Speaker 1: Sonnet won happy ye leaves, when as those lily hands
0:06
Speaker 1: which hold my life in their dead doing, might shall
0:10
Speaker 1: handle you and hold in love's soft bands like captives
0:15
Speaker 1: trembling at the victor's sight, and happy lines on which,
0:20
Speaker 1: with starry light those lamping eyes will deign sometimes to
0:24
Speaker 1: look and read the sorrows of my dying sprite written
0:30
Speaker 1: with tears in heart's close bleeding book, and happy rhymes
0:36
Speaker 1: bath'd in the sacred brook of Helicon. Whence she derive
0:40
Speaker 1: it is when ye behold at angel's blessed look, my
0:44
Speaker 1: soul's long lack'd food, my heav'n's bliss leaves, lines and rhymes,
0:52
Speaker 1: seek her to please alone, whom, if ye please, I
0:58
Speaker 1: care for other none, SunNet too unquiet thought, whom at
1:08
Speaker 1: the first I bread a thenward bale of my love
1:11
Speaker 1: pinted heart and sithens have with sighs and sorrows fed
1:17
Speaker 1: till greater than my womb. Thou walk'st an art, break
1:21
Speaker 1: forth at length out of the inner part, in which
1:24
Speaker 1: thou lurkest like to viper's brood, and seek some succor,
1:29
Speaker 1: both to ease my smart and also to sustain thyself
1:34
Speaker 1: with food. But if in presence of that fairest proud
1:39
Speaker 1: thou chancet to come fall lowly at her feet, and
1:44
Speaker 1: with meek, humbless and afflicted mood, pardon for THEE and
1:49
Speaker 1: grace for me entreat which, if she grant, then live,
1:54
Speaker 1: and my love cherish. If not diy soon, and I
2:02
Speaker 1: with THEE will perish. Sonnet three, Thou sovereign beauty, which
2:12
Speaker 1: I do admire, witness the world, how worthy to be
2:16
Speaker 1: praised the light whereof hath kindled heavenly fire in my
2:21
Speaker 1: frail spirit. By her from baseness raised that being. Now
2:27
Speaker 1: with her huge brightness, dazed base things I can no
2:31
Speaker 1: more endure to view. But looking still on her, I
2:36
Speaker 1: stand amazed at wondrous sight of so celestial hue. So
2:43
Speaker 1: when my tongue would speak her praises due it stop,
2:47
Speaker 1: it is with thoughts astonishment. And when my pen would
2:51
Speaker 1: write her titles true it ravisht is with fancies wonderment.
2:58
Speaker 1: Yet in my heart I then both speak and write
3:02
Speaker 1: the wonder that my wit cannot indite. SunNet four new
3:09
Speaker 1: year forth, looking out of Jane's gate, doth seem to
3:12
Speaker 1: promise hope of new delight and bidding gold adieu. His
3:17
Speaker 1: pacid date bids all old thoughts to die in dumpish sprite,
3:23
Speaker 1: and calling forth out of sad winter's night, fresh love,
3:28
Speaker 1: that long hath slept in cheerless bower, wills him awake,
3:32
Speaker 1: and soon about him dight his wanton wings and darts
3:37
Speaker 1: of deadly power. For lusty spring, now in his timely hour,
3:42
Speaker 1: is ready to come forth him to receive, and warns
3:46
Speaker 1: the earth with divers color'd flower to deck herself and
3:50
Speaker 1: her fair mantle weave. Then, you, fair flower, in whom
3:55
Speaker 1: fresh youth doth reign, prepare yourself you love to entertain.
4:05
Speaker 1: Sonnet five. Rudely, thou wrongest my dear heart's desire in
4:11
Speaker 1: finding fault with her. Too portly pride, the thing which
4:15
Speaker 1: I do most in her admire, is of the world unworthy,
4:19
Speaker 1: most envied, For in those lofty looks is close implied
4:25
Speaker 1: scorn of base things and stain of foul, dishonor threatening
4:31
Speaker 1: rash eyes, which gaze on her so wide that loosely
4:36
Speaker 1: they ne'er dare to look upon her. Such pride is praise,
4:42
Speaker 1: such portliness is honor, that bold and innocence bears in
4:47
Speaker 1: her eyes, and her fair countenance, like a goodly banner,
4:52
Speaker 1: spreads in defiance of all enemies. Was never in this
4:57
Speaker 1: world aught worthy tried without some spark of such self
5:03
Speaker 1: pleasing pride. Son at six need not dismayed that her
5:11
Speaker 1: unmoved mind doth still persist in her rebellious pride and love.
5:17
Speaker 1: Not like to lusts a baser kind the harder one,
5:22
Speaker 1: the firmer, will abide. The dureful oak, whose sap is
5:27
Speaker 1: not yet dried. Is long ere it conceive the kindling fire.
5:32
Speaker 1: But when it once doth burn, it doth divide great heat,
5:37
Speaker 1: and makes his flames to heaven aspire. So hard it
5:42
Speaker 1: is to kindle new desire and gentle breast that shall
5:46
Speaker 1: endure forever. Deep is the wound that dense the parts
5:51
Speaker 1: entire with chaste effects that naught but death can sever.
5:57
Speaker 1: Then think not long in taking little pain to knit
6:01
Speaker 1: the knot that ever shall remain. Sonnet seven, Fair eyes
6:10
Speaker 1: the mirror of my mazed heart. What wondrous virtue is
6:14
Speaker 1: contained in you, the which both life and death forth
6:19
Speaker 1: from you? Dart into the object of your mighty view.
6:24
Speaker 1: For when ye mildly look with lovely hue, then is
6:28
Speaker 1: my soul with life and love inspired. But when ye
6:33
Speaker 1: lower or look on me askew, then do I die
6:37
Speaker 1: as one with lightning fired. But since that life is
6:43
Speaker 1: more than death desired, look ever lovely as becomes you
6:47
Speaker 1: best that your bright beams of my weak eyes admired,
6:52
Speaker 1: may kindle living fire within my breast. Such life should
6:57
Speaker 1: be the honor of your light. Such death the sad
7:02
Speaker 1: and sample of your might Sonnet eight. More than most fair,
7:12
Speaker 1: full of the living fire kindled above unto the maker
7:16
Speaker 1: near no eyes, but joys in which all powers conspire,
7:22
Speaker 1: that to the world naught else be counted. Dear, through
7:28
Speaker 1: your bright beams. Doth not the blinded guest shoot out
7:31
Speaker 1: his darts to base affections wound, But angels come to
7:37
Speaker 1: lead frail minds to rest in chaste desires on heav'nly
7:42
Speaker 1: beauty bound. You frame my thoughts and fashion me within.
7:48
Speaker 1: You stop my tongue and teach my heart to speak.
7:52
Speaker 1: You calm the storm that passion did begin strong through
7:57
Speaker 1: your cause, but by your virtue weak dark is the
8:03
Speaker 1: world where your light shined. Never well is he borne
8:08
Speaker 1: that may behold you ever sunn at nine long, while
8:19
Speaker 1: I sought to what I might compare those powerful eyes
8:23
Speaker 1: which lighten my dark spright. Yet find I nought on
8:28
Speaker 1: earth to which I dare resemble the image of their
8:31
Speaker 1: goodly light. Not to the sun, for they do shine
8:35
Speaker 1: by night, Nor to the moon, for they are changed
8:40
Speaker 1: never nor to the stars, for they have purer sight.
8:44
Speaker 1: Nor to the fire, for they consume not ever, Nor
8:49
Speaker 1: to the lightning, for they still persevere. Nor to the diamond,
8:54
Speaker 1: for they are more tender, Nor into crystal, for naught
8:59
Speaker 1: may themseve, nor unto glass. Such baseness might offend her.
9:07
Speaker 1: Then to the maker self they likest be whose light
9:11
Speaker 1: doth lighten all that here we see son at ten,
9:19
Speaker 1: unrighteous Lord of love? What law is this that me
9:23
Speaker 1: thou makest thus tormented be the while she lordeth in
9:28
Speaker 1: licentious bliss of her free will, scorning both THEE and me.
9:34
Speaker 1: See how the tyranness doth joy to see the huge
9:38
Speaker 1: massacres which her eyes do make, and humbled heart springs
9:43
Speaker 1: captives unto thee, that thou of them mayest mighty vengeance take,
9:50
Speaker 1: But her proud heart, do thou a little shake? And
9:54
Speaker 1: that high look with which she doth control all this
9:57
Speaker 1: world's pride bow to a base her make, and all
10:01
Speaker 1: her faults in my black book enroll that I may
10:07
Speaker 1: laugh at her in equal sort as she does laugh
10:11
Speaker 1: at me, and makes my pain her sport. Son At
10:19
Speaker 1: eleven daily, when I do seek and sue for peace,
10:25
Speaker 1: and hostages do offer for my truth, she cruel warrior
10:30
Speaker 1: doth her self address to battle, and the weary war reneweth.
10:35
Speaker 1: Nor will be moved with reason or with ruth to
10:39
Speaker 1: grant small respite to my restless toil. But greedily her
10:44
Speaker 1: fell intent pursueth of my poor life, to make unpitied spoil.
