- 2:38SPEAKER_03: Yeah, my lighting there.
- 2:39SPEAKER_03: That's better now.
- 2:39SPEAKER_05: It's not lighting.

- 5:32SPEAKER_00: We need brochet is a pike and what's a pickrel, though, I wonder.
- 5:36SPEAKER_03: Dore.
- 5:37SPEAKER_03: Oh, pickerel.
- 5:38SPEAKER_03: Oh.
- 5:38SPEAKER_05: Well, it depends on who you ask.
- 5:40SPEAKER_05: It depends.
- 5:41SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 5:41SPEAKER_03: We should ask our countess.
- 5:43SPEAKER_03: I think this is the only the right way to do this is to ask the countess because I'll I'll just munch it right up.
- 5:47SPEAKER_03: It'll be not good for me.
- 5:49SPEAKER_03: I thought it was.
- 5:55SPEAKER_03: You know.
- 5:56SPEAKER_03: Beautiful.
- 5:57SPEAKER_03: I love it.
- 5:58SPEAKER_03: And I said sport fishing.
- 5:59SPEAKER_03: Thank you, Dean.
- 6:00SPEAKER_03: That's exactly what that was.
- 6:02SPEAKER_03: A bunch of bullshit for those that know.
- 6:05SPEAKER_05: Um listener feedback.
- 6:09SPEAKER_05: Let's move on to listener feedback.
- 6:12SPEAKER_05: In response to a post that was recently uh put out there.
- 6:16SPEAKER_05: I didn't see it, by the way.
- 6:18SPEAKER_05: So technically you're not looking at our posts.
- 6:20SPEAKER_05: Technically, that should not have gone out without my approval.
- 6:24SPEAKER_03: Uh it's it was it was a fun one.
- 6:26SPEAKER_03: So the fun ones we do without your approval because we don't want you to sni ick snay it and poo-poo it in case I mean we want everybody to have fun.
- 6:34SPEAKER_03: So because if you don't want to have fun, we have to have those uh, you know.
- 6:37SPEAKER_03: Girls just want to have fun.
- 6:38SPEAKER_03: Exactly, Nico.
- 6:40SPEAKER_03: Who did that song?
- 6:41SPEAKER_03: Quick.
- 6:41SPEAKER_03: Uh, uh, I think you're right.
- 6:45SPEAKER_05: Yeah, yeah.
- 6:46SPEAKER_07: Oh, I was not.
- 6:47SPEAKER_05: No.
- 6:48SPEAKER_05: Um where were we?
- 6:51SPEAKER_03: We were you were giving a shit for posting something that you're without my approval.
- 6:54SPEAKER_02: Without your approval.
- 6:56SPEAKER_03: It was a good post.
- 6:57SPEAKER_05: It was a nice little post.
- 6:58SPEAKER_05: In response to that, uh unapproved post.
- 7:02SPEAKER_05: Greg Fear via Instagram.
- 7:04SPEAKER_05: Now he's a regular, isn't he, Greg?
- 7:06SPEAKER_03: Is that our G Fear guy, Dino?
- 7:09SPEAKER_00: That's him.
- 7:09SPEAKER_00: That's him.
- 7:10SPEAKER_00: This is him coming in on Instagram, though.
- 7:12SPEAKER_00: Normally he's on YouTube at G Fear.
- 7:13SPEAKER_00: Oh, he's following us from everywhere.
- 7:15SPEAKER_03: He's coming all angles now.
- 7:17SPEAKER_05: Uh Greg Fear via Instagram says, All I'm saying, this would make for a very entertaining episode.
- 7:24SPEAKER_05: These catches best not end up uh I'm I'm assuming he says on the cutting room floor.
- 7:32SPEAKER_05: Or better yet, have a YouTube exclusive blooper reel episode for season 41 where these are shown.
- 7:40SPEAKER_05: Now, the these that he's referring to.
- 7:44SPEAKER_03: These would be was a goby.
- 7:46SPEAKER_03: Yeah, trout perch.
- 7:48SPEAKER_00: A trout perch.
- 7:49SPEAKER_03: Trout perch.
- 7:50SPEAKER_00: A perch.
- 7:51SPEAKER_00: I had a little perch, but this is from years ago.
- 7:53SPEAKER_00: And then you had a little walleye, right, Pete?
- 7:55SPEAKER_03: No, I had a little small mouth or a large mouth.
- 7:58SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 7:59SPEAKER_03: One of the two, tiny, but they were all Piquitos, very tiny fish.
- 8:04SPEAKER_03: Um, and we just thought we'd post it up because uh, but the thing is, G-Fear, um, we normally don't shoot that stuff.
- 8:12SPEAKER_03: You know, we get a shoot, we get a fish like that.
- 8:14SPEAKER_03: The cameras are already stopped rolling, and we might snap it.
- 8:17SPEAKER_03: Oh my god, hold that up for a second, and we'll snap a still of it or something like that.
- 8:19SPEAKER_03: But you're right, we should probably, you know, like that walleye right there.
- 8:23SPEAKER_03: Smallest walleye ever put on camera.
- 8:25SPEAKER_03: Clearly.
- 8:26SPEAKER_03: You did shoot that one, but right.
- 8:27SPEAKER_06: You shot it.
- 8:29SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 8:29SPEAKER_03: That's when we had good cameramen.
- 8:32SPEAKER_03: Our cameraman lately has been pretty lazy.
- 8:34SPEAKER_03: Slacking on, yeah, he's kinda you gotta give him a little bit.
- 8:36SPEAKER_05: I don't know.
- 8:37SPEAKER_05: I thought, you know, and and then we're gonna talk about Wabagoon here in a minute, because I'm I thought No, on the Wabagoon shoot.
- 8:44SPEAKER_02: I thought that was our in my opinion, but we rehired, we had a new guy on that shoot.
- 8:51SPEAKER_02: Okay, that that guy was uh on fire.
- 8:53SPEAKER_02: He was a free freelancer.
- 8:55SPEAKER_07: All right, whoever filmed uh Red Pine though should be fired.
- 8:59SPEAKER_07: Well, we can talk about that if you like, I don't mind.
- 9:03SPEAKER_07: I want to talk about something though I heard G Fear mentioned.
- 9:06SPEAKER_07: Oh, which was NTN uh the exclusive or bonus content thing.
- 9:12SPEAKER_07: Because we uh we talked about that earlier.
- 9:15SPEAKER_07: Do you want to do you want to take over?
- 9:16SPEAKER_07: Do you want to need an exclusive or do you want me to go?
- 9:19SPEAKER_05: By the time this airs, we're gonna be late in this season.
- 9:23SPEAKER_05: And um by that time, I believe could be wrong.
- 9:29SPEAKER_05: I don't mind throwing it out there knowing full well that it could come splashing back in my face.
- 9:35SPEAKER_05: But by the time we air this, we're gonna be very close to unveiling um a new product on our YouTube channel.
- 9:45SPEAKER_05: And some of the stuff that Greg Fear just asked for will be available, but it will be behind a wall.
- 9:57SPEAKER_05: And don't ask me why, there's all kinds of reasons, so I'm not gonna get into that right now.
- 10:02SPEAKER_05: But starting certainly at the end of this year, starting in the new year, we will have a members-only uh section of the um Fishing Canada family that will have all kinds of bonus stuff that uh only members can see.
- 10:22SPEAKER_05: And and there's a million reasons for that part of it, not the least of which is that we have been um we are so blessed with some incredibly loyal and strong followers and people like yourselves that watch and listen uh on a regular basis, that we thought it was high time we started uh rewarding them for their loyalty.
- 10:49SPEAKER_05: So the only thing I can tell you is that we can't do that unless we make it behind a wall.
- 10:57SPEAKER_05: And we're going to do that, and you're gonna get your just rewards for being a loyal Fish in Canada follower all these years.
- 11:05SPEAKER_05: Uh and it's gonna be some great stuff, not not the least of which you just mentioned, Nick, that uh we'll probably put some of the bloopers and out take.
- 11:13SPEAKER_05: But there's gonna be but there's gonna be a lot of other great content there.
- 11:17SPEAKER_05: For example, um the Fish in Canada show, which airs uh the every year it premieres uh the series premier in January on television and up until recently it premiered on YouTube as well at the same time.
- 11:36SPEAKER_05: We're changing that.
- 11:38SPEAKER_05: That will be moved to the um uh members only section for a bunch of different reasons, not the least of which is that by uh March of next year we will have a YouTube version of the Fish in Canada show, which is not the television show.
- 11:56SPEAKER_05: So there's a lot of stuff going on here.
- 11:59SPEAKER_03: Let me just uh add to that.
- 12:00SPEAKER_03: When you see a Fish in Canada show, it's a polished version of the best of the best in the fish, et cetera, et cetera.
- 12:07SPEAKER_03: But we so many shows have to throw away fish, we have to throw away tips, we have to throw away pieces that we would love to see in the show, but we gotta say, uh yeah, no, it's gotta go.
- 12:17SPEAKER_03: It's gotta go because we've got to be in a certain time frame.
- 12:20SPEAKER_03: On YouTube, we can let her howl Thurston.
- 12:22SPEAKER_00: Well, even today we were talking about something kind of interesting.
- 12:24SPEAKER_00: It's like, okay, do we leave a lodge restoration in the show, or do we put a loon eating a bunch of fish on live scope on the show?
- 12:34SPEAKER_00: Exactly.
- 12:34SPEAKER_00: You literally have to pick between those two things, which is so we we would love to be able to not have to do that.
- 12:41SPEAKER_05: So to for for those of you who may not know the details, but a television program, a half-hour show is actually 22 minutes in in length.
- 12:50SPEAKER_05: Now, strip away from those 22 minutes intros and billboards and bumpers and all the rest of the stuff, and really you're down to 17 and a half.
- 12:59SPEAKER_05: What would Jim Cunda call it?
- 13:00SPEAKER_06: There's a bunch of motion.
- 13:02SPEAKER_06: Thank you.
- 13:02SPEAKER_05: Thank you, Jimmy.
- 13:04SPEAKER_05: Um, and you really have about 17, 17 and a half minutes of content.
- 13:09SPEAKER_05: Well, we shoot three days at a minimum.
- 13:14SPEAKER_05: At a minimum to get that content.
- 13:17SPEAKER_05: And you can imagine uh I mean it and we work long days too, by the way.
- 13:24SPEAKER_05: So, you know, you put it you've got about 10 hours worth of work each day, so 30 hours to whittle it all down to 17 minutes that you get a chance to see on the show every Saturday morning.
- 13:40SPEAKER_05: And that's great because we've been doing it for years and it's what worked out wonderfully, and that's why we are together, that's why you're there and we're here because of that exercise that we've been going through.
- 13:50SPEAKER_05: But we just want to break loose, we want to just change it up.
- 13:55SPEAKER_05: We have so much more to give, and the only way we can do it is by um doing this YouTube uh program that will be unveiled in the new year.
- 14:06SPEAKER_05: So there's a whole bunch of changes coming up for regular Fishing Canada television viewers.
- 14:12SPEAKER_05: Nothing changes, everything will stay the same.
- 14:15SPEAKER_05: But uh, if you are a YouTube follower only, uh you will see all kinds of interesting new stuff.
- 14:24SPEAKER_05: And for you TV guys, come on over if you're watching this for the first time.
- 14:29SPEAKER_05: Uh come on over and join the party um in the members only section once we light it up, as they say.
- 14:35SPEAKER_07: And I I heard from a birdie we may have some more personal connection with uh our our members too, like QA style, maybe some live stream stuff.
- 14:44SPEAKER_05: So there's gonna be some live stream stuff for sure for sure, for sure.
- 14:49SPEAKER_05: Uh, but all kinds of other things.
- 14:51SPEAKER_05: Uh we'll probably have an episode of this show just on that before we light it up and go live.
- 15:00SPEAKER_05: There's that much stuff to talk about.
- 15:02SPEAKER_05: One thing I want to talk about real quick that has something to do with what we're saying here.
- 15:07SPEAKER_05: Uh, first of all, you'll be able to see all of the Fish in Canada episodes in that members only section.
- 15:14SPEAKER_05: You will be able to see right from day one all episodes will be available there.
- 15:21SPEAKER_05: But I was looking at some stuff today.
- 15:23SPEAKER_03: I saw you looking at some stuff.
- 15:25SPEAKER_03: You called me in for some of that stuff.
- 15:26SPEAKER_05: But then after you left, I watched uh some stuff.
- 15:29SPEAKER_05: Uh uh boy, oh boy, have we ever come a long way?
- 15:33SPEAKER_05: Or I guess you could look at it and say things have changed.
- 15:38SPEAKER_05: Things have changed.
- 15:39SPEAKER_05: So so I just watched a segment of yours, pike fishing, in the pouring rain.
- 15:48SPEAKER_05: Never once, no rain jacket, no rain pants.
- 15:52SPEAKER_05: I used to be tough back then.
- 15:54SPEAKER_05: No rain jacket, no rain pants, never once acknowledging that it's even raining.
- 16:00SPEAKER_06: I swear to god, you gotta see this.
- 16:02SPEAKER_06: I laughed my head off.
- 16:04SPEAKER_05: I mean, it's not just like a little truck, it's a downpour, and you're trying to.
- 16:09SPEAKER_05: I'm like, I'm thinking, what?
- 16:10SPEAKER_05: Does he hope the audience doesn't see that it's dripping off his head?
- 16:14SPEAKER_05: Well, we must have let it go in air.
- 16:16SPEAKER_05: You must have approved it.
- 16:17SPEAKER_02: You probably edited.
- 16:18SPEAKER_02: I know.
- 16:18SPEAKER_02: I'm just saying, back then we did that, right?
- 16:20SPEAKER_03: That's crazy.
- 16:21SPEAKER_02: But but where was that?
- 16:22SPEAKER_02: What did I have a fish on?
- 16:23SPEAKER_02: Was there a reason to have me on there?
- 16:25SPEAKER_03: Like, why was I even on there?
- 16:27SPEAKER_05: I don't know where it was.
- 16:30SPEAKER_05: Because I I didn't watch it uh to the end.
- 16:33SPEAKER_05: And there's back then we used to have like four segments on the show.
- 16:35SPEAKER_05: Yeah, yeah.
- 16:36SPEAKER_05: You you were just one of the four segments, and and when we cut to you for your segment, you say, Yeah, everything's cool.
- 16:45SPEAKER_05: Yeah, I'm gonna never saying, boy, holy mackerel, I don't know how I'm gonna get this done with all this rain.
- 16:50SPEAKER_05: No, so hey, yeah, I'm here today, I'm I'm gonna do this, and I and you get right into it.
- 16:55SPEAKER_05: And it's just pouring all around you when you go down to get the tight shot of the fish.
