- 0:24Speaker 1: service by the Equitable Life Assurance Society of the United
- 0:28Speaker 1: States and the Equitable Society's representative in your community. Are
- 0:41Speaker 1: you one of the fifty million Americans covered by Social Security?
- 0:46Speaker 1: If so, have you any clear idea of your rights
- 0:49Speaker 1: and benefits under Social Security? Well, there may be a
- 0:53Speaker 1: pleasant surprise in store for you, for in a few
- 0:56Speaker 1: minutes you will learn from our sponsor, the Equitable Life
- 0:59Speaker 1: ah Duran Society of the United States, how easy it
- 1:03Speaker 1: is to build Social Security into full security. Tonight's FBI
- 1:17Speaker 1: file The Careless Kidnappers.
- 1:35Speaker 2: The business of crime in America is experiencing the greatest
- 1:39Speaker 2: boom in the history of the nation. It has no
- 1:43Speaker 2: problem of manpower, for today one out of every twenty
- 1:47Speaker 2: three persons in America has an arrest record, and it
- 1:51Speaker 2: has no problem of raw materials for its raw materials
- 1:55Speaker 2: or potential victims and money. And there's a population of
- 1:59Speaker 2: one hundred forty million people on hand who are making
- 2:02Speaker 2: more money than ever before. Consequently, the wheels of every
- 2:07Speaker 2: branch of crime, including that dealt with into Night's case
- 2:11Speaker 2: from the files of your FBI, are rolling in high
- 2:15Speaker 2: gear and turning out an all time high production volume
- 2:20Speaker 2: of a major crime every seventeen seconds. In other words,
- 2:26Speaker 2: since this program went on the air two and a
- 2:29Speaker 2: half minutes ago, eight major crimes have been committed in
- 2:33Speaker 2: this country. Pearl Bedford was, you might say, one of
- 2:43Speaker 2: the most even tempered persons in all the world. Unpleasant
- 2:47Speaker 2: all the time, and her disposition is being far from
- 2:50Speaker 2: Sweden at the moment by three things. The stifling mid
- 2:54Speaker 2: afternoon heat which is making a furnace of the Chicago apartment,
- 2:58Speaker 2: the sight of her husband sprought on the couch, and
- 3:02Speaker 2: the brassy trumpeting of Satch, an unemployed friend who has
- 3:06Speaker 2: been sharing the apartment. Pearl paces the floor, then suddenly
- 3:10Speaker 2: stops and addresses her husband.
- 3:13Speaker 3: Listen, stupid, Yohannie, I want you to go across the
- 3:17Speaker 3: hall and stuff that bugle down that guy's throat.
- 3:20Speaker 4: Well, when I get tired of it.
- 3:22Speaker 5: He's been blowing his brains out for an hour.
- 3:24Speaker 4: Now, I like him. I don't quit beefing, will you.
- 3:28Speaker 5: I'll stop beefing when you get out and get us
- 3:29Speaker 5: some money.
- 3:30Speaker 4: Don't starve that again?
- 3:31Speaker 5: What are you waiting for?
- 3:32Speaker 6: Her?
- 3:34Speaker 3: Woods are full of suckers with dough, and everybody's getting
- 3:36Speaker 3: their share, everybody but you.
- 3:39Speaker 4: I am not interested in Nichols and dimes.
- 3:42Speaker 5: Oh oh, pardon me.
- 3:45Speaker 4: When I make a score, it's gonna be a big one.
- 3:47Speaker 5: Well, you're not gonna make it laying around up, I
- 3:49Speaker 5: will shut up.
- 3:50Speaker 4: Okay, okay, where are you going? Going in to see stytch?
- 3:53Speaker 4: It's peaceful?
- 3:58Speaker 7: Who's there?
- 3:59Speaker 8: It's me?
- 3:59Speaker 4: Broadway?
- 4:00Speaker 5: What it.
- 4:04Speaker 4: Such?
- 4:05Speaker 9: Yeah?
- 4:05Speaker 4: Play some more? Will you play loud?
- 4:09Speaker 9: You've been rubing again?
- 4:10Speaker 4: Yeah?
- 4:11Speaker 9: What was it this time?
- 4:13Speaker 5: Yeah?
- 4:13Speaker 10: For one thing, Pearl, don't appreciate your efforts on the trumpet, Sutch.
