  if you just read the Gospels in a straightforward and contextual

  manner, you will see that Jesus was an only child.

  And what's the point of claiming this?

  Well, if Jesus was an only child, this would prove that

  Mary was a perpetual virgin, thus proving a Catholic

  tradition to be true. And in case you don't believe me

  that they're actually making these kind of arguments, let's

  look at a prime example of this. You see right here on the screen

  a tweet by Jack Poso, or Jack Posobiak I think is how you

  pronounce his name. Conservative influencer seems to

  be falling into the Catholicism rut and he posted the other day

  it's just a common sense reading of the gospel that Jesus was an

  only child. No brothers at Bethlehem, no

  brothers at the temple, at the wedding, at the cross.

  The mentions of brothers meant close relations in the context

  of the time. There really isn't anything else

  to it, and we can see in the comments below guy named Braden

  told him perpetual virginity and Jack Posto said Amen.

  And that's really the point of Catholics claiming on the

  Internet that Jesus was an only child and that the Gospels

  allegedly support this. If it's true that Jesus was an

  only child, then you could make a scriptural argument for Mary

  being a perpetual virgin, which is one of the many traditions
• 2:23
  that Catholics have created regarding Mary.

  Oh wait, what's that? Oh, we're getting a phone call

  let's let it do its thing. I responded to Jack Poso's post

  by saying dude, Mark 6/1 through three literally names Jesus's

  brothers and says that Jesus had sisters too.

  Claiming that Jesus was an only child is not only historically

  and biblically wrong, it's downright heresy.

  Now let's get into these passages.

  As a matter of fact, I think we're going to start in John

  Chapter 7 before we get into Mark chapter 6, because in John

  Chapter 7 we see Jesus have an actual conversation with his

  brothers. We read in John Chapter 7,

  verses one through 10, the following.

  After this, Jesus went around in Galilee.

  He did not want to go about in Judea because the Jewish leaders
• 3:27
  there were looking for a way to kill him.

  But when the Jewish festival of tabernacles was near, Jesus's

  brother said to him, Leave Galilee and go to Judea, so that

  your disciples there may see the works you do.

  No one who wants to become a public figure acts in secret.

  Since you are doing these things, show yourself to the

  world. For even his own brothers did

  not believe in him. Therefore Jesus told them, My

  time is not yet here for you. Any time will do.

  The world cannot hate you, but it hates me, because I testify

  that its works are evil. You go to the festival.

  that Jesus's brothers did not believe that Jesus was who Jesus

  claimed to be, and so they were encouraging him to show himself

  to the world and let the world see all of the things he was

  doing. But in case you're wondering if

  Jesus was actually talking to his brothers or not, let's go to

  Mark chapter 6, verses one through 6, which says the

  following. Jesus left there and went to his
• 4:45
  hometown accompanied by his disciples.

  When the Sabbath came, he began to teach in the synagogue, and
• 4:51
  many who heard him were amazed. Where did this man get these
• 4:55
  things? They asked, what's this wisdom
• 4:57
  that has been given him? What are these remarkable
• 5:00
  miracles he is performing? Isn't this the Carpenter?

  Isn't this Mary's son and the brother of James, Joseph, Judas,
• 5:09
  and Simon? Aren't his sisters here with us?

  And they took offense at him. Jesus said to them, a prophet is
• 5:16
  not without honor except in his own town, among his relatives,
• 5:20
  and in his own home. He cannot do any miracles there
• 5:24
  except lay his hands on a few sick people and heal them.

  He was amazed at their lack of faith.

  Now notice what happens here. These people in Jesus's hometown
• 5:36
  are witnessing Jesus teach, and what do they do?

  Instead of accepting his teachings, they began to
• 5:43
  criticize him like, hey, wait a minute, isn't this the
• 5:46
  Carpenter? Isn't this the son of Mary?
• 5:49
  Isn't this the brother of James, Joseph, Judas, and Simon?

