- 0:10The flagship one O 6.3 KXNO bottom of the hour back to
- 0:14Houston we will go Stephen M Sipple 93.7 over in Lincoln and
- 0:19of course, Husker illustrated part of on three media.
- 0:22By the way, before we get to Carrie Miller, you'll join us
- 0:24here in seconds Saturday and Sunday.
- 0:28Are they like dinner time tips like 5:00 for the for the first
- 0:33game and then seven? Saturday, yes, I think Sunday,
- 0:37both CBS, but. I will look and they move up on
- 0:40CBS. And yes, yes, I believe.
- 0:43So like one in three, but I'll look for sure.
- 0:45Okay, yeah, I've been, I was trying to find out, I think.
- 0:48I think there are evening tips. When Iowa beats Nebraska,
- 0:52they'll they'll play. There you go. 5:00 or that'll be
- 0:55one of the options. Yeah, if you can find that trend
- 0:57because I I've been looking and couldn't find it.
- 0:59Maybe Carrie Miller will know. bleacherreport.com.
- 1:01Carrie Trenton, Ken, thanks for coming on a great time of year,
- 1:04especially for us here in the state of Iowa as both of our
- 1:07needle movers, Iowa and Iowa State are both alive.
- 1:10One place tonight. Iowa State placed tomorrow.
- 1:13Great time to be in the state of Iowa.
- 1:14But Carrie Miller, how are you? Hey, I'm I'm doing well and I
- 1:18I'm pretty sure the Sunday Elite 8 games are usually like 220
- 1:23Eastern and then 505 Eastern. I don't remember what it is on
- 1:26Saturday, but we won't even know the which games are in which
- 1:30time slot until later. Yeah, that does make that does
- 1:33make some sense. Well, let's let's start with the
- 1:35two our two games, obviously first tonight, Nebraska and
- 1:40Iowa. These two teams split the
- 1:42regular season. I will losing over there in
- 1:45Lincoln in overtime in the final game of the regular season.
- 1:48There's just two evenly matched teams.
- 1:51I think it's a coin flip. That's kind of been the
- 1:52consensus in these parts. Carrie, how do you see Iowa,
- 1:55Nebraska tonight? Yeah, I think it's a a coin flip
- 1:59as well, a very slow motion coin flip.
- 2:04I think Nebraska is like bottom five in the nation in a, you
- 2:09know, length of defensive possession.
- 2:11And then obviously Iowa is one of the slowest on offense, so
- 2:15not going to be many fast break points in this one.
- 2:17I don't imagine. But just like we all expected
- 2:20before the season, right, Iowa versus Nebraska for a spot in
- 2:23the Elite 8. But it should be a good game.
- 2:25I know a lot of people, you know, outside of that region are
- 2:30probably viewing it as the, you know, least compelling of the
- 2:33games, but it's probably going to be one of the most
- 2:35entertaining, most certainly the most, you know, no love lost of
- 2:40the game. Yeah, between the fan bases and
- 2:43the media in some respects. Plenty of that.
- 2:46There's a lot of angles and, well, a former Hawkeye is now
- 2:48playing for the Huskers. Not just playing.
- 2:52And Jacob Cook, who was one of his teammates last year, had
- 2:54some questions about price and some of the things that he
- 2:57stated. But that aside, in the game, two
- 3:00very close games, is there an X Factor that you look at, Carrie,
- 3:04anything that you point to and say, hey, I think this is
- 3:07something one way or the other that either Nebraska or Iowa can
- 3:09get advantage just because they're so well scouted.
- 3:12Both these coaches are excellent.
- 3:14They know all their tendencies. Anything you can look at,
- 3:16Carrie? I think the, I mean, the big X
- 3:20Factor for me is what Iowa is able to do forcing turnovers,
- 3:24because usually that's the strength of Nebraska, you know,
- 3:26not giving up the ball. But that's also a strength of
- 3:29Iowa is getting those takeaways. But if it's just, you know, kind
- 3:33of your standard half court game, I I think it'll probably
- 3:37play out more similarly to the first one that was like 5752
- 3:43then then the overtime game that was, you know, played in the low
- 3:4580s or wherever that was. But yeah, I think it's probably
- 3:49if I was able to generate 8 or more steals that that's probably
- 3:54a pretty big advantage for them. Kerry, go back to when when it
- 3:57was first announced, the McCollum is is leaving Drake and
- 3:59he's headed to Iowa. He's bringing most of those
- 4:02Bulldogs with him and that's that's what happened.
- 4:05Obviously, you know, from from from where are you from your
- 4:08outpost? Did you think, boy, this is this
- 4:11is an interesting hire? We'll see if it works.
- 4:13We'll see if valley kids can step in in mass as they have.
- 4:16We've seen them, you know, plucked into, you know, periodic
- 4:20periodically to different teams. But when essentially the whole
- 4:23roster comes with and what was what was kind of going through
- 4:26your mind? Did you think it would work to
- 4:27the level that obviously it has as they're reviving alive in the
- 4:31second weekend? I mean, Drake was a very good
- 4:34team last season. I mean, I guess the committee
- 4:37had decided that they weren't going to get in without the
- 4:40automatic bid with where they ended up being seated.
- 4:42But I thought they were solid, you know, top 25 ish team.
- 4:46But there was that question of, you know, there's a big
- 4:49difference going from the Valley to play in, you know, 20 Big 10
- 4:52games. And yeah, it was it was a pretty
- 4:54big question whether, you know, Sturtz and Man Yao and all that
- 4:58would be able to cut the mustard.
- 5:00But clearly they can, you know, they should have probably should
- 5:04have beaten Michigan there towards the end of the season
- 5:07and that would have been, you know, a real game changer.
- 5:09They would have been like a six seed or something.
- 5:12Then you know what, in hindsight, and we were talking
- 5:15for weeks and weeks and weeks, Carrie, I just got to get out of
- 5:17that 8-9 game, get out of that 8-9 game, and then Florida
- 5:21happens and they got out of it now got a shot against Nebraska
- 5:25to Elite 8. Just absolutely wild.
