- 1:01We thank you, God, that your arm is not too short to save.
- 1:05We thank you for all of the things that you've done for us
- 1:08for our entire lives. And God, what you're planning to
- 1:11do, Lord, help us to be your hands and feet.
- 1:15Help us to fall more madly in love with you, King Jesus.
- 1:21Holy Spirit, guide us today. I decrease as you increase.
- 1:25It's all about King Jesus, Phyllis overflowing.
- 1:33Help us to love our neighbors as ourself.
- 1:39Lord, I pray that you will come and get your glory.
- 1:42Father, help us to be laid down. Lovers crying out Maranatha
- 1:48every day. Come, Lord, come we look up, we
- 1:52see our redemption drawing near. So Father, we wait expectantly.
- 1:59Lord, I pray that you will just continue to wreck us and ravage
- 2:06us with your Shekinah glory coming and filling the temple.
- 2:09Father, we cry out, holy, holy, holy is the Lord God Almighty,
- 2:15worthy is the Lamb that was slain and there was only one
- 2:20found worthy to open the scroll. King Jesus, Holy Spirit, give us
- 2:27discernment. Holy Spirit, guide us as we go
- 2:31through this. Hide me and hide my words and
- 2:34hide my thoughts. And it's all about you, King
- 2:37Jesus, and we love you, and this in your holy and lovely and
- 2:41worthy and mighty name that I pray, Amen.
- 2:47Let's start in verse one. For every high priest taken from
- 2:52among men is ordained for men and things pertaining to God,
- 2:57that he may offer both gifts and sacrifices for sins.
- 3:02So here we're going to get a little introduction to
- 3:05Melchizedek. We're going to get to see the
- 3:08line of Aaron and the high priest there and how Jesus
- 3:12Christ sidestepped that entire line from Aaron.
- 3:16And that is why so many of the Jews had a problem with Jesus
- 3:20claiming that he was who he said he was, because he did not come
- 3:25from the line of Aaron. And you can see that Melchizedek
- 3:28was a priest and a king at the same time, which is why that is
- 3:34the line that Jesus Christ comes through.
- 3:38There's no beginning or there is no end.
- 3:42He has no mother or father. And we're going to get to learn
- 3:45more and more about this Melchizedek character.
- 3:48But Paul, or I should say the writer of Hebrews, has to press
- 3:54the pause button because he realizes that the readers are
- 3:59not able to digest the spiritual meat that he's going to give
- 4:08them, that they're still stuck on the milk as babes, and they
- 4:14have become babes and they refused to mature.
- 4:18But here you need to know a couple things about the high
- 4:22priest. It is that God is the one who
- 4:25puts him in that office. Man doesn't get to choose to be
- 4:30the high priest. Only God can put him there.
- 4:33And it is because he is compassionate with people and
- 4:37that is Jesus Christ as a whole. He is compassionate to those and
- 4:44He's not only just offering the sacrifices for atonement, but
- 4:51He's also giving gifts unto God, which is and are pleasing aroma
- 4:56unto him. Friends too, who can have
- 5:00compassion on the ignorant and on them that are out of the way
- 5:04for that He himself also is compassed with infirmity.
- 5:08That is one of the reasons that Jesus did not come through the
- 5:11line of Aaron. Whenever we're talking about the
- 5:15high priest, this Aaronic ministry of high priest that God
- 5:22had put Aaron into, The reason Jesus did not come through that
- 5:26because he did not need to offer any kind of sacrifice for his
- 5:32own sin. He was sinless, which is why he
- 5:35came through the line of Melchizedek.
- 5:39And you can see that the high priest had his own infirmities.
- 5:44Three and by reason hereof, he ought As for the people, so also
- 5:49for himself to offer for sins. So that is what the writer of
- 5:53Hebrews wants us to know, is that Aaron had to not only offer
- 5:59sacrifices for the people, but also for himself.
- 6:02And Jesus Christ never did. Jesus Christ was perfect and
- 6:07blameless, and Jesus Christ is from eternal, and that is why
- 6:15God Almighty wanted him to be the greatest high priest.
