Transcript
- 0:03Speaker 1: Hello and welcome to Outspoken.
- 0:05Speaker 2: It's your dose of the hottest influencer and pop culture
- 0:09Speaker 2: news twice a week. I'm Sophie Torber and coming up
- 0:12Speaker 2: on today's show, Sarah's Day's sunburn strategy, the latest on
- 0:17Speaker 2: the Taylor Swift terror plot, and Ella and Dom pull
- 0:20Speaker 2: the pin on.
- 0:20Speaker 1: Their controversial podcast.
- 0:22Speaker 2: But first, Sammy Robinson has been spotted in the arms
- 0:26Speaker 2: of another man. Now back in May, Sammy appeared to
- 0:30Speaker 2: soft launch Sammy Wilkes in her video, who is a
- 0:33Speaker 2: singer and American internet personality who has over 1.6 million followers. Now,
- 0:39Speaker 2: whilst we didn't see his face in this mukbang video,
- 0:42Speaker 2: his voice and arm did appear in it, and he
- 0:44Speaker 2: was spotted wearing a bracelet with the initials SW.
- 0:48Speaker 1: Now, it wasn't long.
- 0:50Speaker 2: Before super sleuths put the clues together, found out his name,
- 0:53Speaker 2: and it was posted all over gossip sites. Now, Sammy
- 0:57Speaker 2: Wilkes lives in LA, but Sammy has been spending a
- 1:00Speaker 2: fair bit of time there this year as she grows
- 1:03Speaker 2: one mile in the US.
- 1:04Speaker 1: This is so confusing. Sammy and Sammy.
- 1:08Speaker 2: I've always wondered if people get put off from dating
- 1:11Speaker 2: a person with a similar or with the same name. Well,
- 1:14Speaker 2: it's like Sophie Keisha and Sophie van der Heuvel. Surely
- 1:17Speaker 2: it becomes a problem at some point. Now, over the weekend,
- 1:21Speaker 2: our inbox was inundated with listeners sending through an Instagram
- 1:25Speaker 2: story of Sammy leaping into the arms of another man
- 1:29Speaker 2: and appearing to kiss him. Now, for those who haven't
- 1:33Speaker 2: seen it, I have to say, I am not convinced
- 1:35Speaker 2: that this was a genuine kiss because you saw her
- 1:39Speaker 2: head and hair fling over him, but you didn't actually
- 1:42Speaker 2: see their lips touching. And there was a lot of
- 1:45Speaker 2: laughter after it. It seemed maybe like a joke.
- 1:48Speaker 1: What, so you're saying that they're just friends?
- 1:51Speaker 2: I think that they might just be friends because they
- 1:53Speaker 2: were hanging out after the city to surf, which they
- 1:56Speaker 2: both competed in with a number of friends. Now, this
- 1:58Speaker 2: guy is called Cameron Carter and he is the director
- 2:02Speaker 2: of a company called Mr. C, which appears to be
- 2:04Speaker 2: a marketing company. And on his Instagram account, he mostly
- 2:08Speaker 2: posts about his work and he posted a photo of
- 2:11Speaker 2: Sammy in June at fashion week.
- 2:13Speaker 1: And she sent little love hearts back to him.
- 2:15Speaker 2: And he often shares fashion photos of other celebrities wearing
- 2:19Speaker 2: his client's clothes. So I think that they're friends through
- 2:22Speaker 2: business and work. And I think that they're perhaps having
- 2:26Speaker 2: a bit of a laugh to either make someone jealous
- 2:29Speaker 2: or attract attention. Yeah, it's an interesting move because they
- 2:32Speaker 2: would know there's going to be so much speculation online,
- 2:35Speaker 2: especially when they're sharing videos of what appears to be
- 2:38Speaker 2: them kissing. It comes at an interesting time because over
- 2:41Speaker 2: the weekend, influencer updates reported that Sammy had unfollowed a
- 2:45Speaker 2: guy called Sean Stevenson. Now, he is a New Zealand
- 2:49Speaker 2: rugby player who she was rumored to be dating previously.
- 2:52Speaker 1: So she seems to be getting rid of a bit
- 2:54Speaker 1: of dead wood.
- 2:55Speaker 2: She might be entering her single girl era, as much
- 2:58Speaker 2: as I hate using that term.
- 3:00Speaker 1: Hot girl summer on the horizon.
- 3:01Speaker 3: It was a hat and sunnies for me and honestly
- 3:04Speaker 3: hide me from the world until I can just lay
- 3:06Speaker 3: in the sun.
- 3:07Speaker 2: Fitness influencer Sarah's Day has caused a stir whilst holidaying
- 3:11Speaker 2: in Hawaii with her family. Despite spending an estimated.
- 3:15Speaker 1: $ 48, 000.
- 3:15Speaker 2: To fly her family of four business class, the divisive
- 3:20Speaker 2: influencer spent the first day of her trip complaining about
- 3:23Speaker 2: the price.
- 3:24Speaker 1: Of a Hawaiian coffee.
- 3:25Speaker 2: She also used a severe sunburn as an opportunity to
- 3:29Speaker 2: sell skincare. Sophie, Sarah wasn't overly impressed with her experience
- 3:34Speaker 2: with Qantas business class. No, I don't think the Qantas
- 3:37Speaker 2: team would have been overly wrapped with the content that
- 3:39Speaker 2: she produced because She shared a reel detailing her experience
- 3:43Speaker 2: flying Qantas business class with her husband, Kurt, and their
- 3:46Speaker 2: two kids. And they flew directly from Sydney to Hawaii,
- 3:50Speaker 2: which was a 10-hour flight overnight. Now, this content is
- 3:53Speaker 2: becoming quite popular on TikTok. I recently saw Beck Lomas
- 3:57Speaker 2: sharing about her experience flying first class to the U.K.,
- 4:02Speaker 2: And I love this whole fly on the wall look
- 4:04Speaker 2: at how the other half live because it is like
- 4:07Speaker 2: another world up there.