10:52
Speaker 1: Yet my poor life all sorrows to a soil. I
10:57
Speaker 1: would her yield her wrath to passy, But then she
11:03
Speaker 1: seeks with torment and turmoil to force me live, and
11:08
Speaker 1: will not let me die. All pain hath end, and
11:14
Speaker 1: every war hath peace, But mine no price nor prayer
11:20
Speaker 1: may surcease sun At twelve one day I sought, with
11:29
Speaker 1: her heart thrilling eyes to make a truce and terms
11:33
Speaker 1: to entertain all fearless Then of so false enemies which
11:38
Speaker 1: sought me to entrap in treason's train. So as I
11:43
Speaker 1: then disarmed, did remain a wicked ambush which lay hidden
11:48
Speaker 1: long in the close court of her guileful iron. Thence
11:52
Speaker 1: breaking forth did thick about me throng, too feeble eye
11:58
Speaker 1: to abide the brunts so strong was forced to yield
12:02
Speaker 1: myself into their hands, who me captiving straight with rigorous wrong,
12:09
Speaker 1: have ever since meet captain cruel bands. So lady, now
12:16
Speaker 1: to you, I do complain against your eyes that justice
12:21
Speaker 1: I may gain Sonnet thirteen. In that proud port which
12:29
Speaker 1: her so goodly graceth, whilst her fair face she rears
12:33
Speaker 1: up to the sky and to the ground, her eyelids
12:36
Speaker 1: low imbaseth most goodly temperature, ye may descry mild, humbless,
12:43
Speaker 1: mixed with awful majesty for looking on the earth. Whence
12:48
Speaker 1: she was born, her mind remembereth her mortality. Whatso is
12:54
Speaker 1: fairest shall to earth return, But that same lofty countenance
13:00
Speaker 1: seems to scorn base thing, and think how she to
13:04
Speaker 1: Heaven may climb treading down earth as loathsome and forlorn
13:09
Speaker 1: that hinders heavenly thoughts with drossy slime, Yet lowly still
13:16
Speaker 1: vouchsafe to look on me. Such lowliness shall make you
13:21
Speaker 1: lofty be son at fourteen. Return again my forces late
13:30
Speaker 1: dismayed unto the siege by you abandoned. Quite great shame
13:35
Speaker 1: it is to leave, like one afraid, so fair a
13:39
Speaker 1: peace for one repulse so light gainst. Such strong castles
13:44
Speaker 1: needeth greater might than those small forts which ye were.
13:48
Speaker 1: Won't belay such haughty minds, inured to hardy fight, disdain
13:54
Speaker 1: to yield unto the first essay, Bring therefore all the
13:59
Speaker 1: forces that ye may, and lay incessant battery to her heart, plaints, prayers, vows, ruth, sorrow,
14:08
Speaker 1: and dismay those engines can the proudest love convert, And
14:14
Speaker 1: if those fail, fall down and die before her, So
14:20
Speaker 1: dying live and living, do adore her son. At fifteen,
14:30
Speaker 1: ye tradeful merchants, that, with weary toil, do seek most
14:35
Speaker 1: precious things to make your gain. And both the indias
14:39
Speaker 1: of their treasures spoil what needeth you to seek so
14:43
Speaker 1: far in vain. For lo my love doth in herself
14:47
Speaker 1: contain all this world's riches that may far be found.
14:53
Speaker 1: If sapphires low, her eyes be sapphires plain, If rubies low,
14:59
Speaker 1: her li lips be rubies sound, If pearls her teeth
15:04
Speaker 1: be pearls both pure and round. If ivory, her forehead
15:10
Speaker 1: ivory ween. If gold, her lucks are finest gold on ground.
15:17
Speaker 1: If silver, her fair hands are silver sheen. But that
15:23
Speaker 1: which fairest is but few behold her mind adorned with virtues,
15:30
Speaker 1: Manifold Son at sixteen. One day, as I unwarily did
15:39
Speaker 1: gaze on those fair eyes, my love's immortal light, the wilds,
15:44
Speaker 1: my astonished heart stood in amaze. Through sweet illusion of
15:48
Speaker 1: her looks delight, I might perceive how in her glancing
15:53
Speaker 1: sight legions of loves with little wings did fly, darting
15:58
Speaker 1: their deadly arrow's fire, very bright at every rash beholder.
16:02
Speaker 1: Passing by one of those archers closely, I did spy,
16:07
Speaker 1: aiming his arrow at my very heart, When suddenly, with
16:12
Speaker 1: twinkle of her eye, the damsel broke his misintended dart.
16:18
Speaker 1: Had she not so done, sure I had been slain.
16:22
Speaker 1: Yet as it was, I hardly escaped with pain, Son
16:31
Speaker 1: at seventeen. The glorious portrait of that angel's face made
16:37
Speaker 1: to amaze weak men's confused skill and this world's worthless glory.
16:42
Speaker 1: To embase what pen what pencil can express her fill,
16:49
Speaker 1: For though he colors could devise at will and eke
16:53
Speaker 1: his learned hand at pleasure guide least trembling it his
16:58
Speaker 1: workmanship should spill. Yet many wondrous things there are beside
17:04
Speaker 1: the sweet eye, glances that like arrows glide, the charming
17:09
Speaker 1: smiles that rob sense from the heart, the lovely pleasants,
17:14
Speaker 1: and the lofty pride. Cannot express it be by any art.
17:20
Speaker 1: A greater craftsman's hand therto doth need that can express
17:25
Speaker 1: the life of things. Indeed, sun at eighteen, the rolling
17:33
Speaker 1: wheel that runneth often round the hardest steel in tract
17:38
Speaker 1: of time doth tear, and drizzling drops that often do
17:43
Speaker 1: redound the firmest flint dove in continuance wear, Yet cannot I,
17:50
Speaker 1: with many a dropping tear and long entreaty soften her
17:54
Speaker 1: hard heart, that she will once vouchsafe my plaints to hear,
18:00
Speaker 1: or look with pity on my painful smart But when
18:04
Speaker 1: I plead, she bids me play my part. And when
18:08
Speaker 1: I weep, she says, tears are but water. And when
18:12
Speaker 1: I sigh, she says I know the art. And when
18:17
Speaker 1: I wail, she turns herself to laughter. So do I
18:22
Speaker 1: weep and wail and plead in vain, while she as
18:27
Speaker 1: steel and flint doth still remain Sonnet nineteen, the merry
18:36
Speaker 1: cuckoo messenger of spring, his trumpet shrill hath thrice already
18:41
Speaker 1: sounded that warns all lovers wait upon their king, who
18:46
Speaker 1: now is coming forth with garland crowned with noise, whereof
18:51
Speaker 1: the choir of birds resounded their anthems, sweet devised of
18:56
Speaker 1: Love's praise, that all the woods their echoes back rebounded
19:01
Speaker 1: as if they knew the meaning of their lays. But
19:05
Speaker 1: mongst them all, which did Love's honor raise. No word
19:10
Speaker 1: was heard of her that most it ought. But she
19:14
Speaker 1: his precept proudly disobeys, and doth his idle message set
19:19
Speaker 1: at naught. Therefore, o love, unless she turned to thee
19:24
Speaker 1: here cuckoo end let her a rebel be sun at
19:32
Speaker 1: twenty in vain, I seek and sue to her for grace,
19:38
Speaker 1: and drew my humbled heart before her, poor the wiles
19:42
Speaker 1: her foot. She in my neck doth place and dread
19:45
Speaker 1: my life down in the lowly floor. And yet the lion,
19:51
Speaker 1: that his lord of power and reigneth over every beast
19:55
Speaker 1: and field, in his most pride, disdaineth to devour the
20:00
Speaker 1: silly lamb that to his might doth yield. But she
20:05
Speaker 1: more cruel and more savage wild than either lion or lioness,
20:11
Speaker 1: shames not to be with guiltless blood defiled, but taketh
20:16
Speaker 1: glory in her cruelness, fairer than fairest. Let none ever
20:22
Speaker 1: say that ye were blooded in a yielded prey son
20:29
Speaker 1: At twenty one. Was it the work of nature or
20:33
Speaker 1: of art which tempered so the feature of her face?
20:37
Speaker 1: That pride and meekness mixed by equal part, do both
20:42
Speaker 1: appear to adorn her beauty's grace. For with mild pleasance,
20:47
Speaker 1: which doth pride displace, she to her love doth looker's
20:52
Speaker 1: eyes allure, and with stern countenance back again doth chase
20:57
Speaker 1: their looser looks that stir up lests impure. With such
21:03
Speaker 1: strange terms her eyes, she doth inure that with one
21:07
Speaker 1: look she doth my life dismay, and with another doth
21:12
Speaker 1: it straight recure Her smile me draws her frown, me
21:18
Speaker 1: drives away. Thus does she train and teach me with
21:23
Speaker 1: her looks Such art of eyes I never read in books,
21:29
Speaker 1: Sonnet twenty two. This holy season fit to fast and
21:35
Speaker 1: pray men to devotion ought to be inclin'd. Wherefore I, likewise,
21:42
Speaker 1: on so holy day for my sweet saint, some service
21:47
Speaker 1: fit will find her temple fare is built within my mind,
21:53
Speaker 1: in which her glorious image placed, is on which my
21:57
Speaker 1: thoughts do day and night attend, Like sacred priests that
22:02
Speaker 1: never think amiss. There, I to her, as the author
22:07
Speaker 1: of my bliss, will build an altar to appease her ire,
22:12
Speaker 1: And on the same my heart will sacrifice, burning in flames,
22:16
Speaker 1: a pure and chaste desire, the which vouchsafe O Goddess,
22:22
Speaker 1: to accept amongst thy dearest relics to be kept. Sun
22:31
Speaker 1: At twenty three, Penelope, for her ulysses sake, devised a
22:37
Speaker 1: web her wooers to deceive, in which the work that
22:41
Speaker 1: she all day did make the same at night she
22:45
Speaker 1: did again unreave. Such subtle craft, my damsel, doth conceive
22:52
Speaker 1: the importune suit of my desire to shun for all
22:57
Speaker 1: that I, in many days do weave, in one short
23:01
Speaker 1: hour I find by her undone. So when I think
23:06
Speaker 1: to end that I begun, I must begin and never
23:11
Speaker 1: bring to end. For with one look she spills that
23:16
Speaker 1: long I spun, and with one word my whole year's work,
23:21
Speaker 1: doth rend such labor like the spider's web I find,
23:27
Speaker 1: whose fruitless work is broken with least wind sun At
23:35
Speaker 1: twenty four, When I behold at beauty's wonderments and rare
23:41
Speaker 1: perfection of each goodly part of nature's skill, the only
23:46
Speaker 1: compliment I honor and admire the maker's art. But when
23:52
Speaker 1: I feel the bitter, baleful smart which her fair eyes
23:57
Speaker 1: unwares to work in me, that death out of their
24:01
Speaker 1: shiny beams do dart, I think that I a new Pandora,
24:07
Speaker 1: see whom all the gods in council did agree into
24:11
Speaker 1: the sinful world from heaven to send that she to
24:16
Speaker 1: wicked men a scourge should be for all their false
24:20
Speaker 1: with which they did offend. But since ye are my scourge,
24:27
Speaker 1: I will entreat that for my faults, ye will me
24:33
Speaker 1: gently beat Sonnet twenty five. How long shall this like
24:40
Speaker 1: dying life endure and know no end of her own mystery?
