- 0:29Speaker 1: Welcome to Table Talk here at the Philadelphia Sports Table
- 0:32Speaker 1: podcast show, the longest running weekly Philly sports podcast show
- 0:35Speaker 1: in the world. That's right, twelve years strong. We got
- 0:38Speaker 1: a great guest this week on our interview show, and
- 0:41Speaker 1: I gotta tell you, folks, you know, we've seen him
- 0:44Speaker 1: and spoken to him a number of times over the
- 0:47Speaker 1: years as it pertains to college football, college football prospects, NFL.
- 0:51Speaker 2: Talk, and news.
- 0:53Speaker 1: But we're not doing that, folks this week with this
- 0:55Speaker 1: two particular gentlemen here, we are finally going to dive
- 0:59Speaker 1: into some four formula one. That's right, some f one
- 1:02Speaker 1: talk here at the Philadelphia Sports Table podcast show. We've
- 1:05Speaker 1: got our good buddy who writes for SB Nation, Mark Scofield.
- 1:08Speaker 2: How you doing Mark, I'm doing well, Jeff. It is
- 1:11Speaker 2: fantastic to be here.
- 1:13Speaker 3: I'm really excited about today's show because I get to
- 1:16Speaker 3: take the NFL football hat off. Yeah, and put will
- 1:19Speaker 3: be the one hat on which I do enjoy doing.
- 1:23Speaker 3: It's been fun to dive into this world over the
- 1:25Speaker 3: past couple of years. I you know, as we're going
- 1:27Speaker 3: to talk about it, I was down in Miami all
- 1:29Speaker 3: last week from Miami Company, and so it's been a
- 1:32Speaker 3: fun F one season so far. It's been fun diving
- 1:34Speaker 3: into the sport and I'm excited to chop it up
- 1:36Speaker 3: with you about it.
- 1:36Speaker 1: Sounds good, Mark, I know you're over on Blue Sky.
- 1:39Speaker 1: I think you're also on Threads as well. Again, sbnation
- 1:43Speaker 1: dot com. Folks head to F one and you're gonna
- 1:45Speaker 1: be able to find a lot of Mark's material there.
- 1:47Speaker 1: But where can folks find you on the interwebs out
- 1:49Speaker 1: there if they want to follow you?
- 1:51Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean, you know, like you said, sp nation
- 1:53Speaker 3: dot com is the way to find all the pieces.
- 1:56Speaker 3: But yeah, with social media sort of splinter and in
- 2:00Speaker 3: fracture and the way it has for the last couple
- 2:01Speaker 3: of years, I mean, you know, finding some new spots.
- 2:04Speaker 3: So it's Mark Schofield three nine one six on Threads
- 2:07Speaker 3: and then Mark Schofield on Blue Sky. That's where I
- 2:09Speaker 3: do most of the stuff. Now, you know, I pretty
- 2:12Speaker 3: much cross post between the two. So if you're on
- 2:14Speaker 3: one or the other, that's where you'll be able to
- 2:16Speaker 3: find me.
- 2:16Speaker 1: All right, very good, Well let's get into some F
- 2:18Speaker 1: one talk right here. And again, like I mentioned, we
- 2:23Speaker 1: haven't dove into F one talk here at the Philadelphia
- 2:26Speaker 1: Sports Table podcast show, so our listeners may not necessarily
- 2:29Speaker 1: be quote up to speed on what Formula one really is,
- 2:34Speaker 1: where it came from. And I think, you know, we
- 2:36Speaker 1: look at the history of Formula one racing, mark we can,
- 2:40Speaker 1: you know, we look back to nineteen twenties, nineteen thirties
- 2:43Speaker 1: over in Europe where it really started, and then it
- 2:45Speaker 1: came over here to the US in about nineteen fifty nine,
- 2:49Speaker 1: where some folks witnessed for the very first time, uh
- 2:52Speaker 1: what F one was at the United States Grand Prix,
- 2:55Speaker 1: which was held in Florida. It began evolving more and more,
- 2:58Speaker 1: gaining popularity over the years and decades. But I feel
- 3:03Speaker 1: like there was an F one surge within the past
- 3:06Speaker 1: ten years or so. I could be wrong with that,
- 3:08Speaker 1: but I'm wondering, if you can kind of take us through,
- 3:11Speaker 1: when did that surge of F one really start happening
- 3:15Speaker 1: in our contemporary history here and why do you think
- 3:17Speaker 1: it moved to another level and achelon within the sports world.
- 3:22Speaker 3: Yeah, and you can ask anybody this sort of question
- 3:27Speaker 3: that's in the F one world, and the first thing
- 3:29Speaker 3: they'll bring up his Drifter Survive, the Netflix docuseries, which
- 3:33Speaker 3: you know, debuted a couple of years ago really sort
- 3:35Speaker 3: of caught fire, i'd say during COVID. If you think
- 3:39Speaker 3: back during COVID, when people were sort of under lockdown
- 3:42Speaker 3: looking for things to do. Tiger Kane, Animal Cross and
- 3:45Speaker 3: those were some of the you know, docuseries, video games,
- 3:49Speaker 3: and people started to playoff. Drafters Survived was in like
- 3:51Speaker 3: its third season, you know, during COVID, but people sort
- 3:56Speaker 3: of dove into it and liked what they saw. And
- 4:00Speaker 3: while the Netflix docu series Drivers Survive is heavily i'd
- 4:03Speaker 3: say dramatized, you know, they use some creative editing. For example,
- 4:09Speaker 3: they play up things, rivalries, emotions that maybe aren't as
- 4:15Speaker 3: heightened as they seem in the show. What the series
- 4:19Speaker 3: did was really reintroduce old fans, new fans, curious fans
- 4:27Speaker 3: to the personalities. And as we get into this social
- 4:32Speaker 3: media error, as we get deeper into this social media era,
- 4:36Speaker 3: learn it about the personalities, the people, the drivers under
- 4:39Speaker 3: the helmet, the team principles, the men and women behind
- 4:41Speaker 3: the scenes, the men and women trying to get on
- 4:43Speaker 3: the grid.
- 4:44Speaker 2: That's hooked people.
- 4:45Speaker 3: In and it's converted a lot of casual race car fans,
- 4:49Speaker 3: you know, casual f one fans into more hardcore fans,
- 4:54Speaker 3: and so I think, you know, you talk to a
- 4:55Speaker 3: lot of people, they'll say, first the main thing is
- 4:58Speaker 3: drive to survive. Also think that the teams themselves, and
- 5:03Speaker 3: to a certain extent, the athletes themselves, have realized their marketability.
- 5:09Speaker 3: And let's face it, Formula one, like you walk into
- 5:14Speaker 3: the paddock on Sunday at race day, whether it's Miami, Austin, wherever.
- 5:19Speaker 2: It's late stage capitalism, like.
- 5:21Speaker 3: There are plans everywhere, there are activations everywhere. There is
- 5:26Speaker 3: a lot of money at a Formula one track with
- 5:29Speaker 3: good reason. You know, sponsors pay a lot of money.
- 5:32Speaker 3: They want to be associated with world famous drivers. It's
- 5:35Speaker 3: a glamorous lifestyle that they're trying to sell to potential customers.
- 5:39Speaker 3: And the drivers themselves are a big part of that.
