Transcript
- 0:00All right, good afternoon. Welcome Miller and Condon on a
- 0:03Monday. The Iowa Sports Radio Network
- 0:06back in action for the six next six hours of Iowa based
- 0:10programming and we appreciate you starting your afternoon with
- 0:13us. Trent Condon, Ken Miller, take
- 0:16you one till 2. Here's what's coming up on our
- 0:19program. Bill Seals covers Iowa State on
- 0:21three media cyclonereport.com. Bill will join us at 12:25.
- 0:26The Cyclones go down to the Bearcats in Cincinnati on
- 0:29Saturday. Today, look ahead to Colorado
- 0:31this weekend. That's a 230 kick.
- 0:33I was staying about a 3 1/2 point favorite in that game.
- 0:37As we sit here just after noon on a Monday, Bill Seals and then
- 0:41Nick Athen from chiefsblitz.com will give us a preview of Jags
- 0:45and Chiefs. That line is fishy, 3 1/2.
- 0:49The Chiefs are favored despite looking as good as they did last
- 0:51week. So we'll talk to Nick.
- 0:53Guessing he'll like the Chiefs. Just a thought probably, but
- 0:57we'll talk to Nick at 12:45 and then Bama, Trent and I will go
- 1:01around college football. How about UCLA?
- 1:03What a win, good for Jerry Neuheisel, One of those moments
- 1:07in college football that makes it so special.
- 1:10And and then we'll start talk to Scott Doctorman.
- 1:13He put out his first College Football Playoff projections at
- 1:16the Athletic. Those went over well, as you can
- 1:18well imagine. And talk about Iowa in the Big
- 1:2010 with Doc coming up here at 1:30.
- 1:22Mr. Monday Night will join us coming up about 10 minutes or so
- 1:26before 2. We'll get baseball in here.
- 1:28At some point we have to find time to talk about the the
- 1:31wildest story of the weekend. It wasn't on the gridiron, so
- 1:34the guy was supposed to be in the booth calling one of those
- 1:36games. This Mark Sanchez story just is.
- 1:37It gets worse and worse for him. It truly does.
- 1:40So don't want to start the show with that, but have to bring it
- 1:43up at some point. Good God, Iowa State they it was
- 1:48it was going to be a tough spot. I thought the whole time for
- 1:50them to without their starting quarterbacks.
- 1:53They Cincinnati ran absolutely they did whatever they wanted on
- 1:57the ground in the 1st 30 minutes.
- 1:59Iowa State made some adjustments took that away.
- 2:02Rocco Beck to stats say he was had a really good day.
- 2:05He missed a lot of throws. He's still a tough Sobi.
- 2:08Got to give somebody credit on our favorite Hawkeye board,
- 2:11Hawkeye Lounge compared his toughness to CJ Beathard.
- 2:14I thought that's pretty good. Of course, the folks on the
- 2:17board didn't think so because can't compare a Cyclone to a
- 2:19Hawkeye. But that shot that he took, my
- 2:22good God. And he went, went to the tent,
- 2:24came right back out and right back onto the field.
- 2:26He is a tough SOB. And that's the thing I liked
- 2:28about Beathard most of all during his career.
- 2:31But Iowa State goes down. Look, here's the thing.
- 2:34They're five and one. Not many Cyclone fans, every
- 2:37Cyclone fans, I'll rephrase it. Every cyclone fan would have
- 2:40signed for five and one at this point you're in the season 2
- 2:43wins that you didn't think you'd get without.
- 2:45OK state's toss up. I was a toss up blah, blah blah.
- 2:48They went their way and and away we go.
- 2:51But five and one now off to take on the Colorado team.
- 2:55Sounds like maybe Dion's health is is acting up again coaching
- 3:00on the on the field on Saturday night without a shoe on.
- 3:03And he said after the game that the blood clots he thinks are
- 3:07returning to his leg. And if anyone would know, it
- 3:09would be him because he just experienced it and had to have a
- 3:12tow or two amputated. But anyways, what a weekend of
- 3:15college football. We'll get to the NFL coming up.
- 3:17It's your thoughts on Iowa State, what you saw.
- 3:19You know, the there were so many disappointing aspects, you know,
- 3:22of the game and coming roaring back, had the score to make it
- 3:263115 going in the half and kind of felt like they had, yeah, I
- 3:31know a lot of people were upset, not going for two, cutting it to
- 3:359. It was still the middle of the
- 3:36third quarter and you knew you were still going to have to
- 3:38score. But in a game where in the
- 3:42second-half, Cincinnati when it combined one for 9 on 3rd and
- 3:464th downs, one big play and we know the one completion, that
- 3:51one third, third down conversion that they had.
- 3:53Over the top to goody. And beat two guys that we really
- 3:56like. Yeah, Patton.
- 3:57Patton and Neil, yeah, those were the backside and they,
- 4:00neither of them were close and you're not sure if it was Patton
- 4:02passing it off to somebody or what it was, but both of them,
- 4:05we saw the back of their jerseys.
- 4:07They were. Were they creeping up trying to
- 4:08stop the run? Because they obviously did.
- 4:10That it was third and eight, you know, Yeah, that's true.
- 4:12It was third and eight. Play.
- 4:13You're not. You're not creeping up.
- 4:14You're not expecting the run. And then for it all to end
- 4:19stepping out of bounds you. Know that was weird right now I
- 4:23know he was surrounded Bramer and I'm not going to kill him
- 4:28because look it would it's how many one in 100 that that play
- 4:31works. But there is the one, there is
- 4:35the one, there is the one. But.
- 4:37He was there, a cyclone within 10 yards of him.
- 4:40Well. I I mean, I guess I'd have to
- 4:43look again. Who cares?
- 4:45You know if you step out of bounds you lose.