- 4:08Speaker 1: There are lie down beds. There's restaurant quality food.
- 4:11Speaker 2: And the amount of space that you personally get is
- 4:14Speaker 2: just obscene compared to what people get in cattle class.
- 4:18Speaker 2: There is a big market for these reviews on airplane food.
- 4:21Speaker 2: I've seen them all over TikTok and I love watching them.
- 4:24Speaker 2: Even my 70-year-old dad will.
- 4:26Speaker 1: Sit down on YouTube and watch food reviews.
- 4:28Speaker 2: Well, this is what I think Sarah was going for
- 4:30Speaker 2: because in this reel, she included shots of her eating
- 4:34Speaker 2: her entree and main, but then she said she decided
- 4:37Speaker 2: not to give a review.
- 4:38Speaker 1: Here's what she said.
- 4:40Speaker 4: Now, this was a night flight and we were flying business,
- 4:42Speaker 4: so I was honestly really looking forward to the food,
- 4:45Speaker 4: but I don't want to be a downer because usually-
- 4:48Speaker 4: I will rave about these meals, but tonight I'm not
- 4:50Speaker 4: even going to give it a rating because I will genuinely.
- 4:53Speaker 1: Just be so savage.
- 4:54Speaker 2: Let's just say it didn't hit the mark for me.
- 4:56Speaker 2: For reference, she had ordered a pumpkin soup with bread
- 5:01Speaker 2: for entree and what looked like a pad thai with
- 5:04Speaker 2: lots of chicken for main. To me, who's only experienced
- 5:08Speaker 2: cattle class, the food looked pretty nice. I'm disappointed that
- 5:12Speaker 2: Sarah didn't go there because I actually enjoy a savage
- 5:15Speaker 2: food review. I used to listen to Sam Magnan's podcast,
- 5:19Speaker 2: Literally Nobody Cares, and he is an avid first class
- 5:22Speaker 2: or business class flyer. And he would go into the
- 5:25Speaker 2: most hilarious detail about how shit some.
- 5:27Speaker 1: Of these meals actually were, but it was all a
- 5:29Speaker 1: bit of tongue and cheek.
- 5:30Speaker 2: I don't think that sort of review would have hit
- 5:33Speaker 2: the mark with Sarah's followers though, because we're in such
- 5:36Speaker 2: a tough economic crisis, the optics of complaining about flying
- 5:39Speaker 2: business class with your family of four whilst people can't
- 5:41Speaker 2: even afford to go on a holiday.
- 5:43Speaker 1: It doesn't look good.
- 5:44Speaker 2: I get all of that, but I don't understand then
- 5:45Speaker 2: why she shared anything about it. Well, I think it
- 5:48Speaker 2: sounded like the taste of the food wasn't her only problem.
- 5:51Speaker 2: It was also the time that the food was served.
- 5:53Speaker 2: So the entree was served at 9.30 PM. Mains came
- 5:57Speaker 2: out at 11.30 PM and breakfast was at 3 AM.
- 6:00Speaker 2: And she explained that because of these times, it was
- 6:03Speaker 2: very difficult to get her son Malachi down to sleep.
- 6:06Speaker 2: It must be so tough traveling with kids. I don't
- 6:09Speaker 2: have kids, but now that we've got a nephew, I'm like,
- 6:11Speaker 2: everything is 10 times harder.
- 6:12Speaker 1: When Kate brings him out.
- 6:14Speaker 2: But can you imagine how much more difficult it is
- 6:17Speaker 2: to get your kid to sleep in cattle class when
- 6:19Speaker 2: you don't have a bed and an individual spot for them? Well,
- 6:23Speaker 2: Sarah seems to have a thing with complaining about flights
- 6:25Speaker 2: to Hawaii because she caused a lot of controversy a
- 6:28Speaker 2: few years ago when she flew Hawaiian Airlines. And there
- 6:31Speaker 2: was a delay with her flight and she badmouthed the
- 6:34Speaker 2: airline so much. She had her followers reaching out to
- 6:37Speaker 2: the company to complain. Well, it's probably why she didn't
- 6:39Speaker 2: fly her one again. Maybe they wouldn't have her on board.
- 6:42Speaker 2: It's funny because she didn't actually point out that she
- 6:45Speaker 2: was flying Qantas in the video, but she did this
- 6:48Speaker 2: skincare routine in the bathroom, which says just how big
- 6:52Speaker 2: the first class and business class bathroom must be that
- 6:55Speaker 2: you'd want to be in there for longer than two seconds.
- 6:57Speaker 2: And she pulled on the iconic Qantas pajamas. So it
- 7:00Speaker 2: was quite clear who she was flying with. She was
- 7:02Speaker 2: quite mindful to point out that she's heavily pregnant and
- 7:05Speaker 2: she was very grateful for the lie down bed. But
- 7:08Speaker 2: she then said that she didn't get a wink of sleep.
- 7:09Speaker 2: So it was an interesting review. Now, this video was
- 7:13Speaker 2: juxtapositioned with Sarah then complaining about the cost of expensive
- 7:19Speaker 2: coffee in Hawaii.
- 7:20Speaker 1: Here's what she said.
