- 0:00Speaker 1: We have a listener that wants to know bo, please
- 0:04Speaker 1: ask Bar two what Philip Montgomery brings to the staff.
- 0:10Speaker 1: I haven't heard a whole lot about him. I would
- 0:13Speaker 1: like to know where he fits in and what he
- 0:16Speaker 1: could possibly do for Jeff Levy and Camarrio Taylor. So
- 0:23Speaker 1: for our listeners, Philip Montgomery, he's been at Auburn, he's
- 0:27Speaker 1: been a head coach at Tulsa. He's bounced around a
- 0:31Speaker 1: little bit. I think he's got a pretty solid probably
- 0:34Speaker 1: B minus or B grade as a coach. He's a veteran.
- 0:39Speaker 1: Levy and Philip Montgomery. I think we're together at Baylor
- 0:42Speaker 1: under Art Brols. Everybody knows what they did on offense
- 0:47Speaker 1: with r G three and that other dude I can't
- 0:50Speaker 1: remember his name at Baylor and they had a remember
- 0:57Speaker 1: Art Brows was hired by Mike Leach. Our Bris was
- 1:00Speaker 1: a legendary coach in Texas high school football, and Leech
- 1:04Speaker 1: thought that that would be a good move for Texas
- 1:07Speaker 1: Tech to have all those connections. So in like nineteen
- 1:10Speaker 1: ninety nine or something, when Leech got hired from Oklahoma
- 1:13Speaker 1: at Texas Tech, he hired Art Briles. That gave Bris
- 1:17Speaker 1: his you know, Chance his big shot, and I think
- 1:22Speaker 1: he became the head coach at Houston and then and
- 1:25Speaker 1: then Baylor. So bar two, can you tell me? What
- 1:30Speaker 1: can you tell me about offensive assistant coach Philip Montgomery
- 1:34Speaker 1: under Jeff Levy?
- 1:35Speaker 2: Okay, so right off the top of my head, without
- 1:37Speaker 2: pulling any numbers, Okay, Okay, I know him as a
- 1:41Speaker 2: play caller at Tulsa of having a really solid run. Okay,
- 1:47Speaker 2: he wasn't the play caller at Baylor.
- 1:49Speaker 3: Okay, we know that, right. Art Brill's never let nobody
- 1:52Speaker 3: call plays.
- 1:52Speaker 2: No, neither is Steve's like it's like saying it just
- 1:55Speaker 2: does Kyle Flood call plays at Texas?
- 1:57Speaker 3: Or Steeve Sarkisy No, right, Stive Cults plays shut up? Right?
- 2:01Speaker 3: So so at Baylor?
- 2:03Speaker 2: Uh now, he was cooc at Baylor and so eleven, twelve, thirteen, fourteen.
- 2:10Speaker 3: Look at look at these numbers.
- 2:11Speaker 2: Gosh, Baylor number nine in the country in scoring efficiency,
- 2:16Speaker 2: number six, number six, number eleven four consecutive years. Right,
- 2:20Speaker 2: We're just we're talking about Kentucky just a second ago
- 2:23Speaker 2: average in the seventy one over sixteen years, right, and
- 2:26Speaker 2: Briles in his last four years, what was nine six,
- 2:30Speaker 2: six and eleven, six, six and eleven and nine. That's
- 2:36Speaker 2: the average of number eight in the country for four
- 2:39Speaker 2: years straight.
- 2:40Speaker 4: That is filthy.
- 2:41Speaker 3: Completely, That is the exact word.
- 2:45Speaker 4: I mean that.
- 2:45Speaker 1: That is top shelf, right, that is top shelf stuff.
- 2:50Speaker 3: Yeah, if you've got to ask how much it costs,
- 2:51Speaker 3: you can't afford it.
- 2:52Speaker 4: That's right, right, that's exactly right.