- 4:46The game's over. Who cares if there's nobody
- 4:49within 80 yards of you? You got to try something.
- 4:51You can't just step out of bounds.
- 4:53No, it's not like he stepped out of bounds.
- 4:55He ran out of bounds, right? Yeah.
- 4:56That, that even makes it even worse.
- 4:58Now, if you're kind of you're pushed out, OK, you could get a
- 5:02hand of the ball to Chuck it back, whatever it is, but that.
- 5:04It was weird, I'll give you that.
- 5:05It was weird. I just, I hated that we didn't
- 5:09get the opportunity, that we didn't get the chance to see
- 5:12something crazy that could have happened.
- 5:13And it just, I don't know that really.
- 5:15Knowing Iowa State, they would have pulled it off and missed
- 5:18the two point. Conversion, right, right.
- 5:20That's how that thing would have ended, right?
- 5:22In that fashion. And the people that were holding
- 5:24the Cincinnati tickets -2 and a half, oh boy, that would have
- 5:27been that's what. The game kicked at 2 and a.
- 5:29Half. There was a lot of 2 1/2 during
- 5:30the morning. I'm not sure officially what
- 5:32different places had, but I did see some 2 1/2 Saturday morning.
- 5:37The other part that was just befuddling and it was more in
- 5:40the first half than the second, missed.
- 5:42Half it was trend was God awful. That was one of the worst.
- 5:45Look at the roads there. Oh yes.
- 5:47I mean in 10 years now Haycock, that was his poor of just
- 5:51fundamental football that they had guys not it wasn't even the
- 5:56cornerbacks. It was just.
- 5:58It was. Veterans.
- 5:59It was veterans there, not making a play, stepping up,
- 6:02getting run over by Walker. It is time in and time.
- 6:05Speaking of getting run over by Walker and you never see it
- 6:08called, is that offensive targeting?
- 6:14It's not. They don't call it.
- 6:15But but doesn't by the by the letter of the rule, it's going
- 6:19to say the law of the rule, doesn't it?
- 6:21Wasn't that targeting to you? I mean he put his head down with
- 6:24the crown of the helmet and that Willis between his numbers and
- 6:27he went for a ride. I mean, he was depleted.
- 6:30I don't even know if you can. Can you get targeted?
- 6:32Yes, I'm sure it's in the rule book.
- 6:34But that wasn't targeting to the helmet.
- 6:36No, but if you if you lead with the crown of your helmet that's
- 6:39targeting and he got him right, you know, right below the head,
- 6:44maybe in the the top of his numbers right between the one
- 6:49and the four. I mean, he just, I, when I saw
- 6:52it, I thought, you know, this is a play you used to see a lot.
- 6:57And I I know there's offensive targeting.
- 6:59Now this is what popped up for me.
- 7:02Initiating forcible contact with the crown of the helmet or
- 7:05making forcible contact with the head or neck area of a
- 7:08defenseless player. No, he's, he's making a tackle.
- 7:10Right. And because of that, maybe
- 7:13that's the reason. But but he checks all the boxes
- 7:16for. The first, the first part of it
- 7:17yet right, but a guy trying to make it.
- 7:19And look at, I'm not saying this makes a difference in the
- 7:21football game. Yeah, That, that's not, that's
- 7:23not why they lost. No, they couldn't tackle
- 7:26anybody. They it was just a terrible
- 7:28tackling day all around. Obviously now you have to worry
- 7:31about Hanson as he left the he left the playing field.
- 7:34Was it late in the 1st? Half and I was OK with sama I
- 7:38mean the. Jump actually played pretty
- 7:39well, didn't he? He ran NS better.
- 7:41It wasn't now the one. The other big play outside of
- 7:44the jump play, which was incredible as he got the first
- 7:47down on that one was up to the left side.
- 7:49He got the edge, but that was just making the right.
- 7:51That wasn't him going east West to go east West because that's
- 7:54been the knock on the boost first.
- 7:56Couple of years, yeah. It was always other than when it
- 7:58snows when he can't quite as easily he though on that plate.
- 8:04It was a beautiful read. I'm not as big of a Hanson fan
- 8:08as you are and I'm OK. As if a Boo sama can do make
- 8:13those right reads. No, I was impressed with him.
- 8:15Trenton was this best game maybe since the K State game.
- 8:18Yes, I didn't think it was as big of a deal.
- 8:22And you know, you had some weird things in there.
- 8:24The two point conversion that cut it to 3115.
- 8:27Major Cantrell's in the game. Yeah, he's, he's making the.
- 8:30Something's going on. Right.
- 8:32Yeah, that yeah. Mansky.
- 8:33Yeah, you just had some weird parts of that game, too.
- 8:37Where does this team go? What?
- 8:39What? What is Is this still a
- 8:41contender for getting to the championship?
- 8:43Yeah, it's still there for them. I mean, I think Texas Tech is by
- 8:46themselves, right? They're they're clearly the
- 8:49class of the Big 12. Yes, I walked away impressed
- 8:52what they did to Houston. I told you I needed to see more
- 8:55and I saw enough Saturday evening.
- 8:57OK, yes, this is what you've been believing.
- 9:01Texas Tech is far and away. There's a gap between them and.
- 9:03Everybody and and I think Utah's obviously still very much alive
- 9:06in this conversation. I think TCU is very much alive.
- 9:10They didn't look great. Hoover did not have a good first
- 9:12half. Iowa State's in it.
- 9:16BYU. BYUI think is in it now.
- 9:19Iowa State will get them head to head.
- 9:21Obviously Baylor. Need to see more.
- 9:27OK. Not not quite there.
- 9:30I mean they survive against K state and that was one that
- 9:33easily could. Have gone Arizona State,
- 9:34obviously, but Arizona State. Take a look at Arizona State's
- 9:37next four games, all right, the final of which is in Ames.