- 16:59SPEAKER_05: You can't see the fish because the water splashes from the rain are so big and they cover the whole scene.
- 17:05SPEAKER_02: That's hilarious.
- 17:06SPEAKER_05: There was another one that one, man.
- 17:08SPEAKER_07: I loved it.
- 17:09SPEAKER_07: There was another good one you showed me earlier with Pete sprawled out on the captain's boat, Hollywood, big sunglasses, mullet flowing.
- 17:18SPEAKER_07: Captain of the I could like the driver's seat, I tell you.
- 17:22SPEAKER_07: And just sprawled out with big chain on.
- 17:25SPEAKER_07: It was it was quite something.
- 17:26SPEAKER_07: It was quite boy!
- 17:31SPEAKER_05: You are gonna have so much fun when you see these episodes.
- 17:34SPEAKER_05: Oh god.
- 17:34SPEAKER_05: I know I did.
- 17:35SPEAKER_05: So right on um, but the fact that you didn't have ring gear on.
- 17:39SPEAKER_05: I can't believe that.
- 17:40SPEAKER_05: That's craziness.
- 17:42SPEAKER_05: Nothing.
- 17:43SPEAKER_05: In your jeans, and this uh this wind, not even a windbreaker, is I don't even know what it was.
- 17:48SPEAKER_03: Maybe one of our fish to Canada coats or something.
- 17:51SPEAKER_05: No, that would that would that would be a coat.
- 17:53SPEAKER_05: This was just a skin, a shell, like a nylon little shell.
- 17:56SPEAKER_05: And you can see like you were just soaked through it.
- 17:59SPEAKER_02: Oh my god, that's hilarious.
- 18:01SPEAKER_02: But, anyways, yeah.
- 18:02SPEAKER_02: Um if it's entertaining us, it's gonna entertain you for sure.
- 18:06SPEAKER_05: You will die laughing.
- 18:07SPEAKER_05: You will absolutely die laughing.
- 18:09SPEAKER_05: We were very hard, ambitious uh young men back then.
- 18:14SPEAKER_05: We we worked very hard.
- 18:16SPEAKER_05: Very hard.
- 18:16SPEAKER_05: Well, that too.
- 18:18SPEAKER_05: Look at right there.
- 18:20SPEAKER_05: Um we we uh we were we were uh a different bunch for sure.
- 18:28SPEAKER_05: For sure.
- 18:29SPEAKER_05: But anyways.
- 18:31SPEAKER_03: Um so go let's go back back to G-Fear just a yes, you know.
- 18:36SPEAKER_03: Obviously, G-Fear.
- 18:38SPEAKER_03: You're opening our eyes up to stuff like that.
- 18:41SPEAKER_03: Maybe we'll be more conscious of shooting, just keep the cameras rolling and stuff like that.
- 18:46SPEAKER_03: Because we we used to, then we basically stopped, but we need to keep the camera.
- 18:50SPEAKER_03: I always say that we need to keep the cameras rolling.
- 18:52SPEAKER_03: There was last last year, there were so many incidences where the cameraman, not mentioning any names or anything, but the cameraman just says, Okay, that fish is released, up, that's off.
- 19:01SPEAKER_03: You don't even get a chance to say, okay, I caught that thing on this pen, and it was the color of that cup, and it didn't have time to say shit.
- 19:07SPEAKER_03: So we gotta keep it.
- 19:08SPEAKER_03: You gotta remind us.
- 19:10SPEAKER_03: Thank you.
- 19:10SPEAKER_03: Geef.
- 19:11SPEAKER_05: I think the best shows that we could ever produce, it won't happen, it will not happen, would be shows where cameras are running the entire time.
- 19:21SPEAKER_03: Yeah, that'd be the best.
- 19:22SPEAKER_05: And then make it the problem with that, but but see now to me, that's why piece of cake.
- 19:27SPEAKER_05: We got batteries, we got we got we got uh uh uh cards to to you know record uh stuff.
- 19:34SPEAKER_05: The problem is when it goes into post-production and you gotta wade through 180 hours to you know you gotta log it all.
- 19:44SPEAKER_05: Somebody has to go through that entire three days or four days and log everything into the system.
- 19:51SPEAKER_05: That could take weeks, if not months.
- 19:53SPEAKER_03: Oh, it takes it takes an immense amount of time just to log what we have, the cut footage, it's unreal.
- 20:00SPEAKER_03: So that, yeah, you it's pretty near impossible.
- 20:03SPEAKER_03: Because very quickly, when you're logging footage, you can do it the fast way and that's scrub through it really quick, but there might be five things that are said in there audio-wise that people don't even realize, you know, that you don't realize even, you know what I mean.
- 20:16SPEAKER_03: The camera was pointing out here, but Dan said something about that loon diving over there.
- 20:19SPEAKER_03: You don't you have to kind of listen to everything, too.
- 20:22SPEAKER_03: You have to really basically go through every bit of footage, every second of footage, and that's time consuming.
- 20:26SPEAKER_03: It's not hard work, it's time consuming.
- 20:29SPEAKER_05: A good example of that.
- 20:31SPEAKER_05: We talked, Dean, you alluded to it a few minutes ago, uh, about the loon um that we caught on uh live scope breaking into this bait ball.
- 20:43SPEAKER_05: It was just an incredible scene.
- 20:44SPEAKER_05: You know what the problem with it is is that we recorded that without thinking that somebody should mark that spot.
- 20:54SPEAKER_05: It was just straight recording.
- 20:55SPEAKER_05: It was like three or four hours of straight recording of the screen on that particular uh shoot that we are now gonna have to go through.
- 21:04SPEAKER_02: No, no, I think I found it.
- 21:05SPEAKER_02: Oh, you found it?
- 21:06SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I think I think so.
- 21:07SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I think so.
- 21:08SPEAKER_03: But it's not as good as you think.
- 21:09SPEAKER_03: So it's it's not, eh?
- 21:11SPEAKER_03: No, it's not quite as good as you think.
- 21:13SPEAKER_03: I remember looking at the screen and I saw this.
- 21:16SPEAKER_03: But it's for TV, you need to be you need to follow that loon and this while the loon gets out of the scope pole and back in.
- 21:23SPEAKER_03: It's quick, it's really fast.
- 21:25SPEAKER_03: Is it stuff?
- 21:25SPEAKER_03: Yeah, but we'll I'll show you.
- 21:26SPEAKER_05: It's wow.
- 21:27SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 21:28SPEAKER_03: If if that's even it, I guess that's it.
- 21:29SPEAKER_05: I think it was so the the scene I have in my mind that I saw, it came it came down and under the the bait ball and then shot up into it.
- 21:41SPEAKER_05: Like you could see it coming down.
- 21:42SPEAKER_05: It was a long well, it looked like a bird.
- 21:45SPEAKER_05: It looked like a loon.
- 21:46SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 21:47SPEAKER_05: And it came down and under and up through, and then all hell broke loose.
- 21:52SPEAKER_03: It was very close to that.
- 21:53SPEAKER_03: What I found anyway.
- 21:54SPEAKER_03: So hopefully I'm wrong in work, but I don't think anyway.
- 21:58SPEAKER_02: Well, it was quick.
- 22:00SPEAKER_02: Very quick.
- 22:00SPEAKER_02: Very quick.
- 22:01SPEAKER_05: But anyways.
- 22:02SPEAKER_05: We'll do the best we can with what Marscall gave us too.
- 22:08SPEAKER_05: Stay tuned because there's some exciting stuff coming up with the Fish in Canada brand.
- 22:14SPEAKER_05: And um it all starts this uh fall, early of uh 2027.
- 22:19SPEAKER_05: We'll be into a whole new space.
- 22:22SPEAKER_07: You can think of it like our New Year's resolution to be better.
- 22:26unknown: Wow.
- 22:27SPEAKER_07: Well, I don't know about being better.
- 22:29SPEAKER_07: I'd say it's better.
- 22:30SPEAKER_07: We're better fan service, better community engagement.
- 22:33SPEAKER_07: We're not gonna have necessarily better content, but we're gonna have more content, and more is good.
- 22:38SPEAKER_07: All right.
- 22:38SPEAKER_07: I'd say it's our commitment, our commitment to our fans for the new year.
- 22:42SPEAKER_03: Trying to be better, maybe.
- 22:43SPEAKER_05: Well said.
- 22:44SPEAKER_05: Commitment to the fans for the new year.
- 22:47SPEAKER_05: All right.
- 22:48SPEAKER_05: Did uh Greg Fear get enough of his.
- 22:50SPEAKER_01: Oh, he did good there, didn't he?
- 22:52SPEAKER_01: He did real good.
- 22:53SPEAKER_05: Uh hopefully we won't have to talk about this guy in the new year.
- 22:56SPEAKER_05: I'm I'm Oh, you think they're gonna be gone?
- 22:59SPEAKER_05: Well, I think that that yeah, I'm thinking we'll have some solutions to this, and I think there'll be other things in place, but we're talking about the grass carp.
- 23:09SPEAKER_05: Grass carp.
- 23:10SPEAKER_05: This critter right here.
- 23:12SPEAKER_05: Um conservation corner brought to you by the good folks at invasivecarp.ca or invasive species center.
- 23:20SPEAKER_05: Um what have we got?
- 23:22SPEAKER_05: Anything new?
- 23:23SPEAKER_00: Anything exciting uh about not really the big I mean we've talked about it a few times and we're gonna have a full in-depth podcast on it, but um the carp that was captured in the Welland, um fertile fish, which is kind of what everyone's been dreading to hear.
- 23:42SPEAKER_00: Um we have we'll have lots of info information more detailed about that soon.
- 23:47SPEAKER_00: But essentially, from what I've been seeing, and this is mostly just anecdotally kind of looking online to the the response on Facebook and stuff like that on the DFL post about the capture, is that a lot of people are coming across these fish and not reporting it because they think they're common carup, they think they're you know, oh, it must be some sort of sucker or something like that because it's got a weird mouth, and um a lot of people are seeing these fish, and it it does seem that um a lot of anglers who were fishing that area had been seeing them for quite some time before one was actually captured because it was captured during um like a DFO initiative.
- 24:23SPEAKER_00: Um, so maybe this could have been prevented earlier.
- 24:26SPEAKER_03: Um people how do we get the word to uh to our non-listeners or non-viewers?
- 24:32SPEAKER_03: That's the problem, right?
- 24:33SPEAKER_03: Because I think our viewers and listeners are enough, they know that they go, hey, I'm gonna take a picture of this thing.
- 24:37SPEAKER_03: This is something weird, but we have to get that word spread further.
- 24:40SPEAKER_07: So you know what?
- 24:41SPEAKER_07: Maybe we should uh we should run a little incentive program for our listeners if they can uh you know spread the word out and prove that they spread the word out, some sort of reward.
- 24:54SPEAKER_00: I don't know.
- 24:55SPEAKER_00: We had someone write in that we make a t-shirt with uh a big grass carp on it.
- 25:00SPEAKER_00: T-shirt?
- 25:01SPEAKER_00: Big grass carp on it.
- 25:02SPEAKER_00: But again, the line thrower.
- 25:04SPEAKER_03: The non yeah, but the the non-listeners, the non-fans, would they buy that t-shirt?
- 25:08SPEAKER_03: Would they see that t-shirt?
- 25:09SPEAKER_07: Buy it for someone else.
- 25:10SPEAKER_07: Christmas is coming.
- 25:11SPEAKER_03: Yeah, you know what?
- 25:13SPEAKER_07: Yeah, I'm just saying grass carp species hoodie.
- 25:15SPEAKER_07: The grass carp species hoodie.
- 25:17SPEAKER_07: Uh make it totally different than the rest of them, right?
- 25:19SPEAKER_03: The ugliest hoodie you can possibly buy.
- 25:22SPEAKER_03: Make it look like, okay, this thing is not of this earth.
- 25:24SPEAKER_03: It needs to go, it needs to leave.
- 25:26SPEAKER_03: So there you go.
- 25:26SPEAKER_03: I've got some ideas already.
- 25:28SPEAKER_07: We'll put a little spaceship over top of all the other species fish looking down in fear or looking up in fear with this little ship with the grass carp.
- 25:37SPEAKER_05: In the meantime, in the meantime, I'd recommend everybody goes to invasivecarp.ca and uh arm yourself with all of the info that's available there.
- 25:48SPEAKER_05: Um and carry it with you, man.
- 25:50SPEAKER_05: Put it on your phone so you can ID this thing and also so that you know numbers, contact information of what you should do if you do run into a grass carp in the wild.
- 26:01SPEAKER_05: I don't know whether that's gonna happen during the fall period very much, but certainly in the spring.
- 26:07SPEAKER_03: Very yeah, I I've often wondered about that because I rarely see like if spring and summer, you see common carp all the time, right?
- 26:15SPEAKER_03: You and I, and Dean and Nick, too.
- 26:18SPEAKER_03: Come fall and then in early winter, where are they?
- 26:21SPEAKER_03: Where do they go?
- 26:22SPEAKER_03: You know what I mean?
- 26:22SPEAKER_03: You don't see them.
- 26:23SPEAKER_05: They're not in the shallows, right?
- 26:24SPEAKER_05: It's like it's like a crappie.
- 26:26SPEAKER_05: It's like a lot of other species.
- 26:28SPEAKER_03: Even like on those 10 foot, 12 foot weed lines, you would think, you know, maybe there'd be something hanging around there.
- 26:33SPEAKER_03: You don't rarely see it like that.
- 26:35SPEAKER_03: And maybe I I might not be reading it right either on my live scope, but but you're you're always looking and you're seeing everything moving down there, and it just doesn't look as big as a carp.
- 26:43SPEAKER_03: So maybe they're out suspended in the middle of the lake or something.
- 26:46SPEAKER_03: I don't know.
- 26:46SPEAKER_03: Sometimes you don't see what you don't see.
- 26:49SPEAKER_02: Maybe they're buried in the mud.
- 26:51SPEAKER_02: They're muddy totally, totally unrelated to this.
- 26:53SPEAKER_05: I just watched an episode that I did, I don't know, it must have been in the early 80s, maybe early 90s, I don't know.
- 26:59SPEAKER_05: Uh, shot totally in the dark.
- 27:04SPEAKER_05: How do you know it was you?
- 27:05SPEAKER_05: Well, because I could tell because my name on my shirt was illuminated.
- 27:09SPEAKER_05: It's glowing in a lit shirt, a little LED shirt there.
- 27:13SPEAKER_05: In the dark.
- 27:14SPEAKER_05: Wow.
- 27:14SPEAKER_05: And you know what?
- 27:16SPEAKER_05: It works.
