- 0:00New Year, The Survivor's Guide to 2026.
- 0:05This episode we've got a practical, spiritual, and mildly
- 0:08irreverent field manual for getting through the year with
- 0:11your soul intact and your dignity mostly undamaged.
- 0:16Welcome to Mark and Pete, 2 blokes with half an opinion.
- 0:21Now here's our first thought. Say goodbye to 2025 when the
- 0:27calendar had conflicts. Look and learn how to survive in
- 0:322026 as the new year does eventually arrive.
- 0:36Just stay at home and never intermix.
- 0:39The nation may eventually revive and avoid all politics.
- 0:43Months will then go into OverDrive, so remember, there's
- 0:47no easy fix. Pretend it's 2027 to stay alive
- 0:52as your mortal time ticks. Yes.
- 0:55A simple guide to surviving the new year.
- 0:59Well, it's a great time. A celebration, a new year.
- 1:03Mr. Pete, I ask you what? Is your.
- 1:06Techniques and really guide to our listeners on how to survive
- 1:11for the new year. Well, specific things for
- 1:14getting through this New Year period.
- 1:16I think in this particularly helpful guide, I can just lead a
- 1:21few people too. I mean, this is taken obviously
- 1:24from the book of Proverbs, the Apocryphal Pete edition, which
- 1:29has some really, and I mean these are essential and I can't
- 1:35emphasis to this in most enough, absolutely essential, stupid new
- 1:39new year suggestions. So yes, one thing I would say is
- 1:45every new year, to get through this period, particularly on
- 1:49late New Year's Eve going to New Year, you must this is this.
- 1:53I think you'd agree with this Mark, You must sing old land
- 1:56Zine with absolute confidence, but with no knowledge at all of
- 2:02the actual words. I mean, another thing that
- 2:08another thing that I think is essential, especially if you're
- 2:10in a a reasonably large gathering, is to hold your drink
- 2:14aloft and say with the utmost seriousness, this is my year.
- 2:20Just as the, just as you're going into 2026, this is my
- 2:24year. But make sure that you do with
- 2:26absolute conviction and people will think you're a complete
- 2:30idiot, which is a good way to start the year because you can
- 2:34only go up from there. That's true.
- 2:37But here's another tip that I would suggest.
- 2:39If you're going to have a New Year celebration, I would
- 2:42suggest having it in a neighbour's house, whether they
- 2:44like it or not, because at least all the mess you see, you don't
- 2:48have to clean that up afterwards and you never know what might
- 2:51happen. But I would always suggest that
- 2:54always sort of approach people as though, you know, everyone,
- 2:57even though you probably have never met them before.
- 3:00And, you know, with the bombings, of course, you know,
- 3:02with Big Ben sort of chimes in the new year, always add 13.
- 3:08Don't go just 12. Yeah, it's always a it's always
- 3:10a good idea. Yes.
- 3:12I mean, here's the other thing. And this is one thing I would
- 3:15also suggest is, is that when you do get into the the bombing
- 3:19afterwards is just remind them that the new year has not
- 3:23actually started. The point being is, is of
- 3:26course, as we all know, it's the fire horse, yes, the Chinese New
- 3:30Year, well, that doesn't start until February.
- 3:33So I think it's always important to just remind people of that
- 3:36point, yes. Yes, the Chinese New Year, the
- 3:41which is also their Spring Festival.
- 3:43I think, I think I might it's it's the same sort of same basic
- 3:47celebration, interesting time that because everyone else has
- 3:52got it over with and they're still starting their new year,
- 3:55but it gives time for another celebration.
- 3:57And yeah, there tends to be more Dragons involved than in our
- 4:03celebrations. But, you know, that's not
- 4:05necessarily a bad thing. Yeah.
- 4:08New year can seem like a difficult, stressful time
- 4:10because it reminds you that another year has gone by and you
- 4:16haven't achieved your life goals and you're not the sort of
- 4:19person you hoped you would be when you were younger.
- 4:22And you have to deal with that realization that there's less
- 4:27and less time left for you to actually achieve something in
- 4:30your life. So you, you, you can then then I
- 4:34mean, obviously as a responsible podcast, we would then say make
- 4:39sure that with them. And that realization hits you
- 4:43once again, again, as it heads towards midnight.
- 4:47Basically drink too much and say embarrassing things to someone
- 4:51you don't really know very well, but definitely dislike.
- 4:55That's that's the way to do it. This is all part of this
- 4:58handbook that well. I go by helping.
- 5:01People through this, Yeah. Yeah, Well, that's what I've
- 5:03always done. And well, here's the other thing
- 5:06is it's of course added to the praise.
