- 0:00Speaker 1: Yeah, that.
- 0:02Speaker 2: Chuck Norris was chasing the Tyrannosaurus Rex.
- 0:05Speaker 1: The rex was not chasing the jeep. Murray, Murray, you there.
- 0:10Speaker 2: You love sandwiches, Huh, Let's go to eighty.
- 0:13Speaker 3: It was bo.
- 0:16Speaker 1: Wow that Prime Time. Maybe I had a crush on
- 0:18Speaker 1: Betty Rubbell.
- 0:19Speaker 2: I honestly, until after the segment ended and we went
- 0:22Speaker 2: to commercial break, had no idea that Jonathan Coachman was black.
- 0:25Speaker 2: He caught them the game last night, although they won
- 0:28Speaker 2: the game.
- 0:29Speaker 1: You're listening just to Gotsen Company.
- 0:32Speaker 2: It is to Godza Company, presented by FanDuel and the
- 0:34Speaker 2: Fandel Sportsbook. Sean Merriman is going to join us in
- 0:38Speaker 2: about fifteen minutes.
- 0:40Speaker 3: Ezy.
- 0:40Speaker 1: I found it funny.
- 0:42Speaker 2: I'm not certain your thoughts on this, but I did
- 0:45Speaker 2: find it funny that Luca, when asked about in a
- 0:49Speaker 2: postgame press conference, asked about the MVP, he said, I
- 0:52Speaker 2: don't think about those things. I'm not thinking about it.
- 0:55Speaker 2: It sure seems like Luca thinks about it an awful lot.
- 0:58Speaker 1: Is he had to be honest.
- 0:59Speaker 4: With you, well, yeah, because he petitioned to get you know,
- 1:02Speaker 4: some sort of override on the sixty five game rule,
- 1:06Speaker 4: and it worked for him and for who was the
- 1:10Speaker 4: other person who worked for Kay Cunningham, Kate Cunningham. That's right,
- 1:13Speaker 4: and so you know it could be him doing that,
- 1:15Speaker 4: it could be his people doing that, but I think
- 1:17Speaker 4: it makes a lot of sense for that to happen. Now,
- 1:19Speaker 4: he wasn't going to win the MVP because he didn't
- 1:22Speaker 4: play right. It wasn't if he played sixty five games
- 1:25Speaker 4: was he going to win the MVP. The trick was
- 1:27Speaker 4: if he had gotten to like sixty nine seventy games
- 1:29Speaker 4: and played the rest of the season, you know, had
- 1:31Speaker 4: a bunch of big scoring outputs, and then probably would
- 1:35Speaker 4: have been considered.
- 1:36Speaker 1: And as it is, he's gonna get fourth place votes.
- 1:38Speaker 4: But what's gonna happen there is he's gonna make All
- 1:41Speaker 4: NBA team. And as a scoring champion, to not make
- 1:46Speaker 4: one of the All NBA team just crazy, Like I
- 1:48Speaker 4: don't think it's ever happened. And so that is all
- 1:52Speaker 4: is right with the NBA statistical world. And you know,
- 1:55Speaker 4: because what people were concerned about to do is, you know,
- 1:58Speaker 4: twenty years from now, we look back and it's like,
- 2:00Speaker 4: wait a second, did Luca play He seemed to lead
- 2:03Speaker 4: the league in scoring? Why wasn't he all these all
- 2:06Speaker 4: NBA teams, It doesn't make any sense. It doesn't represent
- 2:08Speaker 4: that season properly, and so now we can at least
- 2:11Speaker 4: represent the season properly.
- 2:13Speaker 1: Except for one guy, Anthony Edwards.
- 2:17Speaker 4: That way does appeal, and he did not get to
- 2:20Speaker 4: the sixty five game threshold, so he won't be on
- 2:22Speaker 4: any of those teams, which is crazy because I don't
- 2:26Speaker 4: know about you, Stu, but like, Anthony Edwards is the
- 2:28Speaker 4: one sort of lurker at all times that I feel
- 2:32Speaker 4: like can win or lead a team passed in any
- 2:36Speaker 4: playoff series to a win.
- 2:37Speaker 1: Like he's just he's that good.
- 2:40Speaker 4: But he's also that surprising when he decides to turn
- 2:43Speaker 4: it on and when he does, it's just like he
- 2:45Speaker 4: can do it with threes, he can do it with drives,
- 2:46Speaker 4: he can do it with defense, and he seems to
- 2:49Speaker 4: motivate his guys to play super hard around him when
- 2:53Speaker 4: he is turning it on like that. So, I mean,
- 2:56Speaker 4: I don't know what the exact detail was. It's why
- 2:59Speaker 4: his circumstance wasn't special enough to get that sort of
- 3:02Speaker 4: waiver if you will.
- 3:03Speaker 1: Into the sixty five game group.
- 3:06Speaker 4: But it's pretty silly for him to not be included
- 3:09Speaker 4: on one of those teams.
- 3:10Speaker 2: Who is the player that has the most amount of
- 3:12Speaker 2: pressure on him in this postseason? Because I would say
- 3:15Speaker 2: it's Jalen Brunson is yeah, wow.
- 3:19Speaker 1: I mean the Knicks got him.
- 3:21Speaker 2: He's exceeded expectations they got to the Eastern Conference finals
- 3:24Speaker 2: a year ago. But eventually he's got to be a
- 3:26Speaker 2: guy that can get his team to the NBA Finals.
- 3:29Speaker 1: He has to be well.
- 3:30Speaker 4: I think the narrative around the Knicks was Brunson's doing enough.
- 3:34Speaker 4: He needs the guys around him to pick it up.
