Latest / The Gastro Truth with Dr. Mel Ona / GI Doctor Exposes 7 Viral Gut Products (And Which One To AVOID)
Transcript
- 0:00SPEAKER_00: Seven gut health products are all over your social media feed right now.
- 0:04SPEAKER_00: I've had every one of them handed to me across my desk, usually in a bag by someone who spent real money and isn't any better.
- 0:10SPEAKER_00: So I'm going to go through all seven, what each one claims, what it actually does inside a digestive tract, and whether I'd tell a patient to spend a dollar on it.
- 0:18SPEAKER_00: Most of them don't do what you think they do.
- 0:20SPEAKER_00: One of them I'd tell you to stop taking today, and two of them I'd pay for myself.
- 0:25SPEAKER_00: I'm Dr.
- 0:26SPEAKER_00: Mel Ona, a gastroenterologist in private practice in Hawaii with a master's degree in nutritional biochemistry.
- 0:32SPEAKER_00: So here's the part of being a gastroenterologist I didn't see coming.
- 0:36SPEAKER_00: So much of my day is about things people bought on their phone at midnight.
- 0:40SPEAKER_00: They bring the bag in, an actual bag, on my desk, full of stuff.
- 0:44SPEAKER_00: None of it matched to any diagnosis because a diagnosis was never made.
- 0:48SPEAKER_00: And look, I understand how you got there.
- 0:51SPEAKER_00: Two years of symptoms, appointments that went nowhere, and then somebody on screen in your social media feed with a confident voice and good lighting says they've got the answer.
- 1:00SPEAKER_00: Of course you try it.
- 1:01SPEAKER_00: That's not gullible.
- 1:02SPEAKER_00: That's what running out of options looks like.
- 1:04SPEAKER_00: So let's go through the shelf.
- 1:06SPEAKER_00: So trend number one, colon cleanses and detox powders.
- 1:10SPEAKER_00: Colon cleanses and gut detox powders.
- 1:13SPEAKER_00: This is the category that genuinely gets me going.
- 1:16SPEAKER_00: Here's why.
- 1:17SPEAKER_00: Waste is stuck to your colon wall.
- 1:19SPEAKER_00: It's been sitting there for years, and this product is going to remove it.
- 1:22SPEAKER_00: That's not a thing.
- 1:23SPEAKER_00: I've spent my medical career looking at the inside of colons.
- 1:26SPEAKER_00: There is no compacted layer of ancient material in there waiting to be scrubbed off.
- 1:31SPEAKER_00: Your colon empties itself.
- 1:32SPEAKER_00: It's extremely good at it.
- 1:34SPEAKER_00: That's its entire job.
- 1:35SPEAKER_00: What these products actually do is make you go to the bathroom a lot, usually with a stimulant laxative.
- 1:42SPEAKER_00: Then you feel lighter.
- 1:43SPEAKER_00: That's the part that sells you the next bottle.
- 1:46SPEAKER_00: So what you actually lost was water and stool.
- 1:49SPEAKER_00: Now here's what makes this one different from everything else on the list.
- 1:52SPEAKER_00: Use a stimulant laxative regularly enough and it gets harder to go without it.
- 1:56SPEAKER_00: I've watched people end up in that spot and it isn't a fun place to climb back out of.
- 2:01SPEAKER_00: So this is the one I'll tell you to avoid.
- 2:03SPEAKER_00: It's the only thing in this video that can actually leave you worse off than when you started.
- 2:07SPEAKER_00: Trend number two, parasite cleanses.
- 2:10SPEAKER_00: Now, parasite cleanses are that same idea with a scarier story attached to it.
- 2:15SPEAKER_00: If you actually have a parasite, there's a stool test for that and a real medication for it.
- 2:20SPEAKER_00: Now, if you don't have one, you're taking herbs for a problem you don't have.
- 2:24SPEAKER_00: So that's two products you never have to buy again, and we're only two in.
- 2:28SPEAKER_00: Hit subscribe.
- 2:29SPEAKER_00: I do this every week.
- 2:30SPEAKER_00: Plain answers about your gut from somebody with no supplement line and nothing to sell you.
- 2:35SPEAKER_00: Alright, let's keep going.
- 2:36SPEAKER_00: So trend three, celery juice.
- 2:39SPEAKER_00: The next two aren't dangerous.
- 2:41SPEAKER_00: They're just not doing what you think they're doing.
- 2:43SPEAKER_00: Bottled celery juice.
- 2:44SPEAKER_00: It's celery.
- 2:45SPEAKER_00: It's fine.
- 2:46SPEAKER_00: You're getting some water, some potassium, a bit of vitamin K, and you've thrown away most of the fiber, which was the useful part of the celery.
- 2:53SPEAKER_00: Now if you like it, drink it.
- 2:55SPEAKER_00: It's not medicine.
- 2:56SPEAKER_00: Trend number four, apple cider vinegar.
- 2:59SPEAKER_00: So apple cider vinegar before meals.
- 3:01SPEAKER_00: There is some real research on vinegar and blood sugar response, so this one isn't nothing.
- 3:06SPEAKER_00: But it isn't doing anything for bloating.
- 3:08SPEAKER_00: It isn't fixing reflux either.
- 3:10SPEAKER_00: And if you have reflux, adding acid before a meal is an odd plan.
- 3:14SPEAKER_00: Also, dilute it.
- 3:15SPEAKER_00: I've seen what undiluted vinegar does to tooth enamel and to the lining of an esophagus.
- 3:19SPEAKER_00: So that's the honest verdict on a lot of what's out there.