- 5:42Speaker 3: And so whether it's their own social media, you know, teams,
- 5:46Speaker 3: the teams themselves. You know, for example, last year's cyber
- 5:51Speaker 3: dead Last on the Grid had a very slow car,
- 5:53Speaker 3: Valutui bought us and zogwon. You neither one of them
- 5:55Speaker 3: have a full time seat right now, but their social
- 5:57Speaker 3: media team did such a great job that their sponsor
- 6:00Speaker 3: were still happy with what they were seeing, and so
- 6:03Speaker 3: they've marketed the drivers extremely well, which again creates that
- 6:07Speaker 3: connection between drivers and potential fans or new fans. So
- 6:11Speaker 3: I think the social media aspect of it and the
- 6:15Speaker 3: accessibility of the sport and the willingness of F one
- 6:18Speaker 3: teams and F one themselves to open the doors to
- 6:21Speaker 3: smaller content creators and things like that has certainly helped.
- 6:25Speaker 3: And we're going to see something else, Jeff over this summer.
- 6:28Speaker 3: That's the F one movie. You know, we'll recording this
- 6:31Speaker 3: on Monday morning. They just released the final theatrical trailer.
- 6:34Speaker 3: You've got a movie star in Brad Pittonhabrier Bardek, You've
- 6:37Speaker 3: got a movie produced by Jerry Bruckheimer and Lewis Hamilton.
- 6:42Speaker 2: They have gone all out for this. I mean they
- 6:45Speaker 2: were filming during race.
- 6:47Speaker 3: Weekends, you know, with that car that they built up
- 6:50Speaker 3: against Verstappen and Leclair and drivers on the grid. I mean,
- 6:53Speaker 3: you see this trailer and it's basically like Top Gun
- 6:57Speaker 3: Maverick on an F one draft and they've put a
- 6:59Speaker 3: lot behind it. In Miami, they had in the Paddock,
- 7:02Speaker 3: a fictional garage where they released the soundtrack. You could
- 7:06Speaker 3: walk through the garage as you could stand on a podium.
- 7:09Speaker 3: They made little trading cards. I've got one of myself
- 7:11Speaker 3: where it's going to chip at it. You put it
- 7:13Speaker 3: next to your phone and the soundtrack pops up on
- 7:15Speaker 3: your phone. You know, they had the actual APSGP F
- 7:19Speaker 3: one card that they built for the movie, just sitting
- 7:22Speaker 3: there in the paddock.
- 7:23Speaker 2: And so I think this F.
- 7:24Speaker 3: One movie as well, is going to again kick this
- 7:28Speaker 3: further into gear. And now we've got three races here
- 7:32Speaker 3: in the States. You know, we've got Miami, We've got Austin,
- 7:35Speaker 3: which is the longest running race on the calendar, and
- 7:37Speaker 3: now you've got Las Vegas, which just debuted a few
- 7:39Speaker 3: seasons ago. You know, Italy has two, We've got three.
- 7:44Speaker 3: That tells you how critical the US market is to
- 7:47Speaker 3: F one themselves. And in Miami they announced an extension
- 7:51Speaker 3: of the current contract for the Miami Grand Prix through
- 7:54Speaker 3: twenty forty one. Like you had the press in the
- 7:59Speaker 3: conference room. In the press conference room with Tom Garfinkel,
- 8:02Speaker 3: the manager partner of the Miami Grand Prix, and Stefan o'domcali,
- 8:05Speaker 3: the president and CEO of F one, we were all
- 8:08Speaker 3: asking ourselves we might not be here. You know, that's
- 8:11Speaker 3: a long extension, but that tells you the commitment of
- 8:14Speaker 3: this sport to f one here in the United States.
- 8:17Speaker 1: It really is amazing. You talk about personalities too, and
- 8:20Speaker 1: I find it so astonishing and it's such an eye
- 8:24Speaker 1: opening aspect of the sports world in general, where personalities
- 8:29Speaker 1: drive so much of our interest in the world of sports. Mark,
- 8:34Speaker 1: I mean, you and I've talked football for so many years.
- 8:37Speaker 1: Look what just happened with Shirdor Sanders and the storylines
- 8:40Speaker 1: with him based on personality, the Sanders family, that personality
- 8:44Speaker 1: of who they are and what they are. You know,
- 8:46Speaker 1: let's move to the Philadelphia Eagles, Jalen Hurts, his personality,
- 8:49Speaker 1: the narratives that come from that in Philly, Bryce Harper,
- 8:52Speaker 1: the you know, what he has done with the Phillies,
- 8:55Speaker 1: his personality and what comes with that really is amazing
- 8:58Speaker 1: to me. How personal drives so much, excuse the pun,
- 9:03Speaker 1: you know, drive so much of how we like to
- 9:07Speaker 1: really consume sports in general. It really is. It really
- 9:10Speaker 1: is quite astonishing.
- 9:12Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean, it's a personality driven world at this point. Yeah,
- 9:16Speaker 3: I mean, you know, for example, my pathway to Formula one,
- 9:20Speaker 3: I grew up in the Boston area.
- 9:22Speaker 2: You can hear the accent.
- 9:23Speaker 3: I was a team sports kid growing up Red Sox,
- 9:26Speaker 3: Brilliant Celtics, Patriots.
- 9:28Speaker 2: Then I go to.
- 9:29Speaker 3: College and get more access to the internet, you know,
- 9:33Speaker 3: you get more access to ESPN around the cloth, and
- 9:37Speaker 3: I'm hearing things about you know, Benetton, and I'm like,
- 9:40Speaker 3: that's that's a switcher company. I mean, it's a team.
- 9:44Speaker 3: And then that introduces me to Michael Schumacher and instantly
- 9:47Speaker 3: I'm hooked. You know, I'm fascinated by this. And then
- 9:50Speaker 3: you know, Michael Schumacher got me in the door. Lewis
- 9:52Speaker 3: Hamilton made me stick for this sport, and so, you know,
- 9:57Speaker 3: the personality is really sort of and you know I've
- 10:02Speaker 3: said this before Jeff f one drivers are just built differently.
- 10:06Speaker 3: Their race car drivers are built differently. The men and
- 10:09Speaker 3: women that do this, the colm into the cars are different.
- 10:12Speaker 3: And you know, here's a quick story to that. When
- 10:17Speaker 3: I was in Miami last year in twenty four I
- 10:19Speaker 3: sat down with Jack Doan, who last year was a
- 10:22Speaker 3: reserve driver at Alpine. He started this year as a
- 10:25Speaker 3: full time driver but was just demoted after Miami. They
- 10:28Speaker 3: let it another driver sitting and see for at least
- 10:30Speaker 3: five races to see what he can do. And Alpine's
- 10:34Speaker 3: an interesting story because in the past two years they've
- 10:37Speaker 3: gotten a lot of famous investors buying in. Patrick Mahomes,
- 10:41Speaker 3: Travis Kelce, Michael b Jordan, Rory McElroy, And so I
- 10:45Speaker 3: thought it was a throwaway question. Jeff I asked him, well,
- 10:48Speaker 3: when these new investors were announced, who are you most
- 10:50Speaker 3: excited to meet?
- 10:51Speaker 2: Jack?
- 10:52Speaker 3: And he looked at me and he said, Anthony Joshua.
