- 0:00For most people, the concept of sincerity is connected with how
- 0:05they relate to other people in an open, natural and honest way
- 0:10without duplicity or hypocrisy. The idea that sincerity can
- 0:15relate to oneself and one's inner life is something that
- 0:19spiritual aspirants grapple with.
- 0:22Sincerity is an essential quality for the spiritual seeker
- 0:26as it implies that the thoughts, emotions, vital responses and
- 0:31physical reactions align with the deepest aspiration.
- 0:37Without sincerity, the aspiration is basically
- 0:40thwarted, diverted or obstructed in the external being.
- 0:46There are known instances where someone takes on the aspect of a
- 0:49teacher or guru and uses the knowledge and vital energy he
- 0:54has in order to manipulate and take advantage of the followers,
- 0:58gaining fame, prestige, money, sexual favours and allegiance
- 1:04while inwardly enjoying these benefits and putting on a show
- 1:08externally for the sake of gaining support and adherence.
- 1:13This type of hypocrisy has a corrosive effect on the
- 1:16individuals who are caught in the trap, some of whom never
- 1:20truly recover their balance in this lifetime.
- 1:24If the individual treats this simply as a business for
- 1:27external gain, it is insincerity and hypocrisy on the external
- 1:32level. But the individual is not
- 1:35misleading himself about his purpose or his methods.
- 1:39This external form of deception, however, is not the deepest
- 1:44measure of insincerity. The spiritual aspirant has to
- 1:48examine his own inner life to identify the lack of sincerity
- 1:52where one prays for certain types of spiritual growth and
- 1:55progress, while at the same time one makes excuses for thoughts,
- 2:00words and deeds that directly contradict that aspiration.
- 2:05It is one thing to actually recognize the weaknesses and
- 2:09failures clearly and take steps to align them with the
- 2:12aspiration. It is another to pretend to
- 2:15oneself that there is a true will of aspiration while
- 2:19entertaining obstructive actions, feelings, thoughts or
- 2:24motivations. This is corrosive to the seeker
- 2:27himself and can set back the spiritual progress if he does
- 2:32not finally recognize and address this issue.
- 2:37Sri Aurobindo observes Quote sincere is simply an adjective
- 2:42meaning that the will must be a true will.
- 2:45If you simply think I aspire and do things inconsistent with the
- 2:51aspiration, or follow your desires, or open yourself to
- 2:55contrary influences, then it is not a sincere will.