- 9:41What kind of team is going to show up in Ames?
- 9:42Look at their next 4. They go to Utah.
- 9:44OK, have fun. And then they're home for tech.
- 9:48They get Houston after that. Yep.
- 9:49Not a cupcake, no. Before they travel.
- 9:52To Iowa State, there's no body. Oh, that.
- 9:55This is a pretty daunting little stretch that the Sun Devils are
- 9:57about to embark on. And I don't see that.
- 10:00I don't see them being better than two and.
- 10:01Two, no, I don't either. I'm I'm totally with you.
- 10:04A lot of folks want to put Cincinnati into the
- 10:06conversation. I can't.
- 10:10I like Soresby. Kansas looks as though there may
- 10:13be better than we thought. Now, Speaking of schedules, this
- 10:16is what Cincinnati has coming up 'cause they're two and oh in the
- 10:18conference right now, Home for Central Florida should be a win.
- 10:22They go to Oklahoma State, that's a win, and then they're
- 10:25home for Baylor, OH. Boy.
- 10:27They get to 5 and O now the closing stretch little bit more
- 10:31daunting. Hope so here's November, go to
- 10:34Utah. They get a buy before Arizona
- 10:36comes to town. But Arizona come to Cincinnati
- 10:40in middle November. I'll take the Bearcats.
- 10:43They got BYU coming in. That could be a monster.
- 10:45So BYU goes to Cincy. Goes to Cinfat and then at TCU
- 10:50to wrap it up. Well, it's rivalry.
- 10:52Weekend Trenton You know that Cincinnati TCU battle over the
- 10:55era over the years. But I think we have to consider
- 10:58them part of the conversation. I would put them over Baylor
- 11:02right now. I'd put them over Arizona State.
- 11:05But you know, I'm not sold on that team.
- 11:07They'd be a little bit lower down on the list.
- 11:09But yeah, Cincinnati's up there. Kansas is 2 in one.
- 11:13What do they have? They go to Texas.
- 11:15Texas Tech this week. Their schedule.
- 11:18Who their they lost to since he beat them two weeks?
- 11:21Ago, yes. 3734, not an overly daunting schedule.
- 11:26They do, of course, go to Iowa State.
- 11:28Second last game of the season. I can't quite get there.
- 11:31No. What gets you there?
- 11:32You have to be 7 and two to play in the conference.
- 11:34Are we going to see a? Yeah, I think so, because I
- 11:37think Tex. Yeah, if.
- 11:39I mean, it'd be fun if there's a whole bunch of six and three.
- 11:42And then we get to get out the tiebreakers again.
- 11:43They can. Yep.
- 11:44But but now since he's got a tiebreaker over Iowa State and
- 11:47if they're in the conversation, so get the seven and two.
- 11:50So you got maybe 1. You can maybe trip up once more
- 11:53if you're trying to find that 2nd that that two seed in the
- 11:57Big 12 championship. Seven and two gets you there.
- 12:00I think 6:00 and 3:00. Then we're talking tiebreakers
- 12:04and who knows how many teams. It could be 5 teams that are
- 12:06also. Going to take off our shoes and
- 12:08you know it's going to. Be did you play this team?
- 12:10No, you didn't. No it.
- 12:11It the whole common opponents and.
- 12:14I'm looking to make the title game Odds.
- 12:18Oh this is disappointing. Right now at DraftKings they
- 12:21only have the ACC up. Do they?
- 12:23Hopefully by tomorrow they'll have enough to make the Big 12
- 12:25Championship game because I want to see that now to win the
- 12:28conference. Of course they do have that.
- 12:29Yeah, but that's probably. Tech plus 110.
- 12:32Arizona State's still the second choice, plus 450.
- 12:35Your third betting choice is the Cincinnati Bearcats plus 950.
- 12:41Utah 12:50. BYU 12:50.
- 12:43TCU 13 to one now. Iowa State's down to 14 to 1.
- 12:47Kansas and Baylor, both 28 to one in Arizona, 40 to 1.
- 12:51John Williams just tweeted at us and I think this is, I think
- 12:53this is pretty good take. Welcome back to Bramer for a
- 12:56second. And, and, and this is clearly
- 12:58possible and I agree with you, John.
- 13:01He believes he was trying to get out of bounds before the clock
- 13:03ran out. I could buy that.
- 13:05OK, Yep, I could buy that, yes, because.
- 13:08It was just so weird. Right, Yes, weird is the perfect
- 13:12term for that. 1 John I I agree with you, yeah.
- 13:15We you know, we mentioned couple weeks ago the Rutgers game we've
- 13:20been running out of bounds and I was just apoplectic how people
- 13:23he's trying to score. He's he's not looking up at the
- 13:26clock And well, with once I got this one little no, no, you can
- 13:30make the same argument there. I I need to look at that play
- 13:32one more? Time, Yeah, fair stuff.
- 13:34All right, let's do let's do a couple of minutes.
- 13:35I will save the college. Is there anything else thing in
- 13:37college that's, I mean, obviously a huge win for
- 13:39Florida, huge win for Florida. And and you know what cracked me
- 13:43up? And I don't think I'd seen this
- 13:46before the level there's there's game footage of arch in at his
- 13:51high school in Louisiana. Have you seen that on Twitter?
- 13:54Well, I've I remember the talk about, is it about just how much
- 13:57beggar he was? Well, that and, and, and there's
- 13:59a, there's actual game footage and I feel so bad for this kid,
- 14:04whoever #7 he is that's chasing him.
- 14:08Yeah, it's just brutal. Anyways, the the Arch Manning
- 14:12thing, I mean where does he go from here If.
- 14:16It was anybody else you'd put him on the.
- 14:18Bench, you would right? The expectations were through
- 14:20the roof and we kill Franklin for not being able to win a big
- 14:23game. Hello.
