- 1:14Speaker 2: I've got an important announcement. There are only a few
- 1:17Speaker 2: more days left to be sure that any last minute
- 1:20Speaker 2: orders from the Meat Eater First Light, FHF, Phelps and
- 1:23Speaker 2: DSD stores arrive on time for Christmas. And in fact,
- 1:27Speaker 2: a Little Birdie by the name of Corey Calkins told
- 1:30Speaker 2: me that our twenty twenty five fucked up old shitters calendars.
- 1:33Speaker 2: That's the fed up old shitters calendars. We'll be back
- 1:36Speaker 2: in stock tomorrow, December thirteenth, so get them before they
- 1:40Speaker 2: are all gone, or before a twenty twenty five calendar
- 1:44Speaker 2: is irrelevant. Brody cal It's great to see you both.
- 1:49Speaker 2: How are we doing today.
- 1:50Speaker 1: I don't know that calendars go irrelevant because I think
- 1:53Speaker 1: most folks are just ad them for the photos at
- 1:55Speaker 1: this point.
- 1:56Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:57Speaker 4: Yeah, And you often walk into our garage and see
- 2:00Speaker 4: a calendar from twenty six years ago.
- 2:02Speaker 3: Exactly.
- 2:02Speaker 2: Yeah, but that's usually you know, big Bucks or pin
- 2:05Speaker 2: up gals.
- 2:06Speaker 3: Not I was going to say, the older they are,
- 2:08Speaker 3: the more lud baby.
- 2:09Speaker 4: If it's a good enough shit or it could stand
- 2:11Speaker 4: the test of time, exactly.
- 2:14Speaker 5: Well.
- 2:14Speaker 1: Uh.
- 2:16Speaker 2: Joining us on the line first today are friends of
- 2:19Speaker 2: the program, Doug Durhan and Pat Dirkin, who are joining
- 2:23Speaker 2: us on day one of Doug's Doe Derby in Wisconsin. Gentlemen,
- 2:28Speaker 2: welcome to the show. It's great to see you both.
- 2:32Speaker 5: Visible.
- 2:32Speaker 2: I see, So what is what's going on with the
- 2:37Speaker 2: Doe Derby there? Doug can you tell us what the
- 2:39Speaker 2: Casanovia doe derby is?
- 2:44Speaker 6: Well, the uh, we're started to take your time.
- 2:47Speaker 1: Doug, I'm sorry said take your time.
- 2:51Speaker 5: Is this thing on?
- 2:53Speaker 3: Yeah, you know it's the same. You don't have the
- 2:55Speaker 3: whole show.
- 2:59Speaker 7: So we started the dough derby a few years ago
- 3:01Speaker 7: as a part of the forty antler list hunt. And
- 3:04Speaker 7: the idea is that we're encouraging people to reduce the
- 3:09Speaker 7: population by taking antler this deer, most of which will
- 3:11Speaker 7: be does of course.
- 3:13Speaker 6: And then the other thing is.
- 3:14Speaker 7: That we're getting them encouraging to get them tested for
- 3:16Speaker 7: CWD if they bring their harvested dough like to in
- 3:22Speaker 7: a trailer over or in our buggy over here that
- 3:25Speaker 7: we got the fine cut the head off submitted for
- 3:30Speaker 7: CWD testing. Inside this thing will be a couple of
- 3:33Speaker 7: tickets that they'll fill out. And through the support of
- 3:36Speaker 7: generous sponsors like like meat Eater and Vortex and can
- 3:41Speaker 7: Am and and but there's a whole list, we have
- 3:44Speaker 7: a bunch of prizes that we give away, so's we're
- 3:46Speaker 7: incentivizing people to h to harvest and get tested for CWD.
- 3:52Speaker 6: And then the other thing that we do is we.
- 3:53Speaker 7: Have this party here on Saturday evening with my tall
- 3:57Speaker 7: friend Pat Durkin will be a part of that. And Uh,
- 4:01Speaker 7: it's just a place where hunters gather and we you know,
- 4:04Speaker 7: tell deer stories and kind of some of the old
- 4:06Speaker 7: school stuff that and I used to enjoy a lot
- 4:09Speaker 7: more when we were kids.
- 4:10Speaker 4: Does Pat have all the prizes in those pockets.
- 4:13Speaker 6: On his bed? Like?
- 4:20Speaker 4: I feel like we do a whole segment just going
- 4:22Speaker 4: through Pat's pockets.
- 4:24Speaker 8: Said, I'm kind of kind of surprised you guys haven't
- 4:27Speaker 8: pointed out that for once in my life, I'm standing
- 4:31Speaker 8: taller than Doug.
- 4:32Speaker 2: I figured it was just the angle of the camera,
- 4:35Speaker 2: or is there? Ah? Yeah, very nice. Well how's how's
- 4:43Speaker 2: the hunting been?
- 4:46Speaker 8: I mean, I got this idea by watching the NFL
- 4:49Speaker 8: one year in a pregame. I walked down the field
- 4:52Speaker 8: and saw Bob Costa sending a box. That's not a
- 4:57Speaker 8: bad idea, so I figured stand. I used to Doug,
- 5:00Speaker 8: I looked like a little kid, So I thought today
- 5:03Speaker 8: we'll change things up a little bit and make him
- 5:05Speaker 8: look up at me.
- 5:08Speaker 3: I like it.
- 5:08Speaker 1: So what is the the deer count? And have you
- 5:11Speaker 1: gotten any testing back yet?
- 5:13Speaker 5: Doug?
- 5:15Speaker 9: Uh?
- 5:16Speaker 7: Yeah, we're up to depending on just on the farm
- 5:20Speaker 7: and you know, the properties that I have here, we're
- 5:23Speaker 7: at about twenty five. Unfortunately, the later ones that we
- 5:29Speaker 7: got later in the season, we haven't gotten back yet.
- 5:31Speaker 7: But the unfortunate part is the ones that we got
- 5:34Speaker 7: early in this season, including a nice four year old
- 5:37Speaker 7: buck that I got tested positive. Brock who's holding the
- 5:41Speaker 7: camera here right now, shot a a antlerless buck and
- 5:46Speaker 7: a and it was a year and a half old
- 5:48Speaker 7: I think, and and a two and a half year
- 5:50Speaker 7: old dough and they both tested positive. My nephew Sam
- 5:54Speaker 7: shot a three and a half year old buck and
- 5:56Speaker 7: an older dough when.
- 5:57Speaker 6: They tested positive. So we have five.
- 6:01Speaker 7: That have tested positive out of eleven that we've gotten
- 6:04Speaker 7: back so far.
- 6:06Speaker 3: All right, all right, and then.
- 6:10Speaker 1: Are those your only dough derby submissions the ones in
- 6:14Speaker 1: the canyon there or turned in?
- 6:18Speaker 7: Well, we've got uh. This year, we've expanded, so we
- 6:22Speaker 7: have five different kiosks like this where people can happen,
- 6:27Speaker 7: and the people who are running those kiosks are bringing
- 6:30Speaker 7: the tickets up and it's been really fun because they
- 6:33Speaker 7: people are more you know, it's just more opportunity and
- 6:35Speaker 7: getting more people involved, and I haven't countered them all
- 6:40Speaker 7: up yet, but it looks like we're well over two
- 6:43Speaker 7: hundred and fifty so far.
- 6:45Speaker 3: Wow wow, very cool.
- 6:47Speaker 2: And this is just open to anyone who wants to
- 6:49Speaker 2: participate in the area, is that correct, right?
- 6:52Speaker 7: Anybody who can legally transport a deer, because there's just
- 6:56Speaker 7: all these CWD regulations that we're not going to talk
- 6:59Speaker 7: about unless you really want to. But the CWD regulations
- 7:03Speaker 7: you have to kind of be adjacent, and of course
- 7:07Speaker 7: everybody is sort of adjacent now because of the way
- 7:09Speaker 7: the disease has expanded.
- 7:11Speaker 6: So folks can bring they can bring the head, they
- 7:15Speaker 6: can bring the whole carcascent if they want to. Some
- 7:18Speaker 6: people have just brought the limph notes and you know,
- 7:20Speaker 6: who's gonna lie about something like that.
- 7:22Speaker 7: So, uh, it's been it's been gratifying to see this grow.
- 7:28Speaker 7: I mean, cal you were here the first year and
- 7:30Speaker 7: we had I don't know, you know, less than one
- 7:35Speaker 7: hundred submissions, I think around fifty, and now we're you know,
- 7:38Speaker 7: we're approaching three hundred, so we're excited about that.
- 7:42Speaker 1: Well that's the way these things have to start, you know,
- 7:44Speaker 1: because then everybody who participates win something in the raffle
- 7:48Speaker 1: and word word spent spreads really fast. The other thing
- 7:52Speaker 1: that meat processor that you have up the road. I mean,
- 7:56Speaker 1: Mark Kenyan and I were going to come back just
- 7:58Speaker 1: for the dough Derby, just so I can make have
- 8:02Speaker 1: those guys make more brought worst.
- 8:04Speaker 3: That brought Worst is unbelievaba.
- 8:06Speaker 2: I'll testify. I did get to enjoy some of that
- 8:08Speaker 2: brought Worst and it is spectacular.
- 8:11Speaker 3: Yeah, well that's great.
- 8:13Speaker 7: We're actually enjoying some of those this weekend as well
- 8:16Speaker 7: as a part of our as a part of the party.
- 8:18Speaker 2: So yeah, do you have any idea how many folks
- 8:22Speaker 2: are going to be in attendance at the party.
- 8:26Speaker 7: I would stay somewhere between fifty and one hundred. You
- 8:29Speaker 7: don't have to be present to win, but I will
- 8:32Speaker 7: tell anybody who's who's in the area who might come
- 8:34Speaker 7: to the party. Saturday evening will start at about five
- 8:37Speaker 7: until about eight, that we will have door prizes this
- 8:40Speaker 7: year for only for the people who actually.
- 8:44Speaker 6: Come to the party.
- 8:45Speaker 2: Very nice.
- 8:46Speaker 6: Along with the.
- 8:48Speaker 7: We have a Savage access rifle with a word Tech
- 8:51Speaker 7: scope and a Chris Crafted, a Chris Crafted custom sling,
- 8:57Speaker 7: got a big can Am branded YETI cooler seed from
- 9:01Speaker 7: my friends at Hoxy Native Seed Camp. Chef has given
- 9:04Speaker 7: us as they have in previous years. Are really nice
- 9:09Speaker 7: to burner stove. Our friends at Deck sent us one
- 9:15Speaker 7: of their cases to give away some really great prizes.
- 9:20Speaker 7: Binoculars from Vortex, a full set of meat Eater books,
- 9:25Speaker 7: all signed by Steve. And so those are some of
- 9:29Speaker 7: the prizes for the first drawing. And then we'll have
- 9:33Speaker 7: a virtual drawing the first week of January when the entire.
- 9:40Speaker 6: Season is over with. We have a this four day.
- 9:42Speaker 7: Season and then bow hunting continues and then there's a
- 9:47Speaker 7: holiday hunt. So between December fourteenth, hey, between holidays, right
- 9:51Speaker 7: December fourteenth to January first, there's also another twenty.
- 9:58Speaker 6: That's why I have Dirk and here. It keeps me.
- 10:00Speaker 1: Yeah, how much up for the festivities tonight?
- 10:07Speaker 6: We have a pretty good pile over there.
- 10:09Speaker 7: We'll be all right, you know, nobody's gonna get nobody's
- 10:11Speaker 7: gonna get cold.
- 10:13Speaker 6: We'll be able to see the fire from a ways away.
