- 1:03now it's Tom for this week's episode of Pat Novak for Hire. Georgie
- 1:10Lampson. That's what the sign out in front of my office says, Pat
- 1:27Novak for Higher. I was sure you can just got it fifteen different ways
- 1:32and put down on the waterfront in San Francisco. At all needs the same
- 1:34thing, ukay, and I'll do your customer's always right. We've got an
- 1:38open the wallet and I'll massage with an open mind. Have the murder and
- 1:44the fike get not arranged and down here. You're either high on your ses
- 1:48or flat on your vac because most of the time you get onto one kind
- 1:51of fish faster than inside, and you don't drive your foul because nobody cares.
- 1:55Even then, you can't complain during the summer the more for who was
- 1:59fucking town? Oh? I went boat and wrap up small skins and twenty
- 2:04dollars bills. The money stood and when you get it, but there's no
- 2:07retirement plan. You can't buy vaccination for trouble. I found that out last
- 2:13Wednesday night. I closed up shop about eight o'clock and my stat been walking
- 2:15home. The city was going it. Sanzanin was trying to crawl through one
- 2:20of those San Francisco hot spells. Was blast by every five years. Frow
- 2:24up on the hill with China town tell means blind up down below like sweaty
- 2:28little kids waiting for a shower, and was eating headaches all the way.
- 2:32But when I opened my front door and stepped inside, who wanted to talk
- 2:36about the weather. She was standing in the dark company cigarette and the simulator
- 2:40figure cut against the window was something you'd never believed. And she reached over
- 2:46turned on my lamp. It was a fast, dizzy trip. When I
- 2:49got around to her eyes, they really kind of means you think of hard
- 2:51work than the guys is deep warm. We needed to count from fast actions
- 2:55when they came to a boil. The smile was familiar, lips red and
- 3:00moist. I think nose will be She did lunch of nice things with him.
- 3:06Now he's talking as well. See welcome home. It's been a long
- 3:12time. Yeah, it's good to see you. Georgie on your mind.
- 3:15You can't you ever take your time? If not mine, it's borrowed.
- 3:20And then special easy business, got a drink? How is he just about
- 3:25rides? You can't get hurt. That's what they told the Spanish Armada,
- 3:29getting soft pats. No nothing their head and I look at the work.
- 3:31Let's talk otherwise. Let's just be cute, all right. The last time
- 3:36you saw me, it was a year ago. As far as you know,
- 3:38our no sound fine one. I'm not afraid of doing here can shanghai?
- 3:43Yes, that can't cut. I want to be on the welcoming committee.
- 3:46You can't. Nobody is. It's just going to enter in the stream.
- 3:49So I need a book. I need you. I'm not They don't
- 3:52go, lady. It's easy to falling downstairs. Come on, let's dealer
- 3:58drink all right, Patty, My stepfather's trying to leave the cal cut to
- 4:01she left. He likes the party. She likes the package she's gonna get
- 4:06from somebody aboards a cal cutter. That's a business. I'm sure she gets
- 4:12that package of all right. She doesn't even know Wrong Town. Who picks
- 4:16up the check? Yeah, I'm forty dollars covered. Too much for an
- 4:20easy job and none enough for a hard one. Where do I find you
- 4:23if I need bail? There's a time. I'm even call me to tomorrow.
- 4:27I'm Patsy. Thanks. I don't think get easy. Rush is scary.
- 4:33Patsy, you really scary? Do you remember the Yeah, the memories
- 4:42are like everything else. I wear out. A little later. I stop
- 4:57the door and watched them move down the hall for the stairs. A white
- 5:00dress she had on was plain enough, but it didn't have a mind of
- 5:02its own. I just did what it was cold, and tried to behave,
- 5:05but Georgie and the nature wouldn't let it. There was only one cat
- 5:10in, saying Georgie. She always left too soon, like a small bottle
- 5:13of flying horsebeeks. It must have been a good five minutes after she left
- 5:16when I heard the butter. I was looking for the white dress when I
- 5:19opened the door, but I was looking the wrong way. Something with an
- 5:34echo letter came down hard on the side of my head. I went down
- 5:36like the mercury in a quick breeze. The tip wasn't nice, but it
- 5:41was long. Half way there, I came up for breath, and I
- 5:44found the deck of one of my own boats underneath the bay bridge. Lights
- 5:46were still around him. That made it kind of cozy, but my eye
- 5:49had gotten focused. The smooth and bundle laid out next to me, shaped
- 5:53up like Georgie Lampson. She wasn't looking in best. I had just enough
- 5:58time to remember a pair of women shoes standing next to my face, and
- 6:00I almost have moved and mend my ticket for the return trip. The next
- 6:05time I opened my eyes, I was looking at the lights on Peer nineteen.
