Transcript
- 0:16Our number 2 welcome back Miller and Condon.
- 0:18Iowa Sports Radio Network Trent Condon, Ken Miller Momentarily
- 0:22our buddy David Kaplan's and cheering Stone of Iowa sponsors
- 0:25Cappy's weekly appearance. Mark Woodley will join us at the
- 0:29bottom of the hour. Trent will make some plays.
- 0:31Circus sports sponsor those. Hello, Capper.
- 0:34How are you buddy? I'm good, Sparky, how are you?
- 0:37Doing well. Well, you got some pub this week
- 0:39with the news that you broke that the Cubs management is
- 0:44aware of what it's going to take and apparently they are willing
- 0:46to write that check. I hope that they back that up
- 0:51with an actual contract. What do you think the chances
- 0:54are, Cap? Obviously Tucker's going to have
- 0:56a whole bunch of teams that are after his services.
- 1:00But the Cubs apparently realized with the price of poker and are
- 1:03willing to play. And that's what you heard and
- 1:06that's what you reported. Yeah, and you know, it's funny
- 1:10how people yesterday, Oh my God, are they close to the extent?
- 1:14No, they're not. I said a few people listened to
- 1:19the podcast that they have wrapped their brain around.
- 1:23That's the guy we need to extend and break the bank for and go
- 1:27maybe out of our comfort zone. 1/2 he's newly married January
- 1:33of 2024. They before they commit
- 1:36basically the rest of his career because it's going to be a long
- 1:39term deal. They want to know how does his
- 1:43wife like Chicago in the summer? How does the organization treat
- 1:47families, which is amazing among the best in the game.
- 1:51And people have asked her what does that mean treat the family.
- 1:54It's not like I go to work and then I leave and I go home and
- 1:58my life is my life. But let's just pick Kyle Tucker.
- 2:03He's playing and they're on the road at Pittsburgh, and he's
- 2:07fast asleep. And they got a game the next
- 2:09day. And his child at home with his
- 2:13wife is sick. I don't mean deathly sick.
- 2:16I mean got the flu. She's like, oh, God, what do I
- 2:18do? My child is 130.
- 2:20The Cubs have established Theo and Jed started this one.
- 2:23Theo came like there's a hotline.
- 2:25She calls, Hey, I'm having an issue.
- 2:28OK, Mrs. Tucker, we'll call you back in, you know, 5 minutes.
- 2:32Boom, team doctor calls or somebody on call.
- 2:35Here's what we need you to do. We'll meet you here.
- 2:38We'll do this. We'll do that.
- 2:39Or she says, hey, I want to be able to go do this, We'll take
- 2:44care of it. Boom, your reservation is set.
- 2:46Here's your car. So whatever it is, they make
- 2:50sure that the player can focus on his job, being a great
- 2:54baseball player and anything the family could need is taken care
- 2:59of. So, you know, that's the way
- 3:01they do business now in professional sports, especially
- 3:04for the superstars. And that's how the Cubs treat
- 3:06all their players. So he has to experience all of
- 3:10that. All I reported was they've
- 3:13wrapped their brain around it's going to cost us a lot of money
- 3:17and we better have a plan how we're getting this done.
- 3:19Well, it feels like they got a superstar in Emanaga, but he
- 3:22leaves last night with what they call leg cramps.
- 3:26Of course he's OK, No concern at all.
- 3:29None from Craig counsel after the game and then I watched the
- 3:33show to Imanaga translator interview for probably 20
- 3:37minutes and he said I've had this before, I'm fine.
- 3:41That's good because I think that's what they said about
- 3:42Steel when he came out of the game and obviously got worse as
- 3:45the week went on. But leg cramps a whole lot
- 3:47different than an arm, right? So that that's certainly good
- 3:50news, Cap. This team continues to hit the
- 3:52baseball out of ballparks. They continue to swipe bases.
- 3:56I just can't get over the fact that it's Bruhan and the double
- 4:01clutch against the Phillies, that it's Bertie, that it's
- 4:05Workman who's now a White Sox, and it could have been Bregman.
- 4:08It seems like it's it's an Achilles heel, the E5 waiting to
- 4:13happen at third base. I don't know what's out there
- 4:17Cap, but how don't don't they have to address that amongst
- 4:20other concerns? And I don't know if that's Matt
- 4:22Shaw figuring that out down here getting another chance.
- 4:26That's who it is. OK, but that's it, right?
- 4:29That's it. Matt Shaw will be back here and
- 4:32he's looked like he's changed his swing a bit.
- 4:35He still has the big leg kick. I don't know if that will stay
- 4:38or not but from what I've watched, and I'm no swing doctor
- 4:44but it looked like when he was here he took the front foot so
- 4:48his left foot and turned it like almost grotesquely in and now it
- 4:54looks like he's more a little more parallel at the plate.
- 4:59Saw him hit a Homer the other day.
- 5:00I saw a line drive single yesterday.
- 5:03Looks like he's swinging the bat better.
- 5:06He definitely is. And Tommy Birch, of course you
- 5:09know Tommy's name. I saw another name that was.
- 5:12Tommy Birch fan, I love that guy.
- 5:14Yeah, so we love him as well. Jonathan Long getting some reps
- 5:17over at third base. Have you talked to anybody in
- 5:20the organization? He's a first baseman by trade.
- 5:22Is this just, hey, let's see it in case it doesn't happen for
- 5:26Shaw, This is a backup plan here.