- 3:22SPEAKER_00: Not a scam, just aimed at the wrong thing.
- 3:24SPEAKER_00: So trend number five, the daily probiotic.
- 3:27SPEAKER_00: Now the one sitting in almost every bag that comes into my office, the daily probiotic.
- 3:32SPEAKER_00: And I have to be careful with this one because the answer isn't a clean no.
- 3:36SPEAKER_00: The pitch is that more bacteria means a better gut.
- 3:38SPEAKER_00: That's the idea the whole category is built on, and it's the single most overstated thing in gut health right now.
- 3:44SPEAKER_00: So here's what's actually true.
- 3:51SPEAKER_00: Antibiotic associated diarrhea has decent evidence behind it.
- 3:54SPEAKER_00: So do certain presentations of irritable bowel syndrome, IBS.
- 3:58SPEAKER_00: With the right strain chosen for that reason, it's a legitimate treatment.
- 4:01SPEAKER_00: But that's not what most of these people are doing.
- 4:03SPEAKER_00: Most people grab a generic one off the shelf for gut health in general, with no idea which strain is in it or what that strain has been shown to do.
- 4:11SPEAKER_00: There's also a scenario where it actually actively backfires.
- 4:14SPEAKER_00: If you've got bacterial overgrowth in your small intestine, you're adding more bacteria to a place that already has too many.
- 4:20SPEAKER_00: That's why some people start a probiotic feel measurably worse for two weeks and assume they just picked the wrong brand.
- 4:26SPEAKER_00: So it doesn't make my two.
- 4:28SPEAKER_00: Not because probiotics don't work, it's that most people aren't taking them the way they work.
- 4:33SPEAKER_00: Trend number six, prebiotic soluble fiber, which is worth it.
- 4:36SPEAKER_00: So here are the two.
- 4:37SPEAKER_00: First one is prebiotic soluble fiber, unglamorous, cheap, sold in a plane tub, and it's the single thing I'd put money on if I could only pick one.
- 4:45SPEAKER_00: Now here's why.
- 4:46SPEAKER_00: Your gut bacteria eat fiber.
- 4:48SPEAKER_00: When they do, they produce short-chain fatty acids, and those are the fuel your colon lining runs on.
- 4:54SPEAKER_00: Feed them properly, and you improve your bowel regularity, your cholesterol, your blood sugar response, and the diversity of the whole population in there.
- 5:01SPEAKER_00: That's four things from one boring tub.
- 5:04SPEAKER_00: So most people get nowhere near the fiber they need, and they get it from three or four of the same foods.
- 5:09SPEAKER_00: So fiber variety matters as much as volume because different fibers feed different bacterial species.
- 5:14SPEAKER_00: And nobody makes videos about either of these two.
- 5:17SPEAKER_00: There's no money in them.
- 5:18SPEAKER_00: The trend seven is magnesium for a specific person, which is worth it.
- 5:21SPEAKER_00: Second one, again, is magnesium for a specific person.
- 5:24SPEAKER_00: If you're constipating and you're low on it, magnesium helps.
- 5:27SPEAKER_00: It also happens to help with sleep and with muscle cramps.
- 5:30SPEAKER_00: Now that's not a gut health miracle, that's correcting a deficiency, which is exactly when a supplement is supposed to work.
- 5:36SPEAKER_00: Now notice what those two have in common.
- 5:38SPEAKER_00: Neither one promises to fix everything.
- 5:40SPEAKER_00: They both do one thing you can name and a person you can identify.
- 5:44SPEAKER_00: That's the whole test.
- 5:45SPEAKER_00: If a product can't tell you which specific problem it solves, it isn't a treatment.
- 5:49SPEAKER_00: It's a guess with packaging.
- 5:51SPEAKER_00: So what the money should buy instead.
- 5:53SPEAKER_00: Let me tell you where I'd put that money instead.
- 5:55SPEAKER_00: If you've been genuinely trying things for three months and nothing has moved, stop buying and start testing.
- 6:02SPEAKER_00: That's the line.
- 6:03SPEAKER_00: Three months.
- 6:04SPEAKER_00: Not another product, a diagnosis.
- 6:06SPEAKER_00: That usually means a gastroenterologist and a short list of specific tests.
- 6:11SPEAKER_00: A breath test if the pattern points to bacterial overgrowth.
- 6:14SPEAKER_00: A stool test that measures actual inflammation in your gut lining.
- 6:18SPEAKER_00: A review of every medication you're taking, which catches more than people expect.
- 6:22SPEAKER_00: Now those tests cost a fraction of a year of supplements.
- 6:26SPEAKER_00: They answer a question instead of asking you to keep guessing.
- 6:29SPEAKER_00: So here's how you'll know you're in the right conversation.
- 6:32SPEAKER_00: A good workup narrows things down.
- 6:34SPEAKER_00: If you walk out with a specific thing ruled in or ruled out, that's progress.
- 6:39SPEAKER_00: Even when the answer isn't what you wanted.
- 6:41SPEAKER_00: If you walk out with another general plan and no test ordered, that's the same loop you've been in, just with a lab coat in it.
- 6:48SPEAKER_00: So most people who buy all this did something right first.
- 6:52SPEAKER_00: They cleaned up their diet, but it didn't fix their gut issues.
- 6:55SPEAKER_00: There's a real reason for that.
- 6:56SPEAKER_00: I made a whole video on why a genuinely good diet doesn't fix certain gut problems.
- 7:02SPEAKER_00: If that's you, watch that one next.
- 7:04SPEAKER_00: I'll see you there.