- 4:17Speaker 9: No kidding. Well, look down at the casino. They're paying
- 4:20Speaker 9: hot lips handover seventy five hundred a week for the
- 4:23Speaker 9: same kind of efforts. Seventy five hundred pieces of that
- 4:27Speaker 9: beautiful green stuff.
- 4:29Speaker 4: It's a lot of money every week.
- 4:31Speaker 9: It's a lot of money. Never mind a time limit.
- 4:39Speaker 4: Such.
- 4:40Speaker 10: Yeah, I guess this handa of a character would hate
- 4:44Speaker 10: to stop working, right, man?
- 4:45Speaker 4: Want we can make that kind of dough.
- 4:47Speaker 9: Hey, look, if I was making that kind of money.
- 4:48Speaker 11: I what do you mean you come up with any
- 4:52Speaker 11: idea yet?
- 4:53Speaker 4: We can make a big touch.
- 4:55Speaker 6: Ah.
- 4:56Speaker 4: I think I have got Pearl in here.
- 5:00Speaker 5: What for?
- 5:01Speaker 10: I'm gonna show her how lucky we ata. You've been
- 5:03Speaker 10: playing that trumpet? Oh, will you get a load of
- 5:22Speaker 10: those Bobby sockses out there Broadway?
- 5:24Speaker 3: You're taking a chance parking right in front of the
- 5:27Speaker 3: stage door.
- 5:28Speaker 4: Quit beefing, will you satch?
- 5:29Speaker 11: Yeah?
- 5:30Speaker 4: You sure you're right about hot wits Hanniber playing at
- 5:32Speaker 4: benefit tonight.
- 5:32Speaker 9: Yeah, as soon as he finishes his last show here,
- 5:34Speaker 9: he's going right over to the Lakeside hotel if he
- 5:37Speaker 9: can get through those kids around the door here he came.
- 5:40Speaker 6: Take them.
- 5:43Speaker 4: All right, take the wheel setch make room in the
- 5:45Speaker 4: back seat, Pearl. I'll go get.
- 5:46Speaker 10: Him Hannover, mister Hanniba.
- 5:53Speaker 4: Yeah, I'll see if I can get you away on
- 5:55Speaker 4: in one piece. I beg your pardon. Cars waiting right
- 5:57Speaker 4: over here.
- 5:58Speaker 9: The car.
- 5:58Speaker 4: They'll tell you they were sending somebody from the benefit
- 6:00Speaker 4: to pick you up. No, no, they didn't tell me. No,
- 6:04Speaker 4: not right now, honey, not right now. That's what we're
- 6:06Speaker 4: here for. Come on, hold on to me. Let's say
- 6:09Speaker 4: we can make it in the car. All right, let's go,
- 6:12Speaker 4: Come on it will your kids?
- 6:13Speaker 12: Come on?
- 6:13Speaker 5: And the kids?
- 6:14Speaker 4: Excuse me please?
- 6:15Speaker 13: All right?
- 6:16Speaker 4: Hid In mister Hannover. Yeah, take it away, satch.
- 6:29Speaker 3: Oh brother, I guess you get pretty tired of that
- 6:33Speaker 3: kind of stuff from mister Hannover.
- 6:35Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 6:35Speaker 11: So whoa.
- 6:38Speaker 8: I'm sorry I was in such a hurry to get
- 6:40Speaker 8: in the car. I'm afraid I didn't see it's very
- 6:42Speaker 8: attractive occupant.
- 6:44Speaker 4: This is miss Mason. Mister Hannover, Hello.
- 6:46Speaker 5: Please to meet you.
- 6:47Speaker 4: Are you playing the benefit tonight too, Miss Mason?
- 6:50Speaker 10: Well, yeah, part of the show tonight, mister Hannover, but
- 6:54Speaker 10: not the one at the hotel.
- 6:55Speaker 4: What do you mean?
- 6:57Speaker 10: I mean she has to do with this gun and
- 6:58Speaker 10: decide what you know? Wisconsin is lovely this time the year, Hanniver.
- 7:04Speaker 10: You might get to enjoy.
- 7:05Speaker 4: A little of it. Everything goes all right, that's up
- 7:08Speaker 4: to you.