24:46
Speaker 1: But waste and where away in terms unsure TwixT fear
24:50
Speaker 1: and hope, depending doubtfully, Yet better were at once to
24:56
Speaker 1: let me die and show the last ensample of your
24:59
Speaker 1: pride than to torment me thus with cruelty to prove
25:03
Speaker 1: your power, which I too well have tried. But yet
25:10
Speaker 1: if in your harden'd breast he hide a close intent
25:14
Speaker 1: at last to show me grace, then all the woes
25:19
Speaker 1: and wrecks which I abide as means a bliss I
25:23
Speaker 1: gladly will embrace, and wish that more and greater they
25:27
Speaker 1: might be, that greater meed at last may turn to me.
25:36
Speaker 1: Sunn At twenty six. Sweet is the rose, but grows
25:41
Speaker 1: upon a briar. Sweet is the juniper, but sharp his bow.
25:47
Speaker 1: Sweet is the egglanine, but pricketh near. Sweet is the
25:52
Speaker 1: fur bloom, but his branch is rough. Sweet is the cypress,
25:57
Speaker 1: but his rind is tough. Sweet is the nut, but
26:02
Speaker 1: bitter is his pill. Sweet is the broom flower, but
26:07
Speaker 1: yet sour enough. And sweet is moley, but his root
26:13
Speaker 1: is ill. So every sweet with sour is temper'd. Still
26:20
Speaker 1: that maketh it be coveted the more for easy things
26:25
Speaker 1: that may be got at will. Most sorts of men
26:28
Speaker 1: do set but little store. Why then, should I account
26:33
Speaker 1: of little pain, that endless pleasure shall unto me gain?
26:41
Speaker 1: Sonnet twenty seven. Fair proud, Now tell me why should
26:48
Speaker 1: fair be proud? Sith all world's glory is but dross, unclean,
26:54
Speaker 1: and in the shade of death itself shall shroud. However,
26:58
Speaker 1: now thereof ye little ween, that goodly idol, now so
27:04
Speaker 1: gay be seen, shall doff her flesh's borrowed fair attire
27:10
Speaker 1: and be forgot as it had never been that many
27:14
Speaker 1: now much worship and admire. Nay, any then shall after
27:19
Speaker 1: it inquire Any mention shall thereof remain. But what this verse,
27:26
Speaker 1: that never shall expire, shall to you purchase with her
27:31
Speaker 1: thankless pain. There be no longer proud of that shall perish,
27:39
Speaker 1: but that which shall you make immortal cherish Sonnet. Twenty eight.
27:48
Speaker 1: The laurel leaf which you this day do wear gives
27:52
Speaker 1: me great hope of your relenting mind, For since it
27:57
Speaker 1: is the badge which I do bear, ye wearing it
28:00
Speaker 1: do seem to me inclined the power thereof which oft
28:05
Speaker 1: in me I find. Let it likewise, your gentle breast,
28:10
Speaker 1: inspire with sweet infusion, and put you in mind of
28:14
Speaker 1: that proud maid whom now those leaves attire, proud Daphne
28:21
Speaker 1: scorning Phoebus lovely fire on the Thessalian shore from him
28:25
Speaker 1: did fly, for which the gods in their revengeful ire,
28:30
Speaker 1: did her transform into a laurel tree? Then fly no
28:35
Speaker 1: more fair love from Phoebus chase, but in your breast
28:40
Speaker 1: his leaf and love embrace sunn at twenty nine. See
28:50
Speaker 1: how the stubborn damsel does deprave my simple meaning with
28:54
Speaker 1: disdainful scorn. And by the bay which I, unto her gave,
29:00
Speaker 1: accounts myself her captive. Quite forlorn the bay quoth she
29:05
Speaker 1: is of the victors, born, yielded them by the vanquished
29:09
Speaker 1: as their meds, and they therewith do poets heads adorn
29:14
Speaker 1: to sing the glory of their famous deeds, But sith
29:19
Speaker 1: she will the conquest challenge deeds. Let her accept me
29:24
Speaker 1: as her faithful thrall that her great triumph, which my
29:28
Speaker 1: skill exceeds, I may in trump of fame blaze over all.
29:35
Speaker 1: Then would I deck her head with glorious bays and
29:38
Speaker 1: fill the world with her victorious praise? Soun at thirty.
29:49
Speaker 1: My love is like to ice, and I to fire.
29:54
Speaker 1: How comes it then, that this her cold, so great,
29:58
Speaker 1: is not dissolved through my I so hot desire, but
30:02
Speaker 1: harder grows the more I hear entreat Or how comes
30:06
Speaker 1: it that my exceeding heat is not delayed by her
30:10
Speaker 1: heart frozen cold, but that I burn much more in
30:15
Speaker 1: boiling sweat, and feel my flames augmented manifold. What more
30:22
Speaker 1: miraculous thing may be told, that fire, which all things melts,
30:27
Speaker 1: should harden ice, and ice which is congealed with senseless cold,
30:33
Speaker 1: should kindle fire by wonderful device. Such is the power
30:39
Speaker 1: of love in gentle mind, that it can alter all
30:44
Speaker 1: the course of kind Sonnet thirty one. Ah, why hath
30:51
Speaker 1: nature to so hard a heart given so goodly gifts
30:55
Speaker 1: a beauty's grace, whose pride depraves each other better part,
31:00
Speaker 1: and all those precious ornaments deface sith to all other
31:06
Speaker 1: beasts of bloody race, a dreadful countenance she given hath
31:11
Speaker 1: that with their terror all the rest may chase and
31:14
Speaker 1: worn to shun the danger of their wrath. But my
31:19
Speaker 1: proud one doth work the greater scaf through sweet allurement
31:24
Speaker 1: of her lovely hue, that she the better may and
31:27
Speaker 1: bloody bath of such poor thralls her cruel hands imbrew.
31:35
Speaker 1: But did she know how ill these two accord such cruelty?
31:40
Speaker 1: She would have soon abhorred sought at thirty two the
31:48
Speaker 1: painful smith with force of fervent heat, the hardest iron,
31:53
Speaker 1: soond of mollify that with his heavy sledge she can
31:57
Speaker 1: it beat and fashion to wattie it list apply. Yet
32:02
Speaker 1: cannot all these flames in which I fry her heart
32:06
Speaker 1: more hard than iron soft a wit may all the
32:10
Speaker 1: plaints and prayers with which I do beat nannful of
32:14
Speaker 1: her stubborn wit. But still the more she fervent sees
32:20
Speaker 1: my fit, the more she freezeth in her wilful pride,
32:25
Speaker 1: and harder goes the harder she is smit with all
32:29
Speaker 1: the plaints which to her be applied. What then remains
32:34
Speaker 1: but I to ashes burn, and she to stones at
32:38
Speaker 1: length all frozen turn soun at thirty three? Great wrong
32:47
Speaker 1: I do I can it not deny to that most
32:51
Speaker 1: sacred Impress, my dear dread, not finishing her, queen of fairy,
32:57
Speaker 1: that mote enlarge her living praise is dead. But Ludwick,
33:03
Speaker 1: this of grace to be a red Do ye not
33:06
Speaker 1: think the accomplishment of it sufficient work for one man's
33:10
Speaker 1: simple head? All were it as the rest? But rudely
33:14
Speaker 1: writ how then, should I, without another wit think ever
33:20
Speaker 1: to endure so tedious toil? Since that this one is
33:24
Speaker 1: tossed with troublous fit of a proud love, that doth
33:29
Speaker 1: my spirit spoil cease then till she vouchsafed to grant
33:35
Speaker 1: be rest for lend you me another living breast Son
33:41
Speaker 1: at thirty four. Like a ship that through the ocean
33:46
Speaker 1: wide by conduct of some star, doth make her way,
33:50
Speaker 1: when as a storm hath dimmed her trusty guide out
33:54
Speaker 1: of her course, doth wander far astray. So I, whose
34:00
Speaker 1: star that won't with her bright ray me to direct
34:04
Speaker 1: with clouds, is overcast, to wander now in darkness and
34:09
Speaker 1: dismay through hidden perils round about me plast Yet hope
34:16
Speaker 1: I well that when this storm is past, my hailissay,
34:21
Speaker 1: the load star of my life will shine again and
34:24
Speaker 1: look on me at last with lovely light to clear
34:29
Speaker 1: my cloudy grief. Till then I wander careful, comfortless, in
34:37
Speaker 1: secret sorrow and sad pensiveness. Sun at thirty five, My
34:47
Speaker 1: hungry eyes, through greedy coveties, still to behold the object
34:53
Speaker 1: of their pain with no contentment, can themselves suffice? But
34:59
Speaker 1: having pine, and having not complain for lacking it, they
35:05
Speaker 1: cannot life sustain, and having it they gaze on it
35:09
Speaker 1: the more in their amazement, like Narcissus Vain, whose eyes
35:15
Speaker 1: him starved so plenty, makes me poor. Yet are mine
35:23
Speaker 1: eyes so filled with the store of that fair sight
35:26
Speaker 1: that nothing else they brook but loathe the things which
35:30
Speaker 1: they did like before, and can no more endure on
35:34
Speaker 1: them to look All this world's glory seemeth vain to me,
35:41
Speaker 1: and all their shows but shadows saving she son at
35:51
Speaker 1: thirty six. Tell me when shall these weary woes have end?
35:57
Speaker 1: Or shall their ruthless torment never cease? But all my
36:02
Speaker 1: days in pining, languor spend without hope of assuagement or release.
36:09
Speaker 1: Is there no means for me to purchase peace or
36:13
Speaker 1: make agreement with her thrilling eyes, but that their cruelty
36:18
Speaker 1: doth still increase and daily more augment my miseries. But
36:24
Speaker 1: when ye have showed all extremities, then think how little
36:29
Speaker 1: glory ye have gained by slaying him, whose life, though
36:33
Speaker 1: ye despise, must have your life in honor long maintained.
36:39
Speaker 1: But by his death, which some perhaps will moan, ye
36:44
Speaker 1: shall condemn it be of many a one sonnet thirty seven.
