- 0:13You are listening to Look Who's Talking. I am
- 0:18Cameron Minter and our host with the most is
- 0:23Jessica Coffie Dickerson. So you're going to
- 0:29do that? Yes, I'm going to do that. They didn't
- 0:32even know I got engaged. Yes, they did. The last
- 0:36show, we found out. Well, now I'm a married woman.
- 0:40Yeah. It's been a month. She's married now. I'm
- 0:43married now. It's been a whole month. A whole
- 0:46month. A month since we changed. A month. Yes.
- 0:51Love, just love, just bliss. Oh, no, it wasn't.
- 0:54Yes, it was. It's just blissful, blissful, blissful.
- 0:57To him, yes. Towards him, yes. But the whole
- 1:00planning process. Yeah, yeah. I would never in
- 1:03life. Well. I'm glad I don't have to do it again.
- 1:06Yeah, because. But I would never do it again.
- 1:08You already went over that. We understand that
- 1:11process. No, go to the courthouse. Oh, lies you
- 1:14tell, lies you tell. Kim, was I a beautiful bride?
- 1:18Yes. Fantastically beautiful. The bride to be.
- 1:23No, the bride has already been. Right. I'm sorry.
- 1:27I was trying to get my music right. Oh, okay.
- 1:29Yeah. So, for my picture, was it the wedding
- 1:36that you thought I would have? You know what?
- 1:38I haven't thoroughly looked. I haven't thoroughly
- 1:42looked. I haven't thoroughly looked. There's
- 1:44been a lot going on in my little life here, but.
- 1:47Uh -huh. I did check you out. You was looking
- 1:50good. Thank you. I did not get to see the decorations
- 1:53and all of that. Are you serious? I'm serious.
- 1:57I know to look for it. So, you know, I had selfie
- 2:00booths. Yeah, there were three selfie booths
- 2:05and four opportunities to take pictures. Look
- 2:08at you. I loved it because all of our guests
- 2:11were up. They were moving. We have food trucks.
- 2:16Oh, my gosh. You declined my invitation. No,
- 2:22no. Life got real serious. But I'm so happy for
- 2:27you. Thank you. I'm so glad you didn't mess this
- 2:30up for us. I'm so thankful that you didn't mess
- 2:33this up for us. I did not. It was a lovely day.
- 2:36But again, I'll never do it again. Very good.
- 2:39Very good. Once in my life. Yeah, that's you.
- 2:43Oh, we should have went to the courthouse. No.
- 2:46But I am not in debt. Mama and daddy is not having
- 2:49that. Oh, they are not. And guess what? They
- 2:52had such a good time. I'm sure. Yeah. So they
- 2:55were meeting like the day before we had this
- 2:59tailgate at Keeneland, right? It was an I do
- 3:02tailgate. And like a lot of my out of town guests.
- 3:06came to you know i said i'll dress like the derby
- 3:10like people got into it however my my well my
- 3:15dad he got into it but he's not necessarily a
- 3:18people person he didn't realize how many people
- 3:22like from work and up this way he would have
- 3:25to meet because to him i'm just just just jessica
- 3:29yeah i just don't know but i've lived now i live
- 3:33i've lived more time in Lexington than I did
- 3:37in Paducah. So, yeah, they met everyone that
- 3:41wanted to introduce, shake hands. I hope you
- 3:44tagged your parents in the social media because
- 3:47I'm going to tell them to start listening to
- 3:48the show. No, they are not on social media. How
- 3:50can I get to them? They are 71 and 72. They are
- 3:54not on social media. And if they get on it, that's
- 3:57when I will get off. Oh, wow. It's so wow. Yeah.
- 4:01Wow. We we have strict rules. Listen, tell everybody
- 4:07your husband's name. Why? So they can look. No,
- 4:11I'm just that's right. It's time to look them
- 4:13up. It's time to check them out. His name is
- 4:15Desmond Desmond. And he's a mortician. Yes. Yes.