- 7:22Speaker 3: Unfortunately for us, the Australian dollar, like a coffee here
- 7:28Speaker 3: is like a normal coffee price. Like let's say we
- 7:30Speaker 3: would get a $ 6 coffee. We're paying like, oh, we're
- 7:33Speaker 3: paying like $ 10 a coffee. Because when we transferred our money,
- 7:37Speaker 3: for every dollar we transferred, we got like 60 cents. Stub.
- 7:41Speaker 1: I've noticed this a lot with some influencers.
- 7:43Speaker 2: Where they'll drop all of this money on one thing,
- 7:47Speaker 2: but then cry poor or pretend that they're so relatable
- 7:50Speaker 2: by complaining about an everyday item like the.
- 7:53Speaker 1: Cost of a coffee.
- 7:53Speaker 2: It's their way to have a relatable moment with their
- 7:56Speaker 2: followers because the majority of the population loves to complain
- 8:00Speaker 2: about coffee and how overpriced it is. But it didn't
- 8:03Speaker 2: really land well seeing as we've just seen her drop
- 8:05Speaker 2: an excessive amount of money on flying business class with
- 8:08Speaker 2: a family of four.
- 8:09Speaker 1: Just to point out.
- 8:10Speaker 2: How expensive these tickets are, I searched Qantas at this
- 8:13Speaker 2: time of year and one business class ticket to Hawaii
- 8:17Speaker 2: from Sydney costs.
- 8:19Speaker 1: $ 6, 000.
- 8:19Speaker 2: So to fly business class return for a family of four,
- 8:24Speaker 2: that works out to $ 48, 000 and that is before you've
- 8:27Speaker 2: then spent money on accommodation and expensive coffees.
- 8:30Speaker 1: I wonder if.
- 8:31Speaker 2: This trip could be considered a tax deduction for Sarah
- 8:34Speaker 2: because she is filming her content over there.
- 8:37Speaker 1: Oh, surely not. I think that that would be a
- 8:39Speaker 1: bit of an over-exaggeration.
- 8:41Speaker 2: Yeah, but so many influencers would do it because they
- 8:44Speaker 2: are actually doing their job overseas. You might be able
- 8:47Speaker 2: to actually get some form of tax deduction for half
- 8:50Speaker 2: the trip, for example.
- 8:51Speaker 3: Mm-hmm.
- 8:52Speaker 2: Well, a follower did point out the irony of her
- 8:55Speaker 2: coffee complaint saying, it's slightly funny to spend that much
- 8:58Speaker 2: money on flights, but complain about the $ 10 coffee in Hawaii.
- 9:01Speaker 1: I'm sure that person was swiftly deleted.
- 9:03Speaker 2: Well, no. So the comment got 102 likes and Sarah
- 9:07Speaker 2: replied with a laughing face saying, it's the principle and
- 9:10Speaker 2: what I'm getting for money.
- 9:11Speaker 1: It makes sense in my mind.
- 9:13Speaker 2: I think the irony of this comment was further backed
- 9:16Speaker 2: up by the fact that they are staying at this
- 9:18Speaker 2: luxurious oceanfront villa.
- 9:20Speaker 1: This place looked absolutely insane.
- 9:22Speaker 2: You walk out the front and it's literally got the
- 9:24Speaker 2: grass which leads you down to the beach. I would
- 9:26Speaker 2: hate to think how much this cost. The whole thing
- 9:29Speaker 2: is it's her money and she can spend it however
- 9:31Speaker 2: she likes. But I think it just looks a bit
- 9:33Speaker 2: disingenuous when you're complaining about the cost of a coffee
- 9:36Speaker 2: and then you're staying at this kind of accommodation. Yeah.
- 9:39Speaker 2: It was quite interesting because at the end of Sarah's
- 9:42Speaker 2: video about Qantas, she finished by saying this.
- 9:46Speaker 1: I looked disgusting.
- 9:47Speaker 3: So it was a hat and sunnies for me and
- 9:49Speaker 3: honestly hide me from the world until I can just
- 9:51Speaker 3: lay in the sun.
- 9:53Speaker 2: And Sarah really didn't waste time spending her first day
- 9:56Speaker 2: of the holiday lying in the sun in a bikini
- 9:58Speaker 2: with no sun cream on. So the next day, probably
- 10:01Speaker 2: realizing it would be impossible to hide this burn as
- 10:04Speaker 2: she was red raw all over her pregnant belly and chest.
- 10:08Speaker 2: She addressed it on her stories, writing, I've been so
- 10:11Speaker 2: diligent in my adult years, but wow, I messed up
- 10:13Speaker 2: on day one of the Hawaiian sun after coming out
- 10:16Speaker 2: of Sydney winter. I don't even want to show you
- 10:18Speaker 2: the aftermath.
- 10:20Speaker 3: Anyway, I just wanted to update you here because I
- 10:22Speaker 3: left you hanging with that whole, like, I'm so mad
- 10:24Speaker 3: at my sunburn.
- 10:24Speaker 2: I am.
- 10:25Speaker 1: I'm mad at myself. I'm mad at myself.
- 10:28Speaker 3: I'm not even going to give you my excuse because it's, like, cringe.
- 10:31Speaker 3: My excuse, it's cringe, and it just makes no sense. Anyway,
- 10:37Speaker 3: sucks to be me, but not really.
- 10:39Speaker 1: It doesn't really suck to be me.
- 10:40Speaker 2: No.
- 10:40Speaker 3: Sucks for my skin and my future self with my skin, but,
- 10:44Speaker 3: you know, you win some, you lose some.
- 10:47Speaker 2: I want to reiterate that she pointed out that she
- 10:49Speaker 2: wasn't proud of this and she was quite embarrassed about it.
