- 1:15Speaker 3: awesome and crazy and so many emotions saying that, but
- 1:19Speaker 3: I am mostly out of all of them, elated to
- 1:22Speaker 3: be here behind the mic, back with the hurdlers, bringing
- 1:26Speaker 3: you some good content. I'm kicking things off this season
- 1:31Speaker 3: with the One, the Only, Jenna Bandy. She's a multi
- 1:35Speaker 3: sport athlete, a content creator, a former basketball player and
- 1:41Speaker 3: honestly an.
- 1:42Speaker 2: All around jem of a human.
- 1:44Speaker 3: I'm so excited to start this season off with her
- 1:48Speaker 3: talking about what it was like to make a major
- 1:51Speaker 3: pivot once envisioning herself playing in the WNBA, now a
- 1:56Speaker 3: content creator, as I said with millions of followers across YouTube, TikTok,
- 2:02Speaker 3: and Instagram. For today's episode, Jenna talks to me about
- 2:06Speaker 3: how it felt for her to make a drastic change
- 2:10Speaker 3: to dive in wholeheartedly to content creation during the pandemic,
- 2:15Speaker 3: leaving her job as a basketball coach and shaking the
- 2:19Speaker 3: stigmas she felt surrounded the occupation of creating content to
- 2:25Speaker 3: do what she loves, to pursue her passion and in
- 2:29Speaker 3: the process empower so many women everywhere to be fearless
- 2:34Speaker 3: and as she says, the mission of her brand game
- 2:38Speaker 3: change her heer to challenge the norm and change the game.
- 2:44Speaker 3: Jenna talks candidly about some of the double standards that
- 2:47Speaker 3: exist when watching and critiquing male versus female athletes. Plus,
- 2:53Speaker 3: Jenna also offers up some really helpful advice for anyone
- 2:56Speaker 3: who may be stuck in that negative self talk loop.
- 3:00Speaker 3: Moving on from difficult moments and reaching out toward your
- 3:05Speaker 3: big potential again. Loved kicking off season thirteen with this
- 3:09Speaker 3: conversation with Jenna. A huge thank you to her for
- 3:12Speaker 3: her time, and of course thank you to all of
- 3:15Speaker 3: you the hurdlers for making it all possible, for being
- 3:18Speaker 3: my wife, for sharing the show with your friends and
- 3:20Speaker 3: your family, and of course on social media for reviewing

- 3:35Speaker 3: social over at Hurdle podcast and I am over at
- 3:39Speaker 3: Emily Abadi. And with that, let's get to it. Let's
- 3:42Speaker 3: get to hurdling.
- 3:50Speaker 2: Today.
- 3:50Speaker 3: I am sitting down with Jenna Bandy. She's a multi
- 3:53Speaker 3: sport content creator former basketball player.
- 3:56Speaker 2: How you doing today, I'm doing great.
- 3:58Speaker 1: Thank you for having me.
- 4:00Speaker 3: Of course, I'm amped to have you, you know, I'm
- 4:02Speaker 3: amped to have you for a myriad of reasons. But
- 4:04Speaker 3: you are on a mission to empower females to be fearless,
- 4:08Speaker 3: challenge the norm, and change the game. That's like a
- 4:11Speaker 3: big statement, Jenna.
- 4:14Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean and I mean it. You know, it's
- 4:18Speaker 1: a big statement for a reason. I you know, I
- 4:20Speaker 1: have a brand called game Changer, and it's her at
- 4:23Speaker 1: the end, emphasis of the female. And yeah, I just
- 4:27Speaker 1: feel a big part of my success is because I
- 4:29Speaker 1: have been fearless and I've been authentic, and I'm not
- 4:32Speaker 1: afraid to challenge the norm and change the game.
- 4:34Speaker 2: Not afraid to challenge the norm and change the game.
- 4:37Speaker 3: And the game these days looks a lot different than
- 4:40Speaker 3: maybe you envisioned like it would look, god ten fifteen
- 4:45Speaker 3: years ago, right.
- 4:47Speaker 1: Correct, Yes, back when I was a little kid, you know,
- 4:49Speaker 1: I've dreamed of being in the WNBA, and since then
- 4:54Speaker 1: life has been life in you know, I do something
- 4:58Speaker 1: now that is very unconventional, but if you think about it,
- 5:00Speaker 1: I am technically a professional athlete now. So I dreamed
- 5:03Speaker 1: of being a WNBA player, a professional athlete, but now
- 5:07Speaker 1: in an unconventional way, I am just that. So, you know,
- 5:12Speaker 1: I played. I played high school softball and basketball. I
- 5:15Speaker 1: was really good at both, but I loved basketball more.
- 5:18Speaker 1: I ended up tearing my ACL before my senior year
- 5:22Speaker 1: in high school, so like that was just very discouraging
- 5:26Speaker 1: and I didn't know what was going to happen for me.
- 5:28Speaker 1: I ended up on my d one said cea later,
- 5:31Speaker 1: and I ended up going to Division two. My third
- 5:34Speaker 1: year in college, I ended up tearing my other aco.
- 5:37Speaker 1: So when you talk about hurdles, you know, those two
- 5:40Speaker 1: things were very challenging for me. But I knew that
- 5:43Speaker 1: if I could overcome this, I can overcome anything mentally,
- 5:46Speaker 1: not only just physically, but mentally. And then I thought
- 5:50Speaker 1: I wanted to do the whole sideline sports reporting thing
- 5:52Speaker 1: because I didn't think maybe physically my body could endure
- 5:56Speaker 1: playing overseas or even the WNBA. So I just kind
- 5:59Speaker 1: of changed my pathway. And during the whole interview process
- 6:05Speaker 1: of sideline sports reporting and getting in that industry, I
- 6:08Speaker 1: was approached with coaching from a guy that I knew
- 6:10Speaker 1: from twenty four Fitness. We played basketball the time in
- 6:13Speaker 1: my hometown, and he's like, hey, I just took over
- 6:15Speaker 1: the girls program at a local high school and I
- 6:17Speaker 1: need to fill my staff. And I'm like, I've never
- 6:20Speaker 1: coached before, but I tried it, fell in love with it,
- 6:24Speaker 1: and I thought the rest of my life that's what
- 6:26Speaker 1: I would be. A teacher and a high school coach.
- 6:30Speaker 1: I ended up getting my own varsity head coaching job,
- 6:33Speaker 1: and during that time, I had a little bit of
- 6:35Speaker 1: a following, so I had one foot in with the
- 6:37Speaker 1: influencer thing, but I didn't really like the term and
- 6:41Speaker 1: the stigma that came with being an influencer. So if
- 6:43Speaker 1: anyone asked me, what do I do? So, I'm a coach,
- 6:46Speaker 1: I'm a first ye head coach. But then it wasn't
- 6:50Speaker 1: until the pandemic hit that I had to get out
- 6:53Speaker 1: of my teaching credential program. I had to stop coaching,
- 6:56Speaker 1: and I still had to pay the bills, you know.
- 6:58Speaker 1: So I remember the day that I told mom and Dad, Hey,
- 7:03Speaker 1: I'm not going to be a teacher or a coach.
- 7:05Speaker 1: I'm going to be a YouTuber. I'm gonna be a
- 7:08Speaker 1: content creator. And that was very weird and hard for
- 7:12Speaker 1: them to hear, and they didn't understand it, you know.
- 7:14Speaker 1: But I kind of had a bet on myself and
- 7:16Speaker 1: I was able to see other people be successful in
- 7:19Speaker 1: this world and it gave me the hope and the
- 7:21Speaker 1: confidence that I could do this as well. So that's
- 7:25Speaker 1: really it wasn't until the pandemic really twenty twenty that
- 7:28Speaker 1: I put both my feet into this realm of content creation.
- 7:34Speaker 3: Yeah, And I mean there's so much to unpack here,
- 7:36Speaker 3: first and foremost. Having gone through so many hurdles up
- 7:40Speaker 3: until this point, do you remember where your mindset was
- 7:44Speaker 3: at the first hurdle, that first ACL tair in high school?
- 7:49Speaker 2: How did that feel for you?
- 7:51Speaker 1: I was sixteen years old, and I was very discouraged.
- 7:55Speaker 1: I mean, I was doing everything I thought was right.
- 7:59Speaker 1: You know, I was preparing, I was playing pick up
- 8:01Speaker 1: with guys. I was I was pushing the envelope, you know.