- 10:54Speaker 3: Anthony Joshua, former heavyweight champion, you know, Britce Bokxer. Yeah,
- 10:59Speaker 3: And I was like, well, why am he say? Well,
- 11:02Speaker 3: he gets in the ren and he puts it all
- 11:03Speaker 3: on the line. One punching. It could be over, it
- 11:05Speaker 3: could be done, he could be dead. And that's what
- 11:07Speaker 3: we do. We climb in the car, we put it
- 11:09Speaker 3: all on the line, we go into the corner. We're
- 11:12Speaker 3: trying to be the last to break. We're doing a
- 11:14Speaker 3: two hundred and forty miles an hour. We've made the
- 11:16Speaker 3: sports safer, but it's not ever going to be completely safe.
- 11:19Speaker 3: Do you have to be willing to die? And I
- 11:23Speaker 3: literally choked up at the moment, like, look, that's what
- 11:26Speaker 3: they live with, that's what they do, and they're just
- 11:29Speaker 3: like I said, they're built differently. And then when you
- 11:32Speaker 3: could take somebody like that and then see them, you know,
- 11:36Speaker 3: selling sweatshirt, selling apparel, selling yachts, selling whatever like those
- 11:41Speaker 3: are facinating personalities to get to know and that connection
- 11:45Speaker 3: with them drives this sports popularity all over the world.
- 11:49Speaker 1: It really is amazing. You said they're built differently. Look,
- 11:52Speaker 1: they absolutely are. I would never do it. I don't
- 11:55Speaker 1: want to die, Mark.
- 11:57Speaker 2: Right, you know, it's interesting. Another quick story.
- 12:01Speaker 3: This is more Indy Car than F one, but there's
- 12:03Speaker 3: obviously a lot of overlap. Last week I interviewed Nolan Siegel,
- 12:07Speaker 3: who's twenty years old. He drives her Arrow McClaren and
- 12:10Speaker 3: their Indy Car team, you know, and they've got the
- 12:13Speaker 3: Indianapolis five hundred coming up later this month, one of,
- 12:15Speaker 3: if not the biggest racing event in the entire world
- 12:19Speaker 3: right now. Last year he was a part time driver.
- 12:22Speaker 3: He was trying to qualify for the Indianapolis five hundred.
- 12:25Speaker 3: He was in what's called last chance qualifying. It's the
- 12:28Speaker 3: final portion of qualifying where the drivers at the bottom
- 12:30Speaker 3: of the table are fighting for those final spots.
- 12:34Speaker 2: He was the last driver to go. He had already
- 12:36Speaker 2: had a really bad crash in practice that week and
- 12:40Speaker 2: he told his team, look, I'm either put this car
- 12:42Speaker 2: in the wall or on the grid. And he had
- 12:44Speaker 2: a really bad accident. But asking him about it, he's like, look,
- 12:48Speaker 2: you know, that's what you have to do. That's the job,
- 12:49Speaker 2: that's what we do, that's what you signed up for. Like, yes,
- 12:53Speaker 2: when you're going to forty five and you've got a
- 12:56Speaker 2: brick wall that you're going towards and you have to turn,
- 13:00Speaker 2: it can get scary.
- 13:01Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 13:01Speaker 3: I reviewed Alexander Rossi, who won the sixteen Indianapolis five
- 13:05Speaker 3: hundred as a rookie, and I asked him, you know,
- 13:07Speaker 3: first question, what is two forty five you know, into
- 13:10Speaker 3: a corner at Indianapolis sound and feel like? And he's like,
- 13:13Speaker 3: it's scary. It's honestly scary. But that's what we do
- 13:16Speaker 3: and that's what we love. They're absolutely built differently and
- 13:20Speaker 3: their willingness to put it all on the line, you know,
- 13:23Speaker 3: hats off to them.
- 13:24Speaker 2: Man.
- 13:24Speaker 1: Yeah. Absolutely. Look, as we're moving along with the conversation here, Mark,
- 13:28Speaker 1: I really wanted to talk about the technology that is
- 13:32Speaker 1: involved with F one because in recent years, I mean,
- 13:35Speaker 1: the sport has seen a number of changes, and I'm
- 13:38Speaker 1: hoping we could dive into some of them here to
- 13:40Speaker 1: give some more information and context about F one two
- 13:43Speaker 1: hour listeners. Significant advances in technology like hybrid engines and
- 13:49Speaker 1: ground effect aerodynamics have really been at the forefront of
- 13:54Speaker 1: F one trends. I'm wondering if you can talk about
- 13:58Speaker 1: these tech trends in more detail and why they're so
- 14:01Speaker 1: important to F one as a sport.
- 14:04Speaker 3: Well, technological advancements get to the heart of Formula one
- 14:08Speaker 3: as a sport.
- 14:08Speaker 2: Yeah, you know, and in many.
- 14:10Speaker 3: Ways, F one is as much a race to be
- 14:14Speaker 3: won by the drivers as it is an engineering riddle
- 14:17Speaker 3: to be solved by the team's engineers and developers at
- 14:20Speaker 3: the factory. And let's put it, since you know, you
- 14:23Speaker 3: and I have spent so much time talking football over
- 14:25Speaker 3: the years, let's put it into this sort of analogy here.
- 14:29Speaker 3: Imagine if Roger Goodell came out today and said, started
- 14:32Speaker 3: in twenty twenty seven, passing touchdowns are worth ten points,
- 14:36Speaker 3: not six. Right field goes over fifty yards are worth
- 14:39Speaker 3: five points, not three. You're gonna change things as a team, right,
- 14:43Speaker 3: You're gonna up your passing game you're gonna go out
- 14:46Speaker 3: and find a big legged kicker, right Well, Formula one
- 14:49Speaker 3: does that. Every few years. They rewrite the technical regulations
- 14:55Speaker 3: and so nothing is static. Things change all the time.
- 14:59Speaker 3: Starting next we have a whole new set of technical
- 15:02Speaker 3: regulations that are going to go into effect, where you're
- 15:05Speaker 3: going to have movable aerodynamics, both the front and the
- 15:08Speaker 3: rear wings. They're going to open and close at various
- 15:11Speaker 3: points throughout the lap at a given circuit, so you
- 15:15Speaker 3: can get either less drag or more downforce and an
- 15:18Speaker 3: ability to turn better in the corners. You're going to
- 15:21Speaker 3: get a fifty to fifty split between the on the
- 15:24Speaker 3: power units, between the internal combustion engine and the battery
- 15:28Speaker 3: hybrid portion of the engine. You're going to be running
- 15:31Speaker 3: these cars on one hundred fully sustainable fuels, and you're
- 15:35Speaker 3: going to have lighter cars. You're going to be thirty
- 15:37Speaker 3: kilograms as of right now, lighter than the current iteration
- 15:40Speaker 3: the current generations of cars. And they do this every
- 15:43Speaker 3: couple of years. I mean, we had new regulations going
- 15:45Speaker 3: to effect in twenty two. Now we get out of
- 15:47Speaker 3: them in twenty six, and so they rewrite everything. And
- 15:53Speaker 3: the reason for that is it's to encourage technological development,
- 15:58Speaker 3: not just in the sport, but on the road. You know,
- 16:02Speaker 3: when you've got a manufacturer like Forward, for example, they're
- 16:05Speaker 3: joining as a power unit manufacturer next year in a
- 16:08Speaker 3: partnership with Red Bull. Red Bull been in a Ponda
- 16:11Speaker 3: for years. They powered for what happens, wins and everything.
