- 0:00If you ask for a monarchy, not only are they going to take your
- 0:03sons for military service, but they will take your daughters.
- 0:07All Israel knew that Samuel was confirmed to be a prophet of the
- 0:12Lord. Saul acts unwisely and says all
- 0:15just do the sacrifice. He's from Benjamin I mentioned,
- 0:19not from Levi. He did not have authority to do
- 0:21this in this case. And Samuel says this is wrong.
- 0:27And the women of the area always are praising these war heroes.
- 0:31And they come up with these songs about, you know, Saul
- 0:34kills his thousands and David kills his 10s of thousands.
- 0:38Saul, in order to get rid of David, thinks if I arrange a
- 0:42marriage, that means he has to be a soldier for life.
- 0:46And then the Philistines will kill him and I'll and I'll be
- 0:49rid of him. The young Michael falls head
- 0:52over heels for David. And in fact, Michael is the only
- 0:58female in the entire Old Testament who is recorded as.
- 1:05Hello. Welcome back to Scripture
- 1:07Central. I'm Lynn Hilton Wilson, and I'm
- 1:10so thrilled to be able to talk about the Old Testament women,
- 1:13these handmaidens and harems and heroines as part of the
- 1:16Scripture Central team who tries to build enduring faith in Jesus
- 1:19Christ. And as these women find their
- 1:22Messiah, we too are seeking our Savior and hoping to come unto
- 1:27him and all that we do. And I'm convinced that these
- 1:30Scriptures, these wonderful verses in First Samuel 8 through
- 1:3416 have things for all of us to learn and how to be a better
- 1:38disciple of Jesus Christ and how to be closer to our God.
- 1:42The problem that arose at this time of the Judges is that the
- 1:46righteous Eli had wicked children.
- 1:50He does not correct them. And then Samuel comes up and
- 1:55Samuel has wicked children. He does try to correct them, but
- 1:58they're not doing good. And so the people say we want a
- 2:02king. And the prophet Samuel begins to
- 2:05prophecy. And he says if you ask for a
- 2:08monarchy, not only are they going to take your sons for
- 2:11military service, but they will take your daughters.
- 2:14They're going to be for domestic royal service.
- 2:16They're going to be fundamentally change your family
- 2:19structure. You're going to have cooks and
- 2:21perfumers and bakers and bread and, and all these other things
- 2:25in the royal service of the palace.
- 2:27And you are going to be your family life is going to be
- 2:31different. You're, it's going to be
- 2:32completely not up to you. The king can just come and take
- 2:35somebody, and that's exactly what we see happen when King
- 2:39Saul is put in place. If you had a strong young man,
- 2:41he's gone. If you had a beautiful girl,
- 2:43she's gone. And it's a tragic situation that
- 2:49the beautiful cohesive unit that was so needed as an agricultural
- 2:58environment to have your children and everyone, your wife
- 3:01and your everyone is working for the same goal every day.
- 3:06And that's destroyed when a king comes in and says, I'd like you
- 3:10to come and do the Queen's hair or I'd like you to come and make
- 3:14bread for all of mice, my staff. So unfortunately, that prophecy
- 3:20came to pass. Now, I did not find any
- 3:24reference in the entire Old Testament to Samuel's wife
- 3:27except for the fact that she has two sons.
- 3:31So I'd like to just talk a little bit on this wonderful
- 3:35Samuel. Now remember, this is the
- 3:36prophet who is the son of Hannah and Elkanah.
- 3:39These two sons that they have, Joel and Amage, the Bible never
- 3:44mentions their mother, but we assume that as a man of God and
- 3:51as the high priest, he married a virgin.
- 3:54That's one of the rules written out in Leviticus.