- 6:09Shoes were still there, but this time they were black and feed inside,
- 6:13squashed out, wide and black like tired. Beech State had met only
- 6:15one thing, Helman from homicide. He stopped playing Mount Novak Get up.
- 6:21Yeah, I thought they'd never go home. Your boyfriend here isn't talking bashful?
- 6:27Yeah Novak real shy? He did? Who is it? Because what
- 6:30you get paid for it? What about the girl? It was here?
- 6:32County Hospital? Your better price. You makes at Novak because you like blonde
- 6:36Helman, because nobody beats to murder rap Novaker. You talked fun him,
- 6:40so does the un The lead type printers all over it. Would that make
- 6:43me a plumber better than that Novack? The pipe fits the end and that
- 6:46guy still like a cruise there. Maybe he's the bubble goo smart Novak.
- 6:50Now, come on, who's the guy? And who is the Dame?
- 6:53Georgie lamps for the guy? I don't know, will Novak? You take
- 6:57care of it all. You try hard, got your hell when you move
- 6:59your lips, when you're use your fingers when you conquer. You never get
- 7:00the right answer. Don't tell me no back. I'm not my cherry bets
- 7:03in the morning. You don't have a best Helvin. You start taking once,
- 7:05but it gave you a headache. Now when you get on the swee
- 7:08you have I pound your way out and your best I warned you no back
- 7:14talk, knife and save teeth. Yeah, I'll talk when that blonde tells
- 7:17her story. If she makes the grade, how does she fig it?
- 7:19She met me in my apartment last night on the business five minutes after she
- 7:24left the doorbell wrong. When I answered that somebody snapping. Now you take
- 7:27it from there. Yeah, I will da go ahead, Helen, but
- 7:30don't look hurt when the case blows up on your face. Are you giving?
- 7:31That's all I'm giving, Helen, You figure it. I took the
- 7:33gall on this girl I don't even know for a ride at three in the
- 7:35morning. We had a party and I killed a guy. The gal.
- 7:39I only messed up good because I like the wish she talked sounds scared.
- 7:42I'm not, Helen, but you are because it doesn't add Why did they
- 7:45think my spell with that same hunk of pipe? And how did I drive
- 7:46back here to meet you? Keep your mouth helping for my boy? They
- 7:49got a little green room of a tan Quinton gets awful stuffy when they close
- 7:54the door. About where I left Helm and I figured I'd had a bumper
- 8:05common trouble for one day. The sun was just beginning to stagger up over
- 8:09the Berkeley Hills when they caught a cap uptown on the way. I stopped
- 8:13off for coffee and a six am chronic on one of the little grief joints
- 8:16off Jury Street. The windows were flying with grease and my light was bad,
- 8:20but the reading was money from home. The story made me stop counting
- 8:24the lumps on my head. Professor Burton Lampson got himself murdered in the Shanghai
- 8:28hotel them a month ago, and they were sending his body back on the
- 8:31FS Calcutta. It was due to anchor in the bay that night, like
- 8:35Georgie said, but the shipping page didn't agree. Calcutta was lifted inside the
- 8:39gate at seven point thirty the night before out of that checktot What about that
- 8:43package that had everybody worried? Well, when I got back to my apart,
- 8:46when I called the hospital to check on Georgie, we're still giving odds
- 8:50a long thinning kind. A little later, I was in the middle of
- 8:54a cold shower, adding up rows of zeros and getting different answers every round.
- 8:58On the phone. Rail was Helm and he was selling nothing to smile,
- 9:01did you an I'll tell me you're worried. The dead guy named Hayes
- 9:07local coach to let you know him. Yeah, I'm an old friend of
- 9:09the family, the guy from one of the old families in town, the
- 9:13important kind. His blood wasn't blue, No, but we are. We're
- 9:16feeling the pressure already, so I'm calling you in today for a little talk.
