- 0:00Hey y'all, welcome back. Happy Friday.
- 0:03We made it to the end of another week and today we are going to
- 0:09be in Matthew chapter 22 verses one through 14.
- 0:14And I want to say this right from the start that this is
- 0:17hands down one of my favorite passages in scripture.
- 0:21I feel like I have a lot of favorite ones, but as I'm
- 0:23reading this it just fires me up.
- 0:26And I think part of why I love this parable so much is it's a
- 0:31lot easier for a lot of us to understand.
- 0:35It's the parable about the wedding.
- 0:36Banquet and weddings are common in society today.
- 0:40Invitations are familiar and most people can clearly envision
- 0:45what Jesus is describing here. And frankly, during my quiet
- 0:49time, I wrote so much on this passage that I genuinely feel
- 0:54like I could write an entire book on this one story.
- 0:57But for today, I'm going to try to highlight the key things that
- 1:01the Lord impressed on my heart and this parable.
- 1:05It is not just a story that Jesus told back then.
- 1:08It is truly such a rich invitation that we're still
- 1:13responding to right now. So with that being said, we're
- 1:17going to get right into it. Starting in verse one, Jesus
- 1:22spoke to them again in parables saying the Kingdom of heaven is
- 1:26like a king who prepared a wedding banquet for his son.
- 1:30He sent his servants to those who had been invited to the
- 1:33banquet to tell them to come, but they refused to come.
- 1:37Then he sent some more servants and said, Tell those who have
- 1:41been invited that I've prepared my dinner, my oxen and fattened
- 1:45cattle have been butchered, and everything is ready, come to the
- 1:49wedding banquet. But they paid no attention and
- 1:53went off 1 to his field, another to his business.
- 1:57The rest seized his servants, mistreated them and killed them.
- 2:01The king was enraged. He sent his army and destroyed
- 2:05those murders and burned their city.
- 2:08Then he said to his servants, the wedding banquet is ready,
- 2:12but those I invited did not deserve to come.
- 2:15So go to the street corners and invite to the banquet anyone you
- 2:19find. So the servants went out into
- 2:21the streets and gathered all the people they could find, the bad
- 2:25as well as the good. And the wedding hall was filled
- 2:28with guests. But when the king came in to see
- 2:31the guests, he he noticed a man there who was not wearing
- 2:35wedding clothes. He asked, How did you get in
- 2:38here without wedding clothes, friend?
- 2:41The man was speechless. Then the king told the
- 2:44attendants, Tie him hand and foot and throw him outside into
- 2:48the darkness where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth,
- 2:52for many are invited, but few are chosen.
- 2:58OK, there is so much happening here. 1st I'm going to give you
- 3:03all some biblical context. We see the King and that is
- 3:06representing God the Father. The Son is Jesus and the
- 3:11servants are the prophets and even for us today, followers of
- 3:15Jesus. So this wedding feast, it's
- 3:18pointing to the marriage supper of the Lamb.
- 3:22This is when Christ returns for his bride, the church.
- 3:25And we can read all about this in Revelation now.
- 3:28Something that stood out to me as I was reading commentary, it
- 3:33was explaining that in this culture, wedding banquet
- 3:37banquets typically came with two announcements.
- 3:41There was one invitation and then another was letting the
- 3:44guests know that the feast was fully ready and prepared.
- 3:48These invites, they were deeply personal and not like the ones
- 3:52that we get today for weddings typically.
- 3:56So in this parable, there are actually 3 invitations and each
- 4:01one is turned down. Honestly, that part kind of made
- 4:04me sad when I was reading it because I just imagined the king
- 4:08being so excited and generous and eager to celebrate his son,
- 4:13yet being rejected every single time.
- 4:16So why were the invitations rejected y'all?
- 4:20It's because people had other priorities.
- 4:23It says in the passion translation that they were not
- 4:27impressed. And that phrase just stopped me
- 4:30in my tracks because their excuses actually sounded very
- 4:34familiar. Work, business, money, It said
- 4:39fields. And in the passion it puts it as
- 4:42a farming enterprise. And when you define enterprise,
- 4:45this is a pursuit or a plan, an endeavour.
- 4:49So today, that pursuit or plan might look like a packed
- 4:53schedule. Social activities, exercise
- 4:56routines, your phone and social media, TV shows, shopping,
- 5:02partying, dating. Just for fun without intention,
- 5:06y'all? I'm giving y'all an exhaustive
- 5:08list. And I just want to be clear that
- 5:13not all of those things are bad. God wants us to enjoy the life
- 5:17that He's given us. But there is a time for rest,
- 5:20for travel, laughter and fun. But the question is, have these
- 5:26things become replacements for time alone with Jesus?
- 5:30Or even worse, have they become excuses for rejecting His
- 5:35invitation? Because His invitation is not
- 5:38just about salvation into heaven one day, it's an invitation into
- 5:43His presence right now. And I say this honestly because
- 5:48some of these things that I listed above, they were robbing
- 5:51me of that too before. And I want to put it into
- 5:54perspective. Let me ask you this question.
- 5:58If you were invited to a royal wedding, would you skip it?
- 6:04Would you trade it for another quote UN quote fun night out at
- 6:08the same bar that you always go to or binge watching ATV show
- 6:12that maybe you've already seen? Because I believe that a lot of
- 6:16people do not fully grasp what they're saying no to.
- 6:20If they did, they would have serious FOMO.
- 6:24Here's the thing, you're being offered a feast.
- 6:28VIP dining. Think the best steak, the finest
- 6:32wine, guaranteed joy and refreshment.