- 5:29I've just seen a little bit of Jonathan Long.
- 5:30Seems like a stretch. He could be an everyday third
- 5:33baseman even for 1/2 season at the Major League level.
- 5:37Yeah, I mean, I would be disingenuous to your audience if
- 5:40I told you I knew anything about him.
- 5:43I do not. I have no clue.
- 5:45And I wouldn't know him if he came up and punched me in the
- 5:48face. Might be seeing him before too
- 5:50long though. And if you're not seeing him,
- 5:52you'll be seeing Chris Flexen because I guess he's on his way,
- 5:54Cap and he. Has to be activated by tomorrow.
- 5:58Or he could opt out and ask to be a free agent.
- 6:01So. So what's the course?
- 6:02What would the corresponding move be?
- 6:04Would it be a birdie? Would it be a Bruhan?
- 6:06Those two make sense because you got to end with the 40 man,
- 6:09right? And I don't think he is.
- 6:10What do you think? What's the corresponding move
- 6:12when flexing comes up? And I don't know if that means
- 6:15he's going to start against Skeens on Thursday or are
- 6:18they'll save him for the weekend.
- 6:20But some's going to. Be on Thursday.
- 6:22OK. And he's been good.
- 6:23He's been good. He's been excellent, so that's
- 6:27why I feel like a game like tonight is a very important
- 6:30game. I know it's one of 162, but if
- 6:35you lose tonight, I mean, could you beat schemes, Sure.
- 6:40All great pitchers lose games. It's a tough task, especially in
- 6:44his building. He's really, really good.
- 6:46So I would think corresponding move, maybe Tom Cosgrove who
- 6:51threw 2 innings yesterday, I could see him going down so.
- 6:56Pitcher for. Pitcher, Pitcher for pitcher.
- 7:00And then I don't think they're ready to recall Matt Shaw just
- 7:03yet, but I do think sooner rather than later he'll be back
- 7:08at third base. Yet something up on the recap on
- 7:11YouTube about the Cubs being the best team in baseball, and it's
- 7:15not that big of a stretch it it really isn't for some of the
- 7:18things we've seen from the Dodgers, they're inconsistency.
- 7:21American League as a whole looks wide open.
- 7:23If this is not Homer radio here, Cappy, the Cubs, you can make a
- 7:27very compelling argument. This is the best team in all of
- 7:30baseball. Yeah, that was my partner Ryan
- 7:33Mcguffey, who came up with that storyline and it, you know, got
- 7:38his lunch hour show inflamed that you had the Sox fans,
- 7:42really, they're not the best team.
- 7:44You had other teams, fans who watch.
- 7:47They're not the best team in baseball.
- 7:49But what I would tell you is, you know, the Dodgers just put
- 7:53Tyler Glass now on the injured list with the shoulder.
- 7:57Shoulders are, you know, if you told me he tweaked A groin or
- 8:01something, he's out of a couple weeks, You're like, all right,
- 8:02we'll be OK. We'll just miss two or three or
- 8:05four starts shoulders after he's already had an elbow issue that
- 8:10required surgery. I mean, that is concerning.
- 8:13Blake Snell started throwing when they were here last week.
- 8:16He's on the injured list and he said no arm doesn't feel right.
- 8:21They had to shut him down in a throwing session.
- 8:24That's not good. They haven't used Clayton
- 8:27Kershaw and he's on the 60 day injured list.
- 8:29He's eligible to come off kind of late in May.
- 8:34So you're 3 weeks at least away from seeing him.
- 8:37And how many pitches does he have left in his arm?
- 8:40For all the money that they spent, they're definitely short
- 8:45of starting pitching. Like if I told you right now, I
- 8:48gave you a ticket, here you go. Here's $100 bet.
- 8:51You can bet any team to win the World Series.
- 8:53The Dodgers would not be my choice.
- 8:56It would not. Now will they go out and make
- 8:58trade? Yeah.
- 8:59But at some point you do run out of prospects to trade and you do
- 9:04run out of budget opportunities to go out and spend more money.
- 9:09And the other thing is we may have a work stoppage.
- 9:12I think we will after 20, 20. Six, Yeah.
- 9:16You can't have 22 guys on multi $1,000,000 long term deals.
- 9:22At some point you're going to have to move guys off because
- 9:25they're going to fight to get a salary cap in there.
- 9:28Well, here's this one. Backs up how good the Cubs are.
- 9:31I mean, Circa just put out their odds to for the team to win the
- 9:33most games in the month of May. Cubs are by far and away the
- 9:37favorite. They're 4 to one.
- 9:38The second shortest Price Dodgers are 8 1/2 to one cap.
- 9:43So that the Cubs are #1 in all of baseball.
- 9:46Well, this is to win more games in the month of May, so the
- 9:49month of May. Any American or national.
- 9:51Anybody. All 30 teams.
- 9:52Yes, the Cubs are 4 to 1, Dodgers plus 8:50, and then
- 9:56everybody's double digits are beyond.
- 9:58But the Cubs are an overwhelming favorite.
- 10:00The Cubs. That is an amazing stat.
- 10:02It is. Let me make sure I get this
- 10:04right. The Cubs to win the most games
- 10:07in the month of May are 4 to 1, the Dodgers are 8 to 1 and no
- 10:11one else in baseball is less than double digits.
- 10:14That's correct, I just DM Ed it to you so we followed each other
- 10:18on the Twitter. So there it goes.