- 9:20A great job, Helen, he got on smacking your fat list,
- 9:22because you've got to get more answer than questioning. Monny Novac. I didn't
- 9:24think he was a different I hung up the phone. I was seeing more
- 9:28red than the bleachers at a bull fight. I probably would have walked like
- 9:31by him. He didn't know his mouth even then. It wasn't much more
- 9:35than a last week. It was a skinny guy, and he against the
- 9:37do with a half smile, twisting his mouth and a bright wild look in
- 9:41his eyes. As your invitation, mister, all right, really again,
- 9:52what happens now? None snowback? I do was the gun much? Would
- 9:54hand up the pack? Sorry, mister, you're in the wrong, wrong
- 9:58group. Snowback. I couldn't cough want to, I don't intend would happened
- 10:01twice? The fact? Could you look you? I'm going to spell it
- 10:03again. I don't know what you're talking about. And I think that count
- 10:07on your pointing, and I think you realize I'm a bunch of unity has
- 10:09done the snowback for the most time. A right find it right over there
- 10:13now here, right next to come. He stood there for a minute shaking
- 10:28his head as if he wanted to go back in life, five minutes from
- 10:31his life. All of a sudden, he jerked around in his tracks and
- 10:35stumbled to the door like a timid drunk when you're telling me that enough,
- 10:39and he pulled it up hard against the wall on his knees. It was
- 10:41a little too late for prayers. I stood there for a minute, trying
- 10:45to think of a good lawyer who owed me money. But I liked he
- 10:48was a courtroom and a picture of helm and smiled when he was into the
- 10:50verdict, well accident or not. If Helman dropped in with a body on
- 10:54the floor, bearings of deep and sandpointin, you'd be bringing the air and
- 10:58paper bag. When a knot in my stomach on tied. I dragged the
- 11:01little guy away from the door, and I rode him on his back.
- 11:03His eyes were still asking for the pack, and the rest of his didn't
- 11:07care outside of a few bucks, as while it was empty, not even
- 11:11a Londern tag. I got dressed, and I pulled the blindes and locked
- 11:15the place up, and then I went out to look for the only honest
- 11:18guy I know. A next doctor the name of Jack o'maanagan, who was
- 11:20a fine surgeon, while something made him decide life was temporary at the best.
- 11:24Now he's got a permanent post on a bar stool, looking for ants
- 11:28at the bottom of whiskey bottles. It's hard on the liver that way,
- 11:31which you're never short on dreams. I finally found him with a bourbon hail
- 11:35and a musty little Italian joined over in the North Beach. It was a
- 11:37long stretch from Easter Monday, but he was still celebrating Irish independence. He
- 11:43looked like he was on the wrong side because his nose was a bright orange.
- 11:48Let's see, my boy, you're just in time. These simplement on
- 11:52his Sicilians have agreed to embark with me on a crusade, and this underwrite
- 11:58Hush incident of the Sounds of Saint Patrick, the Power Street chapter. I
- 12:03invite you to join us. I got to talk to you about to fittingly
- 12:09observe the eccasion of Old Area's joyful victory. We're first fortifying ourselves with grappa
- 12:15and pushminows. Then we sally fort to chase all the snakes out of Long
- 12:20Beach and the cockroaches out of Chinatown. How does that strike to Petsy,
- 12:24and why aren't you smiling? She's a glorious day, because I'm in a
- 12:28germ and I want to talk to Jack on a pets. You remind me
- 12:31of the You're sitting on the curb and pouting just because they won't let you
- 12:35march in front of the Bend in the victory for Reade. You're sa Patsy,
- 12:39admitted Jack, and I'm in big trouble. You're always in trouble,
- 12:43Pepsi. You're a child of adversity, a son of storm. The faith
- 12:48spit in your eye and you try to Retelli, but the wind's always glowing
- 12:52in the wrong direction. You're a last sleep in the model storm. Petsy,
- 12:56you're a febbro shaking a tiny fist of the mountain. You would like
- 13:00to fight with some strange fantastic course, wouldn't you, Patchy, But you
- 13:03can't fight anybody in your size. Men are too small and the gods are
- 13:07too big. Hatsi, you're lost when you are through? Yeah, what
- 13:13kind of trouble? The pair of bumer the wraps, Jackal. Somebody sat
- 13:16me in my apartment last night and I woke up this morning with a dead
- 13:18guy that sounds interesting. What was it you were drinking? Helmet dot depends
- 13:24on me or a dubious honor. You were mentioned to murders. The guy
- 13:28came in my apartment, this boy waiting a gun and passing for a package
- 13:31that I never heard of. He started wrestling for the gun, mildly exciting.
- 13:35Now who got a k there? Right? And it's yes, Tretsy,
- 13:37you have absolutely do it. Used for losing your temper? Why you're
- 13:41not even Irish? Still, you're always getting hot headed at the wrong time.