- 7:22Speaker 2: It was shortly before noon the next morning when a
- 7:25Speaker 2: little man with a big cigar dashed into the Chicago
- 7:28Speaker 2: office of the FBI, where he was ushered into the
- 7:31Speaker 2: presence of Agent and Charge Dixon, and told his story excitedly.
- 7:36Speaker 11: Here's a ransom note, mister Dixon.
- 7:37Speaker 12: It just arrived in the mail about twenty minutes ago,
- 7:40Speaker 12: and I came over with it right away.
- 7:42Speaker 11: I'm glad you did.
- 7:43Speaker 12: They want twenty five thousand dollars. What are we going
- 7:46Speaker 12: to do?
- 7:46Speaker 7: Well, our first concern is the safety of the victim. Now,
- 7:50Speaker 7: you say Hanover got in a car with someone outside
- 7:52Speaker 7: the casino club last night.
- 7:54Speaker 12: Yes, but he didn't show up at the hotel for
- 7:56Speaker 12: the benefit, and that's the last anyone saw of him.
- 7:59Speaker 11: Have any idea who he drove away with.
- 8:01Speaker 12: Well, the man on the stage door heard somebody say
- 8:03Speaker 12: that he had come over to pick Hannover up.
- 8:05Speaker 11: Any description, No, see what kind of card we was.
- 8:09Speaker 12: No, he didn't suspect anybody of anything.
- 8:11Speaker 7: I'll get the ransom note off to Washington by airmail
- 8:14Speaker 7: right away to have it checked for clues.
- 8:16Speaker 12: Well, how about the twenty five thousand.
- 8:17Speaker 7: You are instructed in the note to put an ad
- 8:19Speaker 7: in the local paper letting them know you're willing to
- 8:22Speaker 7: meet their terms.
- 8:23Speaker 12: You mean I'm willing, aren't you?
- 8:25Speaker 2: Yeah?
- 8:26Speaker 7: Yeah, sure, for the sake of mister Hanniver's safety and
- 8:28Speaker 7: to make it possible for us to go directly to.
- 8:30Speaker 11: Work on the case.
- 8:32Speaker 7: Our advice is to meet the ransom terms as quickly
- 8:34Speaker 7: as you can.
- 8:53Speaker 8: Mess.
- 8:55Speaker 4: Mess.
- 8:57Speaker 8: Yeah, that guy inside there playing the trump.
- 9:00Speaker 11: But does he have to do that? Oh, mister Hannover,
- 9:05Speaker 11: he's a fan of yours. He's got a strange way
- 9:07Speaker 11: of showing it.
- 9:09Speaker 5: That's how the snatch happened in the first place.
- 9:11Speaker 4: What do you mean?
- 9:13Speaker 5: He told us how good you were, how much dough
- 9:15Speaker 5: you were making. That's what gave us the idea.
- 9:18Speaker 4: Oh, now I really feel bad.
- 9:20Speaker 8: Look how much longer are you gonna hold me here?
- 9:23Speaker 5: That depends on what A car just stopped outside. I
- 9:28Speaker 5: think you'll get your answer real soon.
- 9:31Speaker 4: Hi, honey, what's the word, Hannover? It looks like you'll
- 9:35Speaker 4: be out of the woods by tomorrow.
- 9:36Speaker 5: Might Oh what do you mean, Budley?
- 9:39Speaker 11: The ad in the paper says they'll pay off. Here's
- 9:41Speaker 11: where you commend, Davey.
- 9:43Speaker 4: Oh, you're going to pick up the dough?
- 9:47Speaker 5: Are you kidding?
- 9:48Speaker 4: Why?
- 9:48Speaker 5: This is your party? Sweetheart? If you think I'm gonna.
- 9:51Speaker 10: Be got up and listen, sa'ch keeps Hannover here. You
- 9:56Speaker 10: and I drive into Chicago tomorrow morning at eleven o'clock.
- 9:58Speaker 10: A woman in a blue dress bring a god, Zeena
- 10:00Speaker 10: will be standing at the perfume counter and Gordon's department store.
- 10:04Speaker 5: I don't get it.
- 10:05Speaker 10: You'll be standing next to her. When she leaves, she'll
- 10:08Speaker 10: accidentally drop her bag. You pick it up and start
- 10:10Speaker 10: after her, But instead of catching.