36:51
Speaker 1: What guile is this that those her gold entresses, she
36:56
Speaker 1: doth attire under a net of gold, and with sly skill,
37:01
Speaker 1: so cunningly them dresses that which is gold or hair
37:06
Speaker 1: may scarce be told? Is it that men's frail eyes
37:11
Speaker 1: which gaze too bold? She may entangle in that golden snare,
37:16
Speaker 1: and being caught, may craftily enfold their weaker hearts, which
37:21
Speaker 1: are not well aware. Take heed Therefore, mine eyes, how
37:27
Speaker 1: ye do stare henceforth too rashly on that guileful net,
37:32
Speaker 1: in which, if ever ye entrapid are out of her bands, ye,
37:37
Speaker 1: by no means shall get fondness it were for any
37:42
Speaker 1: being free to covet fetters, though they golden bee Son
37:51
Speaker 1: at thirty eight Orion, when through Tempest's cruel rack he
37:57
Speaker 1: foth was thrown into the greedy sea. Ease through the
38:01
Speaker 1: sweet music which his harp did make allured a dolphin
38:06
Speaker 1: him from death to ease. But my rude music, which
38:10
Speaker 1: was wont to please some dainty ears, cannot with any
38:15
Speaker 1: skill the dreadful Tempest of her wrath appease nor move
38:20
Speaker 1: the dolphin from her stubborn will. But in her pride
38:25
Speaker 1: she doth persever still, all careless, how my life for
38:30
Speaker 1: her decays, Yet with one word she can it save
38:36
Speaker 1: or spill, to spill were pity, but to save or praise,
38:43
Speaker 1: choose rather to be praised for doing good than to
38:47
Speaker 1: be blamed for spilling guiltless blood. Son at thirty nine,
38:57
Speaker 1: Sweet smile, the daughter of the Queen of Love, expressing
39:01
Speaker 1: all thy mother's powerful art with which she wants to
39:05
Speaker 1: temper angry jove when all the gods he threats with
39:09
Speaker 1: thundering dart. Sweet is thy virtue as thyself sweet art.
39:17
Speaker 1: For when on me thou shinest s late in sadness,
39:20
Speaker 1: a melting pleasance ran through every part, and me revived
39:25
Speaker 1: with heart rubbing gladness, whilst wrapped with joy resembling heavenly madness,
39:31
Speaker 1: My soul was ravished quite as in a trance, and
39:35
Speaker 1: feeling thence no more her sorrow's sadness, fed on the
39:40
Speaker 1: fullness of that cheerful glance, more sweet than nectar or
39:46
Speaker 1: ambrosial meat, seem'd every bit, which thenceforth I did eat.
39:53
Speaker 1: Sonnet forty mark when she smiles with amiable cheer, and
39:59
Speaker 1: tell me where to can ye liken it? When on
40:03
Speaker 1: each eyelid sweetly to appear an hundred graces, as in
40:07
Speaker 1: shade to sit likest. It seemeth in my simple wit
40:13
Speaker 1: unto the fair sunshine in summer's day, that when a
40:18
Speaker 1: dreadful storm away is flit through the broad world, doth
40:22
Speaker 1: spread his goodly ray that sight whereof each bird that
40:27
Speaker 1: sits on spray, and every beast that to his den
40:31
Speaker 1: was fled, comes forth afresh out of their late dismay,
40:36
Speaker 1: and to the light lift up their drooping head. So
40:40
Speaker 1: my storm beaten heart likewise is cheer'd with that sunshine
40:45
Speaker 1: when cloudy looks are clear'd sun at forty one? Is
40:54
Speaker 1: it her nature or is it her will to be
40:59
Speaker 1: so cruel to an humbled foe. If nature, then she
41:04
Speaker 1: may it mend with skill. If will, then she at
41:09
Speaker 1: will may will forego. But if her nature and her
41:14
Speaker 1: will be so that she will plague the man that
41:18
Speaker 1: loves her most, and take delight to increase a wretch's woe,
41:23
Speaker 1: then all her nature's goodly gifts are lost, and that
41:28
Speaker 1: same glorious beauty's idle boast is but a bait such
41:33
Speaker 1: wretches to beguile as being long in her love's tempest tost,
41:39
Speaker 1: she means at last to make her piteous spoil of
41:45
Speaker 1: fairest fair Let never it be nam'd that so fair
41:50
Speaker 1: beauty was so foully shamed son at forty two. The
42:00
Speaker 1: love which me so cruelly tormenteth so pleasing, is in
42:06
Speaker 1: my extremest pain, that all the more my sorrow it
42:11
Speaker 1: augmenteth the more I love and do embrace my bain
42:17
Speaker 1: neere do I wish for wishing were but vain to
42:21
Speaker 1: be a quit from my continual smart But joy her
42:25
Speaker 1: thrall for ever to remain and yield for pledge my
42:30
Speaker 1: poor captiv'd heart, the which that it from her may
42:34
Speaker 1: never start. Let her, if please her bind with adamant chain,
42:40
Speaker 1: and from all wandering loves which most pervert his safe assurance.
42:46
Speaker 1: Strongly it restrain, only let her abstain from cruelty, and
42:54
Speaker 1: do me not before my time to die on at
43:00
Speaker 1: forty three, Shall I then silence be? Or shall I speak?
43:07
Speaker 1: And if I speak her wrath reknew I shall And
43:11
Speaker 1: if I silent be, my heart will break or choke
43:14
Speaker 1: it be with overflowing gall What tyranny is this? Both
43:20
Speaker 1: my heart to thrall, and eke my tongue with proud
43:24
Speaker 1: restraint to tie that neither I may speak nor think
43:28
Speaker 1: at all, but like a stupid stalk in silence die.
43:35
Speaker 1: Yet I my heart, with silence, secretly will teach to speak,
43:41
Speaker 1: and my just cause to plead, and eke mine eyes
43:45
Speaker 1: with meek humility, love learned letters to her eyes to read,
43:51
Speaker 1: which her deep wit, that true heart's thought can spell,
43:57
Speaker 1: will soon conceive and learn to construe well Son at
44:06
Speaker 1: forty four. When those renowned noble peers of Greece, through
44:12
Speaker 1: stubborn pride amongst themselves did jar forgetful of the famous
44:18
Speaker 1: golden fleece, than Orpheus with his harp, their strife did bar.
44:24
Speaker 1: But this continual cruel civil war, the which myself against
44:30
Speaker 1: myself do make, whilst my weak powers of passions worried
44:36
Speaker 1: are No skill can stent, nor reason can a slake.
44:41
Speaker 1: But when in hand my tuneless harp I take, then
44:45
Speaker 1: do I more augment my foes, despite and grief, renew
44:49
Speaker 1: and passions, do awake to battle fresh against myself, to
44:54
Speaker 1: fight mongst whom. The more I seek to settle peace,
45:00
Speaker 1: the more I find their malice to increase sonnet forty five.
45:09
Speaker 1: Leave lady in your glass of crystal, clean your goodly
45:14
Speaker 1: self forevermore to view, and in myself, my inward self,
45:20
Speaker 1: I mean most lively like. Behold your semblance true within
45:26
Speaker 1: my heart, though hardly it can show things so divine
45:31
Speaker 1: to view of earthly eye, the fair idea of your
45:35
Speaker 1: celestial hue, and every part remains immortally. And were it
45:42
Speaker 1: not that through your cruelty was sorrow dimmed and deformed,
45:47
Speaker 1: it were the goodly image of your visnal me clearer
45:52
Speaker 1: than crystal would therein appear. But if yourself in me,
45:57
Speaker 1: ye plain will see remove the cause by which your
46:02
Speaker 1: fair beams Darken'd be son at forty six, when my
46:10
Speaker 1: abodes prefixed time is spent, my cruel fair straight bids
46:15
Speaker 1: me wind my way. But then from heav'n most hideous
46:19
Speaker 1: storms are sent, as willing me against her will to
46:23
Speaker 1: stay whom then shall I er heav'n o'er her obey.
46:31
Speaker 1: The heavens know best what is the best for me.
46:34
Speaker 1: But as ye will, whose will my life doth sway
46:39
Speaker 1: my lower heav'n, so it perforce must be. But ye
46:45
Speaker 1: high heav'ns, that all this sorrow see seth. All your
46:49
Speaker 1: tempests cannot hold me back assuage your storms, or else
46:54
Speaker 1: both you and she will both together me too sorely
46:58
Speaker 1: rack enough it is for one man to sustain the
47:03
Speaker 1: storms which she alone on mead doth rain Son at
47:11
Speaker 1: forty seven. Trust not the treason of those smiling looks,
47:16
Speaker 1: until ye have their guileful trains well tried. For they
47:21
Speaker 1: are like but unto golden hooks that from the foolish
47:25
Speaker 1: fish their bates do hide. So she, with flattering smiles,
47:31
Speaker 1: weak hearts doth guide unto her love and tempt to
47:35
Speaker 1: their decay, whom, being caught, she kills with cruel pride,
47:41
Speaker 1: and feeds at pleasure on the wretched prey. Yet even
47:46
Speaker 1: whilst her bloody hands them slay, her eyes look lovely,
47:51
Speaker 1: and upon them smile, that they take pleasure in her
47:55
Speaker 1: cruel play, and dying do themselves a pain. Beguile well,
48:01
Speaker 1: o mighty ch harm, which makes men love their bane
48:06
Speaker 1: and think they die with pleasure, live with pain, Son
48:13
Speaker 1: at forty eight. Innocent paper, whom too cruel hand did
48:20
Speaker 1: make the matter to avenge her ire, and ere she
48:24
Speaker 1: could thy cause well understand, did sacrifice unto the greedy fire,
48:30
Speaker 1: Well worthy thou to have found better higher than so
48:34
Speaker 1: bad end for heretics ordain'd, yet heresy nor treason, didst
48:40
Speaker 1: conspire but plead thy master's cause unjustly pain'd whom she
48:47
Speaker 1: all careless of his grief, constrain'd to utter forth the
48:51
Speaker 1: anguish of his heart, and would not hear when he
48:55
Speaker 1: to her complain'd the piteous passion of his dying. Smart
49:00
Speaker 1: yet live forever though against her will, and speak her
49:05
Speaker 1: good though she requite it ill Sonnet forty nine, Fair cruel,
49:15
Speaker 1: Why are you so fierce and cruel? Is it because
49:19
Speaker 1: your eyes have power to kill? Then know that mercy
49:24
Speaker 1: is the mightiest jewel and greater glory. Think to save
49:29
Speaker 1: than spill. But if it be your pleasure and proud
49:34
Speaker 1: will to show the power of your imperious eyes, then
49:38
Speaker 1: not on him that never thought you ill, But bend
49:42
Speaker 1: your force against your enemies, Let them feel the utmost
49:47
Speaker 1: of your cruelties, and kill with looks as coquetriss do.