- 5:27Carrie, what a jump over to the Cyclone perspective.
- 5:29And you know, the Jefferson question remains.
- 5:32We'll see. They're going to be taking the
- 5:33hardwood here in a little bit and, and what it's going to be,
- 5:37is it Tennessee just if they get a bunch of offensive rebounds,
- 5:39they can hang around and if not, Iowa State cruises.
- 5:42How how do you look at this game with the Vols?
- 5:45Yeah, I mean, another one where the the turnovers will kind of
- 5:49tell the story, especially if Jefferson, you know, doesn't
- 5:52play or is is significantly limited.
- 5:54Then, you know, it's really up to Lipsy and and Tori to to
- 5:59really, you know, bring the Thunder and get those turnovers
- 6:02because Tennessee is not a particularly secure with the
- 6:06ball type of team. You know, that they don't have
- 6:08the Kai's Eagle anymore. I mean, Jacoby Gillespie is
- 6:11phenomenal, but he's not as, you know, turnover reverse.
- 6:13So I think that's where they could, you know, really kind of
- 6:16take over the game. But yeah, if Jefferson doesn't
- 6:19go and Tennessee is just able to get rebound after rebound after
- 6:23rebound, that doesn't bode well for the Cyclones.
- 6:26Although I do believe Tennessee, forget the exact number, but
- 6:30there have been three games, I think, where Tennessee got 22
- 6:33offensive rebounds and still lost.
- 6:35So you still got to be able to eventually score even if you
- 6:38create second and third chances. So we'll see if they can, you
- 6:41know, put the ball in the hoop. That's an interesting nugget.
- 6:44Did not realize that. Well, let's let's go to Thursday
- 6:47before we take a look with you, ask you to take a look at some
- 6:50of the Friday games. Arizona Arkansas has got a lot
- 6:53of eyeballs on this game tonight.
- 6:54There's a lot of Calipari fans, This Arkansas team, obviously,
- 6:58they've got a superstar on their bench.
- 7:00Arizona's got a bunch of them on their bench.
- 7:02How do you see Arizona, Arkansas?
- 7:04Do you give the Razorbacks a chance in this one, Carrie?
- 7:07I mean, they've got a chance. I think nothing would surprise
- 7:11me, you know, in terms of who wins these next eight games.
- 7:15But I I'm not picking Arkansas. I think Arizona's the best team
- 7:19in the country and I don't think Arkansas plays enough defense.
- 7:24If it was if it was the if it was Alabama against Arizona
- 7:29instead, a team that just makes it rain 3 pointers, I would
- 7:33believe in it a little bit more. But Arkansas, outside of Acuff
- 7:36and and to some extent Malik Thomas, they don't really shoot
- 7:39that many threes. So I don't know that they're
- 7:40going to be able to just, you know, more threes.
- 7:43You know, threes are worth two more than twos.
- 7:45And you got to be able to outscore Arizona, who's just
- 7:47going to be relentless in the paint in this game.
- 7:50So I think Arizona probably just does what they've done for most
- 7:54of the season and ends up winning the game on the glass
- 7:57and in the paint. We talked earlier about Purdue,
- 7:59Texas. What's the path for the
- 8:02Longhorns to pull the upset here?
- 8:03Can you find one? Yeah, I mean, if they're able to
- 8:07play their super physical game, what they did against BYU and NC
- 8:12State, I think the game against Gonzaga kind of got away from
- 8:15Texas in terms of their style, but they were still able to pull
- 8:18it out because Gonzaga didn't make much of anything in that
- 8:21game. But if they're able to play, you
- 8:24know, when Bogatitis is drawing like 8 fouls in a game and that
- 8:29that can change everything, especially for a Purdue team
- 8:31that isn't particularly deep. I mean, they've got three really
- 8:35solid front court guys and I don't know if Modest can foul
- 8:38them all out, but he's going to try.
- 8:41Yes, he is. You mentioned that rounded 64
- 8:44game against NC State. A quick aside, Will Wade going
- 8:48back to LSU after the strong ass offer?
- 8:50It just LSU in general. They make college athletics now.
- 8:54They got two of the most unlikeable figures together with
- 8:57him and Lane Kiffin and Ken mentioned earlier the women's
- 8:59basketball coach is not a very likable one either in Kimboki.
- 9:02It's just absolutely wild. And will Wade back where?
- 9:06Well, now he can do it and not get in trouble for it, right?
- 9:09Yeah, maybe. Maybe if Texas goes deep enough,
- 9:12then Shawn Merrill will go back to Arizona too.
- 9:15You know, that's legal. That could be if Tommy Lloyd is
- 9:20going to North Carolina, there's going to be an opening.
- 9:22I don't know. I tried to not pay too much
- 9:25attention to the coaching carousel because it's, I mean,
- 9:27obviously it's important, but at this time of year, I just want
- 9:29to focus on these games. I know I sound like one of the
- 9:32head coaches. You're preaching the corner.
- 9:35I love it. Let's finish up tonight's slate.
- 9:38Obviously the winner of Iowa and Nebraska would get the winner of
- 9:41Houston and Illinois. Houston, really good defensive
- 9:44club. They score as well.
- 9:45But Illinois, there's such a fun team to watch with all the Euros
- 9:49in the brand of basketball. They have it.
- 9:50Oh, by the way, Wagler's pretty good as well.
- 9:52Illinois, Houston tonight, your thoughts?
- 9:56I think that's going to be the best game of this round, maybe
- 10:00of this entire weekend because that's, I mean, I think that's 4
- 10:03versus 6 as far as Ken Palm is concerned.
- 10:05Like this is, this should be a final 4 caliber type of game.
- 10:10We'll see how well Illinois is able to defend.
- 10:14They forced turnovers at the lowest rate in the entire
- 10:16country and Houston doesn't turn the ball over legitimately.