- 10:17Speaker 7: So you know, it's we have it's it's I think
- 10:22Speaker 7: we have brought back some of that enjoyment that people
- 10:24Speaker 7: have of getting together. They don't mind standing out in
- 10:27Speaker 7: the cold, and that's why we have a big fire
- 10:29Speaker 7: right and people have really enjoyed coming to that. The
- 10:34Speaker 7: participation has grown in the dough derby, and you know,
- 10:39Speaker 7: there's a lot of discussion about what CWD is doing,
- 10:44Speaker 7: what populations are doing, areas where people are worried that
- 10:50Speaker 7: their population is being not they're not just seeing sick
- 10:54Speaker 7: beer and killing sick deer, but their population a decline.
- 10:59Speaker 7: That's uh pretty hard to point it in other directions
- 11:03Speaker 7: other than chronic wasting disease.
- 11:06Speaker 1: Yeah, and you've created a safe place, if you will,
- 11:09Speaker 1: for all these big tough folks to come together and
- 11:13Speaker 1: talk about killing does which is something that's very important,
- 11:17Speaker 1: and what they're going to do with the meat, and
- 11:20Speaker 1: then have thoughtful discussions on CWD and and what they're
- 11:25Speaker 1: going to do with all the cool stuff they want.
- 11:27Speaker 1: You're doing the Lord's work.
- 11:28Speaker 7: Doug Well, and it's great to see we're doing what
- 11:32Speaker 7: we can where we're at with what we've got.
- 11:34Speaker 2: And it's great to see that you have the support
- 11:37Speaker 2: of a bunch of different great brands in the industry
- 11:40Speaker 2: behind this all.
- 11:41Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 11:42Speaker 7: It really has been and it's not been, uh, incredibly
- 11:47Speaker 7: difficult to get people to step forward. We've had people
- 11:49Speaker 7: come First Light came forward and gave us the five
- 11:52Speaker 7: hundred dollars gift certific you.
- 11:54Speaker 6: Know for first Light. What a great you know, what
- 11:56Speaker 6: a great thing that is.
- 11:58Speaker 7: And it's really uh, it's been great to see that support.
- 12:04Speaker 6: And here we are, sunning standing in front.
- 12:06Speaker 7: Of the kiosk where we where if people do the
- 12:10Speaker 7: when they come in and do the reporting and whatnot,
- 12:12Speaker 7: I don't.
- 12:12Speaker 6: Think they're not.
- 12:19Speaker 2: It's the opposite of a live well.
- 12:23Speaker 3: And you're not on the dough board yet.
- 12:25Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 12:25Speaker 8: I got to on the on the board so far,
- 12:28Speaker 8: and I tried to impress Doug you know that I
- 12:30Speaker 8: actually know how to remove the lymph nodes. So that's
- 12:34Speaker 8: my contribution is in there, just in a little bag.
- 12:36Speaker 6: They look suspiciously like consoles.
- 12:42Speaker 2: Now, is there any sign of our dear friend Chester
- 12:45Speaker 2: Floyd at this gathering?
- 12:47Speaker 6: He will be here on Saturday, Yeah, for the for
- 12:50Speaker 6: the party. He's bringing his.
- 12:51Speaker 7: Son and he said, I'd like to hunt, but I'll
- 12:54Speaker 7: have a two year old with me. I said, I
- 12:56Speaker 7: think I got a spot for you. I'll put him
- 12:58Speaker 7: up there in that office. I got up on the ridge,
- 13:00Speaker 7: you know.
- 13:01Speaker 2: Yeah, one of Pat's pockets. I was gonna say, you
- 13:05Speaker 2: might save that, uh, save that milk crate for Chester
- 13:09Speaker 2: if we if we end up going back to you,
- 13:13Speaker 2: very good. Well, guys, it's great to see you, and uh,
- 13:17Speaker 2: congratulations on pulling together another great event. And best of
- 13:21Speaker 2: luck to you in the woods out there.
- 13:24Speaker 6: Thanks you guys, all right, thank you very much.
- 13:30Speaker 2: Couple couple solid folks there. Oh yeah, it is time
- 13:35Speaker 2: for Throwback Thursday, where we dig into the photo archives
- 13:39Speaker 2: and take a trip down memory lane with some of
- 13:41Speaker 2: the crew.
- 13:42Speaker 9: Go back on a Thursday, Mon, Stephen Brody, take me
- 13:48Speaker 9: back to nineteen seventy four. Did I mentioned Stephen Brody?
- 13:57Speaker 6: Our old as?
- 14:03Speaker 5: I love it?
- 14:04Speaker 2: Oh, that's delightful, Phil, Thank you, really good.
- 14:07Speaker 3: That's really good Phil.
- 14:09Speaker 1: Oh the memories, the memories, the pictures here.
- 14:12Speaker 2: Yeah, let's get those pictures up.
- 14:16Speaker 1: I was personally shocked that people had digitized memories. I
- 14:21Speaker 1: thought that was the whole point of like going back
- 14:23Speaker 1: and finding the polaroids.
- 14:27Speaker 2: Well, the new memories.
- 14:29Speaker 3: Look at that cute dog. What's that dog?
- 14:31Speaker 2: That dog? That dog is named Jack also known as
- 14:35Speaker 2: Jack Bishkins. He in that photo. God, he must have
- 14:40Speaker 2: been maybe two years old. He lived to the ripe
- 14:42Speaker 2: old age of seventeen. Whoa, and he turned into quite
- 14:45Speaker 2: an asshole in.
- 14:48Speaker 4: Speaking of being old though, Like you can tell that
- 14:51Speaker 4: Randall is not old because this picture doesn't look old.
- 14:54Speaker 5: It's like like high quality. You know that you're mentioned.
- 14:57Speaker 2: Yeah, this is this is the early day of digital cameras.
- 15:02Speaker 2: I don't know how old I am in that photo.
- 15:04Speaker 2: Maybe nineteen twenty. That's my first buck, first white tailed
- 15:11Speaker 2: deer buck. I'm sitting there in Kentucky and I got
- 15:15Speaker 2: that I were sitting in the bed of black Thunder.
- 15:18Speaker 2: It's a nineteen ninety seven Ford Ranger with an orange
- 15:21Speaker 2: racing stripe on the side of it. Just just a
- 15:26Speaker 2: you know, great memory with a good dog, good firearm.
- 15:30Speaker 2: That is a Marlin Model eighteen ninety five g guide
- 15:34Speaker 2: gun chambered in forty five seventy oh wild. Yeah, I
- 15:37Speaker 2: believe I was shooting a Remington cor locked the four
- 15:41Speaker 2: h five grand soft point and.
- 15:44Speaker 1: Yeah, effective range of about one hundred yards.
- 15:47Speaker 2: Yeah. Actually this buck I shot him, he was he
- 15:51Speaker 2: was actually locked up with a smaller.
- 15:53Speaker 5: Buck and made that smaller bucks day.
- 15:56Speaker 2: Yeah, I brought an end to their exciting fest.
- 16:00Speaker 5: What did that smaller buck do after you shot the
- 16:02Speaker 5: big one.
- 16:03Speaker 2: It's all it's all a blur. It's all a blur.
- 16:06Speaker 2: But I shot him out of a homemade little crotch
- 16:11Speaker 2: seat made out of some leftover planks of wood and.
- 16:15Speaker 3: Two by fours, right as in the crotch of the tree.
- 16:17Speaker 2: Crouched the tree. Indeed, and then the following year I
- 16:20Speaker 2: shot another ten point out of that same crotch with
- 16:25Speaker 2: that same rifle. So some of my early formative memories
- 16:28Speaker 2: there still got the rifle. I don't great big mistake
- 16:33Speaker 2: on my part.
- 16:34Speaker 1: When I first looked at this, I thought, you're there
- 16:37Speaker 1: is a cemetery as the back dry That's.
- 16:39Speaker 5: What I thought, excited to hear.
- 16:40Speaker 2: No, it's an old Uh. It's an old well pump
- 16:44Speaker 2: with like a crank handle at the Lewis family farm. Oh,
- 16:48Speaker 2: here's another one. This is me in maybe two thousand
- 16:53Speaker 2: and ten eleven with a couple of berbot at the
- 16:58Speaker 2: end of a long summer working in the last where
- 17:00Speaker 2: I have obviously lost my mind.
- 17:05Speaker 1: Do they call him Burbot in Alaska? Or was there
- 17:07Speaker 1: were there any other names for him?
- 17:09Speaker 10: Uh?
- 17:09Speaker 2: The guys I was with called him Burbot.
- 17:12Speaker 5: I think some people call him cusk up there.
- 17:15Speaker 3: Oh yeah, I read that.
- 17:16Speaker 5: I think so they got so many different names.
- 17:19Speaker 2: Yes, these are just on set lines and we ran
- 17:22Speaker 2: around in the dark checking lines and then came back
- 17:25Speaker 2: and had a big old.
- 17:26Speaker 5: Cus or loss.
- 17:27Speaker 2: I forget what Herbert fry on my last night up there.
- 17:31Speaker 3: Cool.
- 17:32Speaker 2: So that's me and my amish beard.
- 17:36Speaker 3: Yeah, I should bring that back.
- 17:37Speaker 2: That's a strapping young fellow.
- 17:39Speaker 4: That's the first iteration of the first light suspenders col.
- 17:44Speaker 1: Wool pants, wool union suit. That's a full one piece
- 17:49Speaker 1: union suit underneath, and then wool sweater. Yeah classic yep.
- 17:54Speaker 1: And if if the suspenders were turned the right way out,
- 17:58Speaker 1: they have little skiers on them, but they are no
- 18:02Speaker 1: more because they lost their elasticity a long time ago.
- 18:07Speaker 1: But that's that's my first elk ever.
- 18:12Speaker 3: Right there. Yeah.
- 18:13Speaker 2: How old were you in that photo?
- 18:16Speaker 3: It was high school, probably a sophomore year.
- 18:25Speaker 2: I would think he grew up.
- 18:26Speaker 5: In Montana, right, yep. Did they not have an orange
- 18:29Speaker 5: law back then?
- 18:30Speaker 3: They did?
- 18:31Speaker 1: So this this, this is like a manufactured photo.
- 18:34Speaker 5: I got a lot of people take the orange off
- 18:36Speaker 5: for the photo.
- 18:37Speaker 1: Yeah, which I don't. Is never something like I've made
- 18:40Speaker 1: a point of But I was out with my hunting
- 18:46Speaker 1: mentor my my outfitter buddy, the guy learned everything from
- 18:52Speaker 1: and my dad and we and we were it was like,
- 18:54Speaker 1: you know, a paid hunt. So there were clients in camp,
- 18:58Speaker 1: which was also like a father son and uh it
- 19:03Speaker 1: was just rainy, crappy, very typical western Montana weather, dreary.
- 19:10Speaker 1: Not a lot happened, and we hiked tired all week
- 19:14Speaker 1: and nothing was happening. And as we were packing up
- 19:17Speaker 1: at the end of that week, the outfitter was like, Pard,
- 19:22Speaker 1: we got this. Why don't you take one more walk?
- 19:25Speaker 1: And so I did, and was in Hunter's orange and
- 19:30Speaker 1: had a totally different rifle than what's pictured here. If
- 19:36Speaker 1: you look close as a left handed seven mmg you know,
- 19:42Speaker 1: and you may may know that I would have nothing
- 19:44Speaker 1: to do with the seven mm.
- 19:47Speaker 3: Right or left handed. And uh.
- 19:50Speaker 1: Yeah, walked walked in and looked down into this cut
- 19:54Speaker 1: and there was a cow and a calf feeding there
- 19:55Speaker 1: and it.