- 10:20If you if you look at the Chicago Cubs schedule, and
- 10:25again, they have to face Schemes tomorrow, I don't know if it's
- 10:27the Pirate. Yeah, Paul Schemes is really
- 10:30good, but their schedule lightens up in terms of the
- 10:34team's records. Marlins.
- 10:37White Sox. Marlins again.
- 10:39That is a quite the 9 gamer there.
- 10:41You're thinking 8 white. Sox for three.
- 10:44The the 2 Marlins, 1 White Sox in there and then the reason at
- 10:48the end of the month. Yeah, it's a possibility.
- 10:51Is available in the state of Illinois, as you well know,
- 10:54Cappy, so maybe that might. Be and I'll be actually in a car
- 10:58tomorrow, winging my way down I-65 to a little town known as
- 11:03Louisville, KY for the. Week are you going?
- 11:07I'm going to the Derby for the first time ever.
- 11:09Oh, Cappy, you have no idea what you're about to experience.
- 11:11It's such an experience. It truly is.
- 11:14Where are you sitting? Bucket list item for my brother
- 11:17and I. He retired in December and his
- 11:20wife live in Florida. They're flying in tomorrow.
- 11:23My wife and I are driving down and it's going to just be epic.
- 11:263 days of fun and frivolity. We are sitting right at the
- 11:31starting gate. Nice.
- 11:33A wave to the top of the stretch.
- 11:34That's good. And you played, played a
- 11:36handsome price for that. Where are you staying?
- 11:38Do you know? Yeah, we're staying in, actually
- 11:41in Lexington because I called the associate athletic director
- 11:47formerly now he's the AD at DePaul.
- 11:49Dwayne TV was at Kentucky forever and so I called him.
- 11:54He's my buddy. I said, let me ask you a
- 11:55question, where should I stay? He said do not stay in
- 11:59Louisville. It's a blank show down there.
- 12:02He said stay in Lexington. It's about 4550 minutes and he
- 12:07said stay there you will pay 1/4 of the price.
- 12:11We literally booked this last August and we went online.
- 12:15The Hampton Inn in Louisville was $1700 a night.
- 12:18Crazy. And now we found a hotel, a nice
- 12:22hotel in Lexington for $300.00 a night.
- 12:27Hampton Inn is the closest, one of the closest I've stayed
- 12:29there. I mean, you stay there until
- 12:31that room until Wednesday's like $149 starting Thursday 1700, and
- 12:36you have to buy, you have to book it Thursday, Friday and
- 12:39Saturday. Who's your horse, Cap?
- 12:42It's journalism, it's a monster, and long as it got the post
- 12:45position that it got now look, it's the 20 horse field.
- 12:50Could you get caught up in a bad, you know, pack of horses
- 12:53and lose? Of course you could Sandman
- 12:58journalism. There's sovereignty.
- 13:01There's a handful. I'm actually going to interview
- 13:04Eddie Olshek today who's party at the Derby working for NBC,
- 13:09and I will have on my YouTube channel probably up by tomorrow,
- 13:14an interview with Eddie and then stuff I get from another
- 13:19handicapper who's a horse owner who I am going to be
- 13:22interviewing later today. So we'll have our picks up and
- 13:26people can share it with their family and friends.
- 13:28It's all free at Recap REKAP on YouTube and it'll be up there
- 13:32and help you with the day and it will also have a Kentucky Oaks
- 13:35pick too. That's good.
- 13:36Well, journalist, my fear about journalism is he's just facing 5
- 13:39horse fields in California and San Anita.
- 13:41But we'll see. He's talented.
- 13:44He's a talented colt, no doubt. All right, we got to go.
- 13:46We got to recap the draft with you, Cap, just to get your
- 13:49thoughts on. I loved it.
- 13:50I think the Bears killed it. Obviously, you know, will they
- 13:54hit round picks, you know, from a pick or two between rounds
- 13:58four and seven that always makes or breaks draft.
- 14:01But boy, I think they got their first 2.
- 14:03They headed out of the park with both of their first two picks.
- 14:06Cap What's the kind of consensus in Chicago about the Bears
- 14:09draft? Yeah, I like what they did.
- 14:12You know, Ben Johnson wanted Colston Loveland and then when I
- 14:17see Ian Rappaport say all the phone calls were about getting
- 14:21up to get one player, Colston Loveland.
- 14:24And when Chicago took him, the phones all stopped until a trade
- 14:28at pick 25. I think he said that was the guy
- 14:32that everybody targeted. And then college friend of mine
- 14:36who still scouts in the league, he said he always rips the Bears
- 14:39to me. He's never work for them.
- 14:40He's not a Bears fan. He's from Minnesota.
- 14:43Every year ago, yeah, nice pick that.
- 14:45I wouldn't have done that. And he called me the other
- 14:48night. He's like, wow, good luck.
- 14:52Your boys got it right. That kids a stud and he really
- 14:55likes Luther Burden and he likes the kids.
- 14:57Tamar Turner from Texas A&M. So we'll see if Ozzy Trupello is
- 15:03a factor on the offensive line at 68315.
- 15:07That is a monstrous addition if he can play.
- 15:11Love what they did. So this is a team playoff team
- 15:15now as we finish up the draft is that were the expectation
- 15:19baseline should be for Bears fans?