- 5:08Different kinds of things. Yes.
- 5:11And of course, now here's the Americans, because since 19 O 7
- 5:15and, and I don't mean 7 minutes past seven.
- 5:18What I'm saying is in the year 19 O 7, New York City's Times
- 5:22squares hosted it's iconic ball drop.
- 5:26Yes, this is inspired by naval time balls when glittering
- 5:29sphere descends on 141 feet at midnight.
- 5:34Now I thought, well, why can't they do something slightly
- 5:36different? Why does it have to be a ball
- 5:40drop? Why?
- 5:41Can it be something else? Well, what I think is that what
- 5:46I've noticed is with looking at the political situation in
- 5:49Britain, the Americans might do a ball drop, but we do a balls
- 5:52up practically. Exactly.
- 5:55So, you know, balls in things up All year is our contribution to
- 5:58world culture, starting with the New Year celebration.
- 6:01The Philippines have got a new sort of very As we go around the
- 6:06world, the Philippines have a New Years celebration.
- 6:10It's all about circles, meaning symbolising coins and
- 6:14prosperities. Whereas yes, Britain is just
- 6:16going around in circles, so absolutely nowhere.
- 6:22Now here's the other thing, which is in Italy right now.
- 6:26Have a guess what they do? Yes, Italians genuinely believe
- 6:30that wearing red underwear on New Year's Eve brings good luck,
- 6:34whereas we're Britain is always in the red.
- 6:37So they, the Mexicans, as we all know, like to basically sweep
- 6:43their homes at midnight to clear out bad energy.
- 6:47Well, there you go. Well, Britain has got a very
- 6:49high energy bill, so that might be something.
- 6:52To. I like the next one which is
- 6:54South Africa. They throw out old furniture and
- 6:57it gets hurled out of windows and that is amazing.
- 7:02I mean, this jaw-dropping tradition symbolises letting go
- 7:05of the past. It is a very good idea.
- 7:07I think that's an excellent one. I've done that with your
- 7:09furniture of course, but. I was underwear.
- 7:13Now, in Switzerland, people celebrate the new year by
- 7:17purposefully dropping ice cream on the floor as a symbol of
- 7:20abundance. This quirky tradition may sound
- 7:23wasteful, but for the Swiss it's a gesture of hope, prosperity in
- 7:27the coming year. Unless, of course, you are the
- 7:29unsuspecting person who happens to step in and slip up on your
- 7:32backside. Yes, these strange rich.
- 7:35Yes, interesting. Now I just just to add to my
- 7:39recent comments, I was just saying about how that
- 7:43realisation that you've never amounted to anything hits you as
- 7:46another year slides by. There's a Bible verse I've got
- 7:50for you. This is from an equally
- 7:53depression part of the Bible, Lamentations, Lamentations 322
- 7:58to 23, in which it says this. This is interesting because it
- 8:01is talking about a disastrous time when you failed or people
- 8:08have failed you or the world hasn't gone how you wanted to.
- 8:10And it's all very depressing. And it says because of the
- 8:13Lord's great love we are not consumed for his compassions
- 8:19never fail. They are new every morning Great
- 8:23is your faithfulness so the you're being called it turns
- 8:26into a a hymn to God that new every morning that is used in
- 8:31several worship songs the this bringing people to worship of
- 8:36God because they realise however much they may have messed up.
- 8:39Now you personally, I recognise I was generalising there.
- 8:42I was more talking about myself, but you may have had a brilliant
- 8:47year and you may be surpassed all expectations of the sort of
- 8:52person you wanted to be and be a great success.
- 8:55But still, for you and for all the normal people around, God's
- 8:59great love for us means that we are not consumed.
- 9:03However depressing life might be, might be, or have a good
- 9:06life might be. God still loves up and every
- 9:09morning. God loves, still loves us well
- 9:11and every morning, even on New Year's Day for all of 2026, God
- 9:15will still be with us. So there's no need to panic.
- 9:18Here's a thought just to sort of conclude this special episode.
- 9:22It's all about New Year, but the same old feeling.
- 9:27The mark of the New Year commences on January the 1st,
- 9:31celebrated with fizzing fireworks that light up and
- 9:34burst. The drinks all flow quickly to
- 9:37quench an enthusiastic thirst in the atmosphere of hope where
- 9:41folk are immersed. Then by January the second most
- 9:45of the joy has dispersed because being back at work signals the
- 9:49revelry has reversed. By now you've broken resolutions
- 9:53as you cussed and cursed, and the start of the year already
- 9:58feels like the worst. Happy New Year.