- 14:25Sark. Yes, absolutely.
- 14:26When was the last time he did that Was That was really good.
- 14:29I thought Alabama's win was good.
- 14:30Ty Simpson, I love his game. Yeah.
- 14:32Absolutely. He's only had five starts.
- 14:34I mean, this is, this is his first opportunity, right?
- 14:38So I, I he's good, he's fun. What else from over the weekend?
- 14:41Well, obviously the UCLA, Penn State.
- 14:43Yeah, I mean, that one was just, it was so wild because James
- 14:47Franklin doesn't lose games like that.
- 14:49He doesn't lose those games. Yes, against big time opponents.
- 14:53Yeah, but I won your favorite by 20. 4 Right.
- 14:55That's not, that's not the storyline.
- 14:57That's not what we're used to with him.
- 14:59And to lose in that fashion, to have the hangover, to come back
- 15:04and just never be able to get off the hump and and all that
- 15:07money that they spent to bring Jim Doles aboard and you give a
- 15:1042 to that. Team to a guy who just was told
- 15:14he's going to start calling plays on Tuesday.
- 15:17He didn't know how to work the headset.
- 15:18Little Skippy. I I, I could not stop smiling.
- 15:22He was exciting because he looks like Dad.
- 15:25He you hear him, you hear him talk, and it's just like he
- 15:30looks. Like he's carrying a surfboard
- 15:31under his arm, headed for the water.
- 15:33I was shocked. I remember him at UCLA.
- 15:36See, I don't. And I remember when he committed
- 15:38all, it was a big. Deal.
- 15:39But did he play? No, no, not much, but it was at
- 15:43the time. And I'm like, well, how long ago
- 15:46was that, 'cause he's 32, yes, he looks like he's 18.
- 15:51Yes, he's at a day over, he's at drinking age.
- 15:53No, the dude's 13. He's never walked into an
- 15:55establishment that has a license that he hasn't been carted,
- 15:58right? Absolutely.
- 16:00And on top of it then to. Have the players carry him.
- 16:03It's unbelievable. That's what makes this so
- 16:06special, this sports so special. This was one of those moments.
- 16:10This team's O and four, we're talking about an O and 12 a
- 16:13terrible. Lost a rudderless ship type of
- 16:15team. And they beat not anybody, no,
- 16:18but a majority of people's pre season #1 team.
- 16:21And to do it in that, that, that that's what makes college
- 16:24football better in the NFL. Yes, it is.
- 16:27Totally great stories. What is it?
- 16:29Was it 57 points they'd scored all year?
- 16:31Is that what it was that scored a bunch they got?
- 16:34Bludgeoned by New Mexico, absolutely manhandled in that
- 16:38game. You know, now where does Penn
- 16:39State go? Because they got to be perfect.
- 16:42I don't know if they can be. That means beating Ohio State.
- 16:45Who do they have this week? Oh, they get does do they have
- 16:48Northwestern is? That they do.
- 16:49God yes. And isn't aren't one of the
- 16:51networks there? Is that the big noon kick off?
- 16:53It very well could be. Oh God is.
- 16:56That what they really paid for. They have to go to Kinnick under
- 16:59the lights as it's just been. Oh it has.
- 17:01It's under 6 O clock on what is the cocks.
- 17:07Got it. Well, I get Peacock, but I mean.
- 17:11You got the cock. Oh yeah.
- 17:13But still, as we talked. About earlier, I'm kidding.
- 17:16Just flipping back and forth. It's so.
- 17:18Frustrating ass. It's a pain in the ass, but I'm
- 17:21not going to flip. I'm going to just leave.
- 17:22So Peacock's got it, but it is under the lights, not on NBC.
- 17:26What's NBC got? Has it been announced?
- 17:28What? What did they take?
- 17:29They have their night game with Notre Dame all.
- 17:33Right, that makes sense. Yes.
- 17:34So begrudgingly, all right, it's under the lights.
- 17:38Great. However, yeah, not the best.
- 17:41No, no, it's under the lights, but you know that old force in
- 17:44the trees thing. All right, well, take your time
- 17:47out. Bill Seals is coming up next.
- 17:49Bill Seals, Iowa State, that's who he covers.
- 17:52We won't know much because obviously I'm the Hanson injury
- 17:56is clearly lingering out there and Campbell will meet the media

- 18:19Miller and Condon underway on a Monday.
- 18:21Glad you're with us. It's the Iowa Sports Radio
- 18:23Network. I'm Hillary Congdon, welcome
- 18:26back. Still to come this hour and Nick
- 18:27athenchiefsplitz.com on Monday Night Football, a game you can
- 18:31hear right here. By the way, Chiefs Jags that
- 18:34gets underway at six, the pregame at six, kickoff 720.
- 18:37Westwood One provides that on KXNO.
- 18:41Let's get the Bill Seals. He covers Iowa State
- 18:43cyclonereport.com and he joins us on advance of the Rodeo to
- 18:48Colorado to see you to take on the Buffs 230 kick off on
- 18:52Saturday afternoon. Bill Trenton, Ken, thank you for
- 18:55coming on. How are you, Bill Seals?
- 18:58I'm doing well guys, appreciate you having me on here on this
- 19:02lovely cloudy Monday after. All tight Monday, no doubt about
- 19:06it. Well, look, they're they're five
- 19:08and one. Sky's not falling.
- 19:10I think all Cyclone fans would have signed for five and one.
- 19:13I guess maybe the the anxiety, maybe the pit in their stomach,
- 19:17at least at this point, has to do with Carson Hansen and the
- 19:20severity of his concussion, whether or not he'll be ready.
- 19:23Sama finally got his opportunity to be the guy and I thought he
- 19:27played very well in when when Hanson went out.