- 16:13Speaker 3: Now you've got Red bulling Forward in this new partnership
- 16:16Speaker 3: because Ford's thinking, you know, if we can build a
- 16:20Speaker 3: power unit that accounts for fifty percent of the power
- 16:23Speaker 3: for an F one car from the battery, we can
- 16:27Speaker 3: we can work with that on our road cars. You know,
- 16:29Speaker 3: if you're running cars, you developing power units that are
- 16:32Speaker 3: running one hundred percent sustainable fuels.
- 16:34Speaker 2: That's something you can take to the road. You know.
- 16:36Speaker 2: That's why you've got Audi.
- 16:38Speaker 3: Next year joining as an engine manufacturer power unit manufacturer.
- 16:42Speaker 3: Cadillac is going to be the eleventh team on the grid.
- 16:44Speaker 3: Now they're going to be a customer of Ferrari, so
- 16:47Speaker 3: they'll have Ferrari power units to start, but they're going
- 16:50Speaker 3: to have their own power units started and I believe
- 16:52Speaker 3: twenty nine and they want to be a part of
- 16:55Speaker 3: this because the technological advances that are pushed forward by
- 16:59Speaker 3: F one, and there new regulations, you can translate those
- 17:03Speaker 3: advancements and what you learn from that process to your
- 17:06Speaker 3: road cars as a manufacturer. And so technological advancements are
- 17:11Speaker 3: a huge part of this board. And again they rewrite
- 17:15Speaker 3: everything every couple of years, which is why I'll dive
- 17:19Speaker 3: into this in a few minutes. But teams are facing
- 17:21Speaker 3: a fascinating choice right now because of the cost cap,
- 17:24Speaker 3: a budget cap where you can only spend so much money,
- 17:27Speaker 3: You can only do so much each year, you know,
- 17:30Speaker 3: in terms of development of the car in season. Teams
- 17:34Speaker 3: are looking at the way things are right now, and
- 17:36Speaker 3: a lot of teams have decided, you know what, we're
- 17:39Speaker 3: probably going to focus now in twenty six because if
- 17:41Speaker 3: you can get a leg up, like when F one
- 17:44Speaker 3: went to the turbocharged era, Mercedes dominating, you know, because
- 17:48Speaker 3: they got a leg up in you know, that first
- 17:51Speaker 3: year and through those regulations. Mercedes went in a wildly
- 17:54Speaker 3: different direction of the current set of regulations. They tried
- 17:57Speaker 3: that zero pod configuration to their chassis. It didn't work,
- 18:02Speaker 3: and Red Bull you know, dominated this last era up
- 18:05Speaker 3: until last season, and so they rewrite the record book.
- 18:08Speaker 3: It's an engineering problem that these teams have to solve
- 18:12Speaker 3: and if I can make one recommendation, this book right here,
- 18:15Speaker 3: How to Build a Car by Adrian Newey. Okay, one
- 18:18Speaker 3: of the greatest engineers and designers in the sports history.
- 18:21Speaker 3: It was massive news last year in Miami when the
- 18:23Speaker 3: announcement came he was leaving Red Bull for Aston Martin.
- 18:26Speaker 3: He just started in March talking with Fernandol Lawnso down
- 18:30Speaker 3: in Miami two weeks ago and they basically said, Adrian
- 18:32Speaker 3: Newey is laser focused on twenty six. They're a customer,
- 18:36Speaker 3: you know right now with Mercedes, but they're going to
- 18:38Speaker 3: have their own power unit. But there's a belief that hey,
- 18:41Speaker 3: if Neui gets it right, Aston Martin could be dominant
- 18:43Speaker 3: in the next era of regulations and so technological development
- 18:47Speaker 3: and advancements. It's at the heart of this sport and
- 18:50Speaker 3: it's really what this sport is all about.
- 18:53Speaker 1: Yeah. Absolutely, And you know we talk about the trends
- 18:56Speaker 1: and how trends in sports and that and here with
- 18:59Speaker 1: our discussion with F one continue to change over time,
- 19:02Speaker 1: and another trend that we have seen more and more
- 19:06Speaker 1: in terms of intensifying over the years is just rivalries. Mark.
- 19:10Speaker 1: I mean, whether it's Mercedes versus Red Bull, you know,
- 19:13Speaker 1: one of the defining rivalries of this era is so
- 19:17Speaker 1: interesting to watch and to even learn about here. So
- 19:20Speaker 1: I know this is an elementary type of question, but
- 19:24Speaker 1: how do these rivalries really start and sustain themselves in
- 19:28Speaker 1: F one? And I would imagine it does enhance the
- 19:31Speaker 1: F one experience.
- 19:33Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean, look, rivalries tend to enhance sports, right exactly,
- 19:37Speaker 3: whether it's state Ohio state, whether it's you know, Eagles commanders,
- 19:42Speaker 3: these Red Sox like rivalries tend to you know, spur excitement,
- 19:47Speaker 3: generate controversy, you know, get people's attention. Historically in F one, though,
- 19:53Speaker 3: rivalries have been amongst drivers, right like you know, sometimes
- 19:57Speaker 3: it's drivers on opposite teams, you know, set versus prosts.
- 20:01Speaker 3: You know, Nikki Lauder versus James Hunt, which was the
- 20:03Speaker 3: inspiration for the movie Rush. You know, you had James Hunt,
- 20:06Speaker 3: this international playboy that you know, like to live the
- 20:09Speaker 3: lifestyle away from the track as much as he did
- 20:11Speaker 3: on the track. Whereas you had Nikki Laud of this
- 20:13Speaker 3: Austrian that was basically a robot that like lived eight
- 20:17Speaker 3: slept driving a race car. Two wildly different people that
- 20:21Speaker 3: were rivals on the track, but grew to have a
- 20:23Speaker 3: genuine connection and friendship because of what they went through.
- 20:27Speaker 3: So historically it's been drivers. What's been interesting with Red
- 20:31Speaker 3: Bull and Mercedes. And while there was a Hamilton versus Verstappen,
- 20:34Speaker 3: you know, we all know what happened in twenty one,
- 20:36Speaker 3: you know, a championship between those two that went down
- 20:38Speaker 3: to the final corners and ended in controversial fashion. Right,
- 20:43Speaker 3: there is a bit of a team person team principal
- 20:48Speaker 3: rivalry between Total Wolf the team principal at Mercedes, and
- 20:51Speaker 3: Christian and Horner, the team principal at Red Bull. They
- 20:54Speaker 3: respect each other, They certainly respect each other as a
- 20:56Speaker 3: compliments accomplishments. I mean they're, you know, to the long
- 21:00Speaker 3: tenured team principles in the history of the sport. You know,
- 21:03Speaker 3: Wolf has won a ton of championships at Mercedes, Drivers'
- 21:06Speaker 3: championships with Hamilton, Corners won you know, drivers' championships, Constructor's
- 21:11Speaker 3: championships with Red Bull. They respect each other, but they
- 21:15Speaker 3: love nothing more than to needle each other. Like I
- 21:18Speaker 3: think there's I don't want to say a genuine dislike,
- 21:22Speaker 3: but I think there's an enjoyment that they get out
- 21:24Speaker 3: of poked and prodded and trying to provoke the other.