- 8:04Speaker 1: But I think what I did was I overdid it
- 8:07Speaker 1: a little bit, and I was I was playing pick
- 8:09Speaker 1: up against guys at Pepperdine University, and it was just
- 8:13Speaker 1: kind of a little freak accident. I just landed wrong
- 8:16Speaker 1: and it didn't really hurt that bad. I didn't really
- 8:18Speaker 1: think twice of it. I was like, oh, a little tweak,
- 8:20Speaker 1: but uh sure enough, you know, I got it checked
- 8:22Speaker 1: and there it goes. I tore my ACL and my
- 8:27Speaker 1: dream of going D one. Everyone said see you later,
- 8:29Speaker 1: you know, like it's a liability. You can't give a
- 8:31Speaker 1: scholarship to someone who has a torn ACL. I didn't
- 8:34Speaker 1: play my senior year, and I remember being just like
- 8:39Speaker 1: sitting around watching all the girls play the season that
- 8:43Speaker 1: I was going to play and it was. It was hard,
- 8:47Speaker 1: and as a sixteen year old, I didn't understand. I
- 8:50Speaker 1: was you know, I thought it was unfair why me?
- 8:53Speaker 1: But like physically it kind of made sense because I
- 8:56Speaker 1: was just a little twig. I wasn't doing any type
- 8:58Speaker 1: of white weightlifting or preventative you know, pliometrics or anything
- 9:02Speaker 1: like that. So it physically it made sense why I
- 9:04Speaker 1: tore my ACL, you know it did. But mentally, and
- 9:07Speaker 1: like universally, it's like, why is this happen to me?
- 9:10Speaker 1: Right now?
- 9:11Speaker 2: Yeah? Yeah, And that's so understandable.
- 9:13Speaker 3: Right You're in this place where you're giving your absolute
- 9:16Speaker 3: all to something and then your body just breaks, and
- 9:19Speaker 3: you're of this mindset like this.
- 9:21Speaker 2: Isn't suppost happened to me exactly? Oh man?
- 9:24Speaker 3: So you do go on though to play for Kelsey
- 9:27Speaker 3: and then eventually tear the other one. So where's the
- 9:30Speaker 3: head at the second ACL tear?
- 9:32Speaker 1: So that one was probably the most discouraging because I felt,
- 9:36Speaker 1: after tearing my first one, Okay, well, I gotta build
- 9:39Speaker 1: up my muscle. I gotta I gotta really pay attention
- 9:42Speaker 1: to my body. And I felt the most strong I've
- 9:45Speaker 1: ever been when I tore my second one, and uh
- 9:49Speaker 1: and that, like I said, that was more mentally frustrating
- 9:53Speaker 1: for me. I felt like it was the time where
- 9:56Speaker 1: I finally started to really get a lot more playing
- 9:58Speaker 1: time that I felt I deserve, and I was really
- 10:01Speaker 1: getting in a great rhythm and it was in a
- 10:03Speaker 1: game and I just I planted my foot to pass
- 10:06Speaker 1: and my leg just gave out, and that one it
- 10:09Speaker 1: hurt tremendously, screaming, crying, and I knew it. I knew,
- 10:14Speaker 1: I knew I tore it, and it was it was
- 10:16Speaker 1: the opposite one. So now I had both torn aco.
- 10:19Speaker 1: You know, like people used to call me Jenna Badney
- 10:22Speaker 1: changed the N and the D, which is actually pretty funny.
- 10:25Speaker 1: I was like, hey, like shut up, but that's funny.
- 10:28Speaker 1: I have to say, you know.
- 10:31Speaker 3: Oh my gosh, oh my god, my heart for you.
- 10:34Speaker 3: And it's interesting that you said I just wanted to
- 10:37Speaker 3: ble click on this. I was finally starting to get
- 10:39Speaker 3: more playing time than I deserved.
- 10:42Speaker 2: Why did you feel that way?
- 10:44Speaker 1: Because so I went. I went to cal State Monterey
- 10:48Speaker 1: Bay my freshman year. I was just fresh off my
- 10:51Speaker 1: knee surgery. You know, I was playing with the Big
- 10:53Speaker 1: Race and I was inconsistent. I'd have nights where my
- 10:57Speaker 1: knee felt good, and then I had nights where my
- 10:59Speaker 1: knee felt and it just felt hell heavy. And the
- 11:03Speaker 1: confidence it was in and out. I didn't feel back
- 11:07Speaker 1: to who I was. Not that I ever felt that
- 11:09Speaker 1: I'd be back to the same person, but like I
- 11:13Speaker 1: just it was in and out. My games were back
- 11:15Speaker 1: to back Friday Saturday night, so Fridays thenight feel good.
- 11:18Speaker 1: Saturday's A didn't Sophomore a year, there was someone else
- 11:21Speaker 1: in my position, so I kind of had to play
- 11:23Speaker 1: outside of my position just to get playing time. Junior year,
- 11:27Speaker 1: back into my shooting guard position, I was. I was
- 11:30Speaker 1: the six man off the bench, and I was really
- 11:33Speaker 1: like showing what I can do. Didn't have a sleeve,
- 11:36Speaker 1: didn't have any type of brace on. Just felt fully
- 11:39Speaker 1: equipped mentally, physically, everything, and then boom.
- 11:45Speaker 3: When it comes to garnering confidence in the moments where
- 11:49Speaker 3: you really want to show up but feel like that
- 11:51Speaker 3: inner voice is wavering a little bit, what advice would
- 11:55Speaker 3: you offer to other women who can find themselves in
- 11:57Speaker 3: a similar situation.
- 11:59Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean you have to put things in perspective,
- 12:03Speaker 1: you know, you have to reflect and really think about
- 12:08Speaker 1: this could be a lot worse. I could be I
- 12:11Speaker 1: couldn't be out of school, I could be somewhere else,
- 12:13Speaker 1: not less fortunate, you know. So of course, like it's
- 12:17Speaker 1: debilitating in a way, But what you have to do
- 12:20Speaker 1: is you have to continue to push through. And instead
- 12:24Speaker 1: of thinking, oh, I have to make up for all
- 12:26Speaker 1: this lost time, you have to chop it down into
- 12:30Speaker 1: what is the next right thing for me? So I
- 12:33Speaker 1: really broke it down into oh, I have six months
- 12:35Speaker 1: of recovery at least. Instead of doing that, I broke
- 12:37Speaker 1: it down into, okay, today, what is the next right
- 12:40Speaker 1: thing that I could do? What's the next right choice?
- 12:42Speaker 1: So just little by little making those choices, those right choices,
- 12:46Speaker 1: and maybe they're different for you than they are for me,
- 12:48Speaker 1: But over time those habits, it turns into confidence. Like
- 12:53Speaker 1: seeing the ball go through the net feeds that confident.
- 12:57Speaker 1: So I would say, if you're in that mindset of
- 13:01Speaker 1: oh what this is unfair? Why is this happening to me?
- 13:04Speaker 1: How do I make up for all this lost time?
- 13:06Speaker 1: I don't know where to go. Just focus on making
- 13:09Speaker 1: the next right choice, doing the next right thing for you,
- 13:13Speaker 1: and I'll tell you it feeds that confident.
- 13:16Speaker 3: It feeds the confidence. All the little steps end up
- 13:20Speaker 3: still making you, giving you that forward progress. Having such
- 13:23Speaker 3: a massive following both across TikTok and YouTube. You talked
- 13:27Speaker 3: about really making this pivot for yourself about three years ago,
- 13:32Speaker 3: and that is both a little bit of time and
- 13:35Speaker 3: a lot of time. Talk to me about how it
- 13:38Speaker 3: feels now with the progress that you've made over the
- 13:43Speaker 3: past three years in this career that you've chosen.
- 13:46Speaker 1: Oh yeah. I mean, like I said, when influencer was
- 13:51Speaker 1: being thrown around, I feel the stigma behind it. I
- 13:54Speaker 1: didn't like it. I didn't take pride in it. So
- 13:57Speaker 1: I had my foot in it and then I had
- 13:59Speaker 1: my other foot out of it. I was a teacher
- 14:01Speaker 1: and a coach, and I thought that was something that
- 14:03Speaker 1: I could take pride in and really stand firmly on.
- 14:09Speaker 1: So the term influencer, I didn't like it. However, I
- 14:15Speaker 1: did do some content. I had a little bit of
- 14:17Speaker 1: a following. I would be a substitute teacher and these
- 14:19Speaker 1: kids would be like Jenna Bandy twenty one. I'm like, no,
- 14:22Speaker 1: it's miss Bandy or it's coach, you know what I mean.