  Aren't his sisters among us? And therefore they took offence
• 5:56
  at his teachings because of the fact that Jesus was one of them.

  And notice what Jesus says? He says a prophet is not without
• 6:05
  honor except in his own town, among his relatives, and in his
• 6:09
  own home. He cannot do any miracles there
• 6:12
  because of their lack of faith. So notice how Jesus acknowledges
• 6:16
  that he was with his relatives. And notice how the people
• 6:20
  criticizing him says that James, Joseph, Judas, and Simon were
• 6:24
  Jesus's brothers. And they said this in the same
• 6:28
  sentence that acknowledges that Jesus is the son of Mary.

  I don't see these Catholics denying that Jesus is Mary's
• 6:35
  son, and yet they're not willing to acknowledge that James,
• 6:39
  Joseph, Judas, and Simon are his literal brothers named right
• 6:44
  here in the gospels. And it mentions that Jesus had

  sisters too. Where did all these brothers and
• 6:50
  sisters come from if Mary was a perpetual virgin?

  Oh, that's right, she's not a perpetual virgin.

  Mary had sex with her husband many times and gave Jesus four

  brothers and sisters. Her and Joseph were quite busy,

  it turns out. Turns out that virginity was

  only a sign to basically foretell, announce to the world

  that Jesus the Messiah had arrived.

  If Mary had been a perpetual virgin and yet gave birth to all

  these brothers and sisters of Jesus, well then you could argue

  that they're all chosen ones. They're all messiahs of sort.

  But no, her being a virgin when Jesus was born was limited to

  just Jesus. And in case you are wondering if

  there's a parallel passage to the Mark chapter 6 passage we

  read, here there is. And Matthew 1353 through 58, we

  read, when Jesus had finished these parables, he moved on from

  there, coming to his hometown. He began teaching the people in

  their synagogue. And they were amazed.

  Where did this man get this wisdom and these miraculous

  powers? They asked, Isn't this the

  carpenter's son? Isn't his mother's name Mary?

  And aren't his brothers James, Joseph, Simon, and Judas?

  Aren't all his sisters with us? When did this man get all these

  things? And they took offense at him.

  But Jesus said to them, a prophet is not without honor

  except in his own town and in his own home.

  And he did not do many miracles there because of their lack of

  faith. Now notice how Jesus said that a

  Who's he referring to with the home?

  Well, his critics just said, hey, that's Mary's son.

  His brothers are James, Joseph, Simon and Judas, and his sisters

  are among us. So where did he get these

  miraculous powers and this wisdom?

  And they refused to accept his teaching because of the fact

  that his brothers and sisters were among them and not like his
• 8:58
  disciples. We're talking about his Blood

  Brothers, his blood sisters that Mary and Joseph gave birth to

  after Jesus was born. So yes, it is obvious from a

  straightforward contextual reading of the three passages in

  the Gospels that we looked at that Jesus was not an only

  child. He had four brothers, their
• 9:20
  names being James, Joseph, Simon, and Judas.

  And he had sisters, according to these passages.

  And yet, according to Jack Posto, just a plain reading of

  the gospel shows us that Jesus was an only child.

  and your dogma which is wrong. The people in Nazareth didn't

  believe in Jesus because they knew his brothers and sisters.

  They saw him as a normal guy. They even named his siblings

  Josephus. The contemporary Jewish Roman

  historian even refers to the death of James and calls him the

  brother of Jesus, who was called Christ.

  Outside of dogmatic circles, no scholar takes any of these

  passages and tries to twist the original language into something

  it didn't mean the Lord Jesus had siblings.

  They're mentioned, they're named, and even outside of

  scriptures, one of them is named and his martyrdom recorded by

  the most important contemporary historian of the time.

  even named outside of the Scriptures.

  have sisters. And so this makes Catholic

  apologists like Jack Poso heretics in relation to the
