Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: Now we're going to hear from someone who felt that
- 0:02Speaker 1: impact of Dolly Parton passing. Joining me now is Canadian
- 0:05Speaker 1: singer Brett Kissel. Brett, I was watching your video that
- 0:09Speaker 1: you posted on Instagram. I teared up. I know you
- 0:11Speaker 1: were as well as you were singing Dolly Parton's I
- 0:14Speaker 1: Will Always Love You. How are you holding up now?
- 0:19Speaker 2: It's interesting. I'm even listening to all of the amazing tributes.
- 0:23Speaker 2: I'm feeling the emotion today. I'm on my family farm.
- 0:28Speaker 2: I I love country music with all my heart. And
- 0:32Speaker 2: country music will never be the same, you know, now
- 0:35Speaker 2: that Dolly Parton's gone. And it's so crazy, you know,
- 0:38Speaker 2: how here I am on a farm in the middle
- 0:39Speaker 2: of nowhere, Alberta, but her music reached me. And I
- 0:43Speaker 2: feel we had a lot of connection, you know, her
- 0:45Speaker 2: family and her mother got her a guitar when she
- 0:47Speaker 2: was seven years old. My meemaw got me a guitar
- 0:49Speaker 2: when I was seven years old. So country music will
- 0:52Speaker 2: never be the same now that she's gone. Yeah.
- 0:55Speaker 1: I mean, she did. Well, she did so much for
- 0:56Speaker 1: country music. It's not even it's hard to put it,
- 0:59Speaker 1: I think, into words. And of course, her reach went
- 1:02Speaker 1: so far beyond country music. I know you never actually
- 1:06Speaker 1: met her and I can see the emotion in your eyes.
- 1:09Speaker 1: I don't want to make you more emotional, but I
- 1:11Speaker 1: do want to play a voice message that Dolly left
- 1:14Speaker 1: for you herself. And this was after you had won
- 1:17Speaker 1: some some pretty big awards in your life. So let's
- 1:19Speaker 1: just play that. Hey, Brett, this is Dolly Parton. I
- 1:23Speaker 1: wanted to congratulate you on winning all those country music awards. Well,
- 1:28Speaker 1: you deserve it. You're the best. Love you, Dolly. I mean,
- 1:32Speaker 1: I can only imagine if you're a country music artist
- 1:36Speaker 1: what a message like that from Dolly Parton must mean.
- 1:39Speaker 1: But you tell us.
- 1:41Speaker 2: You know, my dear friend Jackie Ray, who's in the
- 1:44Speaker 2: Canadian Country Music Hall of Fame, she's a legend in
- 1:46Speaker 2: radio broadcasting. She did a very special interview, and she
- 1:50Speaker 2: allowed me the opportunity to do an interview for a
- 1:52Speaker 2: Christmas special with Dolly Parton as well. It was a
- 1:56Speaker 2: big night at the Canadian Country Music Awards. Of course,
- 1:58Speaker 2: the Canadian Country Music Awards are coming up here in
- 2:00Speaker 2: just a couple of days. And Dolly got my phone
- 2:03Speaker 2: number from Jackie Ray. And I was on the farm
- 2:06Speaker 2: here with my grandparents, and I got an unknown name,
- 2:09Speaker 2: unknown number. So... I'm not going to answer it. So
- 2:12Speaker 2: I just press click and I moved on. I kept
- 2:14Speaker 2: chasing cows with my grandpa. And then about an hour later,
- 2:17Speaker 2: I checked and I said, oh, my God, you'll never
- 2:19Speaker 2: believe it. Dolly Parton just called me. That was one
- 2:22Speaker 2: of the best moments of my life and one of
- 2:24Speaker 2: the best moments of my career. And it just goes
- 2:26Speaker 2: to show how much she cares about the industry, how
- 2:29Speaker 2: much she cares about others and other people who are
- 2:32Speaker 2: doing well in the business. She didn't have to do that.
- 2:35Speaker 2: But that little 15 second voicemail is something that I'm
- 2:38Speaker 2: going to cherish for the rest of my life.
- 2:40Speaker 1: I mean, I'm sorry that you didn't answer the phone,
- 2:42Speaker 1: but I'm so glad that you have that recording just
- 2:44Speaker 1: for yourself. And can I just ask you, your grandparents
- 2:47Speaker 1: were with you. I mean, I can see what it
- 2:49Speaker 1: meant to you, but what did that moment mean to
- 2:51Speaker 1: your family?
- 2:54Speaker 2: You know what? I think I can speak for my
- 2:56Speaker 2: grandparents and everybody involved in my family and my kids.