- 10:53Speaker 2: But despite being ashamed of the burn, she used it
- 10:56Speaker 2: as an opportunity to slip in what I guess she
- 10:59Speaker 2: saw as being an authentic ad. So she has been
- 11:02Speaker 2: working with skincare brand Esme for a number of years
- 11:05Speaker 2: now and uploaded a video whilst in Hawaii for their
- 11:09Speaker 2: after sun gel. The product describes itself as taking the
- 11:12Speaker 2: heat out of exposed skin with aloe vera calming sunburn.
- 11:17Speaker 1: Here's part of what she said in the ad.
- 11:20Speaker 3: Yay, we're here in Hawaii, but what is wrong with me?
- 11:22Speaker 3: How did I do this on day one? Like a
- 11:24Speaker 3: lot of you guys have commented and said that when
- 11:26Speaker 3: you're pregnant, you're more susceptible to sunburn, but no, I'm
- 11:29Speaker 3: just an idiot and I didn't reapply. So I don't
- 11:31Speaker 3: even think I had sunscreen on this day. I don't
- 11:33Speaker 3: even know.
- 11:33Speaker 1: It was day one.
- 11:34Speaker 3: Anyway, pro tip, if you do happen to get sunburned
- 11:36Speaker 3: or just even after a day in the sun, I
- 11:38Speaker 3: lather myself in this sun skills after sun gel. It
- 11:41Speaker 3: has both aloe vera and hyaluronic acid, green tea, peppermint extract.
- 11:45Speaker 3: It's just full of all the good stuff to rehydrate
- 11:47Speaker 3: your skin and just soothe any kind of burning.
- 11:50Speaker 2: I want to point out that nowhere in this reel,
- 11:52Speaker 2: all the countless stories that she uploaded about Esme, did
- 11:56Speaker 2: she include the word ad or paid.
- 11:58Speaker 1: Partnership, which is such a trend at the moment.
- 12:01Speaker 2: No one is using the paid partnership tools, which is
- 12:04Speaker 2: so disappointing. It infuriates me so much because it's really
- 12:07Speaker 2: not that difficult to do. And it's, I mean, it
- 12:10Speaker 2: is clear that it's an ad because she managed to
- 12:11Speaker 2: include her freshly updated 30% off code.
- 12:15Speaker 1: Surely though.
- 12:17Speaker 2: She hasn't just gone and burned herself in order to
- 12:20Speaker 2: promote this product. This was a thought that was echoed
- 12:22Speaker 2: by Influencer Updates AU. And I personally don't think that
- 12:26Speaker 2: she intentionally burnt herself for the sake of this content.
- 12:29Speaker 2: I don't think that she cares that much about her
- 12:32Speaker 2: partnership with Esme. I think that she thought perhaps on
- 12:36Speaker 2: this trip, she'd get more of a gradual tan when
- 12:38Speaker 2: she was over there and she could use the aloe
- 12:41Speaker 2: vera in some content.
- 12:43Speaker 1: She is very clever though. She knows what gets clicks.
- 12:45Speaker 2: And she explained on her story that she already had
- 12:48Speaker 2: 2000 people message her, giving her advice on her burn.
- 12:51Speaker 2: So she probably thought that this was a lucrative opportunity
- 12:54Speaker 2: for her ad to perform well. Maybe she could sign
- 12:57Speaker 2: Esme on for another year. I mean, I'd never heard
- 13:00Speaker 2: of this after sun gel. It sounds pretty good. Well,
- 13:04Speaker 2: she was obviously preempting a burn. It's funny because Sarah
- 13:07Speaker 2: said in her Instagram story, oh, I'm normally so good,
- 13:10Speaker 2: but She's had.
- 13:11Speaker 1: A real checkered past of promoting tanning.
- 13:14Speaker 2: Yeah, she's been criticized in the past for sharing about burns.
- 13:17Speaker 2: And she's known for someone who doesn't generally fake tan,
- 13:21Speaker 2: but she prefers to sit outside in the sun when
- 13:24Speaker 2: she's working on her computer in the hope of getting
- 13:26Speaker 2: a natural tan. And this is quite damaging rhetoric because
- 13:31Speaker 2: no tan is safe. Even if you're sitting out in
- 13:34Speaker 2: the sun and you're not getting burnt, that tan is
- 13:36Speaker 2: a sign that your skin is damaged. And despite the
- 13:39Speaker 2: fact that she said she felt ashamed, I felt like
- 13:41Speaker 2: she was kind of using that as a disclaimer to
- 13:44Speaker 2: then give her a free pass to show off the burn. Yeah,
- 13:47Speaker 2: because like it's this badge of honour sometimes. I've seen
- 13:50Speaker 2: so many influencers do this. You can tell they're proud
- 13:53Speaker 2: because they're like, oh, it's going to turn brown. I
- 13:54Speaker 2: have seen this a lot with a couple of the
- 13:56Speaker 2: UK influencers I follow and I understand that they don't
- 14:00Speaker 2: have the education in sun safety that we have in Australia,
- 14:03Speaker 2: but it is a really worrying trend. The era's tour
- 14:19Speaker 2: has become a safe place for so many Swifties. The
- 14:23Speaker 2: atmosphere is magical as fans exchange friendship bracelets and showcase
- 14:27Speaker 2: outfits that have been months in the making. Fans in
- 14:30Speaker 2: Vienna were preparing to have the night of their lives
- 14:33Speaker 2: unaware that four teenagers were planning a chilling terror plot. Sophie,
- 14:37Speaker 2: what has unfolded so far? Well, on Wednesday, authorities were
- 14:41Speaker 2: forced to cancel the Vienna leg of Taylor Swift's era's
- 14:44Speaker 2: tour after foiling a planned terrorist attack at the stadium. Now,
- 14:49Speaker 2: three teenagers have been arrested and one is being questioned
- 14:52Speaker 2: over the incident. Now, the main suspect has been revealed
- 14:56Speaker 2: as a 19-year-old called Baran A, who is an Austrian citizen.