- 27:16SPEAKER_05: You know how we've always said, nah, you can't shoot stuff under low light, and you can't, there's no features, and you can't see that.
- 27:23SPEAKER_05: It was not bad at all.
- 27:25SPEAKER_05: Did you have lights on the boat?
- 27:27SPEAKER_05: We had this massive, uh, if I recall, Pete, correct me if I'm wrong.
- 27:31SPEAKER_05: We had this massive spotlight, like an incandescent spotlight on another boat where the cameraman was.
- 27:39SPEAKER_05: Powered by a generator or something?
- 27:40SPEAKER_05: I don't know.
- 27:41SPEAKER_03: No, we had the one I remember was about that big around.
- 27:46SPEAKER_03: Yes, and it was a trigger light, right?
- 27:48SPEAKER_03: Trigger light, yeah, exactly.
- 27:49SPEAKER_03: We had two of them, and they plugged in 12 volt.
- 27:51SPEAKER_03: They had a curly cord on it.
- 27:52SPEAKER_03: Yes, and they plugged into the boats.
- 27:54SPEAKER_03: So that's what I remember any of them.
- 27:56SPEAKER_03: Yeah, and they were big, and they were yeah, that big around.
- 27:59SPEAKER_03: And they shot a beam of light like crazy there like that.
- 28:01SPEAKER_05: But it looks fantastic, really.
- 28:04SPEAKER_05: Yeah, like everything is dark outside of the person.
- 28:08SPEAKER_05: So everything you can't you cannot see anything, which is fine.
- 28:11SPEAKER_05: Other than they're shooting a night show.
- 28:13SPEAKER_05: Exactly.
- 28:14SPEAKER_05: It that'd be cool to do.
- 28:16SPEAKER_03: It opened my eyes.
- 28:17SPEAKER_03: Now we could go to all our secret areas and nobody'd ever know where they were.
- 28:21SPEAKER_03: There you go.
- 28:21SPEAKER_03: Now we could finally shoot these areas that were hiding.
- 28:23SPEAKER_05: And then we'll give them the GPS coordinates on our hotspots.
- 28:26SPEAKER_05: See if they can see if they can put it together.
- 28:30SPEAKER_03: You guys were lying.
- 28:32SPEAKER_05: That's uh that's another thing that's going to be moved to the members only, just so that you know, uh, will be all these hotspots that we keep.
- 28:40SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 28:40SPEAKER_00: Well, I can explain that really quick just so people think we're not just hiding everything, just because.
- 28:45SPEAKER_00: So if anyone's been on the internet lately, you've obviously seen AI kind of take over all the search engines and everything.
- 28:51SPEAKER_00: So our website essentially gets stripped of all its material and outsourced to AI for free.
- 28:58SPEAKER_00: Um, and that's taking place with all of our hotspots, with all of our articles.
- 29:02SPEAKER_00: So uh we want to keep our personal touch on everything, but also you know, keep the work that it you know, it takes a lot of effort to go out and do all this stuff.
- 29:12SPEAKER_00: Um, and then for it to just be pumped out and watered down for free, it doesn't seem like uh we just don't want to spend a lot of time doing that.
- 29:21SPEAKER_03: That way we can put new hotspots in there too.
- 29:23SPEAKER_03: We can just keep uh replenishing that and not worrying about AI ripping us off.
- 29:27SPEAKER_00: Yeah, like and it more personalized if people want to know if we get a lot of feedback from members that they want to know certain things, we can help out.
- 29:34SPEAKER_05: Yeah, now now I'm listening to you, Dean, and I'm putting myself in their shoes or on their couch or in their car, wherever they're viewing or listening from here.
- 29:45SPEAKER_05: And I'm thinking, I'm thinking, well, that's a bunch of bullshit.
- 29:50SPEAKER_05: It's a bunch of bullshit.
- 29:51SPEAKER_05: That's right.
- 29:52SPEAKER_05: Because you are helping me, me being them, right?
- 29:57SPEAKER_05: Because yeah, okay, so AI, when I when I go to my computer and I punch in, uh, you know, where should I go uh carp fishing?
- 30:06SPEAKER_05: Speaking of carp uh this spring.
- 30:08SPEAKER_05: And yeah, they will go to to our site, to fish in Canada site, and extrapolate what information they need from that, and then they'll give me the you know, say best place to go carp fishing will be da-da-da.
- 30:20SPEAKER_05: So the consumer sitting there listening right now is probably saying, So what's wrong with that?
- 30:26SPEAKER_00: Yeah, well, the basically the alternative is for us to stop doing it because one, it's it's accessible, it's just we get nothing back for anything.
- 30:34SPEAKER_00: So there needs to be a bit of give and take.
- 30:36SPEAKER_00: Right now, AI companies take all the money and we do all the work.
- 30:40SPEAKER_00: So it's all about money.
- 30:41SPEAKER_00: Uh I mean uh it's all about money.
- 30:43SPEAKER_00: It's like anyone's job, you want to get paid for what you do.
- 30:45SPEAKER_03: So we'll gotta keep the doors open, bud.
- 30:47SPEAKER_07: And we don't want to support keep the families fed, support the clankers.
- 30:51SPEAKER_07: Yeah.
- 30:52SPEAKER_05: My my biggest no clankers.
- 30:55SPEAKER_05: F the clankers.
- 30:56SPEAKER_05: My biggest uh problem with it is that we have no control, we don't know what it's being used for, we don't know where it's going, how it's being uh you know, distributed.
- 31:06SPEAKER_05: We just have lost total control over our own product.
- 31:09SPEAKER_05: It was great something like this podcast.
- 31:12SPEAKER_05: No, come on, we're all over the place.
- 31:14SPEAKER_03: I love it.
- 31:15SPEAKER_03: These are my favorite.
- 31:16SPEAKER_05: No, but but you know, the early days of fishingcanada.com, it was great.
- 31:22SPEAKER_05: We could see the people coming in and and consuming all of this content and all of this information, and we love doing it, and we we felt like we were in daily contact with all of you.
- 31:34SPEAKER_05: Well, that's all gone because now you just go to the go to your browser and and ask a question, and AI comes in and rapes and pillages all of us in the business in the industry and gives you you're still getting what you want.
- 31:48SPEAKER_05: Probably in a more concise fashion, but we've lost touch with you.
- 31:55SPEAKER_05: We don't have that touch with you anymore.
- 31:57SPEAKER_03: So when they when you're let's get uh one question in here.
- 32:01SPEAKER_05: So when if somebody's looking for a hot spot on so-and-so lake and they and AI just happens to pull our information, well, do we even it's more than that, it's not just happens because we have been putting hot spots uh on the internet for a better part of what 20 years now?
- 32:16SPEAKER_05: Hello.
- 32:17SPEAKER_05: There's a lovely countess coming through, gracing us with her presence like she does each and every episode.
- 32:21SPEAKER_05: One day we're gonna have to get her on the program.
- 32:24SPEAKER_02: I'd love to get her on the program.
- 32:25SPEAKER_02: Oh my god.
- 32:26SPEAKER_02: Who wants I want everybody there listening and behind the wall, the exclusive Monique Tange on the phone.
- 32:33SPEAKER_02: Oh my god.
- 32:35SPEAKER_03: Sell the shit out of that, uh huh.
- 32:37SPEAKER_03: Anyways.
- 32:40SPEAKER_03: Um what was I saying?
- 32:42SPEAKER_03: Uh I was asking about when I said AI's ripping us up.
- 32:45SPEAKER_03: What I was gonna say, you interrupted me because I was just gonna say, do we even get a credit of any type for that?
- 32:48SPEAKER_03: Because a lot of times they give you a little link there, too.
- 32:50SPEAKER_03: Yeah, not it depends.
- 32:52SPEAKER_00: Uh I think Andrew's just kind of getting to we've done it so long, and it's at first maybe it'll give you credit, but basically what it does is a summary.
- 33:01SPEAKER_00: So it's compiling everything, it might spit out 12 different sources, yeah, and you'd have to go and dig through them to find where the coordinates came from or where the advice came from.
- 33:10SPEAKER_01: Wow, right.
- 33:11SPEAKER_00: Um, but there's no all the personalities taken from it.
- 33:14SPEAKER_00: Like if it was Ange fishing like Simcoe and he was talking about a perch pattern, it's just rewritten in the sends you the hair.
- 33:23SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 33:24SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 33:24SPEAKER_05: I mean that's that's to me.
- 33:26SPEAKER_05: I mean, yes, obviously from a financial standpoint, it doesn't make sense because we're doing all the work, the heavy lifting, and and in comes AI.
- 33:36SPEAKER_05: And and by the way, I have nothing against AI.
- 33:39SPEAKER_05: We use it ourselves.
- 33:40SPEAKER_05: I mean, every day that we're we're working, I'm sure we we have some interaction with AI.
- 33:46SPEAKER_05: I just I don't know.
- 33:47SPEAKER_05: In this particular case, we we we we don't have that same connection with the users, the user group.
- 33:55SPEAKER_05: So we're thinking once we uh put that behind a wall and it's members only, first of all, from what I understand, that will preclude anybody getting to it.
- 34:08SPEAKER_00: Yeah, unless a member shares it on a forum or something, it's it's behind our wall.
- 34:14SPEAKER_00: So don't do that, please.
- 34:15SPEAKER_00: Oh, I was gonna say, wow.
- 34:16SPEAKER_00: Yeah, but please don't do that.
- 34:18SPEAKER_05: We'll have to make that part of the deal or something.
- 34:19SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 34:20SPEAKER_05: You know, nothing leaves the room.
- 34:22SPEAKER_00: Yes, exactly.
- 34:23SPEAKER_05: Uh, but anyways, we'll we'll we'll keep uh every week we'll we'll give you more as the details come in and we find out more and more.
- 34:31SPEAKER_05: We will let you know.
- 34:32SPEAKER_05: But I'm looking forward to it because it'll allow us after four decades of doing this, it'll allow us to spread our wings a little bit.
- 34:41SPEAKER_05: And spread your wings and fly.
- 34:43SPEAKER_05: That's right.
- 34:45SPEAKER_05: And I'm looking forward to that.
- 34:47SPEAKER_05: Just uh a bit of a different space to be in than we not that there's anything wrong with this one, but uh I'm looking forward to the the intimacy, if you will, with the fans.
- 34:57SPEAKER_07: The the being able to to I didn't know you were an intimate guy.
- 35:00SPEAKER_07: I'm an intimate fella, I'm feeling romantical, but that's beyond the point.
- 35:04SPEAKER_05: We'll dress you up in your house uh coat, uh robe or something.
- 35:08SPEAKER_05: Yeah, but I like that.
- 35:09SPEAKER_05: And there's the lovely Joseph Gorskowski.
- 35:12SPEAKER_05: Everybody's coming through to the whole gang's here.
- 35:16SPEAKER_05: We should open this.
- 35:17SPEAKER_05: You know what we should do?
- 35:18SPEAKER_05: We should open this up to the public.
- 35:20SPEAKER_00: We should open these tapings up to the public.
- 35:22SPEAKER_00: Well, the audience is here.
- 35:23SPEAKER_00: It's film in front of a live studio.
- 35:25SPEAKER_01: Yeah, thank you.
- 35:29SPEAKER_02: You were so quiet, I forgot about you.
- 35:32SPEAKER_02: I think they went for a coffee there with uh with Hengy and uh Joseph.
- 35:36SPEAKER_07: Well, sometimes you know they gotta they gotta take a break.
- 35:38SPEAKER_05: Enough of this nonsense.
- 35:40SPEAKER_05: Uh moving on in the news brought to you by JB, your outdoor superstore, JB Cycle and Marine.
- 35:47SPEAKER_05: They dropped the big uh or on the the the did they drop it?
- 35:53SPEAKER_05: Yes.
- 35:53SPEAKER_05: We we got communication that they are gonna go ahead with their uh what do they call that, Dean, where they you buy a boat online?
- 36:02SPEAKER_05: Direct to you.
- 36:02SPEAKER_05: Direct to you.
- 36:04SPEAKER_00: We are gonna do a full interview with Rob to get the breakdown and everything on what is actually happening here.
- 36:09SPEAKER_02: Give me the give me the Cole's notes.
- 36:11SPEAKER_05: Direct to you.
- 36:12SPEAKER_05: They will have uh a whole library of used and new boats, motors, trailers, packages, etc.
- 36:21SPEAKER_05: Nice.
- 36:22SPEAKER_05: And doesn't matter where you are, you delivered.
- 36:26SPEAKER_05: You you buy it, you buy it, they'll deliver it.
- 36:30SPEAKER_05: And in Rob's words, because I said, Rob, how are you?
- 36:32SPEAKER_05: How in the hell are you gonna don't worry about it?
- 36:35SPEAKER_05: We'll figure that out when the time comes.
- 36:38SPEAKER_02: I love it.
- 36:39SPEAKER_02: That guy's awesome.
- 36:40SPEAKER_02: He's the best.
- 36:42SPEAKER_05: I love him to death, man.
- 36:43SPEAKER_02: Oh god.
- 36:44SPEAKER_05: Um, anyways, that's uh that's coming up direct to you.
- 36:48SPEAKER_05: You buy it, we'll deliver it.
- 36:50SPEAKER_05: Don't you worry about it.
- 36:51SPEAKER_03: I wonder let's do this podcast before Rob delivers the first boat because I want to hear all the shit that's gonna go out out of him.
- 36:58SPEAKER_02: That'll be great.
- 37:00SPEAKER_02: God help us.
- 37:01SPEAKER_05: Uh I love it.
- 37:03SPEAKER_05: That's awesome.
- 37:03SPEAKER_05: That's great.
- 37:04SPEAKER_05: That's great for the consumer.
- 37:06SPEAKER_05: Yeah, for sure.
- 37:07SPEAKER_05: For sure.
- 37:08SPEAKER_05: And it, you know, we let's face it, a couple of years ago when he came to us and said he was gonna start leasing boat and motor packages to cottagers, where they just, you know, instead of making that commitment to buy a boat, motor, trailer, package, and then living with whatever their decision was, good, bad, or indifferent, or maybe outgrowing it within a few months and what wishing they had something different.
- 37:31SPEAKER_05: Well, his idea was you know what?
- 37:34SPEAKER_05: I'm going to lease that boat motor trailer package to these good people, and then I'm gonna deliver it in the spring.
- 37:41SPEAKER_05: I'm gonna put it in the water for them.
- 37:43SPEAKER_05: It's gonna be all filled up with fuel, and we're gonna instruct them on how to use it and all that stuff, and then we're gonna wave them a goodbye, enjoy your boat motor trailer package, and then in the fall, when the cottage is done and you're finished with the boat motor trailer, you don't worry about it because we're gonna come and we're gonna pick that baby up, put her on the trailer, and it's out of your hair.