- 6:36Yet people still choose their routine, their same old mid
- 6:41meal. Guys, God is inviting you to His
- 6:45table to experience something incomparable to anything offered
- 6:50on this earth. Yes, it's even better than the
- 6:54newest Maserati, the priciest red wine, or the most memorable
- 6:58night out that you can imagine. This is not just any meal or one
- 7:02time thing. It is a lavish feast.
- 7:06And many never realize that there's something better because
- 7:09they remain so closed off in their heads, assuming that they
- 7:13already have what is best. And when that happens, you
- 7:17compromise, you settle, and you accept less than what's offered
- 7:22freely. That's why Jesus says at the end
- 7:24of this parable, many are invited, but few are chosen.
- 7:29Now I know that this might sound confusing because following
- 7:34Jesus does take sacrifice. Yes, you're giving up things
- 7:38that you're used to, but it is an exchange for something that
- 7:43lasts forever, eternally. And this is unlike the temporary
- 7:47things that you're trading in. And like I've mentioned in
- 7:52previous episodes, this invitation is for anyone and
- 7:56everyone. It's for the good and the bad.
- 7:59It does not matter what you've done in your past, how long
- 8:02you've ignored him, or how many times you've turned down this
- 8:06invite. Jesus has not returned yet,
- 8:09therefore the offer and the invite still stands.
- 8:13But here's something important. If you're invited to a wedding
- 8:18and you want to be there, you would think that you dress
- 8:21accordingly. And in that culture, guests were
- 8:25actually given special garments to wear at these banquets.
- 8:30And we see this man without wedding clothes.
- 8:33He wasn't forgotten or overlooked, but he refused what
- 8:36was offered to him and that refusal showed disrespect to the
- 8:40King. We have to remember God is holy
- 8:46and to attend His banquet we need holy garments.
- 8:51Jesus Christ, His one and only Son, came and sacrificed Himself
- 8:56on that cross to make a way for us.
- 8:59He takes our filthy, stained clothes and He gives us robes of
- 9:03righteousness instead, so that when God, our King, looks at us,
- 9:09He sees his righteous Son. But we still have to choose to
- 9:14put these on. We cannot accept the invite
- 9:18while refusing to honor and respect the King.
- 9:21It's an open invitation, but it's still sacred.
- 9:26And once you experience this feast, yo, I don't want you to
- 9:30miss this. You do not want to leave the
- 9:33feast. The best part?
- 9:36You don't have to leave it, ever.
- 9:39It doesn't end. Everything else starts to taste
- 9:43stale in comparison. Not to say that you will not be
- 9:46tempted to go back to your old way of life, but once you've
- 9:50seen what you have access to, you don't view those things the
- 9:53same way that you once did. Once you taste and see that the
- 9:59Lord is good, as it says throughout scripture, you
- 10:02realize that there is always more of Him.
- 10:05There's always more wisdom that He's willing to give you.
- 10:08More joy, more freedom, and honestly it reminds me of an all
- 10:14inclusive resort in a way. I know this probably sounds
- 10:17funny, but the rounds they just keep on coming.
- 10:20You can order whatever you want because there's always more
- 10:23revelation and more understanding with the Lord.
- 10:27There's more peace. And suddenly you begin to
- 10:30realize This is why I'm here. This is why I exist.
- 10:35You're meant to be in the presence of your King, and
- 10:39you're meant to invite others to join.
- 10:42This is why you may have heard people say my purpose to know
- 10:46him and to make him known. So I want to leave y'all with
- 10:50this closing challenge. Are you going to accept the
- 10:53invitation and attend the ongoing banquet?
- 10:58And if you already have, are you truly putting on the robes of
- 11:02righteousness that you've been offered, or are you continuing
- 11:07in what feels good, familiar, or maybe enough instead of honoring
- 11:13the King fully? Y'all, we cannot say yes to the
- 11:17invite while refusing to throw off what entangles us.
- 11:22You may have heard the term the grass or the phrase the grass is
- 11:25isn't always greener, but it is greener in a true relationship
- 11:30with Jesus at his table in his banquet preparing for his return
- 11:37and the wedding and the marriage of the lamb.
- 11:40So I'm going to end reading first Peter 4 three through 5
- 11:44over y'all. It is a very powerful one, but I
- 11:48think it's good to sit with and to remember.
- 11:52It says you have had enough in the past of the evil things that
- 11:56godless people enjoy, their immorality and lust, their
- 12:00feasting and drunkenness and wild parties, and their terrible
- 12:04worship of idols. Of course, your former friends
- 12:08are surprised when you no longer plunge into the flood of wild
- 12:12and destructive things they do, so they slander you.
- 12:16But remember that they will have to face God, who stands ready to
- 12:21judge everyone, both the living and the dead.
- 12:26Wow, that is a good one. And you might want to re listen
- 12:32over that section or go and read it.
- 12:35But I'm going to end in prayer right now.
- 12:36So bow your heads. Heavenly Father, thank you so
- 12:43much for your invitation, not just to heaven someday, but into
- 12:47your presence right now, today. Forgive us for the times that
- 12:53we've been distracted, unimpressed, or too busy to come
- 12:59When you call us. Lord, help us to throw off
- 13:04whatever entangles us, whatever is hindering us from going all
- 13:08in with you. Jesus, may we be willing to put
- 13:11on the righteousness that you have provided for us.
- 13:16Lord, we choose your table over everything else.
- 13:20Educate us to honor You fully and to invite others into what
- 13:26you have prepared. We praise you God, we give you
- 13:30all the glory. We ask this all in your name,
- 13:33Jesus. Amen.
- 13:36OK, I hope that y'all enjoy this one.
- 13:39It is one of my faves and there is a lot to consider.
- 13:44So go and ask the Lord what He wants to continue speaking over
- 13:50you and into your heart. And I hope you all have a
- 13:52blessed weekend.