- 19:57Speaker 3: Was all by myself.
- 19:58Speaker 1: First, OULC was like, oh my god, this is really happening,
- 20:01Speaker 1: and tried to talk myself out of it and all
- 20:03Speaker 1: the things and lay down and actually made a Texas
- 20:09Speaker 1: heart shot on this cow as she was going out
- 20:11Speaker 1: of sight, so shot her right at the base of
- 20:16Speaker 1: the spine, and that bullet went in, kicked off her
- 20:22Speaker 1: spine and went down through her heart and outer chest.
- 20:28Speaker 2: Textbook.
- 20:28Speaker 1: Yeah, didn't didn't hit a stitch of meat. It was
- 20:30Speaker 1: like the most crazy shot ever. But you know, as
- 20:34Speaker 1: you know, really just a kid cow had a calf.
- 20:37Speaker 1: I was like, oh my god, somebody else could get
- 20:40Speaker 1: this this calf. And so I ran back to camp
- 20:44Speaker 1: and I was able to take the other father and
- 20:48Speaker 1: son in there, and they shot. The son of the
- 20:52Speaker 1: two shot the calf, and so they got to go
- 20:54Speaker 1: home with some meat. And Yeah, it was a you know, know,
- 21:00Speaker 1: a conflicting young man experience, right of like cow and
- 21:07Speaker 1: a calf and all, you know, but first elk, Yeah,
- 21:11Speaker 1: and then and then they were like, you got to
- 21:12Speaker 1: get a picture of that thing.
- 21:15Speaker 3: That's an antelope.
- 21:16Speaker 2: Another mustacheless photo, we do. I did see someone in
- 21:19Speaker 2: the chat.
- 21:20Speaker 10: Uh.
- 21:21Speaker 2: There was some question about when you started growing at
- 21:24Speaker 2: your mustache, and then some question about when you started
- 21:26Speaker 2: losing your hair. So because of the hat in the
- 21:29Speaker 2: previous photos, so here clearly you do have a full
- 21:32Speaker 2: healthy head.
- 21:33Speaker 1: Yeah, I rocked a lot of hair. But you know,
- 21:36Speaker 1: I think it was always on the way out.
- 21:38Speaker 6: It was.
- 21:38Speaker 1: It was fleeting, but I made up for it in
- 21:41Speaker 1: the volume that I could grow around the deep pits.
- 21:45Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 21:47Speaker 1: I don't even know remember what happened here with this antelope.
- 21:51Speaker 3: But that's Ruger M. Seventy seven and eighty all.
- 21:55Speaker 5: That I had. That rifle, it's a good rifle.
- 21:56Speaker 3: It is a good rifle. Yeah. That paddle stock, yes
- 22:02Speaker 3: it did. Yeah, did I tell yeah?
- 22:04Speaker 1: Yeah, the you know, the full weatherized stainless steel. Yeah,
- 22:11Speaker 1: I cannot remember. I think my dad must have killed
- 22:14Speaker 1: this buck. I was guiding at this point and Dad
- 22:18Speaker 1: came out to camp.
- 22:20Speaker 3: So I was guiding for the.
- 22:21Speaker 1: Old outfitter and uh yeah, Dad, Dad, that's how that's
- 22:25Speaker 1: those Those are the photos we used to take back then.
- 22:29Speaker 1: Primary focus was on getting things gutted fast. And that
- 22:37Speaker 1: is still my biggest white tail buck to day.
- 22:41Speaker 3: This is.
- 22:44Speaker 1: Other than antelope. This is the only shoulder mount animal
- 22:48Speaker 1: that I have. And Randall has actually got to see
- 22:51Speaker 1: this shoulder mount in person because it's hanging in my
- 22:54Speaker 1: buddy's cabin in Augusta.
- 22:56Speaker 2: It's impressive.
- 22:57Speaker 5: Yep, oh, there you is.
- 23:02Speaker 4: I only sent phill one picture. I didn't know we
- 23:05Speaker 4: were supposed to send multiples in. But anyway, that's me
- 23:08Speaker 4: when I was probably I was probably ten or eleven.
- 23:11Speaker 4: That's northwestern Pennsylvania on Elk Creek, which is a Lake
- 23:14Speaker 4: Erie tributary. And back when, back when I was that age,
- 23:21Speaker 4: those lake Erie streams used to get They used to
- 23:24Speaker 4: have an artificial man made run of cohos chanook and steelhead,
- 23:30Speaker 4: so you get all three in the streams in the
- 23:32Speaker 4: fall for.
- 23:33Speaker 5: A short period of time.
- 23:34Speaker 4: Anyway, when it started raining in the fall, and that's
- 23:37Speaker 4: me working over a steelhead with a with a zeb
- 23:41Speaker 4: coo reel, probably a zebco rod reel combo.
- 23:46Speaker 5: Yeah, I landed that thing and I was like the
- 23:48Speaker 5: first big fish I ever landed.
- 23:51Speaker 3: It looks like you have overboots on.
- 23:53Speaker 4: I do like what they call us, think galoshes, no waiters.
- 23:59Speaker 5: My dad was cheap skate back then.
- 24:02Speaker 4: So yeah, it's like you go in as deep as
- 24:05Speaker 4: those boots and no deeper area.
- 24:06Speaker 2: You're getting wet.
- 24:07Speaker 4: But they're like those streams are weird because they're all
- 24:11Speaker 4: shale bottom streams, so it's like a lot of it
- 24:14Speaker 4: shallow and then there's like one deep because so you.
- 24:16Speaker 3: Could, so they'll run up and sit in that bucket.
- 24:19Speaker 4: Yeah, yeah, so yeah. Man, I've always loved that picture
- 24:24Speaker 4: because I'm really reefing on that fish and I landed it.
- 24:28Speaker 4: It's good times back then.
- 24:29Speaker 2: Yeah, and whoever colorized it after the fact from the
- 24:32Speaker 2: original black and white a really nice job. I had
- 24:38Speaker 2: to get one of those in.
- 24:39Speaker 5: Oh yeah, Well that's.
- 24:43Speaker 2: It for Throwback Thursday. Our next segment is One Minute Fishing.
- 24:47Speaker 2: Do I feel lucky?
- 24:49Speaker 5: We'll do.
- 24:50Speaker 2: You go ahead, make my cast. One Minute Fishing is
- 24:57Speaker 2: where we go live to someone who's fishing and they
- 25:00Speaker 2: have one minute to catch a fish, and if they're successful,
- 25:03Speaker 2: we'll make a five hundred dollars donation to a conservation group.
- 25:07Speaker 2: This week, our angler is Kyle Liibarger, who's at Wheeler
- 25:11Speaker 2: Lake on the Tennessee River in Alabama fishing for crappie.
- 25:15Speaker 2: Kyle is the founder of the Native Habitat Project, and
- 25:18Speaker 2: today he is fishing for a donation to Conservation Fisheries, Inc.
- 25:22Speaker 2: A Knoxville, Tennessee based nonprofit dedicated to conserving the unique
- 25:26Speaker 2: aquatic ecosystems of the Southeast. Kyle, Welcome to the show.
- 25:32Speaker 9: How's it going.
- 25:33Speaker 2: We're doing very well, sir. Welcome to One Minute Fishing.
- 25:38Speaker 2: Have you been fishing? Have you pre fished this spot
- 25:42Speaker 2: this morning?
- 25:43Speaker 11: Yeah?
- 25:43Speaker 10: I have a called about eight or nine keeper crappie
- 25:47Speaker 10: and probably twenty twenty five in total this morning, so promised.
- 25:53Speaker 2: This sounds like a very promising start. We've been on
- 25:55Speaker 2: a bit of a dry spell here, and I think
- 25:58Speaker 2: that's understating it. So were eager to have someone in
- 26:02Speaker 2: the hot seat there who knows what they're doing. Well.
- 26:05Speaker 10: This pile, it's a tree top and this thing every
- 26:09Speaker 10: time I come up to it and I catch one
- 26:11Speaker 10: of my first casts usually, so I'm I have a
- 26:14Speaker 10: mess with it in like two hours. I'm hoping hoping
- 26:17Speaker 10: there's some crappy on it.
- 26:18Speaker 2: So oh that's dedication. I love it. What's your h now?
- 26:21Speaker 2: What's your rig there? What are you fishing with today?
- 26:24Speaker 3: Oh?
- 26:24Speaker 10: I got all. I just got a little spinning reel.
- 26:27Speaker 10: It's a fluger and a finwick rod and uh I
- 26:30Speaker 10: got live minutes.
- 26:33Speaker 1: Yeah, live minos, you said, yeah, yeah, so it's kind
- 26:37Speaker 1: of cheating.
- 26:38Speaker 10: Yeah, Well, you know, I have petfish at home in
- 26:42Speaker 10: my pond behind my house, and so if I really
- 26:44Speaker 10: wanted to cheat, I could.
- 26:49Speaker 2: Well, yeah, this seems like a good earnest effort. It
- 26:52Speaker 2: looks like you're out there, uh, getting after it. So well,
- 26:56Speaker 2: your timer and your one minute will begin whenever you
- 27:00Speaker 2: make your first cast, So whenever you're ready, Kyle, take
- 27:03Speaker 2: a shot, all right.
- 27:04Speaker 10: Let's try.
- 27:08Speaker 2: And the timer is going.
- 27:12Speaker 3: Is it on a jighead?
- 27:15Speaker 10: I have a little split shot about six or eight
- 27:18Speaker 10: inches up, so that's the way, and just free lining it. Yeah, yeah,
- 27:24Speaker 10: sometimes I'll use a bobber, but I use a free line.
- 27:30Speaker 2: It's like a beautiful piece of water there.
- 27:33Speaker 10: Yeah, this is Flint Creek. So we we manage a
- 27:38Speaker 10: little grassland at the boat ramp here, but the state
- 27:42Speaker 10: lets us manage.
- 27:43Speaker 2: But twenty seconds twenty seconds on the clock here.
- 27:47Speaker 5: Pressure's on.
- 27:48Speaker 3: M would not want to be you right now.
- 27:57Speaker 2: Ten seconds left here, five seconds.
- 28:05Speaker 1: Time.
- 28:08Speaker 3: I think you just got to go with a ripping
- 28:09Speaker 3: hook set just to see.
- 28:11Speaker 10: Oh oh look does that count?
- 28:15Speaker 1: Oh god?
- 28:18Speaker 2: The old stickfish.
- 28:20Speaker 10: I mean, there is a fish on it.
- 28:21Speaker 11: But there he's got a point. It's no arguing with that.
- 28:26Speaker 2: Well, Kyle, I think next time we need to get
- 28:28Speaker 2: you out there for your first cast of the day.
- 28:30Speaker 2: It sounds like you have a pretty good track record
- 28:32Speaker 2: when you first get in there.
- 28:34Speaker 10: Yeah, yeah, it's a you know, I think you'll need
- 28:36Speaker 10: to change it to like, you know, ninety seconds or something.
- 28:40Speaker 2: We'll we'll put that one past Steve, But he seems
- 28:43Speaker 2: pretty firmly committed to this bit.
- 28:45Speaker 10: So how many of you, how many have caught in
- 28:48Speaker 10: sixty seconds so far?
- 28:51Speaker 11: Pat Dirkin did, But that was I mean, that was
- 28:55Speaker 11: a special circumstance.
- 28:57Speaker 2: Yeah, maybe we should have a meeting about this offline
- 29:00Speaker 2: and rethink the segment. But Kyle, I think you've raised
- 29:03Speaker 2: some very valid points here.
