Transcript
- 0:00Okay.
- 0:01I don't think most homeschool problems are actually curriculum problems.
- 0:07Welcome back to Making Everyday Magic.
- 0:09My name is Shanna.
- 0:10If you are new here we are a homeschooling family of four.
- 0:13We are entering our 10th year of homeschooling.
- 0:16That's right, a full on decade.
- 0:18And today I want to talk with you about something
- 0:22that you may not even realize is bringing you tons of success, or
- 0:28is your imminent failure
- 0:30when it comes to homeschool?
- 0:36Before we go any further, please scroll down and hit the big red subscribe button.
- 0:39Turn on the bell for notifications and give this video a thumbs up.
- 0:41As always, you can find me right on down in the comments
- 0:43or over on Instagram at Making Everyday Magic. Hi!
- 0:47This is going to be another uncomfortable conversation with Shawna.
- 0:51Guess what?
- 0:52It's important to me to have these conversations. Why?
- 0:55Because it comes up to me in my real life.
- 0:59Or I see things and I'm like,
- 1:02We should talk about it.
- 1:03Because often, as you guys know, if you saw a recent video,
- 1:07I say the thing and then people are like oh my gosh it's the thing.
- 1:10And oh I thought the same thing and I'm so glad somebody said the thing.
- 1:12And then we talked about the thing.
- 1:14And then the world gets a little less
- 1:17mystified and change happens
- 1:20and progress happens and it is good and it is important to say the things.
- 1:24So I am here today to say the latest thing
- 1:27that I realized we as homeschool parents will,
- 1:32if we're having a struggle, we will change everything.
- 1:36We will change our planner.
- 1:37We will change curriculum.
- 1:38We will change so many things.
- 1:42We will eliminate food dyes.
- 1:45We will detox our children.
- 1:48We will reach richer.
- 1:50We will do every single wool thing.
- 1:52That isn't the thing that I think makes the most difference.
- 1:55And I think the thing that makes the most difference is
- 1:59you. Yeah.
- 2:01You did. You know, it's you as a mother.
- 2:04I have been a mother for 14 years, over 14 years now.
- 2:08And as somebody who had a mother,
- 2:10I want you to recognize that
- 2:16your attitude impacts every single person in your home
- 2:21as a parent, as a member of society, as a member of a group, as the person
- 2:25who homeschools your children, your attitude
- 2:29impacts everyone, your expectations,
- 2:34your tolerance, what you do, what you say, how you act.
- 2:40The tone of your voice impacts every single person that you live with.
- 2:46And honestly, it spreads and it infects like a fungus.
- 2:50It truly, truly does.
- 2:52If you're in a bad mood
- 2:53and you take it out on the next person, that person takes it out on somebody else.
- 2:56It is a wicked web of crazy.
- 2:58And I don't think that we talk about this enough in homeschool.
- 3:01As parents, in this day and age, everything is crazy.
- 3:05Everything is expensive.
- 3:06The noise from the news is something
- 3:09that we genuinely couldn't fabricate if we tried.
- 3:13It is intense. It is crazy.
- 3:15It is overwhelming.
- 3:16We are genuinely more work to more stressed, more informed,
- 3:21to a completely negative degree than we have ever been
- 3:25as humans, as mammals, as parents, as homeschoolers,
- 3:30as educators, as women, as men, as friends, as everything.
- 3:35It is so important to recognize
- 3:39that we are the point of change in our homeschool.
- 3:43Are we always the defining moment of success or failure?
- 3:46No, we're not, but are we almost always the first point of success or failure?
- 3:52Yes, we are, and I think we take that for granted.
- 3:55I don't think that we realize how completely we are
- 4:01impacting our home for children,
- 4:04our relationships and our homeschool.
- 4:07I genuinely think that we as homeschool parents, spend
- 4:10an incredible amount of time trying to fix the wrong things.
- 4:16It isn't the curriculum, it's your reaction to the curriculum.
- 4:21It isn't that
- 4:24you don't want to be with
- 4:26your kids, it's that being with your kids can be really hard.
- 4:29There's a reason that so many people, when you say,
- 4:31oh, I'm going to homeschool, so many people are like, I could never do that.
- 4:34I could never be with my kids that much.
- 4:37I need a break.
- 4:38I need those things.
- 4:39It's really important to recognize when that's true. And
- 4:43if you are somebody who
- 4:46recognizes that they get frazzled easily, that they get upset that their attitude,
- 4:53their internal temperature impacts
- 4:56those around you and your homeschool.
- 4:59If you carry in a bad relationship with math and it just stresses you out,
- 5:03how are you supposed to help your learner with math?