49:54
Speaker 1: But him that at your footstool humbled lies with merciful regard.
50:00
Speaker 1: Give mercy to such mercy shall you make admir'd to
50:05
Speaker 1: be so? Shall you live by giving life to me?
50:14
Speaker 1: Snet fifty Long languishing in double malady of my heart's
50:20
Speaker 1: wound and of my body's grief, there came to me
50:24
Speaker 1: a leech that would apply fit medicines for my body's
50:29
Speaker 1: best relief. Vain man quoth I that hast but little
50:34
Speaker 1: prief in deep discovery of the mind's disease, is not
50:40
Speaker 1: the heart of all the body chief and rules the
50:44
Speaker 1: members as itself doth please. Then with some cordials, seek
50:49
Speaker 1: first to appease the inward languor of my wounded heart,
50:54
Speaker 1: and then my body shall have shortly ease. But such
50:59
Speaker 1: sweet cordials pass physician's art. Then my life's leech, Do
51:07
Speaker 1: you your skill reveal, and with one salve both heart
51:12
Speaker 1: and body heal? Sonnet fifty one. Do I not see
51:22
Speaker 1: that fairest images of hardest marble are of purpose made
51:28
Speaker 1: for that they should endure through many ages ney let
51:32
Speaker 1: their famous monuments to fade? Why then do I untrain'd
51:38
Speaker 1: in lover's trade her hardness blame which I should more
51:43
Speaker 1: commend sith never aught was excellent essay'd which was not
51:49
Speaker 1: hard to achieve and bring to end? Nay aught so hard.
51:54
Speaker 1: But he that would attend must soften it, and to
51:58
Speaker 1: his will allure. So do I hope her stubborn heart
52:03
Speaker 1: to bend, and that it then more steadfast, will endure.
52:09
Speaker 1: Only my pains will be the more to get her,
52:12
Speaker 1: But having her, my joy will be the greater SUNet
52:18
Speaker 1: fifty two. So oft as homeward I from her depart,
52:25
Speaker 1: I go like one that, having lost the field, is prisoner,
52:29
Speaker 1: led away with heavy heart, despoil'd of warlike arms and
52:34
Speaker 1: no in shield. So do I, now myself a prisoner,
52:38
Speaker 1: yield to sorrow and to solitary pain from presence of
52:44
Speaker 1: my dearest dear exil'd long while alone in languor to
52:50
Speaker 1: remain there, let no thought of joy or pleasure vain
52:55
Speaker 1: dare to approach. That may my solace breed but sat
53:00
Speaker 1: and dumps and dreary sad disdain of all the world's gladness.
53:06
Speaker 1: More my torment feed. So I her absence will my
53:12
Speaker 1: penance make that of her presence I my need may
53:17
Speaker 1: take son at fifty three. The panther, knowing that his
53:26
Speaker 1: spotted hide doth please all beasts, but that his looks them,
53:30
Speaker 1: pray within a bush his dreadful head of hide, to
53:35
Speaker 1: let them gaze whilst he on them may pray right,
53:41
Speaker 1: so my cruel fair with me of play, For with
53:45
Speaker 1: the goodly semblance of her hue, she doth allure me
53:49
Speaker 1: to mine own decay. And then no mercy will unto
53:53
Speaker 1: me show great shame. It is things so divine in view,
53:59
Speaker 1: made for to be the world's most ornament, to make
54:02
Speaker 1: the bait her gazers, to imbrew good shames, to be
54:07
Speaker 1: so ill an instrument, but mercied of with beauty best
54:13
Speaker 1: degree as in their maker. Ye them best may see
54:20
Speaker 1: son at fifty four of this world's theater in which
54:25
Speaker 1: we stay. My love like the spectator idly sits, beholding
54:31
Speaker 1: me that all the pageants play, disguising diversely by troubled wits.
54:39
Speaker 1: Sometimes I joy when glad occasion fits, and a mask
54:42
Speaker 1: in mirth like to accommody. Soon after, when my joy
54:48
Speaker 1: to sorrow flits, I wail and make my woes a tragedy.
54:54
Speaker 1: Yet she beholding me with constant eye delights, not in
55:00
Speaker 1: my mirth nor ruse my smart But when I laugh,
55:03
Speaker 1: she mocks, and when I cry she laughs and hardens
55:07
Speaker 1: ever more her heart. What then can move her? If
55:13
Speaker 1: nor mirth nor mowan she is no woman but a
55:18
Speaker 1: senseless stone sunn At fifty five. So oft as I
55:25
Speaker 1: her beauty to behold, and therewith do her cruelty, compare
55:31
Speaker 1: I marvel of what substance was the mold the which
55:35
Speaker 1: her maid at once so cruel fair not earth for
55:40
Speaker 1: her high thoughts more heavenly are not water. For her
55:45
Speaker 1: love doth burn like fire, not air, for she is
55:50
Speaker 1: not so light or rare, not fire, for she doth
55:55
Speaker 1: freeze with faint desire. Then needs another. All inquire whereof
56:01
Speaker 1: she might be made, that is the sky. For to
56:07
Speaker 1: the heaven her haughty looks aspire, and eke her mind
56:11
Speaker 1: is pure, immortal high. Then seth to heaven, Ye, likened,
56:17
Speaker 1: are the best belike in mercy, as in all the
56:21
Speaker 1: rest Sonnet fifty six. Fair, ye be sure, but cruel
56:32
Speaker 1: and unkind, as is a tiger that, with greediness hunts
56:35
Speaker 1: after blood. When ye by chance to find a feeble beast,
56:40
Speaker 1: the fell ye him oppress. Fair be ye sure, but
56:46
Speaker 1: proud and pitiless, as is a storm that all things
56:50
Speaker 1: doth prostrate. Finding a tree alone, all comfortless meets on
56:56
Speaker 1: it strongly it to ruinate. Fair be sure, but hard
57:02
Speaker 1: and obstinate, as is a rock amidst the raging floods
57:07
Speaker 1: against which a ship of succor desolate doth suffer, wreck
57:12
Speaker 1: both of herself and goods. That ship, that tree, and
57:19
Speaker 1: that same beast am I whom me do wreck to
57:25
Speaker 1: ruin and destroy Sonnet fifty seven, Sweet warrior, when shall
57:36
Speaker 1: I have peace with you? High time? It is this
57:40
Speaker 1: war now ended, were which I no longer can endure
57:45
Speaker 1: to sue, nay your incessant battery more to bear, So
57:50
Speaker 1: weak my powers, so sore my wounds appear. That wonder
57:55
Speaker 1: is how I should live a jot, seeing my heart
57:59
Speaker 1: through long everywhere with thousand arrows which your eyes have shot.
58:06
Speaker 1: Yet shoot ye sharply still, and spare me not but
58:11
Speaker 1: glory think to make these cruel stores, ye cruel one?
58:16
Speaker 1: What glory can be got in slaying him that would
58:21
Speaker 1: live gladly? Yours? Make peace therefore, and grant me timely
58:27
Speaker 1: grace that all my wounds will heal in little space
58:33
Speaker 1: Sonnet fifty eight. By her that is most assured to
58:37
Speaker 1: herself weak is the assurance that weak flesh reposeth in
58:44
Speaker 1: her own power and scorneth. Others aid that soonest falls
58:49
Speaker 1: when as she most supposeth herself assured, and is of
58:53
Speaker 1: nought afraid, all flesh is frail, and all her strength
58:59
Speaker 1: unstained like a vain bubble blown up with air, devouring
59:05
Speaker 1: time and changeful chance. Have pray'd her glorious pride, that
59:09
Speaker 1: none may it repair, ne none so rich or wise,
59:14
Speaker 1: so strong, or fair, but faileth crusting on his own assurance.