- 29:05Speaker 5: I'm just trying to make myself feel better.
- 29:07Speaker 2: So well, we appreciate you, uh getting out on the
- 29:11Speaker 2: water for us and uh showing us your your spot
- 29:15Speaker 2: there and good luck with the rest of your day. Yeah,
- 29:18Speaker 2: I appreciate y'all.
- 29:19Speaker 10: Give me a chance so I have a good one.
- 29:22Speaker 2: All right, we'll see again here.
- 29:24Speaker 3: I did, like I got a call.
- 29:25Speaker 1: I saw one comment in there where somebody's asking for
- 29:30Speaker 1: current fishing conditions on Henry's Lake, Idaho.
- 29:33Speaker 3: I love that.
- 29:34Speaker 5: Yeah, I love that.
- 29:35Speaker 3: Yeah, that's that's what That's just the kind of community
- 29:38Speaker 3: we need, just.
- 29:38Speaker 2: Throwing it out into the universe.
- 29:40Speaker 11: Yeah, yeah, who knows what the show will become in
- 29:42Speaker 11: a year.
- 29:43Speaker 2: It could just be you know, oh yeah, just a
- 29:45Speaker 2: live fishing report exactly. Yeah, uh, Phil, Why don't we
- 29:49Speaker 2: take a little break here, get some listener feedback. What's
- 29:51Speaker 2: happening in the chat?
- 29:53Speaker 11: Let's do it.
- 29:55Speaker 9: Let's start off with a with a breezy one. I
- 29:57Speaker 9: don't I don't know if how people decorate their homes
- 30:00Speaker 9: for Christmas? If if anybody but Aaron's asking who at
- 30:03Speaker 9: meat Eater has the most festive house?
- 30:06Speaker 3: I know, Phil, put up lights?
- 30:08Speaker 6: I do.
- 30:08Speaker 9: I've got a very basic icicle lights set up with
- 30:11Speaker 9: a wreath on the door, nothing fancy. I've also got
- 30:13Speaker 9: a one story house, so I can't go too crazy.
- 30:15Speaker 9: But yeah, do you guys decorate the exterior of your
- 30:18Speaker 9: homes or the.
- 30:20Speaker 5: Entry of lights on our porch?
- 30:21Speaker 4: We're definitely like in our neighborhood where like the lame
- 30:24Speaker 4: House screach house.
- 30:25Speaker 2: Yeah yeah, Phil, are you gonna play coy? Are you
- 30:28Speaker 2: gonna let people know you've seen the inside of my house?
- 30:32Speaker 11: Well, Randall, I happen to know that you have quite
- 30:36Speaker 11: a tree. We do.
- 30:37Speaker 2: We do have a big home.
- 30:38Speaker 11: You too, it's very impressive.
- 30:41Speaker 1: I'd rather have the lame house from the outside, but
- 30:43Speaker 1: if you come in, there's gonna be a cold beer
- 30:45Speaker 1: and something good to eat.
- 30:47Speaker 2: Well, it's not one or the other. You can have
- 30:50Speaker 2: it all.
- 30:51Speaker 3: Col not with the timeline I have.
- 30:54Speaker 4: Have you seen Cal's garage. He doesn't have any room
- 30:56Speaker 4: for distorre. Yeah, like ornaments in the season.
- 31:01Speaker 2: Might need to hang some new shelves from the ceiling there.
- 31:04Speaker 9: I'm actually I'm curious, you know the answer to this question.
- 31:06Speaker 9: Eric is asking the longest you've gone without punching a tag.
- 31:09Speaker 9: He says this is his second year in a row.
- 31:10Speaker 9: Have you guys had this speaking of dry spells.
- 31:13Speaker 3: M Oh yeah, I mean.
- 31:17Speaker 1: I've definitely definitely been there.
- 31:20Speaker 2: I don't have enough self restraint to not punch tags.
- 31:26Speaker 2: It's been a while since I haven't killed anything. I
- 31:30Speaker 2: will say I went my first six or seven years
- 31:33Speaker 2: of elk hunting without shooting an elk, and I was
- 31:38Speaker 2: on a little streak there, seven years in a row
- 31:41Speaker 2: with bulls, and this year it.
- 31:44Speaker 4: Came to you were way ahead of the odds, So
- 31:46Speaker 4: you can't be too unhappy about.
- 31:48Speaker 2: I'm pretty unhappy, Brodie. Actually, I figure I don't have
- 31:53Speaker 2: that many good elk cunning years left, you know with
- 31:55Speaker 2: my so I just I'm like when am I hurting,
- 32:00Speaker 2: I'll never get to eight.
- 32:01Speaker 4: You're already planning, like for your physical just debilitation to
- 32:06Speaker 4: the point where you can.
- 32:08Speaker 1: Keep after it. Eric, I mean, ill straighten itself out.
- 32:12Speaker 1: But the thing is is, like, man, there are there
- 32:15Speaker 1: are no days of failure in the woods. Like if
- 32:17Speaker 1: you're out there, if you're not killing, you're still learning
- 32:21Speaker 1: a lot more than somebody who's not out there.
- 32:23Speaker 2: Oh yeah, and I will say too a couple of
- 32:25Speaker 2: those Like I can think of one bowl in particular.
- 32:28Speaker 2: We're about to pack up, and we said, before we
- 32:31Speaker 2: take the tpee down, let's just go for a little walk.
- 32:35Speaker 2: You know, we're out here, we might as well put
- 32:37Speaker 2: another fifteen minutes in. And I shot that bowl like
- 32:40Speaker 2: fifteen yards outside of the tepe. I got out there,
- 32:43Speaker 2: put my backpack on, took it off, and shot that thing.
- 32:45Speaker 2: It was just across the canyon. So it can happen
- 32:48Speaker 2: at any time, discouraged.
- 32:50Speaker 5: The more tags you have, the better your chances are.
- 32:54Speaker 2: That's true. We're pretty spoiled here. Yeah, you got all
- 32:57Speaker 2: kinds of seasons to hunt.
- 32:59Speaker 5: Yeah, it's a.
- 32:59Speaker 4: Little different, like when you live in a state where
- 33:01Speaker 4: you might may only have a chance at Like a dear.
- 33:07Speaker 9: Uh Tyler is asking a question for cal Phil Can
- 33:10Speaker 9: you ask Cal why no conservation organization right now is
- 33:13Speaker 9: dedicated to pronghorn? He could be incorrect. I don't know,
- 33:16Speaker 9: so I'm coming to you cal Well.
- 33:18Speaker 1: I mean there's there's a ton of overlap in that space,
- 33:22Speaker 1: as with with everything. Habitat is is king habitat and connectivity,
- 33:29Speaker 1: and so you have like a bunch of groups working
- 33:33Speaker 1: on a new bill that would incentivize the preservation, conservation
- 33:41Speaker 1: and re establishment of grassland ecosystems in North America, which
- 33:46Speaker 1: we're losing at an incredibly alarming rate. Everybody should be
- 33:52Speaker 1: very concerned about this. They may announce the monarch butterfly
- 33:56Speaker 1: being put on the endangered species list, that is like,
- 34:00Speaker 1: if we can save the monarch butterfly, we're going to
- 34:02Speaker 1: be kicking ask for pronghorn.
- 34:04Speaker 3: So there.
- 34:07Speaker 1: I know there's some folks interested in starting up a
- 34:12Speaker 1: antelope prong horn specific organization, but don't feel like that
- 34:19Speaker 1: work isn't being done.
- 34:21Speaker 2: So yeah, I like I do believe there is a
- 34:24Speaker 2: group that has recently incorporated and they're kind of bootstrapping
- 34:28Speaker 2: it and looking for funders. Yeah, and but I don't
- 34:31Speaker 2: know that much about it currently.
- 34:34Speaker 4: I mean MDF, Mule Deer Foundation, Sage Grouse Initiative, like
- 34:39Speaker 4: there's antelope are benefiting, like Cal said, from the work
- 34:43Speaker 4: of other organizations.
- 34:44Speaker 1: So I mean even like RMEF, like Migration Corridor Protection,
- 34:51Speaker 1: you know, yeah.
- 34:52Speaker 4: That migration initiative that focuses on that ho back to
- 34:56Speaker 4: red desert migration, like the antelope use that migration corridor.
- 35:01Speaker 2: So but I will say, anaalope a cool critters, incredibly
- 35:06Speaker 2: cool tasty critters, and there are.
- 35:09Speaker 5: Definitely places where their numbers.
- 35:13Speaker 2: Yeah are and very fun to hunt, and so I
- 35:17Speaker 2: you know, it would be great if a prong horned
- 35:18Speaker 2: specific group could take off and.
- 35:21Speaker 1: Yeah, or or if some of these other orgs were
- 35:24Speaker 1: willing to like really get some dedicated funding in that space,
- 35:29Speaker 1: because there is some really unbelievable inconsistency on on how
- 35:35Speaker 1: those animals are managed at the state level, But there
- 35:39Speaker 1: are some federal and state dollars available for like animal
- 35:44Speaker 1: friendly fencing that that definitely need more help to.
- 35:50Speaker 9: So well, Jared is asking he has a neighbor who
- 35:54Speaker 9: raises breeder bucks and does how will that affect his hunting?
- 35:57Speaker 9: He can see the high fence from his blind. Do
- 35:59Speaker 9: you have any theory res or firsthand experience with this?
- 36:03Speaker 3: I got some.
- 36:04Speaker 1: We used guide on a ranch in Colorado and the
- 36:08Speaker 1: neighboring ranch was a high fence elk operation, and all
- 36:15Speaker 1: the bugling that would come off that high fence place
- 36:18Speaker 1: could could be helpful on the on the other side
- 36:22Speaker 1: of the fence.
- 36:23Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 36:23Speaker 2: I would think if a bunch of those dose are
- 36:26Speaker 2: going into Astris and they're you know, essentially chained up
- 36:30Speaker 2: at the neighbor's place, that yeah, that's some good scent attraction.
- 36:34Speaker 4: But you might want to going back to Doug and Pat.
- 36:39Speaker 4: You also might want to look into the whole c
- 36:41Speaker 4: w H get.
- 36:42Speaker 2: Your dear tested.
- 36:42Speaker 1: Yeah, hopefully there's an exterior fence around the internior fence
- 36:47Speaker 1: and uh, you know, ways of preventing any nose to
- 36:52Speaker 1: nose contact because those operations are inevitably a CWD HOTS
- 37:00Speaker 1: on the map.
- 37:01Speaker 2: I would be interested to learn what your experiences are.
- 37:06Speaker 2: Jareded with that, because I think it would be just
- 37:08Speaker 2: sort of a novel scenario to watch play out during
- 37:12Speaker 2: the rut.
- 37:13Speaker 9: Yeah, cool, and we'll do one more for this little
- 37:15Speaker 9: segment here, Fantastic John is asking how he can convince
- 37:18Speaker 9: his girlfriend to allow him to put a shoulder mount
- 37:21Speaker 9: in the bedroom.
- 37:24Speaker 5: Good luck as it were for me.
- 37:28Speaker 2: Yeah, pick your battles, I think.
- 37:31Speaker 1: Are we talking like a prong horned shoulder mount or
- 37:34Speaker 1: moose moose sick point bull elk?
- 37:36Speaker 3: Right?
- 37:37Speaker 5: Yeah?
- 37:37Speaker 3: How tall are your ceiling?
- 37:38Speaker 2: How big is the bedroom? How important is it for
- 37:42Speaker 2: you to put a shoulder mount in the bedroom. I
- 37:45Speaker 2: feel like I have pretty free reign of the house
- 37:47Speaker 2: when it comes to stacking skulls and you know, bear rugs.
