- 0:19Yeah, speaking of, before we get into this, like two or three weeks ago, we were talking
- 0:25about because you have these excellent handwritten almost like study notes that you're doing walking
- 0:31through page by page the big book and all you have to do sir is take a picture of those notes slap
- 0:38them into ai let it transcribe it for you maybe clean it up and then post it to the website man
- 0:43we need this cory we need this all right anyway carry on but we have a website and eventually we'll
- 0:51have other stuff on it and uh but we got pastor mike stuff if you ever want to read this to not
- 0:57just hear what we're talking about because you know for me i think you know when i read things
- 1:02i can you know we talked about this before right you uh you retain 10 of the stuff you listen to
- 1:09you retain 30 or percent of the stuff you read yeah but you also you retain like 90 of the stuff
- 1:16you teach and talk about it. So, you know, I don't know. Yeah. But anyway, so today is July 14th.
- 1:23Humility that sustains the stone. Humility brings balance and steadiness to my life.
- 1:29Ripple one practical. Today, I will not let my problems take over my thinking.
- 1:34When frustration rises, I will step back and shift my focus. I'll remind myself that my
- 1:40perspective, not just my situation, needs adjustment. Ripple 2 Spiritual. The Father
- 1:46uses humility to steady my heart. Jesus shows me the strength is not found in control, but in
- 1:52surrender. The Holy Spirit lifts my focus off myself and places it back on God. As I ask for
- 2:01humility, I find that peace begins to return, and my life regains its balance. And you know,
- 2:07when I was reading this just now,
- 2:10it says I'll remind myself
- 2:13that my perspective,
- 2:16you know,
- 2:16I think about perspective
- 2:18and we talk a lot about this
- 2:19and it's in this big book
- 2:21countless,
- 2:22countless times
- 2:22and it's talking about,
- 2:23like I think about
- 2:24how it's talking about attitude
- 2:26because,
- 2:26you know,
- 2:27we've talked about how the plane
- 2:28and I don't know,
- 2:30have we talked about this before?
- 2:32In a plane,
- 2:33there's a measure
- 2:34and it's because the attitude
- 2:37it's not the altitude
- 2:39it's the attitude
- 2:41and it's your position
- 2:43on of like where you're at
- 2:46so it's like
- 2:47your perception
- 2:49so attitude back then
- 2:51this is more in the 1930s definition
- 2:53of attitude but it's pretty much
- 2:55your perspective and attitude
- 2:57in this big book is in here
- 2:59I think it is 26
- 3:01times if I'm not mistaken
- 3:03maybe 27
- 3:05but it's in so many different places and it's oh it where is it at it's uh i was looking for it on
- 3:11page 19 so it says most of us sense that real tolerance of other people's shortcomings and
- 3:17viewpoints and a respect for their opinions or attitudes which make us more useful to others
- 3:24and so i think about my attitude and how it can be more useful well at my home usually it's keeping
- 3:29my mouth shut and listening and i think about the saint francis prayer right and i don't like
- 3:35memorize the whole prayer even though i you got that thing tattooed on your back i got that song
- 3:41yeah i got that prayer tattooed on my back yeah it's not i don't i wish i put it on the front side
- 3:46so i could actually know what it says yeah um but you know instead of being under you know
- 3:51understand instead of being understood you know love instead of being loved man i've always wanted
- 3:56to have, not always. Today I try not to seek that, but I try to love instead of trying to be loved.
- 4:03And that's such a big thing for me because when I'm doing that, man, I get abundances of love.
- 4:11Of course, yeah.
- 4:11Right. And, you know, so that, like, you know, I used to just beg for attention. And, you know,
- 4:16we kind of talked about the last one, you know, but I've always wanted that attention. And then
- 4:20And when I give it to others, I get that back.
- 4:23And I don't have to even do that in a motive way.
- 4:27It's just out of love.
- 4:28And what were you thinking?
- 4:29Well, I mean, what you were saying about that just now, you know, thinking about love, is that when I am loving others and not expecting to be loved in return, I feel probably one of the greatest loves in return.
- 4:41And that's the love of God, you know, because when I'm being a service to somebody, there's something magical, mystical, spiritual that happens, you know, within me that.
- 4:50that makes me feel complete, you know, makes me feel at peace.
- 4:54That's that comfort, you know, the comfort and presence of God is nothing more than feeling God's love in my life today.
- 5:01And that kind of agape love, as it's called, you know, from a theological perspective,
- 5:09is way more fulfilling than any type of eros love, you know,
- 5:15which is the type, you know, typically between people who are in a loving romantic,
- 5:20kind of the romantic love is that eros love, you know.