- 3:57So she was probably very young. Marriages were often done as
- 4:00soon as a girl could procreate, and even if it were a little bit
- 4:04later, she's probably still in her teens before this marriage
- 4:08takes place. We don't know anything about her
- 4:11though, so I don't know if she travelled with Samuel, if she
- 4:15missed him when he was gone, or if she even lived beyond the
- 4:19birth of these two sons. We we have no information but
- 4:23she would have been called in the Old Testament vocabulary a
- 4:27prophetess. Isaiah's wife is referred to as
- 4:30a prophetess and elsewhere in the Bible, specifically in the
- 4:34Book of Revelation chapter 19, we're told that you if you have
- 4:38the spirit of prophecy, you have a testimony that Jesus is the
- 4:42Christ or in the Old Testament vocabulary that Jehovah is the
- 4:48Messiah, will be the Messiah. I also just have to ask, what
- 4:52would it be like to be married to someone like Samuel, this man
- 4:55who was raised by God's words and and so sensitive to the
- 5:01spirit that he hears the voice of the Lord?
- 5:03In fact, I just love this statement.
- 5:05It says in first Samuel 3 verse 19, Samuel grew and the Lord was
- 5:10with him, and he let none of Samuel's words fall to the
- 5:14ground. And so all Israel, from Dan to
- 5:18Beersheba, from the North Coast to the South Coast, all Israel
- 5:22knew that Samuel was confirmed to be a prophet of the Lord.
- 5:27That's who she got to marry. And this marriage was arranged
- 5:32perhaps by El Canal. We don't know anything about it,
- 5:35perhaps by Eli. But we do know that she was able
- 5:40to conceive and bear two children after the time of, you
- 5:45know, Eli misusing the Ark of the Covenant to taking it out of
- 5:49the Tabernacle and taking it to the battlefield, which is not
- 5:52what the Lord says. According to our biblical text,
- 5:55the whole area of Shiloh was destroyed.
- 5:59And when they get the Ark of the covenant back during the era of
- 6:04Samuel I or a little bit thereafter, they re establish a
- 6:08new home for the Tabernacle and that's in Knob.
- 6:13Now, archaeological evidence has not found exactly the city or
- 6:17the where area that is, but we know that it's down in the area
- 6:22of Mount Scopus, very close to the Mount of Olives and Mount
- 6:27Moriah. But Jerusalem has not yet been
- 6:30taken. So Jerusalem is not part of the
- 6:32Israel. In fact, there's very little
- 6:34land that's part of Israel. That's the nice lands.
- 6:37The part that is the Philistines are on the coast, lands where
- 6:40you have more rain, where you have access to the
- 6:43Mediterranean. And then the Israelites are
- 6:45still hemmed up in the mountains and in the more barren lands,
- 6:50and that's where they are conquering and able to make some
- 6:53headway. But first Samuel 713 says the
- 6:57hand of the Lord was against the Philistines all the days of
- 7:01Samuel. So when Samuel is acting as the
- 7:04judge, Israel had peace with the Amorites.
- 7:07It says in Chapter 7, verse 14. Now the significance of this
- 7:11statement is not to let us know that not only were the
- 7:15Philistine people on the coastal plains subdued by Israel, but
- 7:18also that the strongest Canaanite tribes of the interior
- 7:23we're all corralled into working together under Samuel.
- 7:28The challenge here it with my understanding is if Samuel was
- 7:32known from north to South, why then do we talk about him making
- 7:35these pilgrimage between these three towns, Bethel, Rama and
- 7:40Mizpah? And he's there a lot.
- 7:42Perhaps this is where his family lived, I'm not exactly sure.
- 7:45But we hear that he's there often and that's where the text
- 7:49takes us, even though we don't know much about Samuel's wife.
- 7:52If she were alive, she would have probably known the
- 7:55Tabernacle in Shiloh or perhaps just down later in Knob.
- 8:00But her husband was not only the high priest, but he became the
- 8:051st of this new line of prophets.
- 8:08You know, she would have known that he is leading Israel back
- 8:11to God. She would have known and been a
- 8:13part of the plan to have this period of peace in defeating the
- 8:17Philistines at Mizpah. And this change from judges to
- 8:21kingship she may have been part of as well.
- 8:23You know, Samuel was so reluctant to anoint Saul as the
- 8:26first king. I assume she was part of these
- 8:28discussions and was aware of this, but following Saul's
- 8:33disobedience, which she would have probably also known, you
- 8:36know, God sent Samuel to Bethlehem to anoint David
- 8:40shortly after Saul was anointed, actually.
- 8:42And there is rivalry and contention ever since then.
