Latest / Foul Territory / GM Territory: Jim Bowden breaks down the latest trade deadline moves
Transcript
- 0:05Speaker 1: Welcome in a GM territory, everybody, Jim, Let's get right
- 0:09Speaker 1: to it. Luis Garcia Junior has been traded to the
- 0:12Speaker 1: New York Yankees. Break this trade down for us.
- 0:15Speaker 2: Well, the Yankees had to get a bat. They're struggling
- 0:18Speaker 2: with offense, and of course, with both Aaron Judge and
- 0:20Speaker 2: Cody Bellinger on the inter list, with no real timetable
- 0:24Speaker 2: of when they're going to return, they had it get
- 0:26Speaker 2: another bat, and they got a good one in Lewis Garcia.
- 0:30Speaker 2: This guy can flat out rake, as Aaron Boone told
- 0:33Speaker 2: me just moments ago. I mean, this is a hitter
- 0:35Speaker 2: with the Nationals that was hitting two eighty three with
- 0:38Speaker 2: twenty three home runs for Washington, seventy six RBIs. He
- 0:42Speaker 2: had a war of two point three and a one
- 0:44Speaker 2: thirty six ops plus. Now I talked to Aaron Boone
- 0:48Speaker 2: and asked him where Garcia was going to play. He
- 0:51Speaker 2: told me that he was going to platoon at first
- 0:53Speaker 2: base with Paul Goldsmith. I said, okay, where does that
- 0:56Speaker 2: put Ben Rice? And he says he'll catch and d eight.
- 0:59Speaker 2: So Ben Rice who will split his time between catching
- 1:01Speaker 2: and dhing, and then Lewis Garcia and Goldschmidt will platoon
- 1:05Speaker 2: at first base. So that's the plan right now for
- 1:08Speaker 2: the Yankees. As you can see, Lewis Garcia absolutely raking
- 1:12Speaker 2: against right hand pitching. On this graphic, you could see
- 1:15Speaker 2: the nine to nine ops pretty impressive. Now on the
- 1:19Speaker 2: other side, for the Washington Nationals, they get four pitchers
- 1:23Speaker 2: in this deal, all pitching prospects. Let's break them down.
- 1:27Speaker 2: The headliner, according to Paul Taboni, the general manager, Ben
- 1:32Speaker 2: Grabel is the number one prospect they're getting in return,
- 1:35Speaker 2: a right handed pitcher, followed by Jack Siebert. Now there
- 1:39Speaker 2: are some evaluators and publications that actually have Siebert over Grabel,
- 1:43Speaker 2: but the Nats view it as Grabel one, Sieber two.
- 1:46Speaker 2: They also get Iovanni Cruz and Jake Bird. And this
- 1:49Speaker 2: is a deal where you're getting really the quality, the
- 1:54Speaker 2: quantity over the quality, but you get four arms, and
- 1:57Speaker 2: the Nationals really need more pitching. We all know they
- 1:59Speaker 2: have one of the better offenses in baseball, so they're
- 2:02Speaker 2: trying to take some of that offense and turn it
- 2:04Speaker 2: into pick Now, keep in mind, Lewis Garcia only controllable
- 2:08Speaker 2: for one more year, so the Nats all four pitchers
- 2:12Speaker 2: they get are controllable for six more years, So that
- 2:15Speaker 2: had a lot to do with this deal by Washington
- 2:19Speaker 2: knowing they only had one more year of Lewis Garcia
- 2:21Speaker 2: and the way he's swinging the bat, he's going to
- 2:22Speaker 2: be tough to sign long term. So the Yankees get
- 2:26Speaker 2: the bat that they need so desperately. The Nats get
- 2:30Speaker 2: four pitchers, something they obviously with their organization right now needs.
- 2:33Speaker 2: So it should be a deal that works for both sides.
- 2:36Speaker 1: I will give.
- 2:37Speaker 2: A B plus to the Yankees. I'm getting Garcia and
- 2:40Speaker 2: a B to the Washington Nationals on the other side.
- 2:43Speaker 1: Do you think the New York Yankees are done making trades?
- 2:47Speaker 2: Absolutely not. I still think they're looking for a right
- 2:51Speaker 2: editing catcher. I still think they're looking for a right
- 2:53Speaker 2: editing outfielder. I still think they're looking for more bullpen help.
- 2:57Speaker 2: I do not think Brian Cashman is done. I think
- 2:59Speaker 2: he's just getting started in the Bronx. Drake, let's go.
- 3:03Speaker 1: There's been a lot of excitement today in New York.
