- 0:01The right to offend is not some pesky little part of freedom of
- 0:05speech that we have to put up with.
- 0:07It is the heart and soul and lungs of freedom of speech.
- 0:11It is the coursing lifeblood of human process.
- 0:14It is the instigator of liberty and modernity and science and
- 0:18understanding. What a laughingstock today's
- 0:22student leaders are that they can so casually dismiss the
- 0:26right to be offensive without realizing that their lovely,
- 0:30enlightened lives are the gifts of individuals who gave offence.
- 0:36Offensiveness is not just something we have to
- 0:38begrudgingly accept. Offensiveness is the motor of
- 0:42human progress. Now broadcasting from the Right
- 0:46to Offend media studios in sunny South Florida, bringing you the
- 0:51latest in politics, current events, art and pop culture.
- 0:55This is the Whitfield Report live with Sam Whitfield.
- 1:00But giving offense is good. In fact, it's essential.
- 1:10Well, hello there everyone, and welcome to Monday's edition of
- 1:15the Whitfield Report. I am host Sam Whitfield
- 1:18recording here at Right to Friend Media Studios and may the
- 1:24fourth be with you all. It is that day of the year, but
- 1:30today we'll be doing something a little different from what we
- 1:34usually do for the Monday show. Usually I have a guest or an
- 1:39interview, but I actually am going to jump on the trip on the
- 1:44YouTube trending train right now reviewing the Michael Jackson
- 1:49biopic titled Michael, which I saw over the weekend.
- 1:56I actually saw it yesterday with my folks and I have some
- 1:59thoughts because if there was a movie that had like a bigger,
- 2:07you know, this movie has a giant chasm between what the critics
- 2:14think and what the audience thinks.
- 2:17This movie is currently sitting at like a 38% Run Tomatoes
- 2:24review the last time I checked it.
- 2:27The rating and the audience critic score seems to be around
- 2:3397%, which is a staggering disparity.
- 2:38And I have a few, you know, theories as to why that is.
- 2:44So this disparity, initially, I wasn't going to go see, you
- 2:48know, this movie in theaters. I was going to wait until it
- 2:52came out on, you know, streaming or, you know, Blu-ray or
- 2:59whatever and then see it then. But the audience versus critic
- 3:07disparity, really, it almost fascinated me to be honest.
- 3:13And so I looked at some of the, you know, early critical reviews
- 3:21of it to see what they were saying.
- 3:23And then I kind of wanted to go see it myself just, you know, to
- 3:26make up my own opinions. So overall, I thought the film
- 3:30was really well done. The most consistent critique
- 3:34that I saw from like Variety in Hollywood Reporter and all these
- 3:40other, you know, Hollywood movie trade outlets, so to speak, is
- 3:47that the movie had no substance, right?
- 3:51They said that this was a giant MTV.
- 3:54And to that, I would have to say we're we've been watching the
- 3:57same movie because yes, I will say that this movie did a
- 4:04fantastic job of the choreography for all of the
- 4:11music videos that they did show being shot.
- 4:16They did a great job in this movie of basically like a shot
- 4:22for shot, you know, recreation of, you know, the throne music
- 4:27video off the wall. Some of the stuff regarding that
- 4:31they, they did a shot for shot remake basically of Michael
- 4:37Jackson's Billie Jean performance at the Motown 25
- 4:42performance in 82. Because I, I recently watched
- 4:49that performance that was on that was televised back in the
- 4:5480s. And then I saw this movie and it
- 4:58was it was a one for one shot basically like everything from
- 5:05the video, you know, in Michael's performance.
- 5:12And then basically the audience reaction was basically a shot
- 5:16for shot take. So the filmography was great,
- 5:20the cinematography was great and the music was great.
- 5:23I'll get into Jafar Jackson's performance here in a little bit
- 5:28because I really do think it is worth noting.
- 5:31He did a fantastic job overall. But I also want to address this
- 5:36claim that the movie had no substance and it was just a
- 5:40flashy, you know, MTV fanservice movie because this very much has
- 5:46substance. I thought it showed Michael's
- 5:50beginning with the Jackson 5. It showed his tumultuous
- 5:59relationship with his father, Joseph Jackson.
- 6:05They kind of painted Joe to be somewhat of, I guess the the of
- 6:13this movie to a certain extent. I wouldn't say cartoonishly.
- 6:18He wasn't like cartoonishly evil or anything, but he was just
- 6:21depicted as being very selfish, which depending on who you talk
- 6:26to, Michael Jackson during his lifetime in various interviews
- 6:31said his father could be selfish and could be abusive.
- 6:35I believe Janet Jackson said much the thing the same thing in
- 6:41interviews. Other of his siblings said that
- 6:44dad, you know, wasn't that abusive or anything like that.