- 10:11Speaker 8: Up with it, you go out the other way and
- 10:12Speaker 8: bring the bag to me in the.
- 10:13Speaker 5: Car, and there'd be twenty five grand in the bag.
- 10:16Speaker 4: That's right or such?
- 10:19Speaker 5: Are you diff Just follow the sound of those musical notes?
- 10:23Speaker 14: Oh yeah, since you're sure you can trust that brother
- 10:35Speaker 14: of yours in the morning.
- 10:36Speaker 9: Sure reads one hundred percent. Been running a hide out
- 10:39Speaker 9: for three years, never lost the customer.
- 10:41Speaker 10: Okay, to go back inside and write the my letter,
- 10:43Speaker 10: tell them companies coming. Okay, I'll mail it in the
- 10:45Speaker 10: morning in Chicago, Can I commend mister Dixon?
- 11:02Speaker 11: Come ahead, Webb, how djamake out?
- 11:05Speaker 8: I located a couple of the kids who were standing
- 11:07Speaker 8: outside the casino stage door that night, but all they
- 11:10Speaker 8: remembered was a big black sedan.
- 11:12Speaker 11: I see, did you hear from Washington? Yes?
- 11:15Speaker 7: I just received a tele time. A ransom note was
- 11:18Speaker 7: written on cheap stationary that you can get at any
- 11:20Speaker 7: store for a nickel. Handwriting doesn't check with any on
- 11:23Speaker 7: file and there were no fingerprints.
- 11:26Speaker 6: What next?
- 11:27Speaker 7: A ransom money is being picked up in the department
- 11:30Speaker 7: store at eleven o'clock. Yes, at least we'll have a
- 11:32Speaker 7: picture of whoever comes for the money.
- 11:35Speaker 4: How's that?
- 11:36Speaker 7: I've planted Jackson with a camera on a step ladder
- 11:38Speaker 7: a couple of cornors away, as though he's making pictures
- 11:40Speaker 7: for displays.
- 11:41Speaker 8: And he'll get a shot off whoever picks up the bag, right,
- 11:44Speaker 8: And as.
- 11:44Speaker 7: Soon as Hanover is safe, the hunt begins.
- 12:08Speaker 8: Yeah, mister Hanover, how about letting that thing cool off.
- 12:11Speaker 9: I don't stop me now.
- 12:12Speaker 11: I just gotta warmed.
- 12:13Speaker 4: Up a.
- 12:20Speaker 9: High you broadway? You got the money, yep?
- 12:22Speaker 4: Come on, we gotta be moving.
- 12:23Speaker 9: Okay, look what I got. Mister hot lips gave me
- 12:26Speaker 9: his own trumpet.
- 12:27Speaker 4: Hey, that was real generous. If your Hannover generous?
- 12:30Speaker 11: Well what else could I do?
- 12:32Speaker 4: Sad you didn't threaten me.
- 12:33Speaker 9: I never threatened nothing. I just asked the man to
- 12:35Speaker 9: give me his horn for this sort of parting gift,
- 12:38Speaker 9: and he said no. So I started doing a little
- 12:40Speaker 9: whitland with my knife.
- 12:41Speaker 4: Hey, I get it, Hannover. I'll have to blindfold you again.
- 12:45Speaker 8: I'm used to it by now.
- 12:46Speaker 4: Okay, here you go.
- 12:50Speaker 8: That's got it.
- 12:51Speaker 4: That's the time. No, let's get started, Come on sense.
- 12:57Speaker 9: Broadway.
- 12:58Speaker 4: Yeah, I'm about the dove. What about it?
- 13:02Speaker 9: You get the whole twenty five thousand?
- 13:03Speaker 11: Sure, hey, that ain't bad.
- 13:07Speaker 9: Twenty five thousand divided by three? That the night hunk
- 13:11Speaker 9: for me?
- 13:12Speaker 6: Over?
- 13:12Speaker 4: Eight?
- 13:12Speaker 7: JEETU?
- 13:15Speaker 6: Where's Pearl over?
- 13:17Speaker 4: Then a car?
- 13:19Speaker 9: She gonna beef?
- 13:20Speaker 4: Bout?
- 13:20Speaker 9: What about cucking me in.
- 13:22Speaker 11: For a third?