- 15:21It absolutely should. It should be a 910 wins football
- 15:25team. I mean, I understand it's
- 15:27everything's new. They've got new coaches, new
- 15:29systems, everything. There is enough talent there
- 15:32that if they don't win 9 or 10 games, I think it's a big time
- 15:37failure. And then Johnson agrees because
- 15:39he said we didn't come here to rebuild, we came here to win
- 15:43now. So let's hope it's right.
- 15:46David Kaplan Kapur and Joy Louisville are Lexington and
- 15:49Louisville. It's going to be a wonderful
- 15:50weekend for you and your wife and your friends.
- 15:53It's really is something. If you're a sports fan, you
- 15:55should try and experience it at least once because.
- 15:58It is amazing items man, life's too short.
- 16:01Yep, enjoyed buddy, can't wait to hear about it.
- 16:03Good luck with your bets and we'll be when's.
- 16:06I'll check your recap channel, going to tomorrow you.
- 16:09Think him this afternoon. We'll have something up by
- 16:12probably late tonight or in the morning.
- 16:14Good stuff, I'll retweet it out. And I just sent you the DMG the
- 16:18circa odds for the month of May. So it's in your y'all good to
- 16:22talk to you Kapra. Thank you.

- 17:08bucket list. Still on yours it will be.
- 17:13Spring's tough, right? Now, no, I get it.
- 17:14Spring's tough. Probably be away.
- 17:16Bill, yeah, we're that one's probably going to be a little
- 17:18bit further down. We talked a little bit earlier
- 17:21about the ridiculousness with Bill Belichick and Jordan
- 17:24Hudson. Yes.
- 17:27Well, then offshore company has put some odds to it.
- 17:30Bet Online has put out these. The question we asked, will Bill
- 17:34Belichick be coaching UNC in 2026?
- 17:37Yes -500 No 3 to one. Will they break up in 2025?
- 17:44So you got what, May, June, July, August.
- 17:46OK, 2 to one on the yes, but they don't make it to 2026.
- 17:50I don't think I I it can't last much longer.
- 17:53What will Hudson's next Instagram photo feature?
- 17:56Belichick and cut off sleeves, plus 150.
- 17:59Belcheck in a suit, 2 to 1. Hudson's Naples shown plus 250.
- 18:04I had a Belichick with a RIP and his shirt.
- 18:06That's 5:00 to 1:00, but this one might have been my favorite
- 18:09of all of them. What will Bill Belichick do
- 18:12next? The betting favorite?
- 18:14Get a tattoo at Plus 180. Oh no.
- 18:16Dye his hair blonde. Get an earring.
- 18:19Five to two mullet hairstyle. That's plus 350.
- 18:23Well, his kids got that. Pierce's Ear 5 to 1.
- 18:26OK, now you're talking. Pierce's nose 6 to 1.
- 18:30Wouldn't that be something? What is North Carolina thinking?
- 18:32Get a man bun plus 650. What, what, what can the the
- 18:38president, whatever they have Provo, whoever's in charge in
- 18:41North Carolina, what are they thinking when they see this?
- 18:43What's going through their? Heads, well, I mean, they're all
- 18:46in. We've all seen, I think an
- 18:49element or somebody, an acquaintance, a younger person
- 18:54leads them astray. I think that's where we're
- 18:57trending here. Now, what you hope is it's not
- 19:00elder abuse, that there isn't other things going on, right?
- 19:03And that lurks in the back of your mind, too.
- 19:06And that thing's a lot more nefarious than just young
- 19:08girlfriend. There's more going on to the
- 19:11story. That's where you hope that this
- 19:12is not. We will talk to Mark Woodley
- 19:16coming up KWWLTV, where he's the sports director there, but we're
- 19:20going to pick his brain on what he experienced last weekend and
- 19:23has had multiple weekends for experience in this.
- 19:25He's a big football fan. I'm sure he likes our game, but
- 19:29I know he likes the game played over in the UK Will,
- 19:32specifically Wrexham, we'll talk about that.
- 19:35I want to learn more about it because they are a passionate
- 19:37group, those people, no doubt about that.
- 19:39Mark Woodley will join us next. Miller and Condon are on the eye
- 19:42with Sports Radio Network. Hi, Millory Condon, welcome
- 19:48back. I was Sports Radio Network with
- 19:51you until 2. Trent's plays of the day still
- 19:54to come. Circus sports sponsor those.
- 19:56We'll get to those here about 10 minutes before the top of the
- 19:59hour. Well, been following this story
- 20:01on Twitter. Took a liking to it.
- 20:02Rexum's my squad. Oh, yeah, man, I'm all in.
- 20:05Wow, I didn't know we were going there.
- 20:07Oh, I mean, you got a new team. I go all in, Rexum.
- 20:10Now they're watching play soccer.
- 20:12Well, if it if it works out. Yeah, but they keep moving up, I
- 20:16guess. And now, Mark, good to talk to
- 20:18you. I appreciate you coming on.
- 20:20I really do. I mean, I've known you've seen
- 20:23you on Twitter a bunch, but then when you went viral when you
- 20:26were doing the weather report during the Blizzard, I mean, I.
- 20:31Don't know what you're talking about.
- 20:32Yeah, I never hear about that. Yeah, right.
- 20:34And I mean that just that was all over the place.
- 20:37That was really, really cool. But then you know, you, I, I see
- 20:41on the Twitter and I'm following you and you're showing up over
- 20:44across the pond. And this isn't the first time
- 20:47that you've been there. So tell us, how did you become
- 20:49of all teams, a Wrexham fan team based in, by my understanding in
- 20:54Wales that was formed in the 1860s.