59:20
Speaker 1: And he that standeth on the highest stare falls lowest,
59:25
Speaker 1: For on earth naught hath endurance. Why then, do ye proud, fair,
59:33
Speaker 1: misdeemed so far that to yourself ye most assured, are
59:42
Speaker 1: sound at fifty nine thrice happy. She that is so
59:46
Speaker 1: well assured unto herself, and settled so in heart, that
59:51
Speaker 1: neither will for better be allured, ne fear'd with worse
59:56
Speaker 1: to any chance to start. But like a steady ship,
1:00:00
Speaker 1: doth strongly part the raging waves and keeps her course aright,
1:00:05
Speaker 1: ne aught, for tempest doth from it depart, ne aught
1:00:09
Speaker 1: for fairer weather's false delight. Such self assurance need not
1:00:15
Speaker 1: fear the spite of grudging foes, ne favor seek of friends,
1:00:20
Speaker 1: But in the stay of her own steadfast might neither
1:00:24
Speaker 1: to one herself nor other bends most happy, she that
1:00:31
Speaker 1: most assur'd doth rest, but he most happy who such
1:00:37
Speaker 1: one loves best. Sun at sixty They that, in course
1:00:46
Speaker 1: of heavenly spheres are skill'd to every planet point his
1:00:50
Speaker 1: sundry year in which her circle's voyage is fulfill'd, as
1:00:55
Speaker 1: Mars in threescore years doth run his sphere. So since
1:01:01
Speaker 1: the winged god his planet clear began in me to move,
1:01:06
Speaker 1: one year is spent the which doth longer unto me
1:01:10
Speaker 1: appear than all those forty which my life outwent. Then,
1:01:15
Speaker 1: by that count which lover's books invent, the sphere of Cupid,
1:01:20
Speaker 1: forty years contains which I have wasted in long languishment
1:01:27
Speaker 1: that seem'd the longer for my greater pains. But let
1:01:32
Speaker 1: me Love's fair planet shorter ways this year, ensuing or
1:01:38
Speaker 1: else short my days, Sonnet sixty one. The glorious image
1:01:47
Speaker 1: of the Maker's beauty, my sovereign Saint, the idol of
1:01:51
Speaker 1: my thought. Dare not henceforth above the bounds of duty
1:01:56
Speaker 1: to accuse a pride or rashly blame for aught, for
1:02:02
Speaker 1: being as she is divinely wrought and of the brood
1:02:06
Speaker 1: of angels, heavenly born and with the crew of blessed
1:02:10
Speaker 1: saints upbrought, each of which did her with their gifts,
1:02:15
Speaker 1: adorn the bud of joy, the blossom of the morn,
1:02:18
Speaker 1: the beam of light, whom mortal eyes admire. What reason
1:02:24
Speaker 1: is it, then, but she should scorn base things that
1:02:28
Speaker 1: to her love too bold aspire. Such heavenly forms ought
1:02:34
Speaker 1: rather worship'd be than dare be loved by men of
1:02:39
Speaker 1: mean degree. Some at sixty two, the weary year, his
1:02:48
Speaker 1: race now having run, the new begins his compassed course
1:02:53
Speaker 1: anew with show of mourning mild he hath begun, betokening
1:02:58
Speaker 1: peace and plenty to ensue. So let us, which this
1:03:04
Speaker 1: change of weather view change eke our minds and former lives,
1:03:09
Speaker 1: amend the old years sends for past. Let us eschew
1:03:15
Speaker 1: and fly the faults with which we did offend. Then
1:03:20
Speaker 1: shall the new year's joy forth freshly send into the
1:03:24
Speaker 1: glooming world his gladsome ray. And all these storms which
1:03:30
Speaker 1: now his beauty blend, shall turn to calms and timely
1:03:35
Speaker 1: clear away. So likewise, love, cheer you your heavy sprite,
1:03:42
Speaker 1: and change old years annoy to new delight. Sun At
1:03:51
Speaker 1: sixty three, after long storms and tempest's sad essay, which
1:03:58
Speaker 1: hardly I endure it. Heretofore in dread of death and
1:04:02
Speaker 1: dangerous dismay with which my silly bark was tossed sore,
1:04:08
Speaker 1: I do at length descry the happy shore in which
1:04:11
Speaker 1: I hope ere long for to arrive. Fair soil, it
1:04:16
Speaker 1: seems from far and fraught with store of all that
1:04:19
Speaker 1: dear and dainty is alive. Most happy he that can
1:04:25
Speaker 1: at last achieve the joyous safety of so sweet a rest,
1:04:30
Speaker 1: whose least delight sufficeth to deprive remembrance of all pains
1:04:36
Speaker 1: which him oppress'd. All pains are nothing in respect of this,
1:04:42
Speaker 1: all sorrows short that gain eternal bliss Sonnet. Sixty four.
1:04:52
Speaker 1: Coming to kiss her lips such grace I found meseem'd
1:04:56
Speaker 1: I smell the garden of sweet flowers that Dainty odors
1:05:01
Speaker 1: from them threw around for damsels fit to deck their
1:05:05
Speaker 1: lover's bowers. Her lips did smell like unto gilly flowers,
1:05:11
Speaker 1: her ruddy cheeks like unto roses, red, her snowy brows
1:05:16
Speaker 1: like budded bellamoor's, her lovely eyes like pinks, but newly
1:05:21
Speaker 1: spread her goodly bosom like a strawberry bed her neck
1:05:27
Speaker 1: like to a bunch of columbines, her breast like lilies,
1:05:32
Speaker 1: ere their leaves be shed, her nipples like young blossom'd jasmins.
1:05:40
Speaker 1: Such fragrant flowers do give most odorous smell, But her
1:05:45
Speaker 1: sweet odor did them all excel sonnet. Sixty five. The
1:05:55
Speaker 1: doubt which you misdeem fair love is vain that fondly
1:05:59
Speaker 1: feared to lose your liberty. When losing one two liberties
1:06:04
Speaker 1: you gain and make him bond. That bondage erst did fly.
1:06:11
Speaker 1: Sweet be the band's the which true love doth tie,
1:06:15
Speaker 1: without constraint or dread of any ill. The gentle bird
1:06:20
Speaker 1: feels no captivity within her cage, but sings and feeds
1:06:24
Speaker 1: her fill. Their pride dare not approach nor discord spill
1:06:30
Speaker 1: the league betwixt them, that loyal love hath bound, but
1:06:36
Speaker 1: simple truth and mutual good will seeks with sweet peace
1:06:41
Speaker 1: to save each other's wound. Their faith doth fearless dwell
1:06:47
Speaker 1: in brazen tower, and spotless pleasure bills her sacred bower sonnet.
1:06:57
Speaker 1: Sixty six. To all those happy blessings which ye have
1:07:03
Speaker 1: with plenteous hand by Heaven upon you throne this one
1:07:07
Speaker 1: disparagement they to you gave that ye your love lent
1:07:13
Speaker 1: to so mean a one, yet whose high worth surpassing paragon,
1:07:19
Speaker 1: could not on earth have found one fit for mate Na,
1:07:23
Speaker 1: but in heaven matchable to none. Why did ye stoop
1:07:28
Speaker 1: unto so lowly state? But ye thereby much greater glory
1:07:34
Speaker 1: gate than had ye sorted with the Prince's peer. For
1:07:39
Speaker 1: now your light doth more itself dilate, and in my
1:07:43
Speaker 1: darkness greater doth appeer. Yet since your light hath once
1:07:49
Speaker 1: illumined me with my reflex yours shall increase it be
1:07:57
Speaker 1: Sonnet sixty seven. Like as a huntsman, after weary chase,
1:08:03
Speaker 1: seeing the game from him, escaped away, sits down to
1:08:07
Speaker 1: rest him in some shady place, with panting hounds beguiled
1:08:12
Speaker 1: of their prey. So, after long pursuit and vain essay,
1:08:18
Speaker 1: when I all weary, had the chase forsook, the gentle
1:08:23
Speaker 1: dear return'd the self same way, thinking to quench her thirst.
1:08:28
Speaker 1: At the next brook, there she beholding me with milder look,
1:08:33
Speaker 1: sought not to fly, but fearless still did bide till
1:08:38
Speaker 1: I in hand her, Yet half trembling took and with
1:08:42
Speaker 1: her own good will, her firmly tide. Strange thing meseem'd
1:08:49
Speaker 1: to see a beast so wild, so goodly won with
1:08:54
Speaker 1: her own will beguiled, Son at sixty eight, Most Glorious
1:09:03
Speaker 1: Lord of Life, that on this day didst make thy
1:09:07
Speaker 1: triumph over death and sin, and having harrowed hell, didst
1:09:12
Speaker 1: bring away captivity. Thence captive us to wen this joyous day,
1:09:19
Speaker 1: Dear Lord, with joy began and grant that we for
1:09:24
Speaker 1: whom thou didst die, being with thy dear blood, clean
1:09:29
Speaker 1: washed from sin, may live forever in felicity, And that
1:09:35
Speaker 1: thy love, we weighing worthily, may likewise love thee for
1:09:40
Speaker 1: the same again, and for thy sake, that all, like
1:09:45
Speaker 1: dear didst buy with love may one another entertain. So
1:09:52
Speaker 1: let us love dear love like as we ought. Love
1:09:57
Speaker 1: is the lesson which the Lord us taught Son at
1:10:04
Speaker 1: sixty nine. The famous warriors of the antique world used
1:10:10
Speaker 1: trophies to erect and stately wise in which they would
1:10:14
Speaker 1: the records have enrolled of their great deeds and valorous emprise.
1:10:21
Speaker 1: What trophy, then, shall I most fit devise in which
1:10:25
Speaker 1: I may record the memory of my love's conquest peerless
1:10:30
Speaker 1: beauty's prize, adorned with honor, love and chastity. Even this
1:10:37
Speaker 1: verse vowed to eternity, shall be thereof immortal monument. And
1:10:43
Speaker 1: tell her praise to all posterity that may admire such
1:10:48
Speaker 1: world's rare wonderment, the happy purchase of my glorious spoil,
1:10:54
Speaker 1: gotten at last with labor and long toil, Sonnet seventy
1:11:03
Speaker 1: fresh Spring, the herald of Love's mighty King, in whose
1:11:08
Speaker 1: coat armor richly are display'd all sorts of flowers, the
1:11:13
Speaker 1: which on earth do spring in goodly colors, gloriously array'd.
1:11:18
Speaker 1: Go to my love, where she is careless laid, yet
1:11:23
Speaker 1: in her winter's bower, not well awake. Tell her the
1:11:27
Speaker 1: joyous time will not be stay'd unless she do him
1:11:31
Speaker 1: by the forelock. Take bid her therefore herself soon ready,
1:11:36
Speaker 1: make to wait on Love amongst his lovely crew, where
1:11:41
Speaker 1: every one that misseth then her make shall be by him,
1:11:46
Speaker 1: immersed with penance. Do make haste, therefore, sweet Love, whilst
1:11:52
Speaker 1: it is prime, for none can call again the pacid time,
1:12:02
Speaker 1: Son at seventy one. I joy to see how in
1:12:06
Speaker 1: your drawin work yourself unto the bee, ye do compare,
1:12:12
Speaker 1: and me unto the spider, that of the lurk in
1:12:15
Speaker 1: close await to catch her unaware. Right, so yourself were
1:12:20
Speaker 1: caught in cunning snare of a dear foe, and thrallid
1:12:25
Speaker 1: to his love, in whose straight mands ye now captiv'd
1:12:29
Speaker 1: are so firmly that ye never may remove. But as
1:12:35
Speaker 1: your work is woven all above with woodbine, flowers, and
1:12:39
Speaker 1: fragrant eglantine, so sweet your prison, you, in time shall
1:12:44
Speaker 1: prove with many dear delights, be deck'd fine, and all
1:12:51
Speaker 1: thence warth eternal peace shall see between the spider and
1:12:57
Speaker 1: the gentle bee Sonnet seventy two oft. When my spirit
1:13:07
Speaker 1: doth spread her bolder wings and mind to mount up
1:13:11
Speaker 1: to the purest sky, it down is weighed with thought
1:13:15
Speaker 1: of earthly things, and clogg'd with burden of mortality. Where
1:13:22
Speaker 1: when that sovereign beauty it doth spy, resembling Heaven's glory
1:13:26
Speaker 1: in her light, drawn with sweet pleasures, mate it back
1:13:31
Speaker 1: doth fly, and unto Heaven forgets her former flight. There,
1:13:37
Speaker 1: my frail fancy, fed with full delight, doth bathe in
1:13:41
Speaker 1: bliss and mantleth most at ease. Ne'er thinks of other heaven.
