- 0:01Speaker 1: Hello, and welcome to Radio Eye's Children's Story Hour. As
- 0:06a reminder, RADIOI is a reading service intended for people
- 0:11who are blind or have other disabilities that make it
- 0:15difficult to read printed material. Your reader today is Patty. Today,
- 0:23we're going to be reading from several books about April first. Now,
- 0:30that day some people call April Fool's Day, So we're
- 0:36going to start with the book entitled April Fool Watch
- 0:42Out at School. The author of the book is Diane
- 0:47de Groat. It was published by Harper Collins Publishers in
- 0:53two thousand and nine. From the inside cover, it's April
- 1:00Fool's Day and Gilbert is looking forward to playing tricks
- 1:05on his friends. Unfortunately, he's the one getting tricked by
- 1:11everyone else, including Missus Bird. But the worst prankster is Lewis,
- 1:19the bully. In the end, Gilbert out wits Lewis with
- 1:25the best trick of all. So now let's read April
- 1:31Fool Watch Out at School. Gilbert woke up and looked
- 1:38at the calendar. It was April first, April Fool's Day.
- 1:44He hopped out of bed and started filling his backpack
- 1:48with tricks to play on his friends. His sister, Lola
- 1:53peeked in the door and said knock, knock. Gilbert answered,
- 1:57who's there, April fool? Lola shouted. Gilbert laughed and explained,
- 2:04you're supposed to play a trick on someone, not tell jokes.
- 2:08Oh okay, oh, Lola said, do a trick on me.
- 2:12But Gilbert didn't have time to play tricks on his
- 2:15little sister. He was already out the door. Gilbert met
- 2:21Patty on the corner as they walked to school. Patty
- 2:26suddenly said, watch out, Gilbert, your shoes untied. Gilbert stopped
- 2:33to tie his shoe, but it was already tied. Gotcha,
- 2:37Patty said, April fool. Gilbert laughed he couldn't wait to
- 2:42try that trick on someone else. Principal Pug smiled and
- 2:48waved when he saw them moving toward the school. Morning Good,
- 2:55he said, day, nice to have. He was talking back.
- 3:01The bell rang and Patty said to Gilbert, up hurry.
- 3:05Let's missus. Bird was not smiling or waving. She said,
- 3:12put away your tricks so we can get started with
- 3:14our reading lesson. Gilbert, please start on page ten. Gilbert
- 3:21stood up and read out loud, where is my book?
- 3:26Sam asked, I need it now. Missus Bird stopped him
- 3:30and said, well, when someone reads out loud, it would
- 3:34be nice to know where the punctuation marks are. Then
- 3:39she said, here's an idea. When you come to a period,
- 3:44say pomp. When you see quotation marks, say put. A
- 3:50question mark can be humph, and the exclamation point is boing.
- 3:56Try it. Gilbert took a deep breath and started over,
- 4:02phe where is my book? Huh h h. Sam asked, pop,
- 4:10I need it now, boeing. Gilbert said this is hard,
- 4:17Lewis said, and it sure is funny boeing. Everyone laughed.
- 4:23Missus Bird laughed too, and said, thank you for being
- 4:26such a good sport, Gilbert April fool. Gilbert sat down
- 4:31and made a loud mrrh sound in his seat. That
- 4:36wasn't me, he cried. Somebody put a whoopee cushion there, gotcha,
- 4:42Louis said. They finished their reading silently, but Gilbert kept
- 4:49thinking pop and boying every time he saw a period
- 4:54or an exclamation point. He also kept thinking about how
- 4:59he could play a tree on Louis. He had hot
- 5:03spicy gum in his pocket, so he turned to Louis
- 5:07and asked, would you like a piece of gum, Louis,
- 5:11No way, Lewis said. Later, Gilbert put a plastic spider
- 5:17on Louis's desk when he wasn't looking. This is so fake,
- 5:24Louis said when he handed it back. Then he slapped
- 5:27Gilbert on the back and said, your tricks are the worst.
- 5:33But when Gilbert wasn't giving up, he still had a
- 5:37few more tricks up his sleeve. He also had a
- 5:41sign on his back that said I smell no wonder.
- 5:46Everyone was snickering. As he walked to the cafeteria, Louis,
- 5:53Gilbert grumbled. Before he ate. Gilbert first checked his seat
- 6:00for a whoopie cushion. There was none, so he sat
- 6:03down and opened his lunch box. Suddenly, he jumped out
- 6:07of his seat and yelled, ah, there was a worm
- 6:11in his apple. It's just a gummy worm, Patty said,
- 6:17And look there's a note. The note said April fool.