- 6:21And he is not only the high priest, but he's also king of
- 6:25kings. And there were other men, Saul
- 6:29and Isaiah, there were other men who tried to be both king and
- 6:34priest, and God removed them from their positions and struck
- 6:38them with leprosy. So you need to understand here,
- 6:42friends, is that only God can initiate this high priest
- 6:49office. And he was well pleased to give
- 6:52it to Jesus Christ. For no man takes this honor unto
- 6:58himself, but he that is called of God, as was Aaron.
- 7:02So Jesus was well qualified and we're going to see that as Aaron
- 7:08was a sinful man, Jesus was perfect and holy and blameless
- 7:13and innocent, and that is why he came through Melchizedek and not
- 7:17through the line of Aaron. 5 So also Christ glorified not
- 7:22himself to be made a high priest, but he that said unto
- 7:25him, You are my Son. Today I have begotten thee.
- 7:30So God speaking to Christ, and he implements him as the High
- 7:37priest. And that is the way that God
- 7:40would identify who is to be the High Priest.
- 7:43And you can see it, friends, and it is beautiful that Jesus
- 7:47Christ is both King and High priest. 6 As he said.
- 7:53Also in another place, you are a priest forever after the order
- 7:56of Melchizedek. So this interesting character
- 7:59comes on the scene, and as the book of Hebrews unfolds, we're
- 8:03going to go deeper into this character of Melchizedek and who
- 8:07he is, the king of Salem, who is also a priest, who has no mother
- 8:11or father, no beginning or end. And perhaps it's a Christophany.
- 8:16And that is how we are going to approach it as we go through
- 8:19this wonderful book of Hebrews. But before we can go deeper into
- 8:25who Melchizedek is, we must first hit the pause button to be
- 8:32strengthened and for iron to sharpen iron and for us to get
- 8:37off of the spiritual milk and to actually start growing some
- 8:42teeth so we can munch on the T-bone steak of the Old
- 8:47Testament. And that is what you need to
- 8:49understand is that we can't just stay in the Gospels and we can't
- 8:56just stay in the Pauline epistles and we can't just stay
- 9:00in the New Testament. We must after we get done
- 9:03reading Revelation, start in Genesis and start growing some
- 9:07teeth and being able to munch on the spiritual meat that God has
- 9:14for us. Seven.
- 9:19Who in the days of his flesh, when he had offered up prayers
- 9:22and supplications with strong crying and tears unto him that
- 9:26was able to save him from death and was heard in that He feared.
- 9:31So this is Jesus Christ in the Garden of Gethsemane.
- 9:35And here Jesus is asking God if there's any other way to take
- 9:39this cup from him, let it pass from him.
- 9:41But then God heard his prayers and He strengthened him for what
- 9:45was to come, for an all night court scene where he was going
- 9:50to be deprived of sleep and food and water.
- 9:53And he thirsted and they beat him to where he didn't even
- 9:57resemble a man. And they plucked his beard out
- 9:59and spat on his face. They arrested him.
- 10:02He was kissed and betrayed. And then he was flogged and his
- 10:08back ripped open friends. And then he was brutally put
- 10:13onto a cross, a criminal's cross, where the Roman citizens
- 10:18did not even speak of it. It was so heinous an act for a
- 10:23person to be put on the cross. And Jesus Christ, the Son of
- 10:27God, suffered miserably. But God strengthened him for it
- 10:32all. And Satan had bruised his heel,
- 10:37but Jesus Christ is going to crush his head.
- 10:45Though he were a Son, yet he learned obedience by the things
- 10:50which he suffered. Imagine that God Almighty, who
- 10:53spoke everything into existence, everything, bows and obeys to
- 11:00the Word of God, becoming Incarnate as a little baby,
- 11:05fully man and learning obedience.
- 11:10Imagine that fully man and fully God, and He is here on this
- 11:14earth, and the one that everything boughs down to is
- 11:18learning obedience. What an amazing thought. 9 And
- 11:31being made perfect, he became the author of eternal salvation
- 11:35unto all them that obey Him. So if you obey Him, it is a sure
- 11:41marker that you belong to Him and that you have received
- 11:45salvation. Those that are abusing grace are
- 11:50those who don't truly know Him. Our obedience proves the love
- 11:54that we have for Jesus Christ. And here He is the author of our
- 11:59eternal salvation. And He was being made perfect,
- 12:04even though He is perfection. And because He is being made
- 12:08perfect, He makes us perfect in God's sight, Called of God a
- 12:15high priest after the order of Melchizedek.
