Latest / THE DAILY BRIEF / Trump adviser to Canadian lobbyists 'Get the hell out of our country'
Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: Tensions appear to be escalating yet again in the ongoing
- 0:02Speaker 1: trade war. As one U.S. official says, Canadian lobbyists should, quote,
- 0:06Speaker 1: get the hell out of our country. That is a quote.
- 0:09Speaker 1: This comes as additional bans on Canadian products went into
- 0:12Speaker 1: effect just after midnight. Speaking at a conference in Washington
- 0:16Speaker 1: this afternoon, the economic advisor to Trump, Peter Navarro, zeroed
- 0:21Speaker 1: in on Canadian negotiators.
- 0:24Speaker 2: The problem politically now in Canada is this this tension
- 0:30Speaker 2: between what's good for the Canadian people and what's good
- 0:33Speaker 2: for Mark Carney and Doug Ford. OK, Mark Carney and
- 0:37Speaker 2: Doug Ford just talk trash about Donald Trump. That's what
- 0:42Speaker 2: they do. And then they go up in the polls
- 0:44Speaker 2: and they think that's a winning strategy. And all that does,
- 0:48Speaker 2: we look at that and go, oh, that's not smart. OK,
- 0:51Speaker 2: do your thing. You got tariffs now.
- 0:53Speaker 1: What are you going to do? Donald Trump said just
- 0:57Speaker 1: yesterday he believes the deal can be struck in the
- 1:00Speaker 1: coming weeks. Canadian officials say talks with the U.S. remain ongoing.
- 1:03Speaker 1: Let's bring in CBC's J.P. Tasker, who is in Washington.
- 1:07Speaker 1: And J.P., tell us more about these comments from Navarro today.
- 1:10Speaker 3: Yeah, as you heard there, one of the president's top
- 1:12Speaker 3: trade advisors has some very tough words for Canada. Peter
- 1:15Speaker 3: Navarro was speaking at an event here in Washington today,
- 1:18Speaker 3: and he raised the possibility of Canada interfering in the
- 1:22Speaker 3: upcoming midterm elections that are happening here in the U.S.
- 1:25Speaker 3: They're only 35 days away, and he issued a threat.
- 1:28Speaker 3: Have a listen to that piece of tape.
- 1:30Speaker 2: Canada, economically, is like a robo.
- 1:34Speaker 1: We're an.
- 1:37Speaker 2: Aircraft carrier. How's that going to end? Any Canadians here, like, please,
- 1:42Speaker 2: if you're on K Street, get the hell out of
- 1:44Speaker 2: our country. The problem you have is you lobby this
- 1:48Speaker 2: country and you've been successful in the past and you
- 1:51Speaker 2: think you can keep doing that. Memo to Canada, you
- 1:54Speaker 2: cannot do that. OK, that game is up. And if
- 1:58Speaker 2: you interfere in our elections in Maine or Michigan, you
- 2:01Speaker 2: will pay even more dearly.
- 2:04Speaker 3: We're not sure exactly what he's referring to in terms
- 2:06Speaker 3: of election interference. I mean, Canada isn't running an ad
- 2:09Speaker 3: campaign down here right now. There's no repeat campaign. of
- 2:12Speaker 3: Ontario's anti-tariff Ronald Reagan commercials, which of course raised the
- 2:16Speaker 3: ire of Trump. But nonetheless, quite a threatening tone from Mr. Navarro,
- 2:20Speaker 3: who is a frequent foe of Canada, and he has
- 2:23Speaker 3: the president's ear on trade matters. And, you know, some
- 2:26Speaker 3: sources I've spoken to in the past, Ian, have said
- 2:29Speaker 3: that Mr. Navarro has whipped up a lot of the
- 2:31Speaker 3: anti-Canada sentiment in this administration. I should add that Prime
- 2:36Speaker 3: Minister Carney was asked about these remarks earlier today, and
- 2:38Speaker 3: he says he has no response to Mr. Navarro. As
- 2:42Speaker 3: you mentioned off the top, these comments come on the
- 2:44Speaker 3: same day that Trump is inflicting even more economic pain
- 2:47Speaker 3: on Canada. He's imposing hugely damaging import bans, outright blocking
- 2:52Speaker 3: a list of Canadian-made products from crossing the 49th parallel,
- 2:56Speaker 3: including Canadian alcohol. It's going to be a huge problem.
