- 0:00my guest today is Ramona Gonzalez Ramona
- 0:03has been in digital media for over 30
- 0:06years she has worked in small startups
- 0:10like rap and in large corporations like
- 0:13Microsoft more recently she has
- 0:16consulted to Industry trade groups like
- 0:18The IAB and the daa we're going to be
- 0:21talking today about her journey through
- 0:24the advertising space and focus on
- 0:27lessons learned that people just started
- 0:30out can learn from her experience Ramona
- 0:33I am so glad that you're able to join me
- 0:36today hi James I'm so happy to be with
- 0:38you I love your series it's been really
- 0:42really informational but also very
- 0:45entertaining excellent well thank you
- 0:47for the kind words um Ramona you and I
- 0:51met over 15 years ago and we were both
- 0:54at wrapped and then at Microsoft
- 0:56together but you started in the meteor
- 1:00industry way before that tell me how did
- 1:02you get into the industry and then how
- 1:05did you go from that to being the
- 1:06founding editor of Latina Magazine what
- 1:08what prompted that
- 1:10project
- 1:12well let me take a step back so I have a
- 1:15degree in journalism uh concentration in
- 1:18magazine editing and a a minor in
- 1:20women's studies so my first job out of
- 1:23college was Parenting Magazine it was I
- 1:25was very lucky because there's only two
- 1:28at the time two national mag magazines
- 1:30in San Francisco the other one being
- 1:32Mother Jones and then of course down in
- 1:34the bay Sunset magazine that all those
- 1:38all those wonderful Home and Garden
- 1:40magazines so I was very lucky I started
- 1:43there as an editorial assistant I um
- 1:47began my first few weeks there faxing
- 1:50yes that was before email we did get
- 1:53email at some point but faxing documents
- 1:56to Dr Benjamin Spock's wife Mary Morgan
- 2:00he became a contributor to the magazine
- 2:03um shortly before I joined uh Parenting
- 2:06Magazine and uh yeah so I met Dr
- 2:09Benjamin Spock who was you know helped
- 2:12my mother raise me and many other
- 2:14millions of children it was it was
- 2:16pretty wonderful um and I also was the
- 2:20toy editor there so I went to New York
- 2:22City every uh year for Toy Fair and um
- 2:28yeah it was it was such a wonderful full
- 2:30experience the Caliber Caliber of
- 2:32Excellence the highest of Standards um
- 2:35the pure talent and generosity of spirit
- 2:39taught me everything I
- 2:42needed to move to New York City and of
- 2:46you know and launch Latina Magazine uh
- 2:48so I was with parenting for four years
- 2:50and got you know a couple uh promotions
- 2:54in between you know during those four
- 2:56years and then um yes got the job at
- 3:01Latina Magazine I I I me I went to New
- 3:03York City I interviewed many different
- 3:06magazines um but Christy hurger
- 3:09contacted me after Marsha Gillespie the
- 3:14uh the editor-in-chief of Ms magazine
- 3:17who had met me the year previously or
- 3:19maybe that very year
- 3:211995 and recommended me and so that's
- 3:24how I met Christy hurger who was the
- 3:26publisher of Latina and uh yeah move my
- 3:30life from San Francisco to New York City
- 3:34and uh was the first managing editor
- 3:37which is basically the number two there
- 3:39was no executive editor and I I like I
- 3:42said I had the best training um from
- 3:45Parenting Magazine
- 3:47to what I think of as my first startup
- 3:50really um we did our first issue out of
- 3:53essence essence magazines offices in
- 3:56Time
- 3:57Square uh JLo was was our first cover uh
- 4:02that was when she did the Selena
- 4:04movie and
- 4:07uh yeah I actually became really close
- 4:10friends with Tony Duran who was the
- 4:13photographer who did did all of the
- 4:16photo shoots Beauty fashion down to
- 4:19Miami we all went down to Miami for the
- 4:21first issue he did not shoot Jennifer
- 4:25Lopez for that cover but he ended up
- 4:28becoming one of
- 4:31her uh her main photographer of choice
- 4:34for many many many many years so he
- 4:38would call me on the phone come over I
- 4:40don't know what to do with all this and
- 4:42he would just have all this you know all
- 4:45the outtakes from like the last shoot
- 4:47that she did and he's like I don't know
- 4:50what to do with all this and so I'd go
- 4:52over there and calm him down and you
- 4:53know help him edit whatever shoot he was
- 4:56doing with her and I actually met her
- 4:58longtime manager Medina who's actually a
- 5:01very nice
- 5:02man so uh but yeah I I wore and juggled
- 5:06many hats and I I loved every minute of
- 5:09it it was I literally woke up and it was
- 5:11like couldn't get couldn't wait to get
- 5:13to
- 5:14work we we'll get in a minute to the
- 5:17question of you know how to think about