1:13:47
Speaker 1: But how it might her heart's desire with most contentment.
1:13:52
Speaker 1: Please heart need not with none other happiness, but here
1:13:58
Speaker 1: on earth to have such heaven's bliss son At seventy three.
1:14:07
Speaker 1: Being myself captived here in care my heart, whom none
1:14:12
Speaker 1: with servile bands can tie, but the fair tresses of
1:14:16
Speaker 1: your golden hair, breaking his prison forth to you, dove
1:14:20
Speaker 1: fly like as a bird that in one's hand doth
1:14:24
Speaker 1: spy desired food to it, doth make his flight. Even so,
1:14:30
Speaker 1: my heart, that won't on your fair eye to feed
1:14:33
Speaker 1: his fill, flies back unto your sight. Do you him
1:14:39
Speaker 1: take and in your bosom, bright gently in cage, that
1:14:43
Speaker 1: he may be your thrall. Perhaps he there may learn
1:14:47
Speaker 1: with rare delight to sing your name and praises over
1:14:51
Speaker 1: all that it hereafter, May you not repent him lodging
1:14:57
Speaker 1: in your bosom to have lent Sonnet seventy four. Most
1:15:07
Speaker 1: happy letters framed by skillful trade, with which that happy
1:15:11
Speaker 1: name was first defined, the which three times thrice happy
1:15:17
Speaker 1: hath me made with gifts of body, fortune, and of mind.
1:15:23
Speaker 1: The first my being to me, gave by kind from
1:15:27
Speaker 1: mother's womb, derived by due descent. The second is my
1:15:32
Speaker 1: sovereign Queen most kind, that honor and large riches to me.
1:15:37
Speaker 1: Lent the third my love, my life's last ornament, by
1:15:44
Speaker 1: whom my spirit, out of dust, was raised to speak
1:15:48
Speaker 1: her praise and glory excellent of all alive, most worthy
1:15:53
Speaker 1: to be praised. Ye three Elizabeths, forever live, that such
1:16:00
Speaker 1: graces did unto me give sat At seventy five. One
1:16:10
Speaker 1: day I wrote her name upon the strand, but came
1:16:14
Speaker 1: the waves and washed it away. Again. I wrote it
1:16:18
Speaker 1: with the second hand, but came the tide and made
1:16:22
Speaker 1: my pains his prey. Vain man, said she that doest
1:16:27
Speaker 1: in vain say immortal things, so to immortalize, For I
1:16:32
Speaker 1: myself shall like to this decay, and eke my name
1:16:37
Speaker 1: be wipe it out. Likewise, not so quolte I let
1:16:42
Speaker 1: baser things devise to die in dust. But you shall
1:16:46
Speaker 1: live by fame my verse. Your virtues rare shall eat
1:16:52
Speaker 1: hern eyes, and in the heavens write your glorious name.
1:16:57
Speaker 1: Where when as death shall all the world say, our
1:17:02
Speaker 1: love shall live and later life renew sonnet. Seventy six.
1:17:11
Speaker 1: Fair Bosom fraught with virtue's richest treasure, the nest of love,
1:17:16
Speaker 1: the lodging of delight, the bower of bliss, the paradise
1:17:21
Speaker 1: of pleasure, the sacred harbor of that heavenly sprite. How
1:17:28
Speaker 1: was I ravished with your lovely sight? And my frail
1:17:31
Speaker 1: thoughts too rashly lead astray. Whilst diving deep through amorous
1:17:38
Speaker 1: insight on the sweet spoil of beauty, they did prey
1:17:44
Speaker 1: and TwixT her paps, like early fruit in may, whose
1:17:48
Speaker 1: harvest seemed to hasten now apace. They loosely did their
1:17:53
Speaker 1: wanton wings display, and bear to rest themselves, did boldly
1:18:00
Speaker 1: place sweet thoughts. I envy your so happy rest, which
1:18:07
Speaker 1: oft I wished, yet never was so blessed, Sonnet seventy seven.
1:18:19
Speaker 1: Was it a dream? Or did I see it plain?
1:18:23
Speaker 1: A goodly table of pure ivory, all spread with junkets,
1:18:28
Speaker 1: fit to entertain the greatest Prince, with pompous royalty mongst,
1:18:34
Speaker 1: which there in a silver dish did lie Two golden
1:18:39
Speaker 1: apples of unvalued price, far passing those which Hercules came by,
1:18:46
Speaker 1: or those which Atalanta did entice, exceeding sweet yet void
1:18:52
Speaker 1: of sinful vice, that many sought, Yet none could ever
1:18:59
Speaker 1: taste sweet fruit O pleasure brought from paradise by love himself,
1:19:05
Speaker 1: and in his garden placed her breast. That table was
1:19:11
Speaker 1: so richly spread my thoughts the guests which would thereon
1:19:18
Speaker 1: have fed sun At seventy eight. Lacking my love, I
1:19:27
Speaker 1: go from place to place, like a young fawn that
1:19:31
Speaker 1: late hath lost the hind, and seek each where where
1:19:35
Speaker 1: last I saw her face, whose image yet I carry
1:19:39
Speaker 1: fresh in mind. I seek the fields with her late
1:19:44
Speaker 1: footing sign'd. I seek her bower with her late presence deck'd.
1:19:50
Speaker 1: Yet nor in field nor bower I her can find.
1:19:54
Speaker 1: Yet field and bower are full of her aspect. But
1:20:00
Speaker 1: when mine eyes I thereunto direct, they idly back return
1:20:05
Speaker 1: to me again. And when I hope to see their
1:20:08
Speaker 1: true object, I find myself but fed with fancies vain cease.
1:20:15
Speaker 1: Then mine eyes to seek herself to see, and let
1:20:20
Speaker 1: my thoughts behold herself in me Sonnet seventy nine. Men
1:20:29
Speaker 1: call you fair, and you do credit it for that yourself,
1:20:33
Speaker 1: Ye daily such to see. But the true fair, that
1:20:38
Speaker 1: is the gentle wit and virtuous mind, is much more
1:20:42
Speaker 1: praised of me. For all the rest, however fair it be,
1:20:48
Speaker 1: shall turn to naught and lose that glorious hue. But
1:20:53
Speaker 1: only that is permanent and free from frail corruption that
1:20:58
Speaker 1: doth flesh ensue. That is true beauty, that doth argue
1:21:05
Speaker 1: you to be divine and born of heavenly seed, derived
1:21:11
Speaker 1: from that fair spirit from whom all true and perfect
1:21:15
Speaker 1: beauty did at first proceed. He only fair, and what
1:21:22
Speaker 1: he fare hath made all other fair like flowers untimely fade.
1:21:34
Speaker 1: Sun at eighty after so long a race as I
1:21:38
Speaker 1: have run through fairyland, which those six books compile, give
1:21:44
Speaker 1: leave to rest me, being half foredone, and together to
1:21:48
Speaker 1: myself new breath. A while. Then, as a steed refreshed
1:21:53
Speaker 1: after toil out of my prison, I will break anew,
1:21:58
Speaker 1: and stoutly will let's second work a soil with strong
1:22:02
Speaker 1: endeavor and attention new till then give leave to me
1:22:09
Speaker 1: in pleasant mew to sport my muse and sing my
1:22:13
Speaker 1: love sweet praise the contemplation of whose heavenly hue my
1:22:19
Speaker 1: spirit to an higher pitch will raise. But let her
1:22:24
Speaker 1: praises yet be low and mean, fit for the handmaid
1:22:30
Speaker 1: of the fairy queen son. At eighty one. Fair is
1:22:38
Speaker 1: my love when her fair golden hairs with the loose
1:22:42
Speaker 1: wind ye waving chance to mark fair when the rose
1:22:46
Speaker 1: in her red cheeks appears, or in her eyes the
1:22:50
Speaker 1: fire of love does spark. Fair when her breast like
1:22:55
Speaker 1: a rich laden bark with precious merchandise, she forth the
1:23:00
Speaker 1: lay fair when that cloud of pride which oft doth
1:23:05
Speaker 1: dark her goodly light with smiles, she drives away. But
1:23:11
Speaker 1: fairest she whenso she doth display the gait with pearls
1:23:17
Speaker 1: and rubies richly dight through which her words so wise knew,
1:23:23
Speaker 1: make their way to bear the message of her gentle sprite.
1:23:28
Speaker 1: The rest be works of nature's wonder meant, but this
1:23:33
Speaker 1: the work of heart's astonishment. Sonnet eighty two, Joy of
1:23:40
Speaker 1: my life full oft. For loving you, I bless my
1:23:45
Speaker 1: lot that was so lucky placed. But then the more
1:23:50
Speaker 1: your own mishap I rue that are so much by
1:23:55
Speaker 1: so mean love embased. For had the equal heavens so
1:24:00
Speaker 1: much you graced in this as in the rest emote
1:24:04
Speaker 1: invent some heavenly wit whose verse could have enchased your
1:24:08
Speaker 1: glorious name in golden monument. But since ye deigned so
1:24:15
Speaker 1: goodly to relent to me your thrall in whom is
1:24:19
Speaker 1: little worth, that little that I am shall all be
1:24:24
Speaker 1: spent in setting your immortal praises forth, whose lofty argument
1:24:31
Speaker 1: uplifting me shall lift you up unto an high degree,
1:24:40
Speaker 1: Sonnet eighty three, My hungry eyes, through greedy covet eyes
1:24:46
Speaker 1: still to behold the object of their pain with no contentment,
1:24:51
Speaker 1: can themselves suffice? But having pine, and having not complain
1:24:58
Speaker 1: for lacking it, they cannot life sustain, And seeing it,
1:25:04
Speaker 1: they gaze on it the more in their amazement, Like
1:25:08
Speaker 1: Narcissus vain, whose eyes hymn starv'd so plenty makes me poor.