- 8:46But at the within her own family, though, her sons Joel
- 8:51and Aberjah are dishonest. You know, I'm sure it was
- 8:55heartbreaking for both of the parents because this prompted
- 8:59Israel to demand a king. So prior to Samuel's death, he
- 9:03gathers Israel and the Lord says they have not rejected you,
- 9:08they've rejected me. And I'll tell you who I want as
- 9:11my king. In chapter 8 of Samuel, we
- 9:13learned that when his sons were old enough, he sent them clear
- 9:17down to the southern town of Beersheba in order possibly to
- 9:21keep them away from the greater population because he knew that
- 9:24they were judging unrighteously. I don't, I don't know, but it
- 9:28says in verse 3 of chapter 8 and five in the BSB translation.
- 9:34His sons did not walk in his ways.
- 9:37They turned aside toward dishonest gain.
- 9:39They accepted bribes. They perverted justice.
- 9:42So all the elders of Israel gathered unto Samuel at Rhema,
- 9:47and that's where they have the appointment of the king.
- 9:50I assume his wife would have been there.
- 9:53It's actually interesting in verse, not in Chapter 9.
- 9:55So they, the women who are, if they well are the local source
- 10:00of information, you know, the women are there, they gather,
- 10:02they communicate every day. And so when Saul and his
- 10:05servants are seeking for Samuel, they see these women at their
- 10:10daily tasks, drawing water from the well, and they ask the women
- 10:14and they become the source of this great information.
- 10:16Oh, Samuel's coming. He's going to offer a sacrifice
- 10:19today. He's going to be here anyway.
- 10:21It just illustrates how the women's daily routine place them
- 10:25at the center of community knowledge.
- 10:27You know, it makes them these natural informants of these
- 10:29travelers seeking guidance. Saul is announced king and I've
- 10:33got a map on my slides of his Kingdom.
- 10:37We also to learn by chapter 14 a little bit about his family
- 10:40life. I assume he had already been
- 10:42married. He's very tall.
- 10:44It says he's a foot. He's a shoulder taller than
- 10:46everybody else. So at least a foot, if not a
- 10:49little bit more than that, taller than any of the people in
- 10:52the community. And so he wasn't a young 1415
- 10:56year old at this time. You know, he's already a full
- 10:58grown to his full height. So I assume he's already been
- 11:02married. His wife is a hinom, and she,
- 11:05it's a Hebrew name that literally means the brother of
- 11:08pleasantness or my brother is pleasant.
- 11:11But she marries Saul before he's king.
- 11:14And she has seven children who live.
- 11:16Jonathan, Abadab, Mahesha, Ishvi and Ishbashish are the sons, and
- 11:22then the two daughters, Murab and Michael.
- 11:26So also has a concubine we hear about later, and we'll talk
- 11:29about that when we get to Second Samuel.
- 11:30But we have no details at all about her role.
- 11:34But she would have been the first queen.
- 11:36You know, she would have been moving in and deciding where
- 11:39they're going to live. There's no Jerusalem yet.
- 11:41There's no palace there. But she would have had to make
- 11:44these important roles as they change the Kingdom from a place
- 11:47of judges to a unified location under one king.
- 11:52She also has to face the challenge of being married to a
- 11:55man who really battles internal conflicts of jealousy and
- 11:58hatred. I think he he becomes mentally
- 12:01ill over some of these things. I'm sure everyone knows the
- 12:03story of David and Goliath. You know, Saul should have been
- 12:06the one as the king who's A at least a foot taller than anybody
- 12:10else who's out fighting Goliath. He doesn't do it.
- 12:13And we know the story of our wonderful stripling, David
- 12:16coming out. Stripling is the only time used
- 12:18in the Bible is for David in the Book of Mormon.
- 12:21Of course, it's for our 2000 stripling warriors under the
- 12:25sons of Ammon. So even though Saul is jealous
- 12:28and plagued with bouts of of discouragement and depression
- 12:32and he says an evil spirit, we know that these people are from
- 12:35the tribe of Benjamin. They're a very small tribe.
- 12:37He initially was a very humble man.