- 38:05SPEAKER_05: Uh, goodbye, ask the living, and start thinking about what your next package is gonna look like.
- 38:11SPEAKER_05: Like, and when he said that to us, we said, Are you crazy?
- 38:15SPEAKER_05: How in the hell are you gonna do that?
- 38:17SPEAKER_05: And he said the same thing.
- 38:18SPEAKER_05: Don't worry about it, we'll get it figured out when the time comes.
- 38:21SPEAKER_05: And you know what?
- 38:22SPEAKER_05: He figured it.
- 38:23SPEAKER_05: I'm happy to tell you, they are jammed in that uh that part of his uh business.
- 38:29SPEAKER_05: They are absolutely their biggest problem right now is how do they get people to deliver and pick up in those particular areas?
- 38:41SPEAKER_05: It's one thing dropping a boat off, like he's gonna do on this you buy it, we'll deliver it kind of thing, but it's another one where you have to have somebody to service it just in case there's a problem, right?
- 38:50SPEAKER_05: You know, or somebody you know says, Hey, I know you showed me how to turn the key, but I can't get the key in there, so somebody's got to go.
- 38:56SPEAKER_05: His problem right now is uh having enough people in the field in that division of the business to take care of uh his customers because he's very service-oriented.
- 39:05SPEAKER_05: The thing about RB Marine, yeah, of course, just JB.
- 39:08SPEAKER_05: JMB, sorry, they we they know who I'm talking about.
- 39:11SPEAKER_05: I know, but don't get picky.
- 39:14SPEAKER_05: I was thinking of R because I think I need a rest.
- 39:16SPEAKER_03: Or RB music, rhythm rhythm and blues.
- 39:20SPEAKER_05: Uh the thing about them is that they're very service-oriented.
- 39:23SPEAKER_05: Yeah, they represent some of the biggest brands in the marine industry and the snowmobile industry and the A TV industry, like all the big brands are there.
- 39:34SPEAKER_05: But that's not the core of their business, is uh based on service.
- 39:39SPEAKER_05: That's what they do.
- 39:40SPEAKER_02: So, anyways, enough enough about that.
- 39:44SPEAKER_02: That was a good little plug for J and B.
- 39:47SPEAKER_05: I'm trying to accumulate so that when we do shit to bed and don't deliver, you actually say, Oh, yeah?
- 39:52SPEAKER_05: Well, go to episode 321, baby, and check out.
- 39:56SPEAKER_02: Let's go.
- 39:58SPEAKER_05: Uh, in the news brought to you JB.
- 40:02SPEAKER_05: Uh working to protect Alberta rainbow trout from an invasive parasite now, no less.
- 40:10SPEAKER_05: An invasive parasite.
- 40:12SPEAKER_03: Is this world like made uh just of invasive, like our we are dealing with it all over the place here with our in our waters, right?
- 40:19SPEAKER_03: And all of a sudden now this is in northern Alberta, do you know?
- 40:22SPEAKER_00: Northern Alberta, yeah.
- 40:23SPEAKER_03: Upper Athabasca.
- 40:24SPEAKER_00: This is one that so it this is about the whirling disease, which is caused.
- 40:29SPEAKER_00: I actually didn't know this was caused by a parasite.
- 40:31SPEAKER_00: Um, this is the one, and if you're watching this, you can kind of see the picture where their tails get all crooked.
- 40:37SPEAKER_00: It normally affects younger trout.
- 40:40SPEAKER_00: Um, I've seen this in videos of hatcheries.
- 40:43SPEAKER_00: Like when you see videos of uh the open pen salmon farms and also hatcheries, like inland hatcheries.
- 40:51SPEAKER_00: Yeah, you see the ones with the crooked tails and stuff.
- 40:53SPEAKER_00: I'm thinking this is the same disease.
- 40:55SPEAKER_00: I'm sure it spreads much faster um in hatcheries.
- 40:58SPEAKER_00: Um, but yeah, they found it in northern Alberta, and they're mostly concerned about the Athabasca ri rainbow trout because it's only found there.
- 41:08SPEAKER_00: I guess it's been um separated enough to classify it as its own species or at least subspecies of of the rainbow.
- 41:16SPEAKER_00: Um but it's uh uh it's 90% um it it kills 90% of the the fish affected by, and you can see why.
- 41:25SPEAKER_00: I mean, they really can't swim.
- 41:27SPEAKER_00: They the the disease name actually comes from because I think when they swim, they kind of spin in circles because their tails are completely either bent up or to the side.
- 41:36SPEAKER_00: Um so it's pretty extreme.
- 41:38SPEAKER_00: There's some good information on the C the CBC did a full report on it that talks about the parasite and what they're doing right now to monitor it, doing water samples and really making sure um that it doesn't spread and affect this fish because it spreads super fast, close quarters during spawning and stuff like that.
- 41:57SPEAKER_00: How would it get into a I was gonna say, of course, they don't know how it got there, but it's even in the hatchery situation.
- 42:03SPEAKER_03: You said it happens a lot in hatcheries.
- 42:04SPEAKER_03: I wonder how the heck it even is.
- 42:05SPEAKER_00: So they they say it travels.
- 42:07SPEAKER_00: So I remember when I lived out there, they were very picky about no felt uh bottoms on your waiting boots.
- 42:15SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah.
- 42:16SPEAKER_00: So it's actually the closest relative to the parasite is the jelly fish.
- 42:21SPEAKER_00: So it's just like a little and it's uh small enough to stick to your boots if you're in the the roof.
- 42:26SPEAKER_00: No kidding.
- 42:27SPEAKER_00: So it must be pretty hardy too to be able, you know, if you were in a a river in northern BC on the coast and then drove to Alberta, you I guess it would stay on your boat long enough or their eggs or something.
- 42:38SPEAKER_00: Um yeah, so they found um who would even who would even expect that?
- 42:43SPEAKER_03: On your waiter boots, on your bottom of your boots you're bringing in, you know what I mean?
- 42:46SPEAKER_03: You just wouldn't expect it.
- 42:47SPEAKER_00: But yeah, so when I made the switch, because you wear them mostly so you don't fall on the rocks and stuff, they're much nicer to walk in.
- 42:53SPEAKER_00: Um but when you take your boots off at the end of the day, I started looking at the bottom of them because I wore the felt ones for a while.
- 42:59SPEAKER_00: And uh there's a lot on there, like a there is a lot that sticks to that.
- 43:02SPEAKER_00: It's basically like a velcro bottom.
- 43:04SPEAKER_00: So it does stick, yeah.
- 43:06SPEAKER_00: Interesting.
- 43:07SPEAKER_00: So if you're in that area, probably abandon those boots.
- 43:09SPEAKER_00: They might be illegal out there now.
- 43:11SPEAKER_03: Yeah, they probably should they probably should ban them if that's the case, right?
- 43:14SPEAKER_05: They were great though.
- 43:15SPEAKER_05: I mean, they really helped on slippery rocks based on the stuff.
- 43:18SPEAKER_03: Nothing worse than the slippery rocks when you're waiting in current.
- 43:21SPEAKER_03: Oh my god.
- 43:22SPEAKER_05: Anyways, interesting story.
- 43:23SPEAKER_05: Uh check it all out on fishingcanada.com.
- 43:27SPEAKER_05: And uh, especially for you folks out in the west coast that might be exposed to this, you might want to get a little more detailed information.
- 43:35SPEAKER_05: It is all there uh waiting for you on fishingcanada.com.
- 43:40SPEAKER_05: And speaking of of uh um you sometimes you you hear this stuff and you say it can't be real.
- 43:45SPEAKER_05: I just ran into one of these invasive species.
- 43:48SPEAKER_05: Oh, it's real.
- 43:49SPEAKER_05: It's damn real.
- 43:50SPEAKER_05: Oh yeah.
- 43:53SPEAKER_05: Crabgrass.
- 43:55SPEAKER_05: Right?
- 43:56SPEAKER_05: You're familiar with crabgrass.
- 43:57SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I know, I I know one of it.
- 43:59SPEAKER_03: I don't know if I
- 44:00SPEAKER_05: So it's an invasive species at some time, right?
- 44:03SPEAKER_05: And or so my lawn guide told me.
- 44:07SPEAKER_05: Because I refused to pay the bill and he now is telling me why the crabgrass.
- 44:10SPEAKER_05: Anyway, it's a long story.
- 44:12SPEAKER_05: So I got a whole breakdown on it.
- 44:14SPEAKER_05: So crabgrass, invasive species, when it gets into your lawn, it's hard to remove because three times a year it germinates up to 150,000 seeds or seedlings of itself into your lawn.
- 44:37SPEAKER_05: Three times a year.
- 44:38SPEAKER_05: 150,000.
- 44:39SPEAKER_05: I can't count too good, but that's over half a million, I think.
- 44:43SPEAKER_05: And the worst part is that they go dormant.
- 44:47SPEAKER_05: And it could be three years before those seeds sprout.
- 44:53SPEAKER_05: So when you get crabgrass, I don't know why I'm talking crabs, but I've been involved in this, right?
- 44:57SPEAKER_05: And if anybody knows anything about crabgrass, get a hold of me.
- 45:01SPEAKER_05: You sit there and you try and dig it out, or the chemicals to remove crabgrass, by the way, are now illegal in this country.
- 45:09SPEAKER_03: God forbid.
- 45:10SPEAKER_03: Yeah, okay.
- 45:11SPEAKER_05: We can't use them anymore.
- 45:12SPEAKER_05: So there's no effective way of uh controlling them with the chemicals that we used to be able to control them with, right?
- 45:18SPEAKER_05: So that's gone.
- 45:19SPEAKER_00: And what's wrong with it?
- 45:20SPEAKER_00: What's wrong with crabgrass?
- 45:22SPEAKER_03: No, the chemicals.
- 45:23SPEAKER_00: No, no, no.
- 45:23SPEAKER_00: The chemicals?
- 45:24SPEAKER_00: No, the crabgrass.
- 45:25SPEAKER_03: I want to know what's wrong with the chemicals.
- 45:27SPEAKER_00: Well, the chemicals are probably like roundup and stuff, I'm assuming.
- 45:31SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 45:32SPEAKER_05: Probably.
- 45:33SPEAKER_05: But you know what?
- 45:34SPEAKER_05: You can still use it uh cemeteries and uh uh golf courses.
- 45:40SPEAKER_05: So if you're a golf course or a cemetery, walking on that gorgeous goes in.
- 45:44SPEAKER_05: You have no crabgrass to worry about.
- 45:47SPEAKER_05: But if you're not that you you you have to worry about it because I just told you, getting rid of it once you get it, and I got it.
- 45:53SPEAKER_03: So that's Sadine's question.
- 45:55SPEAKER_03: What is the what's the issue with crabgrass?
- 45:57SPEAKER_03: Then what does it do?
- 45:58SPEAKER_05: It's the ugly, it's a weed.
- 45:59SPEAKER_05: They call it grass, but it's a weed.
- 46:01SPEAKER_05: It looks like a weed.
- 46:02SPEAKER_05: It's a broad, flat leaf.
- 46:04SPEAKER_05: And it can, you know, the this it can grow up to five inches long.
- 46:08SPEAKER_05: This broad, fat.
- 46:09SPEAKER_05: So what it does, it chokes out your grass.
- 46:12SPEAKER_05: Right.
- 46:13SPEAKER_05: It slowly, literally, chokes out your regular uh uh regular grass, whatever it could be, the Kentucky blue and all that stuff that we all love to see.
- 46:24SPEAKER_01: Yes, yes, yes.
- 46:25SPEAKER_05: I know, I know.
- 46:26SPEAKER_05: It chokes it out.
- 46:27SPEAKER_05: Like my lawn, my lawn.
- 46:28SPEAKER_05: I'm not I give me a second, because this is important.
- 46:31SPEAKER_05: So my lawn, three years ago, I had a single crab grass plant growing on it on my lawn.
- 46:40SPEAKER_05: You found it.
- 46:41SPEAKER_05: You found her.
- 46:42SPEAKER_05: I didn't know what it was at the time, but I I said, wow, that's kind of a weird looking thing.
- 46:46SPEAKER_05: Let me pull that out.
- 46:47SPEAKER_05: So I pulled it out, and then next thing I know, there's ten of them in a group.
- 46:52SPEAKER_05: Oh.
- 46:53SPEAKER_05: Same spot.
- 46:54SPEAKER_05: Same spot.
- 46:54SPEAKER_05: I just pulled that out.
- 46:55SPEAKER_05: I wonder what the hell happened.
- 46:57SPEAKER_05: Huh.
- 46:57SPEAKER_05: Anyways, pulled that one out.
- 46:59SPEAKER_05: By the end of that year, I had a corner of my front lawn that was all crabgrass.
- 47:05SPEAKER_05: So I called the lawn guys and said, Guys, I need a service here at my place.
- 47:10SPEAKER_05: Here's my problem.
- 47:11SPEAKER_05: And of course, I won't mention any names.
- 47:14SPEAKER_05: They said, Oh, yeah, we got you covered.
- 47:15SPEAKER_05: That's gonna be, you know,$42.95 a week times, oh, you're gonna need at least 10, and then we're gonna then don't forget we got a roll and the aeration stuff, and then we got to put the lights and the not a problem, Mr.
- 47:28SPEAKER_05: Viola.
- 47:28SPEAKER_05: We got you covered, it's only gonna cost you X number of dollars.
- 47:30SPEAKER_05: I said, I don't care how much it costs as long as you take care of my crabgrass.
- 47:35SPEAKER_05: So they started doing it last year.
- 47:39SPEAKER_05: I have no grass left.
- 47:40SPEAKER_05: It's all cra it's all weed.
- 47:43SPEAKER_05: The entire front lawn of the Viola residence is now taken over by crabgrass.
- 47:50SPEAKER_01: And and when they said they were gonna take it.
- 47:53SPEAKER_02: I called Mr.
- 47:55SPEAKER_05: So-and-so and said, Mr.
- 47:58SPEAKER_05: So-and-so, I don't have any lawn left.
- 48:02SPEAKER_05: I had lawn before I employed your services.
- 48:06SPEAKER_05: Now I have no lawn.
- 48:07SPEAKER_05: Can you please explain that?
- 48:09SPEAKER_05: Well, we'd have to send somebody over to well, yeah.
- 48:12SPEAKER_05: I send somebody over.
- 48:13SPEAKER_05: Of course, you're gonna have to send somebody over.
- 48:15SPEAKER_05: Get somebody over here.
- 48:16SPEAKER_05: Three months later, I get somebody there, which is like two weeks ago, just so you know.
- 48:22SPEAKER_05: And young lady, she says, Oh, you have crabgrass.