- 3:37Speaker 4: He needs Karl Anthony Towns to be better. He needs
- 3:39Speaker 4: perhaps I would say maybe his defense could be better
- 3:42Speaker 4: in Jalen Brunston. But I don't think there are people saying, Brunton,
- 3:45Speaker 4: you got to get us to the finals. I think
- 3:47Speaker 4: it's the folks around him got to get him to
- 3:48Speaker 4: the finals. I think it's Mike Brown has to figure
- 3:50Speaker 4: out a way, you know, the right rotations and things
- 3:54Speaker 4: like that. Who has the most pressure man, That's a
- 3:57Speaker 4: great question, because you know who seems to be putting
- 3:59Speaker 4: more and more pressure run himself is Victor Wembinyama, Right,
- 4:02Speaker 4: But that's more.
- 4:03Speaker 2: Easy just back to just back to Brunstop. Sorry to
- 4:05Speaker 2: cut you off to Brunson for a second. That's a
- 4:08Speaker 2: convenient spot for Brunson to be in where if you
- 4:10Speaker 2: get there, you get all the glory, and if you don't,
- 4:13Speaker 2: it's somebody else's fault. No, you're the best player of
- 4:16Speaker 2: the New York Knicks. Get that team to the NBA Finals.
- 4:19Speaker 2: The fans have been starving for it forever.
- 4:21Speaker 5: Brunson has reached almost untouchable status in New York because.
- 4:26Speaker 1: The team's gonna change that.
- 4:28Speaker 5: The team was irrelevant for so long and then he
- 4:32Speaker 5: comes here and their expectations change. And to Izzy's point,
- 4:35Speaker 5: I think there is more pressure on Karl Anthony Towns
- 4:39Speaker 5: to kind of fit into this Knicks puzzle this postseason
- 4:43Speaker 5: then there is on Jalen Brunson, who Knicks fans have
- 4:46Speaker 5: kind of come to expect that they're gonna get whatever
- 4:49Speaker 5: production they get from Jalen Brunson, and everybody else kind
- 4:52Speaker 5: of has to raise their performance. Like I think mckel
- 4:54Speaker 5: bridges has more pressure on him this postseason than somebody
- 4:57Speaker 5: like Jalen Brunson.
- 4:58Speaker 2: So that's funny, Isy That all comes with expectations, right,
- 5:01Speaker 2: the Knick fans were not expecting this from Jalen Brunson.
- 5:05Speaker 2: They were expecting more from Karl Anthony Town So maybe
- 5:08Speaker 2: that factors into it a little bit.
- 5:10Speaker 4: Yeah, and look, I don't think he is free of pressure.
- 5:14Speaker 4: I don't want to say that. You know, he's playing
- 5:16Speaker 4: with house money and can bomb in the playoffs and
- 5:19Speaker 4: nobody would blame him. But so far, if you look
- 5:23Speaker 4: at what he did during the regular season pretty much.
- 5:25Speaker 1: The exact same season as last.
- 5:27Speaker 4: Year, twenty exact and points wise to a t twenty
- 5:29Speaker 4: six points per game. And so if he now does
- 5:33Speaker 4: the same that he did in the playoffs last year,
- 5:35Speaker 4: which is raise his game. You average almost thirty last
- 5:38Speaker 4: year and you know, shot even better from the field.
- 5:42Speaker 4: And so for him, if he falls off of that pace, yes,
- 5:47Speaker 4: you can absolutely blame him. Hey, you didn't do at
- 5:49Speaker 4: least do what you did last year, how do you
- 5:50Speaker 4: expect us to go further? But to say that he
- 5:54Speaker 4: has another gear in him that he needs to average,
- 5:55Speaker 4: I don't know, something like thirty five points a game
- 5:58Speaker 4: in order to carry that team. I think that's probably
- 6:00Speaker 4: a little bit too much pressure on him.
- 6:01Speaker 5: Is he over the past like two weeks If you
- 6:03Speaker 5: look at some of the Knicks usage ratings. The Jalen
- 6:07Speaker 5: Brunt say Karl Anthony Towns pick and roll has gone
- 6:11Speaker 5: way up. And there's two sides of that conversation where
- 6:14Speaker 5: it's like, did Mike Brown just not realize that it's
- 6:18Speaker 5: one of the most effective things that this Knicks team has,
- 6:21Speaker 5: or the Knicks were just saving it for the playoffs
- 6:24Speaker 5: and gonna unveil like this high usage rate for the
- 6:28Speaker 5: playoffs and they were just kind of fine tuning it
- 6:30Speaker 5: the last two weeks. Neither of those two sides really
- 6:34Speaker 5: makes too much sense to me.
- 6:36Speaker 1: I don't think either of those are the case.
- 6:37Speaker 4: I don't think he was holding back because I do
- 6:39Speaker 4: remember them talking about, you know, the two man game
- 6:41Speaker 4: between those two and how simple it's been and how
- 6:45Speaker 4: simply effective it's been. And it feels like a late
- 6:49Speaker 4: season discovery, right. It feels like something where had they
- 6:53Speaker 4: been doing it all season long, maybe teams would have
- 6:56Speaker 4: warmed up to it and figured it out. I don't
- 6:58Speaker 4: think that they were holding back from it. I just
- 7:00Speaker 4: think they sort of discovered, hey, why don't we do
- 7:02Speaker 4: this again? Like it just seems pretty simple. And if
- 7:05Speaker 4: you think about Jalen Brunson, like he does great work
- 7:09Speaker 4: in the ISO, he does great work once he's you know,
- 7:11Speaker 4: in the paint with some footwork and everything else and
- 7:13Speaker 4: getting his shots off. The simple two man game I
- 7:16Speaker 4: don't think is something that has really been explored that
- 7:19Speaker 4: thoroughly with those two And in part, like Karl Anthony
- 7:22Speaker 4: Towns doesn't seem like that you know, classic roller, right,
- 7:25Speaker 4: He's more of a fade to the corner type of guy.
