- 0:16distinctions, possibilities, new ways of thinking, and just bring
- 0:20some joy into the world. So welcome to the coop, and
- 0:23let's start your day off in a fantastic way.
- 0:27Hey everybody, good morning from the chicken coop.
- 0:30So we're talking about how we need to ask questions.
- 0:34If we're a leader, we need to ask questions.
- 0:36We need to ask ourselves questions as we talk about all
- 0:38the time. But if we're in a leadership
- 0:40position, we really need to ask our people that we are leading
- 0:45questions. So this week I was in the middle
- 0:48of a call with a client and he runs a very, very big team and
- 0:52they're doing tons and tons and tons of outreach work.
- 0:55It requires a lot of connection with people that they want to
- 1:00have as clients. They have to really show them
- 1:02that they are the people that they want to work with.
- 1:05I mean, it's a, there's a ton of trust that's built into it.
- 1:07I mean, I think most businesses have that factor where, you
- 1:10know, if you don't have the trust coming from both sides,
- 1:15where they trust you and you trust them, it's going to be
- 1:17hard to influence them. But we, we, we tend to take it
- 1:20for granted. That's the strange part.
- 1:22We take it for granted and we think, oh, they'll just trust
- 1:24me. They'll trust what my accolades
- 1:26are, what I've already done, things like that.
- 1:27And it's not always true. So in the process of him talking
- 1:31about how, you know, that they have to do all this.
- 1:34And I, I was making the point that we've got 90 roughly, you
- 1:37know, 90 days left in the year, you know, October, November and
- 1:42December. But December we all know is like
- 1:44a crapshoot. Those last two weeks are going
- 1:46to be useless coming into the new year.
- 1:49And then everybody comes back hell, like, you know, guns a
- 1:51blazing and ready to go. So I said to him, well, what is
- 1:56it that needs to happen in order for you to have success in the
- 1:59last 90 days of the year? And he said me personally or the
- 2:03team and I said both. So he answered the question and
- 2:06it was all data-driven stuff about this is the stuff that
- 2:10needs to happen, meaning hard results, which is fine, that's
- 2:14totally fine, gives me all that. And I said, OK, what about the
- 2:19softer skills? He said, explain.
- 2:21I said, well, what about making sure that the team feels a
- 2:25certain way, that they feel good about it and it's not just the
- 2:28grind because we're in the middle of the grind.
- 2:31And he paused and he said, that's a really good question.
- 2:33And I said, well, that's what you pay me for.
- 2:36We started laughing and he goes, no, I just never think of that.
- 2:39And I was like, most people don't.
- 2:41So he said, how would you approach it?
- 2:42I said, I think it's really important to go and ask each one
- 2:46of them individually, not as a group.
- 2:49And this is key guys, not as a group individually.
- 2:52Sit them down and say, OK, you know what the metrics are that
- 2:56we need to meet by the end of the year and have them run it by
- 2:59you. Just have them run those
- 3:00tactics, the metrics, as well as the strategies and tactics
- 3:03they're going to use to get there.
- 3:05And he said, Yep, that standard operating procedure.
- 3:09I said, great, Then that next higher level is to say, okay, so
- 3:14tell me, what do you need in order to make this happen?
- 3:18Ask it very generally at first, what do you need?
- 3:21And they're probably going to give you a lot of tactile stuff
- 3:24that they need. Like I'm going to need to be,
- 3:26you know, flying here. I'm going to need to be going
- 3:28and doing this. I'm going to need the support of
- 3:30the admin or creative or whatever they need.
- 3:34And he's like, OK. And I said, but then you ask it
- 3:36a different way. You say, OK, now let's put a pin
- 3:38in that for a second. What do you personally need?
- 3:41Like what, what is it that's it in you that you're, you know,
- 3:46you're not necessarily sharing with me because, you know, it
- 3:49might not be something that I want to hear.
- 3:51But is it that you need to have Saturdays to make it to that
- 3:54game that you know, you want to see your son play?
- 3:57Is it that, you know, you need to be able to not travel for
- 4:02this particular week because this is a time when you know,
- 4:05your daughter's going to be in a play and you want to be there.
- 4:08And if you miss it, it's going to bother the hell out of you
- 4:10and it's going to eat away at you.
- 4:12And he's like, well, if I ask those questions and everybody
- 4:15takes advantage of that and we're not meeting the metrics.
- 4:17And I said, ho, ho, hold on. You're not guaranteeing
- 4:20anything. You're just trying to find out.
- 4:23And the reason why this is so important is 1.
- 4:26You need to know what people are thinking because this is where
- 4:29they start to get in their head and they go, all right, you
- 4:31know, I just can't do this anymore.
- 4:32I need to be home more. I need this more.
- 4:34And they start making plans and don't tell you.
- 4:36And as much as you think that they trust you and that they
- 4:40will tell you things, they won't.
- 4:42So it's really important to recognize this.
- 4:45So we got into a very deep conversation about trust and how
- 4:49to, like, understand where they're coming from and
- 4:52understand yourself. Like, if you put yourself back
- 4:5530 years, would you have done that?
- 4:57And he's like, probably not. And I said, OK, so that's why
- 4:59it's so important. And by the end of the
- 5:02conversation, he got it. But the reality is anybody who's
- 5:05in a leadership position has to be willing to ask about those
- 5:09softer, important emotional skills that we as human beings
- 5:14actually operate in. That is our operating system.
- 5:18So you can try all you want to make people grind it out, but
- 5:21that operating system is still going to be doing what it does.
- 5:24And if you don't tap into that and understand it, your team
- 5:27will suffer. So it's important to know those
- 5:29emotional questions as much as you know those tactile
- 5:32questions, because without those emotional questions being taken
- 5:36care of and answered and addressed, those tactile
- 5:40questions, all of those things that you want to get done are
- 5:43going to be running on the wrong operating system.
- 5:46So I hope you guys have a blessed day and I hope this
- 5:49helped and I will see you tomorrow.
- 5:50Bye.