- 13:23Speaker 4: Ah, she ain't gonna beef but nothing.
- 13:25Speaker 9: It doesn't sound like pearl.
- 13:26Speaker 10: Get behind the wheel, sets you drive, We head right
- 13:31Speaker 10: in for Hey, it doesn't matter what good pearl? Well,
- 13:40Speaker 10: what does she care beef?
- 13:42Speaker 13: She's dead.
- 13:58Speaker 1: We will return in just a moment one to tonight's case,
- 14:01Speaker 1: which shows how your FBI helps provide national security.
- 14:06Speaker 11: Now, let's listen in on.
- 14:07Speaker 1: A conversation about social security between a man named Fred
- 14:12Speaker 1: Cameron and his friend, the Equitable Society representative.
- 14:16Speaker 11: Listen, nothing, you've been holding out on me.
- 14:18Speaker 15: Last night that brother in law of mine was bragging
- 14:20Speaker 15: how he was going to retire on a nice, comfortable
- 14:22Speaker 15: income when he got to be sixty five.
- 14:24Speaker 11: That's right, Fred, he is yes, And he said, you
- 14:26Speaker 11: work the whole thing out for him.
- 14:28Speaker 15: You assure him how to make social security and life
- 14:30Speaker 15: insurance dovetail. He said, it was amazing how little it
- 14:33Speaker 15: costs to build social security in a full security.
- 14:36Speaker 1: That's what we Equitable Society representatives are always saying, Well.
- 14:40Speaker 15: Why not say to me, you're supposed to be my friend.
- 14:42Speaker 1: Too, all right, Fred, with your two children ages five
- 14:46Speaker 1: and three, your social security is equivalent to about thirteen
- 14:50Speaker 1: two hundred ten dollars worth of life insurance. And that
- 14:54Speaker 1: makes a mighty good foundation on which to build full security.
- 14:57Speaker 11: I'll say it, guys, let's hear some more.
- 15:00Speaker 1: Yes, Fred, Most Americans are amazed when they find out
- 15:03Speaker 1: what a valuable asset they have in social security, when
- 15:07Speaker 1: they discover how easy it is to build social security
- 15:10Speaker 1: into full security through life insurance. For instance, if you
- 15:15Speaker 1: already own some life insurance, your Equitable Society representative may
- 15:19Speaker 1: be able to show you how only a few dollars
- 15:21Speaker 1: extra per month will give your family complete protection and
- 15:26Speaker 1: assure you a comfortable retirement income through the Equitable Extended
- 15:30Speaker 1: Income Plan. Remember, your social Security benefits vary according to
- 15:35Speaker 1: your age, sorary, and family situation, So why not get
- 15:39Speaker 1: the facts find out exactly what you are entitled to
- 15:43Speaker 1: under Social Security. The government has prepared a special card
- 15:47Speaker 1: that will help you secure this information. To obtain one
- 15:50Speaker 1: of these cards, get in touch with your Equitable Society representative,
- 15:54Speaker 1: or send your name and address on a postcard to
- 15:57Speaker 1: the Equitable Society care of this station. That's e q
- 16:01Speaker 1: U I T A b l E. The Equitable Life
- 16:05Speaker 1: Assurance Society of the United States. And now back to
- 16:16Speaker 1: the FBI file the careless kidnappers.
- 16:34Speaker 2: Through its policy of waiting until the victim is released,
- 16:38Speaker 2: your FBI severely handicaps itself in the task of apprehending
- 16:43Speaker 2: the kidnappers, but the safety of the victim comes first,
- 16:47Speaker 2: and strict adherence to its rule of waiting has meant
- 16:50Speaker 2: in scores of cases the difference between life and death
- 16:55Speaker 2: for the victim. As for the kidnapper, no matter how
- 16:59Speaker 2: much of us art this role of waiting gives him,
- 17:03Speaker 2: the advantage is inevitably lost, for, like any other criminal,
- 17:07Speaker 2: he always leaves one or more traces of his crime,
- 17:11Speaker 2: which in turn lead always to his capture. Released by
- 17:22Speaker 2: his kidnappers shortly after dark in a suburb of Chicago.