- 19:30But what do you expect You're going to hear from Matt Campbell
- 19:34tomorrow and then obviously when the availability starts
- 19:37trickling out on Wednesday. Any Hanson news that you're
- 19:40aware of, Bill? Nothing at this point.
- 19:43I think that I wouldn't be surprised if he's a getting
- 19:47given that questionable tag come Wednesday night's availability
- 19:51report. I think it'll be a day-to-day
- 19:54thing with him this week as they get ready for the trip out to
- 19:57Boulder. I I think they really need him.
- 20:01Abu Sama, you're right. I thought he played very well,
- 20:04approached 100 yards in that game.
- 20:06But I think with Sama and Hanson right now, what you get is a
- 20:11lot, lot more experience and productivity.
- 20:14I think you know, Dylan Lee got a little bit of time.
- 20:17On Saturday. But I just don't think it was
- 20:19the same dynamic as we've we've seen with Hanson and Sama.
- 20:23So getting him back in there will, I think, be very important
- 20:28moving forward. One of the main aspects of the
- 20:31game that Ken and I talked about at the top was just the poor
- 20:34tackling, certainly in the first half of the game from the side
- 20:37with state defense. Now you're playing with a lot of
- 20:38new parts, and maybe that was a piece of it too.
- 20:40But what I just can't remember. I hate cock defense.
- 20:43Struggled wrapping up, making the simple plays that they're
- 20:47always so fundamentally sound. Any idea what went wrong and why
- 20:50the pack tackling was just so bad on Saturday?
- 20:53Well, to be honest, it hasn't been great all season.
- 20:57It the bye week or going into the bye week.
- 21:00They had the game against Arkansas State where it seemed
- 21:03to hit rock bottom. They bounced back.
- 21:05I thought played very well against Arizona and then kind of
- 21:09took another step back it seemed like against Cincinnati.
- 21:14So, you know, I just put out these the PFF update morning
- 21:18kind of a season long look so far at both Iowa State and and
- 21:23Colorado. And you know, the tackling
- 21:25numbers are not not good for this defense.
- 21:27They're 126th right now in the FBS with a 52.3.
- 21:33So, you know, run defense is not much better.
- 21:37So it's going to be interesting to, Yeah.
- 21:40Out of how many? Six Well, I PFF got 136 on the
- 21:47FBF ranking. So, yeah, I mean, it's it's not
- 21:51been good. It took a step back, you know,
- 21:54they've gotta get, as Campbell says, precision and detail.
- 21:57They need to be on that. But you know, you another thing
- 22:01too, I think injuries, we're really starting to see that a
- 22:04little bit because John Tez Williams, gosh, he he's was one
- 22:09of the best tacklers on the team.
- 22:11I think, regardless of position. He was a guy, you know, and in a
- 22:15335, they got to have corners and DBS who tackle well.
- 22:19And before these injuries hit, I thought that they really had
- 22:22that and that supports this type of system well.
- 22:25And Cooper, you know, Jeremiah Cooper, he held his own as well.
- 22:29He was a a decent tackler. So I think you're starting to
- 22:32see some of the injuries take their toll a little bit.
- 22:35You know, Quinton Taylor I thought played very well as a
- 22:38corner and I thought he tackled well.
- 22:41But yeah, it really in a in a 335 like they run, they've got
- 22:45to have that back eight. They've got to tackle well.
- 22:49They've got to come up and support in the run.
- 22:51And you know when teams are hitting that 5 or 6 yard pass
- 22:55that they're going to give these offenses, they got to have guys
- 22:59that come up and the first guy in has to make the tackle.
- 23:03Billsealscyclingreport.com Rocco back to his accuracy was not his
- 23:08sharpest game, still made a lot of great plays.
- 23:11Eskelsen was terrific. So well, obviously he's emerged.
- 23:15You can count on him now. But but Rocco, how did he grayed
- 23:19out? Because statistically, if you
- 23:21just watch the game, that's pretty good game, but he missed
- 23:24a lot of throws, a lot of throws behind the receivers.
- 23:26Receivers helped him out a little bit.
- 23:28How did Rocco grayed out Bill? Well, you know, it it he
- 23:32actually was, if my my recollection is correct here,
- 23:35I'm pulling him up right now, but I believe he was the highest
- 23:38graded player on offense Saturday.
- 23:41So yeah, he was, he was a 78.7. He was the only player over a 70
- 23:46in that game offensively. So I think he that PFF didn't
- 23:52seem to assign much blame to him and and how they, you know,
- 23:56graded out and offensively in that game.
- 23:59So, yeah, I mean it there, there were a few throws that he
- 24:02missed, sure, but gosh, 48 passes in a game.
- 24:07I don't I don't think he's done that too often.
- 24:10And they, you know, they haven't had to kind of sling it around
- 24:13like they did with him. But you know, you get down what,
- 24:1531 to 7 I think with a minute 6 to go in the first half, then a
- 24:20lot of it's going to come on his shoulders give.
- 24:23Him 10 points just for his toughness.
- 24:25Really. He took it, no doubt, and
- 24:27bounced back in a big guy way that.
- 24:29Shot. That shot was violent that he
- 24:32took, yes. Were you surprised that Mansky
- 24:34was the guy that got the call? When Brett had to leave the
- 24:37game, we saw Moberly's now back. He was injured during August
- 24:41camp. Were you surprised that it was
- 24:42Mansky that got the call? Yeah, a little bit.
- 24:46I think that they maybe like what they have with Mansky in
- 24:49that, you know, whatever that RPO, that RPO package that
- 24:54they've they've got that they run with the backup quarterback.
- 24:57You know, there's not much O in the RPO right now, but it seems
- 25:02to be a run every time. You know, be nice to see them
- 25:06take a shot. Gosh, Manske's got just the
- 25:08tremendous arm strength and I think that, you know, they get
- 25:12some opponents fooled and and cheat some of those guys up.