- 5:19managing your career later in your
- 5:22career but if you um cast your mind back
- 5:25to that stage when you just starting out
- 5:28if you had advice for either your
- 5:31younger self or for someone who's now
- 5:34coming out of a journalism program and
- 5:36just starting out what would that advice
- 5:39be or what are the the key sort of
- 5:40lessons learned from your
- 5:42career always think bigger right like
- 5:46when I was in J School my my goal was to
- 5:49be an editor at Vogue magazine now that
- 5:53was my younger self a little shallow
- 5:55perhaps
- 5:57but that's that's that was my aim um and
- 6:03it was very narrowly fixed I think that
- 6:05I pivoted pretty quickly and well after
- 6:10uh after Latina but I really thought of
- 6:13magazines as being the be all endall
- 6:17right and it's great to be passionate
- 6:20about what you went to college for right
- 6:23but just keep an open mind that you may
- 6:26not be doing what you set out to do
- 6:30even five years later much less 20 years
- 6:33later
- 6:35um I think
- 6:37personally if uh my younger self could
- 6:40go back and talk to my I mean my older
- 6:43self go back to talk to my younger self
- 6:46I would say consider a career in public
- 6:50office oh interesting and and why public
- 6:54office over the past three decades I'm a
- 6:58political Junkie
- 7:00um but I was also raised in a very
- 7:02heavily
- 7:03Democratic house with very uh social
- 7:08ideas in terms of making sure that your
- 7:11fellow man has the same opportunities as
- 7:14you do uh my father was the uh first of
- 7:19seven sons the only one who went to
- 7:21college got his Masters both my parents
- 7:24were teachers so it was a very academic
- 7:27household very political in this sense
- 7:30of
- 7:31um you know
- 7:34social programs like Social Security and
- 7:38Affordable Care Act like all of those
- 7:40things were a big part of
- 7:44um the way I was raised right
- 7:47colorblind right um no
- 7:51racism
- 7:53um emphasis on cultural things and
- 7:57languages and music and and museums
- 8:01so when I see what's happening now it
- 8:06just it makes my head explode and I feel
- 8:11that I didn't know at the time say when
- 8:13I was 18 or
- 8:1526 that a lot of the skill sets that I
- 8:18now have would be perfect for I don't
- 8:21want to be a politician I just want to
- 8:23be a lawmaker I just
- 8:25want so so let's bridge on that maybe
- 8:28not get into the broad
- 8:30Poli staying within media and
- 8:33particularly digital media it it's no
- 8:36secret that Latinas and Latinos are
- 8:39under represented in digital media at
- 8:42times I imagine it must be lonely uh I
- 8:46know there are networks within the the
- 8:49broader digital media space that sort of
- 8:51help support each other within the
- 8:52Latino and Latino Community um how do
- 8:56you think about your role within that
- 8:58community and what advice do you have
- 9:01for people who maybe have uh English as
- 9:04their second language maybe this native
- 9:07Spanish speakers how to frankly build a
- 9:10successful career within digital
- 9:13media well if you're a Latino Hispanic
- 9:17Spanish language speaking
- 9:21person you have way more opportunities
- 9:24than you did before because the first of
- 9:28all Latinos Hispanics however you want
- 9:31to designate
- 9:33them we are the largest growing
- 9:38population Spanish language is the
- 9:40second language of the United States and
- 9:44we
- 9:45as a
- 9:48group watch more streaming video we're
- 9:51on our devices we are basically more um
- 9:56apt to because again a lot of Hispanic
- 10:00families you have a lot of different
- 10:02Generations living in the same household
- 10:04so they're streaming they're doing this
- 10:06they're doing that and but yet we still
- 10:10have a dir of Latino actors
- 10:14producers just basically shows that are
- 10:17on
- 10:18mainstream that show the the the
- 10:21American Hispanic life uh of course
- 10:24there's exceptions for sure but um
- 10:28that's sort of where
- 10:30the dir is is happening but it's
- 10:34absolutely getting better I think
- 10:37that I having spent most of my career in
- 10:42New York City there's this built-in
- 10:44diversity right
- 10:48so I kind of go into situations
- 10:51completely colorblind I don't clock
- 10:54who's white who's Indian who's
- 10:57African-American
- 11:00I do clock every once in a
- 11:02while the ratio between men and women in
- 11:05a conference room because I've spent
- 11:07most of my career as being one of 10 or
- 11:10two of
- 11:1215 but again I didn't really clock it
- 11:14that much because I walked into that
- 11:16room um to do a job with really
- 11:22uh exceptional people and we had
- 11:25problems to solve and that's what I was