- 17:26Speaker 2: The victim Hanover, identified himself to a passing police patrol
- 17:29Speaker 2: and was driven swiftly to the city to FBI headquarters,
- 17:32Speaker 2: where he gave an account of events up to the
- 17:34Speaker 2: time of his release.
- 17:36Speaker 8: I was still blindfolded when they put me out, so
- 17:38Speaker 8: I was unable to get a good description of the car.
- 17:39Speaker 11: I've probably gotten rid of it by now, anyway, But.
- 17:42Speaker 8: The body of that woman was still in the car.
- 17:44Speaker 7: You've probably gotten rid of that too, mister Haniver. To Hanover,
- 17:47Speaker 7: we have a picture here of the woman who picked
- 17:49Speaker 7: up the ransom money. One of our agents snapped it
- 17:52Speaker 7: in the department store. Here is and that's her, all right.
- 17:56Speaker 7: They call a pearl. We haven't been able to identify
- 17:59Speaker 7: it yet with anybody in our files or at police headquarters.
- 18:02Speaker 11: I see web. Yes, got a teletype off to Washington
- 18:05Speaker 11: right away on those.
- 18:06Speaker 4: Nicknames, uh Broadway in satch Yeah.
- 18:08Speaker 11: That's right.
- 18:09Speaker 7: Washington may be able to find something on them and
- 18:11Speaker 7: the nickname file. Right, mister Haniver, you said we might
- 18:18Speaker 7: be able to find the cabin where they held you.
- 18:20Speaker 8: Yeah. They blindfolded me, of course before we got out
- 18:23Speaker 8: of Chicago that night.
- 18:24Speaker 6: Huh.
- 18:24Speaker 8: But after a while the blindfold slipped a bit, and
- 18:27Speaker 8: I remember seeing that we went north after passing through Canoshan.
- 18:30Speaker 11: Yes.
- 18:30Speaker 8: Then they discovered the blindfold had slipped and fixed it back.
- 18:33Speaker 6: Uh.
- 18:34Speaker 8: But about fifteen minutes later we passed over a wooden bridge.
- 18:37Speaker 8: I could hear the planking rattle.
- 18:38Speaker 6: Uh huh.
- 18:39Speaker 8: I got a sudden idea. As soon as we were
- 18:41Speaker 8: off the bridge, I snapped on the second hand on
- 18:43Speaker 8: my wristwatch. Here it's a stopwatch model.
- 18:45Speaker 6: You see.
- 18:45Speaker 8: Oh, yes, we turned right when we stopped at the cabin.
- 18:49Speaker 8: I stopped the watch.
- 18:50Speaker 11: Good.
- 18:51Speaker 8: When they took the blindfold off, I noticed that we
- 18:53Speaker 8: had traveled four minutes and twenty eight seconds from the bridge.
- 18:55Speaker 11: Good for you.
- 18:56Speaker 7: I wish all kidnapped victims would be that alert. Now,
- 19:00Speaker 7: how fast was the car traveling?
- 19:01Speaker 11: Would you say? Well?
- 19:02Speaker 8: Broadway kept warning Satch to hold the speed to thirty
- 19:05Speaker 8: five miles an hour because of the highway police.
- 19:07Speaker 11: Huh hanover.
- 19:09Speaker 7: This may be the lead that helps crack the case
- 19:11Speaker 7: if we can find that cabin.
- 19:27Speaker 4: This is the cabin.
- 19:28Speaker 7: All right, mister Dixon, flash on your leg web right,
- 19:31Speaker 7: let's look around somebody's bomb who have left a fingerprint
- 19:37Speaker 7: or two somewhere around here.
- 19:39Speaker 8: Would they likely be on a drinking glass?
- 19:41Speaker 11: Definitely?
- 19:42Speaker 8: Why, Oh, there's the glass Broadway used to drink whiskey
- 19:45Speaker 8: out of last night.
- 19:47Speaker 11: There's one here.
- 19:48Speaker 7: Yeah, oh that light closer. Okay, look at them, Yes,
- 19:54Speaker 7: three clear prints. We'll get those, all right, Well, put
- 19:58Speaker 7: your hand inside the glass.
- 20:00Speaker 11: It's steady. I just get this powder and this tape art.
- 20:04Speaker 8: How do you take the prince.
- 20:06Speaker 7: They'll cover them with dusting powder. Take a strip of
- 20:10Speaker 7: this lifting tape, stick it down over the dusted prints,
- 20:17Speaker 7: and peel the tape off.