- 4:20So I deal with, you know, the beginning of life
- 4:24for occupation. And he lives with the end of
- 4:28life. Yeah. So y 'all meet in the middle. Yes,
- 4:30we meet in the middle. Meet in the middle. That's
- 4:32perfect. Well, congratulations. I'm so happy
- 4:36for you. It's been fun. I just knew you were
- 4:39going to ask me this one thing. Yeah, I'm going
- 4:41to ask you this. Oh, okay. I'm ready for it.
- 4:44You ready? I think I know the question you're
- 4:45going to ask. Okay. Well, there are so many questions
- 4:50I want to ask, but I'm going to just do one on
- 4:51this show. Okay. Okay. Have you talked about
- 4:54what you're going to do? That's not the question
- 4:58I thought you were going to ask. I thought you
- 5:01were going to ask. See, I know that one. What
- 5:03is the one thing after you've gotten married
- 5:06that you're just like. Yeah. Yeah. Well, let's
- 5:10go there then. Yeah. What is it? Him like leaving
- 5:16just things in the shower. What? Why is this
- 5:21rag there? Yes, welcome to the rest of your life.
- 5:27If you've used that bar of soap, throw it away.
- 5:31Throw it away? Yeah. You a one and done soap
- 5:35bar? No, but I'm saying it's not even a bar at
- 5:39this point. It's a flat piece of paper. Oh my
- 5:43goodness. Yeah, yeah. Why do you not just throw
- 5:47it away? Welcome to life living with a man that's
- 5:50not a woman. That part. But since we've been
- 5:54married, I have not had to wash clothes or fold
- 5:58them up yet. Oh, you got a good one. I got a
- 6:02good one. That's good. That's good. Now, what
- 6:06was the question you were really going to ask?
- 6:07It was just going to be about Christmas. Have
- 6:10you discussed Christmas or are you under the
- 6:13illusion that just because you've done Christmas
- 6:15over Mama's house all your life, that that's
- 6:17what's going to happen? You know what? We haven't
- 6:20talked about Christmas. See, that's going to
- 6:22be a problem. You just got months. I mean, we
- 6:24kind of talked about it this year when we weren't
- 6:26married. Uh -huh. But. Yeah. Trust me. Every
- 6:31holiday is going to be an issue. No, it's not
- 6:34because I don't even like driving home for the
- 6:37holiday. It's no longer about you. Well, I hope
- 6:41that we can create. Yes. Now that is. Driving
- 6:45for hours. That is the best. Is that my thing?
- 6:50I mean, I don't want to sound bad. No, I understand
- 6:54what you're saying. That's exactly what we do.
- 6:55We want to make our own memory. That's right.
- 6:57Yeah. However, that means they're coming to you.
- 7:00No, they're not. Very good. Very good. Everybody's
- 7:03coming to your house. They will stay in Paducah.
- 7:05We'll go the week before, maybe. If not, I'll
- 7:08ship them their gifts. Sounds like a plan. That's
- 7:11not going to work. But you know what? My family,
- 7:16they're real. They're cool. They're like, oh,
- 7:21are y 'all coming here? It's not just your family.
- 7:26His family lives here. It's his family. His family's
- 7:29going to want to spend time together. Just trust
- 7:32me. We'll talk about it again. New Year. We'll
- 7:35talk about it in New Year. Yeah, of course. That's
- 7:39coming up. I see some head shaking going on.
- 7:41I've got some folks that agree. Oh, my gosh.
- 7:44You have a pin again. That's right. All right.
- 7:47So, you know what? I think it's time for Coffie
- 7:52Break. You know, it's been so long, I wasn't
- 7:56for sure if that button was going to work. All
- 8:06righty. So for today's Coffie break, I want to
- 8:09say a quote from Mark Twain. Mark Twain? Yes.
- 8:15Give every day the chance to become the most
- 8:19beautiful day in your life. So there are plenty
- 8:23of times where the days just might not pan out
- 8:27to your ideal day. But that doesn't mean it has
- 8:32to be the worst day. That's right. You kind of
- 8:35choose how you want your day to be. You know,
- 8:38it's always refreshing to say, I know I'm going
- 8:42through this, but someone's going through something
- 8:44else. Right, right. And then when we compare
- 8:48what we're going through to what someone else
- 8:51is going through, you become grateful. Yeah,
- 8:54it just doesn't add up. You know what I'm saying?