- 2:55Speaker 2: So Tulsa said, Okay, Phil Montgomery, you ain't ever called
- 2:58Speaker 2: plays before. Come on over here, and let's see how
- 3:00Speaker 2: much of art rubbed off on you. First year at Tulsa.
- 3:03Speaker 2: Forty ninth in the country. Now, let's think about Tulsa.
- 3:06Speaker 2: Tulsa's recruits in the hundreds, right, right, they don't have
- 3:09Speaker 2: to say nobody, they got no talent. It's dust bowl, right,
- 3:12Speaker 2: forty ninth in the country. Second season twenty sixth nice,
- 3:16Speaker 2: third season, forty ninth. So he went forty nine, twenty six,
- 3:20Speaker 2: forty nine out of one hundred and thirty teams.
- 3:23Speaker 3: In three consecutive years.
- 3:25Speaker 4: That's strong.
- 3:25Speaker 3: That is really strong. Okay, this guy, So this guy.
- 3:28Speaker 1: Real quick, we're talking Philip McComb, Philip Montgomery. He has
- 3:31Speaker 1: been hired by Jeff Levy as an outfensive assistant, and
- 3:35Speaker 1: we had a listener who wanted to know about if
- 3:39Speaker 1: he was good and what all he had been.
- 3:40Speaker 4: Able to accomplish. This is this is good, go ahead.
- 3:43Speaker 2: Right and then but then the wheels fell off, right, okay,
- 3:48Speaker 2: you know, so we went forty nine, twenty six, forty nine,
- 3:51Speaker 2: then we went we went kind of middle of the road.
- 3:53Speaker 2: We went ninety eight, eighty eight, sixty six, So he
- 3:58Speaker 2: dropped way down, then improved and then sixty six, then
- 4:02Speaker 2: sixty five, then fifty four, so it was coming back
- 4:05Speaker 2: up and that's when he got fired.
- 4:07Speaker 4: He was at Tulsa that long.
- 4:08Speaker 3: Yeah, he was at Tulsa from fifteen to twenty two.
- 4:11Speaker 1: Well, you just distain it at a place like that.
- 4:15Speaker 1: All in all that that tells me my takeaway is.
- 4:21Speaker 4: He's pretty damn good. You know.
- 4:22Speaker 3: He is very very solid.
- 4:24Speaker 2: Yeah, and we had him when he left Tulsa, we
- 4:26Speaker 2: still had him as a four star offensive.
- 4:29Speaker 3: Coordinator at the G six level. Okaya, that is totally solid.
- 4:32Speaker 4: So that's good.
- 4:33Speaker 1: And you know, the last couple of years have been
- 4:38Speaker 1: a dysfunctional s show in start Bull football. Wise, that
- 4:43Speaker 1: MSU football fans have to be excited to hear what
- 4:48Speaker 1: they already knew, but you laid it out, numbers on
- 4:51Speaker 1: the vast upgrade and improvement of our net over HUTZLERP
- 4:54Speaker 1: because they don't want to be HUTZLERD again. And Philip Montgomery,
- 4:58Speaker 1: if Jeff Levy allows him, could be an asset as
- 5:02Speaker 1: far as a voice in the room and a voice
- 5:03Speaker 1: on game day for Jeff Levy is what you're saying.
- 5:06Speaker 3: Right, Well, and I mean, aren't they related now?
- 5:09Speaker 4: Uh? I don't think. I mean, I know Leve's related to.
- 5:14Speaker 1: Brows because he married Browse's daughter and he's married to He's.
- 5:19Speaker 2: Okay, right, but you know the connectivity there is the
- 5:22Speaker 2: Baylor thing with the Baylor thing, right, yeah, and so
- 5:25Speaker 2: and then and then once he got fired at Tulsa,
- 5:28Speaker 2: he went to Auburn for for a season with Hugh,
- 5:32Speaker 2: and Hugh couldn't I don't think he could figure out
- 5:36Speaker 2: whether he.
- 5:37Speaker 3: Wanted to call the players or let Phil do it.