- 15:01Speaker 2: He is believed to have pledged allegiance to Islamic State
- 15:04Speaker 2: in the last month, and has been radicalized online. He
- 15:08Speaker 2: had a 17-year-old, 18-year-old, and 15-year-old working as his accomplices. Now,
- 15:14Speaker 2: Bahrain confessed to planning to kill as many people as
- 15:18Speaker 2: possible outside the concert venue. He intended on carrying out
- 15:22Speaker 2: an attack in the area outside the stadium and by
- 15:25Speaker 2: driving his car into the crowds before using knives, machetes
- 15:29Speaker 2: and homemade explosive devices. Bomb-making materials were also found during
- 15:35Speaker 2: a raid of his house and what is even more
- 15:37Speaker 2: chilling is his 17-year-old accomplice is believed to have been
- 15:41Speaker 2: employed as a security guard for the concert and would
- 15:44Speaker 2: have carried out the attack from inside. If this had happened,
- 15:47Speaker 2: I just can't get over the absolute horror and confusion
- 15:50Speaker 2: that would have played out to think that a security
- 15:53Speaker 2: guard who is there to protect fans would then turn
- 15:56Speaker 2: into the attacker is just pure evil. It makes me
- 15:58Speaker 2: feel so sick. And think of it from a social
- 16:00Speaker 2: media perspective. Each night, this concert is live streamed. Everyone
- 16:05Speaker 2: has their phone out filming every moment for TikTok. There
- 16:08Speaker 2: would have been absolutely horrifying clips. And this is a
- 16:11Speaker 2: place predominantly where young women can unashamedly be themselves. They
- 16:15Speaker 2: can dance around, be silly, wear costumes. They're encouraged to
- 16:19Speaker 2: make friends with people in the crowd. It is also
- 16:22Speaker 2: so terrifying that not only were these teenagers planning to
- 16:25Speaker 2: set off a bomb, but they were going to cause
- 16:28Speaker 2: mass deaths through stabbing as many people as possible. And
- 16:32Speaker 2: this comes off the back of the Southport stabbing where
- 16:35Speaker 2: three little girls were stabbed to death at a Taylor
- 16:37Speaker 2: Swift theme.
- 16:38Speaker 1: Event in the UK.
- 16:39Speaker 2: And closer to home, just a couple of months ago,
- 16:42Speaker 2: we saw women and a baby being stabbed at Westfield
- 16:45Speaker 2: Bondi Junction. And that, again, was supposed to be such
- 16:48Speaker 2: a safe and happy space for women. I felt so
- 16:51Speaker 2: angry when I saw this come out because I've seen
- 16:54Speaker 2: so many recent videos of tens of thousands of fans
- 16:57Speaker 2: who wait outside the concert, all of those fans who
- 17:00Speaker 2: have been unable to get tickets. And the thought of
- 17:03Speaker 2: them being mowed down by cars just made me feel sick. Well,
- 17:08Speaker 2: whilst there were 65,000 fans expected in the stadium, around
- 17:10Speaker 2: 20,000 to 30,000 were going to be gathering outside. And
- 17:17Speaker 2: we saw incredible scenes in Germany recently where thousands of
- 17:20Speaker 2: fans swarmed a nearby hill to listen to the concert.
- 17:23Speaker 1: And it was such a.
- 17:24Speaker 2: Beautiful sight because the crowd was sitting there on picnic
- 17:27Speaker 2: rugs singing along to Taylor Swift. And it's disgusting to
- 17:31Speaker 2: think that someone would see this joy.
- 17:33Speaker 1: And think, how can I destroy this?
- 17:35Speaker 2: And how can I take this opportunity and turn it
- 17:38Speaker 2: into absolute chaos? Now, the main suspect told authorities that
- 17:42Speaker 2: he began planning this attack last month. So he he
- 17:46Speaker 2: uploaded to the internet his oath of allegiance to the
- 17:49Speaker 2: current head of ISIS two days before.
- 17:52Speaker 1: The planned attacks.
- 17:53Speaker 2: And it's so lucky that this tip-off came just a
- 17:55Speaker 2: day before the concert was going to take place. And
- 17:58Speaker 2: this actually came through US intelligence services who informed their
- 18:02Speaker 2: Austrian counterparts. Well, the first place I saw this announcement
- 18:05Speaker 2: was on Taylor Nation, which is Taylor's official management team.
- 18:09Speaker 2: And at the time of recording, Taylor Swift hasn't officially
- 18:13Speaker 2: posted about the cancellation, But there are reports she's offering
- 18:16Speaker 2: fans in Vienna the opportunity to go and watch the
- 18:19Speaker 2: era's tour for free at the movies. Yeah, well, for Taylor,
- 18:22Speaker 2: cancelling the show wouldn't come lightly. She has such a
- 18:25Speaker 2: genuine relationship with her fan base and she will do
- 18:28Speaker 2: anything to avoid letting them down. In an interview for
- 18:31Speaker 2: Time's Person of the Year, Taylor said cancelling a show
- 18:35Speaker 2: is nearly never an option. So she said, I know
- 18:38Speaker 2: I'm going on stage whether I'm sick, injured, heartbroken, uncomfortable
- 18:42Speaker 2: or stressed. That's part of my identity as a human
- 18:44Speaker 2: being now. If someone buys a ticket to my show,
- 18:47Speaker 2: I'm going to play it. Now since the cancellation, an
- 18:50Speaker 2: interview of Taylor discussing her biggest fears has also gone viral.