- 6:48So, you know, again, there's disparity and there also, of
- 6:55course, may have been some, you know, Hollywood creativity
- 7:00regarding, you know, the movie. But overall, I thought, you
- 7:05know, that they handled the Michael and Joe, our
- 7:10relationship real well. And then they also really
- 7:13showcased the relationship between Michael Jackson and his
- 7:18mother. And you can clearly see that
- 7:22Michael's personality and his overall demeanor, he really got
- 7:29that from his mother. And you know, they, they showed,
- 7:33they showed the relationship with his brothers a little bit.
- 7:37You would kind of get the impression that outside of the
- 7:41performing that they weren't really that close.
- 7:44Not that they were really antagonistic, but just outside
- 7:48of the music vision business, they really didn't spend that
- 7:52much time together, especially once they were grown, which, you
- 7:57know, that happens among siblings as you get older.
- 8:04So, you know, Hollywood versus reality.
- 8:08I suppose that's one of the things that you'll have to
- 8:11decide for yourself if you do see the move, Jafar.
- 8:15Now let's get you Jafar Jackson because this was his first movie
- 8:20that I'm aware of. This was his on screen debut.
- 8:25That's Michael's nephew and I believe that's Jermaine
- 8:29Jackson's son if I read correctly, and he really knocked
- 8:36out of the park. He literally looks and sounds
- 8:42like Michael on screen. And from what I understand, he
- 8:47did a lot of the singing himself on the tracks.
- 8:53They they did dub in some of Michael's original tracking for
- 9:00some of the, you know, like live performances.
- 9:05And that was fairly apparent, you know, in a few spots.
- 9:10But hey, why, you know, why have Jafar seeing those parts
- 9:18entirely when you can just, you know, track have the original as
- 9:23part of the soundtrack, But in the parts that you did sing, he
- 9:28really knocked it out out of the park.
- 9:30You could have blindfolded me and I would have thought that
- 9:33was Michael Jackson singing. And they also really showed
- 9:40Michael's creative process. You know, how he wrote songs,
- 9:44how I was always thinking musically and whatnot.
- 9:48So I, I really don't get this notion that the critics have
- 9:53that this movie was lacking in substance because it seemed very
- 9:59substantive. And Roy showed Mike was
- 10:03introspective and a deep thinker and also the fact that he was a
- 10:10very caring person and very caring towards children,
- 10:16particularly those with, you know, chronic illness and, you
- 10:23know, turn on childhood cancer. Not to spoil the movie too much,
- 10:28but they showed Michael, you know, visiting sick children in
- 10:34hospitals, which is, you know, reportedly something that he
- 10:38actually did a lot in his, you know, life.
- 10:43And he never wanted, you know, that as like a photo op session
- 10:48or anything like that. He just did that in private.
- 10:52At least that's how it was depicted, you know, in the
- 10:55movie. Now, one of the things that this
- 10:58movie, The critics are being really critical on that I think
- 11:06is really almost dumb. The critics are complaining that
- 11:12none of the controversies Michael in Michael Jackson's
- 11:17life are covered in this movie. And I think that that's a really
- 11:23dumb thing to criticize this movie in particular for, because
- 11:31this movie is Part 1 of Part 2, which we'll get to here towards
- 11:38the end of the review. But the critics want to you kind
- 11:42of lampoon this movie and criticize it for not covering
- 11:48the controversies in Michael Jackson's life, specifically
- 11:51with the allegations against him.
- 11:55And that really wouldn't work in this movie because this movie
- 12:02covers Michael's Jackson 5 era up through the bad era, 1987.
- 12:12So there are about 25 years covered here going from the 60s
- 12:20to the late 80s. And the allegations weren't
- 12:26really around until the 90s. So there's no reason in this
- 12:32film to cover any of those controverse virtual things to
- 12:38begin with. Second of all was this movie in
- 12:43the kind of the tone that that they went for here was mostly
- 12:48all about Michael's, you know, performances and his creative
- 12:53process and how he thought of music and what his musical
- 13:04vision was. So because of that, there was
- 13:10really no reason to dive into those controversial moments.
- 13:17It wouldn't have added anything to the story.
- 13:20I thought this was really a celebration of Michael as an
- 13:25artist and as a performance. So it really wasn't needed here.
- 13:34In all honesty. I think it would have detracted
- 13:38from some things. And in fact, I guess that that
- 13:43was one of the movie. That was one of the reasons why
- 13:46this movie has been split into parts.
- 13:49This was a Part 1. And then I guess sometime next
- 13:57year in 2027, we'll be getting Part 2, which will focus on his
- 14:03later career in life, which may cover, you know, more of those
- 14:08controversies and what not, and some of his relationships with
- 14:13Lisa Marie Presley and things like that.
- 14:16But overall, I, I thought that this movie was a slam dunk.
- 14:22It's a feel good movie and the and this just goes to show that
- 14:29professional movie critics and the movie trades like The
- 14:33Hollywood Reporter and Variety are more or less useless and out
- 14:38of touch and that they've been out of touch.
- 14:40Of course, we we've known that for, you know, the past decade
- 14:44plus. These are, you know, the same
- 14:47people who will who will raise a movie like cuties on Netflix.