- 7:28Speaker 4: But if he mixes it up and Jalen finds him
- 7:31Speaker 4: in the right spots, like it seems like it's an.
- 7:33Speaker 1: Impossible thing to defend. It's pretty simple.
- 7:35Speaker 2: But so they just they just stumbled into something that worked.
- 7:37Speaker 2: I mean, is that really right?
- 7:39Speaker 5: I'm feeling worse about this Knicks playoff run as we're
- 7:42Speaker 5: getting into the playoffs because if they just happened to
- 7:46Speaker 5: stumble into something that worked, terrible is he The guys
- 7:50Speaker 5: in three twelve on the Chase Bridge at Madison Square
- 7:54Speaker 5: Garden all season have been saying, Hey, Jalen Brunson, Karl
- 7:57Speaker 5: Anthony Towns, let's get them involved in the pick and roll.
- 7:59Speaker 5: And then 'st two weeks of the season the coaches
- 8:01Speaker 5: are like, hey, we might have something that works here.
- 8:03Speaker 5: What the fans have been screaming this on tire.
- 8:05Speaker 1: The summer season.
- 8:06Speaker 2: They're paying Mike Brown all this money in the meantime,
- 8:08Speaker 2: some fan from fucking Section three twelve could have figured
- 8:11Speaker 2: this out.
- 8:11Speaker 1: I mean, no, sometimes you're right.
- 8:13Speaker 4: Sometimes you overthink some stuff and when you've got you know,
- 8:15Speaker 4: you're brought into this nicked situation to it's finals or bust.
- 8:21Speaker 4: As a head coach, maybe you overthink things, right, Like,
- 8:23Speaker 4: look at what the Miami Heat did this year. It's
- 8:25Speaker 4: a completely different offense that than what they used to have,
- 8:27Speaker 4: and it was like they barely set any screens. I
- 8:30Speaker 4: was saying, my the whole time, if these guys make
- 8:32Speaker 4: the playoffs, go back to the old offense, shock the
- 8:34Speaker 4: hell out of it out of the other team, set
- 8:37Speaker 4: screens everywhere.
- 8:38Speaker 1: Sometimes you just trip upon.
- 8:39Speaker 4: Something where you're just like, you know what, we've ignored
- 8:43Speaker 4: this for too long. We've been overthinking it. Let's just
- 8:45Speaker 4: go with what works. That couldn't be the case here,
- 8:48Speaker 4: or they could have been super slick. I've been holding
- 8:49Speaker 4: back all season long that I don't believe.
- 8:51Speaker 2: Yeah, no, no, it's not They're not saving it for
- 8:53Speaker 2: the postseason.
- 8:54Speaker 1: The old pick and roll. No, it's not this pick
- 8:57Speaker 1: and then rule. Ah, we've got a great idea here.
- 9:00Speaker 5: Oh my god, they're pulling out the pick and roll?
- 9:03Speaker 5: Is he in terms of expectations? And this one's tougher
- 9:06Speaker 5: because they're in the playing game tonight. Where do where
- 9:09Speaker 5: NBA fans and the NBA media at with Devin Booker
- 9:14Speaker 5: right now? Because he seems like for what people thought
- 9:17Speaker 5: he would be and what it looked like he was
- 9:19Speaker 5: going to be at one point in his career, we're
- 9:21Speaker 5: pretty far off that. And I don't want to say disappointment,
- 9:25Speaker 5: but you know, since since they had that finals appearance,
- 9:28Speaker 5: he really hasn't done much in Phoenix.
- 9:30Speaker 1: That's a great like that.
- 9:32Speaker 4: So that's what you think, like you think as just
- 9:35Speaker 4: a fan that from a distance, it feels like he
- 9:38Speaker 4: has been largely disappointing since basically that twenty one Finals run.
- 9:42Speaker 5: It felt like he was going to have his moment
- 9:44Speaker 5: as one of the faces of this next generation of
- 9:47Speaker 5: the NBA. And you know, when Bin Yama, Anthony Edwards,
- 9:51Speaker 5: everybody is seemingly passing book where book was at.
- 9:57Speaker 4: I thought this too for a little bit, right, and
- 9:59Speaker 4: then I just go back and I sort of watch
- 10:01Speaker 4: him play a little bit and then go back and
- 10:03Speaker 4: look at his stats, and he has not fallen off,
- 10:07Speaker 4: like his percentages have fallen off a little bit the
- 10:09Speaker 4: last couple of years when there's.
- 10:11Speaker 1: More required of him.
- 10:13Speaker 4: But the thing that I realized about Devin Booker during
- 10:17Speaker 4: the Olympics was that he doesn't need to be to
- 10:20Speaker 4: look at me superstar. He doesn't need to be the
- 10:23Speaker 4: I want to lead the league in scoring superstar, like
- 10:25Speaker 4: he just wants to win. He had been, you know,
- 10:28Speaker 4: miserable early on in his career where he was pretty
- 10:30Speaker 4: much irrelevant and not winning. Then you get Chris Paul
- 10:32Speaker 4: in their winning and you know, he has the Olympic
- 10:34Speaker 4: experience and he plays that sort of key cog role,
- 10:38Speaker 4: utility knife role, and now he's you know, he did
- 10:40Speaker 4: the Kevin Durant thing and it didn't work out, and
- 10:42Speaker 4: he's just kind of plugging along, Like I think he's
- 10:45Speaker 4: just sort of waiting for the next rebuild in Phoenix
- 10:48Speaker 4: to happen and show that he's still in good form,
- 10:51Speaker 4: because yeah, I think he's he's just been doing exactly that.