- 6:22It was signed mother. Gilbert couldn't believe it, even his
- 6:28mother had tricked him at recess. Frank said, watch out, Gilbert,
- 6:35there's a bee on your head. Gilbert swatted at his
- 6:38head while Frank laughed and said, April fool. Margaret said,
- 6:45watch out, Gilbert, your shoes untied. Gilbert bent to tie
- 6:49his shoe. Made you look, Margaret said. Gilbert sighed. He
- 6:55couldn't believe that he had fallen for that trick twice
- 6:59in one day. Then Philip shouted, watch out, Gilbert. But
- 7:06Gilbert wasn't going to get tricked again. He said, I'm not.
- 7:10But before he could finish, a kickball smacked him on
- 7:14the head. I told you to watch out, Philip said,
- 7:18I thought it was another trick. Gilbert groaned as he
- 7:22rubbed his head. This is the worst April Fool's Day ever.
- 7:26Everybody's playing tricks on me. But I can't trick anyone.
- 7:31I told you your tricks were bad. Lewis laughed, you'll
- 7:35never trick anyone. Gilbert said, that's what you think, Louis.
- 7:41I have one more trick I've been saving just for you.
- 7:45Louis laughed again and said what is it. I'm not
- 7:50telling you. You'll have to wait and see it. Gilbert
- 7:54whispered to Patty what his trick was. Patty said loudly,
- 8:00you're right, Gilbert, that's the best trick ever. Louis snorted
- 8:05and said, you'll never April fool me. As they walked
- 8:11back into the classroom, Gilbert said, oh, Louis, let me
- 8:15hold that door for you. Louis asked, is this your trick? No,
- 8:21said Gilbert. He held the door open and Louis walked
- 8:25through very quickly. During spelling, Louis couldn't find his eraser.
- 8:32Gilbert said, here, Louis, you can borrow mine. Louis looked
- 8:37at the eraser and said, is this a trick? No,
- 8:42Gilbert said, but Louis inspected that eraser very carefully before
- 8:48he used it. When they went to the art table,
- 8:52Gilbert pulled out a chair and said, here you go, Louis,
- 8:56have a seat. Louis looked at the chair and said
- 9:00it's a trick, right, No, Gilbert said, but Louis checked
- 9:06the chair very carefully for a whoopie cushion before he
- 9:09sat down. When Lewis got up to clean his brush,
- 9:14Gilbert said, be careful, Louis, your shoe is untied. Ah.
- 9:19Lewis said, I'm not falling for that old trick. But
- 9:23his shoe was untied, and Lewis did fall when he
- 9:27stepped on the lace. Everyone laughed, I told you it
- 9:32was untied. Gilbert said, I thought it was your trick,
- 9:37Louis said, tying his shoe. No, Gilbert said, my trick
- 9:42is much better than that. During quiet time, Gilbert brought
- 9:48a book to Lewis and said, I think you should
- 9:52read this, Lewis. I really liked it. Lewis wouldn't take
- 9:56the book. He said, is it a fake book? Is
- 10:00it glued shut? Is it gonna squirt at me when
- 10:03I open it? No? Gilbert said, it's just really good book.
- 10:10Louis took the book, but he couldn't concentrate on the story.
- 10:13He kept looking over his shoulder to see where Gilbert was.
- 10:19Louis was so busy watching out for Gilbert's trick he
- 10:23didn't see Kenny put a fake spider on his desk.
- 10:27Louis screamed when he saw it. Gotcha, Kenny said, And
- 10:33when Patty told Louis his shoe was untied, he bent
- 10:36to tie it. Gotcha. Patty laughed, And when Louis sat
- 10:42on his own, whoopye cushion and Margaret said gotcha. Everyone laughed.
- 10:48When the bell rang, Louis finally shouted, I give up, Gilbert,
- 10:54I can't stand it anymore. Do your trick already. Gilbert's
- 11:00smiled and said, there isn't any trick, Lewis, I just
- 11:05made you think there was. You got April fooled? Gotcha? Okay,
- 11:16now let's read another one. This book is called Winnie
- 11:19the Pooh's Silly Day. The author is Bruce Tulkington and
- 11:25the illustrator is Robin Cuddy. This book was published by
- 11:30Disney Press in nineteen ninety six. Rabbit had called a meeting.