- 8:58And it's always important to keep your mind on,
- 9:02you know, Yeah, you're going through, but you're
- 9:06going to make it. It can always be worse. It
- 9:09can definitely always be worse. It can deal with
- 9:12this. Yeah. Yeah. Well, look at you, Mark Twain
- 9:16in it. Mark Twain. Mark Twain. Philosopher. You
- 9:20know. A philosopher. That one really did something
- 9:24to me when I read it because I'm like, oh. The
- 9:29past couple of days, I didn't make it the best.
- 9:32That's right. But when you realize, oh, I have
- 9:36the choice. That's it. I'm the one who gets to
- 9:39choose. And sometimes my fearless leader, our
- 9:44executive director, Sharon Price, she says. Today's
- 9:48not the day to be mad. We're not going to be
- 9:50mad about that today. And it really is a choice.
- 9:55No matter how someone comes to you, that doesn't
- 9:58mean you have to match their energy. That's right.
- 10:00That's right. But then this match your energy
- 10:02world, it's hard to remember. It's hard to. It's
- 10:09the remembering or the awareness. That's it.
- 10:12Because I can match your energy. We can all match
- 10:15energy. Let's not go there. All right. All right.
- 10:20We have a fantastic show for you today. We've
- 10:23got some special guests. I can't wait to talk
- 10:26to these ladies. Will you introduce who we have?
- 10:29Yes. Today on the show, we have Meredith and
- 10:32Kim, both from the Girl Scouts of America. That's
- 10:38what I called Ned. That wasn't the one I wanted.
- 10:42I know you want. I can't go find it. Okay. We
- 10:46are excited. First, let me say I was a brownie
- 10:52and I still remember. What? How does it start?
- 11:02What? Oh. I just remembered it and then just
- 11:07forgot it. You was a brownie. I was a brownie.
- 11:11And, oh, to live by the Girl Scout law. What's
- 11:16the first word? On my honor. On my honor, I will
- 11:20try to serve God in my country. to help people
- 11:23at all times and to live by the Girl Scout law.
- 11:27I am 43 and I still remember that. Yes. Yes.
- 11:33So I thought this was going to go left real quick.
- 11:37No. So I'm excited to have you all here and to
- 11:42let our viewers know all about the Girl Scouts
- 11:45of America and hopefully the upcoming collaboration
- 11:50we have with you all. So if you could just please
- 11:53tell us a little bit about yourselves. You go
- 11:57first. Okay. Well, my name is Meredith. I was
- 11:59also a Girl Scout when I was younger. I started
- 12:02as a Brownie and moved probably until I was a
- 12:06cadet in middle school. I became a Girl Scout
- 12:10leader in 2010. I had two girls. I started their
- 12:14troops in kindergarten, led their troops both
- 12:17all the way through senior and high school. They're
- 12:19both in college now, lifelong or lifetime Girl
- 12:21Scout memberships. They are both still involved
- 12:25in Girl Scouts. They work at camp. They do volunteer
- 12:27activities, all that. I am currently the community
- 12:33recruitment and engagement coordinator for GSUS.
- 12:36Well, for our council here, Lexington, the Wilderness
- 12:38Road Council. So I just work with recruitment.
- 12:42of girls and adults, and then I also support
- 12:46the volunteers. I work with the girls in different
- 12:50capacities. I do a little bit of everything.
- 12:53Yeah, that's it. Fantastic. And I'm Kim, and
- 12:59I am also a Girl Scout. So my road was a little
- 13:03different. I wasn't a brownie. I joined when
- 13:06I was a junior and then went through cadets as
- 13:08a middle schooler. The Girl Scouts are real important
- 13:11for me. I joined when I was 10 and we kind of
- 13:14had a tragedy in our family. So my mom was kind
- 13:17of unavailable. So my Girl Scout leader really
- 13:20became a surrogate mother. Oh. And she was an
- 13:23amazing woman. I'm from Indiana. She was from
- 13:26Maine. She was a French -Canadian woman from
- 13:28Maine. Oh, wow. So she was very exotic. You know,
- 13:32from somebody who was basically raised in a cornfield
- 13:33in Indiana. So she was amazing. And she was just
- 13:36really important to me during those years. My
- 13:38daughter was also a Girl Scout, so a family of
- 13:41Girl Scouts. And I'm a regional membership manager
- 13:44for the Wilderness Road Council here in Lexington.