- 48:29SPEAKER_05: I was gonna strangle her, but what saved her?
- 48:32SPEAKER_05: My neighbor was out talking to another neighbor in their front lot, and I knew it would have been bad if I started yelling.
- 48:38SPEAKER_05: But anyway, so I said, Yes, I have crabgrass.
- 48:41SPEAKER_05: This crabgrass that you see here and this whole thing, it used to live right here in this one little tiny spot.
- 48:48SPEAKER_05: It was about four inches wide, right there.
- 48:51SPEAKER_05: Then I called you guys to take care of it.
- 48:56SPEAKER_05: And obviously, you took care of it because what was this big is now sixteen hundred square feet.
- 49:04SPEAKER_03: The caretakers are crap, right?
- 49:06SPEAKER_05: They took care of it, they nurtured it.
- 49:10SPEAKER_03: Oh my god.
- 49:12SPEAKER_05: Anyways, that's how I found out about all this.
- 49:14SPEAKER_03: This is an invasive species at its work, right?
- 49:16SPEAKER_03: That's exactly what it was at the work.
- 49:18SPEAKER_05: 50,000 seeds three times a year, and they go they they go dormant and they wait for the perfect conditions to germinate and grow.
- 49:33SPEAKER_05: That's all that's all I want to say, even basically.
- 49:35SPEAKER_05: That's enough.
- 49:35SPEAKER_03: It's a good vent.
- 49:36SPEAKER_03: That's the venture.
- 49:37SPEAKER_03: I feel better.
- 49:37SPEAKER_03: Thank you very much for the case.
- 49:40SPEAKER_00: Let me be a sponsor for that segment.
- 49:42SPEAKER_03: If you want to sponsor the segment, if you're a lawn care company other than the one that screwed up his yard and want to get in on this, get a sponsorship going.
- 49:50SPEAKER_06: Oh God.
- 49:52SPEAKER_05: Anyways, it's a true story, damn it.

- 50:29SPEAKER_05: Uh is well, should be Jean or should be Jean.
- 50:33SPEAKER_03: Yeah, that looks like a French last name.
- 50:34SPEAKER_03: It looks Brindelac.
- 50:36SPEAKER_03: Brindelac.
- 50:37SPEAKER_03: I bet you that's French.
- 50:38SPEAKER_07: Jean Brindel.
- 50:39SPEAKER_07: Brindelac.
- 50:41SPEAKER_03: It's not Wa, it's no, it's Ui.
- 50:47SPEAKER_03: Boy, I got corrected on that one day in my life.
- 50:50SPEAKER_05: That was so funny, though.
- 50:51SPEAKER_03: That was the best.
- 50:52SPEAKER_03: Where was that?
- 50:52SPEAKER_03: That was at a at a Tim Horton's or something like that.
- 50:56SPEAKER_03: It was a coured in uh in Quebec when we were traveling, and I I did all I did everything beautiful.
- 51:09SPEAKER_03: And then, oh okay, she's all happy with me, and then she said something I went, What?
- 51:13SPEAKER_03: And she goes, It's not wah, it's we she gave me this shit after I went through the whole spiel.
- 51:20SPEAKER_03: Nick was near there, weren't you, Nick?
- 51:23SPEAKER_07: Yeah, no, it was uh it was very and I remember because back then my French was a lot better than my French is now.
- 51:29SPEAKER_07: We laughed, and it was good.
- 51:30SPEAKER_07: She was so fancy, like full, like angry.
- 51:37SPEAKER_07: Yeah, it was good.
- 51:39SPEAKER_02: She turned.
- 51:39SPEAKER_02: She turned.
- 51:40SPEAKER_02: Oh, God, that was funny.
- 51:41SPEAKER_05: I don't know where we're going on this program.
- 51:43SPEAKER_05: We're getting uh he says, uh Jean says, uh, hey guys, uh a buddy of mine insisted on trolling a Senko.
- 51:50SPEAKER_05: Oh, trolling a Senko uh the other day.
- 51:53SPEAKER_01: I like that.
- 51:53SPEAKER_01: I like that.
- 51:54SPEAKER_05: You you'd mentioned that some a couple of podcasts ago, by the way.
- 51:58SPEAKER_05: Uh, I gave him a hard time and told him he wasn't going to catch anything, but he ended up landing one of the biggest walleye of the trip.
- 52:06SPEAKER_04: A walleye too.
- 52:07SPEAKER_05: It got it's a walleye.
- 52:09SPEAKER_05: I love it.
- 52:10SPEAKER_05: It got me wondering how often we limit ourselves by fishing a bait the way we're supposed to.
- 52:16SPEAKER_05: Are there any uh everyday baits you can think of uh that have used that most anglers will use uh that are overlooking?
- 52:27SPEAKER_05: I don't know what the hell he's saying there.
- 52:29SPEAKER_05: Baits you think have uses most anglers are overlooking.
- 52:32SPEAKER_05: You mentioned uh a couple of podcasts ago, somebody said to us, if you could only have one bait and one bait only, and you had to survive, you know, catching fish, and you can only have one bait, and I picked one, you picked the Senko.
- 52:44SPEAKER_05: And I said to you, that's pretty one-dimensional.
- 52:48SPEAKER_05: Uh right?
- 52:48SPEAKER_05: I said to you, Senko, like that's pretty one-dimensional.
- 52:52SPEAKER_05: Like, what are you gonna do with senko?
- 52:53SPEAKER_05: Well, there you go.
- 52:54SPEAKER_05: I was wrong again.
- 52:55SPEAKER_02: There you go.
- 52:57SPEAKER_02: The biggest walleye trolling a Senko.
- 52:59SPEAKER_02: That's awesome.
- 53:00SPEAKER_02: Like, that just goes to show you, right?
- 53:02SPEAKER_03: You you can't judge and prejudge anything.
- 53:05SPEAKER_05: It's so true, eh?
- 53:06SPEAKER_05: We we are so conditioned.
- 53:08SPEAKER_05: We we we read a package and we say, Oh, okay.
- 53:13SPEAKER_05: Boom.
- 53:14SPEAKER_05: Locked in.
- 53:15SPEAKER_05: That's all I can do with this thing.
- 53:17SPEAKER_05: Uh it's gotta be used that way during those conditions, uh, otherwise I'm gonna ridicule somebody who doesn't do it that way, right?
- 53:25SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 53:26SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 53:26SPEAKER_03: It brings up a good point.
- 53:28SPEAKER_03: Brings up a great point, especially other baits.
- 53:31SPEAKER_03: Like, I don't, I don't, it's hard to put it's hard to put.
- 53:35SPEAKER_03: I remember one time I was fishing with a guy uh in Trenton, Mike Mason, great guy, and he was a spinnerbait king.
- 53:44SPEAKER_03: He was the beast, he was a beast on spinnerbait and flats for largemouth bass.
- 53:49SPEAKER_03: And I wasn't, and I didn't really like throwing a spinnerbait, and I love throwing worms and jigs.
- 53:54SPEAKER_03: And I and I took a seven-inch or seven or ten-inch plastic worm, like remember the curly tail, like a power worm or something like that, that had a full curly tail.
- 54:03SPEAKER_03: Just throwing it in your own, letting it drop into the pockets and all that stuff.
- 54:06SPEAKER_03: And and I looked at him and he says, You catch all these fish on spinnerbaits only, you don't use anything else, right?
- 54:11SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 54:11SPEAKER_03: So I instantly I said, Okay, I'm gonna fish this like a spinnerbait.
- 54:14SPEAKER_03: I had a weight on it.
- 54:15SPEAKER_03: I just cast it out and started reeling it back.
- 54:17SPEAKER_03: So that curly tail is coming through.
- 54:18SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 54:19SPEAKER_03: I caught about 11 fish that day, none dropping it in the holes, none threw it like that, and I caught about 10 or 11 fish.
- 54:25SPEAKER_03: I think he caught one or two.
- 54:26SPEAKER_03: So that was a plastic worm that you should not, you know, even think about back then.
- 54:30SPEAKER_03: This is like 25 years ago, swimming it back, and it just caught fish.
- 54:34SPEAKER_03: So I can totally see.
- 54:36SPEAKER_03: I'm sure every bait has a way of I can imagine.
- 54:38SPEAKER_00: I know I've heard people who jig chatter baits, and I could see that being a lake trout bait.
- 54:43SPEAKER_00: Like it would be a great Laker bait.
- 54:45SPEAKER_05: Yeah, well, when you take into account that that jig head was originally designed only for vertical fishing, it's a bladed jig.
- 54:53SPEAKER_03: Yeah, and it's a flipping, it's a flipping jig with a blade in the front of it, right?
- 54:56SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 54:57SPEAKER_05: So that in itself, those two put together is a contradiction of what we believed was one's horizontal and one's vertical.
- 55:04SPEAKER_05: You combine them and you've got it's you know, and it's something it's in your head too because of course it is.
- 55:09SPEAKER_03: Because I finally, when I started working with chatterbaits, bladed jig, I I was in a situation a couple of years ago, in the this time of year almost in October, and I had a school of largemouth.
- 55:19SPEAKER_03: I knew there were largemouth, I caught one on something, or I can't remember how I caught them, maybe one on the chatterbait, but but then it shot right down, and I could see them on my live scope.
- 55:27SPEAKER_03: So I did that exact thing.
- 55:27SPEAKER_03: I threw it out, let it drop to the bottom, like that.
- 55:30SPEAKER_03: First cast, doink, like a second or first, you know.
- 55:33SPEAKER_03: I started catching them on the bottom, using it as a jig, and I it opened.
- 55:36SPEAKER_03: Now I have no problem doing it, but it took me so much, like it just took me a shot in the head to say, hey, slap in the face, try something different, dummy, because they were stopped biting and it worked.
- 55:44SPEAKER_05: So probably the most extreme example I've got of that is uh uh using a Johnson Silver Minnow for a vertical presentation, yeah.
- 55:54SPEAKER_05: Totally vertical in reeds and stuff.
- 55:56SPEAKER_05: Because it's nice and heavy, too, right?
- 55:57SPEAKER_05: Just dropping it in those little openings in reeds that are, you know, put the all the buttons.
- 56:01SPEAKER_03: So that hang over the reed and just sort of no kidding, eh?
- 56:04SPEAKER_05: Or if the mat is pushed in and the mat's just got, you know, that you've got the two or three stocks of reeds and the mats pushed right up against it, but there is a little opening just here.
- 56:12SPEAKER_05: Yeah, dropping a Johnson silver middle in that hole.
- 56:16SPEAKER_05: That makes a lot of sense.
- 56:17SPEAKER_05: Was totally bizarre at the time, and but yet worked great.
- 56:20SPEAKER_05: Yeah, works and it's weedless.
- 56:23SPEAKER_05: Flash on the way down, weedless as hell.
- 56:25SPEAKER_05: You can put all kinds of you know, munchy stuff on the back of it, yeah.
- 56:30SPEAKER_05: Uh plastics, uh pork, or or whatever you want to use, but yet you don't think of it as anything other than a nice horse, and it is a great horizontal presentation for sure.
- 56:40SPEAKER_05: One of the best.
- 56:40SPEAKER_03: That's why you don't that's why why would you do anything else with it, right?
- 56:43SPEAKER_03: Because it works so well.
- 56:44SPEAKER_05: But try flipping it vertically in uh in pockets and holes.
- 56:48SPEAKER_05: Now we're talking primarily for obviously bass.
- 56:51SPEAKER_05: Um, but I I think there's a big, huge number of baits that we need to do a little more experimenting with, we being the fishing fraternity, and sort of get out of being locked into the fact that this bait is used for this.
- 57:10SPEAKER_00: Yeah, it probably takes the new guy sometimes.
- 57:13SPEAKER_00: Like I think this guy wrote in that I don't know if his buddy, I'm sure his buddy wasn't a very experienced angler who's trolling the Senko.
- 57:19SPEAKER_00: Maybe it takes that guy to come in and say, Well, I'm gonna use it this way.
- 57:22SPEAKER_00: This is how I look.
- 57:23SPEAKER_00: That's usually what it takes.
- 57:24SPEAKER_00: That's usually what it takes.
- 57:25SPEAKER_05: Somebody who is not locked in, yeah, has no preconceived notion of what's right and wrong.
- 57:30SPEAKER_05: And I another great example, not of a bait, but certainly a presentation.
- 57:35SPEAKER_05: Uh, you and I have talked about it on this show many times, but it was one of those moments in our fishing careers where the light went off and went, whoa.
- 57:45SPEAKER_05: And it changed the way we fished this presentation from that day forward, and that is dragging uh tubes on the bottom as opposed to working them.
- 57:56SPEAKER_03: Hop and drop.
- 57:57SPEAKER_03: Exactly.
- 57:58SPEAKER_05: So we learned one one weekend uh by by somebody else's example uh that was not doing it purposely.
- 58:08SPEAKER_05: Yeah, but had that rod tucked under the arm.
- 58:12SPEAKER_03: You can't do much when it's tucked under your arm except for have a cigarette or do whatever you want to do.
- 58:18SPEAKER_05: And and and we're you know doing nothing, and this thing is dragging and boom, getting fish, a giant fish to hit his tube before dragging was even a thing.
- 58:30SPEAKER_05: Yeah, that's how we discovered it by accident, and then since then, of course, dragging that week that that happened, that it just went viral in an analog sense.
- 58:43SPEAKER_05: Uh, that uh dragging tubes was a great way to catch uh bass.
- 58:47SPEAKER_05: And and it since then, I mean, dragging tubes has become a main staple for most uh yeah serious anglers.
- 58:54SPEAKER_03: I I think Dean's right.
- 58:55SPEAKER_03: It takes a lot of times it takes that person that just doesn't know or care.
- 58:58SPEAKER_03: Yeah, yeah, you know what I mean.
- 59:00SPEAKER_03: No offense to them, they're so efficient, they don't know any different, right?
- 59:03SPEAKER_03: A Sank oh, this must be used for large mouth bass as possible to sink, it's gotta be close to the bottom, blah, blah, blah.
- 59:07SPEAKER_03: No, whatever.
- 59:08SPEAKER_05: Bottom line is don't let don't try not to limit yourself.
- 59:10SPEAKER_05: Experiment.
- 59:11SPEAKER_05: Go out, get a new bait that you've uh never used before.
- 59:14SPEAKER_05: Go out and play around with it, do do different things, even hard baits, you know, crankbaits, uh, jerk baits.
- 59:20SPEAKER_03: Crankbait as a top water, pull it down, go back up.
- 59:22SPEAKER_03: Exactly.
- 59:23SPEAKER_03: Down, go back up, stuff like that.
- 59:24SPEAKER_03: That's you know, out of the box, but it can work.