- 11:38Everyone in the hundred Acre Wood knew that Rabbit didn't
- 11:42call meetings unless something very significant was afoot. To Rabbit,
- 11:49meetings were as important as gravy was to mash potatoes
- 11:52or honey was to a certain bear of very short
- 11:55leg who was at that very moment stepping his to
- 12:00rabbits as quickly as those very short legs would allow.
- 12:05Running just as quickly toward the meeting was a quite
- 12:10different direction, and on legs even shorter than Pooh Bear's
- 12:15was Pooh's good friend Piglet, and Eeyor, carrying his tail
- 12:21in his mouth so as not to lose it in
- 12:24his hurry, was galloping so rapidly to the gathering from
- 12:29yet another direction that his back legs would occasionally out
- 12:34distance his front ones, and the donkey would suddenly find
- 12:39himself running backwards. He would then have to stop and
- 12:43get himself sorted out before his frantic journey could continue.
- 12:49Gopher was scurrying so fast through his tunnels in order
- 12:54to reach the meeting place on time that the trees
- 12:57above ground quaked jet as he jostled their roots, and
- 13:02passing and high above those trembling tree tops, Tigger tore
- 13:07toward the meeting in a series of tremendous bounces. Meanwhile, Rabbit,
- 13:15at whose house the meeting was to take place, couldn't
- 13:19contain his excitement and was scampering through the woods toward
- 13:22the others to make sure they were all on their
- 13:24way and would not be late. As a result of
- 13:29all this hurrying, scurrying, scampering, galloping and bouncing, the friends
- 13:35not only were on time for the meeting, but were
- 13:38even early. Everyone arrived at a particular crossroads at precisely
- 13:45the same moment, all moving too fast to stop, until
- 13:49they tumbled head over heels over one another and wound
- 13:54up in a friendly sort of tangle, with Tigger on
- 13:59top and Gopher on the bottom, while Eore's tail drifted
- 14:04down to lay limply across his muzzle. The illustration here
- 14:10shows all the animals in a big pile on the ground.
- 14:15Winnie the Pooh is wearing his red shirt as he
- 14:18always does, and all the animals are on top of
- 14:21each other where they've run into each other at that
- 14:24gathering place, and right on top is the orange tiger
- 14:29named Tigger. Continuing, I suppose sniffed Rabbit after they all
- 14:37had untangled themselves and politely dusted off one another's dusty places,
- 14:43that we can call the meeting to order right here
- 14:46and now, so Pooh Bear can get on with his assignment.
- 14:51Pooh's ears perked up in surprise, a signment. I'm not
- 14:58very good at making signs, you know. I'm never quite
- 15:01sure I'm using the certain letter that isn't as good
- 15:05as using one of the others, And there are so
- 15:09very many to choose from it's quite confusing. Rabert pulled
- 15:14his ears down as if he were going to tie
- 15:16them in a bow beneath his chin. This has nothing
- 15:20to do with making signs, Pooh Bear, he said. It
- 15:24has to do with foolishness, which is why we need
- 15:28your help. Rabbit looked down at Pooh and said, did
- 15:32you realize that today is April Fool's Day? Of course,
- 15:39laughed Pooh, delighted to know the right answer. For a change,
- 15:44It's the one day of the year you can look
- 15:47like a fool and not feel unhappy about it. Well,
- 15:54I suggest that this year we not be fooled, sniffled Rat,
- 16:00looking very determined. Might be nice for a change, said Tigger,
- 16:05with a grin. We certainly do a stuperendous job of
- 16:10looking pretty silly the rest of the year. You can
- 16:15say that again, agreed Eor. But to day is someone
- 16:19else's turn by dingy cackled Gopher really asked Pooh, whose
- 16:26turn is it? I think Rabbit means he wants us
- 16:32to fool the April fool before he fools us. Piglet
- 16:39whispered into Pooh's ear. No fooling, Pooh exclaimed, in sudden excitement.
- 16:46You don't think that would be impolite, do you, Pooh
- 16:49mumbled eero eyor I mean it being this day and
- 16:53all my goodness, No, laughed Pooh, who would enjoy being
- 16:59fooled more than the April fool, especially on April Fool's Day?