- 10:54Speaker 1: He's been plugging.
- 10:55Speaker 4: Along, doing his job and not really you know, causing
- 10:58Speaker 4: any fires. And so I think think that from a
- 11:00Speaker 4: distance makes it seem like he's not performing.
- 11:03Speaker 1: But look at his numbers. He's been doing fine, is he?
- 11:05Speaker 2: When I originally asked you that question, the player with
- 11:08Speaker 2: the most amount of pressure headed into the postseason, you
- 11:10Speaker 2: I cut you off. You were headed down a Webbin
- 11:12Speaker 2: Yama path? Where were you headed there?
- 11:14Speaker 4: Well, because the more you listen to analysts discuss who
- 11:18Speaker 4: they think is going to win, the more people you
- 11:20Speaker 4: have saying the Spurs are the favorite.
- 11:23Speaker 1: And that's a scary proposition.
- 11:25Speaker 4: If you're this team where he's an experience, Right, Yeah,
- 11:28Speaker 4: it takes one rolled ankle for Victor Webbin Yama and
- 11:31Speaker 4: now all of a sudden, your entire prospects are different.
- 11:34Speaker 4: And so, not only does he have to perform, he's
- 11:37Speaker 4: got to remain healthy, he's got to fight through, you know, fatigue,
- 11:41Speaker 4: he's got to fight through game plans that he probably
- 11:45Speaker 4: hasn't seen before over a seven game series in the
- 11:48Speaker 4: regular season. And so, and he's also accepting any and
- 11:52Speaker 4: all of that pressure and so and he watched some
- 11:55Speaker 4: of it, putting some of it on himself one hundred percent.
- 11:57Speaker 4: So I think that in itself when when the world
- 12:01Speaker 4: wants you to succeed and you haven't done this yet,
- 12:04Speaker 4: it's it's a lot of pressure.
- 12:05Speaker 1: And he's I mean, I wouldn't call him a favorite.
- 12:08Speaker 1: I would call okay See the favorite.
- 12:10Speaker 4: I wouldn't call him obviously a favorite to get out
- 12:11Speaker 4: of the West because okay See is in the same conference,
- 12:14Speaker 4: but seems to be a lot of pressure on him.
- 12:17Speaker 1: And then I would say second is probably Mike Brown, right.
- 12:21Speaker 2: Not Jalen Brunson, because Brunson, yes, but Mike bro Yeah,
- 12:25Speaker 2: Mike Brown has pressure because, as Taylor pointed out, there's
- 12:27Speaker 2: fans in section three twelve, we can coach this team better.
- 12:29Speaker 1: I mean, how about that.
- 12:31Speaker 5: I think Josh Hart might have more pressure on him
- 12:34Speaker 5: this this playoffs than Jalen Brunson. Where Josh Hart's a
- 12:37Speaker 5: forty percent three point shooter this season, and if you're
- 12:40Speaker 5: looking at it, you're like, I don't really trust that
- 12:43Speaker 5: you're going to be a forty percent three point shooter
- 12:45Speaker 5: when it actually matters despite what your numbers say.
- 12:48Speaker 4: That's the thing about the Knicks, Like you go up
- 12:50Speaker 4: and down that roster and it's like, Okay, who has
- 12:53Speaker 4: room to improve? Still, who has you know is not
- 12:56Speaker 4: butting their head up against the ceiling of their potential,
- 12:59Speaker 4: and I don't. So it's basically Karl Anthony Towns, right,
- 13:02Speaker 4: because again, how much more can you ask of Jalen Brunson,
- 13:06Speaker 4: How much more can you really ask of og An Andobi?
- 13:09Speaker 4: Michael Bridges maybe, but that's more based on what he
- 13:12Speaker 4: was traded for and not really his NBA resume. So
- 13:17Speaker 4: and Josh Hart absolutely, I mean he's been banging his
- 13:20Speaker 4: head against his ceiling for years now. He's not getting
- 13:22Speaker 4: any better, and so it just it just makes you
- 13:24Speaker 4: wonder how they're going to turn that on. And it's
- 13:26Speaker 4: got to be Carl Anthony Towns, give me more than
- 13:29Speaker 4: twenty points a game.
- 13:30Speaker 2: You're not going to be surprised if the Spurs do
- 13:32Speaker 2: it this year. Right, you can't be surprised. He's that talented,
- 13:35Speaker 2: he's that good, that kid.
- 13:36Speaker 4: I wouldn't be shocked, only because I keep looking back
- 13:39Speaker 4: at the the fifteen fourteen to fifteen Warriors that just
- 13:43Speaker 4: shocked the world and won that championship, and nobody saw
- 13:46Speaker 4: that coming except for maybe Ethan Strauss, And I think
- 13:50Speaker 4: it's possible when you have an overwhelming talent like Victor
- 13:53Speaker 4: Wibin Yama and a group that has been really tight
- 13:56Speaker 4: like the Spurs team.
- 13:57Speaker 1: It's a different type of formula, but it's a similar
- 13:59Speaker 1: formula to that Warriors team.
- 14:00Speaker 4: So I think they can do it, but I think
- 14:02Speaker 4: they've just got too many huge hurdles.
- 14:05Speaker 1: I think.