- 5:23Right.
- 5:24And that is fulfilling and sustaining to a certain extent.
- 5:28But that agape love, that comfort that I have knowing that, as Scripture teaches me,
- 5:32you know, nothing can separate us from the love of God through Jesus Christ, you know.
- 5:37And that's where I get a lot of the comfort,
- 5:40And that's what allows me to be of service to others, regardless of how they react or respond to that.
- 5:48You know, because I'm not, I'm not, while yes, I'm doing something for someone, I'm not doing it for them either, if that makes sense.
- 5:55You know what I mean?
- 5:56Like, I'm doing it because that's what I'm led to do.
- 6:00You know, it's an act of love and service.
- 6:04But in terms of, you know, the thought about humility, you know, in Proverbs 29, verse 23, and this is the New King James Version, it says,
- 6:13A man's pride will bring him low, but the humble in spirit will retain honor.
- 6:18And I think about that because when I am, that sustenance that I get is from that agape love of God that I receive.
- 6:27But it's also from knowing that, you know, I have that integrity, that honor that the scripture called it.
- 6:33You know, not the honor of others, but just to back up a little bit.
- 6:40In biblical times, it was very much a shame and honor culture in society.
- 6:45And the only way back then, according to their thinking, is honor, you might say, was in a limited quantity.
- 6:53So for you, Corey, to gain honor, you had to take it from somebody else.
- 6:57You had to shame somebody else in order for you to gain honor.
- 7:01And so when I think about honor, I'm not thinking about that type of honor.
- 7:06I'm not thinking about the type of honor that requires me to take it from somebody else,
- 7:10because the honor that I have is the honor that's God given.
- 7:13You know, it's the honor of knowing that I'm a man who can stand, you know, face to face
- 7:17before anybody with integrity, knowing that I have tried to do the right thing.
- 7:23And I can't do that if today I do let my problems take over my thinking.
- 7:29I can't do that if today I do let frustration rise.
- 7:33And that's why, you know, our practical ripple today is saying, I'll not let my problems take
- 7:38over my thinking.
- 7:40And that when frustration rises, I will step back and shift my focus.
- 7:44And it's because if I'm being self-serving and I'm acting that way and I'm acting not
- 7:52from a place of humility, but from a place of pride, then I'm probably acting shamefully.
- 7:58Right.
- 7:59you know where i was thinking about this humility thing since we've been talking about it a bunch and
- 8:06so if everything's god right and you know our book a lot or the book of alcoholics anonymous and i'm
- 8:12sure the bible does as well but if i think about everything being god and it says when we became
- 8:18alcoholics crushed by self-imposed crisis we could not postpone or evade we had to fiercely face the
- 8:23proposition that either god is everything or he is nothing right and so when i think about humility you
- 8:29humility being God.
- 8:31So, like, I think, you know,
- 8:33I've been talking to you a little bit about this book,
- 8:35William James, Varieties of
- 8:37Religious Experiences.
- 8:39Right. There was a lot of, uh,
- 8:40and it,
- 8:42it says, um, on page one,
- 8:44I know people aren't going to go look this up, but if you got the book,
- 8:47it's cool if you want to.
- 8:48But it says, seek not to be happy,
- 8:50but rather to escape unhappiness.
- 8:53Strong happiness is always
- 8:55linked with pain.
- 8:57Therefore, hug the safe shore and do not tempt the deeper raptures.
- 9:01Avoid disappointment by expecting little and aiming low.
- 9:05And above all, do not fret.
- 9:07The only genuine good that life can yield a man is the free possession of his own soul.
- 9:14All other good are lies.
- 9:17You know, I think about what that's saying.
- 9:18And, you know, I think about what God, like, you know, what I was talking about bad.
- 9:24And, you know, this book also talks about, you know, no profound thing happens in 98 degree temperature.
- 9:29When I have a 98 degree temperature, right?
- 9:31And then, you know, because, you know, having a fever back then was really big.
- 9:35Yeah.
- 9:35Yeah.
- 9:35It was like, yeah, very much life or death.
- 9:38So, like, in their view at that time, and, you know, that book was written in, like, 1910 or 19-something or in there.
- 9:45And, you know, it's a bunch of different religious experiences about dudes in the 1800s.
- 9:51But what they're, you know, what they're saying is like the profound experience has happened when you got a hundred and three hundred and four degree temperature.
- 9:59And, you know, so I like when my back's against the wall, when I'm sitting in, you know, different positions I've been in, you know, but like that's when, you know, God really comes in.