- 10:20Houston might commit 0 Turner in this game, but it'll depend on,
- 10:24you know, whether Kingston Fleming's and Emmanuel Sharp are
- 10:26hitting their these mid range twos that they tend to fall in
- 10:30love with a little bit too much. But I don't think Illinois
- 10:34defenses quite up to the task. I think Houston wins a close
- 10:37one. Harry, Duke, St.
- 10:41Johns and I get the Johnnies because you got the New York
- 10:45market. I think people of a certain era,
- 10:47people in their 40s and 50s, remember in some of those great
- 10:50St. John's teams, I love Chris Bolen
- 10:52growing up and there there's so many angles that they've had the
- 10:55same drought. Iowa, they haven't played in the
- 10:56Sweet 16 since 1999, yet you think the St.
- 10:59John's is this national power? They're fun, they're
- 11:02interesting. Is Duke a different animal or do
- 11:04you see them being wounded as they've looked a couple of
- 11:06times, including against the end in the first round?
- 11:10You know, I happened to remember when we were, you know, working
- 11:13on these Sweet 16 previews, it was against Saint John's that
- 11:17Mike Schefsky got his one thousandth career win.
- 11:21I don't know if there's a obviously he's not there
- 11:23anymore, but maybe a little bit of a, you know, a revenge served
- 11:2712 years cold type of situation here.
- 11:30If the the Red Storm are able to pull it off.
- 11:31And I think they could. And I think it really depends on
- 11:35really Duke's health. I think if they if we don't even
- 11:38know if Foster is going to play, we assume Young was going to
- 11:40play and, you know, play a little bit better, a little more
- 11:42healthily than he did in that game against TCU.
- 11:46So if he's able to be in there with Boozer taking on edge of
- 11:49four, I think Duke probably gets the edge.
- 11:52I think even without Foster, Kaden Boozers good enough to get
- 11:56them over the hump there. But the point I've made for both
- 12:01of Duke's losses was, you know, was JT Toppin was awesome and
- 12:04did just enough to overcome Caleb or Cameron Boozer.
- 12:08And then Caleb Wilson, same thing, the loss to North
- 12:11Carolina. So I think it all hinges on Edge
- 12:13of Four and whether he's able to to outplay Boozer.
- 12:17Now, any chance Foster's back? Maybe not this weekend, or maybe
- 12:21if they get to Sunday or Or is he done?
- 12:23Do you expect to see him on the floor again this year?
- 12:26Yeah, I know when when the injury first happened, they said
- 12:30they hope to have him back by the Final Four if they get there
- 12:33and then saw reports from yesterday or two days ago that
- 12:37he might be available this weekend.
- 12:39I don't know if that's just a little bit of gamesmanship or
- 12:41what, but I don't know what when he got hurt initially, like I
- 12:46was, I was watching that game live was like, oh, that's like
- 12:48a, a Liz Frank injury or something.
- 12:50He ain't back. But I don't know what it ended
- 12:53up being. I know he had surgery, but he
- 12:54was like immediately reaching for the middle of his foot.
- 12:57So it looked like, you know, either a broken bone or, you
- 13:00know, a complete tear of plantar fasciitis or something.
- 13:04It wasn't your standard rolled ankle that you can just come
- 13:07back from. So I don't, I'm not, and I'm not
- 13:09a doctor, but I'm not optimistic that he'll be back.
- 13:12Opposite Iowa State, Tennessee, tomorrow night will be Michigan,
- 13:15UConn. There's going to be a lot of
- 13:17eyeballs on that one. You got two of the craziest
- 13:20coaches on the sideline, though. They do it different ways.
- 13:23Izzo hopping up and down like leprechaun, Hurley throwing
- 13:26bombs all over the place. I mean, the coaching match up
- 13:29aside, what do you think we're going to see on the floor?
- 13:32Yeah, it'll be, there'll be a lot of cuts to the the coaches
- 13:36for sure. They they might as well just
- 13:38have them each corner for the whole game.
- 13:40But yeah, I think that's if it if it's not Houston, IL, that's
- 13:46the best game. I think it's probably that one,
- 13:48just two very evenly matched teams who you know, if Reed is
- 13:52playing like you did in the first weekend, I think he had 41
- 13:55points and 40 rebounds between the two games.
- 13:58But Michigan State's front court is just massive, like they're
- 14:02the stars are their their guards, Cohen Carr and and
- 14:04Jeremy Fears junior. But it's the the rebounders, the
- 14:07the big uglies who, you know, really kind of steer their ship
- 14:11and what they're able to do in the painting on defense.
- 14:14So I think Michigan State probably wins.
- 14:17I wasn't particularly high on U Conn even before they lost to
- 14:21Marquette and then got pummeled by Saint John's in the Big East
- 14:24tournament. I thought UCLA would be in this
- 14:26game instead of the the hunt. But that that Hurley guy, he can
- 14:29coach. So I'm definitely not counting
- 14:31them out. And last one, obviously Alabama,
- 14:34Michigan, Michigan is just steam rolling teams or through the
- 14:38first weekend to Saint Louis. They just destroyed them.
- 14:40I thought that might be a closer game.
- 14:41It wasn't. Your thoughts on Alabama and
- 14:44Michigan as we wrap things up with Carrie Miller from Bleacher
- 14:46Report. Yeah, I mean, that Saint Louis
- 14:49game was good for about 25 minutes.
- 14:51Same with the game against Howard.
- 14:53But just eventually it's like it's almost reminiscent of that
- 14:58said Kentucky team that went 38 and one, it was just like, yeah,
- 15:01anybody can hang with them for 2025, but who can do it for 40?
- 15:04And I don't I don't trust Alabama defense at all to be
- 15:08able to to do anything to slow down Michigan.
- 15:10So I think this, it's probably going to be, you know, 102 to 95
- 15:15type of game. I don't know what the over under
- 15:17is, but I'd probably hammer the over if I was still into sports
- 15:19betting. Good stuff.