- 5:39Speaker 2: You know, if you look at Phil's play calling, Phil
- 5:41Speaker 2: and Hughes best play calling kind of mirrors each other
- 5:45Speaker 2: right in terms of their philosophy. When they run on second, third,
- 5:48Speaker 2: fourth down, Phil, Phil Montgomery and Hugh Freeze, Oh, Okay, well,
- 5:52Speaker 2: because Hugh hired him at Auburn.
- 5:54Speaker 1: Oh that's right, and it just but but Hugh taking
- 5:58Speaker 1: out Auburn. Hugh has been a a damn good play
- 6:01Speaker 1: caller at Old Miss in Arkansas State and Liberty.
- 6:03Speaker 3: Fascinating.
- 6:04Speaker 2: Okay, good, right, really really good good And then and
- 6:07Speaker 2: so and him and Phil seemed to get along in
- 6:10Speaker 2: terms of the numbers and so forth. And he was
- 6:12Speaker 2: there at Auburn for one year. It didn't work. Hugh
- 6:15Speaker 2: cut him loose. He went to the Birmingham Stallions. Twenty
- 6:17Speaker 2: twenty four, he picked up a check at Virginia Tech
- 6:20Speaker 2: and dropped a one oh four scoring efficiency. But by
- 6:23Speaker 2: then Brett Pryor is already out the door at Virginia Tech,
- 6:27Speaker 2: and so now he's at He's Mississippi State. So you know,
- 6:30Speaker 2: the potential that he brings in terms of his mind
- 6:32Speaker 2: as veteran experience, especially in play calling on the passing game,
- 6:37Speaker 2: I think is very solid.
- 6:38Speaker 4: Okay, that's that's actually some good news.
- 6:44Speaker 1: I mean, I'm still extremely skeptical because they shouldn't be
- 6:48Speaker 1: in this situation in the first place. At seven and
- 6:50Speaker 1: eighteen and one in fifteen, and this was all self
- 6:53Speaker 1: inflicted but Arnett and Montgomery and Camaro Taylor, and these
- 6:58Speaker 1: are kind of the most important pieces, are big time
- 7:01Speaker 1: upgrades compared to where they were last year.
- 7:03Speaker 2: I think the important thing here is the decision was
- 7:07Speaker 2: made to make a change right, right, and to try
- 7:11Speaker 2: to bring in a little bit more veteran presence, which
- 7:13Speaker 2: you have with Montgomery. And then defensively, we're hoping that
- 7:19Speaker 2: we get Zach Garnett twenty twenty that took the one
- 7:22Speaker 2: hundred and second defense Atssissippi State and turn it into
- 7:25Speaker 2: a top fifty defense the very next season, right, and
- 7:28Speaker 2: we're hoping for progression offensively. Okay, Mississippi States scoring efficiency
- 7:34Speaker 2: offense was eighty eighth and twenty twenty four last year
- 7:37Speaker 2: is seventy first, right, So if we can get both
- 7:40Speaker 2: the offense, or you guys can get both the offense
- 7:42Speaker 2: and the defense into the top fifty in the country,
- 7:45Speaker 2: you know, now all.
- 7:46Speaker 3: Of a sudden, you could win some games to get
- 7:51Speaker 3: to seven and five. We talked about it yesterday.
- 7:52Speaker 2: Five and seven this year is better than five and
- 7:55Speaker 2: seven last year. Schedule over schedule, right, but there's a
- 7:59Speaker 2: it's amazing the difference perception wise between five and seven
- 8:03Speaker 2: and seven and five.
- 8:04Speaker 4: Or six and six, no doubt.
- 8:06Speaker 2: Right, you know somewhere, Jeff's got to win that big game, right, right,
- 8:12Speaker 2: He's got to win that Texas game. He's got to
- 8:14Speaker 2: win that Florida game. He's got to win the Tennessee.
- 8:16Speaker 2: He had his shots last year, you know, and I
- 8:19Speaker 2: do believe psychologically you have to lose before you win.