- 21:26Speaker 3: I mean, for example, Team Principal's press conference in Miami.
- 21:30Speaker 3: You know, on Friday a couple of weeks ago, Wolf
- 21:33Speaker 3: walks in. He's got this like weird T shirt and
- 21:36Speaker 3: white jeans on. He's not wearing the usual Mercedes like
- 21:39Speaker 3: get up. He's wearing something a little different, something a
- 21:41Speaker 3: little special that the team is doing for one of
- 21:43Speaker 3: their activations in Miami. And Horner, who's there in the
- 21:46Speaker 3: Red Bull shirt and buttoned down and slacks. He looks
- 21:48Speaker 3: at him, he says, is this some sort of midlife crisis?
- 21:52Speaker 2: Like?
- 21:52Speaker 3: These are the kinds? Then they say to each other.
- 21:54Speaker 3: When there was all the controversy last year about Christian
- 21:58Speaker 3: Horner being investigated for potential like you know, sexual misconduct
- 22:01Speaker 3: with a subordinate it had Red Bull, and there were
- 22:04Speaker 3: rumors about whether for staffing was happy at Red Bull.
- 22:07Speaker 3: Total Wolf did not hide his intentions of potentially signing
- 22:11Speaker 3: Max for stapping a way he talked about it anytime
- 22:13Speaker 3: he was close to a microphone, because it was a
- 22:15Speaker 3: way to get under Horner's skin. And now you're seeing
- 22:17Speaker 3: it with McLaren ceo Zach Brown, who you know if
- 22:20Speaker 3: you watch Drivers Survive from last season, you know, talks
- 22:22Speaker 3: about how, you know, we'll see if we can push
- 22:24Speaker 3: Horner to the breaking point, and Horner on camera looks
- 22:27Speaker 3: into the camera and says, you know, straight faced.
- 22:29Speaker 2: Zach Brown's a prick.
- 22:31Speaker 3: Like these team principles are getting involved as well, right
- 22:37Speaker 3: with some of the personality stuff. They like meat and
- 22:40Speaker 3: needling each other when they can, And so I think
- 22:43Speaker 3: that's fed into a bit of a Mark versus Red
- 22:45Speaker 3: Bull type of rivalry where you've got Wolf and Horner
- 22:50Speaker 3: poking in prod of each other every way they can
- 22:52Speaker 3: through the media.
- 22:53Speaker 1: All right, very good again, folks, we're talking to Mark
- 22:55Speaker 1: Schofield from sb Nation. Head on over to esp nation
- 22:58Speaker 1: dot com or just search out on various social sites,
- 23:02Speaker 1: specifically blue Sky and threads. We are gonna take just
- 23:06Speaker 1: a quick break, folks, and we're gonna be back in
- 23:09Speaker 1: just a bit. Stick with us. All right, we are
- 23:13Speaker 1: back again. We got Mark Schofield from eSPI Nation dot com.
- 23:18Speaker 1: Search him out on threads and also over on blue Sky.
- 23:21Speaker 1: He's a great, great follow. As we're diving into f
- 23:25Speaker 1: one here, and Mark, you mentioned that you were in
- 23:29Speaker 1: Miami last week for the Miami Grand Prix, Oscar Postrey. Yes,
- 23:36Speaker 1: my gosh, dear lord, Oscar Piastre. He won the Miami
- 23:41Speaker 1: Grand Prix, really strengthened his lead within the World Championships.
- 23:46Speaker 1: Fourth victory this season. What kind of history is Postre
- 23:52Speaker 1: making here in twenty twenty five and how should we
- 23:55Speaker 1: be looking at his season?
- 23:58Speaker 3: Well, I mean the short answer is not yet, okay,
- 24:01Speaker 3: I mean we are a couple of years removed from
- 24:03Speaker 3: in twenty three. There were twenty three races because Imlo
- 24:07Speaker 3: was canceled that year due to flooded and Max ver
- 24:10Speaker 3: Staffing won.
- 24:10Speaker 2: Nineteen races that year.
- 24:12Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean, you know, Chack Opera has won two,
- 24:15Speaker 3: so you had Red Bull with in all but one race,
- 24:16Speaker 3: and then Carlo Sons Junior one in Singapore when he
- 24:19Speaker 3: was driving for Ferrari. Now he's with Williams. So you know,
- 24:22Speaker 3: Piastre's won four of six. That's very good. But we're
- 24:26Speaker 3: not close to the kind of dominance that we saw
- 24:30Speaker 3: from vers staff in that year. And what's really interested
- 24:33Speaker 3: about what's happening with McLaren right now, And I know
- 24:35Speaker 3: we're going to talk about them in a minute, but
- 24:38Speaker 3: they have two very good drivers. Yeah, two extremely good
- 24:41Speaker 3: drivers in Oscar Piastre and London Norris. And what's interesting
- 24:45Speaker 3: about that is, you know they've set their team up
- 24:49Speaker 3: where they have like a one A and a one
- 24:51Speaker 3: B or two number one drivers, whereas Red Bull historically
- 24:54Speaker 3: has always had like a preferred driver. Now it's first
- 24:57Speaker 3: staff and somebody that they look to as somebody that
- 25:00Speaker 3: can like help out and help Max when he can
- 25:03Speaker 3: when they can, and make sure the team can contend
- 25:06Speaker 3: for a constructor's title. So will be interesting as we
- 25:10Speaker 3: get deeper into the season if you know, Lando and
- 25:14Speaker 3: Oscar end up taking points off of each other, which
- 25:17Speaker 3: perhaps perhaps keeps First Stapping in striking range of a
- 25:20Speaker 3: driver's championship in a way that happened last year. You
- 25:25Speaker 3: know McLaren certainly they brought an upgrade, upgrade package to
- 25:28Speaker 3: Miami and they were lights out for the most part
- 25:33Speaker 3: since then. But yeah, Lando winning some races, you had
- 25:35Speaker 3: Oscar winning some races. You had for Stapping winning when
- 25:38Speaker 3: he could, and it was enough for for Stapping to
- 25:40Speaker 3: win the drivers even though McLaren won the constructors championship
- 25:44Speaker 3: with Ferrari second. And so you wonder, when we start
- 25:47Speaker 3: thinking about the drivers, you know Oscar has that sixteen
- 25:50Speaker 3: point lead now o Orlando, but will they continue to
- 25:52Speaker 3: take points off of each other and leave the door
- 25:55Speaker 3: open for a Max ver Stapping, you know, to win
- 25:58Speaker 3: another driver's title. Even though McLaren seem to be runned
- 26:01Speaker 3: away from things right now with respect to Oscar specifically,
- 26:07Speaker 3: he's iceman like, like I know that nickname has already
- 26:10Speaker 3: been taken here in the sport of F one, right,
- 26:13Speaker 3: But you can talk to him after he wins a race.
