- 0:38people of loss. And if that's you, friend, I am
- 0:42sorry. And I hope that today you can
- 0:44find some peace. And we will at the beginning of
- 0:48this day, or the middle, or the end, wherever it is for you.
- 0:51We will rest in the God that brings us peace, who brings us
- 0:55love. And we will listen to a romantic
- 0:59story about David destroying the Amalekites.
- 1:03No, not much romance here, I'm afraid.
- 1:06Yeah, No, thank you, Old Testament.
- 1:07Thank you, First Samuel. This is another one of those
- 1:10warring chapters. But we draw closer to the end as
- 1:14we see God setting up this character of David.
- 1:19No, not a perfect character. But in this journey, we see him
- 1:24setting up what he wants us to know about him as king.
- 1:29So all that's left is for us to read it and tease out the
- 1:32mysteries therein. So, friends, join me.
- 1:35Let us read together. First Samuel, chapter 30.
- 1:50Three days later, when David and his men arrived home at their
- 1:54town of Ziklag, they found that the Amalekites had made a raid
- 1:58into the Negev and Ziklag. They had crushed Ziklag and
- 2:03burned it to the ground. They had carried off the women
- 2:06and children and everyone else, but without killing anyone.
- 2:10When David and his men saw the ruins and realised what had
- 2:13happened to their families, they wept until they could weep no
- 2:17more. David's two wives, a high noon
- 2:21from Jezreel, and Abigail, the widow of Nabel from Carmel, were
- 2:26among those captured. David was now in great danger
- 2:30because all his men were very bitter about losing their sons
- 2:34and daughters, and they began to talk of stoning him.
- 2:38But David found strength in the Lord his God.
- 2:41Then he said to Abiathar the priest.
- 2:44Bring me the Ephod, Sir Abiathar brought it.
- 2:48Then David asked the Lord, should I chase after this band
- 2:52of Raiders? Will I catch them?
- 2:55And the Lord told him, yes, go after them.
- 2:59You will surely recover everything that was taken from
- 3:02you. So David and his 600 men set out
- 3:06and they came to the Brook Besar.
- 3:09But 200 of the men were too exhausted to cross the brook, so
- 3:12David continued the pursuit with 400 men.
- 3:16Along the way. They found an Egyptian man in a
- 3:18field and brought him to David. They gave him some bread to eat
- 3:22and bought it to drink. They also gave him part of a fig
- 3:25cake and two clusters of raisins, for he hadn't had
- 3:29anything to eat or drink for three days and nights.
- 3:33Before long his strength returned.
- 3:35To whom do you belong and where do you come from?
- 3:39David asked him. I am an Egyptian, the slave of
- 3:44an Amalekite, he replied. My master abandoned me three
- 3:48days ago because I was sick. We were on our way back from
- 3:52raiding the Karratha sites in the Negev, the territory of
- 3:55Judah and the land of Caleb, and we just burned Ziklag.
- 4:00Will you lead me to this band of Raiders?
- 4:03David asked. The young man replied.
- 4:06If you take an oath in God's name that you will not kill me
- 4:10or give me back to my master, then I will guide you to them.
- 4:15So he led David to them, and they found the Amalekites spread
- 4:19out across the fields, eating and drinking and dancing with
- 4:23joy. Because of the vast amount of
- 4:24plunder they had taken from the Philistines and the land of
- 4:27Judah, David and his men rushed in among them and slaughtered
- 4:32them throughout that night and the entire next day until
- 4:36evening. None of the Amalekites escaped
- 4:39except 400 young men who fled on camels.
- 4:42David got back everything the Amalekites had taken and he
- 4:47rescued his two wives. Nothing was missing, small or
- 4:51great son or daughter, nor anything else that had been
- 4:54taken. David brought everything back.
- 4:58He also recovered all the flocks and herds, and his men drove
- 5:02them ahead of the other livestock.
- 5:05This plunder belongs to David, they said.
- 5:09Then David returned to the Brook Besor and met up with the 200
- 5:13men who have been left behind because they were too exhausted
- 5:15to go with him. They went out to meet David and
- 5:18his men, and David greeted them joyfully.
- 5:22But some evil troublemakers among David's men said they
- 5:26didn't go with us, so they can't have any of the plunder we
- 5:29recovered. Give them their wives and
- 5:31children and tell them to be gone.
- 5:33But David said no. My brothers, don't be selfish
- 5:37with what the Lord has given us. He has kept us safe and helped
- 5:41us defeat the band of Raiders that attacked us Who will listen
- 5:45when you talk like this. We share and share alike those
- 5:50who go to battle and those who guard the equipment.
- 5:54From then on, David made this a decree and regulation for Israel
- 5:59and it is still followed today. When he arrived at Ziklag, David
- 6:04sent part of the plunder to the elders of Judah, who were his
- 6:08friends. Here is a present for you, taken
- 6:11from the Lord's enemies, he said.
- 6:14The gifts were sent to the people of the following towns.
- 6:17David had visited Bethel, Ramoth, Negev, Jatta, Arawa,
- 6:22Sidmouth, Esta, Moa, Rattle, and the towns of the Jeremy Elites,
- 6:28the towns of the Kenites. Horma Bore, Ashan, Athach,
- 6:33Hebron, and all the other places David and his men had visited
- 6:47Jesus. You are our saviour.
- 6:50You are a God of love. That is your very identity and
- 6:57Lord, you know that so often we find it hard to love beyond
- 7:00ourselves or our immediate circle.
- 7:03I pray today that you enlarge our hearts.
- 7:07That your love would fill our hearts to overflowing.
- 7:11That our hearts could only but grow so that your love can
- 7:16continue to find place in them, and so that we can love those
- 7:21around us not with our finite human love, but with your
- 7:25endless gift of love. Hope that be the defining way
- 7:32that people know us. Help that be our posture as we
- 7:36approach others today. With your love.
- 7:41With your heart of love that we wouldn't be quick to judge.
- 7:45That we wouldn't be quick to anger put That we would love and
- 7:51forgive and draw close and Lord. Why we will never be able to
- 7:57live up to your example of love. Your perfect example of love.
- 8:02Gee, we could be closer. So please transform us to be
- 8:06more like you. We pray all of this in the
- 8:09loving name of Jesus. Ah man.