- 15:22Did you learn your lesson or it can get you no doubt about it.
- 15:26Hey, Carrie, thanks for jumping on, man.
- 15:28We appreciate your contribution. Great stuff.
- 15:30Carrie Miller, thank you so much.
- 15:33You got it. Take care guys.
- 15:33Yeah, good to talk to you. Carrie Miller,
- 15:35bleacherreport.com on the eight games that will take place for
- 15:39tonight and for tomorrow. Is there a of the 8 most, is
- 15:44there one team that is it Michigan that you can just go
- 15:47ahead and get out your pen and write them in your bracket?
- 15:49You still you think Alabama's got a shot?
- 15:50No, it's just Alabama's 3 point variance.
- 15:53I mean, they can make 17 threes, Yeah.
- 15:55So I mean, it's I don't think that's the one.
- 15:58If there was one, it would be probably Purdue for me.
- 16:01It really, I think so. I I don't like that Texas team.
- 16:06I didn't see him enough during the regular season really to
- 16:09develop an opinion on them. But he mentioned Vuiken Titus is
- 16:13he's really fun player, like he's skilled inside.
- 16:16He's got kind of, he's not your traditional Euro.
- 16:19There's a little bit more of an edge to him, though.
- 16:22He can step out. But yeah, he's got some
- 16:24toughness to him. So I do like his game, but I
- 16:26don't love their backcourt. Purdue, I guess they figured it
- 16:30out and neutral court what they did obviously at the Big 10
- 16:34tournament, but even during the regular season when they
- 16:36struggled so much at Mackie, they actually were really good
- 16:39in the non conference. Have they ever struggled that
- 16:41much at Mackie? I find it hard.
- 16:43To ever is a long time. I mean they had some down years.
- 16:45Painter early on had some down. During but during this run have
- 16:48they? Been no.
- 16:49Nothing like that, no. I don't think so.
- 16:51Either they were the preseason number one team when they lose 4
- 16:53times, I think, I think Iowa State, yeah, Illinois, Michigan,
- 16:59Michigan State and they lost five times at Mackey this year.
- 17:03I still can't believe Wisconsin went out as quickly as they did.
- 17:05That was the one team in the Big 10 that I thought had a chance.
- 17:08I mean, obviously other than the, you know, the Michigan's
- 17:11and. A high point was good.
- 17:13I mean, they pushed Arkansas, yeah.
- 17:15And that's what happens when you have money at the mid major
- 17:17level. I was about to say that's one of
- 17:18the things that I learned in this tournament was just some of
- 17:21the the benefits. I had no idea High Point's as
- 17:23nice as it is. Yeah, that gym that they play
- 17:26in, it's a palace. Speaking of High Point, I
- 17:29mentioned earlier I was listening to podcast with
- 17:31Benetti earlier today. Benetti was the radio voice of
- 17:35High Point, that's how. That's where he started.
- 17:37And an assistant coach that he roomed with in a couple of Rd.
- 17:41trips. Josh Shirts.
- 17:42Is that a fact life? Some of the way that these
- 17:46things just all mold together and you hear these stories of
- 17:48where these people come from. Have you seen, And it's going
- 17:50all over Twitter, Kevin Harlan's high school broadcasting career.
- 17:54I did, yeah. Jeez, and some of the some of
- 17:59his the not luxuries but some of the doors that were open to him
- 18:04because of his last name helps. Right.
- 18:09Watching getting into Lambeau Field with the NBC broadcast
- 18:12because of Grandpa. Be nice.
- 18:14Indeed, the president of the. Packers, that doesn't hurt at
- 18:17all. You saw no.
- 18:18He's good. I'm not saying he's phenomenal.
- 18:20Yes, absolutely. And it helps.
- 18:21I mean, no Eagle. I don't like it at the beginning
- 18:25because. Joe Buck don't think his dad
- 18:26didn't open the. Door Oh, absolutely.
- 18:28Those guys definitely have a leg ahead, but you also have to be
- 18:31able to stand. On it.
- 18:32And they all have. Absolutely every single one of
- 18:34them. And after a couple of broadcasts
- 18:35and no Eagle, I'm like, yeah, he can't even.
- 18:38I want to hate this guy. I know, but he's really good.
- 18:41He's really good. He's.
- 18:42Excellent. He's so, so good.
- 18:43You saw the TV numbers that came out from the second round.
- 18:45It's incredible. The number 2 rated game.
- 18:48Oh, I didn't see this. I didn't see a breakdown.
- 18:50Yes #1 Kansas. St.
- 18:53John's, OK #2 Iowa State, Kentucky.
- 18:57Was it really? Yes, now the top eight games
- 19:00were all CBS exclusive games. Where was Vandy, Nebraska?
- 19:05Not in the top 10 because it wasn't on CBS.
- 19:08Tru TV or wherever it was. In fact, out of the top ten,
- 19:11only one cable game made the list.
- 19:14The other nine are from CBS Broadcast Windows, Iowa,
- 19:17Florida. Had to of yes. 5.14 million for
- 19:21the Hawkeyes and the Gators. 9.79 for Iowa State, Kentucky.
- 19:27Huge numbers watching Marquee and appropriate.
- 19:31That PCA ran down the first ball in center field to start this
- 19:35season, right? He's off and running, he's got
- 19:37the cha in his mouth, he's ready to go and he's got all the money
- 19:40he wants for Copenhagen now going forward.
- 19:42What? So what's Oh, for cope, for The
- 19:43Chew, not for going to copen, not for the you can do Denmark.
- 19:47He good Yeah we'll head to Houston when we come back
- 19:51Stephen M simple standing by we'll pick sips brain on this
- 19:54game tonight from a Nebraska perspective there his station
- 19:57and his show has been there broadcasting live for the last
- 20:00couple of days in Houston we'll get his thoughts on what he sees
- 20:04and what hit lies ahead and his keys to the game Miller and
- 20:07Condon back with that transplation of the day still to
- 20:09come as well by the way the boys in the afternoon as we will be
- 20:13tomorrow incidentally Trent and I will doing our show at.