- 26:18Speaker 3: You can talk to him after he finishes p nineteen
- 26:21Speaker 3: and it's the same human being, like there is no highs,
- 26:26Speaker 3: there are no lows. He's completely even keeled. And what's
- 26:30Speaker 3: been interested with postre versus for Stappen as opposed to
- 26:34Speaker 3: no risk versus for Stappin? Oscar knows how to race
- 26:39Speaker 3: Max Max. One of the most endurant moments from last
- 26:43Speaker 3: F one season for me Jeff was in Austin. You know,
- 26:48Speaker 3: Lando and Max had another battle in that race. You know,
- 26:51Speaker 3: there was a penalty handed out and you know neither
- 26:55Speaker 3: one of them one, and it was in a moment
- 26:58Speaker 3: where Lando was trying everything he could to get close
- 27:03Speaker 3: enough to Max to potentially win the driver's title, and
- 27:08Speaker 3: Max really got his elbows out in that race. And
- 27:12Speaker 3: speaking with Lando after that race, you could see in
- 27:15Speaker 3: his face. Lando is a very very open, very honest,
- 27:20Speaker 3: very self critical human being, very self critical athlete. And
- 27:23Speaker 3: I've spoken with him on multiple occasions now and he
- 27:27Speaker 3: doesn't hold his opinions back. Some people say he's almost
- 27:30Speaker 3: too open with his self awareness with his struggles with
- 27:34Speaker 3: mental health. He's been very open about that, which I
- 27:36Speaker 3: commend him for personally.
- 27:38Speaker 2: And I could see.
- 27:39Speaker 3: That afternoon, that's Sunday in Austin, Jeff, the realization in
- 27:43Speaker 3: Lando's eyes that if he wants to beat Max, he
- 27:47Speaker 3: has to do what we talked about, to be willing
- 27:49Speaker 3: to literally put it all out on a line because
- 27:51Speaker 3: Max restaff but he's going to race you hard. He's
- 27:54Speaker 3: going to push the limits of the rule book. And
- 27:56Speaker 3: Lando has struggled over the past year and a half.
- 28:00Speaker 3: I've realized just what it takes to pass and overtake
- 28:03Speaker 3: Max on the track. Oscar has shown no fear, none, none, whatsoever.
- 28:08Speaker 3: He will push the limits right back on Max verstaff
- 28:10Speaker 3: and there has been already a penalty incident between the
- 28:13Speaker 3: two with Max going off track against Oscar to try
- 28:16Speaker 3: to maintain the lead and for stap and get in
- 28:19Speaker 3: a five second penalty for overtaking off of the track
- 28:21Speaker 3: and opening the door for Oscar to win a race.
- 28:23Speaker 3: And so it's been fascinating to see that willingness already
- 28:28Speaker 3: at this point of his young career from Oscar to
- 28:31Speaker 3: push the limits, to do what it takes to fight
- 28:33Speaker 3: with Verstappen, and you know, will that continue, Will Max
- 28:36Speaker 3: have counters, Will Lando finally you know, be willing to
- 28:39Speaker 3: do some of those things as well. You know, he
- 28:41Speaker 3: talked about after Miami like he wasn't willing to sort
- 28:44Speaker 3: of risk his entire race and crash with Max, to
- 28:47Speaker 3: give up what at that point was probably just going
- 28:49Speaker 3: to be a P two with the way Oscar had gotten.
- 28:51Speaker 2: Out at front.
- 28:52Speaker 3: At some point you might see Land will be a
- 28:54Speaker 3: bit more willing to get the elbows out as well.
- 28:56Speaker 3: And so I think that's going to be you know,
- 28:57Speaker 3: an interesting dimam to watch over the rest of.
- 28:59Speaker 1: The seas Absolutely Oscar is going to be fascinating to
- 29:02Speaker 1: watch for the rest of this season and to see
- 29:05Speaker 1: where he goes and again looking probably at where where
- 29:09Speaker 1: he is going to be etched in Stone perhaps in
- 29:12Speaker 1: the future in terms of F one history. This season
- 29:15Speaker 1: is gonna give him perhaps a foundation for that. But
- 29:19Speaker 1: moving along here, Mark, after Miami and you being down there,
- 29:23Speaker 1: you wrote on Espanation about how McLaren has really taken
- 29:27Speaker 1: things to the next level from where they were at
- 29:30Speaker 1: coming into the Miami Grand Prix in twenty twenty four
- 29:34Speaker 1: last year to where they are now after this twenty
- 29:39Speaker 1: twenty five Miami Grand Prix. They're no longer the underdogs.
- 29:43Speaker 1: Everyone is basically chasing them at this moment. How and
- 29:48Speaker 1: why do you think we've seen this type of growth
- 29:50Speaker 1: from McLaren as their confidence has certainly been boosted this year.
- 29:55Speaker 1: What are your thoughts here?
- 29:57Speaker 2: I might go for like thirty minutes here.
- 30:02Speaker 3: Story to me and I've basically had a front row
- 30:06Speaker 3: view of I remember, Jeff, my first driver exclusive was
- 30:11Speaker 3: with Lando before askeerby John and twenty three they had
- 30:15Speaker 3: gotten out he and Oscar, they were dead last on
- 30:17Speaker 3: the grid and the season opened and Bob Ray and
- 30:19Speaker 3: Grand Prix like Oscar had to retire for a hydraulics
- 30:23Speaker 3: issue I believe Lando had or you know, he had
- 30:26Speaker 3: an issue with his car. Lando had to pit multiple
- 30:29Speaker 3: times to manage an issue he was having.
- 30:31Speaker 2: They finished dead.
- 30:32Speaker 3: Last, the two of them, and as by John was
- 30:35Speaker 3: early in the year that season and I asked Lando,
- 30:38Speaker 3: you know where they were and he basically said, we're
- 30:40Speaker 3: fighting for points. You know, top ten finishers get points.
- 30:44Speaker 3: He's like, we're fighting for points right now. Forget podiums,
- 30:48Speaker 3: forget wins, We're fighting for points. And twenty three was
- 30:52Speaker 3: the year that you know they you know that read
- 30:56Speaker 3: both sort of run and ran away with things.
- 30:58Speaker 2: But mcclar and.
- 31:00Speaker 3: Started to improve over the course of that season. They
- 31:03Speaker 3: eventually came from the back of the grid to finish fourth,
- 31:07Speaker 3: which was a bit of a surprise. And I interviewed
- 31:12Speaker 3: Zach Brown, their CEO, before the Las Vegas Grand Prix
- 31:15Speaker 3: that year, and I asked him, like, what was leading
- 31:17Speaker 3: to that and he said, faster race guard. Like they
- 31:19Speaker 3: improved the race guard, they improved the team, the management
- 31:23Speaker 3: structure with Andrea Estella as the team principal, and some
- 31:26Speaker 3: of the technological minds around so they could improve that car,
- 31:30Speaker 3: which was that year, the MCL sixty, which was a
- 31:32Speaker 3: nod to their sixtieth year and motorsport, and so the
- 31:36Speaker 3: technological improvements of the car that year certainly helped. But
- 31:40Speaker 3: as Zach told me, and he told me this that year,
- 31:42Speaker 3: they're the best driver duel on the grid. And he
- 31:45Speaker 3: certainly said, look for staffans great and he looked at
- 31:47Speaker 3: you know, George Russell and Lewis Hamilton who worked together
- 31:50Speaker 3: in Mercedes, like, look, they're great too, but these are
- 31:52Speaker 3: two young fast drivers that both want to be world champions.