- 59:28SPEAKER_05: Uh, there you go, John.
- 59:29SPEAKER_05: Hopefully, we uh we answered your question.
- 59:31SPEAKER_05: Now, is that uh eligible for email?
- 59:34SPEAKER_05: That's an old one from email.
- 59:35SPEAKER_05: Oh, it's an email.
- 59:37SPEAKER_03: But thank you.
- 59:38SPEAKER_03: Merci, Jean.
- 59:39SPEAKER_02: We appreciate that, buddy.
- 59:42SPEAKER_02: All right, so we uh watch John not even be French.
- 59:45SPEAKER_03: Right and you say, You assholes.
- 59:47SPEAKER_03: What the hell is going on here?
- 59:50SPEAKER_05: Uh so we've been driving by this lake for better part of 40 years, and and we heard a lot of stories because it's a very unique body of water.
- 59:58SPEAKER_05: And uh this past uh spring summer period, we had an opportunity to stop in and actually shoot a program on it, or better yet, Dean, Mr.
- 1:00:09SPEAKER_05: Dean Taylor, yeah, uh shot an episode there.
- 1:00:13SPEAKER_05: And so it was our first time seeing this very unique, incredible body of water in northwestern Ontario called Wabagoon Lake.
- 1:00:22SPEAKER_05: And the big thing about Wabagoon that we had heard two things, two very important things about Wabagoon.
- 1:00:28SPEAKER_05: Number one was that it had some huge walleye, and people were raving about these trophy-sized walleye that Wabagoon had.
- 1:00:38SPEAKER_05: But the other thing that made it even more unique, because there's a lot of big walleye lakes up in northwestern Ontario, but none of them fish like this one because the water clarity on Wabagoon is zero.
- 1:00:50SPEAKER_05: Yeah, zero.
- 1:00:53SPEAKER_05: And so uh we knew this going in, and we armed ourselves with all kinds of uh things that we thought you would use in a non-clear environment for fishing.
- 1:01:04SPEAKER_05: We had probably had more tackle on that chute than we have on any chute that I can think of the last couple of years, because we really didn't know what was going to work and not work.
- 1:01:15SPEAKER_05: But and then I'll just shut up after this comment out, let you two jump in on this that we're there.
- 1:01:21SPEAKER_05: I think I speak for all of us.
- 1:01:27SPEAKER_05: Had we not had forward-facing sonar, we would not have completed our mission on Wabagun.
- 1:01:37SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I would say so.
- 1:01:38SPEAKER_00: Especially so some context, which we haven't this show's not in post-production yet, so I don't know what's going to make it to the final cut, but behind the scenes, this was a super intimidating shoot because we just got back from a big we were on our way back east after a long trip to northwestern Ontario.
- 1:01:55SPEAKER_00: We got beat up so bad by the wind and the rain and the cold for like five days straight.
- 1:02:01SPEAKER_00: We get to Wabagoon and it's muddy and wavy and freezing cold and foggy, and we were looking at it, it's like looking at the map.
- 1:02:10SPEAKER_00: We we talked to a uh a guide there who was amazing, Simon, and he was like, you know, this is the worst conditions you could possibly be out here with.
- 1:02:19SPEAKER_00: So it was intimidating as it as it is.
- 1:02:22SPEAKER_00: So we ended up doing more prep than I've ever done on a shoot.
- 1:02:26SPEAKER_00: I've only been here four years, but more prep than I've ever seen.
- 1:02:30SPEAKER_00: We did not even bring the cameras out the first day.
- 1:02:32SPEAKER_00: It was like, I think it was it was like 45k casting 60 something.
- 1:02:38SPEAKER_00: Yeah, so in range.
- 1:02:39SPEAKER_00: And range.
- 1:02:41SPEAKER_00: So we didn't even bring the cameras out.
- 1:02:42SPEAKER_00: We just went out and scouted.
- 1:02:44SPEAKER_00: And what scouting is for us now is just put the live scope in, put the trolling motor down, scan the area, and look for anything unique, which in this case was fish that were on their own.
- 1:02:56SPEAKER_00: Because Wabagoon is loaded with fish.
- 1:02:59SPEAKER_05: We didn't learn that till a little bit later, yeah.
- 1:03:02SPEAKER_05: Yeah, it's getting ahead a little bit.
- 1:03:03SPEAKER_05: Yeah, we saw as soon as we put the scope down and uh started wandering around.
- 1:03:08SPEAKER_05: We we immediately and by the way, Simon, the guide um who was with us that first day when we did not fish, you couldn't fish.
- 1:03:16SPEAKER_05: And I mean, we could barely hold on some of the spots that he was trying to show us because the wind was blowing so bad, but enough to mark them uh on our on our units, right?
- 1:03:29SPEAKER_05: But every time we dropped um the sonar down, every time we put the transducer into water, even though it was horrific conditions, immediately we would see all kinds of fish at the bottom.
- 1:03:42SPEAKER_05: And when I say all kinds, I don't I don't think there was one place that we dropped that we didn't immediately see six to seven, eight fish swimming around down there, right?
- 1:03:53SPEAKER_05: Yeah they were just everywhere.
- 1:03:55SPEAKER_03: Whatever they were, whatever they were, but there was definitely a whatever they were.
- 1:03:58SPEAKER_05: We knew that there was life on these humps.
- 1:04:00SPEAKER_05: These are mid-lake humps because that's the pattern on Wabagoon.
- 1:04:03SPEAKER_05: That's the other thing about Wabagoon that we discovered.
- 1:04:06SPEAKER_05: Unlike most other lakes, uh the humps play a big role.
- 1:04:10SPEAKER_05: Oh, in the world.
- 1:04:11SPEAKER_00: And that's not a secret at all.
- 1:04:12SPEAKER_00: Like when you say anything to people up north about that little flake, they say, Oh, so you're out on the humps?
- 1:04:18SPEAKER_00: Yeah, every the high weird everyone knows it.
- 1:04:21SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 1:04:22SPEAKER_05: Now I wonder like, and we didn't test this, but I wonder if the points or the more traditional holding areas would have worked.
- 1:04:34SPEAKER_05: Because we didn't fish any.
- 1:04:35SPEAKER_00: I'm sure they do.
- 1:04:36SPEAKER_00: It's just a monster of a body of water.
- 1:04:38SPEAKER_00: You could spend your life on that.
- 1:04:40SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 1:04:40SPEAKER_03: I think those humps.
- 1:04:42SPEAKER_03: So when when we were planning this trip out, um, I was talking to Francois, the lodge owner, and uh he's saying, Oh, September.
- 1:04:53SPEAKER_03: Well, we're driving by a bud, so either you want to shoot with us or not.
- 1:04:56SPEAKER_03: I mean, if it's no good, tell me right now.
- 1:04:58SPEAKER_03: He says, Well, you guys know what you're doing, so maybe we'll give it a shot and all that stuff.
- 1:05:03SPEAKER_03: And um, and he he made it very clear that if you're gonna fish that lake and peak, it's about June.
- 1:05:11SPEAKER_03: He said, In June, I would love to have you guys here because you're gonna catch all kinds of fish.
- 1:05:16SPEAKER_03: That's when I'll bet you they're up on those humps like crazy.
- 1:05:18SPEAKER_03: I I would assume.
- 1:05:19SPEAKER_03: You know what I mean?
- 1:05:20SPEAKER_03: After the post spawn and all that, because that's what he was talking.
- 1:05:22SPEAKER_03: That's the only thing he talked to me about was humps.
- 1:05:24SPEAKER_03: Didn't say anything about flats, anything else, weed beds, anything else.
- 1:05:27SPEAKER_03: He just said the humps, the humps, the humps.
- 1:05:28SPEAKER_03: So I got a feeling that in June they were But they were there.
- 1:05:32SPEAKER_03: There was fish there.
- 1:05:32SPEAKER_03: But I bet you in June they'd be filthy with them there.
- 1:05:35SPEAKER_03: You know, you see schools on every one of those.
- 1:05:37SPEAKER_05: All those other fish that are roaming.
- 1:05:38SPEAKER_03: Yeah, they could all be converging around those humps and that my guess, anyways.
- 1:05:43SPEAKER_05: What a what an incredible fishery though.
- 1:05:46SPEAKER_05: It's amazing.
- 1:05:46SPEAKER_05: Zero visibility.
- 1:05:48SPEAKER_05: Yeah, it's it's unnerving.
- 1:05:50SPEAKER_05: It's weird.
- 1:05:51SPEAKER_03: It's very uh it kills your confidence.
- 1:05:54SPEAKER_03: I got a fish in this yet.
- 1:05:55SPEAKER_03: Uh this is I can't if I can't see the fish can't see, right?
- 1:05:58SPEAKER_03: That's your that's your mind frame, but Oh you see.
- 1:06:02SPEAKER_06: That's crazy.
- 1:06:03SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 1:06:04SPEAKER_05: Although although I have to say, I think see, conventional thinking because when you talk to the locals, there's a certain type of jig and and and not even a preferred color, but uh certain jig.
- 1:06:20SPEAKER_05: Live bait is a must.
- 1:06:22SPEAKER_05: Uh they don't throw anything but live bait.
- 1:06:24SPEAKER_05: There's some plastics that are used, but not not that much.
- 1:06:28SPEAKER_05: Um but uh we kept thinking, all right, if there's uh zero visibility, wouldn't you think that you want something that at least has a bit of a flash?
- 1:06:40SPEAKER_05: Now we're fishing 20, what was it, Dean?
- 1:06:42SPEAKER_05: 20, 25 feet.
- 1:06:44SPEAKER_01: Yeah, about that, yeah.
- 1:06:45SPEAKER_05: And it wasn't until Dean put on this this little bit of a tiny little blade uh on the bottom of his jig that things kind of all of a sudden, whoa, yeah, okay.
- 1:06:59SPEAKER_05: And the rest is an incredible story that you're gonna see on the uh on the episode in the 2027 Fish and Canada season that's slowly approaching, by the way.
- 1:07:11SPEAKER_03: What was the so just to let the audience again that's never been up there, there were other lakes off of the lake that you could reach.
- 1:07:17SPEAKER_03: What were the names of the old lakes?
- 1:07:18SPEAKER_03: Trapper trap trapped or trapped trapped?
- 1:07:20SPEAKER_03: Trapped was one and the other baker?
- 1:07:22SPEAKER_03: No, that's no that was Simon's last night.
- 1:07:24SPEAKER_03: Simon's last night.
- 1:07:26SPEAKER_03: Um, there was anyways.
- 1:07:27SPEAKER_03: There's a couple other lakes that do have clean water in them or cleaner water, not the cleanest in the world, but definitely much cleaner water.
- 1:07:33SPEAKER_03: And you they're all navigable.
- 1:07:34SPEAKER_03: It's kind of a cool boat ride.
- 1:07:36SPEAKER_03: That was a cool boat ride going through these little things.
- 1:07:38SPEAKER_05: That was the most to me, the most exciting part of that whole shoot.
- 1:07:41SPEAKER_05: That was a cool boat ride.
- 1:07:42SPEAKER_05: I mean that and watching those big walleye wallowing down there on uh on our our garmin units.
- 1:07:48SPEAKER_05: Oh my gosh.
- 1:07:50SPEAKER_05: That and the and the trips into those small lakes.
- 1:07:52SPEAKER_03: Those small lakes, they were they were nice and clean, and they had smallmouth and walleye and pike as well, and whitefish.
- 1:07:58SPEAKER_05: We found a school of whitefish that was really cool there, and fishable water because the wind and the conditions were horrific on the main lake.
- 1:08:05SPEAKER_05: We went into the these small lakes just to see if we could get out of the the weather, and we did.
- 1:08:11SPEAKER_03: And Dean got a good start on the show doing that.
- 1:08:13SPEAKER_03: He got some nice smallmouth.
- 1:08:15SPEAKER_00: Yeah, remember what we were doing was hot, like we picked the only spot on the lake without wind, and there was fish there.
- 1:08:20SPEAKER_00: It just worked out.
- 1:08:21SPEAKER_00: Fish everywhere.
- 1:08:23SPEAKER_03: Remember though, that we should talk about that school of white fish that we saw because it was so cold.
- 1:08:28SPEAKER_03: We were we saw a school.
- 1:08:29SPEAKER_03: So there's a there was a definite thermocline in this body of water, and uh, I think it was Bait, it was over that lake.
- 1:08:36SPEAKER_03: Trap lake, yeah.
- 1:08:37SPEAKER_03: And uh there was a thermocline, and then we found a school of fish right in an area where Simon gave us uh a waypoint for smallmo, I think it was.
- 1:08:44SPEAKER_03: No, uh crappy.
- 1:08:46SPEAKER_03: Oh, yeah, the crappy on that brush.
- 1:08:47SPEAKER_03: And we thought that's what they were.
- 1:08:48SPEAKER_03: That's right.
- 1:08:49SPEAKER_03: And we went out, we think it's crappy, but they're too big, they're not blah, blah.
- 1:08:52SPEAKER_03: And it was just a straight line of fish on our on our gambling screen.
- 1:08:56SPEAKER_03: As a matter of fact, I found I recorded the images of that on traditional side down view and on live scope.
- 1:09:03SPEAKER_03: So I'm gonna try and get the boys or something to post together, put together the differences and show them.
- 1:09:07SPEAKER_03: But it ended up we dropped an aqua view down because we had to figure out what it was.
- 1:09:11SPEAKER_03: So we dropped a camera down, and sure as hell, it was white fish down there.
- 1:09:14SPEAKER_03: And Dean tried his ass off.
- 1:09:16SPEAKER_03: He dropped jigs and he dropped this, that, and the other, and not one of them in hundreds of fish.
- 1:09:20SPEAKER_03: He dropped that right in the when we dropped the camera down, it was right between like there.
- 1:09:25SPEAKER_03: Here's the fish, and here's the camera.
- 1:09:26SPEAKER_03: So we know he was dropping his jig right down in the same right now.
- 1:09:29SPEAKER_03: They wouldn't even touch it, they wouldn't even look at it.
- 1:09:32SPEAKER_03: As a matter of fact, they swim away from it, didn't they?
- 1:09:34SPEAKER_05: White fish are like that though, don't you find in a lot of cases when they're when they're when they're going to bite, yeah, they are the hardest fish to catch.
- 1:09:42SPEAKER_03: Yeah, yeah.
- 1:09:43SPEAKER_03: You can sometimes convince other fish that aren't gonna bite, but but a whitey, oh my god, yeah.
- 1:09:48SPEAKER_03: I mean, when they're suspended like that, we've learned through the past too, because we saw it on uh we saw it on KB Lake, right, Dean?
- 1:09:55SPEAKER_03: Remember up there?
- 1:09:57SPEAKER_00: It happens at 88.