- 10:10And, you know, I think I can't think of the verse, but I know that that's kind of what I can't think of the right wording for the verses.
- 10:17but it was talk about, you know, when we're empty inside, that's when God comes in. And so when these
- 10:23moments of like bad come in and bring me down to a state of humility, that's when God comes in and
- 10:30lets me do his work at the most optimal level, I think. And that's kind of what I was thinking about
- 10:34some humility stuff. But also, I like how you put in here, when frustration rises, I will step back
- 10:42and shift my focus. And I was thinking about, right, that that flip in between continue to watch
- 10:47and pause when agitated.
- 10:48And, you know, so I'll shift my focus on what?
- 10:50Probably somebody else.
- 10:52Let me think about somebody else instead of me for a minute
- 10:55and shift my focus and let, you know,
- 10:57because I think what happens is, right,
- 10:59when I shift my focus on somebody else and not me,
- 11:02God comes and takes care of this problem
- 11:04and I don't have to deal with it
- 11:05because I've been dealing with it
- 11:06and put my fingers all in it
- 11:07and it just blows up every time.
- 11:10So, you know, God, you know, I think, you know,
- 11:11that's the whole, that was my whole,
- 11:13I liked how you put that shift my focus
- 11:15and I will remind myself that my perspective, not just my situation, needs adjustment.
- 11:22Well, when I'm flying the plane that is my life, if I'm in a nosedive, I can't even see the horizon.
- 11:30Right.
- 11:31Right.
- 11:31If I'm aiming for the sky, shooting straight up, I can't see the horizon.
- 11:36I'm just lost in the clouds.
- 11:38Right.
- 11:38But when I'm flying straight and steady, when I maintain a steady attitude, taking it back to your term that you taught us earlier, and I looked it up, and he says the attitude in aviation is the orientation of an aircraft relative to the Earth's horizon.
- 11:53Right.
- 11:53Well, if I'm in a nosedive going too low or if I'm going too high, I can't even see the horizon.
- 11:58Right.
- 11:59So I have to adjust my attitude.
- 12:00Right.
- 12:01So that was a great object lesson for the day, Corey.
- 12:04That was really good.
- 12:05Well, I appreciate you bringing that in.
- 12:07I don't know we're kind of going over, but that's okay.
- 12:09On page 52 in the big book, right?
- 12:12It kind of points to this, and this is one of the beginning.
- 12:16I'm just, you know, I was thinking about this just right when you said that.
- 12:19So it says we had to ask ourselves why we shouldn't apply to our human problems.
- 12:26And human problems I've been messing with my whole life.
- 12:29Everything.
- 12:29You know what I mean?
- 12:30Let me put my hands in this, the job, the girl, the house, the whatever, the kids, whatever I can.
- 12:36I was definitely not Midas.
- 12:38Everything that I touched was not turning to gold.
- 12:40It was turning to something brown and putrid.
- 12:42Go look at my record.
- 12:45But it says the same readiness to change our point of view.
- 12:51Yeah.
- 12:51So like instead of me, because I've been focused on this my whole life.
- 12:54We were kind of talking about something and, you know, how well did it work that way?
- 13:00And like we were talking about this dude that's broken, you know.
- 13:03And, you know, so how well has it worked so far?
- 13:05Exactly. And, you know, I think I come in, I, I, I, maybe, I don't know what it was. Maybe I was
- 13:11broken enough not to argue with anybody about this stuff, but I didn't have argument of God or,
- 13:18you know, I mean, it was, it was just late. This stuff was laid out in front of me. I was like,
- 13:22Hey, you want to do this or not? And I didn't have an argument about coming into this anonymous
- 13:28thing saying, Oh, I don't want to believe God. He's like, I, I mean, I think I told you, but I was
- 13:34sitting in jail with a large bond.
- 13:40And a dude in my cell had a Bible and a dude across the hall had a Quran.
- 13:47And one of the guys asked me and said, Hey, do you want, do you want this Bible?
- 13:51And I said, man, the other dude asked me if I wanted the Quran.
- 13:54And I said, man, I'll read whatever we'll get this bond down so I can get out and go
- 13:57see my son.
- 13:59So anyways, absolutely.
- 14:01Well, Corey, that was a good place to stop.
- 14:04Why don't you close us out with our prayer for today?
- 14:07Father, give me the gift of humility today.
- 14:10Through Your Holy Spirit, lift my focus off myself and restore balance in my life.
- 14:16Shape my heart through the examples of Jesus and lead me into peace and serenity.
- 14:21Amen.
- 14:23Amen.