- 25:15I think Iowa State could hit some big plays deep out of that.
- 25:19So yeah, but I and and Manske too, he's played what was he
- 25:24played now? I think 3, three games so far
- 25:27this year. Seems to.
- 25:28Agree. Yeah, yeah.
- 25:30So actually two games, I'm mistaken there.
- 25:33It's only been two games. So they've still got a couple of
- 25:36games worth of flexibility with him as far as the red shirt
- 25:39thing goes. So you might see continue to see
- 25:42him from time to time. I still think, you know, maybe
- 25:45if it's a game to game thing with Rocco's, God forbid he is
- 25:49out and misses some time. I still think it's probably
- 25:52Moberly if it if it's, you know, a game to game thing that if
- 25:56it's a long term thing, I I think they really open up the
- 26:00competition. But you know Rocco's toughness.
- 26:03He's he's been a gamer so far. No question.
- 26:06Speaking of long term things, hopefully it's not a long term
- 26:09thing when it comes to it's pretty apparent that Campbell
- 26:13doesn't trust Chase Smith as it changed the offense in a couple
- 26:17of times they went when normally Conradi would have come out
- 26:20there. This isn't a knock on the kid.
- 26:22He was the third string. He didn't think he'd see was
- 26:24going to see the field very much at all.
- 26:26The kickoffs, I got to think that they're, you know, landing
- 26:29somewhere around the 15 yard line, which is great if he's in
- 26:31the NFL in that landing zone, but that's an advantage for the
- 26:36opponent. What's Conradi's status bill?
- 26:39Is there a chance that he's back after this buy?
- 26:43I think that they sit him out again this week.
- 26:45Kenny, I I believe that with the buy week coming after Colorado,
- 26:49they're going to afford him a couple more weeks, but I would
- 26:52not be surprised at all they get that two game home stand.
- 26:56BYU started with BYU later this month.
- 26:59I I think you might see him back for that one, but still going to
- 27:02be another week, probably a Chase Smith and it's got to be a
- 27:06lot better in kick coverage too. They they were remarkable in
- 27:10that all season. But you know, with Conradi and
- 27:13well, Gilbert started the season a little bit doing kickoffs.
- 27:16They wasn't. The kickoff coverage units
- 27:18weren't really tested too much during that stretch, but we
- 27:22finally saw against Cincinnati that kind of breakdown a little
- 27:25bit and the Bearcats had a couple of returns and gave them
- 27:29great field position on offense. You mentioned you did your deep
- 27:33dive on PFF on Colorado. What jumped off the page with
- 27:36the Buffs when you were going through that exercise?
- 27:39Just kind of skimming through it myself a little bit here over at
- 27:42cyclonereport.com. Looks like there might be some
- 27:44points in this one again. Yeah, yeah, I think so too,
- 27:47Trent. It's a team that's got a pretty
- 27:51good offensive, but you know, amazingly that the skill
- 27:55players, actually they it was the skill players galore it
- 27:59seemed like with Colorado the last couple years.
- 28:02But this has been one that for the top five play, well, granted
- 28:07they played at least 201 snaps to qualify for what I did here.
- 28:11But for the top five graded offensive players or offensive
- 28:15lineman, you know, they've got one wide receiver.
- 28:18So yeah, I mean, they're getting the protection.
- 28:20I think that's been good in the past pass game they've done OK
- 28:24run blocking wise, but just the quarterback play there has been
- 28:29dismal. But you know the online doing
- 28:32its job. But yeah, defensively again,
- 28:34it's not a not a very good group across the board on the back
- 28:38end, they're really not good. Travis Hunter, those days are
- 28:41over with their 132nd out of what we said, 136 teams grading
- 28:48wise and coverage so far. So on the back end, really not a
- 28:52very good defense. You know, they're not really
- 28:54much of A pass rushing type team either.
- 28:57So yeah, it could be another one in the 30s out in in Boulder on
- 29:01Saturday. What's the what are the numbers
- 29:03saying about Kaden Salter? I watched the TCU game.
- 29:06I was not impressed. Means a dual threat quarterback,
- 29:09but he doesn't mean Iowa State's clearly seen better quarterbacks
- 29:12already and will after the Colorado game.
- 29:14What are the numbers say when it comes to their quarterback Kaden
- 29:17Salter? Waited around between, you know,
- 29:23Salter and a couple of those other guys.
- 29:25But yeah, I think with the quarterback position actually,
- 29:30well, Julian Lewis has only played the one game.
- 29:32He was the highest rank to those and and he's not been back out
- 29:37there. But it's it's not good.
- 29:39Ryan, stop. The other one that's played,
- 29:41he's actually the lowest rank of any player offensively for
- 29:46Colorado. And then finally I get to Kaden
- 29:49Salter. You asked about him, the 64.1 so
- 29:53far the the running grade with him is pretty good, but passing
- 29:58a 53.6, I think, you know, Iowa State out of that 335, how
- 30:03they're going to line up against him.
- 30:04They're going to try and take their wave, take away the run
- 30:07game and and make him beat him. You know, maybe a similarly to
- 30:11how they defended Fafetta from Arizona a couple weeks ago could
- 30:16be a similar game plan on Saturday.
- 30:18What do you got coming up this week at cyclonereport.com, Bill?
- 30:21Well, yeah, I'm just getting that actually.
- 30:23Here we are in the middle of football season and we had a
- 30:26ranking basketball rankings update that just went live about
- 30:311/2 hour ago. So I've got Iowa State very well
- 30:34represented as far as recruits in the 2027 class.