- 37:51Speaker 5: Now, eventually that might end.
- 37:54Speaker 4: Though we reached a satur Yeah there's a point, we're
- 37:57Speaker 4: at the saturation point.
- 37:58Speaker 2: But I've never it's it's never really uh come to
- 38:03Speaker 2: a point where I felt compelled to hang on in
- 38:05Speaker 2: the bed.
- 38:05Speaker 4: There's too many unanswered questions here, like is this the
- 38:08Speaker 4: only thing this guy would have in his house or
- 38:11Speaker 4: does he already have a bunch?
- 38:12Speaker 2: Yes, the bedroom the only place without a shoulder mountain.
- 38:15Speaker 1: Plus, if you guys are still boyfriend girlfriend, just do it.
- 38:19Speaker 5: Yeah, you'll find out if you're gonna get married her.
- 38:21Speaker 2: And that's our segment of Cal's relationship advice, just test boundaries. Alrighty,
- 38:31Speaker 2: now it's time for another round of Top three.
- 38:54Speaker 5: Wow Phil hitting the high notes there.
- 38:59Speaker 2: That was incredible. I will say for a little behind
- 39:02Speaker 2: the scenes look at how things go here. I was
- 39:05Speaker 2: in this studio bright and early, and Phil came in
- 39:08Speaker 2: and he said, can you please leave? I need to
- 39:11Speaker 2: record a drop And I said sure. I said, would
- 39:16Speaker 2: you like me to put a do not disturb sign
- 39:18Speaker 2: on the door, to which he replied, yes, This might
- 39:22Speaker 2: be the most embarrassing thing I've ever done. I know,
- 39:26Speaker 2: I think you're perfectly I mean, you didn't have time
- 39:29Speaker 2: to auto tune that.
- 39:30Speaker 9: No, that song, really it really shows you the limits
- 39:32Speaker 9: of your singing abilities.
- 39:34Speaker 2: That's go straight from the pipes. I'd take that as
- 39:36Speaker 2: a that gets my stamp of approval, Phil, Great, Thank
- 39:39Speaker 2: you boy. Thursday is my favorite. This week we'll be
- 39:45Speaker 2: ranking our preferred species of fish and game for the table,
- 39:48Speaker 2: or talking the critters that you're reaching for if they're
- 39:51Speaker 2: in the freezer. Brody will start with you. What's your
- 39:54Speaker 2: number three choice?
- 39:56Speaker 5: Am I doing all three or just my third choice?
- 39:58Speaker 2: Let's go and row. Let's go your third, cows third,
- 40:01Speaker 2: my third, your second cow sick in my second, Okay,
- 40:04Speaker 2: and then we'll continue that pattern.
- 40:06Speaker 4: But I am going to say that I think that
- 40:08Speaker 4: this is one of those like tough and almost kind
- 40:11Speaker 4: of meaningless ranking systems because I like all kinds of
- 40:15Speaker 4: wild fishing game and it's kind of.
- 40:17Speaker 5: Like based on the time of year.
- 40:20Speaker 4: Like I don't have any wild turkey brass in my
- 40:23Speaker 4: freezer right now, so like if I had some, that
- 40:26Speaker 4: would be my favorite thing to eat.
- 40:28Speaker 5: I'm just just.
- 40:29Speaker 2: Putting I was gonna I was going to expect that
- 40:32Speaker 2: from cow.
- 40:33Speaker 4: Yeah, Like it totally changes you disagree with.
- 40:36Speaker 2: The press, Yeah, I think I think in the spirit
- 40:39Speaker 2: of this of this segment, if it's in the freezer
- 40:45Speaker 2: and you think I have X, Y or Z freezer,
- 40:49Speaker 2: like what what which one are you most commonly going
- 40:52Speaker 2: to reach for?
- 40:54Speaker 4: It's well, I don't know that it's a common thing either, right,
- 40:57Speaker 4: It's like it might be you only have a little
- 41:00Speaker 4: bit of it.
- 41:00Speaker 3: Exactly, Brody, what's your number three choice?
- 41:03Speaker 4: I'm saying, it's like there's a lot to think about here, Randall,
- 41:07Speaker 4: I'll say king salmon, because I only got a little
- 41:09Speaker 4: bit of that stuff left right now. And it's like,
- 41:14Speaker 4: if you've had the different kinds of Pacific salmon, there's
- 41:17Speaker 4: like no question that nocean cock king is the best
- 41:19Speaker 4: of them, batty, delicious, No man, King's got kings. King's
- 41:26Speaker 4: like bigger and better and it's a cooler fish.
- 41:31Speaker 5: Everything about it.
- 41:32Speaker 2: It's good. Col what's your number three?
- 41:38Speaker 3: Elk?
- 41:40Speaker 2: Care to elaborate on the reason behind your choice.
- 41:43Speaker 1: Elk is a fine meat, but I don't find elk
- 41:49Speaker 1: to be very flavorful at this point in my life.
- 41:52Speaker 4: There's a lot of variability too, man, Like you shoot
- 41:56Speaker 4: an old cow, you.
- 41:57Speaker 5: Might break a tooth on that thing, or it could
- 41:59Speaker 5: be super could be super tender.
- 42:02Speaker 1: That cow in the in the picture you literally pulled
- 42:05Speaker 1: her ivories out what was left of them with your fingers,
- 42:08Speaker 1: like they fell out super old cow and she was
- 42:11Speaker 1: delicious yep. But like I have a bowl in the
- 42:16Speaker 1: freezer right now, and the tenderline was like, this is
- 42:24Speaker 1: going to take a while.
- 42:27Speaker 4: Yeah, I feel like the safest bet is to shoot
- 42:30Speaker 4: a young raghorn bull because then you know it's not old.
- 42:33Speaker 1: Yeah, Like, yeah, timing as early as possible or as
- 42:37Speaker 1: late as possible.
- 42:38Speaker 2: Yeah, Well, I went for elk as well, and the
- 42:41Speaker 2: reasons for that are versatility and quantity. There's there's a
- 42:47Speaker 2: lot of especially with all that ground and sausage, there's
- 42:49Speaker 2: a lot you can do with it, and so it's
- 42:51Speaker 2: kind of just our go to and it's also our
- 42:53Speaker 2: go to because there's a lot of it for every
- 42:55Speaker 2: elk you kill. Mm hmm, yep, Brody, what's your number
- 42:59Speaker 2: two here?
- 42:59Speaker 4: Oh, I'd I'd probably go with some white meat game
- 43:04Speaker 4: bird like blue grouse.
- 43:05Speaker 5: Well, i'd go with wild.
- 43:07Speaker 4: Turkey just because you get more of it. I don't know, know,
- 43:10Speaker 4: I'm going with blue grouse. It's better than wild turkey.
- 43:13Speaker 3: Blue grouse is fantastic.
- 43:15Speaker 2: What are you doing with that?
- 43:16Speaker 4: Typically all different kinds of stuff, man, like you can't beat.
- 43:21Speaker 4: Just like I like to save the legs from all
- 43:24Speaker 4: my game birds and then do something with those. But
- 43:27Speaker 4: like the breast from a blue grouse pounded out, just
- 43:32Speaker 4: battered and fried on a sandwich.
- 43:33Speaker 2: It's hard to beat.
- 43:34Speaker 1: Yeah, yep, col number two, I say mule deer. So
- 43:44Speaker 1: I'm yeah, I'd like I really for whatever reason, don't
- 43:49Speaker 1: find uh, you know, even trying to kill big old bucks,
- 43:54Speaker 1: like I don't find them.
- 43:57Speaker 10: Uh.
- 43:58Speaker 1: Chewy, and they have more flavor than elk, So I'd
- 44:05Speaker 1: prefer mule deer over elk.
- 44:06Speaker 2: Big mule deer, all right.
- 44:10Speaker 1: That are living the life of mule deer, a good
- 44:12Speaker 1: life far away from agriculture.
- 44:15Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 44:15Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 44:16Speaker 2: I went with salmon for my number two, and I
- 44:19Speaker 2: couldn't decide between sakkai or king, so I just went
- 44:22Speaker 2: with the generic salmon. But I like sake if it's
- 44:25Speaker 2: just going on the grill, but I feel like king
- 44:27Speaker 2: is more maybe a little more firstile, like for a
- 44:29Speaker 2: chowder you have all that extra.
- 44:31Speaker 5: Fat and slicing it up and eating it raw.
- 44:34Speaker 2: But yeah, I love it. I love having a big
- 44:36Speaker 2: pile of salmon in the freezer. And for your number
- 44:40Speaker 2: one selection, Brody.
- 44:41Speaker 4: Well, I got a shitload of moose in the freezer
- 44:44Speaker 4: right now, so that's my favorite.
- 44:46Speaker 5: But actually like it. I think out of.
- 44:49Speaker 4: The different servid species, moose has like and this is
- 44:54Speaker 4: going to sound weird, some people be like, no way,
- 44:58Speaker 4: but I think it's like it has a beefier flavor
- 45:02Speaker 4: than other deer species. It's like noticeable and it's like
- 45:07Speaker 4: you you take a bite of that stuff and it's like, yeah,
- 45:10Speaker 4: that's that's like good, good meat and yeah, so I'm
- 45:14Speaker 4: glad I got a lot of it right now.
- 45:16Speaker 2: Yeah, you'll be enjoying that one for a while.
- 45:19Speaker 1: Ducks, Mallard Ducks or you know Mallard Wigeon, Gadwall fat tails.
- 45:25Speaker 3: Yeah, something with fat. Yep.
- 45:28Speaker 1: Yeah, like that is my Are you familiar with this
- 45:33Speaker 1: like girl dinner phenomenon that? Oh yeah, you know that's
- 45:38Speaker 1: my girl dinner.
- 45:39Speaker 2: Like I so cal call and snored on the couch. Yeah,
- 45:44Speaker 2: with a rom com on.
- 45:46Speaker 3: It'll eat a hole with it. Yeah, I love it.
- 45:54Speaker 2: So throat on the grill with a big fireball that
- 45:56Speaker 2: maybe comes close to burning down your friends on the
- 46:00Speaker 2: fourth of July.
- 46:01Speaker 1: Yep, yep, that type of duck's bread to sop up
- 46:04Speaker 1: that fat with Yeah, salt, fat, protein, medium, rare blood
- 46:10Speaker 1: all around.
- 46:11Speaker 2: Yep.
- 46:11Speaker 3: Like that speaks speaks to a person.
- 46:14Speaker 2: Hard to beat.
- 46:14Speaker 3: Yep.
- 46:15Speaker 2: I was surprised. Uh. My number one choice is antelope.
- 46:20Speaker 5: Man.
- 46:20Speaker 2: If I get an antelope in the freezer or in
- 46:22Speaker 2: some years multiple analope in the freezer, that stuff just
- 46:25Speaker 2: goes so quickly because it's simple, you know, seer it,
- 46:30Speaker 2: cook it, rare salt, and you don't need much else
- 46:33Speaker 2: because it's just got so much flavor on its own.
- 46:35Speaker 3: Yep.
- 46:35Speaker 2: So I thought I thought this was going to be
- 46:37Speaker 2: uh more of a boring segment because it would be
- 46:40Speaker 2: on the same page. But I like that we got
- 46:41Speaker 2: a little bit of variety here.
- 46:43Speaker 1: Well, yeah, I do side with Brody. Here is like,
- 46:46Speaker 1: you know, some seasons of plenty in one protein department
- 46:50Speaker 1: mm hmm. Like I mean, last two years ago, I
- 46:54Speaker 1: had two big chunks of blue fin tuna mm hmm,
- 46:58Speaker 1: and like, yeah, holy shit, man, I.