- 20:57What's behind this? And it looks like it's an
- 20:59absolute blast. It is an absolute blast.
- 21:02I haven't been a fan since 1860, but yeah, the team's been around
- 21:06since then. But no, I so 27 years ago I was
- 21:09a a student at Central College Impella.
- 21:11We have a great international program and I spent six months
- 21:14in Wales. Best times of my life.
- 21:16Wales is a beautiful country. I love the people and I hadn't
- 21:20been back there for a while. And then, you know, I think a
- 21:24decent number of people know this and some of your listeners
- 21:26probably don't that Ryan Reynolds and Rob Mcaleny from
- 21:31it. It's Always Sunny in
- 21:32Philadelphia bought Rexham AFC in Rexham, Wales about five
- 21:37years ago and they produced the documentary Welcome to Wrexham
- 21:42and I was on board. I was hooked right away just
- 21:44because of, you know, my past and wailed when watching this
- 21:47documentary. Just everything took me back to
- 21:491998 and what a beautiful time that was and like, I have to go
- 21:53I have to go, you know, watch this team.
- 21:56So the first game I went to myself and Jim Nelson, who was a
- 22:00great sports writer for the water, Like we're going to go.
- 22:04So we go to Wrexham to a game in February 2 years ago there in
- 22:08the National League. They're in the 5th tier, you
- 22:11know, just wallowing way down there in in the English Football
- 22:15League. And you know, we went over there
- 22:18and the town was buzzing. I mean, this town revolves
- 22:22around that soccer team against Rexam AFC.
- 22:25They won two to nothing that night.
- 22:27Both of us did stories on our visits over there.
- 22:29We just had an absolute blast. But again, it goes back to my
- 22:32days in Pella 27 years ago and then five years ago it led to
- 22:36this. How does a kid from Dyke New
- 22:39Hartford that goes to college at Pella?
- 22:41How do you become a soccer fan? I don't know.
- 22:45That is an amazing question. I don't know.
- 22:48I've just kind of always been intrigued by the sport.
- 22:50Never played it. I don't think I could play it.
- 22:53But something I don't know, something has always just kind
- 22:55of clicked with me on that. It's fascinating.
- 22:58It is. So what, what are the crowds
- 23:00like? Because we've seen horror
- 23:01stories right about some of the they take it pretty seriously as
- 23:05you well know what, what, what, what's in a a game day Like what
- 23:10for the home team or for the visiting team?
- 23:12Obviously I'm guessing two different experiences, but
- 23:15what's game day like? Yeah, 2 very different
- 23:19experiences home and away. Some people may not know this,
- 23:24but it's not like going to an NFL game or anything like that.
- 23:27The fans don't sit together. You can't just buy tickets, you
- 23:31know, with the Wrexham fans or you know, with the other team,
- 23:34the Blackpool fans who whatever is, they're playing Charlton
- 23:37Athletic the other day. You have to buy tickets in your
- 23:40section. If you don't buy them in your
- 23:43section and people find out, they will remove you from the
- 23:46stadium. That's that's a thing and it is
- 23:49because they've had problems. We have problems.
- 23:50We just ignore it. They have problems.
- 23:52They segregate all the fans and you know the whole town, it's
- 23:57just buzzing from the second you wake up in the morning, you
- 24:00know, you end up at the pubs in town, they're all packed all day
- 24:04long. It's a little bit more of, it
- 24:05feels like a college football experience than it does a Pro
- 24:08Football experience. You know, you've got tailgating.
- 24:11Everybody is everywhere around town.
- 24:13It's really neat. And then, you know, they got
- 24:16promoted, which I'm sure we'll get to in a second on on
- 24:19Saturday, and that was just next level.
- 24:22I've never seen anything like it.
- 24:24So I was also, it was a year later in 1999, I was in Naples,
- 24:29Italy, and it was the day that they clinched and moved up from
- 24:33them. I think up to it was Series B
- 24:35and now they're in the top level of the Napoli team.
- 24:38And it was indescribable. I mean, we've seen big moments,
- 24:41Mark, you've been around the block a few times.
- 24:43You've seen some big wins for Iowa and Iowa State and a lot of
- 24:45other places during your career. It is different the way that the
- 24:49city is just engulfed in a way. I guess it's is it like it's a
- 24:53championship? Like we think see the stories of
- 24:55like Philadelphia when they won the Super Bowl and kind of
- 24:58people pouring into the streets. Is that what it's like?
- 25:00They're just kind of a different kind of scale.
- 25:02Yeah, I, I was kind of expected to see, you know, overturned
- 25:06cars and fire that that that didn't quite happening downtown
- 25:11after the game. It was just packed.
- 25:13And this was history. What happened on Saturday?
- 25:16Because I talked about going there a couple years ago.
- 25:18They were in the 5th tier. They're moving up to the
- 25:20championship. They're starting to play with
- 25:22the big boys. This is the second tier.
- 25:24This is history. No, no team in senior men's
- 25:28football in the top five divisions in English Football
- 25:31League history. And we're talking about a long
- 25:33history. No team has ever gotten promoted
- 25:36in back-to-back to back seasons. And that is what happened on
- 25:40Saturday. They were in the 5th tier when I
- 25:43was there two years ago. They are going to be in the
- 25:45second tier after this next year.
- 25:47You know they're going to be playing against the big boys,
- 25:49some of the big boys in the Championship right now.