- 18:55Speaker 2: So in the 2019 interview with Elle, Taylor admitted that
- 18:59Speaker 2: her biggest fear is violence breaking out at one of
- 19:02Speaker 2: her concerts. And she recalled feeling terrified to go on
- 19:05Speaker 2: tour for her 2017 album Reputation with following a string
- 19:10Speaker 2: of violent attacks at recent festivals. So if you'll cast
- 19:13Speaker 2: your minds back to 2017, a suicide bomber killed 22
- 19:17Speaker 2: people and injured hundreds at Ariana Grande's concert in Manchester.
- 19:21Speaker 2: And five months later, a lone gunman murdered 58 people
- 19:25Speaker 2: at an outdoor country music festival in Las Vegas. Now,
- 19:28Speaker 2: Taylor said, I was completely terrified to go on tour
- 19:31Speaker 2: this time because I didn't know how we were going
- 19:33Speaker 2: to keep 3 million fans safe over seven months. She
- 19:37Speaker 2: did back it up by saying there was a tremendous
- 19:39Speaker 2: amount of planning, expenses and effort put into keeping her
- 19:42Speaker 2: fans safe during that tour. Another horrifying fact that Taylor
- 19:46Speaker 2: revealed after these events was that she now carries a
- 19:50Speaker 2: army grade bandage dressing, which is specifically used.
- 19:53Speaker 1: For gunshot or stab wounds.
- 19:55Speaker 2: This incident also comes less than a month after one
- 19:58Speaker 2: of Taylor Swift's suspected stalkers was arrested.
- 20:01Speaker 1: While trying to enter one of her German shows.
- 20:03Speaker 2: So an American man who hasn't been named came to
- 20:07Speaker 2: the attention of authorities after he allegedly made threats on
- 20:10Speaker 2: social media against Taylor Swift and also her boyfriend, Travis Kelsey. Now,
- 20:15Speaker 2: Travis was in attendance at the concert. And this is
- 20:19Speaker 2: just one of many stalkers that Taylor Swift has. In 2018...
- 20:23Speaker 2: She told Newsweek that she used facial recognition software at
- 20:27Speaker 2: her concerts to identify her known stalkers on a database.
- 20:31Speaker 2: I was going to say, is there just like a
- 20:32Speaker 2: print off of this man's photo at security?
- 20:34Speaker 1: No, it's much more high tech than that.
- 20:36Speaker 2: It is a really scary time for the couple because
- 20:39Speaker 2: only a week ago, Travis Kelsey and a teammate received
- 20:43Speaker 2: a threat where someone said that they were going to
- 20:44Speaker 2: shoot them at a concert they were at.
- 20:46Speaker 1: This wasn't a Taylor Swift concert. It was a Morgan
- 20:48Speaker 1: Wallen concert.
- 20:50Speaker 2: It's sad to see this because we saw during Coachella
- 20:53Speaker 2: that Taylor and Travis were out and about. They were
- 20:56Speaker 2: having a nice time at the festival. It seems like
- 21:00Speaker 2: they can't do this anymore after all of these threats.
- 21:02Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 21:03Speaker 2: There has been a lot of speculation around why Taylor
- 21:06Speaker 2: hasn't publicly commented on the incident because when a fan
- 21:10Speaker 2: died at one of her concerts in Brazil this year,
- 21:13Speaker 2: she put out a comment. She also put out a
- 21:14Speaker 2: comment about the Southport stabbing. So fans were anticipating that
- 21:19Speaker 2: she was going to say something about this incident.
- 21:21Speaker 1: I think it's because it's really unknown.
- 21:24Speaker 2: And she's probably been told by police, look.
- 21:26Speaker 1: You can't officially put any information out there.
- 21:28Speaker 2: Well, initially fans thought that Taylor and her team may
- 21:32Speaker 2: be holding off from making an announcement because they could
- 21:34Speaker 2: be considering cancelling her London shows because she's supposed to
- 21:39Speaker 2: be playing five shows at Wembley this week, which will
- 21:42Speaker 2: bring the European leg of her tour to a close.
- 21:45Speaker 2: And in the UK, there is just so much political
- 21:48Speaker 2: unrest at the moment. As we touched on two weeks ago,
- 21:50Speaker 2: there were those terrible stabbings. And Taylor said at the
- 21:53Speaker 2: time that she was in complete shock over that attack. Now,
- 21:57Speaker 2: London's mayor has confirmed that the concerts will go ahead,
- 22:01Speaker 2: saying we're going to carry on. And he confirmed that
- 22:04Speaker 2: authorities had adapted their surveillance of shows in London based
- 22:08Speaker 2: on what they learnt from the 2017 attack on Ariana
- 22:11Speaker 2: Grande's concert. I did see comments online. People were saying, well,
- 22:15Speaker 2: if Wembley is secure enough for the royal family, surely
- 22:18Speaker 2: it's secure enough for Taylor Swift. Yeah, and London has
- 22:20Speaker 2: had a lot of experience in handling these kind of
- 22:22Speaker 2: threats in the past. So out of any of the cities,
- 22:25Speaker 2: I think London is best suited to handle this situation. Well,
- 22:29Speaker 2: authorities would be hoping that this is an isolated incident.
- 22:32Speaker 2: I think that she stayed silent about these attacks because
- 22:35Speaker 2: she's received advice from counter-terrorist intelligence. So maybe they have
- 22:39Speaker 2: told her that if she makes.
- 22:41Speaker 1: A public response.