- 31:57Speaker 3: And this was Oscar's rookie year in twenty three. He said,
- 31:59Speaker 3: what I love about Oscar is a lot of young
- 32:02Speaker 3: drivers get into the first practice session on a Friday,
- 32:05Speaker 3: they try to win the race on Friday, and they
- 32:08Speaker 3: end up making mistakes and it's a downward spiral from
- 32:10Speaker 3: there and they can't get to where they need to
- 32:13Speaker 3: be by the time the lakes go out on Sunday.
- 32:15Speaker 3: Oscar builds it up throughout the weekend where will be
- 32:18Speaker 3: okay and FP one better in FP two. By the
- 32:21Speaker 3: time FP three and qualifying role around, he's where he
- 32:23Speaker 3: needs to be. That maturity from a young driver really
- 32:27Speaker 3: sort of stood out to him, and so that was
- 32:30Speaker 3: twenty three. Then last year they brought that upgrade package
- 32:33Speaker 3: to Miami. Lando wins his first race, he sheds the Lando,
- 32:36Speaker 3: No wins Moniker and suddenly they're off like a rocket.
- 32:39Speaker 3: Had a great year last year, they win the constructor title.
- 32:42Speaker 3: Now let's get to this year. They are now entering
- 32:44Speaker 3: the year favorites. Lando is the preseason drivers champion favorite.
- 32:48Speaker 3: Right now, we've got Oscar in the lead in that fight.
- 32:50Speaker 3: What they've really done this year, Jeff, and it was
- 32:53Speaker 3: a huge talking point in Miami. While every other team
- 32:57Speaker 3: is struggling with their rear tires overheating, theirs aren't, and
- 33:02Speaker 3: people are wondering how they're doing it. Now a couple
- 33:05Speaker 3: of drivers in some heated post race frustration might say,
- 33:08Speaker 3: you know they're cheating, they're doing something wrong. Other team
- 33:11Speaker 3: prints most Christian Horner and Total Wolf, basically saying we
- 33:13Speaker 3: don't know what they're doing, but they've got it absolutely
- 33:16Speaker 3: right and we're got to figure out what they're doing.
- 33:19Speaker 3: Andrea Astella in the McClaren hospitality space after the race
- 33:23Speaker 3: give a ton of credit to his engineers, basically saying, look,
- 33:26Speaker 3: they figured something out here. Obviously not going to say
- 33:28Speaker 3: what it is, but their tires are not overheated. Whereas
- 33:33Speaker 3: you look at Ferrari, you look at Mercedes, you look
- 33:35Speaker 3: at red Bull. You get ten, twelve, thirteen laps into
- 33:39Speaker 3: a stint on a set of tires, their ears are gone.
- 33:41Speaker 3: And Horner Range even said, look, I've got thermal image
- 33:44Speaker 3: and that will show their tires are cooler than everybody else's.
- 33:48Speaker 3: I don't know how they're doing it, but they're doing it.
- 33:51Speaker 3: And so that's been a big part the technological again,
- 33:55Speaker 3: that phrase, it's an engineer in riddle to be solved.
- 33:58Speaker 3: McLean has solved that of the riddle. Now there is
- 34:01Speaker 3: something interesting coming later this month at Barcelona, the Spanish
- 34:05Speaker 3: cron Prix Flexi wings right, the flexible front wing that's
- 34:09Speaker 3: been a big talking point. Last year, there was some
- 34:12Speaker 3: mid season, late season restrictions put in because people noticed
- 34:15Speaker 3: on film that McLaren's wind flaps were expanding a little
- 34:18Speaker 3: bit more, which gave them that sort of mini DRS.
- 34:21Speaker 3: Drag reduction system is an element on this generation's cars
- 34:25Speaker 3: where on certain portions, at certain tracks, you press a
- 34:28Speaker 3: button that rear winge opens up a big flap gives
- 34:30Speaker 3: you more speed. You can only do it if you're
- 34:32Speaker 3: within a second of the car in front of you.
- 34:34Speaker 2: While they were.
- 34:34Speaker 3: Getting what they call the mini DRS effect with that
- 34:38Speaker 3: wind flex and under aerodynamic load opens up a little
- 34:41Speaker 3: bit more of a gap in the wanes, a little
- 34:42Speaker 3: bit less downforce, less drag, more speed on straights. So
- 34:47Speaker 3: the FIA sort of tighten that up a bit, but
- 34:50Speaker 3: they're going to have even more tested on those wings.
- 34:52Speaker 3: Done started out the Spanish ground pre later this month.
- 34:55Speaker 3: People have said red Bull has said that might bring
- 34:58Speaker 3: McLaren a little bit closer back to the field. McLaren
- 35:01Speaker 3: has denied it, said, look, everything's been legal. We're going
- 35:04Speaker 3: to get on Wednesday the post race inspections on Piastre's
- 35:07Speaker 3: car from Miami. Everything's expected to be still legal and
- 35:10Speaker 3: you know, within regulations. But is this just Christian Horner
- 35:15Speaker 3: and company sort of needle and Zach Brown? Is there
- 35:17Speaker 3: something actually to be worried about if you or Claren?
- 35:20Speaker 3: I don't know, but they have come so far over
- 35:24Speaker 3: these past couple of years, and frankly over my coverage
- 35:28Speaker 3: of this sport, it's been fascinating personally to watch because again,
- 35:31Speaker 3: sit down with Lando and Azerbaijan in twenty three and
- 35:34Speaker 3: he's like, we're fighting for points now, we're fighting for
- 35:36Speaker 3: wins now, the fighting titles. They're winning a championship or two,
- 35:40Speaker 3: and so it's been fascinating to watch. They've got two
- 35:42Speaker 3: very fast drivers, but they've also got a lot of
- 35:46Speaker 3: the technological developments right over the past year and a half.
- 35:49Speaker 3: One last thing I'll said, and I told you I
- 35:50Speaker 3: was going to go long here upgrades. We might be
- 35:56Speaker 3: at a tipping point here with upgrades because you know,
- 36:00Speaker 3: to gunther Steiner, former host team principal face of driverters
- 36:03Speaker 3: Survive before this year began, and he said May into
- 36:07Speaker 3: June might be the tipping point for teams turning the
- 36:11Speaker 3: page to twenty six because with the budget cap, with
- 36:15Speaker 3: the cost cap, with the idea that you could get
- 36:17Speaker 3: ahead of the field started next year with the new regulations,
- 36:21Speaker 3: teams that aren't in the title fight may wave their
- 36:24Speaker 3: hands and say, you know what, we're trying to improve
- 36:26Speaker 3: this car. We're moving to next year. Some teams I
- 36:29Speaker 3: think have already done that. I mentioned Aston Martin, Fernando
- 36:32Speaker 3: Alonso has basically said, look, Adrian Newey is focused on
- 36:34Speaker 3: next year. Carlos Signs was so excited being three tenths
- 36:38Speaker 3: off of pole position in Miami, but as he told
- 36:40Speaker 3: us after qualifying, our team is focused on twenty six
- 36:43Speaker 3: like they're probably not going to do too much more
- 36:45Speaker 3: to improve this year's car. Red Bull if Verstapa is
- 36:49Speaker 3: still in the fight might bring some more improvements, but
- 36:52Speaker 3: we might get to a point where the rest of
- 36:55Speaker 3: the gridg just decides they're so far ahead. Right now,
- 36:58Speaker 3: we're turning the page to twenty six and maybe when
- 37:00Speaker 3: all is said and done, we do this show in December.