- 5:06How are you supposed to do the things?
- 5:07How are you supposed to model
- 5:09to your children what it looks like to overcome adversity?
- 5:12Because let's not kid learning isn't linear, okay?
- 5:15It's not just a slope straight up. It's hard.
- 5:17It can get messy, and it can be a situation
- 5:20where your kids need you to be able to model calm, reassurance.
- 5:25We have a saying in our house, you can't learn.
- 5:27Like if you're fussy and you're grumpy, your brain is overloaded.
- 5:31You literally cannot learn.
- 5:32Everybody is best served if we take a break, if we reset.
- 5:36It is important to me that we notice that we are burnt out,
- 5:41that we are overwhelmed, and I don't think enough people talk about
- 5:46the impact on homeschool
- 5:49by the people in charge of homeschool.
- 5:54My home was always this way.
- 5:55My home is this way.
- 5:57I, whether I want to be or not, set the tone for my home.
- 6:02And it is that way with my spouse and with my kids.
- 6:05And no. Do I want that much responsibility?
- 6:06Absolutely not.
- 6:07Do I feel like I deserve that much responsibility?
- 6:10Absolutely not.
- 6:11But being the default homeschooler, the default parent, because I
- 6:15literally have the most face time, my reactions, my
- 6:21emotions, my stress level
- 6:25directly impacts everything that goes on in my heart.
- 6:29So if I get up on a Saturday morning and I'm rage cleaning people now,
- 6:33something's that something's going crazy.
- 6:35This applies to your high school.
- 6:36If you wake up late, if something isn't the way you need it to be on a Tuesday
- 6:41and you just are in a bad mood, I guarantee
- 6:44you only more wheels will fall off as your day goes on.
- 6:49Okay, it is not going to get back on track unless you actively put your train
- 6:53back on the track.
- 6:54I want you to recognize that this is hard.
- 7:00Life is hard.
- 7:01Adulting is hard. Female.
- 7:04Hard American hard.
- 7:08Living is hard. Bill paying is hard.
- 7:10Homeschooling is no exception.
- 7:12And what you bring to it is what you're going to get out of it.
- 7:16So, so many people will talk about how their kids have a really bad attitude
- 7:19when it comes to homeschooling.
- 7:20Have you put the steps in place to make sure that they know
- 7:24what to expect, and then made sure
- 7:27that what you are putting out into your homeschool is expected?
- 7:31Have you put your kids in a place where they know
- 7:34what every day is going to look like,
- 7:36what their schedule should look like, how they can serve themselves,
- 7:39what the mornings look like, what time do we get up?
- 7:42How do we start those things?
- 7:43By having consistency in our homeschool,
- 7:46I know that I am better able to serve those in our homeschool.
- 7:51My routine is more predictable.
- 7:52I like to get up before the kids. Why?
- 7:54Because I like to have already gone
- 7:56through whatever needs to happen in my day before I see my children.
- 8:00If my kids are up first, it throws me off and then I'm not having the best day.
- 8:04I need a quiet cup of coffee,
- 8:05and I need to have mentally run through my day
- 8:08to know what to expect and what needs to happen before I have
- 8:11other people asking me what to expect and what needs to happen.
- 8:14We have consistency.
- 8:16We have a schedule.
- 8:17We have systems in place that keep me from being the primary load
- 8:23bearer in this structure that we call our homeschool and our family.
- 8:28By doing these things, it helps keep me in an emotional
- 8:32setting that is good for everyone.
- 8:36I want you to recognize that how you show up
- 8:41directly impacts what is happening in your home and your homeschool.
- 8:45It is so important.
- 8:46So many people. I've never heard anybody talk about this.
- 8:49I have never heard anybody put it together.
- 8:51That what you do when you show up is what you're going to get
- 8:56out of your homeschool, out of your home, out of your family, out of your kids.
- 8:59So if you show up to a place where you don't want to be,
- 9:02why would they want to be here?
- 9:03If you show up in your already stressed, they're going to show up already stressed
- 9:07because you're snippy, because you have an attitude,
- 9:09because you genuinely
- 9:10don't have the capacity to be doing the thing that they need from you.
- 9:13It is so important that as mothers, as women, as parents, as homeschoolers,
- 9:18as as anybody that we show up,
- 9:21if we're going to bother showing up, show up and give people the best of you.
- 9:26There is no situation in the entire world that I can think of
- 9:29is more important than in your homeschool, with your children.
- 9:33Your children deserve the best of you.
- 9:36They just automatically do.
- 9:38They are granted the wonderful cosmic burden, the wonderful
- 9:43cosmic expectation to believe that they are getting the best of you.