- 20:16Buffalo Wild Wings on Merle Hay off the benches at Dave and
- 20:20Buster's today. They also have signed
- 20:23basketballs to give away courtesy of Budweiser.
- 20:25I'm a column sign basketball and Otzel Burger sign basketball
- 20:29will have the same tomorrow during our two hour program will
- 20:34be at the Merle Hay Rd. Buffalo Wild Wings, Budweiser
- 20:38and KX and O teaming up. There'll be a plenty of
- 20:40giveaways. Budweiser's got some games down
- 20:42there as well. They've got a bunch of
- 20:44giveaways, including those two autographed basketball by the
- 20:48two respective coaches. Likewise, the boys in the
- 20:51afternoon today at the in West Des Moines at Dave and Buster's.
- 20:54And we'll be in Des Moines again.
- 20:55That will be the Merle Hay. So if you just think Buffalo
- 20:58Wild Wings, well, don't think of the one, Whatever suburb maybe
- 21:00you're in, it's the Des Moines one.
- 21:02We're going to meet the middle Rd.
- 21:03Merle Hay Rd. We will meet there and Ken and I
- 21:05will actually meet in the middle.
- 21:07Yeah, from Western one in Ankeny.
- 21:08Yes, absolutely. Right in the middle.
- 21:11Can we get you to have a Bud Light?
- 21:12No, come on, I'm not drinking Bud Light.
- 21:15Come on, you used to cut Bud Light with what was your?
- 21:18With Ruthie from What's the? Now, exile, you got a lot of
- 21:22quirks. Yeah, that was one.
- 21:24It's not the oddest. We know what the oddest 1 is.
- 21:26Yeah, I know, but. And it was just one of those
- 21:29random things you cut your Ruthie with a little Bud Light.
- 21:33Because it's I can't, I want to drink two or three.
- 21:36Okay, as I've gotten older, I can't drink two or three.
- 21:39I mean that's high test. Oh, you are my favorite.
- 21:44Yeah, I'm going to miss you. And I'll miss this, too.
- 21:47Great share. Hammer, Miller and Condon 125.
- 21:49Simple next. But what a year to go out,
- 21:51right? Both our teams in the Sweet 16.
- 21:52My God, I'm a fortunate sports talker.
- 21:55It's the Iowa Sports Radio Network.
- 22:02It's time for sin. Steven M Simple talks with
- 22:07myself and Ken on Nebraska football.
- 22:09I mean, I have a radio show, we have callers.
- 22:12I pay attention to my Twitter notifications and all that.
- 22:15There's definitely some frustration.
- 22:17We talk Cornhuskers, and you never know what else is going to
- 22:21come up with 30 years on the Nebraska beat.
- 22:26Here's Steven M Simple. As long as they're paying me to
- 22:29talk, I'm just going to keep doing it.
- 22:32Hi welcome back Miller and Pound and I the sports radio network
- 22:35just passed 130 off the bench coming up at the top of the
- 22:38hour. The boys live Dave and Buster's
- 22:40this afternoon from 2:00 until 5 off to Houston.
- 22:44Sip is there along with his morning radio show 93.7 over in
- 22:47lincolnhuskerillustrated.com, part of on three Media and
- 22:51Steven M joins us. What a what a year Sip who, who
- 22:54saw this coming, right? Not only Nebraska winning a game
- 22:57in a tournament, getting through the first weekend and in their
- 23:00path, the Iowa Hawkeyes that have had their own incredible
- 23:06run to get here as well. It's amazing that these two
- 23:09border rivals will battle tonight with the winner going to
- 23:13the Elite 8. Couldn't script it.
- 23:14Sip couldn't script it. No, I mean, it's the intrigue is
- 23:19sort of ridiculously high. I it's almost, I mean, I, I
- 23:24don't. Yeah, I haven't.
- 23:27I don't know that I fully have grasped it.
- 23:29I don't think I will until they walk out on the court and it'll
- 23:33be so intense these games that now listen, you guys, it's more
- 23:37old hat for you guys to cover the NCAA Tournament.
- 23:41I haven't done it very often and I haven't.
- 23:45Yeah, it's true. I certainly had never.
- 23:48Obviously Nebraska has never gone this far, obviously.
- 23:53And it's what you notice is the intensity is ridiculous, almost
- 23:59the band, the Nebraska game, Oh my God, I don't know how to
- 24:03characterize that level of intensity.
- 24:07So, and you know what? I bring that up because that's
- 24:09what it'll be like tonight. I hope so.
- 24:12Oh, it will be. It will be most game probably.
- 24:17They'll have a a decided advantage, I believe in
- 24:20attendance, but it's not going to be anything like Oklahoma
- 24:23City. I mean, talk about taking over a
- 24:24building, though. Iowa just went through that in
- 24:27Tampa. The game around before
- 24:29themselves in a road environment.
- 24:30What's the anticipation? You've been down there, people
- 24:33traveling. Look, they had two decades and
- 24:35not going to a bowl game. They've never won an NCAA
- 24:37tournament game. They got a lot of money that has
- 24:39saved up throughout the years. What do you anticipate, though?
- 24:42Joking aside, zip, how many Hustler fans are going to make
- 24:45it? What?
- 24:46What? What are you talking about?
- 24:48No chats? No chats.
- 24:48Truth. Not so subtle.
- 24:54I It is hard to figure now. Kenny might remember the name
- 24:59Joseph Duarte. Yeah.
- 25:01I do. He worked for the Houston
- 25:03newspaper and he said that Houston is there.
- 25:07There's some concerns. Houston fans are not fervent.
- 25:09It's a it's a extraordinary basketball program.