- 12:39I assume that he says I'm the least in my father's house, you
- 12:42know, But King Saw set up this capital in that same land,
- 12:46Benjamin, where he's from. So this is where his family is
- 12:48living. And he built up a fortress and
- 12:52palace in Gibeah. It's about 3 or 4 miles north of
- 12:56where Jerusalem will be. And that's where we first learn
- 13:01of Merab, this daughter and her siblings and her little sister,
- 13:06Michael and Saul, in order to get rid of David, thinks if I
- 13:12arrange a marriage, that means he has to be a soldier for life.
- 13:16And then the Philistines will kill him and I'll and I'll be
- 13:19rid of him. And so he arranges this
- 13:22marriage. But with with this young
- 13:26stripling, David, but David is, is, is humbled and he says, oh,
- 13:31there's no way I could marry the King's daughter.
- 13:34I don't I, I don't have any kind of a dowry.
- 13:36I'm just a poor shepherd. Even though Saul had plotted
- 13:40this, we near nothing other than this proposal agreement.
- 13:45You know, we heard nothing more about it.
- 13:47And so we assume it didn't happen.
- 13:49And it says later on that Saul gave his oldest daughter to
- 13:54someone else. And so David's reticence, who
- 13:57you know, who am I that I can marry into the the King's house
- 14:02was enough that that that that didn't work and that never came
- 14:06to pass. But his second daughter, the
- 14:09young Michael in Samuel 14 verse 49, falls head over heels for
- 14:18David. And in fact, Michael is the only
- 14:22female in the entire Old Testament who is recorded as
- 14:26falling in love with her husband and asking for him to be her
- 14:31husband. This is a very unique case.
- 14:35And it's you can tell she's been raised as the younger daughter
- 14:38of a king who might have some clout.
- 14:42And her father, King Saul, arranges this marriage, and he's
- 14:46still hoping to trap and plot David, you know, first with
- 14:50Maribon, now with Michael. So when he asks about a
- 14:55potential patrol, though I assume David now has been around
- 15:00the family enough, I think he must also care a little more
- 15:04about Michael or feeling maybe something about her because he
- 15:08now says, what can I give you for a patrol, though, Price, You
- 15:12know, what can I do as a dowry? And that's when Saul comes up
- 15:16with this crazy plan. It can't be money.
- 15:19You know, he couldn't fulfill that.
- 15:22But he uses this ruse and because he already knows that
- 15:25King David has been anointed the next king, but he comes up with
- 15:30this crazy ruse. You know, you've got to give me
- 15:32the you got to circumcise 100 Philistines.
- 15:35Well, David double S that number, perhaps to show his his
- 15:39love for Michael, perhaps to show his obedience to Saul.
- 15:44But Saul is not placated and still tries to come in and kill
- 15:48him. And Michael becomes the
- 15:50instrument to allow David out her window and hides something
- 15:55else in the bed. But Saul is so mad at David that
- 16:00he separates his daughter from him.
- 16:04When David runs out in hiding and and starts having battles in
- 16:08across the southern part away from Saul, he takes Michael and
- 16:12gives her to someone else and she is then married to a
- 16:16different person and she enters polyandry.
- 16:19She's married to two people at once, which is tragic.
- 16:23But in a few weeks when Saul is finally gone and David is made
- 16:29king, one of the first things he does, it says I want my wife
- 16:33Michael back. However, by this time he is
- 16:36entered into polygamy. He has other wives, He has other
- 16:39children. It's not the same young
- 16:42Twitterpated first love. In fact, poor Michael's husband
- 16:47comes crying afterward. We'll read about that in a few
- 16:50weeks. But as Michael is stepping in as
- 16:53the one of the women in the harem now for King David, she
- 17:00obviously does not have the same feelings because she is
- 17:03embarrassed by the way he's acting and, and out of the
- 17:07sincerity of David's heart as he's praising the Lord.
- 17:11He's he's a musician, he's an artist.
- 17:13He's out there dancing and she's embarrassed at at what he's
- 17:18wearing. She's embarrassed by his
- 17:19behavior and she's she expresses her distaste and he responds
- 17:26back also with letting you know that their relationship was not
- 17:31what it was initially. And the scripture say because of
- 17:35that she was barren. I I don't know if that's
- 17:40accurately a description of what happened, but that's what the
- 17:43text says. The only other woman that I want
- 17:46to talk about here in these verses is the mother of Ogg.
