- 0:07What kind of love crosses boundaries,
- 0:14endures rejection,
- 0:17and keeps searching anyways?
- 0:22What kind of love calls out,
- 0:25here I am,
- 0:27even to those who turn their backs on it?
- 0:32SPEAKER_00: Well, today's scriptures show us what happens when love goes looking.
- 0:40And we will see that it is not always tidy and it is not always
- 0:49welcomed,
- 0:51believe it or not.
- 0:53SPEAKER_00: But it is always powerful and
- 0:56This is the love that shows up in tombs and in wastelands and
- 1:02in graveyards that
- 1:04SPEAKER_00: searches out the forgotten that will not stop calling until we are found.
- 1:14SPEAKER_00: God speaks to a people who weren't even seeking him in Isaiah.
- 1:21SPEAKER_00: He says, I was ready to be found, but...
- 1:26SPEAKER_00: You weren't even looking.
- 1:29SPEAKER_00: And still, God keeps reaching out.
- 1:33SPEAKER_00: Hands stretched out.
- 1:35SPEAKER_00: Love extended to eternity.
- 1:40SPEAKER_00: Even to those who were walking away, the Israelites at that time.
- 1:48SPEAKER_00: We see in Isaiah a God that is not distant,
- 1:53SPEAKER_00: that is not walking away and is not indifferent to us.
- 1:58This is a love that doesn't wait for us to get it all together
- 2:04or even to return to it.
- 2:08SPEAKER_00: It is a love that shows up first.
- 2:13SPEAKER_00: That seeks out.
- 2:15SPEAKER_00: In the business world, in the hotel industry, we called it customer care.
- 2:22SPEAKER_00: Right?
- 2:24SPEAKER_00: We called it anticipating the guest's needs.
- 2:29SPEAKER_00: Right?
- 2:30SPEAKER_00: But in scripture, it is more than just simple service.
- 2:35SPEAKER_00: It is love.
- 2:37SPEAKER_00: Deep, profound, transformational love that initiates love.
- 2:44SPEAKER_00: despite rejection.
- 2:48SPEAKER_00: In the New Testament scripture,
- 2:51SPEAKER_00: Jesus crosses a lake into Gentile territory,
- 2:57SPEAKER_00: a place that he,
- 2:58SPEAKER_00: according to the other rabbis and even the Israelite scriptures,
- 3:02SPEAKER_00: he should not have gone.
- 3:04And he walks into another place that he should not have gone,
- 3:08into a graveyard.
- 3:10SPEAKER_00: into fear, into uncleanliness.
- 3:16SPEAKER_00: And who does that?
- 3:17SPEAKER_00: Who goes looking for a man that even his community has given up on?
- 3:23SPEAKER_00: Well, we see in the scripture that Jesus does.
- 3:28SPEAKER_00: This time and many, many times.
- 3:31SPEAKER_00: Because that is what love does.
- 3:38You know,
- 3:40I think as people,
- 3:42we typically want a gospel that is just neat and tidy.
- 3:49We want a predictable Savior that's going to do the things that
- 3:54we know that that
- 3:55SPEAKER_00: Savior,
- 3:55SPEAKER_00: that Messiah,
- 3:56SPEAKER_00: that Jesus is going to do.
- 3:59SPEAKER_00: But love will always take us to uncomfortable places.
- 4:08SPEAKER_00: I will say it again.
- 4:10SPEAKER_00: Love always takes us into uncomfortable places.
- 4:16SPEAKER_00: Love never plays it safe.
- 4:23SPEAKER_00: I recall a similar moment,
- 4:26or at least I kind of thought about it as I was reflecting on
- 4:29this scripture when
- 4:31SPEAKER_00: my wife and I and our children were in Sicily.
- 4:36SPEAKER_00: Beth and I met a young woman.
- 4:40SPEAKER_00: We'll call her Anna.
- 4:44She was an American mother of twins who was being abused and
- 4:50held captive,
- 4:53literally,
- 4:54SPEAKER_00: out in the Campania, we called it, held captive by her Sicilian husband.
- 5:02SPEAKER_00: She was alone, she was terrified, and she was far from home.
- 5:11SPEAKER_00: And helping her was not easy, and it was actually not even safe.
- 5:18We helped her replace her passport,
- 5:21and we helped her escape the country with her children.
- 5:27SPEAKER_00: It was the right thing to do, but it came with a cost.
- 5:33Death threats from her Sicilian family to the point that Beth
- 5:38and the children had
- 5:39SPEAKER_00: to fly to southern Italy off the island for a period of time.
- 5:48SPEAKER_00: Now, we did not go looking for this situation, right?
- 5:52SPEAKER_00: I did not want to be in the situation,
- 5:55SPEAKER_00: and I struggled,
- 5:57SPEAKER_00: honestly,
- 5:58SPEAKER_00: whether we should do anything,
- 6:01SPEAKER_00: whether we should help.
- 6:02SPEAKER_00: What is the right thing?
- 6:04SPEAKER_00: The question, what does love do in these kinds of situations?