- 12:18There again, we have seen this character pop up many times, and
- 12:23we're going to clarify who he is as time goes on as we study
- 12:28through this book. But Paul here realizes that he's
- 12:33talking to a group of very immature believers who need to
- 12:39be strengthened and sharpened before they can take on greater
- 12:45understanding. Eleven of whom we have many
- 12:50things to say and hard to be uttered, seeing you are dull of
- 12:54hearing. And this is a dulling, that is a
- 12:59wilful dulling where they do not desire to go deeper.
- 13:04They just want to stay on the surface level and they want to
- 13:07farm out their responsibilities to those who have gone to
- 13:12school. And they forget that God through
- 13:16Jesus Christ turned the entire world right side up with 12
- 13:21unlearned men. And that is why it is such a
- 13:24grave danger to think that it is not our responsibility to teach
- 13:28the Word of God because we didn't go to school for it,
- 13:31because perhaps we are a lawyer or a doctor or a mechanic or
- 13:39whatever office we hold. And we try to just give it away
- 13:44to those that spend their time studying the Word of God and
- 13:48teaching the Word of God. And we need to be more like the
- 13:52Bereans friends and searching the scriptures daily.
- 13:56Let it be the first thing that you do when you wake up.
- 13:59Let it be what you do on your break.
- 14:00Let it be the last thing that you do before you go to bed.
- 14:04And you will be able to rightly divide the Word of God.
- 14:07And it'll be a supernatural indwelling of the Holy Spirit
- 14:11that lets you understand every syllable and every single jot
- 14:15and title that you hold in your hand.
- 14:18And this book is alive and active and sharper than any 2
- 14:21edged sword. It is discerning you, friends.
- 14:25It is a living, breathing Organism.
- 14:28And every single time that you open it up, it's going to show
- 14:31you something new. There are so many gems and
- 14:34jewels inside of this book. And every single time that you
- 14:38study it, God is well pleased to show you layers and more layers
- 14:43of tapestry that's inside of this book.
- 14:45And it's like reading it for the first time.
- 14:48It's fresh and it's new every time that we go through it.
- 14:51And it's like a fine bottle of wine, friends.
- 14:54It only gets better with time. It never gets old and never gets
- 14:57boring. And these recipients of the
- 15:02letter of Hebrews, these were converts from Judaism into
- 15:08Christianity, and they had become dull with all of the
- 15:13spiritual principles. So the writer of Hebrews has to
- 15:18press pause and sharpen them and strengthen them and get them off
- 15:22of the milk and onto the spiritual meat before he can
- 15:26dive deeper in this Melchizedek character. 12 For when for the
- 15:35time you ought to be teachers, you have need that one teach you
- 15:40again, which be the first principles of the oracles of
- 15:44God, and are become such as have need of milk and not of strong
- 15:49meat. The New Testament from Matthew
- 15:53to Revelation is milk. The Old Testament from Genesis
- 15:58to Malachi is meat, and you have to cut your teeth before you can
- 16:03start chewing on meat, friends. But when you get done with
- 16:07Revelation, don't stop there. Turn the page, go back to the
- 16:11beginning and start reading in Genesis.
- 16:14And here the writer of Hebrews gives a strong admonition unto
- 16:20the recipients of this letter and saying, listen, don't become
- 16:23dull. Don't just keep going back to
- 16:28the basics, Actually want to go deeper with God.
- 16:33It's wonderful that you're in the fold.
- 16:36It's wonderful that you're indwelled with the Spirit, but
- 16:40God desires to go deeper so that you feel as if you are able to
- 16:47teach others, which is this beautiful work of God, this
- 16:52discipleship that God desires and He wants us to not only
- 16:57learn it, but to teach it to others. 13 For everyone that
- 17:06uses milk is unskillful in the word of righteousness, for he is
- 17:09a babe. So he continues to be a babe
- 17:12even though God is calling him into maturation friends.