- 17:51Now in first Samuel 15, Saul is still alive and Saul is going
- 17:56out to kill the Amalekites. And you remember David is
- 17:59killing more than and the, and the women of the area always are
- 18:03praising these war heroes and they come up with these songs
- 18:06about, you know, Saul kills his thousands and David kills his
- 18:1010s of thousands. And so the community, the women
- 18:13in the community who are the musicians and, and, and
- 18:17celebrating Israel's military game are adding wounds to Saul's
- 18:25heart that he is not the person that God has authorized to be in
- 18:29the throne anymore and that he has lost the grace of God
- 18:33because of some of his poor choices.
- 18:36And one of those poor choices that Saul did is Samuel gave him
- 18:40the commandment that you need to kill everything in this
- 18:43community of the Amalekites. And as Saul went out to battle,
- 18:50he decided to spare quote the best of the sheep and the cattle
- 18:54and the fat calves, the lambs that are good.
- 18:57And he also saved the king. Now both of those things were
- 19:02going against what the Lord asked him to do.
- 19:04And then the third mistake he made, which was tragic, is
- 19:08Samuel said, I will be back here and I will offer sacrifice at
- 19:12the end of this, at the end of this battle to celebrate the
- 19:17Lord's victory. But as he is a little bit
- 19:21delayed, there's no clocks and the people are getting
- 19:23impatient. Saul acts unwisely and says all
- 19:27just do the sacrifice. He's from Benjamin I mentioned,
- 19:31not from Levi. He did not have authority to do
- 19:34this in this case. And Samuel says this is wrong,
- 19:40you acted incorrectly, you didn't wait, and I told you to
- 19:45obey with exactness. And you left the king and all
- 19:49these animals. Well, Saul says all these
- 19:50animals were just for sacrifices and he says you're not getting
- 19:54it. And then Samuel prophecies in
- 19:56first Samuel chapter 15 verse 33.
- 19:58And I'm not going to read it in the NLT translation as your
- 20:02sword has killed the sons of many mothers.
- 20:06Now your mother will be childless.
- 20:09And this mother of Ogg, the king of Ogg, who was then killed with
- 20:15Samuel's direction, is, is now going to be a widow and lose her
- 20:22children. Which just brings up this point
- 20:25that the women and children in warfare are left often as the
- 20:33empty victims. Not that they were the first
- 20:36ones killed, but that they are left with great sorrow and
- 20:41mourning. And war is a difficult,
- 20:43challenging thing, and yet God had commanded it in this case.
- 20:50And God had said, I want the wicked gone so that I can raise
- 20:54up a righteous posterity. And as I step back and look at
- 20:57this from a, from a celestial view, if I take a global
- 21:01perspective on this, I can say it's actually kinder for God to
- 21:08completely obliterate a wicked society so that these people
- 21:12have the opportunity in the next life to hear the gospel, to
- 21:17learn about the teachings of the Savior, to learn about loving
- 21:21God and loving your neighbor and, and the Savior of the world
- 21:25who will come. Because where they were living
- 21:27at that time, they were completely blinded by the
- 21:30wickedness of these people. So when God commands it, I have
- 21:35come at peace to saying no matter how hard this is, all
- 21:41these things will give us experience and be for our good.
- 21:43And perhaps it's these tragedies that put these people in the
- 21:47right state of mind when they are on the other side of the
- 21:51veil to receive the teachings of Christ with a more humble and
- 21:54meek heart. I don't have all the answers.
- 21:58I don't understand sometimes why God commanded entire nations to
- 22:03be destroyed, but I do know that I trust God.
- 22:08I trust God in the big picture, and I also trust Him in my life.
- 22:12I trust His timing. I trust His small axe.
- 22:16I trust that if I follow Him, I will be able to be His servant.
- 22:23And I pray that each of us, as we dive into our scriptures this
- 22:27week, can find lessons that you can apply to your life, that we
- 22:31can all be better people this day by following our Savior in
- 22:36the name of Jesus Christ, Amen.