- 25:51Leicester City. Leicester City won the Premier
- 25:54League like 6 years ago. They're in the Championship now,
- 25:58yeah. So I mean, there are some big
- 26:00teams and they're also getting promoted along with Birmingham
- 26:03City. That's the team that Tom Brady
- 26:05owns. So I don't know how some of the
- 26:07other teams feel about American owners, but I can tell you that
- 26:10the people of Rexham, the people of Birmingham are pretty, are
- 26:12pretty excited about us right now, yeah.
- 26:14I think Ryan Reills a Canadian though, isn't he?
- 26:16I think he is fine. Canadian lad is what he and he
- 26:19bought him for 2 million and I saw this on on on X.
- 26:23Apparently the club is now valued three seasons later at
- 26:27100 million. The estimates are somewhere
- 26:31between 100 and 150 million for the value of this club.
- 26:34And you're right, two and a half million just four years ago.
- 26:38It's insane what they've done. And the best part about this,
- 26:42you know, seeing the team when seeing them promoted was great,
- 26:47but seeing what it means to the people of these communities, I
- 26:51mean, this team got stuck in the 5th division for 15 years.
- 26:55They didn't move up. They didn't get down, go down.
- 26:58They were in the National League, stuck in that 5th tier.
- 27:01The town was kind of economically depressed.
- 27:03They almost lost the team in the last 20 years due to a soulless
- 27:07owner who wanted to sell the stadium.
- 27:09And in fact, the town formed a trust and bought the team from
- 27:13this guy. The town saved the team from
- 27:15this guy. But the town doesn't have a lot
- 27:17of money, so they weren't putting money into players.
- 27:20They were just kind of languishing in that 5th tier
- 27:23until Rob and Ryan showed up four years ago.
- 27:25And they had to have a big town vote.
- 27:27You know, everybody who was part of the trust had to vote and 98%
- 27:32of the vote I believe, which said OK, yeah, let's sell these
- 27:35guys. And it is been amazing.
- 27:37I mean what it's done economically for the town, just
- 27:40there's money pouring into the town.
- 27:41You've seen what did the value of the team and all these people
- 27:45who've watched this team, you know, for 4050, sixty years of
- 27:50their lives. You know, there are a couple of
- 27:52guys I met at the Turf pub, which is the famous pub from the
- 27:55documentary named Alan Trev of their brothers.
- 27:58They're about 80 years old and just hearing them talk about the
- 28:01stories and just smiling when they think about little old
- 28:05Rexum in the championship. The Rexum is honestly, it's
- 28:08about the size of Cedar Falls, not Waterloo and Cedar Falls
- 28:10together, just Cedar Falls and they're in the second tier
- 28:14playing against some of these big boys.
- 28:16It's it's insane. The stadium only holds 13,000
- 28:19people. And it's banged out.
- 28:21Seeing you inside of there and yeah, that jumped off.
- 28:24So I mean, in American sports sense, if we had relegation, if
- 28:28we had promotion, would this be like the, I don't know, the
- 28:31Clinton Lumber Kings suddenly and being in AAA and being being
- 28:35a season away from maybe moving up to Major League Baseball, is,
- 28:38is that a fairway to kind of equate this?
- 28:40Right. Think about the New York Yankees
- 28:42having to play baseball in Clinton, you know, if they
- 28:44happen to move up to that first tier next year.
- 28:46Yeah, exactly. It's basically the exact same
- 28:49thing. Yeah.
- 28:50I mean, I love the idea of relegation.
- 28:52Obviously in our pro sports, you know, there's so much money
- 28:56involved and the owner is, you know, of the NFL are never going
- 28:59to go for something like this. It's something we're never going
- 29:01to experience. Now, I've heard like the USL in
- 29:04soccer, in the USL 2 are considering something like this,
- 29:07which I think it'd be great. It actually might help them
- 29:10compete with the MLS or maybe even merge with them some point.
- 29:12But other than that, I think it's something we're never going
- 29:15to see. So you've got two teams near the
- 29:17bottom playing against each other.
- 29:19Nobody really cares, but you know, you've got two teams near
- 29:22the bottom playing each other over there.
- 29:24That's a big deal because you know you don't want to go down.
- 29:28Have has the committee, I mean people you have met, I guess, I
- 29:32mean, they're in pretty good mood with what they did this
- 29:34past week, but do you have friends over there now that are
- 29:37following this team that you guys will commiserate back and
- 29:39forth on game days? We certainly do.
- 29:43And when, you know, when we first did the stories and when
- 29:46we went over the first time, we talked to some people, some
- 29:48people on the documentary, some people not.
- 29:51You know, we're all Facebook friends now.
- 29:53I mean, I went over there, a buddy of mine who is, you know,
- 29:57in the Army or formerly in the Army, went out on Friday night.
- 30:01We had a great time, maybe too great of a time before getting
- 30:05to Saturday. Had heard a little bit Saturday
- 30:07morning, but but honestly, it was a blessing in disguise
- 30:11because, you know, kind of went a little bit slower on Saturday
- 30:13and I remember everything like, you know, crystal clear and what
- 30:17what a day it was, you know, rushing the field afterwards and
- 30:21the way the game went. Here's the way the whole day
- 30:23went. So two things had to happen for
- 30:25them to be promoted on Saturday. A-Team called Wickham had to
- 30:29either draw or lose and they played earlier in the day, which
- 30:32helped out a lot. So we knew, and once Wickham
- 30:35lost 2 nothing in their game, the town, the buzz changed in
- 30:40that town, everybody knew. It was like, oh, OK, just take
- 30:42the win tonight. They score about 20 minutes in,
- 30:46score a second one a minute and a half later.