- 13:46And Meredith and I are part of the same team.
- 13:49And so I oversee a team of folks who are doing
- 13:51recruiting and programming and adult engagement
- 13:53and all kinds of different things. So, yeah.
- 13:56I got a question. I mean, as soon as I found
- 13:58out the Girl Scouts was coming, I had a question.
- 14:01So I remember, I think I was a Boy Scout. I don't
- 14:06know. But has it changed? I mean, because when
- 14:12I was little, we actually went outside. We actually
- 14:15played in the dirt and things like that. But
- 14:18I have to wonder, has the Girl Scouts changed
- 14:23their approach or are they still out in the woods
- 14:26and doing other things like that? What's different
- 14:29about Girl Scouts from when I was little? I would
- 14:33say that we try to adapt as time goes on, as
- 14:36things change. We change our programming and
- 14:39our outlook. Our mission stays the same. Every
- 14:42age of girls, every activity that we do, it's
- 14:46honestly up to the girls. It is a girl -led program.
- 14:49So whatever the girls want to do is what they
- 14:51do, obviously with guidance from their leaders.
- 14:55But if they want to be outdoors, they get outdoors.
- 14:58We have programming from outdoor activities,
- 15:01STEM. STEM has become a huge thing because it's
- 15:03so important. We have so many. um possibilities
- 15:06for the girls to to do we have um lots of annual
- 15:11activities or one big huge annual activity that
- 15:13we do excuse me that is a stem related activity
- 15:17but then each troop can do what they want so
- 15:20my my specific troops when my girls were growing
- 15:22up we did a little bit of everything just based
- 15:24on what the girls wanted to do we like to focus
- 15:26on things that they wouldn't necessarily get
- 15:28to do with their own families or their own excuse
- 15:32me personal lives But every troop is different.
- 15:35So if a girl wants to be outdoors, you absolutely
- 15:38can get outdoors. Our council has programming.
- 15:40So even if they're not with their troop, they
- 15:44can still register and do activities in any capacity
- 15:48that they wish. So outdoors, STEM, entrepreneurship,
- 15:52obviously cookie sales. All of those things.
- 15:56Life skills, that's a huge thing that we've really
- 15:58been focusing on also with the older girls. Because
- 16:01I think that's just so important. These girls,
- 16:03you know, they get through middle school, they
- 16:05get through high school, they go off on their
- 16:07own and they're like, what do I do now? So we
- 16:08focus on the small things, but we also focus
- 16:10on the big things at the same time. So to answer
- 16:12your question, I think that it has changed, but
- 16:15it's primarily the same. We just have maybe even
- 16:19more activities or more opportunities than we
- 16:21had when we were kids. That's true. It's just
- 16:26very adaptive. A loaded question I hit you with
- 16:29off the bat. Okay, we're going to take a quick
- 16:32commercial break. We will be back with Kim and
- 16:35Meredith on Look Who's Talking. Thank you for
- 17:03watching. All right. We are back. And I am with
- 17:31Meredith Lepp and Kim Gardner. And they are here
- 17:36with the Girl Scouts or from the Girl Scouts
- 17:38of America. Meredith, there's something that
- 17:42you said before the break that that just reached
- 17:45me. Because basically you said with the programming
- 17:50now, Girl Scouts is really girl led what the
- 17:54children want to do. And that reminds me of Head
- 17:57Start. That's how we lead in the classroom. We
- 18:01also have STEM. They lead the conversations for
- 18:04us because one, that's one of the best ways they
- 18:07they have to. to learn, but also to grow. So
- 18:11I absolutely love that. So let's get into a little
- 18:14bit about the collaboration between Head Start
- 18:18and the Girl Scouts of America. What? Can you?