- 17:17And we need to know that it is not good for us just to stay
- 17:22babes and just to stay in the New Testament.
- 17:26We've got to graduate into the Old Testament and read it and
- 17:30earn, learn it and own it, friends, and memorize it and
- 17:35know it like the back of our hands and be students of the
- 17:39Word of God. Take your Bible everywhere with
- 17:43you. Take it to the doctor's office.
- 17:45Take it to the dentist's office, friends, take it on vacation
- 17:49with you. Take it everywhere that you go.
- 17:53Not in a religious sense, but just so if you have idle time,
- 17:57you'll get off of your devices and you'll actually get into the
- 18:01Word of God and actually study the Word of God.
- 18:05If you have extra time on your hands, don't waste it.
- 18:10Actually get into the Word and memorize it and learn it so that
- 18:14you can teach it. And if you want to learn
- 18:17something, get ready to teach it.
- 18:19That is how it will stick. We'll end on 14.
- 18:26But strong meat belongs to them that are full age, even those
- 18:31who by reason of use have their senses exercised to discern both
- 18:36good and evil. That is the plan of God.
- 18:39He desires for you to know the Word and to be able to teach it
- 18:44and to rightly divide it. Friends and the word of God has
- 18:50been used for much evil in this world, to start cults and all
- 18:54kinds of other garbage and people twist it, manipulate it
- 19:01for their own advantage. And that is the way of Satan.
- 19:09He's been doing it since the Garden of Eden.
- 19:11And the best way to safeguard ourselves from those who want to
- 19:15use God's words to deceive us is by knowing it for ourselves so
- 19:21that we are not deceived. And then helping others to grow.
- 19:26Helping others to learn how to read the Word of God and study
- 19:31the Word of God and rightly divide the Word of God, and to
- 19:35discern both good and evil, which is if you go back to the
- 19:38garden. So what he was talking about the
- 19:42tree of both good, of the knowledge of both good and evil.
- 19:47Friends, it's not just the knowledge of evil, it is also
- 19:51the knowledge of good that leads many people astray because they
- 19:57are too trusting in the ravenous wolves in sheep's clothing.
- 20:03We need to be on guard, friends, from the apostasy, the false
- 20:07teachers, the false prophets who only want to sell us prosperity.
- 20:16And they want to manipulate the masses so that they can take
- 20:21advantage of them. And here this is a wonderful
- 20:27reason why Paul, or I should say the writer of Hebrews, had to
- 20:33press pause to strengthen his readers before he took them
- 20:40deeper into the things of God. And that is the call for us as
- 20:44well, to not become dull and to not just take the Bible for
- 20:50granted and to not just sit and be Pew warmers Sunday to Sunday.
- 20:56And not to just be so incredibly trusting of the people who look
- 21:03the part, but are teaching doctrines that are completely
- 21:07contrary to the context of the fullness of God's Word from
- 21:14Genesis to Revelation. Nothing added and nothing
- 21:18subtracted. There are many people who say
- 21:21the Bible plus another publication, the Bible Plus one
- 21:27of the books that didn't make it in, the Bible minus some of the
- 21:33things that aren't relevant for today, the Bible minus some of
- 21:38the culturally unacceptable things that we're dealing with.
- 21:44And they leave it out on purpose, and they try to
- 21:48intermingle the world in the profane with the pure.
- 21:56And it doesn't work that way. And we would do well to
- 22:00safeguard ourselves against all of the false teachings.
- 22:08And we also need to know that it is not enough for us just to
- 22:13learn it for ourselves, but we must be those who desire to help
- 22:18others, to learn how to study the Word of God and to not look
- 22:24at it as too overwhelming. But if you have extra time, you
- 22:33get into the Word of God. You don't just use it for idle
- 22:38chatter and idle time. That is not profitable for all
- 22:42of eternity. That is the call that's been
- 22:45placed on our lives. I hope you've been blessed by
- 22:48this amazing chapter in God's Word.
- 22:52I know I sure have. Praying for you.
- 22:59I love you. So does God.
- 23:07We'll see you back here tomorrow.
- 23:09God bless you.