- 30:47So it was 2 nothing in half and everybody's feeling good.
- 30:50The buzz is up, but you know, it's still 2 nothing that can be
- 30:52overcome. And then with about 15 minutes
- 30:55left to go, they knocked in the 3rd and everybody knew it was
- 30:57over. And the last 15 minutes, that
- 30:59game was wild. Do they sell beer in the
- 31:02stadium? Got it right.
- 31:04Yes, but here's the thing. So soccer games in England,
- 31:10Wales and the United Kingdom you are not too You're not allowed
- 31:15to consume a beer from anywhere in the stadium where you can
- 31:18actually see the field. You.
- 31:20Buy a beer. It has to be, you know, under
- 31:22the stands. You have to finish it and come
- 31:24out. In fact, in fact, CC Day, you
- 31:28know who's on. It's always Philadelphia with
- 31:31Rob Mcaleny. He was at a game last year and
- 31:34it was kind of scandalous because he was up in the owner's
- 31:36box and he got spotted drinking a beer, which even in the
- 31:40owner's box you cannot do. In fact, somebody I know who was
- 31:43part of it, who works for the team, told me that inside the
- 31:46owner's box indoors, there is a line.
- 31:50And that line designates from where you're, you know, not able
- 31:54to see the field to where you are.
- 31:55You have to be standing behind that line in order to drink a
- 31:59beer. CC Day was spotted, and it was,
- 32:02it was kind of scandalous. Now, nothing came of it, But
- 32:04still at the same time, like, yeah, oh, Yanks come over here.
- 32:07Apparently they can break the rules, right?
- 32:09No, absolutely. And especially if you're
- 32:10Hollywood star like Charlie Day, one of the funniest guys of our
- 32:12generation. Charlie Day, I do too.
- 32:15One last thing for you. For me, are you going again, I
- 32:18mean next year or is it already in the plans that you got to
- 32:21make another a trip and and a second part to that, are tickets
- 32:24expensive? No, incredibly cheap.
- 32:27Now they're definitely going to go up in the second tier, but no
- 32:31tickets about $25. And yeah, I'm guessing and they
- 32:36won't jump that major way. We think next year somewhere
- 32:394045. So they might double, which for
- 32:41them it's probably good price. And that that is one of the
- 32:45unfortunate things. You know, you've got these long
- 32:47time season ticket holders there that can afford these tickets
- 32:50and it's probably going to price some people out of it and it's
- 32:53kind of the price you pay for going up.
- 32:54But no, as far as going back next year, I wasn't going to
- 32:58until, you know, our good friend Mark Frey who just left his job.
- 33:03UHO, I was talking to him, he asked me like, you going next
- 33:06year? I'm like, no, I, I think I'm
- 33:08going to take a year off And Mark's like really, Cuz I really
- 33:11want to go. And I was like, all right, Mark,
- 33:16here's the deal. If you go, I will go next year.
- 33:19So we're planning a trip to go next year.
- 33:20Absolutely going back. That's awesome.
- 33:23Thanks for doing this for us. I've been, like I said, I was
- 33:25into it vicariously following you over the weekend.
- 33:28Just the experience that you had.
- 33:30Such a cool story and wanted to share it with our audience.
- 33:33Mark, thanks for jumping on brother.
- 33:35Appreciate it. Absolutely.
- 33:36We'll do it. Again, documentary then you
- 33:38really will be. Yes, yeah.
- 33:39You know what? Where can I find it?
- 33:42It is on Hulu and Disney Plus I believe.
- 33:44Good stuff. Got them both.
- 33:46We'll take your time out. Thanks, Mark.
- 33:47We'll talk down the road, buddy. Thanks, Ed.
- 33:49Yep. Good to talk to you.
- 33:50Mark Woodley, KWWL. That's pretty cool story.
- 33:53Yes, it is. The whole town coming together.
- 33:55What else do they have? There's no baseball.
- 33:58No. Play hockey over there.
- 34:00This is it. Do they play cricket?
- 34:01Maybe. Probably.
- 34:03But this got to be. Different level.
- 34:05Different level, Yes. It's gig football, just a
- 34:08different kind of football. And moving up the ladder that
- 34:10the way that they have, $2,000,000 is now worth over
- 34:13between somewhere between 100 and $150 million.
- 34:16The rich get richer. Good for them.
- 34:18Take a time out. 14145 a trench plays of the day or next.
- 34:22Miller and Condon on the Iowa Sports Radio Network.
- 34:31Miller and Condon, our final segment here on a Wednesday.
- 34:35Thanks to Mark Woodley, David Kaplan, John Bowen Camp for
- 34:38joining us early in the program. Tomorrow, Dick Geron, who's
- 34:41covered decades of Kentucky derbies, will give us his
- 34:45thoughts. Joe O'Donnell, the voice of the
- 34:47Minnesota Wild. Radio voice of the Minnesota
- 34:50Wild and Game 6 tomorrow night in Saint Paul at the Excel
- 34:55Energy Center, at least for the time being, about to change
- 34:57names, but he'll join us, as will Bill Seals from Rivals.
- 35:01Now on three so Iowa State. Gets I I don't think Rivals is
- 35:05going away though. No, but they're combining.