- 14:25Speaker 1: So it was a little bit weird and I think
- 14:28Speaker 1: what it was for me was I started to surround
- 14:31Speaker 1: myself with other content creators who've been doing this a
- 14:34Speaker 1: lot longer than me. And this guy I pay homage
- 14:38Speaker 1: to him, Josh Horton. He had seventeen Guinness World records
- 14:42Speaker 1: when I met him, and he just moved into my
- 14:44Speaker 1: hometown in Thousand Oaks and we had a mutual friend
- 14:47Speaker 1: and he was like, hey, I would love to have
- 14:49Speaker 1: you on my channel. We do a lot of basketball stuff,
- 14:51Speaker 1: trick shots, sporting challenges like yeah, sure I will. And
- 14:56Speaker 1: I had a lot of fun and soon you see
- 14:58Speaker 1: his followers is subscribe. I start talking about when Jenna
- 15:02Speaker 1: gonna get a channel. We love Jenna, bring Jenna back
- 15:05Speaker 1: Gone and he's like, Jennah, you really need to do this.
- 15:07Speaker 1: People love you. You have a thing, you have it
- 15:11Speaker 1: and I was like God influencer YouTuber kind of lame
- 15:15Speaker 1: right and shortly after that like he we all got
- 15:21Speaker 1: Guinness World records. He saw I made a throw. I
- 15:25Speaker 1: made a football throw into the basket and we were
- 15:28Speaker 1: doing a video for his channel and he was like,
- 15:30Speaker 1: you know what, Jenna, that might be a gninnifoild record
- 15:32Speaker 1: because already has it in his mind. To think that way,
- 15:35Speaker 1: like this could be ananifold record. Let's look it up.
- 15:37Speaker 1: No one has set this Gennithral record for farthest football
- 15:40Speaker 1: throw into a target by a female. So he had
- 15:43Speaker 1: the plug with the Guinness World Record adjudicators, the officiators,
- 15:47Speaker 1: and we all rented out some space a certain day
- 15:50Speaker 1: and time, and we all had Guinness World records to
- 15:52Speaker 1: set and we all achieved them. And when I got that,
- 15:54Speaker 1: I was like, that's a cool little flex. So I
- 15:56Speaker 1: put it on my Instagram, my YouTube and it was
- 16:00Speaker 1: really cool and I was like, okay, like this is
- 16:02Speaker 1: actually kind of something I could do. And then it
- 16:06Speaker 1: really wasn't until I got the opportunity in twenty twenty
- 16:11Speaker 1: one by House of Highlights to come on their showdown.
- 16:15Speaker 1: They were having a showdown challenge of Knockout Basketball and
- 16:19Speaker 1: it's you know, two balls, you're in a line. If
- 16:22Speaker 1: you make it before the person in front of you
- 16:24Speaker 1: makes it, they're out. You know, like that game, the
- 16:27Speaker 1: Playground game. And I played that all my life, and
- 16:30Speaker 1: they gave us the opportunity. I was the only girl,
- 16:33Speaker 1: and I was one of eight people, and I was
- 16:35Speaker 1: amongst other big YouTubers. I felt like why am I here.
- 16:39Speaker 1: I'm just I'm an odd ball. I'm just a little
- 16:41Speaker 1: baby in this journey of being an influencer, right, but hey,
- 16:46Speaker 1: I'm gonna make the most of it. And I freaking won.
- 16:50Speaker 1: I beat all the guys. I had all my lives left.
- 16:53Speaker 1: We all had three lives. You could bump the ball. Yeah,
- 16:57Speaker 1: I had the most like uh sperience basketball wise, but
- 17:02Speaker 1: it was from the free throw line and you had
- 17:04Speaker 1: three lives and you could bump the ball. And we
- 17:06Speaker 1: had ample amount of time to prepare, and I prepared
- 17:10Speaker 1: and I made eighteen out of twenty shots. So even
- 17:15Speaker 1: when I missed, you couldn't really bump my ball. I
- 17:17Speaker 1: got it quick and I put it back up and
- 17:18Speaker 1: I'm and I won one hundred K. I'm getting tons
- 17:21Speaker 1: of followers that night. I'm like, this is for me.
- 17:25Speaker 1: I have to capitalize on this platform. I would be
- 17:28Speaker 1: stupid to do it. To not do it. I am young. Now,
- 17:32Speaker 1: I could always go back to coaching. I can always
- 17:34Speaker 1: go back to teaching. I'm doing I'm doubling down.
- 17:36Speaker 3: Yeah, And I love like the excitement that builds in
- 17:39Speaker 3: your voice as you tell that story, and you like
- 17:41Speaker 3: reflect back on that because What a beautiful opportunity that
- 17:45Speaker 3: it was right, like this really fun moment for you
- 17:49Speaker 3: to be like, actually, I really like doing this, enabling you.
- 17:53Speaker 2: To then care a lot less about whatever the stigma
- 17:57Speaker 2: was that you associated with the an influencer being a
- 18:01Speaker 2: content creator.
- 18:03Speaker 1: Exactly because people thought it was kind of a gimmick.
- 18:05Speaker 1: If you hear a woman say I'm an influencer, the
- 18:09Speaker 1: stigma automatically is, oh, she's probably showing off her body,
- 18:14Speaker 1: kind of being like gimmicky or cheap, and like, that
- 18:18Speaker 1: wasn't me at all. I'm a tomboy like at heart.
- 18:23Speaker 1: I grew up with a big brother that never let
- 18:25Speaker 1: me win in anything, talking trash to me, you know.
- 18:29Speaker 1: So when I finally did win, I earned that. So
- 18:32Speaker 1: that has given me that competitive edge, and I've that's
- 18:36Speaker 1: just who I am. I'm very authentic to being a tomboy.
- 18:39Speaker 1: So I enjoyed this beating up on my guys. That
- 18:41Speaker 1: second nature to me.
- 18:43Speaker 3: Can we go back to the Guinness World Record for
- 18:45Speaker 3: a moment though, Yeah, for that they have to come right, yes.
- 18:50Speaker 1: And adjudicator, Yeah, we had we had the measuring tape.
- 18:54Speaker 1: It was ninety feet, so thirty yards had to throw
- 18:58Speaker 1: with an NFL sized and I couldn't bank it in.
- 19:02Speaker 1: It had to go straight in and take a mind
- 19:05Speaker 1: Like I could throw an NFL fall probably forty forty
- 19:08Speaker 1: five yards, maybe fifty, but it was ten feet up
- 19:12Speaker 1: in the air. So it's also like you really got
- 19:15Speaker 1: to get under it, you know. And let me tell you,
- 19:19Speaker 1: everyone else got their gonna throw out world records before me.
- 19:22Speaker 1: So I'm like, I can't be the only one leaving
- 19:24Speaker 1: this gym without again as world record. Heck no, you
- 19:27Speaker 1: know what I mean, Like, are we all gonna go
- 19:29Speaker 1: to dinner and celebrate, But I'm the only one that
- 19:31Speaker 1: really is being a little like upset. You know, I can't.
- 19:35Speaker 1: I can't be the one. I can't be the bad egg.
- 19:38Speaker 2: You can't do it. Well, you didn't have to worry
- 19:39Speaker 2: about that because you succeeded. Yeah, you know.
- 19:43Speaker 3: And again going back to just like your charisma and
- 19:46Speaker 3: your level of energy, I would imagine that you you
- 19:51Speaker 3: garner that excitement you're all in, but at the end
- 19:54Speaker 3: of the day, like you're putting out content for everyone
- 19:57Speaker 3: to see, So are you able to hold onto that
- 20:00Speaker 3: excitement when other people start having an opinion on what
- 20:04Speaker 3: it is that you're doing oh man.
- 20:06Speaker 1: I mean that's also something that comes apart of like
- 20:09Speaker 1: being so public and on social media, you know, comments,
- 20:13Speaker 1: you know, they say, don't read the comments. I read them.
- 20:15Speaker 2: I do not all of them, you know.
- 20:18Speaker 1: And there will be troths, there will be haters, and
- 20:22Speaker 1: you know the saying if if you have haters, that
- 20:24Speaker 1: means you're doing something right, you know. And kind of
- 20:26Speaker 1: all my life, I have had people jealous or or
- 20:33Speaker 1: just feel like they're slided and should be in the
- 20:36Speaker 1: position that I'm in or you know. And the thing
- 20:39Speaker 1: is is like you just carry on. You can't please everybody.