- 11:26focused on most mainly I never
- 11:30experienced racism in the job which was
- 11:33which was I was I guess I was lucky yeah
- 11:36but when what resources are available
- 11:40for the Latino community in terms of
- 11:43either online resources networking
- 11:46resources I've got to assume that there
- 11:48are materials and resources
- 11:51available I'm sure there is but again I
- 11:56would I would recommend not
- 12:00for for people who are Hispanic and
- 12:03Latino just get in with like-minded
- 12:06people right again it doesn't you don't
- 12:09have to be in an environment that's all
- 12:12brown people right because we're
- 12:16different there's Dominican Republican
- 12:18uh Republicans
- 12:21Dominican there's Puerto Ricans there's
- 12:24um Cubanos Mexicans um Spaniards Central
- 12:29American so we are a very diverse group
- 12:33of people that cannot be just placed in
- 12:36one Silo so forget about your skin color
- 12:43just be with likeminded people who you
- 12:48feel comfortable with who can support
- 12:51you and um inspire you um keep you
- 12:57accountable and just
- 13:00I mean isn't that what we all want to
- 13:03eventually get to where we do not think
- 13:06about how
- 13:07many black people are in the room or
- 13:10Hispanic people in the room or Asian
- 13:12people in the room so make your
- 13:17heritage
- 13:19less about yourself when you're in a
- 13:22professional environment right your
- 13:27perspective is a plus you're bringing
- 13:30that with you already right and um and
- 13:34that's where you can let your
- 13:36perspective
- 13:37shine brilliant I think we have to yeah
- 13:40I think we have to move away from
- 13:42because it gets us in trouble right now
- 13:44Dei is like it's being used against us
- 13:48so it's not complicated it's certainly
- 13:53definitely so complicated talk to me
- 13:55about the swing and D you and I had a
- 13:57conversation a few weeks ago go where we
- 13:59talked about how partly because of the
- 14:02changing political and climate part of
- 14:04it's just a natural swings of pendulums
- 14:07there was a lot of emphasis around Dei
- 14:10it seems to have taken a little bit of a
- 14:12backseat recently is that your
- 14:16experience I think it's taking a back
- 14:18seat because it's had it's been forced
- 14:20to take a back seat I mean with with I
- 14:23mean just this morning listening to the
- 14:25news you know the Republicans are now SL
- 14:29in kamla Harris as a Dei hire right and
- 14:34that does not give any Credence to her a
- 14:36massive capabilities and professional
- 14:40successes as a a prosecutor and as the
- 14:44vice president so they're trying to
- 14:46minimize her by making Dei a negative
- 14:52thing okay um you know I spoke to Angie
- 14:56in a few months ago and we a lot of good
- 14:59feedback about her sort of tips and
- 15:01tricks for running a job search and
- 15:03managing your
- 15:05career uh similar question to you as you
- 15:08sort of think about later stage career
- 15:11well actually for really anybody who
- 15:13might be listening to this the world
- 15:15continues to evolve particularly for
- 15:17those of us who are in media and in Tech
- 15:21and what we have to do to be successful
- 15:23in our careers also changes almost dayto
- 15:27day as you think about you know you know
- 15:30what people should be doing to manage
- 15:32their career what are the top sort of
- 15:34two or three things that spring to mind
- 15:36for
- 15:37you well it's funny that you say that
- 15:39because I'm actually in the middle of a
- 15:41job search and I can tell you that it is
- 15:47absolutely frustrating anxiety-provoking
- 15:51depressing and
- 15:53demoralizing and this is from someone
- 15:57who's had a great career so so far I've
- 15:59been Consulting you know for almost 15
- 16:02years now I've had great
- 16:04projects um uh my love of Consulting
- 16:08actually came from my time working with
- 16:11James in advisory services that he
- 16:13launched pretty much a couple days
- 16:15before I joined the company funny
- 16:19story I joined the company flew out to
- 16:22San Francisco on a
- 16:24Thursday met
- 16:26James James said can you do an hour
- 16:29Presentation tomorrow during lunch over
- 16:33pizza for the company because we don't
- 16:36really you're the only person who's come
- 16:38from a publisher before can you do like
- 16:41publishing one publisher digital
- 16:43publishing oneon-one
- 16:46tomorrow well you you know that I have
- 16:50no fear about either throwing myself
- 16:52into that situation or apparently
- 16:54throwing anyone else into that sitation
- 16:59things worked out pretty well oh it was
- 17:01great I still have that deck it was
- 17:05fantastic I was like okay it was five