- 13:46Go to the jackal. I didn't even know the guy. I'm sorry
- 13:48if I can't try. Sure, that's what the British general said. Actually
- 13:52hung Robert Emmitt the duck, but he didn't straighten out the Marcelle and his
- 13:56mate. What's you doing out of jail off jack? Well? Did you
- 14:01ever hear of a missus Sheila Lampson? Certainly I'm very offended with her.
- 14:07In the past year she set up drinks for every eligible and non eligible in
- 14:11San Francisco except me. Not much, but I often wonder what that poor
- 14:16old professor she married us with his evenings. He stopped worrying Jaco. He's
- 14:20dead now, Look, will you have to own to the chronicle Morgan,
- 14:22check with Steve Nagel, and then they got all the old puts on the
- 14:24professor and missus Lampsoia. And while you're there, check on a guy with
- 14:28the name of one Haynes. You got there, Yes, but what do
- 14:31I do for my behalf a buck for carper and nothing for booze. Surely
- 14:35your Jestyato will have quick clarle and get going, say o, pet,
- 14:39but you've broken of a beautiful party. My Sicilian frems have gone to sleep,
- 14:43and I'm thirsty again. Mitch, have four or five for the road,
- 14:46shout player Jack, Oh right, Patchy, but only for you,
- 14:52by the way, where can I find you? I'm gonna take you by
- 14:54the County hospital, and I work of Sheila Lamson. If I remember the
- 14:58story directly, Patsy, he will better reduce your scheduled food mount job.
- 15:11When I left Joco, I tagged by Mama Lupo's on Turney Street and I
- 15:15called the hospital with them. Georgie was a little better. At least the
- 15:18undertakers would stop bidding. Mama Luco crought it up for a storm and I
- 15:22asked to borrow a new car for a couple of hours. But a few
- 15:24paths and the paint and she was all giggled and carfe. Ten minutes later,
- 15:28I was fighting traffic on Propero Avenue. The south wind out there a
- 15:31brought the slaughterhouses right under your front seat. I found a hospital out on
- 15:35the fire edge, and it's a nice looking pile of dirty red brick.
- 15:39The nurse in the war didn't believe I was Georgie's brother until I asked her
- 15:43if she was busy Saturday night, and then she saw the resemblance right away.
- 15:46I found Georgie buying a couple of screens at the end of the war,
- 15:50and for a dying woman, she looked pretty good. She smiled a
- 15:52little, and she saw me like she was saving in for a bigger try.
- 15:54Later on, Got see, I'm FACTI made it. I'm gonna keep
- 15:58a show a baby. Who was it last night? Sorry? Got you
- 16:03can't tell her your w Yeah. Later in that package, the same deal.
- 16:11Well, I got a deal to Geordie and murder Ram. They want
- 16:14to hang it on me. Who warn Hanes? You know I remember,
- 16:19good course, I'm like you're slicing it off of thin for forty bucks,
- 16:22Georgie, no choice. Maybe you're driving, don't go through any red lights,
- 16:29yea, I said, Georgie. I've seen you later. Yeah,
- 16:34having a good time, Novak, you know any phone numbers? Was I
- 16:37mine? Human? Not to day brad boy, and you're near a street
- 16:41car and I had the show. But what's your beef? Novak? We
- 16:44got to get fine to be paid at the visit. So sorry, Helman
- 16:47books solid come on perform in to Novak, I wouldn't at the point.
- 16:49What's the matter, Helman? You wanted what I told you. I don't
- 16:52know anything about last night. I never saw Hayes before. You got me
- 16:53wrong, Novak. This want about the nine. We just found it in
- 16:56your office down on the water front. Fine you yourself and a half and
- 17:00keep busy. You'd better come down. No rob a knife and some guys
- 17:03back. Budini couldn't get out of that one in two hours with both hands
- 17:15and a cannon olive oil. It was like chasing Sinai with a bucket of
- 17:18brandy from it tastes blake, but it's only a matter of time. Well.
- 17:22I headed for Sheila Lampson's place and on the way I pulled up by
- 17:25a drugstore out on the hate Stoep Jungles and called the chronicle. More they
- 17:29said Jocko had just left, so I called the nearest bar and actually they
- 17:33had a customer with a bright orange nose. They did Jack speaking novack,
- 17:38what'd you find out? A joying a smaller pressure upbeat? For instance,
- 17:45Howard drops she stopped seeing the Professor. Forty six there was a skin movie
- 17:52The Nasty Child. The Professor's first wife, Bober jumped off the brake and
- 17:59go on on she man in the Professor. Shila was mentioned in every gossip
- 18:03column in town. I'm sure the profession took golf and designed to pick from
- 18:07d China. On ago, he was murdered in a Shanghai hotel and a
- 18:11handful of emperors were stolen. The authorities figured that the murder was privature.