- 18:21Yes, Cam. There will be a collaboration. Well,
- 18:26on a national level, there's already a collaboration.
- 18:28So you all can talk a little bit about that.
- 18:32Sure. So we're very excited about this partnership
- 18:34between the Girl Scouts and Head Start. And so
- 18:38basically what the Girl Scouts USA and this partnership
- 18:40has been able to do is provide free memberships
- 18:43for girls that are transitioning from Head Start
- 18:46into kindergarten. So we hope to be talking to
- 18:49girls and their families this summer through
- 18:51end of school celebrations or whatever. And what
- 18:54the partnership means is that parents can go
- 18:57on with a QR code, sign up their girls for Girl
- 19:01Scouts. And again, it's completely free. They'll
- 19:03receive three activity booklets for the summer.
- 19:06Just fun things that the girls can do. And then
- 19:08we'll have programs throughout the summer for
- 19:10the girls for them to become familiar with Girl
- 19:13Scouts and what the Girl Scouts are all about.
- 19:15And then we'll do troops. We'll form troops with
- 19:18the Head Start girls. And then in the fall, our
- 19:21program year starts the 1st of October. Those
- 19:23girls who are placed in troops, those Head Start
- 19:25girls, will again receive free memberships to
- 19:28become a Girl Scout. So they'll basically have
- 19:30free membership for about a year and a half to
- 19:32experience all the wonders of Girl Scouting.
- 19:34That's fantastic. Well, it is awesome. We're
- 19:37very excited. How young can you be to be a Girl
- 19:40Scout? And when does it end? Yeah, so daisies
- 19:43begin in kindergarten. So those are five -year
- 19:46-olds. And so it goes all the way up to ambassadors
- 19:50who are seniors in high school. We also have
- 19:53collegiate Girl Scouts. Oh, my God, I didn't
- 19:56know that. Yeah, who have gone all the way through
- 19:58Girl Scouts K -12, but they want to take that
- 20:00experience into college as well. So, yeah, so
- 20:03K -16, I guess, is when Girl Scouts are available.
- 20:07I feel like there should be, like, a nationwide
- 20:11Girl Scout reunion. Where they bring all, if
- 20:15you were ever, Brownie, Girl Scouts, or whatever.
- 20:18Come let people know, because I think that's
- 20:21the great way to reach out amongst generations,
- 20:25if that makes sense. Especially thinking of collegiate
- 20:29level. We hope that our kindergartners get to
- 20:33that level. So being able to have that kind of
- 20:36role model peer interaction would be great. But
- 20:39also there are things that me as a 43 year old
- 20:45can learn from. Those who may be older than me
- 20:48to say, hey, you've reached this point in life.
- 20:52Wait until this, you know. Sure. I absolutely
- 20:55love Girl Scouts. So if someone how can someone
- 21:00become a member? So with the. The Head Start
- 21:03collaboration, the partnership that we have,
- 21:05they have to go to the GSUSA site, register there
- 21:09as the Head Start students or the Head Start
- 21:12kids. That goes through the GSUSA site because
- 21:15it is a national partnership. If they are local,
- 21:17they can go to our local website, which is the
- 21:19Girl Scouts of Kentucky's Wilderness Road, and
- 21:22just get online. There's a button you can click
- 21:25to join, and you just go through the process
- 21:28online, and it's done. It's very simple. Or you
- 21:30can reach out. We can help you also. do it for
- 21:33you online or over the phone or whatever. So
- 21:35what if, say I have a parent that has children
- 21:39of different ages, one within the Head Start,
- 21:43which I think you said would be free, and then
- 21:46one not. And they're like, I don't know if I
- 21:50can afford for my older child to be a part. Are
- 21:55there any opportunities or scholarships that
- 21:57could help families out? Absolutely. We have
- 22:00financial aid scholarships that will pay for
- 22:03membership for the girls. It will also help pay
- 22:06for volunteers. If you're going to be a volunteer
- 22:09with the troop and you just don't have the money
- 22:12to pay that membership, you can also get financial
- 22:14aid scholarships for the adults as well. We also
- 22:16have scholarships for uniforms. It covers the
- 22:19basic sashes or vests and the basic patches that
- 22:22start the uniform. So we don't want to have any
- 22:25barriers for any girls, any volunteers, anyone
- 22:28to join Girl Scouts. So there's always that financial
- 22:30aid. We also have had two different insurances
- 22:34that have agreed to pay the membership cost,
- 22:41Medicaid or Medicare being one of them, and they
- 22:44reimburse for the membership. they get the financial
- 22:49aid from. And then our council office also has
- 22:52our own financial aid. So there's plenty of ways.