- 1:09:58SPEAKER_00: Yeah, it happens at 88.
- 1:09:59SPEAKER_03: Lodge 88, and they're right by the lodge there.
- 1:10:01SPEAKER_03: That's another place.
- 1:10:01SPEAKER_03: Uh there's a few places that we see it.
- 1:10:03SPEAKER_03: When they suspend like that in a line almost at the same depth, just don't even bother with it because you might you might have something better than we do.
- 1:10:10SPEAKER_03: We didn't have the right gear either.
- 1:10:11SPEAKER_03: Maybe you can use a fly or something.
- 1:10:12SPEAKER_03: I don't think so.
- 1:10:13SPEAKER_03: But they're tough to get.
- 1:10:15SPEAKER_03: They're on the bottom, they're feeding on the bottom.
- 1:10:17SPEAKER_03: Yeah, it's different.
- 1:10:17SPEAKER_03: But man, it was it was so it's frustrating.
- 1:10:20SPEAKER_03: I mean, they're nice white fish.
- 1:10:21SPEAKER_03: These things look like two and three pounders on the on the skull or on the camera.
- 1:10:24SPEAKER_05: Now we're not doing it justice when we say a school of.
- 1:10:29SPEAKER_05: Because, you know, a school of to me on a screen, a school is, you know, like a blob of fish, and that's a school.
- 1:10:36SPEAKER_05: No, no, no, no, no.
- 1:10:37SPEAKER_05: This was not a school.
- 1:10:39SPEAKER_05: What this was was the bottom two feet of the lake, two maybe even three feet of the bottom of the lake was solid fish.
- 1:10:51SPEAKER_05: And you could what we did, we we ran to the end of the school, which was like a quarter mile, it seemed, up the lake before the school kind of petered out.
- 1:11:00SPEAKER_05: So this is not a ball.
- 1:11:02SPEAKER_05: This is the bottom of the lake covered with these living organisms, and they turned out to be white fish because up until we dropped the camera down, we thought they had to be crappy.
- 1:11:12SPEAKER_05: There's nothing else that would be that kind of that kind of big number schooling up, bunching together, but even crappy wouldn't do that.
- 1:11:21SPEAKER_03: It was school like that.
- 1:11:22SPEAKER_00: Crappy was school in a more time I've seen that was, and you and I were somewhere in Muskoka, and it would they ended up white horse or reds.
- 1:11:32SPEAKER_00: That golf course uh place big one.
- 1:11:35SPEAKER_05: The big one.
- 1:11:36SPEAKER_05: Yes, and we had to do like a base, and we had to drop the camera down to say the same thing.
- 1:11:40SPEAKER_05: Dean and I were out fishing, yeah, and it was exactly the same uh sort of scenario, and we and we were going crazy.
- 1:11:47SPEAKER_05: They got a bite, but they wouldn't bite.
- 1:11:49SPEAKER_05: So then finally we said, All right, we gotta drop the camera down.
- 1:11:52SPEAKER_05: And lo and behold, drop it down.
- 1:11:53SPEAKER_05: It's it's uh these suckers.
- 1:11:57SPEAKER_05: Wow, it was crazy.
- 1:11:58SPEAKER_05: You're right.
- 1:11:58SPEAKER_05: That was the same thing.
- 1:12:00SPEAKER_03: They're the same type of fish.
- 1:12:01SPEAKER_03: The sucker moat, like a white fish has got a sucker moat that feeds off the bottom and all that, and those.
- 1:12:05SPEAKER_03: I wonder if it's you know what?
- 1:12:06SPEAKER_00: I wonder if there's like a hatch underneath them.
- 1:12:08SPEAKER_03: Well, those guys were on the thermoclang.
- 1:12:10SPEAKER_03: These whiteies were on the thermoclang.
- 1:12:11SPEAKER_03: That's what I mean.
- 1:12:12SPEAKER_00: Like if something's hatching, say it's mud underneath them and then all hatching up, and then but then there should be feeding, so and they should be all over the different levels, and yeah, they were it was weird.
- 1:12:22SPEAKER_05: That was definitely weird.
- 1:12:23SPEAKER_05: But the highlight of the whole thing was when we figured out how to get big walleye.
- 1:12:30SPEAKER_05: Um, we'd Dean had caught several uh smaller versions of a walleye.
- 1:12:36SPEAKER_05: Um, but you know, for our show, we we always strive to get into a little better quality because we can only show you five or six, anyways, as we talked about at the beginning of this podcast.
- 1:12:46SPEAKER_05: So we really worked hard to figure out how do we get the bigger fish to bite, because you couldn't really tell the difference between um you know a 15 to 18 inch walleye and a 24 to 26 inch walleye on live scope at 30 feet, 30, 35 feet.
- 1:13:07SPEAKER_05: But uh eventually we figured it out.
- 1:13:10SPEAKER_05: And when we did, I personally enjoyed that shoot so much, even though I didn't do any fishing, I enjoyed it just watching the screen.
- 1:13:20SPEAKER_05: Okay.
- 1:13:20SPEAKER_05: And and and and watching when you were doing the right thing and when you were couldn't quite do the right thing because of conditions, right?
- 1:13:29SPEAKER_05: Yeah, and you could see that it just like it was a light bulb going off and saying, Yes, that's it.
- 1:13:37SPEAKER_05: That's and every time he did it, he caught big fish, as you'll see on the up.
- 1:13:41SPEAKER_05: The episode is stunning, is the only way I can describe it.
- 1:13:45SPEAKER_05: Um, so make sure you don't miss the Wabagoon uh fish and cat episode coming up in 2027 season, which isn't that far away, by the way.
- 1:13:52SPEAKER_03: Not that far away for sure.
- 1:13:55SPEAKER_05: If nothing else, I think it's a great classroom environment because that episode is all going to be it's going to be about learning to do the right thing.
- 1:14:06SPEAKER_05: Oh, yeah.
- 1:14:07SPEAKER_05: And when you do the right thing, there's the results.
- 1:14:10SPEAKER_00: I learned so much on that.
- 1:14:11SPEAKER_00: I mean, even like stuff I haven't kind of had the chances we've been back to apply again.
- 1:14:15SPEAKER_00: But the one main thing I learned, and there'll be a bunch more in the episode, but I'll give a bit of a teaser here is that when you watch it on LiveScope and you and this is for people obviously who have it and are sh are kind of more experienced with cherry-picking fish, just because it looks like you hit it does not mean you hit it.
- 1:14:31SPEAKER_00: Because you can really tell it like they'll show you when they s when they saw it.
- 1:14:36SPEAKER_00: A lot of the times when you think you cast at them and they don't really pay attention, and and you're kind of like, oh, okay, that one it like it, it's not interested.
- 1:14:44SPEAKER_00: You pro you probably didn't hit it.
- 1:14:46SPEAKER_00: He didn't see it.
- 1:14:47SPEAKER_00: He didn't see it.
- 1:14:47SPEAKER_00: He didn't see it.
- 1:14:48SPEAKER_02: Well, in that water condition, yeah, for sure he didn't see it.
- 1:14:52SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 1:14:52SPEAKER_03: I'll give you uh go a step further.
- 1:14:55SPEAKER_03: That happens in every water condition.
- 1:14:57SPEAKER_03: I don't care if it's gin clear, they don't see every cast.
- 1:15:00SPEAKER_03: You have to have the right cast on them.
- 1:15:02SPEAKER_03: I've learned that one.
- 1:15:03SPEAKER_03: Baya Quinti, for example, on the weekend I just went by.
- 1:15:07SPEAKER_03: That water is way cleaner, and yet, nope, missed him.
- 1:15:10SPEAKER_03: You're right.
- 1:15:11SPEAKER_03: Nope, missed him.
- 1:15:12SPEAKER_03: You're right.
- 1:15:12SPEAKER_03: He's gonna see it this time.
- 1:15:14SPEAKER_03: Boom.
- 1:15:14SPEAKER_03: Got him.
- 1:15:15SPEAKER_03: It's freaky.
- 1:15:16SPEAKER_05: There's also there's also the factor of keep in mind, you're looking at at a slice on on the screen.
- 1:15:24SPEAKER_05: Basically, you're seeing your bait dropping, you're seeing the fish that you want to target, and and those two come together, and you assume that you are exactly it's like an XYZ thing, right?
- 1:15:37SPEAKER_05: You assume that you are on the spot, but you could be over there.
- 1:15:40SPEAKER_05: That's right, three, four feet, whatever, and missing them.
- 1:15:43SPEAKER_05: And he could have his back to you for that matter.
- 1:15:45SPEAKER_05: That's right.
- 1:15:45SPEAKER_05: Right.
- 1:15:46SPEAKER_05: So you've got the the the I think the biggest lesson, uh Dean, hopefully you'll agree with us.
- 1:15:54SPEAKER_05: The biggest lesson uh that we have to share on that episode is don't give up.
- 1:16:00SPEAKER_05: For sure.
- 1:16:00SPEAKER_05: Don't give up.
- 1:16:02SPEAKER_05: You missed them or you say you missed them, don't give up.
- 1:16:05SPEAKER_05: Go back.
- 1:16:06SPEAKER_05: And three, four times, five times.
- 1:16:08SPEAKER_05: One fish, it took eight times before Dean got its attention.
- 1:16:12SPEAKER_05: And each one of those eight drops were perfect on the screen.
- 1:16:16SPEAKER_05: They were perfect.
- 1:16:17SPEAKER_05: There was no reason in the world why that fish shouldn't have been all over them.
- 1:16:20SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 1:16:21SPEAKER_05: But obviously, there it wasn't seeing it.
- 1:16:24SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I am starting to notice too, like, you know, I've caught the evolution of having live scope.
- 1:16:30SPEAKER_00: At the first, I kind of thought, okay, there's some fish that just aren't eating.
- 1:16:33SPEAKER_00: You never knew before because you never saw them.
- 1:16:35SPEAKER_00: These just they're not eating today.
- 1:16:37SPEAKER_00: Move on.
- 1:16:37SPEAKER_00: Don't waste your time.
- 1:16:39SPEAKER_00: I almost think every fish, there's a way to get them to hit.
- 1:16:43SPEAKER_00: It's just whether you're willing to waste your whole day on them or not.
- 1:16:46SPEAKER_00: It does seem like there's something that will get them to go eventually.
- 1:16:50SPEAKER_03: But I don't know about that.
- 1:16:52SPEAKER_00: I I I I I want to agree with you on that, but uh it's just weird with some of these fish.
- 1:16:57SPEAKER_00: Like it seems like if you change things up enough, we added a little bit bigger of a blade at one point to the jig, and all of a sudden the one that I had been casting at hit.
- 1:17:06SPEAKER_00: It's just like it seems like there's small adjustments you can make if you're willing to do that.
- 1:17:10SPEAKER_00: Absolutely.
- 1:17:10SPEAKER_03: That's absolutely true.
- 1:17:11SPEAKER_07: Well, I I think it goes back to something, Grandpa, I think you said it is when we try to imitate things down there and we throw things down there, fish know what is fish and what is food, and they might not know what it is that we're throwing, but they know it's not fish.
- 1:17:27SPEAKER_07: So by doing those little micro changes, because they can already realize it's not organic, maybe it it is just what's needed to entice them.
- 1:17:36SPEAKER_05: I don't know in this case whether that would that was it or not.
- 1:17:40SPEAKER_07: I really honestly believe I wasn't there to be fair.
- 1:17:42SPEAKER_05: Yeah, so I honestly believe it was all about location.
- 1:17:45SPEAKER_05: I honestly believe we were not putting it in the right spot, whether it was three feet over, whether it's four feet high, whether whatever the case is, or the fish had his back to to the bait at the time that it dropped in that zone, whatever the case was, I don't think the fish was seeing it.
- 1:18:02SPEAKER_07: Well, what he wants it bad enough.
- 1:18:05SPEAKER_05: When they were seeing it, you got the reaction that you were expecting.
- 1:18:09SPEAKER_05: Now, now, what was surprising, and this might go to what Nick is talking about now.
- 1:18:14SPEAKER_05: A lot of times that fish saw it and the fish went for it, and it would just stop, right?
- 1:18:22SPEAKER_05: And it would just you swear, you swear he ate it.
- 1:18:28SPEAKER_05: I would have loved to have heard uh an audio track of us in that boat.
- 1:18:33SPEAKER_05: Oh, that'll be long.
- 1:18:33SPEAKER_05: You probably could in the GoPro.
- 1:18:35SPEAKER_05: It was like a hockey game.
- 1:18:36SPEAKER_06: The announcers, he's going down there, he's going down, he's wide, oh no.
- 1:18:41SPEAKER_06: We were going.
- 1:18:42SPEAKER_05: That's so true.
- 1:18:43SPEAKER_02: That is so true.
- 1:18:45SPEAKER_05: But what a great experience that was.
- 1:18:47SPEAKER_05: Uh, by the way, I want to uh just before they call us and send us a nasty letter, uh remind folks that the uh community of Dryden is right on that list.
- 1:18:57SPEAKER_05: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 1:18:58SPEAKER_05: That's what uh what uh I guess Wabagoon would be famous for, and it has this wonderful the goon.
- 1:19:04SPEAKER_03: By the way, that's what they call it, the goon.
- 1:19:06SPEAKER_05: And so by the way, the water's so murky on uh on that body water that the saying, the local saying is that um it's what's something about on the goon at noon.
- 1:19:16SPEAKER_05: On the goon on the goon at noon, because they don't go out early in the morning because there's no need because there's no no declarative they can't see so but uh yeah, the community of uh Dryden is right there, of course.
- 1:19:29SPEAKER_05: Uh big uh pulp and paper uh industry.
- 1:19:32SPEAKER_05: And no, that is not why uh Wabagoon has zero visibility, it has absolutely nothing to do with the pulp and paper industry or the town of Dryden, because as we just mentioned, it's surrounded by pristine little lakes that are you know have different levels of clarity, but most of them are are closer to clear than than not.
- 1:19:53SPEAKER_05: But it's a clay base lake.
- 1:19:55SPEAKER_05: That's right.
- 1:19:56SPEAKER_05: And due to the it's not a very deep lake due to the water depth and the amount of humps, hence why everybody fishes humps on Wabagoon.
- 1:20:07SPEAKER_05: Um the clay is constantly being moved.
- 1:20:10SPEAKER_05: Yeah, and it's shifting.
- 1:20:12SPEAKER_03: It's a long lake, lots of wind completely.
- 1:20:14SPEAKER_05: Boy, we we saw that.
- 1:20:15SPEAKER_05: We we saw wind from every different direction.
- 1:20:18SPEAKER_05: Oh my god, in our short four-day stay, three-day stay, whatever it was.
