:18:03Speaker 21: Hard Knocks did a great job editing it, but there
- 1:18:07Speaker 21: was a video we showed to the team I just
- 1:18:10Speaker 21: painted a great picture about who OJ was and what
- 1:18:14Speaker 21: he meant to not only the Ravens, but really everybody
- 1:18:18Speaker 21: that he came in contact with. I think OJ had
- 1:18:21Speaker 21: such a great perspective on life and such a great
- 1:18:25Speaker 21: spirit about him. There was a strength behind everything that
- 1:18:27Speaker 21: he did. I got kind of like a fierce love
- 1:18:30Speaker 21: behind just how he lived his life. He didn't have
- 1:18:35Speaker 21: to pour into everybody that he did. He had a
- 1:18:37Speaker 21: lot of stuff going on, but the way that he
- 1:18:40Speaker 21: did and invested in all those people's lives, I mean,
- 1:18:43Speaker 21: I think that speaks volumes about who he is and
- 1:18:46Speaker 21: where his priorities lied, and I think he set a
- 1:18:48Speaker 21: great example for everybody. I'm actually really happy that they
- 1:18:52Speaker 21: included that scene in the show because I think his message,
- 1:18:57Speaker 21: his legacy is able to reach as many people as possible,
- 1:19:00Speaker 21: which is really powerful and we'll all be better for it.
- 1:19:04Speaker 2: Anything else? Thank you.
- 1:19:08Speaker 4: There you have it. Mike McDonald, live from VMAC. We
- 1:19:11Speaker 4: do appreciate you listening.
- 1:19:12Speaker 6: We got Ian Furness coming up next. He is live
- 1:19:14Speaker 6: from 32 Bar and Grill. Everett Petit, Brandon Montour, Eno Saris,
- 1:19:18Speaker 6: and Brandon Funston all going to highlight that show.