- 47:02Speaker 2: Thought there was another way to approach this, where it
- 47:05Speaker 2: was what's one wildfish or game species that's been in
- 47:09Speaker 2: your freezer once that you'd like to see back in there.
- 47:14Speaker 1: Yeah, I'd like Musko's loin is I think unique and
- 47:19Speaker 1: really really fantastic, like big.
- 47:21Speaker 5: Horn sheep battie delicious yep.
- 47:24Speaker 3: Hard to acquire, Yeah.
- 47:25Speaker 2: Hard to acquire. Yeah, I'd go with mountain lion.
- 47:29Speaker 3: Mountain Lion's fantastic.
- 47:31Speaker 2: If I could shoot a mountain lion every year instead
- 47:34Speaker 2: of a deer, I'd probably do that just for variety.
- 47:37Speaker 4: Yeah, yeah, I mean, variety is the key man. You
- 47:39Speaker 4: can get sick of anything, Like you to have the
- 47:41Speaker 4: best elk in the world, but if you're eating it
- 47:43Speaker 4: every day, you're gonna get sick of it eventually.
- 47:46Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 47:46Speaker 1: Like you had a long stretch of being up to
- 47:49Speaker 1: my ears and elk meat and not hunting elk for
- 47:55Speaker 1: a few seasons, I haven't been like missing elk in
- 47:58Speaker 1: the freezer, you know.
- 48:00Speaker 2: M Well, thanks for playing along, gents, will come up
- 48:04Speaker 2: with a more compelling clearcut prompt for our next top
- 48:09Speaker 2: three segment.
- 48:10Speaker 3: Yeah, always room to improve, you know.
- 48:14Speaker 2: Our next segment is meat Eater movie Club.
- 48:20Speaker 9: Oh love what you did there, Phil, It's a menadrie.
- 48:29Speaker 2: The nineteen seventy eight or perhaps nineteen seventy six. I
- 48:33Speaker 2: found a few discrepancies in various sources for when this
- 48:37Speaker 2: film was released. The nineteen seven eight film Buffalo Rider,
- 48:40Speaker 2: directed by John Fabian, Dick Robinson, and George Loris, stars
- 48:45Speaker 2: stuntman Rick Gwynn as Jake Buffalo Jones, a frontiersman who
- 48:50Speaker 2: tames an American bison and uses it as his primary
- 48:54Speaker 2: mode of transportation while battling both natural elements and human adversaries.
- 49:00Speaker 2: The film's plot follows Jones, the writer, and his companion
- 49:04Speaker 2: Sampson the Buffalo, through a series of increasingly outlandish adventures
- 49:09Speaker 2: across the frontier. Their primary antagonist is the ruthless market
- 49:13Speaker 2: hunter Frank Nesbitt, who the narrator tells us quote loves
- 49:17Speaker 2: the killing, and his unsavory gang of hide skinners, Ralph
- 49:20Speaker 2: Pearson ted Claiborne, who serve as the film's central villains.
- 49:25Speaker 2: While most peculiar to a contemporary audience, Buffalo Riter's unconventional construction,
- 49:31Speaker 2: a rough cobbling together of pre existing wildlife footage, stage scenes,
- 49:35Speaker 2: buffalo riding stunts, and excessive narration, is representative of the
- 49:40Speaker 2: low budget exploitation filmmaking of the nineteen seventies. This genre
- 49:46Speaker 2: emphasized shocking violence, lurid sexuality, and unusual spectacle to draw
- 49:51Speaker 2: audiences away from the production values and narrative coherence of
- 49:55Speaker 2: mainstream Hollywood cinema. Beyond a simple representative example of this
- 50:00Speaker 2: particular style, however, Buffalo Writer serves as a rich text
- 50:04Speaker 2: that emerged from and reflected the speci the specific historical
- 50:08Speaker 2: conditions of its creation. Its chaotic, almost anarchic production reflects,
- 50:13Speaker 2: no doubt unintentionally, America's fractured cultural landscape in the nineteen seventies.
- 50:19Speaker 2: This was an era of profound disillusionment in American life.
- 50:23Speaker 2: The Watergate scandal had shattered public faith in authority and
- 50:26Speaker 2: established institutions, the Vietnam War had ended in humiliation, and
- 50:31Speaker 2: economic stagflation was eroding middle class stability. In nineteen seventy nine,
- 50:36Speaker 2: only one year after the release of Buffalo Writer, President
- 50:39Speaker 2: Carter would deliver his famous Crisis of Confidence speech, diagnosing
- 50:43Speaker 2: a nation that had lost its sense of purpose and
- 50:46Speaker 2: direction in many respects. The confusing structure and seemingly arbitrary
- 50:51Speaker 2: narrative choices of Buffalo Writer embody the fraying coherence that
- 50:55Speaker 2: Americans in the late nineteen seventies saw all around them.
- 50:59Speaker 2: Perhaps most obviously, the film's technical shortcomings. Its rough editing
- 51:03Speaker 2: and consistent tone, and apparent lack of quality control reflect
- 51:07Speaker 2: the decade's material constraints. Likewise, the prevalent drug culture of
- 51:12Speaker 2: the decade might help explain some of the film's more
- 51:14Speaker 2: bizarre creative decisions. The inexplicable genre hopping between wildlife documentary
- 51:19Speaker 2: and Western adventure, the replacement of dialogue with unceasing descriptive narration,
- 51:24Speaker 2: and sequences like the Buffalo in a Saloon shootout suggest
- 51:28Speaker 2: a production process operating on its own might I suggest,
- 51:32Speaker 2: chemically altered logic, Perhaps most poignantly, much like the nascent
- 51:37Speaker 2: environmental movement of the nineteen seventies, which struggled to reconcile
- 51:41Speaker 2: ecological concern with embedded cultural practices and market forces, Buffalo
- 51:46Speaker 2: Riders environmental message, while sincere, is undermined by its own contradictions.
- 51:51Speaker 2: Just as the villainized hide hunters within it, the narrative
- 51:54Speaker 2: exploit wildlife for profit, the filmmakers themselves commodify animal violence
- 51:59Speaker 2: for monetized entertainment value. As the film's catchy theme song
- 52:03Speaker 2: rolls over the end credits, the viewer can't help but
- 52:06Speaker 2: wrestle with an unresolvable tension between our heroes guiding ethos
- 52:10Speaker 2: and the commercial imperatives of artistic production in capitalist society.
- 52:16Speaker 2: Viewed through this lens, Buffalo Rider becomes more than just
- 52:18Speaker 2: a badly made movie. It serves as an inadvertent cultural
- 52:22Speaker 2: artifact capturing the disorientation of American life in the late
- 52:25Speaker 2: nineteen seventies. It's very incoherence tells us something about a
- 52:30Speaker 2: moment when American society itself seemed to be coming a
- 52:32Speaker 2: part at the seams, when the old certainties of post
- 52:35Speaker 2: war prosperity and progress were dissolving, and new truths had
- 52:39Speaker 2: yet to emerge. I give it a ten out of ten,
- 52:44Speaker 2: and for your viewing pleasure, I am pleased to share
- 52:47Speaker 2: one of the YouTube clips that gave this film something
- 52:49Speaker 2: of a renaissance in recent years. We're going to watch
- 52:52Speaker 2: a brief excerpt from episode two of Guy on a
- 52:56Speaker 2: Buffalo by the band Jomo and the Possum Posse out
- 52:59Speaker 2: of Austin in Texas. Please Phil take it away.
- 53:04Speaker 3: One day, the guy on the buffalo hopped off.
- 53:07Speaker 5: To stretch his legs, walk in the bill.
- 53:11Speaker 2: Hey wants to send the weeds. It's a baby, awesome
- 53:15Speaker 2: and put it in a saddle, hopped on, hoped.
- 53:18Speaker 1: It up the hill and across the blame drying across
- 53:21Speaker 1: the river. Not gonna happen, man riding on a buffalo
- 53:25Speaker 1: member or keep the baby up floating with your.
- 53:28Speaker 11: Guy out the buffalo. Gotta find your friends.
- 53:33Speaker 1: She's barish, guya love, Hey, you want this baby?
- 53:38Speaker 3: She put then a doch you guy.
- 53:42Speaker 5: You're welcome. Lady.
- 53:44Speaker 11: Gotta bull it on on of my.
- 53:51Speaker 3: Guy on a full loop. One day the guy on
- 53:55Speaker 3: the buffalo walked off.
- 53:57Speaker 2: It's so good.
- 53:58Speaker 3: It is so good.
- 53:59Speaker 5: No, no better than the movie in Fast.
- 54:02Speaker 3: Well.
- 54:02Speaker 1: The thing is is, this is how the movie is narrated.
- 54:07Speaker 1: It's like and now he's doing this and this and this.
- 54:10Speaker 2: That's what's striking to me.
- 54:12Speaker 3: Got you're straight out and got my back.
- 54:18Speaker 1: Okay, this scene where he shows the scars on his back,
- 54:21Speaker 1: it's like, well, understand that, get.
- 54:32Speaker 3: Out of here. So there's the animal violence. Yeah, multiple
- 54:39Speaker 3: times in this show.
- 54:41Speaker 5: Thank you, Phil.
- 54:42Speaker 3: Definitely get kicked by a buffalo.
- 54:43Speaker 2: Thank you Phil. So I do have a bit of
- 54:45Speaker 2: research that I'm tickled to share with you, uh as
- 54:49Speaker 2: a bit of a prelude to our discussion. I found
- 54:51Speaker 2: an article, uh that was published by the Canadian Broadcasting Company.
- 54:55Speaker 2: Is mister Gwyn who plays Jake Jones is now Burton.
- 55:00Speaker 6: So.
- 55:00Speaker 2: The film was filmed in Utah and Oregon and the
- 55:03Speaker 2: lead actor, Rick Guinn, was working for a company that
- 55:06Speaker 2: supplied animals for film productions. He was in Missouri to
- 55:10Speaker 2: purchase some mules and someone offered to sell him a
- 55:13Speaker 2: buffalo as well. He decided to try to tame it
- 55:16Speaker 2: so that he could ride it, and he was successful
- 55:18Speaker 2: in doing so, and then some filmmakers saw him do
- 55:21Speaker 2: that and said, do you want to star in a
- 55:22Speaker 2: movie about a man who rides a buffalo? So that's
- 55:25Speaker 2: how we got this film. Many many of the scenes
- 55:29Speaker 2: were unscripted, and they simply captured what happens when a
- 55:32Speaker 2: man is on top of a buffalo. According to Gwinn quote,
- 55:35Speaker 2: there's still a wild animal, and they feel a little different.
- 55:37Speaker 2: They're a little more stubborn and not as smart as
- 55:39Speaker 2: a horse. It seems his fall off Samson in the
- 55:42Speaker 2: film was in fact a real fall that resulted in injuries.
- 55:45Speaker 3: To questioning that.
- 55:48Speaker 2: My favorite detail, the mountain lion attack in the film,
- 55:52Speaker 2: was in fact a mountain lion attack. The lion was
- 55:55Speaker 2: being filmed on the same property for a different production
- 55:58Speaker 2: when it escaped the production ran onto the set of
- 56:01Speaker 2: Buffalo Rider and attacked mister gwyn.
- 56:05Speaker 5: But it wasn't a wild mountain lion.
- 56:07Speaker 2: I mean it attacked him. It was being filmed for
- 56:10Speaker 2: like a nature show, and so it it attacked him.