- 17:07o'clock I'm like I guess I'm going back
- 17:08to my hotel room and doing a deck no it
- 17:12was great it was it was the perfect way
- 17:14to to to start my my time at wrapped but
- 17:18um yeah
- 17:19so James and I went out and he had just
- 17:22started advisory services at wrapped and
- 17:24we did some great projects um with
- 17:28shutter f starting their first
- 17:31advertising uh operations and uh we did
- 17:34a we we went all around the country I
- 17:38think for Cox we did five cities in five
- 17:42days that was
- 17:44insane um anyway let me go back to the
- 17:48the question yes so after 15 years of
- 17:52Consulting I'm considering going back
- 17:55into um one company role and
- 17:59it's been rough and I think it's been
- 18:02rough for many different reasons but one
- 18:05of the reasons why it's been rough is
- 18:07because
- 18:09my work experience is so diverse I've
- 18:14you know I started off as a as a a
- 18:17journalist then a Content person then a
- 18:20technologist then a publisher and and
- 18:23I've done a whole bunch of stuff in
- 18:25between and then my industry uh or um
- 18:29digital industry organization work in
- 18:32terms of spearheading and managing a
- 18:37whole bunch of working groups and task
- 18:38forces and advisory boards for uh the
- 18:42ifp uh ifp um IAB and the IAB Tech Lab
- 18:48which I joined at the very outset and
- 18:51ran with Steve Sullivan and that was
- 18:54also an amazing amazing
- 18:56experience but back to the job hunt um I
- 19:01found this great program called never
- 19:05sit your Alan it's a free support group
- 19:07of peer job Seekers who meet on a weekly
- 19:11basis to help each other find the jobs
- 19:14the next job that they will love and
- 19:17it's because having peers can really
- 19:19make all the difference in not feeling
- 19:21alone and and navigating what is a very
- 19:25emotional ride of a job search um
- 19:29um searching for a new job one that
- 19:31you'll love is is frustrating like I
- 19:35said and anxiety-provoking but when you
- 19:38support and are supported by other super
- 19:41highly accomplished people like yourself
- 19:44it's a completely different experience
- 19:46the negative is replaced with the
- 19:49Positive you've got hope you have
- 19:50motivation you have
- 19:52accountability and um yeah I mean I've
- 19:56just been I'm the moderator of my job
- 19:59search Council which is where you do all
- 20:00the work you know first you join a job
- 20:02search Council you get to know each
- 20:05other and then you really start working
- 20:07on your through a series of different
- 20:10exercises you work on your Market
- 20:13candidate fit which
- 20:14is thinking of that you're the product
- 20:18right and how do you fit in as a product
- 20:21in the
- 20:22marketplace and um so that's that's
- 20:26called creating your Market candidate
- 20:28fit which frankly that's the one area
- 20:31that I'm having a little bit of trouble
- 20:33with because I'm such a generalist but a
- 20:35specialist I love doing a lot of
- 20:37different
- 20:39things and working with in a lot of
- 20:42different
- 20:44uh areas and working with a lot of
- 20:48different people and departments and
- 20:50doing different things like when I was
- 20:51with rap I was working with James I was
- 20:55doing product development with the
- 20:57product development team and I was a
- 20:58sales engineer and doing demos of all of
- 21:01our super complex Solutions and tools so
- 21:06that was amazing I love that so it's
- 21:08hard as someone who likes to do a lot of
- 21:10things to do a a candidate Market fit
- 21:13statement that has to be one sentence
- 21:16and super super customized so
- 21:20struggling but I guess I guess one
- 21:22question is different people have very
- 21:24different approaches you you and I both
- 21:27know people sort of gone about it they
- 21:30they say they're doing a listening tour
- 21:32they'll go out and basically have 50 or
- 21:34100 cups of coffee with with different
- 21:36people really just to sort of find out
- 21:39what's out there other people tend to
- 21:41have a very structured approach in terms
- 21:43of you know it sounds like you know
- 21:46creating profile of how you fit with
- 21:49particular roles and and then proceeding
- 21:51to go apply for those types of roles how
- 21:53do you think about the range of
- 21:55different ways in which someone can go
- 21:57about a job search
- 21:59well what I love about this never search
- 22:01alone process is that yes one of the
- 22:05main steps or stages or phases is
- 22:10embarking on a listening tour like our
- 22:12friend Andrew craft
- 22:15is the the listenting tours are supposed
- 22:17to help you get closer to your job
- 22:23candidate Market fit I will but I like