- 30:39So kind of taking a deep dive into that and then some
- 30:42recruiting coverage we all have on some guys that have visited
- 30:46recently and then we'll be back at it tomorrow morning for
- 30:50another weekly football availability for the Cyclones as
- 30:54we look ahead to. Colorado and Mauser this week.
- 30:57Is that his turn? That is correct, yeah.
- 31:00We'll have Mauser this week and then I'm not sure who we've got
- 31:03for players yet. Haven't gotten that e-mail yet.
- 31:05Good stuff. Bill Seals, cyclonereport.com,
- 31:08part of on three Media. Bill, thank you.
- 31:09As always, we'll talk to you next Monday.
- 31:11Appreciate it. Sounds good, guys.
- 31:13Have a good one, yeah. You're the same Bill Seals.
- 31:15So we check in on Iowa State. Oh boy.
- 31:19Over on the other side of the state, the Iowa Hawkeyes have
- 31:22released their depth chart for the match up against Wisconsin.
- 31:25Who's the quarterback? Listed at the top.
- 31:28Mark Gridowski is listed. Seriously.
- 31:30Now? I wouldn't read too much into
- 31:32that. We know depth charts in Iowa
- 31:34throughout the years a lot of times.
- 31:37But you know, here's the part. A lot of times they say, well,
- 31:40it's just how the game finished. But he didn't finish.
- 31:43He didn't finish, no. We'll find out more from Kirk
- 31:46tomorrow. And now it's 145.
- 31:49Man, it's too bad. I'm jealous of the afternoon
- 31:51show. They'll be able to break down
- 31:54that news. Anyways, we'll take a time out.
- 31:56We will talk Monday Night Football with Nick Athens,
- 31:58Chiefs, Jags. Of course.
- 32:00You can hear the game right here on Des Moines Sports Station One
- 32:03O 6.3 KXNO No I Condon welcome back Iowa Sports Radio Network
- 32:09wherever you're listening in the state of Iowa, Grateful that you
- 32:12are the flagship Des Moines sports station 106.3 KX&O will
- 32:16carry Monday Night Football courtesy of Westwood, 1-2 and
- 32:20two Kansas City three and one Jacksonville KC on the road
- 32:24about a 3 1/2 point favorite. Nick Athan chiefsplitz.com joins
- 32:28us chiefsplitz.com. Nick Vegas is saying this is
- 32:32going to be a tricky game. Where do you line up on the I
- 32:35guess the severity scale, the toughness scale when it comes to
- 32:40Kansas City and how tough this game is going to be?
- 32:43Do you think that Jacksonville is a legitimate threat to the
- 32:46Chiefs tonight? And I think they played well
- 32:50this year. They had a big win last weekend.
- 32:52They kind of flexed their muscles and their personalities.
- 32:55And I thought that was a terrific win.
- 32:57And you know, the Chiefs kind of kind of figured a few things
- 33:00out. They seem to be back to their
- 33:03normal spell. But Jacksonville, you listen, if
- 33:06they don't turn the ball over and they get a couple of
- 33:08turnovers from the Chief, yeah, they could easily win this game.
- 33:11I mean, I'm not putting anything past it.
- 33:13Now. Trevor Lawrence does not play
- 33:15well against Kansas City. And I think Pastor Holmes is
- 33:17beating him every time, including in the post season
- 33:19when they faced each other. So that is also something that
- 33:22you have to look at because as we saw last week with Lamar
- 33:25Jackson, you know, he can't really be Pastor Holmes either.
- 33:27So it does play a psychological edge, I think for the Chiefs.
- 33:32But hey, I'm not, I'm not putting this, this game in the
- 33:35win column, you know, until it, until it's played.
- 33:37Let's put it that way. So we saw that offense really
- 33:40open up a week ago and getting the speed of Xavier Worthy back
- 33:43certainly help that. Then he shows up late in the
- 33:45week on the injury report. He's dealing with both an ankle
- 33:48and a shoulder injury. I saw Ian Rappaport had an
- 33:51update this morning that said he's expected to say play.
- 33:54But, you know, as somebody that might have him in his fantasy
- 33:57lineup now you're starting to scour the waiver wire and see
- 33:59what's out there available. What have you heard about
- 34:01Worthy? And obviously he is so important
- 34:04to this offense. Well, yeah, he, he supposedly it
- 34:07happened on the plane. So I don't know, maybe he
- 34:08slipped in the bathroom or something.
- 34:09I don't know. But you know, who knows?
- 34:12But I, I, I think he's going to play.
- 34:14Now. Will he get as many snaps as
- 34:15last week? I mean, by his own admission, he
- 34:18said I'm out of shape. You know, I was winded.
- 34:21I was sucking gas, I was cramping.
- 34:24So it, you know, it's going to take him a few weeks to kind of
- 34:27get up to speed. So I think the Chiefs just had
- 34:29to do it. It was a little swollen.
- 34:30My understanding is he's going to play tonight.
- 34:33And if they get to a big lead, you know, if they're fortunate
- 34:36to get to a big lead, then obviously, you know, they don't,
- 34:38they don't need him in the second-half or late in the game.
- 34:41So I think they'll be cautious with him if he can do, if he's
- 34:4590% speed, that's still faster than most wide receivers.
- 34:49So use them in particular situations and and hope for the
- 34:53best. It doesn't get worse because,
- 34:54you know, we're two games away from Rashid Rice returning and
- 34:57I'd certainly like to see all the Chiefs weapons on the field
- 34:59at the same time. Yeah, not me.
- 35:03Did they, they, they bottled up Derrick Henry last week, Nick,
- 35:07as you know now Travis Etienne, I don't know if he's all of a
- 35:10sudden his lights, his NFL lights gone on.
- 35:12Obviously he was a great player in college, but he looked really
- 35:15good last week. How did they shut down or what
- 35:18will they do similarly tonight to try and take Etienne away
- 35:22from that rushing attack? You know, I, I, I really get
- 35:25tired. She's dominated.