- 20:19Speaker 8: Oh, the impression of the prince is on the table. Yes,
- 20:23Speaker 8: it's uh writing tablet here on the table.
- 20:26Speaker 4: Look at the paper.
- 20:28Speaker 11: Yes, it looks like the same kind the ransom note
- 20:30Speaker 11: was written.
- 20:31Speaker 8: On the inside of the cover. Is a blotter too, Look,
- 20:33Speaker 8: it's been used yet. The one called Satch wrote a
- 20:35Speaker 8: letter on the tablet last night. Broadway was gonna mail
- 20:37Speaker 8: it in Chicago this morning.
- 20:38Speaker 7: Hey, give me that mirror web okay, yeah.
- 20:43Speaker 11: Ah see if we can make out those blotted letters
- 20:48Speaker 11: have two Hi, doubt with you.
- 20:57Speaker 7: For a.
- 21:00Speaker 8: I guess he means for a while. That looks like
- 21:03Speaker 8: part of an address down a little father.
- 21:05Speaker 6: Uh huh.
- 21:07Speaker 11: In the moy in Iowa. I can't make out the rest.
- 21:12Speaker 8: Oh that's enough to start us on our way to
- 21:14Speaker 8: the Moy though.
- 21:14Speaker 7: Right, well, let's get back to Chicago first and see
- 21:16Speaker 7: if we can identify these prints.
- 21:29Speaker 9: Hey, yeah, you see my trumpet.
- 21:33Speaker 4: It's out of the couch.
- 21:35Speaker 11: What you're doing there?
- 21:36Speaker 10: I put it there? Why I couldn't take any more
- 21:40Speaker 10: of that plane? You just don't like music, not that
- 21:43Speaker 10: kind of music.
- 21:44Speaker 9: You're unhappy because you got lots of money and you
- 21:46Speaker 9: can't get outside to spend it.
- 21:48Speaker 4: Yeah, maybe that's it.
- 21:51Speaker 9: How long do you think we ought to stay here
- 21:52Speaker 9: with my brother until it heats off? How long will
- 21:56Speaker 9: that take?
- 21:56Speaker 4: Another ten days or so?
- 21:58Speaker 11: It's a long time.
- 22:01Speaker 9: I wish I had my Hanover records out here, so
- 22:03Speaker 9: it'd have something to play against it.
- 22:05Speaker 4: That's all we need.
- 22:06Speaker 11: Wait a minute, just doing as something.
- 22:09Speaker 4: What the radio?
- 22:10Speaker 9: They should be playing them on one of the stations
- 22:12Speaker 9: out here, Hi, give me my trumpet.
- 22:26Speaker 4: Teletype? Just then from Washington, mister Dixon.
- 22:29Speaker 7: Thanks. Oh, here's the works web. The frinds on the
- 22:33Speaker 7: glass belong to Joseph Bedford, extortionist swindler. Yes, and the nickname.
- 22:38Speaker 7: Report says Bedford's nickname is Broadway. Good as for the
- 22:42Speaker 7: nickname Satch, the only one on record belongs to a
- 22:45Speaker 7: man named Johnson who works with.
- 22:47Speaker 11: Broadway Joe Bedford.
- 22:49Speaker 8: Well, what's our next move?
- 22:50Speaker 7: First, let's take a look around in bedford Chicago apartment.
- 22:53Speaker 7: Here's his last known address. Maybe Satch live there too, right,
- 22:56Speaker 7: and then we'll head for des Moines.
- 23:08Speaker 11: What luck Web, Well.
- 23:10Speaker 8: I've calmed all the record stores here in des moin Dixon,
- 23:12Speaker 8: and nobody answering Satch's description has bought any Hanover recording.
- 23:16Speaker 7: I don't understand that it must have been released one
- 23:18Speaker 7: hundred Hanover records in his Chicago room.
- 23:21Speaker 11: It's essentially they have gone under here somewhere.
- 23:23Speaker 8: If only the rest of that address had.
- 23:25Speaker 5: Come off on the blodder.
- 23:26Speaker 7: Well, anyway, the photos of Broadway and Satch arrived here
- 23:29Speaker 7: by air a little while ago. We won't have any
- 23:31Speaker 7: trouble identifying them. When we didn't find it that an idea.