- 2:59Speaker 3: We export about $ 1. 2 billion worth of beer, wine and
- 3:02Speaker 3: spirits down here to the U.S. every year. So there's
- 3:05Speaker 3: an economic earthquake coming for that industry and potentially more
- 3:09Speaker 3: if we're to believe Mr.
- 3:10Speaker 4: Navarro.
- 3:11Speaker 1: Yeah, it's not lost, I'm sure, on our viewers that
- 3:14Speaker 1: right after we see the clip of Navarro complaining about
- 3:17Speaker 1: the Prime Minister and the Ontario Premier talking trash, I
- 3:19Speaker 1: think he said, then he makes the comments he does
- 3:22Speaker 1: about Canada. I'm not sure how the American audience, if
- 3:25Speaker 1: they pick that up as well. Listen, Canadian officials spoke
- 3:29Speaker 1: about trade negotiations, though the tone of those comments, from
- 3:33Speaker 1: what I hear, considerably different.
- 3:35Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean, there's really no talk of a resolution, though, frankly, Ian.
- 3:39Speaker 3: I mean, there's no indication that anything is coming together
- 3:41Speaker 3: anytime soon to avoid these import bans, to avoid these tariffs. Canada-U.S.
- 3:46Speaker 3: Trade Minister Dominic LeBlanc says the federal government is not
- 3:49Speaker 3: desperate to make a deal with the Americans. The feds
- 3:52Speaker 3: don't want to settle for what they call a bad deal,
- 3:55Speaker 3: even if it means living with some of these trade
- 3:57Speaker 3: actions for a little bit longer. Minister LeBlanc spoke this afternoon.
- 4:01Speaker 3: Have a listen to what he had to say.
- 4:03Speaker 4: We remain in contact with them, and if The Prime
- 4:06Speaker 4: Minister concludes at some point that there's a deal possible
- 4:10Speaker 4: that protects the sovereignty of our country, that would be
- 4:14Speaker 4: in the economic interests of the country. Then we would
- 4:18Speaker 4: obviously be in a position to have that conversation. But
- 4:20Speaker 4: for the moment, we're focusing on what we can control
- 4:24Speaker 4: in Canada, building big projects in every part of the country,
- 4:28Speaker 4: diversifying our trading relationships around the world. That has always
- 4:32Speaker 4: been plan A, and that's what the government's focused on.
- 4:35Speaker 3: President Trump thinks that Canada will come looking for a
- 4:38Speaker 3: deal in three or four weeks' time. That's what he
- 4:41Speaker 3: told reporters at the White House. I have really not
- 4:44Speaker 3: heard any of that sort of optimism from the Canadian side.
- 4:46Speaker 3: Of course, the terms of the last supposed deal really
- 4:49Speaker 3: did not work out for Canada. There were serious concerns
- 4:52Speaker 3: about sovereignty. You know, some of the language in there
- 4:55Speaker 3: was hugely problematic for the Canadians. And there's been no sign,
- 4:58Speaker 3: especially given what we heard from Mr. Navarro today, that
- 5:01Speaker 3: the Americans are willing to change much of anything, especially
- 5:03Speaker 3: when it comes to tone. So it could be a
- 5:06Speaker 3: while before the prime minister sees something that he can
- 5:08Speaker 3: live with.
- 5:09Speaker 1: Ian? Usually in Ottawa, the CBC's JP Tasker in Washington tonight.
- 5:13Speaker 1: Thank you.
- 5:14Speaker 3: Thank you.