- 18:18The Professor had three major operations, and at the time of the murder he
- 18:23had less than a week ago. James is one of those black sheep that
- 18:29wealthy families had got off without a penny. He's one of Sila Lambson's discords,
- 18:33and he's now one is made back from the Oriente on the s stercutter.
- 18:37Anything else you stick to the lane and iron stick to Mine was still
- 18:53a sack full of holes in question marks, but at least Jacko's leaves had
- 18:56a little juice in them. I found the Lampson House the best part of
- 19:00the seat Cliff district. It was one of those big nervous joints, hanging
- 19:03by its shutters to the side of a steep drop that slid down shop into
- 19:06the Pacific, all green trim and stuck over the color of mortgages. The
- 19:11front doorbell was wearing out in my hand when the maid showed up, and
- 19:12then she was tongue tied. She didn't know a thing except good money when
- 19:15it was offered. And then she told me i'd find Missus Lampson in the
- 19:18second floor sitting room. She went away. I found the sitting room all
- 19:22right, but Missus Lampson wasn't there, so I followed on through like came
- 19:26to a bedroom and a bright red ceiling, and I lived in feeling reminded
- 19:30you of something Henry h m had ordered for a bridal sweep. She was
- 19:33sitting next to the couch, holding a my opini and making noises like a
- 19:36leopard on her honeymoon. Wow, yeah, you always wear handkerchief of parties
- 19:44takes time? Yeshing, you and I have a dank fix? Oh you
- 19:52are? And I what's j Novak? What's yours? Movie? Got a
- 19:59name of a game? You're just like Mike. He's my new boyfriend.
- 20:03This is off. He went downstairs. Women. Hey, you picked a
- 20:11nice drink, mister Novac? Yeah, you feed or something must be the
- 20:19weather. Mister, you're a big spender. But I don't like watching smile.
- 20:29How about Sheila? You're picking a drink? Yes, a lot of
- 20:33questions don't like because I like answers. Now what about Sheila? Hey,
- 20:37you're gonna get rap of coma? Alright, all right, I'm feel like
- 20:41sister much better when you're nice to me. All I'm gonna start being nice.
- 20:48Oh mister, what was that for? I'm a big spender to here
- 20:55have another drink? I think maybe I'll have another you, mister? You
- 20:59know? Back start Mike coming up stairs? Baby, Now come on,
- 21:03where is she? Who cares? She's down tom anyway, she won't know
- 21:11you. Sorlly, Baby, I got a date. Mike does He's gonna
- 21:18walk through me. I'm sorry, baby, he's not my type. Mike
- 21:34was a tall, white pack, so I gave him a bargain offer.
- 21:37He didn't fold after too, but he had a kind of hurt look in
- 21:40his eye when I hit him the third time, like I didn't know he
- 21:41could take a hint. Well, he wound up and hit the floor.
- 21:45Every window in the house rattled, and I figured the Berkeley size mcgraft got
- 21:48a cheap thrill. I made it asprise the front door when I heard a
- 21:52car pull up on the driveway. When I got to the window, a
- 21:55dame and a guy. We're getting out of a new Nash and heading to
- 21:57the door. The guy was a middle class a gun, but at the
- 22:02gal with Sheila Lampson. She made a nice opposition. I couldn't wait around
- 22:06to see. I finally managed to make my apartment without having one of Helman's
- 22:10men picked me up, And when I got in, Jacko was just pulling
- 22:12himself another glass of Green Dreams and closing in the mirror like a man of
- 22:15distinctions. The stiff was still there on the floor next to a glass of
- 22:19ice water. Actually, I don't approve of your choice of body. Yes,
- 22:25the guy's dead Jackal were at opened up. She is the friends you
- 22:30were telling me about when you do the cash chamber patch Any phone calls now,
- 22:36did you mention it? Yes, Helman regularly on the quarter hour.
- 22:40Not very coherent, but I got the idea he's looking for you. Also
- 22:44a call from the hospital. They wanted to know the whereabouts of mister Georgie
- 22:48Lampson. What do you mean? It seems she disappeared a few hours ago
- 22:52from one of their wards. She perhaps she's sampling at this delicate dollar.