- 20:44Speaker 1: Sometimes when you do well or not well, like there's
- 20:46Speaker 1: always going to be an opinion. So I think the
- 20:49Speaker 1: excitement is still alive inside me, and I try to
- 20:53Speaker 1: stay humble, but at the same time, I'll talk my talk,
- 20:56Speaker 1: you know, and I think it's deserving because that worked hard.
- 21:01Speaker 1: I prepared like I was in the gym. I went
- 21:05Speaker 1: to my old school that I coached that I still
- 21:07Speaker 1: had the keys there, you know, and I got on
- 21:09Speaker 1: the shooting gun, the shooting machine, and I was shooting
- 21:12Speaker 1: free throw after free throw, and I was even thinking
- 21:14Speaker 1: about things like, okay, well if someone's in front of me.
- 21:17Speaker 1: I'm actually not going to be right at the free
- 21:18Speaker 1: throw line. I'm going to be about a foot and
- 21:20Speaker 1: a half two feet back. So I practiced not just
- 21:23Speaker 1: from the freeth line. I practiced from two feedback. I
- 21:25Speaker 1: practiced to the right of them. I practiced to the
- 21:28Speaker 1: left of them. I'm preparing for all things, and they're
- 21:31Speaker 1: calling me a try hard or oh she she doesn't
- 21:34Speaker 1: deserve to be there because she she's played college ball.
- 21:38Speaker 1: But I prepared. You could have prepared too. It's first
- 21:41Speaker 1: the free throw.
- 21:42Speaker 3: Line, yeah, you know, and that's and that's only like
- 21:46Speaker 3: one of these, let's say opportunities, right because you've had
- 21:50Speaker 3: so many now at this point, that was just kind
- 21:53Speaker 3: of one of the let's call it the first or
- 21:56Speaker 3: the catapulting moments. And yes, as you can haue you on,
- 22:01Speaker 3: you talked about, you know, preparing for that one in
- 22:03Speaker 3: terms of training. But what does quote unquote training look
- 22:06Speaker 3: like for you these days?
- 22:08Speaker 1: Yeah? So you know what, like right now, I don't
- 22:12Speaker 1: really go and play pick up basketball anymore like I
- 22:15Speaker 1: used to. If I'm gonna play basketball, I'm it's mainly
- 22:19Speaker 1: for an event or I'm turning that camera on and
- 22:23Speaker 1: it's it's very rarely ever where I'm just playing for
- 22:25Speaker 1: fun anymore, because I am doing stuff very often. I
- 22:31Speaker 1: love playing pickleball. I so like that's in my my
- 22:35Speaker 1: weekly schedule, Like I'll go and I'll play pickleball. I
- 22:39Speaker 1: wait train, i will get shots up, I'll get content,
- 22:43Speaker 1: you know, for basketball. But hardly ever really playing fives
- 22:47Speaker 1: just for fun. I always got something going on football,
- 22:52Speaker 1: you know. And so I'm just a lot of it
- 22:56Speaker 1: has to do with recovery and and making I'm sure
- 23:00Speaker 1: that my body's feeling good because I'm thirty years old
- 23:02Speaker 1: now and I feel like, oh I got to keep
- 23:07Speaker 1: up with these young guns, you know, and and it's
- 23:09Speaker 1: a matter of staying young, staying healthy so I could
- 23:12Speaker 1: continue to do this.
- 23:14Speaker 3: I probably should have had that mindset at thirty. Honestly
- 23:17Speaker 3: now I'm like, I'm only I've only got a few
- 23:19Speaker 3: years on you. But like if I at thirty was like, man,
- 23:22Speaker 3: really gotta protect these bones, then maybe I wouldn't be
- 23:26Speaker 3: hobbling around like I already am.
- 23:28Speaker 1: The multivitamin, the you know, everything, you got it, the creams, everything.
- 23:33Speaker 3: It's all it's all in the rotation, don know, don't worry.
- 23:36Speaker 3: So okay, But going back though to kind of picking
- 23:40Speaker 3: this up during the pandemic, bring us into what Jenna
- 23:46Speaker 3: Bandy is doing like top and twenty twenty right before
- 23:52Speaker 3: everything shuts down?
- 23:55Speaker 1: Wow, what I was doing before that? I was trying
- 23:58Speaker 1: to really figure out what do I see the rest
- 24:02Speaker 1: of my life as? And I really felt passionate about
- 24:05Speaker 1: coaching and about teaching. I saw my summers off and
- 24:10Speaker 1: enjoying that with my with my future husband and family
- 24:14Speaker 1: and kids. You know, I saw that it was very
- 24:17Speaker 1: rewarding to teach and coach and to see that light
- 24:20Speaker 1: bulb turn on, you know, but it is a grind.
- 24:23Speaker 1: And I was. I was a head coach at twenty
- 24:27Speaker 1: four years old, and you know, I look younger than
- 24:31Speaker 1: I am, so and I felt like any disagreement to
- 24:34Speaker 1: playing time or just my coaching concepts, it was an
- 24:37Speaker 1: attack and a threat to my job security. It was
- 24:41Speaker 1: very hard in the in the areas I was coaching.
- 24:44Speaker 1: I was coaching at Calabasas High School, Calabasas right, A
- 24:49Speaker 1: lot of big name people there, you know, privileged, and
- 24:53Speaker 1: I was trying to teach them things like hard work
- 24:56Speaker 1: and accountability and hey, you might not be going to
- 24:59Speaker 1: college to play basket but you are going to be
- 25:01Speaker 1: in college and living on your own, and mom and
- 25:04Speaker 1: dad won't be there to hold your hand all the time.
- 25:06Speaker 1: So accountability communication talking to someone an adult that's older
- 25:10Speaker 1: than you about something that you might have an issue
- 25:12Speaker 1: about that you can't always have mom and dad, So
- 25:14Speaker 1: it's very tough. I felt like I was being attacked
- 25:19Speaker 1: and I just for things that are so I had
- 25:22Speaker 1: such great intentions for and I'm like, you know what,
- 25:24Speaker 1: I might be too young right now and look a
- 25:27Speaker 1: certain way right now to be fully respected in this field.
- 25:31Speaker 1: So I was like, maybe I got to go to college.
- 25:34Speaker 1: So I was right before the pandemic, I was a
- 25:38Speaker 1: junior college assistant coach, and that really fit way better
- 25:42Speaker 1: for me. I didn't have to target on my back
- 25:44Speaker 1: as the head coach. I was an assistant. So I
- 25:46Speaker 1: was like, I kind of could be the kids homies,
- 25:49Speaker 1: you know, and I could I could be there and
- 25:53Speaker 1: and not have all the responsibility that I had as
- 25:55Speaker 1: a head coach managing scheduling all of it. You know,
- 25:59Speaker 1: it fit me better. But like I said, like the
- 26:03Speaker 1: pandemic hit, I had this opportunity and I doubled down
- 26:07Speaker 1: on it, and it kind of was like, Okay, well,
- 26:09Speaker 1: I'll do it. I didn't really think anything would come
- 26:11Speaker 1: of it. And six months later, six months later, they
- 26:14Speaker 1: invite me to another one, another showdown for one hundred k,
- 26:17Speaker 1: and I was one of twelve people. I was one
- 26:22Speaker 1: of two girls. So it was ten guys and two
- 26:25Speaker 1: girls and I was one of the girls. And it
- 26:27Speaker 1: was for one hundred k. Is for go karting, and
- 26:30Speaker 1: I took. I took a page out of my book
- 26:31Speaker 1: from the other one. I'm like, what did I do
- 26:33Speaker 1: to win this one? Well, I prepared, So what did
- 26:36Speaker 1: I do for this one? I went to the actual
- 26:38Speaker 1: go karting site. I went two weekends in a row.
- 26:41Speaker 1: My sister lived thirty minutes away. It was an anaheum.
- 26:44Speaker 1: My sister lived thirty minutes away. And I practiced Friday
- 26:46Speaker 1: Saturday Sunday. And then the week went by, and then
- 26:48Speaker 1: again I practiced Friday Saturday Sunday. I raced four races
- 26:51Speaker 1: a day, so four times six, I raced twenty four races.