- 22:55Absolutely. There are no barriers. Come on. Be
- 22:58a Girl Scout, right? Absolutely. Yes. You know,
- 23:01one thing that Jessica was talking about is so
- 23:02true. And, you know, we didn't know that we're
- 23:05all Girl Scouts before we met Jessica. But it's
- 23:08a sisterhood. And if you do remember the law,
- 23:10which I went through with the Girl Scouts about
- 23:1210 months, so I do not know all of the law. But
- 23:14the very last part of the law says. Every Girl
- 23:17Scout has a sister. And it's a sisterhood. And
- 23:21it is just so exciting. It's fun to meet girls
- 23:24who are women now, who are former Girl Scouts.
- 23:27And you know what? I had a sister who ignored
- 23:30me, even though we lived in the same house. But
- 23:33I can say, being a Brownie, being in the Girl
- 23:37Scouts, that was my first introduction to sisterhood.
- 23:42group work you know um and it was so much fun
- 23:46we we always had a good time um but my favorite
- 23:50time was selling cookies yes i'm so glad you
- 23:53said that selling cookies that is the fundraiser
- 23:58that has never died it has never gotten out of
- 24:03you all's reach and it seems like i mean it's
- 24:09I mean, I know you all are not in the cookie
- 24:11business, but you are in the cookie business.
- 24:13And that is one of the ways that people are introduced
- 24:16to the Girl Scouts. So I was going to say, too,
- 24:20you know, the cookie sales is the biggest girl
- 24:22led business in the nation. It is absolutely
- 24:26girl led. It is obviously. You have the leaders
- 24:33that are in charge and handle the money and all
- 24:35that. But there are so many different life skills
- 24:36that the girls learn. And that's what we try
- 24:39to preach to, not preach, but teach the girls
- 24:41is this isn't just about getting out there and
- 24:43selling cookies. We get a very, very small amount
- 24:46of cookie proceeds for the troops. They get to
- 24:49keep a little bit of the money from the sales.
- 24:51But the most important part of the sales is learning,
- 24:53you know, customer service. Communication skills.
- 24:59I mean, the very first time you have a tiny little
- 25:01five -year -old at a booth and somebody goes,
- 25:03I don't want any cookies. And they're just like,
- 25:05oh, my gosh. They learn how to handle rejection
- 25:07very quickly because that does happen a lot.
- 25:10And we just had a board member whose daughter
- 25:13was a daisy this year, very first year daisy.
- 25:16And apparently she her daughter was working at
- 25:19cookie booths and she was texting our CEO and
- 25:22saying, you would not believe the change in her
- 25:25from the very first cookie booth to now because
- 25:27she's come out of her shell. She's talking to
- 25:29people. It's those it's those skills that everybody
- 25:31needs. You know, entrepreneurship. It adds to
- 25:34really what it's all about. And some of those
- 25:36skills are not even addressed until college or
- 25:39high school where they have a class where they're
- 25:42trying to. And by that time that. child has decided
- 25:45no that's not for me right I'm not reaching out
- 25:48so I I love that and and just to approach me
- 25:51when I don't want cookies is a challenge but
- 25:54I try to be very polite because as you said they're
- 25:58learning how to enact how to you know offer something
- 26:03if you reject it okay let's go on to the next
- 26:06one and it also builds confidence yes I think
- 26:09about Those who are more timid, shy, that will
- 26:13have to go up to a person and ask them a question.
- 26:17You know, not everyone has that personality to
- 26:21be able to say, hey, you want to buy some cookies?
- 26:23Right. Yeah. I was that person. I bet you were.