- 3:00Speaker 2: We sing Dolly Parton songs all the time. We're so
- 3:02Speaker 2: grateful that she paved the way for somebody like me
- 3:06Speaker 2: and so many others. You look at all the incredible
- 3:09Speaker 2: Canadian female artists that we've got that are crushing it
- 3:11Speaker 2: in Nashville. They couldn't do that if Dolly Parton didn't
- 3:14Speaker 2: pave the way. You look at every artist in every
- 3:17Speaker 2: genre in show business. She was so powerful. proud of
- 3:20Speaker 2: being one of the pillars of show business. None of
- 3:23Speaker 2: us would have a career if Dolly didn't go in
- 3:25Speaker 2: and bust down the door. And she did it in
- 3:28Speaker 2: the most amazing way. There will never be another Dolly.
- 3:31Speaker 2: She did it better than everybody else. And it's just
- 3:34Speaker 2: a sad day, not just for country music, but for
- 3:36Speaker 2: all the show business today.
- 3:38Speaker 1: You know, yeah. And so, like I say, and you've
- 3:41Speaker 1: illustrated so nicely the effect that she's had on country
- 3:44Speaker 1: music artists. And like I say, that her reach went
- 3:48Speaker 1: so far beyond the music industry. I mean, she was
- 3:51Speaker 1: renowned for her philanthropy. Some of it she did quietly.
- 3:54Speaker 1: Some of it she made known. I mean, I hope
- 3:57Speaker 1: there will be another Dolly Parton to some degree.
- 4:03Speaker 2: I hope so to some degree. And I think Dolly
- 4:05Speaker 2: lives on in all of us because of her charitable
- 4:08Speaker 2: work and her philanthropic work. She never said that it
- 4:10Speaker 2: was an obligation. She always said that charity was an opportunity.
- 4:13Speaker 2: And my dear friend Brett Wilson and I, we've said that.
- 4:15Speaker 2: We do a lot of charity work together. We're up
- 4:17Speaker 2: for the Humanitarian of the Year Award this year at
- 4:19Speaker 2: the Canadian Country Music Association. And I know that one
- 4:22Speaker 2: of the big reasons why we want to give back
- 4:24Speaker 2: is because we watched Dolly do it for so many years.
- 4:26Speaker 2: There is an amazing quote I heard about Elvis Presley
- 4:29Speaker 2: when I was in Graceland for the first time. And
- 4:31Speaker 2: I'm going to use it to share about Dolly Parton today.
- 4:34Speaker 2: And it's before anybody did anything, Dolly did everything. And
- 4:40Speaker 2: there's just nobody like her.
- 4:41Speaker 1: I love that quote. That really does sum it up.
- 4:45Speaker 1: In terms of her legacy, I mean, what do you
- 4:49Speaker 1: hope it's going to be?
- 4:52Speaker 2: Well, it's it's going to be unmatched. That's that's for sure.
- 4:56Speaker 2: You look at all the incredible artists across any genre,
- 4:59Speaker 2: you know, have ever played music. But she's got a
- 5:01Speaker 2: spot in this sacred ground like Shakespeare has, like like
- 5:07Speaker 2: Gordie Howe and Wayne Gretzky have to hockey. You know what?
- 5:11Speaker 2: Dolly Parton is just an incredible gift to music. And Steve,
- 5:15Speaker 2: one of your other contributors that was just on TV
- 5:17Speaker 2: a couple moments ago, when he talked about those songs,
- 5:20Speaker 2: Dolly said that she wasn't just a storyteller. She wasn't
- 5:24Speaker 2: just a songwriter. Dolly called herself a song teller. And
- 5:28Speaker 2: it was really, really special to get to watch her
- 5:30Speaker 2: in action, which I got the fortunate privilege of being
- 5:33Speaker 2: able to watch her at the CMA Awards in Nashville
- 5:36Speaker 2: and also get to see her at the Grand Ole Opry.
- 5:39Speaker 2: And I know that the Grand Ole Opry... It's going
- 5:41Speaker 2: to be very, very sad today in Nashville because they
- 5:44Speaker 2: lost the legend. But I just read on the ticker
- 5:47Speaker 2: right here on the TV beside me as my meme
- 5:49Speaker 2: on my grandpa barrel watching that the United States are
- 5:53Speaker 2: putting their flags at half mass for the for the
- 5:57Speaker 2: icon Dolly Parton. I think that that is just the
- 5:58Speaker 2: most special thing and the most incredible legacy. You know,
- 6:01Speaker 2: you've done something when the whole country is mourning.
- 6:05Speaker 1: I think there's people around the world, right? Here we
- 6:08Speaker 1: are in Canada talking about it. And to that end, Brett,
- 6:10Speaker 1: I know it's not easy when you're feeling the emotions
- 6:12Speaker 1: to talk about them on national television. And I just
- 6:15Speaker 1: really do appreciate you taking the time because it's allowed
- 6:18Speaker 1: everyone to see it from your perspective and share in
- 6:21Speaker 1: those emotions with you. So thank you very much, Canadian
- 6:24Speaker 1: country singer Brett Kissel.
- 6:25Speaker 2: Thank you, Sarah. Thank you.