- 23:00Bruisie would help try shoot yourself, Patsy myself. I'm an old subscriber to
- 23:06the Socrates Plan of self destruction. If you wanted done right, do it?
- 23:10You said. By the way, have you noticed our friend's hands lately?
- 23:15It looks like he's entertaining a square of paper in his right hand.
- 23:18Yes. Wo he seems kind of stingy, but it doesn't he an old
- 23:30and not even a coded letter to pussle over for the address Jackal Captain edwardsmore
- 23:38s s Calfcutter Paramount Line, Shanghai. Let's now say sure we have another
- 23:45dreams lead Jacko right now. We haven't got the time. And that's who
- 23:48I think it is pat You're going to have lots of time. I'll just
- 23:51whip up a shot, go back talking the last time you checking here in
- 23:57ten minutes, off and done and off, going dead or alive? Back
- 24:00all right, Helen, there's a dead guy here in my apartment right now.
- 24:03Names Captain Edwards Small off the Calcutta. I don't need any more body,
- 24:07no back. I can hang out twice with what I got. All
- 24:10right, Cover, If you want your picture in the paper tomorrow, you
- 24:11can meet me out on sea Clip in fifteen minutes forty eight Camino Drive.
- 24:23When I hung up the phone, most of the puzzle streaking out like wet
- 24:26wash in a dry way. There's one thing to getting caught on. When
- 24:30you're bet on miracles, you buy it ticket straight through. I finally pulled
- 24:34up at the lamp seat place, and I started looking around for Helm and
- 24:37the joint looked about his crowded as a Kremlin breakfast percentator tap. I was
- 24:41taking a fast check, trying to figure how far they could have gone.
- 24:45When Helman bought his way through the box heads for the driveway. We flippled
- 24:49down behind the garage and around the back of the house. We just made
- 24:52it me sign for the curtain scene. Sheila Lampson was backing down slow toward
- 24:56the seawall, waving her arms in the air and fagging every inches away,
- 25:00when Georgie stumbled after, like the avenging angel, and she had a gun.
- 25:03She had a coat crossed over her hospital gown, and the look in
- 25:06her eyes told the whole story. Tears and hastily, lots of book.
- 25:10No, I look at it. You want to kill me. I'm crazy
- 25:15about that sweet pathy, but you weren't bited. Don't get too close to
- 25:19the alma your gun, Georgie, don't let it hang you. This is
- 25:22helman from homicide. No good pathy. This one's for me, isn't it.
- 25:26Isn't it for me? Please, Georgie, don't coper you to pathy.
- 25:36Your naked looks good stretch, please, George, said Sheila. Not
- 25:40yet. First, I want to tell you, however you are, how
- 25:42sweet you looked at my mother's fumul Are you rolling my father? How sweet
- 25:47for the other men? She loa magnificence, Judge. Please, I didn't
- 25:52know, George, I didn't know it. I swell think, Sheila,
- 25:57listen to me, em you sent Hanes to Shanghai. Boss, you wanted
- 26:03to kill my father though you were glass, Sheila tins and cream glassy.
- 26:07Here's Heela fla j Please you want you got a gun. Let's see.
- 26:22Take it easy, baby, you got a long trip. She did,
- 26:26doesn't she she did? She didn't die, baby that much led. She
- 26:32sank our little cool though it's starting to come in. Remember the party,
- 26:45Yeah, I remember, I'd say it. Please say it now, say
- 26:52it? Yeah, Georgie, I'd say it, but you're not listening.
- 27:23We found a letter in Georgie's coat pocket that told most of the story,
- 27:26and men Helman grabbed Mike, and Sheila's sisters let her the rest out of
- 27:30them. It wasn't a pretty story, but it moved. When Sheila spent,
- 27:36the professor broke and he checked out. Over in China, Georgie decided
- 27:40to vote a whist lawn. She made up that tony yarn about the Emeralds,
- 27:44and then she let Haines wind her father and walk off with him.
- 27:47They were glass. To make it look good, Haines played Paul Baron took
- 27:52the boat back with the body, but not before Georgie took the captain.
- 27:55When the first mate about that sack of emos Haines was supposed to have saw.