- 26:57Speaker 1: I got to learn the go kart, I got to
- 26:59Speaker 1: learn the trap, and I asked questions. So then when
- 27:02Speaker 1: I go to the actual event, I had the fastest
- 27:07Speaker 1: lap time of everybody, so I got the first grid
- 27:10Speaker 1: spot and then I defended my line and I freaking
- 27:13Speaker 1: won again. I won another one hundred k against all
- 27:17Speaker 1: the guys, and here I go. I won two hundred
- 27:20Speaker 1: k and one year. I'm like, guys, can you give
- 27:22Speaker 1: me the check in the following year? Like taxes man?
- 27:26Speaker 1: But the thing is is that I prepared and they
- 27:30Speaker 1: still called me out as a tryhard or someone who
- 27:33Speaker 1: got a coach. Just give me the credit that I deserve.
- 27:37Speaker 1: I prepared.
- 27:38Speaker 3: When you started getting more and more of a following,
- 27:42Speaker 3: did you recognize that you have this opportunity, through this
- 27:46Speaker 3: new line of work to inspire the next generation of women.
- 27:50Speaker 1: Yes, and that's exactly like what the main thing has
- 27:54Speaker 1: always been. You know, we're called influencers. However, what is
- 28:01Speaker 1: the direct influence. I might have an indirect influence. I'm impressive,
- 28:06Speaker 1: I look cute. You know I can do some pretty
- 28:09Speaker 1: cool stuff, right, But what am I directly influencing? So
- 28:12Speaker 1: I always knew that I wanted to come out with
- 28:14Speaker 1: a brand, and a lot of influencers have their brand
- 28:17Speaker 1: named after themselves, and I've been told I should do
- 28:21Speaker 1: the bandy brand. It kind of seems like a no brainer, right,
- 28:25Speaker 1: But I was like, I don't want it to be
- 28:27Speaker 1: about me, Like, who's really gonna wear Dranda Bandy on there?
- 28:30Speaker 1: You know what I mean. I wanted to be something
- 28:31Speaker 1: that they can embody themselves. So that's why I came
- 28:34Speaker 1: up a game changer and it's her at the end,
- 28:37Speaker 1: like I said, because that's something that even dads can
- 28:41Speaker 1: wear because they have daughters that they support, or even
- 28:44Speaker 1: if you're not a dad but you're a man. I
- 28:46Speaker 1: actually was blown away by the support that I got
- 28:48Speaker 1: by by men because they're like, well, it's a female
- 28:51Speaker 1: empowerment brand. Of course I'm going to support it because
- 28:54Speaker 1: I wasn't sure if they would wear something that says
- 28:56Speaker 1: her on it. But I got a lot of sport
- 29:00Speaker 1: and I was like, okay, this is reinforcing everything.
- 29:06Speaker 2: Or you started game change her.
- 29:08Speaker 3: Did you feel like the influence that you had that
- 29:13Speaker 3: you were starting to cultivate was in line with what
- 29:17Speaker 3: you wanted to create.
- 29:19Speaker 1: Yes, Like I definitely had a lot of like girls
- 29:23Speaker 1: dming me, messaging me and telling telling me how much
- 29:27Speaker 1: like I inspire them, and and you know, but I
- 29:30Speaker 1: have the numbers show like I have an overwhelming amount
- 29:34Speaker 1: of a male following compared to female following. And I
- 29:38Speaker 1: think it also goes from like girls aren't always all
- 29:43Speaker 1: that supportive of other girls. It's a certain thing you
- 29:45Speaker 1: know that goes on, Oh, am, I am I really
- 29:48Speaker 1: going to support her? Am I just jealous of her?
- 29:49Speaker 1: It's it's tough, but I will recall there was a
- 29:52Speaker 1: moment I was in New York and I had a
- 29:56Speaker 1: whole activation with this brand, and and I was strangers
- 30:01Speaker 1: at west Worth in the cage. It was like one
- 30:03Speaker 1: of the most like famous street ball courts, and I
- 30:08Speaker 1: was playing one on one. If you beat me, you
- 30:11Speaker 1: get to win tickets to Madison Square Garden for the
- 30:14Speaker 1: for the college games and for the Knicks versus Bucks game.
- 30:17Speaker 1: Like this is huge, right, And I know I look deceiving,
- 30:21Speaker 1: and that's part of it, Like I look like I
- 30:23Speaker 1: could be you know, I'm blonde hair, you know. But
- 30:26Speaker 1: then I'm bawling up right. So a bunch of guys
- 30:29Speaker 1: came to play me. And there was this little girl
- 30:31Speaker 1: that came and her name was Sophia, and she was
- 30:34Speaker 1: only five years old and she came up to me
- 30:37Speaker 1: with her dad, and I was like, Hi, what's your name.
- 30:41Speaker 1: She's like, I'm Sophia, and I was like, I'm Jen.
- 30:44Speaker 1: I know who you are. I watched all your videos
- 30:47Speaker 1: and she was the only girl that was there all
- 30:50Speaker 1: day watching me. Had her ball with her and I
- 30:53Speaker 1: let her play and we played. But since that day
- 30:56Speaker 1: she's been the wallpaper on the back of my phone. Still.
- 31:00Speaker 1: If I wasn't doing this voice, and I'm not, I'll
- 31:02Speaker 1: show you right now. But little Sophia, she made me
- 31:06Speaker 1: realize that I have a bigger voice than I thought
- 31:10Speaker 1: I did. And that was in that was in twenty
- 31:13Speaker 1: twenty one, I believe, and it really made me realize
- 31:17Speaker 1: I got to put on for the women, and I
- 31:19Speaker 1: got to have a brand that is for the women.
- 31:22Speaker 1: You know, not about me, but it's for the women.
- 31:24Speaker 1: It's for girls in sports and to show women you
- 31:27Speaker 1: could do both. You can look cute and you could ball,
- 31:31Speaker 1: you know, and you could be fearless and be true
- 31:34Speaker 1: to who you are and just do all fits.
- 31:41Speaker 3: Taking a break from today's episode to give some love
- 31:44Speaker 3: to the sponsors that make this content possible. First up,

- 34:58Speaker 3: annoys me.
- 35:00Speaker 2: And I go to like any video of.
- 35:03Speaker 3: A female athlete and there are, without a doubt, men
- 35:07Speaker 3: in the comments commenting about her appearance.
- 35:12Speaker 2: How do you navigate that with what you do?
- 35:15Speaker 1: Yeah? You see, this is the thing social media. It's
- 35:19Speaker 1: still about entertainment. And I understand that, Like there's a
- 35:26Speaker 1: few things that you should achieve when you're on social media.
- 35:29Speaker 1: It should be inspiring, educational, or informative. And I know
- 35:37Speaker 1: that I have a certain look and I could just
- 35:41Speaker 1: be all about my look. I'm tasteful with it, you know,
- 35:45Speaker 1: and I'll show my assets, but I'm also showing my talent.
- 35:49Speaker 1: I am still a very feminine girl, and I do
- 35:52Speaker 1: look a certain way, but I am very talented and
- 35:55Speaker 1: sporty and athletic.
- 35:57Speaker 2: And athletic and athletic.
- 35:59Speaker 3: Yeah, And you know, I love that story that you
- 36:01Speaker 3: shared also about Sofia, because I think that it brings
- 36:04Speaker 3: us back to your why right and the goal again
- 36:09Speaker 3: to inspire the next generation of athletes. When you reflect
- 36:13Speaker 3: on the women that motivated you to lace up from
- 36:18Speaker 3: the get go, who comes to mind?
- 36:21Speaker 1: Honestly, I just I have to say my mom. And
- 36:24Speaker 1: it's not necessarily from an athletic standpoint, it's more of
- 36:28Speaker 1: just just her character and her just grit. I would say,
- 36:36Speaker 1: you know, my mom is Italian from New Jersey, smoker,
- 36:41Speaker 1: has the rasp and her voice deep, like came to
- 36:44Speaker 1: every single one of my games. It's the same with
- 36:46Speaker 1: my dad. But you heard my mom and you knew
- 36:49Speaker 1: that was my mom because she's the only blonde, I'm
- 36:50Speaker 1: the only bond on the court, you know, like, and
- 36:53Speaker 1: she just I just say, she just inspired me to
- 36:57Speaker 1: be independent and strong and to be authentic to who
- 37:00Speaker 1: I am, you know, and just stand firm in what
- 37:03Speaker 1: you believe in and what you want to do. So
- 37:06Speaker 1: my mom and I would say my big brother, like
- 37:10Speaker 1: I said, he never let me win in anything. I
- 37:13Speaker 1: have a twin brother as well. But my twin brother,
- 37:16Speaker 1: my parents say that I saw all the athleticism in
- 37:18Speaker 1: the womb because Jace is not coordinated whatsoever. My twin brother,
- 37:22Speaker 1: he's a Spanish teacher and just very yeah, very passionate
- 37:26Speaker 1: about that. But I I'm athletic and jet My big
- 37:30Speaker 1: bro just would you know, like I said, he beat
- 37:32Speaker 1: up on me and and he he was in the
- 37:35Speaker 1: MLB Major League Baseball player, professional baseball player for years
- 37:38Speaker 1: he retired now and you know, just the tunnel vision
- 37:42Speaker 1: and his his focus. I always looked up.