1:25:17
Speaker 1: Yet are mine eyes so fill'd with the store of
1:25:20
Speaker 1: that fair sight, that nothing else they brook but loathe
1:25:24
Speaker 1: the things which they did like before, and can no
1:25:28
Speaker 1: more endure on them to look All this world's glory
1:25:33
Speaker 1: seemeth vain to me, and all their shows but shadows
1:25:39
Speaker 1: saving she son At eighty four. Let not one spark
1:25:49
Speaker 1: a filthy, lustful fire break out that may her sacred
1:25:54
Speaker 1: peace molest ne'er one light glance of sensual desire attempt
1:25:59
Speaker 1: to work her gentle minds unrest but pure affections bread
1:26:04
Speaker 1: in spotless breast, and modest thoughts breathed from well temper'd sprites,
1:26:11
Speaker 1: go visit her in her bower of rest, accompanied with
1:26:15
Speaker 1: angelic delights. There fill yourself with those most joyous sights,
1:26:22
Speaker 1: the which myself could never yet attain. But speak no
1:26:27
Speaker 1: word to her of these sad plights which her too
1:26:30
Speaker 1: constant stiffness doth constrain. Only behold her rare perfection, and
1:26:39
Speaker 1: bless your fortune's fair election, Sonnet eighty five. The world
1:26:47
Speaker 1: that cannot deem of worthy things when I do praise her,
1:26:51
Speaker 1: say I do, but flatter so does the cuckoo and
1:26:55
Speaker 1: the mavisings begin his witless note a pace to clatter.
1:27:00
Speaker 1: But they that skill not of so heavenly matter, all
1:27:04
Speaker 1: that they know, not en thee or admire. Rather than envy.
1:27:10
Speaker 1: Let them wonder at her, but not to deem of
1:27:13
Speaker 1: her dessert. Aspire deep in the closet of my parts
1:27:19
Speaker 1: entire her worth is written with a golden quill, that me,
1:27:24
Speaker 1: with heavenly fury doth inspire, and my glad mouth with
1:27:28
Speaker 1: her sweet praises fill which, when as fame in her
1:27:34
Speaker 1: shrill trump shall thunder. Let the world choose to envy
1:27:39
Speaker 1: or to wonder, son At eighty six. Venomous tongue tipp'd
1:27:48
Speaker 1: with vile adders, sting of that self kind, with which
1:27:52
Speaker 1: the furies fell their snaky heads do comb, from which
1:27:56
Speaker 1: a spring of poisoned words and spiteful speeches. Well, let
1:28:01
Speaker 1: all the plagues and horrid pains of hell upon thee fall,
1:28:06
Speaker 1: for thine accursed higher, that with false forged lies which
1:28:10
Speaker 1: thou didst tell in my true loved its stir up
1:28:14
Speaker 1: coals of ire the sparks, whereof let kindle thine own fire,
1:28:19
Speaker 1: and catching hold on thine own wicked head, consume thee
1:28:24
Speaker 1: quite that didst with guile conspire in my sweet peace
1:28:29
Speaker 1: such breeches to have bread. Shame be thy meed, and
1:28:34
Speaker 1: mischief thy reward due to thyself that it for me
1:28:40
Speaker 1: prepared son at eighty seven. Since I did leave the
1:28:49
Speaker 1: presence of my love, many long weary days I have outworn,
1:28:55
Speaker 1: and many knights that slowly seemed to move their sad
1:28:59
Speaker 1: pro tracked from evening until morn. For when as day
1:29:04
Speaker 1: the heaven of the dawn, I wish that night the
1:29:08
Speaker 1: noiouse day would end, And when as night hath thus
1:29:12
Speaker 1: of light forlorn, I wish that day would shortly reascend.
1:29:19
Speaker 1: Thus I the time, with expectation, spend and feign my
1:29:23
Speaker 1: grief with changes to beguile that further seems his term
1:29:29
Speaker 1: still to extend, and maketh every minute seem a mile.
1:29:36
Speaker 1: So sorrows still doth seem too long to last, but
1:29:41
Speaker 1: joyous hours to fly away too fast. And of Section
1:29:49
Speaker 1: twenty nine of Ameretti by Edmund Spencer sunn At eighty eight.
1:29:55
Speaker 1: Since I have lacked the comfort of that light, the
1:29:59
Speaker 1: which was wont to lead my thoughts astray, I wander
1:30:03
Speaker 1: as in darkness of the night, afraid of every dangerous
1:30:07
Speaker 1: least dismay, nay aught I see, though, in the clearest day,
1:30:13
Speaker 1: when others gaze upon their shadows, vein but the only
1:30:17
Speaker 1: image of that heavenly ray, whereof some glance now in
1:30:22
Speaker 1: mine eye remain of which beholding the idea plane through
1:30:27
Speaker 1: contemplation of my purest part. With light thereof I do
1:30:33
Speaker 1: myself sustain and thereon feed my love a famish'd heart.
1:30:39
Speaker 1: But with such brightness whilst I fill my mind, I
1:30:44
Speaker 1: star my body, and mine eyes do blind sun At
1:30:52
Speaker 1: eighty nine. Like as the culver on the barred bough
1:30:58
Speaker 1: sits mourning for the absence of her mate, and in
1:31:01
Speaker 1: her songs sends many a wishful vow for his return
1:31:05
Speaker 1: that seems to linger late. So I alone, now left disconsolate,
1:31:12
Speaker 1: mourn to myself the absence of my love, and wandering
1:31:16
Speaker 1: here and there all desolate, seek with my plaints to
1:31:21
Speaker 1: match that mournful dove, Na joy of aught that under
1:31:25
Speaker 1: heaven doth hove can comfort me. But her own joyous sight,
1:31:31
Speaker 1: whose sweet aspect both God and man can move in
1:31:36
Speaker 1: her unspotted pleasance to delight. Dark is my day, while
1:31:42
Speaker 1: her fair light I miss, and dead my life that
1:31:47
Speaker 1: wants such lively bliss. The concluding poem in youth before
1:31:57
Speaker 1: I wax it old the blind boy venus baby, for
1:32:01
Speaker 1: want of cunning made me bold in bitter hive to
1:32:05
Speaker 1: grope for honey. But when he saw me stung and cry,
1:32:10
Speaker 1: he took his wings, and away did fly. As Diane hutted.
1:32:16
Speaker 1: On a day she chanced to come where Cupid lay
1:32:20
Speaker 1: his quiver by his head. One of his shafts she
1:32:24
Speaker 1: stole away, and one of hers did close convey into
1:32:29
Speaker 1: the other's stead. With that love wounded my love's heart.
1:32:34
Speaker 1: But Diane beasts with Cupid start. I saw in secret
1:32:40
Speaker 1: to my dame how little Cupid humbly came and said
1:32:45
Speaker 1: to her all, hail my mother. But when he saw
1:32:49
Speaker 1: me laugh for shame, his face with bashful blood did flame,
1:32:54
Speaker 1: not knowing venus from the other. Then never blush, cupid,
1:32:59
Speaker 1: quoth I. For many have heard in this beauty. Upon
1:33:04
Speaker 1: a day, as love lay sweetly slumbering all in his
1:33:08
Speaker 1: mother's lap, a gentle bee, with his loud trumpet, murmuring
1:33:13
Speaker 1: about him, flew by, hap whereof when he was waken'd
1:33:17
Speaker 1: with the noise, and saw the beast so small? What'st this,
1:33:21
Speaker 1: quoth he that gives so great a voice that wakens
1:33:25
Speaker 1: men withal in angry? Wise he flies about and threatens
1:33:29
Speaker 1: all with courage, stout to whom his mother, closely smiling, said,
1:33:36
Speaker 1: TwixT earnest and TwixT game. See thou thyself likewise, art,
1:33:41
Speaker 1: little maid, if thou regard the same, and yet thou
1:33:45
Speaker 1: sufferest neither gods in sky nor men in earth to rest.
1:33:50
Speaker 1: But when thou art disposed cruelly their sleep, thou dost
1:33:54
Speaker 1: go lest then either change thy cruelty or give I
1:34:00
Speaker 1: leave unto the fly. Na'theless the cruel boy, not so
1:34:06
Speaker 1: content would needs the fly pursue? And in his hand
1:34:10
Speaker 1: with heedless hardiment him caught for to subdue, But when
1:34:15
Speaker 1: on it he hasty hand did lay the bee him stung. Therefore,
1:34:21
Speaker 1: now out alas he cried, and well away thy wounded
1:34:25
Speaker 1: am full sore. The fly that I so much did scorn,
1:34:29
Speaker 1: hath hurt me with his little horn. Unto his mother.
1:34:35
Speaker 1: Straight he weeping came, and of his grief complain'd, who
1:34:39
Speaker 1: could not choose but laugh at his fond game, though
1:34:43
Speaker 1: sad to see him pain'd think, now, quoth she, my son,
1:34:48
Speaker 1: how great the smart of those whom thou dost wound
1:34:53
Speaker 1: full many thou hast pricked to the heart that pity
1:34:56
Speaker 1: never found. Therefore, henceforth some pity take when thou dost
1:35:01
Speaker 1: spoil of lover's make. She took him straight, full piteously, lamenting,
1:35:08
Speaker 1: and wrapped him in her smock. She wrapped him softly,
1:35:12
Speaker 1: all the while repenting that he the fly did mock.
1:35:16
Speaker 1: She dress'd his wound, and it embalmed well with salve
1:35:20
Speaker 1: of sovereign might. And then she bathed him in a
1:35:23
Speaker 1: dainty well, the well of dear delight. Who would not
1:35:28
Speaker 1: oft be stung as this to be so bathed in
1:35:32
Speaker 1: venus bliss. The wanton boy was shortly well recured of
1:35:37
Speaker 1: that his malady, but he soon after afresh again inured
1:35:42
Speaker 1: his former cruelty. And since that time he wounded Hath
1:35:47
Speaker 1: myself with his sharp dart of love. And thou forget'st
1:35:52
Speaker 1: the cruel, careless elf his mother's hest to prove. So
1:35:58
Speaker 1: now I languish till he please my pining anguish to appease.