- 28:00They went to work. They robbed Haynes and the plant of the fake
- 28:03for a fake for the real Captain Owstol. Georgia had little mistakes sometimes that's
- 28:10all it takes. She came back here a few days before the cal Kada
- 28:14got in so that she could be around for the payoff. One of Sheila's
- 28:18pals must have spotted her and trail here to my place, and then the
- 28:22sappings started. That was the same night that cal Kata got in and people
- 28:25started checking Package didn't pull the triggers when Sheila ponder Package was a fake.
- 28:30She figured Haines was being cute, so he got it first, and then
- 28:33she went out after that original fake. She tried to double up and hang
- 28:37Haynes's body on me get rid of Georgie at the same time, but Georgie
- 28:41didn't diet. I don't know how the Captain con and Hobby through Shila,
- 28:45but her descil friends to care the person with the nine when he got anxious
- 28:48while on thet he count of Cold noses it as a real devil's game.
- 28:52Wherever he was. Georgie's old man must have been holding his side and were
- 28:56rolling in the aisles. Yeah, real form, and Sheila thought up gets
- 29:00enough to the seed, the teast gets better. I'll haven't answer the wrong
- 29:04question. How come a sniper like Georgie wants something as Steward's leave English.
- 29:08I don't know. She was a lot better about a lot of other things.
- 29:29Past included Lois Andrews, Steve Brody, Herbert Lynn, Jerry Taussner,
- 29:33Ivan did Mars, ray Erwin Borton, and Hal Sawyer. This is a
- 29:38Larry Quindley cat. What do you f Welcome back? Well, a little
- 30:55bit on the melodrama in terms, high on the melodrama in the way that
- 31:00it ended between the Lampson girls. But other than that, a pretty good
- 31:07episode, some great lines, even going right to the introduction to the episode.
- 31:17Even then, you can't complain. During the summer, the Morgues the
- 31:21coolest spot in town. Uh. The one thing I will say about the
- 31:25monologue is that he said there, you know, he said Pat Novak for
- 31:29hiring, and there's fifty he said, there's fifty ways to spell it.
- 31:33Actually I can only think of three. Let's see, there's Novak in ov
- 31:38Ack, there's Novak in ovk and I think you could probably do Novak just
- 31:45in Ovac. So I only think there's three ways to spell that about at
- 31:51any rate. Onto some listener comments and feedback, and we'll go ahead and
- 31:56start out with Annie, who writes it's uh. I love that man's phrasing.
- 32:02Regarding episode UH, give envelope to John st John and Daniel Breelan says
- 32:09this was a great episode for one liners. Well, that could be said
- 32:14of most Novak episodes. On the other side of the Ledger Joel says another
- 32:21formula episode, Novacci's guy killed engages drunk, Jocko meets blonde, gets knocked
- 32:28out, girl has killed. Helman says Novak did it. Novak's Novak meets
- 32:32fem fatale, Novak tracks killer boring, boring, hmmm, so tell me
- 32:38what you really think. Another listener emails in. Roger Uh says dear Adam
- 32:51started listening about six weeks ago, and I'm hooked. I love the variety
- 32:54between days and shows. I have a question about Pat Novak, which may
- 32:58pertain to some of the other shows as well. I was initially quite taken
- 33:01with the very witty dialogue in metaphors of Novak, But as is mentioned by
- 33:06you and other listeners, became aware with each subsequent show as to how very
- 33:09formulaic it tends to be. As I checked up Richard Bring, the writer
- 33:15of the show, it surprised me that someone who went on to write screenplays
- 33:19for movies like Captain Newman MD would be so formulaic. So my question is
- 33:23for shows like Novak, how much of the formula was dictated by the producers
- 33:29of the show or the stations, and how much leeway did the writers have.