- 6:10SPEAKER_00: What does a Christian do in these kind of situations?
- 6:17SPEAKER_00: What does a foreigner do?
- 6:19living in a foreign country without any legal rights do in this
- 6:26kind of situation,
- 6:27SPEAKER_00: because that's what I was,
- 6:30SPEAKER_00: living in Sicily with the permission of the government,
- 6:33SPEAKER_00: but not a citizen there.
- 6:38SPEAKER_00: I didn't go looking for this situation, but it seemed like God did.
- 6:46SPEAKER_00: God put us there,
- 6:47SPEAKER_00: put us in that place,
- 6:49SPEAKER_00: made us aware of this situation,
- 6:53SPEAKER_00: and we chose to follow it.
- 6:56SPEAKER_00: Because we believed deeply that love crosses borders of geography,
- 7:04SPEAKER_00: of safety,
- 7:04SPEAKER_00: of comfort for ourselves.
- 7:07SPEAKER_00: It goes where others won't go.
- 7:12SPEAKER_00: And that is the kind of love that we see in Jesus.
- 7:18And that is the kind of love that I believe we are called to
- 7:22live into and out of
- 7:25SPEAKER_00: because of Jesus.
- 7:29SPEAKER_00: In this story, we find a man who is chained up.
- 7:34SPEAKER_00: He is naked.
- 7:37SPEAKER_00: He is screaming naked.
- 7:40ostracized by his community but by the end of the story he's
- 7:47clothed he's calm he's
- 7:50at peace he is sitting at Jesus's feet Jesus didn't just cast
- 7:57out the demons from
- 7:58SPEAKER_00: him he restored the man's dignity
- 8:03He gave him back his name,
- 8:07his story,
- 8:08his future,
- 8:10and his place in the community.
- 8:16SPEAKER_00: Isaiah says God won't destroy everything,
- 8:19SPEAKER_00: but that there is a blessing in the cluster of grapes.
- 8:22SPEAKER_00: I love that.
- 8:24There's a blessing in the cluster of grapes,
- 8:27the scripture in Isaiah says.
- 8:29SPEAKER_00: And that is, I believe, what Jesus sees in this man, a cluster of grapes.
- 8:36SPEAKER_00: A small little cluster of worth that the world,
- 8:41SPEAKER_00: that his community,
- 8:42that his friends and his family have overlooked and ended up
- 8:45chaining him in a
- 8:48SPEAKER_00: graveyard.
- 8:52SPEAKER_00: Just take a moment and think for a moment.
- 8:55SPEAKER_00: It may be uncomfortable, but how many people in our lives do we chain up
- 9:06Figuratively,
- 9:08we probably don't do it literally,
- 9:11but emotionally,
- 9:13spiritually,
- 9:14relationally.
- 9:15How many people do we chain up because it's just too much for
- 9:21us to bear their pain?
- 9:25SPEAKER_00: Just too hard for us to see it and to deal with it.
- 9:32SPEAKER_00: But love does not fear brokenness.
- 9:40SPEAKER_00: Love enters into it and then love restores.
- 9:50Interestingly in this story,
- 9:51there's a twist,
- 9:54as there seems to always be.
- 9:57SPEAKER_00: When the crowd,
- 9:58SPEAKER_00: the man's community,
- 10:00SPEAKER_00: sees the man healed,
- 10:03SPEAKER_00: instead of rejoicing and being excited,
- 10:05SPEAKER_00: the scripture says that they are afraid.
- 10:08SPEAKER_00: And they ask Jesus to leave.
- 10:11We see what you've done,
- 10:13and we would just like if you would just sort of head on down
- 10:17the road.
- 10:18SPEAKER_00: Why?
- 10:19SPEAKER_00: Why?
- 10:22SPEAKER_00: Because this kind of love,
- 10:24the kind of love that I am talking about that enters into
- 10:28brokenness and then
- 10:30SPEAKER_00: restores,
- 10:32SPEAKER_00: disrupts.
- 10:36SPEAKER_00: This kind of love overturns what is comfortable in our world.
- 10:43SPEAKER_00: It changes the power dynamics in our community.
- 10:49SPEAKER_00: It shifts priorities.
- 10:54SPEAKER_00: In Isaiah, the people rejected God while they were claiming holiness.
- 11:01SPEAKER_00: In Luke, they reject healing itself.
- 11:05Because it came in a way and from someone who they did not
- 11:09expect or respect,
- 11:13really.
- 11:14SPEAKER_00: And that happens today, too.
- 11:19SPEAKER_00: This July,
- 11:20SPEAKER_00: I'm quite excited,
- 11:21I will be attending the Church of the Brethren Annual
- 11:24Conference in Greensboro for
- 11:27SPEAKER_00: the first time as a Church of the Brethren pastor.
- 11:31SPEAKER_00: which is kind of cool.
- 11:32SPEAKER_00: I've gone before, but never as a Church of the Brethren pastor.
- 11:35SPEAKER_00: So I'm very excited about this.