- 56:15Speaker 2: The cameras just happened to be rolling as he was
- 56:17Speaker 2: filming a hunting scene. According to Gwynn quote, I had
- 56:21Speaker 2: to kind of fight him off. It was a life
- 56:24Speaker 2: or death situation. I kind of had to do something
- 56:26Speaker 2: real quick. We had lots of shots like that that
- 56:29Speaker 2: were just built in the movie that were accidents. Just
- 56:32Speaker 2: changed the script a little bit and continued on.
- 56:34Speaker 1: But that mountain lion obviously didn't have full Yeah, but
- 56:37Speaker 1: when they showed his injuries, those were real injuries.
- 56:40Speaker 3: Yeah, but they were like they were and.
- 56:41Speaker 2: That was a real lion.
- 56:42Speaker 1: Had been a real lion, yeah, there, a fully intact
- 56:46Speaker 1: lion injuries would have been.
- 56:48Speaker 5: The fact that they escaped production.
- 56:50Speaker 3: Yeah. The fact that you guys are not listen, I
- 56:54Speaker 3: think it's amazing.
- 56:55Speaker 2: You're not enthralled by the idea that that lion attack
- 56:58Speaker 2: was totally listen.
- 56:59Speaker 1: I have to point something else out here. The fact
- 57:01Speaker 1: that that buffalo comes out of Missouri is very telling
- 57:05Speaker 1: because you can tell that that thing has a lot
- 57:08Speaker 1: of beef Caligi.
- 57:09Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, for sure. Yes, So just general thoughts on
- 57:13Speaker 2: the film.
- 57:13Speaker 3: It's a beefalow.
- 57:15Speaker 4: It held my attention for less time than your review
- 57:18Speaker 4: of the film did and then went back to cleaning guns.
- 57:21Speaker 3: Oh, I think you're crazy, man. Listen. I would watch.
- 57:26Speaker 1: This over Escanaba in the moonlight. Yeah, nine out of ten. Absolutely.
- 57:31Speaker 1: I loved the You know if you're you know, old
- 57:36Speaker 1: enough to remember like the old the big Long run
- 57:39Speaker 1: a Disney movies. Yeah, right, yeah, this is like right
- 57:43Speaker 1: in that genre. And then yeah, it has all this
- 57:45Speaker 1: like very gratuitous like you know, Nature document What was
- 57:50Speaker 1: that guy's name who Grizzly the nature guy who they
- 57:55Speaker 1: found out like a lot of the animals in the
- 57:57Speaker 1: Nature documents his name.
- 57:59Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 58:00Speaker 1: Uh anyways, yeah, I know you'd be like synonymous with
- 58:04Speaker 1: nature for a long time. But anyway, yeah, I mean
- 58:07Speaker 1: in just crazy departures.
- 58:10Speaker 2: And Bandit the Raccoon.
- 58:13Speaker 1: To me, it's it's hilarious because there's like some filmmaking
- 58:17Speaker 1: one oh one right where it's like, well, if you're
- 58:19Speaker 1: going to talk about it, you have to show it. Yeah,
- 58:21Speaker 1: and it's be like so then he got on the
- 58:23Speaker 1: track and it looked like that of a mule track,
- 58:25Speaker 1: and it's like, oh, there's Jake on the track.
- 58:27Speaker 2: Except I liked the part in the film where they
- 58:30Speaker 2: mentioned a character who never appears on the stream. He's
- 58:32Speaker 2: like he talked to the sheriff and the sheriff said
- 58:34Speaker 2: it was okay.
- 58:35Speaker 4: So he went on, Oh, there's a lot of filling
- 58:37Speaker 4: in of gaps with the narration because otherwise.
- 58:41Speaker 1: There would just be no story and it's just constant narration,
- 58:44Speaker 1: which is what are There.
- 58:47Speaker 2: Is a saying in showbiz, you know, it's it's show,
- 58:52Speaker 2: don't tell, and they took that axiom and flipped it
- 58:55Speaker 2: on its head and it's like, we're actually just going
- 58:57Speaker 2: to tell you things that are happening that you won't
- 58:59Speaker 2: see happen.
- 59:00Speaker 1: Yeah, the scenery was great, was great, strongest part of
- 59:05Speaker 1: the movie. There's wildlife so well that the actors weren't
- 59:12Speaker 1: going to carry any part of this that it's like
- 59:15Speaker 1: just lean on the scenery, the narration, and the animals.
- 59:19Speaker 2: Oh the line, the line delivery was insane.
- 59:22Speaker 4: What I want to know is like the people who
- 59:25Speaker 4: made this movie was it made? Were they serious about
- 59:32Speaker 4: like this is like a movie or were they just
- 59:35Speaker 4: fucking around?
- 59:36Speaker 5: I believe they.
- 59:37Speaker 2: I believe there were.
- 59:38Speaker 1: There's a messing around came before it was an actual
- 59:42Speaker 1: movie and then somebody was like, yeah, we're gonna pay
- 59:44Speaker 1: for this.
- 59:44Speaker 3: Oh God.
- 59:45Speaker 2: There was a quote from uh Rick Gwynn that it
- 59:51Speaker 2: was essentially just like meant to be a fun, silly
- 59:54Speaker 2: family wildlife movie with a bit of adventure. So I
- 59:58Speaker 2: don't think it was like done as a parody, right,
- 1:00:03Speaker 2: but yeah, I mean, like it's just like a fever dream.
- 1:00:07Speaker 2: Like at one point they go with the racket. They
- 1:00:10Speaker 2: follow the raccoon, and the lion tries to drown it,
- 1:00:13Speaker 2: but then the lion is in the cold deep water
- 1:00:15Speaker 2: and it can't drown it. So the raccoon gets away
- 1:00:18Speaker 2: and then rides an ice rides a ice flow. Yeah,
- 1:00:21Speaker 2: rides an ice flow down the river, thinks.
- 1:00:23Speaker 3: Long and hard before he comes near that river again.
- 1:00:25Speaker 2: Yeah. On the next scene, phenomenal the.
- 1:00:29Speaker 1: The Pioneer lady, her acting, I mean, they they make
- 1:00:35Speaker 1: the decision to stick with her long. You can see
- 1:00:37Speaker 1: her like emotional wind up to her line, but they
- 1:00:41Speaker 1: show all of that. I mean, it's it's really amazing.
- 1:00:44Speaker 4: It's like it seems like so weird and such an
- 1:00:47Speaker 4: outlier now fifty years later or whatever, but really it's
- 1:00:53Speaker 4: not that unusual.
- 1:00:54Speaker 5: For the seventies. They made a lot of weird movies.
- 1:00:58Speaker 3: Go back and watch easy. You're like Rancho Deluxe, Rancho DELX.
- 1:01:04Speaker 2: The raccoon scene in this film reminded me of the
- 1:01:08Speaker 2: like ten minute sex scene in the middle of Rancho Deluxe,
- 1:01:11Speaker 2: And you're like, why did they do this. Were they
- 1:01:15Speaker 2: just filming time? It didn't need to be in this movie.
- 1:01:18Speaker 2: But Sydney had a theory that the raccoon was important
- 1:01:23Speaker 2: because when Buffalo Jones returned the infant to the ranch,
- 1:01:29Speaker 2: you know that the raccoon would have to nurse the
- 1:01:32Speaker 2: baby to health because they made a big point to
- 1:01:34Speaker 2: say that it was a female raccoon to everyone's surprise.
- 1:01:37Speaker 3: Yeah, that was the big reveal, and he got.
- 1:01:39Speaker 2: Cobbler and Stu or something. I mean, it was just.
- 1:01:42Speaker 1: Yeah, I would watch this folks at home. Yeah, I mean,
- 1:01:47Speaker 1: this is going to surprise you. It's great. Like there's
- 1:01:50Speaker 1: a lot of stuff that you're probably numbing your mind
- 1:01:53Speaker 1: with on Netflix.
- 1:01:55Speaker 3: Check this one out.
- 1:01:56Speaker 2: And I will say the beginning of it, when they're
- 1:01:59Speaker 2: out lining the historical context is pretty solid.
- 1:02:04Speaker 5: I was gonna ask you, like historically or the man? Right?
- 1:02:08Speaker 5: So how accurate is what they were?
- 1:02:11Speaker 2: I mean, Buffalo Jones is a real person who's life
- 1:02:13Speaker 2: in no way movie the.
- 1:02:16Speaker 5: Whole thing was depicted.
- 1:02:18Speaker 2: Well, I thought it was for the.
- 1:02:19Speaker 5: Conflict in the movie.
- 1:02:21Speaker 2: Well they they I mean, these guys had one pack
- 1:02:25Speaker 2: animal and they were hide hunters, so they wouldn't have
- 1:02:26Speaker 2: gotten very far, you know, typically I think they would
- 1:02:29Speaker 2: have operated with a few wagons. But the way that
- 1:02:32Speaker 2: they hunted them, like when he's talking about shooting the
- 1:02:35Speaker 2: lead cow and then shooting the whole herd. I mean
- 1:02:39Speaker 2: a lot of that stuff is straight out of like
- 1:02:41Speaker 2: the sources that you read, right, and the stand hunting
- 1:02:44Speaker 2: like going up and getting you know, sneaking up on herd,
- 1:02:46Speaker 2: getting down prone. He even had the shooting sticks at
- 1:02:49Speaker 2: one point, Like that's something.
- 1:02:50Speaker 4: That they did some some solid research and laying out
- 1:02:54Speaker 4: the cartridges.
- 1:02:55Speaker 3: Yeah, that all seemed.
- 1:02:57Speaker 2: And the guys like when the guys like the narrator
- 1:03:00Speaker 2: like then they got the sharps, the big fifty sharps
- 1:03:03Speaker 2: and they were shooting him. I forget he I think
- 1:03:05Speaker 2: he said like to six fifty. Yeah, I don't know
- 1:03:08Speaker 2: how how you know accurate that is. But from the
- 1:03:12Speaker 2: beginning of it, I was like, man, if this is
- 1:03:14Speaker 2: like a documentary or something produced for high schoolers, like
- 1:03:18Speaker 2: this would be pretty informed.
- 1:03:19Speaker 11: That's exactly what it reminded me of.
- 1:03:21Speaker 9: Like I'm just old enough to remember, like the substitute
- 1:03:23Speaker 9: teacher comes in and rents out like an old VHS
- 1:03:25Speaker 9: from the av department and puts it on and like mister.
- 1:03:28Speaker 2: Jones has a fever, and so I'm gonna just play
- 1:03:32Speaker 2: this film for you to continue our lesson on the
- 1:03:35Speaker 2: West and the destruction of the Bison.
- 1:03:36Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 1:03:37Speaker 4: I said this earlier, but I do think Steve would
- 1:03:39Speaker 4: take issue with with demonizing the buffalo hunters. Oh yeah,
- 1:03:44Speaker 4: I like, which is not an uncommon thing in movies, Like.
- 1:03:48Speaker 2: Sure, and I did like that they were just like
- 1:03:50Speaker 2: basically thirteen year olds who got into wrestling matches at
- 1:03:55Speaker 2: the drop of a hat. But the one the one
- 1:03:58Speaker 2: guy did have a conscience. He did say at some point, uh,
- 1:04:03Speaker 2: he killed the woman. Oh, shoot, you didn't have to
- 1:04:06Speaker 2: do that. And then he says killing women ain't good.
- 1:04:12Speaker 2: So killing women ain't no good. That comes from Ralph.