- 14:05Speaker 4: Okay, see, he's a huge one. I think Denver is
- 14:08Speaker 4: a huge one. And I just have a feeling he
- 14:11Speaker 4: might make the Western Conference finals, but I don't think
- 14:13Speaker 4: he'll make it all the way to the finals.
- 14:14Speaker 2: But he pulls in the fringe fan right, like he's
- 14:17Speaker 2: giving me when the Knicks get eliminated, I'll still be
- 14:19Speaker 2: intrigued by the NBA playoffs.
- 14:21Speaker 5: Whoa why are you eliminating the Knicks?
- 14:23Speaker 2: I'm sorry, let me rephrase that, if the Knicks get eliminated,
- 14:27Speaker 2: I'll still be intrigued and interested in the NBA playoffs
- 14:30Speaker 2: as long as Wemby is still involved in the NBA playoffs.
- 14:33Speaker 2: He's giving me reasons to watch past my best team.
- 14:36Speaker 1: Does that make sense?
- 14:37Speaker 4: It does, And frankly, I don't think we've hit the
- 14:40Speaker 4: high point in terms of Victor Webbin Yama, like advertisements
- 14:44Speaker 4: getting in your face, like there's still a level of
- 14:47Speaker 4: fan or level of consumer that he hasn't even reached,
- 14:52Speaker 4: and it's going to be wildly intriguing when they do.
- 14:55Speaker 4: The Remind everybody how big he is. Remind everybody, Wow,
- 14:59Speaker 4: this giant of a man who is gonna come in
- 15:01Speaker 4: and dominate the NBA. Like some of that stuff is
- 15:03Speaker 4: still it's still yet to reach people. They're just like,
- 15:06Speaker 4: I'll watch an alien play in the NBA.
- 15:08Speaker 1: Sure, why not?
- 15:09Speaker 3: Yes?

- 17:21Speaker 2: Sean Merriman is a former All Pro linebacker Chargers Great
- 17:25Speaker 2: played eight years in the NFL, three time Pro Bowler,
- 17:29Speaker 2: and he joins us right now. Sean, How you doing, man?
- 17:32Speaker 3: Hey, what's up on man? How you doing?
- 17:34Speaker 2: I'm doing well, buddy. So we're a week away from
- 17:36Speaker 2: the NFL Draft, and I'm wondering if you remember what
- 17:39Speaker 2: it is you were doing a week out of your
- 17:42Speaker 2: NFL draft, the draft that you were taking in. What
- 17:45Speaker 2: was it like the week out and then the week
- 17:47Speaker 2: leading up to the NFL draft?
- 17:50Speaker 7: You know, like when the draft comes around, it's it's
- 17:53Speaker 7: probably the best time because all the work is done, right,
- 17:56Speaker 7: I mean, so as you leave college, you jump right
- 17:59Speaker 7: into your workouts, getting ready for combine, getting ready for
- 18:02Speaker 7: your interviews, finding the agent. I mean, it's just it's NonStop.
- 18:05Speaker 7: And then the week or two before the draft, you're like, oh,
- 18:07Speaker 7: I'm chilling right. All my work is done now my
- 18:10Speaker 7: name just got to get called and we're all good.
- 18:12Speaker 7: So it's it's a bit of like just a celebration
- 18:15Speaker 7: from the last week or two before the draft for
- 18:16Speaker 7: the players.
- 18:18Speaker 2: What was the first thing that Sean Merriman purchased once
- 18:21Speaker 2: he was drafted to the NFL.
- 18:26Speaker 7: A wagon a G five hundred, and I sent it
- 18:29Speaker 7: off to West Coast Remember West Coast Customs back when it.
- 18:32Speaker 3: Was big there.
- 18:33Speaker 7: Yeah, man, I got that thing all lights out out, man,
- 18:37Speaker 7: TVs and everything else.
- 18:38Speaker 3: So that was it.
- 18:40Speaker 1: That was it, West Coast Customs. That was the MTV show, right,
- 18:43Speaker 1: that was it? Yeah, yeah, yeah, Okay, do you regret
- 18:47Speaker 1: it or no? You're good with it?
- 18:49Speaker 8: No?
- 18:49Speaker 3: It was the best.
- 18:50Speaker 7: I mean, you know, like I grew up in PG
- 18:53Speaker 7: Prince George County, Maryland, man, like you know, you started
- 18:56Speaker 7: seeing shows on TV, like, Okay, the first thing I'm
- 18:58Speaker 7: gona do when I get some money, I am doing
- 19:00Speaker 7: that was on this show ring. I didn't give it.
- 19:04Speaker 7: I didn't go damn what that thing looked like. I
- 19:06Speaker 7: was like, I'm getting my car done by West Coast cost.
- 19:09Speaker 7: It turns out, man, they did a really good job.
- 19:11Speaker 1: Sean Real.
- 19:12Speaker 4: I don't think you were ever on any really bad teams,
- 19:14Speaker 4: were you?
- 19:17Speaker 1: No?
- 19:17Speaker 3: Not not right, man, they kind of struggle. You know.
- 19:20Speaker 7: When I got to Buffalo my last couple of years,
- 19:22Speaker 7: I got I basically got waves and or you know,
- 19:25Speaker 7: in people's eyes, traded right, and they wasn't playing that well.
- 19:29Speaker 7: But I wasn't on that team. Uh. And then the
- 19:31Speaker 7: following year we actually started like five and ohero and
- 19:33Speaker 7: then we all got hurt, did everything with one another
- 19:37Speaker 7: the bridge.