- 37:44Speaker 3: To, Oh my god, I can like hear your mom's
- 37:47Speaker 3: voice in the back of my head now, Like being
- 37:50Speaker 3: that standout on the side of the court. To be
- 37:53Speaker 3: able to reflect and be like, yo, my mom was it.
- 37:56Speaker 3: That's like such an awesome thing.
- 37:58Speaker 1: Yeah, And you know, I mean, of course, there's there's
- 38:01Speaker 1: women that I've looked up to, Like I definitely looked
- 38:04Speaker 1: up to Jenny Finch and softball, like I love, I
- 38:07Speaker 1: felt like I kind of looked like her, you know,
- 38:09Speaker 1: I had her glove and softball Lisa Leslie being the
- 38:13Speaker 1: first woman a dunk. And then also I have to
- 38:16Speaker 1: say the movie Love in basketball, like I remember particularly
- 38:21Speaker 1: the movie Monica, you know, she she made a basket
- 38:26Speaker 1: and kind of looked down at her defender like kind
- 38:29Speaker 1: of talking trash. And she was like, why do I
- 38:32Speaker 1: get in trouble for talking trash? Because because I'm a female.
- 38:36Speaker 1: But if a guy does it, he gets a pat
- 38:38Speaker 1: on the back, you know. And it's kind of very
- 38:41Speaker 1: relevant to today and what's going on today with Angel
- 38:43Speaker 1: Reifs and Caitlin Clark, and even for me being a creator.
- 38:47Speaker 1: As a content creator, I was just in this league
- 38:50Speaker 1: two on two Creator League for fifty k, and I
- 38:54Speaker 1: was talking my talk we're entertainers as well. So I'm
- 38:57Speaker 1: shooting it and I'm going like this, and I'm I'm
- 39:00Speaker 1: saying you're too little. And I feel like a lot
- 39:03Speaker 1: of the time I have been criticized because I'm a
- 39:06Speaker 1: female doing it or because I'm white and doing it.
- 39:08Speaker 1: I even had someone in my comments because we won.
- 39:11Speaker 1: I won another fifty k and in my thing, I'm
- 39:15Speaker 1: showing that I'm doing this stuff. And I said in
- 39:18Speaker 1: my caption, I said, do you think females should be
- 39:20Speaker 1: criticized for talking trash or celebrating just because we're females.
- 39:24Speaker 1: And I remember one comment in particular, they said, no,
- 39:27Speaker 1: but just be more lady like. What does that even mean?
- 39:31Speaker 1: Be more lady like about it?
- 39:32Speaker 3: Oh my god, that stuff bothers me so much. It
- 39:35Speaker 3: bothers me so much. So tell us then, now that
- 39:38Speaker 3: you know you're three years into creating this content, where
- 39:42Speaker 3: do you see yourself going from here?
- 39:44Speaker 1: For a little bit, at the beginning of this year,
- 39:45Speaker 1: I remember having like my yearly meeting with my manager Alex,
- 39:50Speaker 1: and it kind of came to me in a sense
- 39:52Speaker 1: where I felt I've been looking at content creation, being
- 39:55Speaker 1: a social media influencer as a stepping stone into my
- 40:00Speaker 1: more adult job, into my more conventional job, which is
- 40:05Speaker 1: maybe being a sideline sports reporter or sports host. And
- 40:08Speaker 1: I did get my feet wet in that at the
- 40:11Speaker 1: end of the year last year August through about middle
- 40:14Speaker 1: of February of this year, and I was learning things.
- 40:17Speaker 1: I was on set in a studio, reading from a prompter,
- 40:22Speaker 1: having to memorize things, and it was a really great
- 40:24Speaker 1: learning experience. It is a muscle that I had the
- 40:26Speaker 1: flex that I wasn't used to and through that I
- 40:29Speaker 1: was like, you know what, I actually don't enjoy this
- 40:31Speaker 1: as much as I thought I would. And I'm really
- 40:34Speaker 1: glad I got that experience because it made me realize,
- 40:37Speaker 1: like being a content creator, it's not a stepping stone.
- 40:41Speaker 1: I'm going to continue to double down on what I'm
- 40:44Speaker 1: doing now. So right now, I used to edit all
- 40:48Speaker 1: of my stuff, long form, short form everything. Now I
- 40:52Speaker 1: don't edit my long form videos. I have a videographer.
- 40:55Speaker 1: So now when you say, like, well, what's next for you,
- 40:57Speaker 1: it's more just doubling down on what I'm already doing,
- 41:00Speaker 1: getting a videographer, getting an editor, maybe having multiple I
- 41:03Speaker 1: do have multiple, continuing to just bring people on my team,
- 41:07Speaker 1: and continuing what's the next what's the next video idea,
- 41:11Speaker 1: What's the next thing I could do to level up?
- 41:13Speaker 1: You know, like I've been on America, It's got talent.
- 41:16Speaker 1: I've done performances at the Clippers NBA basketball game to
- 41:20Speaker 1: try to beat my Guinness World Record. Like if I
- 41:22Speaker 1: could beat my Guinness World Record, you know, just leveling up,
- 41:25Speaker 1: and that's really where it is. I'm just doubling down
- 41:28Speaker 1: on what I'm already doing. That's what's next for me,
- 41:30Speaker 1: and I feel like eventually there will be some type
- 41:34Speaker 1: of hybrid maybe of content creator and like maybe the
- 41:39Speaker 1: conventional world of being a sports hoster, or so maybe
- 41:41Speaker 1: I create my own show. Maybe even right now it's
- 41:44Speaker 1: doubling down even more on my brand, Game Changer, collabing
- 41:48Speaker 1: with the WNBA, collabing with cool big brands.
- 41:51Speaker 3: And when you say all of this, the possibility is
- 41:56Speaker 3: exciting and it's contagious. And I really love that realization
- 41:59Speaker 3: that you had going through that experience of doing more
- 42:03Speaker 3: of the conventional reporting that you thought maybe that you
- 42:06Speaker 3: would want to do when you were a bit younger,
- 42:09Speaker 3: and having that takeaway that's like, you know what, I'm
- 42:12Speaker 3: glad I did it, but it's not it doesn't feel
- 42:15Speaker 3: like it's for me. I think oftentimes we have a
- 42:18Speaker 3: hard time letting go of the thing that we were
- 42:21Speaker 3: so convinced was meant to be our path.
- 42:23Speaker 2: Yeah, did you feel that way?
- 42:25Speaker 1: Yes? And I would. I would be told, oh, you
- 42:29Speaker 1: look like Aaron Andrews. You could totally do what she does,
- 42:33Speaker 1: And that kind of gave me the idea to do
- 42:36Speaker 1: communications and major in that in college. I didn't really know,
- 42:39Speaker 1: but I kind of had people telling me that's what
- 42:42Speaker 1: you should do. And I'm like, yeah, I could do that,
- 42:44Speaker 1: I know sports, And so, like you said, experiencing it
- 42:49Speaker 1: living it, I realized it's really not something that I
- 42:53Speaker 1: loved as much as I do with my content creation.
- 42:56Speaker 3: Yeah, but it is really empowering to say, hey, I'm
- 43:01Speaker 3: going to stand on my own two feet and make
- 43:03Speaker 3: my own thing and then the rest, you know, it's
- 43:07Speaker 3: up to possibility.
- 43:08Speaker 1: Yeah. And if you think about it, like where you
- 43:11Speaker 1: thought your life was gonna go years ago, it's definitely
- 43:14Speaker 1: probably not where it is. And I just that's been
- 43:17Speaker 1: my life. It's I've had freak accidents, I've had things
- 43:21Speaker 1: that I just get opportunities for and I capitalize on them.