- 37:03Speaker 3: We're talking about a dominant season from McLaren from Piastrionoris,
- 37:08Speaker 3: similar to what we saw from for Staffid and Red
- 37:10Speaker 3: Bull in twenty three.
- 37:11Speaker 1: It's so interesting as to where this sport is going.
- 37:15Speaker 1: It really is so very interesting. And Mark, Buddy, before
- 37:19Speaker 1: I let you go, I'd be remiss if if we
- 37:21Speaker 1: didn't talk about any under the radar athletes here that
- 37:25Speaker 1: we should really be keeping our eyes on. I always
- 37:28Speaker 1: ask our guests just about on every podcast, as our
- 37:31Speaker 1: listeners will know about under the radar athletes we really
- 37:34Speaker 1: need to keep our eyes on, and I'm gonna ask
- 37:36Speaker 1: you the same here in terms of F one drivers,
- 37:39Speaker 1: in terms of any storylines that you have been following
- 37:42Speaker 1: behind the scenes, are there any athletes, some F one
- 37:46Speaker 1: drivers that we really should be looking at that you
- 37:49Speaker 1: would deem under the radar here for this twenty twenty
- 37:52Speaker 1: five season.
- 37:54Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean, I think the first one.
- 37:56Speaker 3: And I don't know if he's really under the radar
- 37:57Speaker 3: for most sort of F one fans, but for the
- 37:59Speaker 3: more sort of casual or newer fans.
- 38:02Speaker 2: Keimi Antonelli at Mercedes like you're talking about.
- 38:05Speaker 3: An eighteen year old, Yeah, I mean, I coach a
- 38:09Speaker 3: sixteen you travel baseball team, you know, and I was
- 38:12Speaker 3: down in Miami. I missed their tournament, but I was
- 38:14Speaker 3: back in practice this week. We had a game last night,
- 38:17Speaker 3: and I'm looking at kids that are just a few
- 38:19Speaker 3: years removed from Kimi Antonelli, who qualified on pole for
- 38:23Speaker 3: the F one Spurt race in Miami, who stepped into
- 38:26Speaker 3: a seat vacated by Lewis Hamilton, who is still studying
- 38:30Speaker 3: for his school finals as this is happening. It's mind blowing.
- 38:35Speaker 3: It's absolutely mind blowing what he's accomplished already in the sport.
- 38:39Speaker 3: But this year we saw a lot of new drivers
- 38:41Speaker 3: on the grid, right you know, you had you know,
- 38:45Speaker 3: Antonelli joining Mercedes. You had Oliver Berman, you know, stepping
- 38:49Speaker 3: in a hoss. He had driven for Ferrari as a
- 38:51Speaker 3: reserve and hass Is a reserve. Last year, you know,
- 38:53Speaker 3: Gabrielle Bordoletto, you know, coming over the F two champion
- 38:57Speaker 3: from last year. You know he's driving for Salvary. They
- 38:58Speaker 3: become OUTI next year you had Jack dun who started
- 39:01Speaker 3: the year at Alpine. Now you've got Franco Colopinto, who
- 39:04Speaker 3: drove for Williams last year in a sub rule when
- 39:06Speaker 3: they benched Logan Sargant did a great job for them.
- 39:09Speaker 3: Now he's getting another shot of the Alpine. Isaac Cajar,
- 39:12Speaker 3: who's going to be my next name on this list.
- 39:15Speaker 3: I mean qualified eleventh for Miami, finished eleventh in Miami,
- 39:20Speaker 3: so just outside the points, just outside the top ten,
- 39:23Speaker 3: and just the desire for from him to win. Like
- 39:29Speaker 3: you could have told me in talking to him after
- 39:31Speaker 3: both of those P elevens that he had finished that
- 39:33Speaker 3: last I would have believed it because he was that upset,
- 39:36Speaker 3: like mad, frustrated, disappointed, like all of the above.
- 39:40Speaker 2: I think he's going to be special.
- 39:41Speaker 3: And you know, if this is the first year hearing
- 39:43Speaker 3: the name Isaac Cajar, Google twenty four F two Monaco Hajar,
- 39:48Speaker 3: you will see one of the most incredible moves in
- 39:50Speaker 3: all of motorsport. I've ever seen the Monaco Grand Prix.
- 39:53Speaker 3: There's a tunnel, all right, It's historic racetrack, one of
- 39:56Speaker 3: the most glamorous races, part of the Triple Crown of Racing,
- 40:00Speaker 3: one of the F two events. A car slowed along
- 40:03Speaker 3: the right side in that tunnel along a curve, Hajar
- 40:06Speaker 3: comes up on him around a blind turn at like
- 40:09Speaker 3: two hundred miles an hour in a good second is
- 40:11Speaker 3: able to avoid a collision. And it shows you the
- 40:14Speaker 3: reflexes these men and women have in these cars, and
- 40:18Speaker 3: so Hagar and Antonelli certainly stand out to me. One
- 40:21Speaker 3: name I'll throw out there, Remember I mentioned it earlier.
- 40:24Speaker 3: Cadillac has joined the grid as the eleventh team. They
- 40:27Speaker 3: wanted to be from when they first announced it at
- 40:30Speaker 3: the start of the twenty three calendar year. They wanted
- 40:32Speaker 3: to be an all American team. Right, Colton heard it?
- 40:36Speaker 3: Who drives for Andretti? Who's Andretti is part of this
- 40:39Speaker 3: Cadillac team? Drives for Andretti in IndyCar. He has been
- 40:42Speaker 3: a name linked with a move to F one for years.
- 40:45Speaker 3: He was linked with Red Bull, but there was an
- 40:47Speaker 3: issue where he didn't have enough points for his super license.
- 40:51Speaker 3: He might be one of the next F one drivers
- 40:53Speaker 3: on the grid, and so he might be somebody to
- 40:55Speaker 3: keep an eye on. If not him, another name and
- 40:58Speaker 3: I interviewed him recently, Padolo Wark for Aero McLaren. One
- 41:01Speaker 3: of the most dynamic engagement personalities in all of motorsport
- 41:04Speaker 3: right now. He's also been linked with a move to
- 41:06Speaker 3: the F one grid. You know, Cadillac said, look, we
- 41:10Speaker 3: want an all American team. He's Mexican. That could be
- 41:13Speaker 3: an all and North American team as well. So Herd
- 41:16Speaker 3: an old Ward are two names outside F one right
- 41:18Speaker 3: now that people should keep an eye on.
- 41:20Speaker 1: Again, folks, he's Mark Schofield from ESP Nation. Head on
- 41:23Speaker 1: over to esp nation dot com and search out all
- 41:26Speaker 1: the F one articles and content that sp nation has.
- 41:30Speaker 1: You're gonna find Mark over there. Buddy. It was great
- 41:32Speaker 1: talking to you. Thank you so much for joining us

- 41:45Speaker 3: little bit F one. As you can tell, you know,
- 41:48Speaker 3: I love talking to NFL. I love talking quarterbacks like,
- 41:50Speaker 3: but I kind of like talking f one too.
- 41:52Speaker 1: Absolutely, and we will have you on again, my friend