- 1:04:16Speaker 2: So I mean they did have there were there was
- 1:04:18Speaker 2: some depth to those characters, but the main hunter, rather
- 1:04:22Speaker 2: than his skinners, seemed to be sort of an unredeemable figure.
- 1:04:27Speaker 1: When they first focus, you know, nobody gets to jump
- 1:04:30Speaker 1: on Frank Nesbit. Yeah, some line like that, and then
- 1:04:34Speaker 1: the narrators like Frank Nesbit told everybody about a guy
- 1:04:40Speaker 1: riding a buffalo, and then it's like in the saloon,
- 1:04:42Speaker 1: he's like there's.
- 1:04:43Speaker 3: A guy riding a buffalo.
- 1:04:45Speaker 1: And then he goes up to the bar and he's like,
- 1:04:47Speaker 1: there's a guy riding a buffalo.
- 1:04:49Speaker 3: We saw him two days from here.
- 1:04:50Speaker 6: Oh.
- 1:04:50Speaker 2: There's also these nuggets in there that you wonder, like
- 1:04:53Speaker 2: where they going to do something else? Because the camera
- 1:04:57Speaker 2: when he when he rides the buffalo into the saloon,
- 1:04:59Speaker 2: the camera makes a point to show you that it
- 1:05:01Speaker 2: knocks over the stove, and we were just waiting for
- 1:05:04Speaker 2: the saloon to go up in flames, you know, and
- 1:05:07Speaker 2: and and then there was really no point.
- 1:05:10Speaker 5: For the camera. Too much plot for this.
- 1:05:12Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:05:12Speaker 1: Yeah, there's also a point where I do wonder if
- 1:05:15Speaker 1: it was a stuffed buffalo head that knocks over the
- 1:05:18Speaker 1: card table in that scene, because it was just a
- 1:05:21Speaker 1: weird cutaway. Also odd like frank Nesbit and the boys
- 1:05:27Speaker 1: are are bad people and Buffalo Jones concentrates of the
- 1:05:35Speaker 1: gunfight on the auxiliary character and frank Nesbitt never gets
- 1:05:40Speaker 1: a shot off.
- 1:05:41Speaker 3: Yeah, And I was like.
- 1:05:42Speaker 2: Well, okay, it also seems.
- 1:05:45Speaker 3: It was the only fly I found in the well.
- 1:05:48Speaker 2: I think my favorite part of the film was that
- 1:05:50Speaker 2: they ordered Gin and Tonics, a classic frontier drink. Give
- 1:05:56Speaker 2: me that watch, we're getting a couple of gin and tonics.
- 1:05:59Speaker 2: And then the fact that they had sort of a
- 1:06:01Speaker 2: dual ending where they filmed the saloon shootout and then
- 1:06:04Speaker 2: they're like, you know, it shouldn't end here. Why don't
- 1:06:07Speaker 2: we just have one of these guys.
- 1:06:09Speaker 3: Not be here? My dad told it.
- 1:06:11Speaker 2: And then the buffalo can kill him.
- 1:06:13Speaker 3: Yeah. But then, man, the chase scene at the end
- 1:06:17Speaker 3: goes like.
- 1:06:18Speaker 2: It's phenomenal, It's great.
- 1:06:19Speaker 3: I would watch this again.
- 1:06:20Speaker 2: It takes that mule a little while to get going though,
- 1:06:23Speaker 2: Like the first two minutes of the chase, the mule
- 1:06:25Speaker 2: just seems.
- 1:06:26Speaker 1: To interesting deal there too. Where'd the mule come?
- 1:06:32Speaker 3: Now?
- 1:06:32Speaker 1: Did they steal the mule from the wagon train? I guess,
- 1:06:35Speaker 1: but no, no saddle.
- 1:06:36Speaker 4: Yeah, I think you're asking too many questions.
- 1:06:40Speaker 2: I thought it was very strange that they didn't take
- 1:06:43Speaker 2: the wagon itself, because the primary their primary motivation in
- 1:06:47Speaker 2: all this was just logistics. They wanted to be able
- 1:06:50Speaker 2: to transport more hides, and so they killed his family
- 1:06:56Speaker 2: and then they leave the wagon there. But like the
- 1:06:58Speaker 2: reason that they first tangle up with buffalo Jones because
- 1:07:01Speaker 2: he looks at the buffalo and he says, boy, that
- 1:07:02Speaker 2: could carry a lot of stuff. Let's kill that guy
- 1:07:05Speaker 2: and take his take his mode of transportation.
- 1:07:08Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:07:09Speaker 2: Yeah, And the whole time the costumes, I just kept
- 1:07:13Speaker 2: thinking I was watching like a Jethrow Toll documentary. It
- 1:07:16Speaker 2: was just like it was like, ye, if you tamed
- 1:07:20Speaker 2: back the fringe just a little bit and added like
- 1:07:23Speaker 2: a feather in the hair, were at Woodstock all of
- 1:07:25Speaker 2: a sudden.
- 1:07:25Speaker 3: Well no, I mean yeah, they're in easy Writer. Yeah right,
- 1:07:29Speaker 3: I mean.
- 1:07:29Speaker 4: That's Hie seventy one that much different from the eighteen seventies.
- 1:07:33Speaker 2: Right, yeah, Like no, I mean the fashion was po wore.
- 1:07:36Speaker 5: The same kind of shit. It all, it all comes
- 1:07:38Speaker 5: there dirty, like yeah. Yeah.
- 1:07:41Speaker 2: The I thought that Buffalo Jones really had a very
- 1:07:44Speaker 2: striking resemblance to like nineteen seventies, you know, portrayals of Jesus.
- 1:07:50Speaker 2: The long hair, the beard, and he's just always sort
- 1:07:53Speaker 2: of has his contemplative look on his face. There was
- 1:07:56Speaker 2: a lot to unpack here.
- 1:07:58Speaker 1: There was there a real buffalo being shot, yes, and
- 1:08:04Speaker 1: definitely real dogs being kicked, and definitely a real mountain
- 1:08:09Speaker 1: lion getting punched in the face.
- 1:08:10Speaker 2: Yeah, that first buffalo that gets shot in the neck. Yeah,
- 1:08:14Speaker 2: I read somewhere someone claimed that they had trained them to.
- 1:08:18Speaker 5: Fall when that's rubber bullets, but yeah, I don't think so.
- 1:08:21Speaker 4: That's I have interesting to find out when Hollywood really
- 1:08:27Speaker 4: started cracking down on that stuff, because like animals got.
- 1:08:32Speaker 5: Shot and like.
- 1:08:35Speaker 3: Stampede scenes, like somebody's breaking the legs.
- 1:08:38Speaker 2: Yeah, a lot of horses get killed in Hollywood. Boy,
- 1:08:43Speaker 2: thanks for indulging me and taking an hour and twenty
- 1:08:46Speaker 2: eight minutes of your time to review that film, because
- 1:08:49Speaker 2: that just tickled me to death.
- 1:08:50Speaker 1: Oh again, I'd watched that over asking abb in the Moonlight.
- 1:08:54Speaker 2: And thanks to our audience for the recommendation that one
- 1:08:57Speaker 2: did come to our inbox as a as a suggested
- 1:09:00Speaker 2: film for discussions, So thanks very much for that. It
- 1:09:04Speaker 2: was just a real pleasure, Phil. I think that's about
- 1:09:08Speaker 2: time for today. But do we have any more items
- 1:09:12Speaker 2: from the chat that you like?
- 1:09:13Speaker 9: Sure you've got a few, not not a whole lot.
- 1:09:15Speaker 9: Came in and John's just asking a general bow question.
- 1:09:18Speaker 9: What bo's did you guys use this year, if any,
- 1:09:20Speaker 9: and are you excited for any new ones?
- 1:09:24Speaker 2: A six milimeter creed more.
- 1:09:28Speaker 1: I got a rob Lee bow out of Texas new
- 1:09:33Speaker 1: re curve that is absolutely bad ass.
- 1:09:36Speaker 3: I love it.
- 1:09:38Speaker 1: It's the first new bow I've had in a long time,
- 1:09:42Speaker 1: really really awesome, awesome bow, and I'm not looking for
- 1:09:47Speaker 1: another one.
- 1:09:49Speaker 5: Yeah, I can't add anything to that.
- 1:09:52Speaker 3: Great.
- 1:09:53Speaker 9: Mountain Bucks is asking if you've ever eaten Bobcat and
- 1:09:56Speaker 9: what's better, Mountain Lion or Bobcat.
- 1:09:59Speaker 6: I have.
- 1:10:00Speaker 1: I've had Mountain Lion tacos a couple of times.
- 1:10:06Speaker 3: And yeah, I mean it's it's good.
- 1:10:08Speaker 2: I don't I don't think I'm eating Bobcat.
- 1:10:10Speaker 5: I have. It's very similar. Yeah, I think you can.
- 1:10:14Speaker 4: You get the right line, You're gonna it's gonna be
- 1:10:16Speaker 4: a little fattier.
- 1:10:17Speaker 1: Yeah, and then you just have more to work with,
- 1:10:20Speaker 1: you know, like those loins and stuff on. These animals
- 1:10:23Speaker 1: have a lot more sinew, and so yeah.
- 1:10:28Speaker 4: You probably get more meat off of what like a
- 1:10:31Speaker 4: wild turkey gobbler then you'd get off of a Bobcat.
- 1:10:34Speaker 3: Yeah probably, Yeah.
- 1:10:35Speaker 11: Yeah, Cal, what's your beer of choice?
- 1:10:41Speaker 6: You know?
- 1:10:42Speaker 9: Some typos in this in this question, So I'm kind
- 1:10:44Speaker 9: of just making an assumption that that's what you're.
- 1:10:46Speaker 11: Asking, kind of like you don't like beer or lights
- 1:10:49Speaker 11: of your.
- 1:10:49Speaker 3: Choice right now?
- 1:10:51Speaker 1: There always used to be like all these good seasonal
- 1:10:55Speaker 1: dark beers that come out around Christmas time and for
- 1:10:58Speaker 1: whatever reason, and here in bos Angelus, you know, cultural Mecca,
- 1:11:03Speaker 1: you can't get any of them.
- 1:11:04Speaker 2: So that's the only part of the War on Christmas
- 1:11:07Speaker 2: that's succeeding.
- 1:11:08Speaker 1: Yeah, Phil found jubile Ale and that's good stuff. Nincossi
- 1:11:13Speaker 1: had I think it's Nincosi had Slayer.
- 1:11:16Speaker 9: Oh yeah, So Nincosi used to distribute to southwest Montana
- 1:11:20Speaker 9: and then there was some some some distribution of war
- 1:11:23Speaker 9: happening and and uh, someone pissed someone off, and then
- 1:11:26Speaker 9: they stopped distributing.
- 1:11:27Speaker 1: Nincossia was a Slayer was good? Yeah, yeah, So I like,
- 1:11:35Speaker 1: I like both ends of the spectrum. Love Rainier when
- 1:11:40Speaker 1: it's hot, and uh, you know, you just want to refreshing,
- 1:11:46Speaker 1: very light, generic logger. But other than that, it's got
- 1:11:51Speaker 1: to have some some flavor, like a really good pilsner
- 1:11:55Speaker 1: or get into the dark beers.
- 1:11:57Speaker 2: Got a six pack of the Bavic super Pills.
- 1:11:59Speaker 3: That's a Bombic super Pills. Yeah, that's good stuff. Yeah yeah.
- 1:12:03Speaker 9: And then just for the freaks out there, another plug
- 1:12:06Speaker 9: for the meat Eater Dungeons and dragon session. I'm saying
- 1:12:10Speaker 9: this on record. It will happen in twenty twenty five.