- 22:42Speaker 2: it could potentially fuel terrorists to target another show. Because
- 22:46Speaker 2: if she comes out and says, oh, this event has
- 22:49Speaker 2: hit me so hard, it could incite more violence because
- 22:52Speaker 2: they know that it had such an impact on her.
- 22:54Speaker 2: I think that performing in London could be a real
- 22:57Speaker 2: healing experience for Taylor and her fans. I think it's
- 23:00Speaker 2: their step in taking back the power. We have already
- 23:03Speaker 2: seen Swifties in Vienna sending the message that love is
- 23:06Speaker 2: stronger than terror. And these images have been going viral
- 23:09Speaker 2: on TikTok. we've seen Swifties flooding the streets of Vienna
- 23:13Speaker 2: to perform their own live rendition of the era's tour.
- 23:17Speaker 2: And these images are so powerful, particularly when Swifties marched
- 23:20Speaker 2: to the smallest man who ever lived, which seems to
- 23:24Speaker 2: be directed at the terrorist suspects.
- 23:26Speaker 1: Well, the lyric that.
- 23:27Speaker 2: Hit deep was when it said, you were sent by
- 23:30Speaker 2: someone who wanted me dead. They also sung Taylor's latest single,
- 23:34Speaker 2: I Can Do It With A Broken Heart, as well
- 23:36Speaker 2: as the 10 minute version of All Too Well. For
- 23:38Speaker 2: some reason, I just imagined middle-aged men wanting to go
- 23:42Speaker 2: out to the city to do some shopping and stumbling
- 23:44Speaker 2: upon this. Well, it's very defiant of them, especially because
- 23:47Speaker 2: of the threats that have been made to actually stand
- 23:50Speaker 2: together in such a large.
- 23:52Speaker 1: Group on the street.
- 23:53Speaker 2: Well, I think they felt safe because the suspects had
- 23:56Speaker 2: been arrested. And I think authorities said it seemed to
- 23:59Speaker 2: be an isolated incident. It was just such a wholesome
- 24:02Speaker 2: moment too, because There is another video going viral of
- 24:06Speaker 2: a bride and groom who were in.
- 24:08Speaker 1: The streets of Vienna.
- 24:09Speaker 2: They were hoping to get some photos and they ended
- 24:11Speaker 2: up being followed by hundreds of Swifties singing Love Story.
- 24:15Speaker 1: And have you seen it? Because this video is iconic.
- 24:19Speaker 2: It was just showing how love conquers everything. And one
- 24:22Speaker 2: follower commented saying that these photos remind them of the
- 24:25Speaker 2: Grinch movie. So in Hoosville, when the Grinch stole Christmas,
- 24:29Speaker 2: all of the citizens came out and sang carols together.
- 24:32Speaker 2: And I think that these videos are so lovely because
- 24:35Speaker 2: whilst we've seen the worst in humanity, it's also giving
- 24:39Speaker 2: us a view of the best in humanity and how
- 24:41Speaker 2: people are overcoming this.
- 24:43Speaker 5: Obviously there is.
- 24:44Speaker 1: You know, the media outlets, the gossip pages.
- 24:47Speaker 5: The journalists, the reporters, like all of the.
- 24:50Speaker 1: Above, you know, having a field day.
- 24:53Speaker 2: Former Married at First Sight contestants Ella and Dom have
- 24:57Speaker 2: officially pulled the pin on their controversial podcast, Sit With Us.
- 25:01Speaker 2: The announcement follows months of speculation about the podcaster's friendship.
- 25:05Speaker 1: Amy, can you tell us what happened?
- 25:07Speaker 2: Yeah, so on Thursday, Dom shared a statement in the
- 25:10Speaker 2: Sit With Us Facebook group saying she and Ella had
- 25:13Speaker 2: come to a joint decision to end the podcast. She wrote,
- 25:17Speaker 2: as I sit to write this, my heart is filled
- 25:19Speaker 2: with gratitude for each and every one of you. Over
- 25:22Speaker 2: the past two years, your unwavering support has meant the
- 25:24Speaker 2: world to me, and I want to take a moment
- 25:26Speaker 2: to express my deepest thanks. From the very beginning, Ella
- 25:30Speaker 2: and I dreamed of building something special, but we could
- 25:33Speaker 2: never have imagined the amazing community that would grow from
- 25:36Speaker 2: our idea. Each episode, each discussion is Each shared story
- 25:40Speaker 2: has been a labor of love and know that our
- 25:42Speaker 2: content has resonated with people from all corners of the
- 25:45Speaker 2: world has been beyond rewarding. Now, Dom went on to
- 25:48Speaker 2: thank the OG listeners for their feedback, engagement and encouragement
- 25:52Speaker 2: and said it was important they heard about the decision
- 25:54Speaker 2: directly from her. Now, following the statement, the sit with
- 25:58Speaker 2: us Instagram and TikTok account were all deleted. I wonder
- 26:02Speaker 2: if they're deleted or archived because surely someone wants to
- 26:06Speaker 2: use that page for a different business.
- 26:07Speaker 1: But Maybe if there.
- 26:09Speaker 2: Is something going on behind the scenes with this friendship,
- 26:12Speaker 2: no one wants to actually take the account yet because.
- 26:14Speaker 1: That would cause more trouble.
- 26:15Speaker 2: Well, Ella was a notable absentee from this statement. And
- 26:19Speaker 2: as you said, it led many people to speculate that
- 26:22Speaker 2: a friendship breakdown could be one of the main reasons
- 26:24Speaker 2: for the podcast coming to an end. The other reason
- 26:28Speaker 2: was due to widespread backlash the podcasters received.
- 26:31Speaker 1: And this was for.