- 19:38Speaker 4: Okay, So the reason I asked that is because I'm
- 19:40Speaker 4: they were down here in South Florida and the Dolphins
- 19:42Speaker 4: are going through some transitions. But they've got Devon a
- 19:45Speaker 4: Chan there, and the GM has says that he's off
- 19:48Speaker 4: the table, he's not available for trades. But if I'm
- 19:51Speaker 4: a Chan and I'm playing for a team with no expectations,
- 19:54Speaker 4: and I know they're gonna work me like crazy, Am
- 19:56Speaker 4: I excited about that because I might get you know,
- 19:59Speaker 4: stats and get my money down the road. Or is
- 20:01Speaker 4: it just feel like a wasted year where they're just
- 20:03Speaker 4: kind of work overworking you.
- 20:05Speaker 7: It's hard, man, And one of the hardest things to
- 20:07Speaker 7: do is to show up the work that every day
- 20:09Speaker 7: with a good attitude knowing.
- 20:10Speaker 3: You got sucked. Right, Yeah, I mean it is.
- 20:13Speaker 7: It's tough because the losing attitudes and negativity in the
- 20:17Speaker 7: locker room. You know, the coaches don't know if they're
- 20:20Speaker 7: going to get fired week to week or year to year.
- 20:22Speaker 7: It's just it's like a dark cloud. And so to
- 20:26Speaker 7: ask somebody, first of all, football is an emotional game,
- 20:28Speaker 7: is passionate. You got to have like a good attitude
- 20:31Speaker 7: to go out there and run your body into another
- 20:33Speaker 7: human band full speed. And so when you walk into
- 20:36Speaker 7: a negative situation, you're like, Okay.
- 20:39Speaker 3: How do I do this?
- 20:40Speaker 7: How do I go put my body on the line,
- 20:42Speaker 7: knowing that we're not gonna win?
- 20:45Speaker 2: Sean, you played with Philip Rivers, and I'm wondering when
- 20:48Speaker 2: he announced that he was coming back to start a
- 20:51Speaker 2: couple of games this year, what was your reaction to that.
- 20:55Speaker 7: To be honest, man, I wasn't shocked because I was Whitfield.
- 20:58Speaker 7: I was with Field doing that. To know Gas's Hall
- 21:00Speaker 7: of Fame induction, I can so me and him, Drew
- 21:04Speaker 7: Brees Lt, you know, Gates were all kind of circled
- 21:07Speaker 7: up and talking, and you know, Phil was talking in
- 21:10Speaker 7: the present tension, right, like a lot of us, you know,
- 21:12Speaker 7: we're retired, Like okay, remember this. When this happened in
- 21:15Speaker 7: this play, in this game, Phil had just the same animation,
- 21:18Speaker 7: the same passion and energy he talks with. It just
- 21:21Speaker 7: seemed like he was ready to go out there and play.
- 21:23Speaker 7: So I didn't pick up on the conversation until it
- 21:27Speaker 7: was announced. Then it made din.
- 21:28Speaker 3: It made sense.
- 21:30Speaker 7: Sean.
- 21:30Speaker 5: It feels like there's a lack of hype around this draft,
- 21:33Speaker 5: and I think it's because of the lack of quarterbacks
- 21:35Speaker 5: or the lack of high level quarterbacks in the draft.
- 21:38Speaker 5: How are you looking at this draft as a former
- 21:40Speaker 5: defensive guy.
- 21:42Speaker 7: That's always the case, right, And with the NFL this,
- 21:46Speaker 7: and and I wouldn't even say just with.
- 21:48Speaker 3: The NFL, but fans in general.
- 21:49Speaker 7: Quarterback like that, that big name, that Keystone quarterback drives everything.
- 21:54Speaker 7: It drives fans, it drives jerseys, it drive TV revenue.
- 21:58Speaker 7: It all starts with the quarterback. So never is not there, right,
- 22:02Speaker 7: Whenever it's not there, then everything starts to kind of
- 22:06Speaker 7: dwindle down. I mean, that's that's the same reason why
- 22:08Speaker 7: the Super Bowl wasn't talked about as much, right because
- 22:11Speaker 7: they didn't have a pass from the Holmes. They didn't
- 22:13Speaker 7: have a Joe Barrow, they didn't have a Josh Allen,
- 22:16Speaker 7: and so everything is driven by.
- 22:18Speaker 3: The quarterback position.
- 22:19Speaker 7: But there's some damn good players coming out in this draft.
- 22:22Speaker 5: Man.
- 22:22Speaker 7: And by the way, these some of these guys are
- 22:25Speaker 7: going to be future Hall of Famers one day, I think,
- 22:27Speaker 7: I mean, it's just given. But man, I think there's
- 22:31Speaker 7: a turn, there's a tide happening right now where they
- 22:34Speaker 7: got to start highlighting some of these other guys. Everything
- 22:37Speaker 7: can't be revolved around the quarterback.
- 22:38Speaker 1: Position, Sean.
- 22:41Speaker 4: Speaking of the Chargers, they got ex Miami head coach
- 22:43Speaker 4: Mike McDaniel down there as the offensive coordinator.
- 22:46Speaker 1: I'm a little over there, I shouldn't say down there.
- 22:49Speaker 1: I'm kind of.
- 22:50Speaker 4: Excited to see it because I really like McDaniel and
- 22:52Speaker 4: I like the idea of what he can do with
- 22:55Speaker 4: Justin Herbert there. How much do you think Justin Herbert
- 22:58Speaker 4: still has an in terms of before he hits his
- 23:01Speaker 4: ceiling to improve and how much do you think McDaniel
- 23:03Speaker 4: can help him out with that?
- 23:05Speaker 7: So many and then and then let me tell you,
- 23:07Speaker 7: Mike McDaniels was very smart to do this. And you know,
- 23:11Speaker 7: you look around and he has some opportunities, some meetings.