- 23:34Speaker 8: Hanovers said, wherever we found Satch, we'd find him playing
- 23:38Speaker 8: that trumpet. Yes, and he's got to have a recording
- 23:41Speaker 8: to play against. And for Satch, it's got to be
- 23:43Speaker 8: a Hanover recording.
- 23:44Speaker 11: He hasn't bought any here.
- 23:45Speaker 8: Maybe he wouldn't have to buy any what it's a
- 23:48Speaker 8: long chance, but it's one worth trying, and it just
- 23:51Speaker 8: might pay off for us too.
- 24:04Speaker 12: Well.
- 24:04Speaker 13: So much for swoon light Sinatra folks, and now all
- 24:07Speaker 13: of you bugle bugs gets up with some blazing blasts
- 24:10Speaker 13: from a tar trumpet, because here's a request recording by
- 24:13Speaker 13: Hot Lips handle.
- 24:14Speaker 9: That's my boy, Broadway. Drop the needle and give us
- 24:17Speaker 9: a downbeat son, Sad.
- 24:25Speaker 4: I throw a little bride money at you. Sat listen
- 24:31Speaker 4: to me, will you, Sad?
- 24:36Speaker 11: You say something?
- 24:37Speaker 9: Broadway.
- 24:39Speaker 11: I'll give you fifty bucks for that trumpet.
- 24:41Speaker 9: Hey, look his horn as a Hot Lips handover original.
- 24:44Speaker 14: Remember, Okay, hijacker, I'll give you fifty bucks to stop
- 24:49Speaker 14: playing just my fire.
- 24:52Speaker 7: Cut off that radio's the idea I had to break
- 24:55Speaker 7: up the party boys. But we're special agents at the FBI.
- 24:57Speaker 7: What we're both under arrest for kidnapping. There's an extra
- 25:00Speaker 7: charge of murder for you, Bedford a car with your
- 25:03Speaker 7: wife's body and it was just.
- 25:04Speaker 11: Found a while ago. Okay, how'd you find us?
- 25:08Speaker 7: We figured since you didn't bring any Hanover recordings with you.
- 25:11Speaker 7: And since you didn't buy any in the mone you
- 25:13Speaker 7: might be requesting some to be.
- 25:15Speaker 11: Played in the recording broadcast.
- 25:16Speaker 9: Hmm.
- 25:17Speaker 11: And when your call came in, we had it traced
- 25:19Speaker 11: here to your brother's house.
- 25:20Speaker 4: Give me that horned setchy the cop broad Way.
- 25:23Speaker 9: What are you gonna go Broadway?
- 25:27Speaker 6: You won't be needing it anyway.
- 25:43Speaker 2: Well their crime of kidnapping. Joseph Bedford and Robin Johnson
- 25:47Speaker 2: are serving life terms in a federal penitentiary. Bedford was
- 25:51Speaker 2: not tried for the murder of his wife inasmuch as
- 25:54Speaker 2: she was her husband's accomplice in crime, and he has
- 25:56Speaker 2: received a life sentence anyway for kidnapping. Although fewer kidnappings
- 26:01Speaker 2: are committed than any other major crime, their number has
- 26:05Speaker 2: increased proportionately with the alarming upsurge of crime in America.
- 26:10Speaker 2: According to mister j Edgar Hoover, director of the Federal
- 26:13Speaker 2: Bureau of Investigation, crime has increased thirteen percent in the
- 26:18Speaker 2: last six months as compared with the corresponding period last year.
- 26:23Speaker 2: In a crime survey just compiled by your FBI, we
- 26:27Speaker 2: find larceny up nine point eight percent, aggravated assault ten percent,
- 26:34Speaker 2: auto theft fifteen point five percent, burglary seventeen percent, negligent
- 26:43Speaker 2: manslaughter nineteen point two percent, murder twenty eight point five percent,
- 26:51Speaker 2: and robberies have increased thirty one point eight percent. These
- 26:57Speaker 2: are startling figures, but call for a doubling of effort
- 27:01Speaker 2: on the part of all of us so that this
- 27:04Speaker 2: present crime wave shall not become a tidal wave engulfing you.
- 27:11Speaker 2: The American people.