- 1:20:22SPEAKER_05: We saw winds completely turn on that lake.
- 1:20:27SPEAKER_05: Uh for me, and there was not one wind that was better than another.
- 1:20:30SPEAKER_05: They were all just terrible.
- 1:20:33SPEAKER_00: I will say one thing I just remembered.
- 1:20:35SPEAKER_00: Also, on Wabagoon, we saw the biggest fish, I think, I that I've ever seen in my life on Livescope.
- 1:20:43SPEAKER_00: God, I have no idea.
- 1:20:45SPEAKER_00: I forgot they they are known for big muskie in there.
- 1:20:48SPEAKER_00: We were told it wasn't the best time of year to be seeing them, but oh man, I've never seen anything like that on LiveScope.
- 1:20:53SPEAKER_00: It looked like it looked like a sea monster on there.
- 1:20:56SPEAKER_05: And and it was so detailed, yeah.
- 1:20:59SPEAKER_05: It was so detailed, I swear I could see that it had a frown on its face.
- 1:21:06SPEAKER_05: And it was like it was like pissed off, and it was going to go someplace, and it could hardly wait to get to where it was going, and nothing was gonna stop it from where it was going, and it was just singularly focused because it just slowly, and it wasn't real moving real fast, no, it just slowly kept going.
- 1:21:25SPEAKER_05: And it would be, you know, you could see fish scattering from in front of it because this thing was like a machine, and it was just massive.
- 1:21:33SPEAKER_05: Massive.
- 1:21:34SPEAKER_03: Is there a sturgeon in that lake?
- 1:21:36SPEAKER_05: It could it could have been a sturgeon.
- 1:21:37SPEAKER_05: I don't know if there are sturgeon.
- 1:21:38SPEAKER_05: I don't know.
- 1:21:39SPEAKER_05: But it would be as big as a sturgeon.
- 1:21:40SPEAKER_05: It was that big.
- 1:21:41SPEAKER_03: A giant muskie or a sturgeon, probably, right?
- 1:21:44SPEAKER_00: Did we record maybe I'm hoping so we had the card running, um, but oh yeah, I'm hoping we do.
- 1:21:50SPEAKER_03: I don't I didn't I didn't see it in the initial runner though.
- 1:21:53SPEAKER_03: I looked it up.
- 1:21:53SPEAKER_00: You wouldn't you couldn't miss it.
- 1:21:54SPEAKER_05: It was massive, man.
- 1:21:56SPEAKER_05: It was massive.
- 1:21:57SPEAKER_05: It was I swear it was six feet long.
- 1:21:59SPEAKER_03: Again, for sure.
- 1:22:00SPEAKER_05: Six feet compared to what we were you know looking at on the screen that you know would have been uh up to 20 20, 20 inches, 24 inch uh walleye.
- 1:22:10SPEAKER_05: Yeah, this thing was six feet.
- 1:22:12SPEAKER_05: And and it was like that big around.
- 1:22:14SPEAKER_05: It was massive, man.
- 1:22:16SPEAKER_03: One more thing I'll say about if you want to see some current footage of Wabagoon right now, Simon Baker, our our guide up there that we spent the day just driving around the boat with.
- 1:22:27SPEAKER_03: Now you're gonna have to write this down or type this in your, he's got a YouTube channel, but it's the most bizarre title I've ever seen in my life.
- 1:22:33SPEAKER_03: And he laughed when I said something.
- 1:22:37SPEAKER_03: So write this down or type this in your phone right now.
- 1:22:40SPEAKER_03: V-I-S-H-U-S-C-I-R-Q-U-E-L.
- 1:22:49SPEAKER_03: V-I-S-H-U-S-C-I-R-Q-U-E-L.
- 1:22:54SPEAKER_03: That's his YouTube channel.
- 1:22:55SPEAKER_03: That's V-S.
- 1:22:55SPEAKER_03: Viz Hus.
- 1:22:57SPEAKER_03: I said it sounds like Vicious Squirrel.
- 1:22:58SPEAKER_03: And he laughed.
- 1:22:59SPEAKER_03: He says, Yeah, I wish it was Vicious Squirrel.
- 1:23:01SPEAKER_03: But um, yeah, that but if you get that, it's he's got he does all kinds of little small content things.
- 1:23:06SPEAKER_03: He had a camera going that day we were there.
- 1:23:08SPEAKER_03: Remember, he was he was filming all this, so he's got lots of stuff.
- 1:23:10SPEAKER_03: That'll give you an idea of what goes on in Wabagoon and give you an idea what he's like.
- 1:23:13SPEAKER_03: He's a great guy.
- 1:23:14SPEAKER_05: So the funniest part about Simon is that uh he was told about our arrival a few weeks before the date.
- 1:23:22SPEAKER_05: And um, you know, as as happens in a lot of cases, people don't realize we're just regular folks, right?
- 1:23:30SPEAKER_05: They think for whatever television does that to people, it makes them bigger than life in some cases.
- 1:23:35SPEAKER_05: But he had been nervous the whole time, couldn't sleep the whole two-week period leading up to um our arrival.
- 1:23:44SPEAKER_05: And making matters worse, he was the local guide slash expert who was supposed to help us out by telling us you know, in three days you can't fish that lake and and learn it all, obviously.
- 1:23:57SPEAKER_05: So we need some intel.
- 1:23:58SPEAKER_05: We at least need uh some map chats where we can we can avoid uh uh uh dangerous areas where we shouldn't be treading because it's not worth busting up our princecraft boat and motor over.
- 1:24:11SPEAKER_05: Um, and but more importantly, we need to know because it's a hump fishery and the whole lake is nothing but massive humps everywhere, we need to know what humps are better than others, because not all humps are created equal, obviously.
- 1:24:25SPEAKER_05: And so that was what he was tasked with, but he was so damn nervous of us coming up and meeting us that he was just uh he was just a mess.
- 1:24:38SPEAKER_05: Three days before we got there, the fishery went from pretty good to a total disaster.
- 1:24:46SPEAKER_05: He could, as he put it, he couldn't get them to bite if he put a dozen minnows on a line and dropped it down there, they wouldn't bite.
- 1:24:53SPEAKER_05: And so this obviously got him really uh in a bad state because he's a local expert.
- 1:25:00SPEAKER_05: He's supposed to know, right?
- 1:25:01SPEAKER_05: He he walks on water and and on Wabagoon.
- 1:25:04SPEAKER_05: So it was kind of interesting seeing that because uh um, as it turned out, he kept saying once we started seeing them that first day we went out with them and we stopped on Humps and we actually saw fish, he'd say, There they see they're there, they're there, but they just won't bite, they haven't bitten for three days.
- 1:25:23SPEAKER_05: I can't get them to bite.
- 1:25:24SPEAKER_05: I don't know what's going on.
- 1:25:25SPEAKER_05: I feel so terrible.
- 1:25:26SPEAKER_05: Like it was funny, eh?
- 1:25:28SPEAKER_05: It was but uh great guy.
- 1:25:30SPEAKER_05: Um as it turned out, things kind of changed.
- 1:25:34SPEAKER_03: Um conditions we got one good day.
- 1:25:36SPEAKER_03: That last day weather wise, it just turned, right?
- 1:25:38SPEAKER_03: And one day Dean could finally throw a bait down there and control it.
- 1:25:42SPEAKER_03: Uh one day it was so hard.
- 1:25:43SPEAKER_05: And it was all about control, yeah, right?
- 1:25:45SPEAKER_05: Because up until then there was no such thing as boat control.
- 1:25:47SPEAKER_03: When the wind's howling like that, you got no you can anchor on anchor mode.
- 1:25:51SPEAKER_03: We have a crack in it, you can anchor, but you still have your bait, your line's got a curve in it, you're trying to throw as light a bait as you can, this, that, and the other.
- 1:25:58SPEAKER_03: It just gets it's tough.
- 1:25:59SPEAKER_05: But we also don't want to give you the impression that the episode was nothing but uh uh incredible fishing because, as Dean will tell you, he had to work his ass off.
- 1:26:09SPEAKER_00: Yeah, you won't see that.
- 1:26:10SPEAKER_00: No, you won't see that.
- 1:26:11SPEAKER_00: It'll look pretty smooth on that.
- 1:26:12SPEAKER_05: It'll look like, oh wow, look at that guy.
- 1:26:15SPEAKER_02: He he just went out there and he's the fish were jumping in the boat.
- 1:26:19SPEAKER_02: Our extended YouTube version.
- 1:26:20SPEAKER_02: We'll show the extended YouTube version.
- 1:26:23SPEAKER_03: That'll be perfect for that.
- 1:26:25SPEAKER_00: It was a pain.
- 1:26:26SPEAKER_00: Well, you guys watched it.
- 1:26:27SPEAKER_00: I mean, I'm the one experiencing it.
- 1:26:29SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I do wonder why.
- 1:26:30SPEAKER_03: I didn't see a lot, I was sleeping through most of the day.
- 1:26:33SPEAKER_03: I kept nudging you.
- 1:26:34SPEAKER_00: I kept nudging you.
- 1:26:34SPEAKER_00: There was a problem, so good in the morning, and then the pressure was a little bit off, but we still knew we needed more for a show.
- 1:26:42SPEAKER_00: And then there was about five or six hours of tough stuff, real tough.
- 1:26:48SPEAKER_00: And then finally it came in.
- 1:26:49SPEAKER_03: Here's one of those situations.
- 1:26:50SPEAKER_03: Dino got his first walleye of that last final day about I think it was eight in the morning or seven.
- 1:26:56SPEAKER_03: It was nice and early.
- 1:26:58SPEAKER_03: It was early, and then we were thinking that this that's not gonna happen until later.
- 1:27:01SPEAKER_03: Okay, and it was like a three and a half, four, close to four-pound walleye.
- 1:27:05SPEAKER_03: It was a beauty.
- 1:27:06SPEAKER_03: And uh, and okay, it's on, boys.
- 1:27:08SPEAKER_03: And then she just went downhill from there for a while, and then after that, it just he got onto the game finally, and then it's just matched him good.
- 1:27:16SPEAKER_05: Got on to the game.
- 1:27:18SPEAKER_05: Anyways, great episode.
- 1:27:19SPEAKER_05: Uh uh, you don't want to miss it for sure.
- 1:27:21SPEAKER_05: I don't know what it's gonna be titled, but I'm sure the the name Wababoo is.
- 1:27:26SPEAKER_03: How about on the goon at noon?
- 1:27:27SPEAKER_03: I think that's a perfect name for that.
- 1:27:29SPEAKER_05: Noon.
- 1:27:30SPEAKER_05: It's a perfect name for that show.
- 1:27:31SPEAKER_05: I love it.
- 1:27:32SPEAKER_05: Don't forget that.
- 1:27:33SPEAKER_05: That's great.
- 1:27:34SPEAKER_05: Anyways, uh, look it up.
- 1:27:35SPEAKER_05: You will uh definitely enjoy it, and more importantly, you'll learn a lot as we did on that shoot, uh, for sure.
- 1:27:43SPEAKER_02: Did we miss anything for Did we say where we were staying on that?
- 1:27:46SPEAKER_05: I don't think we did.
- 1:27:47SPEAKER_03: Wabagoon Lake Outfitters, just in case.
- 1:27:49SPEAKER_05: Formerly Indian Point Camp.
- 1:27:51SPEAKER_03: I remember at the first of the show, let me go quickly on that, why we haven't fished Wabagoon in this all this time.
- 1:27:56SPEAKER_03: Ange and I have been on the show, and uh, we were scheduled to fish Indian Point Camp, once which is this camp here, uh, years and years and years ago when Mr.
- 1:28:04SPEAKER_03: Grayson was in charge of uh good old Jimmy Grayson to Jimmy and uh and the owner of Indian Point Camp a week before our shoot said, guys, I've got cold feet.
- 1:28:16SPEAKER_03: I don't want to do this.
- 1:28:17SPEAKER_03: We're scheduled in the lineup, like we're going up to Northwest Ontario, and we didn't know what the hell to do.
- 1:28:23SPEAKER_03: So he dropped us, and that's why we never got on.
- 1:28:26SPEAKER_03: We finally got onto that lake, you know, knowing that was going to be a good fishery.
- 1:28:29SPEAKER_03: And then that happened to us.
- 1:28:30SPEAKER_03: So it took that much longer.
- 1:28:32SPEAKER_03: I think that was like 10 years ago.
- 1:28:33SPEAKER_05: And and uh Well, I think they got red red uh what do you call it?
- 1:28:37SPEAKER_05: Uh with with tourism, they got stroked off because of that cancellation.
- 1:28:42SPEAKER_03: Yeah, probably probably did, yeah.
- 1:28:44SPEAKER_03: And then uh the and then uh Francois took over and changed the name to Wabagoon Wabagoon Leg Outfitters, and now uh we highly recommend a great boat, smotors, trailers.
- 1:28:54SPEAKER_03: He doesn't need the trailer, he's got a boat launch right there if you want to bring your own boat up.
- 1:28:56SPEAKER_03: Beautiful little cabins, it's a great little place to stay for sure.
- 1:29:00SPEAKER_05: So and tons of fish.
- 1:29:02SPEAKER_05: Oh tons, yeah.
- 1:29:04SPEAKER_05: But but I would highly recommend if you're gonna go fish Wabagoon, it's one lake where you do need electronics.
- 1:29:13SPEAKER_03: Yep.
- 1:29:13SPEAKER_05: I think it's a must, both for safety purposes and because and fish location, yeah.
- 1:29:20SPEAKER_05: For sure.
- 1:29:21SPEAKER_05: So that are it, I think, boys.
- 1:29:24SPEAKER_05: Are we we done?
- 1:29:25SPEAKER_05: We we're we're eating up all kinds of that's a long one for an old gangster, very long one.
- 1:29:33SPEAKER_07: My ass is getting sore in this chair.
- 1:29:35SPEAKER_05: Uh do we need anything?
- 1:29:36SPEAKER_05: Do we need special?
- 1:29:40SPEAKER_05: You guys are gonna get us thrown off.
- 1:29:43SPEAKER_05: Bam.
- 1:29:44SPEAKER_05: They were banned.
- 1:29:46SPEAKER_05: Sorry, I lost my component.
- 1:29:48SPEAKER_05: I forgot myself for a moment.
- 1:29:49SPEAKER_05: Good God.
- 1:29:51SPEAKER_05: Um we're good.
- 1:29:52SPEAKER_00: No, record keeping is uh taken care of.
- 1:29:55SPEAKER_05: Everything with no special codes.
- 1:29:57SPEAKER_05: We swept the floors, we mopped.
- 1:29:59SPEAKER_05: No codes, no nothing.
- 1:30:01SPEAKER_05: Beautiful.