- 22:26that you brought up the fact that
- 22:27there's different ways way to approach
- 22:29even within this what I call a program
- 22:32right and as moderator and I and I
- 22:35attend the bi-weekly moderator uh Zoom
- 22:40calls is and I told myself from the very
- 22:42beginning it's like we don't have to do
- 22:44things exactly like the book says right
- 22:48we take what is valuable for
- 22:52us and then we use that as a Launchpad
- 22:56to get through all the different phases
- 22:58and steps to that that we all agree are
- 23:02valid and helpful
- 23:04but we're nowhere near like the timeline
- 23:08that is has been prescribed right um
- 23:12within the book like within 10 days I
- 23:15mean 10 weeks you're supposed to have
- 23:16your listening tour done and we're like
- 23:18we're on four months right
- 23:21so but and and and again we we've had
- 23:25some members uh leave and new members
- 23:29come and it's summer so but yes it's
- 23:34it's it's great to think of the the way
- 23:37that they W the program helps you think
- 23:40about yourself and then when you're with
- 23:41these other people you get thing you get
- 23:46so much insight into yourself and how
- 23:51you could fit into the marketplace that
- 23:54you hadn't even thought of before and
- 23:56that's really valuable above and
- 23:59Beyond just being there for each other
- 24:02um listening to the frustrations of
- 24:04being ghosted you know by a recruiter
- 24:07who seemed really interested in putting
- 24:09you together with a hiring manager and
- 24:11then you know you show up for like this
- 24:14literally happened with my my Council uh
- 24:17last week
- 24:19where uh someone literally showed up in
- 24:22person for an interview and got ghosted
- 24:25and then finally got hold of the person
- 24:28he was supposed to be interviewing with
- 24:3010 minutes after and the guy was like no
- 24:33I want the full hour even though there
- 24:35was 50 minutes left and it was his
- 24:38fault so those are the kind of things
- 24:41that you can bring you know to a call
- 24:45and just spend five minutes just
- 24:49venting and and you leave the call
- 24:52feeling better about what happened and
- 24:55feeling more invigorated and hey that's
- 24:57that and just going to move forward so
- 25:00those those are the things that are I
- 25:02think emotionally like that's actually
- 25:04how I start off every meeting is how did
- 25:08how did you feel emotionally this week
- 25:11yeah and then the other part of the
- 25:12process which I love is called boss the
- 25:14process um which is you know taking
- 25:17charge of interviews and I've always
- 25:19kind of been like that because I've
- 25:20always interviewed I don't know I want
- 25:22the job you sell me on the job um but a
- 25:26lot of people don't think like that or
- 25:27haven't thought like that so it's
- 25:29bossing the
- 25:30process but it's something that you also
- 25:33said about uh James something that you
- 25:36said that Tom said um that you can't
- 25:40really
- 25:41run a
- 25:43profitable I'm paraphrasing crazy
- 25:47without doing it with people and and
- 25:50you're talking about Tom shave previous
- 25:53uh CEO of rap and Crux and and now at
- 25:57Super
- 25:59I think you know a strong voice in the
- 26:01community and he's very much said you
- 26:03can't start your own business anymore it
- 26:06takes a team and I think you know we're
- 26:09seeing that through a lot of you know
- 26:12everything in life but especially
- 26:13finding and and creating new jobs but
- 26:16even after you get the job s around but
- 26:19after you get the job a lot of people
- 26:21stay in their job search councils to
- 26:24continue to help those who don't have a
- 26:26job and those people who don't have a
- 26:29job still help that person with getting
- 26:32you know with with the few F first few
- 26:34weeks of transitioning into a new job he
- 26:38also has and again this is all for free
- 26:41it's completely volunteer based but he
- 26:45does have another company um the never
- 26:48search alone guy
- 26:50Phil
- 26:52PHL um he phil.org he also has a company
- 26:57called collaborative game and it's
- 26:59leaders helping leaders so realtime
- 27:02tactical and strategic help from
- 27:04non-competing peers that will help you
- 27:07make you know better faster decisions as
- 27:09an executive and it's
- 27:12it's from what I hear it's pretty
- 27:15amazing so yeah once you get your job
- 27:18it's not really over right you know you
- 27:21you want to do your best at the job you
- 27:23want to do the best for your people um
- 27:26and sometimes you still need help doing
- 27:28that yeah um Ramona thank you so much
- 27:32for taking the time I'm going to go
- 27:33ahead and make sure that I post with