- 43:24Speaker 1: And I'm just going to continue to stay true to
- 43:27Speaker 1: living each day and making the next right thing, doing
- 43:31Speaker 1: the next right thing for me.
- 43:33Speaker 2: Yeah. Yeah, Now you travel a lot. I'm with you
- 43:37Speaker 2: on that.
- 43:38Speaker 3: Talk to me a little bit about how Jenna takes
- 43:41Speaker 3: care of Jenna when she is constantly on the move.
- 43:45Speaker 1: Oh my goodness, I gotta get my coffee, that's for sure.
- 43:50Speaker 2: The only thing that I do for self care is Cathine.
- 43:52Speaker 1: You know, you know, it's still it's true to what
- 43:58Speaker 1: I do. Even when I am home. I call my
- 44:00Speaker 1: mom every day, talk to my mama. Gotta get gotta
- 44:04Speaker 1: get that energy in.
- 44:05Speaker 3: Me, you know.
- 44:07Speaker 1: And it's it's really helpful to just stay on schedule.
- 44:11Speaker 1: I feel a really bad feeling in my gut when
- 44:14Speaker 1: I'm late to things. I don't like that, you know,
- 44:17Speaker 1: So just just making sure that I'm being considerate of others.
- 44:20Speaker 1: And and you know, I have this this tushy cushy
- 44:24Speaker 1: that I have that with me when I travel, and
- 44:27Speaker 1: I sit on it in the planes because I have
- 44:30Speaker 1: this little issue with my pariformis if I sit for
- 44:33Speaker 1: too long, I am in pain. I'm in absolute pain,
- 44:36Speaker 1: and especially if I'm active, and then I have to
- 44:40Speaker 1: be on that plane. Oh my god. So that's one
- 44:42Speaker 1: thing like I gotta grab my tushy.
- 44:44Speaker 3: Cushiy unexpected components of the self care routine.
- 44:47Speaker 1: And then another must have is when I'm traveling, I
- 44:51Speaker 1: gotta bring my speaker with me. I gotta have my
- 44:54Speaker 1: music going on when I'm getting dressed, when I'm when
- 44:56Speaker 1: I'm just in the hotel chillin. So those are like
- 45:00Speaker 1: my tushy cushy and my speaker and my coffee and
- 45:04Speaker 1: mama Bear.
- 45:05Speaker 3: I love that your self care involves aspects that some
- 45:08Speaker 3: individuals may not think to be proactive about. For instance,
- 45:12Speaker 3: calling your mom because you know that her energy fills
- 45:14Speaker 3: up your cop thinking about how you can take care
- 45:17Speaker 3: of your body in situations that maybe other people wouldn't
- 45:20Speaker 3: think about. Some others may be like, oh fuck, I'm
- 45:23Speaker 3: gonna be stuck on this plane for twelve hours, right,
- 45:25Speaker 3: But you're like, no, how can I make the best
- 45:27Speaker 3: of this situation? And that's just a testament to the
- 45:32Speaker 3: mindset that you have garnered, overcoming things that maybe didn't
- 45:36Speaker 3: go your way leading up to this point. You have
- 45:39Speaker 3: learned to truly do the best you can with what
- 45:42Speaker 3: you have. How does that make you feel when I
- 45:45Speaker 3: say that to you.
- 45:46Speaker 1: Wow, I mean it makes me feel pretty special, and
- 45:50Speaker 1: it makes me feel like I have done what I
- 45:52Speaker 1: can and because I know people would die to be
- 45:58Speaker 1: in the position that I am. I remember for a
- 46:00Speaker 1: little bit I was like, gosh, YouTube is just I
- 46:03Speaker 1: don't really want to do YouTube anymore. I'm getting enough
- 46:05Speaker 1: brand deals for short form content with TikTok and Instagram.
- 46:09Speaker 1: I just want to do that. It's not as much work.
- 46:11Speaker 1: I could easily edit it on my phone, but I
- 46:15Speaker 1: had like two hundred thousand on YouTube and I just
- 46:20Speaker 1: was letting it sit there. So it's like, no anyone
- 46:24Speaker 1: would kill the hab my platform. So I've been capitalizing.
- 46:26Speaker 1: I've been making sure that I'm posting every day on
- 46:29Speaker 1: YouTube shorts and I'm posting a long form every week,
- 46:31Speaker 1: you know. So I just sometimes, you know, I do
- 46:34Speaker 1: need to get a little bit of a kick in
- 46:37Speaker 1: the butt in the reminder, you know, like like if
- 46:40Speaker 1: I'm getting irritated with a brand and I have a
- 46:43Speaker 1: deliverable that I have to meet and they come back
- 46:45Speaker 1: with feedback and I'm like, crap, I gotta to edit
- 46:46Speaker 1: more or I have to redo this voiceover or whatever.
- 46:50Speaker 1: I have to remind myself, Jenna, chill, stop being so spoiled,
- 46:55Speaker 1: because it's like you get to make videos for you
- 46:57Speaker 1: get to be a tomboy for a living. Already be
- 47:00Speaker 1: a tomboy if you weren't doing this now you're just
- 47:02Speaker 1: getting paid for it. So I have to remind myself
- 47:06Speaker 1: just like like you are blessed, Yeah you are. My
- 47:12Speaker 1: cup is overflowing, like you said, just being grounded with
- 47:15Speaker 1: those calls with Mama Bear and remembering where I came
- 47:18Speaker 1: from and how I was raised and those morals.
- 47:20Speaker 2: For sure, for sure. Now for you, what would you say?
- 47:24Speaker 3: Is probably one of the things that people don't talk
- 47:28Speaker 3: about as much when it comes to creating content or
- 47:33Speaker 3: perhaps being this public of a person.
- 47:38Speaker 1: Ooh, I think people think it's easy to do. I
- 47:43Speaker 1: think people but it. But it's it's deaf, it's difficult.
- 47:48Speaker 1: I got into it when I was surrounded by other creators,
- 47:51Speaker 1: and it's like, oh, we're just holding each other's phones,
- 47:53Speaker 1: we're holding each other's cameras. I'm able to learn from
- 47:56Speaker 1: other people. If you're just getting into this on your
- 47:59Speaker 1: own right now, I it would be pretty difficult to
- 48:02Speaker 1: figure out where to start, you know. And so I
- 48:07Speaker 1: have branded myself as a multi sport athlete. Some people
- 48:09Speaker 1: haven't branded themselves as multi anything. Maybe they just have
- 48:13Speaker 1: one niche and it's like, okay, well, how do you
- 48:15Speaker 1: continue to entertain in that same niche without doing the
- 48:21Speaker 1: same thing as you've already done. How do you make
- 48:23Speaker 1: it different? How do you advance it? Maybe you add
- 48:26Speaker 1: something a progression to it. It's it's it's tough. I
- 48:30Speaker 1: like I said it. Luckily I've multi brand multi sport,
- 48:33Speaker 1: so I could do a football video, and you do
- 48:35Speaker 1: basketball video and pickleball or whatever. But it's difficult to
- 48:40Speaker 1: stay with the trends, to stay new, to stay fresh,
- 48:42Speaker 1: because you get you get burnt out. It's real, like Creator,
- 48:45Speaker 1: burnout is real. And it's like, I know Snapchat wants
- 48:49Speaker 1: me to post like fifty times a day, and I
- 48:52Speaker 1: just don't want to share all my life like that.
- 48:55Speaker 1: So it's it gets to be a little bit, it
- 48:59Speaker 1: could be could be a lot. So I think people
- 49:01Speaker 1: don't understand, Oh, Creator, are you just showing your life?
- 49:04Speaker 1: That's easy? It's not that easy.
- 49:07Speaker 2: Can we talk about that for a bet?
- 49:09Speaker 3: Though?
- 49:09Speaker 2: What do you do when you're burnt out?
- 49:12Speaker 1: It's it's tough. I mean, I know that this is
- 49:14Speaker 1: the life I chose, right, so you have to just
- 49:19Speaker 1: reflect and assess things and make sure, like like you said,
- 49:23Speaker 1: you're taking care of yourself. There's a reason why you're
- 49:25Speaker 1: burnt out. You you skipped on the priorities of taking
- 49:28Speaker 1: care of yourself before something. So it's planning, it's preparing.