- 26:26I was the top sales. Oh, here we go. I sold,
- 26:34or can we say my mom sold, about 450 cookies.
- 26:40That's awesome. You know, we had a record this
- 26:43year of a girl that sold over 5 ,000 boxes, I
- 26:46think, at our council. Oh, my gosh. Thank you.
- 26:48Thank you for bringing that up. Just bring her
- 26:50down a little bit. No, I mean, it just shows
- 26:53how things have changed. When I was a kid, I
- 26:55have no idea how many boxes of cookies I sold,
- 26:57but I can remember laying on my parents' bed
- 26:59with a phone book. and going through and finding
- 27:01every person that I can think of. Phone book.
- 27:04Hold a call on them. Hey, this is Meredith. Hey,
- 27:07yourself. I did, and that's okay. That's okay.
- 27:10I mean, we adapt. They're going to look it up
- 27:13and say, what's a phone book? Instead of phone
- 27:16books, now we have apps where we just email people
- 27:18and text people, you know. But, yeah, it's definitely
- 27:21one of those things that girls will remember
- 27:22forever. Yeah, absolutely. Absolutely. It's it's
- 27:26good. It's good to see some of the things, you
- 27:29know, so many different nonprofits and organizations
- 27:33that existed when I was little have either phased
- 27:38out, closed their doors or adapted. And I'm so
- 27:42glad to see that the Girl Scouts have adapted
- 27:44and they are still strong and they're still in
- 27:47our community doing their thing. Absolutely.
- 27:50So can you I know that you have an event coming
- 27:53up. in June. Can you talk to us a little bit
- 27:56about that event? Right, so the Girl Scout Zoopalooza.
- 28:02It's going to be so much fun. It's at the Wilderness
- 28:05Road Girl Scout office on Executive Drive here
- 28:07in Lexington off Winchester Road. And it's on
- 28:10June 27th, so it's a Saturday. All Girl Scouts,
- 28:13so our Head Start girls are really welcome to
- 28:16come from 2 to 4. And all kinds of fun activities
- 28:19and snacks. And then we'll do a virtual tour
- 28:21of the Smithsonian Zoo in Washington, D .C. Nice.
- 28:25And see all the baby animals and learn about
- 28:28zoology and all kinds of good stuff. So it's
- 28:30going to be a great event for particularly our
- 28:33new Girl Scouts, our Head Start girls. So do
- 28:35you have to already be a member or is this an
- 28:38event where someone can come and sign up? I would
- 28:43say that they're not going to turn anybody away.
- 28:46It's primarily for new members and Head Start
- 28:49girls and current members, but a new member could
- 28:51be someone who just walks in the door and decides,
- 28:53hey, I want to join. So, yeah, absolutely. Anybody
- 28:55can come. So can you tell our viewers, how can
- 28:58they sign up to be a part or sign their chosen
- 29:01up to be a part of Girl Scouts? Just go on the
- 29:05website. We have the GSWRC .org, I think, is
- 29:09the website. You just go on, click the button
- 29:12that says join or different participation. There
- 29:16are options to be a volunteer, to register and
- 29:18be a troop leader or register as a volunteer.
- 29:21It'll automatically send you an application,
- 29:24volunteer application, and then also a background
- 29:26check. And then as the girl, you just put her
- 29:30in there. She goes into a little bit of a pool.
- 29:32And then we figure out where she is, what troop
- 29:35she could go into, what age group she is. Or
- 29:37if they already know somebody who's in a troop,
- 29:39they can search for that troop number and just
- 29:42automatically join that troop. Oh, wow. That's
- 29:45perfect. That's fantastic. Thank you all so much
- 29:48for being on the show and spending time and letting
- 29:50us know. Offering such a great program to our
- 29:55kiddos. Thank you for having us. We're really
- 29:57excited about this partnership. Thank you. Yes.
- 29:59All right, JCD. JCD. What we got? That it? That's
- 30:08it. That's a wrap. Thank you for listening to
- 30:11Look Who's Talking. Please tell your friends.
- 30:14We're here. We're waiting on you. Tell your neighbors.
- 30:18That's it. Thank you.