- 3:06Speaker 1: The New York Mets also traded Freddy Perolta to the
- 3:09Speaker 1: Tampa Bay Rays. Break this trade down for us.
- 3:12Speaker 2: Yeah, So, I mean, first of all, we got to
- 3:14Speaker 2: start with Freddy Parolta going to Tampa Bay. They were
- 3:17Speaker 2: in the mix for Schoogle, they weren't able to get them.
- 3:19Speaker 2: They weren't really to give up their top prospects, so
- 3:22Speaker 2: that really went didn't go anywhere. Freddy Perolta having a
- 3:24Speaker 2: down year for the Mets five wins, nine losses in
- 3:27Speaker 2: the area of four point nine to nine and in fact,
- 3:30Speaker 2: his strikeouts per nine the lowest of his career at
- 3:32Speaker 2: eight point nine, just to put in perspective, last year
- 3:35Speaker 2: was ten to four. His fit right now is four
- 3:37Speaker 2: four five. That's the highest of his career. Last year,
- 3:40Speaker 2: to put in perspective, was three six four. But it
- 3:44Speaker 2: was only a year ago where Peralta finished top five
- 3:47Speaker 2: in the Say Young voting in the National League. In fact,
- 3:49Speaker 2: he finished in fifth place a year ago, and the
- 3:52Speaker 2: Mets just weren't able to get that out of them.
- 3:54Speaker 2: Tampa Bay's pitching room is one of the best in baseball.
- 3:58Speaker 2: They have great pitching coaches, great analytics, Their research and
- 4:02Speaker 2: development department is amazing and if anyone can turn peralt round,
- 4:06Speaker 2: I think it's going to be the Tampa Bay Raised organization.
- 4:08Speaker 2: So they make this deal with the hopes that they
- 4:11Speaker 2: can turn it around and in return. Look, there's a
- 4:14Speaker 2: strong package going the other way for the Mets. Let's
- 4:17Speaker 2: break that down a little bit. Elmian Ptray to me,
- 4:21Speaker 2: is the best player in this deal going the other way.
- 4:24Speaker 2: He's a middle infielder. Probably second base is his best position.
- 4:27Speaker 2: He was a second round pick in twenty twenty four
- 4:30Speaker 2: by Tampa Bay. Right now, he's hitting THREEA. He's got
- 4:33Speaker 2: nineteen doubles, thirty two steals. The league gets caught too much.
- 4:37Speaker 2: I think is the best player in the deal. Other people,
- 4:39Speaker 2: other scouts, have told me they think Aiden Smith is
- 4:42Speaker 2: the best player in the deal. He was a fourth
- 4:44Speaker 2: round pick of the Seattle Mariners a couple of years ago.
- 4:47Speaker 2: Twenty two years old. He's only hitting two O nine
- 4:49Speaker 2: with ten homers. I worry a little bit about the
- 4:52Speaker 2: hit tool with Aiden Smith. That's why I like p
- 4:54Speaker 2: Tray a little bit more. And then finally they get
- 4:57Speaker 2: Gary gail Hill, right handed pitcher. He's made twenty starts
- 5:00Speaker 2: in the minor leagues, seven and three record with a
- 5:03Speaker 2: four four to nine er. What bothers me with him
- 5:06Speaker 2: is he's given up more hits than innings. Pitch in fact,
- 5:08Speaker 2: one hundred and twenty seven hits in one third innings,
- 5:11Speaker 2: but the Mets get three prospects back. They continue to
- 5:14Speaker 2: build up the farm system, and Tampa Bay takes a
- 5:17Speaker 2: chance on Peralta. So New York, New York Baby, Frank Sinatra,
- 5:20Speaker 2: jay Z sing the songs the Mets are selling. The
- 5:24Speaker 2: Yankees are buying, just like we said they would on
- 5:27Speaker 2: GM territory.
- 5:29Speaker 1: We sure did say that, all right, I want to
- 5:31Speaker 1: bring up a couple more players now, Luis Arise, I've been,
- 5:36Speaker 1: you know, seeing a lot of rumors about him. I
- 5:38Speaker 1: think he has you know, four or five legit suitors.
- 5:41Speaker 1: Can you break down these teams fits for me?