- 25:13But he thought that there was some concern that Nebraska fans
- 25:16would buy some Houston tickets up and push its number up a
- 25:20little higher. It's who?
- 25:22I don't know. I mean, there's I think for all
- 25:25the speculation, I think it could get to 7000, something
- 25:30like that. It's a 19,000 seat arena, maybe
- 25:35more than that. Nothing.
- 25:37Yeah. I don't.
- 25:37I can't imagine a scene like Oklahoma City that seemed like a
- 25:43one off, but these fans are loud.
- 25:49They'll be. It'll be interesting.
- 25:51What? What don't you think Iowa fans
- 25:53will cut into it though? Not to the extent of Nebraska.
- 25:57No, Nebraska's going to have an advantage.
- 25:58There'll be Illinois fans in there.
- 25:59The question is, who are the Houston and Illinois fans going
- 26:02to be rooting for Iowa or Nebraska?
- 26:04Because that's always a big part of the NCAA Tournament.
- 26:07I, I know I got to explain that to you guys over there, but
- 26:09yeah, this is always something that happens is the opposing fan
- 26:12bases inside the building and I have no clue.
- 26:15Illinois fans hate Iowa. Houston probably doesn't have a
- 26:19skin in the game, but who would you rather face, the nine seed
- 26:21or the four seed? Well, I think usually the
- 26:25underdog is the yeah, I want a second.
- 26:29Usually the underdog would get the I would get the the louder
- 26:33cheers, the more fans. But Nebraska as even as a four
- 26:38seed could be sort of interpreted as an underdog in
- 26:42some ways, just not, not not pure matchup wise, but just
- 26:46history wise, right? I mean, Nebraska is this kind of
- 26:50this it's a story, you know, they never won an NCAA
- 26:53tournament game. And now here they are, one game
- 26:55from the Elite 8. So I I don't know how that'll
- 26:58go. It's hard to.
- 26:59It's hard to, I don't know. Sip, I want to go back to the
- 27:03Vandy game. Did you I don't know where you
- 27:05were if you were still courtside at that that time, Did you think
- 27:08the ball was in the the last second heave Vivandy after
- 27:12Nebraska taken a 2 point lead? Did you think it was in?
- 27:15It sure looked like it was on the right path.
- 27:20It's happened all too fast for me to assess it that way.
- 27:23OK, I can't, I can't really say that.
- 27:27I don't know. I don't know what my brain was
- 27:29telling me. I no, I mean, it went out and
- 27:32that was it for me. It was odd.
- 27:35That was an odd moment of time, you know, when that it was down.
- 27:40I mean, like it did. It was then it came out.
- 27:44But yeah, it doesn't. You seldom seem like that, that
- 27:49that it goes down that far then comes out, if that makes sense.
- 27:51But it was a moment that game was, I mean, I don't know what
- 27:59psychological damage to this fan base would have been had that
- 28:03shot on. And I don't even want to think
- 28:04about. I mean, and then the reason I
- 28:08bring that up is because it's sort of the same thing today.
- 28:11If Nebraska is denied, there's a lot of people they have a hard
- 28:16time with the notion of losing to Iowa.
- 28:20Including your Co host. I heard that little piece from
- 28:22earlier in the week that that of all the things Iowa stands in
- 28:26their way. I thought that was a great clip
- 28:27on your on your station's ex account.
- 28:31Oh yeah, the Iowa thing is really over here.
- 28:34It always get the feeling it's a little more real over here than
- 28:36over there, but I. Think it's growing, Has it?
- 28:40Yeah. So we got a lot of rivals, too.
- 28:42That's true. I mean, I tell this to Ken.
- 28:44Yeah, I tell this to Ken all the time because he's only lived in
- 28:47Des Moines. I've lived in different parts of
- 28:49the state growing up. For me, it was Minnesota.
- 28:52When I was at Iowa, there was a lot of Chicago people, and
- 28:55Illinois became a big rivalry there.
- 28:56If you're in Dubuque, it's Wisconsin.
- 28:59Sioux City, Council Bluffs, Absolutely.
- 29:00Yeah, it's Nebraska over there. But it's it's so dependable.
- 29:03And who would be Nebraska's second rival?
- 29:09Wisconsin, I would say, yeah. And even that one kind of feels
- 29:13like a stretch. Right now, distant, distant,
- 29:15distant. I mean, it's really distant.
- 29:20That's yeah, it'd probably be Wisconsin.
- 29:22Sip I don't know how Kel Jacobson was able to muster up
- 29:26that game, the final game of the regular season.
- 29:28I go back to that overtime game when Iowa came back to to to tie
- 29:34the game and to send it to overtime.
- 29:35Kel Jacobson was unbelievable in that game.
- 29:39I guess he's in X Factor again, but I'm or or is he who has to
- 29:44who has to other than the obvious Sanford and you know,
- 29:47Sam Hoiberg have to has to do what he does.
- 29:49Who's The X Factor on Nebraska for this team to get to the
- 29:52next? I believe it's Frager.
- 29:55He had six points apiece in the first two games.
- 29:59It's Braden Frager, who's a 6th man and he's ultra talented.
- 30:03He'd start at most places and he just wasn't.
- 30:07He really struggled in the in the second go round with Iowa.
- 30:11There was this photo of him on the bench alone while the rest
- 30:15of the team huddled. It was he was just really down
- 30:19on himself. He didn't play particularly well
- 30:22in the game in Iowa City, but but I think he's their second
- 30:25best player. I got to be careful because it's
- 30:29Stanford first. Then it's either Sam or it
- 30:32depends what you're looking for. Frager's really explosive and
- 30:35strong. He's he's bouncy.
- 30:38He gives Nebraska more athleticism than anybody.
- 30:41He's super athletic. You've seen him.
- 30:43He's he's tomahawk dunk guy. He's he's big, strong kid and he
- 30:51he's played really, he played really well against Bandy pretty
- 30:55well against Troy. He didn't play very well for a
- 30:59stretch late in the season. So I think it's him.