- 35:08They're merging, but Iowa State will get a on three.
- 35:16Or do the Bill Seals wear two half?
- 35:17Well, we'll ask him tomorrow. We'll find out tomorrow.
- 35:20Yeah. So.
- 35:20So that's true. Rivals is not going to go away.
- 35:23As of now. As of now, yes.
- 35:27Well, we'll see how it works out in the end.
- 35:28But there's a big story today. The guy Terry Shannon, who
- 35:32founded Rivals and then sold it to Yahoo, then he founded 24/7
- 35:37Sports and sold that, and then he found it on Three and
- 35:43reacquired Rivals. And they'll sell that.
- 35:45And he'll does he not the companies that he's selling to,
- 35:49do they not put non compete clauses in these?
- 35:51Agreements they do. I remember back when 24/7 was
- 35:55kind of launching. Or was was it Scout?
- 35:57Scout. Yes, it was Trent, you're right.
- 35:58Yep. That there was something there
- 36:01and it took longer to get off the ground than he wanted, but
- 36:03eventually. His non compete was over and he
- 36:05got to. And in today's environment, non
- 36:07competes I. Don't think there is anything
- 36:08such thing you put. Them in there, but they're not
- 36:10worth very much, right? Certainly in our state, yeah.
- 36:13And I think a lot of states are that way.
- 36:17Fascinating. All right, let's make some plays
- 36:19of the day. One quick note.
- 36:20Yes, Sam Anderson, longtime Urbandale.
- 36:23Football. Yeah.
- 36:23What's going? On now it's his retirement.
- 36:25Did he? Yes.
- 36:26So he was a long time. Yes, absolutely.
- 36:29It's always he done or is he going to coach one more year?
- 36:3135 years, the last 21 as head coach, he informed the team
- 36:35Tuesday. So see him as decided retire.
- 36:38So yeah, that was his final season last year.
- 36:40Who? Had man on the sidelines.
- 36:42Well, maybe they'll go to an alum.
- 36:44You know the kid coming in next, Mr. Lucas Strain.
- 36:46He's an Urbandale alum. Yeah.
- 36:48He's a baseball dude. He played football, too.
- 36:50Did he play football? Absolutely.
- 36:52Yeah, it looks like an athlete I'm.
- 36:53Sure, state champion baseball player was not that on the
- 36:56football field. No, no.
- 36:58They had a pretty good receiver at one point in that program
- 37:00too. I I.
- 37:01And they might have a pretty good middle linebacker playing
- 37:03dude with the guys this year, Jaden Hare.
- 37:05Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. You've been telling me about him
- 37:07for a while, boy. First time myself.
- 37:08What about your other brother Brevin doll?
- 37:10Is he hurt 'cause they can't see much about it?
- 37:12Hamstring injury kept him out. Also his battling illness
- 37:15throughout the spring and he is chomping at the bit.
- 37:18I bet he did it out there. And then when you see a freshman
- 37:20also show up in McNeil and look pretty good, OK, it gets a
- 37:24little nervous, doesn't it? Yeah, Boy, oh boy.
- 37:26I am. It's a cut throat world.
- 37:28I was offense. I'm mildly excited about this.
- 37:32I am too. Yeah.
- 37:33I bet you should be associated all fans of the black goal.
- 37:36After the season concluded, we're talking about what the
- 37:39total should be. The schedule is tough.
- 37:41Yeah. Could it be a year that it's
- 37:43actually not going to be 7 1/2? Well, it came out in 7 1/2.
- 37:47However, there was no way in the world I was betting the over
- 37:51with the schedule. That they had.
- 37:52I thought they were. Let's cross your fingers.
- 37:54Hope they get to 6 I. Have to make a bet.
- 37:55Make a bet right now. I bet in the over.
- 37:58Yeah, just the way the offense I I agree with you.
- 38:00No, it might be 8 and 4, sure. I don't think this is still a 10
- 38:03and two team with the schedule that they have.
- 38:05I don't think so either, but I but I it's more optimistic than
- 38:08I think it was at the end of last year.
- 38:10That's how I see. It right there with you.
- 38:13What? Who are you playing today?
- 38:14What sports are you playing today?
- 38:16So I did something tough yesterday.
- 38:17I had a winning record, what, 4:00 and 3:00?
- 38:19Still lost money down .2 units because we had a couple of big
- 38:22favorites in baseball that came home.
- 38:24The sports books have finally caught up.
- 38:28They're not allowing those -1 eighties -1 nineties on the
- 38:30Braves against the Rockies anymore because today they are a
- 38:34-, 290 choice. So we're not going to be playing
- 38:36that one. Just Chris Sale though too.
- 38:38It is Chris Sale 1 baseball game.
- 38:40I am going to play the Yankees against the Orioles.
- 38:44Povich A lefty. They mash against lefty.
- 38:47Simple as that. Grass go on the other side.
- 38:49I'll lay the -1 O2 What in hockey lightning extend this
- 38:54series do they -110 on that front and I'm going back to the
- 38:58well again, those first quarter bets, Rockets first quarter,
- 39:02Lakers first quarter will play both of those for my final 2
- 39:06picks. All right, good stuff out of
- 39:07Trent Condon there. Those are his plays of the day,
- 39:10Circus sports sponsors. Well, coming up next is the
- 39:13drive with Heather and Lucas Miller and Condon, noon to two
- 39:16on the Iowa Sports Radio now. Well, one more thing.
- 39:20Go, jets, go.