- 14:53And yet, you know, I'm bathed Michael movie because it didn't
- 14:57cover his, you know, pedophilia accurizations enough, which by
- 15:03the way, razor fist has a great video kind of debunking all of
- 15:11that and kind of all the, you know, hubbub surrounding that.
- 15:17And I'm he actually did a whole video series on it that is worth
- 15:23watching. He also did a Michael Jackson
- 15:27retrospective on the discography, which I thought was
- 15:32real done. I'm not going to go play the
- 15:36entirety of that video, but I did want to play for you guys at
- 15:41least some of razor fist initial rant against media and some of
- 15:47the you know, allegations that they foisted upon Michael
- 15:52Jackson. It was from about like 10 years
- 15:56ago now, but I think it's, you know, worth watching.
- 15:59And again, this is a shortened version of kind of Razor fist
- 16:05debunking of the Michael Jackson Neverland documentary that came
- 16:09out in 2014. But Even so, I thought that this
- 16:15was kind of well worth watching to kind of address those
- 16:20allegations that the media is upset that this movie doesn't
- 16:25address. So let's see.
- 16:28Cut #2 All right. So I think regarding the, I
- 16:33think regarding the controversy, that kind of sums up, you know,
- 16:39everything that I need to know about, you know, what happened.
- 16:43And the man is dead to Michael Jackson, unfortunately, so he
- 16:51can't even defend himself from these accusations anymore.
- 16:56And that Fighting Neverland documentary also has been
- 17:01debunked more or less by his family.
- 17:03And that came out in 2014, well after his death in 2009.
- 17:09So again, you know, the media what loves to go after people
- 17:15who aren't around to defend themselves anymore, just like
- 17:20they did with, you know, let me from Motörhead and also Hugh
- 17:26Hefner and other people. But yet they won't go after
- 17:31Roman Polanski. The only one that they kind of
- 17:37went after after being forced to is Harvey Weinstein after the
- 17:42allegations were so, you know, overwhelming.
- 17:45But aside from that, you know, aside from the lack of, you
- 17:51know, coverage of the controversial, let me put it
- 17:54this way. I'm glad that they didn't focus
- 17:57on the controversy at all for this movie because like I said,
- 18:02I don't think it would have added anything to this movie.
- 18:06I think it would have been a distraction.
- 18:08And yeah, the critics can complain that, oh, this movie
- 18:11was just fan service for the fans.
- 18:15Well, isn't that what a biopic of, you know, an artist is
- 18:22supposed to be? I mean, we, we got that 10 years
- 18:27ago with the Freddie Mercury biopic.
- 18:30We got that with an Elton John, you know, biopic, which I saw on
- 18:35the scene. But I've heard that's good too,
- 18:38that The Rocket Man biopic. They even did that with, you
- 18:42know, Elvis too. So why is they never covered
- 18:46any, you know, converses with those figures?
- 18:51So why then is the media fixated that they didn't focus on any of
- 18:56the controversies with Michael Jackson for this movie?
- 19:00I don't understand. But again, this goes to show how
- 19:07there's just no overwhelming disparity between what critics
- 19:11think and what actual audiences think.
- 19:15So, you know, in conclusion, I would definitely recommend
- 19:20seeing this movie and seeing in theaters if you can,
- 19:23particularly because hearing, you know, the the movie
- 19:27soundtrack and Michael's songs, you know, with theatrical
- 19:32speakers, like that's the best, you know, way to experience this
- 19:38movie. I, I think I'm not one of these
- 19:41people who thinks that every movie needs to be experienced in
- 19:44some grand movie theater, but this one definitely is because I
- 19:50think the, you know, performance and I think the cinematography
- 19:54and, and the soundscape really deserves to be experienced in
- 20:00theater. So that's my review of the
- 20:04Michael Jackson biopic, Michael Part 1.
- 20:07I thoroughly enjoyed it. Again, I thought Jafar Jackson
- 20:12did a really good job portraying his uncle.
- 20:18And overall, I'm, you know, I have no complaints regarding
- 20:23this film and I recommend people see it.
- 20:28Now, supposedly Part 2 is in production, which will focus on
- 20:34Michael's later life and kind of the time leading up to his
- 20:38death. But that's all we know pretty
- 20:41much at this point. There's really no information
- 20:46out there regarding this movie other than it's in production
- 20:52and we should be seeing it sometime next year.
- 20:56So that just about does for today's episode.
- 21:00Again, I would highly recommend it.
- 21:02Probably going to be my film of the year, at least so far.
- 21:09You know we have, we have a few other movies like The Avengers
- 21:12coming out this year and I think we have a think we have a Star
- 21:15Wars movie coming out, but I could be mistaken on as well.
- 21:20Anyway, hope everyone has a great Monday again, may the
- 21:25fourth be with you all and I will see you back here Wednesday
- 21:29night with Max and Morpheus for the live show at 9:00 PM
- 21:35Eastern. Thanks everyone for tuning in
- 21:38and I will talk with you all down the road.