- 33:32As I think about other medias, I see the same thing happening with
- 33:37early TV shows like Perry Mason. With Novak alumnus Raymond Burke, maybe it
- 33:42was just the way media production has tended to be for certain shows. Keep
- 33:45up the great work, and that's from Roger Roger. The important thing to
- 33:52understand about Pat Novak is that Novak was started in San Francisco, back when
- 34:08San Francisco was trying to join New York and Los Angeles in a little bit
- 34:15of Chicago in being a source where people went to have programs recorded, and
- 34:22there was a great creative freedom there and that's where the series was born,
- 34:27and it pretty much remained that way. It was that way because people enjoyed
- 34:31it, and it was very successful over ABC it's West Coast programming, and
- 34:39so we have this national version of Pat Novak for Hire, and this has
- 34:45always pretty much been the same show, the very same that Richard Breen really
- 34:52helped to create back in San Francisco. Other shows will vary in many ways,
- 35:00maybe both the most and a formulaic and perhaps the most unique of the
- 35:07shows. Certainly the way things progress in the show, the standard showdown between
- 35:16Novak and Hellman and Novak going to get jock O Madigan. It's reliable in
- 35:22most episodes. It happens like clockwork, though in an episode a couple of
- 35:28weeks ago, Jocko came into the story a lot more or early than usual,
- 35:32so there are some variations even within that. At the same time,
- 35:37Pat Novak with and perhaps only Johnny Madero, which was a Pat Novak a
- 35:45knockoff that Web made for Mutual and nineteen forty seven was the only mystery show
- 35:54to really rely on its dialogue, which all ways seem to come up with
- 36:01ways that continue to surprise us to say things, even if there's similar concepts
- 36:07in a way that delighted audiences. I think it's to say safe to say
- 36:13that no mystery drama before or since has ever relied on its dialogue to that
- 36:22degree and turned in such variety. And that's what makes the show really to
- 36:27this day, I think a bit of a cult classic. Certainly, it's
- 36:30not something that I think, boy, I wish every single show had gone
- 36:35out and imitated, but it is something that's incredibly well written. And certainly
- 36:40Breen was capable of doing other things, but this is the thing that you
- 36:46know, helped him and Jack Webb both began to make their way to Hollywood,
- 36:54and on this series, I think they were just letting loose in having
- 36:59a good time with the concept and seeing what they could write and which direction
- 37:04they could go. And it's that uniqueness there that makes it so worthwhile.
- 37:09I mean, a lot of shows can be defined really by formulas, whether
- 37:15it's Sam coming into the office to dictate his report to Effie on Sam Spade,
- 37:23the general setup of people coming to the office, Sam Spay going to
- 37:27the location, or the sitcoms. A lot of even the classics, tended
- 37:32to be a bit formulaic. I think what made the show's work was the
- 37:39execution and the ability to tell stories well, to act them well, to
- 37:45use great dialogue, and it really gets you to enjoy the experience so that
- 37:50you weren't like, Okay, we've seen this for the thousandth time, and
- 37:54finally, thanks for that question. Finally we have an email from Jackie who
- 37:59said, I have a very large collection of old time radio detectives or time
- 38:06radio cassettes, detective mysteries, comedies plays, variety shows which I'd love to
- 38:10donate. I can always bring them to my library or public radio station,
- 38:15but since they're cassettes, I'm afraid they'll wind up in a storeroom somewhere.
- 38:20Can you suggest an organization that would like them. Maybe they'd have the equipment
- 38:24to convert them to digital. Thank you love the show from Jackie, and
- 38:34and my answer to Jackie is there's a couple of organizations I would recommend to
- 38:40Jackie, and I would also recommend to anyone who has a large collection of
- 38:49old time radio media, whether we're talking about cassette tapes, real to real
- 38:54tapes, or transcription disc which are the best of all. I would recommend
- 39:04first of all old time radio researchers O T R. R. Dot org
- 39:09and UH, great group of people. And you know, if you get
- 39:15in contact with someone there, they can find someone to take a look at
- 39:20your material. And particularly if you have tapes and things of that sort that
- 39:25are not in common circulation to digitize it. You might also check out a
- 39:31local radio preservation club, particularly if you're not as begin to the Internet and
- 39:37mailing things out. Uh. There's some recommendations by the Digital Deli FTP of
- 39:49some good local radio preservation societies and that's at Digital Deli FTP dot com and
- 39:58uh you can look for the appropriate link. But the rest of it is
- 40:06slash recommendations affiliation dot html. That's Digitaldeli FTP dot com, Slash recommendations capital
- 40:17R affiliation dot html and whichever way you go. It's important if you have
- 40:29old materials on things such as CDs or not not CDs as much, but
- 40:37at one level, but records, tapes, reel to reel, or even
- 40:44video media. If you have a few lost episodes of Dragnet or Doctor Who
- 40:49or something that are aligning on the house in some old video format, it's
- 40:53important to get in touch with a qualified preservationist to make sure that that material
- 41:00can last and can be enjoyed by future generations. A lot of inconvenience and
- 41:08just plain lost material has occurred through people not getting in touch with someone who
- 41:14can care for that. So if you do have any sort of material that
- 41:22could or should be digitized, get in touch with some of those sources and
- 41:29you will find some assistance there. All right, well, we're running a
- 41:32bit late, but we will be back tomorrow with the adventures of Philip Marlow