- 5:44Speaker 2: Yeah? I mean everything I'm hearing, first of all, is
- 5:47Speaker 2: the Giants asking price is so ridiculous that there is
- 5:51Speaker 2: absolutely no traction anywhere. That's what I keep hearing from
- 5:54Speaker 2: everybody I talk to. That being said, I think there
- 5:57Speaker 2: are a bunch of suitors, and I think, as you
- 5:59Speaker 2: look right here on the graphic, the foremost likely landing
- 6:03Speaker 2: spots at this point are the Philadelphia Phillies, Tampa Bay Rays,
- 6:07Speaker 2: Texas Rangers, in Boston Red Sox. The Yankees were on
- 6:10Speaker 2: this list. We have to take them off after acquiring
- 6:13Speaker 2: Lewis Garcia, so that's not a fit anymore. Phillies really
- 6:16Speaker 2: need more offense. I just don't know where you're going
- 6:18Speaker 2: to play them. A Rise doesn't want to move off
- 6:19Speaker 2: a second base, and of course the Phillies have Bryson
- 6:22Speaker 2: stopped there, so I'm not quite sure how it would work,
- 6:25Speaker 2: but certainly the bat would help the Phillies. Tampa Bay
- 6:28Speaker 2: is looking for more offense, so a Rise could fit there.
- 6:31Speaker 2: Texas Rangers Tray is the one that you kept talking
- 6:34Speaker 2: about as a team that you felt fit really well,
- 6:37Speaker 2: and I think because of the Red Sox deal fell
- 6:40Speaker 2: apart earlier because of the injury to Curtis Mead. I
- 6:44Speaker 2: kind of feel like a Rise would be a good
- 6:46Speaker 2: fit in Boston. I know he's not a right hand
- 6:48Speaker 2: hitter that they're looking for, but if they can't make
- 6:51Speaker 2: a trade for a player like Zach Nato of the Angels,
- 6:54Speaker 2: this would be a nice little pivot. A Rise could
- 6:57Speaker 2: play second base with Durbin at third for Boston and
- 6:59Speaker 2: would give them some more traffic for the middle of
- 7:02Speaker 2: their lineup. So I think any of those teams fit.
- 7:05Speaker 2: But I know one thing everyone tells me, the price
- 7:07Speaker 2: better come down if they expect to move them by
- 7:09Speaker 2: six o'clock Monday.
- 7:11Speaker 1: All right, so the price has a come down for
- 7:13Speaker 1: a rise. What have you heard about Casey Mize and
- 7:16Speaker 1: his price?
- 7:18Speaker 2: Yeah, very interesting. The schoobl trade is done and now
- 7:21Speaker 2: the Tigers are focusing on moving him. Here are the
- 7:23Speaker 2: four teams right here that I keep hearing. The Atlanta
- 7:26Speaker 2: Braves of the team I keep feeling is going to
- 7:28Speaker 2: be the front runner to get Myze. They certainly have
- 7:31Speaker 2: the pitching prospects to make a deal work here, and
- 7:34Speaker 2: I know the president and GM Alexanthopos has been a
- 7:37Speaker 2: big fan of my since he was a free agent.
- 7:39Speaker 2: Or a really good fit there. The Cubs continue to
- 7:42Speaker 2: search for pitching. I do think there's a match there.
- 7:45Speaker 2: I mean, I think guys like Matt Shaw and Kevin
- 7:47Speaker 2: Olcontra certainly are guys that the Cubs could use as
- 7:50Speaker 2: trade bait here, which would make some sense. Milwaukee Brewers,
- 7:55Speaker 2: you know they were in on school. But we'll see
- 7:56Speaker 2: if they can make a run on Mize here and
- 7:58Speaker 2: how much they'd be willing to give up for mis
- 8:00Speaker 2: as a rental. I know it's going to be a
- 8:02Speaker 2: lot less than what they would have been willing to
- 8:04Speaker 2: do for Schoobl And then finally the Padres. Where's aj
- 8:07Speaker 2: Preller been? He's been too quiet this deadline. At some
- 8:10Speaker 2: point we're gonna hear from aj Preller. Perhaps it'll be
- 8:13Speaker 2: for Casey byes deal, I don't know. But the Tigers
- 8:17Speaker 2: they're back on the clock after trading Schoobl.
- 8:20Speaker 1: Yep, Tigers are back on the clock. Something I like
- 8:22Speaker 1: about Ma's going to the Braves is he pitched at
- 8:25Speaker 1: the University of Auburn, so there's some you know, it's
- 8:28Speaker 1: not foreign ground for him. Anyway. This is shaping up
- 8:32Speaker 1: to be an incredible trade deadline or getting breaking news
- 8:35Speaker 1: after breaking news. I'm excited with the next twenty four
- 8:38Speaker 1: hours has in hold for us. Jim. That's all I got,
- 8:42Speaker 1: Choulenge relaxed, were gone,