- 17:06Pooh leaned close to his friends and whispered, how are
- 17:09we going to do it? Rabbit whispered back, You're going
- 17:15to find the April Fool and bring him to my house,
- 17:20I am asked Pooh in amazement. But be careful, Pooh
- 17:25warned Piglet, giving his friend's hand a tight squeeze. I've
- 17:29heard that the April Fool can make can look like
- 17:34anybody he can, gasped Pooh, absolutely whistled Gopher, that's how
- 17:41he fools. You don't worry, Pooh boy, Tigger assured Pooh
- 17:46with a slap on his back. You'll find him. Nobody
- 17:50knows more about foolishness than you do. As the others
- 17:56hurried off to Rabbit's house to prepare their surprise for
- 18:00the April Fool, who scratched his head furiously with both hands,
- 18:07it didn't help. He hadn't the faintest idea of where
- 18:12to start looking for the April Fool, or what to
- 18:16do with him if he found it. But it always
- 18:20seemed that the best ideas came when Pooh's head was
- 18:26at its emptiest all at once. Who recalled that fool
- 18:33rhymed with Pool, not one to question sudden inspiration, he
- 18:40wouldn't have known what to ask it anyway. Pooh proceeded
- 18:44immediately to the largest collection of water in the forest,
- 18:49a quiet pond near the river. As Pooh cautiously crossed
- 18:55from one side of this pool to the other on
- 18:59a series of stepping stones, the one that had happened
- 19:03to be a turtle and not a rock, tipped him
- 19:07headfirst into the water. Sitting on the bottom of the pool,
- 19:14Pooh was, needless to say, thoroughly disappointed. There was not
- 19:21a single fool to be found, only fish, who Pooh
- 19:26knew were not the least bit foolish because they spent
- 19:29so very much of their time in schools. So Pooh
- 19:35began to look in places that didn't rhyme with fool.
- 19:41All he found in a cave were some pesky echoes
- 19:45that loved to make fools of people who were not
- 19:48precisely foolish themselves. They were not precisely anything, really, except
- 19:55a lot of noise, and Pooh, who was very well
- 19:58acquainted with the likes of rabbit and e or an owl,
- 20:02knew that a lot of noise didn't make one foolish
- 20:05most of the time. And the bats that all this
- 20:10noise awakened had any interest in fools, only in chasing
- 20:15Pooh away so they could go back to sleep. Pooh
- 20:18managed to escape by plunging back into the pool and
- 20:22sitting on the bottom until those flying back grumps returned
- 20:26to their napping, And when Pooh poked his nose into
- 20:32a certain large hollow tree, he was suddenly swamped by
- 20:39an avalanche of acorns left over from a squirrel's winter storage.
- 20:45Slipping and sliding as the nuts rolled treacherously under his feet,
- 20:50Poo suddenly found himself sitting down hard in the pool. Again.
- 20:58Exhausted and damp, Pooh scrunched his face up into a
- 21:04painful frown because he knew he had some thinking to do,
- 21:09and that it wouldn't happen unless his face was pushed
- 21:13into the correct shape for it to take place. Pooh
- 21:18was positive his friends were right, and thinking that he
- 21:22could find the April fool, because foolishness was, after all,
- 21:29something with which he had a great deal of experience.
- 21:34Besides that, he couldn't remember his friends ever being wrong.
- 21:39He also couldn't remember what he'd even had for breakfast,
- 21:44but that didn't matter, because it was time to get
- 21:48to the bottom of things, which was why he'd sat
- 21:51down in the first place. Pooh sighed and unscrewed his face.
- 21:57Perhaps I should go to Rabbit's house and ask for help,
- 22:01he said to himself, But he immediately shook his head. No,
- 22:05that would be foolish. They're busy getting ready to fool
- 22:09the April fool. All at once, Pooh sat up straight
- 22:14and smile lit up his face. If it's foolish to
- 22:19go to Rabbit's pool, exclaimed, then that's where the April
- 22:24fool must be. Poo jumped to his feet and waited
- 22:28to shore. And I'm sure to be right, because if
- 22:32I do say so myself, that's a pretty foolish idea,
- 22:37so foolish in fact, I don't even know what I'm
- 22:40talking about. Without wasting another moment, Pooh sat off as
- 22:45fast as his dripping legs would carry him. At Rabbit's house,
- 22:50everyone was ready for the arrival of the April fool.
- 22:54Rabbit had set a huge bucket of water over his
- 22:57front door to spill onto the fool's head when he entered.