- 23:13Speaker 7: I think he would declined a meeting or two to
- 23:15Speaker 7: go when he had an opportunity for a head coaching job.
- 23:18Speaker 7: You don't want to take a head coaching job. There's
- 23:20Speaker 7: going to get you fired in a year or two anyway, right, Like,
- 23:23Speaker 7: you just don't want to. And you got an opportunity
- 23:26Speaker 7: to go and coach a quarterback, put yourself, put your
- 23:30Speaker 7: put your put your name back in the hat after
- 23:32Speaker 7: the next season or two, and go to a team
- 23:36Speaker 7: and a position that you want this time, right, not
- 23:39Speaker 7: that you have to take because because the opportunity is there.
- 23:42Speaker 7: So I just think he was smart in.
- 23:44Speaker 3: A way did it. And also like kudos to to to.
- 23:47Speaker 7: Jim hobback, right because you're letting the big personality come
- 23:51Speaker 7: in there and kind of drive things and and Jim
- 23:55Speaker 7: Hoball's are a really big personality too, man. So I
- 23:58Speaker 7: just think that they put winning between the two and
- 24:01Speaker 7: and and set themselves out for the future.
- 24:04Speaker 2: But justin Herbert has to win now, right, Sean, Like
- 24:06Speaker 2: he's run out of excuses you have the head coach,
- 24:09Speaker 2: you have the offensive genius. You have to start winning
- 24:11Speaker 2: playoff games, right.
- 24:13Speaker 7: Yeah, well, of course that dark cloud is always going
- 24:15Speaker 7: to be over rhum until he gets deep in the playoffs. There,
- 24:18Speaker 7: minim I'm not just saying win the ring. I'm talking
- 24:20Speaker 7: about like at least an AFC championship game. But you
- 24:23Speaker 7: also got to remember the two best tackles and football
- 24:26Speaker 7: went down last year for the season, that that interior,
- 24:30Speaker 7: that that they didn't have anybody at the center position.
- 24:32Speaker 7: You're starting running back and your number, your first round
- 24:35Speaker 7: draft pick all went down one for the season, the
- 24:38Speaker 7: other one for half the season. And so if you
- 24:41Speaker 7: started looking at that again, because we all and I'm
- 24:44Speaker 7: guilty this too, because I played against some of the
- 24:47Speaker 7: best quarterbacks ever, we got to start taking a little
- 24:51Speaker 7: bit out of the quarterback's hands. Because if you just
- 24:54Speaker 7: if you want to sit back and say, you know what,
- 24:56Speaker 7: this team didn't play well because justin Herbert well Man,
- 24:59Speaker 7: you lost re Pro bowlers, right, you lost three or
- 25:02Speaker 7: four Pro Bowlers on one offense in one year. I mean,
- 25:05Speaker 7: that just doesn't happen. So what do you do, right,
- 25:08Speaker 7: what do you do as a quarterback? I mean, he
- 25:10Speaker 7: got tax. Justin Herbert literally got tax last year because
- 25:14Speaker 7: they couldn't block for him. So but yeah, I agree,
- 25:16Speaker 7: he has a dark cloud until he gets deep in
- 25:18Speaker 7: the playoffs.
- 25:19Speaker 1: There's another quarterback.
- 25:20Speaker 4: There's a whole locker room that has this weird dark
- 25:22Speaker 4: cloud over and that's in Philadelphia. You've got the AJ
- 25:24Speaker 4: Brown situation, which you know there GM's saying he's a
- 25:28Speaker 4: part of the Eagles, but everybody seems to be expecting
- 25:30Speaker 4: him to be moved. What do you make of that,
- 25:32Speaker 4: because it doesn't seem like they're very often is teams
- 25:34Speaker 4: with this much dysfunction that still have success, that has won.
- 25:38Speaker 1: They should have won two super Bowls the last five years.
- 25:41Speaker 3: I mean yeah.
- 25:43Speaker 7: But again and while we you know how the damper
- 25:46Speaker 7: is really on them, we talk about his dark clouds,
- 25:48Speaker 7: but really, because Jalen Hurts, you know, that's that's where
- 25:51Speaker 7: it stars.
- 25:52Speaker 3: I'm not saying you don't.
- 25:53Speaker 7: Put fingers point fingers at AJ Brown, you don't point
- 25:55Speaker 7: fingers that you know, other other positions or even coordinators.
- 25:59Speaker 7: But the dark cloud is really around Jalen Hurts and
- 26:02Speaker 7: whether he's an elite quarterback or note right, that's where
- 26:05Speaker 7: it starts at Now you can kind of trickle down. Okay,
- 26:07Speaker 7: let's look at daj brown situation. Is he is he
- 26:10Speaker 7: a problem in locker room where he's just you know,
- 26:12Speaker 7: there's animosity between him and Jalen Hurts. Can we keep
- 26:15Speaker 7: him here and risk running to the same problems again
- 26:18Speaker 7: next year? You can start looking at other things, But
- 26:20Speaker 7: the real question mark is on Jalen Hurts and is
- 26:23Speaker 7: an elite quarterback or nine?
- 26:25Speaker 3: What do you think? I think he's above average. I
- 26:29Speaker 3: think I don't think he's elite. I think he's above average.
- 26:32Speaker 7: But again, you know, you give an elite quarterback that roster,
- 26:39Speaker 7: they're gonna be right, they're gonna win two or three
- 26:41Speaker 7: super Bowls because if you look at both sides of
- 26:43Speaker 7: ballin and who they have and what they have from
- 26:45Speaker 7: the interior d linemen and pass rushers to dbs to
- 26:49Speaker 7: a running back. I mean, you give an elite quarterback
- 26:52Speaker 7: that roster, and you got you two or three super
- 26:54Speaker 7: bowls within a five year period that you know, you.