- 31:03I really believe it's Fragger. Fragger can get you 15 plus.
- 31:06I would say good luck to the Hawkeyes.
- 31:08You know if if everything else is pretty standard.
- 31:12When you flip it the other way, you look at Iowa, they've done a
- 31:15really good job in both games. I I think against starts he got
- 31:18off a little bit more at home, but certainly not over in
- 31:21Lincoln. What do you, what's the thing
- 31:23that does concern you from the Iowa side?
- 31:25Is there a guy, a player, just a match up, something that they do
- 31:28that does leave you a little concerned?
- 31:30They've evolved. I mean, I think they've, I think
- 31:32that team has evolved. Now you you guys know better
- 31:35than me, but from my vantage point, this team Iowa has
- 31:39evolved since Nebraska played them and I was sitting and I was
- 31:44sitting you know, they had lost that was an 8 games that ended
- 31:47an 8 game stretch where Iowa lost six games, six of eight.
- 31:52And then it I don't know when it happened, but it looked like it
- 31:57in Lincoln. Now some of it is what Nebraska
- 32:01did, but stirs just was more deferential.
- 32:03He deferred like he he he wasn't as bald dominant.
- 32:08I mean, there's times he'd run me a Luca before that he had so
- 32:11bald. He was so bald dominant, you
- 32:13know, and then all of a sudden he wasn't.
- 32:16So getting to the concerns. I'll tell you what concerns me
- 32:19is after watching Iowa in Lincoln, you know, I know they
- 32:23lost in overtime and then watching Iowa against Florida,
- 32:27it's these other guys. Cooper, Koch, Combs played KL
- 32:32Combs played really well in Lincoln.
- 32:34Banks was extraordinary against Iowa.
- 32:37I, you know, I think at 20, right, 26 if I remember and that
- 32:42that those guys, it's sort of the rest of them, particularly
- 32:47Koch and Banks. I thought in Iowa City Banks
- 32:52level of defense kind of set the tone.
- 32:55He's really defense. I mean, I don't know if he
- 32:57depends like that all the time. Sure did that night.
- 33:00Oh my God, it was scary. I I wouldn't want him in front
- 33:04of me in any circumstance. So I these no, I was hey, man,
- 33:10they got my attention. They got my attention in
- 33:13Lincoln. Well, they got my attention in
- 33:15Iowa City. I was, I was Nebraska couldn't
- 33:17do anything offensively. They were having trouble making
- 33:20passes against Iowa City in that game.
- 33:23They were, I mean, Rink looked like he had the hands of a deer.
- 33:28I don't know what was going on. I mean, it was like he couldn't
- 33:30grab the ball, couldn't dribble. I the pressure out was enormous.
- 33:34Did not you did not see that pressure in Lincoln, though.
- 33:37I don't what I was, that's one thing I was taken by.
- 33:40But against Florida, you saw a well-rounded team and that kid
- 33:44that hit the shot was, what's his name, Fulgaris.
- 33:49I he was only two for seven in Lincoln.
- 33:51And I'm not Hubie Brown and I don't pretend to be, but I saw
- 33:55something. He moves really well for a 6
- 33:58foot 10 guy. He's only two for seven against
- 34:00Nebraska, but it was in my mind like that kid's going to be
- 34:04good. And then he got pretty good
- 34:06late. Love you went old school with
- 34:07Hubie Brown. Absolutely.
- 34:08I'm not surprised by with our demographic that that's where
- 34:11you went with. That you mentioned, fool Garris,
- 34:13Iowa is, I believe, 16 in one this year when he scores double
- 34:16figures. He's trouble.
- 34:20I mean, he looks good shooting it, but he also looks good going
- 34:22to the basket and when he when he when he gets downhill, it's
- 34:27it's pretty impressive. Close game sip.
- 34:30How do you see it? Oh yeah, really close.
- 34:32I don't even know how to. I don't.
- 34:34It's one of those games that feels almost too close to call.
- 34:36I think Nebraska. Kenny, I'm going to invoke a
- 34:41horse race term I've been using over here.
- 34:43Nebraska kind of rebroke, you know, they you know, sometimes a
- 34:47horse will re break and they kind of did that now just sort
- 34:51of Iowa, but Nebraska is kind of the Nebraska of the first those
- 34:56first two games when it was really playing.
- 35:00That's the kind of the version you're going to see.
- 35:02I mean they seems like they found themselves against Troy
- 35:06like really well against Troy in the first round and played
- 35:09really, really well against Fandy.
- 35:12I like Nebraska by an edge, not just because I'm over here.
- 35:16I just think they've they've and I think their defense sets them
- 35:20apart. They play a little better
- 35:21defense than Iowa. You know, when you go back to
- 35:23the season that Nebraska had that that that tough time that
- 35:27they had, if you take a look at it at at Michigan, home to
- 35:31Illinois and then at Purdue, that to three games when they
- 35:34lost three of their four games. So the the heavy heads of the
- 35:37Big 10 shared the court with them when it didn't go their
- 35:40way. Sip.
- 35:41It's going to be a fascinating game.
- 35:42It really is. I think it's an absolute coin
- 35:44flip. Can make a case for Iowa, can
- 35:46make a case for Nebraska. Can't wait to see it go at 6:30.
- 35:50One of these two teams is going to play on Saturday.
- 35:53Just remarkable. Sip, thanks for doing this, pal.
- 35:56Appreciate it. As always, Enjoy the game
- 35:58tonight, 93.7 mornings over in Lincoln and a full recap at
- 36:02Husker Illustrated part of on three media.
- 36:05SIP Thanks for popping on pal. Yeah, you guys are the best.
- 36:08I mean that. Take care.
- 36:09Good to talk. Stephen M Simple from over in
- 36:12Lincoln. Interesting for his perspective.
- 36:14He picked. He picked Nebraska.
- 36:17Is every prediction that SIP has made on our radio show has been
- 36:19wrong gone well? Well, you say they're going to
- 36:21go into Iowa City and throttle them.