- 11:37SPEAKER_00: And one of the key witness efforts,
- 11:40SPEAKER_00: if you don't know the Church of the Brethren,
- 11:43SPEAKER_00: wherever they go,
- 11:44SPEAKER_00: they try to do good,
- 11:47SPEAKER_00: be a good witness,
- 11:49SPEAKER_00: show love for the community that they're going towards too.
- 11:54And so this year,
- 11:55the key witness effort is to focus on gun violence prevention.
- 12:02SPEAKER_00: So attendees of the conference are being asked to wear orange.
- 12:07SPEAKER_00: And I see some orange here today.
- 12:08SPEAKER_00: You probably didn't wear it for an alliance to,
- 12:11SPEAKER_00: you know,
- 12:12SPEAKER_00: aligning yourself with victims of gun violence.
- 12:14SPEAKER_00: But nonetheless, I wore orange in June, which was actually the month.
- 12:21SPEAKER_00: But we're going to be doing it, remembering it again in July.
- 12:25So people are encouraged to wear orange as a way of showing
- 12:30that they are standing
- 12:31SPEAKER_00: with victims and the families of victims of gun violence.
- 12:35There will be what's called a Be Smart equipping session on
- 12:40safe gun storage.
- 12:43SPEAKER_00: There's going to be a prayer vigil,
- 12:45and there's going to be a breakfast as well for conversation on
- 12:48how our beloved
- 12:49SPEAKER_00: community can respond to the gun violence that's happening in our world.
- 12:56SPEAKER_00: It is a public witness of love.
- 13:01SPEAKER_00: At least that's how it's being understood by the church of the brethren.
- 13:07SPEAKER_00: But we need to be honest with ourselves.
- 13:10SPEAKER_00: Even this kind of public witness of love can make people uncomfortable.
- 13:18Some may and probably will say,
- 13:21why bring politics into the church,
- 13:26right?
- 13:28SPEAKER_00: But I don't see it that way.
- 13:30SPEAKER_00: I don't see that we are bringing politics into the church.
- 13:35SPEAKER_00: Instead,
- 13:36I see that this is a public witness of what love looks like in
- 13:43the public forum,
- 13:45SPEAKER_00: in front of people,
- 13:47SPEAKER_00: a love that mourns for those who are mourning.
- 13:52SPEAKER_00: A love that protects those who need protection.
- 13:56SPEAKER_00: A love that risks being misunderstood to say, you matter.
- 14:03SPEAKER_00: Your pain matters.
- 14:05SPEAKER_00: You are not forgotten in this situation.
- 14:09SPEAKER_00: And just like in Isaiah and in Luke,
- 14:12SPEAKER_00: that kind of love can make people want to turn away and push away.
- 14:20SPEAKER_00: But Jesus teaches us to show up because that is what love does.
- 14:30SPEAKER_00: Back to the literal man that we were talking about in Luke,
- 14:33SPEAKER_00: the demonized man that Jesus liberates.
- 14:39SPEAKER_00: The man...
- 14:40SPEAKER_00: wants to stay with Jesus.
- 14:42SPEAKER_00: And of course he does, right?
- 14:44SPEAKER_00: I mean,
- 14:44if you were in that situation and a guy comes along and puts
- 14:47your whole life
- 14:48SPEAKER_00: together,
- 14:49SPEAKER_00: what do you want to do?
- 14:51SPEAKER_00: I want to hang out with that guy, right?
- 14:53SPEAKER_00: But Jesus says, no, go home.
- 14:55SPEAKER_00: Go home and tell your story.
- 15:05SPEAKER_00: Perhaps the most important thing that I'm going to say this morning,
- 15:08SPEAKER_00: Jesus doesn't just save us.
- 15:12SPEAKER_00: He sends us.
- 15:16SPEAKER_00: When love goes looking for us,
- 15:20SPEAKER_00: when love goes looking for you,
- 15:23SPEAKER_00: it also sends us looking for others.
- 15:30SPEAKER_00: That is what the Church of the Brethren is doing,
- 15:32SPEAKER_00: I believe,
- 15:32SPEAKER_00: wearing orange,
- 15:33SPEAKER_00: praying with our feet,
- 15:35SPEAKER_00: building peace where the world sees division.
- 15:37SPEAKER_00: That's love, and I believe that is our calling.
- 15:45SPEAKER_00: So today, maybe you feel far off.
- 15:52SPEAKER_00: Maybe you feel like that man in the tombs, forgotten, overwhelmed.
- 15:57Maybe you feel like the crowd,
- 16:00afraid of what real love might change or ask of you.
- 16:07SPEAKER_00: Or maybe you're being called like the healed man to go and tell.
- 16:15SPEAKER_00: Wherever you are, hear this.
- 16:17SPEAKER_00: God is still saying, here I am.
- 16:22SPEAKER_00: Jesus is still crossing seas.
- 16:26SPEAKER_00: Love is still looking.
- 16:30And it is looking for you,
- 16:34your family,
- 16:35your friends,
- 16:37your neighbors,
- 16:40and our enemies.