- 26:32Speaker 2: Platforming maths villain Jack on their show, who controversially told
- 26:36Speaker 2: a contestant to muzzle his wife. Now, this episode attracted
- 26:40Speaker 2: the attention of Abby Chatfield, who dedicated a whole episode
- 26:44Speaker 2: on her own podcast to slamming Ella and Dom's decision
- 26:48Speaker 2: to give Jack a platform. And it also led to
- 26:51Speaker 2: Ella and Dom losing tens of thousands of followers on Instagram. Interestingly, though,
- 26:56Speaker 2: Dom Copp, most of the criticism and she ended up
- 27:00Speaker 2: checking herself into a mental health facility following all the
- 27:03Speaker 2: backlash because it just became too much for her to
- 27:05Speaker 2: bear now as reported by so dramatic rumors have been
- 27:08Speaker 2: flying that ella was trying to distance herself from dom
- 27:12Speaker 2: following the controversy the pair also haven't been seen together
- 27:16Speaker 2: for months and haven't been liking or commenting on one
- 27:20Speaker 2: another's photos which i think is a telltale sign that
- 27:23Speaker 2: perhaps this friendship is over So Dramatic also reported that
- 27:27Speaker 2: Dom has deleted photos from Ella's wedding.
- 27:31Speaker 1: This seems like a breakup. It's a friendship breakup.
- 27:33Speaker 2: Well, Ella broke her silence on Friday and she addressed
- 27:37Speaker 2: the end of the podcast by releasing an Instagram story.
- 27:40Speaker 1: Let's have a listen.
- 27:42Speaker 5: I wanted to make my personal comment on the Sit
- 27:47Speaker 5: With Us podcast and how, yes, it has come to
- 27:50Speaker 5: an end.
- 27:51Speaker 1: And it's not a sad thing.
- 27:53Speaker 5: It's not a bad thing.
- 27:54Speaker 1: It's a positive.
- 27:55Speaker 5: It's exciting.
- 27:56Speaker 2: Ella then took a swipe at the media saying not
- 27:59Speaker 2: to believe everything you read online.
- 28:01Speaker 1: Let's have a listen.
- 28:03Speaker 5: Just want to remind you guys to not believe everything
- 28:06Speaker 5: that you read online if you haven't learned from the past.
- 28:11Speaker 1: But that is up to you.
- 28:13Speaker 5: That is completely your choice. But just want to say
- 28:15Speaker 5: here that there is.
- 28:17Speaker 1: No issues with Domini.
- 28:19Speaker 5: There is no problems.
- 28:21Speaker 4: It is just fun.
- 28:22Speaker 5: A chapter closing, and that is okay. And all good
- 28:25Speaker 5: things do come.
- 28:26Speaker 4: To an end.
- 28:28Speaker 2: It really shows how damaging that one episode was for
- 28:31Speaker 2: their overall brand. Yeah, well, what's really fascinating is that
- 28:34Speaker 2: the Sit With Us podcast actually had their best month
- 28:37Speaker 2: when the controversial episode dropped.
- 28:40Speaker 1: So that month, they had.
- 28:41Speaker 2: 140,000 people who listened to their podcast compared to the
- 28:45Speaker 2: month prior.
- 28:46Speaker 1: When it was only 50,000 listeners.
- 28:48Speaker 2: So it really shows that controversy does get listeners, but
- 28:52Speaker 2: it can have long lasting damaging effects to your brand.
- 28:54Speaker 2: So this just makes me think that clearly they have
- 28:57Speaker 2: stopped their podcast because their friendship is over. Because if
- 29:00Speaker 2: you have almost tripled your audience by creating controversy. why
- 29:06Speaker 2: wouldn't you then have, you know, they've had their time off.
- 29:09Speaker 2: Dom's gone into the mental health facility.
- 29:11Speaker 1: She's got better. They've given it a break. Why wouldn't
- 29:13Speaker 1: you come back bigger and better than ever? I agree
- 29:16Speaker 1: with you.
- 29:16Speaker 2: I think there's been a clear rift in this friendship.
- 29:18Speaker 2: And I think it started over this episode because maybe
- 29:21Speaker 2: Dom felt like she was copping the blame and she
- 29:23Speaker 2: didn't feel supported by Ella. However, if you think about it,
- 29:27Speaker 2: There has been so much backlash about this episode. I
- 29:31Speaker 2: can't imagine a lot of brands would want to align
- 29:33Speaker 2: themselves with this podcast. I disagree because aren't Dom and
- 29:37Speaker 2: Ella still working as influencers? They're probably not finding it
- 29:40Speaker 2: difficult to get jobs. Dom hasn't had a sponsored post
- 29:43Speaker 2: since the incident, whereas Ella has had a number of
- 29:46Speaker 2: sponsored posts, but that's due to the fact that Ella
- 29:49Speaker 2: didn't cop it half as much as Dom did. Well,
- 29:52Speaker 2: I think that's all we've got time for today. Thank
- 29:54Speaker 2: you so much for listening to another episode of Outspoken.
- 29:57Speaker 2: Don't forget to go and follow us on Instagram and
- 30:00Speaker 2: on TikTok at Outspoken underscore the underscore podcast. Thank you
- 30:04Speaker 2: for all of the positive feedback we had on our
- 30:06Speaker 2: video about the Olympic chocolate muffins. If you want to
- 30:09Speaker 2: see more cooking stuff, let us know. We want to
- 30:10Speaker 2: do a few more trends. This episode was recorded on
- 30:14Speaker 2: the traditional land of the Kaurna people of the Adelaide Plains.
- 30:17Speaker 1: We pay respect to elders past and present.
- 30:26Speaker 3: Thank you.
