July Independence Day as you were growing

up and throughout the rest of your years?

Well, the Fourth of July,

we always went to the rodeos.

And for the rest of the years,

I think probably the highlight for me

would be the two years I spent in

the service.

That was one of the biggest advances in

my life for that period of time.

When I first went in,

I was just shortly out of high school.

Transportation and communications were

next thing to nil.

The day that they would have called me

if they would have called me up alone,

I would not have known how to read

a bus schedule or anything to get to

where I had to take my physical in

I had never made a long distance phone

call because that was an extreme rarity.

And even at that time,

a lot of us rural people

did not even have electricity.

But six months after I got into the

service,

I figured you could not lose me any

place in the world.

So it was a stretch of time that

I grew up very fast from going in

as is not no kid.

I was a man.

There's been an awful lot of progress

since then and everything,

but I think for a short period of

time,

that was probably the most outstanding for

it's amazing the things that you actually

got to do or not got to do,

but had to do when you were in

the Air Force and you were in Japan,

this country is truly amazing.

And it's people like you, individuals,

veterans like you,

that is one of the reasons we're here

We didn't really have too much memories.

It was just we were as little kids,

two and three and four years old,

why there were no bad guys running around.

We didn't have to have any rattlesnakes in

the country.

So we just roamed the country,

and that was our –

Daily fun.

There was a lot of vacant houses.

We'd go and explore them.

And nothing really outstanding,

I don't think that you would say.

It was just, we just grew up.

And now, when you went off, shipped off,

you went overseas.

If you don't mind,

kind of just give everyone a quick rundown

of kind of what you did in the

Air Force.

after we was overseas?

Correct, yes.

We left San Francisco in a cargo plane.

They was in a hurry to get us
8:42
over there.

And then we went,

we had to land a couple of times
8:49
for fuel once in Midway and once in
8:53
Hawaii.

And then we ended up in Guam.

And that's where we got assigned our
8:59
crew and our plane and kind of got
9:03
oriented to what was ahead of us.

And after a stretch there,
9:10
then we were sent to Saipan,
9:13
which was our base for the rest of
9:17
the war.
9:18
Saipan is about twenty-four miles long and
9:26
about five or six miles wide.
9:29
And a lot of it is, uh, hilly,
9:31
uh, uh, tropical forest.
9:36
And there was some of the Japanese people
9:39
that were natives up there.
9:41
They didn't even know what was going on.
9:44
And when we'd, uh, uh,
9:46
when the air force came in there and
9:49
built their landing fields and planes, uh,
9:53
some of those Japanese,
9:56
they were Japanese.
9:57
came down and snooped around to see what

was going on.

So the first thing when we landed there,

we had to have police watch overnight,
10:18
every night, we'd kind of take turns.

We had about a two foot wide army
10:25
cottage
10:29
well, bed, I guess, whatever you call it,

to lay on.

And we were not armed,
10:35
but we had to sleep very light,
10:37
which was no problem.

And if we saw anything like that,

of course, we had the alert,
10:46
the higher ups.

And at that time,

they had mosquitoes the same as we have

here.

And they sprayed the whole fields,

the whole island, I guess, for mosquitoes,

but they did not get them all.

So we had to lather on pretty heavy

mosquito repellent.

And we went to bed on these little,

eighteen inch wide cottages.

And they were sitting on a platform

two-by-fours on edge with a few boards

across the top.

And underneath the two-by-fours,

there was rats all over here.

Oh, my gosh.

Chirping all night long.

And of course,

as narrow as those things were,

I always hung my hands over the sides

and that put them pretty close to the

ground.

And the rats would come and chew on

my fingernails.

I think what they was looking for was

that mosquito repellent,

probably have a little salt in it or

something.

But the only way I could keep the

rats from chewing my fingernails was cross

them on my chest.

That was about the highlights, I guess,

Now, you were a gunner in the aircraft,

It was one of the most heavily armed

planes at that time.

about an eighteen-inch tunnel is the only

So our gunners, besides the tail gunner,

there's three of us, two blister gunners,

side gunners, and one top gunner.

And all these guns were interconnected

And the B-XXIX was the first

plane of any kind that had any kind

of a computer on it.

We fed that information to the computer

and of course it was kind of slow,

but after it got its information,

it would automatically aim the guns

take care of speed, distance, ballistics,

anything that you could consider.

So we never touched a gun at all.

We had our little side blisters and then

the top gunner, we had a little pedestal.

The left pedestal,

we had a imposed ring of light

that we had to frame any incoming

airplane, but we had to,

as it got closer, of course,

the ring would be bigger.

And we had to,

that was the biggest part of our education

was to learn to frame that incoming plane

very smoothly.

And then of course,

whenever we thought it was right,

why then the right hand had a trigger

on it that we,

fire the guns in but we they were

all interconnected like I said so that if

there was only one plane coming in on
15:26
my side I would ask for all the
15:29
guns and all the gunners would switch all
15:34
their guns to me so I'd have most
15:38
of those blisters would have six fifties

in them and so the twenty four fifties
15:45
that I had aimed at the incoming plane,
15:49
controlled by a computer.

And we always flew formation, three, five,
15:56
or seven.

And all the other gunners were doing the
15:59
same thing,

so that an incoming plane was just like

flying against a lead wall.

They did not have a chance.

The only way they could get any contact

with a B-

would be to have a lot,

at least six or seven fighter planes

coming in from different angles at the

same time so that we would not have

enough guns to cover all of them.

So one of them might sneak in,

which was very seldom.

But I never saw an enemy aircraft while

I was in the Air Corps at all.

And also we had to watch when the

plane was taken off,

we had to see that the flaps were

down properly, that the tires were all up,

no flat tires,

and that the engines were not belching

smoke or anything.

And we always reported that to the

Basically, that was our

our position in life, I guess.

projected a lot of projectiles you know

there's uh kind of like shotgunning the

whole earth right and uh when we were

when we'd go, we'd had,

it was probably a fourteen,
18:48
fifteen hour round trip.

So I always packed a lunch and we

always packed one cheese sandwich with
18:58
heavy cheese in it so that if one

of those projectiles pierced the body of

the plane,

we would take a chunk of cheese and

hold over that

a hole so we wouldn't lose our
19:13
pressurization and that's amazing we never
19:17
had to do it but there was quite
19:20
a few that did have to wow