- 26:57Speaker 3: Get Patrick Holmes, you give Joe Barrow, you give.
- 26:59Speaker 7: Any one of the Josh Allen, you give any one.
- 27:01Speaker 3: Of these guys that roster. They got a couple of
- 27:03Speaker 3: Super Bowls within five years. So yeah, I think he's
- 27:05Speaker 3: above average. I don't think he's the league.
- 27:08Speaker 2: Who's the quarterback that Sean Merriman never sacked, never got
- 27:11Speaker 2: to that he wishes he had sacked.
- 27:14Speaker 1: Oh man, did you actually miss it?
- 27:18Speaker 2: I think, yeah, they all have one.
- 27:22Speaker 7: Yeah, I got them all. I got all the ones
- 27:26Speaker 7: that at least that I wanted to get, right, all right,
- 27:28Speaker 7: So let me try this.
- 27:30Speaker 1: Let me try it this way.
- 27:31Speaker 2: Which quarterback gave you the most delight when you sacked it?
- 27:35Speaker 3: Oh? Tom?
- 27:36Speaker 7: I mean, you guys can't see me, but I'm smiling
- 27:41Speaker 7: right now?
- 27:45Speaker 4: Is it because they were so hell bent on protecting
- 27:48Speaker 4: him at all costs because obviously he didn't really move.
- 27:51Speaker 7: Yeah, protecting him, but also to man, just the competitive
- 27:54Speaker 7: nature of him, and you knew how bad he how
- 27:56Speaker 7: much he hated to lose, how much he hated to
- 27:58Speaker 7: get hit or to you know, one of my years
- 28:02Speaker 7: in Buffalo, I mean we made him, We beat him
- 28:04Speaker 7: in Buffalo, he threw four interceptions. I mean that was
- 28:06Speaker 7: so gratifying because he's so great, so you know how
- 28:10Speaker 7: much he killed him inside to not only lose that game,
- 28:12Speaker 7: but it also pro four pigs.
- 28:14Speaker 1: I love it. Sean.
- 28:15Speaker 5: We were around the water cooler earlier, and my prediction
- 28:18Speaker 5: was you were going to say Eli Manning just because
- 28:20Speaker 5: he had that whole moment where he spurned San Diego
- 28:24Speaker 5: on Draft night.
- 28:25Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 28:26Speaker 7: No, I didn't have a problem with it. But I
- 28:27Speaker 7: did San Diego a favor. You know, I definitely hooked
- 28:33Speaker 7: the fans up. I could tell you one thing after
- 28:35Speaker 7: we played him. I had a bunch of free drinks
- 28:37Speaker 7: that night when I went out after the game.
- 28:38Speaker 3: So we're happy, all right.
- 28:41Speaker 2: So, Sean, we appreciate the time.
- 28:43Speaker 1: I'm going to ask you here.
- 28:44Speaker 2: I'm going to give you my Mount Rushmore of Maryland
- 28:47Speaker 2: Sports figures, Okay, University of Maryland where you played. I
- 28:50Speaker 2: want your Mount Rushmore. And then we're gonna ask Ai
- 28:54Speaker 2: Colin cowhurt. Okay, so I will start. You want to
- 28:57Speaker 2: go first?
- 28:59Speaker 3: You gotta go ahead? Yeah, all right, So I.
- 29:01Speaker 2: Would go my Mount Rushmore of University of Maryland Sports figures.
- 29:05Speaker 2: When Bias Lefty Drizzle, Scott van Pelt at Dominique.
- 29:12Speaker 1: Dawes, how about that?
- 29:14Speaker 3: Uh? Okay, pretty good? Okay, who do you got? That's good? Yes?
- 29:20Speaker 7: I agree with Limbius Number one Yep, I'll go.
- 29:24Speaker 3: I'll go Randy White good one. Yes, I'll go Randy White,
- 29:29Speaker 3: I'll go. Let's go. Uh uh.
- 29:34Speaker 7: It's the Steve Francis a Wan Dixon on the basketball
- 29:37Speaker 7: sid so.
- 29:38Speaker 1: Good's Stevie franchise.
- 29:39Speaker 7: Yeah, yeah, yeah, I will go there.
- 29:43Speaker 3: Man.
- 29:44Speaker 7: It's it's tough because I'll go with man Scott Vanpell.
- 29:48Speaker 3: You know that's.
- 29:49Speaker 1: A good way. It represents the school pretty well.
- 29:53Speaker 3: Yes, man, I can go there. Yeah all right.
- 29:56Speaker 2: So on the Fox Sports app there is not Colin
- 29:58Speaker 2: Cowhard a I Colin Coward.
- 30:00Speaker 1: Who's better at his job than Colin. It's remarkable, It's unbelievable.
- 30:04Speaker 2: Colin's very good at his job. But let's ask Ai
- 30:07Speaker 2: colle it and see who he agrees with.
- 30:10Speaker 8: Maryland's Mount Rushmore starts with Len Bias. He's the myth,
- 30:13Speaker 8: the talent, the what could have been that still hangs
- 30:16Speaker 8: over the whole place. Then I'm putting one Dixon up
- 30:19Speaker 8: there because he's the face of the modern Golden era.
- 30:22Speaker 8: E Jay Henderson because he owned college football awards season,
- 30:26Speaker 8: and Katie O'Donnell because that field hockey resume is basically