- 9:47More often.
- 9:47They will be the biggest fans you will ever have in your entire life,
- 9:50your children.
- 9:51So if you can show up and give the best of yourself to them,
- 9:54you're going to get the best of them for you and for you, for your home,
- 9:59for your homeschool.
- 10:00Okay, so if you are having a lot of pushback
- 10:02and a lot of strife and a lot of stress, then you're wondering what's happening.
- 10:06First and foremost, start with you.
- 10:09What energy are you bringing?
- 10:12And keep in mind that this could be that you are bringing doormat energy,
- 10:16and that's the wrong energy to bring to okay?
- 10:19Don't be Reiji, don't be a doormat.
- 10:21Bring the right energy to your home and homeschooling your children.
- 10:25Okay, that is the most important thing that you can do.
- 10:27Make sure that everyone knows what to expect.
- 10:30Even my husband,
- 10:31who is rarely here for homeschool, knows exactly how our homeschool runs.
- 10:35He may not know what page we're on,
- 10:36but he knows exactly how to step in and make sure it gets done.
- 10:40Because we have expectations, we have routines, and we have consistency.
- 10:43It is so important and I want you to hear this.
- 10:46If you don't hear anything else, how you show up, you're the captain of the ship.
- 10:52You're watching this video.
- 10:53That means you are, in all likelihood, the primary caregiver of your children.
- 10:55Whether you are a mother or father, I do not care.
- 10:58You are the primary caregiver of the children in your charge,
- 11:02and that means that your tone sets the course of the ship.
- 11:07Are we in terrible, torrential, raging waters, or are we
- 11:10smooth sailing, happily rafting down an easy river?
- 11:13It is up to you and you decide that.
- 11:15I'm not saying they're not going to show up and try to sink your battleship.
- 11:19I'm not saying that, but what I am saying is,
- 11:21the most consistent indicator of the way it's going to go is going to be.
- 11:25You guys, I hope that you found this helpful, entertaining, or informative.
- 11:29If you did, please scroll down,
- 11:31hit that big red subscribe button and turn on the bell for notifications.
- 11:34I want you to remember because I need this reminder.
- 11:38I need this reminder. Often I tend to get a little frantic.
- 11:41I tend to get a little high energy.
- 11:42I tend to get a little stressful.
- 11:44No one in my house appreciates this.
- 11:47And then it festers and it builds and it kind of like ricochets off of everyone.
- 11:51And the energy is just increasing and increasing and increasing and increasing.
- 11:54Not in a good way.
- 11:56So it is important for me to realize that often
- 11:59I set the thermostat, I set the temperature in our home.
- 12:03I do whether I want the job or not.
- 12:05It's true, and it is on me to make sure
- 12:09that the temperature is set at the right place.
- 12:11I can't control if it goes off the rails after that, but
- 12:13what I can do is make sure that my energy and my attitude
- 12:17shows up in a manner that's going to best serve the outcomes I want,
- 12:21which is educated, children, happy, well loved, well cared for children.
- 12:26That's what I want to happen in my home.
- 12:28And that means that I need to have my hand on the steering wheel.
- 12:32Okay, so I can't get too emotional. I can't get crazy.
- 12:34We're not having yelling matches.
- 12:36We're not screaming at each other.
- 12:38Those aren't things that are happening.
- 12:39I'm not threatening. I'm not being ugly.
- 12:41I'm not being inconsistent because that's another problem.
- 12:43If you're not showing up,
- 12:45if you're not setting the time to get to the place,
- 12:47if you aren't consistently making sure your kids know what to expect
- 12:50and following through, that is a recipe for disaster.
- 12:55So just a reminder that you are you are super cool
- 13:00and you are one of the most important parts of your homeschool.
- 13:05So please, while it is a great responsibility.
- 13:08It is a great gift.
- 13:10The people around you are going to mirror those those emotions for you.
- 13:15They're going to want to make you happier.
- 13:17If you're already happy, they're going to want to spend
- 13:19the time with you that homeschooling takes if you're more pleasant to be around.
- 13:23So just a reminder, because again, it is a reminder that I often need
- 13:28that you have so much impact,
- 13:31you don't even realize how much impact you have, how important you are
- 13:35to the success of those around you simply by having a good attitude.
- 13:40So let me know.
- 13:42I have definitely said some irrational things, but what?
- 13:45What do you think is important for you?
- 13:49For you to kind of set the tone for your home, for homeschool, for your children?
- 13:54I would love to hear it down in the comments.
- 13:57Together guys, let's keep making everyday magic.