- 49:32Speaker 1: I've been trying to do a better job of scheduling
- 49:35Speaker 1: massages and really taking some time to go spend with
- 49:38Speaker 1: my family, you know, see my little niece, And so
- 49:43Speaker 1: I think it's it's when I'm burnt out. It's about
- 49:47Speaker 1: moderation and getting back to what like just being a
- 49:51Speaker 1: normal person is, you know. Yeah, And I think it's
- 49:55Speaker 1: okay to not share your whole life on social media,
- 49:59Speaker 1: just showing like showing a glimpse of like it's still
- 50:02Speaker 1: a job. I could represent myself in this way. But
- 50:06Speaker 1: at the end of the day, I really am this
- 50:08Speaker 1: authentic tomboy girl. But you don't see you don't see
- 50:11Speaker 1: who I'm going on a date with. I love that.
- 50:16Speaker 3: And you know what, I think, it's like, your perception
- 50:18Speaker 3: is your reality. Right, So as a creator, you have
- 50:21Speaker 3: the opportunity to provide a picture of what your life
- 50:25Speaker 3: is like, knowing what makes you feel comfortable to share.
- 50:28Speaker 3: And now the problem that goes hand in hand with that,
- 50:31Speaker 3: as you've already articulated, is that people are going to
- 50:33Speaker 3: have something to say about it whether or not you
- 50:35Speaker 3: share it, right.
- 50:35Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, And sometimes you know, you have to post
- 50:40Speaker 1: content even if you're having a bad day. You and
- 50:44Speaker 1: like that, I know is tough for a lot of people,
- 50:46Speaker 1: especially if they're going through mental health problems or just whatever.
- 50:50Speaker 1: And you kind of have to put up a facade sometimes,
- 50:53Speaker 1: but it's part of your job, so it is it
- 50:57Speaker 1: can get kind of like it could get kind of
- 50:59Speaker 1: tough in that sense, it's for sure.
- 51:01Speaker 2: Yeah. Yeah, have you had to deal with that yourself?
- 51:05Speaker 1: Oh yeah, like dealing with heartbreak, breakups whatever. You know.
- 51:09Speaker 1: It's I know that it's great for your algorithm to
- 51:12Speaker 1: have at least four stories a day in post twice
- 51:14Speaker 1: a week, but maybe I'm not feeling like and sometimes
- 51:18Speaker 1: like let's say, let's say I'm just a creator is
- 51:22Speaker 1: over doing the same thing that they want and they
- 51:23Speaker 1: want to expand they want to start to multibrand stuff.
- 51:27Speaker 1: Sometimes if you post something that is off your niche,
- 51:30Speaker 1: off of your like routine of posts, you're going to
- 51:33Speaker 1: take that hit of views and you just kind of
- 51:37Speaker 1: have to you have to put up when you have
- 51:38Speaker 1: to deal with it, and you have to like you
- 51:40Speaker 1: have to stand strong and what you're doing and like,
- 51:42Speaker 1: you know what I deserve. I'm still a human, so
- 51:46Speaker 1: I can have my off days. You know. It's just
- 51:49Speaker 1: a little bit unfortunate that the world sees it all.
- 51:52Speaker 2: Yeah. I think it's also interesting as well.
- 51:54Speaker 3: I mean, like, for an example, if someone who has
- 51:57Speaker 3: been creating content for some time, is also a new mom,
- 52:02Speaker 3: and they start to share some of their journey with motherhood.
- 52:05Speaker 3: Without fail, there's always going to be people that come
- 52:08Speaker 3: in and say, like, well, I didn't follow you because
- 52:10Speaker 3: you were a mom, then unfollow me, get out.
- 52:13Speaker 1: Why are you commenting that stuff? Just don't even comment,
- 52:17Speaker 1: just don't follow me.
- 52:18Speaker 2: Then, yeah, I'll never forget that.
- 52:20Speaker 3: Tunday told me once, she said when we sat down
- 52:22Speaker 3: the last time that when she had become a Peloton instructor,
- 52:26Speaker 3: she was struggling with this fact that like all of
- 52:28Speaker 3: the you know, public feedback, unsolicited whatnot. And one of
- 52:33Speaker 3: her friends said to her, would you ever go to
- 52:36Speaker 3: someone else's Instagram and leave a nasty comment? And Tunday
- 52:39Speaker 3: was like no, And she was like, so why are
- 52:41Speaker 3: you gonna let that person.
- 52:43Speaker 2: Who has some nasty stuff to say to you impact you?
- 52:47Speaker 1: Interesting, that's a great way to look at it.
- 52:49Speaker 3: You would never do that for someone else. So like,
- 52:52Speaker 3: you can't take that person seriously.
- 52:54Speaker 1: Yeah, you can't take it personally. You know, it's a
- 52:57Speaker 1: certain type of person that's doing that type of stuff,
- 52:59Speaker 1: and usually it means that they got stuff going on
- 53:01Speaker 1: on their own.
- 53:01Speaker 3: Yeah, it's not you, it's them. All right, all right,
- 53:04Speaker 3: we're winding down here. Tell me, Jenna, what excites you
- 53:07Speaker 3: right now?
- 53:08Speaker 1: Getting facetimes from my sister and her little daughter. She's
- 53:13Speaker 1: the cutest little nugget in a world.
- 53:15Speaker 2: How old is she?
- 53:16Speaker 1: She's only two years old, and she just brightens up
- 53:20Speaker 1: my life.
- 53:21Speaker 2: You know.
- 53:21Speaker 1: She just gives me so much joy. And I get
- 53:24Speaker 1: this year pretty often, so that gives me excitement. I
- 53:28Speaker 1: do have to say pickleball. I love pickleball. I think
- 53:32Speaker 1: it is the best sport in America. I think it's
- 53:35Speaker 1: the best combination of power, faness iq athleticism. Like I
- 53:41Speaker 1: just love it. And people think it's oh just for
- 53:44Speaker 1: old people or it's not really cool. Try it and
- 53:49Speaker 1: you'll get addicted. You'll get the bug.
- 53:52Speaker 3: I have only played it once, and I definitely, like,
- 53:56Speaker 3: had no concept for what the rules.
- 53:57Speaker 2: Were or anything.
- 53:58Speaker 1: It's a lot of rules.
- 54:00Speaker 2: I don't have lot of fun.
- 54:01Speaker 3: Right now, Jenna, you have an opportunity to offer yourself
- 54:04Speaker 3: a piece of advice. After that second acl tear that
- 54:08Speaker 3: big hurdle moment, knowing what you know, now, what do
- 54:13Speaker 3: you tell yourself?
- 54:17Speaker 1: Wow, I would tell myself. I would tell myself. You know,
- 54:26Speaker 1: everyone has failures in life, and sometimes like everyone who's
- 54:32Speaker 1: doubting you, even your own doubts, that like not to
- 54:35Speaker 1: listen to them, because there's a lot of times that
- 54:39Speaker 1: I don't. I wasn't speaking positively to myself, and I
- 54:43Speaker 1: think we all do that. So I would tell myself
- 54:47Speaker 1: to get out of the ret quicker, you know, I
- 54:50Speaker 1: would tell myself to speak life to myself and not death. Jenna,
- 54:55Speaker 1: you got this, you know, don't talk neglie about yourself.
- 54:59Speaker 1: Would I would say, do that and I and I
- 55:01Speaker 1: eventually did, but it took some people that I had
- 55:04Speaker 1: to surround myself around to get back to that positive space.
- 55:09Speaker 1: But just to give myself a little bit more grace
- 55:13Speaker 1: and to speak positive to myself because I think manifestation
- 55:16Speaker 1: is real and and you attract what you want and
- 55:19Speaker 1: by saying and talking to yourself, it's a big thing.
- 55:23Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, positively.
- 55:24Speaker 3: When you're in a rut personally, like when you're on
- 55:28Speaker 3: the go or whatever and you're you're finding yourself kind
- 55:30Speaker 3: of dipping into that negative self talk space, what do
- 55:33Speaker 3: you do to get out of it?
- 55:34Speaker 1: There's like this quote that I really love and it's
- 55:37Speaker 1: was it a was it a bad was it a
- 55:40Speaker 1: bad day, or was it a bad five minutes that
- 55:43Speaker 1: you milked all day? So I think everyone has the
- 55:48Speaker 1: right to get mad, to be angry for a little bit,
- 55:54Speaker 1: but like, don't let that take over your whole day.
- 55:58Speaker 1: Give it a minute or two, five minutes, and then
- 56:01Speaker 1: let's go. We're overcoming, we're talking positively. It's time to
- 56:07Speaker 1: move forward. Next play mentality Right, what matters the most
- 56:12Speaker 1: isn't what already happened, it's what's going to happen next.