- 35:27Derrick Henry. I mean, I think he's had one big
- 35:29game against him and that's when he was in Tennessee in the
- 35:32regular season, but pretty much they bottle him up ever since.
- 35:35So I think with Etni mean, he's one of the best young running
- 35:38backs I think in the NFL still. He gave the chiefs fit in that
- 35:42playoff game in Kansas City and he's the kind of runner that the
- 35:45chiefs are going to have to account for.
- 35:47Now. I think what's going to be to
- 35:48their advantage is, you know, because Trevor Lawrence is a
- 35:51mobile quarterback, the way that they use Chanel and Nick Bolden,
- 35:55his spies could probably also going to double as, you know,
- 35:58making sure that they they cover the running back should you get
- 36:00through the line of scrimmage. So, you know, if he has
- 36:03A100120550, that bodes well. And of course, the weather could
- 36:06be a factor tonight. It's supposed to rain.
- 36:09There have been thunderstorms. It's hurricane season.
- 36:13So, you know, if this is a running game game, the Jags I
- 36:17think have the advantage. We go into game #5 Mahomes is
- 36:20still the leading rusher. Cream hood looks old, Pacheco
- 36:24maybe looks washed. And then you have an intriguing
- 36:27guy in Burchard Smith, 7th router SMU.
- 36:29He was a wide receiver at the beginning of his career, now
- 36:32transition to running back his last season at SMU.
- 36:35Do they have something there? I mean, is it is it worth now we
- 36:38got to see because maybe Hunt and Pacheco just aren't going to
- 36:41have it for him this year. What can you tell us about
- 36:43Smith? Well, you know, I think he's,
- 36:46he's the future. I think by, you know, by the
- 36:48time that they open and after the bye week against the
- 36:51Broncos, I think he's going to be the starter.
- 36:54Pacheco just doesn't have enough court awareness to bounce
- 36:57outside. He's left at least two, maybe 3
- 36:59touchdowns on the game on the field, but just not simply
- 37:01bouncing outside and following, you know, Josh Simmons.
- 37:04So you've got that, you know, cream on is your short yardage
- 37:08dude, you know what? And he's basically a fullback
- 37:11with a running back body and he does his job.
- 37:14Pacheco isn't there. You know, I think Richard Smith
- 37:18is. You can see last week, you know,
- 37:20he's, he's good in special teams.
- 37:22He can catch the ball, he can run the ball.
- 37:25I thought that catch he had in the flat against the Ravens was
- 37:27a three yard and he had four guys around him and he he kept
- 37:30past all four of them. So, you know, he's the future.
- 37:34Now. That doesn't mean the Chiefs
- 37:35aren't going to call The Jets and bring the Wichita native
- 37:38back home. Oh.
- 37:40Really. OK, I think Reese Hall is
- 37:43definitely based on his comments yesterday, he's definitely on
- 37:45the move. He it's my understanding that if
- 37:48there's an injury this week or next week that the Chiefs
- 37:51probably will go after Bruce Hall.
- 37:52That makes a lot of sense. And you put Bruce Hall and Bruce
- 37:55Schmidt together with with cream Hunt is your is your thumper
- 38:00that help this offense a great deal.
- 38:04So I wouldn't, I wouldn't rule out a trade for running back at
- 38:08this point. That's interesting because the
- 38:13the backup running back in in in New York is hurt.
- 38:16Isn't he the kid from Wisconsin? Yeah, but if he wants out, you
- 38:21know. Braylon Allen, right.
- 38:23Braylon Allen? Yeah, he's out.
- 38:26Interesting. Well, that would make some
- 38:27sense. I mean, Bruce Hall was on the
- 38:30was on the seemingly on the block during the during fall
- 38:34camp and and leading up to it. All right, Nick, we got a couple
- 38:36only a couple of minutes left. Help us out.
- 38:38Help me out with the AFC. The Bills get beat last night.
- 38:43The Colts look like they're a legit threat.
- 38:46Somehow the Ravens are still the favorite to win the North.
- 38:49I don't know how, but they are. That's not possible.
- 38:52Who's the best team in the AFC? Is it Kansas City?
- 38:56I, I, I think should they win tonight, I, I, I think you have
- 38:59to put them back in the conversation.
- 39:01You know, the Chiefs have less coals, I think, than the Bills.
- 39:04The Bills have they, they can't rush with four guys.
- 39:07They blitz, they blitzed constantly last night and they
- 39:12still weren't effective against May.
- 39:14And I think the Ravens are done. I think they need to look toward
- 39:18next season, the Colts, you know, come to Kansas City and
- 39:21beat the Chiefs at Arrowhead. And then I'll probably feel a
- 39:23little bit better about it. But their defense is just
- 39:26rocking and rolling in the Lou Amarino.
- 39:28It's done a terrific job coming over from the Bengals.
- 39:30And why the Bengals let him go, I don't know.
- 39:32No, you know, but I think if the Chiefs win tonight, then you
- 39:35know, you put them there Bills, you know, Colt probably is the
- 39:41best thing now. Now Pittsburgh looks good too.
- 39:43So, you know, I, I, I, I think, listen, no one's going to run
- 39:47away with anything this year. These teams are all have flaws.
- 39:51You know, you look at the Broncos yesterday, your team,
- 39:53OK, they, they stink offensively for 3/4 and then they just bury
- 39:58and. Bonex goes into the phone booth
- 40:00and emerges with the Cape. Yeah, I guess a couple of really
- 40:02nice calls going their way and that didn't hurt.
- 40:05Yeah, yeah. That's one of the worst
- 40:07officiating careers in the NFL. Hey, brother, Listen, we're out
- 40:09of time. I want to plug Chief Splits.