- 36:22I think it's something wrong along those terms.
- 36:24Before the before the game this year, you mean?
- 36:27Yeah, Football or basketball? Basketball, he said in Iowa,
- 36:29wins that 1 by 5. Back before the season,
- 36:32Nebraska's got a better offensive line than Iowa.
- 36:35They got SEC Lake receivers so sip predictions I loved to hear
- 36:41that music to. I think probably to most of the
- 36:44audience feels the same way. Maybe outside of the Husker fans
- 36:47and. There's more in the state than
- 36:49there are, absolutely. Yes.
- 36:50Especially now that we're over in Western.
- 36:52Part of the state, no doubt. So you talked about tip times a
- 36:56little bit earlier. Yes, for the weekend you mean.
- 36:58For the Elite Eight games, this is what it was a year ago and I
- 37:01haven't seen anything definitive, so it's.
- 37:03Probably close, right? I would.
- 37:05Think so, unless they flipped CBS, but I don't think so.
- 37:07They normally have that Sunday window.
- 37:10So the game Saturday last year on TBS we're at 5:00 and then
- 37:148730. And that's central.
- 37:16Central Time? Yep, 5:00 and then 7:30 on
- 37:19Sunday. Then back on CBS it was 120 and
- 37:224:00. Those were the 2 tip times.
- 37:24So anticipate they would be the same this year.
- 37:29I don't think anything has changed that I can think of.
- 37:31And we know CBS wants that window leading into 60 Minutes.
- 37:34Sure they do and they get what they want because they are still
- 37:37the primary holder of this. And we also saw the TV numbers
- 37:41as we just talked about a little bit earlier, what a big, big gap
- 37:44that and Kevin? Harlan has the game tonight.
- 37:46Did I? Did I see that earlier in the
- 37:47week? That sounds right.
- 37:48I think it's Harlan. Harlan and Hummel.
- 37:52Yes, wow. Trent's plays of the day are
- 37:55next. Circus sports, sponsors those.
- 37:59We'll hear who he's playing tonight.
- 38:01When we come back, it's the Iowa sports.
- 38:03Radio Network wrap it up a Sweet 16 edition of Miller and Condon
- 38:07on the Iowa Sports Radio Network.
- 38:09Trent Condon running solo for the final.
- 38:11Ken had to duck out a couple minutes early, but I got my
- 38:14picks of the day coming up for you here today.
- 38:16Watching some baseball this afternoon in early lead as the
- 38:20Pirates and Paul scheme get absolutely obliterated as he
- 38:23doesn't make it out of the first inning.
- 38:25Cubs are underway as well as a trail moving into the top of the
- 38:29third one. Nothing.
- 38:31That's with the lead on that one on a solo home run a little bit
- 38:34earlier on from Joey A Weimer with the blast as a Matthew Boyd
- 38:40got the opening day start for the Cubs.
- 38:42Well, my Twins are starting here, coming up here in about,
- 38:44oh, what, 13 minutes or so? In fact, that is one of my plays
- 38:48of the day. Also underway, a couple of our
- 38:50regional teams, the White Sox have skated out to A1.
- 38:54Nothing lead over the Brew Crew in Milwaukee.
- 38:57In fact, this might be my only day for optimism, you know,
- 39:00spring, spring, whatever the eternal hit.
- 39:04I have no optimism, as I think any of you know about this team
- 39:08and what this squad is for the Minnesota Twins this year.
- 39:11But I like them today, even with the Tyler O'Neill angle, who is
- 39:15homered in six consecutive opening days.
- 39:18By the way, looking for the best price, I shopped around and
- 39:21where did I find it? Yes, that Circus Sports plus 325
- 39:25the price you can get on a Tyler O'Neill home run if you're going
- 39:28to jump aboard with that. I'm going to play the Twins
- 39:30today plus 1/22. I'm going to grab them on the
- 39:34money line and then after that I can probably fade them the rest
- 39:36of the season and might be a very profitable endeavor in the
- 39:40Twins rebuild that is going to be continuing here in the coming
- 39:43months. A couple other plays of baseball
- 39:45tonight. I got Boston going to lay the
- 39:46-152. It's crochet.
- 39:48It was just such an absolute stud.
- 39:51What what happened here with earlier with Paul Skeens.
- 39:53Maybe that should pull me off that one a little bit.
- 39:55We'll lay the -152 with the bow socks and the Rangers tonight
- 39:59plus plus plus 138. Excuse me on that front.
- 40:02Then a base. Prop this evening, a pitcher,
- 40:04prop Yamamoto under 16 1/2 outs. We're going to play that one
- 40:09this evening to the Sweet 16. Gimme Purdue.
- 40:12I'm going to lay the 7 1/2. I think you've heard me mention
- 40:15that through out paid a little extra, but it going to jump on
- 40:18with Illinois plus the 3 1/2 that spreads just going up there
- 40:21a little bit too much -118 with the 3 1/2 with the Elidi.
- 40:24And finally Iowa, Nebraska. This is what you call an
- 40:30emotional hedge. I'm going to take the Huskers.
- 40:34Going to take Nebraska in my pick.
- 40:37Minnesota. Excuse me, Nebraska by this. 1
- 40:401/2 here. The Hawkeyes fall.
- 40:43Got a little extra money in my account.
- 40:44If they win, I will gladly pay for a Hawkeye victory in my
- 40:49Circus Sports Iowa app. That'll do it for today.
- 40:51Back at it tomorrow again, We will be live at Buffalo Wild
- 40:54Wings on Merle Hay. Stop on out opportunity for you
- 40:58to win a Ben McCollum sign basketball, TJ Otzlberger sign
- 41:02basketball. Merle Hay Buffalo Wild Wings.
- 41:04The boys, they are out at Dave and Buster's.
- 41:07They're coming up next right here on the Iowa Sports Radio
- 41:09Network.