- 8:23Speaker 1: And hopefully, well Jeff's done that well. But well, the
- 8:27Speaker 1: first part in.
- 8:27Speaker 2: Terms of high pressure games, closing him out in the
- 8:29Speaker 2: fourth quarter, right, you know, he had that experience last year,
- 8:33Speaker 2: couldn't close it. When he has the opportunity this year,
- 8:35Speaker 2: we expect it to be closed now, right, We expect
- 8:39Speaker 2: that game to be managed a little bit differently and
- 8:42Speaker 2: for the win to happen when he's in a situation
- 8:44Speaker 2: late in the fourth.
- 8:46Speaker 1: Okay, Okay, wow, So I don't know whether to be
- 8:54Speaker 1: optimistic or just numb after you're telling me about at
- 9:00Speaker 1: the major upgrade that is Zach Arnett over Coleman Hutzer
- 9:04Speaker 1: and Philip Montgomery would be as far as grades, Philip
- 9:07Speaker 1: Montgomery would probably be the highest graded coach on the staff,
- 9:09Speaker 1: regardless of position.
- 9:12Speaker 2: I don't have those I don't have individual staff games
- 9:15Speaker 2: in front of me. I do recall who's your running
- 9:17Speaker 2: back coach and I and I know that's you know,
- 9:20Speaker 2: the position coaches. I know that's getting a little farther
- 9:22Speaker 2: down there, but I do know the running back coach
- 9:26Speaker 2: has an excellent profile, I believe for his career. But again,
- 9:30Speaker 2: when we talk about offense and defensive coordinator pairings, even
- 9:34Speaker 2: with Zach and Jeff, we're still talking the bottom half of.
- 9:38Speaker 3: The SEC with the with with OCDC combined.
- 9:42Speaker 4: Okay, oh, okay, right, But but.
- 9:47Speaker 2: Again, but I I should also build on that is
- 9:50Speaker 2: the SEC doesn't have a lot of good O CDC combinations.
- 9:55Speaker 3: There's holes everywhere.
- 9:57Speaker 1: Right, How is that are you by? I mean, I
- 10:01Speaker 1: just think it's part of what happens. You just can't
- 10:02Speaker 1: win every every time and blah blah blah. But but
- 10:06Speaker 1: are you are you buying that the Big Ten? I mean,
- 10:09Speaker 1: Signetti's a freak, But are you buying that the Big
- 10:12Speaker 1: ten is that much better.
- 10:15Speaker 4: More well coached than the SEC?
- 10:19Speaker 3: Oh?
- 10:19Speaker 2: Not not that much better. I think we're you know,
- 10:21Speaker 2: I think we're talking coin flips, you know. But but
- 10:25Speaker 2: when we're talking about quality of the staff from top
- 10:29Speaker 2: to bottom, there, there's there's usually holes everywhere, right, but
- 10:34Speaker 2: if you if you look at the SEC, the balance
- 10:37Speaker 2: has shifted to the offensive side. The SEC is full
- 10:40Speaker 2: of great offensive play callers, right, really good ones. You know,
- 10:44Speaker 2: you start getting down into the tens and the names
- 10:46Speaker 2: are still really good defensive coordinators. Once you get past
- 10:50Speaker 2: Kirby and then Able, past Venables, who's your guy?
- 10:58Speaker 4: Who's next? See?
- 10:59Speaker 1: I would be interested to see what your your numbers
- 11:02Speaker 1: come up with. Is it Brad White or is it
- 11:06Speaker 1: Baker at l s U or Golden at Ole?
- 11:08Speaker 4: Miss?
- 11:08Speaker 3: Yeah, they're all four star guys. Yeah, none of them
- 11:11Speaker 3: are relieved, right, okay, right, yeah, all right.
- 11:15Speaker 1: The Out of Bounds Show is brought to you by

- 11:23Speaker 1: is a winning combination. Michelobultra Superior Light Beer