- 23:02Piglet was nearby with a very small, yet very tasteful
- 23:06cream pie he'd made from his favorite recipe to toss
- 23:11into the fool's face. Off to one side stood Tigger
- 23:16with a huge pepper shaker to sprinkle on the fool's
- 23:20nose and make him sneeze. The small rag rug and
- 23:24the entryway was clamped firmly in Eore's mouth to be
- 23:29yanked out from under the fool's feet. Finally, Gopher was
- 23:34prepared to spill a bag of fluffy feathers that would
- 23:38cling to the damp fool and cause him to resemble
- 23:41a giant chicken. The gang was ready for everything, except
- 23:46for what happened next. The front door flew open, and
- 23:52there stood Winnie the Boo, shouting April fall at the
- 23:56top of his voice. The horrified rabbit tried to save
- 24:01Pooh from the falling bucket of water, but succeeded only
- 24:06in getting it jammed over his own head, which caused
- 24:10him to stumble about blindly. He bumped into Tigger, who
- 24:15staggered backward and sat in Piglet's pie, accidentally sprinkling his
- 24:22pepper into Eore's nose. Eyor, still hanging on to the rug,
- 24:28emitted such a powerful sneeze that it propelled him backward
- 24:32into Gopher, who spilled his feathers all over Piglet as
- 24:37the rug jerked out from under Pooh's feet and set
- 24:41the bear down in the entryway with a loud thump.
- 24:46After a moment of shocked silence, during which the disheveled
- 24:52friends looked at one another in amazement, who finally managed
- 24:56to blurt out, I was right, the April the fool
- 25:00is here. Then he looked down at his still dripping shirt,
- 25:06but he did seem to be very much out there too.
- 25:11Then the laughter began, and it was quite a while
- 25:16before anyone could speak. Finally, Rabbit, wiping his tears of
- 25:22mirth from his eyes, put his arm around Pooh's shoulders
- 25:26and said, I think you've discovered the fool's secret, Pooh Bear.
- 25:33Pooh managed to look quite pleased with himself and puzzled
- 25:37at the same time. I have what is it? It
- 25:41seems the April fool is everywhere, buddy Bear, hooted Tigger,
- 25:47and he looks just like us, and a good thing too,
- 25:51sighed Pooh. Why is that? Pooh Bear demanded Piglet, trying
- 25:55to remove a particularly large feather from his very small
- 26:00all ear, because then we can all laugh with one another,
- 26:06and not at anyone, said Pooh, Or am I being foolish? No, Pooh,
- 26:13said Piglet with a smile, not this time. And the
- 26:17laughter began again, and went on and on for a
- 26:23very long time. And now we have a little time
- 26:28left for a part of a book called Unfunny Bunny,
- 26:31read by Keenan Thompson with Brian Tucker, art by Tony Neil,
- 26:36published by Firewell and Friends in twenty twenty six. Bunny
- 26:41is excited for tomorrow, his ears twitching, his nose tap
- 26:45as he steps out his clothes, brushes his teeth, and
- 26:48hops into bed. Tomorrow is Bunny's first day of school,
- 26:52and everything's going to be perfect. The next morning, Bunny
- 26:56springs out of bed and starts trying on different persons
- 27:01the way other kids try on different outfits. I'm a
- 27:04cool bunny. No, I'm a sporty bunny. No, I'm a
- 27:11funny bunny. Boom. Bunny confidently heads to school and starts
- 27:19telling jokes to his whole class. It does not go well.
- 27:26What does a shoe like to eat for dinner? Spaghetti
- 27:31and feet balls? Why are socks so good at golf?
- 27:39Because there's always a hole in one. No one is laughing.
- 27:44Bunny starts feeling nervous, but tries again, why should you
- 27:49buy a boat? Many of them are on sale. Bunny
- 27:58frantically calls out joke after joke. What town does milk
- 28:03come from? Milk Walkee? What do you call a snowman
- 28:08at the beach? A poddle? No one is laughing. He
- 28:14keeps trying. What do you get when you cross a
- 28:17goat with a pickle? A dilly billy? What do you
- 28:21get when you cross a goat with a pickle during winter?
- 28:24A chilly dilly billy. What do you get when you
- 28:27cross a goat with a pickle during winter and let
- 28:30it out of its pin? A chilly dilly billy running
- 28:33round willy nilly. Well, that's where we'll stop for today.
- 28:38This concludes the Children's Story Hour. Please join us next
